Los Angeles Celebrates US Muslim Heritage LOS ANGELES – Recognizing Muslim American community’s contributions and rich heritage, Los Angeles city council has declared July 2014 as Muslim American Heritage Month, a decision widely welcomed by the Muslim community. “It’s a very important resolution. It’s historic,” Najee Ali, the project’s founder, told KCET on Friday, June 20. “It will help bring Los Angeles Muslims closer to the mainstream and civic life and affairs of our city where we will have a chance every year to highlight the various cultural traditions of the Muslim community.” “We can share understanding for many of our fellow Angelenos who know very little of the Muslim community, except for what they see on TV and the media, which is mostly negative,” he added. The city council’s resolution to recognize July 2014 as Muslim American heritage month was adopted during a meeting last Wednesday. It followed months of cooperation between the city council and Project Islamic Hope, an LA-based civil rights activist group, to produce an initial draft with the resolution.

“Residents from my community approached me to commemorate the Muslim community and culture, and I felt it was only appropriate to celebrate this culture as we do dozens of others in our city,” Council member Curren D. Price, who introduced the resolution, said. “Our city’s diversity, and our acceptance and tolerance of our different beliefs, is part of what makes our city great.” The decision makes Los Angeles as the second American city to recognize a Muslim Heritage month, following Washington DC. The resolution notes that the celebration “will promote and encourage awareness of the significant contributions made by the city’s Muslim population in culture, social services, education, politics, business, technology, and the arts.” Diversity LA City Council’s decision was welcomed by America’s largest Muslim civil rights advocacy group which praised the resolution as a celebration of diversity. “We hope that this resolution will serve to expand the bridge between the Muslims of Los Angeles and the larger community by providing an

opportunity to learn of the numerous contributions that Muslim Angelenos have made to this great city in the past, as well the impact of their current efforts,” said Yasmin Nouh, LA’s communications coordinator of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The city council’s adoption of this resolution has also sparked an example for other institutions to potentially adopt similar resolutions, Nouh added. “In our current political sphere, it has unfortunately become acceptable to attack one’s political opponent on the basis of their relations with the Muslim community or incite fear of Muslims to garner support. “In passing the resolution, the LA City Council has implicitly made a statement rejecting such fear tactics, and set an example for all public officials and institutions to aspire to,” she added. California currently has the largest Muslim community in the US, with a majority residing in Southern California, according to USC’s Center for Religion and Civic Culture. The state is also home to the largest number of mosques in the US.

US Muslim Groups Drive for Better World A number of American Islamic and interfaith organizations have been included in a list published by Huffington Post as examples of how faith-based groups are doing good in the world today and how their belief is a major vehicle for service to the world and peace promotion. “Religion has made its way into many global conflicts, and there is no doubt that religion can be divisive and cause harm,” Huffington Post wrote on Tuesday, June 17. The paper added that “countless religious groups, congregations and individuals around the world offer daily demonstrations that faith can offer deep spiritual wisdom, be a major vehicle for service to the world and promote peace.” Putting those names in a list of 100 groups, the paper included some of the major US Islamic organization in recognition of their efforts in the American community. The list recognized the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) over its role in “combating stereotypes about Islam to promote equality”. “CAIR was founded to combat stereotypes about Islam and Muslims through education and anti-terrorism activism,” Huff Post said. “As part of an initiative to raise awareness about discrimination and help American Muslims advocate for themselves, CAIR printed a pocket-sized ‘know your rights and responsibilities’ guide for those who might be subject to discrimination,”
the paper added. Another leading American group, The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) was included for advocating for Muslim voices in the public sphere. “MPAC works to promote civil rights for Muslims and the integration of Islam into American pluralism,” the paper said. “One example of this is the Council’s Hollywood Bureau which works with the entertainment industry to ensure fair representation of Muslims in media and help Muslim filmmakers, writers and actors make contacts with Hollywood professionals.” A similar anti-Islamophobia message was also promoted by an interfaith group called Shoulder to Shoulder which works towards “ending anti-Muslim sentiment founded in response to post 9/11 Islamophobia towards American Muslims.” Health Care for All The list has included the names of a group of Muslim organizations which have been recognized for their role in offering free health care for all faiths. Founded by a group of Muslim medical students in Los Angeles in the 1990s, UMMA Community Clinic “offers high-quality health care to all regardless of faith, race or financial ability,” the paper said. “UMMA also hosts semi-annual health fairs where services including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and diabetes screenings,
vaccinations, and health education are offered at no cost.” Another group, the Chicago-based Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), also provides no-cost primary health care and other services to people living in the city’s Southwest Side. “They provide this free health clinic because they believe that “adequate and quality health care is a basic human right,” Huff Post added. Niagara Foundation, founded by Turkish Muslim scholar Fethullah Gulen, organizes conferences, lectures, retreats and more to promote interfaith dialogue and awareness. “One of the Foundation’s programs is called Abraham’s Tent and brings community members together across religions and cultures to share a meal and build multicultural friendships,” the paper wrote. Other groups such as the Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation and NY Turning Point advocated for peace and safety in Muslim homes by combating domestic violence. Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to an estimated Muslim minority of six to eight million. An earlier Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans Muslims are loyal to their country and optimistic about their future in the United States.

Woman Chairs US Largest Muslim Group CAIRO – America’s largest Muslim advocacy group has picked Ohioan female Muslim lawyer Roula Allouch as its new acting national board chair replacing previous chair Omar Zaki who stepped down after two years in his post. “I would like thank Omar Zaki for his service to the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR) and to the defense of civil rights for all Americans,” Allouch said in a CAIR statement obtained by OnIslam.net. “I hope to continue and strengthen CAIR’s efforts to enhance understanding of Islam and Muslims, to encourage civic participation by American Muslims and to build coalitions with like-minded individuals and organizations to promote justice and mutual understanding.” Allouch, an attorney practicing in Ohio and Kentucky, focuses on employment law, insurance defense and general
civil litigation.
Allouch is a member of the American, Kentucky, and Cincinnati Bar Associations and serves as public
service co-coordinator for the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and is the Kentucky young lawyer delegate to the American Bar Association House of Delegates. She has also served as vice chair of CAIR’s board when Omar Zaki held the post of CAIR chairman. Allouch has also served as president of CAIR’s Cincinnati chapter from 2008 to 2013. Her choice was welcomed by Nihad Awad, CAIR National Executive Director, who praised her dedication. “Roula’s dedication and legal expertise
make her an ideal choice to head an organization that seeks to prevent the ongoing erosion of civil liberties in our society,” said Awad. Though there are no official figures, America is believed to be the home of nearly 7-8 million Muslims. Established in 1994, CAIR is a non-profit grassroots organization headquartered in Washington DC, with 35 offices and chapters across the US and Canada. It strives to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. This September, the organization celebrates 20 years in action to serve the Muslim community and correct misconceptions about Islam and Muslims.
US Muslims Help Fight Hunger CAIRO – Muslim volunteers have turned together to package thousands of meals for international relief effort, the event planned to inspire other communities to help end hunger around the world. “Wow, what an event! Such dedication and energy,” General Hazem Bata, Secretary of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), said in a statement published on ISNA’s website and obtained by OnIslam.net. “I was very impressed with the community. Everyone really stepped up. You had to be there appreciate to truly appreciate it.” Bata was among the volunteers who participated in the project entitled, “The Joy of Caring & Sharing: Feed the Hungry.” This event was facilitated by the “Stop Hunger Now” project and cosponsored by the North American Bangladeshi Islamic Community (NABIC) and Islamic Relief USA.
Hosted last Friday, the event was attended by more than 150 volunteers who turned out to package over 30,000 meals for international relief effort. The event is not the first to be hosted by ISNA. Last year, ISNA held a similar event at its annual convention where more than 200 volunteers packaged over 40,000 meals. ISNA is the largest Muslim umbrella organization in North America. Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to an estimated Muslim minority of six to eight million. An earlier Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans Muslims are loyal to their country and optimistic about their future in the United States. Another US survey has revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith. According to Islamic Shari`ah, a capable Muslim pays 2.5 percent

Do the immigrants celebrate Independence Day? By Maguy Makhlouf In 1994 on the Fourth of July, Dr. Suheila Hajj and her family landed in San Antonio, Texas as a new immigrant family. “We landed here and were surprised and astonished by the look of the American flags small and large everywhere,” said Hajj, “and we learned that it was the Independence Day.” Hajj is a married Syrian woman, a pediatrician and the mother of two adult children, her son Wissam and her daughter Nagham. She lives in Phoenix, Ariz. with her husband Toufic. They left their luxurious life in Syria as young professionals who had a very nice family, an active social life and a support system that any person wishes to have. They came to this country when her husband Toufic got his green card from his siblings. “I cried through the whole trip from Damascus to San Antonio.” Said Hajj, She sadly adds that she cried nightly from homesickness for the next three years as her family slept, so she would not discourage them from going on. People immigrate with hope for a better life. The history of immigration started with the creation of the Earth. In the 1600s and 1700s, colonists sailed from England and other European
countries to America to escape persecution and to look for freedom. Freedom caused them many hardships: loss of life, poverty, unstable lives, displacement, deracination and unemployment. But they never gave up because they believed that freedom was worth sacrifices. Hend Faraj was originally a Lebanese w o m a n . Currently she is the mother of three kids ages 21, 20 and 7, a real estate professional and president of The Lebanese Club in Arizona. Her journey into the United States of America started in 1992 with the words “I DO!” A marriage proposal that offered her the dream. The dream of having a family, like all young women, and the dream of exploring new horizons in the U.S., the land of the free!

“Like all immigrants, my life was a struggle,” said Faraj. “A struggle to fit and to blend in my new society and yet to keep in my heart and mind and to implant into my kids the great values and supreme culture I carried with me from my Mother country.” When Faraj first came to the states, she wished she could bring her Lebanese values and principals here to the U.S.; then it will become Utopia, the perfect society. Faraj dreams of returning to Lebanon. She also prays for peace and freedom in Lebanon. Hajj also prays for peace in the Middle East and especially for her home country of Syria. After 20 years, Hajj says” I’m grateful now more than any time in my life that I came to America, despite the hard and difficult journey we’ve had here.”
She adds,” Through hard work and dedication and the help of the Lord, God helped me finish my residency and start my practice in the U.S. and make a difference in people’s lives. My daughter Nagham made it to one of the best schools in the country and in six months will be an attorney. My son Wissam finished his under grad school with almost a full scholarship and currently is doing his Master’s in Architecture along with his beautiful bride who’s sharing his journey and pursuing her education as a pharmacist. “ The United State was and remains the refuge for people from all over the world. People from different countries, ethnicity and religions escape to this country, seeking freedom, peace and hope. Faraj, like other American people, celebrates the Fourth of July with her family and friends at a gathering with a barbecue and fireworks. “Currently and in spite of what is going on all around the world: wars, killing, terrorism, genocides, etc…. I think how can any country claim independence? Are they really?” For these reasons, I would like to ask President Obama and all the world leaders, “Why choose slavery over freedom? Why choose war over peace? Why choose death over life?”

Republicans Taunt US Muslim Reporter TEXAS – Aspiring to a special coverage of Republican Party’s annual convention in Texas, young American Muslim reporter Heba Said said was ridiculed and called “Islamist” by the delegates at the convention only for donning an Islamic headscarf. “I attended the convention as a reporter hoping to tell readers about the panel discussions I attended, but I discovered a cultlike hatred that is simply disgusting,” Heba Said, a senior at the University of Texas at Arlington and the opinion editor of the school paper, The Shorthorn, wrote in her column. The 22-year-old Muslim reporter said that she was targeted, mocked and faced discrimination for her Islamic attire at Texas GOP convention that ended a week ago. Applying for media credentials to attend the convention, the Muslim reporter aimed to tell her readers about the
experience of sitting during panel discussions with delegates. Yet, the senior student’s dream was

shattered, turning into a nightmare of racial abuse.
“Panelists threw the word “Islamist” around as if it were perfectly OK, and one man even asked if I felt alone at a meeting. “I was referred to as “you people” and “y’all Muslims” more times than I can count. “The worst part was the way delegates looked at me, as if I were something to fear when I approached them,” she added. The Muslim reporter’s complaints were rejected by Texas GOP chairman. “I did not observe any of this,” Steve Munisteri, Texas GOP chairman, told Yahoo News on Saturday, June 14. “I never heard a single anti-Muslim statement, and I never saw any antiMuslim activity.” The Republican leader said that this year’s meeting drew 10,000 participants, and that everyone was expected to “treat their fellow delegates and guests with respect and civility.” “Is it possible that some knucklehead said something that was mean-spirited to somebody? Sure,” he said. “Would the state party ever condone that? Absolutely not.” Optimistic Feeling discriminated against, the young Muslim expressed enthusiasm to pursue her aspiration to become a successful reporter, saying that she remains “optimistic”. “Because this happened, it means that there’s not enough diversity out there,”

Heba told Yahoo News. “It’s encouraged me.” The Muslim student, who will graduate next year with a degree in political science and minor in Arabic, aims to attend a law school or graduate school in order to become a political correspondent. Like hundreds of the attendants, she wanted to capture a photo for the GOP tea party star Ted Cruz, but she feared of being “profiled by police”. “I found five police officers behind me, hands on holsters watching me intently,” she wrote. “Armed with a press badge and an iPhone, I turned to them held up my media credentials and asked if I could help them with something, as my heart tried to escape my chest. “They did not respond but broke up into groups of two and continued watching me. If I was the biggest threat at that convention, then I must be seriously underestimating myself.” Asking about Republican’s prospects to draw Muslim voters, Heba wrote that she faced discrimination, stirring up speculations about her American identity. “After discussing with one candidate whether there were Muslim outreach plans, I almost didn’t feel like I was allowed to be American, as if what he said stripped me from my American identity,” the Muslim reporter wrote. “He asked me where I was from. When I responded, “Texas,” he asked me where I was really from, as if there were no way it could possibly be from Texas. “On my mom’s side I’m thirteenth generation American,” she told Yahoo News. Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to from 7-8 million Muslims. An earlier Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans Muslims are loyal to their country and optimistic about their future in the United States. Since the 9/11 attacks on the United States, many Muslims have complained of facing discrimination and stereotypes in the society because of their Islamic attires or identities. A recent report by the umbrella Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has found that Islamophobia in the US is on the rise.

Israel Combs West Bank for Missing Israelis TEL AVIV – Israeli occupation forces stormed the West Bank occupied city of Hebron on Saturday morning, June 14, arresting scores of Palestinians as they intensified their search for three Israelis who went missing on Friday. “Search activity, both operational and in terms of intelligence, is continuing,” an Israeli forces spokeswoman told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Saturday, refusing to confirm speculation about a possible kidnapping. “For us, these three youths are missing,” was all she would say. Search has been intensified after three Israelis, all students at a Jewish seminary, went missing late Thursday as they were hitchhiking between Bethlehem and Hebron. Military radio said they were students at a Jewish seminary and went missing late Thursday near a bus stop. The news was confirmed after the Israeli occupation army statement on Friday. “The IDF (Israeli military) confirms three teenagers are currently missing,” an army statement said. “The individuals were last seen late last night in the area of Gush Etzion,” it said, referring to the main settlement bloc in the southern West Bank.
The army gave no further details and refused to say whether the three had been kidnapped. “We do not give details that could hamper the investigation,” a spokesman said, adding only that a
“large scale” search was under way. Though no authority has claimed responsibility for the presumed kidnapping, Israeli media speculated the three may have been kidnapped by Palestinians. Similar accusations were made by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu whose office said it held the Palestinian leadership responsible for their disappearance. “Israel holds the Palestinian Authority
Arabic Yellow Pages
responsible for the wellbeing of the three missing Israeli teens,” spokesman Ofir Gendelman wrote on Twitter. Always Blamed Accusations of kidnapping the three have extended far beyond finger pointing after Israeli forces attacked the occupied city of Hebron arresting 12 Palestinians on Saturday morning. Moreover, an AFP journalist said the army had set up roadblocks in the southern West Bank and was searching vehicles. Troops also closed the main crossings into the Gaza Strip to prevent the three, one of whom also holds US citizenship, from being smuggled out of Israel. General Adnan al-Damiri, spokesman for the Palestinian Authority’s security services, described Netanyahu’s remarks as “mad”. He asserted that the Palestinian government had no authority in Gush Etzion area, a settlement bloc under total Israeli control. “Even if there was an earthquake,
Netanyahu would blame the Palestinian Authority,” he told AFP. Another Palestinian official said the security services were “cooperating” with Israel to gather information on the teenagers’ disappearance. The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed branch of the Islamist Hamas movement which until June 2 governed the Gaza Strip, issued a statement warning that “the occupier will never have security” but did not refer specifically to the missing teens. If kidnapping was confirmed, the three will not be the first Israelis to be captured in occupied lands. In 2006, Israeli army soldier Gilad Shalit was taken prisoner during a cross-border raid by Palestinian resistance groups. Following his capture, Israel imposed a crippling siege on the Gaza Strip, home to 1.8 million Palestinians, badly affecting livelihood in the seaside enclave. Israel also launched a three-week deadly offensive on Gaza, which left thousands of people killed and injured and destroyed thousands of houses. Shalit was released in 2005 under a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas, under which more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners were freed.

RAMADAN

Ramadan: the Month of Prayer and Remembrance (Dhikr) of Allah By Lolita V Jefferson Ed.D Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Each slave of Allah who fasts has a prayer to be answered at the time of breaking his/her fast (at the proper time). The answer to his/her prayer is given as a reward either in the world or in the Hereafter in an eternal fashion. (Kanzu’lUmmal, 3:328) Ramadan is the month of prayer.Prayers said in holy nights, in the appointed Three Months, and especially in Ramadan are close to acceptance. As for the time of eating after fasting, it is the time when man gets closer to Allah, and when s/he feels the joy of having fulfilled His command. Then the believer is cleansed of his/her faults and blemishes and feels a strong attachment to Allah. Just at that time, if man prays to his/her Lord, s/he will not be left unanswered.
S/he will either get what s/he wishes in the world and thus receive the reward of the prayer in advance, or send a light to his/her hereafter and eternal life in a better way. This is because Allah knows better what His slave needs, and accepts his/her prayers in the way that is good for him/ her. Ramadan: the Month of Allah’s Remembrance (Dhikrullah) Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says: Those who engage in remembering Allah on the days of Ramadan are cleansed of their sins, and those who wish from Allah are not left empty-handed. (Kanzu’lUmmal, 8:464) Ramadan is a season when Allah is remembered often and prayers are said in abundance. Believers who fast throughout Ramadan pass their nights and days remembering Allah.
They remember Allah both with their behaviors and actions and with their mouths and tongues; and they rest their hearts and souls. They also open their hands and hearts to their Lord in order to ask both their needs in the world and their expectations about the hereafter. They know that this month is a peaceful month in which wishes are fulfilled, needs are cared for and expectations are answered. At the same time, they try to carry out different types of remembrance at different times and places. In the following hadith narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentions the different sorts of remembrance of Allah: Whoever fasts in Ramadan in silence and peace for one day, says: ‘Allah is the greatest’, recites: “La ilaha illallah” (there is no god but Allah), thanks Allah, knows what is permitted as permitted and what
is forbidden as forbidden, Allah forgives all his/her past sins. (Kanzu’l-Ummal, 8:482) A believer who becomes like an angel in this month by fasting is cleansed of his/ her sins which are spiritual dirts and also tries to deserve Allah’s acceptance/ pleasure, by reciting the words of greatness (Allah is the greatest), words of oneness (There is no God but Allah), words of thankfulness, prayers for the Prophet, words of exaltedness of Allah, and words of repentance. It is related by Abu Hurairah (RAA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said “When the month of Ramadhan comes, the Gates of Heaven are thrown open and the Gates of Hell are shut, and the devils are put behind bars”. [Bukhari and Muslim] InshaAllah May Allah guide us and keep us on the straight path as we approach Ramadan. Amin!!
