LOVE IS ALL AROUND From the depths of the ocean to the stardust of the heavens, this issue sees us looking to our spellbinding surrounds for a wedding where the wonder of nature meets the wonder of love. ‘Wildly in Love’, a beguiling styled shoot set deep in the Devon

a modern approach to a celestial wedding, scattering a palette of blues with metallic accents, bold shapes and cosy touches, while ‘In Deep’ takes the ocean as muse, weaving marine inspiration with ethereal styling for a sea-loving celebration. The leafy climes of Brickhouse Vineyard make a lush canvas for an elegant wedding with whispers of California in ‘Love in the Vineyard’. And another corner of South Devon – new wedding venue The Grain Store – takes centre stage in ‘Industrial Revolution’, where rustic styling and industrial touches create a modern wedding scene inspired by its characterful location. The dreaminess continues with the bridal wear. From classic elegance to cutting-edge chic, you’ll find the hottest frocks gracing Devon’s bridal boutiques in these pages. We’ve also picked out a swoon-worthy selection of finishing touches – think jaw-dropping shoes, customised veils and fashion-forward headwear – to make your bridal look oh-so you. Plus, there’s a dazzling selection of diamond rings, trending cakes and advice for choosing your wedding photographer. And, while we couldn’t be happier to see big weddings back, it’s good to see small weddings are going nowhere. Four couples share the magic of their scaled-back big days in ‘Small Weddings of Dreams’. More loved-up couples share the stories of their dream Devon weddings in ‘Got Wed’. We love them all, from the sun-drenched ’70s vibes of Cassie and James’ boho celebrations in the countryside to the pastelpretty elegance of Sylvie and Nick’s wedding at Rockbeare Manor. There are al fresco vows, gorgeous florals and nods to ‘Bridgerton’ in Chloe and Adam’s stunning celebration – the very first wedding at Moreton House in North Devon. And Amal and Matt’s wedding was positively bursting with colour, music and joy on Devon’s south coast. Each wedding draws on a sense of place – together with the passions of the happy couple – to create the most beautiful celebrations of love and togetherness – something we all prize more highly than ever. To all those who are newly engaged and looking ahead to a lifetime of togetherness, congratulations! We look forward to being there every step of the way on this incredibly special journey. I hope you enjoy the issue. Rebecca

HOUSE OF LOVE

New wedding venue Moreton House has opened its doors in North Devon – and it offers elegance and romance in abundance. A Georgian stately home on the outskirts of the ancient port town of Bideford, a six-year renovation project has seen the building bloom into a beautiful, light-filled venue. Its range of impressive yet homely spaces and luxurious on-site accommodation makes it a perfect setting for a modern wedding. Rich in the beauty of this corner of Devon, guests can enjoy roaming the five acres of landscaped tree-lined gardens, while the breathtaking vistas of the north coast are less than two miles away. Offering a culinary experience to match the awe-inspiring setting, Moreton House has announced an exciting partnership with award-winning restaurant The Royal George. After successfully joining forces to pull together a wedding with just eight weeks’ notice – see Chloe and Adam’s real wedding feature on p.138 – the two family-run businesses agreed to join forces again to offer a limited number of prime weekend wedding packages for 2022, with the catering

STYLED WITH A KISS Planning a wedding can be exciting and wonderful to time-consuming and stressful – and one of the most discussed areas of planning is the styling. Choosing a wedding stylist means you can work with an expert to help create your dream vision, ensuring it looks every bit as magical as (or even better than) you imagined. Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses knows that fresh eyes and fresh ideas can really help take your wedding to a new level, and that venue styling isn’t simply about making things look beautiful. Every visual element shapes your guests’ experience, so purpose and function are important too, and she’s offering three styling services to help you finesse the look for your wedding.

Verity Westcott Photography

Toby Lowe Photography

‘The Style Experience’ will see Nikki working with you from concept through to completion, offering a comprehensive, bespoke styling experience designed to shape the overall look and feel of your wedding. Nothing is beyond her expertise, from large installations and jaw-dropping focal points to irresistible food stations and creative, comfortable seating areas. Meanwhile, ‘The On-The-Day Edit’ takes the stress out of the big day itself, removing any décor set-up and styling tasks from your to-do list – perfect if you already have a design in mind and most of the styling supplies you need. And as well as styling and design, there’s also ‘The Inspiration Session’, a consultation-only service for couples who need a little guidance or a big dose of inspiration. It’s an ideal option if you want to do everything yourselves but don’t know where to start when it comes to creating a cohesive, trend-led look for your wedding. Plus, if you’re planning the look of your ceremony, Knots & Kisses also offers a range of backdrops and ceremony frames, which can be either included with a styling service, or used on a hire-only basis. As well as the ever-popular hexagon and triangle frames, Nikki has also added this curved slatted wooden backdrop and abstract shapes backdrop to her collection, which is available in a bespoke

colour scheme to set the scene perfectly. knotsandkisses.co.uk

Your wedding flowers don’t just provide the final flourish: they’re central to the overall design of your day. Floristry can work wonders in establishing and elevating your scene, and whether it’s pared-back and natural or strikingly abloom, their key role is not to be underestimated. If you wish to bring the outdoors in, scent your space, create showstopping installations or subtly heighten a sense of ambience, Helen Edwards of The Velvet Daisy will create your vision to enchanting effect. “I attend to every floral detail with inspiration, creativity and attention to detail,” says Helen, who expertly guides couples through the process to bring their ideas to life. “My approach is relaxed, personal and supportive, guiding you from simple loveliness to unimaginable grandeur.” All designs are created to suit each unique client, weaving Helen’s English garden inspiration with years of experience in weddings, events, photo shoots and corporate work to ensure beautifully resplendent results. Helen works in London, Devon and Cornwall, allowing for consultations wherever convenient. She will select flowers to suit your personality and wedding type (as well as budget of course), including the bouquets,

WILDLY IN LOVE

Amidst the unease of modern times, there is a call to rewild and rediscover the joy that a connection with nature brings. It is little wonder, then, that more and more couples are choosing to take their vows in wildly beautiful locations where they can feel at one with the elements. The four natural elements were the starting point for this styled shoot, which captures the beguiling romance of a wedding deep in the wilderness, filled with bohemian accents and earth-friendly details. “Earth, wind, fire and water were the inspiration for the shoot,” explains wedding planner and stylist Charly Doran of Feather & Fawn. Nestled between Dartmoor and Exmoor, Stafford Barton Estate is a wildlife haven where hunting and shooting is prohibited and nature is left to flourish – a remote and romantic location for the bride and groom to immerse themselves in the wild. Earth was also signified by the warm tones of beige, browns and taupe that carry throughout the details, the crystal favours and the use of natural materials such as clay, wood and stone in the tablescape. “Feathers were incorporated in the jewellery and flowers to represent the wind,” says Charly. “For fire, we used fire logs to line the ceremony aisle and cosy firepits for the couple and lounge area, while the lake backdrop for the cake and tablescape represented water.” The effect is mesmerising; shafts of golden light beam on the woodland floor, falling on the roses, textured foliage and pampas grasses adorning the ceremony arch and peacock chairs, while the glow, crackle and smoke of the fire enhance the air of drama and romance. A blend of natural shades and textures, the tablescape slots seamlessly into the canvas of woodland and water beyond, while the gold leaf detailing of the cake reflects the magic of golden hour as it floats on the glassy surface of the lake. The dresses are beautifully bohemian, combining soft skirts, fringing and lace, the bride’s long hair cascading over her shoulders in a tumble of loose waves and plaits, while the groom’s ensemble brings modern edge to a classic country look. A keen focus on ethically sourced details was central to this celebration of natural beauty. “The shoot was completely vegan, using all synthetic materials,” explains Charly. “For example, our Clydesdale horse, Chancellor, wore a nylon halter instead of leather and the groom wore a corduroy jacket instead of wool. All the feathers were ethically sourced and cruelty-free.”

TO THE MOON AND BACK

There’s something incredibly romantic about a starry night sky, so why not weave some of this magic into your wedding scheme? The celestial trend has been shining bright on the wedding scene and, in this styled shoot, stylist Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses sprinkles the heavenly inspiration with modern ideas and abstract shapes to bring a fresh, contemporary dimension to the dazzling look. The ceremony backdrop sets the mystical mood, the strong curves and shades of blue reminiscent of the moon. A striking installation of palms and pampas grass in a medley of blue and neutral shades

echoes the arrangement above the tablescape, bringing a boho-luxe mood to the look. Vivid blues are a recurring theme, from the stationery embellished with constellations and the signs of the zodiac to the floating cake: an ethereal confection of marbled blues and otherworldly detailing. Layered with the metallic accents of the gold cutlery, brass vases and the dusting on the macarons, the scene is reminiscent of stars dotted across the sky at twilight. “The strong palette of blues, mixed metallics and neutrals works brilliantly and stands out really well in the warm light of the tipi canvas,” explains Nikki. The starry detail finds its most stunning expression in a blue bridal gown embellished with sequin stars and accessories adorned with the sparkle of a night sky. Sheepskin rugs, snug sofas arranged around a firepit and a hot chocolate bar stocked with marshmallows, frothy milk and crumbly chocolate enhance the warm, cosy vibe – perfect for a stargazing celebration.

DRESSES OF DREAMS Whether your bridal vibe is vintage, boho or cutting edge-chic, Evolved Bridal has a lust-have new addition to make your heart flutter. First of all, there’s the designer who needs no introduction: Vera Wang. The queen of bridal fashion has unveiled her new collection – and it couldn’t be more beautiful. From the seductive cowl neck slip of Amandine and Chantilly mermaid of Frania to the all-over beading and statement-making flower appliqué of Carole, chic, form-fitting design is a mesmerising feature of the collection. Then there’s the sculptural wonders of Gizelle, a pleated mikado gown with a layered organza skirt, the striking fit and flare silhouette and plunge bodice of Mishell, and the head-turning drama of Margot, with its full skirt, bow shoulder accent and deep square neckline. These jaw-dropping gowns are available exclusively in the south-west at the Barnstaple boutique; don’t miss the upcoming designer events for the opportunity to browse the full collection. The sister brand of Rue De Seine, Lovers Society is also new to the boutique. The label focuses on romantic and bohemian style with a high fashion edge

“for the lovers, the rebels, the romantics, and the kindred souls swept away by the deepest love”. The new collection combines sweeping lines with whimsical florals to dreamy effect. Picture twist lace plunge bodices paired with vine appliqué skirts, and body-hugging crepe gowns with open backs designed to fit, flaunt and flatter in equal measure. The dazzling details comprise textured botanical accents and exclusive lacework to floral embroidery and voluminous trains. And for those seeking a stylish air of nostalgia, there’s Rosa Clara’s new Gatsby collection. Each gown is a vision of elegant drapery, gorgeous lines and dazzling detail – from the beaded bodice and plunging neckline of Olay to the eyecatching mermaid cut of Obac, with ornate all-over beading and an illusion back adorned with exquisite appliqués. With fresh-from-the-runway gowns from Rish Bridal and Zavana Couture also available in the intimate and stylish boutique, Evolved Bridal promises the ultimate in modern – and very en vogue – romance. evolvedbridal.co.uk

A FINE VINTAGE If you’re seeking something that’s one-of-a-kind but also ready-to-wear, then step into the glorious vintage emporium that is Days of Grace. Home to an incredible collection of vintage and antique lace, bridal gowns, occasion wear and accessories, you’ll find a dazzling assortment of designs to pore over. You can build your ensemble from scratch or select a gorgeous reimagined gown from the in-house handcrafted collection that uses original vintage lace in ‘modern sizes’, which can be bought or custom-made to suit. Perhaps you’d rather pick up an authentic piece of vintage fashion, or find a unique finishing touch oozing timeless style; whatever takes your fancy, the Budleigh Salterton boutique is the place to be. Owner, stylist and textiles expert Linda Duriez is passionate about vintage apparel and is replete with knowledge to help you create your look, from recreating era wear to tailoring something from her divine ready-to-wear collection to ensure it fits like a glove and looks like a dream. And with an emphasis on affordability (with many gowns retailing from as little as £300), brides seeking something with an edge of boho, debutante or Hollywood glamour need look no further for a fabulously budget-friendly and bespoke bridal look. Visit the beautiful beachside boutique or browse online to whet your appetite for all things vintage, where you’ll find the likes of original Edwardian lace and cotton gowns alongside vintage 1970s styles, silk corseted Victorian replicas, embroidered 1920s French lace and a host of ontrend 1950s styles including layered ruffles, lace-up backs, oyster satin and ivory-flocked organza. daysofgracevintage.com

THE FINISHING TOUCH A unique and perfectly paired veil can take a bridal look to a whole new dreamy level – so says Rebecca Anne Designs who is aiming to “reclaim the veil” from being considered “outdated, old-fashioned and symbolising a time when etiquette overruled style”. Her newest collection is a contemporary showcase of stunning quality, bringing personality and style to your bridal ensemble. With hand-embroidered detailing including florals, foliage, stars and personalised scripts, you can have your chosen words, lyrics, names or dates delicately woven into your look. “It will be an extension of your personality, your style and your story that elevates and celebrates you and your dress,” explains Rebecca, who recently held a silent auction of her bespoke veils. “I raised more than £2,000 for The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, a fantastic charity based in Exeter who work with couples all over the UK. They help to organise and fund weddings for people living with life limiting conditions or terminal illnesses,” she says. “The charity was overjoyed and it made it even more special that every bride who won was so Kamila Nowak Photography

Bows and ruffles One of the best ways to modernise or personalise an outfit is to add a little extra something, especially a detachable or in-built maxi bow, which gives a palpably regal air while adorning the shoulder, waist or back. Meanwhile, double bows lend a preppy or vintage vibe and ruffles – of any kind and placed anywhere from the straps to the skirt – are an indisputable winner.

Deep V-necks and backs

Suzanne Neville, The Ivory Lounge

Plunging necklines range from navel-deep to over-scooped sweethearts, depending on how low you want to go. Décolleté designs can be made more demure with sheer and illusion panelling, or bolder via cut-outs and corset bodices, while deep plunging and bare backs provide another sensuous and showstopping way to wear the trend.

Cut-outs The cut-out craze is not only centred on small flesh-exposing strips and shapes, but now also includes criss-cross strapping and midriff flossing (thin straps that wrap around your bare midsection), which are perfect for open-waisted dresses or separates such as crop tops. Picture chic portrait backs, romantic sweetheart and keyhole bodices, and sexy side, U, V and triangle cut-outs as part of a very en vogue ensemble.

Texture and dimensions Whether you wish to add a single embellishment to a pared-back gown or create a look layered with interest, textural and dimensional elements are one the easiest and most high-fashion options. ROCK OF AGES

There’s a difference between trends and enduring style, so opt for something that will both suit and timelessly reflect ‘you’. “Round brilliant cut diamonds are the most popular, although pear and emerald

In store we have some wedding rings with princess cut, baguette cut and some a mix of different cuts together.” St Ives-based jeweller Stephanie Stevens (stephaniestevensjewellery.co.uk) considers

the practical elements of ring shapes. “I advise customers to look at the shape that would be best for lifestyle and hand shape. If you have long slender fingers, an oval or marquise shape can compliment your hand really well,” she says. “I have worked with raw ocean diamonds that create some really lovely unique rings as the cut will always be completely different from any other.” Diamonds come in a spectrum of colours, naturally and man-made, from dazzling white to rare pinks and blues, so it’s a case of individual preference. “White diamonds are your classic, most sparkly option,” affirms Jamila. “All our white stones are either vintage or Canadamark which are fully traced from their mine of origin right through their cutting process up to the moment they are on your finger. We love brown diamonds too, they are totally natural and all come from the Argyle mine in Australia – they are also ethically sourced like Canadamark,” she adds. “Brown diamonds range from dark chocolatey tones

But fairly traded and fully traced is definitely the next best thing in our view.”

To be as sustainable as possible, reworking customers’ heirloom diamonds is something Erin Cox also champions. MAKING THE CUT Struggling to distinguish your tux from your tailcoat? Here’s our guide to wedding suits – and how to wear them words Hannah May

Favourbrook

Favourbrook

Morning suit Traditionally, this is the formal ensemble to wear for a wedding occurring before 3pm (hence the name), comprising dress trousers, a white shirt, double-breasted waistcoat and morning coat. Of course, modern style screams for a bespoke approach even to traditional tailoring, so personalise by playing with prints (tie, socks, waistcoat, jacket lining), patterns (pinstripes, checks, polka dots, herringbone), textures (silk waistcoat, dried flower buttonhole) and colour (blue/grey/brown suit, colourful cravat/pocket square, bright waistcoat). Alternatively, stick to the dress code and pair with a top hat and cane to complete the formalities, or relax the look entirely with a coloured shirt or designer silk scarf. Nod to vintage wear by substituting a tailcoat for a ‘Peaky Blinders’ knee-length frock coat with flat cap and skinny tie and prepare to set your fiancé’s heart aflutter.

their James Bond alter ego while remaining perennially on trend. Add a waistcoat or cummerbund for extra formality or pick a more pared-back ensemble by donning the bare essentials (with or without a bow tie). This is one look where you can’t mess with the original format too much, so splice in some personality via the minutiae such as varying the tone to a midnight blue (or brown or grey – so long as the trouser colour is the same) or sporting an eye-catching – though not too blingy – pair of cufflinks, designer shiny Oxford shoes, turtleneck instead of a shirt, coloured bow tie, or a luxe velvet jacket.

Lounge suit This is one of the most popular outfits and includes a two-button (single or double-breasted, two or three-piece) suit, tie and Oxford shoes. Experiment with your lapels, tie thickness, shirt and suit colours, and fabrics – texture such as tweed is de rigueur – to create a fabulously bespoke outfit, which can be made even more ‘you’ with those allimportant accessories such as pocket square, boutonniere, braces, cufflinks and shoes.

Autumn Tweed, corduroy and flannel are winning materials for autumn, while warm and rich berry tones like burgundy and burnt orange (today’s most statement tux) or earthy shades of ochre and rustic browns work wonderfully as seasonal colour schemes. Dress head-totoe in these opulent tones or pick a feature item such as your jacket and infuse additional style with the extras such as a paisley print tie, dried flower buttonhole, velvet bow tie or check waistcoat. Slip on a pair of luxe loafers for laid-back style.

Favourbrook

Winter This time of year gives grooms the opportunity to indulge in a heady dose of luxury. Think heavier, feel-me fabrics such as tweed, wool and velvet in brooding tones of deep midnight blues, dark ferns and slate greys. Throw in some pattern via the neckwear or waistcoat, or a knit as an alternative, with a pinch of plaid, herringbone or a unique print. Mash your materials and motifs for an eclectic ensemble or focus on a textured feature or two for a more subtle edge.

LOVE IN THE VINEYARD

The balmy romance of a Californian vineyard was the alluring inspiration for this luxurious styled shoot. “We wanted to show that it is possible to have a beautiful and intimate destination-style wedding without travelling abroad,” explains photographer Jen Shoubridge of Jennifer Jane Photography, who coordinated the shoot alongside wedding stylist Leanna Elizabeth of Leanna Elizabeth Weddings. And, set in the rolling Devon hills, the picturesque climes of Brickhouse Vineyard made the perfect setting to showcase the dream Californian vineyard wedding, combining a laid-back East Coast mood with notes of luxury and sophistication reminiscent of the Napa Valley wine country. “The look is relaxed, elegant and romantic with a palette of greens, soft whites and a dash of burgundy inspired by the location,” says Jen. Amidst the warm atmosphere of the 18th century Round House, the table setting is a picture of elegance with its white silk table runner, crystal glassware, gold cutlery and urn centrepiece brimming with soft cream and burgundy blooms. “The soft and whimsical florals of the centrepiece followed through into the floral arch of the ceremony area for a luxurious statement look,” she continues. Echoing the mood, the cake is a simple and stylish confection, its white iced tiers decorated with sugarcraft flowers. The stationery is similarly chic with gorgeous accents of gold, and nods to the vineyard location in the wine bottle table plans and cork place settings. Completing the picture, the groom wears a classic black tux, while the bride dazzles in the clean lines and exquisite detailing of a Sottero & Midgley gown paired with a relaxed updo and dewy complexion – a picture of laid-back modern glamour befitting this pocket of California in Devon.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Set amidst a traditional working farm flanked by fields that roll down to the sea, new South Hams’ wedding venue The Grain Store was the striking starting point for this styled shoot. Bringing the wild beauty of its location indoors, natural textures abound in this stunning events space, from warm woods to textured stone, while details such as the dramatic cartwheel chandeliers are a nod to the rustic and industrial character of its setting. “We were inspired by the origin of a grain store and its associations with the outdoors and the wild Devon countryside,” explains photographer Laura Farmer of Freeformimages Photography. “We also wanted to draw on the industrial feel of the large workhouse barn, merging and blending the styles and materials from the industrial and natural world to create balance in texture and colour.” Worn metallic and copper accents feature throughout, blending beautifully with the wood textures of the venue and furnishings; shades of blue that echo the changing mood of the nearby ocean provide the perfect contrast, together with lush foliage-heavy floral arrangements and posies of dried flowers. “We worked with reclaimed and recycled materials for the copper and wood details, such as the candelabras, archway and cake stand,” explains Laura. The textured tiers of the cake and hints of copper embrace the industrial feel, the tones blending perfectly with the copper-edged stationery. The bridal look embraces the aesthetic in the copper hints of the handcrafted dress as well as the luxe geometric crown and hairpins of copper and gold. Even the handfasting cord is woven with hues of copper and silver to tie in with the styling. And this celebration of the surrounding landscape wouldn’t be complete without Devon produce: Devon Cove’s handcrafted vodka and liqueurs, together with fresh and vibrant grazing platters, bring gorgeous colour and flavour to the scene – a striking canvas for a modern rustic celebration.

feature | STYLING | IN DEEP

With its wave-lashed cliffs and beguiling sea cave, North Devon’s Watermouth Cove made an entrancing setting for a styled shoot inspired by Amphitrite, Greek goddess of the sea. “I wanted the shoot to have drama, texture and movement, so we included lots of natural materials and fabrics, which were picked up by the strong sea breeze,” explains photographer Katherine Mills of Katherine and her Camera. ‘We used tones of blue and grey for the tablescape to reflect the moody nature of the sea, mixed with white florals including roses and dried ruscus and palms,” she continues. “A muslin table runner added to the textures on the table alongside the black candlesticks. We wanted the flowers to emulate white sea foam.” Tying in beautifully with the flowers, the bride’s shimmering white bridal gown looks striking against the seaworn cliffs, her coastal crown completing her goddess-like ensemble with delicate pearls. The sea nymph bridesmaid, meanwhile, wears a tulle skirt and lace bodysuit. “The skirt moved beautifully in the sea breeze, looking like rolling waves,” says Katherine. Adorned with shells, sea glass and ribbons fluttering in the salty breeze, the cake slots into the ethereal scene seamlessly, tying in with the soft marine shades of the stationery and hand-scripted shells dotted across the tablescape. Then there’s the Montana sapphire ring; its tones changing with the light, its mesmerising blues echo the moods of the sea – the perfect ring for sea-loving souls.

If you’re getting married on the coast, there’s no better source of inspiration than the ocean for your sweet centrepiece. This sandcastle cake above shouts fun beach wedding, while a shell-topped confection sets the mood for an ethereal celebration at the water’s edge.

LOVE THROUGH A LENS

How will you remember your wedding day? By recounting stories and reminiscing whenever you hear ‘your song’? And what about sharing it with other people and generations to come? That is the purpose of your wedding photography, so picking the right person to capture your day is essential to ensure an album that you’ll pore over throughout your days as a married couple. You’ll undoubtedly already have an idea of your photography requirements and style preferences, but if in doubt, dive into as many different sources of inspiration as possible. Our online directory (wedmagazine. co.uk/directory) along with the plethora

Peter Prior Photography

of photography features, fashion shoots and real weddings in these pages and our website are a fabulous start, while visual

Freckle Photography

platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram are other ways to introduce yourself to the variety and to see what you’re most drawn to. You’ll soon notice that you lean toward a particular style that’ll help with your final selection.

Clare Kinchin Photography

Steer yourself in the right direction by asking yourselves a few pertinent questions. Do you prefer posed, styled shots or natural, reportage-style images?

Peter Prior Photography

Is landscape an important factor in your day that you’d like captured or are you looking more for traditional family portraiture? Will the type of photography match the type of wedding you’re planning? For example, if you’re opting for an elopement, it’ll be a case of just the two of you and your photographer, while an extended festival-style wedding at a sprawling, multi-setting venue might require a pair of professional photographers to cover every angle. “Will the edit last the test of time?” asks photographer Tom Frost (thomasfrostphotography.com) on considering how your tastes and photographic trends might change in the future. By being too fashionable now, you run the risk of dating or disliking your images in decades to come. “I have couples who really want large landscapes with them just as dots in it. I always aim to give my couples a selection and say to them that I want to create stylish images that they will want to put on their wall and images that they will want to have on their bedside table: intimate romantic ones that are private and just for them…” he explains by way Clare Kinchin Photography

of considering an individual approach.

In short, how does your vision compare with your photographer’s, and what will they realistically be able to achieve based on the setting, season, style of wedding and your expectations? Once you’ve transformed your wishes into a checklist, it’s time to start contacting possible candidates. Firstly, ask if they’re available on your date – it’ll save time and disappointment if you have a protracted conversation in which you click before discovering they are already booked. “Ask to see some full galleries to get a feel for how the photographer works throughout the day at different weddings, and think about whether you can see their style fitting with your personalities and your day,” says

Peter Prior Photography

Emma Latham from Freckle Photography (frecklephotography.co.uk). A few spectacular shots might catch your eye, but consistency is essential to ensure that each person and moment of your day is photographed to its best effect. “It’s a good idea to meet up via Zoom, have a chat on the phone or even meet in person – although some of the most indemand photographers can’t always meet in person so don’t let this factor put you off,” she says. “You will spend more time with your photographer than any of the other suppliers so it’s important you get on well and feel comfortable with them,” she says. Try to establish whether you have chemistry and are likely to get along Nova Wedding Photography

Freckle Photography

enough for them to be your constant shadow throughout the day. Remember that however incredible their photography might be, if you don’t feel comfortable around them that awkwardness is likely to translate into the shots they take of you, resulting in neither of you being likely to get the best images out of your day. “Always go with your gut,” urges Emma. “It has to feel right.”

Freckle Photography

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything that concerns you or you’re unclear about,” advises photographer Peter Prior (peterprior.com). “It is important that you know what you are signing up for,” he says of ensuring there are no hidden costs or limitations on their service. “Check with more than one photographer to get a feel for the standards you should expect, and try to go on personal

recommendation if possible too,” he adds. www.wedmagazine.co.uk

If you’re still not sure, whittle it down to two or three and ask for a test session or engagement shoot. This will provide a great precursor on what to expect on the day and allow you to practise being in front of the lens while familiarising yourself with the person behind it. “You get to meet them in context, have a mini adventure together and get to know one another so on the big day it feels like a mate turning up!” explains Emma. “Don’t forget, they will be interacting with your guests too, so you want someone who will be a positive impact on the day. I focus on putting couples at ease, having fun and making it relaxed,” says Tom. “When shooting, I always get the couple to focus on each other and the environment, absorbing the sound, sights and moments,” he reveals of a few of the techniques employed to help couples unwind and be themselves in front of the camera. For couples feeling shy or even anxious about being

Nova Wedding Photography

photographed, there are other ways to increase your confidence and help make it an enjoyable experience. It seems simple enough, but try to ensure that you look like you on your wedding day. Consider everything from the dress, suit, shoes, jewellery, flowers and make-up in order to feel fully comfortable in your own skin. For example, if you never wear make-up, opt for a minimal and pared-back look, while if you always struggle to walk in heels, pick a pair of flats instead. Don’t swamp your petite frame with a bulbous ballgown that you can barely move in, or choose a slinky, skin-baring sheath if it means you’ll fret about potential wardrobe malfunctions all day. Chances are the camera will capture your sense of dislocation, so work at being the most naturally ‘wedified’ you that you can be. You could even get a friend to do a mock shoot with you in your complete outfit to see how it feels and looks on film to give yourself time to change it if necessary before the day. An important factor in the decision-making process, as with all

Peter Prior Photography

else, is budget. “You get what you pay for,” cautions Tom. “More than 10 years ago when I started, it used to cost a few hundred for shooting a wedding, but the skills and experience and gear that I bring to the day have pushed the price up,” he says while highlighting the value of the time, expertise, equipment and knowledge that you’ll be paying your photographer for. “It’s one day that can’t be redone, so do it right!” he warns. Think of it as an investment for a lifetime of gorgeous pictures that you and your loved ones can always treasure. Consider the particulars and whether your photographer offers them. Most will travel and tailor their packages to suit your specific requirements, but if you know you want something that they can’t or won’t provide, then you’ll have to look elsewhere. Think about the time frame – how long and at which points of the day will you want them present for? Ceremony only, or the entire weekend from the rehearsal dinner to the post-wedding activities?

Freckle Photography

Once you’ve made your choice, relax and focus on relishing your day. This will allow your photographer to do the same while blending into the background in order to create the best and most ‘you’ photo album possible. “My top tip is trust your photographer and have the best time of your life; happy, relaxed people always look good on camera and the emotions translate wonderfully,” reassures Emma. COUNTRY HOUSES & CASTLES Live out your very own fairytale in one of Devon’s elegant country houses or majestic castles

Pynes House Believed to be the inspiration for Jane Austen’s Barton Park in ‘Sense and Sensibility’, this elegant Georgian house provides the most breathtaking location for your very own love story. Set within 37 acres of parkland in the Exe Valley, the glorious gardens hint at the immaculate interiors, where you can marry in a choice of state rooms, all bathed in natural light and exquisitely styled. For dizzying romance, take your vows before the grand doors on the entrance steps with the majestic tree-lined avenue and gardens as your backdrop, before feasting and dancing the night away beneath the sparkling chandeliers of the Ballroom or, for larger affairs, in a marquee in the grounds. Romantic details such as the Romeo and Juliet-style balcony and the myrtle bush in the rose garden, which is believed to have grown from a clipping from Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet, add to the dreaminess, while the beautiful bedrooms make for an incredibly special place to spend the night. pyneshouse.co.uk Total capacity: 96 for dining in the house, 130 for ceremony in the house Rebecca Goddard

SMALL WEDDINGS OF DREAMS

“We loved the thought of a stress-free day that just focused on the two of us being together. Neither of us had ever particularly dreamt of having a huge do and when we host we’re generally concerned with making sure all of our friends and family are enjoying themselves, so it was lovely to not be thinking about everyone else and plan a special moment together. This meant we could be more spontaneous with the planning and pick things that were truly just for us. We love taking trips as a couple, particularly in remote little dwellings amongst nature, so we saw this as getting to have an extra special trip away together whilst committing to one another. Devon is such a beautiful area whilst not being too far away from our home in Bristol, which is what drew us to Brickhouse Vineyard. A roundhouse setting amongst rolling hills with a mix of rustic and modern styles that we adore, a garden in bloom, a vineyard and huge meadow. It felt special without being too formal. Liaising with Joanna the owner instantly put us at ease as she was friendly and helpful organising our day. We booked our florist Holly after seeing her use of unique and local wildflowers, and my outfit search led me to a voluminous layered tulle skirt that I knew was the one. I loved the thought of a fairytale dress that was the opposite of my day-to-day wear. On the morning of the wedding, my hair stylist and make-up artist perfectly created the bohemian look I wanted. At the venue we were warmly welcomed by our two witnesses – our talented photographer Megan and our friendly coordinator Phoebe – who ensured we were topped up with champagne during the day! It felt like a short moment of greetings before we were walking through the roundhouse and declaring our vows. I remember us both beaming from ear to ear whilst looking into each other’s eyes and holding hands tightly. Then there were cheers and clapping from our registrars and witnesses as we signed documents and walked out to the gardens. Champagne in hand, we then explored the grounds with Megan for photos together whilst we were still on an adrenaline high! A moment that sticks out to me was Dan exclaiming he saw a deer whilst we all turned to see nothing but the rolling hills! I thought he was being a tease but he stood by it that there was a mysterious deer leaping through the grounds, so we were then both on the lookout – a moment you wouldn’t get back in the city! I’ve always loved his sense of humour and it was a little event for us to look back at and laugh about from the day! After the photos, we were left to enjoy some private time together with an afternoon tea in the roundhouse: a glorious platter of tiny cakes, scones and chocolate strawberries, paired with champagne of course! This was a moment to relax, let the day sink in and enjoy the feast for the senses. We had another walk around the grounds to take in the natural beauty before we were joined again by Megan and Phoebe for our first dance. We chose the song ‘Firestone’ by Kygo ft. Conrad Sewell, a song that has significance to us whilst being upbeat to dance to! I would so recommend an intimate wedding – it’s such a relaxed, stress-free event where you can really focus on what the wedding is about: the two of you! You can still go all out with styling and decor, and really have fun with it, as there are no rules about how you should celebrate your special day.” Venue Brickhouse Vineyard brickhousevineyard.co.uk Photography Mimosa Photography mimosaphotography.uk Coordination Elisabeth Shell Events elisabethshellevents.com Cake Carol from The Folly thefollydevon.com Flowers Holly Bee Flowers hollybeeflowers.co.uk Bride’s skirt StylishBrideAccs etsy.com/uk/shop/StylishBrideAccs Groom’s bow tie, braces &shirt Trendhim trendhim.co.uk Hair Bridal Hair by Rosanne bridalhairbyrosanne.co.uk Make-up Laura Le Page lauralepagebridalmakeup.com

JADE AND RICHARD

Jade and Richard created a dream North Devon escape at Millbrook Estate

SMALL WEDDINGS OF DREAMS

“Initially, an intimate wedding wasn’t something we’d even considered because we both have large families. We’d gone from a huge Nigerian wedding with hundreds of guests to getting married abroad. Then Covid came along, and as much as it changed our plans, it opened up the possibility of something we had never even thought about: getting married without anything or anyone else to worry about! We had just put down a deposit on our first home, so we re-evaluated our finances and, as we really didn’t want to postpone our wedding, an intimate wedding seemed like the ideal option. We love Devon and go on camping trips to North Devon each year. After getting engaged on Baggy Point, it felt perfect to return as it was somewhere that now had an even bigger place in our hearts. After searching lots of different venues, we stumbled across Millbrook Estate and, within half an hour, we had booked a week away in Devon. Millbrook is the most tranquil and welcoming venue; there were so many little touches that made the day more than we could have imagined. Having an intimate wedding meant we were sipping prosecco in the hot tub the night before with nothing to organise, and the same for the day itself. On the morning of the wedding, we both woke up in the most beautiful cottage, had breakfast and I headed to the venue. It was so relaxing I didn’t even really consider it being a wedding until the flowers arrived. I wanted something seasonal, and the meadow flowers were made up on the day with whatever had bloomed – they were unreal. There were no nerves, no stress and absolutely nothing to do other than be pampered and drink bubbly. The ceremony was perfect and we had the opportunity to write our own vows, which were really special to share with each other. The photos were such fun and we felt like we were on a walk through an enchanted woodland. We then had an afternoon tea with cheese platters and champagne. After the ceremony, we found ourselves saying: ‘We can do anything we like now!’ We felt so relaxed. If you’d have told me that by 6pm on my wedding day, I’d be by the beach eating fish and chips and sipping champagne from a paper cup, I’d never have believed it! But it couldn’t have been more us. If you’re considering an elopement, I would say don’t rule anything out – talk through lots of ideas and see which feels right. You have to be prepared that family members might not understand your decision, but be reassured that if you both think sharing your day with just the two of you is right for you, then do it. Find somewhere special, somewhere you can treasure and visit. For us, getting married in Devon where we can visit year after year makes Millbrook, Croyde and Baggy Point so much more than destinations – they’re a part of our story now. We got to really enjoy the day and be present, relax and have fun. Just us and two of our closest friends in our favourite place. It really was such a dream.” Venue Millbrook Estate millbrookestate.co.uk Photography Freeformimages Photography freeformimages.co.uk

SMALL WEDDINGS OF DREAMS

“We have always wanted a small wedding. In the end, the deciding factor was that we did not have to be distracted by entertaining others and could focus purely on ourselves. We both have quite busy careers, so quiet days are rare and a wedding for just two of us in a calm place was a perfect opportunity to enjoy each other with no distractions. Despite being from overseas, the majority of our relationship has been spent in England and we wanted a wedding that looked very typically English. We also wanted the wedding to be outside. When we saw Hareston Manor we immediately knew this was the place and were super happy the venue had a slot available for us. On the morning of the wedding, we had a classic English breakfast outside in the gazebo watching the fields and sheep. We then got ready in the manor and had our civil ceremony in the chapel. Afterwards, we had photos taken around the manor, cut the cake and settled down for an outdoor afternoon tea. It was very romantic with a beautiful set-up. We had some time to relax after the picnic, before sitting down for a five-course dinner in the tipi and finishing the day with watching the stars. Tereza wore a Flora Bridal dress with a flower crown, while I wore a navy blue tuxedo with a bow tie. We had a traditional Australian lamington made into a wedding cake, which was super tasty. We kept the flowers fairly simple with white and green shades to complement the natural beauty of Hareston Manor. The owners of Hareston Manor, the Bassetts, made an incredible effort to make us happy throughout, anticipating everything that we could have wanted. They really have thought about every little detail. I would certainly recommend an elopement wedding – it is great if you want to focus on each other and enjoy a very intimate day together. I assume it is not for everyone but would strongly recommend this for couples who are busy as a very quiet day can only be to their benefit.” Photography Summit Imagery summitimagery.co.uk Venue Hareston Manor harestonwedding.co.uk Dress Flora Bridal flora-bride.com Flowers Thorn thornflowers.uk Cake Sweet Buns sweetbunsdevon.co.uk

LIV AND MIKE

Liv and Mike savoured a magical Christmas wedding at Rockbeare Manor

SMALL WEDDINGS OF DREAMS

“After two cancellations, being able to actually get married in an intimate wedding appealed to us, but we also liked the idea of surprising everyone at our eventual, bigger wedding. It is rare outside of soap operas that the groom gets to shock everyone by starting his speech with: ‘I have to confess I›m already married!’ However, the real draw was the opportunity to spend the entire day together from getting ready to our nightcap, and not worrying about anyone else or if everything was going smoothly. We had been living in Portsmouth whilst planning our wedding. After looking at dozens of wedding venues in Hampshire, Liv decided to look at venues near where she grew up in Devon. Rockbeare Manor immediately stood out and, as soon as we arrived, the venue gave us that unmistakable feeling that we were in the right place. We booked for a festive wedding and, as we were always planning on still having the big day and we made the decision to get married at such short notice, we went without any of the usual details such as the cake and flowers. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with mince pies and champagne by the fire. We took in the Christmas atmosphere and enjoyed having an entire country manor to ourselves. We enjoyed a stunning brunch overlooking the grounds and, once we had eaten way too much for people who were about to get married, it was time to get ready. Being able to share moments like Liv putting her late father›s cufflinks on me and getting that special moment captured by our photographer Jamie was a dream come true. Escorting Liv through the manor and into the ceremony room made it feel like we were getting married together rather than just meeting at the altar. The ceremony itself was a blur – I mostly remember how happy and beautiful Liv looked staring back at me. When it was time to leave the ceremony room, we started spontaneously dancing to our chosen music as an unplanned first dance. It took everyone including us by surprise and felt like something out of a movie; it was our favourite moment. All the Rockbeare staff gave us a heart-warming reception, and then it was time for the photo shoot. Once Jamie was finished, we got ready for dinner. As soon as we came back, down the Rockbeare staff ordered Liv to put her wedding outfit back on as it was too good to change out of – and of course she happily obliged! We enjoyed more fabulous food before retiring to the drawing room to enjoy a nightcap, a log fire and some chess… desperate for the day not to end! Our advice to other couples considering an elopement or intimate wedding is don’t compromise on everything! Keep key parts of what would have been your big day to avoid any ‘what if’ thoughts – we were lucky enough to still use our venue and photographer. Also remember who the wedding is really for when you have doubts or guilt about not inviting particular people. If they do really care about you, they will understand and be happy for you.” Photography Jamie Dodd jamiedoddphotography.co.uk Venue Rockbeare Manor rockbearemanor.co.uk Bride’s skirt Etsy etsy.com/uk body PrettyLittleThing prettylittlething.com

Beautiful love stories from across Devon

CASSIE AND JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY: THESE WILD SOULS

LAID-BACK KIND OF LOVE Cassie and James’ 1970s-inspired wedding fused rustic decor with creative contributions from close family and friends Cassie made the bold first move when she encountered James in a cocktail bar – “I chatted him up then asked him if he wanted my number!” she reveals – but it was James who proposed to her on a balcony in Sorrento. “It was such a moment,” she swoons. Hayne Devon was the ideal venue for their ’70s bohemia bash. “We love a ’70s colour palette, but wanted it to feel rustic and chilled,” explains Cassie. “I had a vision and I knew exactly what I wanted – plus, I’m a natural planner. My sister-in-law helped with decorating the tables and did an amazing job,” she adds of the centrepieces that were hand-foraged, dried and arranged alongside individual potted succulents dotted atop hessian placemats as favours. Created by Cassie’s friend Lydia, the stationery was key in helping to set the theme. “I gave her the brief and she made a bespoke ’70s-style design, which we absolutely loved!” says Cassie. Another friend accentuated the uber-cool aesthetic with the brilliant signage, while the outfits perfectly portrayed laid-back ’70s prairie style. Cassie’s billowing long-sleeved gown by Rue de Seine featured graphic chevron lace, a gorgeous open portrait back and side cut-outs, while James’ relaxed ensemble combined sand-coloured chinos with braces, boots, a fedora and dried flower boutonniere. The personalisation continued at the ceremony with the couple’s friend Paul Sharod playing guitar, along with another very special appearance. “We asked Ben, one of our best pals, if he would do us a blessing as we wanted a personal ceremony on the day,” says Cassie. “He took the whole thing very seriously and even got ordained as a Dudeist minister by The Church of the Latter-Day Dude. It was hilarious!” After becoming officially wed and uniquely blessed, the newly-weds and their guests were treated to a sumptuous menu comprising slow-cooked chicken, smoked salmon, smashed chapa potatoes with chive, veggie and couscous salad, and roasted fireside squash. A day full of eclectic entertainment, Cassie and James ensured that their guests were happy and occupied throughout, courtesy of Sparkle & Co’s fabulous glitter services alongside a photo booth and a host of funky covers from eight-piece brass and percussion party outfit, No Limit Street Band. “My most memorable moment was our first dance, which was to Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’,” says Cassie when asked to share her highlights. “I was standing on the dance floor waiting (impatiently) for James, wondering where the hell he was. Then he strides in – in an inflatable rocket outfit!” She shares one simple pearl of wisdom when it comes to the wedding planning. “Delegate!” she implores, after designing a day that included the help and talents of many of her and James’ friends and family. “Don’t try to do everything yourself as it becomes overwhelming.”

MON AMOUR

When Chloe and Adam’s plans to marry in France were dashed, they decided on an elegant wedding at new venue Moreton House – planned in just eight weeks! Meeting at work nine years ago, Chloe and Adam’s friendship led to romance and, ultimately, a proposal that was supposed to happen on a surprise trip to North Devon. “Adam had booked for us to stay at Tawstock Castle, but lockdown hit and the trip was cancelled. He held off for a little while as none of us knew how long lockdown would last for and he wanted to wait for another good opportunity,” explains Chloe. “We ended up buying a new house and moving in July and he chose to do it on the same day. We were in the garden, drinking champagne, eating fish and chips, and the sky was bright pink. It was perfect!” The couple began to plan a wedding in Bordeaux; however, with travel restrictions and more lockdown uncertainty looming, they had to cancel. “We didn’t want to delay things, so we planned a last-minute trip down to Devon to view venues,” says Chloe. “Moreton House was the best by far and we fell in love! We booked it for the same date as our original wedding… which was eight weeks away!” It was the first wedding at the lovingly restored Georgian country house, located close to the North Devon coast. “Moreton House reminded us of the ‘Bridgerton’ series, so we tried to include some nods to that on the day,” says Chloe. “We had a string quartet playing current pop music, which was really cool, and the colour scheme was fresh sage green, white and eucalyptus.” The wedding began with an emotional and highly personal ceremony held beneath the venue’s stunning portico entrance dressed beautifully with a flower arch. “We’d already had our legal civil ceremony, so we asked Adam’s dad Nigel to conduct the symbolic wedding ceremony. It was so lovely to have such personal wedding vows. He absolutely smashed it and it meant a lot to us to have him involved,” says Chloe. “The most important thing for us was being able to have the ceremony outside, which we managed to do before it started raining on and off. It was beautiful. A string quartet played our ceremony music, as well as a pianist who was a friend of the band. That part was incredible and so fun!” Staying outside for drinks and photos, the newly-weds and their guests then enjoyed speeches in front of a French chateau tapestry before a sumptuous four-course menu featuring mains of beef or butternut squash wellington, and – as a little nod to the original plans – wedding favours from France: a mini bottle of French cognac, made in Bordeaux. “They went down a treat!” Keeping appetites sated with an indulgent wedding cake made by a chocolatier chef and burgers from a vintage van, it was then time to “party until midnight, finishing the night off with a surprise party around the firepit in the secret garden. Our guests loved it!” Reflecting on her favourite moment, Chloe remembers taking in the ceremony and its aftermath as a particular highlight. “It has to be the moment we walked back down the aisle as husband and wife. It was an incredible feeling... with confetti everywhere!” And as for her top tip, Chloe recommends trying to enjoy the planning process. “Ours was particularly stressful and rushed towards the end, but the day goes by in a flash and before you know it, you’re back to everyday reality!” she says. “Enjoy every moment – everything about the day is worth every little bit of stress in the planning. Plus, I would highly recommend getting a videographer.” And just to top off their perfect day… the couple found out it had rained all day in Bordeaux!

FLORAL FANCY

Amal and Matt’s celebrations were bursting with bright colours, fabulous flowers and memorable musical performances Amal and Matt met on a dating app before embarking upon their first date together at a local bar, which led to them becoming “instantly inseparable”. “It was a Friday night, and we were about to pick up some fish and chips. While we were waiting at home, Matt asked me to close my eyes and listen to a song that he wrote,” says Amal of her sweet proposal. “It was such a beautiful love song with acoustic guitar, violins and soft vocals, and when I opened my eyes, he was holding the ring and asked me to marry him.” Selecting Matt’s parents’ garden as the venue for their wedding, the couple set about creating a celebration with “a relaxed festival vibe filled with colour and music”. “Matt’s parents decided to completely re-landscape their garden and even put in a mini waterfall!” says Amal. “Matt’s mum was busy all summer planting flowers in the garden as she wanted to make sure that there were lots blooming in time for the wedding.” Colour was accentuated by the bright dress code, along with more gorgeous floristry including dahlias, roses, delphiniums, lisianthuses, carnations, chrysanthemums and foliage. In the marquee, a palette of pink, orange, blue and soft green was carried by colourful floral stems in glass vases alongside pillar candles as centrepieces. The scene was completed with pale pink runners, sage green napkins, wooden charger plates and abstract place cards. “As for the rest of the marquee, we chose hanging flower stems in the middle of the ceiling with colourful vintage lampshades,” says Amal. “Outside we also had a mini tipi with rugs and cushions for the kids.” The couple’s civil ceremony at the Ceremony Room in Cockington Court was followed by a horse-drawn carriage ride around Cockington Village, then scenic photos at Thatcher Point. The newly-weds then returned to Matt’s parent’s house for a mini ceremony to include the guests unable to attend that morning. “This was a bit more personal, with readings and musical performances from friends and family, and we wrote our own vows for this one too,” says Amal. “Dan (Matt’s brother) sang one of his originals on his ukulele, Lawrence read ‘The Art of Marriage’ by Wilferd Arlan Peterson and Nick and Louise (Matt’s brother and sister) wrote an original song called ‘Wedding Song’, performing as a duet with Nick on his acoustic guitar.” Plenty of eating, drinking and dancing then ensued, including sharing platters of lemon and herb chicken, Cajun lime salmon and ground rump steak burgers alongside vegetarian dishes of burgers, grilled vegetables and halloumi. For dessert, the wedding cake was served in addition to salted caramel brownies, macarons and seasonal fruits. “My favourite moment was when our dog Bella walked into the middle of the dance floor and joined us during the first dance, stealing all the attention!” laughs Amal. “We always say that she’s our third-wheeler and this was true even on our wedding day!” Enlisting professional help is one of Amal’s top tips for those planning their dream day. “For marquee weddings, there is a lot of additional responsibilities especially with setting up, decorating and tidying up afterwards,” she says. “Consider a wedding stylist and coordinator so you can have peace of mind on the day. Working with a stylist will help you bring all your ideas to life and having someone there to coordinate it all and solve any teething problems is absolutely worth its weight in gold. Nikki at Knots & Kisses understood my vision and put it all together beautifully.” She adds: “Don’t worry about the small stuff. For us, our friends and family really made our wedding. We felt the love and sincerity around us, which made it such a special day.”

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM

Three was the magic number for Sylvie and Nick, when their long-awaited wedding presented guests with fabulous food, music and the chance to be together “Nick and I met 14 years ago whilst working in our holiday jobs at Bicton Park,” says Sylvie of the couple’s first encounter. “We went to university together and have been together ever since.” Nick picked one of their favourite places in the Lake District to pop the question. “It was a stunning day and we seemed to have the whole view over the fells to ourselves. After finding the perfect spot to make a cup of tea, Nick got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” says Sylvie. Their beautiful wedding venue, Rockbeare Manor, was instrumental in reflecting the “classic, timeless and elegant look” of their day. Taking the flowers as the primary focal point to create the colour scheme of dusky pinks, whites and a touch of lavender, Sylvie and Nick designed the rest of the wedding from there. “We had the most beautifully scented O’Hara roses in the bouquets and wonderful pedestal arrangements that framed our outdoor ceremony perfectly,” reveals Sylvie. Being able to wed outside was always the dream, and though they had to rearrange three times due to Covid-related postponements, the day panned out exactly as planned. “My dad walked me down the aisle as my brother played his guitar. It was an emotional, out-of-body experience that I shall never forget. After waiting so long for the moment, it was special to have our family and friends all gathered together,” reflects Sylvie. A drinks reception with a saxophonist followed – “one of the best decisions we made” – as Sylvie and Nick stole away for photos and a few moments together, “which felt incredible”, she reflects. A variety of garden games provided further entertainment for guests, with “the giant Jenga the favourite. It led to lots of laughter, despair and friendships made!”, says Sylvie. Everyone settled down for a delectable dinner of hot smoked salmon risotto and Devon carved beef sirloin rounded off by glazed lemon tart and raspberry sorbet. “Espresso martinis were the drink of the night, including for Nick’s 90-year-old nan!” laughs Sylvie, who shares some of her fondest memories from their day. “Our favourite moment was the speeches. It was so emotional and I don’t think we have ever gone from crying to laughing so quickly,” she reveals. “And we loved our first dance, which we moved outside so our guests could join in.” Ultimately, the wedding was about far more than just the couple themselves, as Sylvie explains. “We loved seeing all our family and friends together in one place after such a difficult couple of years. It meant so much more to us after all the changing plans.” The collaborative effort also stands out in Sylvie’s mind as something that she and Nick appreciated the most. “We are so grateful to the team at Rockbeare Manor, all our suppliers, family and guests for finally making our wedding day happen!” And as far as advice goes, it is this personal sense of community that Sylvie urges other couples to tap into. “We made so many memories getting our families and friends involved in our wedding preparation,” she says. “Share the moment with them – it will also help take the pressure off you on the day.”

ALL THAT JAZZ

Pegs and Will threw an intimate country house wedding filled with vintage accents, whimsical styling and lots of laughter Pegs and Will’s love story began with a fortuitous match on Tinder, leading to a first date in a pub. “In his panic to impress me, Will ordered the first bottle that he saw on the wine menu, completely forgetting that I’d mentioned I detest Chardonnay,” she says. “Will then proceeded to drink the bottle himself, and in his tipsy state ordered the same bottle again!” Luckily, Pegs gave Will the benefit of the doubt and agreed to go for a dog walk the next day “along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond”, and the pair were soon smitten. The sunny climes of Gibraltar made the romantic backdrop to their engagement when Pegs flew out to visit Will during his deployment. After attending a Royal Navy cocktail party on board Will’s submarine, the couple were watching the sunset over Gibraltar Harbour when he got down on one knee and asked an emotional Pegs to marry him. It was Devon – and the scenery and charm of Coombe Trenchard – which provided the dream canvas for their relaxed, intimate wedding. “We went for a vintage-inspired, woody and whimsical style, and my mustard velvet wedding shoes were the inspiration behind the rustic feel we tried to portray,” explains Pegs. With help from Sarah from Coombe Trenchard, and in keeping with the venue’s Arts and Crafts style, the couple kept decorations minimal, and embraced the house’s wild and romantic vibe. “Sarah was there every step of the way. As Coombe Trenchard is her home, she knew what worked best and how to make our vision come alive,” says Pegs. “She was an absolute dream to work with!” The outdoor ceremony and “seeing Pegs walking down the gravel path to the most gorgeous instrumental music, arm in arm with her dad” was Will’s standout moment of the day – although the weather didn’t get the memo. “A light shower during the ceremony gave us all a wee giggle when the guests rushed to get their brollies up, but the clouds parted, the sun came out and we were able to enjoy the refreshing spring sunshine,” says Pegs. “The rain droplets twinkled on the flowers as we sipped our Pimm’s, bopped to 1940s swing and jazz music, and had a good old blether,” says Pegs, who reveals her favourite moment was seeing Will standing under the clock tower draped in twinkling wisteria, “looking so handsome in his naval uniform”. A banquet-style dinner followed, featuring roasted pork belly and salsa verde, and roasted celeriac and romesco with Cornish herby new potatoes, before the semi-naked cake was cut using Will’s grandfather’s ceremonial sword. “The naval sword, which was awarded to Will’s grandfather when he was at Dartmouth in the 1950s, was used to cut his grandparents’ wedding cake, his parents’ wedding cake, and now our own!” says Pegs. Will also wore his other grandfather’s gold cufflinks. “Will stood proud knowing he wore something from both grandfathers, so they were with him in spirit though sadly not in person.” Come nightfall, the newly-weds kicked off the party to shanty songs from The Fisherman’s Friends. “From start to finish, it was absolutely blissful,” reflects Pegs. Describing their wedding as “a beautiful, petite and intimate day fuelled by champagne and Cornish Rattler”, what would the couple say to those considering a smaller wedding? “Big weddings aren’t the be all and end all. Small and intimate weddings can be just, if not even more, enjoyable!” says Pegs. “Try to DIY as much as possible. We made our own gin and soaps as favours, which was so much fun and great for an activity to do together. Reuse, recycle and upcycle friends and family’s hand-me-downs, and beg, borrow and steal props and decorations,” she advises. “Finally, if your venue doesn’t come with a coordinator, we would recommend getting one – they will save your marriage!”

FLYING HIGH

Though it was smaller than originally planned, Charlotte and Cameron couldn’t have been happier with their intimate wedding Charlotte and Cameron were school sweethearts who went their separate ways before leaving for university. “Then 10 years after school we reconnected on a dating app and the rest is history!” reveals Charlotte of their rekindled romance. “We were on a city break in Lisbon,” she says, reminiscing about Cameron’s unforgettable proposal. “We had walked up to St Jorge’s Castle and were wandering around the grounds when a bench built into the castle wall became available. We sat down and when I looked back at Cam, he was down on one knee. It was perfect and very romantic.” The Oak Barn was their romantic rural venue of choice, dressed in their chosen palette of steel blue, gold and white. “We prefer a rustic look, but didn’t really have a specific theme as such,” Charlotte explains. Planning a smaller wedding meant that most of the guests were able to stay at the venue the night before, commencing celebrations early with dinner at a local pub. “It was lovely to be able to spread the wedding over the whole weekend, especially as we weren’t able to see much of each other beforehand thanks to Covid,” she comments. Breakfast, bubbly and being surrounded by her bridesmaids and the female members of her family was a particular highlight for Charlotte as she readied herself for the day ahead. “My nan had brought the albums from her wedding as well as my mum’s and aunts’ weddings, so it was lovely to look through those. The morning was very relaxed with lots of laughter and happy tears!” she fondly recalls. The bridal party looked the picture of relaxed elegance: Charlotte paired her lace gown with a bouquet of cream blooms, while her bridesmaids carried delicate bundles of gypsophila. “My mum looked absolutely beautiful in her wedding outfit,” recalls Charlotte. Her dad then came to greet her in the bridal suite for a “special moment” just before she and Cameron were wed in the Acorn Barn. “The registrar was wonderful and said some lovely things,” says Charlotte, who joined her husband alongside family and friends for canapés and bubbly in the sun-filled gardens as a saxophonist set the relaxed tone. A three-course wedding breakfast was then served in the Oak Barn, consisting of tomato soup, pâté, beef, mushroom gnocchi and a delicious trio of desserts. “My mum had made sloe gin and various other flavours of gin and vodka, which we used for our favours, and everyone enjoyed tucking into those,” adds Charlotte. Al fresco drinks were enjoyed as the band set up, kick-starting the reception with a performance of ‘High’ by Lighthouse Family for Charlotte and Cameron’s first dance. “After we danced alone for a few minutes, everyone joined us and formed a circle around us singing along, which was a wonderful moment,” she says. As the sun dipped below the horizon, it was time for sparklers under the oak tree. “It was a wonderful day, and despite it being much smaller than we originally planned, it was perfect. The only thing missing was my brother and his family - they were unable to make it over as they live abroad,” says Charlotte. “We would highly recommend an intimate wedding!” And when it comes to planning advice, Charlotte’s words of wisdom urge other couples to take their time. “I was extremely organised; however, there were some things that I changed my mind over as time went on and I wished I hadn’t rushed into the decision. As much as things need to be booked ahead of time, try not to rush,” she implores. “It’s easy to get carried away with the spending, so make sure you think about what is most important to you,” she adds. “And don’t stress on the day about the small things – no one else knows what you have planned apart from you.”

YOU ARE THE REASON

Although they had to wait an extra year to tie the knot, Rosie and James pulled out all the stops for their entertaining and top-tasting celebration of love Rosie and James became an item while studying at Loughborough University and became engaged during a trip to Croatia when James dropped to one knee in Paklenica National Park. “We decided to hike above the canyon and when we arrived at a lookout spot, I went to take in the breathtaking views,” recalls Rosie. “James called my name and took my hand, and as I turned around, he asked me to marry him.” They were forced to delay their plans for a year due to Covid, but luckily their original suppliers were still available for the revised date. The event at Rosie’s parents’ home was planned with a “rustic but clean look” in mind, blending a palette of blush and gold shades to create a beautiful backdrop. Glass vases, tabletops and milk churns were adorned with flowers and large petal confetti, alongside a “spectacular floral display for the ceremony – but kept rustic with a nod to the venue and its moorland charm”, she notes. Rosie’s father led her down the aisle to the stirring soundtrack of John Legend’s ‘Conversations in the Dark’, and it is the ceremony – “that was truly shaped to us as a couple and our relationship” – that Rosie and James both cite as their most memorable part of the day. “Hearing the words James wrote as his vows will forever be a highlight,” says Rosie. “Though you have many people around you during that moment, you truly feel like the only two people in the world.” Exiting to a shower of confetti, the newly-weds headed off for photos on the moors while guests refreshed with Pimm’s, Buck’s Fizz and canapés. “With the incredible weather we were able to take it all in as a couple, recognising that we had finally made it,” recalls Rosie of those precious post-ceremony moments. A feast of chicken breast; crispy pork belly; and butternut squash, spinach and ricotta filo tart was completed with a dessert trio comprising dark and white chocolate brownie, crème brûlée and raspberry pavlova. Speeches were toasted with Jägerbombs – James’ favourite drink – while guests helped themselves to a variety of tipples from a spirit bar and large tin baths. “The afternoon entertainment was provided by the hilarious Ady Byng with his pig racing,” laughs Rosie. “The faces of many guests when he started was a pure look of shock, but a few races in and everything went wild!” Rosie had another surprise in store by changing into dress number two ahead of a sunset photo shoot, returning to wow guests and dance the night away to party folk band, The Nashville Heat. “Our first dance was to ‘You are the Reason’ by Calum Scott, followed by the best floor-filling songs feasible. It was the first social setting many of our guests had been to since the start of Covid – and, wow, did everyone relax and celebrate the day with us!” says Rosie. “Our aim was to have a celebration that was just pure happiness and an opportunity for people to fully relax following such a challenging year!” she continues. “Due to the remote location, no one had any signal, so we were able to fully shut off and enjoy every moment of the wedding, which was truly refreshing,” adds Rosie of another highlight before sharing her top planning advice. “Plan little but often,” she suggests. “Being consistent will help ease any stress and allow time to enjoy it. And remember with everything you plan that it is for you and your partner: this is the one time where you should be able to put yourselves first.”

stick to lift up when the couple walked back down. It was a lovely surprise and looked great in the pictures. Rebecca Smoke and mirrors. Use smoke bombs for a colourful send-off. Available in a wide range of colours, they can set the perfect mood, whether you would like vibrant rainbow colours or something stylish like dark grey. This works best for summer weddings, or those who are having a grand exit when it is still light, unless you have illumination (and be aware they can stain!). Jessica Fly the flag. Incorporate your favours into the send-off by giving everyone personalised flags or bunting to wave at the end of the night, which they can then take home as a keepsake. Rebecca Dancing queens. The bridal party could perform a choreographed wedding dance for a fun and energetic send-off. Alternatively, line up your guests and simply dance your way out! Jessica Happy ending. Think about how you’ll physically depart – perhaps a pushbike or motorbike for more active or daredevil couples! Rebecca Swept away. Is there anything more romantic than sailing off into the sunset after your wedding? If you are having a coastal wedding, consider hiring a yacht to sail off to spend your first night as a married couple at sea. Jessica
