Is New Reality Series ‘Cosby Show’ for Muslims? Has a Bill Cosby show equivalent finally arrived for Muslim Americans with the TLC network’s reality series, “All American Muslim?” The series, which premiered last month, could be that first step of offering an alternative image to common stereotypes for American Muslims. It centers around five Shi’ite Muslim American families who all have roots in southern Lebanon, living in the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Dearborn. “We really hope that we’re able to give viewers that sort of rare chance to kind of get immersed and enjoy the ride with this community that they have previously been completely unexposed to, said Alon Orstein, an executive producer for the series. According to a TLC press release, the series, “shows how these individuals negotiate universal family issues while remaining faithful to the traditions and beliefs of their faith.” A year before its debut, CBS news anchor Katie Couric declared that “bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country was one of the most disturbing stories to surface,” in 2010. Couric was referring to the proposed New York “Park 51” Islamic Center that generated national media attention and criticisms. “Maybe we need a Muslim version of ‘The Cosby Show,’” she said. “I know that sounds

crazy, but “The Cosby Show” did so much to change attitudes about African Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand.” Media experts, organizers, and advocates in the Arab and Muslim community agree with Couric, but believe that while “All American Muslim,” may not have the same immediate impact on mainstream America that “The Cosby Show” did, this new reality series is a much needed small step in the right direction. Normalizing Muslims Amina Sharif, communications director for the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) office in Chicago, said she is hopeful for the new series, because it will offer “a more mainstream image of American Muslims.” “They are often stereotyped and misunderstood because of negative portrayals in media and pop culture. [This program] is normalizing Muslims,” said Sharif. “That’s the way [of] American culture – we needed ‘The Cosby Show’ to help normalize African American families. In this society public opinion is shaped mainly by media and pop culture,” she said.

Poll:

Do you believe more TV shows are needed to highlight the lifestyle of American-Muslims? Yes

Zahra Billoo, executive director for CAIR, Northern California, echoed Sharif’s hopes for the program, adding that the program may be especially helpful because “over 60 percent of Americans have never met a Muslim,” she said citing a 2010 poll by TIME Magazine.

Former Phoenix Bishop declines award after outcry By Newsfinder from AP PHOENIX (AP) _ The former Catholic bishop in charge of the Phoenix diocese has turned down an award after an outcry from victims of clergy abuse. Former Bishop Thomas O’Brien was to be honored by Catholic Community Foundation in April. Foundation officials told the Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/se1Y9m ) that he gave no reason for turning down the award. But the award announcement two weeks ago spurred immediate negative reaction. O’Brien signed an agreement with the Maricopa County attorney’s office in 2003 in which he acknowledged protecting priests who were abusive and endangering children. He served as bishop from 1982 to

2003. The foundation’s president, Donna Marino, apologized in a prepared statement Wednesday to those who were hurt by the decision to honor the bishop. ``The executive committee of the board of directors did not anticipate the reaction of the public before the selection was made, which was based solely on (O’Brien’s) role as the founder of the organization and the event,’’ she said. ``We are sorry for any pain and suffering this has caused victims of abuse and their families. We offer our apologies for not having shown more understanding and compassion.’’ The foundation, founded in 1983, became an independent charity in 2003, although it retains offices at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in downtown Phoenix. It has assets of almost $50 million and made grants of more than $2.2 million to

nonprofit, mostly Catholic organizations in fiscal 2011. Since it was founded, it has made grants of more than $20 million in the community. The agreement O’Brien signed with prosecutors clearly outlined his role in failing to prevent sexual abuse by the clergy. ``He allowed Roman Catholic priests under his supervision to have contact with minors after becoming aware of allegations of criminal sexual misconduct,’’ the agreement read. ``He shall further acknowledge transferring offending priests to situations where children could be further victimized.’’ The bishop was involved in a fatal hit-andrun accident that cost him his position just weeks after signing the document. He was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident and served a sentence of community service and probation. Since then, O’Brien has kept a low profile, occasionally presiding at Masses and attending diocesan events. He celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest in May with a private Mass and dinner.

conducted in 2010, found that “roughly half the country (49 percent) holds an unfavorable view of Islam, compared with 37 percent who have a favorable view.” In October 2002, 47 percent said they had a favorable view of Islam and 39 percent said they had an unfavorable view. In September of 2011, the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, a CBS Poll found that one in three Americans think Muslim Americans are more sympathetic to terrorists than other Americans. Warren David, president of the AmericanArab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) said he hopes this series reaches these audiences and hopes they see beyond the stereotypes. “There are many people who don’t watch public or educational programming, but do watch TLC,” he said. Hopeful, But With Some Reservations While Muslim and Arab community leaders and media are generally optimistic about the positive impact the show could have on American Muslims, some did express reservations. Many stressed the importance of not using the show as a way to teach the American public about Islam. Citing the various ways that different Muslims practice Islam, community members were concerned that the religious practices of these five families would become the face of Islam. “I hope audiences understand that much of what they’re seeing isn’t Islam, it’s the person’s culture,” said Sharif of CAIR, Chicago. Others questioned the choice to place the show in Dearborn, Michigan, which has the highest concentration of Arabs in America.

According to a Gallup poll, 35 percent of Muslims in America are African American and 18 percent are Asian. Additionally, the majority of Arab Americans are Christian, and according to the Muslim Public Affairs Council, only approximately 20 percent of Muslims are Arab. The gap between the reality of the American Muslim landscape and the show’s portrayal of the Muslim community frustrated many Muslim Americans. After the premiere, #AllAmericanMuslim was a popular trending topic in social media, and several viewers sounded off angrily about the lack of ethnic diversity. On Facebook, Ola Said commented, “This is a group of Lebanese American families in a localized spot in a city in MI. These examples do not portray an All American Muslim at all.” HussamA tweeted: “The risk with shows like #AllAmericanMuslim is that as existing stereotypes are challenged, new ones are perpetuated. Oh well.” Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR Michigan, expressed the danger behind conflating the terms Arab and Muslim, “When nothing but Arabs are depicted it shifts people’s minds to the Middle East. There’s a lot of negative stigma attached in the minds of Americans with the Middle East.” The national spotlight on Dearborn within the past couple of years offers a potential rationale for choosing that city as a setting. In May 2010, Rima Fakih, from Dearborn, became the first Muslim and Arab American to win Miss USA. Nevada politician Sharron Angle proclaimed that Dearborn was operating under sharia law during her campaign for US Senate. And in June this year, Pastor Terry Jones, known for burning a Qu’ran, went to Dearborn for the second time to protest Islam.

However, Alon Orstein, one of the executive producers of the series, offered a different explanation for the choice of Michigan and Dearborn in particular. “We found this group of families that we just fell in love with …the natural drama we look for in our shows, they had it going on in spades,” said Orstein. And for Orstein, diversity with respect to characters’ religiosity was important, “we did achieve a level of diversity with respect to how our different characters experience their faith.” Other criticisms of the show came from antiMuslim groups, who created a “Boycott TLC for New Program ‘All-American Muslim’” Facebook page. However, according to Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York who helped with the show’s social media campaign, those Islamophobic criticisms were drowned out online by discussions (and disagreements) amongst Muslims about the show. Some disapproved of the characters’ actions, in particular Shadia Amen, who described herself as the black sheep of her family. Imani Bsj, commented on Facebook, “If she was born Muslim I just can’t understand how she has all those tattoos.” But others related to her choices. Feda FeFe Saleh posted, “I’m a Muslim who prays 5 times a day but doesn’t wear hijab. Do I think Shadia exposed a little too much about her lifestyle, yes, but this is not for me to judge.” Some community members expressed hope that more diversity will be featured as the show progresses. But they are generally pleased that the show exists. “Right now, we’ll take what we can get,” said Sarsour.

Do I have to register for selective service to become a U.S. Citizen? Muslim Voice By Eric Bjotvedt The Military Selective Service Act (MSSA) requires every male living in the United States to register between the ages of 18 and 25. One part of the MSSA offers a way around potential problems if a male fails to register. According to MSSA §12(g), a person may not be denied a right, privilege, or benefit under Federal law by reason of failure to present himself for and submit to registration under Section 3 of the Military Selective Service Act if the requirement for the person to so register has terminated or become inapplicable to the person, and the person shows by a preponderance of the evidence that the failure to register was not a knowing and willful failure to register. Meeting the first requirement is easy by presenting a passport or Form I-94 showing that he did not enter the country until he was 26 years old or older. Or, if he is age eligible, he is not living in the United States but is here on a temporary visa. Satisfying the second one is harder, but it is not impossible. The burden is on the non-registrant to prove his failure was not knowing and willful. Also, he needs to prove this to the USCIS which is the agency granting United States citizenship. Usually providing a written explanation or oral testimony during the interview will suffice to show the failure was not knowing and willful. For example,

many times the person in question did not speak English when he arrived and therefore did not know or understand the registration requirement. Or perhaps he did not attend a high school in the United States, where most young

men are exposed to the registration requirement. Keep in mind that, since a military draft has not been in force since 1973, Selective Service is not a topic that comes up often such that not hearing about it is believable. So if a man does not hear about the requirement in high school, and, if he never went to high school in the United States, then he is unlikely to know about the requirement at all. These factors and explanations will be weighed by USCIS as they determine whether or not the person in question can establish the required good moral character for US citizenship. Some other things to keep in mind include the fact that men born between March 29, 1957 and December 31, 1959 were never required to register. That is because men born during these dates had no way to register when they turned 18. The registration requirement was suspended between 1975 and 1980. When the requirement was reinstated though, it applied only to men born on or after January 1, 1960. Men born before March 29, 1957 were required to register, however, an immigrant born before that period who entered the United States after March 29, 1975 was exempted. Failure to register with Selective Service will generally not affect the eligibility of a man who is 31 or older when applying for naturalization, but, as stated above, Selective Service registration is not a requirement for

Lessons Learned from the Recall of Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce In the event you might have been living on another planet over the last year or so and the name Russell Pearce fails to resonate, suffice it to say Arizona’s State Senator Russell Pearce is the chief architect of SB1070, legislation that requires law enforcement to determine the immigration status of anyone pulled over, detained or arrested if there is “reasonable suspicion” that person is the country illegally. Many aspects of the law are on hold as the Obama administration fights it in court. As the election results now stand, Republican Jerry Lewis will represent District 18. As for Pearce, he will shoulder the dubious distinction of being the first sitting Senate president and the first Arizona legislator to lose a recall election. Anti-immigrant extremism “Anti-immigrant extremism is a political loser,” according to Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice. “It mobilizes Latino voters who want acceptance and respect, and it angers sensible Republicans, independents and Democrats who want their leaders to focus on bread-and-butter issues, not hot-button cultural issues.” And if Arizona is known for anything (with the possible exception of being the state that doggedly fought the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. holiday) it is known for its stringent approach to immigration. It has been Arizona’s approach to immigration that gave rise to The Real Arizona Coalition. A group of organizations and individuals determined to return Arizona “to the state they all love.” The Coalition’s approach was to facilitate a series of what came to be called, Arizona Immigration Solutions Conference. Solutions conferences “The goal of the conferences is to encourage policymakers to work from a solid base of facts and begin a serious community-wide discussion about the best ways to address this important issue,” said Todd Landfried, spokesman for Arizona Employers for Immigration Reform. “These conferences are not

about whether employer sanctions or SB1070 are good or bad laws, it’s about whether they’re working. Making sure that our tax dollars are spent wisely and effectively is a fair expectation for citizens to demand of their government.” Well attended conferences were held in Phoenix, Prescott, Tucson, Mesa, and Yuma. Panel participants ran the gamut from farmers who have felt the negative economic impact of SB1070 to a VP of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce. For more information on these conferences visit the Coalition’s website at : www.azeir.org/aisc/

B. Hayes Compromise of 1877, federal troops were pulled out of the South and the protection Blacks had become accustomed to was no more. The Plessy v Ferguson Supreme Court decision of 1896 made “separate but equal” law and further contributed to the eviscerating of civil and human rights; de facto rights that would not be fully attained again until the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965.

Blacks are absent The fact that few African Americans attended these conferences is indicative of the glacial pace taken by many Blacks to identify with the immigration movement. It is not unheard of to hear Blacks moaning, “They are taking our jobs!” “They,” of course are those coming across the southern border from Mexico. It was not all that long ago Blacks were the “immigrants” accused of taking jobs from whites. Migratory routes that led to Detroit, Chicago, and New York found Blacks competing for jobs traditionally enjoyed by whites. A willingness to work for less pay made Black labor more appealing to employers; all to the chagrin of white workers who found ways to let newly arriving Blacks know they were not welcome; a far cry from the welcoming mat that was rolled out during the Maafa (enslavement). Mexico to the rescue Among the many provisions of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was the law that required Blacks, who had escaped from their place of enslavement and found themselves in free states, to be returned to their captives; making it virtually impossible for any enslaved Black man or woman to feel safe knowing that at any moment a bounty hunter could capture and re-enslave them. A little know fact is that the Mexican government opened its borders to all escaped Blacks who were fortunate enough to find their way to Mexico. Lessons learned It has been said freedom is a constant struggle. Once attained, one can ill-afford to sit back and enjoy its fruits without maintaining constant vigilance. The rights achieved by Blacks during Reconstruction were quickly diminished with the arrival of the Rutherford

HAJI BABA

The recalling of Senator Russell Pearce provides an opportunity for Blacks, Chicanos, and others who profess to love justice to sit down together and further assess what the individual and collective implications are. Such a discussion should include a review of what our common interests are and what it will take to realize them. It was the great Abolitionist Frederick Douglass who admonished, “Talking doesn’t solve all problems, but no problems can be solved unless there is first some talking.” To your journey!

The Global Revolt of 2011 - A Turning Point in History New America Media, Commentary, Roger Burbach Editor’s Note: Occupy Oakland is part of a global movement that is questioning the basic structures of the political and economic system to an extent not seen since 1968. Whether it will succeed in changing these structures is unclear. But it has already created something far more powerful: a global shift in consciousness. OAKLAND, Calif.—“Shut It Down,” “No More Shipping for the 1 Percent” and “Death to Capitalism” proclaimed some of the banners near me as I joined thousands of demonstrators who converged on the Port of Oakland on a sunny afternoon. This city is part of a global movement that has changed the terms of the political debate, stealing much of the thunder from the Tea Party movement and shaking governments around the world in a way not seen since the 1960s. It started with Tunisia and the Arab Spring, then spread to Spain and the Indignados movement, to Chile with the massive student mobilization for an end to education for profit, to England with the urban riots, to Athens with the massive demonstrations against the tyranny of the Euro and the financial markets, and then to New York with the Occupy Wall Street movement. Two comparable uprisings have rocked the course of history. The revolutions of 1848 in Europe— known as the Spring Time of the Peoples— challenged monarchs, aristocrats and autocrats alike as Karl Marx and Frederick Engels penned the Communist Manifesto. Disturbances and revolutions occurred in more than 50 countries and thousands died with untold numbers fleeing abroad.

Then, exactly one century and two decades later, a broad anti-systemic movement roiled the globe on many fronts: the Tet offensive in Vietnam, the global antiwar movement, the student and worker uprising in Paris, the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia, the riots in Chicago at the Democratic convention and the Mexican student protests that led to the massacre at Tlatelolco Plaza. None of these historic revolts was successful in terms of taking power, but they changed the world in profound ways, just as the great revolt of 2011 is doing. As in 1968, today’s uprising is antisystemic—calling for fundamental changes in the world’s political and economic order. The youthful demonstrators of Tahrir Square in Cairo and the young people camped out in Zuccotti Park in New York see no future in the current governments that control their countries, be they authoritarian or democratic. As Nobel economics laureate Joseph Stiglitz writes, “Social protest has found fertile ground everywhere: a sense that the ‘system’ has failed and the conviction that even in a democracy, the electoral process will not set things right—at least not without strong pressure from the street.” A strong sense of solidarity and communication exists among these movements. The initial squatters in New York City openly acknowledged that they were inspired by the revolts in Tunisia and Egypt. When the police crackdown occurred against Occupy Oakland, Egyptians sent communiques of support and marched to the U.S. embassy in Cairo calling for an end to police violence in Oakland. Weeks later a group of media and political activists in Cairo sent out a call for international support against the growing military repression in their country: “We are still fighting for our revolution. We

are marching, occupying, striking, shutting things down. And you, too, are marching, occupying, striking, shutting things down. We know from the outpouring of support we received in January that the world was watching us closely and even inspired by our revolution. We felt closer to you than ever before. And now, it’s your turn to inspire us as we watch the struggles of your movements. ... If they stifle our resistance, the 1% will win- in Cairo, New York, London, Rome - everywhere. But while the revolution lives our imaginations knows no bounds. We can still create a world worth living.” Oct. 15 marked an international upsurge in the movement. The headline of the Guardian newspaper of London proclaimed: “Occupy Anti-Capitalism Protests Spread Around the World.” Tens of thousands rallied and marched in London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Rome, Sydney, Hong Kong, Toronto, Santiago and Rio de Janeiro and scores of other cities around the globe. Although the demonstrators were largely peaceful, the police cracked down in many cities and clashes in Rome became particularly violent. A banner in Rome read, “People of Europe Rise Up.” In Berlin banners called for an end to capitalism and in Frankfurt protestors fought with police in front of the European Central Bank. These were the largest global protests since the international mobilization in February 2003 tried to stop the Bush administration from going to war in Iraq. But the protest movement today—driven by the Great Recession that threw the global economy into crisis—runs deeper and is far more resilient than that of 2003. At the heart of the crisis are international banks that got bailed out as millions of people lose their jobs, their life’s savings, their homes and their daily bread. As Naomi Wolf proclaimed, the “enemy is a global ‘corporatocracy’ that has purchased governments and legislatures, created its own armed enforcers, engaged in systemic economic fraud, and plundered treasuries and ecosystems.” Meanwhile, the “corporatocracy” is determined to maintain its power and privileges as it comes under increasing scrutiny. In Europe, draconian austerity policies are being imposed to rescue the Euro, policies that will condemn Europe

and much of the world to stagnant economic growth for years to come. In Greece and Italy, democracy is shunted aside as elections are avoided and technocrats beholden to the big banks are put in charge. For much of the post-World War II period it was believed that the inherent conflict between the “free market” and democracy could be reconciled. The electorate would refrain from interfering in the markets in exchange for steady employment, economic growth and access to an ever-increasing array of consumer commodities. Now this compact is broken. The financial markets ruin any country and its populace if it refuses to accept austerity and a decline in its standard of living. The “sovereign debt” must be paid insist the bankers and the financial markets. In effect democracy is under siege. In the United States, a country where ideology and the left have a weak legacy, the top 1 percent get more than 20 percent of the national income, up from 9 percent when Ronald Reagan took office. Perhaps the most telling figure is that one-tenth of the top 1 percent earn as much as the bottom 120 million people. This is why the slogans “Occupy Wall Street” and “We are the 99 percent” captured the imagination of people across the United States when the first tents went up in Zuccatti Park in New York City. The genius of the movement is its refusal to tie itself to a particular set of demands. The grievances are so extensive—a lack of jobs, a unequal distribution of income, a decline in educational opportunities, a lack of affordable housing, the high cost of medical care, corporate funding of elections—that the entire system has to be taken on. The police assaults against the urban encampments can’t snuff out the movement. It will resurface in other ways and other forms. As a post-eviction statement by Occupy Wall Street, New York read: “You can’t evict an idea whose time has come.” We are in a volatile and unpredictable era. What we do know is that the great revolt of 2011 marks a turning point in history as a global mass movement takes on the economic and political forces that are plundering our world.

US bank earnings hit highest level in 4 years

By DEREK KRAVITZ AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) _ U.S. bank earnings rose over the summer to their highest level in more than four years, while the number of troubled banks fell for the second straight quarter, federal regulators reported Tuesday. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said the banking industry earned $35.3 billion in the third quarter. That’s up from $23.8 billion in the same period last year. More than 60 percent of banks reported improved earnings. The FDIC also says there were 844 banks on its confidential ``problem’’ list in the quarter, or roughly 11.5 percent of all federally insured banks. That was down from 865 the April-June period, the first quarter in five years in which the number declined. Banks with assets exceeding $10 billion drove the bulk of the earnings growth. They made up 1.4 percent of all banks but accounted for about $29.8 billion of the industry’s earnings in the third quarter. Those are the largest banks, such as Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. Most of these banks have recovered with help from federal bailout money and record-low borrowing rates.

Netflix hits 20-month low as debt worries mount

FDIC officials said the industry continues to struggle with flat growth in loans. Banks’ loan balances increased $21.8 billion in the third quarter. That was a modest gain, but it marked the second straight quarter in three years that there has been growth in balances, the FDIC said. So far this year, 90 banks have failed. That’s down from the 157 banks shuttered last year _ the most for one year since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992 _ and 140 in 2009. Most of the banks that have struggled or failed have been small or regional institutions. They depend heavily on loans for commercial property and development _ sectors that have suffered huge losses. As companies shut down during the recession, they vacated shopping malls and office buildings financed by those loans. Still, large banks are less profitable than they were before the 2008 financial crisis. As a result, many are shrinking their staffs. Some credit rating agencies have been warning that the European debt crisis could hit the biggest U.S. banks. Stocks of financial companies have been especially pummeled in the stock market’s decline in recent months. The FDIC is backed by the government, and its deposits are guaranteed up to $250,000 per account. Apart from its deposit insurance fund, the agency also has tens of billions in loss reserves.

Received by Newsfinder from AP SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Netflix’s stock price has plunged to its lowest point in more than 20 months. The latest sell-off came after Netflix Inc. raised $400 million by taking on more debt and selling more stock. That move intensified concerns about the public relations and competitive pressures facing the video subscription service.

Netflix shares dropped by $3.22, or 4.3 percent, to $71.25 in afternoon trading Tuesday. It sagged as low as $69 earlier in the session. That’s the lowest it’s been since March 2010. Netflix shares have been in free fall since the company angered subscribers by raising its U.S. prices by as much as 60 percent. Netflix hit a peak of nearly $305 a share around the same time that the higher prices were announced in July.

9 What Teachers Don’t Get About ‘Low-Performing’ Students www.AZMuslimVoice.com

New America Media, Commentary, Yvette Jackson All students should have the chance to be motivated to achieve in ways that are usually expected of those students labeled “gifted,” but that’s not the case. Often educators and parents feel a sense of hopelessness in the ability of our leaders to enact policies that can transform public education. What has been ignored in policies that attempt to address underachievement is the focus on the individual. Instead, there has been a proliferation of practices that lump students together into programs of generalized instruction, as if all the causes for the underachievement are the same. While the learning process is pretty much the same for all of us, what ignites learning and stimulates that learning to the point of achievement is different for everyone. We are all born with an intrinsic desire to learn. Just go into any school around the country right now and watch kindergarten students of any background enter school and you will see children excited with anticipation. They anticipate having their inner drive to learn quenched and want to collect on the promise made to them by their parents that in school they would learn and be motivated to succeed. However, as Dr. James Comer, who teaches child psychology at Yale, illustrates, motivation from academic success is an acquired taste. In other words, students are motivated to achieve academically by the identification and development of their interests through enrichment and through opportunities to research and apply their earning in stimulating and authentic ways. Those who create programs for students labeled as gifted get the point about

NATIONAL

how to motivate achievement in school. But for students in schools tagged as “low performing,” their anticipation is quickly squelched by tests that identify under-developed skill areas, which in turn become the overwhelming focus of their instruction. This often leads to the exclusion of instructional approaches that stimulate their interests, strengths, or engagement.

DECEMBER 2011

strengths and a decrease in underdeveloped skills. Districts must detail how they will give teachers the flexibility to create practices that provide enrichment and promote self-directed learning that uses students’ strengths to build their skills. Professional development should help teachers activate, guide,

These two goals alone would change two pernicious policies. One is the elimination of the term “achievement gap.” This term has fostered measuring the distance in achievement between races as opposed to addressing the growth of individual students to close the gap between their potential and their achievement. The second is

Instead, school is repetitive, boring, and lacks enrichment. This cycle leads to failure and the harshest punishment of all: Many students never experience success in school and their motivation for academic success is extinguished. All students can experience school as a place where they can learn, grow, and be successful, but that takes bold direction from the local to the state and federal levels. Leaders must understand that individual student interests and abilities have to be addressed, engaged, and supported. This understanding is critical if our students are going to meet the promise of the new Common Core State Standards to be college and career ready. The standards require student engagement so they are motivated to be confident as self-directed learners. The question for policymakers willing to go down this path is: how will they help all students develop the acquired taste for academic success? Two major shifts would transform how we motivate academic achievement. *First, change the expectation for all students to that of intellectual development and self-directed learning and not just literacy skills. Instead of focusing on underdeveloped skills, change assessment to identify students’ strengths and focus on individual learning growth. This growth would be indicated through an increase of

and assess the learning process. This would include exploring and adapting the latest research from cognitive and neuroscience. *Second, policies should reflect the understanding that self-directed learning requires investment, ownership, and responsibility from students. This ownership would be established through individualized plans for student-generated, teacherguided learning goals. The goals would include identification and application of student interests and strengths for meeting instructional outcomes; identification of skills to be developed; and opportunities for mentoring, tutoring, and/or internships.

shifting away from the practice of using tests that provide a snapshot of where students are at a particular time. That status quo would be replaced by dynamic approaches that encourage students to work with teachers to assess their own growth through their responses, classroom work, and other instructional opportunities. These changes not only transform how we “do school” but they ensure that students experience individual success that builds their taste for self-directed learning and academic achievement. It is in such change that we can find true hope for transforming how we do school and where we will find concrete ideas to act on this hope.

FCC chairman opposes AT&T takeover of T-Mobile By RYAN NAKASHIMA

Documents: Kissinger calls Jews `self-serving’ By BARRY SCHWEID

AP Business Writer

AP Diplomatic Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has come out against the merger of cellphone giant AT&T and T-Mobile USA. Julius Genachowski made his position known in a document he circulated to fellow commissioners Tuesday. Genachowski recommended sending AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile to an administrative law judge for review and a hearing. That’s what the FCC does when it opposes a merger. According to an FCC official familiar with the matter, an agency analysis concluded the merger would result in higher prices for consumers, less innovation, less investment in the U.S. and fewer U.S. jobs. The review also cast doubt on AT&T’s claim that only the merger would allow it build out ``4G’’ high-speed wireless Internet access to cover 97 percent of the population, up from about 80 percent. The agency concluded AT&T would likely do so anyway to remain competitive with Verizon Wireless. The official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. AT&T spokesman Larry Solomon said in a statement that the chairman’s action was ``disappointing.’’ ``It is yet another example of a

government agency acting to prevent billions in new investment and the creation of many thousands of new jobs at a time when the U.S. economy desperately needs both,’’ he said. ``At this time, we are reviewing all options.’’ The FCC would be the second government agency to oppose the deal. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court in Washington in August to stop it, and that trial is expected to start Feb. 13. Genachowski’s proposed order recommends the administrative law judge begin the hearing after the trial is done. The deal announced in March would vault the combined No. 2 carrier AT&T and No. 4 T-Mobile into the top spot ahead of Verizon. Dallas-based AT&T has about 101 million wireless subscribers. T-Mobile, the Bellevue, Wash.-based subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG of Germany, has 34 million. Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, has about 108 million, while Sprint Nextel Corp. has 53 million.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ American Jewish groups lobbying the Nixon White House on behalf of their Soviet brethren got under Henry Kissinger’s skin in demanding intense pressure on Moscow to the point that he denounced them to a White House colleague as self-serving ``bastards,’’ newly released documents indicate.

the State Department, Kissinger, who was Haig’s deputy, said to Garment: ``Is there a more self-serving group of people than the Jewish community?’’ Kissinger is Jewish. Garment, also Jewish, replied: ``None in the world.’’ At this point, Kissinger was quoted as saying ``What the hell do they think they are accomplishing?’’

Among appeals flooding the White House was one from the Israeli prime minister, Golda Meir, to President Richard M. Nixon in August 1972 asking him to protest to the Kremlin its levying of fees for exit permits. The White House, defending its strategy of quiet diplomacy, sought to assure the American Jews that Nixon was very concerned about the plight of Soviet Jews, had taken up the issue with Soviet leaders directly and remained convinced that quiet diplomacy was the best approach, the documents related. A White House official, Leonard Garment, saying he was flooded with letters and phone calls with Jewish appeals, asked Kissinger for help and guidance. The late Alexander Haig, then Nixon’s national security adviser, sent him Mrs. Meir’s letter and said, ``We will have to consider the best means by which to proceed.’’ According to transcripts released by

Kissinger went on: ``You can’t even tell bastards anything in confidence because they’ll leak it.’’ But Kissinger said he would take up the issue with Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin and also meet again with Jewish leaders. ``They ought to remember what this administration has done,’’ he said. The remarks were contained in documents dealing with U.S.-Soviet relations released by the State Department. A call to Kissinger’s New York office seeking comment was not immediately returned late Thursday.

The ‘All-American Anti-Immigrant Laws Are Being Used as a Smoke Screen Muslim’ Reality TV Show La Noticia, Commentary, Diego Barahona

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s no mystery that since the beginning of the recession the number one topic on voters’ minds has been job creation. But what happens when politicians fail miserably in reaching this goal? For North Carolina legislator Frank Iler, the answer is simple: create a

Colorlines, News Report TLC premiered “All-American Muslim”, a reality TV show that follows the lives of five American Muslim families in Dearborn, the Michigan town that’s home to one of the nation’s largest Muslim communities. The show’s purported aim is to help dispel misrepresentations of Muslim American. And while we’re hoping it’s all that it’s cracked up to be, there’s plenty of reason to be weary about it. It’s being produced by Shed Media, the company that’s also responsible for dramafilled shows like “The Real Housewives of New York City” and “Basketball Wives.” Neither series represents women in a positive light, to put it lightly. But there’s a chance that this show could be different. Namely,Dearbor n-native

Mike Mosallam is involved in the show’s development. Mosallam is Muslim and works as the director of film initiatives for Michigan’s Wayne County. So let’s hope there’s a balance and we actually get what TLC promises: “A powerful new eight-part series that goes inside the rarely seen world of American Muslims to uncover a unique community struggling to balance faith and nationality in a post 9/11 world.” So far they’ve got a lot to prove. The show’s logo on Shed Media’s website doesn’t really say “AllAmerican” to me. In fact, the rustic and fringed font combined with the red bars in the background all end up reading to me as “jail” or “circus” themes. Compare the identity to the right with all the other TV shows that use the term American in the titles and this one seems a little off.

unemployment levels have remained almost unchanged in North Carolina. According to the Employment Security Commission, the unemployment rate in September 2010 was 10 percent. A year later, it stands at 10.5 percent.

The second of the 10 points listed in the plan ‘100 Days That Will Change North Carolina’ said that they would look for ways to reduce taxes in order to make

committee in the House of Representatives with the goal of drafting anti-immigrant laws. “My personal opinion is that we need to make North Carolina as unwelcome for any illegal alien from wherever they come from,” Iler told reporters from Star News a week after Continental’s announcement. Coincidence? According to Iler, this is a priority and the committee’s first meeting is scheduled for early December. The committee of nine individuals (six Republicans and three Democrats) will review laws and programs related to immigration in the state and will propose new antiimmigrant laws to the General Assembly. This tactic is not new, according to a report by the New Yorkbased The Americas Society, which analyzed 53 cities that imposed local laws to “combat” undocumented immigrants between 2006 and 2008.

smoke screen of anti-immigrant laws. Iler was elected in 2010 to the State House of Representatives for District 17, Brunswick County. During his election campaign, Iler supported a plan called ‘100 Days That Will Change North Carolina.’ This document stated that if Republicans won the elections, within three months, they would eliminate burdensome restrictions on private enterprise, which would generate more jobs. Election time came and Republican legislators won the majority in the State House of Representatives for the first time in over a century. The 100 days came and went. Today, almost a year later,

this a more competitive state and attract investment from large companies. For Congressman Iler, this was a crucial point given that Continental had plans to invest $500 million to build a new plant in his county of Brunswick. Three weeks ago, Continental announced that its new plant would not be built in Iler’s county after all; it will not even be built in North Carolina. The multi-million dollar investment, which will generate an estimated 1,700 jobs, will be built in South Carolina. How do you remedy this embarrassing situation? Iler has a strategy: Use controversy as a distraction. The Republican legislator is heading a new

The study’s conclusion was that these kinds of laws were more common in places with high rates of poverty and unemployment. In cities like Payson, Ariz., Bellaire, Ohio and Athens, Ala., there are fewer workers in general, both immigrant and non-immigrant, but the economic impact from the antiimmigrant ordinances has been negative. Instead of wasting time with smoke screens, state Congressman Iler should be concentrating on finding ways to generate more jobs. The numbers don’t lie. Ask farmers in Arizona, Georgia or Alabama if their antiimmigrant laws have helped improve their economies.

India grants bail for LIBYA’S NEW LEADERS wrongfully arrested ANNOUNCE TRANSITIONAL CABINET Muslims NEW DELHI (AP) _ A Mumbai court Wednesday granted bail to nine Muslim men who have been held in jail since being wrongfully arrested for a series of blasts in western India that killed 37 people in 2006. The court released seven of the men after a Muslim welfare group posted 50,000 rupees ($1,000) bail for each of them, said Gulzar Azmi, a representative of the group. However, two of the men were not released because of allegations they were involved in a separate series of explosions on suburban Mumbai trains that also occurred in 2006.

Human rights groups have long pressed for the release of the men, who were arrested soon after the blasts occurred in the town of Malegaon, around 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment capital. The explosions, in a market crowded with Muslim shoppers, killed 37 people and injured 100 others. Hindu militants confessed early this year that they were responsible for the blasts. But the Muslim men remained in jail as the court case continued.

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi was former heir apparent

By RAMI AL-SHAHEIBI and RYAN LUCAS Associated Press TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) _ Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, considered Moammar Gadhafi’s heir apparent, long drew Western favor by touting himself as a liberalizing reformer but then staunchly backed his father in his brutal crackdown on rebels in the regime’s final days. Moammar Gadhafi’s second son, 39, went underground as Tripoli fell to revolutionary forces in late August and his whereabouts remained unknown even after Gadhafi was captured and killed by revolutionary forces on Oct. 20.

September, where the government has said it is treating him as a refugee. Their mother, Safiya, and sister Aisha fled to neighboring Algeria.

an active role in France’s early support for the Libyan rebels, alleged that Seif al-Islam was at least as much to blame for past atrocities against Libyans as his father.

Seif al-Islam presented a dapper image to the West, with his shaved head and fashionable glasses. He pushed for modernization in a country crippled by decades of his father’s idiosyncratic regime, and advocated normalizing Libya’s long-strained relations with the West. In a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, he even spoke of moving Libya from one-man rule to a constitutional democracy.

``His arrest is a real important moment. It’s the real end of this war,’’ Levy said during an interview in London.

The International Criminal Court has charged Seif al-Islam and former intelligence chief Abdullah alSenoussi with crimes against humanity for the brutal crackdown on dissent as the uprising against the regime began in mid-February and escalated into a civil war. Gadhafi also had been charged.

Educated in Britain and fluent in English, Seif al-Islam found favor among prominent Western intellectuals, exhibited his paintings at galleries around the world, and won plaudits from world leaders and rights campaigners with talk of democracy and development. He was long touted as Gadhafi’s heir apparent and the man who would modernize and reform the country, but that position was always far from certain, and he faced fierce resistance from hard-liners in the regime as well as his younger brother, Muatassim, who served as national security adviser. Muatassim was also killed on Oct. 20, according to officials of the transitional government. Killed earlier in the civil war were younger brothers Seif al-Arab and Khamis. Gadhafi’s other son, al-Saadi, fled to Niger in

He earned an engineering degree in Libya and a business degree in Austria before wrapping up his education with a master’s degree and doctorate at the London School of Economics in 2008. His engagement in Libyan politics began in the 1990s, when he became the president of the Gadhafi International Foundation for Charity Associations. The organization has acted as an intermediary in several disputes and helped lead to a rapprochement between the Libya and the international community after years as a pariah.

But on Saturday, the National Transitional Council’s justice minister, Mohammed al-Alagi, told The Associated Press that Seif al-Islam had been captured deep in Libya’s desert Friday night by revolutionary forces from the western mountain town of Zintan who had been tracking him for days.

Seif al-Islam always stood apart from his siblings, who were better known for their antics and eccentricities than their achievements.

Born in 1972, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi was the oldest of seven children of Moammar and Safiya Gadhafi. He had one older half brother, Mohammed.

Seif al-Islam often acted as an envoy for his father’s regime, and in 2002 and 2003 helped broker the agreement that saw Libya renounce its weapons of mass destruction program and begin its journey back into the international fold.

But in the end, Seif al-Islam was indeed his father’s son. In a televised address five days after anti-government protests broke out in the eastern city of Benghazi as part of the wider Arab Spring uprising, a haggardlooking Seif al-Islam warned of ``rivers of blood’’ if demonstrators refused to accept government offers of reform. ``We will fight until the last man, the last woman, the last bullet,’’ he said. ``We will not lose Libya.’’ The rambling, 40-minute speech marked Seif al-Islam’s transformation from the man long viewed as the best hope for reforming his father’s regime into a fugitive wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity. French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, who played

He lobbied militants to release hostages, funded research at the London School of Economics, welcomed world leaders and Western intellectuals to his country and portrayed himself as a champion of economic and social reforms. In 2009, he aided talks in Britain that eventually secured the release of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. But his public role cost him at home, and in his rivalry with Muatassim to succeed their father. A 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable released by the website WikiLeaks said that Seif al-Islam’s ``high-profile role as the public face of the regime to the West has been a mixed blessing for him. While it has bolstered his image ... many Libyans view him as self-aggrandizing and too eager to please foreigners at the expense of Libyans’ interest.’’

Pakistan’s US envoy resigns over memo scandal Received by Newsfinder from AP By CHRIS BRUMMITT Associated Press ISLAMABAD (AP) _ Pakistan’s envoy to Washington lost a battle with the country’s powerful generals to keep his job Tuesday over allegations he wrote a memo seeking U.S. help in stopping a supposed coup in the aftermath of the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The resignation of Hussain Haqqani highlighted tensions between the country’s nominal civilian government and the army, which has ruled Pakistan for most of its history. Haqqani, a key ally of President Asif Ali Zardari, was well regarded by Obama administration officials in Washington, where many lawmakers view Pakistan with suspicion if not hostility. Although Haqqani said he hoped his stepping down would end the scandal _ which Pakistanis have called ``memogate’’ _ speculation remained over whether it could yet engulf Zardari. The unpopular leader has faced questions over whether he also knew about the mysterious memo, which right-wing, pro-army media outlets have described as treasonous. Haqqani said he stood by earlier denials he had nothing to do with the letter, which was sent soon after the bin Laden raid to then-U.S. military chief Adm. Mike Mullen. The envoy and his supporters have alleged the memo was a hoax cooked up by the military establishment to get rid of him and weaken the Zardari government and democratic institutions _ explosive charges in a country that has seen at least three military coups. The memo was made public last week by a Pakistani American businessman who

claimed to have received it from Haqqani and, following his instructions, passed it to Mullen through an intermediary. He claimed that Haqqani assured him that Zardari had approved the memo. The Pakistani government initially denied the existence of the memo, as did Mullen’s spokesman. But later the spokesman said Mullen had received it but considered it unreliable and ignored it. The memo accuses army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani of plotting to bring down the government in the aftermath of the bin Laden raid, which most Pakistanis considered a humiliating violation of their sovereignty by U.S. Navy SEALs. It asks Mullen for his ``direct intervention’’ with Kayani to prevent a coup. In return, it promises help in installing a ``new security team’’ in Islamabad that would be friendly to Washington. It also mentions policies likely to please the Obama administration but certain to enrage the army, which sets foreign policy and views itself as the sole protector of the country’s sovereignty. The memo promises the government will allow the U.S. to propose names of officials to investigate how bin Laden was able to live undetected in an army town not far from Pakistan’s version of West Point, facilitate American attempts to target militants like al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri and Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Omar, and allow the U.S. greater oversight of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. Haqqani, who offered to resign last week when the scandal broke, returned to Pakistan over the weekend to face questioning by the army and the intelligence chiefs. He told close associates he would resign if his tenure became too much of a drag on the civilian government, but was fighting to the end to keep his job.

``I have resigned to bring closure to this meaningless controversy threatening our fledgling democracy,’’ he said in a statement. ``It was an artificial crisis over an insignificant memo written by a self-centered businessman.’’ A statement from the prime minister’s office said an investigation into the memogate scandal would be conducted ``at an appropriate level’’ and ``carried out fairly, objectively and without bias.’’ The businessman who allegedly received the memo from Haqqani, Mansoor Ijaz, has led a high-profile media campaign attacking the ambassador. He said Sunday that Lt. Gen. Shuja Pasha, the head of Pakistan’s main intelligence agency, flew to London to meet with him last month. Ijaz said he provided Pasha with Blackberry and computer records pertaining to the memo and implicating Haqqani. Both the memo and the Blackberry records were leaked to the media. The conversations show Haqqani allegedly discussing the wording of the memo with Ijaz and telling him to go ahead. ``Ball is in play now. Make sure you have protected your flanks,’’ Ijaz allegedly tells Haqqani after handing over the memo. Ijaz has a history of making claims to be well connected with U.S. politicians. Under the Clinton administration, he said U.S. officials told him Sudan was willing to turn over then-fugitive bin Laden, who was taking refuge there. Ijaz said Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger rejected the deal because he was unwilling to do business with Sudan _ a claim that Berger immediately denied. It was not immediately known who would replace Haqqani, who has no family connection to the Haqqani militant network that is carrying out high-profile bombings in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Of particular importance will be whether the next ambassador is perceived to answer

to the government or to the army. The diplomatic post is a crucial one for both nations. Washington wants to work with Pakistan to defeat al-Qaida and negotiate a way out of the Afghan war. Islamabad relies on U.S. aid and diplomatic support. Relations between the two countries have soured badly over the last year, especially over the bin Laden raid, which the U.S. carried out without informing Pakistan in advance. With many American lawmakers calling for an end to U.S. aid, Haqqani was outspoken in support of continued engagement. When Mullen blamed Pakistan for aiding the Haqqani militant network after its spectacular attack against the U.S. embassy in Kabul over the summer, the ambassador went into overdrive, working the phones and persuading U.S. officials to meet him at his office, or at the Army Navy Club near the White House _ discreet conversations that helped keep some forms of military cooperation moving forward. Haqqani is also a visiting scholar at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. He is the author of a respected book on the army and Islam in Pakistan, in which he argues against a military role in the country. ``He was an extremely effective interlocutor,’’ said Shuja Nawaz, the director of the South Asia Center at the U.S.-based Atlantic Council. ``It will be difficult to find someone with his ability to translate difficult situations into a workable relationship.’’ Christine Fair, assistant professor at Georgetown University, said she didn’t expect the issue would lead to a further downturn in U.S.-Pakistan ties, saying that both countries were continuing with cooperation on targeting al-Qaida and on drone strikes in the Afghan border area. ``So we’re still getting from them what we need in terms of a bare minimum,’’ Fair said. ``It would be surprising if a new ambassador would try to sabotage that ... but you can’t rule it out.’’

Child Custody and Visitation in Arizona Muslim Voice By Susan Basal The following is a brief overview of the law in Arizona and does not take the place of a consultation with an attorney. Custody battles can be emotionally and financially destructive to parents. Research shows that conflict between parents can also have an immense negative impact on children who are caught in the middle. According to an article published by the American Psychological Association parental battles take an emotional toll on children and can lead to behavior problems, mental health issues, and increased school drop-out rates. Absent abuse or other potential harm to children, it is in the best interest of the children to have an amicable relationship with both parents. If there is bickering between spouses, parents should avoid involving their children and should try to foster a loving relationship between the child and other parent. The standard that Arizona courts use

to determine custody is what is in the best interests of the child. According to Arizona Revised Statute 25-403, the court considers many factors some of which include, the wishes of the child as to the custodian, the child’s adjustment to home, school, and community, the mental and physical health of all parties, and which parent is more likely to allow the child continuing contact with the other parent (absent a determination of domestic violence or child abuse.)

custody or equal parenting time. In cases involving domestic violence, control, fear, joint custody may not be the best option.

What is custody and what are the different types? Custody is the duty to care, supervise and for the welfare of a child (under 18). The court may award custody to one or both parents. There are two types of custody in Arizona. LEGAL CUSTODY: Legal custody refers to the right to make decisions for your child including the areas of religion, education, and healthcare. Some examples are deciding what school your child attends, whether your child has surgery, and what religion training you would like your child to receive. PHYSICAL CUSTODY: The term physical custody is used to refer to where the child resides most of the time. What is the difference between sole

custody and joint custody? Sole Legal Custody: One parent is responsible for making major decision for the child, mainly in the areas described above, religion, education, and healthcare. Both parents may discuss issues related to the child however the parent with sole legal custody has the authority to make the final decision if the parents cannot come to an agreement. Joint Legal Custody: Each parent has equal decision-making authority. This does not necessarily mean that the parents also share joint physical

Joint Physical Custody: This occurs when the court splits the contact with the parents in a way that allows the child to live with each parent an equal amount of time (example one week with one parent and one week with the other parent) This is not a good option if parents are unable to set aside their differences and may not be a good option for school-age children. If one parent has physical custody, the other parent has what is called visitation or parenting time. Joint Custody: This term could be used to refer to joint legal custody, joint physical custody, or both. Divorce is something that can be detrimental to all parties involved, especially children. So in cases where the marriage cannot be saved, both parents should put forth an effort to work together for the welfare of the child or children involved and God Willing it can be a less stressful process for everyone. The Importance of Duaa in All Matters Muslim Voice By Fathiyyah Bashshar Once Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), passed by a people who were suffering from some affliction. “Why don’t they make dua (prayer) to Allah for protection?” he said. With all the suffering and disasters Muslims are facing in various parts of the world, the question can be directed to all of us today.

sick, we know that we cannot find the right doctor without His Will; that the best doctor may not be able to diagnose our condition without His Command; that the best treatment plan will not succeed without His Permission. We make dua for all of these. We make dua before we seek medical help, while we are receiving it and after it has been delivered. The essence of worship Dua is the essence of ibadah. A person engaged in dua affirms his belief in Tawheed (monotheism) and shuns

that would follow the next day. In the decisive battles against the crusaders, Sultan Salatuddin Ayyubi was busy day and night. His days were devoted to Jihad. His nights were spent making dua, crying, seeking Allah’s help. This has been the practice of all true mujahedeen. Big and small We should make it a point to make dua for all things big and small. It is the beginning of wisdom to realize that big and small are arbitrary labels that are totally irrelevant in this context.

It is not that we have forgotten dua completely; we refer to it regularly. But our ideas and practice regarding dua have become distorted. Often it is reduced to the level of a ritual. Generally it is considered when all our efforts have failed --- an act of last resort. It is belittled through actions and sometimes even with words. Is it any wonder that today mostly a mention of dua is meant to indicate the hopelessness of a situation?

to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it. (Tirmidhi) Hadith Qudsi 35: On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah ( PBUH) stated: Our Lord (glorified and exalted be He) descends each night to the earth’s sky when there remains the final third of the night, and He says: Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him? (Bukhari) On the other hand, a prayer lacking concentration and conviction is no prayer at all. All times and all needs We should make dua at all times, not only during times of distress. The Prophet Muhammad said: (PBUH) “Whosoever desires that Allah answers his duas in unfavorable and difficult conditions, he should make plentiful dua in days of ease and comfort.” Also he said: “The person who does not ask from Allah, Allah becomes angry with him.”

What a tragedy, for dua is the most potent weapon of a believer. It can change fate, while no action of ours ever can. It is the essence of ibadah or worship. With it we can never fail; without it we can never succeed. In the proper scheme of things, dua should be the first and the last resort of the believer, with all his plans and actions coming in between. The most empowering conversation Dua is conversation with Allah, our Creator, our Lord and Master, the All Knowing, the All Powerful. This act in itself is of extraordinary significance. It is the most uplifting, liberating, empowering, and transforming conversation a person can ever have. We turn to Him because we know that He alone can lift our sufferings and solve our problems. We feel relieved after describing our difficulties to our Creator. We feel empowered after having communicated with the All Mighty. We sense His mercy all around us after talking to the Most Merciful. We get a new commitment to follow His path for that is the only path for success. We feel blessed with each such commitment.

belief in all false gods. With each dua his belief in Allah grows. He beseeches Him, affirming his own powerlessness. A person seriously and sincerely engaged in dua understands exactly the relationship between himself and the Creator and affirms it through his actions. That is the essence of worship! Additionally, such a person can never become arrogant or proud, a logical result of true worship.

Our first and last action

Our most potent weapon

In every difficulty our first action is dua, as is our last. We ask Allah to show us the way to handle that difficulty; we seek His help in following the path He shows to us; we seek His aid in making our efforts successful. When we fall

Dua is our most potent weapon in all struggles of life as well as in jihad in the battlefield. During the battle of Badr, the Prophet Muhammad stood up all night in prayer seeking Allah’s help in the battle between unequal armies

Nothing is too big for whom we are asking from; nothing is too small for the one who is asking. We should ask as a beggar, as a destitute person, for that is what we in reality are in relationship to Allah. At the same time we should ask with great hope and conviction that we shall be granted our prayers. We should remember the Hadith: “There is nothing more dear to Allah than a servant making dua to Him.” Hadith Qudsi 34: On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ( PBUH) Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you

We should ask for all of our needs: those related to this world as well as those related to the Hereafter. Those who only concentrate on the former are, in effect, announcing that they don’t care for their life in the permanent abode. They should blame nobody but themselves for the total ruin in that world that Qur’an assures us awaits them. Those who only concentrate on the later are also showing lack of balance, for we need Allah’s help to lead a good life here as well. Conclusion: All people We should make dua not only for ourselves but also for our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses and children, relatives and friends, teachers and other benefactors, and destitute and struggling Muslims everywhere. We should pray for them for the good in this world as well as in the Hereafter. The Prophet said: (PBUH) “The dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted. An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother the appointed angel says, ‘Aameen. And may you also be blessed with the same.’” [Sahih Muslim]
