AN EPIC SEASON Music Director’s Message
W
elcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2015-16 Season. We have an incredible collection of great repertoire scheduled on our Subscription Series Concerts this season. From Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, along with Mozart’s 41st Symphony and the First Symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Schumann, this is as strong a lineup as we’ve ever presented. I am very excited to work with our outstanding musicians to bring these amazing masterworks to you! Phenomenal guest artists will be sharing the stage with your BSO throughout the season. We have an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists for Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira joins us for Barber’s Violin Concerto in November. Our Concertmaster, Lisa Ferrigno, plays Bach in January and pianist Rich Ridenour shares favorite piano pieces at our February Pops Concert. In March, we’ll present violinist Paul Huang performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy - and in April, pianist Tanya Bannister performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. And don’t miss a very Special Event we’ve added to our season at the end of April – an evening with Broadway Star Hugh Panaro – Broadway’s longest-running Phantom! Your Brevard Symphony Orchestra offers much more to our community than our Subscription Series Concerts. Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event that draws thousands of audience members of all ages. And my favorite event of the season, our Annual Fifth Grade Concerts, introduces the thrill of live symphonic music to every fifth grader in Brevard County.

A
s BSO board chair, my travels this past year revealed that the arts are alive and well in our Florida communities.
“Though the music we all revere and love remains constant, audiences often change the dynamic of the way we present our product.”
The BSO Board of Directors is very aware that we serve a broad range of interest and appreciation and we strive to provide musical experiences that rise to those levels. As much as possible audience suggestions and input are incorporated in program planning - and we are usually one to two years ahead in determining themes and musical selections for your listening pleasure. I am so proud of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, for his forward thinking and musical vision. His willingness to grow and expend in his musical life translates into fantastic programs for our community. The orchestra members have continued to follow in the vision and excellence of the conductor. The skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. All of us must strive to broaden the audience base and encourage volunteers to support the symphony and its programs. It is an ongoing effort, and I look forward to more members of the community joining our musical family.

ollaborating and partnering with others makes us stronger. At the BSO we work with many others throughout the season who bring us resources we just couldn’t afford on our own. The King Center for the Performing Arts, where we are privileged to be the Orchestra in Residence, is a very important partner in presenting our concerts and events. From the Administrative Staff to the Box Office to the Technical Staff, they help ensure that you have a great experience. Once again they hosted our Cultural Arts Showcase this year so that all the arts organizations in Brevard had a chance to shine.
Our Guilds are vital partners who raise much needed funds and keep the BSO in the spotlight. They present fun and successful events and provide essential volunteer hours for many jobs that are critical to our success. Volunteers in the community serve on our Board of Directors who guarantee that the BSO is run efficiently and within our mission to provide quality entertainment, outreach opportunities and educational programs. Our generous sponsors, local foundations, and donors make sure we have sufficient funding to present these concerts and all the programs that make our community a better place to live. His Broadway credits include the title role in Lestat and Buddy in Side Show, plus the title role in the American premiere of Martin Guerre and Ravenal in a London revival of Show Boat. C
hristopher Confessore serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor and Principal POPS Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure in Brevard, the orchestra has enjoyed a dramatic and sustained period of artistic excellence and has been praised for its innovative programming, spirited performances and broad repertoire. His work with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has garnered rave reviews for his “special talent for drawing the broadly lyrical out of his orchestra.” He leads the orchestra in a wide range of Classics, Pops, Educational and Outreach performances each season. In recent seasons, Mr. Confessore’s schedule as a guest conductor has included appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, New Mexico Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. He appears annually as a conductor of Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Processional at EPCOT – a production featuring a full orchestra, 300-voice choir and celebrity narrators including Whoopi Goldberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Sinese, and Chita Rivera. Praised for his ability to communicate with audiences of all ages, the 2015-16 Season sees Mr. Confessore leading Educational and Outreach Concerts with four different orchestras for a combined audience of more than 70,000 students. Following his Kennedy Center debut, The Washington Post proclaimed: “Huang is definitely an artist with the goods for a significant career.” In 2013, The New York Times praised his “masterly account of Barber’s Violin Concerto” with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall. Winner of the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Mr. Huang made critically acclaimed recital debuts in New York at Merkin Concert Hall and in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center. Other honors include First Prize at the 2009 International Violin Competition Sion-Valais in Switzerland, the 2009 Chi-Mei Cultural Foundation Arts Award for Taiwan’s Most Promising Young Artists, the 2013 Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant, and 2014 Classical Recording Foundation Young Artist Award. Born in Taiwan, Mr. Huang began violin lessons at the age of seven. Since entering the Juilliard Pre-College at fourteen, he has continued studies at the school with Hyo Kang and I-Hao Lee. Mr. Huang was a recipient of the inaugural Kovner Fellowship at The Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Program Notes Symphony No. 1 in B Flat Major, op. 38, Spring Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
I. Andante un poco maestoso—Allegro molto vivace II. Larghetto III. Scherzo: Molto vivace—Molto più vivace—Tempo I IV. Allegro animato e grazioso The most felicitous and fortunate event of Robert Schumann’s life was his marriage in 1840 to Clara Wieck – later Clara Schumann – who would become one of the eras most successful and recognizable piano virtuosos. “Young Romantics” Robert and Clara first took notice of one another when she was nine years old and he was nineteen. Endeavoring to improve his pianistic technique, Robert became a pupil (and border) of Clara’s father, Friedrich, a fine teacher as evidenced by his daughter’s success, but a rigid and domineering man determined to carry out his plan for his gifted daughter’s success as a concert pianist. After four years Robert and Clara developed feelings for each other and eventually fell deeply in love. Quite expectedly, Friedrich viewed Robert as a threat to the promising career he so carefully mapped out for his daughter. He did everything in his power to prevent Clara from ruination at the hands of such a hypersensitive and impractical young man. When Clara reported her father’s misgivings, in particular the charge of laziness, Robert became defiant and answered: “I am a young man of twenty-eight, with a very active mind, and an artist in addition…. And you mean to say all my industry and simplicity, all that I have done, is quite lost upon your father?” Finally, in true Romantic fashion, Robert and Clara hoisted their feelings up high and over the father’s objections obtained court permission to marry. They were wed in September of 1840. The Schumann marriage proved nothing short of idyllic, with both extraordinary minds complementing and completing each other. Where Clara was the stabilizing force in her husband’s life; Robert was the spiritual beacon in hers. Both encouraged each other and offered the most profound mutual respect. Given the high-spirited tone and timing of the First Symphony – composed in the winter months of 1841, soon after his marriage to Clara the previous fall – there is no question as to the work’s emotional thrust. and happier future. The young couple’s spirits were further buoyed with the knowledge that by early fall they would welcome their first child together (Marie Schuman was born on September 1st). It is ironic and appropriate that Schumann’s “Spring” Symphony was conceived in the throes of a cold and dreary Leipzig winter, for the symphony is as much about the anticipation and longing for spring as it is of the season itself. In a letter to fellow composer Ludwig Spohr, he elaborated on the work’s beginnings: “I wrote this Symphony at the end of winter with a spring-like urge… such as is given every year anew to all men, even to the most aged, I think.” He continued, “Description and painting were not part of my intention, but I do believe that the season in which this Symphony was born influenced its structure and helped to make it what it is.” There is another sense – a literary one – in which Schumann’s Symphony warrants the sobriquet, “Spring.” Profoundly attracted to literature, Schumann took direct inspiration from the closing couplet of a ballad about spring by the German poet, Adoph Böttger, to whom the work is dedicated. The poem describes the bleakness of a landscape darkened by clouds, only to end with the lines: VI SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1

Initially, on the manuscript score of the symphony Schumann even provided titles for the four movements: “Spring’s Awakening,” “Evening,” “Merry Companions,” and “Spring in Full Flower.” Although later removed (probably to avoid narrow and literal interpretation), they do provide insight as to the character and mood of the movements. Later, he implored a conductor to “instill in [his] orchestra the sense of longing for spring. This was what I felt most while writing this work. The initial trumpet passage should come… like a summons to waken. The rest of the introduction might suggest the appearance of green everywhere, and perhaps the flutter of a butterfly. In the Allegro molto vivace [that follows], everything associated with springtime gradually comes together.” From that trumpet fanfare, the main theme of the movement develops and reemerges twice more, in the recapitulation and in the coda. In the following inner movements it becomes manifest again, returning in earnest, transformed, in the finale, as an exhilarating and joyous expression of all that is “spring.” Hardly able to contain her enthusiasm for her newlywed husband’s propitious new creation, Clara gushed to her diary: “I should never finish talking about the buds, the scent of violets, the fresh green leaves, the birds in the air—all of which one hears living and stirring through it in youthful strength… the poetic spirit of this work has reached my inmost heart.” May it reach yours, too!
Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 46 Max Bruch (1838-1920) I. II. III. IV.

Max Bruch was born in Cologne in 1838, the son of a chief of police and later official censor of the press. His mother was the musical parent, known as an able pianist, singer, educator, and hostess of musical soirees. Bruch’s personality seems to have been passed down from his father (he was known for an authoritarian, humorless, and self-important disposition), with his artistic nature coming straight from his nurturing mother. education from his mother and proved to be a child prodigy, composing his first symphony and quartet at the age of fourteen, the latter winning for him a four-year scholarship that enabled him to study with composers Ferdinand Hiller and Carl Reinecke. Bruch’s compositional style owed much to his two early teachers who passed along a rather conservative and myopic view of music. Although Bruch lived to be eighty-two, his style never really progressed and in fact stayed stuck in the mid-19th century, adhering to the legacies of Mendelssohn and Schumann, and in contradistinction from more innovative contemporaries like Richard Strauss and Max Reger and progressives like Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. Bruch wrote prolifically in several mediums, and produced over his career three operas, three symphonies, three violin concertos as well as a dozen choral works, chamber music, songs and piano music. But, essentially, Bruch is known for the Violin Concerto No. 1, the Scottish Fantasy, as well as his Kol nidrei for cello and orchestra. Bruch was most effective writing for the violin, an instrument he preferred over the piano, believing that the violin could “sing a melody better than a piano, and melody is the soul of music.” At its finest, his music was polished and lyrically appealing, at times conveying moments of exceptional beauty.

~Max Bruch In particular, the folk melodies of Scotland fascinated Bruch. He took inspiration directly from the writings of Sir Walter Scott; and was enamored of Scottish folk music, mining material from The Scots Musical Museum, an extensive anthology of Scottish folk songs, co-compiled by poet Robert Burns. Out of this passion for the indigenous music of Scotland arose the Scottish Fantasy, a work for violin and orchestra depicting the barren, brooding landscape of VIII SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Program Notes Continued... Scotland in a musical setting containing folk-inspired harmonies and dark orchestral sonorities. It was conceived in Liverpool during the winter of 1880, for the eminent Spanish virtuoso, Pablo de Sarasate. The world premiere featured Sarasate as soloist, and was presented in September of that year at a Bach festival in Hamburg. The performance proved that music is indeed a “universal” and international language, bringing together a Spanish violinist, a German composer, and traditional Scottish folk music. The Fantasy is set in four movements –Adagio cantabile/Allegro/Andante sostenuto/Finale: Allegro guerriero—and is preceded by a grave and somber orchestral introduction for brass and harp (prominent throughout), followed by rhapsodic flights of fantasy for the violin. Bruch described it as “an old bard, who contemplates a ruined castle, and laments the glorious times of old.” All four movements are based on actual Scottish folk songs, the first movement luxuriating on the tender and nostalgic tune, Auld Robb Morris. The Allegro (“Dance”) reproduces the droning of bagpipes in the lower strings, over which the soloist plays the lively dance tune, The Dusty Miller (bringing to mind country-fiddle technique). The third movement follows without pause and is the emotional center of the piece. The music tugs at the heartstrings with the soloist singing the beautiful and tender melody, I’m Down for Lack of Johnnie. The Finale is the most technically challenging of the four, with the soloist bringing the virtuoso fireworks to a rousing close. The movement derives from the song “Scots Wha’ Hae, which, legend has it was sung by Robert the Bruce at his victorious battle over the English at Bannockburn in 1314.
An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise Peter Maxwell Davies (b. 1934)
Born on September 8, 1934 in Manchester, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is one of Britain’s most renowned and successful modern composers. He was educated at the Royal Manchester College of Music and Manchester University. Following his graduation in 1957, he won an Italian government scholarship to study with Goffredo Petrasi in Rome. While there he wrote his orchestral work Prolation, a work that was performed at the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival in Rome in 1959. It was so successful that it won the Olivetti Prize and helped to springboard the composer’s career. Later that year he returned to England and taught for three years at the Cirencester Grammar School. Previously much influenced by Viennese SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Program Notes Continued... serialism, his practical experience with children prompted him to develop a theory of education and led to a simpler and leaner compositional sound. With the help of a strong recommendation from Aaron Copland, Davies was able to secure a Harkness Fellowship in 1962 enabling him to study with Roger Sessions at Princeton. Three years later he joined the UNESCO Conference on Music in Education traveling around the world on a lecture tour, becoming in 1966-1967 the composer-in-residence at the University of Adelaide (Australia). His theatrical works include his operas Taverner, Resurrection, and The Doctor of Myddfai. His orchestral works include some eight symphonies, which The Times has called “the most important symphonic cycle since Shostakovich.” He has also written numerous chamber operas, concerto, some lighter orchestral works, and major works for chorus, soloists and orchestra including The Three Kings, Job and The Jacobite Rising. More recently Davies has concentrated his compositional efforts on chamber music, and current commissions have included a cycle of ten string quartets, which were performed in their entirety at the Wigmore Hall in London by the Maggini Quartet over a five-year period. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in March 2004. The Boston Pops Orchestra commissioned Davies’ An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise in 1985 for its centennial, receiving its first performance under the direction of John Williams. The composer offers this description: “This work is a picture-postcard recording of a wedding on [the island of] Hoy, Orkney, with the guests arriving out of violent weather, the processional, the tuning up of the band, the increasingly inebriated dance, the walk home through the night across the island, then the sunrise.”

BSO Guilds “Besides raising funds, the most important aspects of the Guilds are to be a resource to create continued good will and a positive image for the orchestra and its subscribers.” ~Carole Gatto, South Guild President The Brevard Symphony Orchestra Guilds - North and South - together comprise a volunteer support organization which serves to promote, sustain and assist the orchestra in every way possible. The approximately 300 members are committed to increasing public awareness of the orchestra’s activities, the quality of its performances and the service it renders the community. The Guild’s activities are focused on these major areas: FUNDRAISING: The Guilds contribute a substantial portion of the orchestra’s annual operating budget, through a variety of fundraising projects throughout the year. They also furnish essential personnel for major fundraisers undertaken by the Board of Directors. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: The Guilds play a major role in the annual season ticket campaign. CONCERT ASSISTANCE: The Guilds share responsibility for providing refreshments for orchestra rehearsals, and for hosting receptions for musicians and audiences. New members are accepted at any time. GENERAL INFORMATION Join the BSO’s Email List: Stay updated on upcoming concerts, events and special offers, by registering to receive our e-newsletters. Sign up online at BrevardSymphony.com or by calling the BSO office at 321.242.2024. Single Tickets: Are currently on sale through the King Center Box Office. They may be purchased in person, by telephone (321) 242-2219 or online at BrevardSymphony.com. Single tickets may also be available at the King Center Box Office two hours prior to the concert. Teachers and Active Military: Teachers and active military receive a 50% discount on all subscription and single tickets for series concerts (Areas 2 & 3 only). Teachers are defined as any person instructing, full time, in a learning institution (elementary, secondary or college). A military or educational ID is required. College Students: Full time students enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution can stay “tuned in” on Facebook and Twitter for special same concert day announcements for $10 Same-Day Rush Tickets. Student I.D. is required and a small handling fee will apply. Tickets must be purchased at the box office window of the King Center. Seating will be best available. Limit two (2) per person with valid I.D. Concert Club: Students in grades 4 through 12 are eligible to join for FREE. Benefits include: Email Newsletters; Invitation to attend a BSO Open Rehearsals and option to buy subscription concert tickets for member and a guest for $6.00 each in area three or can purchase two season tickets in areas two or three for only $5 per concert per person. Excludes April 30, 2016 performance. Call the BSO office for details. Group Sales: Groups of 20 or more members are invited to attend single series concerts at a special rate. Call the BSO Business Office for further details. Ticket Refunds and Exchanges: Sorry, no cash refunds or exchanges on single tickets. Exchanges only available to current BSO subscribers. Unused Tickets: Last minute conflicts sometimes occur, but your tickets should not go to waste. They make a perfect gift to a fellow music-lover. Another alternative is to return your tickets, seven (7) business days prior, to the BSO. If resold, your purchase price will be considered a tax-deductible contribution for which you will receive a receipt following the performance. Resale of tickets will be more likely the further in advance they are returned. Lost Tickets: If you misplace your tickets, call the BSO Office and a location pass for your seat will be issued and can be picked up at the King Center Box Office the night of the performance. Special Seating: The Brevard Symphony Orchestra encourages attendance by physically disabled patrons. For special seating information, please call the BSO Business Office.
