June is here and I’m dreaming of pina coladas on a deserted beach and no Wi-Fi connection. It’s one of those ‘please take me anywhere but here’ moments that come from middle-of-the-year fever. But, just as I get to the part when I am imagining myself being fanned by palm leaves on a sun bed, I start interviewing for our fabulous Gozo feature on pg 13 and am reminded that perhaps we don’t have it quite so bad after all. In fact, as I chat away to the international professionals and worldly individuals who have chosen to make Malta’s sister island their home, it becomes clear that I have forgotten exactly what makes the Maltese Islands so special. Read on to be reminded yourselves. And for more seaside antics, turn to our exciting home shoot on pg 73. This issue we took all of our favourite interior items to the beach for a look at which materials work best together, and at the many ways
to combine them in your home. This issue also sees Style on Sunday’s very first male cover interviewee, and Nathan Farrugia fitted the bill perfectly with his inspiring attitude to life and relaxed sense of style. Having recently completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables across the Moroccan desert, he brought back stories of his determination to succeed, as well as of his hopes to raise awareness for the causes he believes in. Read about his journey on pg 21. And of course, the rest of the best is back – with our up-to-the-minute fashion and beauty tips, in-depth articles and delicious recipes. I hope you relish every moment of the upcoming summer; I intend to! Happy reading!

“The Island That Chose Me” It’s easy for locals to forget the unique beauty and tranquillity that exists on Malta’s tiny sister island. STYLE ON SUNDAY chats to some foreign individuals and international professionals who have chosen to make it their cherished home. Shot on location at THIRTYSEVEN HOME HOTEL, Munxar, Gozo (www.thirtysevengozo.com) Photography: briangrech
In recent years, Gozo has become a haven for foreigners seeking respite in the Mediterranean. Speaking to them, it feels as though they have uncovered the secrets of the universe: a delightful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of life and amidst a lifestyle that cherishes the traditions of yesteryear. While most of us love the odd weekend escape to Gozo, these are international professionals and sophisticated characters who, despite having the world at their fingertips, have chosen to make it their full-time home. And it is in their fervent praise for the island that we realise just how lucky we are to have its quaint charm, unique beauty and laidback lifestyle right on our very own doorstep.

“Gozo brought out a strength and serenity that I don’t think existed in me before.” Patricia Piazzi
“I remember feeling so free as a child here, and the island has acted like a magnet to me ever since.” Cat Calabrese
Patricia Piazzi – Owns Thirtyseven Home Hotel, with her husband Giuseppe “Gozo is most definitely home now. Giuseppe and I have both had very busy and exciting careers in the world of fashion, as we owned a modelling agency, and which saw us travelling the world for weeks at a time. Even though Milan was our home, we were never there. We loved it, but it was simply a cupboard spot to unpack and repack our luggage! Then, 19 years ago, we discovered Gozo. My husband had told me to pack lightly as he was taking me on a special treat for my birthday, and he brought me here. It rained cats and dogs all week but we looked at properties and fell in love with this house, which we have now transformed into a boutique home-hotel. Although life is full of surprises and one never knows what is around the corner, we have definitely anchored ourselves in Gozo. “This house has an old soul, and I can feel that the people who lived in it were very happy here. It enchants you and there’s a surprise within every nook and cranny. When I first moved here I sometimes wondered whether this was just some crazy project, especially as I was still dealing with the death of my father. But Gozo helped me to
14
mourn him and brought out a strength and serenity that I don’t think existed in me before. I feel very fortunate to live here in this Pandora’s Box of passions and feelings, and I love being able to host people here too! “In fact, the island is a treasure trove of surprises in itself, from Belgian chocolates and organic fare in Victoria to the deli that reminds me of New York and the delicious Italian and Sicilian food to be found here, not to mention all the other wonderful products and crafts. Gucci and Prada can be bought all over the world, but what you find here is genuine passion. The simplicity of life here is what real luxury means to me. “There is so much to love in Gozo. I do, however, think there is a definite need to reopen the heliport or provide a landing strip for little planes, as this would make travelling so much faster. We also need to understand yachting tourism, and to create bigger and better marinas for this purpose. As for the rest of it, I believe Gozo to be in her waking process and we need to understand that in order to preserve her for future generations. The rest is up to nature, and we really are lucky to be able to enjoy it at its best in Gozo.”

STYLE In-DEPtH Cat Calabrese – Yoga instructor “I first came to Gozo as a child as my mother had grown up here. It was the sort of holiday that stuck in my mind because it was so full of wonderful memories. I remember feeling so free that the island has acted like a magnet to me ever since and, despite travelling and living in many parts of the world including Milan and the UK, I couldn’t wait to have a base here. It definitely chose me and I have been back a year now. I consider it to be my home. “Yoga and Gozo actually go hand in hand. I had been inspired by yoga itself when I chose to take it up professionally; I had seen the change it had had on my own life and wanted to share that with others. The island lends itself very gracefully to yoga as the atmosphere here is so tranquil. Yoga tourism is a big part of what I do, as I teach and work with people while they are on holiday. It is wonderful, as we get to practise outdoors in beautiful off-thebeaten-track spots like the Xlendi Tower where we can just sit and be with nature. It would definitely be a mistake to over-develop Gozo and its rustic sense is what people love so much about it. “Personally speaking, I love Gozo’s laidback way of life, as well as its energy. People have time for you here; they stop to ask how you are and what you’re up to. Of course you can be busy here, but it’s not the same as being trapped in a city and I enjoy the sense of community and safety that comes from living here. Every so often I do miss the adrenaline hit that I got from living in other parts of the world and have to remind myself that there is other stuff going on out there. But I feel so connected to the island, and this is definitely a long-term choice for me.” Martin Roddis – Massage therapist “Gozo represented a life shift for me. Although I’m from the UK, I had been living in Australia for three years when I met a Gozitan girl. We were both leaving our fast-paced careers behind and retraining as natural therapists. I knew that if I wanted to be with
her, I had to follow her to Gozo; so I did. It was the first time I’d heard of the Maltese Islands and all I could picture was the sun, sea and flat roofs. The reality was so much better than I had imagined. “When that relationship ended after a number of years, Gozo had become my home and I was reluctant to leave it. So I paused my life and stayed, and it’s still paused today. I enjoy being a massage therapist and have realigned my work-life balance; these days it’s far more life than work because Gozo’s a great place for that. I have lived in New York, Hong Kong and Sydney and if I hadn’t, I think Gozo might have felt too small, but as it is I am just enjoying the aura. I do miss the trees, but everything else is fine. In Gozo you can be one step in the future one minute – shopping online and having items delivered to you from all corners of the globe, and stepping back in time the next – by visiting the temples or the Cittadella. “To me Malta and Gozo are fundamentally different. The mainland is more congested and busy, and if I wanted that I could live anywhere in the world. The many tourists and visitors I’ve spoken to over the years think Gozo is a jewel. Of course you can get bogged down in the litter, the shell buildings and the animal cruelty, but this really is a special place and we must work to keep it that way. We can offer our tourists everything, but we do need an integrated approach to make it work and to ensure people know what wonders await them here. “As for me, I am completely integrated and am here for the foreseeable future. I’m considered to be a local now – I even get paid in cauliflowers, and that’s just great!” Jan & Anastasiya Kisling – Pilot and flight attendant flying private jets around the world Jan: “I first brought Anastasiya to Gozo as a surprise for her birthday. It was going to be a holiday, but in the back of my mind I knew that we might move here if things worked out. I am from Vienna, which is where we were living, while my wife is from

STYLE In-DEPtH Ukraine and I knew she missed the sea. As it turned out it was love at first sight and about six months later we made a firm decision to move here.” Anastasiya: “We fly all over the world for work, but Gozo is honestly one of the most wonderful places that we have ever come to. It doesn’t advertise itself like other places, and it’s not as polished or garish, so it has wonderful hidden charm. It’s 100 percent home now.” J: “When we’re here there isn’t really anything that we miss. We fly for a large part of our lives and live a hectic existence out of a suitcase; we use that time to experience a sense of the outside world if we really want to. We appreciate the sense of peace here, as well as the weather, the food and the friendly people. We did consider living in Malta too as we love Valletta and Mdina, but the tranquillity of Gozo won us over in the end, and we’re just a ferry ride from the mainland if we do want to get there.” A: “There’s so much to love here that we rarely venture away during our weeks in Gozo. If I want some quiet time to think I’ll head to Ramla Bay, and we both love Xlendi Bay for a romantic evening. Jan loves Kercem Cliffs too as it makes for a wonderful walk. J: “We’re very much adjusted to the pace of Gozo now; we have friends here and we’ve made a life. I would ask locals to look at the islands with open eyes and to appreciate them as the gems that they are. It’s certainly a magical place, and we’re hooked on it.” Gianni Favetti – owner of Sicilia Bella Restaurant, Mgarr “Our Maltese clients in Sicily often told us to open up a Sicilian restaurant here, and so a few weeks ago we did! I liked the island as soon as I came here and felt instantly at home because it looks and feels like Sicily did 20 years ago. It’s got a very warm and welcoming sense to it. “Life is definitely more tranquil here and I am pleased to have left the
stresses of Sicily behind me. There everything is done in a rush, while here life is more laidback and enjoyable. And there’s not even much to miss, especially as Sicily is only half-an-hour away! “Mgarr, the setting for our restaurant, already feels like home and it’s my favourite spot as I love watching the boats coming and going. I also love how friendly everyone is, they’ve made me feel very welcome. I don’t think I could live in Malta though, it’s too crowded and the atmosphere is more party oriented. Gozo is a haven for relaxation. I hope it stays exactly as it is for years to come, I don’t think the islanders should change a thing!” Dr Reshmi Vijakyakumar – Ayurveda doctor “I first came to Gozo from India with my husband, who is also an Ayurveda doctor, a few years ago. I was immediately struck by the colour of the island; it was summer at the time and the yellow of the stone contrasted so beautifully with the blue of the sea. I loved it immediately. “Life is quite different here. Most of my family is still in India, so it meant adjusting to a way of life without them. The food is also completely different, and I have adopted a local way of eating for breakfast, but still choose to eat traditionally throughout the rest of the day. My two daughters, Shredha, 7, and Sreja, 5, have adjusted to life here too and I like watching them enjoy the sense of freedom and safety. I love the fresh air too, and go for daily walks to Ta’ Pinu which is a spot I have come to relish very much. “As an Ayurveda doctor I encourage people to take a holistic approach to their lives, and Gozo lends itself very well to that. As an ancient Indian science we examine lifestyle choices and habits that can lead to ill health, and we can treat a variety of things. Ayurveda is just one of the many things that works well here and people should definitely take advantage of that.”

He’s just completed one of the toughest marathons in the world, yet is already on the lookout for his next, bigger challenge. Jo Caruana chats to Nathan Farrugia about fatherhood, bleeding feet and his determination to change the world one step at a time.

STYLE IN-DEPTH Meeting Nathan Farrugia is something of an inspiration in itself. As the chief executive and a trustee of Inspire, his day job is geared towards making a tangible difference in the lives of many children and adults with learning and physical disabilities. And, when he’s not doing that, he’s pushing himself to his physical limits to break down boundaries and simultaneously raise money for the causes which mean so much to him. Yes, definitely inspirational. “I do what I do because making a difference really does mean a lot to me,” he explains, humbly trying to sum up the reasons behind his unstoppable determination. “I am a qualified physiotherapist, so I guess I was always destined to be in a caring profession, and I’ve worked across the sector with all kinds of disabilities and conditions in my career so far. I was definitely born with a passion for pushing myself to the limit, and it is fantastic that I can combine that love with a way to raise funds and awareness.” Proving that, Nathan, along with his challenge partner Douglas Barbaro Sant, recently completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables (MDS), which saw them run 250km over six days across the harsh Moroccan desert. The pair had to carry all their supplies on their backs, while running on uneven rocky ground and sand dunes, and while enduring temperatures of up to 52 degrees. As he talks through the ups and downs of the race, Nathan whips out his iPod to show me a video clip of its highlights... and its low points. “You don’t think about the low points though,” he enthuses. “You just get on with it, and it was made better thanks to the messages I received on my satellite phone from my wife Deirdre, our two little girls Robyn and Keira, and the many people who showed their support on Facebook. A particularly hard stage was when I had to cut my own toe nails off with a blade; the pressure from running across the desert had become too much for my feet and they were literally bursting. The pain was unbearable, so cutting my nails off was the only option. Watching the clip of it now, it does look pretty grim, but at the time it was just part of what I had to do to keep running. And I was determined to keep running.” Thankfully their efforts were not in vain, and the duo successfully raised over €40,000 for the charities of their choice – Inspire, and the organisation Facing Africa, which provides

plastic surgery for children with severe facial disfigurements. “Raising funds is obviously very important to me, but it is always just a drop in the ocean when it comes to what is really needed and I prefer to focus on creating awareness and changing mindsets. While, of course, it is important to ensure, for instance, that local offices have ramps that enable people in wheelchairs to move freely through them, it is almost pointless if there are no jobs for these people when they get there. We need to start from the ground up and actually change the way people think about disabilities. “That said, raising funds for Inspire is very important to me, especially as I know exactly how much that money is needed and where every cent of it will be spent.” Nathan’s visible passion for everything that he does is something that he always
remembers having. “Ever since my childhood it’s always been a question of ‘I wonder if I can do that?’ or ‘How fast can I do it?’. I constantly look for ways to push myself. For instance, while I am scared of heights, I have bungee jumped, sky dived and gone abseiling; it’s exciting. “A passion for an active lifestyle is something I share with Deirdre and we experienced all three of those sports together. Of course she does worry when I am off doing extreme things, like the MDS, because the element of danger is always there; but she knows I am prepared. I am definitely a family man and I would never do anything irresponsible that could risk hurting my children. Having kids certainly grounds you. When you’re out there pushing yourself you realise that all you really need is basic food and water, the drive to get through it, your health and the people you are

missing back home. That’s more than enough for me. “I grew up in a family of four brothers so adventure has always been a way of life, especially as our parents always encouraged us to get out there and test ourselves. It’s a method that Deirdre and I are currently using on our own daughters. We’re very keen to encourage them to explore their boundaries. We don’t push them in any way, but we certainly encourage them. If they want to climb a wall I let them do it, but I do want to know that there’s soft soil on one side and shrubbery on the other just in case! The safety net will always be there for them, but I don’t necessarily want them to know that. We want them to have their wits about them so that they can achieve whatever they want to in life.” This year Nathan and Deirdre will be celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary. “We’re planning to go back to our roots for a couple of days – camping! We’re off to Sicily with a tent on our backs. It’s the sort of activity that we would have enjoyed way back when we first met, so it’s wonderful to be able to make time for it today. Sport was definitely something that brought the two of us together,
24
as we were both lucky enough to represent Malta on an international platform through our sporting endeavours, and we still find plenty of time for it today. We enjoy travelling as much as we can, especially to off-thebeaten-track destinations where we can have adventures.” When travelling I am conscious of my environmentally responsibilities though; I’d actually love to cycle everywhere in Malta but I don’t think it is safe enough. Green travel is something that I hope improves locally in the coming years.” And Nathan’s relaxed sentiments extend to his sense of style. “Style is very important to me as I believe there’s an element of respect that comes from dressing appropriately. I’m very relaxed when it comes to my wardrobe and most comfortable in a pair of jeans and a polo shirt, but I do think that your wardrobe should reflect a little of what’s going on inside you. If you come across as unkempt or careless, it definitely reflects on your character. “When it comes to stylish ‘guilty pleasure’, watches are one of my passions, and I’m fascinated by how many working parts can be slotted into such a tiny space! I respect the artistry that goes into them, it’s truly

fascinating – and of course, they look great too.” And as for Nathan’s next extreme challenge? “I’m working on it!” he grins. “Douglas and I are already thinking about it, but it’s not going to be easy to find one that’s right for us. Most of the marathons out there that are more extreme than MDS pose serious potential risks which thus go against our ethos; we don’t want to negatively affect those around us by putting ourselves in danger or by being away for long stretches of time. Simultaneously though, we know that we have to keep upping our challenges in order to encourage people to look at what we’re doing and listen to our message. “We’ll wait and see, but we’re already swapping emails with ideas and there is potential out there. We’re both so grateful to our families for supporting us in this, and believe that it demonstrates that everyone really can make a difference if they put their minds to something. Whether you’re fundraising, volunteering or simply changing the way people think for the better, you’re helping to achieve a more open world and a far better society. And that is what makes it all worthwhile.”

According to UN statistics, an estimated 2.5 million people around the world are in forced labour as a result of trafficking, and this includes sexual exploitation. These people are reported to be trafficked from 127 countries for exploitation in 137 countries. The majority of trafficking victims are between 18 and 24 years of age. Malta is not immune to this phenomenon, the fastest growing criminal activity in the world.
Women for Sale Words by Miriam Dalli
21-year-old Valeriya left Ukraine when her boyfriend broke up with her. Her measly salary of €25-per-week, which she earned as a salesgirl in a clothes shop, was not enough for a girl her age to get by on decently. When a friend of hers told her that, in Malta, she could work for more money, she did not think twice about moving over. Her ticket, passport and visa were taken care of by her friend and a few days later she was on a flight and on her way here. Little did she know what lay in wait for her. Valeriya recounts the early days of her arrival in Malta. “Things changed completely a few days after I arrived here,” she mutters. “I was hosted by a man who later turned out to be my pimp. He took
my passport and the little money I had and didn’t even let me go out.” Valeriya ended up locked in an apartment under continuous surveillance, meeting only the men that were sent to her by her pimp. On some occasions she even had to have sex with 15 different men in one night, and often she would work for more than 12 hours a day. She would be paid €40 for a full night of work, but suspects her clients were paying far more for her services. Valeriya had arrived in Malta hoping for a better future and dreaming of a well-paid job. Instead, she was sucked into a world of nightmares, one that she would never dare to speak about back home.

Sadly, she is just one of many girls who fall victim to human trafficking – a complex phenomenon fuelled by the tremendous growth in the global sex market. According to ECPAT International, a global network of organisations and individuals working together to eliminate trafficking, human trafficking is the third largest criminal activity in the world, lagging only slightly behind the international trade in illegal drugs and arms trafficking. Their definition of human trafficking is ‘the movement of people by force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting the victims either sexually, for labour purposes or for organ removals’. Between 2003 and today, 22 female victims of human trafficking have been identified in Malta and, within the same period, 32 people were arraigned in court and accused of human trafficking. Assistant police commissioner Michael Cassar says that girls who become victims of this offence are often coerced and deceived into prostitution. Most of them are young, mainly from Eastern European countries, and find themselves in Malta while searching for a better future but are eventually forced into prostitution instead. The first reported case of human trafficking in Malta dates back to
that today dealers have found other ways and means to remain in the trade without the threat of the police breathing down their necks. “This is a very lucrative business,” he maintains, “which is extremely profitable for those involved. I find it extremely difficult to believe that those who were involved in this criminal ring are no longer part of it.” In Malta prostitution is not considered illegal if carried out in a private place or a place which is not accessible to the public. Thus, having sex for money is not illegal locally. What is considered as illegal is loitering, soliciting and living off prostitution. This means that traffickers bringing foreign girls into Malta for prostitution purposes are probably finding consenting girls who are ready to have sex for money. AC Cassar states that this modus operandi does not fall under the definition of ‘trafficking in human beings’. Patchareeboon Sakulpitakphon, from ECPAT International, states that Malta is considered as a destination country for young women trafficked for sexual purposes from Eastern European countries such as Ukraine, Russia and Romania. She maintains that, in Malta, concerns have been raised on the lack of implementation by the state to curb this activity. She quotes the EU’s Hague Programme Action
A Russian girl was deceived by a local married couple who welcomed her into their home as though they were her friends. Once they gained her trust, they kept her locked up for months and forced her to have sex with the men they used to bring to her.
2003. A Russian girl was deceived by a local married couple who welcomed her into their home as though they were her friends. Once they gained her trust, they kept her locked up for months and forced her to have sex with the men they used to bring to her. In yet another case, a girl from Ukraine met a Maltese man over the internet and he lured her to Malta with the promise of marriage. Two weeks after her arrival here, he forced her into prostitution by locking her up in a holiday apartment, keeping her under constant surveillance and sending her clients every day. When neighbours began to suspect that something was not quite right, he ‘sold’ her to another dealer for around €1,600. Some girls were ‘sold’ once every three months, moving from one pimp to another. And if you think that these traffickers and pimps are convicted criminals, then you are wrong. Most of them are normal workers or business people, married couples, or the sort of people you would comfortably trust in an instant. The police in Malta have even arraigned two police officers who were involved in crimes of this sort, one of whom was handed down a prison sentence. AC Cassar adds that, in 2009 and 2010, there were no reported cases of human trafficking for sexual exploitation; however, he is convinced

Plan against crime prevention, stating that Malta has been named as the ‘EU’s most lagging state’, since it has yet to implement 35 percent of the Union’s anti-crime measures, including those related to human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children and young persons. She adds that, to date, Malta has no specific national referral mechanism or system for combating human trafficking. In addition, there is no formally established system for cooperation with other countries or referral for victims, other than the helpline and basic support services operated by Appogg. Faced by this fast growing criminal activity, ECPAT International is currently working together with The Body Shop on a campaign entitled ‘Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People’. This campaign is aimed at empowering children, young people and the general public to understand the issue of human trafficking, particularly child sex trafficking. Ms Sakupitakphon insists that a lot needs to be done to eradicate this rising criminal activity. “We want to make sure that the voices of all those involved in our campaign are heard by the decision-makers and those in power. We want to see the changes needed to protect children and young people around the world,” she affirms.

STYLE BEAUTY Step 1 Beat the heat with a foundation that doesn’t succumb to humidity. Guerlain Extreme Foundation was used to create the perfect canvas for this make-up look, and is ideal for medium coverage in high temperatures. This was complemented by Guerlain Precious Light concealer, which adds luminosity and eliminates dull shadows and imperfections.
Step 2 Go for strong eyes this summer. We used three shades of shadow to accentuate eyes in the hues of the season: gold, bronze and brown.
Step 3 We added contour to the eyes with a touch of Guerlain Eye Pencil, which helps eyes to stand out.
Step 4 The look was strengthened further with wide eyes created by Guerlain Le De Mascara, which lengthens and defines lashes.
Step 5 The sun kissed glow was created using Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons, which is enriched with pure gold for a tailor-made, sculpt effect. To brighten complexions and even the skin tone, we used Guerlain Meteorites Balls.
Step 6 Finally, complete the look with Guerlain’s Terracotta Lipgloss, to complement the lookwith a natural gold shine.

If you haven’t come across James Galea yet, Google him now. His plethora of mind-boggling magic tricks – which have, aside from other things, made him an internet sensation – have also secured him the coveted title of Australia’s Number One magician. He spends his days touring incredible venues including Las Vegas and across Australia – that is, when he’s not playing tricks on the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Ellen DeGeneres. And to top it off, with the help of that cheeky smile, he’s managed to make magic incredibly alluring.

What’s the Malta connection? My dad’s from Mosta and my mum’s from St Julian’s – they both came over to Australia when they were young and I was completely raised over here. I still have lots of relatives in Malta though, and look forward to visiting. How often have you been to Malta? Twice – when I was 12 and again when I was 14. I’d love to experience the islands again as an adult as I’m sure I’d have an amazing time. What are your memories of the island? My dad took me around them – I’m pretty sure we went to every church! I have fond memories of my nanna and nannu cooking for me and I got to meet my whole extended family. It was a really wonderful experience. How did you get into magic? Was there a family connection? None at all! I met a magician when I was 14, who later turned out to

be a professional conman. I was able to pick up incredible skills from him. While my magician friends were learning to make a hankie disappear from an old magician, I was learning how to steal watches and deal aces from the bottom of the deck from a professional card shark. Who was your professional idol? When I was young, it was David Copperfield. I used to get so excited when I saw his shows on TV. Did you ever trick family or friends when you were growing up? Absolutely! I would practice stealing watches from my mum while she was cooking. I think she must have thought she was losing her mind because she could never find anything! How did you get to be Australia’s Number One magician? When I was 19 I won the title of Australia’s Best Close-Up Magician. Since then it’s been a whirl of international TV shows and sell-out

performances across Australia for my tours ‘I Hate Rabbits’ and ‘Lying Cheating Bastard’. These high-profile events later secured me the title of Australia’s Number One Magician. You’re also quite a funny man, how do you merge comedy with magic? Very often I find that people take magic way too seriously, and I prefer to have fun with my audience. I like to laugh and I like to make my audiences laugh – the comedy was integrated organically. What do you love most about magic? The looks on people's faces! It's a really amazing thing to be able to make people across the age groups smile with the same innocence and enjoyment while watching the same thing. Does magic ever get you into trouble? Well, I can’t actually make money appear out of nowhere, read minds or fly – but if I could I’m sure it would get me into a lot of trouble! Having been trained by a professional conman, what sort of tricks did you pick up? Well, the line between a conman and a magician is a pretty fine one. Instead of tricking people out of their money by knowing where the aces are in a deck, I use that same information to entertain them. I still use many of the techniques and methods that I picked up back then in my performances today. How did you come to perform in Las Vegas? My manager gave me a call and said ‘I have some good news’. It was good news indeed. Las Vegas is quite magical in general – what were your experiences of it? It was a very surreal experience. It had always been my dream to play in Vegas, so I smiled a lot that week. It is truly is a magical place. I found it very hard to sleep there; the city certainly doesn't! Do you think magic is back in style? I’m not sure, but it’s certainly an art form that seems to intrigue a lot of people. I hope that it sees a resurgence in popular culture over the next few years. You recently performed on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show in America.Which other high profile people have you enjoyed tricking? There have been countless ones, but two of the ones that stand out are Sir Richard Branson and the Australian Prime Minister. Why do you ‘Hate Rabbits’? What was your inspiration for that tour? I don’t really hate rabbits! In fact there was a disclaimer to that effect on the poster for the show. It was a name that I came up with to show people that this was no ordinary magic show. In fact it completely challenges people's perceptions on what a magician is supposed to be, wear, do and say. Tell us, how autobiographical was your other show, ‘Lying Cheating Bastard’? After telling people the story of how I got started in magic and of the guy who taught me, they would always comment on what an interesting story it was. ‘Lying Cheating Bastard’ is the
theatrical version! Does a talent for magic ever give you the upper hand? I never use it for evil – though I am tempted to every day! (That’s a nice watch you’re wearing, by the way... ). Can you let us in on any behind the scenes secrets? It’s not real! Any hope of a European tour – ideally one that includes Malta? I would absolutely love to get to Malta and to perform there while on a European tour. At this stage it looks like 2011 could be the year it happens!
Well, I can’t actually make money appear out of nowhere, read minds or fly – but if I could I’m sure it would get me into a lot of trouble!

LiFE ON THE HIGH SEAS As the local Fairline distributor for the past 28 years, Joe Satariano has never looked beyond the specialist British boat builder’s fleet when shopping around. He sold his Fairline Targa 52 in the spring, so what will his next boat be? Text by Malcolm J. Naudi Photography by Brian Grech
One of Joe Satariano’s early childhood memories is that of visiting his uncle’s boathouse in Spinola Bay and taking out a small luzzu for a fishing trip. As he grew up, his love for boats developed and he always had a small boat of sorts, either a speedboat or a dinghy. He recounts that his love for large yachts started when he was in his 30s, when he bought a second hand Fairline Phantom 32, which today is 33 years old. “This boat is still around in our waters. She was a fantastic boat, without any problems
and, despite her age, no signs of osmosis in the hull, which is common on a number of other boat builders.” He kept the Phantom 32 for a single season but as a result took over the Fairline franchise. “I have owned no fewer than seven or eight Fairlines over the years. Each one has performed excellently and is still around,” Mr Satariano says. “One of my favourite models was the Squadron 52, which I bought in 1996. This was a great boat, fully equipped, with loads of outside space, three

double cabins and a crew cabin. She also had a large flybridge, with an ample sunbathing area and a barbeque corner. We had a great time with that boat. “On her maiden voyage, we cruised down from the South of France and stopped in some of the finest resorts including St Tropez, Tahiti Beach, Corsica, Monte Carlo, Capri and Porto Cervo.” For Mr Satariano, the ‘season’ starts in May and extends until the end of October, although he also uses his boats on nice days throughout winter. He has travelled extensively with his boats – to the Aeolian Islands, Taormina and Syracuse. “On my last boat, the Fairline Targa 52, our best trip was to Capri, Positano and the entire Amalfi coast down to Lipari and Syracuse,” he says. “I owned this boat for three seasons. It has an excellent cruising speed of 35 knots plus, and yet is extremely economical. We would leave the yacht marina at 7.30am and be in Sicily by 9am; on some occasions we would go to Sicily and return on the same day.” A feature that is common to all Fairlines is the boats’ hull. “You feel so secure you hardly have to reduce your speed when going into a head sea. I remember on one of our trips to Capri, with eight people on board, we kept going in a head sea at 27 knots. The boat was extremely comfortable without any pounding whatsoever.
“I actually watched this boat being built: how the fibreglass was laid by hand and the build-up of the hull. It is an impressive procedure. The hull ends up with thicknesses of three inches in areas. The fact that Fairline never uses robots for this process is one of the many reasons why its vessels are rated as some of the best boats available on the market.” With Mr Satariano being in the market for a new boat, there are two models falling within his budget: the new Squadron 55 and the new Targa 58. The Squadron 55 is considered to be one of Fairline’s most successful boat launches to date, with 35 boats sold since its launch in Autumn, 2008. Voted Motor Boat of the Year 2009, this boat has two guest cabins and a grand master cabin, an extremely large saloon dining area and galley, and a large flybridge with lots of sunbathing space. The Targa 58 made her world debut at the London International Boat Show 2010 and includes a number of unique systems – all seen for the first time in the boating industry; a sports cruiser that will set the standards for years to come. But Mr Satariano refuses to be drawn on which model he will choose. “I should be in a position to decide which model to go for within the next few months,” he concludes.

Style on Sunday takes life outdoors with a selection of stunning products in a variety of mixed-and-matched materials. Styling by interior designer and artist Luisa Diacono Photography by briangrech
beSIDE THE SEA
Generally, when looking at an interior space, we simply see the completed composition and tend to overlook the details. This issue, we’ve focused our attention on the important detail decisions which will determine the overall success of a design. Although there are many factors to consider, including space, light, function, colour and proportions, here we’re only focusing on materials and simply scratching the surface of how to make different substances work together.

Combining And Contrasting Materials The natural world is full of different materials, and the way nature combines and contrasts itself has provided great influence for designers to interpret that contrast in their work. For instance the rough texture of a tree bark contrasts beautifully with the sleek, smooth and crisp finish of the leaves. In interior design this can be translated to the way in which old stone found in a farmhouse can be combined and contrasted beautifully with white gypsum or clear glass. One material does not overpower the other, but works well with it to bring out the best in each other.
74
Wood This is a classic natural material that never dates, however what does change is the variety of finishes, stains and wood veins used. Today wood is being combined with stainless steel and stone to give it a more contemporary twist, as it adds warmth and that natural organic element that softens the rigidity of such materials.

Glass With so many technological advances in the glass industry, new opportunities have opened up for using glass in the home. Available in different colours and finishes, its purity and versatility make it easy to use and combine in many different ways. Whether for decorative or functional purposes, glass is becoming more and more popular in architecture and interior design.

Light and Materials The way light reacts to different materials is a crucial factor to consider when choosing the right materials for your space. Reflective surfaces including glass, mirror, polished stainless steel, lacquered finishes and polished tiles carry and reflect more light. However, wood, stone, metal, concrete and granite all absorb light, therefore creating the right balance between your reflective materials and absorbent materials for a cosy, homely atmosphere.
78
Metal This material has been used in so many styles and finishes. It’s tough and durable, and comes in many different forms, it can be elegantly twisted in a baroque style as well as used in industrial settings. Today stainless steel is being integrated into the home, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms, and has also become very popular when combined in furniture.

Fabric The choice is never ending when it comes to fabric and most of the time we tend to combine fabrics based on their hues or patterns. However, besides those obvious considerations, I believe the beauty of fabric to be in the different textures and weaves that are available. Even if you want to opt for a monochrome, neutral palette, you can create interest and contrast by combining different fabrics together, including linens and silks, velvet and satin, and cottons combined with rich taffetas.

This piece, called ‘Introspection’, represents my evolving style. It highlights a shift towards simpler forms and allows more of the stone to flow naturally.
One of the globigerina limestone blocks, better known as ‘franka’, hoisted into position and ready for carving.
These are my early designs, known as ‘maquettes’ and made from local clay. I am self-taught so in the early days I would make items from clay to simplify the process and to allow me to experiment.
A finished piece – ‘Infinity’.
Chisels are used for carving. It usually takes me around six days to complete a larger statue.

Maltese Stone Sculptor Photography by briangrech
This is a work in progress with my pencil designs sketched onto it. It is still at the carving stage, but will be called ‘Endless Love’ when it is finished.
‘Despair’ – one of my fertility goddess sculptures, inspired by Malta’s Prehistoric Temple Period.
All my ideas, thoughts and moods are captured and sketched onto these little pieces of stone and kept in my official design book. I’m inspired by everything – stones, architecture, rubble walls. A traditional hand-held axe, better known as ‘mannaret’, to dress and cut the blocks.
Wooden mallet used when chiselling the limestone.
These are homemade files, known as ‘raxketta’ and made from wood and steel nails. I use them to smooth the stone down and create rounded forms.
These three grades of sandpaper are used to finalise the smoothing process and give every piece a tactile finish.
