[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season. Our programming for each concert highlights music from specific countries and regions, affording us the opportunity to take a musical trip around the world. We’ll enjoy picturesque music from America, passionate music from Russia, a delightful program of intimate repertoire from France, a colorful and fiery program of music from Spain and great masterworks from Germany and Austria. Our annual POPS Concert features favorite selections from Hollywood’s Golden Age as well as recent blockbusters. Our roster of guest artists includes audience favorites such as pianist Terrence Wilson and acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira along with artists making their BSO debut including cellist Cicely Parnas and international guitar sensation Pablo Villegas. Across the season, we’ll hear beloved favorites from history’s greatest composers: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Bizet, Ravel, Debussy and many more. And because there’s more to the BSO than Bach and Beethoven, we’re excited to share a VERY special event we’ve added to our season at the beginning of June as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of perhaps the greatest album ever – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in a special collaboration with Classic Albums Live and the King Center!

[ FROM THE ] BOARD CHAIR “The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us – fostering creativity, goodness and beauty. They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.” ~ Randy Cohen, ARTSBlog, April 2011 I have long been a true believer in the beauty of music, particularly symphonic music. For me, a symphonic piece is a personal journey into the life and emotions of the composer. With each note, my mind’s eye paints a picture – my vision of what the composer wanted us to “see” and hear. Our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, has again shown inspiration in the programming for our 2016-17 concert series. And, I continue to be amazed at the talent of our musicians. When they step on that stage, you are witness to their hard work and dedication. I invite you to join us on this musical journey, to enjoy the beauty and richness of the music. Bring a friend. [ MULTIMEDIA ARTIST ] NICHOLAS BARDONNAY Nicholas Bardonnay is a photographer, multimedia artist, and the Creative Director & CEO of Westwater Arts. Since 2009, Nicholas has worked on more than 70 concerts with orchestras in Dallas, Cincinnati, Tucson, Boulder, Omaha, Glasgow, Liverpool, Singapore, Toronto and other diverse communities. He has photographed, produced and performed over a dozen photochoreography pieces. His first concert piece, Pacifica, blends his photography from the atmospheric coastal Pacific Northwest with six music options by Mahler, Debussy, Górecki, Sibelius, Liadov and Satie. With Copland’s music in mind for his next piece, Rodeo!, he photographed a lively pickup rodeo under the vast skies of northern Arizona. More recently, he used archival images to produce two companion pieces, No Man’s Land and Citizen Soldier, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II. He choreographed them to poignant music options by Copland, Vaughan Williams, Barber and Shostakovich, and both pieces premiered in 2014. For another project, Nicholas spent two months camping across Iceland while photographing its sublime landscapes for Sagaland, which he set to four music options by Vaughan Williams, Sibelius, Pärt and Hovhaness. Sagaland premiered in 2016. IV
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1 - American Landscapes
Nicholas has also produced a number of commissioned concert pieces. Highlights include Grand Canyon Country, a piece created for the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and The Phoenix Symphony to celebrate Arizona’s state centennial; a 50th anniversary tribute for the Britt Music Festival in Oregon; and extensive photography across the Czech Republic for Czech Journeys, which is set to the complete Má vlast and was commissioned by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The London Photographic Association as well as galleries in Los Angeles, Portland, Hong Kong and other cities have exhibited Nicholas’s photography. He has lived in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and he has an interdisciplinary degree in Visual Arts and Social Sciences from The Evergreen State College. Nicholas and his wife and colleague Erin are based in California. In 2014, they spent a year traveling across central and southern Mexico while Nicholas photographed for an upcoming production, titled Mágico. His most recent project is National Park Suite. The new concert piece commemorates the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service and premieres this summer at Wolf Trap with the National Symphony Orchestra. CREATIVE PROCESS Nicholas is both a photographer and a multimedia artist. He creates new visual concertos by starting with either a concept or a work of classical music, then pairing one with the other. Most often, he researches and travels to distinctive places in order to photograph a new body of work for a concert piece; for historical pieces, he gathers the best available photography from many digital archives. Then he uses his favorite recording of the music, along with various software, to edit and choreograph a finished piece. Often Nicholas will create several variations of a piece that are set to different works of music. This synthesis comes alive through his collaborations with orchestras worldwide. During concerts, Nicholas uses multiple digital projectors to fill a 440-square-foot panoramic screen flown above the orchestra. He closely follows the conductor’s performance, livecuing hundreds of image transitions from memory.

[ NOTES ] Aaron Copland (1900-1990) An Outdoor Overture As much as any composer, Aaron Copland has defined our native sound in so-called “serious” music. With various styles ranging from populist to jazzy to austere to folkish to midtwentieth- century modern, his music almost always seems to be tagged with a “made in America” label. Spare in harmony, sensitively colored, and often constructed with intervals suggestive of wide-open spaces, this Brooklyn born “cowboy” wrote music that simply oozes Americana. It is difficult to pin down just why this is, but somehow when we listen to his music we feel that he speaks as one of us and for us. Copland set out to write uniquely American music, and it is safe to say that he succeeded.
PROGRAM NOTES PROVIDED BY: David R. Glerum, Music Director WMFE-FM/NPR, Orlando, FL. (1990-2009) Music Director WXXI-FM/NPR, Rochester, N.Y. (1980-1990) VI
Intending to win over a wide cross-section of the public, Copland gave us El Salon Mexico (1936), Billy the Kid (1938), Lincoln Portrait (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944). An Outdoor Overture was written in the same populist vein and year (1936) as Billy the Kid, at the urging of Alexander Richter. Richter was the music director of the orchestra of the High School of Music and Art in New York City. He invited Copland to write a new piece in a long-term campaign intended to introduce uplifting contemporary American music to young performers. To that end, Richter suggested that the work be “optimistic in tone, which would have a definite appeal to the adolescent youth of this country.” Copland enthusiastically responded with An Outdoor Overture, so titled for its open-air and scenic qualities. Copland’s contemporary, composer Elliott Carter, expressed his admiration for the work writing that it contains some of Copland’s “finest and most personal music.” Its opening is as lofty and beautiful as any passage that has been written by a contemporary composer.”
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1 - American Landscapes
Mark O’Connor (b. August 5, 1961) Appalachia Waltz Mark O’Connor is a man of many hats – both literally and figuratively – celebrated as an American bluegrass, country and classical fiddler, composer, and music educator. His music is wide-ranging and diverse, reflective of an upbringing that exposed him to a variety of musical genres. A child prodigy, O’Connor’s first instrument was the guitar, which he took up at the age of six. By age eleven, he became enamored of bluegrass and country guitar, particularly inspired by some of the great guitarists of the era; including, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Doc Watson, and top bluegrass players like Tony Rice and Norman Blake. His first contest win was at the age of ten at a classical/ flamenco guitar competition, held at the University of Washington. Not long after, O’Connor took up studies with the legendary Texas fiddler, Benny Thomasson, a musical giant known as an innovator who created the modern era of American fiddling in the 1940’s. Before high school was through, he won every major fiddle competition in the country. O’Connor opened another musical door by touring in his late teens with legendary jazz violinist, Stéphane Grapelli, considered one of the supreme improvisers in the history of the violin. After graduation, O’Connor toured the festival circuit and distinguished himself as a studio musician. The Country Music Association named him Musician of the Year six years in a row (from 19911996). He also won two Grammy awards – one for his New Nashville Cats album and another for his Appalachian Journey album collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. His journeys into the classical realm have been artistically and commercially successful. The Fiddle Concerto has received over 200 performances giving it the distinction of being one of the most performed concertos of the last half-century. O’Connor composed Appalachia Waltz in 1993, during an experience when “a window of optimism washed over me one day in my studio.” It reflects his affinity and fascination for Scandinavian and especially Appalachian folk fiddling. Originally written for unaccompanied violin, it has since been cast for various combinations of instruments, including a setting for violin, cello and double bass. It was the title track from a 1996 recording featuring O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release proved immensely popular, debuting and then remaining at the No. 1 position on Billboard Magazine’s Classical music chart.
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, From the New World – Largo (2nd mvt.) Composed in America by a proud Czech musician, the odds against the creation of From the New World must have seemed slim. After all, Antonin was the eldest son of a butcher from a village north of Prague and had risen to a professorship in Prague with no interest in leaving. But one Jeannette M. Thurber, whose husband had amassed millions in the wholesale grocery business, had a way with persuasion. Unsuccessful with a National Opera Company, set up in 1884 as competition for the new Metropolitan Opera, she regrouped and threw her resources into the founding of a National Conservatory of Music. Having taken advice from musicians at home and abroad, in April of 1891 she set her sights on Dvorak.

VII
That she engaged him as director of a relatively new school on a faraway continent is testimony to Mrs. Thurber’s determination and persistence and to the generosity and imaginative terms of the agreement she crafted with the Czech master. It didn’t hurt either that Dvorak didn’t mind being lionized. Moreover, he enjoyed the trains, the ocean liners, and the pigeons all around New York City! The Symphony No. 9 – one of the most beloved symphonies ever written – would probably never have happened without the effort and vision of Mrs. Jeannette M. Thurber. As a composer whose musical language was by nature saturated with the songs and dances of his own native land, Dvorak was enthusiastic in his encouragement of American composers to find inspiration in their national music. He showed the way in utterly convincing fashion with From the New World, a new symphony written in New York City in 1893. His advice to future American composers was straightforward. In an interview with the New York Herald he was quoted as saying: “I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. When first I came here, I was impressed with the idea, and it has developed into a settled conviction. These beautiful and varied themes are a product of the soil. They are American. They are the folk songs of America, and your composers must turn to them. Only in this way can a musician express the true sentiment of a people…. In the Negro melodies of America {which Dvorak often closely lumped together with Native American music} I discovered all that is needed for a great and noble school of music. They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay, gracious, or what you will…. There is nothing in the whole range of composition that cannot find a thematic source here.” African-American influences are never far away. The Largo movement (the 2nd mvt.) is notable for its English horn theme of exceptional beauty. It resembles a spiritual in character. Interestingly, when William Fischer later set words to the melody, many mistakenly assumed that Dvorak modeled the movement on a spiritual named “Goin’ Home.” As in Copland who was to come later, From the New World has in its heart qualities often associated with America: ruggedness, openness, brassiness, and confidence. An interesting achievement overall: a work written in America by a Bohemian composer that has become known as one of the world’s favorite symphonies. The Brevard Symphony Orchestra is proud to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the National Parks Service. Unique to this concert, we’ll be treated to the stunning visual choreography of multimedia artist, Nicholas Bardonnay (Westwater Arts): First, in projected imagery to accompany the Dvorak Largo, and later in photochoreography to Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo. Bardonnay’s most recent project is National Park Suite. This concert piece celebrates the legacy of the National Park Service and premiered this summer at Wolf Trap with the National Symphony Orchestra. The artist provides the following description (from www.westwaterarts.com): Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Smoky Mountains are just a few of 30+ national parks and monuments showcasing America’s best, brightest, and most majestic natural treasures in this concert piece. Embodying the American spirit and our love for wideopen spaces, National Park Suite celebrates the proud legacy of the National Park Service through a breathtaking compilation of places that have inspired generations of Americans and countless international visitors. SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1 - American Landscapes
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) Fanfare for the Common Man With the possible exception of the variations on a Shaker tune from the ballet Appalachian Spring, the Fanfare for the Common Man has become Copland’s most popular and recognizable work. Leonard Bernstein even went so far as to call it “the world’s leading hit tune.” This is in thanks in large part to the American entertainment media, with the fanfare making frequent appearances on television, in the movies, and in projects involving a diverse lot of musicians. Even if you are not familiar with the fanfare in its original classical form, you have probably heard it as used by TV and film producers. It has been incorporated into shows having to do with sports, space travel – some may remember it as the introduction to the “Omnibus” TV series in the 1950s – and other heroic topics. Politicians and radio pundits borrowed it in order to advance their own agendas. Relating to its strong rhythms and modal harmonies, jazz and rock bands have gravitated to it as well. For example, the Rolling Stones adopted its opening theme as their entrance music while on tour. Woody Herman’s New Thundering Herd used a phrase, as arranged by tenor saxophonist Gary Anderson, for a jazz improvisation in “boogaloo” style (“What’s that?” asked Copland). And in 1977 the group Emerson, Lake, and Palmer brought it into the rock realm through Keith Emerson’s arrangement for synthesizer (Emerson), guitar (Greg Lake), and drums (Carl Palmer). Of course the biggest reason for the immense popularity of Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is to be found in the music itself. Its appeal is immediate and the music makes a direct and dramatic impact. The sound is accessible, broad and spacious, and causes the listener to sit up and take notice. Moreover, the Fanfare’s patriotic tone inspires in its invocation of the pioneering spirit of our country.
Ferde Grofé (1892-1972) Sunset from Grand Canyon Suite Although 2217 miles and a 34-hour drive away from Melbourne, we can still experience the beauty and majesty of the Grand Canyon right here at the King Center with Maestro Confessore as our tour guide and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra as our vehicle. Although we are surrounded here by the ocean and lush sub-tropical vegetation, Grofé’s richly evocative score can take us across the country to the powerful and inspiring desert landscape that is the Grand Canyon. Ferde Grofé was one of America’s most talented and popular composers and arrangers during the first half of the twentieth century. He found his niche as a superb musical landscape painter. Classically trained, early on in his career Grofé was in the viola sections of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Concurrently, he gained a reputation as an immensely gifted jazz musician with his own popular jazz band and through his improvisations and arrangements. In 1920 he was hired into Paul Whiteman’s band as pianist and arranger, flourishing for the better part of a decade with arrangements like Whispering – a hit that sold over a million copies. But the most notable arrangement was that of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The composition was so successful that Grofé was encouraged to try his hand at his own large-scale concert works in a vernacular idiom. These classical/popular creations often took as subjects our varied American topography, culture and history. Along with the Grand Canyon Suite of 1931, this series of musical landscapes came to include Mississippi: A Journey in Tones, Hudson River, Yellowstone, SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Death Valley, Niagara Falls, World’s Fair (in honor of the 1964 World’s Fair in New York), etc. Grofé demonstrated through these works that he could write brilliantly atmospheric and descriptive music, most impressive for its spectacular orchestration. Of the Grand Canyon Suite, Grofé wrote: “I have spoken of America in this music simply because America spoke to me, just as it has spoken to you and to every one of us.” He continues, “If I have succeeded in capturing some part of the American musical spirit, I am grateful that I was trained to do so. But this music is your music, and mine only in the highly technical sense that a copyright has been filed away with my name on it. Always we must realize that there is much more to hear. Our land is rich in music, and if you listen you can hear it right now. This is our music you hear, surging forth, singing up to every one of us.” The following comments on Sunset from the Grand Canyon Suite were provided as a preface to the published score: Sunset: “Now the shades of night sweep over the golden hues of day. As evening envelops the desert in a cloak of darkness, there is a suggestion of animal calls coming from the distant rim of the canyon. “A wild, animal-like call, played by the horns, opens this movement. This is followed by the main them, which is introduced by bells and violins. In the development, the theme is repeated by oboes and violins, then by woodwinds and violins, again by cellos and horns, horns and flutes. Finally the horns again play the calls heard in the opening bars, and the movement ends as the tones fade into the distance.”
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) Four Dances Episodes from the Ballet, Rodeo In the spring of 1942, Copland achieved great success with Billy the Kid. This prompted the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo to commission the composer that same year to write a second ballet on a cowboy theme. Agnes de Mille was snared to write the scenario and to handle the choreography. The ballet was an instant success and Rodeo has remained among Copland’s most popular scores. Agnes de Mille herself paints the scenario and setting: “Throughout the American Southwest, the Saturday afternoon rodeo is a tradition. On the remote ranches, as well as in the trading centers and the towns, the ‘hands’ get together to show off their skills… The theme of the ballet [Rodeo] is basic. It deals with the problem confronting pioneer women: how to get a suitable man.” A popular concert suite was soon devised, entitled Four Dance Episodes. The sections are: Buckaroo Holiday; Corral Nocturne; Saturday Night Waltz; and Hoe-Down. Rodeo’s scenario is set against Burnt Ranch, where the ballet’s chief protagonist – the Cowgirl – vies with the more ‘feminine’ city girls for the eye and favor of the resident cowboys. In particular, she fancies the Head Wrangler, who has his sights set on the cultivated and pretty Head Wrancher’s daughter. The suite begins with Buckaroo Holiday, a dazzling Allegro that opens with a grand and robust fanfare. Soon, the woodwinds announce the gentle and lilting Cowgirl’s theme, as she attempts to impress the Head Wrangler with her rodeo skills. The cowboys enter to a rhythmically charged motif evoking the trotting of wild horses, sounded in the percussion and brass. De Mille conceived this entrance as an event “like thunder.”

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1 - American Landscapes
The most pensive and tranquil of the Four Episodes, the Corral Nocturne expresses the loneliness and lovesick despair of the Cowgirl. De Mille described her emptiness in stark terms: “She run[s] through the empty corrals intoxicated with space, her feet thudding in the stillness.” Saturday Night Waltz opens with what sounds like a group of string instruments being tuned, cast in a waltz setting with references to “Goodbye, Old Paint.” The concluding Hoe-Down, based on the square dance tunes “Bonyparte” and “McLeod’s Reel,” is a kick-your-feet-up-in-the-air revel of rhythmic verve and orchestral virtuosity. Once again, we’ll enjoy Nicolas Bardonnay’s (Westwater Arts) captivating photochoreography: this time set to Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo. In this concert piece, Bardonnay photographed a lively pickup rodeo under the vast skies of northern Arizona. Description: “Dust off your boots and ten-gallon hat, find a good spot in the bleachers and get up close to one of the most exciting shows in town. Experience an action-packed rodeo from behind the scenes, as only the contestants get to see it. Jump into the chutes, learn roping with some feisty ranch kids, get airborne with a wild bronco rider and finish up at a country dance. An authentic, proud and at times humorous portrait of life in the contemporary West, Rodeo! is a rip-roarin’ good time that audiences young and old, cowgirl and city boy alike, will enjoy.”
