The people here are eager to share their culture, their food and drink, their friendship, and of course, their story… The tale of this part of Wisconsin stretches back into prehistory, to a time when huge swaths of North America and Eurasia were locked under thick slabs of ice. As a result, the surface landforms are much older than those in the rest of the state, which was shaped by a relatively recent glacier, carving out a land totally continued on page 2

See the sights in New Glarus and take time to enjoy the ‘cow parade’. New Glarus has a picturesque downtown featuring charming architecture and is home to interesting locally-owned shops, as well as many fine bars and restaurants. The Bramble Patch Wandering into The Bramble Patch for the first time is an amazing experience. The first thing you notice is their vast collection of vibrant, handmade Polish Pottery. Each piece is literally a work of art, yet they are designed to be used every day because it is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. This is definitely one of the largest collections of Polish Pottery you will ever discover. “Our background is in working with nature and creating the best product possible,” says Carol. “For the past 132 years, our family has been making maple syrup on the same land in North-Central Wisconsin. We have won numerous international awards, and the secret lies in the attention to every little detail, the focus on quality every step of the way, and a lot of dedication. When we find other products that follow that same philosophy, we gladly add them to our store.” In addition to Polish Pottery and maple syrup, you will also find quality local apparel with custom-designed embroidery and artwork; honey, jams, salsas and mustard that are made in Wisconsin; seasonal décor and a year-round Christmas room. It’s more than you can imagine. Maple tasting is always available. Come see why they have been included in the International Maple Hall of Fame. Puempel’s Olde Tavern Puempel’s Olde Tavern was established in 1893 by Josef and Bertha Puempel, as a tavern and boarding house. The original back bar, made by the Brunswick Corporation in 1912, still looks proudly over its visitors. The murals on the wall were painted in 1913 by Albert Struebin, in exchange for his room and board (60 cents per day). It took him six months to complete, painting them from Puempel family postcards. Feel free to look
around (and up), throw a dollar on the ceiling (donated to charity) and ask questions. Stop in at 18 6th Avenue, in New Glarus. They will be glad you visited. Visit them at www.puempels.com or like them on Facebook.

One of the first things Monticello visitors notice is the welcoming panorama of Lake Montesian – ideal for kayaking and canoeing. A handicap accessible fishing pier and a footbridge to the island make it a family favorite. Kick back, relax, and try your luck at fishing. If fishing is not your thing, check out Montesian Gardens. The community gardening project has handicap-accessible paved walking paths for visitors to enjoy the garden during all seasons, as different flowers and grasses are constantly coming into bloom. Monticello’s Main Street is a neat and tidy downtown district with restaurants, a grocery store, a coffee shop, and several pubs. While you are on Main Street, get a taste of the past at the Monticello Historical Museum, open on Saturdays. If bicycling is your passion, the Badger and Sugar River Trails intersect east of the village. Access over 60 miles of trails right here in Monticello! From the trails, it’s a quick ride downtown where you can try some fresh pie or local flavors like fresh cheese, landjaegers and award-winning summer sausage.
Favorite events in Monticello include the annual “Spring Fling” (third weekend in May), Green County Breakfast on the Farm (last Saturday in May), Washington Reformation UCC Music Fest (July 4), and Homecoming festival (second weekend in July). Monticello’s summer highlight is the annual “Homecoming” Weekend. It is a traditional hometown family favorite. Local groups host food stands with deep fried cheese curds, homemade pie, and fresh-squeezed lemonade. Homecoming weekend also hosts a Fish Boil on Friday evening, fireworks display on Saturday night, and Chicken BBQ on Sunday; along with a parade.
Find canoe races, fireworks, a parade, and much more during Monticello’s Homecoming weekend in July.

By Sue Moen The Village of Monticello lies between Monroe and New Glarus on State Highway 69. From the picturesque Lake Montesian, to the two bike trails and the beautiful Montesian Gardens, Monticello is great place to kick back and enjoy small-town hospitality. Only 30 miles south of Madison, Monticello offers proximity to the city and the peace and wonders of the country. There are great places downtown to grab something to eat or enjoy a beverage, along with three nearby cheese factories that offer samples of their award-winning cheeses. The Sugar River Trail and Badger Trail intersect just east of the village, making biking easy and a great way to enjoy wildlife and natural areas nearby. In July, true small-town flavor is celebrated with the Monticello Homecoming. Softball, volleyball, canoe races (the only rule is there is no rules), Tug O War, and many other activities await. Then there’s the food: enjoy pies ... so many pies, and the Lions Club’s famous hand-dipped deep fried cheese curds, as well as lots of other tasty treats. On Saturday night the sky lights up with fireworks! Sunday afternoon’s parade is a picturesque celebration of life in a small town. Monticello offers a welcome to the place where there is a feeling of home, no matter where you hail from.

Farmer-led efforts along the Upper Sugar River Watershed in the Driftless area By Marian Viney
Educating and growing relationships with farmers and landowners has proven to be a success in achieving conservation efforts in the Upper Sugar River Watershed, which is in the southeast corner of the Driftless Area.
A handful of dirt was coming to life 24 hours after snow cover was removed and the soil was warming up.

The Upper Sugar River Watershed covers about 110,000 acres in the Madison to Belleville area. “Although the watershed is mainly rural, with more than 50 percent of the land used for agriculture, it also includes urban areas,” explained Wade Moder, Executive Director of the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association. In addition to working with farmers, Moder notes streambank erosion as a focus of the association, because as the soil is loosened along the streambank,
more nutrients such as phosphorus leach out of the soil, which in turn affects water quality. Years ago, one local farmer decided to learn everything he could and to pursue efforts in land conservation. He conducted a two-year streambank project with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, which captured the attention of Upper Sugar River Watershed Association staff while canoeing and collecting vegetation data. The farmer later attended one of the watershed association’s meetings and left as a farmer representative to the watershed board. “The farmer talked to us about the challenges with working with agriculture, but he wanted to ‘plant the seed’ about conservation and the possibilities if we worked together,” said Moder. At about the same time the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection was investigating farmer-led watershed groups and offering grants for conservation efforts. During the first year, 14 producer-led groups submitted applications totaling more than $242,000. The Farmers for the Upper Sugar River Group was one of the initial 14 producer-led groups to receive funds and it needed a fiscal agent so the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association agreed to serve. Now, the Farmers for the Upper Sugar River Group has more than 50 members who are continuing to learn about cover crops, grass strips along stream banks and waterways, no-till options and other practices that aid in enhancing water quality
For two-years a local farmer worked with the Natural Resources Conservation Service on a streambank project. 18

A farmer, conservationist and crop consultant examine the soil for active biological processes waiting for solar radiation to begin. and reduce soil erosion, along with protecting and conserving our watershed for future generations. “It’s developed into an incredible partnership,” said Moder. With funding from DATCP’s grant program farmers have experimented with winter rye, winter barley, winter wheat, radish, berseem clover, oats, barley, rapeseed, and cowpeas as cover crops. Recently, the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association hosted a field day and discussed cover crops and demonstrated no-till roll crimp cropping. The groups are fortunate to live near UW-Madison and to work with UW Extension and the experts on staff and to have other resources nearby. “If we work together for water quality, we will continue to make a difference and build even more relationships,” added Moder. The Upper Sugar River Watershed Association will host its annual Sugar River Ramble, Aug. 22, 2021, which is a biking and paddling event based in Mount Horeb. “Attendees can enjoy the bike routes throughout the watershed in the Driftless Area and paddle the Sugar River,” said Moder. “Members of the Association will highlight some of the landmarks along the bike trails and explain what makes the Sugar River a great paddling destination.” For more information, pleases visit www. uppersugar.org and www.uppersugar.org/ farmers.

Bavaria Sausage, Inc. In 1956, master sausage maker Fred Voll and his wife, Kathe, came from Bavaria, Germany, bringing their craftsmanship and oldfashioned values to America. After years of hard work, they were able to save and build a beautiful federally inspected sausage manufacturing plant. Then a beautiful chalet retail store was built for the public to enjoy their authentic sausage. They named it Bavaria Sausage. When you enter Bavaria Sausage, you are transported to Old World Germany, with the largest selection of sausage, cheese and imported grocery items under one roof. They offer a wide variety of German specialty
sausages and cheddar aged up to 14 years. European specialty foods, such as candy, chocolates, cakes, breads, coffees, pretzels, snacks, krauts, pickles and fresh cheese curds, line the shelves. They use no artificial colors, flavors, gluten, fillers, additives, preservatives (except smoked products), or chemicals, and they don’t use MSG in their products. All of their products are made from lean beef and pork, and natural spices that are mixed by hand from bulk spices, then naturally hickory smoked or cooked. Next time you zip along U.S. 151, just west of the intersection with County PD (McKee
Road), turn in and visit. If you visit between May and September, weather permitting, Bavaria Sausage has a wonderful brat fry in the parking lot between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. They serve three different kinds of bratwurst, their Old Fashioned Wieners and kraut. They look forward to serving you with their finest German hospitality, whether online in their internet shop or visiting their brick and mortar store, they would like to make your “Old World Germany” experience a memorable one. Gemplers’ new store in Mount Horeb gives outdoor pros and enthusiasts one more way to shop Gemplers’ selection of hard-to-find, professional-grade tools, equipment and gear. Whether you’re working outdoors in gardens, greenhouses and farm fields, or tackling rugged trails and camping this summer, add this stop to your summer bucket list. You’ll get a complimentary wave of nostalgia with every trip. A 1950s vintage Coke machine stands near the Gemplers’ “Tool Shed”, stocked with favorites like Felco, Hickok, CAT and DeWalt. Shoppers are even thanked for their purchase with a Coke from the vending machine, on Gemplers’ dime. “We offer some of the best-loved brands

We also love introducing folks to new problem-solving products.” These problem-solvers include the unbreakable King of Spades, that helps landscapers cut through compacted soil like butter and self-sharpens as you use it for smarter digging with less frustration. Gemplers’ Liquid Rust Converter reacts with rust and restores farm and home equipment without breaking a sweat, to extend the life of your machinery and save money. Mount Horeb is the ideal destination with its abundance of small boutiques, charming sights and delicious eateries. Peg Ginsberg Watercolor Studio As the world endures and adjusts to life with the Coronavirus pandemic, watercolor artist Peg Ginsberg has never been more appreciative of the role art plays. The studio first opened on Main Street Mount Horeb in 2008. The changes brought by the pandemic also brought the opportunity to move a few doors down to a larger more open space in the same building. Peg, who attended Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art and Design in
the early 70s went on to show her awardwinning work in galleries and art fairs, but let three decades slide by before opening her own studio. “I didn’t yet know how interactive art really is, and what a vital role other students and artists would play in my life.” Now she’s never been more sure. Peg and her husband Marc, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past April at home, where they’d been in voluntary quar-

antine since mid-March of 2020 when the pandemic began. As her studio sat closed all last spring and summer, Peg spent the time painting outdoors and enjoying home, but missed her students and her customers wandering through, and the look of surprise or delight that would cross their faces when they connected with a particular piece. But then the opportunity came to move into a bigger, brighter space, which reopened the opportunity to hold some limited time indoors, but also to restructure the way classes and gallery time could unfold. Peg’s studio showcases her diverse works – landscapes and waterscapes, both real and imagined; portraits of flowers and inviting gardens; peppers and whimsical vignettes of toy villages – available in original framed and matted paintings, limited edition Giclée prints and blank notecards. Peg Ginsberg Watercolor Studio is now located at 205 E. Main Street, in Mount Horeb. McFee on Main When McFee on Main celebrated its fourth anniversary in October 2020, owner Lynn McFee was proud of the shop’s first four years, she said, but never expected that she’d have brought a number of consecutive Madison Magazine Best of Madison awards for best women’s clothing. “When [2017 Best of Madison] vot-
ing started we were less than a year old,” McFee said. “I was completely shocked by it, now we’ve been fortunate enough to receive awards years in a row.” “It really exemplifies what a hidden treasure Mount Horeb is. There is something magical happening here,” she said. “People seek us out because the energy here is contagious.”

McFee opened McFee on Main on Mount Horeb’s Main Street after retiring from her role as senior director brand manager at global fashion brand, Ralph Lauren. After more than 30 years with the company, she was ready to pursue a dream and launch a business in Mount Horeb. “I love Mount Horeb,” she said. “Opening our store has really been a great experience; the community has been very welcoming and supportive.” In 2019, McFee on Main was selected as the Business of the Year by the Mount Horeb Chamber of Commerce. Featuring clothing for the hip, classic woman of any age, as well as gifts and home décor, McFee on Main is located at the east end of Mount Horeb’s bustling downtown at 400 East Main Street. McFee and her husband, John, purchased the building in the spring of 2015, and transformed what was formerly a cafe into a bright and welcoming retail space.

Reserve was twice named Wisconsin’s Best wine (epicurious.com and purewow.com) and in 2017 the vineyard’s Field 3 was recognized as “hands down, the best wine in the state” by FoodandWineAesthetics.com. Designed and built as a dairy farm in the early 1900s, the soul of the property was carefully reclaimed and restored with new purpose. Its gently sloping pastures, once deeply lined with the hoof prints of a halfcentury’s herds and knotted with rocks and tree stumps, became host to the tranquil symmetry of trellis. The circa-1900 ‘hung’ barn, revered for its beauty and historical significance, was lovingly refurbished, is now host to the tasting room, gift shop and indoor spaces for private and public gatherings. The vast grounds and a large outdoor terrace provide spectacular views in every season and are the ideal backdrop for live music, family gatherings, private and corporate events and a host of special events that are open to the public throughout the late spring, summer and fall. The venue is also a popular destination for rehearsal dinners, bridal and baby showers and
celebrations of every kind. This is a family company, founded by winegrower and winemaker Peter Botham, who runs the business with assistance from his wife, Sarah, their son, Mills, and a staff of warm and welcoming associates passionate about tending the vineyard and pouring, enjoying and sharing the delightful bounty in a great glass of wine. Visitors are welcomed for public and private group tastings, 10 am-5 pm on weekends in March and April, with expanded hours beginning May 1 (visit bothamvineyards.com for updates). The tasting room remains open through December 24. Tours are offered by appointment for groups of 15 or more. Botham Vineyards is located approximately 1.5 miles south of Barneveld and 25 miles southwest of Madison, at the intersection of County K and Langberry Road. To get there, take County Road K south off Highway 18/151 and follow the signs. Dodge made a pact with the local Winnebago Indian leaders so he could build a cabin and smelter. The original community was made up of three separate settlements: “Dodgeville”, “Dirty Hollow” and “Minersville”. Dodgeville, which was named after Dodge,

grew slowly during its early years. It was incorporated as a village in the 1840s. Later a small “war” was fought with Mineral Point over which community would become the seat of Iowa County. At the time, Mineral Point was the seat, but Dodgeville residents felt they should have it. Dodgeville eventually won the “war” and Wisconsin’s oldest county courthouse. Dodgeville then saw a population boom, and it became a center for mining. Miners from England flooded the city, and the area flourished. British and Cornish architecture is still visible in the city today. Dodgeville became the largest city in Wisconsin at the time, as well as most of the Midwest north of St. Louis, and west of Cincinnati. The community’s boom didn’t last long though, and with the decline of mining its population was overtaken by rapidly growing cities

Several factors led to the decline in importance of mining, including the Black Hawk War, the California Gold Rush of 1849, the Civil War, and the emergence of farming, leading to Dodgeville’s development as a business and agricultural center. The catalyst for Live Edge Solutions (the business arm of “On the Edge” gallery) was an intense summer storm in 2016 that ripped through the Driftless in Southwest Wisconsin. One hundred mile per hour straight-line winds snapped trees in half and knocked down 75-year-old cherry and oak trees, all wanting another chance to live on and showcase their beauty. Owners John and Ann rescued the logs and starting milling boards. The vision of Live Edge Solutions began to take hold. They founded Live Edge Solutions in the spring of 2020, and in December opened their gallery, “On the Edge”, to share these wonders of nature and provide handcrafted wood products for everyday use. Their products are produced from rescued trees retrieved from their 30-acre family forest in the Driftless region. No two products are alike. Care is taken to reveal the natural beauty of each piece of wood,
and so-called imperfections are celebrated. The history of the log remains intact, be it beetle holes, fungal spalting, or small knots left hollow. Each board is its own work of art, revealing the unique beauty that can only come from Mother Nature. Check out their website at: LiveEdge.Solutions and then visit them at 237 High Street.

Alfred Art to Wear
Arthur’s Supper Club in Spring Green has been a staple in the fine tradition of Wisconsin supper clubs since 1968. Called “The Place for Steaks” the restaurant also features seafood and more. Wednesday’s special is a broasted chicken and ribs special, with lasagna served with garlic toast as the special Thursdays. The Friday Night Fish Fry is a classic Wisconsin tradition. Saturday and Sunday prime rib is a favorite. A lobster lover’s feast is served the fourth Wednesday of each month. Holiday specials are also regularly planned such as the annual Easter lunch featuring turkey and ham. There are appetizers galore, soup and salads, sandwiches, pork chops, chicken and pasta dishes with vegetarian options. The spacious bar features classic cocktails and handmade ice cream drinks such as Grasshoppers and Brandy Alexanders. In
addition to the dining rooms, Arthur’s has a banquet facility that includes a private bar, dance floor, private restrooms and entrance. A drive-through window offers another dining option. Located at E4885 Highway 14 in beautiful Spring Green, the restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4:30 to 8:30 pm for dinner with the lounge open from 4 pm to closing. Shopping can still be extraordinary! The Royal Arcade in London, Avenue Montaigne in Paris or Via della Spiga in Milan are certainly venues of exceptional fashion. However, one need not travel so far to experience equal quality. 159 N. Lexington St. in downtown Spring Green is where you will find ‘Alfred Art to Wear’. Fiber artist Dennis Alfred Phillips designs and constructs garments to treasure. His bespoke, fully fashioned, one-of-akind knits incorporate rich colors, exquisite texture born from his highly skilled craftsmanship. You are welcome to come visit Alfred’s working studio and gallery of his creations along with items from six other local artists. Be sure to check out their website for a photo gallery, details and schedule of hours: www.alfredarttowear.com; or find them on Facebook @alfredarttowear. With bluffs soaring high above the Black Earth Creek valley floor, Festge Park is home to a rare bur oak savanna, hickory-covered hills, and remnant prairies. Step into a sanctuary full of colors, light, and shadows, where creatures awake to the vibrations and whispers of the forest. Come experience a place where joy, inspiration, and discovery await you. Nearby Salmo Pond is adjacent to the Black Earth Creek, south of US Hwy. 14, and offers shoreline fishing, an accessible fishing pier and picnic areas. 52

find out why the National Mustard Museum is consistently named one of Wisconsin’s top ten museums! But, unlike most museums, it’s not all ‘look-don’t-touch.’ You can taste hundreds of exotic mustards at their Ultimate Mustard Tasting Bar, where the Confidential Condiment Counselors find the perfect mustards for your life-style and personality. You’ll find gift sets, fun souvenirs and more to fill your cart at this gourmet shop! A broad selection of BBQ and finishing sauces, jams and jellies, oils and vinegars and other culinary delights are available to sample and purchase. The National Mustard Museum is located in the heart of downtown Middleton, bordering Madison to the west, a 45-minute drive from the Wisconsin Dells, 1-1/2 hours from Dubuque, and 6,798 kilometers from Dijon, France. www.mustardmuseum.com
At 483 acres, Indian Lake is one of Dane County’s largest parks. The main entrance to Indian Lake County Park is located in the Town of Berry on State Hwy. 19, about two miles west of US Hwy. 12. A winding trail leads to a historic chapel built in 1857, located on a hilltop that provides a breathtaking view of the lake and surrounding valley.

Is there really a museum dedicated to mustard? Absolutely! The National Mustard Museum in Middleton is home to the world’s largest collection of mustards (more than 6,000) and mustard memorabilia. Come
Ice Age Trail Alliance More than 12,000 years ago, an immense flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of remarkable beauty across Wisconsin leaving behind a variety of unique landscape features, including the Driftless Area in Southwestern Wisconsin which was spared the glacier’s weight. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath that highlights these landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The Trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails. The best place along the Ice Age Trail to see the Driftless Area is in Dane County just west of Cross Plains – the Table Bluff Segment. Another excellent vantage is on the National Park Service property (Ice Age Reserve) along Old Sauk Pass Road, southeast of Cross Plains. The Ice Age Trail began in the 1950s as a dream of Milwaukeean Ray Zillmer, who had a vision of a long, linear park winding through Wisconsin along the glacier’s terminal moraine. The Alliance was established in 1958, and celebrates over 60 years of a vibrant community of volunteers across the state working to build and maintain the Trail, making it one of the country’s best hiking experiences. The Ice Age Trail Alliance office is located right on the Ice Age Trail at 2110 Main Street in downtown Cross Plains. It is generally open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Call 608-798-4453 for more information.
