Safety first when handling fireworks
Days at the beach. Family trips to the ice cream parlor. Vacations. These are just a few of the things that evoke the spirit of summer, a time of year when school is out and everyone seems to exhale a little and enjoy the warm weather. Awe-inspiring fireworks displays also come to mind when imagining summer. Whether it’s the 4th of July or town gatherings along a local water-
front, fireworks displays are a big part of many people’s summers. Fireworks are always best left to the professionals, and many communities have criminalized the use of fireworks by amateurs. But many people still light fireworks, and those that do should follow these safety precautions. · Never let kids handle fireworks. While they might seem

like harmless symbols of summer, sparklers pose a significant threat to youngsters. · Follow directions. Fireworks come with detailed directions for a reason, and that’s to keep users safe. Strictly adhere to these directions and go over them with anyone who intends to light fireworks. • Never use fireworks indoors. Fireworks are for outdoor use only. If it rains, do not try to light fireworks indoors and then throw them outside before they go off. • Make sure spectators keep a safe distance. Do not light fireworks until all spectators are out of range should something go awry. • Recognize that fireworks are not toys. They might be a marvel, but fireworks are not toys. As a result, they should never be aimed or thrown at another person, nor should they be lit or launched from a body part.
• Do not attempt to reignite malfunctioning fireworks. Attempting to reignite malfunctioning fireworks can lead to serious injury. • Light fireworks on smooth, flat surfaces. When lighting fireworks, do so only on smooth, flat surfaces, making sure to direct them away from people, homes, dry leaves, and flammable materials. Fireworks are a iconic part of summer, but using them should only be done with the utmost caution.

Keep everyone safe while in the water In warm weather, many people seek cooling relief in ponds, rivers, oceans, pools, and other sources of water. Swimming is a popular warm-weather activity, but it can quickly turn deadly if swimmers are not careful in the water. It’s essential that swimmers exercise caution around any body of water. Because water can be unpredictable, it’s always best to swim with a friend. Adults should avoid distractions and alcohol when supervising kids. While most people are familiar with the risks of drowning, they may have heard misinformation about conditions known as dry drowning or secondary drowning. Dry drowning and secondary drowning can occur after a person has exited the water, dry drowning and secondary drowning can occur anytime up to 24 hours after a person stops swimming. Dry drowning occurs when a person, typically a child, inhales water through his or her nose or mouth. This water then triggers a spasm in the airway, causing it to close, and can impact breathing. Secondary drowning happens when swimmers have taken water into the lungs. Summer fun seekers needn’t get overly distressed about dry and secondary drowning. However, the key to preventing any drowning is supervision while in the water and getting prompt medical attention if an aspiration event occurs.

Keep mosquitoes out of your backyard oasis
It’s no surprise that people who look for respite turn their attention to their own backyards to provide such an escape. A backyard retreat can be even more enjoyable when homeowners find ways to keep mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes make their presence felt in many areas each summer. These pesky, often hungry insects can carry disease, and their bites can be painful and itchy. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, who don’t even need a lot of water to successfully breed. A daily walk around the property may uncover kids’ toys, empty flower pots or other small receptacles that can collect water. Even clogged gutters can lead to the accumulation of a small amount of water, and that can be enough for mosquitoes to breed. Remove these potential breeding grounds when you find them, and do so each
day, as mosquitoes mature from eggs to nymphs in roughly four days. Mowing the lawn so the grass never gets too high is another way to make a backyard less hospitable to mosquitoes. Mowing enough so grass never gets too high in summer can make backyards less inviting to mosquitoes. Various plants have mosquito-repellant qualities. For example, bee balm releases a fragrance as it grows, and mosquitoes don’t like that fragrance. Homeowners can speak with a local lawn and garden professional for recommendations about plants that can thrive in their region and repel mosquitoes at the same time. Enjoy your backyard and your summer with less mosquitoes!

Tips for backyard barbecue success
When the weather warms up, the opportunities to enjoy more time outdoors increase. For many people that means firing up the grill to cook dinners in the backyard and also to host friends and family for outdoor gatherings around the patio. Barbecues are especially popular in
spring and summer. Memorial Day often marks the unofficial kickoff to the summer barbecue season. After Memorial Day weekend, the smell of barbecue often can be detected on a nightly basis in suburban neighborhoods. Follow these tips to make backyard barbecues even more successful this year. 1. Make food safety a priority. A successful barbecue is one in which everyone goes home sated and stuffed with delicious foods. Always keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold (place items on ice or in coolers). 2. Learn how to smoke. Grilling is one skill, and smoking is another. Smoked foods take a lot of time to cook, allowing hosts an opportunity to mingle with guests. 3. Keep things simple. Serve only a handful of items to cut down on the amount of preparation required. Chips or other pre-made snacks can fit the bill. 4. Set up clusters of seating. Grouping sets of chairs at tables around the yard encourages guests to mingle. Also, it helps space out people for social distancing and
avoids a bottleneck around the food. Make the most of barbecue season by embracing strategies to be successful hosts and hostesses.

Firewood rules for campfire safety Instead of taking firewood along on your next camping trip, get your firewood where you’re going to use it. Firewood can transport harmful tree problems from yard to campsite. And just one firewood log can easily hide insects like emerald ash borer or gypsy moth, or the tiny spores of a tree-killing fungus like oak wilt. Wisconsin regulates the
movement of firewood in the state to help protect our trees and forests. Property owners and managers may also have additional restrictions. Here are some basic rules: Rules for all of Wisconsin There are two quarantines that regulate the movement of firewood in Wisconsin. As of 2018, the entire state of Wisconsin is quarantined for emerald ash borer (EAB),

which means the quarantine no longer regulates county-tocounty firewood movement in the state. However, movement of firewood is still prohibited from Wisconsin to non-quarantined areas in other states. The quarantine for gypsy moth still prohibits the movement of firewood east to west from infested to non-quarantined WI counties. Rules for State Properties To prevent the spread of emerald ash borer and other invasive insects, the DNR developed a permanent rule which prohibits visitors from bringing firewood into Wisconsin state parks and other state-managed lands from locations further than 10 miles away from the property. Wood from state certified vendors is exempted from this regulation. To help with trip planning, each state campground has a map showing the 10-mile ra-

dius. To help protect the state’s forests from harmful pests and diseases, obtain your firewood from within this 10-mile radius or buy it from a certified vendor. You can purchase firewood in or near almost every Wisconsin state park or forest property. In unstaffed campgrounds or remote campsites, you may find firewood available locally – either for sale in nearby communities or on the property as dead and downed wood. “Firewood Scout” is an online tool for finding firewood retailers by zip code. Other Rules Allowable firewood types: 1) Wisconsin certified firewood, which has been processed to remove harmful hitchhikers. 2) Dimensional lumber, such as 2x4 or 4x6 scraps from a building project, will be allowed on state property upon the discretion of park staff. 3) Firewood that meets fire-

Campfire safety wood regulations described above. Burning pallets is not allowed. Most parks offer quality firewood for sale at reasonable prices by the park’s Friends Group. Proceeds help pay for things like educational programs, buildings and picnic shelters and needed equipment. Private sellers often have firewood for sale just outside of the park as well. Use up the firewood you have at each place on your camping vacation. Do not take it with you to another destination. When buying firewood, make sure the pieces are dry and have either no bark or
bark that is loose (a sign that the wood is very dry). This will reduce the threat of spreading diseases and your fire will be easier to start. Reduce your need for open fire by cooking over gas or charcoal. Instead of an evening campfire, explore new night-time activities like star-gazing or viewing wildlife by flashlight. If you are a camper from outside of Wisconsin, please do not bring firewood with you. If it originated from more than 10 miles from the state campground and isn’t certified, you will have to surrender it before checking into your campsite.

Spend a day on a boat
Few things can be as enjoyable on a warm day as spending some time on a boat. For many people, the sound of the water lapping beneath a boat and the feeling of a warm summer breeze blowing through their hair is the very essence of summer relaxation. Boating appeals to people with varying interests, and there are many ways one can enjoy a day spent traversing a nearby river or lake. Recreational fishing is wildly popular. The sheer volume of people who enjoy recreational fishing suggests it’s an activity that has widespread appeal and it can benefit people of all ages and skill levels. What’s more, fishing provides a wonderful excuse to spend a day on a boat. Sailing is a rewarding and demanding hobby. While sailing can be physically demanding, when the waters are calm, few activities can be as peaceful and relaxing. Of course, even people who do not own their own boats can still enjoy time on the water. Many waterfront communities, particularly those with tourism-based economies, are home to small businesses that provide local river or lake tours and rentals. A day spent on a boat is a great way to enjoy a warm afternoon. And the options are endless when it comes to how to spend such days on the water.
