[ NOTES ] JEAN SIBELIUS (1865-1957)

Vales triste Jean Sibelius is the most widely acclaimed artist to have ever emerged from Finland. He is admired in America, England, Scandinavia and throughout the world as one of the great composers of the 20th century.

PROGRAM NOTES PROVIDED BY: David R. Glerum, Music Director WMFE-FM/NPR, Orlando, FL. (1990-2009) Music Director WXXI-FM/NPR, Rochester, N.Y. (1980-1990) VI

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 3

Over the years Sibelius amassed a considerable and impressive body of work and so became a legendary figure in his own lifetime. In the quarter century spanning 1899 to 1924, he produced seven magnificent symphonies; a Violin Concerto; a String Quartet (“Intimate Voices”) and other fine chamber compositions; several symphonic poems, including Pohjola’s Daughter, Night Ride and Sunrise, The Bard and The Oceanides; and a wide range of incidental music for the theater, including Kuolema, Pelleas and Melisande, Belshazzar’s Feast and The Tempest. After this incredibly productive period, ending with the bleak tone poem Tapiola in 1926, Sibelius wrote very little in his

final three decades. Why he fell steadfastly silent for such a long time, all the while perfectly able to create, remains one of the great-unanswered questions in music history. The eerie and haunting music of Sibelius’ Valse triste (or Sad Waltz) began life inauspiciously as the first of six pieces of incidental music written for the 1903 play Kuolema (Death). Conceived by his brother-in-law Arvid Järnfelt, the play never caught on and ended up a failure. However, it did spark Sibelius to write what would become one of his signature and most recognizable pieces. In 1904, he revised the music and presented it as Valse triste on a concert given in Helsinki on April 25th. The spellbinding effect of the music captivated the audience and the piece became enormously popular around the world. Had Sibelius not sold the rights for a mere 300 marks, the royalties would have made him a very wealthy man! In the context of the play, the music takes the form of a sad waltz, which accompanies a scene in which a dying mother awakens, and draped in her long white nightgown beckons a gathering of spectral guests to dance. The program notes provided for the original production complete the story: And now they appear, these strange visionary couples, turning and gliding to an unearthly waltz rhythm. The dying woman mingles with the dancers; she strives to make them look into her eyes, but the shadowy guests one and all avoid her glance. Then she seems to sink exhausted on her bed and the music breaks off. Presently she gathers all her strength and invokes the dance once more, with more energetic gestures than before. Back come the shadowy dancers, gyrating in a wild, mad rhythm. The weird gaiety reaches a climax; there is a knock at the door, which flies wide open. The mother utters a despairing cry, the spectral guests vanish; the music dies away. Death stands on the threshold. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)

Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor Allegro Adagio un poco mosso Rondo: Allegro ma non troppo For better or worse, Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto has almost always been known as the Emperor. Considering Beethoven’s “republican” principles and the circumstances around which the work was composed, the sobriquet is in some sense ironic. Beethoven wrote it in Vienna in 1809 while the city was besieged and for a time occupied by Napoleon’s armies. To avoid capture, Beethoven’s friend, pupil, and patron, the Archduke Rudolph – to whom the concerto was dedicated - along with the rest of the royal family and many of the composer’s close friends, were forced to flee the city. Beethoven himself lived in lodgings in the midst of the fighting and the noise and commotion of battle interfered with his work on the concerto. At one point, hanging on to the final vestiges of his hearing and traumatized by the din of battle, Beethoven retreated to the refuge of his brother Caspar’s house. When the bombardment came too close, he would spend hours in the basement covering his head with pillows in an attempt to protect his sensitive ears from the clamor. Beethoven expressed his agitation and anxiety in a letter this way: “We have been suffering misery in a most concentrated form. Let me tell you I have produced very little coherent work, at most a fragment here and there. The whole course of events has in my case affected both body and soul…. The existence I had built up only a short time ago rests on shaky foundations…. What a destructive, disorderly life I see and hear around me: nothing but drums, cannons, and human misery in every form.” But during Napoleon’s occupation Beethoven also exhibited defiance. The story goes that seated in his favorite coffee house one day, he let a passing French officer have it: “If I were a general and knew as much about strategy as I the composer know about counterpoint,” he shouted shaking his fist, “I would give you something to do!” Obviously, this was a man who VIII

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 3

was bubbling over with resentment for the “Emperor.” How could Beethoven not remember how his early admiration prompted him to dedicate the Eroica Symphony to Napoleon? He had seen the French general as a revolutionary leader and liberator but became repulsed when it was evident that Napoleon used his strength for destruction and personal gain. Beethoven must have thought back to when he had angrily ripped the dedication page from the score of the Eroica when the power hungry “man of the people” had proclaimed himself “Emperor” in 1804. Tumbling from the composer’s esteem, Beethoven raged: “This man will trample the rights of men underfoot to indulge his ambition and become a greater tyrant than any other.” Some may argue that the Piano Concerto No. 5 voices Beethoven’s response to the tide of Napoleon’s conquest across Europe. After all, scrawled on the first page of the Adagio is the bitter remark “Austria rewards Napoleon.” Nevertheless, it would fly in the face of all we know about Beethoven if we were to conjecture anything other than the composer’s utter disgust and resentment if he were to have ever known that his Fifth Piano Concerto would one day be known as the Emperor. How did the work get its nickname? No one knows for certain. One widely accepted theory is that an early publisher or pianist thought it an appropriate term to convey the concerto’s grand scale and quintessential splendor, i.e., the work is “an Emperor among concertos.” Another possibility is the purported exclamation during the premiere by a French officer at one especially noble passage,“C’est l’Empereur!” And then there is the fascinating explanation given by Anton Schindler, devoted friend and one of the composer’s first biographers. Apparently, the Viennese premiere took place at a celebration of the Emperor’s birthday. Since the party at which the premiere occurred (sponsored by the Noble Ladies for Charity for Fostering the Good and Useful!) was ordered by the French conquerors, what could be more natural than to introduce this new concerto as the Emperor? An interesting possibility… Despite the many distractions of 1809, Beethoven somehow managed to complete his Piano Concerto No. 5 that same year. It took two years, though, before the work received its premiere in Leipzig late in 1811. The Viennese premiere occurred in early 1812. Even though Beethoven was only 39 SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

years old when he wrote the Emperor and some 18 years of life remained ahead of him, this was to be his last concerto. Therefore, the Emperor serves as the culmination of Beethoven’s work in the concerto form. And what a culmination it is! It is the largest in scale of all Beethoven’s concertos and can be argued to be the Classical concerto at its most noble. The opening Allegro is one of the largest sonata-form movements Beethoven ever penned. It opens majestically with the orchestra playing a series of broad chords, the piano extending each of these with wide arpeggios in an improvisatory and rhapsodic manner. The piano then steps aside and the orchestra unfolds the two main themes in a magnificent exposition. Unlike most Classical concertos where the listener waits for the dramatic entrance of the soloist, in the Emperor we are filled with suspense as to when the piano makes its return appearance. After a transition theme, the soloist is brought back in for a second exposition with his version of the thematic material. An impressive development section follows with the piano tossing off brilliant and elaborate figurations against fragments of melody in the orchestra. Following a mighty crescendo there is a sustained chord and then a pause signaling the usual cadenza, but here Beethoven innovates. Instead of the impromptu virtuosic display customarily expected by audiences of the time, he says “no” and instructs the pianist to stick to a limited written-out solo passage that begins the coda. By restricting the cadenza accordingly, Beethoven maintains control over the dramatic and poetic aspects of his work. From this point forward virtually all composers would follow Beethoven’s lead and handle cadenzas in this way. Twenty minutes later and sated with majesty, we’re treated to an understated Adagio of transcendent beauty. The movement begins with a serene, hymn like melody introduced by the strings, with the violins muted. A series of ascending trills leads to the piano’s introspective variations on the chorale melody. Against plucked strings in the orchestra, the piano sings the melody with slight embellishment; the effect is magical and time seems to stand still. Measures before the movement’s end, the piano whispers a preview of the chief subject of the final movement. Without break, we are suddenly hurled into an exuberant and good-humored Rondo. Especially thrilling is the interplay in the coda between the kettledrums and the piano. A cascading flow of notes brings the concerto to a spirited and triumphant finish. X

FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847)

Symphony No. 3, Scottish Andante con moto – Allegro un poco agitato Vivace non troppo Adagio cantabile Allegro vivacissimo – Allegro maestoso assai “Bach reborn.” – Franz Liszt “The Mozart of the nineteenth century.” - Robert Schumann “A romantic who felt at ease within the mold of classicism.” – Pablo Casals Although these accolades may seem hyperbolic, they in fact are not. Phenomenal as Bach, precocious as Mozart, and blessed with passion and grace, all three assessments accurately point to the immense genius of Mendelssohn. The gods seemed to smile upon him. Goethe called him a “heavenly, precious boy” and Heine proclaimed him a “musical miracle.” SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

XI

Compared to all composer prodigies, it is difficult not to pronounce Mendelssohn as the most astonishing. Of course, Mozart comes immediately to everyone’s mind and it is true that over the course of his life he did achieve more and reach higher. But in terms of youthful genius, not even Mozart surpassed or often equaled Mendelssohn in assurance or individuality. Even the legions of us who revere Mozart would be hard pressed to offer up an example of pre-adulthood genius to compare with the sublime Octet for Strings, written at the tender age of sixteen. And what about the nothing short of miraculous Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream? So natural was that masterpiece’s creation that Mendelssohn casually remarked that he was looking forward to “dreaming” it in the family’s garden. Surely, looking only at those two comets drives home the fact that Western music has never seen a childhood genius such as Mendelssohn. FShortly after turning twenty, Mendelssohn embarked on a walking tour of Scotland with his friend, the poet Carl Klingemann. The experiences of the trip bowled Mendelssohn over and made indelible and lasting impressions. Mendelssohn once wrote, “It is in pictures, ruins and natural surroundings that I find the most music.” By traveling to Scotland, he certainly chose the right place. The eerily wild and beautiful Hebrides Islands off the rugged west coast inspired The Hebrides Overture; and his amazement at Mary Queen of Scots’ Holyrood Castle eventually gave rise to his Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish.” In July of 1829, Mendelssohn penned a letter relating the experiences of his first day in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. He wrote: “Everything here looks so stern and robust, half enveloped in a haze of smoke or fog. Many Highlanders came in costume from church victoriously leading their sweethearts in their Sunday attire and casting magnificent and important looks over the world; with long, red beards, tartan plaids, bonnets and feathers and naked knees and their bagpipes in their hands, they passed along by the half-ruined gray castle on the meadow where Mary Stuart lived in splendor.” A few days down the road, he described his visit to Mary’s castle, Holyrood: In the evening twilight we went today to the palace where Mary lived and loved. A little room is shown there with a winding staircase leading up to the door. This is the staircase the murderers ascended, and, finding Rizzio [Mary’s Italian advisor and, probably, lover, whom the XII

Scots mistrusted] … drew him out; about three chambers away is a small corner where they killed him. The chapel close to it is now roofless, grass and ivy grow there, and at the broken altar Mary was crowned Queen of England. Everything around is broken and moldering and the bright sky shines in. I believe I have found today in that old chapel the beginning of my Scottish symphony.” Notwithstanding this detailed and evocative description of Mendelssohn’s impressions of Scotland, it would be a mistake to reduce the Scottish Symphony to a tonal travelogue. Nowhere within does it quote indigenous folk songs, imitate bagpipes, make use of Scotch snap rhythms or dances, etc. Rather, it digs deeper in that it draws from the composer’s deep sensibility and profound melancholy elicited from his emotional reaction as a young man to the beautiful rugged Scottish landscape and long rich history. As Beethoven said of his Pastoral Symphony, the music is “more of feeling than of painting.” Even though numbered the Third, the Scottish is actually the last symphony composed since it wasn’t completed until 1842. It was published, however, before the No. 4, Italian, and the No. 5, Reformation. It is cast in the traditional four movements, but Mendelssohn was clear in directing that it should be performed continuously without pauses for applause. As the composer instructed in the original edition of the score, “The several movements of this symphony must follow each other immediately and not be separated by the usual pauses” – but each of the movements comes to a cadence on its own tonic chord.

LIVE CONCERTS ARE TRULY MAGICAL EXPERIENCES... Just ask the over 250,000 students who have attended our annual Children’s Concert over the years. Held each February, over the course of several performances, our Children’s Concert gives local fifth graders an opportunity to experience a live orchestra performance. For many, these performances are also their first visit to the King Center for the Performing Arts. For over 30 years, we have partnered with Brevard County Public Schools, to offer our Children’s Concert to local students. Through support received from local foundations and businesses, we have been able to keep our performances free for all public school fifth graders. A study guide is developed for teachers which integrates all learning aspects of a symphony performance from biographies of the composers to seating within the orchestra, performance etiquette and much more. All this information is blended, with musical examples, into class lesson plans. This allows students time, in advance of the concert, to learn about what they will soon be enjoying, therefore enhancing their learning experience. At the Brevard Symphony, we recognize how integral arts education is to our community and we are pleased to offer a variety of programs for both students and teachers. Not only do these performances create lasting musical memories, they also prove that we hear symphonic music every day. On television, on radio, at the movies, music stirs our emotions and creates musical memories to last a lifetime! SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS: Brevard County School Board; Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs; Brevard County Commissioners through the Brevard Cultural Alliance; Don Hendrick; Kristensen Foundation; Community Foundation for Brevard; Carl & Joann Bottcher; Northrop Grumman; Bristol-Hansen Foundation; and all our #GivingTuesday Facebook Friends BUSSING SPONSORS: Rockwell Collins & The Brevard Schools Foundation We hope you join us in supporting these amazing performances!
