I am very excited to work with our outstanding musicians to bring these amazing masterworks to you! Phenomenal guest artists will be sharing the stage with your BSO throughout the season. We have an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists for Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira joins us for Barber’s Violin Concerto in November. Our Concertmaster, Lisa Ferrigno, plays Bach in January and pianist Rich Ridenour shares favorite piano pieces at our February Pops Concert. In March, we’ll present violinist Paul Huang performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy - and in April, pianist Tanya Bannister performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. And don’t miss a very Special Event we’ve added to our season at the end of April – an evening with Broadway Star Hugh Panaro – Broadway’s longest-running Phantom! Your Brevard Symphony Orchestra offers much more to our community than our Subscription Series Concerts. Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. BSO Board Chair’s Message

A

s BSO board chair, my travels this past year revealed that the arts are alive and well in our Florida communities.

“Though the music we all revere and love remains constant, audiences often change the dynamic of the way we present our product.”

The BSO Board of Directors is very aware that we serve a broad range of interest and appreciation and we strive to provide musical experiences that rise to those levels. As much as possible audience suggestions and input are incorporated in program planning - and we are usually one to two years ahead in determining themes and musical selections for your listening pleasure. I am so proud of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, for his forward thinking and musical vision. His willingness to grow and expend in his musical life translates into fantastic programs for our community. The orchestra members have continued to follow in the vision and excellence of the conductor. The skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. All of us must strive to broaden the audience base and encourage volunteers to support the symphony and its programs. It is an ongoing effort, and I look forward to more members of the community joining our musical family.

ollaborating and partnering with others makes us stronger. At the BSO we work with many others throughout the season who bring us resources we just couldn’t afford on our own. The King Center for the Performing Arts, where we are privileged to be the Orchestra in Residence, is a very important partner in presenting our concerts and events. Program Notes Piano Concerto No.1 in E-flat Major, S. 124 Franz Liszt

Devil of a fellow—such a young rascal!

– Ludwig van Beethoven

Music is never stationary; successive forms and styles are only like so many resting places—like tents pitched and taken down again on the road to the Ideal. – Franz Liszt

(1811-86)

During the virtuoso years of his musical career, Franz Liszt’s high flying pianistic feats and mesmerizing stage presence led to adulation from an adoring public only matched by the great Paganini. Women were said to shriek with ecstasy and swoon with desire when he took the stage. The poet Heine recounts a recital where two Hungarian countesses vying for Liszt’s snuffbox, wrestled each other to the ground and battled until they were exhausted. “Manly” men were intimidated and frightened by his daring and ferocity and audiences were fearful and put on guard. As one unnamed contemporary said of Liszt’s concerts, “Terrified pianos flee into every corner…gutted instruments strew the stage, and the audience sits mute with fear and amazement.” Liszt, the virtuoso, garnered widespread fame and considerable wealth, but not a reputation for artistry or musical depth. Despite Liszt’s egomaniacal nature, on some level he recognized this artistic immaturity and so decided to switch gears entirely and dedicate himself to conducting and composition. In 1848, he retired from the concert stage and assumed the duties of Kapellmeister to the grand-ducal court of Weimar. Liszt’s three major works for piano and orchestra – the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 and the Totentanz – were conceived during the composer’s itinerant period as a traveling virtuoso and then completed years later when Liszt had developed and honed his skills as an orchestral composer, e.g., the symphonic poems including Tasso and Les Préludes. He drafted the two concertos in 183940, put them on a shelf to marinate for the better part of a decade, took them up again a year after arriving in Weimar, and fully revised them in 1853. Liszt demanded that a concerto be ”clear in sense, brilliant in expression, and grand in style.” He desired to be taken seriously as a composer and so proceeded carefully until completely satisfied. Seventeen years later, January 7, 1857, the Piano Concerto No. 1 received its premiere in Weimar with Liszt as pianist and Hector Berlioz conducting. V

Program Notes Continued...

All three of Liszt’s works take an original approach to the question of form. He lost interest in the traditional layout of separate movements – introduction, adagio, and finale – and instead looked to achieve unity through the idea of one continuous movement bringing together many smaller sections consisting of varying tempos and moods. Liszt brings all these disparate elements together through transference and metamorphosis of themes. This groundbreaking technique is known as “thematic transformation,” or to use the more fetching metaphorical phrase of William Foster Apthorp, “The Life and Adventures of a Melody.” There is no break between any of the concerto’s sections, owing to the transformation of themes, whereby melodies or motives are repeated and developed in various guises to be brought back throughout the course of the work. Liszt’s First Piano Concerto is a work of distinct and multitudinous episodes following one another in rapid succession. In order to accommodate these diverse and fragmentary ideas, the composer employs a novel sense of form. From an essay entitled “Liszt Misunderstood,” pianist Alfred Brendel offers his thoughts on this technique:

There is something fragmentary about Liszt’s work; its musical argument, perhaps by its nature, is often not brought to a conclusion. But is the fragment not the purest, the most legitimate form of Romanticism? When Utopia becomes the primary goal, when the attempt is made to contain the illimitable, then form will have to remain “open” in order that the illimitable may enter. It is the business of the interpreter to show us how a general pause may connect rather than separate two paragraphs, how a transition may mysteriously transform the musical argument. This is a magical art. By some process incomprehensible to the intellect, organic unity becomes established; the “open form” reaches its conclusion in the infinite. – Alfred Brendel

VI SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 6

Symphony No. 5 Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) Part I:

Funeral march: With measured step. Strict. Like a cortege. Stormily. With greatest vehemence. Part II: Scherzo: Vigorously, not too fast. Part III: Adagietto: Very slow. Rondo-Finale: Allegro giocoso. Lively.

If one wishes to make music, one should not paint or write poetry or desire to describe anything. But what one makes music out of is still the whole – that is the feeling, thinking, breathing, and suffering human being. -Gustav Mahler

Written one hundred years ago in a letter to the great conductor Bruno Walter, this manifesto by Mahler sums up well the composer’s lifelong mission: ask and confront head-on the really big questions. According to Walter, Mahler was obsessed with questions like: “From whence do we come? Whither does our road take us? Have I really willed this life, as Schopenhauer thinks, before I was even conceived? Why am I made to feel that I am free while yet I am constrained within my character, as in a prison? What is the object of toil and sorrow? How am I to understand the cruelty and malice in the creations of a kind God? Will the meaning of life be finally revealed by death?” With a probing philosophical mind like that, Mahler was obviously not the composer of delightful little ditties, intermezzi, or polkas. Rather, Mahler’s significance in the history of music is as a composer of massive, intensely expressive orchestral music and song cycles. His symphonies in particular have blown many a mind and woofer. In all, Mahler completed nine symphonies and was at work on a tenth before his passing. Each is cast on a grand-scale and deals with the full range of human emotion, from despair, sadness and resignation to happiness, joy and exultation. In his own words: “To write a symphony is, for me, to construct a world.” Perhaps fellow composer Hans Werner Henze places Mahler best when he declares: “For the first time in musical history, music is interrogating itself about the reasons for its existence and about its nature… it is a knowing music, with the same tragic consciousness as Freud, Kafka, Musil.” Gustav Mahler began the Fifth Symphony during the summer of 1901 at his SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

VII

vacation home at Maiernigg on Lake Worth and “completed” it the following year, although significant revisions followed all the way into 1909. It received its premiere in October of 1904 when the Mahler himself led the first performance with the Gurzenich Orchestra in Cologne. So different in aesthetic and style from his earlier symphonies, Mahler was quite anxious that this daring new work would not just confuse and disappoint audiences and critics, but that it would go further and cause them to be dismayed and perhaps even outraged. The Fifth Symphony is unique in many ways and marked a major turning point in Mahler’s career as a composer. It was the first symphony that either did not quote songs extensively, as in the Symphony No. 1, Titan; or that did not add voices, as in symphonies 2, 3, and 4. The Fifth was the first symphony to eschew folk inspiration, an explicit program, and fairytale elements. Musically, it was the first symphony to make extensive use of polyphony, bringing together what seem to be rather disparate melodies. As the musicologist Deryck Cooke put it: “Instead we have a triptych of ‘pure’ orchestral works, more realistically rooted in human life, more stern and forthright in utterance, more tautly symphonic, with a new granite-like hardness of orchestration.” The triptych Cooke speaks of refers to a layout of five movements divided into three parts: Part I contains the first two movements, which Mahler unifies by giving them shared melodic material. The Scherzo stands alone in Part II. And Part III is made up of the final two movements, beginning with the brief Adagietto, which serves in essence as the introduction to the Finale. Although it is true that there is no clear explicit program to the Fifth, and keeping in mind Mahler’s thunderous warning voiced across a dinner-party table, “Perish all programs!” – It is impossible to ignore the fact that this was the first symphony the composer wrote while deeply in love. Regarded as one of the most beautiful and brilliant women in Vienna, Mahler married Alma Schindler in 1902. The Romantic was deeply enamored and thought of the Fifth as “their” symphony. Mahler himself confirmed the symbiotic relationship between his music and his life when he said: “Only when I experience do I compose – only when I compose do I experience.” In particular, it is very difficult not to think of Alma and Gustav’s Mahler’s romance when listening to the beautiful and tender Adagietto, heard by many to be a “love letter” to Alma. Even so, the Fifth was intended as “pure” music. Mahler did not provide any written description of the Symphony, as he had for his earlier works, but was determined to let the music speak for itself. The only quasi-programmatic VIII SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 6

Program Notes Continued... pointer in the score is the title of the opening movement – “Trauermarsch” (“Funeral March”) – but even this is merely an evocation of mood and not a description of a sequence of events. One feels an attempt in the Fifth to move away from the dreamy, mysterious, and symbolic aspects of Romanticism into a new and modern era. As the musicologist Michael Kennedy put it: “It stands like a mighty arch at the gateway to 20th –century music.” Nevertheless, Mahler was inherently Romantic and the Fifth’s emotional trajectory ranges from funereal weight and tragedy to magical dreaminess to giddy optimism and to outright exaltation. The difference is that for the first time Mahler succeeds in marking an important advance toward a more organic concept of structure and increased use of thematic linkages between movements. Continuous development and intertwining of themes adds a sense of cohesion and rigorous sense of form. The Symphony No. 5 gets underway in a solemn mood with a funeral march in C sharp minor. But the first movement, Funeral March, takes us on a journey through many contrasting moods, the emotions running the gamut from lugubrious to hysterical. Opening with a trumpet call and a stern triplet fanfare, Mahler summons us into a dismal, shuddering, and quaking first theme. This soon leads into the subsidiary subject, a dark and lonely violin melody. In the thick of working through these two themes, Mahler brings in a section that represents an impassioned cry of pain and despair. As this outburst fades, the triplet and violin themes return to bring the movement to an end. The ensuing A minor Allegro - the second movement which concludes Part I – is downright frightening what with its wildness decried through heaving string passages and outbursts in the brass. Themes from the first movement are brought back and there seems to be movement toward a sense of attempted catharsis and resolution. A radiant chorale from the brass gives us hope for transcendence, but this bid is cut short and aborted in favor of disintegration SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Program Notes Continued... into a reprise of the shadowy opening material. Isolating the emotional roller coaster of Part I from the relaxation and exultation of Part II, along comes the Scherzo – Part II. The mood is effectively altered with a world of exuberance and manic energy. Haunting passages sounded by the solo horn and wind solos make up the movement’s middle section, though, reminding us that anxiety and contemplation are still with us. A coda in which four themes sound at once rounds out this movement, enriched with the bold and energetic ingenuity of Mahler’s polyphony. In the final two movements of the Fifth that combine to form Part III, Mahler brings us home from tragedy to ultimate tranquility. The overall feeling and mood becomes more intimate in nature as the fifth movement descends upon us with an unforgettable sense of tranquility. This is the movement termed Gustav’s “love letter to his wife Alma,” and while not proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it is easy to imagine. Scored sparingly for harp and strings only, this movement seems suspended in time and space and is irresistible in touching us with the depth of its emotional appeal With virtually no break, Part III picks up and concludes with a horn call, which brings in the big rondo finale (fifth movement). In addition to the horn, a bassoon, an oboe, and a clarinet suggest subjects, which all eventually turn up later in the movement. Immediately, we sense that the air is clearing and that sunshine is coming. In a journey that began with despair and despondency, joy and vitality are then released in the form of a stunning triple fugue. The fugue states the fugue subject in the cellos, bringing in the second violins and basses, then the first violins and violas, then expanding to the winds and brasses. Along the way themes glide in and out, including several fragments from the preceding Adagietto. At the finish, Mahler plays the hymn-like brasses in a mighty chorale setting against the fugue subject in the woodwinds and strings, building to an exhilarating and thoroughly satisfying conclusion.

Experience a Divine Culture “I am completely enchanted." —HRH Princess Michael of Kent

THERE WAS A TIME when Emperors ruled dynasties, heroes became legends, and the world was full of magic and miracles. What if you could travel across centuries, visit imperial palaces, and discover realms hidden to the human eye? And what do 5,000 years of civilization sound like? Shen Yun’s live orchestra has found the answer. Shen Yun’s unique approach blends the singular beauty and expressiveness of Chinese instruments with the grandeur of a Western orchestra. The result is a gorgeous and vivid sound with great emotional range—perfect for bringing to life the soul of an ancient civilization. It takes musical storytelling to a new level.

“I come away with feeling like a better human being for having experienced this magnificent event.” —Omega Medina, opera singer & former senior manager of classical music for the Grammy Awards

“I have reviewed over 3,000 shows, none can compare to what I saw tonight.” –Richard Connema, renowned Broadway critic

One Day—Two Amazing Shows! WEDNESDAY JANUARY 20 2 PM & 7:30 PM Let your journey through 5,000 MAXWELL C. KING CENTER, MELBOURNE years of civilization begin…
