Now, let us be your compass as you head out to make your own adventures in this unique place that is both ancient and new. The Driftless is a geologic treasure. As massive glaciers flattened the remainder of the state 25,000 years ago, they curled around southwestern Wisconsin, leaving a plateau of Ordovician era rocks. These sedimentary rocks were formed over 500 million years ago, when southern Wisconsin was a shallow, soggy, inland tropical sea. The sea receded and the seafloor was revealed to be composed not of sand but minerals – in this case calcium-rich dolomites and limestones. Oceans and seas came and went, and a final layer of hard sandstone covered the land. The pancake of hard caprock and softer strata underneath defines the Driftless Area’s topography. The reason you see incised valleys, cliffs, and plateaus is because the sandstone resists erosion, and protects the softer rock underneath. As soon as that sandstone is worn away erosion rapidly cuts down to form a valley. Around the Military Ridge from Mount Horeb to Dodgeville the sandstone is thickest and most prominent. to the creation of the village began in 1849. An Englishman named George Wright gave the town its name in 1861 when, charged with choosing a name for the post office, he decided on the name of the place where the Book of Deuteronomy says God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. When the railroad came to town, it chose a station site farther west than the initial business district and Mount Horeb changed forever. Businesses moved to be closer to the train, creating the Main Street area (known today as the Trollway) that is familiar to residents and visitors alike. In 2020, village leaders are working on a plan that could add a public plaza to the already-bustling downtown, as well. Many of those first European settlers were Scandinavian, and in the ensuing years Mount Horeb has embraced its Nordic heritage and allowed anyone, regardless of their particular heritage, to feel like a Viking. Today, it draws people in with its quirky, whimsical take on Scandinavian mythology. Around every corner, at shops and on public streets, a variety of trolls wait to greet continued on page 14

Peg Ginsberg Watercolor Studio As the world endures and adjusts to life with the coronavirus pandemic, watercolor artist Peg Ginsberg has never been more appreciative of the role art plays—or more anxious to get back to sharing it. “When I first opened my studio eleven years ago, that was a 60-year-old me finally embracing my identity as an artist and deciding I would make a living from it,” says Peg, who’d graduated from Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art and Design in the early 70s and gone on to show her award-winning work in galleries and art fairs, but let three decades slide by before opening her own studio on Main Street Mt. Horeb in 2008. “I didn’t yet know how interactive art really is, and what a vital role other students and artists would play in my life.”
Now she’s never been more sure. Peg and her husband Marc celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this past April, at home, where they’d been in voluntary quarantine since mid-March. As her studio sat closed all spring, Peg missed her students terribly. She missed her customers wandering through, and the look of surprise or delight that would cross their faces when they connected with a particular piece. “When people look at the art work of others it either speaks to them or it doesn’t. If my work speaks to you, that means more to me than I could ever quantify in hours spent at the canvas or the difficult task of attaching dollars to artwork,” says Peg. “Sometimes what you as a patron get out of it is more important than what I as an artist put

into it, and that’s the magic.” Peg’s studio showcases her diverse works – landscapes and waterscapes, both real and imagined; portraits of flowers and inviting gardens; peppers and whimsical vignettes of toy villages – available in original framed and matted paintings, limited edition Giclée prints and blank notecards. She is eager to reopen for both sales and classes, which are small and mixed levels. Instruction is personal and individual, focused on whatever the student is most interested. She believes watercolor is a medium with unlimited potential for exploration and discovery, and urges everyone to give it a try. Basic supplies are available for purchase at the shop if needed. Private lessons are available by appointment. “I think this pandemic has forced us to slow down, to focus on what matters most and to appreciate the beauty in everyday life,” says Peg. “That’s what art has always meant to me, and we need it now more than ever. The future is uncertain but art was here before us and it will outlast us all. To me, that’s a tremendous comfort.” Peg Ginsberg Watercolor Studio is located at 207 E. Main Street in Mount Horeb. McFee on Main When McFee on Main celebrated its third anniversary in October 2019, owner Lynn McFee was proud of the shop’s first three years, she said, but never expected that just a few months later, she’d be bringing home a third Madison Magazine Best of Madison award – this time silver – for best women’s clothing. “When [2017 Best of Madison] voting started we were less than a year old,” McFee said. “I was completely shocked by it, now we’ve been fortunate enough to receive an award for Women’s Clothing three years in a row.” “It really exemplifies what a hidden treasure Mount Horeb is. There is something magical happening here,” she said. “People seek us out because the energy here is contagious.” McFee opened McFee on Main on Mount Horeb’s Main Street after retiring from her role as Senior Director Brand Manager at global fashion brand, Ralph Lauren. After more than 30 years with the company, she was ready to pursue a dream and launch a business in her husband’s native Mount Horeb. “I love Mount Horeb,” she said. “Opening our store has really been a great experience; the community has been very welcoming and supportive.” In 2019, McFee on Main was selected as the Business of the Year by the Mount Horeb Chamber of Commerce.
Featuring clothing for the hip, classic woman of any age, as well as gifts and home décor, McFee on Main is located at the east end of Mount Horeb’s bustling downtown at 400 East Main Street. McFee and her husband, John, purchased the building in the spring of 2015 and transformed what was formerly a cafe into a bright and welcoming retail space.
There’s something magical happening at McFee on Main! This three-year-old boutique is a local and area favorite.

continued from page 4 visitors – to have their photos taken and to inspire tales of northern adventures full of fjord horses, giants, elves and more. There are trolls just about everywhere you look. But while the trolls bring people here, it is an authentic depth and surprising breadth of culture, community and commerce that brings people back over and over again to Mount Horeb. With a growing population of more than 7,000 people, the community is home to painters, potters, playwrights and performers. It is still embedded in the land and in the agriculture that first brought Europeans settlers to the Midwest, and each Thursday afternoon throughout the summer and fall months the downtown enjoys a bountiful farmers market. And don’t worry; even a pandemic can’t stop small farms from growing fresh, delicious food. The Driftless Historium, a vibrant museum and cultural hub that opened its doors just
two years ago, offers a glimpse at Mount Horeb’s past, its present, and even its future. The historic downtown remains quaint – this is a town with only one streetlight, after all – but Mount Horeb really is in the midst of a major development boom. The past and the present are converging here and now in this unique community that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Mount Horeb features several cultural festivals each year. The themes include the changing of seasons, the arts, food and beer. Distinctive shops and antique stores, located in authentic restored buildings and Victorian homes, line Main Street. Recreation is abundant in the Mount Horeb area. Tucked among the deep valleys and farmland of southern Wisconsin, visitors can enjoy camping, fishing, golfing and bowling at the village-owned Norsk Golf Bowl, swimming, and a 39-mile recreational trail great for biking, hiking and jogging. There are locally-brewed stouts and lagers, ales and ports, along with rugged outdoors-wear, homemade art to view and homespun yarns to hear. (There is also

Botham Vineyards Situated in the heart of Wisconsin’s Iowa County Uplands and surrounded by more than 900 acres of nature conservancy, Botham Vineyards & Winery has been growing and producing regionally distinctive wines of international acclaim since 1989. Each of the Botham Vineyards wines is carefully monitored through every laborious step in the vine-to-bottle process. The estate’s 10-acre vineyard, planted in 1989, supplies the winery with premium-quality grapes for use in crafting these wines. Highly acclaimed for their structure and balance, the Botham Vineyards wines have earned hundreds of medals in national and international competition over the last decade. Recognized as Wisconsin Winery of the Year in 2016, its Uplands Reserve was twice named Wisconsin’s Best wine (epicurious.com and purewow.com) and in 2017 the vineyard’s Field 3 was recognized as
“hands down, the best wine in the state” by FoodandWineAesthetics.com. Designed and built as a dairy farm in the early 1900s, the soul of the property has been carefully reclaimed and restored with new purpose. Its gently sloping pastures, once deeply lined with the hoof prints of a half-century’s herds and knotted with rocks and tree stumps, became host to the tranquil symmetry of trellis. The circa-1900 ‘hung’ barn, revered for its beauty and historical significance, was lovingly refurbished and now houses the tasting room, gift shop and two indoor spaces for private and public gatherings. The vast grounds and a large outdoor terrace provide spectacular views in every season and are the ideal backdrop for live music, family gatherings, private and corporate events and a host of special events that are open to the public throughout the late spring, summer and fall. The venue is also an appeal-
ing destination for small rehearsal dinners, bridal and baby showers and celebrations of every kind. This is a family company, founded by winegrower and winemaker Peter Botham, who runs the business with assistance from his wife Sarah, their son Mills, and a staff of warm and welcoming associates passionate about tending the vineyard and pouring, enjoying and sharing the delightful bounty in a great glass of wine. Visitors are welcomed for public and private group tastings, Wednesday through Sunday 10 am – 5 pm from April 1 through December 24. Tours by appointment for groups of 15 or more. Botham Vineyards is located approximately 1.5 miles south of Barneveld and 25 miles southwest of Madison, at the intersection of County K and Langberry Road. To get there, take County Road K south off Highway 18/151 and follow the signs. In 1827, Henry Dodge, his family, and about 40 miners began what would become the city of Dodgeville. Dodge made a pact with the local Winnebago Indian leaders so he could build a cabin and smelter. The original community was made up of three separate settlements: “Dodgeville”, “Dirty Hollow” and “Minersville”. Dodgeville, which was named after Dodge,
grew slowly during its early years. It was incorporated as a village in the 1840s. Later a small “war” was fought with Mineral Point over which community would become the seat of Iowa County. At the time, Mineral Point was the seat, but Dodgeville residents felt they should have it. Dodgeville eventually won the “war” and Wisconsin’s continued on page 17

oldest county courthouse. Dodgeville then saw a population boom, and it became a center for mining. Miners from England flooded the city, and the area flourished. British and Cornish architecture is still visible in the city today. Dodgeville became the largest city in Wisconsin at the time, as well as most of the Midwest north of St. Louis, and west of Cincinnati. The community’s boom didn’t last long though, and with the decline of mining its population was overtaken by rapidly growing cities like Chicago and Milwaukee. Several factors led to the decline in importance of mining, including the Black Hawk War, the California Gold Rush of 1849, the Civil War, and the emergence of farming, leading to Dodgeville’s development as a business and agricultural center. Today the
About the Area The city of Dodgeville is geographically located among sandstone bluffs, steep hills and gently rolling farmlands. The surrounding area is referred to as “unglaciated” because it was untouched by the glaciers that shaped much of the region’s topography. It is also referred to as the “driftless region” because the absence of glaciers meant that no “drift” (or accumulated rock and soil) was left behind. Many people simply refer to this area as the “Uplands.” By any name, it’s no exaggeration to say that the surrounding area is a feast for the eyes with its rugged rock outcroppings, wildflower meadows and prairies, wooded hillsides, lakes and streams, and rolling farmlands.

Participants in a DALC field event traverse prairie in full summer bloom. to you slowly if you open your eyes and ears and set your feet on a path. Abundant publicly accessible land like the Erickson Conservation Area in Argyle, WI and the Bloomfield Prairie near Dodgeville offer visitors quiet respite from the busy world and some of the very finest places to watch migratory birds. In the springtime, warblers, cranes, pelicans and swans make their way here. Monarch butterflies abound as do other important buzzing pollinator species. One of the best ways to watch these creatures or learn more about this region is to find your way to a parks or preserve or to join a field event through one of the various conservation organizations like Driftless Photo by Mary Kay Baum, courtesy of Driftless Area Land Conservancy
Hidden gem. Undiscovered beauty. Magnetic. Welcome to the magnificent Driftless Area! Untouched by glacial forces, this region is characterized by deep cut river valleys, high rock bluffs, rare plant and animal species and a long history of curious, creative and caring human inhabitants. The Driftless region gets its name from the fact that it was not touched by glaciers in the four major periods of glacial activity, the last one which was about 12,000 years ago. By understanding the flow of ice sheets, studying soil samples and geologic aging of soil in areas where glacial deposits or “drift” accumulated scientists have come to understand that the region was unique and lacking drift. Alas, we have the Driftless. All of this glacial activity sat atop the limestone formed by deposited sediment of an ancient seabed. That limestone now gives us abundant karst features: easily dissolved bedrock near the ground surface which leads to springs, sinkholes, caves and losing streams (where surface flowing water is lost to groundwater). This geology and our generally mild climate give us diverse habitat that makes the Driftless a corner of the world unlike anywhere else and one worth taking in slowly, one open meadow or gentle slope at a time. Oak savannas, some of the most important grassland communities in the world, deep hollows, abundant waterways, and the rare algific talus slopes distinguish this region from others nearby and make it a globally important ecosystem, one that is truly found nowhere else on the planet. The magic of this area will reveal itself

Area Land Conservancy (DALC). Now in its 20th season, Driftless Area Land Conservancy hosts field events for residents and visitors, connects land management experts across the region to landowners, and works to protect private land through conservation easements. Easements allow landowners to bestow permanent protection upon their property with the help of the conservancy. By working with landowners, DALC has restored and protected over 7,800 acres of land in southwest Wisconsin. These properties provide habitat for thousands of species of migratory birds, aiding the efforts to steward this place as a haven for wildlife and making it a perfect spot to explore – whether for birding, hiking or paddling. By treading lightly and carving out ways to protect this landscape, the Driftless can remain relatively untouched. Visitors and residents together can leave a lasting legacy of stewardship and care. Learn more about DALC’s public events, how to access Erickson or Bloomfield Prairie or find out how you can contribute to conservation efforts in the Driftless by visiting them at www.driftlessconservancy.org. Historic buildings and homes, constructed during the lead mining boom, and subsequent Cornish immigration to the area, are treasured in their town. And many have been lovingly restored to accommodate modern uses. This preservation of their architectural heritage led to Mineral Point being the first city in Wisconsin listed on the National Register of Historic places. Their boutique hotels are charming and cozy, and their artisan galleries take you to new places. Take a stroll or a drive through town and soak in the charm of 19th century architecture crafted by early residents and restored by modern craftsmen. This is a place to experience small-town life with a creative flair. The arts are integral to their every day lives, and they love sharing
that. There are potters and painters, weavers and woodworkers, print makers and pizza makers, glass artists and jewelry makers, sculptors and musicians, photographers and farmers, and award-winning cheesemakers (On, Wisconsin!). Spend time with the artists in their galleries or studios. Stay the weekend for a class at Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts to nurture your own creative side. Explore speciality shopping at its best…See a show at the beautifully restored Opera House…tour Pendarvis, Orchard Lawn, and the Railroad Depot Museum…dance up a storm with live music…enjoy a meal prepared with local ingredients, and a beer brewed next door…take a walk in the prairie, or a ride on the trail. More than 12,000 years ago, an immense flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of remarkable beauty across Wisconsin leaving behind a variety of unique landscape features, including the Driftless Area in Southwestern Wisconsin which was spared the glacier’s weight. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath that highlights these landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The Trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails. The best place along the Ice Age Trail to see the Driftless Area is in Dane County just west of Cross Plains – the Table Bluff Segment. Another excellent vantage is on the National Park Service property (Ice Age Reserve) along Old Sauk Pass Road, southeast of Cross Plains. The Ice Age Trail began in the 1950s as a dream of Milwaukeean Ray Zillmer, who had a vision of a long, linear park winding through Wisconsin along the glacier’s terminal moraine. The Alliance was established in 1958, and celebrates over 60 years of a vibrant community of volunteers across the state working to build and maintain the Trail, making it one of the country’s best hiking experiences. The Ice Age Trail Alliance office is located right on the Ice Age Trail at 2110 Main Street in downtown Cross Plains. It is generally open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 608-798-4453 for more information.

Bavaria Sausage, Inc. In 1956, master sausage maker Fred Voll and his wife, Kathe, came from Bavaria, Germany, bringing their craftsmanship and oldfashioned values to America. After years of hard work, they were able to save and build a beautiful federally inspected sausage manufacturing plant. Then a beautiful chalet retail store was built for the public to enjoy their authentic sausage. They named it Bavaria Sausage. When you enter Bavaria Sausage, you are transported to Old World Germany, with the largest selection of sausage, cheese and imported grocery items under one roof. They offer a wide variety of German specialty sausages and cheddar aged up to 14 years. European specialty foods, such as candy, chocolates, cakes, breads, coffees, pretzels, snacks, krauts, pickles and fresh cheese curds, line the shelves. They use no artificial colors, flavors, gluten, fillers, additives, preservatives (except
smoked products), or chemicals, and they don’t use MSG in their products. All of their products are made from lean beef and pork, and natural spices that are mixed by hand from bulk spices, then naturally hickory smoked or cooked. Next time you zip along U.S. 151, just west of the intersection with County PD (McKee Road), turn in and visit. If you visit between May and September, weather permitting, Bavaria Sausage has a wonderful brat fry in the parking lot between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. They serve three different kinds of bratwurst, their Old Fashioned Wieners and kraut. Schwoegler’s Sugar River Lanes The Schwoegler family has a long history in bowling. In 1917, the first Schwoegler’s was built in Stoughton, then came the Plaza Lanes in Madison, then the Schwoegler’s on Gilman Street, then Schwoegler’s Nakoma Lanes on the west side, and finally Parktowne Lanes on the far west side. The Schwoegler family took over the former Super Bowl in 1994, and Mark Schwoegler has been the owner and operator ever since. Tony built the first Schwoegler’s. He was also the doubles national champion in 1919. Tony’s sons, Connie and Bill, both built the west side centers and Bill’s son, Mark, is now running the Sugar River Lanes in Belleville. Connie became a world champion bowler in the late 1940s. The Schwoegler family is known for out-
standing service and dedication to bowling. They also enjoy serving up bowling alley burgers and cheesy fries to many of their bowling customers. Bowling is a part of Americana and that’s what you get at Schwoegler’s! Enjoy bowling, bags, volleyball and more at 807 River Street in Belleville. Call 608-4243774 or visit www.sugarriverlanes.com.

By Marian Viney If you follow the many twists and turns of the Sugar River through the hills of southwest Wisconsin as it winds its way to the Pecatonica River in northern Illinois, you will travel more than 90 miles. You will enjoy some of the most scenic places in southern Wisconsin. West of the river, the land elevates and joins what is known as the driftless area, known for its abrupt hills and valleys, covering most of southwest Wisconsin. Starting at the source of the Sugar River, it meanders southeast, through Paoli and Belleville, where it is dammed to form Lake Belle View where residents and visitors alike can enjoy activities such as fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or strolling across the berm for spectacular views. You might even see an eagle or two, great blue herons, and other wildlife. From there, the Sugar River heads east of Monticello where it is joined by the Little Sugar River and flows south through Albany and Brodhead. Along the Sugar River’s path runs the Sugar River State Trail. The bike trail begins in New Glarus and ends in Brodhead. The former railroad line was converted into a 24-mile walking, bicycling, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing trail that is enjoyed by many. The Sugar River Watershed covers almost 760 square miles in south-central Wisconsin and northern Illinois and is divided into three parts. In the Lower Sugar River Watershed alone, there are more than 7,000 acres of restored and protected lands that provide flood protection, wildlife habitat, and water quality benefits in and downstream of the watershed, as well as hunting, fishing, trapping, and other outdoor recreation opportunities.

Broyt Bakehaus & Deli Introducing Broyt Bakehaus at Cow & Quince. Broyt means bread in Yiddish. Their bagels, bakery items, and gluten free bread have always gotten rave reviews so they decided to build on these strengths. They are excited to share this new concept and menu with visitors and community members. The pandemic caused them to re-examine their exclusively dine-in model. Broyt Bakehaus is what they needed to do in this current reality, and they are confident that it still represents what Cow & Quince was known for—support for small, Wisconsin farms and local food artisans. They look forward to the time that all can sit around a table as a community and share a meal. In the meantime, they look forward to seeing you across the counter at Broyt, having a bagel, a sandwich or a sweet treat. And perhaps you will even be able to sit down and stay awhile over a cup of coffee or a cocktail. Broyt Bakehaus & Deli is located at 407 2nd Street in New Glarus. Puempel’s Olde Tavern was established in 1893 by Josef and Bertha Puempel, as a tavern and boarding house. They operated it until 1935, whereupon their son, Otto, took over and operated it for 58 years until 1993, when the current owner, Chuck Bigler, purchased the business. The original back bar, made by the Brunswick Corporation in 1912, still looks proudly over its visitors. The murals on the wall
were painted in 1913 by Albert Struebin, in exchange for his room and board (60 cents per day). It took him six months to complete, painting them from Puempel family postcards. Feel free to look around (and up), throw a dollar on the ceiling (donated to charity) and ask questions. Stop in at 18 6th Avenue, in New Glarus. They will be glad you visited. winery has been a labor of love for owners Todd and Janet since moving to the area in 2015. Bringing along with them their love of people and wine, they left the city behind them, ready to take on an entirely new adventure. They purchased a new home with lots of land and immediately started planting grapes. After three years of cultivating and caring for five grape varietals, they had their first harvest in the fall of 2017. While visiting Bailey’s Run you will have the opportunity to sample over 14 different wines, ranging from sweet whites to dry, oaky reds, even some sparkling wines. Nearly all the wines are made with local (Wisconsin grown) grapes to highlight the flavors of the area. Looking for a snack to go with your wine? Bailey’s Run offers a variety of local meats and cheeses and other seasonal offerings. Spring 2020 will be the debut of our wood fired pizzas. The winery has a giant porch, perfect for gathering with friends, sharing a bottle with your dearest, or simply taking in the beauty of the New Glarus countryside. Bailey’s Run Vineyard and Winery is named after the owners’ friendly Goldendoodle Bailey, who can be found exploring her vineyard to keep it safe from chipmunks, rabbits and squirrels. New Glarus Hotel Restaurant The New Glarus Hotel can help fulfill a hunger for both food and history—it has a rich story that starts all the way back in 1853. There is sometimes confusion about why the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant is called a hotel when it primarily serves guests as a restaurant. The reason is simple: history. The building began its life as a hotel, housing salesmen, travelers, and those awaiting the services of nearby livery stables or harness makers. The hotel’s main dining room was once an old opera house. Traveling stock shows and vaudeville revues were billed often at the old theater. It later featured silent movies, complete with pianists. The first motion picture in the village was shown in the hall in 1922. Talking movies were introduced in 1930. But the stage stood mostly dark and silent from 1950 until 1965. It was then converted into a Swiss-style Yodel Club, complete with restaurant. While yodeling is now mostly reserved for performances, the authentic Swiss-style dining experience still endures. The hotel has known only three generations of owners since it first became a restaurant: Robbie Schneider, Hans

The Bramble Patch Wandering into the Bramble Patch for the first time is an amazing experience. The first thing you notice is their vast collection of vibrant, handmade Polish Pottery. Each piece is literally a work of art, yet they are designed to be used every day because it is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. This is definitely one of the largest collections of Polish Pottery you will ever discover. “Our background is in working with nature and creating the best product possible,” says Carol. “For the past 131 years, our family has been making maple syrup on the same land in North-Central Wisconsin. We have won numerous international awards, and the secret lies in the attention to every little detail, the focus on quality every step of the way, and a lot of dedication. When I find other products that follow that same philosophy, I gladly add them to our store.” In addition to Polish Pottery and maple syrup, you will also find quality local apparel with custom-designed embroidery and artwork; honey, jams, salsas and mustard that are made in Wisconsin; seasonal decor and even a year-round Christmas room.
