[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season. Our programming for each concert highlights music from specific countries and regions, affording us the opportunity to take a musical trip around the world. We’ll enjoy picturesque music from America, passionate music from Russia, a delightful program of intimate repertoire from France, a colorful and fiery program of music from Spain and great masterworks from Germany and Austria. Our annual POPS Concert features favorite selections from Hollywood’s Golden Age as well as recent blockbusters. Our roster of guest artists includes audience favorites such as pianist Terrence Wilson and acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira along with artists making their BSO debut including cellist Cicely Parnas and international guitar sensation Pablo Villegas. Across the season, we’ll hear beloved favorites from history’s greatest composers: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Bizet, Ravel, Debussy and many more. And because there’s more to the BSO than Bach and Beethoven, we’re excited to share a VERY special event we’ve added to our season at the beginning of June as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of perhaps the greatest album ever – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in a special collaboration with Classic Albums Live and the King Center!

[ FROM THE ] BOARD CHAIR “The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us – fostering creativity, goodness and beauty. They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.” ~ Randy Cohen, ARTSBlog, April 2011 I have long been a true believer in the beauty of music, particularly symphonic music. For me, a symphonic piece is a personal journey into the life and emotions of the composer. With each note, my mind’s eye paints a picture – my vision of what the composer wanted us to “see” and hear. Our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, has again shown inspiration in the programming for our 2016-17 concert series. And, I continue to be amazed at the talent of our musicians. When they step on that stage, you are witness to their hard work and dedication. I invite you to join us on this musical journey, to enjoy the beauty and richness of the music. Bring a friend. In 2012, Ms. Parnas made her Carnegie Hall concerto debut, performing the Saint-Saëns Concerto with the New York String Orchestra under the baton of Jaime Laredo. The New York Times raved: “Cicely Parnas, a fast-rising young cellist, was the impressive soloist in a rhapsodic performance.” She toured France performing the Saint-Saëns Concerto with L’Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire. Other international appearances include her participation in the 2013 Young Concert Artists Festivals in Tokyo and Beijing. No stranger to the limelight, Ms. Parnas was named an inaugural Young Artist in Residence on NPR’s Performance Today in 2011, where she was featured in five broadcasts and an American Public Media video spotlight. Winner of the 2012 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, she was presented last season in debuts at Merkin Concert Hall and the Kennedy Center to rave reviews. [ NOTES ] Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) Pavane “Perhaps no other composer has ever been so generally ignored outside his own country, while at the same time enjoying an unquestionably eminent reputation at home.” This assessment made by Aaron Copland, written in 1924, is even today an essentially accurate description of how Gabriel Fauré’s music is perceived in music history. Rising in France to Director of the Paris Conservatoire and venerated in his later years as the grand old man of French music, his star never rose quite so high abroad. When thinking about the great composers of the late-Romantic period, his name is not one of the first off our lips. It is human nature to be wowed by the grand gesture and size of, say a Mahler or a Wagner; the genius of Fauré, on the other hand, is to be found in the beauty, expressiveness, and intimacy of his music. Appreciated in this way, Fauré has to be held as one of the most inspired musicians of the last 150 years.
PROGRAM NOTES PROVIDED BY: David R. Glerum, Music Director WMFE-FM/NPR, Orlando, FL. (1990-2009) Music Director WXXI-FM/NPR, Rochester, N.Y. (1980-1990) VI
The Pavane appeared on the stage in 1919, when Fauré included it in a one-act divertissement for the Monte Carlo Opera entitled Masques et bergamasques. It is best known as a separate concert piece, charming audiences with its alluring and hauntingly beautiful melody and seductive harmonies. Its delicacy, restraint, and refreshing lack of bombast marked a deliberate contrast to the pomposity and pretense of the prevailing French academic style.
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 3 - The French Connection
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Cello Concerto No. 1 Camille Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1 came into existence as a result of the composer’s deep cultural pride in France’s rich musical history, which was very much in decline. The country’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was embarrassing and tore at its confidence. After the collapse of the Second Empire, France was unexpectedly taken down several notches as a European power and its cultural aspirations lowered accordingly. French serious music, most notably symphonic and orchestral music, entered lean times. French audiences compounded matters by insisting on a steady diet of light operas and operettas. In an effort to restore French music to its former status, Saint-Saëns helped found the Société Nationale de Musique (National Music Society). Under his leadership, the society championed the orchestral music of the country’s finest composers, including Debussy, Fauré, Franck, Ravel, Chausson, d’Indy, and Lalo. As his own contribution to the movement, Saint-Saëns contributed the first of his two cello concertos. It was written in 1872 and dedicated to August Tolbecque, the esteemed principal cellist of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. Tolbecque gave the premiere at the Conservatory on January 19, 1873. It was an immediate artistic and popular success, and has found a cherished place in the repertory ever since. Although hardly groundbreaking and relatively modest in scope, the Cello Concerto No. 1 is highly regarded by audiences, cellists, and composers alike. Many, including Shostakovich and Rachmaninov, considered the work to be one of the greatest of all cello concertos. Above all, the A Minor Concerto allows the cello to shine on every level. It’s an effective and superbly written work that explores the more intimate aspects of the cello, as well as its thrilling virtuosic capabilities. Musicologist Sir Donald Francis Tovey offers this praise: “Here, for once, is a violoncello concerto in which the solo instrument displays every register without the slightest difficulty in penetrating the orchestra.” Depending upon your approach, the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 can be viewed as either a one movement or three-movement work. The composer offers what seem to be three tempo/movement delineations: Allegro non troppo (1st mvt.); Allegretto con moto (2nd mvt.); Allegro non troppo (3rd mvt.). However, the three “sections” are tightly connected thematically and are played without pause. Considering Saint-Saëns history as an interpreter of Franz Liszt’s cyclic tone poems, it seems likely that Liszt’s novel idea of thematic transformation came to inform a greater continuity in some of his own works. Structurally, the concerto functions as one broad and varied sonata-allegro movement. The 1st movement consists of an exposition and development, followed by a contrasting minuet-like middle (2nd) movement, and ending with a recapitulation in the last movement. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON
VII
In the opening movement – Allegro non troppo – the cello enters after a single bold orchestra chord and states the germinal theme upon which the concerto is based. The theme traverses down through the cello’s range, and is marked by rising and falling triplet figurations. A quieter subsidiary subject is introduced, but the principal theme controls the movement. As the development seems to be leading to a recapitulation, almost imperceptibly the movement comes to an end and shifts to the middle movement, marked Allegretto con moto. Cast in three-four time and resembling a minuet, this section is introduced by muted strings and features a cadenza for the cellist. Fragments of the minuet theme unfold in various harmonies until the more vigorous Allegro tempo appears. The finale – Allegro non troppo – is ushered in with a reappearance of the triplet theme from the first movement. While Saint-Saëns primarily uses the finale as a recapitulation of earlier material, he chooses to end it with the introduction of new material for the cello. This movement is remarkable for the opportunities it affords the cellist to dazzle in virtuosic display, including, but not limited to: rapid scales, octaves, arpeggio flourishes, and a head-spinning lift into the tonal stratosphere of the cello’s perilous upper harmonics. Only the finest and most virtuosic cellists need apply!
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Le Tombeau de Couperin Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin was conceived as early as 1914 as a homage to not only Francois Couperin, but to eighteenth-century French music in general. It is a neoclassical masterpiece of instrumental virtuosity recalling and paying tribute to the sound and forms – the musical aesthetics – of a bygone era the composer always held dear. The clarity, logic, and elegance of the French Baroque represented for Ravel the heart of French civilization. Proud of his Gallic roots, the composer was protective of the French cultural heritage, which was being threatened by the outbreak of the First World War.
VIII
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 3 - The French Connection
Filled with patriotic zeal, Ravel did his best to fulfill his civic duty by volunteering for the French military air corps. He was turned down owing to his underweight stature and delicate health, but eventually saw action as a transport driver. However, he was eventually discharged in 1916 when he came down with dysentery and had to be hospitalized. Ravel’s convalescence in Paris was complicated by the sudden final illness and then death of his beloved mother. Coupled with his own failing health and mental anguish over the ravages of the War, his musical output was limited to little of any lasting value. Le Tombeau de Couperin was the only work of any real import to emerge from these difficult War years. Ravel picked up on his original intention to further and sustain the historic tradition of French culture, perhaps to help him through this time of near-hopelessness and despair. Le Tombeau gave him the means to express his appreciation for the sanity represented by the coherence and refinement of the French Baroque age. Composers of that era, Francois Couperin (1668-1733) among them, were accustomed to honoring in music recently deceased colleagues. They would pen a “tombeau,” or “tombstone,” and there is no doubt that Ravel was intensely aware of the association with the times. And so another profound layer of meaning was added to the work. When the first version was released as a piano suite in 1917, it was intended as a musical memorial with each of the six movements dedicated to a friend or acquaintance taken down by the War. Notwithstanding the heavy inspiration of the work, Le Tombeau was later scored for orchestra in 1919 and won popularity for its easy elegance and effervescent tone; it became irresistible as a tour de force of instrumental finesse. Ravel pulled from the piano suite the fugue and highly pianistic toccata, and happily decided on four catchy and lively dances. These include a bubbly “Prelude” with some dashing writing for the woodwinds, in particular the first oboist; a bittersweet and lilting “Forlane,” with swaying rhythms and adventuresome and piquant harmonies; a delicate and subdued “Menuet” with elegiac grace; and an energetic final “Rigaudon” – balanced with a stately middle section of decorative and melancholic beauty – and ending in notable boisterous high spirits. Donald N. Ferguson fittingly described Le Tombeau de Couperin: “This Suite is a garland of musical flowers, grown from 17th-century seed in a 20th-century hothouse.”
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Petite Suite Claude Debussy was one of the most important figures in the transition from late Romantic (the nineteenth century) into Modern (the twentieth) music. To some he is even seen as the founding spirit of twentieth century music. Pierre Boulez went so far as to say that in essence it began with the publication of Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Over the course of his career, Debussy created a body of works whose innovative treatment of sonority and imaginative approach to form, harmony, and texture paved the way for a new century of musical possibilities. Old forms such as symphonies, concertos, or overtures SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON
IX
gave way to “sketches” or “images” or “preludes.” And as he brought ambiguity to form, so did he treat harmony. Debussy said goodbye to the tonal center – the practice of feeling obliged to start in a particular key and therefore feeling the need to end in that same key, to satisfy the ear – and by so doing opened the door to a new way of looking at music. Of all Debussy’s works that have found a permanent home in the repertoire, the Petite Suite actually does not realize the revolutionary new voice that the composer was to bring to music; rather, it is an earlier work from student days that is more often than not a tip of the hat to his compatriots, including Fauré, Bizet, Delibes, and Chabrier. It was composed soon after Debussy completed the student chapter of his life, graduating from the Paris Conservatoire with the coveted Prix de Rome in 1884. Originally written in 1889 for piano four-hands, the Petite Suite preceded by over a decade the works that would come to define his more characteristic masterpieces, among them Prélude á l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) (1891-94), Nocturnes (1897-99), or the landmark opera, Pellés et Mélisande (1893-1902). Even taking the Petite Suite’s modest beginnings into account, the work is charming and entertaining, proving irresistible to audiences for well over a century. The version most often performed is the popular 1907 adaptation for orchestra by Debussy’s friend and colleague, Henri Büsser. It is that transcription the Brevard Symphony Orchestra will perform on today’s program. As part of a television interview given on the occasion of his hundredth birthday, Büsser remembered approaching the budding young genius with a proposition: “Dear Debussy, wouldn’t you be so good as to give me the right, the permission to orchestrate your Petite Suite? I have the orchestration already in my head!’ “Oh!” he said to me, “you can’t know the joy you bring to me; with my whole heart I authorize you to do this!” In music as in poetry, art suggests but never directly states; it hints at reality while declining to clothe it in declarative or formal terms. Clearly, at the time Debussy wrote the youthful Petite Suite, he was aware of the Symbolist’s aesthetic, even while in the process of developing his signature compositional technique. However, we do get a glimpse in the first movement. En bateau (In a Boat) surely pays homage to Fauré, but the dreaminess and evocative musicality of the writing hints at the Debussy to come. A broad, calming, and languorous melody floats us in against a background of rippling waves of sixteenth notes and rolled chords. The second movement – Cortège (Retinue) – features humorous and insouciant music that is energetic, lighthearted, and playful. The last two movements of the Suite - Menuet and Ballet - create an atmosphere of frivolity, nostalgia, and revelry.
