...it is so encouraging to remind ourselves...
MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Brentwood Academy Family,
Recent events capture our attention, by our nature, it seems. We all notice current circumstances, and sometimes the details of the moment seem to grow to a size that lets us see little else. Whatever the focus of the moment, whether the event in question is personal in nature such as variations in a family member’s health, or national in scope such as our presidential election, or world-wide like the shifting tides of our international economies, two powerful principles come into play, each worthy of some reflection. First, it is so encouraging to remind ourselves that circumstances do not control us. Years ago Dr. Stephen Glenn, speaking about how to build resiliency in young adults, encouraged us to offer a simple question to our children when they face challenging situations. His suggestion, instead of leaping in to rescue them or to solve the problem for them, was to ask, “Given all of that, how do you intend to respond?” This simple but rich question reinforces fundamental principles that apply to us as well as our children: we can always choose how we respond; both our character and our future options may be shaped by how we choose to respond; responses can exacerbate a problem and cause discord, or may bring healthy resolution; our response shapes us personally in ways that our circumstances do not. Attitudes of personal responsibility, capability, and a pattern of resilience (the ability to thrive under pressure) grow when we encourage thoughtful examination of our own choices rather than acting as victims or rescuers, or focusing on blaming others for their choices. Dr. Glenn called this pattern of recognizing and taking responsibility for choices, “learned hopefulness,” and the self-defeating opposite pattern of being rescued or blaming others, “learned helplessness.” Personal accountability to God, to the authorities God places in our lives, and to each other, grows out of the recognition that it is our own choices that shape us and shape the character and strength of our community. Second, we remind ourselves that we are each part of a bigger plan at work, and God is in control. Looking back over our lives, we can see so many places where even situations that looked difficult or traumatic were being woven into a pattern of spiritual and interpersonal growth as God’s redemptive work moves forward in us individually as well as in our communities. Luis Palau reminded us each morning during Spiritual Emphasis Week at Wheaton College over 30 years ago, quoting from Proverbs 21:1, “The heart of the King is in the hand of the Lord, and like rivers of water, He turns it whithersoever He will.” No less true today, our hope is in the Lord who made heaven and earth, and in the confident hope that both what we face, and how we grow in the face of those events, is part of His plan for our lives. And that plan has to do with lifting up the name of Jesus Christ, and with growing us into His image. In this light, nurturing and challenging each whole person to the glory of God takes on such eternal significance. Given all of that, how do you intend to respond?

The plans are drawn and the construction is underway on the second story addition to the Athletic Fitness Center. The fully funded project is a gift of several generous donors to the school who wanted to see the school continue to fulfill the campus master plan. The new second story of 22,000 square feet will feature: • A three mat wrestling room with bleachers for 250 spectators. The room can be converted to a full size basketball court, volleyball court, or baseball or other practice areas. • A practice gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, other sports or for school entertaining functions. Doors open onto a second story deck, which overlooks the stadium. • An aerobics room with wood floor and mirrored walls to be used for cheerleading practice, dance and other recreational activities. • Girls and boys locker rooms and restrooms • Coaches offices and a coaches conference room • Athletic storage areas Completion of the second story project targets August, 2009, in time for the beginning of school with minimum impact on the use of the 10,000 square foot weight and conditioning room on the first floor.

The week of Homecoming 2008 exploded with nonstop activities, bringing alumni, parents and friends on to the BA campus.
HOMECOMING 2008
A highlight was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen during halftime ceremonies. The senior court included members of the senior class Hannah Margaret Allen, Caitlin Glasgow and Kara Parkey. Members of the Homecoming Court were freshman Wrenne Bartlett, sophomore Lauren DiLucchio and junior Maggie Brian. Queen Hannah Margaret was crowned by 2007 Homecoming Queen Sara Norby, now a freshman at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The week’s packed schedule included the following activities: • Thursday’s Fall Market Street and Festival, sponsored by BAPA, was a constant activity. Over fifty vendors in the upper school gym offered products to many shoppers. Students enjoyed blow up games, cake walks, face painting and lots of snacks in the middle school gym. Thank you to parents Ann Rankin and Sheila Priest for chairing. The BA Dads, under the direction
of John Parks, cooked up a wonderful Spaghetti Supper in the Dining Hall and served a record 600 hungry festival goers. The evening was capped off with the traditional bonfire sponsored by the senior class. Even the rain did not stop this from being an exciting time! • The second annual Alumni Golf Outing at Kings Creek Golf Club in Spring Hill brought together over 50 golfers for golf and lunch. Chairing the event were Rob Lundy ’98, Andrew Dye ’97, Parke Brown ’89, Darrell Moore ’97 and Clay Perry ’00. • The pre-game Barbeque Supper, a joint effort of the Alumni Council and BAPA, served up Famous Dave’s BBQ to over 500 alumni, parents, students and friends
under a red and white tent on the Quad. • All BA alumni were invited and welcomed back to the campus for the Friday night football game, which pitted BA against BGA and resulted in another big win for the Eagles! The Alumni Tent at the south end of the football field was visited by many alumni and their families.
Over 50 golfers played in the second annual Alumni Homecoming Golf Outing at Kings Creek Golf Course. The winning team included Thomas Hunter ’00, Drew Staniewski ’00 and Ed Bratten ’00. Pictured above enjoying the day are Phil Husband ’89, Matt Anderson ’88, Parke Brown ’89, and Craig Menzie ’89.
• A new activity this year was the Runway BA fashion show on Saturday morning. The brunch of shrimp and grits, apple crepes, baby quiche and fruit was served to the attendees who then enjoyed watching a dozen senior girls model the latest in clothing from a variety of Green Hills boutiques. Thank you to chair Lauren Peck ’01 for heading up this

event, which is hoped will become an annual event. • Special alumni activities were planned for the Reunion Classes of ’73, ’78, ’83, ’88, ’93, ’98, and ’03 with these classes having individual parties on Saturday night. Enjoying the new Runway BA Fashion Show were the mother and daughter duos of (left) Nancy Cartwright Tirrill ’85 and daughter, Elizabeth, and Sherri Hannah Lackey ’84 and daughter, Hannah Catherine ’14.
• Upper school students enjoyed a Saturday evening Homecoming dance with

the seniors being treated to a senior dinner prior to the dance at the home of senior parents Dave and Roxane McGowan. Stir into this mix a great pep rally on Friday and some student “dress up” days during the week and you can see that Homecoming 2008 was a winner all the way ’round!

Over 150 Duncan alumni, family and friends gathered at Brentwood Academy on April 17, 2008, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school’s founding in 1908.
DUNCAN MARKS 100th ANNIVERSARY
The day featured a coffee reception in the Duncan Memorial Library followed by luncheon in the Louise Landen Grand Lobby of the Rodgers-Dale Performing Arts Center.
Hollis Johnson ’52 and Dr. Robert Johnson ’53 attended with a very special guest, Mrs. Hollis Johnson, Sr., who had three sons attend Duncan.
As part of the 100th celebration, Duncan alumni enjoyed visiting the Duncan Memorial Library. Pictured here are Gilbert Fox ’38, Fred Perryman, ’50, Woody Martin ’41 and Cecil Jones ’47.
14
Highlights of the luncheon program included: • A history of the schools, including Duncan, which were influenced by Sawney Webb, founder of The Webb School in Belle Buckle was presented by Cecil Irvin. Mr. Duncan was a Webb graduate. • The reading of an essay written by Fred Beesley, Jr. ’54. In Mr. Beesley’s absence, the essay was read by Hollis Johnson ’52 and can be read on page 16 of this magazine. The heartfelt words conveyed what so many Duncan “boys” today still feel about the teachers who shaped their lives during their Duncan years. • Because the “trapping” method of teaching was incorporated in the Duncan school day, a “demonstration” of trapping entertained the luncheon guests. Clark Woodfin ’54 played the role of teacher, and four brave alumni, gamely answered questions and moved up and down the bench!
Buddy Shaffer ’54 and Clarke Woodfin ’54 “test out” the bench from Mrs. Duncan’s Latin Class. The bench, a gift to the Duncan Memorial Library, holds a spot of honor among the growing collection of Duncan memorabilia.
Some of the questions/ assignments were: • Conjugate your favorite Latin verb in the present tense • When Madam Sharp referred to you as “senior bobo,” was this a compliment? No. • How many young ladies graduated from Duncan? Six. • What was the street address of Duncan Prep? 410 25th Avenue South, Nashville. • What was Mr. Duncan’s middle name? Theophilus. • What does the school motto, Vivat Veritas, stand for? Let truth prevail. Perhaps the highlight of the gathering was the presentation of the commemorative Duncan
Four “willing” Duncan alumni volunteered to take part in a “trapping” classroom session led by “teacher” Clarke Woodfin ’54. Holding the headmark seat on the right is Cecil Jones ’47 with Bev Landstreet ’39, Jack Miller ’49 and Coleman Boyd ’50 thinking up good answers!
medallions. Each attending Duncan graduate and relative received a medallion, which featured the portrait of Mr. Duncan on one side and a
picture of Duncan School on the other. For those unable to attend, a medallion was mailed, along with a dvd of the day’s events and a copy 15
of the Beesley essay. Thank you to Joe Price ’50 and his committee who organized this special day.
DUNCAN MARKS 100th ANNIVERSARY
My Teacher’s Wages by Fred W. Beesley, Jr. ’54
In the early 1950’s, my teachers at Duncan were intellectual and moral giants to me,
and to many others who had the advantage of their efforts. But a shock came to me some fifteen years later in the mid-1960’s, when I saw them in a really special light. I had graduated from Vanderbilt, served two years in the Army, and returned to the
family furniture business. Anne and I had outfitted our first real mortgage-bearing home in 1960. Half a decade later, after raising children on our only sofa and chairs, we
bought new furniture and put our old sofa and chairs in a back-street store where our
business sold its “trade-ins.” I don’t know what price was put on them, but the prices there were often $50 for a sofa and $25 for an upholstered easy chair.
One day, walking by our loading dock, I saw my old furniture being loaded on a truck
for delivery. Interested, I looked at the ticket to see who had bought them. I was shocked to learn that the buyer was Mr. R. H. Brock, one of my favorite teachers at Duncan. It did not seem possible that this paragon of virtue and intellect, the most
god-like presence in my boyhood, would be shopping among the cast-offs of my young family.
I mentioned my disquiet to my father who told me something I would never
forget. He said, “Fred, the builder of a great bridge, a great dam, or any great structure is
paid in three ways. First, there is money, of course. Second, a large measure of the pay is in the pride of accomplishment he sees when the building project is complete. But, third,
and probably most important, is the admiration and respect of others who have seen, used, experienced what the builder has accomplished. Nobody ever got financially rich
teaching high school students things whose value would only be seen many years later. But men like R. H. Brock can look all over this town and see the results of their efforts in the successful men who grew out of their youthful charges. And the value of Mr. Brock’s
efforts will live on in the hearts and minds of the ’old boys’ who were his students. You see, Mr. Brock and the faculty he served with were builders...they were builders of men.”
Years later, when over one hundred of Duncan’s “old boys” showed up at a
nursing home for Mr. B. H. Abernathy’s 100th birthday party, I saw tangible evidence that my teachers really were “builders of men” for whom such admiration and respect really did live on in the hearts and minds of their hundreds of “old boys.”
You...here...today...are tangible evidence of the true wealth of Mr. Duncan and his
faculty. They were “builders of men.”

On 19 August, I flew to Lubbock, TX and met up with my team then on to New Jersey for two months of training and then to Iraq for 12 months. I know it seems somewhat of a surprise, but really, in light of everything, I did not think it would ever come!

I will be going as a Civil Affairs Team leader. I will have two sergeants and a specialist under me and we will be working on civil projects south of Baghdad. Honestly, this is something I have been wanting to do ever since I walked into the Civil Affairs Command two and half years ago. My team seems to be very good. They are younger, high speed and love to work out…It will be difficult going as a woman, but I will be like water and find a way! I have been working with other team leaders who have come back to try to get a head start on things and have been working out quite a bit. [This] is something I am called to do which will be the challenge of my life. I am honestly not sure if it is to protect our country, serve the Iraqi people, just play a small part in someone else’s (like a fellow Soldier) life, or learn from someone else. I just know I am called and go with fire in my heart. So, simply, I go.
Preston Seckman ’03 graduated from Auburn with a major in professional flight management. He is now employed by Pinnacle Airlines and is based in Memphis.
I just wanted to let you know before I go. You know you have played a very significant part in my life at a very significant time. You and BA will always bring me to my knees with a heart to serve.

The Christopher Dowdle Memorial Foundation each year presents a college scholarship to the outstanding senior golfer. Award winner in 2008 was Reed Brandon. He is pictured with Headmaster Curt Masters, Doug and Anita Dowdle and Jennifer Ann Neill Clark ’97, a member of the foundation board. The foundation also makes significant contributions to the school through proceeds from the Strokes and Streams Golf Tournament, played each year at Brentwood Country Club in memory of Chris Dowdle ’97. A donation of $25,000 was given this year to support need based financial aid. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Price Lechleiter ’49 Estate of Sara E. McCullough Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. The Annual Fund 2008 – 2009 Our Purpose for Giving…Advancing the Mission The Annual Fund supports three key areas of Brentwood Academy: • Spiritual Life speakers, study material, retreats. One gift of $34 funds one student to attend a school retreat. • Need based Financial Aid. 140 students, 18% of the student body, are receiving some aid to help with tuition. • Faculty Continuing Education. Last year 38 faculty members benefited by taking classes and attending seminars. This year’s goal: $450,000 To date, 270 people/families have pledged with 100% participation from the current Trustee Board 100% participation from the Administrative Team Every gift is important and can make an impact. Needed are donors to increase the overall participation. As the number of donors rises, the dollars needed to fund the school will be realized. 586 people/families supported last year’s Annual Fund and raised $382,000. Gifts are tax-deductible and a response card envelope is available in the center of this magazine or you can give on line at www.brentwoodacademy.com and then click Giving to BA. Thank you for giving to this #1 fund raising project at Brentwood Academy!
