STARTING FRESH

I KNOW IT’S CLICHÉD, but I love the fresh start of a new year. Even in the clutches of cold and early sunsets, I always feel a renewed sense of purpose and commitment—and I’ve always been this way. In my youth, I would make lists of resolutions. And while I loved the idea of it all, I rarely—if ever—stuck to any of them, just like most people. Today, I set goals, and I’ve learned to have a relationship with them, meaning that I review them and take small actions toward them daily.

We welcome the new year with some new content departments in AvidLifestyle. One of which is Healthy Living, where you’ll find content for the body and mind. Our first article in this section is for those of you inspired to set goals and meet them. Writer Amanda Lacey shares tips for how to do it in Achieve Your Greatest Goals on page 52.

One of your goals might be to get your home organized. For our feature article (Call to Order, page 32), writer Paula M. Bodah asked local designers to share inspiring spaces that top the list for organizing: closets, office, mudrooms and more. And believe me, they are as eye-catching as they are streamlined.

Speaking of closets, maybe you need a new personal style this year. Haillee Lucchesi introduces us to some fabulous closet staples for a truly Colorado look (Classic Colorado Chic, page 48).

This is, of course, snow season, so we’ve got our sights set on the slopes. Meet Ted Enyon, owner of Meier Skis, a company making custom skis and snowboards and harnessing an environmentally friendly ethos in everything it does (Making Skis from Trees, page 56). And, if you want to access the slopes and experience your favorite mountains in a whole new way, consider snowbiking. A LOCAL GALLERY CREATES a whimsical collection of conceptual art

Buying art for your home can be tricky and even overwhelming. It’s such a deeply personal expression by the artist, but you also want it to be representative of your own experience with the art and even a reflection of your personal taste and design aesthetic. And it’s great if at least some of the main art pieces throughout your home have some level of continuity, whether it be color or style or even medium. To help buyers envision an art plan, while having a wonderful time experiencing the art, Laura Phelps Rogers organizes exhibitions with a continuum in mind. Her latest, Menagerie, which runs through the end of March at FooLPRoof Art in the RiNo Art District, showcases conceptual works from 15 artists (eight of whom are Colorado-based) that all adhere in one way or another to a wild, whimsical theme. “I designed this exhibit to be palpable for the consumer,” she says. “It allows them to envision the work in their own homes.”

THE DENVER TECH CENTER has always been something of a hybrid. As its name implies, the south suburban business hub is home to hundreds of companies, from startups to global titans. But it’s also part of the thriving residential community of Greenwood Village, where creatives and techies rub elbows with families and neighborhood stalwarts— and the results are always interesting.

Lately, DTC is gaining traction as an outstanding destination for eating, drinking and playing, too. With the newly-minted Arapahoe Entertainment District and nearby Fiddler's Green Amphitheater—plus dozens of cafes, trendy eateries, brewpubs, neighborhood hangouts and top-notch dining venues—there are lots of reasons to make DTC your destination, too. This recently opened wine-and-cocktails spot has a Roaring ’20s aesthetic and a fun-loving, unpretentious atmosphere. It shares space (and amazing Front Range views from its patio with sister venue Pindustry—the uber-popular entertainment/restaurant complex that launched the Arapahoe Entertainment District when it arrived on the scene in 2021. The idea was sparked when Pindustry customers, after enjoying the duckpin bowling, patio games and pinball machines, “were asking for a quiet spot to have a drink,” recalls culin-ary director Chris Collins. “So [developer/founder] Bob Koontz said, ‘Let’s make you one.’”

Collins, formerly at Denver’s Wynkoop Brewery, relishes the creative synergy as he works with brand director Joel Kampfe to make exciting—but approachable—food-wine pairings. “He’s not an arrogant wine guy, and I’m not an arrogant chef," says Collins. With some 200 bottles, the wine list has something for everyone—including 50+ wines by the glass, as well as plenty of creative cocktails. And the menu of shared and small plates includes favorites like blistered shishito peppers, cedarplanked salmon, lamb merguez with peach curry, 7X Cattle Company bone marrow with shaved black truffles—and a gloriously filler-free crab cake (Kampfe suggests pairing it with a glass of Albariño).

The owners of this Colorado Golf Club home in Parker called on Angela Otten to design a traditional Tuscan home. When it came to this bathroom, that meant specifying a custom backsplash design and moldings on the cabinetry. The graceful curves she designed for these features are mimicked in the lines of the copper soaking tub. Copper sinks and faucets complete the look and create continuity between similar fixtures throughout the home. To add a little glamour, Otten selected a brushed nickel chandelier. “A dark fixture wouldn’t sparkle the way this does,” she says. “Mixing metals worked well here.”

Even a closet can be attractive as well as organized. We turned to the experts for advice on creating spaces with a perfect mix of utility and good looks.

WARDROBE CHANGE

Whether you have a spacious dressing room or a single closet, a custom-designed storage system can go a long way in keeping you and your clothing organized, says Doug Lestikow, vice president of the Denver-area Closet Factory. No matter the size of a space, it all comes down to maximizing what you have. “The number one rule is that simple is a good starting point,” he says. “We take a good inventory of what people have and how they use it, then design a system that works for them.”

CHAOS CONTROL TIP

Start with making space for hanging clothes, then incorporate shelves, cubbyholes or drawers for folded items. To find pieces easily, divide your space into sections and keep similar items together.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE

To help a busy family of four (plus a dog) stay organized, designer Jackie Newell of Basil + Tate focused on efficiency in the mudroom and laundry room. In the former, everyone has an open nook and cubbies for coats and other accoutrements. “Doors would just have been another obstacle for the mom in getting her kids to hang their stuff up,” Newell says. In the latter, Newell tucked the washer and dryer under the countertop, perfect for folding clothes. Under-counter hampers make presorting the laundry easy.

CHAOS CONTROL TIP

Incorporate both closed and open storage options, counsels Newell. “Bins and baskets are lifesavers,” she says. A sink in the laundry room is a must, too, if space allows. “It comes in handy for stain removal as well as for clean up after art projects,” Newell says.

Katie Schroeder of Atelier Interior Design turned a passageway near the kitchen into a handsome serving pantry and bar. Tall cabinets offer plenty of space for the chinaware, serving platters and other special pieces that come out for entertaining. Lower cabinets disguise drawers for easy access.

CHAOS CONTROL TIP

Glass-front cabinets can be attractive, Schroeder says, but only if what’s behind them looks good. “You don’t want to see plastic cups in with the glassware,” she cautions. “If it’s on display, it really should be a pretty set of proper glassware.”

The more cabinets, the better, for holding everything from canned goods to less-often-used dishware.

Displaying favorite pieces of art or memorabilia from travels personalizes a workspace. “Having a zone that looks good and is efficient helps you to be more productive,” says designer Katie Schroeder.

GENIUS AT WORK

This home office proves that a space can be both functional and stylish. Schroeder kept clutter to a minimum with lots of drawers, freeing up the shelves to bring in the personality. “Style your shelves rather than just cramming a bunch of stuff there,” she advises.

CHAOS CONTROL TIP

“Be honest with yourself,” Schroeder says. “Really take an assessment of what you need and build the proper spaces for those items.” In this space, that means plenty of drawers to keep paperwork out of sight.

COUNTER PRODUCTIVE

It’s time to retire the parade of small appliances and utensils that clutter most kitchen counters, says designer Eileen Saunders of Thurston Kitchen + Bath. “It’s nice to find a place for all those items so you can actually use your counters,” she says. “And it makes cleaning much easier, too.” In updating this kitchen, Saunders kept things clean and uncluttered by using drawers and specialty cabinets to keep cooking tools out of sight but close at hand.

CHAOS CONTROL TIP

Saunders suggests grouping items according to the zones in which they’ll be used. Store pots and pans near the stove, mixer and baking pans near the oven, cutting boards and knives near the prep area, dishware close to the dining area, and everything for cleanup near the sink and dishwasher. “This makes how you work in the kitchen so much more efficient,” she says.

GOALS VS. RESOLUTIONS: HOW TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE AND WHY

THE NEW YEAR IS HERE , and there’s one thing on everyone’s mind: resolutions. But what is a resolution without a plan or a goal? Are we setting ourselves up for success or simply starting the year with the intention of doing something differently?

It’s first important to think about the difference between the two. A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. A goal is the object of a person’s ambition or effort, an aim or desired result.

Resolutions often result in something we won’t and don’t want to do. Goals lead to habits and committing to do something in order to achieve a desired outcome.

Here’s what we propose: Set annual goals and determine the habits or little milestones that will result in achieving them. First and foremost, be realistic with yourself. It’s essential to think about the outcome and how you will get there. And then be specific. The more specific and detailed you are, the more likely you are to accomplish your goal.

AvidLifestyle editor, Heather Shoning, has a long history of studying goal setting and says, “Learning to have a relationship with my goals changed everything for me. I don’t set lofty goals and sit back, waiting for them to happen anymore. I review my goals and take small daily actions to attain the desired outcome.”

FIND INSPIRATION

Shoning recommends a book by Keller Williams real estate founder Gary Keller and the associated podcast, “The One Thing.” Both offer simple tools to help transform the way you think about goals and what is possible so you can achieve what matters most personally and professionally. When we say simple, we genuinely mean it—Keller suggests you narrow your concentration to—as you might guess from the title—one thing.

In addition to keeping it simple is the process of going small. In his book, Keller says: “Going small is ignoring all the things you could do and doing what you should do. It’s recognizing that not all things matter equally and finding the things that matter most. It’s a tighter way to connect what you do with what you want. It’s realizing that extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus.” The critical step people miss is breaking a goal down into small steps that, taken one by one, will lead to the eventual attainment of the goal.

SEEK HELP AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Sound easier said than done? We met with coach Paris Heinen of Always on Your Side Coaching for some guidance. Heinen agrees with the approach of choosing one goal to focus on. Doing so will create tiny habits that will lead to achieving the big goal. These habits will not only assist in achieving the goal but will also likely lead to permanent lifestyle changes to help to maintain it.

“My clients will often communicate their big goal, but then we break things way down,” Heinen says. “For example, in terms of weight loss, we’re going to break it into the things that you have to do and make each thing as small as we can, even if it’s as simple as making sure that the fridge is stocked, and the vegetables are prepped (to assist with eating habits).”

“My philosophy—and my entire coaching business, really—is that there’s no one right way for everyone, so we need to figure out how it can be easier for you,” says Heinen. “Then we explore how we can make it fit into your lifestyle. That’s my biggest goal for everyone.”

Heinen also notes that motivation and mindset are everything. While motivation is wavering, it’s best to figure out why this is lacking and explore other possible approaches. Additionally, post-it notes and positive daily affirmations go a long way. Keep these items nearby so you can revisit them daily to remind yourself of the progress and what’s to follow.

Negative habits are easy ones to perpetuate while developing a new positive habit can be challenging, so figure out why you’re doing what you’re doing—dig deeper mentally and emotionally. Think about what you would do differently in the days to come. And ultimately, always remember to be gentle with yourself during this time. Forgive yourself, but still push yourself. Create boundaries and stick to them. This focus and commitment to your goals will ensure you reach them in no time.

Making Skis From Trees

TED EYNON, OWNER OF MEIER SKIS, is wowing snowsports enthusiasts with sustainably handcrafted products

Calling itself a “Craft Skiery,” Meier Skis has focused on craftsmanship since 2009, when the company started hand-crafting sustainably made skis and snowboards in a small Glenwood Springs factory. Meier relocated to Denver in 2016, and its commitment to environmental sensitivity remains unwavering, including the use of dead American maple, poplar and beetle-kill pine sourced from Colorado forests. Doing so not only helps minimize the risk of wildfire by removing a potential fuel source, but the thinning simultaneously makes forests healthier.

Further amplifying the company’s respect for the environment, it uses a renewable, biobased Super Sap epoxy as an alternative to petrochemical resins as an adhesive. Instead of using highly toxic lacquers and inks to add graphics to the top of skis and snowboards—a standard practice for many manufacturers— Meier Skis uses a minimal amount of alternative ink that is heat-pressed into a clear topsheet.

Between this graphics-transfer process and a commitment to the reduce-reuse-recycle ethos, the company minimizes its carbon footprint. Recent initiatives have led to the elimination of 12 feet of single-use plastic for every pair of skis or snowboard shipped, and the company also launched a program to plant a tree in areas of Colorado impacted by natural disaster (think wildfires or mudslides) for every pair sold.

“We see ourselves as a disrupter in the traditional ski and snowboard space as one of the top three American brands that actually manufacture their own products, and we do so in a sustainable way,” says Michelle Kidd, Meier’s marketing director. “We were ecofriendly before it was ‘cool,’ and sustainability is still a rare conversation in the hard-goods space.”

Originally from New Hampshire, owner Ted Eynon is proud that Meier Skis, a member of the Colorado Forest Products (CFP) Program, has intentionally impacted the community— and in its own small way the planet—by giving new life to dead trees, employing an entirely Denver-based workforce and truly being 100 percent “Made In America.”

Owning your own ski and snowboard company allows the flexibility to determine the breadth of high-performance products to offer customers —and to do pretty much any graphics you (or they) wish. In addition to popular skis in their line, including Wrangler, The Leeper, Quickdraw, Eureka and Crosscut BC, Meier Skis has grown the business through unique partnerships.

“We’ve done skis for RepYourWater, Widespread Panic, Left Hand Brewing and Cabot Cheese. We like to have fun, so we’ve tied in with these co-branded opportunities doing licensing deals with Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Jazz Aspen Snowmass and Colorado School of Mines,” Eynon says.

The company’s deal with Monarch Mountain was particularly unique because skis and snowboards were crafted using dead trees harvested from forests at the resort. Customers willing to pay between $150 and $500 extra can have one-of-a-kind graphics designed and then applied to their skis or snowboard. Caveats are that customers don’t infringe on trademarks and that the design doesn’t run tip to tail so that the bare wood is always visible in some fashion.

Appreciating that giving back is good karma, Meier Skis engages with companies and organizations to support local charities, designing a custom top-sheet graphic for a pair of skis or snowboard to be raffled or auctioned off. It also offers its Craft Skiery as a venue for fundraising events.

An interesting perk for those considering the purchase of a pair of handcrafted skis or a snowboard is that guests can experience a Barstool Tour. Offered anytime the factory is open, visitors can sit at a bar built from ski core wood and peer through windows overlooking the factory floor. After pouring you a complimentary, locally brewed beer, a knowledgeable “Skitender” explains how the company crafts it custom products from Colorado trees.

“We’re doing what we can to make amazing products and give people the opportunity to pick a model that suits their skiing or snowboarding style,” Eynon explains. “Our skis are light, they’re poppy, they’re fast and they’ve got muscle. I’d put them up against any brand in the world.”

Snowbiking Bliss

THRILLS abound exploring the slopes on a SNOWBIKE

ULLR, THE GOD OF SNOW, is revered by Scandinavians. But they aren’t alone in their adoration for the mythical figure who is credited with creating snow covered trails in mountain resorts from Norway’s Lillehammer to Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Winter Park . As a snow sport enthusiast living in Colorado or just vacationing here, you may currently navigate the slopes on skis, a snowboard or cross-country skis. But there is another way to enjoy your time on the mountain: snowbiking.

SPORT INVENTED IN THE 1940S

Austrian Englebert Brenter is credited with designing the first snowbike in 1949 in his factory in Hallein, Austria. Comprised of a tubular frame, handlebars, a seat and a front and rear ski, the Brenter model resembles a bicycle, minus the wheels, chain and hand brakes.

“Snowbiking is different [from skiing and snowboarding] in that you are sitting on a bike. It only takes a few minutes to get started, and you can explore tree runs and other terrain types often on your first day. It’s a new type of adventure for everyone,” says Roger Hollenbeck, owner of Roger’s Snowbike Rentals in Breckenridge.

EASY AS RIDING A BIKE

Essentially ridden like a two-wheel bike, the Brenter Snowbike steers primarily by the rider leaning slightly left and right while simultaneously turning the handlebars. Assisting in this effort are the small skis attached to the rider’s boots, which also function as brakes.

Crafted in a similar fashion to the aforementioned brand, the Sno-Go ski bike also has a bicycle-style frame with handlebars and a ski-mounted front fork, but this design has no seat, instead having the rider place his or her boots on two rear-mounted pads attached to small skis.

Either of the two designs invite you to cruise the trails, controlling your speed and direction by keeping your feet and the snowbike’s skis on the snow, repeating the left and right gliding action as you descend, carve new tracks in the powder or cruise through the trees.

Anyone who’s ridden a bike should quickly get the hang of this new sport throughout the course of a lesson or, after watching an instructional video, experimenting first on the green or beginner slopes. As intimidating as it might seem, getting on and off the lift is rather easy.

While shuffling through the lift line may feel like walking barefoot on a tile floor covered with olive oil, you’ll quickly adjust as you prepare to hoist the bike on to the chair or have the lifty affix it to the gondola. However, boarding goes more smoothly than you anticipate, as does leaving the lift or grabbing the snowbike from the gondola.

At first, every action tends to feel foreign, and you envision roaring out of control, crashing into the unsuspecting people below. After 20 turns, your fears should be erased, and it becomes clear to you that snowbiking is easy. With every turn, you’ll gain more confidence, even finding yourself letting out numerous woo-hoos all the way to the bottom.

WON’T WANT THE ADVENTURE TO END

The more runs you take, the more your confidence is likely to increase, and it would be understandable if you considered upping your speed as you glide along. And after six or more round trips, you might even decide to graduate to slightly steeper and longer blue or intermediate level runs.

If you decided to try the sport with a group of friends that are also first-timers, don’t be surprised to find yourself snaking down the mountain chasing each other in a game of cat and mouse. Or taking turns—literally—being the first to break trail in the fresh powder.

Those with skiing or snowboarding expertise have an advantage over those without it. But newbies to the slopes needn’t worry: the learning curve isn’t steep in the least.

“What’s great about snowbiking is that people can ride together, regardless of their skills as a skier or snowboarder,” says Allen Venier, owner of Front Range Snowbikes

“Whether you’re riding as a family, school group or friends that hike in the summer together, gliding around the mountain has a new feel.”
