Getting Health Insurance for Your Family and the Promise of The Affordable Care Act The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ACA, passed Congress in March 2010. The ACA changed many of the rules for people applying for health insurance. For example, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions, or impose lifetime caps on coverage for people with chronic health conditions, like asthma or cancer. ACA has allowed organizations like ours to make it easier for families to apply for and secure health insurance. While many individuals we help have insurance coverage already, our staff is able to help people find other options for insurance through the Healthcare Exchanges, also known as the Marketplace. Some families have been surprised to learn that they qualify for state-sponsored Medicaid or less expensive private plans in the Marketplace. Many other individuals have been able to gain insurance coverage for the first time in their lives.

APCA has been privileged to work directly with individuals and families in Pan-ethnic and South Asian communities. Specifically, we are able to p r o v i d e language assistance in diverse A s i a n languages. Our volunteer p r o g r a m and social enterprise c o n s i s t of a local workforce of individuals, staff and volunteers with expertise in over 40 languages like Hindi, Gujarati, Bangla, Punjabi, Arabic, Somali, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc. At least ten of our partners are also co-staff at APCA and have assisted over 300 individuals and families with language competent information and enrollment assistance. We are trained to provide helpful information to ensure that all people benefit from the Affordable Care Act’s promise to

cover every person. Currently, APCA is part of AIM for Equity, a nation-wide network of advocates working across the nation in communities like P h o e n i x and Tucson Arizona to ensure that all people regardless of any language, c u l t u r e , immigration status, legal status, age, or family make-up receive the full benefit of the Affordable Care Act as it was designed to provide. Join us! Spread the word by letting people know that March 31st coverage this year; contact our staff for an appointment to get more information about insurance coverage, or volunteer with APCA and assist your community in finding high quality affordable health care in Arizona.

Webb’s Synagogue Sermon Unites Faiths A leading American Muslim imam has delivered a special unprecedented sermon last Friday, after addressing more than 1000 people from different faiths at New England’s largest synagogue. “We have to be able to take each other as brothers and sisters,” imam Suhaib Webb, imam of the biggest mosque in New England and guest speaker at Temple Israel’s annual Shabbat Tzedek (Sabbath of Justice), said in his sermon, The Boston Globe reported. “We have to learn to forgive each other, and we have to learn to not believe the things we are told about each other before we sit and face each other, and get to know each other, and hug each other, and love each other, and cry together, and share together.” Webb, the first imam to formally speak at Temple Israel, which was founded in 1854, was speaking during the event held to honor the life and vision of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The speech was anticipate to end past tensions between Muslims and Jews in Boston, promoting interfaith work between Muslim, Jewish, and Christian leaders over the past years. Relations between the communities have been slightly affected in the last decade during the construction of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury, which critics charged was backed by extremists. “I look at this as an initial opportunity that opens the doors to further exploration, that points toward deeper understanding, trust, and relationship,” Rabbi Ronne Friedman, Temple Israel’s senior rabbi, told Boston Globe after the service. Webb said the communities need to begin to build “a relationship based on, ‘Hey, I know these people.’ ”

During Friday’s event, the vast sanctuary was packed with an extraordinary diverse congregation. There were men in yarmulkes, women wearing headscarves, some in suits and dresses, and

others in jeans. “What’s historic about this is it signals a new era in terms of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim communities” working together, Rev. Gloria White-Hammond of Bethel AME Church in Jamaica Plain, who offered a prayer at the service, said adding that over the last 15 to 20 years, the city has seen great collaboration between Christians and Jews. “Clearly, we have the right people, here at the right time, and a great sense of collaboration,” she added. Building Trust Imam Webb was at the center of interest during Friday’s event, widely praised as having a keen interest in building interfaith relationships. Working with Yusufi Vali, who served as a community organizer for the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization before he became the mosque’s executive director, Webb has offered Christian and Jewish leaders an access point to Boston’s Muslim community.

“We see with Imam Webb and Yusufi’s presence over the last two years at the mosque a real attempt and desire to engage significantly, not only to build, but also to connect,” Rabbi Friedman said. “They are really interested in creating an authentic . . . progressive tradition of A m e r i c a n Islam. That really means connecting to other faith groups in the community and to other civic organizations and institutions in the community.” The Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd III, rector of Trinity Church, said that in crisis moments — the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, or the Marathon bombings, for example — “many of us do the right thing. “But to work at this ongoing relationship-building, and in this case, to have that wonderful Jewish community listen to the

imam respectfully speak in their holy place — that is a really big deal,” he said. “When the imam, the major leader of the Muslim community, steps into the pulpit of, of all things, the key temple of the city, that is a momentous moment.” Rabbi Matthew V. Soffer of Temple Israel, who specializes in work with people in their 20s and 30s, was also working with Vali to plan an occasion to bring younger generations from different faiths together. “We have both anticipated that this is not going to be a one-off gathering,” Soffer said. “The point of this is to really build a bridge and kick off something that is going to be lasting and enduring.” Attendants praised the event as building better relations inside the community. “I think we need to embrace and encourage it, so it can grow,” Sogol Javaheri of the Fenway, who attended with her 14-month-old daughter, Mariam, said of the new dynamic among the religious communities. “It’s up to us to make it happen.”

California Muslims Pray for Rain With arms up and eyes glued to the sky, Muslim residents of the San Gabriel Valley in California have resorted to Allah asking him for rain as unprecedented draught hits their west coast state. The special prayers are aimed at relieving “the ongoing drought impacting California residents and agriculture,” the group said in a news release cited by Los Angeles Times. “Islam’s Prophet Muhammad offered similar prayers during times of drought,” the release said, reciting some of the traditional supplications, including: “Oh God, give us a saving rain, good and productive, general and heavy, now and not later, beneficial and not harmful.” How to Offer Salatul-Istisqa’ Drought has severely hit California this year, spreading images of despair everywhere. A sense of dread is building among farmers, many of whom have let fields go fallow. Cattle ranchers have had to sell portions of their

herd for lack of water. Sacramento and municipalities have

other imposed

severe water restrictions. Wildfires broke out this week in forests that are usually too wet to ignite. The dread maximized after Colby fire erupted last Thursday, destroying 16 structures including five homes. Amid these images, the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for special prayers on Sunday, January 19, inviting all faiths.

The prayers for rain, called Salatul Istisqa, were held after Zuhr prayer, at 1:15 pm at the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley. S i m i l a r prayers were called earlier this month by Sacramento chapter of the Council on AmericanIslamic. “SalatulIstisqa’ is offered when s e e k i n g rain from Almighty Allah during times of drought. Little Relief Little relief was expected after forecasters announced that California braces for what could be an unprecedented winter fire season fueled by record dry conditions. On Friday, Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency and urged residents to cut water use by 20%. Downtown Los Angeles had its driest year on record in 2013. The National Weather Service last

week released a forecast for the southwestern United States calling for unseasonably dry and hot conditions. “It’s just explosive,” William Patzert, a climatologist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, said. “The grasses are just, they go up like a match. … Everything is good to go.” The United States is home to a Muslim minority of between six to eight million. A recent survey found that American Muslims are the most moderate around the world. It also showed that US Muslims generally express strong commitment to their faith and tend not to see an inherent conflict between being devout and living in a modern society. Last December, several Muslim groups across the US have launched special clothing drives to help the needy and homeless in different American states during the winter season. Their efforts were not limited to helping American needy and homeless only. Similar drives were launched to collect aid to Burma Muslims and Iraqi refugees.

Sorcery At Morocco’s Sufi Festival RABAT – Taking a journey into the supernatural world of genies, a growing number of Moroccans are visiting the festival of Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch where sorcery, hypnotic rhythms and un-Islamic superstitions mix with Sufi practices. “We come here to be purified of the evil spirits, of the ‘jinn,’” Madame Khayat, from the city of Fez, told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Monday, January 27. “It’s a kind of pilgrimage if you like. People go to Mecca to be purified of their sins. People come here to be purified of evil spirits.” Khayat comes every year to the festival, despite the disapproval of many Moroccans, including her husband, who view the rituals as un-Islamic. The week-long festival Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch is held annually in Mghrassyine area, 15 kilometers from Meknes city in northern Morocco. It brings Moroccans from far and wide to venerate a 17th century Muslim saint and his servant Lalla Aicha, a mythical Muslim

princess from the desert who dwells in the spirit world and is a powerful unseen force for her followers. Making their annual pilgrimage to the shrine, visitors practice sorcery, plate-smashing and animal sacrifices which are often associated with Sufi festivals. Those visitors usually demand spiritual guidance and divine blessing. Sometimes they come seeking higher states of consciousness through music and dance, as a form of communion with God. They usually light candles and burn incense in the cave of Lalla Aicha, calling on the so-called queen of the genies to intercede on their behalf. Others slaughter sheep and chicken as a form of sacrifice at the shrine. Though these practices were seen as un-Islamic, a growing number of visitors attend the event annually. “There are many people who think it’s savagery, who don’t believe in this. Even my husband

doesn’t like me to come here,” Khayat said with a laugh. “So when he wasn’t looking, I just got in the car and came with my two maids.” Empowered Sufism The increasing trend of Sufism was seen as being empowered by King Mohamed VI who allowed a clear revival of mystical approach of Islam. “The political role of this new policy of favoring Sufism as a moderate, open, tolerant form of Islam is a means of confronting extremism,” Aziz Hlaoua, a Moroccan sociologist, told AFP. The trend was empowered after the king appointed Ahmed Toufiq, known for his Sufi sympathies, as minister of religious affairs, to pioneer this revival and reverse the marginalization of Sufi fraternities under his father, the late king Hassan II. “And the moussem have seen a continuous comeback since Ahmed Toufiq’s appointment as minister,” Hlaoua said. A study published in 2012 by the Pew Research Centre, a US think

tank, showed that an estimated 86 percent of Moroccans believe in these supernatural beings, more than any of the other countries surveyed. Tasawuf (sufism) is a subject of the greatest dispute and debate among Muslims. Many Muslim scholars went to the extreme in denouncing it to the extent that they considered it as bid’ah (unauthentic acts of worship), which were not in Quran or Sunnah or the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). On the other hand, a large number of renowned scholars defended tasawuf and considered it as one of the important disciplines of Islamic teachings. A Muslim should maintain sound faith in Allah Almighty. It is Allah Almighty alone Who could benefit or harm people. Any human, dead or alive, doesn’t have the authority to benefit or harm his own self, let alone others.

Billboards Raise Islam Awareness in US MICHIGAN – A new billboard campaign has been launched in Michigan to present the true message of Islam and to support stronger interfaith relations in the US. “We want to make sure that we work on the commonalities that there may be between Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and other faiths,” Dr. Sabeel Ahmed, the director of the Gain Peace campaign, told Public News Service on Tuesday, January 28. “If they are activists in the church or in the synagogue, we would like to work with them for the betterment of the society.” US Muslims Campaign Fights Islamophobia ‘Jesus: Prophet of Islam’ Irks Christians ‘Why Islam’ Reaches Florida Gain Peace is a national organization supported by the Islamic Circle of North America. Launching the new campaign, the organization aims to reach Michigan residents through billboards, newspapers, television, and radio ads. Gain peace campaign aims to reach Michigan residents through

its multimedia campaign that will include disseminating Islam message through billboards, newspapers, Television, and Radio ads. The billboard includes two questions; “What Is Islam?” and “What Are The Muslims?” It also includes a phone number for those interested in getting more information about Islam as well as a free copy of the Noble Qur’an. Prompted by the increasing Islamophopia after 9/11, the campaign aims to defy misconceptions about Islam in a state that has one of the largest Muslim populations in US. Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to an estimated Muslim minority of six to eight million. An earlier Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans Muslims are loyal to their country and optimistic about their future in the United States. Another US survey has revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith. No Proselytizing The campaign directors have

Achieving 30% growth in its first year, “Simply Zeena” has gained enough profits to release new collection every season. “Our goal is to be making much more than what we’re making now, but we’re self-sustaining and we’re profitable,” Jondy said. Halal Market Presenting a global thriving industry, halal market has been attracting many of the American entrepreneurs in the recent years. “The whole idea of halal is growing even beyond the Muslim realm,” Sameer Sarmast, who blogs and films a Web series about halal restaurants, said. “I feel like it’s just going to get bigger and bigger. “You mention food to anybody, food is a common denominator it will bring people together,” Sarmast, who has been tracking halal restaurants across the states, added. For Adnan Durrani, CEO of Saffron Road, halal markets offered Muslims a chance to defy

misconceptions surrounding post 9/11 Islam. “I started thinking of ways to create a business model that was socially responsible,” said Durrani. “That could reflect the values that I felt were important to me in my faith, and not what I was seeing in the media,” he added. Being one of the well-known halal food brands in US, Saffron Road produces halal, organic and NonGenetically modified food. The concept of halal, -- meaning permissible in Arabic -- has traditionally been applied to food. Muslims should only eat meat from livestock slaughtered by a sharp knife from their necks, and the name of Allah, the Arabic word for God, must be mentioned. Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to an estimated Muslim minority of six to eight million. According to a study by Ogilvy Noor marketing firm in 2010, the American Muslim consumer market was worth $170 billion.

Thousands Embrace Islam In Emirates More than two thousand people of different nationalities have reverted to Islam in Emirates in 2013, reflecting a growing preference for the religion around the globe.. “The new Muslims are originally from the Philippines, China, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cameron, Kenya, Nigeria, USA, Italy, Germany, Britain, Ireland, Australia, Myanmar, Syria, Jordan, as well as Latin America,” Rashid Aljunaibi, the Director of Dar Al Ber Society centre, told Khaleej Times on Monday, January 27. According to Dar Al Ber Society, about 2,115 people reverted to Islam in 2013. The number, compared to about 1,907 in 2012, showed an increase by about 10%, according to Aljunaibi. The number was much less in 2011 as only 1,380 were reportedly converted to Islam, while 1,500 joined Islam in 2010 and about 1,059 in 2009. Reverts are usually drawn to Islam by its merciful and rational teachings which promote equality among all human beings.

Aiming to woo non-Muslims, Dar Al Ber centre engaged in several activities to present the true-

face Islam. “The centre distributed up to 56,215 books, brochures, CDs, and cassettes about Islam translated in several languages; English, Tagalog, Indian, and Chinese last year.” Aljunaibi said. In a bid to reassure the newly converts, Aljunaibi said that: “A unified certificate is now issued to authenticate a new Muslim’s identity in association with the Dubai Courts, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.”

Imam’s Son Shot Dead in New Jersey

NEWARK – The eldest son of a Muslim imam in New Jersey has been killed in the city park after an unidentified attacker opened fire on his vehicle, killing the imam’s son, an unidentified woman and injuring three more. “There’s a war in our city and the good guys are losing,” North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos, one of four candidates running for mayor this year, told New Jersey’s NJ.com on Tuesday, January 21. “When street thugs can carry out a brazen attack in the middle of the day at a busy intersection in the heart of the Central Ward, it tells me that the city must immediately change direction from the status quo.” The attack occurred on Tuesday when neighbors heard as many as 15 shots while walking near the intersection of Springfield and Fairmount avenues in Newark. People, indentified as relatives of the deceased were seen sobbing in the park near the crime scene. The victim was identified as Akbar Muhammad, the oldest son of Imam Abdul Akbar Muhammad of Masjid Imam Ali K. Muslim Mosque in Newark who was sitting in the driver’s seat. Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio added that an unidentified woman was also killed in what he termed as “targeted” attack. “It’s a terrible thing, especially if you have only one person in that vehicle who is the target, and you have such a

disregard for life that four other people are murdered or injured,” Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. Respectful Man According to the victim’s friends, Muhammad was in his early 30s, and is survived by his parents and six siblings. “He was a very popular and well-liked young man, always respectful anytime that I saw him, and my heart grieves for his mother, father and his brothers and sisters,” said Amin Nathari, a longtime Muslim community activist and friend of the Muhammad family. Nathari has also described the elder Muhammad as one of the most respected imams in the city. Newark recorded 111 homicides in 2013, making it the city’s deadliest year since 1990. Tuesday’s shooting sparked emotional reactions from several city leaders who saw it as a continuation of the crime surge. “I don’t have any words. I really don’t have any words,” West Ward Councilman Ronald Rice Jr. said. “What I will say is that the mayor and the council, on some level, we need to call a real citywide confab about this as soon as possible,” he said. “It’s beyond a public safety issue at this point. … It’s out of control.” The United States is home to a Muslim minority of between six to eight million.

Established more than 20 years ago, Dar Al Ber Society centre has witnessed the reversion of 20,000 from 200 different nationalities to Islam. Qur`an Park In another project in Dubai, the w e a l t h y emirate has announced plans for the world’s first Qur’an park which will display 51 out of the 54 plants mentioned in Qur’an. “We have already planted 31 types of plants during the second phase of the project’s construction, and have 20 more left,” Mohammad Mashroom, Director of General Projects Department, told Gulf News. “The only three plants we have not planted are not available on Earth. “We will construct an observatory where a glass building will accommodate 15

plants and other flowers, which will open up the minds of visitors to have a better understanding of the Qur’an,” he saddedaid. Planned to open in 2015, the Qur’an park will include garlic, onion, lentil, barley, wheat, ginger, pumpkin, watermelon, and tamarind along with other plants. With total coast of Dh26 million ($7 million), the park, located in Al Khawaneej, will include children’s play area, outdoor theatre, desert garden, palm oasis, and a lake, in addition to running and cycling tracks. “The area allocated for the miracles of Qur’an will include an air-conditioned tunnel, which will reflect and explain the miracles and stories from the holy book,” Mashroom explained. The project is in its third and final stage so far. “The total area is 64 hectares and in the next six months we will focus our efforts on completing the remaining 32 hectares and complete the other facilities,” said Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality.

“101 Reasons Why I’m Glad I Wear Hijab” Interview with the Author

teaching, I started a clothing retail and design company with my friend called Rebirth of Chic. We wanted to provide women with clothing that was totally modest, yet artsy and fashionable. Even though this aim was important to me, what I did with my photography meant even more to me. I wanted to put out images of women who were modestly and Islamically dressed (not tight, see through, shows the shape, with hijab), yet were captivatingly beautiful, but not sexy. I wanted to show my fellow women you can find that beauty and elegance in yourself without having to be sexy and physically alluring. At the same time I delved deeper into my Islamic studies and taught and wrote. I hope to publish some of my writings soon. 2) Tell us about the book, “101 Reasons Why I’m Glad I Wear Hijab” Ms Ebrahim: 101 Reasons Why I’m Glad I Wear Hijab, is a funny and refreshing look at what is often a serious, controversial, and misunderstood topic. Full of laughs and insight, it whisks the reader into the experience and life-view of this American Muslim author, and gives an understanding as to why so many women choose to wear hijab, even against odds like bans, family’s disapproval, and sometimes societal condemnation. It is a fully illustrated, 80page hardcover, coffee table book packed with 101 comic illustrations. Not just a onetime read, this book is one of those “conversational pieces” you leave on your coffee table, shelf, or open library to initiate a conversation in a social setting. It’s a book you can share at your college or reading circles and have a discussion. It’s a book you’ll want to buy and donate to your local library to finally be a voice that shows the positive things about hijab women feel, instead of all of the countless silencing voices of women and Saudi princesses who run away from Islam, Muslims, and Islamic traditions only to be “liberated” by the West. These are true stories, but where is our story? Muslim women who chose to wear hijab rarely have one. In the face of punitive comments by people like Ann Coulter, we rarely have a chance to talk back. So here are my reasons, not one,

not two, but Ha! 101 Reasons! “101 Reasons Why I’m Glad I Wear Hijab” is a fun, introspective, and creative book. Sometimes silly. When I first started wearing hijab I started noticing all sorts of benefits, and “Cool, Alhamdulillah!” things about wearing hijab. So many things I didn’t expect.

know that everything will come into fruition when it’s appointed time comes. 3) What was the motivation behind the book? Ms Ebrahim: It started out as funny things I jotted down, and grew into “How many ‘silver linings’ can I come up with?” I know Allah has good reasons to

So I started writing them down; this was back in 1998, the end of my college career. It was a project I was always passionate about but never got around to finish. I had most of the reasons, about 75, in the first few years; and completed more than 101 reasons in 2009, when I picked it up again. I was so busy with my kids, work, and life that I had it on hold for a long time. From 2009 to now I went through fi n d i n g illustrators, trying to do the publishing process on my own, and going back and forth with the illustrators, and editing. Finally I gave up and hired a publisher to help me wrap it up! Overall, I learned not to give up, to be patient, and

prescribe the hijab, and I, myself, felt so many positive benefits; so why not share them with others? A third impetus might be that I know so many people want to ask me, “Why would you choose to wear that, honey? Don’t you know you are free here?” Or some Muslims might want to ask me, “Why would you choose to wear that, Sister? Don’t you know we are free here?” So, this is my chance to share my response!

4) What has the response been, thus far? Ms Ebrahim: A lot of people are excited and eager to read it. I get a lot of laughs from women who wear hijab, when I’ve read it to them. I hear a lot of “Oh my God, that’s so true!” and snickers. I know some of my reasons, some people won’t get unless they’ve been totally immersed into the American Culture as I have. Some of them are just for fun. Even a lot of my friends and family who don’t wear hijab “get” a lot of the reasons and laugh. And finally, my non-Muslim friends find it eye opening and amusing, and definitely intriguing. 5) If you could give one piece of advice to someone struggling with hijab, what would it be? Ms Ebrahim: Be positive. If you think everyone is looking at you or hates you, they will. If you be yourself, be friendly and helpful, and a follower of the Prophet Muhammad’s persona and example, everyone will like you whether they want to or not. When I talk to people, people who I can feel have a preconceived notion about me, I can feel their image of me (as well as the hijab on my head) dissolve before my eyes. Know you have a lot to offer the world, walk proudly, and people will respect you. Finally, if you wear the hijab (or do anything) with the intention of pleasing and following God’s guidance, Allah will give you your due reward and put barakah in your life.

Muslim Foster Families Urged in Sweden STOCKHOLM – Swedish Muslims have been encouraged to register as foster families in the Nordic country, in order to avoid placing young Muslim children with nonMuslim families in custody cases. “We hope more Muslim families come to the fore and register so when there are cases where Muslim children are forced to be put into the state’s custody, they have a proper place to live,” Yasri Khan, the president of the Federation of Swedish Muslims for Peace and Justice, told Astro Awani on Monday, January 27. “This is important because these children need to be in a home that is halal compliant,” he added. The call for handing Muslim children to Muslim foster families was prompted by increasing number of Muslim children who were fostered by non-Muslim families after their parents were held in custody. The detention has sparked anger among the Muslim community in Sweden and in Malaysia where a campaign was launched to release the couples using the hatshtag

#SwedenLetThemGo. Calls increased after a Malaysian Muslim couple was detained last month without trial for smacking their kid for not praying. As a result, their four children

were handed to non-Muslim Swedish family, sparking angry reactions from the Malaysian government. The call was echoed by the Federation of Swedish Muslims for Peace and Justice, which is leading an awareness campaign to encourage Muslim couples to register their names as foster families. It was first made during a seminar organized last Sunday at the Fittya Mosque in Stockholm by the Federation of Swedish Muslims.

Pressure Swedish Muslim community has made similar calls to Swedish authorities to recognize more Muslims as potential foster families to accommodate the soaring number of Muslims in Sweden. Members of the Federations of Swedish Muslims have pointed to the relative shortage in the number of Muslim families compared with the number of children who are victims of custody cases. “According to the European convention and the child convention that Sweden is a signatory of, this is already Swedish law,” said Khan’s wife, Kawtar Chibli, an officer with the Stockholm Child Protection Services. “But the state is not doing enough.” Joining hands with Sweden’s Muslim community, the Malaysian Umno Youth mission, which visits Stockholm to oversee the issue of the detained couples, have attended Sunday’s seminar to offer support. Muslims make up between 450,000 and 500,000 of Sweden’s nine million people, according to the US State Department report in 2011.

Berlin Names First Muslim Spokeswoman BERLIN – A German Muslim young woman has made history after being hired as the first Muslim deputy spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry in the West European country. “You might not see it from my appearance, as I don‘t wear a head scarf,” Sawsan Chebli, deputy spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) last weekend in Berlin. “But I do pray. I do fast. I don‘t eat pork and I don‘t drink alcohol,” added Chebli who describes herself as a pious Muslim. Chebli, 35, a German Muslim of Palestinian origin, was hired last week by FrankWalter Steinmeier, the new foreign minister, as a deputy spokesperson for chief spokesman Martin Schaefer. Breaking the German Foreign Ministry’s decades-long tradition, Chebli’s appointment has set aside the rules that underscore spokespersons’ career experience in diplomacy and aristocratic surnames. The Muslim diplomat held previous

the state government of Berlin. Born in Berlin, Chebli, whose parents moved to Germany in the 1970s,

Chebli, who has a political sciences degree, has worked for six years at the parliament of Germany

(Bundestag). Welcoming her new post as the first Muslim deputy spokesperson, Chebli said, “I hope that someday, that religion or ethnicity will be not in the foreground and will be perceived as normal.” Last September, a Turkish-born German woman made history in German election, becoming the first ever Muslim lawmaker in the Bundestag. Germany has Europe’s secondbiggest Muslim population after France, and Islam comes third in Germany after Protestant and Catholic Christianity. It has between 3.8 and 4.3 million Muslims, making up some 5 percent of the total 82 million population, according to government-commissioned studies. Germans have grown hostile to the Muslim presence recently, with a heated debate on the Muslim immigration into the country. A recent poll by the Munster University found that Germans view Muslims more negatively than their European neighbors.

Afghan Makes Prayers Record in Madinah

CAIRO – Preserving his position at the first row during prayers at the Prophet’s mosque in Madinah for years, an Afghani Muslim has never missed a prayer over more than a quarter of a century, impressing the holy city’s visitors. “I’ve always made sure I perform all prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque since I was a young man,” Haji Muhammad, who never missed a prayer at the prophet’s mosque, told the Saudi Gazette on Tuesday, January 21. Captured by the Saudi TV during all the prayers at the Prophet’s mosque (peace be upon him) for dozens of years, Hajj Muhammed gained popularity among Madinah visitors with his black turban. Muahmmed has also kept his position on the right side of the first row during all the prayers. “I love picking up the copies of the Holy Qur’an from visitors and putting them back in their cabinets,” Hajj Muhammed said. At the age of 19, the devoted Afghani has traveled to work in Makkah where he had been as a plumber for

37 years. Hajj Mushammed’s precipitance and obligation has impressed worshippers who have seen him praying at the same spot for years. After moving to the Saudi Kingdom, Muhammed made an agreement with his sponsor that ensures his rights to attend the five prayers at the mosque. “When I worked for my sponsor, I told him from the start that I didn’t want to miss any prayer at the mosque and that in Ramadan I won’t work because I’ll be in the mosque all the time,” the elderly man, who has two wives and 12 children, added. Prophet Muhammad’s mosque was first built in 622 CE, after Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) immigrated to Madinah to build a mosque next to his house. At the Prophet’s time, the mosque had an extensive role since it stood as the center of the city community. It was also considered a religious school and a court.

Hijab Project: Sharing Veil Experiences CAIRO – Aiming to defy misconceptions surrounding hijab, a US Muslim teen has launched a social experiment project in which Muslim and non-Muslim women were invited to try hijab in public places and share their experience. “The Hijab Project is a social experiment that I’d like girls—both Muslim and non-Muslim—to begin,” Amara Majeed, the founder of the project, wrote on The Hijab Project website. “Try on your own headscarf to school, the mall or other public place, and observe the reactions that people give you. Are you looked at differently? “Do people treat you differently? Then, share your experience here! If you currently wear a hijab, tell us your hijab story,” Majeed wrote. Being a Muslim living in the states, 16-year-old Majeed started project in a bid to bridge the gap between Islam and other faiths and convey the true-message of modesty behind hijab. “A bridge of understanding needs to be built between Muslims and nonMuslims,” she wrote. “And experiencing the lifestyle of a growing and often misunderstood culture in America is vital to shedding the lack of knowledge that many people have regarding Islam as a religion,” she added. The project invites women to share their experience with hijab at the website, The Hijab Project, aiming to underscore hijab as a women choice and highlight the prestigious status granted to women in Islam. “Often times, people think that Muslim women are forced into wearing hijab by male relatives. In Islam, everything is based on intention,” Majeed wrote. Launched last December, the project has achieved a global progress, reaching hundreds of women across the globe, according to Majeed. Islam sees hijab as an obligatory code of dress, not a religious symbol displaying one’s affiliations. The status of women in Islam is often the target of attacks in the secular media, with many citing the Islamic dress as an example of the “subjugation” of women under Islamic law. Yet, the truth is that 1400 years ago, Islam recognized women’s rights in a way that grants them the utmost protection and respect as well, a combination other systems fail to offer. Islam granted them freedom of expression, political participation, business and financial rights, and asked the rest of society to hold them in high esteem and offer them due

student said that wearing hijab made her feel protected, granting her a different image about Islam. “Initially, I found wearing a Hijab somewhat uncomfortable – I had wrapped it too tight, and my peripheral vision was covered,” the girl, who posted her photo in hijab without a name wrote on the project’s website. “But as the week continued, I found wearing the Hijab gave a sense of protection, as well as warmth,” she added. “These past few days have given me a different view of Islam, and especially in a society which I find often condemns Islamic practices, I know I will be a sure advocate for social acceptance and awareness.” Sharing her experience as a veiled woman, a 20-year-old website visitor said: “Where are the most precious pearls found- under the sea, hidden. Gold? Deep in mines.” “The best of things are hidden, so protect yourself,” the young woman added. A Muslim college student shared her story about being reluctant to wear hijab. Trying it for the first time, the Muslim girl said: “I had forgotten to take it off, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world to be wearing it.” Posting her experience, the girl added: “Wearing the hijab made me feel like at last, I was free from

“I wore the hijab for myself and Allah, not for other people.”

Another Muslim girl wrote about her experience with hijab, which she was forced to wear since she was ten. At the first day of college, she decided to disobey her family and take off hijab. “I took off my hijab, and went to my first class with my carefully curled hair flying in the wind,” she said. Yet, after taking off her hijab she was disappointed and felt devastated. “People walked by me just like they normally did, and no one was extra friendly or overly nice to me. I sat in the back row, feeling devastated. “I felt horrible inside, wishing I could run to the bathroom and cover my hair. Even though there were guys everywhere, I didn’t get the attention I had originally hoped for.” The experience made her realize the true meaning of hijab, taking a final decision to wear it. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of participants are expected to mark the second World Hijab day next February 1. The event, held for the second consecutive year, was first suggested by New York woman Nazma Khan to encourage non-Muslim women to don the hijab and experience it.

India Muslims Deplore False Terror Arrests “We are planning to organize protest marches and demonstrations all over the state against police action.” Earlier this week, Mufti Abdul Razzaq led a delegation that submitted a memorandum to the State Governor Ram Naresh Yadav. The memorandum demanded immediate release of young Muslims arrested on false terror charges in the state. It has already been established that the police in different Indian states for years have been targeting young Muslims by labeling them as being involved in terrorism. Reports from different states show that many youths were arrested only because they belong to a particular community and charged with sedition and terrorism. “You cannot arrest anyone just because he is following a particular religion. Almost all state governments are least bothered to care about the problem the Muslims face,” said Mufti Abdul Razzaq. “It is easy for the police to accuse any youth as member of banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and arrest him.” Almost all Muslims in the area opine that those arrested were framed wrongly by AntiTerrorism Squad (ATS) without any reason. “He was sitting inside the house, when the police came and took him,” Abdul Khaleeq, father of one of the accused person Adil Nagori, told OnIslam.net. “Later police claimed to have recovered a bomb from him. I know my son. How can you arrest someone like this just because he is a Muslim?” Aslam Siddiqui, a resident of Khandwa, a city often dubbed as hotbed of SIMI by the state police, shared a similar opinion. “The government and the police concoct baseless allegations against innocent youths and implicate them,” Siddiqui said. “I think Muslim youths do not feel secure now because of these incidents.” Insecurity Demanding an enquiry on the arrests by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier investigating agency, Muslim scholars in the city of Ujjain accused the ATS of falsely implicating Muslim youths in the name of their involvement

in terrorist acts. “We still want the state government to order an enquiry by CBI so that innocent youths should get justice and we are

opposed to the arrests in such a manner,” Shehr Qazi (City head of Ujjain) told Onislam.net. “If they are involved then they must be punished, but arresting anyone is against the law of the land.” In most cases all over the country, Muslim youths arrested have been acquitted later by courts. Muslims have been arrested in states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and other places by the police on false charges. Aquil Ahmed, a lawyer who had fought cases of youths implicated in terror charges, said, “We have seen that in a number of cases youths have been acquitted of terror charges and the court has rapped the police.” “It is really difficult for a youth to lead a normal life because of the terrorist tag,” he told OnIslam.net. “I think the government should understand the fact that they make life very difficult for a Muslim youth after he is arrested on false charges,” he added. Last year, Union Home Minister Sushil kumar Shinde wrote a letter to Chief Ministers of all states, asking them to ensure that no innocent Muslim is wrongly detained and charged with terror cases. Yet, the arrests continued all over the country. Last year, a Delhi-based civil and democratic rights group

A report prepared by Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association (JTSA) titled ‘Guilt by Association: UAPA cases in Madhya Pradesh’ documents the large number of cases registered under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)

across the state between 2001 and 2012. The report claimed that there are scores of ‘terror’ cases, which have resulted in the incarceration of hundreds of men, mostly on the basis of alleged ‘seized literature’. Despite the fact that there have been no incidents of terror attacks in the state, the number of cases in which the accused were charged with furthering the activities of an unlawful association under UAPA is relatively high. These cases, according to the report, were registered against Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) members, their friends and acquaintances. Talking to OnIslam.net, Rahil Khan, a student of a madarsa situated in Tajul Masajid mosque, said, “If there is any terror activity in the country, then we Muslim youths have to prove our innocence.” “This is something which is creating a sense of insecurity among us.”

The Signs of the Day of Judgment By Lolita V Jefferson Ed.D Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, to Him belong the endowments and proper commendations. May Allah raise the rank of our Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam and his kind and Companions and protect his nation from what he fears for it. Thereafter, Allah said in Surat Ghafir, Ayah 59: “The hour will certainly come. There is no doubt – Yet most men believe not.” Allah the Exalted created the worlds. He has created earth as our temporary living place. Earth is merely a passage way to the hereafter and not a permanent (everlasting) living place. The Qur’an informs, that nothing in this life is eternal, everything we see will eventually perish, taking with it life on earth. Undeniably, life on earth is constantly interchanging. This is evident in our daily circumstances and in the nature of the land we live on. Since the beginning of human life on earth, people die while others are born every day. This will continue until a time when every one will die including Humans, Jinn and animals. This will be the end of life on earth; when Angel Israfil will blow the horn before his life is taken. The time of that day is unknown to all

creation. We know from the Qur’an, that Allah the Exalted has concealed this knowledge from the highest ranking angels and the best creations, the prophets and messengers. Allah said in Surat al-Araf, Ayah 187: “They ask you <Muhammad> about the final hour, when will be it’s appointed time? Say the knowledge thereof is with my Lord alone. None but He can reveal as to when it will be.” This is a brief summary of the signs; there are many books, articles, and cassettes etc., which discuss these in greater detail. May Allah enable us to recognize and heed the Signs, and strengthen us in the times of tribulation. The Signs are listed in roughly chronological order, although the order is not necessarily precise, especially for those in the future. “Are they waiting for anything except the Hour, to come to them suddenly? But its Signs have already come!” (AlQuran, Surah Muhammad)

A time of great peace and serenity during and after the remaining lifetime of Jesus. 37. Wealth will come so abundant that it will become difficult to find someone to accept charity. 38. Arabia will become a land of gardens and rivers. 39. Society will then decay. 40. The buttocks of the women of the tribe of Daws will again sway in circumambulation (tawaf) around the idol Dhul-Khulsah. 41. A great fire in the Hijaz, seen by the inhabitants of Busra. 42. Three major armies will sink into the earth: one in the east, one in the west, and one in Arabia. 43. An Abyssinian leader with thin shins will destroy the Ka’bah. 44. The huge cloud of smoke. 45. The sun will rise from the west (its place of setting). 46. A gentle wind, which will take the souls of the believers. 47. There is no-one left on the earth saying, “Allah, Allah” or “There is no god except Allah.” 48. Eventually the Day of Judgment is established upon the worst of the people, who copulate like donkeys in public. 49. The blowing in the Trumpet by the Angel Israfil, upon which everyone will faint except as Allah wills. 50. The second blowing in the Trumpet, upon which everyone will be resurrected. Although this article has listed only 50 of the signs, Allah knows best if there are more. We ask Allah in our Duaa for salvation on the Day of Judgment by reciting “Our Lord! Grant us what You promised unto us through Your messengers and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection, for You never break (Your) Promise.
