BEACON YARDS URBANISM Fall 2014
Project Description: The Beacon Yards: DeNovo Urbanism Research Studio focused on the urban design issues raised by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT’s) proposal for the redesign of the Allston/ Cambridge interchange of the Massachusetts Turnpike (MassPike) in Boston. After fully studying the complexities of land ownership, real estate development potential, and the neighborhood politics surrounding the site, ten graduate students worked with Tim Love to produce a single comprehensive master plan for land owned by MassDOT, Harvard University, and Boston University. Their collective vision is centered on a new commuter rail/transit station, an integrated open space/stormwater network, and a hierarchy of new streets that have been designed to accommodate a fully integrated range of transportation modes as strongly recommended by Boston’s Complete Streets guidelines and demanded by project stakeholders. BOSTON UNIVERSITY LABS Spring 2014 Project Description: This project is a dry laboratory building for a difficult site on the BU campus. The project, completed with Joseph Pucci, focuses on future use planning of the building as well as reacting to the various datums and site conditions. The building bridges over the Mass Pike, allowing for an increased connection to Commonwealth Ave as well as using a double height space to create an identity for the campus. The building then uses a constructed landscape on the rear side to connect the multiple levels and allow for large lab spaces beneath. The major focus of this project was the integration of building systems and creating a strong future use scenario. By using a double skinned facade circulation space along the building we were able to integrate the majority of comfort and structural systems within it. In conjunction with this by placing vertical elements in a divisive way along this it allowed for an implied spatial planning for many possible uses that will not hinder the goals achieved with these systems. LYNN HOUSING Fall 2013
Project Description: This multi-unit housing complex was developed as part of a proposed redevelopment master plan for the Lynn waterfront. The building organizes a diverse mix of unit types around a central courtyard located on a parking plinth. There is a retail frontage along the major road to the East, a walk up unit conditions facing other units across a residential street, and townhouse units lining the park on the West facade. Above this, a mix of studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom units create two separate masses that step down towards the park. With the opportunity of waterfront views the facade feature many large fenestrations as well as plays with pushing and pulling the volume in order to create exterior spaces and view corridors. A major focus was the access to exterior open space for each unit. In addition to large communal open spaces on the upper levels each unit has a private balcony. Townhouses have private yards and the walkup units have direct access to the plinth. ASSEMBLY SQUARE Fall 2012
Project Description: This project was an urban master plan and development for an area of Somerville’s Assembly Square, which was under construction at the time. The site had a sense of being closed off from the surrounding context, but it was discovered that only a 30’ change in elevation would allow for an inhabitant to be able to visually connect to the waterfront and surrounding context allowing them to locate oneself. This is what lead to the idea of a raised central boulevard that also accommodate the sites parking needs below. This then resulted in a careful study of view corridors from this central park and boulevard as well as the need to create a taxonomy of vertical connection strategies to be deployed along this area. In order to maximize the usability of these spaces it was important to incorporate other uses and connections in these spaces to make them more than just stairs.

CAMBRIDGE LIBRARY Fall 2010
Project Description: This project for a local branch library negotiated a unique site as well as a need for open space protected from a busy urban street. The building is organized around the circulation of the typical library user. The main volume in the center houses reading spaces and is flanked by two stacks towers that protect the glass central volume and open spaces from the busy Massachusetts Ave and other parking urbanism. The base of the central volume houses the librarian desk and computer stations for the quick user and for locating literature. The user then ascends a sculptural stair that is shaped to direct the user from it to the stack locations flanking it. Once the user locates their material from those stacks they can the return to the reading space that spirals up alongside but separate from the stair, that they have been encountering on their previous circulation.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CENTER CAFE PROJECT Fall 2009
Project Description: This project was for a small cafe in the tree colonnade in the iconic Christian Science Center plaza. The focus of this project was to the ability to include all the functions of a cafe with minimal disruption to the existing conditions. The building is a simple massing that plays off of the geometries of the site. All the buildings volumes and the seating areas are all based off of the existing implicit logics of the site. The building has two volumes; one the solid back of house bar and the other a glass seating area positioned for views through it in order to lighten the building. The roof is a glass geometric shape derived from the site that floats above it and allows for the tree colonnade to grow though it. Seating space then opens up in front of the cafe allowing for a connection to the reflecting pool and across.
