Secluded, exclusive and oh-so beautiful, Treseren offers an incredibly romantic setting for an intimate wedding. Translated as ‘homestead under the stars’, the Georgian country house lies in the Trewithen countryside near the rugged north coast, offering a palpable away-from-it-all vibe and abundance of atmosphere. There’s a collection of spaces to exchange vows, make merry and relax amongst the two acres of scenic grounds featuring south-facing terraces, secret garden pathways, an organic children’s play area and firepits for toasting marshmallows. Accommodating up to 12 guests, the elegantly styled house is a dream setting for an exclusive house party with its light-filled spaces, period features and versatile Wedding Room for ceremonies and feasting. The latest addition, Loveday’s, a decadent cocktail bar featuring vintage furnishings, a glamorous gold leaf ceiling and playful décor is a luxurious space for guests to unwind and sample the bespoke cocktail list in the most sumptuous of surrounds.

In recognition of its spectacular setting and service, the venue has recently scooped Cornwall Tourism’s Gold Award for Wedding Venue of the Year for the second year in a row. “2021 was our busiest year to date, so to be recognised for our consistency in delivering magical small weddings is a huge honour and a testament to the hard work and passion shown by every single member of the Treseren team,” says owner, Emma Caddis. “We feel so terribly honoured to be involved in the most special day of people’s lives, creating beautiful small weddings is an absolute joy.”

LOVE AT PORT ELIOT A magical corner of Cornwall, where the Grade-I listed ancestral seat of the 11th Earl of St Germans and 100 acres of Humphry Repton landscaped gardens sit untouched and secluded from the world, Port Eliot is rich in natural beauty and palpable romance. Beyond the house, with its long and fascinating history, and the ancient St Germans Priory Church, the estate’s treasures include vast rhododendron gardens, majestic woodland, a maze and arboretum. Then there’s the 18th century orangery where the Wed team had the privilege of spending the day shooting our bridal fashion story, Darling Buds. An incredibly romantic setting for a wedding ceremony, couples can exchange vows beneath chandeliers entwined with flowers as sunshine streams through the windows. Flanked by a walled garden, celebrations may spill outside into the picturesque grounds before feasting and festivities in a bespoke marquee with sweeping views across the estate or a beautiful 72-foot handmade yurt situated on the bowling green. With literary associations ranging from Daphne Du Maurier to Winston Graham’s Poldark, Port Eliot offers a beguiling setting for this all-important chapter in your very own love story. porteliot.co.uk

WORDS OF LOVE… “Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is.” Louis de Bernières

RAISING THE BAR Treat your guests to a delectable drinks menu and top-notch service with Partington’s Bar Co, a new, exclusive mobile bar service. Bringing the liquid celebrations to venues across Cornwall, the team tailors their pop-up offerings to suit your specific tastes and requirements, whether you’re hosting a garden party, marquee reception or beach shindig. Handcrafted from local recycled wood, the charming bar will blend seamlessly into your celebration, while their rustic drinks ladder presents a stunning display for your favourite concoctions. Pick from a standard bar (set up for card and cash payments), fully pre-paid bar (where you pay in advance for your guests’ drinks) or a partial bar tab (providing a free bar up to a prepaid limit) before deliberating what drinks you’d like served up in style. You might want a statement welcome drink, a champagne tower, a signature cocktail hour or multiple rounds of reception drinks throughout the evening – the choice is yours. And, with green credentials including stocking re-usable glasses and compostable straws alongside recycling as many used bottles and cans as possible, Partington’s is a sustainable and stylish choice for a party to remember. partingtonsbarcompany.co.uk

HEAVEN ON EARTH

Picture this: a Napoleonic Fort sitting on a Cornish clifftop, rolling lawns and wildflowerfilled gardens slipping down to the sea and a private beach for loved up wanders at the water’s edge. Nestled in a tucked-away corner of the Rame Peninsula with soul-stirring First Light Wedding Photography

sea views, Polhawn Fort really is the stuff of dreams. A personal and highly flexible approach is key to the venue’s appeal. Whether you’re planning a simple, intimate wedding or a seriously stylish affair on a grand-scale, the exclusive-use venue makes the perfect canvas. What’s more, its magic is year-round: in the summerhouse followed by frolics on the sand and sundowners on the roof garden terrace. A winter wedding is equally enchanting, with vows beneath the vaulted ceilings and twinkling lights of the grand Napoleonic hall and candlelit celebrations while a log fire crackles and waves crash at the shores below. Complete with a drawbridge and spiral staircase, Polhawn Fort is as unique as it is captivating. And, with accommodation for up to 16 in cosy, comfortable rooms with views across the sea, a group of your nearest and dearest can savour this extraordinary spot for a brilliantly memorable stay of two, three or four days. polhawnfort.com

the Cornish countryside. Hugged by traditional Cornish hedges, the venue comprises four acres of vineyards, pastures and orchard with a courtyard and 18th century threshing barn at its heart. Ceremonies might take place amidst the exposed stone walls and twinkling beams of the barn or beneath the spectacular arbour overlooking the pond. A dreamy option for a summer celebration, you might even follow up your al fresco vows with a feast in the

Delight your guests with carefully curated menus brimming with locally sourced ingredients: think grilled half lobster and Cornish Yarg gratin, fillet of Cornish sea bass and a sumptuous choice of barbecue and buffet options washed down with Knightor’s exceptional collection of wines. Up to 12 guests can be accommodated in Knightor Manor, while the newly-weds can savour an overnight stay in Orchard Barn, a modern studio barn tucked away amidst the

DESIGNS FROM DOWN UNDER If you’re a fan of Aussie bridal style, then you won’t want to miss the upcoming Made With Love trunk show at St Ives Bridal Boutique. A firm favourite with brides the world over for its modern cuts, fashion-forward accents and gorgeous quality, the Australian label has seen brides flocking to the Cornish seaside boutique over recent months. Running from 25th May – 5th June, the trunk show comprises an excellent opportunity to browse and try on an extensive selection of the winning designs in a range of sizes. Brides seeking something contemporary and curve-hugging will love new dress Harry with its plunging back, detachable train and luxe French crepe silhouette, while the delicate bows, floral lace and stunning train of Elsie blends whimsy and timeless elegance for modern romantics. Then there’s the 3D floral detailing of Remi and the intricate lace of Louie – choose from hip-hugging to A-line with pockets. Prepare to be spoilt for choice at this exclusive event. And, if romantic gowns with a free-spirited edge are the stuff of your bridal dreams – we’re talking puff sleeves, voluminous skirts and contemporary finishes – then don’t miss the new Willowby by Watters collection which is now available at the boutique alongside a hand-picked collection by Eliza Jane Howell and Rosa Clara. stivesbridalboutique.co.uk

wed’s WISH LIST

SOLE MATES The new collection from bridal shoe designer Charlotte Mills has landed – and it’s bursting with gloss, glitter and gorgeousness! We love them all, from the silk knotted styles sprinkled with pearls and the elegant suede numbers in soft shades to the block heels dusted with micro pearls and glitter. There’s even leopard embossed pearl leather heels and dancefloorready sneakers for sparkle – and comfort – for the evening shenanigans. All Charlotte’s shoes come complete with her signature details: an original silver sixpence embedded in the shoe and the traditional bridal rhyme ‘Something old, Something new…’ delicately embossed on the soles. What’s more, you can carry your big day essentials in coolly coordinated style thanks to the collection of matching clutch bags. charlottemills.com

WRITTEN IN THE SAND Delicately textured and imbued with personal meaning, it’s little wonder that Justin Duance’s sandcast pendants are growing in popularity with brides seeking a special piece to wear on their wedding day. As versatile as they are beautiful, you might choose a pendant cast in sand from a beach which holds a special place in your heart – perhaps the beach of the proposal or location of the big day itself. You might even have your wedding rings cast in the same sand. We love the simplicity of the disc pendant – a treasured piece to wear for any occasion and a gorgeous gift idea to boot. justind.co.uk

COASTAL CHIC Tucked away on the winding streets of Mevagissey, Coastal Bridal offers bridal treasures galore in the scenic setting of a Cornish fishing village. Home to designers Victoria Kay and True Bride, brides can look forward to everything from fresh-from-a-fairytale gowns and vintage-inspired designs to pared-back modern cuts. The arrival of a flurry of new gowns by British label Victoria Kay sees the collection growing ever dreamier. From minimalist to highly embellished, the new gowns offer classic romance through to contemporary style, featuring off-the-shoulder necklines, exquisite floral lace trains, plunging backs and bodices shimmering with sequins and beads. What’s more, the boutique’s close working relationship with the designer means each gown can be customised to your taste: whether it’s adding straps or sleeves or tweaking the train, you can look forward to a bespoke look tailored entirely to your vision. coastalbridal.co.uk

RING AWAKENING Seeking an engagement or wedding ring with minimal impact on the planet? From recycled gold to vintage treasures, here’s what to consider on your quest for a sustainably sourced ring to love forever words Hannah May

RING AWAKENING

While sustainability is a key consideration for many couples in the

Justin Duance

throes of wedding planning, the environmental impact of the rings can often be overlooked. Happily, there’s some dazzling options to suit all tastes and budgets from jewellers who are passionate about creating pieces with maximum impact on the eye and minimal impact on the planet. From rings crafted from recycled materials to sourcing pre-loved treasures, here’s our mini guide to sustainable ring shopping.

Material world “The best way to know your ring is sustainable is to ask about the materials it has been made with,” says Janie Wolverson at Erin Cox (erincox.co.uk), who uses recycled gold as standard. “As we handcraft all our jewellery we know where the metals and gems have been sourced and are more than happy to talk about each piece!” Designer-maker Corrinne Eira Evans (corrinneeiraevans.com) explains the main two options. “There’s recycled – which is where old jewellery, metal scraps and findings are melted back down and reformed into workable material for the jeweller to reuse. This is an amazing way to be environmentally friendly as there’s no mining involved,” she says. “Then there’s Fairtrade or Fairmined. This is another great alternative, supporting

Emily Nixon

miners with the best health and safety from source and making sure they’re paid a fair wage. You can check Fairtrade registered jewellers on fairtrade.org.uk.” Erin is a proudly registered Fairtrade designer, with each piece bearing the Fairtrade logo alongside her hallmark. “If you are looking to buy Fairtrade, ask to see the hallmark as only makers who follow very stringent guidelines are registered to work with Fairtrade gold will be able to have this mark applied,” suggests Janie. “Our commitment to ethical and sustainable sourcing is beautifully demonstrated by our ring cast from 100% refined recycled 18ct yellow gold,” says Chloe Wild from Emily Nixon (emilynixon.co.uk). Created in Cornwall by Emily and cast using the traditional lost wax process, the six brilliant white diamonds are also ethically sourced for compliance with the Kimberley Certification Process and Responsible Jewellery Code of Practices. Tor Harrison

“All the gold we use is 100% recycled and because we cast our jewellery ourselves, we do lots of the recycling in-house too,” says Jamila Hirtenstein from Justin Duance (justind.co.uk), who also extols the virtues of shopping

Justin Duance

locally for added provenance and benevolence. “Shopping independent and local has huge impact on the sustainability of our communities,” she says. “It means that your money is circulating among the little fish. Shopping small comes hand in hand with individuality and care, as real love has been put into each piece we make.” “Our ethics go beyond the materials we use and we’re always looking for ways we can reduce our impact on the planet, from our sustainable cork ring boxes to our morning coffee. Being awarded Plastic Free Status by Plastic Free Penzance and Surfers Against Sewage is a sign of the changes we have made to minimise our plastic pollution,” she adds.

Ethical gems The stones, however, can be a more problematic issue when it comes to buying your wedding rings, which Jamila further explains. “There’s no Fairtrade certification for gemstones, so there has to be an element of trust involved,” she concedes. “We have made a pledge to only use fully traced gemstones and diamonds in our jewellery, which means that we know where the stone was mined, cut and polished. Once the stones are with us, we continue to keep a record of them right up until they are on your finger.”

them we are seeing the change filtering through. Our white diamonds come from CanadaMark, whose stones over 0.5ct come with a code so you can trace them yourself on their website.” “Another excellent option – and a direction we want to move more towards – is using recycled stones,” continues Jamila. “We are really excited to now have a reliable source of vintage diamonds that were cut by hand in centuries past. Old mine cut diamonds twinkle differently from modern brilliant cuts. They have more character and pair beautifully with our sandcast rings, making really individual rings.” Salt and pepper diamonds are currently a popular choice, not only for their unique appearance but also as they require less resources to mine. Whatever your personal preferences, exercising a degree of due diligence should result in you finding the perfect stone from a sustainable source.

Pre-loved treasures Of course, you don’t have to buy or commission a piece outright, as purchasing something pre-loved or reworking pieces you already own might also solve the sustainability quandary. “When purchasing vintage jewellery, be aware

the claws on settings will probably be worn and the band may be under more tension from years of love and so will need investment in the near future,” warns Corrinne. “When shopping, make sure to run your fingers over the claws – any catching or grittiness may be the sign of a loose claw.” “Another option for keeping your rings sustainable is to use your own materials,” says Janie. “Erin is able to remodel your own gold, platinum and stones, or cast the metal in molten wedding ring moulds.” By reusing a vintage or heirloom piece, not only are you extending its story and lifeline, but you’re also guaranteed a beautifully bespoke end product. “We love turning pre-loved jewellery into new and exciting pieces that suit the personality and

style of the wearer,” says Jamila. “Tastes change, and jewellery carries so much sentiment, it’s really special to be able to give a sentimental piece a new lease of life.” “It might sound a bit cheeky, but it can be worth asking members of your family if they have any old jewellery they would contribute as a wedding gift – some of the most special pieces we have made have been from amalgamations of family heirlooms,” she suggests.

FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION

After the gloom of recent years, couples are rewriting the rule book when it comes to wedding styling and entertainment, taking the opportunity to immerse their guests in a sensory experience which is both memorable and reflective of who they are. Taking the funfair as its theme, this styled shoot embraces this movement with gusto. “Weddings do not need to be white, cream or muted colours,” asserts Sophie Walker-Sunderhauf of The Little Details by Sophie who coordinated and styled the shoot. “This shoot is designed to show you that you can break the rules on colours – you don’t need to follow trends or traditions!” The lovingly restored Regency climes of Roswarne House makes the dream canvas for the riot of colour and playful detail. Shades of lilac and punchy pink meet pops of yellow and tangerine in the florals which bring glorious colour to the tablescape, the ceremony setting and the staircase, while the florals, ruffles and marbled tier of the cake exemplify the ‘more is more’ aesthetic. Colourful stationery, funfair ticket place names, popcorn and candyfloss add to the theme; and, complete with a carousel horse, a sugary pink VW campervan photo booth makes a fun-filled focal point for the celebrations. The bride and groom perfectly carry the exuberant vibe in their brilliantly individual ensembles. Cascading with lavender ruffles, the bride’s voluminous gown is as romantic as it is playful, while the groom’s modish pink check suit complements the vibrant scene with fashion-forward edge.

NATURAL BEAUTY

Tucked away in a leafy corner of west Cornwall only a ten-minute drive from the sweeping sands of Gwithian, Stennack Farm offers the dream of a country wedding without forgoing those loved up moments on the water’s edge. Here, the versatile venue makes the setting for a modern rural romance, where a muted palette of cream and taupe meets soft pinks and accents of rich burgundy. Seamlessly blending into the warm tones and textures of the barn setting and surrounding meadows, the linens and wooden charger plates of the tablescape nestle gorgeous florals of fresh pink, peach and cream, while crystal candleholders and glassware add a luxurious edge. A stunning installation of foliage flecked with petals above adds drama, as does the texture-rich floating cake. While the groom looks every inch the contemporary country gent in a tweed suit paired with a burgundy bow tie, the bride exemplifies the romance and elegance of the scene in her off-theshoulder gown embellished with floral lace and dainty jewels.

Does your marriage mark the creation of a new blended family? Here are some love-filled ideas to involve the children and make your family wedding unforgettable words Elizabeth Chester

WE ARE FAMILY

If you have children or stepchildren, your wedding not only marks a new beginning for you as a married couple – but as a new blended family. And, as you make all those key wedding decisions from the colour of the flowers to the flavour of the cake, you’ll need to consider the important question of how you involve your children or stepchildren in the big day. “In the UK, about 16% of dependent children are living in blended families where a household has stepparents and step-siblings,” says independent celebrant, Sabine Smith of Perfect Day Ceremonies (perfectdayceremonies.co.uk). There are elements of the wedding and, crucially the ceremony, where you can ensure the day is truly special for everyone. “For a modern blended family, a celebrant can be instrumental to ensure that each member of the family is valued and to enable them to build strong bonds for the future,” says Sabine. “Your wedding ceremony is at the heart of your special day and for me, as a celebrant, I am all for choices and creating memories for you for years to come.” Giving children a role for the ceremony is key to making it joyful and memorable for them. “It will build a beautiful bond for the future and a great sense of accomplishment,” she says. “When they look back on the day in years to come, they will remember and love the role they played – standing by your side.” Here, Sabine shares her top tips to ensure every member of the family feels included in your wedding ceremony.

Perfect blend “A sand ceremony is a beautiful way to demonstrate the coming together of the individual members of the family to create a new blended family. It not only symbolises the unity of the couple, but also the unity of their children. By joining together the different coloured sands into a vessel of choice, it symbolises that every member of the family has significance. As each grain of sand is poured, it instantly blends, signifying that you will never be able to separate them again, joining together the members as one blended family. My personal favourite!”

Plant a tree “What could be more sustainable and in touch with nature than planting a tree together? This is a real favourite for nature-loving couples and their children. Together, you will nurture and care for it, watching the tree grow over the years alongside your family. The tree may be planted at the venue or at your family’s favourite place.”

Words of love “Everyone loves hearing words of appreciation and love. Couples can create personal vows and promises for each other and lovingly involve the children who are adapting to being part of a new blended family, along with a personal gift or a piece of bespoke jewellery. I love it when I see a handwritten ‘thank you’ or ‘love you’ note placed into a time capsule or memory box which you make together. Getting this time capsule out on special occasions such as anniversaries or significant life events is pure joy.”

Join hands “A handfasting ceremony is a perfect way to symbolise the coming together of the different family members to tie the knot on the day. Each member of the family places a different colour ribbon over joined hands during the ceremony. With the help of the celebrant, you will create a lasting visual keepsake and memory to treasure in the future. This is a joy-filled and colourful way to celebrate your special day which will make everyone feel included.”

Get creative “If you and your blended family members are the creative types, why not create a painting together on the day using your favourite colours and textures? Like the sand ceremony, the result will be colourful and create a visual symbol of the blended family you have created.”

Meaningful memento “A fingerprint tree is a symbolic ritual I recently used to show the commitment of

85

the entire family towards the new blended family. Holly Collings Photography

Every member of the family placed their name and a print of their thumb onto the family tree to create a memorable keepsake of the day and the ceremony. This can be replicated and sent to close family members as a loving memory of this special moment.”

Role play “Children love having a special and important job during the wedding ceremony of their parent, such as pageboy or flower girl/boy. Another idea is allowing the children to sign the commitment certificate after the ceremony. However, I believe the most important responsibility for a child of a blended family is being the ring bearer and taking care of the bands which symbolise eternity and remind the couple every day of their love for one another. It will make them feel proud and instil a feeling of being part of this unity and love.”

THE AWW FACTOR Celebrate the creation of your newly made family with these sweet W-day ideas.

A cake’s the tops A very touching addition to a wedding cake is toppers of children on both sides of the newly made family. Who doesn’t want to see themselves immortalised in fondant? As long as the cake has sufficient circumference, what’s stopping you piling those toppers high to incorporate your entire family unit?

Family flash mob If your blended family is in the realms of double figures, how about you all perform as a flash mob? Not only will this bring a smile to your guests’ faces, but it’s also sure to make the performers feel pretty special too!

Designs on you Buttonholes are a brilliant way of uniting a group of various ages and sizes. Traditional buttonholes can be worn by the entire family to bring together Holly Collings Photography

all sides of both families. Or a modern take on the buttonhole can be badges – these may work well for younger members of the family and can even be crafted in a bonding session before the big day itself.

Lead the way Nothing jerks those tears quite like the arrival of mini-mes ahead of the happy couple. A children’s wedding procession could work wonders ahead of the ceremony or as a welcome to the wedding breakfast.

Twin-set And talking of mini-mes, dressing little ones to match the bride and groom is another sure-fire way to make the children feel special and involved, as well as showing how united they are and how much they all mean to you. We love the idea of little maids in mini-me versions of the bride’s wedding dress.

10 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING Embrace an eco-conscious wedding by cutting down on waste and designing a day with sustainability in mind words Lucy Higgins

10 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING

We know that green is the new black, with more and more couples choosing to plan a thoughtful, ethical and environmentally sound wedding. And, as this advice from the experts reveals, your dream day can be every bit as stylish as it is sustainable.

Push the envelope “Sending save the dates by email is a cheap and ecologically sound way of getting your date out there. You can do this with invitations too, but if you do want to send a postal invitation, then ensure the materials used are recycled and recyclable and avoid any additional adornments, which won’t be processed in a recycling plant,” advises wedding planner Rebecca Green of Rebel + Anchor (rebelandanchor.co.uk) “There are also some awesome plantable, seeded invites, which guests can then plant in soil to grow into wildflowers or herbs.”

Location, location, location If possible, keep travel down to a minimum by having the ceremony and reception in the same location. “If they’re not in the same place but are walking distance apart, don’t rely on coaches or minibuses,” says Rebecca. “This will also add a really fun element to the day, especially if you have the ushers and bridesmaids lead the way holding ‘This way to the party’ signs, or musicians playing along the route.”

Confetti time We all want that confetti moment, and there’s no reason not to, as long as you think ahead. “Biodegradable confetti is generally all that most venues will now accept and there are some lovely ones. You could create your own, of course, if you have the time and the patience,” suggests Rebecca. Grab a hole punch and make your own confetti using dried flowers and old book pages, suggest Surfers Against Sewage (sas.org.uk) or choose an alternative idea that will create just as much buzz. “People are often surprised to know that lots of confetti has plastic components. Go traditional with rice or get a bubble machine in (not single-use plastic bottles of bubbles!)” suggests Rachel Yates, chair of Plastic Free Penzance (plasticfreepz.co.uk).

Flower power “Always work with a florist who doesn’t use floral foam and ideally only uses locally grown organic flowers, where possible,” says Rebecca. We’re lucky down here in the south-west that so many florists have access to locally grown flowers. “Also, ask that flowers are not wrapped in plastic – preferably hessian or delivered to you in glass.” You can find an array of beautiful different ribbons in charity shops or, if you want to buy new, use naturally dyed ribbons. After the wedding, consider rehoming your floral bouquets or centrepieces to local nursing homes or cafés, so they are not left to waste and can be appreciated by others.

To-die-for décor “If you’re creating your own tablescapes, ask friends and family if they have any foliage that can be used as central runners, or use plants and ceramic pots to create that al fresco style dining effect,” suggests Rebecca. “I also love used candles as an alternative to artificial lights. As a stylist and planner, I always have lots of leftover candles and they always look amazing. Ask around; it’s such a waste when candles are just thrown away, and used candles can create that beautiful rustic feel,” she says, an idea that Rachel agrees with. “Light up your tables with handmade candles in old glass jars from home or charity shops, cutting back on plastic table decorations. In fact, when it comes to table decorations such as glitter, table confetti, place markers and ribbons think about ways you can use natural materials,” says Rachel.

Do us a favour The options are endless when it comes to favours for your guests, and we love locally made gifts that put a personal stamp on your proceedings. “Some simple but lovely eco-friendly favours include either packets of seeds or, better yet, pre-planted seedlings or plants in beautiful ceramic pots,” suggests Rebecca. And don’t be tempted to package your favours in plastic or cellophane gift bags. “Make your gift bags more personal and sustainable by handmaking them. Give them a vintage style, by swapping the plastic bags for paper and include thrift shops treats,” recommends Surfers Against Sewage.

89

feature | 10 TIPS FOR A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING

Presents of mind And talking of gifts, if people are travelling a long way to your wedding, offset your carbon footprint by requesting guests, as a wedding gift, go onto https://co2.myclimate.org and calculate the carbon cost of their flight and compensate with funding climate projects. Alternatively, you can ask for donations to an eco charity of your choice.

Food glorious food Always source local, seasonal, organic produce or work with caterers that have that ethos. You could even keep your menu meat-free or plantbased. “There are some incredible vegan caterers out there, and the food is so delicious even your meat-eating guests won’t complain, promise!” says Rebecca. Of course, as well as sourcing locally, it’s important to make sure all the food and drink at your wedding

Lucy Wallace Photography

is as free of plastic packaging as possible, too, and avoid single-use plates and cutlery especially for evening food. “Use wooden cutlery instead of plastic cutlery. Arrange for them to be collected up and put on someone’s compost heap afterwards!” says Rachel. “Takeaway boxes can be replaced with bagasse or cardboard boxes, depending on what food is going in them – your caterer should be able to advise on the best choice.” You could always hire crockery or buy some mismatched plates from a

“OUR ECO WEDDING” Want to hear how it all works on the big day? Dot and Maarten, who recently married in Devon, reveal all… “We are blessed to be surrounded by a wealth of inspiring local businesses who champion environmentally conscious values, so it was an

The same ethos applies to your drinks, whether it’s wine, beer, bubbly or soft drinks – source local, organic and vegan; it can be done, and you’ll have fun experimenting. “Another fun idea is to ask guests to bring a bottle from their drinks cabinet. Hire an experienced mixologist who can work their magic with a hotchpotch of different spirits and liqueurs that have been gathering dust in the backs of cupboards,” says Rebecca. It goes without saying, plastic straws are no longer welcome and if you do have a DIY bar, try using glass. “Hire glasses or trawl the charity shops and have a wonderful array of different glasses or even teacups, which you can donate back afterwards or sell on,” says Rachel. We’ve been to weddings where the favours were enamel mugs (filled with mulled wine) for the guests to use on the day and keep afterwards. If you have to use disposable cups, then opt for recyclable paper ones and make sure they are disposed of in

opportunity to support those small businesses, and also conscious we wanted our children to feel very much a part of the day and by keeping it simple they would feel more held throughout the day. The defining factors were definitely keeping it local and intimate. Everything happened within walking distance of our home, so there was no need for cars and convoys between venues. Our ceremony was held at the beautiful Totnes Guildhall – a hidden gem – and we have the most incredible organic pub, The Bull Inn, on our doorstep. The Bull was the obvious choice for our wedding breakfast and because the guest list was 24, it meant that we could lay on an exquisite meal of ethical dining with a choice of vegan, meat and fish without compromising our values around food – the tempura broccoli with miso mayo was a big hit! Maarten had my engagement ring made by Yumé

When the big day is over and the clean-up begins, it’s not time to forget your eco-conscious credentials. “Try to keep waste to a minimum, so use limited packaging, if any,” says Rebecca. “Always ensure your venue has a good recycling policy. If you’re having a DIY wedding, ensure your caterers have recycling and compost bins and your bar has recycling bottle bins.” Using compostable plastics is great but make sure they’re collected up and taken to the right composting facilities (this sounds like a

recycled and single origin metals as well as ethically a wedding ring workshop, and took in some old family jewellery that our parents donated to us. Yumé had it melted down and refined, so when we arrived on the day, we had gold to work with which had personal meaning to us – neither my dad nor Maarten’s dad are still with us, so it felt special to make our rings out of gold that they had once touched. Maarten wore a suit he’s had for seven years, and

my skirt and jacket I had put away for our wedding for a few years too. When I worked in fashion I was often paid in clothes, and as soon as I saw it I knew it would be my wedding outfit, so I took it as payment and it’s been in a box under our bed waiting for its big moment ever since! I needed to finish my outfit off with a few accessories, so I contacted local maker Lucie Cast for my bag and purchased my sandals from Small-Folk, a children’s and lifestyle store on Totnes High Street. Our wedding flowers were grown by some of our neighbours on their allotment at Bowden Springs Farm, and our vegan cake was made by local baker Lisa of Boho Cakes. Finally, the real stroke of genius was our wedding registry. We approached Me and East – a store selling a beautifully curated selection of locally made crafts – and Chloe very kindly helped us to put together a wish list. This was such a wonderful thing as not only did it mean that our wedding gifts were all unique and beautiful, but the very act of people buying them supported the makers as well as Chloe and her growing family. By the time I looked at our wedding as a whole, I realised that the entire act of our getting married became a process in investing in the community where we live. Think about the people who you want to witness your commitment – don’t feel that you are obliged to invite people to boost the numbers or pacify relatives. Your wedding is a pivotal moment in your life and the people who share it with you should be the people you will turn to in times of joy and sorrow. If you keep things local, you will be reducing the impact of your wedding in many ways, and by being clear about what matters to you environmentally, you’ll find a way to weave that in to your day. Maybe it’s paperless invitations, maybe it’s local seasonal food, maybe you encourage your guests to re-wear something rather than shop for a new outfit. Most of all – have fun with it! It’s supposed to be the happiest day of your life after all. For us, it was pure magic!”

Fabric Installations “Fabric installations are becoming increasingly popular and a great way to add height, depth and, most importantly, texture to your wedding design,” says Rebecca. “Perhaps your venue has a high ceiling and you want to create a more intimate and romantic setting? Or maybe you want to add a bit of drama? If so, a fabric installation could be for you. There is so much versatility depending on your design and you can choose from a variety of fabrics and textures. I would always recommend hiring a stylist or fabric designer to achieve this look; have a look at Mia Sylvia (miasylvia.co.uk). A bonus of taking this approach is that they can also take care of table linen and napkins to avoid stock standard white linen as well as added touches such as silk bows or ribbons for your bouquets.” Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Ohh So Wild

Unusual Reception Table Layouts “Wedding traditions are fast becoming a thing of the past; couples are now choosing which parts of the day are most important to them rather than what they think they should be doing on their special day. Over the past year we’ve seen alternative table plans and long tables having their moment – 2022 weddings will push this further and see couples experimenting with unusual reception table layouts, whether it’s sitting amongst your guests and enjoying every moment or experimenting with different shapes of tables. Squares and curves are interesting shapes to incorporate into your design; I love the thought of a curved table winding through an orchard or wooded Rebecca Marie Weddings & Events Courtney Marie Photography

New Pastels “Pastels have had a reinvention over the last couple of years – and thank goodness!” says Nikki. “No longer a mundane classic wedding look mixing shades of blush with neutral tones and gold – pastels are now much more high-octane! Embrace sugary saccharine pastel shades again. I’m just loving properly popping pinks, lilacs and blues! What’s more, they look great combined with other wedding looks: go boho by mixing in lots of dried flowers and pampas grass – extra points if you dye your dried flowers pastel colours! Plus, they are easily mixed with your preference of metallics – new pastels look just as good with either gold or silver cutlery and frames.”

Knots & Kisses Katy Jones Photography Flowers Brompton Buds

Lush Tropics “I love taking advantage of glorious outdoor spaces and ceremony opportunities, especially at some of the gorgeous venues we have here in the south-west,” says Nikki. “Living in Torquay, there are palm trees everywhere so why not go for a lush tropical theme and take inspiration from boho Hawaiian weddings? This is a great look if you’re having a marquee or tipi wedding as you can create big impact with the larger floral leaves of tropical foliage to dress a blank canvas space or bring in trees and plants to create a really lush feel. The tropical look is also a great opportunity to add in strong pops of colour such as orange or yellow which look beautiful against all the dark greens.”

Country Chic “This is one of my favourite ways to style a wedding and you can’t go wrong whatever time of year you’re getting hitched,” says Phoebe. “From springtime blooms bursting from the hedgerows and untamed long grasses and wildflowers in hazy summer to apple tree boughs in autumn – I draw a lot of inspiration from nature. I have designed a meadow tablescape installation with wildflowers and pops of joyful colour throughout to showcase my couple’s love for summer and picnics through to a cosy harvest feast featuring clashing colours fighting for space amongst hand-picked fruits and vegetables. Get your florist to go wild with seasonal flowers and foliage, and utilise any foraged, found or seasonal gifts that nature brings you during the season you’re getting married. I love a more muted pastel palette for winter and spring, and wildly bright and clashing in summer and autumn!”

“I like things a little ‘undone’ and full of personality,” says Phoebe. “I love creating an abundance of quirky accents, whether it’s potted plants and succulents layered down a table set off by sparkling crystal, a ‘sign our vinyl’ guest book table complete with a gramophone, a vintage typewriter for guests to leave messages or a beer pong table for some afternoon fun. My favourite weddings are always woven with details reflecting the personalities of the couple: for example, book lovers could gift their favourite books as favours or stack them high as table centrepieces, while sports lovers could have a table plan created from cricket bats. My own wedding was filled with all the things my husband and I love, from guitars and surfboard signs to pineapples with flamingos poking out for centrepieces. Surround yourselves with the things that bring you happiness and your wedding will look and feel just like you!”

So-Now Styling Hazel Parsons of wedding styling and event hire specialists Keeping It Vintage shares her top tips for styling a modern wedding Go sustainable. Focus on sustainability, highlighting locally sourced products that emphasise your surroundings, drawing in light, natural colours, elements and shapes. And remember to hire vintage furniture and table décor rather than buying new. Consider the height. Elevate your ceremony using raised observation decks for guests and eye-catching, free-standing ceremony backdrops with floral designs to frame your location and you. Keep it simple. Use a focal point at your venue, such as a dramatic view, beautiful architecture or an eclectic piece of art sitting over a fireplace. Focus on statement furniture such as geometric ceremony arches, smooth round-edged ceremony backdrops, asymmetric flower displays and greenery. Keep it simple with clean, clear lines for table décor. Think about texture. Create bespoke tablescapes layering colour with soft, breezy fabrics. Light, romantic colours make for an airy and heavenly backdrop. Finish with big blousy flowers. Add light. Never underestimate the impact of lighting. Lanterns or glass pillar vases create a low-lit, intimate feel for ceremonies. Enhance your tablescapes with minimalist tea lights in decorative votives and cut glass or add some colour with tall, tapered and naturally dyed dinner candles. Emma Hewlett Louise May Photography

Seasonal and local flowers are the most eco-friendly (and often, purse-friendly) option, so if you’d like a greener wedding in every way, today’s penchant for sustainably sourced blooms is the perfect solution. “I’ve seen a big increase in the requests for seasonal, local flowers,” observes Emma Hewlett (emmahewlett.co.uk). “It’s great to be able to support local growers but, with growing season not being in full swing until April/May, I would always suggest that couples aren’t too picky on flower variety and instead work with colour and let your florist choose the best blooms in that colour palette,” she advises. “I’m in the process of designing a ‘British’ wedding package which will allow more eco-conscious brides to have beautiful, seasonal flowers for their day.” Fuss Pots Amy Chapple Photography

Charlotte Isles at Floren Studio (florenstudio.co.uk) has also noticed this burgeoning trend toward eco florals. “Demand for British blooms is still rising with more

Tide Flowers Verity Westcott Photography

awareness over eco-friendly practices used by florists. We use as many British grown flowers as possible as well as having a ‘no foam’ policy (the green floral foam which is a single-use plastic). We have been using eco-friendly alternatives in our designs

for years now but we are hearing more from our couples about this issue so the information is now filtering through.” “We are seeing couples keen to keep their impact on the environment to a minimum, with floral designs often led by being plastic and foam-free,” notes Hannah Burge from Fuss Pots (fusspots.co.uk). “Natural simple designs in vases are more in favour, as are our very own seasonal British flowers.”

Bright and bold The after-effect of Covid continues to impact various elements in wedding world – including the blooms. “Couples are moving towards deliciously bold and bright flowers!” announces Helen Edwards at The Velvet Daisy (thevelvetdaisy.co.uk). “Designs expressing a happy release from a constant flat-level and worries of life over the past few years. I’m finding couples want a blend of bright colours incorporating different flowers such as yellow roses, deep blue delphinium, orange tulips, red anemone and purple clematis with a background of lime foliage,” she says.

Emma Hewlett The Velvet Daisy

Charlotte is another aficionado of bright blooms. “A lot more couples are steering away from the traditional colour palettes such as pinks, creams and lavenders by choosing bright, vibrant colours,” she reports. “It may be that they are wanting even more of a celebration as we move away from Covid, but bright pinks, blues and yellows are all a hit – as well as unusual schemes such as pairing pastel tones with burnt oranges and deep reds.”

In the frame Floristry is being used to decorate all areas and aspects of weddings, extending from tabletops and pew ends into statement crowns, dancefloor arrangements and one of the biggest trends of the moment: backdrops. The Velvet Daisy Verity Westcott Photography

“Large-scale designs, in particular archways such as deconstructed archways and moon gates, are becoming even more popular,” says Charlotte. “Couples want their ceremony to be a centrepiece and these types of designs do just that. As most of them are moveable and can be used throughout the day, the idea of repurposing flowers is becoming more popular.” “This year I’m still seeing a lot of installation floral designs – lots of statement pieces for ceremony backdrops,” says Emma. “People are framing themselves at the end of the aisle, so we’re seeing the continued use of things like the hexagon arch.”

‘Queen Bee’ picks Structured and statement are also popular buzzwords in wedding flowers, and while foliage continues to dominate mood boards, there is an emerging movement toward “less foliage, more flower,” reveals Ellie May from Darling Buds (darlingbudsofel. com). “My clients’ inspirational imagery is focusing on the structure of the flowers and generally a heavier flower content, including tons of texture (which I love!) with accents of foliage.” Part of this trend is a penchant for more elaborate petals, as Ellie explains. “Specific flowers such as orchids are up there on the top luxury ‘Queen Bee’ flower list. Other structured blooms we have seen a lot of are varieties of blousy roses with the ‘peelback’ petal effect, as well as large daisy style flowers.” Charlotte is another fan of this particular trend. “We love blousy, scented, romantic blooms such as stocks (they smell divine!), delphiniums, double tulips – and dahlias are always a firm favourite. We are also introducing more unusual blooms such as cymbidium orchids into some weddings as they have a real feel of luxury. Heavy use of The Velvet Daisy Verity Westcott Photography

foliage and different textures is also becoming more popular for their look and smell.”

Dried flowers Having claimed the spotlight over previous seasons, dried flowers look set to maintain their multidimensional and budget-friendly appeal. “I strongly feel that the dried flower range will sneak into designs throughout 2022 that create that multitextured, whimsical vibe. Pampas and palm spears are here to stay!” asserts Ellie. One of the many benefits of dried flowers is that they can also be combined with fresh to elevate the textural quality, palette and interest of your arrangements, as Emma remarks: “There’s been a big increase in the use of dried florals – often combining fresh and dried together, while pampas grass is still proving popular for boho looks”.

Tropical touch From bright and colourful schemes to the type of flower itself, a more exotic aesthetic is trickling into this and next year’s wedding flowers, aimed at increasing the wow factor and sensorial escape. “Flowers such as butterfly ranunculi, anemones, David Austin roses and spray roses are the standout flower,” notes Hannah. “And brides are still drawn to large loose bouquets but are migrating slightly towards trailing designs, perhaps incorporating modern tropical twists such as orchids and anthuriums – both of which you can get in stunning warm and muted tones.”

Hanging out Dramatic arrangements aren’t going anywhere either, with hanging installations, giant flower walls, chandeliers, oversized wreaths and floral tunnels all forming part of the bold floral design movement. “Statement pieces are popular with couples being more daring with their ideas, which I love,” says Emma. “Incorporating lighting is also a big trend – everyone loves

an Edison lamp.” Sculptural designs can be used to achieve any kind of look, moving from a few minimal yet eye-catching mono floral arrangements (created with a single type of flower) to maximalist, attention-grabbing florals.

Potted & earthy Vertical arrangements are proving particularly en vogue at the moment, and everything from giant potted palms to miniature trees dotted throughout the venue create striking centrepieces. “These are chosen as an eco-friendly option and are a big win-win for stylish impact!” says Hannah, who has seen a recent surge in demand for her tree and plant hire services. Potted plants also work well for more foliage-heavy or neutral coloured schemes, as Ellie further elaborates. “My colour style as a wedding florist tends to gravitate towards the neutral colour palette and so, naturally, clients are drawn in to match up

to that style, but I am excited to be introducing some more earthy tones this year with a colour palette of sunsets, rust and amber accents making an appearance, as well as the classic muted, ivory, white and soft cream too.” “We are seeing couples inspired by the warmth of earthy tones coupled with romantic dusky blues and pinks, whilst continuing to choose a mix of delicate fresh flowers with natural dried grasses and materials,” says Hannah of how an eclectic

for grand centrepieces and wow floral finishes if you’ve booked, for example, the ballroom of a grand hotel.

Think about food How to cater for large numbers? Buffets may mean long queues while sit-down meals will need a lot of waiting staff to ensure one guest isn’t beginning their prawn and caperberry skewer starter while another is taking their last mouthful of Eton mess. A perfect fit for a festival wedding, food vans are brilliant for large groups as you can offer a range of catering options so there isn’t one queue forming at one van. And talking of subsistence, maybe that lovely idea of a DIY bar isn’t going to work with large crowds, so bartenders may be a wise investment.

To favour or not to favour Painting hundreds of pebbles with the date of your big day is certainly thoughtful and will no doubt be well received by your guests, but do you have the time for personalised touches on this scale? Even the cheapest of ideas can be pricey once you start multiplying in the hundreds, so favours might be something you choose to forgo. Or perhaps make charitable donations on behalf of each guest and print the details for each table to let everyone know of your gesture.

On-the-day responsibilities If you have a large wedding, you’ll have no shortage of people to call on for roles such as bridesmaid, groomsman, ring bearer and the like. You’ll also have your pick of guests for cute roles such a confetti thrower and superhero procession leader. However, just because you’re having a large do doesn’t mean you have to find a role for absolutely everyone. Big dos can still be minimal on fuss, so if you simply want you and your other half taking centre stage and everyone else as guests, there are no rules to say you can’t.

The gift list Your guests will probably want to treat you to a gift of some sort on your special day. However, a large guest list could mean a lengthy gift list. Consider giving your guests options to choose from such as a gift list, charity donation, a contribution towards your honeymoon or even simply letting people know their presence is your present. Gifts from various avenues will ensure you don’t end up with more kitchen equipment than you can shake a whisk at!

Accommodation & travel Think about where your guests will be able to stay and how they will travel to your ceremony and venue. If you book that remote barn with the local three-bed B&B a mile away and nothing else as far as the eye can

see, you might find people struggle to make it. Large weddings need a range of accommodation options nearby so your guests can choose depending on budget, distance and transport links.

Meet & greet You don’t want to spend your wedding day working the room making sure you say hi to everyone while surreptitiously updating the clipboard that’s tucked underneath your gossamer skirt. Neither do you want to wake up the next day thinking: “Was Auntie Elmer or any of my uni friends there?” So how best to approach this? You may find separating the crowd could help: older guests, for example, may enjoy a traditional receiving line or you could schedule time to greet them all in a quiet zone at a certain point in the day. Guests of your age range could be invited to an after-party and under 10s could be welcomed by an entertainer so you can gather them in one place to say hello and release a confetti canon! A welcome dinner the night before for guests who have travelled a long way or you haven’t seen in ages might help them feel welcome. Or how about scheduling in times to visit each table before, during and after the wedding breakfast for a cheers and a selfie? And finally, talking of selfies, try to schedule in some time for a group shot. If that’s from way up high on a balcony to capture the scale of your do or even an ariel photograph, one thing’s for sure – it’s probably going to take more than a selfie stick to record this one!

SPEECH THERAPY

After the happy couple has uttered their vows, there will be other words everyone will be waiting to hear: the speeches. They may fill you with dread – if you have a fear of public speaking, for one, and then there’s the potential for cringeworthy stories being shared with everyone from your granny to your workmates. However, when done right, the speeches can really kick off the party like nothing else. So take a deep breath, heed these top tips and look forward to wedding speeches everyone will remember for the right reasons.

Select your orators carefully. Though your best man might be the perfect stag planner, he might fare more unfavourably when it comes to speaking aloud. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain and if your best man or father of the bride aren’t the best men for the job then assign the role elsewhere. Ask an entrusted uncle/brother/cousin/friend to step in and say the right things in the right way instead. Everyone will

thank you.

Don’t Stand on ceremony if it doesn’t suit. If you want to skip the speeches entirely or just have one person say a few words, it’s your wedding and your choice.

Do Feel free to mix things up. Bridal speeches are gaining a huge following, while your granny, bridesmaid or flower girl might also want to say a few doting words. There really isn’t a rulebook – so write (and speak) and remember the speeches as one of the fondest parts of your day as opposed to the moment you’d rather forget.

Be fooled into thinking it has to be hilarious. Yes, really. Your best mate might be an absolute hoot down the pub, but will his brand of humour translate in a wedding setting? You have to consider the audience, which could contain anyone from newborns to nonagenarians – a fact that could easily be forgotten after a smidge too much Dutch courage by said friend intent on sharing that stripper story...

Don’t Drink too much before the speeches (which should be painfully selfexplanatory).

Do as a group to find out the gist of the content (after first checking they’re completely happy with accepting the task). Not only can they sound out their ideas and find out if they’ve duplicated material, but you can veto anything too below the belt/divisive/tumbleweed and so on. You won’t

Meet with everyone who will be making a speech both individually and

‘ruin’ the surprise of the day’s delivery and, if that’s something you’re worried about, ask them to keep the specifics out before requesting they sit down again separately to go over them together.

Don’t Find your inspiration on the internet. Half of your audience will have heard it already, so it will sound false and impersonal. As teachers past no doubt warned you, plagiarism never works.

Do you speak from the heart (and occasional funny bone – though try your gags on a test audience first) and relay personal anecdote and history, you really can’t go too far wrong.

Planning a wedding can seem overwhelming if you suffer from anxiety. Thanks to the insights of a bride-to-be and an expert from Anxiety UK, we look at how to deal with the triggers and pressures of the planning period words Hannah May

wedmagazine.co.uk

THE LOWDOWN ON PRE-WEDDING ANXIETY

anxiety (noun) WORRY ‘an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen in the future’ If the dictionary definition of anxiety strikes a chord, then you’re not alone. Whether you already had an anxiety disorder before you became engaged, or developed one through the pressure imposed during the planning period, then you are amongst an increasing number of people experiencing a bout of pre- (and even post) wedding anxiety. We talk to one bride about her personal journey and glean some expert advice on how to help ease your anxiety as you approach the aisle...

Too many questions

“Anxiety, on the other hand, is more persistent and can disrupt day-to-day life. With anxiety there may not be one specific cause of worry, you can find yourself worrying about little things all of the time. If the anxiety you experience starts to get out of proportion and you end up feeling more anxious than you would expect someone else to be in your circumstances – this may be a sign of an anxiety condition.” Dave’s distinction between stress and anxiety is an important one. While one tends to occur in short bursts on a temporary basis, the other can appear as a constant threat: a looming fretfulness that increases in force until, quite often, it can cause total overwhelm and even an inability to think and function properly. Weddings can heighten anxiety in new and unpredictable ways, as Laura experienced from the outset. “The sheer

media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest can add to this pressure,” he adds of the multiple stressors involved.

Planning pressures “It’s likely you will have experienced stress at some point in life already, whether it be from your job, education or other responsibilities,” says Dave Smithson from Anxiety UK (anxietyuk.org.uk). “Some people are more prone to stress and may find seemingly simple tasks a challenging experience. The difference between stress and anxiety is that stress can often be linked to a specific cause and is usually temporary or can be relieved by action. For example, if you are stressed about a deadline, once you

An inability to switch off can rapidly ensue, leaving you struck with a negativity that not only affects your ability to act, but can also impair your relationships as a result. One solution is that rather than persistently second-guessing your decisions, ask yourself some pertinent questions that relate to your values and goals as individuals and a couple. The trick is to avoid becoming swept up by the stress and outward appearances of things by keeping sight of reality, of who you are and what you want.

“Not everything you see online is real,” reminds Dave. “Social media is deceiving. What you don’t see behind the

how much that set-up costs to put together.” “It’s not just about the look, it is such a special day so how it looks on Instagram is just a very small part of it. It’s about the atmosphere on the day, making that commitment to each other, getting together with family and friends, and most of all – having fun!” Prioritisation and perspective are key. He raises another vital consideration. “Is it worth getting into debt for?” he asks. “A lot of these ‘extras’ cost extra. Check in with your budget. You don’t want to cause stress further down the line with financial problems.”

Self-care is another seminal and often overlooked part of the planning process, but can pay dividends on the day and beyond. “Eat well, drink well: caffeine and alcohol can both exacerbate feelings of stress and worry. reveals Laura. “Not only Tristan but my sister and parents too. With their help I was able to stop, take a breath, and breakdown the issues that were bothering me,” explains Laura. “Talk about it,” urges Dave. “If you feel like you’re being buried under the weight of extra tasks or emotions, reach out to those around you. Talk to a friend about it, no matter how small or silly it may seem. They might be able to help you, or at least reassure you.” Vocalising your feelings is one of the most vital steps, and should be followed by taking action to abate your anxiety. For example, Laura discovered that a pragmatic approach to the planning helped her to exercise a degree of focus and control that she was comfortable with, allowing her to tease out any issues and problems in a more bite-sized way. “I do love a list!” she announces. “Getting

by getting some early nights and making sure seems such obvious advice, yet many brides and grooms fail to meet their basic needs while in the throes of wedding planning, hampering their wellness – and happiness – as a result. Also try to bolster a sense of synergy and work together as a team with your fiancé, family and friends, which will help you to stay connected with all of the people in your life – including your self, and to harness a state of harmony and reduce anxiety. “Breathe,” says Dave of one of the most effective

Share the load. Not just with your partner, but also with family and friends. You’ll be surprised at how excited people are to be involved in your day. It’s ok to let go of the reigns a little and allow others to take some of the workload. Set boundaries. Remember this day is about you and your partner. Other people will likely want to have a say in what’s going on. Most often this can come from parents, especially if they have contributed financially you may feel like you ‘owe’ them. It’s ok to say no. Be clear and honest about your feelings. Take breaks. Not every waking minute should be filled with wedding planning. Make sure you have some time to relax. Book in a date night with your partner, get out for some exercise, practise some self-care. up so far in advance and I just couldn’t cope with doing everything at once.” Her next tip is one that many brides fail to see the value of often until it’s too late: delegation. “I asked Tristan to be in charge of the honeymoon. We discussed possible locations but I left it up to him. My sister is maid of honour so I have left hen do decisions in her capable hands, my mum is on the case with flowers and decorations, and my dad is a great help sorting out the marquee

ALI AND CHRIS by WILD TIDE WEDDINGS wildtideweddings.com

Love and Magic Ali and Chris created an enchanting day full of personal touches at Trevenna After meeting via a dating app, Ali and Chris met for their first date at an outdoor Christmas bar. “Neither of us are big drinkers so we ended up in an ice cream parlour at midnight!” recalls Ali. Chris chose Bow Bridge in New York’s Central Park to ask that all-important question. “It’s our absolute favourite place in the world,” she reveals. “There was even a busker playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow as it happened! We then spent the day exploring the city and, of course, taking photos of the ring next to every big building!” Trevenna provided the perfect setting for their weekend-long wedding. “We wanted a whimsical feel, something that felt truly magic,” explains Ali. “We decided to keep the colours classic with whites, pinks and greens, and used accents of gold in our other décor.” Having relished the wedding design process, Ali has since set up her own wedding styling business, The Loom Styling Co. The two-day event saw guests enjoying dinner and playing lawn games the evening before the wedding. “The next day we all gathered in the farmhouse for breakfast before the ceremony,” says Ali. “Chris and I aren’t traditional, so we stayed together until it was time to get ready!” Hosting an outdoor ceremony overlooking the rolling landscape, a pianist played Ludovico Einaudi’s I Giorni for Ali’s entrance, but it was the ceremony’s close that really lingers in her mind. “The confetti after we said I do!” she cites as one of her fondest memories. “I have never felt joy like it!” After the vows, guests mingled on the lawn over Pimm’s and gin cocktails, while Lewis Belcher wowed with his magic tricks. Settling at the gorgeously styled tables, a family-style sharing feast saw guests tucking into the likes of chicken breast with Cornish pancetta dauphinoise potatoes, ovenroasted salmon with crushed herb potatoes and lemon posset with raspberry compote. “After dinner we had the speeches - I also spoke, which was very nerve-wracking!” says Ali, who continued the celebrations by partying the night away. Looking back, she shares another lingering thought from their day. “Unfortunately, we had to postpone our wedding due to Covid,” she says of the ill-fated timing of their wedding. “This meant that my dad – who has a terminal illness – was too unwell to attend, so my brother walked me down the aisle and read a speech he had written. We also honoured him by leaving a chair out for him at the ceremony.” From poignant touches such as this to a banner featuring a poem by her mum and the New York skyline embroidery on her veil, Ali and Chris’s wedding was packed with personal details. “Sometimes the smallest details have the biggest impact,” she says by word of advice to couples hoping to plan a similarly individual celebration. “Everyone loved our personalised M&Ms with our faces on!”

HANNAH AND WILL by KIRSTIN PRISK kirstinprisk.co.uk

Colour of Love Hannah and Will’s seaside celebrations at Hotel Tresanton were brimming with colour, flavour and personality Hannah and Will first laid eyes on each other at a mutual friend’s 30th birthday party. “I was still living in London and Will had made the trip down from the Cotswolds,” she recalls. “The beard caught my attention…” The couple were holidaying in the Isle of Skye when, after many hours of driving and a walk to the Fairy Glen, Will decided they should take another walk together. “He insisted we stop to walk up to a viewpoint for sunset,” says Hannah. “By this point I was less than impressed with all the activity so, when I finally stopped complaining, Will called me and I turned to find him on one knee.” Hotel Tresanton was the venue for their colourful by-the-sea celebrations. “My mum is from India and Will and I had taken a long holiday there not long before we got engaged, so there were elements that were certainly India-inspired, from the marigolds, orange and pink pom-pom garlands to the mixture of fruit and brassware on the table,” says Hannah. For their afternoon ceremony, Hannah slipped into a gorgeously pared-back gown while Will’s navy blue suit was punctuated with orange socks and an orange silk tie that complemented the bridal party’s vibrant bouquets. The newly-weds headed off for photos during the waterside drinks reception, returning to tuck into a wedding breakfast of Fal scallops and lobster croquettes, beef fillet and apple tarte tatin. “We enjoyed a very decadent, frilly cake decorated with seashells, very kindly gifted by Will’s sister and brother-in-law,” says Hannah of the evening’s spoils, which took place to the soundtrack of a special Spotify playlist. “The readings and the speeches were particularly poignant as we were such a small party and the emotion of the day was very palpable,” says Hannah of a standout memory. “It also meant a lot to us that we were able to spend quality time throughout the day with our closest family. I think had we gone for a big wedding then perhaps our families wouldn’t have felt as integral and as included, so that time together was really very special.” While she’s on the subject of planning, Hannah encourages other couples to embrace any potential changes. “Don’t be afraid to downsize your wedding – I would never have considered it but for the pandemic but, given the choice now, I would do it all over again,” she says. “And don’t let the stress of planning the day detract from your excitement or enjoyment – everything works out in the end and details that you thought were important pale into insignificance on the day.”

ABBIE AND SAM by THOMAS FROST PHOTOGRAPHY thomasfrostphotography.com

Into the Wild Abbie and Sam arranged a weekend of camping, feasting and merriment at Cornish Tipi Weddings “We met in our 20s and travelled together on Sam’s motorbike to Italy, seeing each other for a couple of years before we parted ways,” says Abbie of her and Sam’s initial romance. Five years later the pair began dating again, embarking upon a trip to New Zealand together a year later. “Sam and I had gone bouldering near Christchurch at a spot called Cave Stream. I was having a bad climb so he told me to come sit with him on the bouldering mat and gave me some coffee, then pulled out a small vintage ring box and handed it to me. It was such a lovely moment, full of chalk and tearful words and complete and utter contentedness,” reveals Abbie. Cornish Tipi Weddings provided the beautiful backdrop for their wild weekend wedding that embraced the outdoors in all its natural glory. “A camping wedding and a big party was our dream!” says Abbie, whose vision featured wildflowers, moss, origami hearts, “flowing booze and a summer barbecue spread!” Much of the décor was handmade, with friends and family pitching in for further personalisation. Abbie painted the welcome sign and created the invitations and banner, while her parents made a postbox for the wedding gifts. “My friend Rich made an amazing old school vintage phone to leave messages on and one of my best and oldest friends made my wedding dress from scratch,” adds Abbie. One of her favourite aspects of the day was the entertainment provided by jazz swing band, The Chaser Quartet. “They played some amazing tunes and Sam and I had our first dance to Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. We completely lost ourselves and I ended up jumping into Sam’s arms!” she recalls. “The mistakes were well hidden by some confetti cannons and everyone joined us on the dancefloor.” Another impromptu performance captured the newly-weds’ hearts when Sam’s gran, Jo, sang Can’t Help Falling in Love in the marquee. “It had everyone in tears and the staff held down their transmitter button on their radios so that everyone could hear it over the campsite’s intercom,” recalls Abbie. “It was the hottest weekend that summer and we were so lucky to have all our guests!” she gratefully acknowledges. “Restrictions were lifting and all our family and friends came. It was heaven. People were swimming in the beautiful lake, playing lawn games and making the most of the friendly atmosphere at Cornish Tipis.” “My top tip is work as a team!” she shares as indispensable planning (and marital) advice. “Sam and I would share tasks and support each other. Also, use your skills and get crafty!”

ELEANOR AND JOE by EMMA STONER PHOTOGRAPHY emmastonerweddings.com

Festival Fever Eleanor and Joe’s festival wedding treated guests to a feast of street food, live music and views across the Camel Estuary Eleanor and Joe first met while playing for the same softball team in Portsmouth. They became engaged while at the Little Orchard Cider Festival, “to a backdrop of the Cornish hills followed by a Friday night performance by The Wurzels!” exclaims Eleanor. Overlooking the ocean in Rock, John Bray’s Field was the venue for their festival-themed Cornish wedding where a tipi decorated with a beautiful palette of blue and orange, together with street food and live music, delighted their guests. A plethora of personalised and handmade touches added to the character of the day, with Eleanor making the stationery and Joe creating the signposts, sandwich boards and wedding arch. As a fun nod to their engagement, Eleanor walked down the aisle to The Wurzels’ Combine Harvester; their celebrant-led ceremony took place beneath a stretched canvas with the Camel Estuary providing the picturesque backdrop. The newly-weds then headed to the similarly scenic setting of Daymer Bay for photos while their guests tucked into cream teas and various tipples from the horsebox bar to an acoustic soundtrack. The flavoursome delights continued with a self-serve street food wedding breakfast, presenting guests to the likes of beef goulash, paella and vegetable tagine. Ice cream and a Cornish cheese table completed the feast in lieu of a cake, while later in the evening freshly cooked pizzas kept appetites deliciously at bay as a seven-piece funk band played. “Funk City Band’s evening entertainment included a brass section playing a semi-personalised playlist of hits from the ‘50s to now, and drew everyone to the dancefloor,” recalls Eleanor. The preamble to the day provided the couple with some of their most treasured moments. “The week running up to the wedding involved decorating the tipi, field and stretched canvas ceremony area with the help of our friends and family,” she says of the collaborative effort involved in achieving her dream day. Come W-day, it was the chance to catch up with loved ones in person post-Covid that leaves her smiling while looking back. “Equally enjoyable was being able to step away from the party with our five-month-old daughter to enjoy the sunset,” she adds. “The sunset broke through the clouds to provide some epic photos.” And when asked about any words of wisdom that she’d pass on to other couples, she recommends starting as early as possible. “Don’t underestimate how much time you have,” she warns. “Book the venue, suppliers and music as early as possible – you’ll be amazed how far in advance some people get booked up!”

ELLEN AND JAMIE by HAZY DAZE STUDIO hazydazestudio.com

Heart and Soul Cornwall’s rugged far west provided the wildly romantic backdrop for Ellen and Jamie’s elopement After meeting online, it was a case of instant attraction when Ellen and Jamie embarked upon their first date together. “We both soon realised that we would be in each other’s lives,” smiles Ellen. While walking the dog in their favourite woods, Jamie led Ellen to the place where they had shared their first kiss to propose. “I had kind of figured what was happening as Jamie came over very sheepish,” she reveals. “I honestly can’t remember what he said as it’s all an emotional blur!” Having originally planned a large country wedding, the couple were forced to postpone due to Covid. “We soon realised that all we really wanted to do was be married, so we decided to elope to the Cornish coast instead,” explains Ellen. “Cornwall has always been special to us: we had our first holiday there and have been every year since.” Booking their wedding date at Boho Cornwall, the couple drew on the rugged coastal surroundings as inspiration for the styling of their day, choosing natural tones, shells and dried flowers to decorate the venue and sea glass place names for their picnic table. Ellen wore a custom-made chiffon gown with bell sleeves and a bespoke embroidered veil featuring moon phases and sentimental words. Accessorising with a dried floral crown on a fedora, a half-up hairstyle with a fishtail braid and natural make-up completed her enchanting look. “I felt the most beautiful I have ever felt,” she says. In keeping with the boho vibe, Jamie donned earthy green slacks and a collarless shirt pinned with a beautiful boutonnière. “Neither of our outfits were very traditional, but they were us!” says Ellen. The couple exchanged personalised vows overlooking the ocean. After photos at the Minack Theatre, they headed to Sennen Cove where a grazing platter picnic was set up on the cliffside. “We had our first dance as the sun was setting and the waves were breaking behind us,” reminisces Ellen. “On our first holiday to Cornwall, we watched the most amazing sunset at Fistral Beach. Jamie said to me ‘I’m going to marry you one day’, and to be having our first dance on a Cornish beach as the sun set felt like we had come full circle.” Dusk provided the perfect backdrop for photos in the water, a time that was made all the more magical with the lighting of sparklers. “Just before we left the beach Jamie and I collected some sand in a glass jar to keep forever,” adds Ellen of the series of touches that stand out in her memory as the most unforgettable. “Do what you want to do,” she urges other couples. “Don’t worry about traditions, pleasing other people or family politics. It’s your day – do it your way; you won’t regret it. We certainly don’t!”

MICHAELA AND DAN by SUMMIT IMAGERY summitimagery.co.uk

In Full Bloom Michaela and Dan beautifully merged the indoors and outdoors with a carnival of vibrant flowers at their country wedding Dan chose a crisp December day in an idyllic Cotswold village to ask Michaela to marry him. “Dan proposed and we then celebrated with a delicious pub lunch afterwards,” she reminisces. Beginning their search for a venue, the couple were instantly drawn to the modern, light-filled setting of Camel Studio. “We didn’t want somewhere traditional and the studio was the perfect mix between elegance, comfort and style,” enthuses Michaela. “Opening the barn doors brought the outside in, which was exactly how we wanted our day to flow.” An abundance of greenery was spliced with bright pops of colour throughout. “We wanted the day to be beautiful but also classic and so kept to black and white, with the flowers creating colour and warmth alongside lots of candles,” she explains. The floristry was one of her favourite aspects of the day. Choosing high impact installations to create a wow-worthy scene, the rainbow of late summer blooms including dahlias, hydrangeas, zinnias and statices contrasted gorgeously with the studio’s sleek white walls. The fog lifted from the surrounding hills in time for the outdoor ceremony. Michaela and Dan exchanged vows before a beautiful arch decorated with foliage and colourful flowers, while her brother took the duty of ring bearer and close friends delivered readings. A drinks reception complete with garden games then allowed guests to relax and mingle ahead of dinner. The feast of tiger prawns, Persian slow-cooked lamb shoulder and “the best crème brûlée we’ve ever eaten!” was punctuated by a particularly memorable moment. “My grandparents were unable to travel to our wedding and so we asked my grandfather to write grace for dinner, which my aunt said on his behalf,” reveals Michaela. Dessert platters and freshly cooked pizzas were served in the evening while the firepit and DJ provided the ambience and entertainment. “It was just before this point that I sneaked away with my friends to change into my second dress (and trainers so we could dance all night) and made an entrance back into the studio dancing to Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” says Michaela. “There are two,” she says on recalling her fondest memories of the day. “One was at the end of the ceremony when we were waiting for our guests to line up to throw confetti and we both looked at each other and were like, ‘oh my goodness, we’re married!’ and the other was sitting on the veranda of the shepherd’s hut, eating pizza and reliving our day.” “Our advice would be: figure out what’s important to you and stick to it,” she comments. “It’s so easy to get lost in what you think others expect from your wedding, but it’s your day!”

LUCIE AND ROSS by NICK WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY nickwphotography.com

House Style Classic styling, fine food and the fairytale setting of Boconnoc made for a dream wedding weekend for Lucie and Ross “I lived with one of Ross’s school friends at university and, for my 19th birthday, we invited our friends from home for a big night out,” says Lucie, reflecting on her fortuitous first meeting with Ross. “While it might be a cliché, it was love at first sight for me. I knew I was going to marry him. We’ve been together ever since that night, over 12 years ago!” After Ross proposed and wedding planning began, the couple discovered their vision for the day was quite traditional. “We wanted to have all of the typical elements included which set the tone for a timeless, classic wedding theme,” says Lucie. Boconnoc proved the perfect backdrop. “Boconnoc was the first venue we viewed online and fell in love with the character and charm of the entire estate,” she says. “It offered the traditional but relaxed vibe we wanted with the use of the house and cottages over a whole weekend.” What’s more, the elegant interiors and picturesque grounds of the venue needed little in the way of styling. “It’s so stunning that it didn’t need masses of dressing, so we opted for a neutral colour scheme,” explains Lucie. “My flowers were all white with sprays of eucalyptus and ferns while the bridesmaids wore dark taupe dresses. All the additional décor was white with soft accents of taupe and silver to tie it all together.” The couple were forced to change their original plans for a large-scale wedding due to Covid, reducing their guest list to 30. “In the end, this was the best scenario because we had the chance to really feel at home at Boconnoc with our friends and family,” concedes Lucie. “It felt as if we had just invited our closest friends to come for a weekend’s stay with a wedding thrown in!” After a relaxed morning of preparations which saw Ross and his groomsmen going for a dip in the lake, the couple took their vows in the church before spilling outside for canapés and champagne in the sunshine to the stirring sounds of acoustic artist Rebecca Puckey. “This was such a wonderful part of the day as it gave us a chance to revel in what we had just done and speak to all of our guests,” says Lucie. With food being a top priority for the couple, the reduced numbers meant they were able to indulge their guests with a menu that is still being raved about today. Starting with a supper on the Friday evening, the weekend served up round after round of culinary delights from dawn to dusk, which Lucie cites as a particular highlight. “I still have people now talk about the deep-fried mac and cheese sticks we had as one of our canapés!” she says. And while their wedding was very different to their original plans, the couple wouldn’t change a thing. “We were able to spend time with all of our guests throughout the weekend without feeling rushed and we could relax into the fact we were about to head into one of the biggest days of our lives.”
