Personal analysis of your professional development

Week three was fairly dry and boring; most of the time I spend behind my desk all alone. I realize that I really do not like having a desk job. I find it had to stay focused and motivated to stay on task. This may be bad to say but some days I do not want to be here, and think it may be better to be taking classes this semester instead of an internship. It makes me think whether or not I am the only student thinking this way. It was exciting to plan week four because I was able to plan several on site and off site visits such as the diabetic clinic, ultrasound department, cardiac rehab and a meeting with Chris Robichaud who works for the Department of Healthy and Inclusive Communities. At the beginning of week four, I came to realize the extent of how the job competition will be regarding the appropriate experienced worker comparing the registered nurse to a health promoter. As one of the first things learning in HPRO 1195, Health Promotion is an emerging profession. Although, at the time that sounded so appealing I am just now getting a taste of what that really means. I find that much of the education that I

witnessed a registered nurse present at the diabetes clinic and at the cardiac rehab, I felt that with the appropriate overview I was just as qualified to educate the clients as the registered nurses. I quite enjoy when un-routine tasks are given to me, such as photocopying. Although monotonous and very repetitive, it gave me something to stay focused on until all photocopying was complete. I much prefer being given a task that is kinetic in nature; although I am still working alone it has a distinctive end result. I am learning more and more everyday from working in this work setting. Number one is that I like working with people rather than alone, and working in an environment which will allow me to move, walk around, and finally having several tasks to complete with distinctive ending throughout the day. Some variety is good as well. I tend to get board easily and variety helps me to stay motivated, focus and engaged. The highlight by far in this two week reporting period would have been my visit to the ultrasound department. I was able to sit in on a twin routine scan which was surprise twins. So I was present when the sonographer told them the news. It was an amazing feeling to be a part of, knowing that this was a life changing event for this family. It still gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. This validates my feeling and motivation to continue my pursuit of starting a career in ultrasound. I have seriously been considering a career in this field for 6 years and this will be my third time applying. This is also a critical step in my personal enhancement experience project. I am getting an early start but the ultrasound department said a good day to come on February 4, so I took what I could get. In regards to my special service project, during the third week I had made some great progress on establishing the draft copy of the employee health survey. In the fourth week my special service project took on low priority since the site visits were apart of my goals and objectives. I do feel that I have gained some great networking opportunities for the future, especially with Chris Robichaud. He had great news regarding the job outlook for health promotion and wellness in New Brunswick for the future. He said that wellness is a top priority for the government and will actually be receiving increased funding to support wellness initiatives. Other hopeful news was a current job opening for a wellness advisor, Chris also loosely mentioned that the qualifications to get into one of these jobs was probably less than what I have now. I think we connected on a professional level and I very much liked him. I hope to possibly work with him again in the next 10 remaining weeks of my internship. In addition to working on my special service project and personal enhancement experience project, Aidan has also got me started on the social media tasks as discussed in my goals and objectives. So far everything is going well. Although no conflicts I find I am having self-conflict. I am counting down the days until I am finished my internship, although not the worst place to be, the days are getting so long and boring, I just cannot wait to be done and finally graduate. I think it would be beneficial to speak with other health promotion students to see if they are feeling the same way. The internship is definitely not what I had expected.
