“By persistently remaining single, a man converts himself into a permanent public temptation. Men should be more careful.” – playwright Oscar Wilde I giggle as I am reminded of this quote while on our shoot for our feature on Style’s Most Eligible Bachelor. After all, there have certainly been harder days at the office… Here I am, surrounded by beautiful things – five of them single men – and I’m being given a peak into the mind of the ‘stag’. All in their 30s, our guys are bachelors – some out of resolute choice, others a tad unwillingly – by their own admission. Single for whatever reason, they are all stylish, sophisticated and ostensibly proud of their status, and they each chat openly about what it means to them. We tell their often amusing, sometimes touching and always interesting stories on pg 18. Meanwhile, our cover star this issue, though still unmarried, is hardly the female version of a bachelor (the distinctly less glam ‘spinster’). On the contrary, Justine Pergola is a stunning woman of the world, and on pg 11 she invites us into her gorgeous home so that we can experience a taste of the noble life, fall in love with her inimitable style and share her paths most travelled. And speaking of ‘inimitable style’, I am personally thrilled to welcome in the

cooler weather, which instantly means refreshing my wardrobe with a sense of more erudite winter glamour. Looking to the international catwalks for inspiration, we take a look at what’s really in for autumn (pg 39), as well as the global trends that we should all be rushing out to own a piece of (pg 27). Additionally, our gorgeous Face-Forward beauty look on pg 53 gives instant tips on how to update your make-up look in style. Finally all of our well-loved sections are back with a bang – from the recipes we can’t wait to tuck into, to the interior styling ideas that will give your home instant new season panache. So get stuck in, have fun with it and be inspired.

STYLE inTERVIEW

Chic, cosmopolitan, welltravelled and sophisticated. Here, baronessina Justine Pergola talks openly to Style on Sunday about her travels, noble connections and the passions that make her tick. As told to Jo Caruana Photography by briangrech Art direction by Stephen Azzopardi Hair by Antonio Mazzola Make-up by Simone Belli Jewellery by Bulgari, available at Sterling Diamonds

oBLE HERITAGE,

COSMOPOLITAN STYLE

Meeting us at her beautiful Naxxar home, within easy reach of Palazzo Parisio, Justine Pergola proves she is a dynamic force to be reckoned with. Welcoming, sharp and witty, she effortlessly blends her noble heritage with her modern, finely-tuned business sense. A woman who clearly knows what she wants, she is fiercely private about her personal life but very open about the many passions that fuel her. Here, in her own words, she tells her story.

STYLE inTERVIEW

“I had hoped to go into show business and follow in the footsteps of my father, Umberto, an Italian director and choreographer.”

Justine wears Bulgari Mediterranean Eden necklace with matching earrings in yellow gold with turquoise, amethyst and pavé diamonds

Being noble may be in my blood, but it’s not really something I think about on a daily basis. I’m proud of it, of course, and of my family history, but it certainly doesn’t dictate who I am. Our title can be traced back to Grandmaster de Vilhena, and it was passed down through the centuries via the family’s eldest daughter – from my

12

grandmother to my mother, the current Baroness of Tabria, and eventually to me. It’s an honour, but I don’t believe that it makes me any different to anyone else. Nevertheless, I do feel privileged to lead the lifestyle that I do. I love to go away often, because travelling is a huge passion of mine, and I find it important for work; both worlds are completely interlinked.

I am constantly on the look out for new things and ideas to bring to Malta or incorporate into my home or the palazzo. Having grown up in Italy, I absolutely love spending time there. This summer I spent a couple of weeks in the north, with a stop in Monte Carlo just for fun. It’s a totally plastic place and exactly what you would expect – everyone there is incredibly beautiful and there isn’t even a blade of grass out of place anywhere. I felt totally underdressed the whole time, but absolutely loved it all the same; it was very exciting! After that, I spent a few weeks on the Jupju, our family boat. As always we had a wonderful relaxing time as it was just some close friends, our dogs and my parents, Muffy and Umberto. We travelled to some of my favourite coastal spots, too, including Positano, the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Tropea. Family time on holiday is very special to me because, as we work together, it’s rare when we’re here in Malta. Nevertheless, my mind keeps ticking on the whole time, and I’m always thinking of things I could be doing back at work.

STYLE inTERVIEW

Justine’s Style Notebook I love designers to reflect my generallyclassic style, but often appreciate a bohemian touch. My top choices would probably be Giorgio Armani for his no-fuss look and Alberta Ferretti because she’s a bit upmarket ‘boho’. Flavio Castellani is another upcoming designer I covet while, out of Italy, I like the styles of Burberry and Chanel. Although I have loads of them, I tend to spend more on bags than shoes. Louis Vuitton is my first love in this department, and I have been to the brand’s flagships stores in London, Paris and Rome. My next indulgence will be the large Louis Vuitton shopper with my initials engraved onto it. One thing I guess I have been collecting for years is every edition of Vogue and Elle magazines. I absolutely love the photographs and always carry the latest copies. My favourite place in the world is Positano, a tiny seaside village in Italy. I love its aura of unabashed simplicity. I have quite a sweet tooth and always make room for pudding. Hot chocolate pudding is my favourite, and the best one I’ve ever tasted was a moelleux au chocolat at L’Avenue Restaurant in Paris. Giving back is important to me and I help out whenever I can, especially animal charities. A few years ago I also worked at the Comunità di Sant Egidio in Rome, a soup kitchen for the homeless. Next, I hope to do some work for impoverished children.

Justine wears Bulgari Mediterranean Eden Necklace with matching earrings in white gold with amethyst, blue topaz and pavé diamonds

This time around my final stops were in Milan and Rome, both for work. I am very at home in Rome as it’s where I was schooled until I was 12. After that, I went to boarding school in England for four years, which was fantastic. I completed my studies at the École

14

Hôtelière de Lausanne, a top hotel management school in Switzerland. It was pretty tough but an incredible experience, and I loved meeting people from all over the world. Malta became home at the end of 2006, when I returned from Milan where I

had been working at the Bulgari Hotel. Mum decided that she wanted to go on this incredible adventure to transform Palazzo Parisio, so we decided to take over the running of it ourselves and launched into a business relationship together.

“Giving back is important to me and I help out whenever I can, especially animal charities.”

Justine wears Bulgari BZero1 necklace with matching ring and bangle in pink gold with black ceramic and Assioma watch in 18kt gold

I loved it from the start but I hadn’t always wanted to end up in hospitality. I had hoped to go into show business and follow in the footsteps of my father, an Italian director and choreographer. But, in the end, he wasn’t very keen on me going into the industry as he’d lived it for so long himself and knew what it was really like. So I spent a year wondering what to do before finding myself at the Hilton in Rome. I was completely inspired by the experience and immediately drawn to the industry. I guess it was helped by the fact I had grown up in an environment of meeting lots of people and entertaining, obviously through the circles that my parents moved in. It came very naturally to me. Developing a style for myself, and one

that takes me through the various aspects of my life, has also been a very organic process. To me it means striving to secure individuality and I don’t necessarily follow the trends. In fact, I often ignore them and prefer to wear classics that I know look chic and elegant. I’m also not pushy or garish. While, like all women, I do like to feel good and be seen, I would say that I am quite shy. I’m definitely more likely to stand at the back of an event than position myself in the front row. But shopping is certainly a passion! I love designers, but I’m just as comfortable hunting for bargains at the street markets of London, Rome and Milan. I’m also crazy about cosmetics – particularly lip-glosses; I have hundreds of them! I

definitely find it hard to say no, but I am trying to learn how to. It’s a pretty similar story with lingerie actually; it becomes something of a nightmare as once I’m in an underwear store, I’m in it for the long haul! I guess it is because I adore the whole process of getting ready, and I really do indulge in it. I love to cleanse and moisturise, and then to have my make-up done properly. I spend a lot of time and money on my skin, but it’s definitely both enjoyable and worth it. After all, in a work world that is so hectic and demanding, there’s nothing better than giving yourself the space you deserve. It’s important to me because it provides the time to look inside and reflect, which in turn gives me the inspiration for all the other aspects of my life.

Style’s Most Eligible Bachelors Suave, sexy, successful and sophisticated. Jo Caruana meets five of Malta’s most eligible single men to talk relationships, style and no-strings fun. Photography by briangrech. Art direction by Stephen Azzopardi. Shot on location at LEVEL TWENTYTWO - PORTOMASo.

STYLE In-DEPtH

Following his split from girlfriend Chelsea Davy, cheeky British royal Prince Harry was recently voted the UK’s most eligible bachelor. But what’s going on locally? All in the name of research, the Style team handpicked five of Malta’s most popular singletons to discover what it is that makes them tick about flying solo. David Serge, 30, is a company director and the director of photography at The Bigger Picture. He is also the Junior Chamber of Commerce Young Person of the Year for 2010, based on his voluntary work and on his achievements within the local film industry. David has been single for eight months. I’m not really a party person – I’d rather have a quiet hot chocolate. Clubbing has never been my thing, and I prefer to enjoy my fantastic group of friends in other settings, like at a wine bar or over dinner. My ideal girl would be a real sweetheart. One of the quotes I live by is: ‘You shouldn’t love a girl because she’s beautiful; she’s beautiful because you love her.’ I don’t think there’s a standard formula that a girl can use to impress me – life is all about connections. The stronger the connection, the better the potential for a real relationship. A great sense of humour is also crucial; I’m very sarcastic so it needs to be someone who will bounce off that well. I think it would be tough to date someone in the same industry as me. My job is my passion and my hobby, so it’s hard to draw a line between my work and personal life. It would be easier if my girlfriend were out of the circle. I would definitely like to find someone who shares my other passions though, such as nature and the outdoors. I love going for long walks and hikes, and my ideal date would probably involve both. If the girl in question made it through that, then several potential problems would already be eliminated. Style is very important to me and image says a lot about you. I used to be very relaxed about it all, but I tend to make more of an effort now. Much of my wardrobe includes shirts, jeans, scarfs and jackets. I like my watches and have a collection of a particular brand; I don’t like to be without one. That said, I’m pretty low maintenance. In five years time I would like to be married, hopefully with a baby on the way too! Most romantic gesture: I once took flowers to the place where an ex-girlfriend was staying. I’d wanted to ask her out for a while, but couldn’t work up the courage.

19

STYLE In-DEPtH

I ended up asking a guy from a nearby bar to take the flowers over to her, and then waited for her call. It worked out well in the end! I’d simply wanted to make her smile, and I certainly think I achieved that. Ideal celebrity date: Claire Forlani, one of the actresses in Meet Joe Black. She looks lovely, and exudes the sweetheart personality that I love. Her picture was on my desktop for a very long time. She’s the only celebrity to ever really capture my attention!

Energetic Fabio Spiteri, 37, is a vessel shift leader, swimming coach and triathlon enthusiast. He has been single for seven months. I don’t think I qualify as a floater; I’ve had four significant relationships over a period of 20 years. The longest was for nine years, and the shortest for one. My current status is determined by my present circumstances and by the fact that my life revolves around work, coaching, intense training for triathlons and Ironman competitions, as well as actively participating in raising my teenage son and caring for my sick father, along with my siblings. At the moment I choose to be single, allowing me a little freedom during my free time. I am attracted to looks of course, but a woman’s character and interests play a vital part in stimulating me emotionally.

Ultimately looks fade, whereas character defines someone long-term. My ideal date would involve a candlelit dinner, good food, great wine and interesting chat. I believe romance can be found everywhere, especially in nature, and Riviera Beach always brings out that side of me. Style is important, but so is comfort. I’d say I’m a pretty casual kind of guy. While expensive cars don’t really do it for me, cycling bikes do – mine cost over €5,000. Triathlons are pretty pricey! I think I’m still quite new to the local dating scene, but I haven’t found it difficult to meet people. Summer was great fun, so we’ll now have to see what winter has in store! Proudest achievement: Being dad to my son, Aidan, and representing Malta at several international competitions. Plus finishing my first ever Ironman race in just nine hours and 53 minutes. Turn offs: Women who wear too much make-up and who smoke. Ideal celebrity woman: Super sexy Kat Von D, of LA Ink fame.

Adrian Micallef, 32, is a dedicated interior designer who loves a good challenge. He’s been a bachelor for the past eight months. Over the last eight years I have been in two relationships. Now that I’m single,

I’m looking forward to meeting the right person. While I think it’s great to have someone to share your life with, I think it must be horrible to be in an unhappy relationship. In that respect, I would much rather be alone than tied down. When I look back on my life so far, I would definitely say that I’m proudest of the respect I have earned and the times when I have made a difference. My ideal woman would be simple, thoughtful and have a great sense of humour. Of course no one is perfect, but it’s the little things that make all the difference. When it comes to style I’m generally ruled by the occasion – I enjoy changing things up depending on what I think will look best or what is required. Meanwhile my must have accessory is a classy watch; I hate being without one. When I think about dating, I think about developing friendships, I don’t think it’s hard to do that here in Malta. Plus stylish women are everywhere, so it’s simply a case of being out and about with my friends in order to meet them. Most romantic gesture ever: Designing and building a jewellery box as a birthday present. Future plans: I’d definitely like to be settled down some time in the next five years.

21

STYLE In-DEPtH

Steve Schembri, 32, is a qualified IT consultant now working in property. His passions include playing basketball for the national team and travelling. He has been single for two-and-a-half years. I’d describe myself as very laid back and busy. I like to think that I am easy going and friendly, and I love being out with friends and meeting new people. I was in two long relationships in the past, one for three years and one for two. I guess I just haven’t met the right person since then. The first thing to attract me is always a great smile, but character wins me over more than anything. I enjoy fun, easy-going personalities, and am completely turned off by snobs or people who think too much of themselves. I would say that I am romantic, but only when I really like someone. When I was in a relationship I liked to organise surprises, like planning parties or giving presents. Overall, I am happy being a bachelor because I have the freedom to do whatever I want, whether that’s watching a movie or being out with friends. But it’s not all pluses. I live by myself so it does get lonely sometimes. Nevertheless, outside of work and basketball I don’t get much time to myself. When I do, I’m likely to spend it travelling; I’ve been to the States, Thailand and all over Europe, and am happy to adapt to what’s going on around me. Backpacking’s not really my thing, though; I prefer to be comfortable!

22

When it comes to my style it obviously depends on the situation. I dress a certain way for work, but am generally casual and sporty. As long as I am comfortable, anything goes. The Maltese dating world is pretty restrictive. I do find that age is a bit of a factor and I have dated younger girls recently. It’s fun, but it’s not going anywhere and I think I have different desires these days. As for my future plans, I hope to eventually settle down. If you’d asked me a few years back I’d have said I’d be married with kids by now because I love the family life. I certainly don’t plan on being a bachelor forever. Ideal date: It would probably have to be dinner or just a relaxed drink. That’s when the challenge comes in because an evening can either pass by in a flash or drag on for ages. It’s a chemistry thing. Ideal celebrity woman: It would have to be Natalie Portman; I think it’s her smile. She’s no Angelina Jolie but there’s definitely something about her!

Active and ambitious, Jeremy Spiteri, 35, is a business development manager for a leading electrical equipment distributor. He describes himself as adventurous, positive and very loyal. What does it mean to be a bachelor? It means the toilet seat remains in my favourite position at all times! Seriously, it means adjusting and making the best of things. I think it is important to care for yourself, be

optimistic and live happily. The best thing about the single life is the time you have for yourself and the things you want to do. The worst is that humans don’t seem to have been created to live alone. It’s important to have someone to share your day with, whether it’s good or bad. I also look forward to hopefully having children in the future, as so far I do feel that that element is missing from my life. I am attracted to confident women who lead a healthy, active lifestyle and who share my interests. A good sense of humour and adventure is also an absolute must. Her character, as well as the chemistry between us, outweigh any physical attributes. I like women who do not allow small imperfections to rule their lives. I’ll know when I meet her. To me style is all about getting it right, and I’d much rather spend money on a timeless classic than something bang on trend. I’d rather feel overdressed than not up to the occasion. There is just something about the t-shirt, bermuda and flip-flops brigade that I just don’t understand. So far, I’d say that life itself is my greatest achievement. I am fit, healthy and surrounded by fantastic friends. I look forward to planning every aspect of my future.

Best thing about being a bachelor: The sense of freedom. It allows for plenty of spontaneity and spur of the moment decisions. Turn offs: Snobby, materialistic women really don’t do it for me.

THE STYLE REPORT The new season items we covet for a life of style

Contemporary Controversy

If it’s a red carpet status statement you hope to make, then do it with a divorce ring. Celebrities, including DJ Yasmin Shahmir, have whipped off their wedding rings to herald their new singledom. elizabethgaltonstudio.com

Back to School

Want to rediscover the laws of learning? You need just the right bag. Dior is one of the houses that has introduced a completely new (and brilliantly serious) range. Statement MAKING

Colour Pop!

Whatever you do this season, don’t blend into the background. Colour is absolutely everywhere – mix it and block it, and certainly don’t match it. As seen on the catwalks of Michael Kors, Gucci and Alberta Ferretti, bold is beautiful this autumn. gucci.com

Style combines with street art at the hands of the uber-cool collaboration by luxury French brand Hermes and graffiti artist Kongo. It marks an exciting new move for Hermes, as it embraces the budding work of underground street art fashion. hermes.com

Nice & Toasty

As the winter chill approaches, ditch conventional cotton for a more stylish solution – cashmere underwear. Canadian brand Sartoria has crafted a delightful range of simple yet fashionable fare that looks great and feels even better. sartoria.ca

Make Mine a Mary Jane

As also seen on the catwalks of Fendi and Prada, the round-toed elegance of the classic Mary Jane shoe is back. This mock-croc pair is by Vivienne Westwood, with a striking lux look that brings you bang up-to-date. viviennewestwood.co.uk

Going for Gold

The style clan knows what makes the perfect tipple – high quality ingredients. Gran Patrón Platinum is the world’s finest platinum tequila, presented in a crystal bottle and velvet bag. It is triple distilled from the finest hand-selected blue agave, and blended to perfection, making it one of the most highly-prized spirits in the world. For the perfect cocktail, combine with Patrón Citrónge and lime juice in a highball glass, topped with Grand Marnier and ice. €84,000 was recently spent on one bottle of wine in London. The 200-year-old bottle of 1811 Chateau d’Yquem breaks the world record for the most expensive bottle ever sold. It was bought by former sommelier, Christian Vanneque.

An Auction in a League of its Own Jo Caruana discovers the charity auction turning heads on the local art scene. Photography by briangrech

Every art enthusiast out there will tell you that fine art can make a fine investment. With the world seemingly on the brink of another debilitating recession, getting a return on your investment isn’t easy – but it’s not impossible. “Investing in art offers so much more than a return on the money spent; it can benefit so many areas of your life as you live and appreciate it every day,” explains Dr Pascal Demajo, chairman of the Fine Arts Auction Committee, which is currently putting the final touches to the eagerly-awaited

auction due to take place on 1 December in aid of L-Istrina 2011 which this year will be aired on 26 December from Verdala Palace. The final sum collected will be presented to H.E. The President during L-Istrina. “I believe this auction to be in a league of its own locally,” he continues. “The sheer quality of the items on offer is incredible, and there is a inimitable mix of pieces, including ceramics, bronzes, oil paintings, water colours and more by both up-and-coming, as well as established artists.”

“Now I look forward to inviting those interested to my home in San Anton Palace, where together we will help to raise funds for this incredibly worthwhile cause.” – President George Abela

Originally held around 14 years ago, the event is now back by popular demand and has been held for the past three years. It is once again being organised under the patronage of H.E. Dr George Abela, President of Malta, who is eager to welcome the general public into his home for this very worthy cause. This time around, the highlight of the auction will doubtlessly be five paintings generously donated by the widows of some of Malta’s most highly-acclaimed artists. “The wives of the late Anton Agius, Antoine Camilleri, Victor Diacono, George Fenech and Frank Portelli all very kindly donated a piece of their husbands’ works from their own private collections. As enthusiasts well know, the value of a piece rises dramatically once an artist passes away, thus making these works of art all the more collectable because they are no longer available on the open market. In this way, these gracious donations are especially generous, and they will go a long way towards increasing the final sum of the amount raised for the MCCF,” says Dr Demajo. These five special pieces will be auctioned off among 50 items contributing to the full collection. Other artists involved include

Kenneth Zammit Tabona, Patrick Dalli, John Martin Borg, Antoine Camilleri Jnr, John Grima, Chris Saliba, Debbie Caruana Dingli, Andrew Micallef and Robert Hornyold-Strickland, among many others, both local and foreign. “As always we are thrilled to have such wonderful artists taking part, and we are very grateful to them. Those in the know will easily agree that this is probably the highest-calibre art auction to take place in Malta and we are very happy to have

a platform on which to celebrate these wonderful local masterpieces,” Dr Demajo adds. The auction process will kick off on 21 November, with the launch of an exhibition at The Palace in Valletta. At the end of the month all of the pieces will be transferred to San Anton Palace for the final event on 1 December, when senior auctioneer, Joseph Sammut of the Belgravia Auction Gallery, will oversee proceedings.

This year’s collection hopes to bring in another €45,000 at least “When I heard that the MCCF was asking widows to donate their husbands’ works of art I immediately said ‘yes’, knowing that Antoine would have done the same. “Since his death, many people have called to ask about purchasing one of my husband’s pieces, but I have always declined, preferring to hold on to them for my sons, daughters, nephews and grandchildren. However donating to such a wonderful cause is a completely different matter, and I am so glad to be part of it. I look forward to it being a great success!” – Tereza Camilleri – wife of the late Antoine Camilleri

STYLE LIVING Speaking about the event H.E. Dr George Abela, President of Malta, said: “This very prestigious auction is one of the many events that we hold in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund and in the run-up to L-Istrina. “I believe that art and charity go hand-in-hand, and this is a fine example of that. All of the artists involved have been extremely generous, as the emotions they expressed at the time of creating their pieces now continue to touch other lives. That is even more poignant at this auction because the public will be able to purchase items by artists who have sadly passed away, which I feel makes it completely unique. This shows exactly how art never stops giving, and how an artist’s generosity can keep on living.” The general public is invited to attend both the exhibition and the auction itself. Entrance to the actual auction event, inclusive of a champagne reception, is against a donation of €25 per person to the MCCF. Further information is available through San Anton Palace on 2122 6226, The Palace Valletta on 22053135 or on mccf.org.mt.

Style’s Top Dollar! The three most expensive paintings ever sold at auction… •

Pablo Picasso’s ‘Garcon a la Pipe’ (Boy with a Pipe) was sold in 2006 for just over $104 million, smashing all previous art auction sales right out of the water. It was sold in Sotheby's, one of the most highly-esteemed auction houses in New York.

At the same auction, another of Picasso’s works, ‘Dora Maar Au Chat’, was purchased by an anonymous Russian bidder for just over $95 million. It was previously valued at $50 million.

Gustav Klimt’s 1912 portrait of Adele Bloch-Baur II fetched almost $88 million at a Christie’s auction in 2006.

As enthusiasts well know, the value of a piece rises dramatically once an artist passes away, thus making these works of art all the more collectable.” – Dr Pascal Demajo

Above from left: A few of the several valuable paintings kindly donated by the artists: paintings by James Vella Clark entitled ‘The Annunciation’, an acrylic entitled ‘Tas-Silg, Marsaxlokk’ by Andrew Micallef, a nude in charcoal and watercolour by Patrick Dalli, another painting entitled ‘Big Deal’ by Marisa Attard, a watercolour by Kenneth Zammit Tabona entitled ‘Gradenza Interzjata’, an abstract by Philip Chircop and a bronze sculpture by Antoine P. Camilleri entitled ‘Girl on High Chair’.

busy lives The following are some common headache triggers you might want to avoid where practical: • Stress; • Physical fatigue; • Lack of sleep; • Certain foods, such as cheese, alcohol, chocolate or artificial sweeteners; • Extreme emotions, like anger or excitement; • Missed meals and irregular eating patterns. Soothe Tension To get you started try the following tips for keeping calm: • Try deep breathing to slow the heart rate, relax muscles and calm the mind; • Exercise burns stress as well as calories, boosting levels of serotonin, the body’s feelgood chemical; • Apply a hot flannel to your forehead or neck to help aid relaxation; • Getting a good night’s sleep. Body First These handy health tips will help your body go the distance so that your busy lifestyle doesn’t end up causing you unnecessary aches and pains. 1. If the shoe fits To avoid pain tomorrow, choose your shoes carefully today. For exercise, it’s a good idea to be professionally fitted with footwear designed to adequately support your feet. 2. Water works As well as keeping you hydrated (which can help to prevent headaches), water keeps the digestive system in good order and flushes out the waste products. 3. Eat good fats Fish oils are rich in beneficial oils known as omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish including tuna, salmon and sardines. Fish oils are even taken by people with arthritis. 4. Stretch it out Stretching exercises relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation. To de-stress at work, do some simple stretches at your desk during breaks.

When was the last time you switched off your mobile and curled up with a good book? Our lives have sped up dramatically over the past few decades. With more demands being placed on our time than ever before, we can easily miss out on much needed ‘me time’. Trying to juggle all the demands of a hectic life – from work and family commitments, to relationships and socialising can be a real headache. One in five of us experiences pain most days or even every day. Fortunately, much of the pain is at a level we can manage ourselves, sometimes with the help of medicines and advice from healthcare professionals such as pharmacists and doctors. Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache and unfortunately, they have a

tendency to spring up when we are at our busiest or during times when we are under pressure. Women are also more prone to this type of tensionrelated pain than men. Classic signs of a tension headache include a dull and constant ache, which affects both sides of the head, with tightening of the neck muscles. This is usually accompanied by a feeling of pressure behind the eyes. Tension is a big enemy in the hectic life of a person. It brings in a lot of stress related problems and can drain away a person’s energy. Additionally they can also take a toll on the health and also on efficiency at office, being irritated all the time. Stress levels increase during these headaches and therefore it is very important to get rid of these headaches as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, at times the above tips are not sufficient and you need something more to treat your headache. Panadol Extra contains an extra ingredient which acts to further help the effectiveness of paracetamol. It provides fast and effective relief of headaches and migraines and is also effective in treating other pains. Hit Pain Hard with Panadol Extra. Panadol Extra is a medicine. Always read the product leaflet and consult your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Celebrating wine: Procession of the Jurade of St Emilion held as part of the Harvest Festival

MADE IN ST EMILION Chancellor of the Jurade of St Emilion, MICHAEL TABONE, speaks to STYLE ON SUNDAY about his love of wine on his return from the St Emilion Harvest Festival, held annually on the third Sunday in September. Over 30 Maltese wine lovers travelled to St Emilion in France to participate in this historical and glamorous ritual.

You may like cars or you may be the kind of person who drives a car to simply get around. Two cars may be identical but for someone who is passionate about cars, the driving experience is a completely different matter altogether. The torque, road handling, agility – of course the brand – are all critical for a car lover. Wine isn’t too different. You may fall into the category of those who enjoy a glass of wine – opening a bottle just before dinner, filling any sort of glass to the brim and getting on with it. That makes you a wine drinker. But it doesn’t make you a wine lover. A wine lover is someone

59

STYLE LIVING

who is intrigued by the subject – a wine lover would want to know the origin of the wine, its producer, its vintage and why it tastes the way it does. This kind of wine drinker will always be in the minority but this minority is growing – certainly in Malta. One of the local champions of this category of people is Michael Tabone. Michael is a passionate wine lover who gets a genuine kick out of seeing others becoming involved in the subject and appreciating wine. Not many know the extent of his deep connections with St Emilion and its famous Jurade. Originally founded in 1199 by King John Lakland, the Jurade was revitalised in 1948 by the local community. Being the oldest wine fraternity in the world, the primary function of the Jurade is to promote the wines produced in its jurisdiction, but it is also the Jurade that proclaims the ‘judgment of the new wine’ in June and ‘the new harvest’ in the third week of September. Many important international dignitaries from the world of wine, arts, music, business, politics and the media have been intronised into

the fraternity. But Michael is not just any other member of the fraternity. As Chancellor, he has just returned from the town of St Emilion where he led a group of Maltese wine lovers to mark and celebrate – along with hundreds of others gathered from around the world – the harvest. “My first visit to St Emilion was back in 1990 when I was working in the catering industry in the UK. My wife and I went there on holiday and at the time I had already developed an interest in wine, and also in food, but I was not as yet directly involved in the world of wine. I returned to Malta from the UK in 1992, and brought over a relatively large amount of wine – about 400 bottles, thinking that it would last us a long time. But in a year or so we depleted our stocks. We then thought of bringing over some more wine, and selling it to friends. In those days, though, whenever I spoke about wine, people would look at me strangely. The turning point happened at Dolce Vita Restaurant when the then-owner asked me to teach his staff

STYLE LIVING

about wines. This marked the start of it all for me. Some time later, by coincidence, I met Julian Sammut (the former owner of Rubino) and he thought up the idea of establishing a wine club and organising wine classes... a concept that has really gained ground since.” The third week of September in St Emilion is indeed an important time for the town as it witnesses a highly intriguing ritual. The third Sunday of the month starts with the celebration of holy mass and people pray for a good harvest. It is followed by a procession of 1,000 wine lovers (who descend on the town from all corners of the globe), led by the Jurade, that ends at a UNESCO world heritage site – the Monolithic Church – a unique cathedral which was dug, not built, into the rock, and took around 300 years to complete. The cathedral hosts the Jurade’s annual intronisation ceremony – an invitation for the Jurade to honour the chosen few and ask them to join the community in celebrating wine. “Intronising people,” explains Michael, “is like inviting people to become honorary citizens of St Emilion. Dignitaries and wine lovers from around the world have been intronised over the years.” Michael explains that around 50 Maltese citizens have been intronised over the past decade, including President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and tenor Joseph Calleja, while this year The Sunday Times editor Steve Mallia joined the club.

Michael speaks of St Emilion with apparent emotion. “You cannot fully appreciate St Emilion,” stresses Michael, “unless you understand its architecture, its history. Many people think that the town is simply renowned for its wine. But it has been on the map for thousands of years as it was inhabited by prehistoric man, and the town holds artefacts dating back to 3000BC. In the 7th century, it drew crowds as a religious centre – that is when St Emilion (the saint) settled there, and some years later, its limestone, which is easily extracted, was its star attraction and stone extraction, first in caves, then in industrial quarries, became a big industry. In fact, beneath St Emilion lie 180km of quarries. Only in recent history, about 300 years ago, did St Emilion become famous for its wines. The quarries found a second purpose as they offered ideal sites to store and age wine. So it is its variegated history, with each period intrinsically linked with the other, that makes St Emilion such a special place.” Going back to this year’s Harvest Festival in St Emilion, Michael explains that once the intronisation ceremony was over, the group of Maltese people was invited to a lavish banquet in the mayor’s garden where some excellent wines were served. “Generally speaking, 12 wines were offered throughout the meal, three varieties per course. The wines were chosen carefully; from different categories and prices, and from all around St Emilion,” he enthuses.

AT A GLANCE:

The impressive St Emilion Cathedral where the annual intronisation ceremony is held

The discussion with Michael turned to the quality of recent vintages of St Emilion wines, and to the obvious question whether St Emilion wines are excessively expensive. As Chancellor of the Jurade, Michael defends his argument well. “It’s just a perception that St Emilion wines are very expensive or that one needs to spend excessively to buy a good bottle of St Emilion wine. Bordeaux produces about 10,000 different wines, 900 of which come from St Emilion. Out of these 10,000 perhaps 50 wines fall within the expensive category, let’s say above €100 for a bottle. But there are some excellent wines at affordable prices which can be bought from a retail outlet for €15 to €20. Within St Emilion, out of the 900 wines produced there, around 30 wines can be defined as ‘high range’ and therefore expensive.” But what makes St Emilion wines so special? Why is there such a demand – including from China and Asia – that is always pushing prices up? Michael explains that the town produces only 5 per cent of

64

The town of St Emilion is around 40 kilometres east of Bordeaux in South West France. This is a red wine region and like most Bordeaux wines, Saint Emilion wines are blended wines, made from four grape varieties, namely Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

Over the past years 50 Maltese citizens have been intronised and now form part of the Jurade of St Emilion. Michael Tabone is Chancellor of the fraternity.

It is estimated that, in Malta, over 18 million bottles of wine are consumed every year.

One of Michael Tabone’s favourite bottles of wine is a La Serre 1961.

Top brands – like Cheval Blanc, Petrus and Angelus – appreciate dramatically. A bottle of Petrus 1990 was sold in 1991 for €70. Today it costs over €3,500 per bottle.

In Malta, interest in wine is growing rapidly and the number of wine clubs has mushroomed – to date there are 15 active wine clubs in Malta. Michael Tabone will also soon be embarking on a project to deliver wine tutorial sessions in conjunction with timesofmalta.com.

the total Bordeaux wine production. The grape varieties that are grown there are different to those grown in the rest of Bordeaux and the wines are not as tannic. St Emilion is a rather homogenous appellation but has four distinct types of wines. Based on their distinctive soils and terroirs, connoisseurs may well recognise the origin of different wines when tasting them. Of course some may also recognise the wine itself and even the chateau that produced it but this is a skill that is mastered in time. Michael concludes with a tempting description – “St Emilion wines are distinguished by their elegance, their finesse and their softness”. The Jurade of St Emilion is about to physically leave its mark on Malta as it will be on an official visit here on 11 December. During the three-day-visit, the Jurade, led by the President of the Conseil de la Jurade, will be intronising a number of Maltese wine lovers and will also be holding an important event in aid of The Malta Community Chest Fund. Until then, it’s time to get to know better the world-renowned wines of St Emilion.

The Magnum PI-styled Ferrari For the past 10 years, Kenneth Attard has been cruising one of the most sought-after vehicles in the world... the Ferrari! Here he tells Krista Micallef Trigona what it feels like to whizz around behind its wheel.

“We all have dreams and targets that we would like to accomplish and reach in our lives, and owning a Ferrari was always on my wish list,” says Kenneth Attard, the proud owner of a Ferrari 208 GTS. “The 208 GTS model first caught my eye back in the early ‘80s in the popular television series, ‘Magnum PI’. From that point on I knew that I had to get my hands on this car, but to do so, I had to overcome one of the biggest obstacles that comes with wanting and owning a Ferrari: the expense. This is a hobby that costs big time, and people often need a push to buy this type of car. In my case, I got the push I needed from one of my good friends, Ray Vella, the President of the Ferrari Malta Club, and I have never looked back on my decision since.” At a Glance The Ferrari 208 series was first revealed in 1980 and remained in production until 1982, with approximately 300 examples produced in just left hand drive versions. “This classic model is a

reproduction of the 308 series, introduced to the Italian market in order to take advantage of the fiscal system at the time,” Kenneth explains. “The 208 was only slightly modified with a two litre engine and eight cylinders (hence the name) with the turbo charger introduced in 1983 and intercooler power in 1986.” “At a glance, the car incorporates the right curves with the right level of aggression, giving it its curvy, yet sporty finish,” he adds. Indeed it does – the 208 GTS was designed by the renowned Italian automobile design company Pininfarina, and features a pronounced wedge profile with a rectangular eggcrate aluminium radiator grill below a slim, full-width satin black bumper. Its interior is identical to the 308 GTB series with leather trimmed bucket seats, and the main instruments are contained in a hooded nacelle in front of the driver, whilst the clock and oil temperature gauges are mounted in a separate panel on the lower left edge of the dashboard. Without a doubt, it’s the car’s sleek design that gets heads

67

STYLE LIVING turning and Kenneth is somewhat used to the attraction that it receives, but he admits that he does shy away from the attention it commands. “I drive a Ferrari because of the pleasure I get from driving it as opposed to the attention I receive when I’m in it. Very often, this attention does concern me – other car owners are at times looking for a challenge, but I’m more concerned about the damage that they can do to my car!” Unsurprisingly, in comparison to newer Ferrari models, the 208 GTS is relatively slow, reaching top speeds of 256km/h. It has a 1991cc V8 engine, in 90-degree configuration, the first series of which delivers 155bhp at 6800 rpm, whilst this model is the third series that delivers 250bhp. With its classic and turbo engine, the 280’s acceleration performance does not kick in until 3000 revs per second. “At this point, you feel as though you have been thrown back into your seat,” Kenneth says, adding that “unfortunately, the Ferrari’s full potential cannot be exploited in Malta, due to the island’s size and speed limits.”

Kenneth’s Verdict “When you own a Ferrari, you build a loving bond with it. You need to have a passion for Ferraris in order to drive one as difficulties and problems do crop up. For starters, space to cruise around in Malta is limited and there are many bends and hills. It is also difficult to take its speed to a maximum, as the national speed limit is 80km/h. It takes a while to get used to as it is only available in left hand drive and using the car’s pedals can be uncomfortable due to the space allocated to the tyre well. Fuel consumption is relatively reasonable but when you are an enthusiast, this factor is insignificant because once you get the hang of things, driving a Ferrari is a pure pleasure.”

Kenneth’s Top Tip: If owning a Ferrari is a real dream of yours, do not wait too long to get one. It is well worth the effort and the personal quality time you spend with the car. During this event, a Ferrari F50 and an F16 Fighter Jet from the Dutch air force raced and, until all the wheels were touching the ground, the Ferrari was ahead of the jet.

STYLE HOME With change in the air, it is time to get your home ready for autumn. This season’s fashionable couture colours also feature in the world of interior design. From bold bright oranges and blues to gentle and chic pastels, there is no excuse to shy away from colour. The trick is in how to use colour. More often than not, it is introduced through accessories, however, this time we worked in reverse. The orange sofa, which is the statement piece in our living room, is the focal point and it adds a predominant splash of vibrancy. The rest of the featured items are neutral, therefore toning down the brightness of our base. Well-sized coffee tables are a great blank canvas. Gone are the days when every corner and surface had to be decorated. That said, a few well-chosen pieces can add so much interest to your composition. In this case (see pg 73), since the coffee table is low, the tall vases add height and proportion. By all means choose things made from different materials and texture, however there has to be that common factor which brings them all together. More often than not, it is a matching hue that does this best. Here, the old farmhouse walls marry well with modern and contemporary furniture. The contrast of the rough texture and rich colours of the walls against the smooth surfaces and lines, and of contemporary furniture, really helps to bring out the best in each other.

74

Style’s top tipS: Adding little details, such as different cushions on each of your dining room chairs, creates an interesting and stylish touch. Lots and lots of scatter cushions add colour, texture and warmth in one of the chicest ways possible. And with so many available on the market, you can mix and match different sizes, shapes and patterns. Lamps never fail to create atmosphere in a room. There are so many different styles to choose from, but always take the proportions of each item into consideration. For instance, the bed on pg 78 is very low, therefore tall lamps were used to give height as well as to provide better reading light. Finally, as opposed to what we are used to seeing, artwork does not necessarily need to be hung to a wall to be displayed. Leaning it on a shelf or natural ledge in the wall is a stylish way of displaying your artistic treasures (see pgs 77 and 78).

STYLE CUISINE

Coniglio Ripieno con Salsiccia e Pistacchi Serves 4

HUNTING GAMEs Strong flavours and international touches combine in these delicious, meaty dishes – ideal for dinner parties or when you want to impress. Food by chef Keith Grech at Premier, Valletta Props by Zara Home Photography by briangrech Art direction by Stephen Azzopardi

Ingredients: 1 whole rabbit (cleaned and boned); 2 skinless Maltese sausages; 1 egg; 30g crushed pistachio nuts; 30g chopped bacon; thyme; 1/2 carrot (roughly chopped); 1/2 onion (roughly chopped); glass of white wine; rosemary; salt & pepper; courgettes (sliced into strips); vegetable stock or chicken bouillon; string Preparation: Mix the Maltese sausage, pistachios, onion, carrots, chopped bacon, egg and thyme together in a bowl; this will be the stuffing. Once the rabbit has been cleaned and boned, place the stuffing along the centre of it and roll it up, tying it together with the string. Pour oil into a heated pan and fry the rabbit to seal it until it turns golden brown. Season to taste with rosemary, salt and pepper. Add the white wine and reduce, before adding the stock. Leave to cook on a low heat for between 35 to 40 minutes. In the meantime, fry the courgettes in butter, salt and pepper. When the rabbit is ready, put it to one side to cool. Strain the sauce and reduce, then season to taste. Finally, slice the rabbit and serve on a bed of the courgettes, before adding the sauce.

Preparation: Mix the beer, flour, garlic, thyme, chilli, salt, pepper and parsley together in a large bowl. This will create the batter for the tempura.
