Come and expand your repertoire of songs while developing guitar playing skills such as chord playing, strumming and picking techniques, rhythm reading and improvising. The course will also cover some basic aspects of general music theory.
On this course you will be taught the basics of acoustic guitar playing. There will be some group work but as the group size will be limited there will be opportunities for individual attention, enabling guitarists to consolidate their learning and progress at a comfortable pace.
Have you the wish to fulfil a long-held ambition to play the piano? If so then this is the course for you. Teaching will be in an informal workshop session where learners play at their own level and work closely with the tutor to gain a thorough understanding of both how to read music and develop their technique on the piano.

Telling stories is the language of being human. We are hard wired for story; think, talk, and make connections in story. Stories give us a framework to understand what’s going on; they help us solve problems, open our minds to new possibilities and imagine a different future. They help us develop empathy and may even alter our perception of reality… This course is all about writing stories which engage, inspire, and connect writer to reader on an emotional level – and most importantly, keep them reading to the end.
A sense of place is at the heart of much British poetry and nowhere is that more true than in the poetry of our region. From the work of Wordsworth and Norman Nicholson to the engraved stones of Meg Peacock’s poetry path, the exploration of a local habitation has been a rich and constant source of material. On this course students will have the opportunity to explore this poetry with the intention of writing their own.

Sat 21 Feb | Code FEB SL We will look at methods to express structure; rocks, mountains, city streets, buildings, roads and tracks. From free ink and wash methods to the use of rags, palette knives in paint and everything in between. With reference to work by artists in this field, you will produce several different pieces. We also learn a little of perspective principles, how to use or disregard them in your work.
Dry Point
Tutor: Iain Sloan
Retro Rehab – Chair Tutor: Rachel Cable
Sat 28 Feb | Code FEB D Sat 21 Mar | Code MAR RRC Fee: A £39 B £31.20 C £19.50 Fee: A £48 B £38.40 C £24 Explore the most direct and simple of the intaglio processes (incised images) in this one-day workshop. By working with a sharp point on a plastic or metal plate, drawings and textures can easily be scratched onto their surface, then inked and printed. Scratching the surface of the plate throws up a burr of material that catches the ink and prints lines with a soft and velvety quality. The workshop will explore some of the printed qualities dry point has to offer and how it can be combined with other intaglio techniques.
This course is ideal for beginners and will take you through all of the stages necessary for you to upcycle a dining chair; using modern upholstery and ‘shabby chic’ techniques to give it a retro or vintage look.
NEW! Copper Creations Tutor: Jo Dix
Sat 28 Mar | Code MAR CC Fee: A £37 B £29.60 C £18.50 Just in time for spring, why not have a fun day making your own flowers out of copper sheet and wire? No experience of metal working is required, just a desire to craft.
NEW! Expressive Use of Colour - An Approach
Linocutting
Sat 7 Mar | Code MAR EUC Fee: £30 No Concessions
A one day workshop where you will have the opportunity to design, cut and print your own linocuts. You will be able to print onto a range of materials and surfaces and explore the Chine-collé technique, where the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a support material.
Tutor: Jill Pemberton
This workshop hopes to encourage the progression from mark and line into shape, space and form using colour- not as an ‘addition’ to drawing but as cohesion of concepts within the work. It asks the artist to consider the ‘whole’ piece as it evolves- the hierarchy of emphasis and structure within an abstract composition.
Tutor: Iain Sloan Sat 28 Mar | Code MAR L Fee: A £39 B £31.20 C £19.50
“Teaching and assistance was excellent; fun and informative.”
