sense of familiarity, an old friend who delivers information that continues to be an invaluable resource to breeders everywhere. This 2022 edition of the WBFSHBN Stallion Directory, is the 18th of a perpetual series – and the fourth time it has been published exclusively online, and free of charge! This is the only ‘global’ stallion database that is ‘live’ for 365 days a year, with entries offering self management by stallion owners and representatives who can independently add/update information, making it even more accurate and efficient. Over the years we have always strived to perfect the tools we place in your hands, although capturing the most up-to-date information in this ever-changing world can often present challenges. However, our task is far from over, and we are committed to delivering this veritable ‘Who’s who’ of the breeding industry. Through our Directory the answers to many questions will be answered, unreservedly. It’s as simple as that: a key... a resource. Year after year we have been recording and cross-referencing information from the stallion databases developed by member studbooks of the WBFSH. Step by step! Four thousand stallions recorded on our database during the first year, increasing to nearly 10,000 curated entries in 2022. As the volume of studbooks and breeders is expanding every year, they are the best witnesses to our progression and professionalism. Consequently, over the years, as we focus on purging deceased and gelded stallions from our database (although we do appreciate that their reputations are being kept alive thanks Stallion Directory 2022

to modern reproductive techniques long after they’ve left this world), we are constantly adding newly licensed/approved stallions as soon as information becomes available. In terms of our rankings, each year they are updated by a process of due diligence and, as always, we are striving for quality not quantity. Continuous improvement is our goal to better inform you, the breeders, and provide a window into the world of sport horse breeding. We also answer basic questions – what are the dominant bloodlines. Or, more anecdotally, what is the average age of active stallions, the dominant colour? This is why, for the 13th year in a row, the WBFSH is supporting our initiative. This renowned Federation’s logo on our front cover is our motivation, our encouragement. Our thanks go to all the private stallion owners who are primarily concerned with the Directory entries, and to those studbooks who every year are providing reliable information. We are also extremely grateful to our faithful and regular advertisers (see index at the end of the book). These valuable partnerships have taught us the meaning of mutual respect and moral support, some over many years. We extend our thanks to them for their involvement and continued support. This year, the stallions and contacts appear online as a unique interactive database, where owners can self manage their stallions, adding and updating information. A major step forward for breeding in a world where technology is an essential tool. TORY

PART I: THE STALLION LIST • Life number: While some studbooks have embraced the UELN concept, there are others who have yet to adopt this universal numbering system for birth registrations. A pity, since registration numbers are essential for accurately tracking horses whose names may change several times during their sporting careers. • Year of birth and pedigree: Virtually 100% • Size and colour: Included in the database where provided by studbooks. • Breeder, studbook of origin: It’s frustrating that some studbooks and independent breeders often fail to mention this information. So, dear breeders, please take pride in your role and honour the accomplishments of others by sharing this information with us and the rest of the world. Breeders are the most important component in this project, alongside the stallions themselves. • Approval studbooks: A unique aspect of our Directory, as an increasing number of ‘star’ stallions are regularly approved by more than one studbook, even if they are not recognized by their own birth studbook. Ironic!

We continue to strive for alphabetical integrity by using primary names to better facilitate the search process and, hopefully, avoid any foreign language confusion. The breeder who owns one stallion is as important as one who owns 20 or more. By cross-referencing every stallion entry (where the owner is known), our Directory database has become a valuable ‘interactive’ source. This is why it is unique, and why the searchable online database provides the ability to sort stallions by specified criteria. Power at your fingertips, although when contact information is minimal or unrecorded so a vital link is lost.

ompared to last year’s Sires of Sires ranking there are no changes in the top eight, and the volume of approved/licensed sons seems to have hit a road block. Maybe this can be attributed to the Covid era years – 2020 and 2021 – when stallion shows everywhere were being organized behind closed doors, and border crossings and travel restrictions were seriously limiting transporta- Diamant de Semilly tion options. Or perhaps we are simply seeing a plateau of no decipherable origins? Either way, the Selle Français Diamant de Semilly (Le Tot de Semilly Venise des Cresles x Elf III) has consolidated his lead, once again, with a few more sons over last year. Certainly, his sport partnership with Eric Levallois generated incredible impact in showjumping breeding. He has, for example, founded his own stallion lines outside France, in Germany and Belgium, through stallions such as Diarado or Emerald van’t Ruytershof, respectively. Also Selle Français, Quidam de Revel (Jalisco B - Dirka x Nankin) had a good career under the saddles of, first, Hervé Godignon (fourth individually at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games), and later with Thomas Velin, and remains in second with 110 sons. Coincidentally, one son Quel Homme de Hus is currently in the top 20 of the Longines jumping ranking with Belgian Jérôme Guéry, while another son, Verdi, is now working on his career as sire following his career in top sport with Maikel van der Vleuten. Sandro Hit (Sandro Song - Loretta x Ramino) continues in third with the same num-

ber as last year, with his best known sons being Sir Donnerhall I/II and Samba Hit I/II. The embryo transfer/ICSI era is working well for Cornet Obolensky (Clinton - Rabanna van Costersveld x Heartbreaker) who enjoyed a top career in sport under the saddle of Marco Kutscher. Proven sons such as Comme Il Faut, as well as up-and-comer Crack will continue his legacy. Still inside the top 10, four stallions are sitting with the same number of sons as last year: Kannan, Baloubet du Rouet, Contender and Darco, while Casall (Caretino - Kira XVII x Lavall I) lost three sons, The next stallion with a small gain is C-Indoctro (Capitol I - Vanessa VII x Caletto II) adding one son to his tally and now ranked 13th. Two more sons for both Balou du Rouet (Baloubet du Rouet - Georgia x Continue) and For Pleasure (Furioso II – Gigantin x Grannus) in 16thex. More than 50% of the 49 listed sires competed at the highest level, with the Holsteiner Verband heading the Sires of Sires leaderboard with 15 stallions. Names such as Cassini I, Carthago, Caretino, Clinton, and Canturo have certainly been much lauded sporting promoters for the studbook. KWPN and Selle Français both have seven stallions, while BWP, Oldenburg and Hanoverian have five, Rheinland with two, and DSP, Mecklenburg and Trakehner with one apiece. Adriana van Tilburg 13

smart young horse is not always an easy difficult horse during its formative years and H&M Indiana – birth name Indiana C&C – was no exception. However, contributing to Sweden’s team gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021 proved that this mare grew into herself in an extraordinary way. According to one of her co-breeders, Chloe Ruys, her birth was already an interesting event as she arrived without introduction and was already standing boldly beside her dam when Chloe arrived at her stable; obviously a very special foal from day one. Being cute and being strong-willed often go hand-in-hand, and although she was sweet natured and affectionate, her stubborn streak presented itself from a very early age, including when it first came to wearing a head collar. Training under saddle could also be challenging, especially when she regularly ignored directional aids and decided to go her own way. In the early days, no one imagined she would become an Olympian. At the age of six, with zero rideability, she was sold to Stephex Stables, who then sold her on. In an interview with World of Showjumping, Malin explains; “We were in Arezzo. She [Indiana] was jumping there as a seven-year-old when my owner,Charlotte Söderström – who also owns H&M All In – noticed on the start list that the two horses are closely related. Charlotte also does some breeding, so the fact that Indiaia is a mare was interesting for her. We tried Indiana and she bought her there and then.” At that time, Indiana was being ridden by Stephex Stable’s Petronella Andersson, who admitted that she was ‘very green’ for her age. “She always had a lot of character, but I could feel that she had a lot of potential. Her jump was spectacular [...] so it’s a pleasure to see her doing so well now.” According to Malin, building a working relationship with Indiana took some time; “Indiana has been extremely difficult. She is a big horse and her rideability is really low. I met her breeders who told me that as a five-year-old she could barely canter. She became easier to ride when we started to jump bigger fences, because then at least the jumps impressed her and she started to listen more. She has been a challenge, but I like challenges and it’s nice to have something to work for.” During the 2019 Longines Global Champions Tour season, which saw Malin and Indiana competing for the Berlin Eagles team, they had jumped eight out of nine clear rounds – the epitome of consistency. SP Dalera BB has carried Jessica von Bredow-Werndl to top FEI placings since they first hit a CDI3* arena at Lamprechtshausen, Austria, in 2016: First in the Intermedaire I, second in the Prix St. Georges. Since then, the pair have danced under the spotlight at the world’s highest-level competitions, culminating in a trifecta at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, winning the Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Special, then adding the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music. A dream result perfectly emulated two months later at the European Championships in Hagen. According to Dalera’s breeder, “Basically it was all luck,” as Druckenmüller has no background with horses, only finding her way to them through a riding school. Her second mare, Mon Clair de La Lune – who is first and foremost her own riding horse – will later become a broodmare, following her philosophy to buy mares to ride herself, and only later for breeding. Silke Druckenmüller was, in fact, closely connected to the late breeder of Mon Clair de La Lune through many years of friendship, so she chose a Trakehner mare once again for her next horse: Dark Magic by Handryk x Hohenstein, Dalera’s dam, born in 2002. The black-bay mare was three years old when she moved from Saxony to Rhineland-Palatinate. “I found Dark Magic on the internet and purchased her from the breeder as a riding horse. Dark Magic’s pedigree appealed to us, and because Handryk’s sire, Van Deyk, had some very good offspring here in the area at the time. Her motherline is very solid and comes from East Germany. This line is known for producing jumping horses, but it also gives hardness and willingness to perform," Druckenmüller explains. “Dark Magic started under saddle at the age of three, and covered as a four-year-old. The plan was for her to have one foal, then return to sport, and Dalera was her first, born in 2007. I discovered her sire Easy Game (Gribaldi) at the licensing and he convinced me because of his quality of movement and his performance pedigree, plus Gribaldi works very well for producing dressage horses. Basically it was a gut decision.” Dalera was Druckenmüller’s third own-bred foal, but was not the most beautiful specimen as Trakehner breeders turned up their noses during the Alzey foal show; “Dalera was not exactly a classic type of a Trakehner, and that is more noticeable as a foal than in a riding horse. But to think she would come so far one day, no one could have guessed. You can only dream of it.” Dalera proved her rideability when she was started under saddle at the age of four: “She was always great to ride and gave you a great feeling. When I sold her as a four- or five-year- old I thought ‘she is very good’, so decided to cover Dark Magic gain, this time from Millennium. This became a mare who is still in sport and I breed with her through embryo transfer. From this combination I also bred a seven-yeat-old gelding. Afterwards I could not get Dark Magic in foal anymore, but I still breed with her thanks to embryo transfer. Last year she gave two full sisters to Dalera, plus I bred a full brother, who is now also with Dalera’s owner. This whole journey with Dalera is still overwhelming and I am grateful for all the beautiful moments. he Holsteiner bred London 52 (Landos - Vernante x Quinar, Stamm 3200) was born in 2009 and sold as a foal. His breeder, Ocke Riewerts recalls: “London 52 was a very blood-typed, noble foal. I was a bit surprised because I thought the foal wouldn’t be this elegant. Vernante was also a very beautiful mare with good movement and she jumped well. She was 168cms so she had a good size, plus she had a very good character. I have to say that all my horses have a good character.” Breeding has its daily struggles, as Ocke Riewerts recalls: “After Vernante had two foals she had a very bad accident and could no longer carry. I have only one broodmare left from this line, Vernante’s half-sister Imme, by Livello. I try to keep the fillies to continue the line and I sell the colts.” London 52 was initially raised as a stallion prospect in Schleswig-Holstein, then trained and shown in competition, where he was discovered by Peter Thomsen. Since 2016, London has been ridden by Britain’s Laura Collett, who has successfully represented her country at various championships. Together, they have collected numerous victories and placings in international eventing: in 2019 and 2020 alone finishing four-star events in Boekelo (NED), Chatsworth (GBR), and Little Downham (GBR) and the five-star competition in Pau, France, as the winner. Ocke Riewerts recalls his start in breeding: “My father started breeding with this line with the mare Legende (Sacramento Song xx - Zugspitze x Anklang, bred by Alfred von der Geest). She was in foal and had a foal at foot.” She is born in 1974 and was the perfect example of modernizing the Holsteiner breed. Her father was a Thoroughbred and Anklang was a half-blood by Anblick xx. Following the death of Ocke Riewerts’ father, his Holsteiner horses moved to his wife Marle’s family farm, which the couple managed as a hobby from then on, as Riewerts' primary employment is in the civil service. His sons Johannes and Julus help out on the farm and are interested in their parents’ breeding. London's dam Vernante was a very special horse for Ocke Riewerts: his first home-bred state premium mare, for whom he chose the stallion Landos. “I was a fan of Landos. He was stationed on Föhr and at that time was still covering naturally. He had the right attitude towards the sport and was an ideal match for my blooded mares.” However, London 52 wasn’t bred with eventing in mind. According to Riewerts; “In the beginning I didn’t think about breeding an eventing horse. When you are breeding with Holsteiner horses you are breeding in the first place a jumper. London 52 found his way to become a top eventing horse and, yes, it makes me very happy that it worked out this way. In hindsight I could think more about breeding horses for the eventing sport.” For the breeder, everything that’s happened has been quite remarkable. “It is incredible what has happened. I only have three broodmares and all the attention that came with it was quite overwhelming. Rural breeding was a successful foundation for the Holsteiner horse, where farmers only had a few mares and built up their lines. I want to breed with the mares that convince me and bring me joy. My goal is to try to continue to breed top horses. I will not change my system and I will still try to use the stallions I believe in.” ■ Adriana van Tilburg and Jean Llewellyn

e are all only too aware that a great many events have been cancelled over the past couple of years, and which horses actually got to compete was something of a lottery. Any stats coming out of the pandemic years need to be treated with even more than the usual caution. Still both the showjumping and the dressage stats provide an interesting insight into sport horse breeding, while the eventing stats prove yet again that eventing really isn’t a stallion thing...

Showjumping Leading the showjumping rankings is Antidote de Mars, who reminds us what a loss Diamant de Sémilly's recent death was. Antidote is by Diamant out of a mare line replete with genetic diversity and proven performance. The dam sire is Jarnac, a 1m60 competitor with Julio Arias and Timothee Anciaume, who is by the Anglo Arab, Ryan d’Anzex, another 1m60 competitor. Antidote is out of the 1m40 jumper, Tilda de Mars, who is the daughter of one of the superstar broodmares in Joris de Brabander's all-star band – Querly Chin (Chin Chin x Pachet II) – the dam of four 1m60 competitors. Thus far, Antidote de Mars has won €405,985 in prizemoney. The second highest ranked stallion is Con Quidam RB ridden at 1m70 level by Dutchman, Sanne Thijssen. Their best result this year was a 1m55 win at Vejer de la Frontera, in February, while in December 2021, they took another 1m55 class, this time in Geneva. This stallion is another of the 'bastards', a heady mix of Selle Français and Holsteiner blood. where he was bred over a number of Gotthard mares. His dam S-Capitola B is by the Carthago son, Cardino, out of a Capitol x Landjunker II mare. Quidam really dominates this top ten as he’s the sire of the third-ranked Quel Homme de Hus – a stallion is out of a mare by the Cassini I son, Candillo, and although born in Germany he is exactly half-half, Selle Français x Holsteiner. Quel Homme de Hus competes 1m70 with Belgium's Jérôme Guery. Fourth, another 1m70 competitor, this time with Christian Kukuk – Mumbai, who is by Diamant de Sémilly out of a mare by Nabab de Rêve by... Quidam de Revel. Fifth Balou du Reventon is by the superstar and super sire, Cornet Obolensky (Clinton x Heartbreaker). He was bred by Paul Schockemöhle from a mare line that contains most of the Lewitz foundation lines: Continue x Domino x Gepard. This one jumps 1m70 with American, Brian Moggre. Sixth, Oak's Grove Enkidu (who started life as Bohysra d'Auzay LA, I do find studs changing names like this, rather distasteful). He is a 1m70 competitor with German Daniel Deusser. Then we have Rouge de Ravel by Ultimo van ter Moude (Capitol) out of a Major de la Cour x Jalisco B mare. Rouge de Ravel is out of Oceane du Ruisseau (Quouglof Rouge) out of a mare by Surcouf de Revel (Jalisco B). According to his website, Rouge de Ravel has been the most consistent performer in world showjumping in recent years and is the only horse to have appeared in the top 30 of the WBFSH showjumping rankings in each of the last three years. Since teaming up with Guy Williams in 2017, Rouge has completed 269 international showjumping classes finishing in the top 12 in 118 or 44% of those classes, including 37 victories. Rouge’s career earnings currently stand at just over €600,000, and he is approved as an ‘elite’ stallion by the Anglo European Studbook. Ninth to another international frontliner, Hello Vincent, a 1m70 jumper with Scott Brash. He is by Consul de la Vie Z (another product of that remarkable Clinton x Heartbreaker cross) out of a mare by Ferger Mail (Laudanum xx). Rounding out our top 10 we have Stargold, by Sprehe’s resident number one sire, Stakkato Gold (Stakkato x Werther) out of a Lordanos x Contender mare. Stargold is a 1m60 jumper with Marcus Ehning. Rouge Ravel and Quelle Homme de Hus are the only two who appeared in last year’s top 10, again possibly due to the massive disruption to the normal competition schedule.

ings is Total US, whom Edward Gal rode at the 2020 Tokyo Games for a score of 78.649 and individual sixth place. Total US was bred by Paul Schockemöhle at Lewitz, after Schockemöhle and Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff shocked the Dutch dressage world by purchasing Totilas who had been the jewel in the Dutch dressage team’s crown. Schockemöhle’s choice of broodmare was very much the product of his own breeding program and his well-known flair for wheeling and dealing. Total US’s damsire Sir Donnerhall’s dam, Contenance D is out of the Holsteiner mare, Contenance II, whose sire, Feldherr combines two of the famous old-style Holsteiners, Farnese and Moltke I. Her dam, Contenance is by the Thoroughbred, Grundyman xx, while her dam, Vorr is by another Holsteiner, Ratibor (conventional enough: Raimond, Consul, Ladykiller, Fahnrich). It is the next line that starts to get exotic, with lots of å’s and ø’s, indicating that we have moved even further north to Denmark, and one of the original Danish breeds, the Fredriksborg, a breed of chestnut carriage horses. Contenance D received her state premium award at Oldenburg’s most prestigious mare show, Rastede, before she arrived at PSI by a somewhat circuitous route. According to Ulf Möller, then manager of the PSI dressage barn and the rider who partnered Sir Donnerhall throughout his career, it was a deal within a deal. 39

Glock’s Total US with Edward Gal (NED)

A partnership between a businessman and Paul Schockemöhle’s jumping-barn manager, was coming to the end: “They did some horse dealing together and then they couldn’t agree about how to finish the deal, so in the end they agreed that Mr. Schockemöhle would get an unborn foal out of one of his mares. So they finished the deal and this was Sir Donnerhall.” Total US’s dam Sondra is by Don Schufro (one of Schockemöhle’s first dressage stallion stars before he sold him to Blue Hors) but the damsire is one of the jumping stalwarts of the PS operation, Continue. To date, the black stallion has been the most successful Totilas product in the dressage arena, but has perhaps been less successful as a breeding stallion. I guess Dutchman Joop van Uytert is one of very few stallion owners in the world who finds a stallion getting only 130 mares underwhelming. Back in 2018, when Total US was sold to Glock, van Uytert made the point that Total US was not as popular with the breeders as he had hoped. “Last year he bred 130 mares. It’s a lot but not extreme. If he would cover 400 mares worldwide, the cards would have been different,” van Uytert told Horses.nl. Still 130 is a fair book and you might have thought that at least one colt would have made it to the 2020 KWPN licensing. But while his stable-mate, Glock's Toto Jr (out of a Desperados x Rotspon Stallion Directory 2022

mare) had 11 candidates (including Majestic Taonga, who has recently been acquired for Isabell Werth) at the KWPN licensing, there was not one by Total US. DSP Quantaz, ranked second, is an exciting prospect with Isabell Werth. Already they have collected 15 wins at Grand Prix level. In 2020, the pair won the Otto Lörke prize for successful Grand Prix horses between the age of eight and 10 – which put him into fairly elite company, as previous winners include Satchmo, Bonaparte, Elvis VA, Chacomo, Farbenfroh, Rusty, Grunox, Gigolo, Goldstern, Rembrandt, Bella Rose and Showtime FRH. Quantaz is by Quaterback out of a Hohenstein mare, and he carries the blood of one the stars of the broodmare band at Neustadt Dosse – his granddam, Poesie is the dam of the six Poetins, and the five Samba Hits. The DSP began in 2003 as a cooperation between the East German horse breeding associations in Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia so creating a base of around 6,500 mares. At first the new grouping produced a series of very successful dressage horses, starting with the 2006 Bundeschampion, the recently deceased, Quaterback (Quaterman x Brandenburger) who became an established sire of Grand Prix competitors. Others who were successful included a six-year-old World Champion young dressage horse, Poetin I (Sandro Hit x Brentano II) and the full-brothers, Samba Hit I and II. Soon the dressage stars of DSP were joined by show jumpers like Aragon Z by Askari under Christian Ahlmann, and Kira Bel by Kolibri x Darß xx with Rene Tebbel . Since 2014, the DSP studbook has been expanded to include the South German Horse Breeding Associations. This union of the seven associations has created a base of 9,000 registered mares and around 500 stallions, making the German Sport Horse one of the largest riding horse populations in Germany, and they are now on the frontline thanks to DSP Alice 43

Other top horses include DSP Cashmoaker, DSP Anpowikapi, DSP Cuba Libre, DSP Cedric, Chilly Jam DSP, DSP Fierro, DSP Boss Hoss or the world championship title holders of young horses like Asha P, Fortino, Secret, DSP Belantis and DSP Don de la Mar. German dressage star, Dorothy Schneider is obviously a fan, competing three: DSP Sammy Davis JR, DSP Quantaz and DSP Pathètique. Ranked third we find Everdale, very much a product of Van Olst Horses, since he combines two of their stallion stars, Lord Leatherdale (Lord Loxley x Ferragamo) and Negro (Ferro x Variant). Everdale was a star at the Tokyo Games with Charlotte Fry, where the duo finished in individual 13th. Everdale was at the centre of the WFFS outbreak of 2018, when he and two of his sons proved positive, so I suppose he did not cover huge books of mares – although he did have one representative in the most recent KWPN stallion show. Sanceo is fourth. He is by San Remo who is extremely fashionably bred, by Sandro Hit out of a Donnerhall mare. But Sanceo’s own mare line is anything but fashionable. His dam, Rivero is by Ramiro’s Son II out of a Star Regent xx mare. Sanceo was another superstar at the Tokyo Games, fifth in the Grand Prix on a score of 84.30 with Sabine Schut-Kerry, who started him as a three-year-old. Sanceo has in the past been used for breeding exclusively by his owners, Alice Womble-Heitmann and Dr Mike Heitmann, but is now being marketed commercially in the United States. Fifth to another international star, Dante Weltino, 14th in Tokyo with Therese Nilshagen. He is a stunningly beautiful creature and you can forgive him his less than correct front leg, which I am assured he is not passing on. Dante Weltino is by Danone I (De Niro x Weltmeyer) and out of a Welt Hit II x Noble Roi xx mare. Dante Weltino has been quite well used by the mare owners, and according to the Stallion Directory 2022

2022 Hanoverian Stallion Book has already produced 237 competitors with winnings of €66,001 x- the stallion himself has won €62,633. His most successful competitor has been Hanami (His Highness) a Grand Prix competitor with Austria’s Sandra Nuxoll, with winnings of €10,130. He has a 2021 FN young horse breeding value of 136, a highest level achieved value of 139, and has produced nine licensed sons. Sixth, Glock’s Dream Boy NOP, whose breeding is very much state-of-the-art in the Netherlands, by Vivaldi out of a Ferro mare. The stallion has been a star with Hans Peter Minderhoud, recently placing third at Doha with a score of 81.93, and before that a fifth in Stockholm on 76.542, last November. Glock’s Dream Boy is already the sire of one Grand Prix competitor, Holiday (Michelangelo) out of his first (2012) crop, and two small tour competitors. Seventh to a real star in the competition arena and the breeding barn, Blue Hors Zack who is by Rousseau out of a Jazz mare. The stallion was fourth in the 2019 World Cup final and 10th at the 2018 Tryon WEG with Daniel Bachmann Andersen, then after Daniel left Blue Hors, the ride went to Nanna Skodborg Merrald who rode him to 11th in Tokyo. As a breeding stallion, Zack has been equally successful. So far he has produced 38 (!) small tour competitors, and 10 Grand Prix horses: BH Zepter (Wolkentanz II), BH Zick Flower (Romanov), Glock’s Zonic (Romanov), Zap Zap (Leonardo II), Zidane (Ladoga), Zig Zag (Don Schufro), BH Zatcho (Donnerhall), Famora (Krack C), Heide Spirit (Sir Donnerhall) and Straight Horse Zackonick (Romanov). Easy Game (Gribaldi x Swadroneur) is an interesting stallion. So far he has only produced two Grand Prix horses, but what horses: Aachen winner, Hèrmes, who is number eight on this year’s ranking, and current World Number One dressage horse, the mare, Dalera 45

(Handryk). Hèrmes is out of a Flemmingh x Jazz mare, and he too stands at the van Uytert stable. He has already produced 81 progeny that have made it onto the HorseTelex database, but none have competed FEI yet. Rounding out the top 10 we have another Dutchman, Hexagon’s Double Dutch, by Johnson TN, out of a Rubiquil mare who is in turn, out of a mare by Kyra Kyrklund's superstar, Matador. The 14-year-old stallion has been a consistent performer at Grand Prix with Thamar Zweistra. Double Dutch's dam, Ushimanda, is a full-sister to Hexagon's Roumanda (Rubiquil x Matador x Dultan x Doruto) who competed Grand Prix. Both the granddam and the greatgranddam competed Grand Prix, and this Manda bloodline has for many years been one of the best bloodlines in the Netherlands according to the KWPN index. None of his 22 progeny on the Horsetelex base have made it to FEI level.

Eventing Eventing stallions, is the table that drives mild-mannered World Breeding News managing editor, Jean Llewellyn into a frenzy each year, since the FEI seemingly cannot find a way to sort the stallions from the geldings on its database. However, although I now believe we can be sure that the stallions on the list have the necessary equipment, I am not sure if they offer Stallion Directory 2022

much to the breeder... I also suspect that this list is the worst affected by the pandemic since threeday events have been few-and-far between. The most successful eventing competitor who also happens to be a stallion is the French horse, Vitorio du Montet who is ranked 58th in the world. He is by Lando (Lancier x Raimondo), an Olympic showjumping star with Albert Voorn, out of a mare by 1m40 showjumper, Arpege Pierreville*HN. Vitorio was fifth at five-star Pau in October2021 with Maxime Livio. There are two horses in the top 10 that mare owners might consider seriously. Last year’s number one, Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF (Abendtanz x Campetor AA), and winner of the World Breeding Championship for Young horses as a seven-year-old in Le Lion d’Angers 2021, who is an attractive package. The stallion is from the Sweetwater Stud in Bulgaria, and by the Trakehner stallion Abendtanz, out of an Anglo Arab mare by Campetot. Abendtanz’s pedigree is studded with the names of the famous Trakehner stallions – Sixtus, Kostolany, Enrico Caruso and Kassiber. Sweetwaters Ziethen TSF was purchased as a foal at foot with his dam, and raised at Sweetwater Stud where the man in charge, George Muehlethaler has a program to specifically breed eventers. This year he ranks third. The other stallion is the 10th-ranked Tenareze. He too was a star at the Worlds, winning both the six- and seven-year-old titles with French rider, Thomas Carlile. Since he was sold to Britain’s Harry Meade, his career has been a bit up and down, but the pair did manage a second at Millstreet four-star in June 2021. Genetically he is a nice mix. He is by Jaguar Mail (by Hand in Glove xx out of a Laudanum mare x Almé x Gotthard mare, that adds up to seveneithths Thoroughbred) out of an Anglo mare, Utopie du Maury AA (Quatar de Plape AA x Jalienny AA). SIRE RANKING BASED ON SIX BEST PERFORMING OFFSPRING

he annual WBFSH/FEI horse rankings are based on points earned in FEI competitions from October 1 to September 30 each year. From these rankings we have created a list of the top sires per discipline by calculating the points earned by their top six performance offspring in FEI competitions. As some stallions have many more offspring than others, limiting them to their best six representatives creates a level foundation for comparison. It should also be noted that 2021 saw a substantial rise in points following the Covid-impacted season in 2020. Although last year didn’t see a full tournament schedule, it did include the postponed Olympic Games, which includes a major points co-efficient, leading to the large gains by some sires. After three years leading the pack, Chacco-Blue has dropped to third place, overtaken by Diamant de Semilly and Cardento and, notably, there are no fewer than 18 new horses appearing for the first time in this ranking list (identified by n/a under 2020) led by Plot Blue who jumps straight in at #16, followed by three other newbies to the list, hot on his heels: Lupicor, Cooper van de Heffinck, and Comme Il Faut.

Spotlighting #50, the Selle Français Number One d’Iso, arriving for the time time, and with only three scoring representatives – a remarkable accomplishment. Looking at the dressage sires, 60% of the top 10 are new arrivals in the ranking, with Ampere – straight in at #3 – and Negro at #10, notable for both only counting the points of five and six representatives, respectively. It’s possible that we’ll see those that didn’t appear in last year’s list slowly edging out the old guard in the next couple of years. Last year’s leading eventing sire, Contendro I, has now been eclipsed by Jaguar Mail and Diarado, ranked #1 and #2, respectively, by a reasonable margin. There are two new arrivals at the bottom of this top 10, while Diamant de Semilly and Landos (with only five representatives) have each gained ground. As always, these rankings have endeavoured to create a fair comparison between those sires with a huge volume of representatives, especially in showjumping, and others with far fewer sons and daughters who are, nonetheless, performing with great distinction at an international level. We hope this provides a more beneficial analysis. ■

STATISTICS! ARE THEY REALLY MEANINGFUL?

his 18th edition of the BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY – our third digital version – includes nearly 10,000 stallions, cross-referenced to their owners/representatives in our online database. This number fluctuates marginally throughout the year as newly approved/licensed sires are added, and deceased stallions or those whose licenses have been revoked or have expired are deleted. This online format provides an interactive and dynamic database that allows owners or studfarms to self-manage their stallion entries, including uploading photos and/or videos.

CHART 1 – GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION of stallions on a global scale, per birth studbook. We have only included those countries whose total represents a significant percentage of stallions. Germany consistently occupies the largest piece of the pie at over 45%, followed by France (SF and AA), the Netherlands (KWPN, NRPS), Scandinavia (Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian Warmblood), and Belgium (BWP,

SBS, plus Zangersheide). We continue to include Thoroughbreds in our analysis as they are licensed for Warmblood breeding with virtually all the major studbooks, but have no relevance to birth countries. ‘Other’ includes Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, NZ, South Africa, North America, etc., representing virtually every continent that boasts worldclass sport horse breeding, but with a smaller percentage of approved stallions. CHARTS 2 AND 3 respectively illustrate colour and size. Typically, there are only small differences from year to year which are due more to the upgrading of information as it becomes available. However, with the inclusion of the Royal Friesian Studbook as a new member of the WBFSH in 2021, and with their horses’ renowned black uniform, this has slightly changed the chart representing colour. Due to studbook inconsistencies in the formatting of stallion lists, we crossreference information so it meets the needs of the Directory as well as, hopefully, providing a useful tool to our breeders. ■

AUCTIONS POST STRONG RESULTS DESPITE COVID-19

or the second year running, the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the global marketing of horses, although time has also

created a new sales trend with an exponential increase in the number of online auctions. Virtually every major studbook that organized well-known ‘live’ auctions of horses prior to 2020, has now created on-line platforms. A sales medium that may have been viewed with some scepticism in the beginning has now been popularly embraced. However, this trend has also spawned a somewhat worrying increase in the market for embryos, some of which have sold for prices exceeding those for well-bred foals. Of course, this has been facilitated by the evolution of modern reproductive techniques, in particular ICSI, that has allowed multiple births from one straw of semen – a practice that many breeders see as systematically dismantling an age-old system of trust and transparency. However, now that online and hybrid auctions have found a foothold, and have certainly gained an honourable reputation among wellknown studbooks, it’s not likely that they will disappear overnight as global Covid restrictions start to ease. Staying with the embryo market, and as Adriana van Tilburg stated in her analysis of the 2021 auction year in the January 2022 issue of WORLD BREEDING NEWS: “The highest price was €70,000, paid for a Kassander van’t Roosakker, out of Panama du Seigneur (Darco),” and we will naturally be keeping a close eye on such sales in 2022. For the 2021 auction year, the leading sire in sales volume was Chacco-Blue Stallion Directory 2022

with 125 offspring sold. However, the continuing popularity of Cornet Obolensky and Diamant Semilly, as well as the latter’s sons – Diarado, Domiator Z and Emerald – is still high. Adriana’s analysis included the most expensive foal of the year, Especial for Fun Z (Eldorago van de Zeshoek TN - Fit For Fun 13 x for Pleasure) – a colt who sold at the Zangersheide Quality Foal Auction for €160,000. His dam was, of course, a magical competitor at the higest level jumping with Portugal’s Luciana Diniz. With the highest price foals all being showjumping oriented, the best-selling dressage foal was Der Hit (Dynamic Dream - For Warthe M x Fürst Romancier), who sold for €80,000. Interestingly, Dynamic Dream also sired the foal ranked second in the price rankings: Dynamic in Black, out of Dancing Queen (De Niro), at €74,500. Certainly, as Adriana concluded, in some cases prices were often elevated by ‘hype’, with buyers being able to acquire some extremely well-bred horses for good prices if they didn’t meet the ‘hype’ criteria, and vice versa. As previously, buyers focused on a relatively small group of bloodlines, suggesting that a future inquiry into the success, or not, of ICSI-born foals could provide interesting reading. From an observation in Xavier Libbrecht’s editorial column in our February 2022 edition of WORLD BREEDING NEWS, the posted prices of certain non-studbook organized auctions were disappearing from online with 24 hours. EXPLANATORY NOTES • Life No: When stallions are sold and/or change nationality, a birth number may be lost and remain

unknown, or a new registration number subsequently issued by another licensing studbook. To date, the 10-digit ULN (Unique Life Number) has not been adopted universally. • Birth studbook: For the majority, ‘part-bred’ means a Thoroughbred/Warmblood cross. Part-bred stallions are typically approved or licensed later in life based on their own or their offsprings’ competition results. In some cases, no WBFSH-recognized studbook may have existed in the stallion’s home country at the time of birth. Similarly, birth studbooks may have merged and former acronyms may now be meaningless to the majority of breeders. We have, therefore, adopted either the new studbook name, where it is provided and recognized, or used ‘unknown’. Although the WBFSH does not recognize the Jockey Club as an independent studbook, many Thoroughbreds (designated by the ‘xx’ suffix) are approved/licensed for Warmblood breeding by a WBFSH member studbook. Special note: Only full members and association studbooks in good standing with the WBFSH are included in the directory so, from time to time, a studbook and its stallions may be deleted. • Clones: When a clone is approved/licensed as a sire by a member studbook of the WBFSH he qualifies for inclusion in the Stallion Directory. When a clone is listed in the Directory, we will add (Clone) in parenthesis following their birth name. Similarly, in the ‘Breeder’ column, the name of the original stallion breeder will be followed by the clone’s breeder (where known). • Colour: Among the world’s studbooks, nomenclature for horse colours are as diverse as the colours themselves. In general, we have adopted the birth studbook’s recorded colour, although they may not be universal. For instance, in Europe, a black and white horse is typically known as Piebald, but may be designated as Black Tobiano or Pinto by some breeding associations. It should be noted that the various shades of ‘bay’ (bright bay, brown bay, black bay, … etc.) have been condensed to either ‘bay’ (B) or ‘dark bay’ (DB) in the Stallion Directory. The online database provides a drop-down menu for colour abbreviations. • Name: Where known, we have included a former name by which a stallion might have been commonly recognized, although this information is not always notified to us. Similarly, where a stallion’s name has been changed with the addition of a sponsor prefix or suffix, we have primarily retained the original name, with a few exceptions. (Hopefully, this will help to avoid any confusion as some competing horses’ names have changed several times during short periods.) • Contact Information: Please note that the names in the ‘contacts’ column in the stallion section are cross-referenced alphabetically to the contacts section. It should also be noted that to avoid alphabetical confusion, proper names appear first; i.e. Lewitz Gestüt, rather than Gestüt Lewitz.
