WELCOME
brighter horizons Our cover image sees a loved-up couple on a Cornish clifftop. The ancient, moss-cloaked cliffs; the green-blue sweep of ocean; the coastline curling into the distance – it is a scene that positively screams ‘Cornwall’. There’s something wild, free and wonderful about this perfect moment immersed in the elements and untamed beauty of the landscape. Living in the far west of the county, the sea has been my refuge through the winter lockdown. Even on the murkiest winter’s days, the reassuring rhythm of the tide has been soothing. It seems it has been yours too – there’s been so much love on our social media platforms for images capturing cherished moments against a Cornish ocean backdrop. It seems we’ve all wanted to dream awhile and revel in visions of love on warm sands, wave-lashed rocks and clifftops at sunset, and escape – if only in our minds – to a perfect moment on the water’s edge. Buoyed by the number of magazine orders, subscribers and newly engaged couples getting in touch over these past weeks – it’s been so wonderful to hear all your joy-filled stories amidst such bleak times – we’re looking forward to a future filled with the sweetest celebrations of love on the Cornish coast. We were lucky enough to spend the uncertain days of lockdown pouring our hearts and souls into filling these pages with as much happiness, beauty and love as possible. From styled shoots that take us from blustery clifftops to rural idylls on a summer’s eve; gorgeous ideas for flowers, ceremonies and styling; and dreamlike real weddings from Nancarrow Farm in the cosy depths of winter to Polzeath on a sun-drenched summer solstice – our focus was to inspire, uplift and celebrate the wonderful days yet to come, glimmering on the Cornish horizon. I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear about your weddings and pore over your cherished images in this oh-so special corner of the world. Until then, enjoy this issue! Rebecca x

Small And Special
One of Cornwall’s most coveted venues, Boconnoc has launched its intimate wedding packages for celebrations of up to 30 guests. Situated in the heart of the Cornish countryside near Lostwithiel, the enchanting venue is set amidst acres of idyllic grounds where a deer park and pretty woodland meet gardens filled with blossoming wild flowers and views across rolling hills. Perhaps you’ll choose to marry in the estate’s 800-year-old church, opt for a civil or humanist ceremony in the elegant Grade II listed house or
venture outside to the atmospheric Georgian Bathhouse or picturesque Dorothy Garden for a relaxed al fresco ceremony. And while the celebrations might be small on numbers, you’re assured a wedding big on beauty and style. Whether you’re enjoying evening drinks around the firepits or sitting down to a wedding feast in the Smoking Room, your exclusive use celebration will be intimate, poignant and oh-so beautiful. Up to 19 of your guests can stay amidst the understated luxury of the manor house, with a further eight bedrooms available in the cosy and thoughtfully designed cottages, meaning you’ll be able to savour this Cornish country dream a while longer and make memories with your nearest and dearest to cherish forever. boconnoc.com/weddings-cornwall
Diamonds Are Forever Jewellery designer-maker Justin Duance has launched a vintage diamond collection – made with diamonds cut by hand hundreds of years ago that have been salvaged from unwanted jewellery and still twinkle with a timeless beauty today. “Ethics are important to us,” says Justin. “We are proud to offer vintage diamonds as a sustainable alternative to newly mined stones. Set in recycled gold, these rings are an excellent ethical engagement ring choice – each one is completely unique, full of character and timeless beauty.” As each stone is different, customers can browse Justin’s exclusive collection of vintage diamonds, pick the perfect one and have it made into a bespoke ring; they pair perfectly with the rustic and organic nature of his sandcast jewellery for a covetable fusion of old and new. And if you don’t get the chance to visit his workshop, you can choose from a variety of handpicked vintage diamonds now available on Justin’s website, or even use your own heirloom diamonds and gemstones, to be made into a beautiful piece of bespoke jewellery to suit you. With jewellery including stunning sandcast, textured rock and wood inlay rings to individually handcrafted cufflinks made from heirloom or recycled metals, Justin’s unique and eye-catching creations will ensure timelessly ‘you’ style. justind.co.uk

A Beautiful Day At Boconnion Not keen on waiting to say, ‘I do’? New Cornish wedding venue Boconnion has some dates available for September, October and November 2021 for couples dreaming of a dream wedding in a secluded and scenic corner of the Cornish countryside. Nestled within 150 acres of rolling fields and ancient woodland on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Boconnion offers privacy and picturesque surrounds together with romance and atmosphere in abundance. Flanked by acres of lawns and traditional outbuildings, the recently refurbished Georgian manor house and rustic Barton farmhouse stand at its heart, offering luxe yet laid-back accommodation for 27: think elegantly styled bedrooms with glorious views across the leafy grounds, and spacious bathrooms with copper bathtubs. A perfect retreat for an extended celebration, you may choose to marry al fresco beneath the mature trees, with the woodland and moorland beyond making for a breathtaking backdrop, before throwing the party of your life in a marquee on the lawn. Spend the rest of your stay exploring the grounds with your family and friends, working up a sweat on the all-weather tennis court, lounging by the heated swimming pool and enjoying long soaks in the Swedish woodfired hot tub beneath the stars. boconnion.co.uk
WEDDING SUPERSTITION While bridesmaids are a wonderful way of involving your closest friends in your celebrations today, they were originally designed to deter spirits that may want to harm the bride. Historically, they would wear the same dress as the bride and hide their faces with a veil in the hope of confusing the jealous spirits.

Treasures Of The Ocean Taking the Cornish landscape as her muse, Emily Nixon’s mesmerising designs evoke a sense of place and personality to truly eye-catching effect. “I love the fabric-like twists and folds of seaweed, the diversity in the contours of pebbles, the weathered character
of flotsam I see washed up along the shore,” says Emily. “This dichotomy of the precious and the organic – special stones encircled by sea-worn fragments of gold – characterises so much of my inspiration.” Created as bespoke commissions or available to purchase from her Hayle studio or online shop, Emily’s sculptural jewellery includes everything from textured engagement and gemstone wedding rings to cluster stud earrings, stone drawing bracelets and spiralis drop pendants. Continually adding to her collection and experimenting with new forms, Emily’s new teal peppered rock ring makes a beautiful alternative to a traditional band. “Evolved from textures found along the tideline: luxuriously imperfect, naturally irregular,” the gently rounded 9ct rose gold band is studded with nine ocean teal, lemon and sea green natural sapphires – the perfect piece for those desiring something dazzling that reflects the contours and colours of the ocean. emilynixon.com

The Atlantic rollers thunder on the sands within pebble-hurling distance of The Beach Hut. Tucked away in a secret north Cornwall surf spot, this salt-beaten shack is available for couples dreaming of stealing away for the ultimate romantic escape on the coast – and inspired the styling for this sublime styled shoot coordinated in-house by Unique Homestays. “A cosy cottage on the beach surrounded by dramatic slate grey cliffs, the rolling obsidian sea, rusty bracken melting into soft green grasses and blackened volcanic sand – the natural colours are all so striking that we went with them, rather than against them,” explains the coordinator and stylist of the shoot, Fern Godfrey. “The only pop of light was in the bridal wear, which literally shone in the hazy autumn sunlight and gave our gorgeous model that dreamy glow all brides seem to radiate.” From the dried flowers to the table linen, the symphony of natural hues slotted seamlessly into the autumnal tones of the landscape, the pebble-strewn beach and white-tipped waves. “We added interest to our bridal looks and tablescape with texture: thick hand torn paper, heavy ceramic plates, rustic wooden furniture, delicate appliqué and tiny sequins created detail without adding bold colour,” says Fern. “This also mirrored the multitude of textures you find at the beach: rough, smooth, dry, wet – it’s this stimulation of the senses that makes the natural world so beautiful and we wanted to evoke that with our styling.” Packed with colour, flavour and creative flair, the sensory experience continued with the dishes, which were served at the water’s edge for a dreamily memorable wedding breakfast. Finishing her look with delicate pearlescent jewellery, her loose curls catching the breeze, the bride embraced the elements and romance of this away-from-it-all spot, clambering over smooth wet rocks, soaking up the golden light from the cosy beach shack and beginning the first chapter of married life immersed in the wonder of nature. Unique Homestays’ curated collection of luxury retreats span from architect-designed masterpieces to pared-back beach houses and flamboyant country homes in acres of secret gardens. Bespoke by nature, their exclusive-use wedding venues offer couples romantic elopements through to largescale celebrations in breathtaking settings. See Uniquehomestays.com for their full selection of wedding, elopement and honeymoon venues.

NEW FLAME After enduring the stress of postponing her wedding in 2020 and failing to find the perfect candle to help her unwind, bride-to-be Wynne decided to create her own – and luxury candle brand Wynnie Tam Tam is the heavenly result. Her first candle, Bride Calm, is a soothing soy blend of calming French lavender with gorgeous notes of ylang-ylang and geranium. MODEL STYLE The must-have gowns from the Ashley Graham x Pronovias collection have landed at The Bridal Studio in Helston. If the lure of the boutique’s private label, Magnolias, alongside Mary’s Bridal, Pronovias and Wendy Makin isn’t tempting enough, then this brand-new addition certainly will be. The collection is the result of a collaboration between Pronovias’ chief artistic director Alessandra Rinaudo and supermodel and body activist Ashley Graham, who have co-designed a range that not only suits but celebrates all body types. Examples include their sharply tailored crepe tuxedo, fitted mermaid with tapered train and artisan embroidery, and structured mikado silk gown with asymmetrical pointed neckline that oozes elegance. Meanwhile, brides seeking something showstopping should seek out the blush-toned ruffle skirt and wrapped tulle torso of Neal, or Dunaway: the V-neck and back, head-to-toe semi-sheer guipure lace confection that screams modern seduction. bridal-studio-helston.co.uk

GREEN IS THE NEW WHITE The wonderful moment of finding and purchasing your dream dress now comes with a positive step for the planet thanks to a new earth-friendly
initiative at Bliss Bridal Gowns in Newquay. Teaming up with Fields to Forest Foundation, a community-driven project to fund and facilitate tree planting and create wildlife habitats on farmland, the boutique is working to offset the carbon emissions of the business. “During lockdown, the importance of getting out and spending time with nature, and appreciating the amazing world we live in, was so prevalent to pretty much all of us. So, it got me thinking, how could I do my bit to save the planet and help in the plight of global warming?” says boutique owner Tracy Ashton. With the production and transportation of wedding dresses producing carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming, Tracy has pledged that she will plant a tree for every bride who purchases their dress from Bliss Bridal Gowns during 2021. “I will be working with Woodland Valley Farm in Ladock,” she explains. “It allows me to offset some of my carbon emissions by planting trees and improving biodiversity.” Each bride will receive a certificate and know exactly where her tree will be planted. With a plethora of styles from designers including Rebecca Ingram, Freda Bennet, Ella Rosa and Wtoo by Watters offering everything from classic clean lines to whimsical romance, brides can look forward to the joy of finding ‘the one’ in the knowledge that a new tree will be growing in Cornish soil when she wears it for her big day. “I believe this will be a unique and beautiful long-lasting way for the bride to add an element of sustainability to her wedding,” says Tracy. blissbridalgowns.com

SOMETHING NEW
There’s simply no stopping bridal fashion. Continuing to find new and fabulous forms, the latest collections combine a sense of the time with innovation and beauty to jaw-dropping effect. Though the runways may still be virtual affairs, designers seem disaffected by the word ‘restriction’, instead exercising free reign over their imaginations to create fawn-worthy frocks more akin to works of art than anything else. From the stunning simplicity of a perfectly cut

minimalism The no-frills movement continues to dominate wedding world, where streamlined silhouettes and clean lines garner unfailingly chic impact. Think impeccably tailored separates (especially trousers) or fuss-free jumpsuits and pantsuits in the best quality fabrics for seductive, form-sculpting fashions that Pronovias, The Bridal Studio
ooze timeless style; add a detachable skirt for extra versatility. Alternatively, a plain satin ballgown fuses old school glamour with modern romance and can be customised with a single embellishment such as a veil, belt or back bow. Slips and sheaths are key pieces of pared-back purity, as are classic A-lines updated with square necklines, cowl necks, open backs, or given a preppy vibe with collars. As well as the staples of silk and crepe, brides will be drawn to the luxe likes of mikado, organza, jacquard and taffeta for a modern, more sculptural twist

high drama

Victoria Kay, Coastal Bridal
Attention-grabbing and maximalist styles are making a comeback as brides step out of Covid’s shadow and embrace the limelight. From big shoulders and ruffles to puff everything – especially sleeves – volume is en vogue. Together with statement necks (pleated, deepplunge and sweetheart) and backs (or hip-skimming backless numbers), an air of the theatrical is boosted by showstopping adornments such as maxi bows, XXL knots, plumage and all-over sparkle. Pair a frothy tulle or tiered skirt with a demure strapless bodice or high neck; pick a figure-skimming frock with a skirt split; or opt for over-thetop ruffles that fringe your gown from head-to-toe. Then there’s high vintage collars, oversized sleeves, trains replaced (or accompanied by) statement boleros and capes, and high-low hemlines – they’re all au courant features of this particularly head-turning type of high drama.

Brides are becoming more playful in their attitude toward wedding day fashion, which is having the knock-on effect of emboldening their choices. Colour and pattern are the keynotes. Picture bold prints (graphic florals, fashion sketches, botanical art) and colour pop brights, or don your ‘something blue’ with one of the watercolours du jour. Meanwhile, pastels and blush tones remain a fashion-forward choice, while black wedding gowns are also returning to the runways for brides seeking something more daringly à la mode. Show some skin with a short skirt, sexy corsetry or risqué backless styles, or choose transparency and sheer fabrics for somewhere between cleverly covered up and exquisitely exposed. Mix textures and layer your look to lend even more interest to your ensemble. Other features to look out for include ornate embroidery, hand-stitched 3D florals and beadwork, elaborate drapery and dazzling metallics.

new boho Merging ethereal elements with modern prairie, the new boho is all about whimsy and romance, but with an individualised edge. From floral lace, transparency and vintage embroideries to cottagecore (such as loose-fitting dresses, head-to-toe cotton or linen and vintage patterns) for a pretty pastoral look, brides are adopting the look in a number of unique ways. Reimagined vintage wear sees 1950s tea-length skirts or 1920s gowns with drop waists, geometric designs and art deco accents paired with something romantic or ephemeral, such as off-the-shoulder styles and blouson (balloon, sheer and tulle) sleeves. Add some contemporary laser-cut lace, tassels, drawstrings, leaf motifs and tiered skirts for enhanced eclecticism. Extra kudos for brides weaving sustainability into their outfit via eco fabrics, pre-loved/heirloom pieces, or custom-made couture.

and the bride wore green Sustainable is chic. From innovative designers to vintage frock-filled boutiques, we’ve picked out some ideas for finding a dreamy dress with an ethical edge words Hannah May
A sustainable wedding is becoming less of an ideal and more of a must-have for modern brides. Bridal designers are central to driving the movement, with a growing number launching capsule collections and sustainable ranges in order to meet the eco-friendly demands of brides keen to wear something fashion-forward and benevolent to boot. From exquisite new designs to vintage, second-hand, bespoke and repurposed heirloom pieces, bridal fashion is in the midst of a very modern and beautifully sustainable makeover.
Rembo Styling Rembo Styling’s recent collections prove that bringing the environment to the fore doesn’t mean sacrificing on style or quality. Calling themselves out as a contributor toward the world’s climatic problems, the innovative designer declares that: “the clothing industry, in general, is the second largest polluter worldwide”, before explaining their ‘socially responsible entrepreneurship’ efforts to move toward a more sustainable solution. Specifically, the boho-chic designs featured in their Alter Eco capsule are created from substances that pollute less water and have origins in sustainable forest management, as they also work to reduce their use of new resources. Favouring recycled polyester, European hemp, organic cotton, cupro viscose and bamboo sourced from sustainable forest management, the entire collection is created on demand in a conscious way, while the company continually strives for more planetfriendly production methods. Peruse the collection to discover dreamy sustainable crepe gowns complete with organic cotton lace, recycled chiffon skirts with lace tops crafted from recycled yarns, and stunningly soft slips made with (sweat-resistant) sustainable bamboo. With roots in haute couture, designer-maker Christine Trewinnard is
Freckle Photography
Christine Trewinnard proud to still practise the traditional skills involved in crafting bespoke gowns. “When I’m asked to make a dress, I know it’s going to be a very
special garment that hopefully will be used again one day as an heirloom or maybe tweaked to be reworn,” she says. “Today’s fast fashion has created a system where clothing and styles are not designed to last and are frequently discarded. However, handcrafted garments are strong and resilient, they stand the test of time and are items to be treasured.” Sourcing fabrics from suppliers in the UK means that Christine can order the exact materials required for individual gowns, minimising waste while supporting British craftspeople. Having a gown customised, created from scratch, or pre-existing fashions reworked into something new offers a variety of options for the modern bride desiring something bespoke yet ethical. By considering the post-wedding purpose, it can be refashioned and reworn to extend its life beyond that of the day. Simple changes such as cutting the train, changing the colour or shortening a design can completely transform a wedding dress into another unique ready-to-wear piece. “Separates are a favourite of mine too, as a pretty lace or silk top can be worn again with jeans and heels for a dinner date, especially if it’s a perfectly fitted, timeless piece,” says Christine. “I love to be asked to create a bride’s gown from her mother’s wedding dress; there is nostalgia, romance and great sentiment in bringing new life into a pre-worn garment.” Combining meaning, styles and love stories, what better way to honour a variety of loves in your life than by choosing a family heirloom? “My dress stands that I use are probably older than me! My sewing machines are of an era when they made them to last: they are strong, heavy and robust. Even my sheers have been with me since my early days at college, many years ago!” reveals Christine of her make-do and mend ethos. “Tucked away in boxes in my studio are pieces of embellishments, delicate lace and intricate embroidery. If I can use one of these treasures for making garters or for adding into a sample garment for a magazine shoot, I’m thrilled!” christinetrewinnard.co.uk

Days of Grace Vintage One of the easiest ways to find a sustainable dress is to opt for pre-loved and vintage fashions. Located in the beautiful beachside village of Budleigh Salterton in Devon, Days of Grace Vintage is home to a spectacular range of original antique dresses from the 1900s to the 1970s. “I really love the early pieces and have a rail full of exquisite high-necked, embroidered and pintucked dresses that brides are wearing now. The 1920s, ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s are favourites too, but if something is beautiful and a later date it’ll make the cut!” says owner, Linda Duriez. “There are more than 100 dresses in store, including a limited ‘sample’ designer range that fit with our look, from Jenny Packham, Temperley and Yolancris; like all our dresses there is only one – and when it’s gone, it’s gone!” Armed with a passion for antique lace and textiles, Linda has been designing and creating unique dresses to help make every bride’s vision into a customised reality. “I collect all the family stories as my brides love to know the history of their dress, and everything is handwashed,” she says of the care taken at every stage of the process. “I’m not a purist when it comes to fashioning an old dress into something a bride desires, from low backs to complete remodelling. Sometimes two dresses become one, so a damaged dress can live on – especially when so often the fabric and workmanship is so beautiful; and nothing is wasted,” she says. “I like to think even if you only have £50 you could find something with us,” says Linda of her budget-friendly boutique, where the majority of pieces retail at between £300 and £500. “Buying vintage is an ethical option; it’s kind to the planet, respects and restores what is already there, and is always good value.” daysofgracevintage.com

It’s steeped in history and is the stuff of songs, stories and legend. Armies have waged wars to win it. Our bodies even contain traces of it. You can eat it, wear it and swim in it, as it’s suspended in seawater. Gold. The dazzling metal’s origins are from outer space, while here on Earth it continues to reign supreme as one of our most precious materials – especially when it comes to wedding rings. “We have an implicit trust in the value of gold – endorsed by the annals of time. This ancient fascination is reassuring when it comes to making an investment in it today,”

says Chloe Wild at Emily Nixon (emilynixon.com). “Gold not only holds its value, but it’s also durable and will last on your finger for a lifetime. And, of course, there’s a reason beyond its strength that has given it its revered status – it is beautiful.” Whether you’re searching for a statement piece, reworked heirloom ring or paredback vision of auric beauty, gold is a hardy, versatile and timelessly on-trend option. “Gold is your most traditional choice for a wedding ring, and rightly so. It is a beautiful metal available in more colours than you might imagine. Every carat of gold has its own tone, so you can choose the perfect one for you,” says Jamila Hirtenstein at Justin Duance (justind.co.uk) of the myriad qualities of gold.
3.
3.
“Unlike many jewellers, we don’t rhodium plate our white golds,” she adds. “Instead, we celebrate them in their natural tones, from creamy pale 9ct to the deep warm grey of 18ct white gold. As such, there is no upkeep or worry of your plating wearing off, which sometimes puts people off choosing white gold.” Specialising in contemporary custom-made jewellery, Justin’s creations merge metal, meaning and design. “All of the gold we use in our jewellery is 100% recycled and we can also repurpose your own heirloom gold into a sandcast ring, which is a lovely way of adding immeasurable sentimental value to your wedding or engagement ring,” says Jamila.

“I love working with yellow gold – it’s my absolute favourite,” enthuses Stephanie Stevens (stephaniestevensjewellery.co.uk), who consults closely with couples to co-design bespoke engagement and wedding bands. “When you polish the metal it has such a beautiful shine and colour. Also, yellow and rose gold stands out the most when it comes to adding a brushed finish: the ring can look so different just from that.” Stephanie extols another virtue of gold: melding metals, which allows couples to match the carats of their engagement and wedding rings. “It could be something really simple such as the setting for the stone is a rose or yellow gold and the main band is white gold,” she says. “When you mix the metals, it can give the ring such

character and really make it stand out from other rings.” Emily Nixon also loves to combine golds of different hues in her coastal-inspired style of organic jewellery. “Emily loves the mix of golds, the buttery sheen of yellow gold, the steely stone of white or the delicate pink of rose gold – each having a different mix of alloys which will define its colour and carat,” explains Chloe. The pandemic has seen a surge of interest in Emily’s one-of-a-kind designs, particularly gold engagement rings, as well as continued interest in coloured gemstones – natural sapphires and coloured diamonds set in yellow gold are proving a favourite. This blend of gemstones, gold and Emily’s playful approach ensures a creative and beautifully individual result. “The colour of gold will act as a base

colour to begin ‘painting’ with gemstones,” says Chloe. “She will play with colour continuously – mixing gold and her chosen gemstones in natural ocean and earth hues. These combined with the sea-worn finish to her gold – a unique part of her process – defines her coastal style of organic jewellery so distinctive to Emily.” 1. Justin Duance justind.co.uk 2. ECO EDGE Think grooms wear, think sustainability – where conscience combines with style for outfits as fashion-forward as they are forward-thinking words Hannah May
From suits crafted using eco-friendly fabrics and methods to hire services, vintage wear and second-hand options, the modern groom is spoilt with clever ready-to-wear, tailor-made investments, and preloved options all with a gratifyingly benevolent twist. Here are Wed’s top picks of the latest sustainable lust-haves…
TRANSCENDENT TAILORING The Ultra Suit by Tranzend is a waterproof, anti-odour, ultra-stretchable, wrinkle-free, breathable and UV protected two-piece suit and white shirt, or as the innovative creators say: “sartorial aesthetics, sophisticated technology and environmental sustainability combined into a single two-piece suit for all occasions”. ECO EDGE
SUITS YOU, SIR! Hiring your suit is an obvious ‘green’ choice, though the specifics can have greater impact; for example, a wool suit scores extra sustainability points since it’s naturally biodegradable, while narrowing your selection to local or UK-made brands reduces your carbon footprint (and can ensure quality control). “Both of our hire companies have state-of-the-art eco-friendly dry-cleaning processes that are kind to the cloth as well as the environment,” reveals Alan Walker from Cornwall Suit Room. “Our own dry cleaners use a wool mark-approved lagoon cleaning system by Electrolux where no solvents are used, and all products are biodegradable for chemical-free drainage.” One of their stockists, Skopes, boasts a history of social responsibility. “How to minimise our business’s impact on our environment has been something on our radar for quite a while,” they declare while launching a new collection of sustainably sourced suits made in partnership with Lyfcycle. Meanwhile, if you do opt to buy, try to select something with a multi-purpose or timeless element, such as a tweed jacket, tartan, or checks that can be dressed down after the event with jeans, or worn with chinos to other formal celebrations. “Most of our waistcoats and neckwear are made by Heirloom Waistcoats and Anthony Formal Wear; both companies are proud to be still making them in Great Britain,” adds Alan. cornwallsuitroom.co.uk
GET SHIRTY A crisp shirt is integral to a groom’s ensemble, so choose wisely by considering quality, cut and conscientiousness. Arthur & Henry’s organic cotton shirts are the style-meets-substance solution. Their cotton comes from certified Fairtrade organic farming groups, which means that apart from the environmental benefits of farming organically, the farmers also receive a financial boost by being part of a support organisation. To achieve a classic look, pick their white or blue Chislet double cuff shirt in a fine herringbone weave, or white Oxford weave shirt with or without a button-down collar for a slightly more relaxed look. For grooms desiring something with an extra dash of panache, the blue or pink striped organic cotton shirt with a contrast floral trim is a slimmer fitting, eye-catching choice. All shirts are cut longer so they don’t come un-tucked and have horizontal bottom buttonholes to prevent splaying, while signature but discreet orange detailing provides an extra luxe touch. arthurandhenry.com
DOING GOOD With the fashion industry experiencing a shift in priorities and practices, Theory’s Good Collection is a prime example of today’s environmental refocus. “With the initial goal of making our signature fabrics 100% traceable by 2025, we have begun the work of transforming the way we produce our clothes,” announce the fashion philanthropists. “We are especially proud that in addition to representing the exceptional quality that defines Theory, our ‘Good’ fabrics are ethically sourced and developed in collaboration with fabric mills at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing.” The result? Good-looking grooms dressed in do-good clothing for more kindhearted fashion. Peruse their capsule collection for the latest finds: we think their Nordic blue Bowrey blazer in Good Wool pairs perfectly with their white Sylvain shirt in Good Cotton, while their Smoke coloured Clinton Blazer in Good Linen looks and feels swoon-worthily cool. theory.com/mens-good-collection

THE BRIGHT SIDE
A combination of bold, uplifting colours and fun, relaxed vibes is just the tonic we all need after the bleakness of the past 12 months – and this styled shoot delivers on both fronts. With its intimate atmosphere and beamed ceilings, the rustic light-filled setting of Tregedna Barn makes a character-filled canvas for a laid-back bohochic celebration. The colour scheme – an eye-popping medley of red, orange and pink – paints a gorgeous scene against the wooden textures and whitewashed bricks of the barn; most vividly in the arch, which makes a beautiful backdrop for a handfasting ceremony. Together with light-catching gold candlesticks, bright red and orange florals pop against the crisp white tablecloths of the tablescape, while the playful typography of the stationery and ceramic place settings reflect the vibrant palette and party-ready mood. Painted with Italian meringue buttercream, the work-of-art cake carries the colour scheme in richly textured flowers dancing across a canvas of deep blue flecked with white, reminiscent of the ocean. A statement aesthetic calls for a statement bridal ensemble – and the bride certainly looks head-turning in a flowing blue dress handcrafted in Cornwall by Christine Trewinnard. A half-up, half-down hairstyle of soft waves and a chunky braid, together with a bouquet of jewel toned blooms, completes the colourful boho look, while delicate jewellery handmade by Becca Williams in nearby Penryn adds to the artful, locally crafted dimension of the shoot. The groom, meanwhile, embraces a modern rustic aesthetic with a tweed and bow tie combo. It is a relaxed, vibrant scene brimming with Cornish-made touches for the happiest of days.

GOLDEN HOUR
Weddings have changed dramatically over recent years as couples have increasingly chosen to abandon tradition to celebrate their love in a way that truly represents their personalities and relationship. Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the trend for elopements and super-intimate weddings has really gained pace – and looks set to be a popular choice for years to come. Featuring a back-to-nature ceremony with just the couple’s young children in attendance, this styled shoot celebrates the world of options open to couples who dream of a small and ‘so-you’ wedding. “It can be really special to spend your big day with just your family, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have all the extras a larger wedding would have,” explains Annabelle Cowling of The Cornish Flower Company who styled the shoot. The dreamy summer scene certainly isn’t short on style and luxe touches. Set in Little Oak Cornwall’s green and secluded meadow, a tipi styled with natural shades and textures offers ambience and romance in abundance. “The almost Moroccan theme is in keeping with recent trends, the soft furnishings, warm lit tipi and dried flowers creating a cosy hygge feel,” says Annabelle. Decorated with petals and pampas grass, the cake makes a captivating centrepiece, the palm motifs and warm hues of the stationery slotting seamlessly into the aesthetic. Holding the hands of her small daughters dressed in pretty embroidered frocks, the bride’s soft boho gown, floral crown and effortless hair and make-up adds to the relaxed dreaminess of the celebration. “This set-up would be so amazing for a summer’s evening,” concludes Annabelle. “Just imagine close family, delicious food, evening music and your own private countryside hideaway.”

WHAT’S TRENDING? Looking for some wedding wonder? Here’s our round-up of the latest trends to help you design a day that’s as uniquely wow as it is ‘now’ words Hannah May
The trick of wedding trends is to take something you like and make it your own. Rather than copying the latest looks outright, infuse a sense of individual character by selecting a few focal trends from the moment to reflect the time in which you’re marrying, but do it in a personalised way to ensure it’s timelessly ‘you’.
Tree planting parties Weddings are getting greener. From zero-carbon events to barefoot parties in swoon-worthy outdoor spaces, couples are choosing to pay homage to and nurture Mother Nature in an ever-increasing number of ways. Tree planting provides the perfect gesture to symbolise a new start and give back to the earth, encouraging you and your guests to mindfully take stock in the simple and grounding act of rewilding benevolence. It could be featured as part of your ceremony, as an alternative gift list idea by requesting donations toward a tree planting project, or as a pre or post-wedding party at a location of your choice, be it your own garden or a local park as you gather loved ones for a gorgeously green day together followed by an al fresco feast.

Local and bespoke menus
Beautiful and the Feast
Beautiful and the Feast
Supporting local businesses is fast becoming the trend du jour. It’s not just Covid-19 and the global climate crises that have shifted our perspective, but old-fashioned good sense, too. Sourcing locally means more and better quality for your buck, minus the air miles, which is especially true when it comes to food production. Home-grown food usually tastes better, is fresher, more nutrient-filled and less spoilt by the transportation process. What’s more, by designing a menu with your caterer to reflect your venue, season and palate, you’re guaranteed a bespoke wedding breakfast that will be raved about long after the last morsel has been devoured.

Mini cakes The move toward miniature is about making everything feel extra special and considered, and this year’s penchant for single-serve personal-sized bakes is an extension of the spoilsome trend. Pick from a tower of iced cakes or cupcakes (perhaps doughnuts, profiteroles or brownies) or proffer mini cakes as dessert or packaged up as individual favours in their own beautiful box as an evening or take-home treat; you can even post these to guests unable to attend. For extra style points, opt for a design featuring handcrafted sugar paste flowers, gold accents, ombré effect, and alcoholic flavours such as prosecco and piña colada.

An ambient experience Plunge your guests’ senses into sheer delight or state of abandon with an immersive atmosphere. Think fairy light or floral caves and curtains, art installations, and roaming and interactive entertainment. This could take the form of a caricature artist, ceilidh dancing, magician, stand-up comedy, circus show, glitter bar, garden games and rides, casino, karaoke, sharing platters, s’mores or live cooking – for the ultimate in surround sound, sight, taste, scent and touch. Stimulate each and all of these for a pleasure-filled party that’s impossible to forget.

Dried flowers Dried flowers are all the rage for a reason. Not only do they bring a natural and rustic vibe that’s particularly fitting for a festival or countrythemed wedding of any season, they also lend a wonderfully wild edge to your décor. One of the joys of dried flowers is their versatility, allowing you to incorporate a variety of tones and textures into your space, with the extra bonus of their longevity, since they also tend to last longer than fresh blooms. From floral crowns, buttonholes and bouquets to suspended arrangements, arches and centrepieces, a mixture of grasses, petals, seedpods and foliage can be combined to create a modern low-maintenance look. Pretty pastels There’s a particular buzzword that continues to linger on the lips of wedding world: pastels. And it’s not confined to the décor, since dresses and groomswear are also sporting the muted shades. The most popular ‘tints’ of the moment range from dusty pinks and mint green to powder blues and pale peaches. Splice with a bright for a colour scheme that packs an especially contemporary colour punch (see p.77 for our guide on navigating your way through colour palettes for your wedding!).

Once you’ve established your top colours, think about how they can be combined and utilised to maximum effect while making your vision manifest. This is the time to be specific and really consider the subtleties of certain shades, and how best to place them throughout the big and small elements of your day. “Your colour palette is a small selection of colours that will form the basis of your entire wedding day design,” explains Rebecca. “For example, you may know you’d like pink to play a part in the wedding, but is that a muted blush pink, a hot pink or more of a mauve? There are some great tools online for creating and experimenting with palettes.” Try Coolors, a colour scheme generator (coolors.co) or Canva (canva.com/ colors/color-palette-generator). “Another tip would be to incorporate a contrasting colour or a darker tone that will help when it comes to furniture choices, stationery design and florals,” she adds. “Once you have determined your palette, look for direct inspiration on Pinterest and try to create a cohesive mood board for you and your suppliers to work from – that way you are all working from the same page.” Specialising in wedding styling and personalised wedding stationery, Nikki Sherriff from Knots and Kisses (knotsandkisses.co.uk) is replete with practical advice on how to select your scheme. “Never just pick one or two colours!” she cautions. “Picking a colour palette for your wedding should be no different to decorating your home. If you pick just a specific shade of blue and pair it with just white tablecloths your whole scheme is going to look flat and potentially depressing! As a stylist and designer, I always make sure I pick a neutral palette of at least two base tones and then one or two accent colours on top of this, to give a colour scheme real depth.”
Styling Knots & Kisses Clare Kinchin Photography
Styling Knots & Kisses Clare Kinchin Photography
She also warns couples not to get caught up in the process of over-matching colours, or obsessively trying to recreate a single tone in every aspect of the day.
Styling & stationery Knots & Kisses Clare Kinchin Photography
“Don’t try and match everything to your bridesmaids’ dresses!” she urges. “Not only are you going to end up with a flat colour scheme, but you will never find everything in an identical shade to a specific fabric!” She does have an easy solution on how to achieve a beautiful scheme, should you insist on a single colour. “Pick a shade of that colour and then pick different tones around it so you have, say, three shades of that colour to work with. So if you want a purple wedding, incorporate your favourite shade of plum, for example, and then add accent colours of mauve and lavender to complement it.” Rebecca agrees. “My biggest overall tip is to balance colours within proportion,” she says. “There are lots of wedding elements you can add colour to, from the flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses, wedding cake and even your glassware so it is important to select one or two main colours within your palette and use

Trendy tones One way to ensure that your palette packs a sartorial punch is to select something from the year’s top trends. By splicing a fashionable shade into your scheme, not only are you making your day instantly more modern and of the moment, but you’re also more likely to find items to suit, from fresh-from-therunway bridesmaids’ gowns to the latest homewares, accessories and décor. Plus, there’s plenty of scope to make it your own to ensure a beautifully bespoke day that’s as on-trend as it is reflective of you. You could always take your cue directly from colour experts, Pantone, who for the first time ever this year have chosen two colours for 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit,” says Pantone Colour Institute executive, Leatrice Eiseman. Their other new colours for the year include warm golden-orange, marigold, cerulean, rust, and French blue. Everywhere from interiors to the catwalks – and particularly in wedding world – you’ll see these shades, alongside flashes of burnt orange, burgundy, purples, pastels, mustard and ochre. “After a year of despondency and heartache, people are ready for some colour in their lives in 2021 and beyond! I think this is one of the main reasons Pantone picked a bright sunny yellow for Styling Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Chloe Ely Photography
their colour of the year,” says Nikki, who has some advice about how to tone colour palettes. “Sugary pastels are definitely back, but don’t even think about toning it! Go as saccharine as you dare with Barbie pinks, vibrant lilacs and strong mints, and if you’re mixing them altogether, that’s even better,” she suggests. “Boho will still be with us for a while to come with gorgeous deep atmospheric colour palettes of rusts, ochres and terracottas. Mixing them with beautiful

she adds. “A combination of blues and blushes are still featuring heavily – especially in weddings by the sea in Devon and Cornwall. The colours are relaxing and can create a bright and fresh feel to your wedding, perfect for spring,” observes Rebecca. “There’s lots more pink popping up, but definitely more of a dusky tone paired with sage greens, pops of black or dried florals. I love this trend and the biggest benefit is that it doesn’t need to feel ‘girly’,” she says. “There are also pops of yellows emerging within wedding designs and I think we will begin to see more of this into 2022 matched with other more pared-back colours. My favourite ever-rising trend is a neutral palette; think mix-and-match champagne bridesmaids’ dresses, layered linens and fabrics in muted tones and botanicals in deep caramel tones.” Styling Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Courtney Marie Photography

garland glossary Confusing your dahlias with your delphiniums? Get clued up on your wedding blooms with wed’s compendium of petals words Rebecca Matthews Somewhere along the path from the engagement to the wedding day, you’ll be faced with a petal predicament: which flowers would you like to dress your day? When are they in season? And, most importantly, what exactly does an anemone, ranunculus or hellebore actually look like? For those not au fait with flowers, it can be something of a sticking point. After all, your choice of flowers is key to setting the tone, colour and even scent of your day – and a little floral knowledge goes a long way. We’ve picked out some popular wedding flowers, along with pointers on symbolism and seasonality, to get you started.

There’s something beautiful about dressing your day with personalised petals. Florists Helen Edwards of The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk), Lisa Marie Grigsby of Down by the River Florals (downbytheriver.co.uk) and Laura Hingston (laurahingstonflowers. com) share their top tips
1. Tell your story through your flowers. As a floral artist I love it when couples
Poppy Striking flowers with delicate petals in brilliant shades, from white and pink to yellow and opulent red. Symbolic meaning: sleep, peace, beauty In season: May to late June
come to me with specific ideas because of childhood memories or meaningful reasons for their choices, which I can use to work with them to tell a story. One couple had eucalyptus because it reminded the groom of a giant tree in his back garden growing up. Lisa
2. Include a special piece of vintage jewellery. It might be a piece from a late grandmother, aunt, mother or someone else special, such as a brooch which could be pinned to the ribbon on the bridal bouquet.
Ranunculus Pretty, papery clusters of petals available in a variety of shades from white and pink to red, yellow and orange. Symbolic meaning: charm, beauty In season: April to June
Helen
3. Choose flowers or foliage for their meanings. It could be thyme for courage, rosemary for remembrance or purple lilac for memories of first love. These symbolisms can be so special and are a thoughtful way to consider the decorations you include on your day. There are some wonderful books which may be a good starting point such as ‘Discovering the Meaning of Flowers’ by Shane Connolly and ‘The Language of Flowers’ by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.
Rose Classic and romantic, multi-petal flowers available in almost every shade. Symbolic meaning: love, romance, grace In season: June to early autumn
Lisa
4. Incorporate custom beadwork or embroidery. This can be used to wrap the handles of the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets. We typically use Italian silk to wrap the handles of bridal bouquets but once we used antique lace that had been a table runner for the bride’s grandmother’s wedding breakfast, and it was stunning. Laura
Tulip Cheery flowers available in a range of varieties – including double, parrot and lily – and virtually every colour. Symbolic meaning: love, affection, renewal In season: March to May
5. Celebrate your shared passion in your floral design. I once created floral arrangements for a couple of international basketball players, which featured lots of bright colours and mini basketballs popped into the table arrangements. Helen

6. Think about the scent of your flowers. You might choose beautiful British blooms, garden roses or trailing jasmine and herbs, bringing everything to life with their delicate and heady scents. Lisa
7. Include personal items in your flowers. Small framed photographs of loved ones who can’t be there on your day can be either placed in your bouquet or perhaps in a top table arrangement for only you and you husband to see. Laura
8. Choose the flowers you love. Think about your favourite blooms and pop in a few your fiance may like. Incorporate flowers to reflect your heritage, culture or occupation. Helen
9. Create a keepsake after the wedding. It might be pressed flower collages in copper hanging frames, or contact a bespoke maker who preserves flowers as paperweights or in glass resin jewellery. Lisa
10. Create a bouquet using fresh and faux flowers. Keep the faux flowers and add fresh seasonal flowers to them as the year progresses. Helen
11. Get involved in the design process with your floral designer. The process should involve several conversations, emails and Pinterest boards. Your floral designs will evolve during this process and eventually be everything you want them to be. This can ultimately be one of the most rewarding parts of your big day! Laura

NATURE’S FINEST Whatever the size of your budget or guest list, wow-worthy flowers can bring your wedding to life words Elizabeth Chester

Flowers are guaranteed to impress in all seasons.

While tradition dictates flowers appear in bouquets, buttonholes and bridesmaids’ baskets, these days we see them covering every available surface and cascading down from ceilings and beams, and hanging from inside yurts and marquees. “Couples are being a lot bolder with their ideas for weddings and are looking for new and exciting ways to display flowers,” says Emma Hewlett from Emma Hewlett Floral Design (emmahewlett.co.uk). Whether your flowers are real or faux, created by your florist or DIY, here’s some expert advice for your wedding day flower arrangements.
Down by the River Florals Paul Keppel Photography
Centrepieces Using a tree as a centrepiece will really make a statement. Blossom in particular, with its soft, romantic look, makes for whimsical and romantic table décor, and you can create a fairy-tale vibe with ivory or pink cherry blossom trees. Depending on the size of your displays and reception space, the branches could reach high above your guests, creating a petal canopy for your guests to dine beneath. Emma suggests that pampas grass is another to consider. “Due to its height, it can create a real statement in designs,” she says. “I’ve also seen a move into a slightly more tropical feel with the use of palms.” We love the idea of weaving different locations around the globe into your day, by using tropical flowers as a nod towards your travels. “Tablescapes that bring the outdoors in are stunning,” says Lisa Grigsby from Down by the River Florals (downbytheriverflorals.co.uk). But they don’t always have to be super-sized. “Depending on the season, you could scatter acorns and pine cones on the table, or delicately pressed flowers. Mini dried flower bunches work well as table settings, alongside beautiful linen table runners and plenty of candles at different heights. Delicate details coupled with a feature installation are perfect for inspiring a magical atmosphere for your special day,” she says.
Floral Arches Steeped in tradition, we have seen arches go from moderate to super-sized in recent years. We adore the idea of a bulbous arch bursting with your favourite The Velvet Daisy Rik Pennington Photography

installation or archway to frame your day. Current trends include a free-standing structure, a classic pagoda or using suspended hoops or floral clouds.” For extra oomph, don’t stop at your ceremony or venue’s steps – consider arches that cascade down steps or continue along pathways or alongside outdoor aisles. “Move over standard floral arch, and maybe think geometric shapes or metal structures,” adds Emma.
Suspended Florals Look up! As wedding décor gets ever more creative and awe-inspiring, every inch of ceremony and reception spaces are filled with wonderful ideas and creations. And nothing says wowing your crowd like mid-air creations. Suspended flowers can work in many ways, but we love the idea of swathes of tumbling flowers above the couple as they say their vows. Talk to your florist about ideas that will work with your venue, perhaps exploring oversized floral clouds suspended over top tables, over the aisle or above

the couple during the ceremony. These not only look incredible but smell divine, too! Similarly, a pergola-style frame bedecked with hanging flowers that creates an indoor canopy for guests to dine underneath is nothing short of floral-fabulous.
Tipis & Marquees The nature of marquees, tipis and yurts mean they have huge, cavernous ceilings just waiting to be filled. And filling them with flowers and plants is the perfect way to personalise your wedding under canvas. Flowers can tumble from hoops, wind their way around marquee poles or fall from chandeliers. We’ve seen ceiling spaces filled with ferns and teaming with hydrangeas or an assortment of beautifully coloured seasonal flowers. But again, if you can’t quite stretch to super-sized installations, you can still have wow factor floral pieces. “If you have fewer flowers, just use larger blooms – big and blousy varieties of flower – to create impact,” suggests Helen Edwards from The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk).
Twigs & Branches Floral arrangements don’t have to be confined to flowers. Willow is a beautiful, natural element that can be weaved into stunning sculptures for garden parties, or used as an archway, either in the traditional rounded shape or even made into an angular frame. Branches are budget-stretching so consider using them in rustic celebrations and hang or weave them, or simply enjoy them with other dried foliage scattered around your venue in mismatched vases.
Bring The Outdoors In If you’re wavering about what the weather might be doing on your big day and you just don’t want to plan

a tumbling wisteria tree that the happy couple can say their vows beneath. With benches covered in roses and a myriad of faux flowers, this outdoor garden idea can create a truly magical vista. If that sounds like too big a project, a simple addition to your ceremony can still have an enormous impact. “You might consider meadow-style arrangements lining your aisle,’ suggests Lisa.
Light It Up Gardens and outdoor spaces are easy to illuminate with fairy lights of all shapes and descriptions. But why keep it just to lights? Deck trees with hanging flowers – particularly if it’s not during the summer months – and create a magical garden wonderland where you don’t have to wait for Mother Nature to dictate what grows and when. And don’t forget, floral décor doesn’t just have to be about the location itself. Get creative with your waiting staff and bedeck their outfits, or any trays they may be serving food and drink from, in flowers to

match your theme. But if big florals aren’t your thing, or your budget has had to go elsewhere, it’s important to remember you can still wow with a small number of flowers. “In terms of the wow factor, it doesn’t matter how many flowers are required,” says Helen. “You can still create impact by using bold, stronger colours, and tones. A simple bouquet full of assorted peonies, without foliage, can create a bold entrance for any beautiful bride.” The Velvet Daisy

Focal points Think about whether your venue has a ‘natural’ focal point for your ceremony, such as an existing structure or doorway, for example. Let that guide you as to how much effort you need to put into creating something extra. A doorway can be simply framed by flowers, but a blank canvas venue might need a structure or backdrop added to create that focal point.
Have a plan Have a cohesive plan in place for the overall style of your wedding before deciding on décor for your ceremony. THE SMALLER PICTURE
If you’re planning a micro or elopement wedding with few or no guests in the frame, you’ll be the photographer’s sole subjects. Whether you’re a selfie addict or shrinking wallflower, the matter of wedding photography is one that can make even the most confident couple camera-shy. But fret not, for this is your chance for boundless adventure, to cast off Hannah Wilde Photography
the usual restrictions and celebrate your day, your way – including your photography, which has found new ways of late to capture your wedding with the same unique kind of style and character. “Almost every couple I’ve ever worked with says to me that they wish they’d had more time together on the day to soak in the romance and significance of their wedding,” says photographer Hannah Wilde (hannah-wilde.com). “This is the beauty of an elopement or micro wedding – you have the entire day (or weekend…
Thomas Frost Photography
or week!) to bask in each other’s presence and really absorb the moments in ways you simply can’t do when you are managing the events of the day for the sake of everyone around you rather than for just the two of you.” So how does this new W-day look? “It seems that elopers and small intimate wedding couples are looking to bring a new spin to the day,” observes photographer Thomas Frost (thomasfrostphotography.com). “Many imagined that they wanted this big
Thomas Frost Photography
event and have been refused due to the current climate, so decided that if they can’t have a physically big event, they can have a big adventure. And that is really my bag!” he enthuses. “I love adventures and the more adventurous the couple, the better. Since Covid-19, I have been getting in the water with couples, trekking them up mountains and through deep woods and moors. We have been dancing in the rain and swimming in the sea; it has been brilliantly mad!”
Verity Westcott Photography
The trick is not to overthink: simply decide how best to suit yourselves, then invite your preferred photographer along. “I have had the honour of photographing a few elopements where I get to spend the day with the couple and their family, telling the whole story of their day from the beginning to end,” reveals photographer Verity Westcott (veritywestcottphotography.com). “For
Thomas Frost Photography
elopements, adventure is the next big
127
feature | PHOTOGRAPHY | THE SMALLER PICTURE Verity Westcott Photography
thing. As it is just the two of them, couples are keen for an adventure; they have more time so are up for finding epic spots for photos, and the experience becomes part of the story.” “I’d say the real beauty of an elopement or micro wedding is the intimacy of the day,” says Hannah. “The reduced guest list means you don’t have to worry about pleasing anyone other than yourselves and your choice of celebration can be entirely down to your own personal preferences. High quality wedding photography is essential to ensure you capture the essence of the day powerfully and authentically, not just for yourselves to look back on and share with your children and grandchildren one day, but to share immediately with your loved ones who weren’t able to be there with you on the day,” she explains. With the rulebook well and truly shredded, you can design a day that makes the most of your resources and time together with the added benefit of exclusively selftailoring your choices. If you fancy a hike or hot air balloon ride, go for it, since you won’t be abandoning anyone or strong-arming someone (other than your thrill-seeking photographer!) to join you. “I met a couple in a car park next to the beach in October,” says Thomas of a recent event, where he was shooting photos and video. “We had drinks then a swim in the sea – no wetsuits for any of us! Then back to the venue for a hot tub, prep, ceremony and visit by an alpaca. Then a visit to a different beach, cliff climb, afternoon tea, dress change and evening sunset handfasting ceremony… What an epic day!”

diversifying the industry, noticing how couples are leading the change and challenging the status quo. “We have some epic landscapes in Cornwall and Devon and with small weddings and elopements you can really make the most of this extra freedom. Do something different, express yourselves as a couple and do what you want!” he says. “Handfastings are an ancient ritual I expect to be hugely revived as time goes on,” predicts Hannah. “The ritual of marriage can be carried out anywhere – in as wild, far-flung and scenically stunning places as you can imagine. Another trend on the rise is live feeds and documentary-style wedding videos – both of which I am investing time and money in to offer to my clients,” she says of her new

service in response to the times. “This entails setting up a live feed Zoom-style wedding for those who want to stand on top of a mountain, rugged tor or windswept beach somewhere – alone, but with their loved ones watching in real time. I also step into the video arena to offer handheld-style documentary mixed in with breathtaking cinematic footage to create a film for all of your loved ones to feel like they were there. They can then watch this together with you via virtual film nights or – when restrictions are eased – with a celebratory film viewing.” And if you’re worried that this sounds like a long day in front of the lens, remember that “with smaller weddings generally come fewer hours”, says Verity of how low-pressure the pragmatics are in reality. FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE
In the lead-up to the wedding, amidst all the planning, preparation, decision-making and troubleshooting, it can be easy to lose focus on what comes after the big day: your marriage. After you’ve taken those vows and promised to love and support each other for better and for worse, what happens when those vows are tested?
“Going through something like this makes you realise you have to have other people around you”
“Now, it’s time to go back to a ‘normal’ life but without all the fun of planning something big that may well have been your main focus for a year or two, and this can make you feel empty or deflated,” says Tamsin Cooper (tamsincooper.co.uk), a UK-based master hypnotherapist, who works worldwide helping clients cope with all aspects of stress and anxiety-related issues including relationship problems. “Even if you have already lived together, something will have changed or shifted.” For some couples, the first year being the hardest appears to be no more than a myth, while others work through any issues or problems they’re having and are all the stronger for it. But what happens when something comes along to really test that bond? Whether it’s illness, redundancy, grief, or anything else that’s particularly difficult, we can learn from those who’ve contended with extra heartache or challenges in that first 12 months, and how they’ve come through it as a couple. “In short, we were blessed and got married at the very end of October 2017,” says Sachelle Ward, whose wedding to husband Mike was a beautiful celebration that went off without a hitch. “It was the most amazing day that, like everyone says, passed in a blur. What I didn’t expect was that it would be the start of everything changing and a year I will never forget.” Her tale, which weaves through heartache, loss and hope, is a story of strength and love, with her marriage and family at the centre. “Originally we brought our wedding forward due to my husband’s nan, the matriarch of the family, being diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time,” explains Sachelle. “We all knew this would be the last battle her body would take. Her birthday was at the end of October so we decided we wanted it as close to this as possible so she could be a part of our big day too.” Sadly, having her at the wedding was not meant to be as she had a fall six weeks before the big day, which then made her bed-bound. As Sachelle and Mike continued to prepare for their wedding, she remembers one particularly poignant moment. “I will always remember my dad’s reaction when I took him to look at our wedding venue before the big day,” she says. “He looked upon it with wide-eyed wonder and said ‘If you can’t have a good day here, I don’t think you ever will!’” Their October wedding was a gorgeous day of celebration for the couple – “everything was thought of, from delicious food and drink right down to spare shoes for tired dancing feet” – and they began to settle into their first few weeks of wedded bliss, when everything changed. “The month following the wedding, I got a call I will never forget, from the father of one of my bridesmaids and closest friends, saying she was fighting for her life on life support,” says Sachelle. “It was touch and go but by some miracle, she started to pull through. She had a long struggle back to health, which resulted in them finding out she had also had a stroke while being in an induced coma. Thankfully, she had someone watching over her and has gone on to make the most of life, still full of silliness and laughs.” So, November was tough… and then came December and Christmas, a time that Sachelle always tried to make magical for her loved ones. Sadly, Mike’s nan passed away at her home at the beginning of the month. “We said goodbye to an incredible woman,” says Sachelle. Then, three days before her first Christmas as a married woman, Sachelle and her family were dealt another tragic blow with her dad’s cancer diagnosis. “Right there in that hospital I took a vow to myself to be strong for them all,” she says. “I held my dad and explained the situation as he didn’t quite get that he wouldn’t get better. I honestly cannot tell you what happened that Christmas, we just tried to make it special for our son and my sister’s children.”
133
feature | FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE
Having been married just two months at this point, Sachelle reflects on her relationship with her Mike. “I have always been fiercely independent, but there were times when I broke and it all came tumbling out to Mike,” she says. “It did help to hear things from his point of view. He is always the ‘super chilled nothing fazes me’ type of person, so to know he went through things too helped us both, and we worked on trying to communicate.” “You and your partner will see things very differently from each other,” explains Tamsin. “You may be happily joined at the hip but you do not share the same brain, the same mind. They will have very different opinions from you.” Mike was there for Sachelle through all the difficult times to come. “My amazing, courageous, loving, caring and silly dad carried on for three rounds of treatment before they said it was not effective any longer. He passed at his request, at home with the people he loved all holding him, after a short battle that saw him take his last breath on Good Friday,” she says. “I really feel for my husband as I cannot tell you what I was, or where my head was during that first year. I think I just disconnected from everyone, apart from our son who turned two that year. I think grief is such a personal thing to go through, and at the time I was just going through it one day at a time in the only way I could.” “When we are faced with a major life change, it can throw us totally into uncertainty, and this will cause our brains to fire stress impulses,” explains Tamsin. “We unconsciously enter into the fear or flight mode and this can affect our relationship with our partner. We may become emotional, stressed, argue, show anger, lack of consideration, or withdraw into ourselves and become non-communicative.” When looking back at whether their relationship changed during this first difficult year, Sachelle says: “I think having been so independent, to go through something like this it makes you realise you have to have other people around you. It made me feel still connected to someone in the wake of such a loss. It was another bond.” Taking time to talk, communicate and listen is a healthy way to work through your emotions, says Tamsin. “Set aside time to talk; it is so easy to argue or have a disagreement in the moment, but emotions then take over and rational behaviour can go out the window. Take the time out to discuss any problems or worries you may be having or feeling, and be prepared to listen to your partner’s problems and worries too,” she says. It’s something Sachelle agrees with. “When you are ready, talk about it. Someone out there will know what you are going through, not exactly but in some way. Also, don’t be disheartened if you don’t get the responses you would like from people, it’s a tough topic for people to address and talk about.” Although it was an incredibly difficult year, Sachelle says some of her fondest memories were also made during that time, and her family would say the same. “I am sure we made the best out of what we had and kept on going,” she says. And as for her relationship with Mike? “We have now been together for eight years, married for three and have a mischievous little four-year-old named Archer William – William after both his greatgrandads,” she reveals. “I didn’t look at my wedding photos for almost two years. However, time moves on and so must we. I am forever grateful we married when

Acknowledge things are changing Sometimes we can get caught up in fighting against a change even when
that change is out of our control. Acknowledge each other’s thoughts and feelings and reassure each other to deal with the change together. Don’t fear stress Even a good change can cause stress; remember that stress is your body’s way of dealing with change, and remind your partner of this if they are the one experiencing the stress. Keep to your regular schedules Keeping life as normal as possible during the change will help you both to stay grounded and balanced. Beautiful love stories from across Cornwall

READY FOR LOVE
From sea shanties to landscape-inspired colours, Beth and John’s intimate cliffside wedding was full of fun and Cornish character Having briefly dated in the latter stages of secondary school, Beth and John’s romance rekindled years later while out with mutual friends during a memorable New Year’s Eve in Truro; a romance that later led to a proposal. “After a coastal path walk to Penberth Cove, we found a secluded spot on the rocks to eat,” recalls Beth of the moment in June 2019. “As I took my first mouthful of pasty, John decided that would be a good time to pop the question. I couldn’t stop thinking about how I was going to swallow the huge mouthful of pastry in time to answer! John had hidden the ring box in his backpack along with prosecco and plastic wine glasses. After I said ‘yes’, we had a toast and John went straight in the sea to cool down his proposal nerves!” she remembers. “It was really important for our wedding to be a reflection of us and to celebrate in a laidback environment,” says Beth of their venue choice. “We both love the rugged setting of St Agnes and the cliffside garden at The Driftwood Spars shows off the scenery of old mine shafts, cliff faces and the sea. We didn’t want to take the attention off these details so tried to keep everything neutral and went along with a ‘St Agnes’ colour scheme of yellow gorse and purple heather.” Beth’s handmade silk and lace gown and John’s pale green linen jacket and grey-blue trousers perfectly conveyed the pared-back palette, while Beth’s dried flower headband complemented her dress and the colours of the garden perfectly. The couple and their families collected an assortment of clear and amber glass bottles that they dotted along the tabletops and filled with dried flowers including lavender, bunny tails, pampas grass, eucalyptus, wheat, gypsophila, barley, cotton stems and craspedia to create a beautifully rustic scene. Other handmade touches added to the bespoke look, including confetti made from petals from both mums’ gardens. “We put the confetti in small brown paper boxes tied with twine, and each person was given their individual box,” says Beth. Starting the party early with pre-ceremony drinks and canapés in the garden, guests were treated to a soundtrack by the shanty group, Stuns’ls, ahead of the sun-spilled al fresco ceremony. A feast of lobster, cod, chips, minted peas and goat’s cheese tart followed by chocolate brownie and lemon tart was served alongside the mesmerising ocean views. Keen to continue celebrating for as long as they could – and having had to cancel their band due to Covid-19 restrictions – Beth and John decided to hold a pub quiz. “This kept our guests seated and ensured that although people were in their own groups, the atmosphere remained sociable and was not segmented,” explains Beth, who also organised games of bingo and ‘higher and lower’ as pasties and cake did the rounds. “Towards the end of the night, there were about eight of us sitting together talking and listening to music,” says Beth of one of her highlights. “One of my friends asked us what our first dance song would have been. Elton John’s ‘Are You Ready For Love’ was requested and before we knew it, we were having our unofficial first dance. Once the chorus kicked in, our friends joined us. This was such a happy moment!” Determined to have the day of their dreams despite the pandemic, Beth and John were able to keep their September date as planned while working around elements such as the guest list, entertainment and catering, which was moved from an inside to outside affair. “This actually worked out better as the weather and scenery were perfect!” reflects Beth, whose advice to others is to be organised with your tasks and time. “Make a spreadsheet!” she announces. “This helped us stay on track. I took a week off work leading up to the wedding and John took half the week… I am not sure how we would have got the last things done if we hadn’t.”

MEANT TO BE
A major change of plan meant Danielle and James’ big day was a little and lovely affair, with emotions at the heart of the celebration When Danielle and James got engaged in July 2019 they started planning a wedding for 80 in an Australian vineyard, closer to where their families live. Then Covid-19 hit, leaving the couple two-and-a-half months to plan a new wedding. Researching Cornish venues online, they settled on Camel Studio. “We liked that it was dedicated to smaller weddings, so would suit our ideal of being small, intimate and modern,” explains Danielle. Planning an autumnal wedding, the couple had to rearrange plans further when guest lists were cut from 30 to 15 just weeks before their date. “Then a week before, we got told we had to have two metres between households and tables, so we changed our seating arrangements from long tables to individual tables,” explains Danielle. Of course, it all came together for the unflappable couple, who had decided “we want to get married, so we’ll make it work”. “We had stellar weather on the day,” remembers James. The couple exchanged vows on the lawn before a bespoke arch woven with autumnal flowers, which echoed the colours of the valley beyond. “We very much lucked out. I really didn’t want to compromise on being outdoors – it was a very ‘Australian’ part of the wedding, which we really wanted,” says Danielle, citing another nod to Australia being the king protea flower in her bouquet. The couple live-streamed the ceremony for their family and friends to watch – “the time difference meant it was 3am, but they got dressed up and stayed up for it!” – before canapés and an impressive lemon and elderflower cake. The couple left their guests enjoying drinks and lawn games as they went to the nearby river for photos, which was one of their favourite parts of the day. “It gave us time to relax, let it sink in, enjoy each other,” says James. “And the colours were amazing.” Their wedding feast comprised starters of “typically British cuisine” including Scotch eggs, fishcakes, and soup, mains of pan-fried chicken, pork belly and fish, and desserts of St Ives Gin cheesecake, and a Cornish take on a Guinness brownie. “The food was phenomenal,” remembers Danielle. “It was also beautifully presented, and the Avo Catering team were super understanding. We are foodies, and we loved it.” The couple had asked their families to record speeches, which were shown in-between each course. “It was an emotional roller-coaster,” says Danielle. “We were very conscious of the fact our families couldn’t be there. After every single speech, we were totally and utterly emotional, we needed a break between them!” Following the beautifully intimate meal and speeches came an unseasonably warm evening spent outside by the firepits, where the guests enjoyed homemade pizzas from Camel Studio’s renovated horsebox. A game of ‘Mr & Mrs’ followed, before the couple bid their guests farewell and retired to the bridal suite. When it comes to advice for couples in the midst of planning, Danielle affirms: “Trust the experts. We didn’t always have the capacity to make decisions quickly when guidance changed, so trust that they know what they’re doing,” she says. “As much as we hated the fact family couldn’t make it, we had an amazing day for something we hadn’t originally planned,” she continues, reflecting on their autumnal celebration. “There was no pressure on our day, we weren’t rushed anywhere.” And, as James points out: “Being with only our closest people – who’d all seen us going from friends, to dating, to engaged, to married – was so special.”

SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE
Michaela and Jake’s summer solstice wedding combined white florals, natureinspired décor and laid-back vibes under sunny Cornish skies Meeting through their mutual friend Sarah, Michaela and Jake spent the summer of 2012 together within the same social circle. “It was a summer of attending gigs, going to festivals and having sunny Cornish adventures,” says Michaela, remembering how Sarah’s matchmaking skills led to romance blossoming. “In fact, Sarah was our maid of honour for our wedding.” Looking back at a proposal that almost didn’t happen, Michaela explains: “We went travelling in December 2016, starting in Hong Kong, where my family live, for five days before heading to Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. Jake’s baggage – which, unknown to me had the engagement ring in – was delayed in transit from Dubai to Hong Kong! Luckily, it arrived a few days later, and Jake and I had some drinks and walked to Victoria Harbour. Fast forward to 3am and Jake was down on one knee proposing! We spent the next day celebrating with my relatives before setting off to our next destination.” As they began their venue search, both Michaela and Jake knew they wanted an informal celebration, so planned the legal formalities at the local registry office followed by an outdoor wedding. “We wanted a laid-back and playful wedding, and we chose to get married on the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – after many years of camping and celebrating this date with friends,” says Michaela. The couple opted for an idyllic setting overlooking the sea in Trebetherick, Polzeath, transforming a clifftop field with domes and a mobile bar. Choosing a woodland theme based on nature and simplicity, Michaela and Jake opted for trees as table names. “Our floral arrangements were predominantly white, with white roses, peonies, blue eucalyptus and veronica as well as foraged green foliage,” she says of the nature-inspired décor. “We were fortunate to have Jake’s gran as our florist. Country Flowers has been a family-run business for 35 years, and is now run by Sarah Clemes who assembled my bridal bouquet.” There were more surprises in store for the couple’s guests, who were already wowed at the setting. “For the ceremony, we gave the impression that the celebrant had not arrived,” says Michaela. “We made a few people sweat… until Jake’s best man took the centre stage and gave us away.” After the vows, guests enjoyed canapés of dim sum, fillet of beef, and duck wraps, to the sound of the newly-weds’ customised playlists that played throughout the afternoon. Enjoying drinks in the sunshine, the couple gifted their guests a unique spin on wedding favours. “Minimising waste is important to me and we decided to custom-design cups for people to use and take home as a keepsake,” she says. A hog roast kept the celebratory vibe going to the soundtrack of speeches, before the couple cut their impressive cake. As the celebrations progressed, live band Broken Down played tunes into the evening. “We both felt a little awkward about the first dance, namely because we don’t like being the centre of attention. But as our song reached the crescendo, we had confetti cannons go off and everyone joined the stage and dancing ensued!” says Michaela. “We really chanced it with the weather,” she says, looking back. “There was torrential rain the day before and after, but we were fortunate enough to experience sunshine all day followed by the most beautiful sunset surrounded by loved ones. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever, particularly during these challenging times!” She has some sage advice for couples in the midst of planning. “Make time for each other that doesn’t involve planning,” she advises. “Lean on others – people like to get involved with weddings – and, most importantly, enjoy the day. We regularly took moments to stand back to take note of what was happening around us.”

BEACHSIDE BLISS
Lucinda and Edward enjoyed a sun-kissed September celebration with the Cornish coast as their breathtaking backdrop Lucinda and Edward’s paths first collided on the dance floor more than a decade ago. “This was an unlikely start to a successful relationship given Ed’s dancing ability, but there was something that drew us together and we ended up dancing all night!” reminisces Lucinda. Their engagement was equally as memorable. “We were staying in Cornwall for New Year, where I had spent all of my family holidays since I was very young. Never ones to be put off by cold water, we went for our morning surf and Ed proposed on the beach as we were drying off afterwards. It was freezing cold and sandy, but so special,” she reveals. Forced to reschedule their May date for a September wedding due to Covid-19, the couple designed an intimate day styled on “the beautiful autumnal Cornish seaside florals with eucalyptus, sage green and lots of pale blush tones”. Lucinda arrived in unique style for the ceremony at St Enodoc Church, first transported in a Rolls-Royce before being met by two buggies at the golf course. “My dad and I hurtled across the 10th fairway towards the church on the buggies! This was definitely not how I imagined I’d arrive at my wedding, but I have to admit it was a lot of fun,” she laughs. Then came her favourite moment from the day: “standing at the altar in the church together”, she smiles. “The lead-up to the wedding had been quite stressful with so many last-minute changes to contend with, but when we finally made it to that point, we just felt so happy and relaxed. We were finally getting married!” Though they weren’t allowed any music or hymns at the nuptials, the postceremony celebrations provided a stirring soundtrack. “We were so lucky because some musicians from the local brass band played for us in the churchyard, so we were serenaded as we walked out,” says Lucinda. “They also played for us during our drinks reception. It was a beautiful, sunny day and it was so lovely to stand outside with our families and listen to the gentle music. It was all very serene!” The wedding party then walked to the beach for photos and some treasured sandbetween-the-toes time together. “The sunlight was shimmering on the sea and the beach was surprisingly empty for a Saturday in September,” recalls Lucinda. “We even dipped our toes in the water. It was lovely to have a moment on the beach to take everything in.” The newly-weds were then driven to The Point in Polzeath – “who saved the day and stood in with only a couple of days notice when our initial venue cancelled due to Covid concerns” – for their 30-person reception, where drinks and canapés were enjoyed on the terrace before the wedding breakfast. “Planning a wedding in the middle of a pandemic was far from straightforward and we had to adapt our plans so many times,” reflects Lucinda. “For a long time, we thought it wasn’t going to be possible to get married in 2020 at all, and it was only really on the morning of our wedding that we both finally realised it was going to happen!” Despite the last-minute change of venue and new Covid restrictions that had just been introduced, such as an earlier curfew, it all came together perfectly on the day. “We were so lucky with all of our amazing suppliers who were so flexible and supportive,” she reflects. “The day itself was so different from what we had originally planned but we wouldn’t change any of it. We felt like the luckiest people in the world to have a sunny day in our favourite place with a small number of our closest family and friends.”

THAT SPECIAL FEELING
Briony and Simon’s winter wedding was a perfect celebration of love against a rustic-luxe backdrop “Simon proposed during a chilly walk along the Cornish coastal path by Stepper Point,” says Briony. “It was the best Christmas present ever!” The couple set about planning a big wedding for September 2020; however, the Covid-19 restrictions meant they had to move it to November and cut numbers down to 30 and then 15. Opting for the rustic venue of Nancarrow, their planning took another twist days before the wedding. “With less than a week to go, we had to move the wedding again to a day earlier to avoid the second lockdown,” explains Briony. “We luckily managed to reorganise everything within a few hours – the venue and our suppliers were absolute legends!” Letting the venue’s natural décor shine through, the couple opted to keep their styling minimal. “We didn’t have a theme or colour scheme as such – as Nancarrow is so beautiful and rustic, there was no need. We wanted to keep everything as natural as possible; the beautiful flowers and floral displays were in keeping with the season, along with our menu for the wedding breakfast.” Their wedding ceremony featured one of Briony’s favourite moments of the day: when she and Simon read their own vows to each other. “Although I was nervous at the writing stage, on the day it was really special and I felt like it made our ceremony a lot more personal,” she reminisces. After the ceremony, the couple were showered with confetti, and celebrated with glasses of fizz with their guests in the beautiful courtyard. Then, moving to the Old Mill, the celebrations continued with an “incredible” wedding breakfast comprising nibbles of crab scone, arancini, and beef and barley doughnuts; starters of agnolotti; mains of lamb saddle, lamb belly, and seasonal vegetables; and dessert of apple tart tatin with cider cream. “We felt very spoilt, it was the best meal we’ve ever had!” says Briony. Guests’ appetites were also sated with a cheeseboard, truffles and a two-tiered sponge with homemade blackberry jam filling and a white chocolate Italian meringue icing, made from locally sourced seasonal ingredients. “We all sat on one long table and we stayed there for the whole evening. It was perfect,” she recalls. “It almost felt like a Christmas dinner with all the family before the pandemic.” As a lovely surprise for Briony and Simon, their friends and family who weren’t able to be there on the day recorded video messages that were played after the speeches: a poignant and touching moment to end their special day. “Planning a wedding during the Covid-19 pandemic was tough!” says Briony, looking back on the experience and imparting some sage advice. “We just kept focusing on the most important thing, which was that we were getting married, no matter what. A big party with family and friends can always come later. If your original plans need to change for whatever reason, try your best to embrace it positively and keep going!”

PICTURE PERFECT
A romantic beach proposal culminated in a relaxed and gorgeous summer wedding for Olivia and Joe “Joe proposed on an early morning walk on the beach in Cawsand where we were staying with my family for my birthday,” reveals Olivia. “It’s a busy village in the peak of August yet Joe managed to make the only witness my family’s labrador, Charlie! We celebrated with our close family that night in one of the village pubs and knew immediately that we were going to have a Cornwall-based wedding.” Falling for the rustic charm of Freathy Farmhouse, interior designer Olivia planned their day with a clear vision in mind. “We knew we wanted the day to be relaxed with a bit of a bohemian feel to it and always kept this in mind when looking for inspiration,” she says. Drawing on a warm colour scheme of oranges and greens, they used as many local suppliers as they could for the table décor, props and napkins, which Olivia styled the day before. “It was a lot of hard work, but I had so much fun seeing everything that had been in my head for two years come to life!” she beams. “We wanted the day to be very ‘us’, with small nods to our relationship and to people that couldn’t be there,” says Olivia of the overarching theme of their day. Joe’s cufflinks featured a Welsh dragon to represent one side of his family and the Arsenal FC shield to pay homage to his grandad, while “my something old and blue was my mum’s engagement ring from my dad”, says Olivia. “It was all those little details that made it special to us.” Unusually, their August bank holiday weekend date also happened to be one of the hottest of the year and, following their intimate ceremony, guests mingled in the gardens with Pimm’s, bubbly and Cornish cream teas in the blazing sunshine. Then came the wedding breakfast – an “amazing” assortment of street food including smoked vegan tofu, Cornish crab tacos, pulled pork rolls, and various sharing grazing and charcuterie boards. A trio of wedding cakes were served as dessert alongside a stack of delicious vegan doughnuts. Olivia and Joe then headed to Rame Head for photos, allowing them time to bask in the moment. “When we arrived with our photographers we were greeted by wild ponies and incredible views! It was perfect,” reflects Olivia. In the evening, a live band and silent disco – which proved to be one of their personal highlights – completed the day’s celebrations in memorable style. “We continued the party all weekend by having a beach party and campout on the Sunday night,” adds Olivia. “It’s hard to pick a particular favourite moment,” she reflects. “But walking down to the ceremony barn and seeing all our family and friends from all different parts of our life come together in a place that was so special to us was amazing. The song playing as I walked down the aisle was a pre-recording of Joe playing an Einaudi song on the piano. Only we knew at the time that it was him, which made it extra special.” By word of advice, she says: “Try to focus on what you want and what represents you as a couple, rather than what you feel you ‘should’ do. This is your celebration!”

COME RAIN OR SHINE
Danielle and James enjoyed a mini tour of west Cornwall’s most scenic spots during their autumnal wedding full of good food, good people and laughter “We met in 2009 through mutual friends who brought James along to my birthday party,” says Danielle of their chance first encounter. “A week later we all went to Glastonbury Festival together where we realised there was something special between us as we danced the days and nights away.” The couple’s engagement took place during an equally memorable moment on the other side of the world. “In Australia, James took me for a walk on the beach and to the backdrop of whales and dolphins jumping in the surf he got down on one knee and asked me to grow old with him,” remembers Danielle. Deciding on a wedding of two parts, the pair chose the sublime setting of Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens for their ceremony followed by the gastro delights of Ben’s Kitchen in St Ives for their reception. “Choosing the colour scheme was a bit of an organic process,” explains Danielle of the way everything naturally came together to form the look and feel of their day. “When James got his suit tailored he tried on a burnt orange tie that looked incredible with his blue suit and was perfect for an autumn wedding. I love dusky colours like toffees and blush pinks, so from there the colour scheme developed with the help of our amazing florist.” Booking accommodation in Mousehole, Danielle and James made the most of the beautiful Mount’s Bay setting, departing with tradition by waking up together on the morning of the wedding “so we could have time just the two of us before the events started”. Being transported in style via a vintage campervan for their al fresco ceremony overlooking the bay, the newly-weds then enjoyed champagne and canapés in the sculpture garden in the company of their guests. “It was brilliant sunshine, when from nowhere a torrential flash downpour rained down on us. We all ran for cover when someone shouted, ‘the cake!’, which was outside,” says Danielle of the sudden reception deluge. “My stepdad saved the day and sacrificed himself to get it, getting soaked in the process. All the guests, James and I just couldn’t stop laughing! It goes to show that the weather doesn’t matter on your wedding day, it’s the love and laughter that surrounds you that makes it!” she smiles. Danielle and James headed off for photos before relocating to St Ives where they joined their guests for an epicurean adventure at Ben’s Kitchen. A tasting menu of locally sourced Cornish produce presented them with Newlyn crab, steamed sole with herb beurre blanc, and hake with truffled potato, wild mushroom and leek, rounded off with a delectable dessert of hazelnut, chocolate brownie, crémeux, dulce de leche and praline ice cream. “We loved the moment after the ceremony when our guests lined up and threw confetti. It was the moment when we thought: ‘Wow – we are actually married! We have done it and here are our loved ones all celebrating with us,’” says Danielle of a particularly standout memory. “Try not to stress because on the day no matter how much you plan every detail, if things go wrong you won’t care,” she gives as word of advice. “The only thing that will matter is that you are getting married to the person you love.”

NOTES ON A WEDDING The Buffa lo
Surprise, surprise! Think outside the box when it comes to entertainment - and maybe concoct a memorable surprise for your guests. This could be a pre-rehearsed dance incorporating your bridesmaids and groomsmen, a surprise performance roaming the tables during dinner or an interactive evening band. Maisie
Picture this. Dot photos of yourselves around the reception showing the story of your relationship. Instead of table names, perhaps choose images of you both on holiday, or places that mean something to you. Jessica
It’s all in the detail. If you embrace monogramming, customise guests’ napkins with their initials. This makes for a really lovely touch and looks beautiful. Jessica

Celebrate with a celebrant. A celebrantled ceremony is the ultimate way to personalise your wedding. The celebrant takes time to get an understanding of you as a couple, your experiences and the love you have for one another, and the attention to detail and tailored speech will be remembered for years to come. Favourite favours. Guest favours are an ideal place to bring in personal touches. Perhaps there is a cause that is close to your heart, such as ecology, in which case gifting wild flower seeds would be perfect. Jessica
Order of the day. Don’t be afraid to change the order of the day if you want to. If you’re morning people, you might fancy getting married in the morning and serving a cooked breakfast for your wedding feast, or if you’re night owls, why not have a candlelit evening ceremony? Rebecca

Speak up. If you’re not a fan of traditional speeches, why not incorporate traditions from other cultures? At Swedish weddings, they often don’t have speeches; instead anybody can get up at any time, and say something personal about the happy couple. Jessica
Wonderful weekend. If you’re having a multi-day celebration, plan some events for the day before or after your wedding. You could arrange a scavenger hunt where guests have to answer questions about you both to find places and prizes, host a movie night showing your favourite film, or how about an en masse yoga class? Jessica Making music. Consider your playlist for the day carefully, and ensure you include lots of songs that mean something to you both. If you’re lucky enough to be a musician then don’t be scared to show off your talent and perhaps write your own first dance. Rebecca Signature drink. Get creative and design your own bespoke cocktail to serve at the reception. Not only is this fun for you to make, it’s a lovely personal touch for your guests. Jessica Fan mail. The decoration could be an illustration that reflects the decor, or colour-match it to the rest of the aesthetic of your day. Jessica Food glorious food.
