STYLE In-DEPtH

Nudity is one of the final taboos but should we just get over it? Style on Sunday speaks to three people who shed their inhibitions and clothes to celebrate nature, art and above all themselves.

Contrarily to some women, Graziella Calleja felt truly beautiful during her pregnancy, so much so that she chose to bare her bump for a professional photo shoot with stunning results. She is now mum to Cody, 4, and runs the Me To You shop in Ta’ Xbiex .

Au Naturel photography by briangrech

Mum-to-be Graziella Calleja, bared all 7 months into her pregnancy.

“From the outset Jason, who I have been with for 12 years, and I only ever planned to have one child and we were keen to make the most of it. We wanted to take the memories further than just baby photos, to remember my pregnancy and to be able to show our son what he looked like when he was in his mum’s tummy. Thus, we have charted our son’s life since Day One – and that was minus three months! “I know most mums or mums-to-be will have a hard time relating to what I chose to do but I had so much fun with it, it wasn’t hard at all. Of course I was used to having a certain type of body and suddenly I had a completely

11

STYLE In-DEPtH different one. The Maltese tend to treat pregnant women as though they are ill or with kid gloves, but they were the nine healthiest months of my life and I felt fantastic. Everyone has an opinion on what you should and should not do, but I think it should be ‘pretty and pregnant’ not ‘cover up and hide’! Women here tend to keep their bumps under wraps, in fact when I went to the beach in a bikini at eight months pregnant everyone seemed to nudge each other and stare. It didn’t bother me as long as I felt comfortable.”

“There was an element of vulnerability there but I could feel a certain glow about me and was so proud to show off what was growing inside me.” - Graziella Calleja

At seven months pregnant Graziella chose to bare all in front of a professional photographer to capture the special moment for posterity. “Of course I didn’t feel one hundred per cent pretty as I stripped off for the shoot! There was an element of vulnerability there but I could feel a certain glow about me and was so proud to show off what was growing inside me. I went through all sorts of emotions during my time in front of the camera; when we shot outside, with the sun shining and the birds singing, I felt so at one with nature that nothing bothered me but the full-length shots were slightly harder! “Jason was as keen as I was to document my pregnancy in this way. He certainly didn’t see anything wrong with it and has always pushed

“Nudity? I would do it again! ” - Andrew Galea

Actor Andrew Galea is no stranger to stripping off for his art.

me to do things I may not otherwise have had the confidence to do. People may ask why we didn’t just whip out the camera at home and get clicking behind closed doors, but we wanted the right light and the talents of a pro to truly give us something to be proud of. “Looking back I’m so pleased to have done it. I am never shocked by nudity and on the contrary find it beautiful and art-like, as long as it isn’t crude. Now I can’t wait to show my son where he came from when he’s old enough to understand. I always want to look back on those nine months with love and as one of the happiest periods of my life. There’s nothing to hide, after all it’s not fat – it’s another life coming into this world and that’s definitely no reason to cover up!”

14

Up and coming local actor Andrew Galea faced one of theatre’s biggest challenges last year: full frontal nudity on stage at St James Cavalier for Unifaun Production’s Blasted. “Oddly, and perhaps surprisingly for some, I am inclined to be a little shy about personal nudity around others. Naturally the context in which I find myself naked matters a great deal. If I were forced to undress in front of a handful of strangers in a really small room, where I could watch their every reaction and register their every move, I would definitely feel truly uncomfortable. However, if I find myself among close friends and something necessitates that I bare all, I probably wouldn’t think twice about doing it! I’m not sure I agree

with the taboo surrounding public nudity, despite being a product of it myself. “Blasted required me to bare my soul, and a lot more, in a big way! Admittedly I was quite nervous. There were principally three things that spurred me on: the belief that I was partaking in the communication of several very important messages by doing what I was doing; the fact that I couldn’t really see the audience’s reaction because of the lighting; and finally, the feeling that I was, ultimately, pretending to be someone else, which gives you a bizarrely detached feeling from what you’re doing. “That it was a nude sex scene made it all the easier because I was actually doing something, rather than standing inanimate in front of the audience. I didn’t feel that the scene was too revealing really, because it was a case of simply dropping my trousers and immediately performing a rape-act. Once again, the idea that you are in fact representing someone else is in some way a justification that you tell yourself (repeatedly). The brutality of that scene also fired me up and triggered an animalistic drive, I think, that focused me and pushed me, something I probably couldn’t get from a calmer, less active scene. I’m sure certain people did find it offensive but, aside from pointing out that that was playwright Sarah Kane’s express desire in her work, I must also add that all promotional material for the play contained clear warnings or indications as to what the subject matter and content were. My (then) girlfriend’s mum came to watch Blasted and I don’t know what disturbed me most, the idea that she would want to see it in the first place or the fact that she was laughing when she next saw me! “The first night posed the most difficulty, when the magnitude of what I was about to do properly hit me. By then it was obviously too late, and I was quite giddy when I stepped into the lights. It passed as I slipped into the lines. The cast and others involved were also extremely supportive and helpful, so when in doubt I turned to them. Looking back it was so liberating! Having taken so big a risk, having so exposed yourself, it simultaneously forces you to accept who you are in light of (and despite) what other people might think of you, and urges you to continue finding yourself, to continue pushing yourself into circumstances you wouldn’t normally like to find yourself in. I would certainly do it again, without a second thought. It’s an adrenaline rush like any other and, as already mentioned, it brings to light certain aspects within you that you didn’t see before. I would only involve myself in something I perceived to be meaningful or worthwhile. “I don’t think that we should search to incorporate nudity in

everything, but nor do I think should we attempt to avoid it. Being more open about our bodies may, in the end, be beneficial to society, eliminating repression and embarrassment in favour of communication, self-awareness and sexual education.” Models often face the prospect of nudity in their line of work and Marie-Louise Attard* grasped the opportunity to take part in an artistic nude shoot with both hands. Despite the fact that she enjoyed every minute of it, Marie-Louise has made the decision not to strip off for future assignments. “I’m certainly not the sort of person who would be described as a prude, and modelling has long been a way for me to express myself; models are often called on for nude scenes but this was a first for me. When I heard about the assignment, with a foreign company, I was keen to give it a go and had no problem at all with the idea.In fact I was rather excited and looked forward to the experience. “The assignment itself, for a BBC teleseries, was quite simple and I had to pose as one of the actor’s lovers, and later for a portrait. In general I felt fine stripping off even though I did feel a little nervous considering how many people were milling around and the amount of light that was thrown in my direction! But I was made to feel at home, and the atmosphere was very professional. After all, the scene we were aiming to create was very artistic and not crude in any way, so there was nothing to feel uncomfortable about. “On both the occasions that I chose to go nude I’ll admit it was mostly about the money. The fact that few women are willing to strip off means that it is lucrative, but I still don’t think that changes the fact that it was all done in very good taste; I would never compromise my self-respect. I haven’t ever seen the film version, but I was thrilled with the artwork. “Looking back though, even though I enjoyed it as much as I did, I wouldn’t do it again. The fact that the exposure is unlimited and can be seen all over the world unnerves me slightly, made worse because I’m now a mum. That said, I enjoy subtle nudity in a film and think we need to be exposed to what is natural. But now that I’m older I see things a little differently and feel strange about being exposed. “Nudity is beautiful though; our body is a natural work of art that is pleasing to the eye and should be celebrated. If beauty is expressed subtly, gracefully and within a natural and respectful context then I believe in it. It inspires us and helps us to understand ourselves more.”

“Nudity is beautiful, it inspires us and helps us to understand ourselves more.” 17

STYLE INTERVIEW

President George Abela has been in office for two months now. Style on Sunday went behind the scenes at San Anton Palace to meet his charming wife, our new First Lady. Words by Jo Caruana Photography by briangrech

First LADY Margaret Abela’s tiny frame emerges through the gold

gilded doors of San Anton and her smile fills the room – and that’s no mean feat given the size of it. Initially shy of our bright lights and photographic apparatus, she gets over all that soon enough and turns her attention to making us feel as at home at the Palace as she is. “It’s two months since we moved in,” she begins, recalling the move she and her husband, President George Abela, made from their home in

the south upon his official instatement on 4 April, “and already we are very comfortable here. It was a big change for us of course, but there is such a wonderful ambiance at the Palace and everyone was so helpful that we settled in quite effortlessly.” “I remember thinking how far off it all felt when the news first emerged that George would be Malta’s next President; I don’t think I batted an eyelid at the time. But suddenly we were going to be living here, and

19

STYLE INTERVIEW the reality of that was the farthest thing from my mind! Now, though, I am relishing it and enjoying the experience of everything that this wonderful home has to offer.” We meet Mrs Abela in the Palace’s official quarters, but she is quick to explain that the grandeur surrounding us is not what she and her husband live with everyday. “Our private quarters are where we spend all our time, in fact we only

usually venture into this part of the Palace for official occasions. I really wanted it to feel like home as soon as possible, and I have scattered a number of our photos around the house to give it that personal touch. Most of them include our children, Maria and Robert, but our new favourite one is of George and I after his inauguration; it marks a very special moment for us.” Family seems to play a very important role for the couple and Mrs

“The post means a lot to me, and I am particularly looking forward to the charitable aspect of the work that I will be doing over the next few years through the Community Chest Fund.”

Abela enthuses about her children, Robert, 31 and Maria, 26. “Maria studies classical singing overseas, but will be back this summer as she is getting married. I can’t wait to be mother of the bride! She came over at Christmas and we started to iron out the finer details of it all; it should be a really wonderful occasion. “I have always enjoyed being a hands-on mum and didn’t find it hard to juggle my husband’s career with caring for them while they were growing up. I also worked for my husband’s private firm, but that was always from

20

home, and it meant a lot to me to be able to be there when my children came in from school or when they needed something. I ensured they were well looked-after while he worked hard to guarantee we were all well looked-after; it is a partnership that has stood the test of time.” Clearly Mrs Abela is thrilled to be standing beside her husband as he embarks on one of the biggest challenges of his career. The couple have been married for 33 years, but still have fond memories of how they met. “I worked in an administration post at the university for ten years while

“You can never have enough dresses!”

George was a student. I was in charge of the registry and he would pop into the office all the time for one reason or another – possibly to see me! It was nine years until we got married, as we waited until George had finished his studies – first as a teacher and later a lawyer. “Our wedding day – 23 May – was beautiful, and typical of the era. It was a very happy occasion and I remember being surrounded by both friends and family throughout the ceremony at the Capucchin Church in Floriana, and the reception later at the Wignacourt Hotel. It was a windy day but a lovely one – looking back I don’t suppose we could have ever pictured how our lives would work out. It has been a wonderful journey.” Mrs Abela certainly comes across as unassuming, but already she seems to be coming into her own within the role. “There is no doubt that I am shy by nature, but I guess I show my strength through the decisions that I take. It truly is an honour to be Malta’s First Lady and although it has paved the way for some big changes I think I am doing my best to live up to people’s expectations. The post means a lot to me too, and I am particularly looking forward to the charitable aspect of the work that I will be doing over the next few years through the Community Chest Fund, as we strive to help those people in our society who need it most.” And how is she dealing with her new role as a style icon? “I’ve never really thought of myself as that!” she smiles, “but I suppose I am enjoying it and I truly believe that you can never have enough dresses! I am lucky to have the help of my personal assistant Darlene, who puts my outfits together, but at the same time I know that looking good is all about feeling great. I am a big believer in staying fit and healthy, and it’s not unusual to see me taking a quick jog around the gardens. “Life may have changed completely for me, but I am ready to take the bull by the horns, to enjoy it and to make a difference in any way I can!”

“Every aspect of what I do is thrilling and interesting, and I love it.”

How would you describe yourself? I consider myself to be very curious, which is an asset in this industry. I’m always full of energy and eager to sink my teeth into new projects whenever the opportunity arises. I love people and am keen to try to understand them and the way they think. In fact, I am interested in psychology and faith; self-development and ‘a balanced soul’ are very important to me. Your background is very academic, what made you get into the world of the arts? I started my career as a teacher, but even back then my passion was film and in addition to my job I focused heavily on cinema. Then, during our six weeks of summer holidays, I took a job as a costumier and scriptwriter on a big film production and I was hooked. I resigned from my teaching job, moved to Berlin and found work as an assistant director. It was a tough but exciting time and I loved it; it meant hard work, not very much money and the challenges that come from living in a new city. But I was always keen and kept my finger on the pulse to help get my foot in the door. Altogether it was a terribly exhausting and uplifting time!

Your career spans TV, radio, film and books – which industry do you like the most and why? For me it’s not so much about the format of the work that I do but the people and content related to it. My current talk show Unter4Augen (which means ‘In Confidence’) is very close to my heart. It is a 30-minute show that talks in detail to one person about how they became who they are today. It’s great! I also love my other show which focuses on scientific topics, and I converse with top-ranking scientists on all kinds of vital topics – an upcoming one is Alzheimer’s Disease for instance. Soon I will also be travelling to Jerusalem to shoot a programme based on Catholicism. Every aspect of what I do is thrilling and interesting, and I love it. What sort of books do you enjoy writing and how to do you find the time? I have written a number of very different books – mostly spurred on by my curiosity and passion to learn about new topics over and over again, which is why I manage to slot them in. I have (among others) written books for teenagers which are similar to the Harry Potter series and which are popular with readers of all ages; I also wrote

STYLE InTERVIEW

“I knew 80 million viewers were watching which fuelled me with pure adrenaline.” a Bible for children. Furthermore I have penned four specialised health books as I hope to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health and bodies, as well as a cook book portraying top-notch chefs as artists. What is it you have enjoyed most about your career? The knowledge that my work is reaching people feels fantastic. It was amazing for me to realise that my closing words of my TV show alles wird gut (‘everything will turn out fine’) have evoked some incredible feedback. So many viewers wrote to me stating that they took confidence in them and people often stop me in the street, smile and say: alles wird gut ! It gives me the most amazing feeling to know I have touched their lives. Is there any one moment that stands out as a highlight of your career? One of my personal highlights was presenting a programme celebrating the EU accession of several countries in 2004 – among them Malta with a sensational event and fireworks! I knew 80 million viewers were watching which fuelled me with pure adrenaline. Name a difficult time in your career and explain how you managed to get through it. Life hasn’t always been rosy! In 1994 and 1997 I started new daily programmes which were unsuccessful from the start; they didn’t meet the expected ratings and were criticised in the press. It was a time of fear, stress and pressure, and my job was under threat. But I worked hard and didn’t allow myself to be brought down, fortunately ratings increased and reactions became positive resulting in 2.5 million viewers every day. Have you successfully managed to maintain a personal life alongside your career? Not always. My first marriage didn’t survive my career as my then-husband worked in Hamburg while I was away in Mainz and Berlin. To this day I don’t keep my business and personal life separate. I ‘live’ my work and a lot of my living has been done in the public eye. I certainly don’t feel that I have missed out on anything and I have no regrets. You have a history with several charities.Which issues are closest to your heart and why? Being able to aid charities is very important to me and I have focused this part of my work in four areas. On an international basis I have been involved with UNICEF for 12 years now, travelling to Nigeria, South Africa and Romania to visit projects and to report on them. I remain very enthusiastic about the intelligence of these projects as well as their closeness to the local

44

people who need them. On a local basis, I engage myself with the needs of handicapped women in Bavaria. I act as a patron for their network, collect money and present their events. When it comes to health-related projects I am a member of the popular German Felix-Burda-Darmkrebs-Stiftung (‘Foundation for the Prevention of Colon Cancer’) where I host events and take part in their campaigns. I am also passionate about the environment and am a patron of the campaign Unendlich viel Energie (‘An Infinite Amount of Energy’) which supports renewable energy sources. Last but not least, I put a lot of time into the children’s charity project Kindercamp Villa Sans Souci, a charity for children with life threatening illnesses. What is your relationship to Malta and what do you think of the islands? I am fascinated by the Maltese Islands! One really can breathe history in Malta and I am always so amazed by the huge variety of exceptional places to see. The historic sites are particularly outstanding and I am often bowled over by the warm hearts of the locals; I always feel at home in Malta. How does life differ in Germany, and how would you compare the two to each other? There is much more rain in Germany and the wind blows colder – in both senses of the word. In my view the Maltese are very openminded, tolerant and fun-loving, thus they are able to enjoy life much more which is so refreshing. What I appreciate most about Germany is the German punctuality and reliability which cannot be beaten!

Sex Roulette If you can’t be good, be careful – that’s what youngsters are told once they start showing an interest in sex. But Cynthia Busuttil finds out that many of the Maltese who are not being good, are not being careful either.

It may be a year-round activity, but as summer approaches, bringing with it longer days, warm weather and an influx of tourists, one expects sex to flourish. “I have no doubt that more people engage in sexual activity in summer given that they have more opportunities,” Philip Carabot, the consultant in charge of the Genitourinary Clinic at Boffa Hospital, says. But any increase in promiscuity is not bringing with it changes in behaviour and the Maltese are still renowned for not using condoms. “We remain in the middle ages with regards to the use of condoms,” says Dr Carabot, who after 34 years in the profession was hoping that this trend would change. “I would have hoped that more people would be using condoms by now, although I am not surprised that they aren’t since condom use still

comes under fire sometimes.” Just in March, Pope Benedict XVI was heavily criticised when he said condoms increased the problem of HIV, a comment that sparked clashes and spurred one of the world’s top medical journals, the Lancet, to say that the Pope had publicly distorted scientific evidence. Every year Dr Carabot continues to face hundreds of people, of all ages, who admit to unprotected sex. In fact, more than 70 per cent of the 2,632 people who visited the Floriana-based clinic last year admitted to never using a condom. Only 10 per cent said they always used protection. “Girls are no longer scared of getting pregnant. Many do not want to go on the pill because they are worried they may gain weight. Do they know how much a baby weighs?”

“People are no longer scared of HIV. I see patients who knowingly have unprotected sex with HIV-positive patients because they say they love them.” - Dr Philip Carabot, consultant, Genitourinary Clinic

Facts and figures - More than 14,000 people visited the GU Clinic between 2000 and last year, with the numbers increasing annually. - The majority of those who visit the GU Clinic (64 per cent) are males. Three-quarters are selfreferred. - More than 7 per cent of patients are under 18. - Almost half the patients describe their recent partner as sexual. Although 42 per cent have sex with their regular partners, 70 per cent of them do not use condoms. - Over the years the percentage of those who never use a condom has fluctuated between just over 60 per cent and just under 80 per cent, with the highest levels recorded in 2001. - Since 2000 the GU Clinic has diagnosed 489 cases of chlamydia, 200 cases of gonorrhoea, 269 cases of herpes, 89 cases of syphilis and a staggering 1128 cases of ano-genital warts.

But even when the female wants her partner to use a condom, there is reluctance from men. “Most boys can’t be bothered. Some girls would like their partner to use a condom, but he does not, and unfortunately there is still the attitude that the male dictates matters and females have no say,” a concerned Dr Carabot says, adding that girls still lack the empowerment to take matters in their own hands and insist that their partner uses a condom. “Using a condom is considered not to be macho,” he says, adding that the problem is found in all ages. Not even HIV, the most serious of sexually transmitted infections and still incurable, holds much dread. “People are no longer scared of HIV. The novelty has worn off and it has become accepted, even because of the advances in treatment, although there is still no cure. I see patients who knowingly have unprotected sex with HIV-positive patients because they say they love them.” The worry is that youngsters are having sex earlier and earlier, with the youngest patient seen by Dr Carabot being a 12-year-old girl. “They are children. Not only are they running the risk of acquiring infections, but they also losing out on the beauty of childhood. It is my impression that many youngsters who start sex early seem to age much more quickly.” Because they are still physiologically immature, young girls are more prone to infection. Dr Carabot explains that one of the complications of chlamydia and gonorrhoea is pelvic inflammatory disease, which can go into the womb and cause infertility. Last year Dr Carabot diagnosed 116 cases of chlamydia and 54 cases of gonorrhoea, 4.4 per cent and 2 per cent of those who visited the clinic. However, this by no means gives a complete picture of the problem and Dr Carabot recognises that it is most probably the tip of the iceberg. “I believe that the real issue is bigger than what we are seeing and we need specific studies on target groups to know exactly what the problem is,” he says, adding that the incidence of patients with problems increases annually.

“It is still common for people to have a one-night stand where they do not know their partner’s name and have no contact details.” - Dr Philip Carabot 51

go to the GU Clinic without an appointment. “But hardly anybody comes. We still lack a culture where people feel responsible for their actions, possibly because of lack of education. Many do not care about their former partners as long as they are being treated.” “I am seeing more and more cases of chlamydia and gonorrhoea every year, but these can easily be multiplied. For each infection I see, there must be another five out there. This is surely the tip of the iceberg. Unless we trace back all contacts we cannot have a real picture but given the attitude, it’s impossible,” he says.

Although attempts are made to contact the previous partners of those who have a sexually transmitted infection, this is many times unsuccessful. “We depend on the goodwill of the index patients and if they don’t know who their partners were, or do not care, there is nothing we can do. It is still common for people to have a one-night stand where they do not know their partner’s name and have no contact details.” Patients who have an infection are given a contact slip which they can pass on to any person they had sex with, who would in turn be able to

When Tancred Tabone scoured the market for a new car last year he wanted something unostentatious, yet different and fun. He chose the Lexus GS 450h.

Tancred Tabone sits at his desk in the new Forestals offices overlooking the Mriehel Bypass and is keen not only to talk about his car but for me to see it, walk around it and sit in it. He was first attracted to the Lexus GS 450h because he wanted something “a little bit different to what was available on the market”, he says with enthusiasm. Having previously owned another Japanese car, he argues: “I particularly like them and have since wanted to get an even better, and nicer, Japanese vehicle.” Two other factors convinced him to go for the Lexus: its green

credentials, since it is a petrol-electric hybrid, and its low-key looks. The conventional 3.5-litre petrol engine develops 292 bhp and the electric motor, fed from a nickel-metal hydride battery, develops 197 bhp. This synergy produces a combined output of 341 bhp, meaning scorching acceleration to 100 km/h in under six seconds and a top speed that is limited to 250 km/h. Secondly, he says, the Lexus is quite discreet – “not too many people recognise it as being the luxury brand of Toyota.” Mr Tabone admits he has a passion for cars and has been driving since 1974. He also owns a 1969 Mercedes 280SL convertible, which he uses occasionally, but the Lexus is his everyday car. “I’ve had a number of cars which have given me a lot of pleasure,” he adds. He is particularly fond of the Lexus because it is different, it has enormous acceleration and power, and it is relatively eco-friendly. He has already taken the Lexus overland on the continent via Sicily and has found it to be extremely fast and comfortable. The downside: “Although it’s a four-seater, you struggle to put luggage in for two people,” since the batteries take up so much space behind the rear seat. He has even bought bespoke luggage to

maximise on space. What he is impressed by is the fact that it is totally silent when ‘you fire it up’ by pressing the ‘Start’ button (since it automatically takes off on battery power), and he loves the air-conditioned seats which enable cold air to be blown through the perforated cream leather. “There’s no engine sound, no sound of the starter turning; there’s absolutely nothing. You just put the automatic transmission into ‘Drive’ and it just goes… It’s the first time I’ve owned a car with air-conditioned seats. That is a really ‘cool’ gadget!” Apart from the Mercedes, he has no intention of holding on to a car for more than four years. Having purchased the Lexus last year, he will be on the lookout again within a couple of years’ time. “When I do come to change this car, I’ll try to look for something that isn’t too noticeable and not too common – not too much of a well-known brand,” he said. “I would definitely buy a car through the agent in Malta because I believe that a car needs service and believe that it’s only right to get a vehicle through them. But I would like to look for something that’s a little bit distinct, whether it’s the brand or the model – just for the fun of having something different.”

“This makeover was a super treat for me and I loved every minute of it! I certainly made the most of being pampered and love the treatment that Joseph put though my hair; it has made it look really shiny. Plus I really like the make-up used as it is pretty without being over the top. The last time I got made over was on my wedding day so this has been really special! I also love the clothes chosen as they are vibrant and I think they are different but still suit my style. My daughters were awe struck when they saw the finished result so I guess it successfully got the toughest seal of approval!”

GET SUN KISSED

Don’t get hot under the collar, stay gorgeous throughout summer. Award-winning make-up artist Diane Nikolic explains how to kiss the sun not curse it. Summer weather can create all kinds of woe for those intent on looking stunning through the heat. This season can be difficult for make-up, so follow these tips for a hassle-free, beautiful look that will survive the sweltering weather. Many say that they simply sweat their make-up off when it’s hot. If this is the case, then I suggest that you forget about applying foundation altogether and use a self tanning spray instead. This will give your skin a lovely sun-kissed glow. A summer glow is great, but if you’re lacking a flawless complexion you will likely still need a little help. Ensure your make-up looks as natural as possible by beginning with a concealer

in the same hue as your skin. A light application should be more than enough to cover imperfections. If you need a foundation, opt for a luminous one with light reflecting qualities to give a healthy glow. Use a light, undereye illuminator to create further highlights without the creases.

Brushed all over the eyelid, this will appear natural and offers the illusion of larger eyes. Eyeliner isn’t a must but if you do use it then I suggest a smooth, thin line on the top lid only and plenty of waterproof mascara so that it doesn’t run if you sweat a little.

Bronzers come in both a powder form and in cream, depending on your preferences. If you go for powder form use a light dusting of translucent powder before you apply your bronzer for a smoother finish. Creams don’t require powder and can be applied all over the cheeks. Be sure to blend well towards the outer parts of your face.

A touch of pink rouge on the cheeks will give you that warm glow and can brighten the dullest of complexions. But if your cheeks are naturally red then skip the blush and leave the glow up to mother nature.

If you want that ‘no make-up look’, then avoid eye shadow and go for a vanilla-coloured shimmer instead.

Finally, lips need little work and a simple smear of natural gloss, or even a healing lip balm, will be the perfect finishing touch to your au naturel summer look!

STYLE BEAUTY

Guerlain introduces a sun-kissed breakthrough. Style on Sunday looks at the illuminating and beautifying qualities of the Terracotta range, which offers a natural looking tan and flawless finish.

Natural Summer Beauty: A return to the source Guerlain is constantly striving to create the best while always enhancing well-being and naturalness. For that reason they have invented the all-new Terracotta line of bronzing products, which offer a tan that is as close to perfection as one can get. The product draws its inspiration from the earth to create a new sensory escape: Terracotta Mineral. Created using the secrets of traditions that go back thousands of years, this groundbreaking bronzing powder uses the incredible power of minerals to offer another version of a natural looking tan and flawless finish. Terracotta Mineral gives the complexion the same natural and healthy glow while remaining as imperceptible as a sheer foundation. It is a pure formula composed of mineral ingredients. The loose powder contains no synthetic or binding agents and its ingredients have been prized for centuries because of their beneficial properties. The magic starts upon application, when the super-fine powder glides and melts into the skin. Mattified, velvety and comfortable, you’ll enjoy a flawless complexion and a marvellous tan that glows for hours. And that incredible tan can be further enhanced

by the expert range of products that Guerlain has created to accompany their iconic new bronzer: The Terracotta Kabuki Bronzing Powder Brush is the perfect applicator for the range. Elegant and delicate, with a handle in lacquered wood, the Kabuki brush is incredibly dense with high-quality goat hair. As a result, it can pick up more bronzing pigment than any other brush, which it ‘crushes’ and generously smoothes onto the skin for optimal, uniform results. Also in its quest for well-being and pleasure, the Terracotta range offers two complementary products that are ideal for summer. The Soothing Moisture Mist is a delicious mist that enhances the hydration of the skin, amplifies the tan and enchants the senses. Its refreshing texture, endowed with a tan booster complex, prolongs it day after day while also protecting the skin from the intense heat of summer. Nourishing Dry Oil leaves skin marvellously silky. Its evanescent and beneficial caress nourishes and perfumes the skin, and magnifies the tan with a subtly iridescent veil made of miniscule golden particles of mother-of-pearl. Utterly sensual, it nourishes sun-warmed skin and leaves it divinely smooth and luscious.

Three of the other must-have products from the range are: High-shine Lip Balm – a beneficial cocktail in three shades made from wild mango butter, marula oil and luffa oil. It reigns supreme for restoring the lipidic balance. The Gloss Cashmere Velvet Matte Gloss combines the lightness of a gloss and the velvety matte finish of a lipstick. It is like a second skin – comfortable and non-sticky, in three spellbinding shades. The Paduka Nail Lacquer was specially created to enhance tanned hands and feet. The bottle, with its wooden cap, contains three vibrant colours to polish the nails: iridescent beige, pearly bronze or flamboyant red. For the full range of Terracotta, visit Guerlain stocking outlets.

STYLE IN-DEPTH

The Fairest Picture on my wall What is art? asks Pia Zammit of three prominent art collectors. And what do they choose to hang on their walls?

“The sheer pleasure of owning good pieces goes beyond monetary worth.” - Dr Keith Sciberras

Art is incredibly subjective. What I may think is a masterpiece and speaks volumes may look like a squiggly daub of paint to you. I would probably sell my soul (or my shoes) to have Joan Miro’s ‘Dog Barking at the Moon’ in my possession. It lifts my spirits and makes life seem better. And isn’t that the point of art? I spoke to three art collectors about their most loved piece – with one difference; it had to be a piece in their collection.

77

STYLE in-depth

“Had I a free choice of any painting in the universe, I would like to linger long between a delirious El Greco and a mesmerizing Picasso” - Judge Giovanni Bonello Dr Keith Sciberras from the University of Malta’s History of Art Department told me that, if pushed to choose his favourite painting, he would go for Antoine Camilleri’s ‘Nudes in the Forest’. “It’s a large oil on board painting executed by the artist in 1961 during his stay at the Bath Academy in England. I consider it a bold and fundamental work for the further development of Modern Art in Malta. In it, Camilleri experimented with direct gestural strokes of an expressionist intensity, leaving the brown ground of glued cardboard to play a major role. The subject, two nude figures reclining in a forest under a scorching sun, is turned into a semi-abstract work of an intensity that is rare in mid-20th century Maltese art. I bought it directly from the artist in, or just after, the year 2000, and I had been after it for years, since I was a university student, I distinctly remember it stacked amidst other works in his studio at Zachary Street in Valletta. Antoine Camilleri was so passionate about his works and this was always top on

78

his list. It was a painting I constantly teased him about, especially on its point of departure. He would discuss it with a fascinating mix of charm and gusto. It took me many visits to his studio to finally convince him to sell it. We had developed a wonderful bond between us. These were the years when I was homing in on major breakthroughs on Caravaggio and he would want to know every minute detail of the developing story. The painting now hangs above the TV in our living room. It’s a work of art which I can certainly say that ‘I live with’! I admire it for its boldness. It was painted in 1961 which, when compared to the work of most of Antoine’s contemporaries in Malta, makes it stand out so dramatically from the rest. I believe it is always worth investing in art. The sheer pleasure of owning good pieces goes beyond monetary worth. In any case, I have rarely come across instances where good works sold for less than what they were bought for. You see, the issue revolves around quality, not quantity. Good art sells well... it also sells fast.”

Judge Giovanni Bonello is an acclaimed historian and activist as well as an art collector. He chose ‘The Chicken Hawker’ by Edward Caruana Dingli to talk to me about. “Edward Caruana Dingli (1876-1950) perceived art as escapism. Superficially, he comes across as a ‘realist’, almost a starry-eyed photographer of what is happening around him. In truth, his is a world of disinfected fantasy, in which everyone is joyful, things don’t dare be out of place, and no one would be so bad-mannered as to disturb the harmonies of Utopia. Caruana Dingli’s pictures confirm that everyone lived happily ever after. I became interested in the art of Maltese painters of the 1930s for several reasons. In no particular order: because those were the years of art deco, a bold aesthetic current that revolutionised perceptions the world over, but somehow managed to leave Malta almost unscathed. Secondly, because those years represented a renaissance of Maltese art, after a period of tired, uninspired academia that had dampened creativity almost throughout

STYLE IN-DEPTH

“I discover more about a painting as the years go by.” - Celia Borg Cardona

the whole British period that far. Finally, because Maltese art returned full circle to its genetic source. Before the colonial period, virtually all art in Malta had its focus in Italy, for better or for worse. In the 1930s, most young Maltese artists re-gravitated on Rome, and with outstanding results. It is their most minimalist oils that I look for all over and keep at home in France. For this feature I have homed on the bozzetto of one of Caruana Dingli’s most popular paintings, ‘The Chicken Hawker’ – again, a pleasant and competent picture in which the artist keeps back all traces of angst from a beautiful, healthy young woman delighted with her hard lot of living in a farm and getting up daily at dawn to eke out a disagreeable, if not miserable, existence, with a totally unjustified smile on her face – all in dazzlingly bright colour. Mine may be an arbitrary choice. I could just as easily have picked up a Willie Apap. Or an Inglott, whose muted, almost monochrome palette, heralds the death that mowed down his genius ever so soon. And, had I a free choice of any painting in the universe, I would like to linger long between a delirious El Greco and a mesmerising Picasso. I would then end up tossing a coin, praying desperately it would land on its rim.” Celia Borg Cardona is an artist herself, and I asked her to omit her own work when picking a favourite. Yes I’m nasty. “‘Favourite’ is a difficult word. It is usually elements of a picture which will be my favourite – I might prefer the colour of one, the concept or the composition of another. Also, the element of time is crucial as I tend to grow to not like one artist so much and then really like another one and then go back to adoring the first one again. But right now the picture in my by-far-not-extensive-enough collection that is holding most of my attention is probably the most simple one I’ve got. It is a picture of a few vertical bars by Alex Dalli. It also has a few of his signature elusive shadows but that’s about it. Maybe it helps that I’ve hung it high above a doorway which I pass through many times a day, but I can’t stop myself looking at it almost every single time. I’m not certain what the artist was trying to convey but to me he has created an incredibly deep, dark and melancholic mood. And all this with a minimal amount of painting and subject matter. I bought it about three years ago at Alex’s exhibition of rather surreal pictures at the National Museum of Fine Arts. I guess most of my paintings have been bought in this way – just being so attracted to a particular picture at an exhibition that I feel I want to ‘own’ it. I think it is the sign of a ‘good’ picture when the picture ‘mellows’ and that I discover more about the picture as the years go by.”

YOUR PEFECT SUMMER GETAWAY

Make the most of your outdoor space! The perfect summer oasis may be closer than you think. As more people forgo their traditional summer vacations to save money, many homeowners are looking for ways to spruce up their outdoor area. Whether you’ve got a sprawling pool area, midsize patio or even a single balcony, you can create a great space for lounging, relaxing and entertaining. Here are some tips to help you escape from your day-today troubles, unwind and enjoy the warm summer sun – whatever space is at hand!

SCALE AND SPACE Don’t be put off by the space available but do get to know it; no area is too large or small to be made use of during the summer months. Sit in different spots at various times during the day and learn the details of your space. Think about the function, the circulation path and the flow when you design the areas. Measure the area that you have so that you can buy furniture that fits. Fortunately, today you can choose from a vast array of options. Fit the scale of your furniture to the scale of your outdoor space. Subdivide your space if needs be, by using planters, adding pergolas or even using different floor materials such as outdoor rugs or decking tiles.

CONSIDER STYLE Outdoor spaces can be as inviting and usable as the indoors. You can choose from wood, wrought iron, wicker, aluminum or a mixture of materials to furnish your outdoor space. Manufacturers provide them in all styles – traditional, contemporary, casual, formal or rustic to suit your requirements. Add accessories and colour to energize your space. Revamp your old furniture by adding plush cushions and gorgeous fabrics. You can let your decorating style go wild with the choices you find to do up your outdoor rooms and entertaining spaces. But always keep it simple. This is the tip we most need to employ. We wrongly tend to add more and more to a small space thinking that it will ‘round it out’ and make it feel finished.

FUNCTIONALITY AND VERSATILITY Many manufacturers have now built multi-function features into their new outdoor furniture catalogues. Choose furniture pieces that may perform more than one function to provide solutions to a challenging space. What do you need to have? For instance, a teak storage bench can double as a table, seat, cooler or storage space for cushions when it rains. Ensure your furniture is versatile enough to use outdoors or indoors, but also to accommodate any activity – day or night.

HAVE A FOCAL POINT Just as you need a focal point indoors to anchor a room, you will need one outdoors too. Water features are perfect for adding ambiance to any outdoor space and as an added bonus, the flow of water is soothing to listen to. An interesting piece of art, a vibrant sofa, an artistic coffee table or a warm fire pit could also provide the focal point. Alternatively, your focus could come from nature, too, such as from a tree or a vine on a trellis.

DINNER ON THE DECK

SHADE IT OR LIGHT IT UP Whatever the function of your outdoor area, it’s important to have some shade to increase the use of the space during the hotter days of the season. Umbrellas or awnings do double duty: blocking unwanted sun on blistering days and gathering warmth around your table on chillier ones.

Crockery and cutlery, wine glasses, table mats, flowers, pepper and salt mills - camilleriparismode Food - Busy Bee

At night add warm glows: lighting creates the ambiance. If you have an electrical outlet add outdoor lamps or hang strands of small lights, but you can also use candles. Try using hurricane lanterns, outdoor lamps, or even chandeliers. There is also a vast range of solar powered lamps now on the market – any space will take on the perfect atmosphere after the sun goes down with the variety of lighting options available. 91

WORKING IN STYLE

ALISTAIR FENECH Floral Designer

Gerberas are so striking and I love using them for floating displays. They are long lasting and look great in pools or ponds.

Striking accessories are used to jazz up arrangements such as coloured aluminium wire, beads and crystals, wired fabric and jute.

96

Lilies are fantastic because they open gradually, with different colours and breeds to choose from. These oriental lilies have a strong scent while others smell of nothing at all.

This box, containing cymbidium orchids, showcases how flowers arrive each week from Holland. Flowers come to us from all over the world, but a huge variety are also grown locally.

New Designed Fibre Wraps are waterproof and can be used in bouquets or vases to create more interest. Ribbons add texture and colour so I use a variety of them to create different effects, depending on whether the arrangement will be displayed indoors or out.

Aqua coloured silicone gel can be used as a decorative replacement to water in vases. We also use gravel, stones, coloured sand and crushed coloured glass.

Leaf shine is great for creating a luscious sheen on certain foliage but isn’t very effective on velvety varieties.

I use various tools for my basic trade – which is shaping and designing flower arrangements. These include scissors, secators, different wires, floral tape and guttocol tape.

This pink and lime bouquet is an example of modern floral design using a lime green cymbidium orchid, dracaena and philodendron leaves enhanced with purple twigs and matching wrapping, finished with a matching pearl pin.

Wet or dry foam is used for both fresh and artificial arrangements. I also use coloured foam in clear vases for a modern look.
