From Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, along with Mozart’s 41st Symphony and the First Symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Schumann, this is as strong a lineup as we’ve ever presented. I am very excited to work with our outstanding musicians to bring these amazing masterworks to you! Phenomenal guest artists will be sharing the stage with your BSO throughout the season. We have an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists for Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira joins us for Barber’s Violin Concerto in November. Our Concertmaster, Lisa Ferrigno, plays Bach in January and pianist Rich Ridenour shares favorite piano pieces at our February Pops Concert. In March, we’ll present violinist Paul Huang performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy - and in April, pianist Tanya Bannister performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. And don’t miss a very Special Event we’ve added to our season at the end of April – an evening with Broadway Star Hugh Panaro – Broadway’s longest-running Phantom! Your Brevard Symphony Orchestra offers much more to our community than our Subscription Series Concerts. Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event that draws thousands of audience members of all ages. BSO Board Chair’s Message
A
s BSO board chair, my travels this past year revealed that the arts are alive and well in our Florida communities.
“Though the music we all revere and love remains constant, audiences often change the dynamic of the way we present our product.”
The BSO Board of Directors is very aware that we serve a broad range of interest and appreciation and we strive to provide musical experiences that rise to those levels. As much as possible audience suggestions and input are incorporated in program planning - and we are usually one to two years ahead in determining themes and musical selections for your listening pleasure. I am so proud of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, for his forward thinking and musical vision. His willingness to grow and expend in his musical life translates into fantastic programs for our community. The orchestra members have continued to follow in the vision and excellence of the conductor. The skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. All of us must strive to broaden the audience base and encourage volunteers to support the symphony and its programs. It is an ongoing effort, and I look forward to more members of the community joining our musical family.

ollaborating and partnering with others makes us stronger. At the BSO we work with many others throughout the season who bring us resources we just couldn’t afford on our own. The King Center for the Performing Arts, where we are privileged to be the Orchestra in Residence, is a very important partner in presenting our concerts and events. From the Administrative Staff to the Box Office to the Technical Staff, they help ensure that you have a great experience. Once again they hosted our Cultural Arts Showcase this year so that all the arts organizations in Brevard had a chance to shine.
Our Guilds are vital partners who raise much needed funds and keep the BSO in the spotlight. They present fun and successful events and provide essential volunteer hours for many jobs that are critical to our success. Volunteers in the community serve on our Board of Directors who guarantee that the BSO is run efficiently and within our mission to provide quality entertainment, outreach opportunities and educational programs. Our generous sponsors, local foundations, and donors make sure we have sufficient funding to present these concerts and all the programs that make our community a better place to live. In-Kind sponsors save us thousands of dollars every year – special recognition goes to Courtyard Marriott in Cocoa Beach; Berman, Hopkins, Wright and LaHam, CPAs; Detect Alert; Slug-a-Bug; Eau Gallie Florist and our many media sponsors. We are pleased to partner with other groups – the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Brevard Community Chorus, and the Eau Gallie Arts District, just to name a few. However, our most important partner is you – our loyal audience. You are the reason for these beautiful concerts. Maestro Chris Confessore and our very talented musicians love to perform and it’s all for you! Thank you for being our partner.

Program Notes
Songs from the Gulf of Sorrows Mark Piszczek (b. 1957)
Notes from the Composer: On April 20th, 2011, the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, I was at my loft in Peterborough, New Hampshire watching a news special about the lasting environmental effects to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster. The surreal footage of the countless animals and marine life devastated by the relentless dark tide of oil brought tears to my eyes. This deep emotional experience moved me to begin a new musical work which grew into, Songs From The Gulf Of Sorrows. The scope of the catastrophe was so large, I decided that nothing short of a symphonic work would do it justice. The piece grew out of a four note melodic motive, stated by a solo English Horn, which becomes the musical DNA of the entire piece. The work is essentially in four parts, the first portraying the dawn of that fateful day as well as the natural beauty of the gulf and the creatures that inhabit it. Part Two grows more ominous and threatening, as nature is ravaged at the hand of mankind. I felt that Part Three needed to inject a sense of hope and deliverance into the narrative, so I decided to incorporate the melody of the classic hymn, All Creatures Of Our God And King, but harmonized in a more modern setting. Part Four becomes more troubled and foreboding, metaphorically portraying the lasting effects of the disaster on the natural world. The piece ends with a serene and poignant coda, where a solo English horn once again states the original four-note motive, as if to say, every single creature, no matter how small, is worth fighting for. Songs From The Gulf Of Sorrows is both a musical eulogy and benediction for wildlife victims of this man made catastrophe. Modern, but intensely lyrical, it paints a moving portrait of hope in the face of unspeakable tragedy. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso Scherzo: Molto vivace – Presto Adagio molto e cantabile – Andante moderato Finale: Ode To Joy Arguably the most iconic work in Western art, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is a colossal and towering masterpiece against which all subsequent symphonies have been measured. Its unprecedented size, imposing grandeur of conception, and revolutionary choral finale both inspired and intimidated subsequent composers. It took Johannes Brahms the better part of two decades to complete his First Symphony: “You don’t know what it’s like to be dogged by his footsteps.” Indeed, what can follow so profound a musical utterance as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony? Nonetheless, it must be said that only a small number of musicians would actually make the claim that the Ninth is the greatest symphony ever written, or even that it is the composer’s finest VI SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
symphony. The Fifth is often cited as the most perfect of symphonies and the “Eroica” has frequently been termed as the most important of symphonies. Still, we approach every performance of the Beethoven Ninth as a major event in our lives. Its impact is so powerful that many of us can even remember exactly when and where we experienced it for the first time. The Ninth occupies a treasured place in our hearts and minds, moving and inspiring us to experience joy and realize nothing less than the brotherhood of man. In conception as well as execution, the Beethoven Ninth is an innovative and revolutionary work. We are taken to new places in all four of the symphony’s movements: in the mysterious harmonic ambiguities of the opening Allegro [1st mvt.]; in the arresting and even violent rhythmic pulse of the Scherzo [2nd mvt.]; in the entry into new harmonic regions in the expansive Adagio [3rd mvt.]; and in the finale [4th mvt.], a setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy, in breaking the bonds of conventional symphonic form. The Ninth is the first symphony in the history of music to combine a gigantic choral section with purely orchestral movements. The German playwright and poet Friedrich Schiller published his ode An die Freude (To Joy) in 1785. Five years later, at the age of twenty, Beethoven became enamored of the poem and contemplated setting it to music. The poem’s call to tolerance and human harmony resonated with Beethoven throughout his life. It would parallel his ardent belief in the underlying ideals of the French Revolution: the pursuit of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. When the Congress of Vienna overturned the ideals of the French Revolution, Beethoven committed to rise again to their defense. Schiller’s Ode to Joy best expressed in poetic form Beethoven’s dream for the brotherhood of man. By choosing it as the text for the finale of his Ninth Symphony, he settled on the words best suited to expressing his own spiritual credo. The Ninth had the longest gestation period of any Beethoven symphony. The composer began thinking about it in 1812 during the time of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. Three years later in 1815, the first sketches of music that would be included in the new symphony (including the scherzo theme) are found in his notebooks. By 1818 most of the scherzo had been completed and Beethoven began to consider including a choral movement in his symphony. Overall, the decade following 1812 was not as productive as usual for the composer, at least by Beethoven’s standards. It was a period full of frustration and continuous crisis owing in large part to the drawn out litigation battle with his sister-in-law over custody of his nephew Karl. As a result, the Ninth lay unattended for several years; it gave way to work on the Hammerklavier and the SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

last three piano sonatas, the Diabelli Variations, the final revision of Fidelio, and the great Missa Solemnis. The Missa took up most of Beethoven’s attention and energy for over four years, leaving little time for work on the Ninth Symphony. He only began concentrated work on the symphony after the Missa had been mostly completed in 1822. He worked on the Ninth intensely throughout 1823, with completion coming in 1824. The first performance took place at the Kärntnerthor Theater in Vienna on May 7, 1824. It was an extraordinary event with a program including the Ninth, the Consecration of the House Overture, and three movements from the Missa Solemnis (also given their premiere). Beethoven was the most celebrated and venerated composer in Vienna, making the concert the city’s most anticipated event of the season. The air in the theater was charged with exceptional energy and excitement. This concert represented the crowning achievement of the composer’s life’s work. Beethoven was on fire for the concert and at fever pitch. One account came from violinist Joseph Böhm, who recalled of the composer, “Beethoven himself conducted, that is, he stood in front of a conductor’s stand (the actual direction was in Michael Umlauf’s hands; we musicians followed his baton only) and threw himself back and forth like a madman. At one moment, he stretched to his full height, at the next he crouched down to the floor. He flailed about with both his hands and feet as though he wanted to play all the instruments and sing all the chorus parts.” When the finale ended and thunderous applause began, Beethoven continued standing with his back to the audience and beating time. Completely deaf and lost in the rapturous sounds in his own mind, Beethoven had no idea that the performance was over. George Grove, who heard it from Karoline Unger, the alto soloist of that night, described the poignant scene: “Fraulein Unger turned him, or induced him to turn and face the people, who were still clapping their hands and giving way to the greatest demonstrations of pleasure. His turning about, and the sudden conviction thereby forced on everybody that he had not done so before because he could not hear what was going on acted like a shock on all present, and a volcanic explosion of sympathy and admiration followed.” On the following page: The text of the fourth movement is taken from Schiller’s Ode to Joy, save for a few lines penned by Beethoven himself (indicated in italics). The English translation is from the BBC Proms program, provided for a concert held at the Royal Albert Hall (August 11, 2013). Source: http://www. bbc.co.uk/proms/whats-on/2013/august-11/14710

Freude, schöner Götterfunken Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum! Deine Zauber binden wieder Was die Mode streng geteilt; Alle Menschen werden Brüder, Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, Daughter from Elysium, We enter, burning with fervour, heavenly being, your sanctuary! Your magic brings together what fashion has sternly divided. All men shall become brothers, wherever your gentle wings hover.
Whoever has been lucky enough to become a friend to a friend, Whoever has found a beloved wife, let him join our songs of praise! Yes, and anyone who can call one soul his own on this earth! Any who cannot, let them slink away from this gathering in tears!
Every creature drinks in joy at nature’s breast; Good and Bad alike follow her trail of roses. She gives us kisses and wine, a true friend, even in death; Even the worm was given desire, and the cherub stands before God.
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen Durch des Himmels prächt’gen Plan, Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn, Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.
Gladly, just as His suns hurtle through the glorious universe, So you, brothers, should run your course, joyfully, like a conquering hero.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen! Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt! Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen. Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen? Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt? Such’ ihn über’m Sternenzelt! Über Sternen muß er wohnen.
Be embraced, you millions! This kiss is for the whole world! Brothers, above the canopy of stars must dwell a loving father. Do you bow down before Him, you millions? Do you sense your Creator, o world? Seek Him above the canopy of stars! He must dwell beyond the stars.

Jennifer Aylmer Soprano
American soprano Jennifer Aylmer has developed a sterling reputation for her beautiful voice, compelling stage portrayals and impeccable musicianship. The New York Times has hailed her for her, “awesome accuracy,” while The Chicago Sun-Times has recommended that listeners, “bask in the aural delight of Aylmer’s dazzling shifts from regal command to cool insouciance and fatally attractive seduction”. During the 2014-2015 season, Ms. Aylmer was guest soloist in Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato with the Mark Morris Dance Group and the White Light Festival, appeared with the Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival on a series of programs, sang as soprano soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria with Manhattan Concert Productions, and joined Lyric Fest! for concerts in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. She recently made her debut with Dallas Opera as Bertha in Il barbiere di Siviglia and returned to Opera Theater of St. Louis for her now acclaimed performance of Despina in Così fan tutte, and to Portland Opera singing the title role in Handel’s Rodelinda. Stony Brook University recently premiered her new English translation of Hansel and Gretel and also saw her directing Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years at both Stony Brook University’s Staller Center and at the National Opera Center in New York City. The 2014-2015 saw her return to the Metropolitan Opera for productions of The Death of Klinghoffer and Manon. Matthew Trevino
Bass
A former member of the San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola Opera Program and recipient of the “Best Singer Award” by the 2011 Austin Critics’ Table for his performance in The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Matthew Treviño is proving to be one of today’s most sought-after young basses. The San Francisco Chronicle described his recent performances as Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) as “sonorous and neatly malevolent” with The New York Timespraising his “delightfully unctuous portrayal.” Highlights for the 20142015 season included Count Ribbing/Tom in Un ballo in maschera and the duke in Roméo et Juliette with Austin Lyric Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto with Opera Omaha, the role of Eddie in Carly Simon’s opera Romulus Hunt in Nashville, and the role of The Ghost in Gordon Getty’s new opera The Canterville Ghost in Leipzig. Experience a Divine Culture “I am completely enchanted." —HRH Princess Michael of Kent
THERE WAS A TIME when Emperors ruled dynasties, heroes became legends, and the world was full of magic and miracles. What if you could travel across centuries, visit imperial palaces, and discover realms hidden to the human eye? And what do 5,000 years of civilization sound like? Shen Yun’s live orchestra has found the answer. Shen Yun’s unique approach blends the singular beauty and expressiveness of Chinese instruments with the grandeur of a Western orchestra. The result is a gorgeous and vivid sound with great emotional range—perfect for bringing to life the soul of an ancient civilization. It takes musical storytelling to a new level.
“I come away with feeling like a better human being for having experienced this magnificent event.” —Omega Medina, opera singer & former senior manager of classical music for the Grammy Awards
“I have reviewed over 3,000 shows, none can compare to what I saw tonight.” –Richard Connema, renowned Broadway critic
