Obama birth certificate OK by Arizona official

By JACQUES BILLEAUD Associated Press Arizona’s secretary of state said Wednesday that Hawaii’s official verification of President Barack Obama’s birth records meets necessary requirements, meaning the president’s name will appear on Arizona’s ballot in the fall. The inquiry launched recently by Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett gave official weight to a long-simmering political controversy generated by those who say that Obama was not born in the U.S. and therefore is ineligible to hold the Continued on page

What was your most memorable summer? Muslim Voice By Sumbal Akhter “My most memorable summer has got to be when I went to Makkah and Medinah. It was a life changing experience and it really helped me get closer to God. It was a surreal feeling. I can safely say that there is absolutely no place like those two cities. It was literally the most magical experience I have ever been through. I met the most amazing, selfless people. I saw the most beautiful people of the world, from all walks of life, from all paths, for one cause. I recommend people to try and go as soon as they can because it was easily the best experience of my life. That was definitely the most memorable summer I have ever had. Ethnically-Diverse, Encourage Civic Engagement A comprehensive study of mosques and the attitudes of mosque leaders in the United States released today indicates that the number of American mosques increased 74 percent since 2000 and that Islamic houses of worship are ethnically-diverse institutions led by officials who advocate positive civic engagement.

A coalition of major American Muslim and academic organizations released the report, titled “The American Mosque 2011: Basic Characteristics of the American Mosque, Attitudes of Mosque Leaders,” at a news conference this morning at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The report’s major findings include: * The number of mosques and mosque participants continues to show significant growth, from 1,209 mosques in 2000 to 2,106 in 2011. New York and California have the largest number of mosques. Seventy-six percent of mosques were established since 1980. * Mosque leaders overwhelmingly endorse Muslim involvement in American society. More than 98 percent of mosque leaders agree that Muslims should be involved in American institutions and 91 percent agree that Muslims should be involved in politics. Continued on page 2

Manhunt continues for fugitive from Arizona jail By Newsfinder from AP

T

he search continues for a fugitive who walked out of a Maricopa County jail using another inmate’s identification two weeks ago. The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/ KPBZ5D) that Matt Hershey, a deputy U.S. marshal in Arizona, said the U.S. Marshals Service is still collecting information and following up on leads on Rocky Marquez. He offered no specifics on where investigators believe Marquez might be staying, though the Marshals service continues to work with authorities in Mexico. According to investigators, Marquez, 33, walked out of the sheriff’s Lower Buckeye Jail with a group of other inmates who were being released earlier this month. Officials

said Marquez took the identification of another inmate who was scheduled for release, shaved his head and dressed in the other inmate’s civilian clothes. Surveillance footage shows Marquez calmly waiting with other inmates and walking out the door. Investigators believe he was picked up after leaving the jail. ``Pretty much the whole squad of our task force has been working it every day since it happened,’’ Hershey said. ``A lot of resources are being used on it.’’ Last week, investigators arrested Antonio Melara, 20, and his mother, Carmella Marbury, 43, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit escape.

Marquez was in Lower Buckeye Jail on allegations of perjury, misconduct involving weapons, fraud, forgery and witness tampering. On May 1, a federal grand jury handed up an eight-count indictment with allegations tied to a largescale marijuana-distribution ring and Marquez’s efforts to conceal the proceeds by purchasing property, including two $400,000 homes. Marquez’s escape marked the second time in four months that an inmate fled the sheriff’s custody. Jairo Contreras, 20, snuck out of a Maricopa County jail in an oversized laundry cart and was captured about 10 days later in Santa Fe following a car chase and standoff with local law enforcement and the Marshals Service. The Marshals Service is continuing to work with authorities in Mexico to hunt for Marquez and other fugitives, Hershey said. ``Those are being worked on a daily basis,’’ he said. ``Each case poses a few different challenges that we’re always working through.’’

U.S. Mosques Ethnically-Diverse, Encourage Civic Engagement * The vast majority of mosque leaders do not feel that American society is hostile to Islam. * The majority of mosque leaders (56 percent) adopt a flexible approach to interpretation of Quran and Sunnah (the normative practice of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad) that takes into account the overall purposes of Islamic law and modern circumstances. * The vast majority (87 percent) of mosque leaders disagree that “radicalism” is increasing among Muslim youth . Many mosque leaders say the real challenge for them is not radicalism and extremism among the youth, but how to attract and keep them close to

the mosque. * Mosques remain an extremely diverse religious institution. Only a tiny minority of mosques (3 percent) have just one ethnic group that attends that mosque. South Asians, Arab-Americans and African-Americans remain the dominant ethnic groups, but significant numbers of Somalis, West Africans and Iraqis now worship at mosques nationwide. * The number of mosques in urban areas is decreasing, while the number of mosques in suburban areas is increasing. In 2011, 28 percent of mosques were located in suburbs, up from 16 percent in 2000. * The conversion rate per mosque has

remained steady over the past two decades. In 2011, the average number of converts per mosque was 15.3. In 2000 the average was 16.3 converts per mosque. * Shia mosques are also expanding in number. Some 44 percent of all Shia mosques were established in the 1990s. The report is the first part of the larger U.S. Mosque Survey 2011 to be published. To conduct the survey, researchers counted all mosques in America and then conducted telephone interviews with a sample of mosque leaders. (The study has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.)

What was your most memorable summer? much as a person within just two weeks.” –Aminah Shakoor “My most memorable summer was the summer of 2010 because that was the first time I visited Pakistan after moving to Arizona. I was in Pakistan for 10 weeks and I loved every minute of it – I went to places I hadn’t visited in my 19 years of living there and tried (almost) every restaurant’s food. I guess not being in Pakistan makes you realize what all you’re missing out on (mainly the food, family and friends) and when you go back, you realize how much you took for granted and you feel like you have to make the most of it. I absolutely loved that trip and the summer spent lazing around, shopping and spending time with my friends and family – It’s like they say: “There’s no place like home.” -Rida Abbasi “There comes a time when mankind gives up the trappings of our daily routine to search for something greater than our existence; a journey, a vision quest, a pilgrimage. We all are pilgrims of some sort, some choosing McDonalds as their shrine of choice to drink the dulcet delights of hormone processed milkshakes, to others the faithful willingly flagellate their bodies as they roid up for the gym. Within the barren deserts of Arabia rests the House of God, beckoning the faithful pilgrims to pay homage to Allah. The scorching sands of are unforgiving to unwary travelers. If you’re not too careful, that slimy ungulate you call a camel may keel over, all because the oasis water you thought you gave it was nothing more than sand filled trap that’s now caught in his feeble lungs. Rookie mistake. Now the camel is spitting at your face because of your outstandingly bad care. Another rookie mistake. Seeing the Kaabah with your own eyes will take your breath away. You may have seen the Kaabah on a postcard, on international television shows, or maybe you’re content

with knowing how it looks on your little prayer mat design, but until you see the House of God in person you cannot appreciate the grandeur and majesty. I made tawaf, circling the Kabah with my fellow Muslim brothers from all around the world, trying to avoid the wheelchair Aunties from cauterizing my heels with their hotwheels that would sink into bare feet. Yet another rookie mistake. There’s an inner peace, an aura of solemnity that surrounds the air of the Kaabah. We go to Allah’s house for no other reason than to get closer to him to forgive our daily transgressions. No matter what harsh conditions we face, we’ll brave the sandstorms and trudge through the blazing heat to heed the call of our Lord. We will travel by foot, by every lean camel, and from every deep ravine to worship him.” –Osman Salim “My most memorable summer is a few years ago when me and my family traveled all OVER the country. We ‘chilled’ (ha, corny joke) in Canada. Then we went to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and snaked through a whole bunch of other states. It was really fun, as we got to see a lot of stuff that we usually don’t see in Arizona (like greenery!). We got to see family and friends we hadn’t seen in a LONG time, and we got to relax and just hang around.” – Safa Akhter “My most memorable summer by far would be the summer of 2011 when I went for Umrah to Mecca. No summer vacation surpasses the sheer joy and peace that I got from this trip. I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to visit such holy grounds. The peace and serenity that surrounds this place is incomparable to any place i have ever visited. The first time that I laid my eyes on the holy Kabbah sent chills down my body and it was a sight I will never forget. Even to this day when I think back at the moment when I

first saw the Kabbah it still brings the same exuberant memories back. The hotel that we stayed in looked over at the Kabbah and every morning Aminah we woke up to the call of prayer form the Shakoor holy Kabbah, a change from the run-of-themill alarm clock that I wake up to here every morning. Every day we were up at the crack of dawn and our day of prayers and devotion to Allah began. It was truly a relaxing and peaceful time for me there, away from the hustle and bustle of my regular life to one that just involved devoting Safa all my time into prayer Akhter and relaxation and of course indulging in the delicious local food! The summer of 2011 was one that I will remember for the rest of my life. I hope the next time I visit Mecca it will be for Hajj Inshallah! A trip I definitely look forward to.” –Armeen Alladin “One of my most memorable summers started off with my family and me making the drastic decision to move to back to India. We had made this due to my grandfather’s ill being at the time. Within 3 weeks or so, my brothers and I were already on a flight back to the motherland. Due to the moral support of us grandchildren, my grandfather already became more joyous. My aunt used to go to the Mandir everyday to follow this ritual of putting three-leaved clovers there. I had just gotten to India and really wanted to pray for my grandfather too so I started joining in. We went for a few

hours every afternoon for a month straight. The highlight of it for me started one week into the daily trips, I had discovered a fourleaved clover for the first time which is said to be extremely lucky. I cheered up right then and there and I felt a force of energy find its way to my grandfather’s soul. Days would go by and suddenly, I started finding more four-leaved clovers, than five, than even a few six. It was mind-blowing and the priest always seemed astonished. He claimed to have never seen that before in the decades he had been serving the holy one. My summer was coming to an end but my grandfather’s health soon turned around completely. It will have been seven years in slightly over a month now and he is still fighting the battle of life. Thanks to that summer that gave us hope.”- Saumya Banker

Obama birth certificate OK by Arizona official nation’s highest office. The Obama administration attempted a year ago to dismiss the conflict by releasing his long-form birth certificate showing that he was born in Hawaii. But skeptics maintained their stance and eventually Bennett announced he would seek further verification at the request of numerous voters who contacted his office, even saying he was prepared to leave Obama’s name off the state’s ballot in November. Bennett, a Republican, said in a written statement that Hawaii officials ``have complied with the request, and I consider the matter closed.’’ Bennett’s office says Obama’s name will appear on Arizona’s November ballot as long as he wins his party’s nomination and all paperwork is properly completed. Obama campaign spokesman Mahen Gunaratna noted that Bennett also is Arizona campaign co-chair for Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney. Gunaratna said Bennett’s inquiry will have no bearing on the election, ``But it does present an opportunity for Mitt Romney to finally rise to the occasion and denounce the extreme voices in his party.’’ The Romney campaign responded saying

the candidate has made his stance on the issue clear. ``I think the citizenship test has been passed,’’ Romney said to CNBC in April, a statement relayed to The Associated Press by his campaign on Wednesday. ``I believe the president was born in the United States. And there are real reasons to get this guy out of office.’’ Hawaii State Registrar Alvin Onaka sent the document Tuesday confirming the information on Obama’s birth certificate, such as the Honolulu hospital where he was born and the names and ages of his parents. Hawaii officials have repeatedly verified Obama’s citizenship as skeptics have maintained that the president was born in Kenya, his father’s home country. State and federal courts also have rejected lawsuits over the issue. The verification process was the subject of three months of back and forth, with Hawaii officials initially saying Bennett had to show why he needed the information as part of ordinary business. Other Arizona officials over the last year have raised questions about Obama’s birth certificate. Last year, the state Legislature passed a bill that would have required presidential

candidates to prove their citizenship before their names could appear on the state’s ballot.

provide microfilm of the original birth certificate or the original document itself.

The proposal was vetoed by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who called the measure ``a bridge too far.’’

Earlier this spring, Bennett’s office made a change that requires candidates to complete a new form asking eligibility questions, including whether they are natural-born U.S. citizens.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America, had a volunteer posse launch an investigation into the issue, saying in March there was reason to believe Obama’s long-form birth certificate is a computergenerated forgery. Arpaio, known for his hardline stance on illegal immigration, said Wednesday the information given to Bennett’s office doesn’t dispel his suspicions. He vowed to continue his posse’s investigation until Hawaii officials

In the past, political parties drafted their own certification documents that Arizona officials say didn’t consistently address the issue of qualifications. Democrat state Rep. Chad Campbell, Arizona’s House minority leader, called on Bennett to step down as co-chair of the Romney campaign, saying if he doesn’t, then he should resign as secretary of state. Bennett declined through a spokesman to comment on Campbell’s appeal.

Arizona may add more uses for

medical marijuana A

rizona is considering requests to expand its fledgling medical marijuana program to allow use of the drug for an array of conditions, including post-traumatic stress syndrome and migraines, beyond those allowed under the law approved by voters two years ago. The Department of Health Services, which is required under the 2010 law to consider requests to expand coverage, holds a public hearing Friday on the first batch of requests. Besides PTSD and migraines, the requests for covered conditions include depression and general anxiety disorder. The law already permits medical marijuana use for such medical reasons as cancer, glaucoma, AIDS, chronic pain, muscle spasms and hepatitis C. Even as the state considers expanding the program, it is still implementing a key part of the law. Friday is the deadline to submit applications to operate medical marijuana dispensaries. Up to 126 dispensaries will be permitted statewide, but only one per designated area. Those typically are either rural towns or parts of metropolitan areas.

The process of awarding licenses to dispensaries that will sell marijuana to users was delayed by Gov. Jan Brewer’s reluctance to implement that part of the law. The state has awarded medical marijuana user cards to more than 28,000 people. Chronic pain is the most common medical condition, though users can have more than one. Most of the users also got permission to grow marijuana until there is a dispensary in their area. Arizona is among 17 states that have enacted laws allowing medical marijuana use, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. States’ programs vary, and some already cover the additional medical conditions being considered by Arizona. For example, New Mexico allows medical marijuana use for PTSD, while California’s covered ``serious medical conditions’’ include migraines. Meanwhile, Colorado’s decadeold program has denied petitions to add more than a dozen conditions, including PTSD, hepatitis C and depression. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law, but the Veterans Affairs Department in 2011 issued guidelines that permit patients treated at VA hospitals and clinics to use medical marijuana in states where it is legal. The guidelines don’t allow VA doctors to prescribe medical marijuana.

The Naturopathic Physicians Medical Board suspended another doctor’s license for failing to adequately examine patients and document their conditions before certifying them for medical marijuana. In advance of Friday’s hearing, Health Services Director Will Humble said he is most interested in peer-reviewed scientific studies, not personal testimony. ``To me, it’s really about presenting good science,’’ Humble said. ``To me, that’s the compelling information that we need.’’ Humble’s department has contracted with the University of Arizona to identify research relevant to the requests for expanded coverage. ``I’m not aware of very much published literature to support

adding those,’’ he said. Humble said he feels a need to be cautious about adding conditions because he doesn’t want patients to forego traditional medical treatment to opt for questionable benefits from marijuana. And he said Arizona’s law doesn’t allow the agency to remove a condition once it’s listed, so it would be troubling if scientifically reliable information later surfaces that undermines the value of approving medical marijuana for a particular condition. Brewer last year balked at allowing dispensaries, saying she feared state employees could face federal criminal prosecution. She later acquiesced after a judge ruled the state had no discretion on implementation of the dispensary portion of the law. The state already had received about 200 dispensary applications through closeof-business Wednesday, and Humble said he expected many more before Friday’s deadline.

Immigrant advocates criticize fundraising effort By JACQUES BILLEAUD Associated Press

T

wo of Arizona’s most prominent advocates for tougher border enforcement are seeking financial contributions to counter potential legislation that would prevent states and cities from enforcing immigration laws. An email solicitation made by former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on behalf of the Ban Amnesty Now group seeks donations to oppose legislation that U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York has promised to pursue if Arizona’s 2010 immigration law is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. Critics of Pearce and Arpaio say the group is within its rights to seek the contributions but added that they believe the two are using illegal immigration as a fundraising tool and aren’t all that interested in lessening the country’s immigration woes. ``It seems they haven’t heard the political message,’’ said Randy Parraz, an organizer of a recall effort that led to Pearce’s ouster from the Legislature in November, adding that rank-and-file Arizonans are more concerned about jobs and education than illegal immigration. ``They are still playing that one note.’’ Pearce, the chief sponsor of the state’s 2010 immigration enforcement law and now president of Ban Amnesty Now, said the fundraising pitch is no different than those made regularly by politicians and that contributions are needed to continue opposing those who seek soft immigration policies. ``Of course, they are going to complain,’’ Pearce said.

``And the reason they complain is that they are losing. The public wants the borders secured.’’ The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule in late June on Gov. Jan Brewer’s appeal of a ruling that blocked enforcement of the most controversial sections of the immigration law. The governor is asking the nation’s highest court to overturn a ruling that, among other things, blocked enforcement of a requirement that police, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.

pass. Kelley said Pearce and Arpaio aren’t interested in genuine efforts to fix the nation’s immigration woes.

The day before the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case late last month, Schumer held a hearing regarding the Arizona law. Schumer vowed that if the Supreme Court upholds the law known as SB1070, he would pursue legislation that would prohibit states and cities from enforcing immigration laws without first getting federal permission.

``They’re more about the emotions behind it and the politics behind it rather than coming up with smart policies,’’ Kelley said. ``The tone that this and other organizations take isn’t about a constructive outcome. It’s about continued shouting.’’ Arpaio’s office declined to comment and said Pearce should speak for the group.

Angela Kelley, an immigration analyst for the liberalleaning Center for American Progress, said the legislation promised by Schumer would have a tough time becoming law given the difficulty in recent years of getting enough support for immigration proposals to

Pearce said no one is twisting arms to get contributions and scoffed at the notion that he shouldn’t seek contributions to fight potential legislation that faces tough odds at passage.

Agent: ‘OMG’ diet book subject of 7-figure deal

Bosnians bury 66 victims of wartime killing

Associated Press

T

he author of a selfpublished diet book that advocates skipping breakfast and taking cold baths has agreed to lucrative deals with British and U.S. publishers.

Associated Press

T

housands have gathered in the eastern Bosnian town of Visegrad to bury the remains of 66 Muslim Bosniaks killed and thrown into the river by Bosnian Serb forces at the start of the country’s 1992-95 war.

Grand Central Publishing announced Tuesday it has acquired Venice A. Fulton’s ``Six Weeks to OMG,’’ the object of a multi-day auction. Michael Joseph, an imprint of Penguin UK, won rights for the book in Britain, where ``Six Weeks’’ has been a word-ofmouth hit.

The victims’ remains were discovered two years ago, when a manmade lake that divides Bosnia and Serbia was partially drained for the maintenance of a dam. They were identified through DNA analysis and buried on Saturday at a cemetery in Visegrad.

Literary agent Richard Pine, who represented Fulton, said in a statement that the Grand Central deal was worth seven figures and that terms with Michael Joseph were ``equally spectacular.’’

Thousands of non-Serb civilians from the area were rounded up and killed and their bodies dumped into the Drina River from Ottoman-era bridge in Visegrad or buried in mass graves around the town.

The book, coming out in July, is known for its tagline ``Get skinnier than all your friends’’ and for such unorthodox advice as being careful about eating broccoli.

Weekly US jobless aid applications dip to 370,000 By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER

again,’’ he said in a note to clients.

AP Economics Writer

Economists forecast employers have added 160,000 jobs this month. That’s above April’s gains but below the pace set this winter. The government will report next Friday on May job growth.

T

he number of people seeking unemployment benefits changed little last week, signaling modest job growth. The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for benefits dipped by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 370,000. Applications have leveled off this month after declining from April’s five-month high of 392,000. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, has also dropped _ it was 370,000 last week.

Some companies are launching mass layoffs. Hewlett-Packard Co.’s chief executive, Meg Whitman, said Wednesday that the company will cut 27,000 jobs, or 8 percent of its work force, over the next two years. The unemployment rate has fallen from 9.1 percent in August to 8.1 percent last month.

The lower level indicates hiring could pick up in May from April’s sluggish pace. When applications drop below 375,000 a week, it typically suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Part of the reason for the drop is that employers have added a million jobs over the past five months. But it has also declined because some people gave up looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively looking for a job.

Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics, said applications should fall soon given that some recent data indicate the economy is improving.

Hiring soared over the winter, when applications were dropping steadily. Job gains averaged 252,000 in the DecemberFebruary period.

``We think it is just a matter of time ... before claims start to drop back down

The pace of hiring slowed in March and April to an average of 135,000 jobs per

New Google data show Microsoft’s piracy problems By MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writer

G

oogle’s Internet search engine receives more complaints about websites believed to be infringing on Microsoft’s copyrights than it does about material produced by entertainment companies pushing for tougher online piracy laws. A snapshot of Microsoft’s apparently chronic copyright headaches emerged in new data that Google released Thursday to provide a better understanding of the intellectual property abuses on the Internet. Google has a good vantage point on the issue because it operates the Internet’s dominant search engine with the largest index of websites. About 97 percent of the copyright removal requests sent to Google are found to be valid by the company, prompting the offending links to be blocked from its influential search results. The new report includes a breakdown

of all requests Google has received since July 2011 to remove copyrightinfringing content from its search index. Google plans to update the information daily at http://www.google.com/ transparencyreport/removals/copyright . Google Inc. has logged more than 2.5 million requests in the past 11 months to remove links believed to be violating Microsoft’s copyrights. That ranked well above second-place NBC Universal, the operator of several television networks and a movie studio, whose copyrighted content was cited in nearly 1 million removal requests during the same period. The data doesn’t identify the specifics of the reported infringements, but Microsoft Corp. confirmed virtually all of its complaints are about websites offering bogus versions of its Windows operating system and other software. ``Each month, Microsoft requests the removal of links to web pages that infringe Microsoft’s copyrights so that customers are not deceived into

month. That raised fears that the job market could be weakening.

Other economic data this week has been mixed.

Economists have cautioned that a warm winter led companies to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn’t occur until spring. That gave the appearance that the economy had strengthened in January and February and weakened in early spring.

Orders for long-lasting factory goods edged up slightly in April, according to a Commerce Department report released Thursday. But that was largely because of an increase in volatile demand for commercial aircraft.

And temporary layoffs stemming from spring holidays likely pushed unemployment benefit applications higher in April, economists noted. The number of people receiving benefits is falling, partly because extended benefit programs are ending in many states. About 6.2 million people received benefits in the week ended May 5, the latest data available. That’s a drop of 105,000 from the previous week.

purchasing or downloading counterfeit software,’’ company spokesman Lou Gellos wrote in an email. Copyright-protected content owned by major music labels also spurred a high volume of removal requests. The Recording Industry Association of America, which has railed against digital piracy since the rise and fall of Napster’s music-sharing service more than a decade ago, was identified as the copyright owner in more than 416,000 requests. Other copyright owners on Google’s Top 10 list of removal requests include Universal Music and Sony Music and an adult entertainment site, BangBros.com. Google decided to share its insights on copyright abuse amid a rising outcry for a crackdown against online piracy that media companies have claimed is collectively costing them billions of dollars each year. The backlash inspired a piece of get-tougher legislation dubbed the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, that had the backing of most major music and move studios. The proposal caused dismay among major Internet companies who feared the law would stifle free speech and innovation. The bill was abandoned four months ago after fierce high-tech opposition that included a one-day blackout of popular websites such as Wikipedia and an online petition drive spearheaded by Google. Microsoft also opposed SOPA, although it wasn’t as strident in its criticism as other major technology companies. The Business Software Alliance, a group that includes Microsoft, initially supported SOPA before reversing its position as the backlash to the proposal intensified.

A key category that tracks business investment spending fell for a second straight month. New-home sales rose 3.3 percent in April from March, the government said Wednesday. That’s a healthy jump and puts sales at the second-highest level in two years. And sales of previously owned homes also rose in April, the government said Tuesday. The sales increase also boosted prices, which were 10.1 percent higher than 12 months earlier.

Online infringements in the U.S. are currently covered by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which requires the content owner to police sites for violations and then send requests to take down the material. Websites are required to respond promptly. Google says it now responds to requests within 11 hours, despite a rising volume of complaints. It sometimes receives more than 250,000 removal requests in a week, exceeding the total number sent to the company during the entire year of 2009. In the past month alone, Google received 1.2 million removal requests on behalf of 1,000 copyright owners who believe their content was being infringed upon at nearly 23,000 different websites, according to a blog post Thursday by Fred von Lohmann, the company’s senior copyright lawyer. In an interview Thursday, von Lohmann attributed the increased number of complaints to more sophisticated tracking technology that has enabled copyright owners to pinpoint violations more quickly than in the past. The websites most frequently targeted in the copyright complaints sent to Google were filestube.com (nearly 390,000 links requested for removal), torrentz.eu (more than 147,000 links) and 4shared. com (more than 132,000 links). Google’s new report doesn’t include copyright removal requests sent to its popular video site, YouTube, or its Blogger service. But Google’s search engine receives the most copyright complaints, accounting for about 60 percent of the 5.4 million removal requests the company processed last year, von Lohmann said.

Facebook to 5 surprises target Mideast in Egypt’s presidential with office in election Dubai Associated Press

E

gyptians went to the polls earlier this week to elect a new president after longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year. With a majority of ballots counted, here is a look at a handful of notable, if not surprising, developments: LEADING CANDIDATE CRASHES:

Associated Press

F

acebook is not letting a slumping stock get in the way of its global growth ambitions. The social networking company on Wednesday invited journalists to an event next week to launch its first office in the Middle East business hub of Dubai. A Dubai public relations firm hired by the Menlo Park, California-based company declined to comment further.

It said details on the Gulf outpost would be released at the May 30 event. Facebook itself didn’t respond to a request for comment. Facebook has some 30 offices worldwide, but doesn’t list any in the Arab world. It teamed with Cairo-based advertising company Connect Ads in 2010 to better reach advertisers in the region. Facebook shares have fallen sharply since the company’s initial public offering Friday.

Amr Moussa, a former foreign minister and ex-head of the Arab League, had led opinion polls for months. However, he failed to garner enough votes to make the June 16-17 runoff. OLD REGIME CANDIDATE MAKES CUT: Former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, a veteran of ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s government, got enough votes to make the June 16-17 runoff. Shafiq ran as an anti-revolutionary candidate, promising a return to the security and stability of Mubarak government. His success would have been inconceivable a year ago amid the revolutionary fever that ousted Mubarak. MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD EXPECTED:

WEAKER

THAN

Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate, got the most votes and will have the

SHAHNAWAZ CURRIM

lead going into the June 16-17 runoff. However, the Brotherhood’s showing in general was weak compared to its domination of parliamentary elections last year, a sign of public disenchantment with the group. LEFTIST CANDIDATE SURGES: Hamdeen Sabahi had a surprise last-minute surge after campaigning on promises to help the poor and harkening back to the nationalist, socialist ideology of Gamel Abdel-Nasser, Egypt’s president from 1956 to 1970. He will not go on to the June 16-17 runoff, but his strong performance shows that many voters were looking for an alternative candidate, one not connected to former President Hosni Mubarak or Islamist candidates. EXPECTED CONTENDER IN FOURTH Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, who was ousted by the Muslim Brotherhood last year after announcing his candidacy (the Brotherhood initially said it would not field a candidate), was seen as the face of moderate Islam. He put together a broad coalition of supporters, and was expected to be a contender for the June 16-17 runoff. However, with most votes counted, he was running a fourth. His decision to accept the endorsement of ultraconservative Islamists known as Salafis likely frightened many secularists and Christians who had been leaning toward him.

Troops in Somalia advance Saudi Arabia inks $3 billion trainer planes deal into rebel-held corridor By ABDI GULED Associated Press

A

frican Union and Somali forces captured new territory outside Mogadishu that has long been controlled by militant fighters, officials said Wednesday. Tanks are tearing through the thorny scrubland to the northwest of Mogadishu, where tens of thousands of internal refugees live in informal camps in an area known as the Afgoye corridor. Troops on Wednesday were about 9 kilometers (6 miles) from Afgoye town following the launch of the operation on Tuesday. African Union and Somali forces pushed al-Shabab militants out of Mogadishu last August. The forces are now trying to take control of areas outside of Mogadishu. ``Our main effort lies in fighting the terrorism,’’ Ugandan Brig. Paul Lokeck told reporters visiting the front line. ``The enemy has been fleeing toward Merca’’ he said, referring to a coastal town in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region. Abdikarim Yusuf Dhagabadan, chief of Somali armed forces told reporters that his forces are giving civilians a chance to pack their belongings and flee. That advice directly conflicted with a statement from AMISOM, the African Union force in

Mogadishu, which encouraged people in the corridor to remain in their homes. AMISOM said its troops are avoiding entering camps around the main road to Afgoye. The operation to move into Afgoye began on Tuesday with the goal of improving security in the corridor, an area northwest of Mogadishu with a large concentration of internally displaced people. The African Union force said that a senior al-Shabab commander and his escorts were killed during Tuesday’s fighting. ``Soon, once the security situation has stabilized, we hope to see that people will have the opportunity to return to their homes in Mogadishu,’’ said Wafula Wamunyinyi, a top African Union official. ``Humanitarian services provided by the international community will be available to them.’’ The top U.N. humanitarian official for Somalia, Mark Bowden, called on African Union and Somali troops to minimize the impact of the fighting on civilians. Bowden said the U.N. had no reports of ``significant’’ movements of people from the Afgoye corridor. But he said he was concerned prolonged fighting could lead to displacement, straining settlements where victims of last year’s famine now live.

S

audi Arabia said Wednesday it has signed a $3 billion deal with the United Kingdom to buy air force training planes, beefing up the Gulf nation’s defense capabilities as regional tensions rise. The deal includes 22 Hawk advanced jet trainers made by Britain’s BAE Systems PLC, the defense contractor said. Saudi Arabia will also receive 55 Swissmade Pilatus PC-21 propeller-driven trainers, as well as simulators, ground equipment, training materials and spare parts as part of the package, according to BAE and the official Saudi Press Agency. The deal ``will have a significant impact on the qualification of Saudi air crews to be able to use fighter aircraft ... with efficiency and professionalism,’’ an unnamed Saudi defense official told SPA. The official valued the deal at $3 billion.

Riyadh is fortifying its military capabilities to counter a perceived threat from regional rivals, particularly Iran. Late last year, the U.S. finalized the sale of $30 billion worth of F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. That deal included 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more. It was part of an immense $60 billion arms package with Saudi Arabia that includes helicopters, missiles, bombs, radar warning systems and other equipment. The planes in the UK deal will likely be used to train pilots to fly planes Riyadh already has on order. Saudi Arabia signed a deal with Britain in 2007 to buy 72 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, which are partly made by BAE. BAE, Europe’s largest defense contractor, expects the less sophisticated PC-21 planes will begin arriving in 2014. It plans to deliver the first Hawks in 2016.

Overcoming Backbiting and Slander Muslim Voice By Fathiyyah Bashshar

O

ne must see in every human being only that which is worthy of praise. When this is done, one can be a friend to the whole human race. If, however, we look at people from the standpoint of their faults, then being a friend to them is a formidable task. Backbiting refers to speaking in a negative, spiteful, derogatory, or defamatory way about a person who is not present. Even when the words are true, the intent and effect are destructive, creating disunity, whether or not the person spoken of finds out what you said. The Qur’an says, “Woe to the backbiter, even if his tale is true, for the taint is in his motive.” Gossip involves spreading personal or sensational information that may or may not have some basis in truth, but which is often inaccurate or incomplete. The intent and outcome are often harmful. When you know something interesting about another person, it is very tempting to share it with others in order to draw attention to yourself and feel important. Slander, also known as calumny, occurs when you spread clearly false information. This action,

in particular, can damage trust very severely, and it can cause irreparable harm to a relationship between people. Backbiting negatively affects the speaker and the listener, as well as the person who is talked about. The tongue is a smoldering fire, and excess of speech a deadly poison. Material fire consumes the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devours both heart and soul. The force of the former last but for a time, while the effects of the latter endureth a century. Regard backbiting as grievous error, and keep…aloof from its dominion, inasmuch as backbiting quencheth the light of the heart, and extinguishes the life of the soul. (Unknown) So what can we do? And why did you not, when you heard it, say? “It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to God, this is a most serious slander” (Quran 24:16) . Backbiting is commonplace in the work environment. If friends or coworkers start to raise concerns about others to you, either stop them or encourage them to speak in generalities and not in specifics. Being general gives you the opportunity to obtain information directly from the source. You may have to be very firm with others to stop them from backbiting. “The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance of a backbiting tongue.”(Proverbs, 25:23) It can also be helpful to begin sharing something positive about the person under

discussion instead. O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear God, verily, God is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (49: 12) Avoiding backbiting can be difficult, since you may be used to talking through issues and expressing frustrations with close friends, family members, and coworkers. Before you speak, ask yourself whether you will diminish or make “smaller” the person you are speaking about, in the view of the person to whom you are talking. Would the person spoken about dislike and become unhappy about what you are saying? If so, then consider staying quiet. It is better to communicate about issues directly with someone than to speak about others behind their backs. Pollute not your tongues by speaking evil of another. Do not complain of others. Refrain from reprimanding them, and if

you wish to give admonition or advice, let it be offered in such a way that it will not burden the bearer. The goal in any communication is constructive action, not idle or destructive talk. Reflect on your own actions regarding backbiting: When have I seen backbiting, gossip, or slander cause harm? What harm have I caused with backbiting, gossip, or slander? And then commit to using your tongue for encouragement and praise instead.
