“Where it is always about good news!”

Tsunami Takes Over Tomball By Brenda A. Graff

The Mustard Seed Kitchen is a little treasure hidden away in Tomball. Zeke Ramirez, and Judy Bergin had a mustard seed of faith and then some to open up this delightful restaurant. Both had known each other for many years, and worked in the restaurant / catering business. The opportunity came one day as a surprise, and much answered prayer when the former owner of their establishment decided to close down, re-birthing a new restaurant that has blessed many in our community.

In this Issue: The Mustard Seed Kitchen The Book of Clifford Families Feeding Families Holiday Lamp Post Stroll in Tomball Winners Tomball Memorial High Student, Emily Klemm, shares her take on tackling tough competitions

Judy Bergin, Co-Owner and 59 year old Mother of four, ages 30-36, worked the fast-food industry for ten years. She moved from Michigan in 1982 establishing roots in Spring, Texas. Her love of baking for over thirty years developed exquisite recipes proving remarkable results in the catering and custom cake business. There is no mistaking that this creative Chef was inbred with the genetics of good cooking! Her mom, Virginia Arends, was a substitute Chef on cooking shows in the 1950’s. She believes that when you take the steps to work towards your purpose as God has called you to, then what you do will be successful. Zeke, Co-Owner, and a 54 year old father of 4, ages 12-32 has had his share of hard work. His experience started as a small boy at age 9 when his mother had to work two jobs to support the family. He was in charge of feeding his siblings and preparing meals while she worked, and rested. Little did he

know that this tedious preparation of a family meal was preparing him to feed hundreds, perhaps thousands one day. He developed a passion for creating new dishes. I asked Zeke, “Why cooking? What is it about this oftentimes tiresome work that keeps you captivated to continue?” He smiled, and said… “It’s peace…I am most at peace when I am in the kitchen.” I am sure there are many out there shaking their heads… “What?” Like most of us busy moms we probably find our kitchen the most chaotic scene in the house. I know that’s how I end up eating at restaurants much of the time, to escape the doom room as I call it. Zeke, a former Chef at Brio Tuscan Grill, The Woodlands takes his menu making very seriously. This incredible “chef de cuisine”, is at heart a (meat and potatoes) man. When he started The Mustard Seed Kitchen, he figured that because he loved meat and potatoes so did everyone else. He knew his restaurant location would draw in many women...so he focused on salads at first. Then realized that there were plenty of women that love meat and potatoes too, but designed in a more delicate way. The panini way! He has me sold out! I had never had a panini before much less knew how to spell it. When I tasted their Roast Beef Panini with Au jus, I was speechless because I couldn’t stop shoving it in my mouth! It was incredible! So good I had to go back for more the next day. Their salads are also delec-

table. These are no ordinary bowls of tossed lettuce. Every morsel in your mouth is an adventure the taste that melds together creating a ‘party in your tummy’...as my kids use to say. From the homemade dressings, to the crafted croutons, you can’t go wrong on the salad. Zeke and Judy not only have a passion for serving up palatable plates, but they are passionate about people. They kept former employees from previous owner, Erendira, and Cindy, and treat them like their own family. When you walk in this place... you feel peace. It’s an at-

mosphere that is unexplainable. There is no trick lighting, incense burning, or decorative details that set an ambiance. It is a building with wooden tables, and chairs, and a bare concrete floor neatly painted, with a few wall hangings, a huge clock, and simple drink dispensers. I believe that the peace and invisible ambience is the only kind that is experienced from being in a presence of the Peace-Maker. Zeke, and Judy’s gifts and passion come from a higher calling... The Prince of Peace. The Mustard Seed Kitchen is contagious. One smile, one word of hope, one taste of God’s goodness...that seed soon becomes a tsunami of FAITH...the kind that keep you coming back for more.

“I think faith is the small mustard seed of opportunities every day. For example, 'Am I going to love this person? Am I going to share my faith with this person? Am I going to pray that little prayer?' It really is a daily thing where you seize those little mustard seed opportunities and then see what God does.” -Mark Batterson

“Faith is the avenue to salvation. Not intellectual understanding. Not money. Not your works. Just simple faith. How much faith? The faith of a mustard seed, so small you can hardly see it. But if you will put that little faith in the person of Jesus, your life will be changed. He will come with supernatural power into your heart. It can happen to you.” -Billy Graham

A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER Seasons come and go, and depending on your climate, you might experience a longer one than usual. The same goes for our spiritual seasons. You might be experiencing times where you live on a mountain top, and then suddenly here comes a strong wind of change to knock you to the valley.

Brenda A. Graff Publisher / Editor / News Reporter

The purpose of The Anchor Newspaper is to celebrate the good news of our communities and surrounding areas. It is to share experiences from real people who desire to inspire, and ignite a passion for purpose.

Life has many seasons. Just as the leaves change colors in fall, flowers fade, and branches become bare, some situations and relationships diminish. Yet, what happens when winter begins to withdraw its bitter sting? Seedlings begin to emerge, sprouting hope, life, and beauty as spring awakens with a breath of sweet change. We once again experience a season of belief, a reason to keep hoping. “In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.” -William Blake We have to prepare for those seasons when life thunders in unexpected circumstances. To do so would be to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), as our fight is not against flesh and blood, but a spiritual warfare. We cannot always predict the weather, especially if you live in Texas! It's freezing one day, and a sauna the next. However, in preparation for these seasons of change by planting the seed of God's word in you, harvesting what's learned, putting to action knowledge, you can survive the seasons.

The Book of Clifford... Well folks, I'm back! It's been a while since any of you have seen my articles in newsprint. Life has changed for me quite a bit since I've last been in the newspaper. I have shared stories with you over the years about activities of my own life and about those of my friends as well as bull corn historical facts about Tomball and the surrounding areas in Magnolia, Waller and even Brenham. I've given you the ups and downs of construction stories. I've given you my mishaps while working with my cattle and I've told you stories about my family and friends and now I'm here once again to do the same thing. In addition I will hopefully bring a smile to your face and a little laughter in your life. I have always enjoyed writing but I lost my format when the former newspaper closed their doors. I guess I scared off the other newspaper in town when they contacted me and I told him that I wanted $20 a week for writing instead of my normal $10! But now, by the hand of God, this new paper came out and on a whim and I contacted the

editor and asked her about running my stories. She had read my articles from years past and was very excited about having me represented in their paper so here I am once again being Clifford. I look forward to sharing with all my faithful readers new stories and old stories but this time it's gonna be a little different. I actually have sponsors! People that are actually allowing me to associate their name with my stories! Can you believe it! Most people want to turn their head and run when they find out who I am. My mother, prior to her passing, always had difficulty with some people in town. Some of the folks that would meet her and realize she was my mom would immediately greet her with laughter and a hearty handshake and tell her how much they enjoyed my stories. On the other hand, other people would look at her and kinda back up a little bit wondering if she was as short in the head as much as her son seems to be sometimes. But of course she still loved me and things were always good for her when they found out she was sane. Life has been up and down recently for me personally. I have had some health issues that required me to be out for several weeks but the doctors have given me a clean bill of health and I’m back to creating chaos and havoc on many of the things I touch. It’s not a bad as it

used to be however because I have finally gotten my privileges back at church and I am now allowed to do a few handyman things around the property. If this is your first time of reading From the Book of Clifford you may not understand why I lost those privileges many years ago but as I relate my old stories, you will develop a clear understanding. The Book of Clifford is alive again and life will continue to fill me with stories as I begin the process of bringing my life up-to-date for the masses and reminisce about the old things. I hope you look forward to reading From the Book of Clifford.

A Bird's-Eye View It is amazing how we can go through life so busy that we lose sight of people, places, and things in our environments. Our focus is merely on reaching a point of destination within a certain time frame, speeding right past the roses that we fail to stop and smell much less water, leaving only shards of petals on wilting stems. How did we get so crazy busy? What are we all rushing about for? I thought of this one morning as I was rushing out my own door to head to work. I open my door to see our area had been hit with heavy fog, and regretting that I had not gotten up earlier. As I drove down the road with daughter in tow, I began to pray for our safety. You couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of you. I was navigating with near zero visibility and with other vehicles having no headlights on. This made it especially worrisome travel. I must be at my job before the sun rises. I was forced to slow down and risk being late. I don’t do late. This caused me to be a little anxious racing to get into a parking spot, to time clock, grabbing my gear, and heading to my ride to hit the road again. I am a school bus driver. I must be on time to gather the students to deliver to their schools on time. Everything hinges on my action or inaction, and safety skills in the morning, and afternoons. I felt my heart racing that morning, exhausting myself nearly into panting mode as if I had just run a marathon, only to be on time! I didn’t like that feeling. Call me a type A personality or predictable and boring if you must, but I like to be prepared for all situations. I am just that girl. I enjoy knowing I have an organized plan for my day, which by the way…. RARELY happens! I’ve spent most of my life living in the unknown. Never knowing what to expect. However, there is always a plan B, C, D, E, F… of scenarios prepared and stored in my brain always in case ‘Plan A’ fails and so forth. I’m sure a psychologist would have fun breaking that one down. I know that I live a ‘flight or fight’ mode most of the time. I am having to learn to relax, be at ease, not disease! As I get older, am finding that there are just some things not worth trying to conquer. I no longer am trying to change anyone but MYSELF! Whew what a relief! I spent years exhaustively trying to conquer that quest…fighting this cause and that cause, and suffering relationships… and who was I trying to change you may ask? Anyone and everyone who didn’t believe the way I believed. I finally realized that God was doing perfectly good on His own with His creation, and didn’t need my assistance. I realized that I am here as a tool for Him but only to be used in His will not my opinion. If we could all grab that concept we would get along so much better. I am finding that getting along is getting much harder these days in our society. There are a lot of angry folks functioning in this crazy race of life rushing to work, soccer games, grocery stores, banks, doctor offices, etc.…I see it every day from the bird's-eye view of my bus as I sit in heavy traffic on the feeder roads of the freeway watching near death experiences from roadragers, tail-gating texters, and distracted drivers. All the while I am wishing I have a bull horn to scream out, “SLOW DOWN!” I am stuck for many hours throughout my week at traffic lights where I see quite a bit going on. I see the teen disagreeing with dad in a car, the couple quarreling, the baby crying, the worker scarfing their lunch racing through the stoplight, the coffee spiller, the face painter plowing through caution lights while applying mascara. However, I also get to perceive the sadness in the eyes of a driver who is waiting on the light to turn green, or is possibly waiting for the green light in life to live. I see the worn-down faces of the weary waiting patiently to get home after what may have been an excruciating day for them. Did they come from a funeral? Or perhaps caring for a long-term ill loved one. Did they just lose their job? Have they pulled double-shift? Often, I witness the distraught damsel driving with children in tow probably wondering how she’s going to make rent this month or feed her kids this week. One day I got to see a homeless Veteran with a shopping cart carrying all his belongings across the busy roadway nearly missing a direct hit as he limped his way to a spot to rest. My heart broke, as tears blurred my view just enough for the light to turn so I could go, I became bitterly angry as I thought how this man must have fought for our freedom at one time to end up like this. I drove past a few more on street corners begging for their bread for the day possibly the posers that never served in the military, or became mentally ill, or lost their homes due to irrevocable circumstances and I became disturbed. But who’s to say? It isn’t my judgement call. I just give as the Lord directs. The bus I drive has no radio, or A/C for that matter. The only sound I hear is the roar of the century old engine, and the rattling of the doors barely hanging on their hinges “clack…clack…clack” with each bump in the road. I spend more than half my day on the bus. This gives me plenty of one on one time with God. -Cont’d page 6

-Birds-Eye View cont’d

As I viewed these images that broke my heart or cause me to feel the injustice of it all, I began to ask God why He would allow me to feel this pain as if it were me personally. I genuinely hurt for that Vet, that driver I see distraught, the impatient mother ranting at the child…. “Lord, I don’t want to feel it” “Lord I don’t want to see it”, I pleaded. “Jesus, Do something”. I wanted to see something good, something I could find beauty in. I know there is pain in this world, it is shoved in our faces through social media, news, radio, and on our streets EVERY DAY! I don’t want to focus on that. I’m worn out mentally from all the negativity before noon of the day. As I approached my second shift, I prayed asking for God to show me Him. Once back in traffic I experienced the same race-car drivers dangerously darting in front of my bus with no signal. It was the same impatient ones, who apparently don’t care to live or how someone dies…. cars honking at my long yellow obstacle in the road because I can’t cross a medium with a semi running towards me at warp speed with a load of students. It’s enough to make you hang your keys up permanently, and commence to walking everywhere, but then you would have to worry about being run over. However, that evening as I was heading on last route, I noticed up on a wire hundreds of birds gathered. A group would swoop to the ground and snatch a worm, and fly back up, and then the next group would commence to follow, and so forth. There was unique rhythm as they would swoop with such grace and grandeur, it was a majestic mid-air dance to watch. So much so, I suddenly felt the presence of God, it overwhelmed me as I was reminded of this verse. Matthew 6:25-26 The Message (MSG) “If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

These birds were not given a map or a manual on how to gather their food to feast. They were not choreographed to fly musically, swaying together in a motion so majestically flawless, free, and unfettered. They weren’t running into each other hen pecking their way fighting to get the worm…and no one was flipping a bird for being cut-off in traffic. Oh, no, instead they were created to clearly see with a unique ‘bird’s-eye’ view the hand that feeds them, the one who created all living things including their meal moving about under the soil in which we were created from. They follow the rhythm of the heartbeat of their maker, our God. They swarm to safety in the shelter of His majestic wings without a care, without a worry. These birds migrate together flocking and staging themselves high on a wire safe from predators, close knit together to protect themselves as they prepare to eat, travel, swoop, and swarm in a dance that only our Dear Heavenly Father could have taught them. Did I tell you? I saw Him, I saw God…. I witnessed His beauty, His magnificence, His omnipotence, through watching those birds in action, but mostly I witnessed and experienced His LOVE as I realized how much He does love us…ALL His creation! He reminded me that despite what I may witness in this world. I must keep that ‘bird’s-eye’ view from the bus to keep His perspective on people, places, and ALL living things. And the pain and injustice I feel for these folks when I see it, is because it is what our Heavenly Father feels, and has planted in me. To remove it would be to remove His heart, His truth, and His love from my being. The being created to comfort those who are in affliction, to bind up the broken-hearted, tenderly whisper His love and display His desire for all mankind, to reach out, touch, and bring glory to His kingdom. To not see the pain would be painfully unjust. We should hurt for our fellow man or women, our children, and our society. If we who are created in Christ cannot, then we are nothing more than an empty vessel wasting our days on this God given journey in life. We need a ‘bird’s-eye’ view not only for the perspective of pain but to pry open the purpose God has instilled in us, to see how His heart beats for us and through us. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Cor 1:3-4)

Her parents Robert and Ashley Klemm must be very proud of this bright example to all youth. She has the making of a leader that not only has made a difference, but will be difference making for many years to come. - Brenda A. Graff

Jed Ragsdale Director of Choral Activities, AP Music Theory

One day during class my director, Mr. Jed Ragsdale, Director of Choral Activities, AP Music Theory, pulled me aside and asked if I would be interested in singing in the honor choir for the region weekend. I accepted the offer, got my music and started to practice it. The music was challenging, but with the help of the director the choir as a whole was able to understand and learn the piece easier. I learned four pieces in the course of two days. The All-State process can be stressful but my advice to the other

WE KNOW POOLS! DK Pools opened its doors in September 2008. In the wake of Hurricane Ike, David Lear, together with his closest friends and family, took the opportunity to help a community in need. We provided free cleanup and haul away of the massive amounts of debris left by the hurricane. It was during this time that David saw a need for a "human" service company. A company that doesn't operate solely for its own profit and gain. Instead he envisioned a service company that actually cares for each individual customer and the community as a whole. DK Pools is a family owned and operated company. Together, with over 18 years of experience in the pool industry, we have proudly served Magnolia and surrounding areas for over 9 years. DK Pools does everything from maintain your swimming pool weekly to large renovation projects and most everything in between. Our professionalism and quality of work is second to none! "David and all the guys at DK Pools are the best, they do excellent work, couldn't ask for a better team! Thanks guys!" ~Willie C
