AN EPIC SEASON Music Director’s Message
W
elcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2015-16 Season. We have an incredible collection of great repertoire scheduled on our Subscription Series Concerts this season. From Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, along with Mozart’s 41st Symphony and the First Symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Schumann, this is as strong a lineup as we’ve ever presented. I am very excited to work with our outstanding musicians to bring these amazing masterworks to you! Phenomenal guest artists will be sharing the stage with your BSO throughout the season. We have an outstanding quartet of vocal soloists for Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira joins us for Barber’s Violin Concerto in November. Our Concertmaster, Lisa Ferrigno, plays Bach in January and pianist Rich Ridenour shares favorite piano pieces at our February Pops Concert. In March, we’ll present violinist Paul Huang performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy - and in April, pianist Tanya Bannister performs Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. And don’t miss a very Special Event we’ve added to our season at the end of April – an evening with Broadway Star Hugh Panaro – Broadway’s longest-running Phantom! Your Brevard Symphony Orchestra offers much more to our community than our Subscription Series Concerts. Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event that draws thousands of audience members of all ages. And my favorite event of the season, our Annual Fifth Grade Concerts, introduces the thrill of live symphonic music to every fifth grader in Brevard County.

A
s BSO board chair, my travels this past year revealed that the arts are alive and well in our Florida communities.
“Though the music we all revere and love remains constant, audiences often change the dynamic of the way we present our product.”
The BSO Board of Directors is very aware that we serve a broad range of interest and appreciation and we strive to provide musical experiences that rise to those levels. As much as possible audience suggestions and input are incorporated in program planning - and we are usually one to two years ahead in determining themes and musical selections for your listening pleasure. I am so proud of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, for his forward thinking and musical vision. His willingness to grow and expend in his musical life translates into fantastic programs for our community. The orchestra members have continued to follow in the vision and excellence of the conductor. The skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. All of us must strive to broaden the audience base and encourage volunteers to support the symphony and its programs. It is an ongoing effort, and I look forward to more members of the community joining our musical family.

ollaborating and partnering with others makes us stronger. At the BSO we work with many others throughout the season who bring us resources we just couldn’t afford on our own. The King Center for the Performing Arts, where we are privileged to be the Orchestra in Residence, is a very important partner in presenting our concerts and events. From the Administrative Staff to the Box Office to the Technical Staff, they help ensure that you have a great experience. Once again they hosted our Cultural Arts Showcase this year so that all the arts organizations in Brevard had a chance to shine.
Our Guilds are vital partners who raise much needed funds and keep the BSO in the spotlight. They present fun and successful events and provide essential volunteer hours for many jobs that are critical to our success. Volunteers in the community serve on our Board of Directors who guarantee that the BSO is run efficiently and within our mission to provide quality entertainment, outreach opportunities and educational programs. Our generous sponsors, local foundations, and donors make sure we have sufficient funding to present these concerts and all the programs that make our community a better place to live. C
hristopher Confessore serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor and Principal POPS Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure in Brevard, the orchestra has enjoyed a dramatic and sustained period of artistic excellence and has been praised for its innovative programming, spirited performances and broad repertoire. His work with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has garnered rave reviews for his “special talent for drawing the broadly lyrical out of his orchestra.” He leads the orchestra in a wide range of Classics, Pops, Educational and Outreach performances each season. In recent seasons, Mr. Confessore’s schedule as a guest conductor has included appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, New Mexico Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. He appears annually as a conductor of Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Processional at EPCOT – a production featuring a full orchestra, 300-voice choir and celebrity narrators including Whoopi Goldberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Sinese, and Chita Rivera. About the Artist
Lisa Ferrigno :: violin
Lisa Ferrigno has served as Concertmaster of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra since 1999. A native of New England, she received her early musical training at the New England Conservatory and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and The Florida State University. Ms. Ferrigno appears frequently as soloist with the Brevard Symphony. She has also performed concertos with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Trujillo and Orquesta Camara del Festival Internacional Bach in Perú, as well as with the Florida Symphony and Orlando Philharmonic Orchestras. As a chamber musician and recitalist, Ms. Ferrigno has performed in festivals throughout the United States and internationally in Perú, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany. Ms. Ferrigno has served as Concertmaster of the Walt Disney World Orchestra since 1996 and was Concertmaster of the Orlando Philharmonic from 19932003. She was a member of the first violin sections of the Florida Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras. Her past orchestral leadership positions included Concertmaster of the Heidelberg Castle Opera Festival in Germany, Principal Second Violinist of the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra in New York, and Principal Second Violinist of the Palm Beach Pops. Ms Ferrigno has a second home in New England and has recently performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Handel Society of Dartmouth and Opera North in New Hampshire. Program Notes Continued... Voyage for String Orchestra John Corigliano (1938- )
John Corigliano is one of the finest and most widely recognized American composers. Among the dozens of citations, doctorates, and other honors he has received are all of the most important music awards — several Grammy’s, a Pulitzer Prize for his Symphony No. 2 (2001), a Grawemeyer for his Symphony No. 1 (1991), the Festival of Two Worlds (Spoleto, Italy) top prize for his Sonata for Violin and Piano (1964), and an Academy Award for his score to Francois Girard’s 1997 film The Red Violin. In late 2007, Sony released the Red Violin Concerto with Joshua Bell and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop. Corigliano serves on the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music, and holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Music at Lehman College, City University of New York, which recently established a composition scholarship in his name. He lives in New York City and in Kent Cliffs, New York. What sets Corigliano apart from some of his contemporaries is an unabashed and unapologetic approach to writing music that is accessible, deeply moving, melodic, tonal, and immediately pleasing to audiences. The composer explains his aesthetic this way: “I care deeply about communicating with my audiences… For quite a while now, too many composers have seemed not much interested in communication, particularly with big audiences, and this has tended to give modern music a bad name… There is just no reason why a composer shouldn’t be able to reach large audiences in a worthwhile way, even if he uses advanced techniques… I wish to be understood, and I think it is the job of every composer to reach out to his audience with all the means at his disposal. Communication should always be a primary goal.” The composer provides the following notes for Voyage: “Voyage for String Orchestra (1976) is an instrumental version of a 1971 a cappella choral work that was a setting of Richard Wilbur’s translation of Baudelaire’s famous L’Invitation au voyage. Wilbur’s poignant setting pictures a world of obsessive imagination — a drugged version of heaven full of sensual imagery. The music echoes the quality of the repeated refrain found in this lush translation: “There, there is nothing else but grace and measure, richness, quietness and pleasure.” VI SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Violin Concerto in E Major, BWV 1042 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Allegro Adagio Allegro assai It is generally agreed that J.S. Bach’s violin concertos were created as part of his court duties at Anhant-Cothen, where he was Court Kappellmeister and Director of the Princely Chamber Musicians to Prince Leopold at Kothen. The period spanned the years 1717-1723 and placed Bach in charge of the secular rather than the sacred music at court. This, then, was a time when Bach was to explore the instrumental rather than the vocal part of his art. As a result, it is from this era that he produced the “Brandenburg” Concertos, the Orchestral Suites, the French Suites, Book I of the Well Tempered Clavier, and numerous other suites and sonatas for solo instruments and clavier. As a point of departure for his concertos, Bach avidly studied and took as his models the recent works of the Italian masters, most notably Antonio Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico (1712). So enamored was he that he transcribed a good number of these compositions as solo works or keyboard concertos for his own purposes. string concertos drew considerably from Italian models, but they also grew from the composer’s own experience as a violinist. Given Bach’s enormous reputation and success as an organist, it is easy to overlook his mastery of strings. So it is important to keep in mind what his son Carl (C.P.E.) wrote, “He played the violin cleanly and penetratingly. He understood to perfection the possibilities of the stringed instruments.” Bach’s violin concertos are among the earliest such works in the orchestral repertory. They are outstanding for luxuriance, poignancy, and joy. Quoting musicologist Edward Downes, “[This music’s] rhythms dance, its melodic line soars, its harmonies branch and blossom with a richness and a sense of inevitable growth in which Bach has no equal.”

Allegro vivace Andante cantabile Menuetto; Allegretto Molto Allegro It was in a depressed frame of mind in 1788, over a span of only eight weeks, that Mozart composed his three greatest symphonies: the 39th, 40th, and No. 41 in C major, the Jupiter. The pain this genius, nevertheless as much human as any of us, endured during his final years was profound: from veneration to being taken for granted; from great demand as to a teacher to one whose pupils dropped like flies; and from financial success to desperate financial circumstances. How does one so endowed with such genius fall so far out of fashion? How can mankind have the depth to recognize genius of such order and then toss it away like an out of fashion pair of shoes? Program Notes Continued... Unfortunately, that is the indignity Mozart experienced during his last years on this earth. It seems ludicrous to hold fast that we must assume that what touched Mozart as a man during these excruciating years came to bear in no way on his music. Musicologists and theorists issue us grave warnings not to read too much into the music. Yet, we do hear that peculiar sadness from time to time, that subtle melancholy creeping in whether we want to admit it or not. Too much analysis based on feeling or intuition is indeed perilous. But we are after all humans too. Hildesheimer was right: Mozart did conceal himself behind his work but he did not hide behind it. It astonishes that from seemingly debilitating circumstances, Mozart was able to achieve one of the greatest miracles in music history. Over a period of a mere two weeks in the summer of 1788, Mozart created the three greatest symphonies of his life (the 39th, 40th,, and 41st). In R.L.F. McCombs’ words, “These symphonies are the monument with which he commemorated crisis in his creative life.” These three gems are significant too in that they made successive strides straight into the full-voiced expressions of the nineteenth century, the world of orchestral giants. When listening to the opening movement of the Jupiter, we could safely judge that Mozart was the happiest and most successful man in the world. Again, here is the riddle of Mozart. This first movement – Allegro vivace – is grand, but it has a quaint charm as well. We feel a liveliness of spirit, a rich and steady assortment and stream of fecund melodic ideas, and even a gaiety and a sense of delight throughout. Mozart even quotes a phrase from a comic aria he had composed earlier in the year for insertion into somebody else’s opera buffa. This gaily-mocking melody was originally sung to the words: “You’ve but sluggish wit/ Dear Pompeo / Go and learn a bit / Of the ways of the world.” While not wearing his heart-on-the-sleeve in the second movement – Andante cantabile – Mozart does offer one of the most intensely affective essays in Classical-era music. This is a ravishing Andante whose expressivity and eloquence have led many to call it the finest of all Mozart slow movements. It is fascinating to hear the movement unfold with Mozart both concealing and revealing. The third movement - Menuetto: Allegretto – while seemingly shy, built on a falling melodic line subtly transformed into the oboe-violin tune of the trio section, is nevertheless large for its genre. It gives us the sense that Mozart knew that this symphony would ultimately have great import. Nowhere is the otherworldly quality of the Jupiter as evident as in the last movement – Molto Allegro – the “crown” of the entire symphony. This SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Program Notes Continued... finale is a stroke of pure genius: here Mozart brings all full circle in a sonata form Allegro cast in a brilliant style whose scope, variety, and contrapuntal inventiveness is impressive. Opening with a serene violin melody - previously made use of in two masses and a symphony – he then takes this theme as the subject of a five-voice fugue. This magnificent movement is an example of the ars combinatoria, the process of finding the maximum number of different arrangements possible with a set of musical figures. In the coda, five of the movement’s six principal motives are gradually overlaid so that all five are sounding at once. Beyond that, over the span of twenty measures the counterpoint is inverted five times, allowing each of the five string groups (first violins, second violins, violas, cellos, and basses) to carry a different motive in succession. The result is dazzling and takes one’s breath away! Some rightfully claim that Mozart never surpassed this movement. The musicologist Eric Blom makes the case: “There is mystery in this music not to be solved by analysis or criticism, and perhaps only just to be apprehended by the imagination. We can understand the utter simplicity; we can also, with effort, comprehend the immense technical skill with which its elaborate fabric is woven; what remains forever a riddle is how any human being could manage to combine these two opposites into such a perfectly balanced work of art.” Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 stands at the pinnacle of 18th-century orchestral art. While some dismiss the Jupiter sobriquet as limiting and misleading, it nevertheless does seem fitting. The story goes that a London publisher nicknamed it such because of its “loftiness of ideas and nobility of treatment.” The meaning and the appropriateness of the nickname are clear. This is a creation that seems to have come from a celestial realm and is a godlike image in music.

BSO Guilds “Besides raising funds, the most important aspects of the Guilds are to be a resource to create continued good will and a positive image for the orchestra and its subscribers.” ~Carole Gatto, South Guild President The Brevard Symphony Orchestra Guilds - North and South - together comprise a volunteer support organization which serves to promote, sustain and assist the orchestra in every way possible. The approximately 300 members are committed to increasing public awareness of the orchestra’s activities, the quality of its performances and the service it renders the community. The Guild’s activities are focused on these major areas: FUNDRAISING: The Guilds contribute a substantial portion of the orchestra’s annual operating budget, through a variety of fundraising projects throughout the year. They also furnish essential personnel for major fundraisers undertaken by the Board of Directors. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: The Guilds play a major role in the annual season ticket campaign. CONCERT ASSISTANCE: The Guilds share responsibility for providing refreshments for orchestra rehearsals, and for hosting receptions for musicians and audiences. New members are accepted at any time. GENERAL INFORMATION Join the BSO’s Email List: Stay updated on upcoming concerts, events and special offers, by registering to receive our e-newsletters. Sign up online at BrevardSymphony.com or by calling the BSO office at 321.242.2024. Single Tickets: Are currently on sale through the King Center Box Office. They may be purchased in person, by telephone (321) 242-2219 or online at BrevardSymphony.com. Single tickets may also be available at the King Center Box Office two hours prior to the concert. Teachers and Active Military: Teachers and active military receive a 50% discount on all subscription and single tickets for series concerts (Areas 2 & 3 only). Teachers are defined as any person instructing, full time, in a learning institution (elementary, secondary or college). A military or educational ID is required. College Students: Full time students enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution can stay “tuned in” on Facebook and Twitter for special same concert day announcements for $10 Same-Day Rush Tickets. Student I.D. is required and a small handling fee will apply. Tickets must be purchased at the box office window of the King Center. Seating will be best available. Limit two (2) per person with valid I.D. Concert Club: Students in grades 4 through 12 are eligible to join for FREE. Benefits include: Email Newsletters; Invitation to attend a BSO Open Rehearsals and option to buy subscription concert tickets for member and a guest for $6.00 each in area three or can purchase two season tickets in areas two or three for only $5 per concert per person. Excludes April 30, 2016 performance. Call the BSO office for details. Group Sales: Groups of 20 or more members are invited to attend single series concerts at a special rate. Call the BSO Business Office for further details. Ticket Refunds and Exchanges: Sorry, no cash refunds or exchanges on single tickets. Exchanges only available to current BSO subscribers. Unused Tickets: Last minute conflicts sometimes occur, but your tickets should not go to waste. They make a perfect gift to a fellow music-lover. Another alternative is to return your tickets, seven (7) business days prior, to the BSO. If resold, your purchase price will be considered a tax-deductible contribution for which you will receive a receipt following the performance. Resale of tickets will be more likely the further in advance they are returned. Lost Tickets: If you misplace your tickets, call the BSO Office and a location pass for your seat will be issued and can be picked up at the King Center Box Office the night of the performance. Special Seating: The Brevard Symphony Orchestra encourages attendance by physically disabled patrons. For special seating information, please call the BSO Business Office.
