[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season. Our programming for each concert highlights music from specific countries and regions, affording us the opportunity to take a musical trip around the world. We’ll enjoy picturesque music from America, passionate music from Russia, a delightful program of intimate repertoire from France, a colorful and fiery program of music from Spain and great masterworks from Germany and Austria. Our annual POPS Concert features favorite selections from Hollywood’s Golden Age as well as recent blockbusters. Our roster of guest artists includes audience favorites such as pianist Terrence Wilson and acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira along with artists making their BSO debut including cellist Cicely Parnas and international guitar sensation Pablo Villegas. Across the season, we’ll hear beloved favorites from history’s greatest composers: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Bizet, Ravel, Debussy and many more. And because there’s more to the BSO than Bach and Beethoven, we’re excited to share a VERY special event we’ve added to our season at the beginning of June as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of perhaps the greatest album ever – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in a special collaboration with Classic Albums Live and the King Center!

[ FROM THE ] BOARD CHAIR “The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us – fostering creativity, goodness and beauty. They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.” ~ Randy Cohen, ARTSBlog, April 2011 I have long been a true believer in the beauty of music, particularly symphonic music. For me, a symphonic piece is a personal journey into the life and emotions of the composer. With each note, my mind’s eye paints a picture – my vision of what the composer wanted us to “see” and hear. Our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, has again shown inspiration in the programming for our 2016-17 concert series. And, I continue to be amazed at the talent of our musicians. When they step on that stage, you are witness to their hard work and dedication. I invite you to join us on this musical journey, to enjoy the beauty and richness of the music. Bring a friend. [ NOTES ] Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Polonaise from Eugene Onegin “If ever music was written with sincere passion, with love for the story and the characters in it, it is the music for Onegin,” wrote Tchaikovsky in January 1878. “I trembled . . . with inexpressible delight while writing it.” The great writers, including Shakespeare, Dante, Byron, and his own countryman, Alexander Pushkin, often inspired Tchaikovsky. Pushkin, in particular, spoke to the composer leading to librettos for Mazeppa, The Queen of Spades, and Eugene Onegin. Set in Russia during the 1820s, Onegin contrasts the title character – an arrogant, self-absorbed, and jaded young man – with an innocent and pure country girl who pours out her passion and dreams only to have Onegin toss them away the very next day. Years later, Onegin returns to find that Tatyana has matured into a beautiful, elegant, and cultured lady and is now married to the older Prince Gremin. Onegin falls in love with her and in an ironic turn declares his newfound feelings to Tatyana. While admitting she still loves him, Tatyana remains loyal and steadfast to her husband and the opera concludes with her sending the crestfallen Onegin away.

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 2 - Russian Masters
The Polonaise sets the scene for the opera’s third and final act. The location is the grand and opulent mansion of Prince Gremin in St. Petersburg. Elegant and regal, Tchaikovsky’s music provides the tone for the magnificent ball at which the dramatic confrontation will unfold.
Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 Moderato Adagio sostenuto Allegro scherzando Following the 1897 premiere in St. Petersburg of Rachmaninov’s First Symphony, fellow Russian composer Cesar Cui fumed, “If there’s a conservatory in Hell, Rachmaninov would gain first prize for this symphony.” Rimsky-Korsakov coolly remarked, “Forgive me, but I do not find this music at all agreeable.” Morbidly self-critical and hypersensitive, the complete and utter failure of the premiere plunged Rachmaninov into a depression and mental crisis so profound that it literally incapacitated him for a period of over two years. The composer wallowed in self-doubt and even added his voice to the dismal chorus: “There are serious illnesses and deadly blows from fate which entirely change a man’s character. This was the effect of my own symphony upon myself.” So bleak was his outlook that he seemed tempted to pack it in as a composer: “When the indescribable torture of this performance had at last come to an end, I was a different man.” A matter of just a few years later, Rachmaninov wrote what may be the most popular concerto of all time. How a man once mired in what seemed an inextricable block burst free with such an achievement is a fascinating story. In 1900, Rachmaninov turned to the services of Dr. Nikolai Dahl, a specialist in internal medicine who excelled in treating his patients with hypnosis and autosuggestion. Knowing that Rachmaninov’s fondest fantasy was to write a piano concerto, Dr. Dahl began daily therapy sessions and with patience and persistence succeeded in leading the composer down that road. As Rachmaninov took light naps in his study, the physician softly uttered the same words over and over again: “You will begin to write your concerto. You will work with great facility. The concerto will be of excellent quality.” After months of Dr. Dahl’s highly effective treatments, the composer did write again, completing in 1901 the beloved Piano Concerto No. 2. Dedicated to Dr. Dahl, the work was first performed in Moscow in November of that same year with the composer as soloist. In its progression from somber introspection – with moments of powerful tragedy along the way – to triumphant celebration, the concerto certainly seems to get at the composer’s journey out of depression. Alternating between melancholy tenderness, longing, suffering, and jubilation, running throughout is a lyrical richness that must account for the work’s enduring popularity. The concerto is full and lush, with its contrasting movements demonstrating how brilliantly Rachmaninov understood the twentieth century piano’s capacity for a wide palette of tonal color. The orchestration is masterful and thrilling, showing that Rachmaninoff conceived a piano concerto as essentially a symphony guided or led by the piano soloist. Composed with such technical, artistic, and intellectual power and skill, imbued with an unsurpassed wealth of warm, surging, and emotional melodies – take, for example, the 1946 song hit “Full Moon and Empty Arms” drawn from the final movement – this concerto is often cited as the ultimate Romantic piano concerto. Portrait of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov by Valentin Serov, 1898
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Scheherazade, Symphonic Suite, Op. 35 The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship – Largo e maestoso The Story of the Kalandar Prince – Lento The Young Prince and the Young Princess – Andante quasi allegretto Festival at Baghdad – The Sea – The Shipwreck – Allegro molto Numerous 19th-century artists fell under the spell of the Orient: it was imagined as an enchanted realm, made up of dreams, of color and warmth, and of exotic adventure and passionate sensuality. Orientalism as it was treated in Russian music, as in other arts and in other countries had little to do with reality. Rather, it was mainly an artistic convention partly inspired by a nostalgic yearning for a remote ideal. However, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s relationship with the Far East was by comparison to his contemporaries deeper and more tangible. When his friend Alexander Borodin had died in 1887, the composer took it upon himself to complete the in-disarray score to the magnum opus opera Prince Igor. With the opera’s exotic setting among the Tartar tribes in 12th-century central Asia, Rimsky’s work on Prince Igor likely served as early impetus to undertake his own embodiment of VIII
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 2 - Russian Masters
musical Orientalism. Moreover, serving as a lieutenant in the Czarist navy and later as inspector of naval bands, Rimsky had many an occasion to travel far across the empire and to experience much of the world beyond. With some of his finest work already behind him, following in the footsteps of his many comrades who were drawn to the intrigue, wondrous sights, striking beauty, and heroic deeds of the near East, the composer was inspired in 1888 to write what would become his most celebrated and popular piece – Scheherazade. Rimsky-Korsakov drew direct inspiration for Scheherazade from the collection of imaginative fairy tales known as The Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights. These millennium-old stories were brought together from Egypt, Persia and India, and were translated into French and published in many installments by Antoine Galland beginning in 1704. Tapping into the listener’s memory of the ancient legends of The Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov prefaced the score of Scheherazade with these words: “The Sultan of Schahriar, persuaded of the falseness and faithlessness of women, has sworn to put to death each one of his wives after the first night. But the Sultana Scheherazade saved her life by interesting him in tales that she told him during one thousand and one nights. Driven by curiosity, the Sultan put off his wife’s execution from day to day, and at last gave up his bloody plan. “Many marvels were told the Sultan by Sultana Scheherazade. For her stories the Sultana borrowed from the poets their verses, from folk songs the words, and she strung together fairy tales and adventures.” In his autobiography My Musical Life, Rimsky expanded on the music: “The unifying thread consists of the brief introductions to Movements I, II, and IV and the intermezzo in Movement III, written for solo violin, and delineating Scheherazade herself telling her wondrous tales to the stern Sultan. “In vain do people seek in my suite leading motifs linked always and unvaryingly with the same poetic ideas and conceptions. On the contrary, in the majority of cases, all these seeming leading motifs are nothing but purely musical material or the given motifs for symphonic development. “All I desire is that the listener … should carry away the impression that it is beyond doubt an Oriental narrative … and not merely four pieces played one after the other and composed on the basis of themes common to all four movements.” Rimsky-Korsakov did provide us with these subtitles to stimulate our imagination: (I) “The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship”; (II) “The Tale of the Kalandar Prince”; (III) “The Young Prince and Princess”; and (IV) “Festival at Baghdad and Shipwreck on the Rock Surmounted by the Bronze Warrior.” Beyond these titles, however, the composer provides us with no specific story line as if to provide us with the freedom to fill in the blanks. But what we do draw is within a masterfully constructed context of atmospheric sensuality informed by exquisite moments of poetic beauty and at times veritable orgies of blazing orchestral color. In the words of Donald N. Ferguson, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade conjures: “Ecstasies of imaginatively fulfilled desire: visions of celestial luxury engendered in the hashish-fevered mind of some squalid dreamer in the market place of Baghdad or Teheran – such are the tales of Scheherazade and the Arabian nights.”
