From Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, along with Mozart’s 41st Symphony and the First Symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Schumann, this is as strong a lineup as we’ve ever presented. I am very excited to work with our outstanding musicians to bring these amazing masterworks to you! Phenomenal guest artists will be sharing the stage with your BSO throughout the season. We have an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists for Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira joins us for Barber’s Violin Concerto in November. Our Concertmaster, Lisa Ferrigno, plays Bach in January and pianist Rich Ridenour shares favorite piano pieces at our February Pops Concert. In March, we’ll present violinist Paul Huang performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy - and in April, pianist Tanya Bannister performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. And don’t miss a very Special Event we’ve added to our season at the end of April – an evening with Broadway Star Hugh Panaro – Broadway’s longest-running Phantom! Your Brevard Symphony Orchestra offers much more to our community than our Subscription Series Concerts. Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. BSO Board Chair’s Message
A
s BSO board chair, my travels this past year revealed that the arts are alive and well in our Florida communities.
“Though the music we all revere and love remains constant, audiences often change the dynamic of the way we present our product.”
The BSO Board of Directors is very aware that we serve a broad range of interest and appreciation and we strive to provide musical experiences that rise to those levels. As much as possible audience suggestions and input are incorporated in program planning - and we are usually one to two years ahead in determining themes and musical selections for your listening pleasure. I am so proud of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, for his forward thinking and musical vision. His willingness to grow and expend in his musical life translates into fantastic programs for our community. The orchestra members have continued to follow in the vision and excellence of the conductor. The skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. All of us must strive to broaden the audience base and encourage volunteers to support the symphony and its programs. It is an ongoing effort, and I look forward to more members of the community joining our musical family.

ollaborating and partnering with others makes us stronger. At the BSO we work with many others throughout the season who bring us resources we just couldn’t afford on our own. The King Center for the Performing Arts, where we are privileged to be the Orchestra in Residence, is a very important partner in presenting our concerts and events. From the Administrative Staff to the Box Office to the Technical Staff, they help ensure that you have a great experience. Once again they hosted our Cultural Arts Showcase this year so that all the arts organizations in Brevard had a chance to shine.
Our Guilds are vital partners who raise much needed funds and keep the BSO in the spotlight. They present fun and successful events and provide essential volunteer hours for many jobs that are critical to our success. Volunteers in the community serve on our Board of Directors who guarantee that the BSO is run efficiently and within our mission to provide quality entertainment, outreach opportunities and educational programs. Our generous sponsors, local foundations, and donors make sure we have sufficient funding to present these concerts and all the programs that make our community a better place to live. In-Kind sponsors save us thousands of dollars every year – special recognition goes to Courtyard Marriott in Cocoa Beach; Berman, Hopkins, Wright and LaHam, CPAs; Detect Alert; Slug-a-Bug; Eau Gallie Florist and our many media sponsors. We are pleased to partner with other groups – the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Brevard Community Chorus, and the Eau Gallie Arts District, just to name a few. However, our most important partner is you – our loyal audience. You are the reason for these beautiful concerts. Maestro Chris Confessore and our very talented musicians love to perform and it’s all for you! Thank you for being our partner.

Program Notes
The Hebrides, op. 26 (Fingal’s Cave) Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
“Bach reborn.” – Franz Liszt “The Mozart of the nineteenth century.” - Robert Schumann “A romantic who felt at ease within the mould of classicism.” – Pablo Casals Although the above accolades may seem like hyperboles, they in fact are not. Phenomenal as Bach, precocious as Mozart, and blessed with passion and grace, all three assessments accurately point to the immense genius of Mendelssohn. Even in his own lifetime, he was considered smiled upon by the gods: Goethe called him a “heavenly, precious boy” and Heine proclaimed him a “musical miracle.” Compared to all composer prodigies, it is difficult not to pronounce Mendelssohn as the most astonishing. Of course, Mozart comes immediately to everyone’s mind and it is true that over the course of his life he did achieve more and reach higher. But in terms of youthful genius, not even Mozart surpassed or even equaled Mendelssohn in assurance or individuality. Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg in 1809, son of the wealthy banker Abraham and grandson of the great Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His mother was a woman of exceptional culture and refinement who offered continual encouragement. In 1812 the family moved to Berlin after the SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Program Notes Continued... French occupation of Hamburg and it was there that Mendelssohn received what amounted to a utopian education. Parental wealth and care enabled the Mendelssohn children to benefit from the finest teaching available. The tutoring extended well beyond music to include linguistics, literature, painting, and philosophy. He traveled widely throughout Europe with his family, mastered numerous languages, and dashed off exquisite drawings that he used to decorate correspondence and journals. There is no question that Mendelssohn enjoyed a charmed childhood and from day one a silver spoon was placed in his mouth. The Mendelssohn family saw to it that their anointed son would be afforded every opportunity to display his blossoming musical abilities. Twice monthly, the Mendelssohn mansion was turned into a concert hall able to seat hundreds of people in an auditorium-like setting. Matinee performances were begun in 1822, when Mendelssohn was thirteen, so that the cultural elite of Berlin could smell the blossoms of Felix’s latest creations. Word spread, praise was lavished upon the boy, and Felix had the time of his life. By 1825, Mendelssohn amassed somewhere around one hundred compositions, ranging from operas and operettas to string quartets to concertos to motets to piano trios. He had also begun the series of thirteen string symphonies that stand up among the finest pieces of this torrent of genius-tinged juvenilia. Shortly after turning twenty, he embarked on a walking tour of Scotland with his friend, the poet Carl Klingemann. The experiences of the trip bowled Mendelssohn over and made indelible and lasting impressions. On Staffa, a tiny island in the Hebrides, about ten miles off the coast, Mendelssohn and his friend visited a leading tourist attraction, Fingal’s Cave. The composer was awestruck at the sight: before his eyes was a sea-filled grotto, about 35 feet wide, twice as high, and over 200 feet deep, lined on one side with impressive red and brown pillars of basalt that resembled the interior of an immense pipe organ. Later that day, on August 6, 1829, Mendelssohn wrote to his sister Fanny: “In order to make you understand how extraordinarily the Hebrides affected me, I send you the following, which came into my head there.” Enclosed in his letter were the opening bars of what we now know as The Hebrides, or Fingal’s Cave. (The reason why the titles are often confused has to do with the title dates from the first published edition, which was marked Fingal’s Cave on the score and The Hebrides on the orchestral parts.)
VI SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Rather than as an introduction to a larger work, Mendelssohn conceived The Hebrides as a concert overture complete unto itself. In form it consists of two contrasting themes – the descending figure heard at the beginning suggests rolling waves, and the lyrical ascending melody introduced later by the cellos and bassoons evokes the site’s soaring, primitive beauty. In essence, the work is best thought of as a brilliant seascape, with surging tides, dashing waves, seagulls, salt spray and foam, and with hints of a passing storm.
Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
I. Allegro moderato II. Adagio di molto III. Allegro, ma non tanto Jean Sibelius is the most widely acclaimed artist to have ever emerged from Finland. He is admired in America, England, Scandinavia and throughout the world as one of the great composers of the 20th century. Sibelius benefited from a head start owing to the excellent classical education he received as a result of his family’s comfortable financial circumstances (his father was a prosperous family surgeon). The boy from early on was grounded in piano studies and then at the age of only fourteen started lessons on the violin. Mastering the instrument became a mission, with the young musician writing,

VII
“The violin took me by storm and for the next ten years [from 1879-1889] it my dearest wish, my greatest ambition to become a great virtuoso.” Provided with a government grant, Sibelius spent a year in Berlin and then a year in Vienna where he studied both violin and composition. As late as 1891, the 25-year old auditioned and was turned down for a spot in the Vienna Philharmonic. But the time spent in Vienna yielded something of even greater value: Sibelius became intensely aware of his own “Finnishness” and of an inner imperative to write uniquely Finnish music. When he returned to his homeland in 1892, he took a position at the Institute and allied himself with the “Young Finns,” a group of intellectuals and artists who united to free Finland of Russia’s domination. As the preeminent composer of the nationalistic movement, Sibelius was called upon to write considerable music for concerts and theatrical presentations in celebration of Finnish identity. Meanwhile, the Finnish people understandably came to regard Sibelius as a national hero and the government decided to reward him by electing him to the post of Professor of Music at the University of Helsinki. For political reasons the offer was withdrawn, but as compensation he was granted an annual salary with no stipulated responsibilities. This freed Sibelius up from all other concerns and financial responsibilities and allowed him to concentrate solely on composition. Begun in 1903, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto received its first performance on February 8, 1904, in Helsinki. Dissatisfied, he significantly reworked the piece and its second premiere was given in Berlin with Richard Strauss as conductor and Czech violinist Karel Halir as soloist. Although the first movement, Allegro moderato, is bleak in mood, it is nonetheless one of the most sublimely beautiful openings in all the repertory. Over the hushed murmuring of the muted strings, the violin sings the broad and haunting principal theme in gentle dissonance and against the beat. A Berlin reviewer observed, “Nordic winter landscape painters who through the distinctive interplay of white on white secure rare, sometimes hypnotic and sometimes powerful, effects.” The ensuing Adagio di molto is equally ardent, with the violinist extending a long, lyrical theme followed by soloist and orchestra working up to a dramatic and exciting climax, and then back to the opening theme and melancholy mood of the opening. The final movement, Allegro ma non troppo, is a dazzling technical tour de force for the soloist, with vibrant rhythmic energy from the orchestra. Music critic, Donald Tovey, irresistibly characterized it as a “polonaise for polar bears”!

Finale: Andante lugubre—Allegro maestoso “Despite all its glaring deficiencies I have a soft spot for it, for it is a sin of my sweet youth.” –Tchaikovsky Composed in 1866, the Symphony No. 1, Winter Dreams, was not only Tchaikovsky’s first venture in the genre, but it proved to be of some historical significance, counting as the first major and viable symphony written by a Russian composer. The only other candidates include Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin, whose efforts by comparison seem less impressive. Although not performed in its entirety until February 15, 1868 – by the Russian Musical Society in Moscow, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein – the First was enthusiastically received. A justifiably proud composer was able to report to his brother Anatoly, “My Symphony scored a great success, particularly the Adagio.” Although the premiere turned out to have a happy ending, the story of the symphony’s creation is fraught with anxiety, frustration, and despair. It was begun in Tchaikovsky’s mid-twenties, even as he was finishing his studies at SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

the St. Petersburg Conservatory under the close and critical supervision of its founder/director, Anton Rubinstein. Thereafter, Anton’s brother, Nikolai, recruited him to teach at the newly established Moscow Conservatory. Unable to afford his own place, he lived as a guest in Nikolai’s apartment, where he continued to work on his first symphony. These arrangements were far from ideal, however, with the composer complaining of the cramped and suffocating surroundings. He wrote, “It seems to me that I am here by mistake… I occupy a small room next to his [Nikolai’s] bedroom, and to be honest, when we go to bed at the same time… I feel a bit awkward. I am afraid to disturb his sleep with my squeaky pen.” Apparently, the walls were paper thin, as was his fragile and permeable self-confidence. Somehow, he pushed forward despite heading for a nervous breakdown. He reported of “hammering” in his head, and admitted, “the thought pursues me constantly that I shall soon die and shall not even have time to complete my symphony successfully.” In the summer of 1866, Tchaikovsky fled Moscow to the estate of relatives outside of St. Petersburg, hoping for a calmer and spacious setting in which to compose. Once again, his neurotic disposition and growing insomnia got the best of him, finally reaching a state of crisis. His brother Modest painted the picture: “At the end of July, all this broke out in attacks of a terrible nervous disorder such as was never again repeated in his life The doctor… summoned to treat him found that he was ‘one step away from madness’ and during the first days considered his condition to be almost desperate. The main and most dreadful symptoms of this disease were that the patient was tormented by hallucinations, overcome by a terrifying fear of something, and that all his extremities were completely numb.” Considering these profoundly horrific afflictions, it is testament to Tchaikovsky’s inner strength and perseverance that he managed to complete his First Symphony, dedicating it to his friend and benefactor, Nikolai Rubinstein. Perhaps because of its painful labor, he retained great affection for this first major step in his career, writing to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck in 1883: “Although it is in many ways very immature, yet fundamentally it has more substance and is better than any of my other more mature works.” Contrary to Tchaikovsky’s Little Russian or Polish Symphonies (Nos. 2 and 3), whose subtitles were conferred by critics, the Symphony No. 1 was named Winter Dreams by the composer. Additionally, in the score, he gave titles to two of the symphony’s four movements, dubbing the first, “Dreams of a X

Program Notes Continued... Winter Journey,” and the second, “Land of Desolation, Land of Mists.” None of these titles should be taken literally and so interpreted in any sort of literal programmatic way; rather, they are merely mood setters meant to provide atmosphere. In the case of the opening movement, the inspiration may have come from one of patroness von Meck’s paintings, which Tchaikovsky remarked could be “an illustration of the first movement.” It is at least plausible in the sense of the atmospheric opening theme providing a fine metaphor of “winter dreams.” The opening theme depicts the “coziness” of winter: invigorating, still, and beautiful. The infectious and memorable main melody stated at the outset in octaves by the solo flute and bassoon over trembling strings, serves as the focus of the movement, before giving over to the expressive second subject on solo clarinet. Framed by austere, hymn-like passages for strings alone, the second movement – “Land of Desolation, Land of Mists” – contains an especially lovely main theme, announced by a soulful oboe over muted strings, and then building to a deeply expressive climax with full orchestra. Notwithstanding the composer’s own subtitle, the music sounds not so much “desolate” or bleak, but rather deliciously melancholic. The ensuing Scherzo is decidedly more upbeat than the first two movements, proceeding in a lively and rustic manner. The internal trio is especially buoyant and gives us Tchaikovsky’s first major orchestral waltz. It presages the composer’s later ballet masterpieces, including Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. In the finale – marked “Andante lugubre—Allegro maestoso – Tchaikovsky opens and almost closes with the Symphony’s darkest and most ominous moments. It seems to recall the despair and suffering that the composer endured during its creation. The introduction is based on a Russian folk song, which provides the material for the main themes of the central “Allegro.” The orchestration is brilliantly realized for such a young composer (in his mid-twenties) and looks forward to the symphonic masterpieces of his maturity. This section contains the work’s most joyous and vibrant music. When the music of the “lugubrious” Andante returns near the end, it casts off its gloom and ushers in a fast coda that concludes the symphony in a blaze of grandeur and triumph.

Experience a Divine Culture “I am completely enchanted." —HRH Princess Michael of Kent
THERE WAS A TIME when Emperors ruled dynasties, heroes became legends, and the world was full of magic and miracles. What if you could travel across centuries, visit imperial palaces, and discover realms hidden to the human eye? And what do 5,000 years of civilization sound like? Shen Yun’s live orchestra has found the answer. Shen Yun’s unique approach blends the singular beauty and expressiveness of Chinese instruments with the grandeur of a Western orchestra. The result is a gorgeous and vivid sound with great emotional range—perfect for bringing to life the soul of an ancient civilization. It takes musical storytelling to a new level.
“I come away with feeling like a better human being for having experienced this magnificent event.” —Omega Medina, opera singer & former senior manager of classical music for the Grammy Awards
“I have reviewed over 3,000 shows, none can compare to what I saw tonight.” –Richard Connema, renowned Broadway critic
