Creating a Realistic Wedding Budget G29he average cost of a wedding in Kern County is projected to be $28,465 in 2014, up slightly from 2013, according to "The Wedding Report': an organization that compiles wedding statistics from across the USA using data from government agencies and statistical analysis gleaned from Internet sites. There are expected to be 4,672 weddings in 2014, some bigger, some smaller, but getting that big scary number out there right up front will help you prepare a budget that works for YOUR wedding. The first step in making your own realistic budget is to understand what things cost on average in our area. The following is a breakdown of 2012 costs for the County of Kern: Attire & Accesories Beauty &Spa Entertainment Flowers & Decorations Gifts & Favors Invitations Jewelry Photography & Video Planner I Consultant Venue, Catering & Rentals

$1,806 $ 140 $1,318 $1 ,637 $ 703 $ 904 $4,292 $3,161 $1 ,720 $12,371

The average number of guests was 136.

The quickest and easiest way to trim the budget is to trim the guest list; less people equals less catering and smaller venue, which can save about a third of their costs. But there are other ways to keep the costs down as well; smart shopping, having a relative sponsor the cost of an area, say decor, as your wedding gift, or even taking on doing some DIY projects. Successful budgeting starts with deciding which things are the most important. Put those items at the top of the list and work your way down. Keep accurate up-to-date records of the expenditures (no fudging!) to see the progress. If you really want something over the budget, make up the difference: with an extra part-time job, packing a lunch, or even doing without Starbucks for one day a week .... it all adds up to big savings. Ask your hired vendors about payments; most offer no-interest schedules that will avoid putting anything on a credit card. Most importantly, establish an open and honest dialogue with your fiance.

- PAGE 6 -

Date-Setting SJ:rategies ~e ring will barely hit your finger before people begin to ask "When is the Big Day?"

At first, vague responses like "next year" or "after I graduate" will buy you some time, but getting that date set quickly is critical to establishing your time line. Here are some things to consider before getting that Wedding Countdown Clock started:

Budget If you are paying for the bulk of the wedding costs yourselves, you absolutely must consider how long it will take to save the appropriate amount of money. The same applies if the family(ies) are helping. Giving yourself enough time to save for the wedding in advance will avoid walking into your first marital days under a mountain of debt. Go through the budget worksheet to estimate your costs, and then act accordingly. Preparation and communication will avoid stress for everyone involved.

Work I School Schedules Consider your own as well as those of your key guests. If you are planning a destination or if a significant number of guests will need to travel, avoid peaks when ticket prices are higher; holidays and the first two weeks of summer are particularly expen:.:.s.iv :. .;...:e...:. . ---..- ..... Weather Kern County has relatively (at least by California standards) dramatic weather. Remember that an indoor event won't completely avoid weatherrelated travel complications. Extreme heat in the summer periodically leads to wildfires on the grapevine. In the winter months, snow and ice can close the mountain passes. BUDGET BUSTER TIP

Consider scheduling a Friday or Sunday wedding. It can save you hundreds of dollars in "off-peak"discounts from the location and some service providers.

Guest List Management G27"Ceping the Guest List to a reasonable number is hard. The family and friends you choose to include in your special day, whether in the wedding party or as guests, are the key people in your life. You will look to them for advice, guidance, and counsel.

2. List as five stars the guests that are MUST-HAVE, and go down from there. It's never "equal" on both sides of the families; just try to be courteous of one another and the family's needs. After the names, write down how many people in their party. 3. Add the total BODIES not names. If you're under the goal number, stop here and move to step #5. If you're over, continue to step 4.

We all have day-to-day people in our lives; the grocery store clerk, the mail-person; the counter guy/girl at the gym; and let's not even get into all those hundreds of friends we all have on Facebook. We feel connected to all sorts of people. The ones who are part of your wedding, however, will cost about $100 or so (guest plus one) in the budget for food, beverage, rentals, decor, guest favors, etc.

4. Elimination Time. The easiest to rule out are children that are not in the couple's immediate family. Next on the elminations are those that are too far to likely make the journey. 5. Ask the parents on both sides for the remaining 10% of your max (that would be twelve guests, or six names, using our example.) There are almost always a few "musts" from the parents that will be a surprise to you and your fiance. 5. Make two lists: "X' list to the limit of the guest count goal; rest are "B"s.

Get to the magic number by: 6. Mail out all the "X' List invites. 1. Determine the maximum number of guests you and/or your facility can handle. Take 90% of that number as your goal. If your max is 125 guests, try for 112 people at first. Keep in mind about 15% of wedding invitations are declined for some reason, schedule conflicts or travel constraints, usually. ~

7. For every "X' list that declines, mail "B" list invitation out. Explain to those that didn't make the "1\' list if necessary, that you're limited due to the size of the facility or budget. Most will be very understanding.

The Wedding Party

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF C & B PHOTOGRAPHY

Being in the Wedding Party is an honor and a responsibility. Here are the basic roles of each attendant, whether male or female. ATTENDANT OF HONOR: Maid of Honor, Matron of Honor, Best Man The number 1 attendant go-to person. He or she will be asked to help with all aspects of the wedding; advising on wardrobe choices and gifts for the other attendants, organizing social events, i.e. the Engagement and Bachelor(ette) parties. May also supervise the rest of the Wedding Attendants. ATTENDANTS: Bridesmaids & Groomsmen Assist in various capacities as requested by the wedding couple and the Honor Attendants. Typical duties will include deliveries and returns, set-up, clean-up and other duties as assigned.

JUNIOR ATTENDANTS: Jr. Bridesmaids, Jr. Groomsmen Ages 12-16 with similar but reduced duties to adult Attendants. FLOWERGIRL (boy or girl) Usually 5 or under, distributes flowers along aisle just before the bride walks down. RING BEARER ( boy or girl) Child under 5 who holds decorative rings on a pillow during ceremony (actual rings go on pinkie fingers of the adult attendant.) Walks down with the flowergirl.

- PAGE 11 -

Honorary Jobs Sometimes it's a challenge to include everyone who wants to help with the wedding. For those close relatives that aren't in the Wedding Party, try a more short-term job as an "Honor Attendant". Guest Book Attendant

Honorary Speaker or Reader

Has everyone sign in and transfers the book from ceremony to reception site, if needed.

Used during ceremony to read scriptures or dedications.

Gift Coordinator

Musical Performer or Soloist

Directs guests to leave gifts at designated area, firmly affixing card to gift.

Play or sing during ceremony, transition or at the reception.

Candle Lighters

Honorary Toast Giver

Light candles at the altar or reception tables.

A person other than the Best Man who is prepared to toast at the reception.

Parental Roles

As with most traditions, the roles of the parents has changed and adapted to new family situations. Now, more than 80% of couples pay the majority of the wedding costs themselves. It is still traditional, however, to honor family with roles like walking down the aisle, (Dad, Step-Dad, son or brother can be used). And hosting the rehearsal dinner still traditionally falls on the groom's side. It all comes down to what fits for you and your family. -PAGE 12-

Bridal Shows :98ridal Shows are a great way to see different products and services for a wedding all under one roof. For a short time commitment of 3-4 hours, you can save hours of time and gallons of gas running to various store fronts. It's a great resource to gather ideas and spend a little time "wedding shopping" in a low-stress environment. There are usually 30-90 businesses featured at a Wedding Show. They are usually held in hotel ballrooms, arenas, or fairgrounds, depending on the size. Businesses are set up with booths where they can show their wares and meet clients.

Who attends a bridal or wedding show? Brides, grooms, friends and, of course, the mothers. A bridal show is much more than the fashions shown on stage. Going as a group gives the "Wedding Team" a chance to get to know each other. Yes, there is still a long list of things to do, try on, purchase and put together; but there's room to share a laugh. Gather the group, relax, sip some champagne and indulge a little - you're planning a a celebration of love!

Choosing the Perfect Ceremony Location Gifoday's brides and grooms can say "I Do" almost anywhere ... amid the legacy of stained glass at the family church, in a beautiful garden, atop a snowy mountain resort, in a glittering chandelier-lit hotel ballroom ... anything is possible.

Put simply: the romance of a snowy cliffside might be of lesser importance than having your parents be able to make the trip.

Ceremony Venue Considerations Bride's Dressing Area Is there a private dressing room for the Bride and Bridal Party? How many mirrors are there? Are there adequate plug-ins and counter space for all the girls? What about areas to hang the wedding gown and the other dresses; keeping in mind that if everyone is dressing onsite, there will still need to be space for their street clothes, purses, cell phones, etc. to be stored during the ceremony. Groom's Dressing Area Not nearly as big of a deal as the Bride's, you'll still need to keep the groom, groomsmen and dads in mind as far as places to dress and stash their personal belongings.

--fr~

~

:_,t..,..

Photograph Possibilities Are there areas besides the staging of the ceremony itself suitable for photos? Where are they? How many people can be accommodated? Keep in mind that outdoor venues are subject to light: if the wedding is at sunset there are limited (if any) photo opportunities afterwards. There are alternatives, of course, so be sure to go over the details with your photographer. Seating How many guests will the room comfortably hold and how are they seated? Fixed seating (like pews), may look and feel very full at only a percentage of the maximum, depending on how far groups sit apart.

Ceremony Venue Considerations Parking

Decorations

Verify that parking is adequate for your guests; the quantity of it and the accessibility to the venue.

What is included and what are you allowed to bring in? Are there any restrictions? For example, some facilities don't allow fresh flower petals ~ (staining); or open flame candles (fire risk) or affixing ...... anything on the walls to avoid ....J 搂 damage.

However, parking is a bigger concern when it comes to the Bride, Groom and the Wedding Party. If you plan a dramatic entrance to the ceremony, is there a protected area for the limousine, horsedrawn carriage, classic car or party bus to pull right up in front?

路=

There may be things you need to bring in to add to the ambience: an aisle runner, flowers, fabric or silk flowers for the aisle chairs, signage for family areas. Archway, podium or uplighting. Then there are the usual personalized items like the guest book, pen, unity candles or sand ceremony setup.

The same applies for your exit. Is there a way for bride and groom to be whisked away without making a 500 yard trek through the parking lot? Keep in mind the wedding party will be in the same boat, because they will be needed for photos after the ceremony.

Ceremony Venue Considerations Is the Officiant Included? The person who performs the ceremony and signs the license may be part of the ceremony rental package. He or she could be a Pastor, Reverend, Deacon, Priest, Preacher, Minister, Rabbi, etc.; or one without any religious ties, a "non -denominational" officiant. All must be approved by the State of California to solemnize marriages. If you hire your own, be sure to check their qualifications thoroughly.

Staff on Premises Will there be staff from the facility on the premises for your Wedding Day? If so, confirm the hours, get a name and personal cell phone number for them. Meet with that person him or herself personally and discuss what they will be doing on that day.

If not, get a map of the location of light switches, thermostats, brooms, etc. and an emergency contact number.

Ceremony Venue Considerations Sound Equipment

You will need some sort of microphone system so everyone can hear the exchange of vows. Microphones are only useful when you have speakers as well. Although there's no dancing, you'll still need music at the ceremony; whether live or recorded. At a minimum, there is background music as the guests arrive, a song for the bridesmaids as they come down the aisle, and another song for the Bride's Processional. You may have musical cues during the ceremony iteself. Finally, you will need a recessional for the bride, groom and wedding party to come back up the aisle, and exit music for the guests.

Most churches have a sound system wired in, but this will require access to the equipment as well as a sound board ~-~ operator. If the location does not have a system in place, you'll need to rent one.

e

~

In non-church environments, -l most people opt for a mobile disc jockey. An experienced wedding DJ will have all the sound equipment, music, plus the experience to serve as an emcee. Though the officiant will be on the mic for the ceremony, prior to that guests need to be instructed to take a seat. After the wedding, the emcee will direct them to exit to the reception.

~er all the formality of the ceremony, it's time to kick off those heels, loosen those ties and CELEBRATE! So, how do you choose where to eat, drink and be merry? If you're planning on using a location other than that of the ceremony, you'll need a Reception Venue. Like ceremonies, receptions can be held almost anywhere; a banquet hall, hotel ballroom, historical sight or even outdoors. In this case, however, you'll need to incorporate the issues of food and drink; the taste and service of both.

In the case of two different venues, consider the distance from one to the other. The perfect location should be easy for the guests to find. Keep in mind that photos are only part of the delay before the arrival of the Wedding Party. There are personal items, decor, gifts and guest book to transfer. The bridal party typically arrives 45 minutes or more after the first guest at the reception. It's therefore critical to have someone in place to greet the guests and welcome them in your absence. This is usually a function of your DJ or other entertainment.

-PAGE26-

Reception Venue Considerations Venue Capacity & Food Service One of the first criteria to consider is the size of the venue. Unique to the Reception, however, size also includes the plans to prepare and serve food. Hotels and restaurants are priced per meal and the room may be "free". Halls, museums and rental facilities charge for the building itself, but then the client is responsible for bringing in the catering and beverages. At first glance, it seems cheaper to rent a facility and add the food via caterer. However, when you add the cost of the catering plus essential rentals (tables, chairs and servingware), not to mention decorations, the price tags are comparable.

661-831-0867

The venue must be considered in its capacity for guests, food service and dance areas. Shopping will involve seeing the facility set up to feed and celebrate with a group of comparable size. Questions to ask include: Where is the food prepped and served? Buffet tables or staging area for plated service will both take space. Ask where the cake table is normally set up. Is there a bar or beverage area? Where is the dance floor? Where does the DJ or band set up? How many guest tables will be used and what is the

Reception Venue Considerations What Is Included?

There are many variations of the standard "package price". Be sure you know exactly what you're supposed to get for the contract price, and be prepared to cover anything else through alternative resources. Some things are even required, but not provided by, the facility (though they may offer a referral source). Catering & Menu: If the food is part of your package, be sure the menu is clearly outlined in the final contract, from appetizers to beverages and dessert.

Beverages: What beverages are served with the food? What, if any, alcohol is served? Is there a cash bar or will you be hosting the cost for your guests? Equipment: Tables, chairs, floor, lighting (uplighting, dimmer switches, etc.), tableware, servingware, etc. Linens & Decor: Are the tables draped in your colors? What about the chairs? Any other decor offered as part of the facility?

Reception Venue Contract Notes Your contract should clearly outline the inclusions, exclusions and parameters or extent of the agreement. Times: Set-up, event and clean-up hours. Keep in mind that the reception will have to be ready to go way before everyone needs to be on-site for the ceremony. Parking: Is there a parking lot on the property? Will there be a charge for parking within walking distance of the facility? Is there a Valet Parking option? Security Guards: It may sound strange to consider "security" as part of a wedding celebration, but many facilities require it. It's less about bad guys than it is about insurance requirements.

Liability Insurance: Most facilities carry at least $1 million. Many also require proof of insurance from any vendors you hire to be on their premises. Emergency Provisions What happens if it rains and you are using an outdoor venue? What if the power fails or "trips"? On a smaller scale, what if someone breaks a glass? It's amazing how important the menial mop and broom can become in the right setting.

What Is Excluded? It's just as important to find out what is NOT included in your price so you can be prepared to make other arrangements.

Combination Venues All-in-One Ceremony & Reception A combination venue allows for both ceremony and reception to take place in the same location. In some cases, that means a physical movement from one area to another: other times the same space is "changed over" for the reception. One of the biggest advantages of combining is cost. On average, a combination venue will shave 30% off the overall wedding price tag. Rental fees, decorations and even staff serve double-duty, reducing the bottom line. There are special provisions to ensure that events move seamlessly from one to the other.

Timing Be sure to include time for guests to arrive, the ceremony itself, and then mingling time before the official start of the reception. Even if the area doesn't have to be changed over, you will still need time to catch your breath and indulge the photographer for family photos. Transitioning Decor & Furniture Aisle flowers may become Head Table adornments, but there will need to be someone in charge of moving them. Similarly, the chairs may need to be moved, an archway removed, buffet tables erected, etc. VIP Re-Grouping Prepare the parents and bridal party to exit the ceremony and rejoin for pies and Grand Entrance. You don't want to hold up food waiting for someone to "get back':

-PAGE32-

Location Summary The perfect place for your ceremony and reception can be anywhere; a park, museum, church, hotel, beach or even the family backyard. Whatever isn't there naturally can be brought in, from decor to food to furniture and restrooms.

Follow the check lists and guidelines provided in the ceremony and reception sections. If you decide to combine locations, add in the combination venue guidelines.

The most imporant consideration is selecting a place that meets all the requirements for YOU, the Bride and Groom. You are the people getting married, and this is your day.

Once you've decided the where and when, you are well on your way to planning the rest of the wedding details.

Wedding Gowns Shopping Tips Take charge of the shopping experience by employing our stress-busting strategies. Start Early Finding the dress is probably one of the first things on your mental check list, but don't expect to do it in a single trip! Start shopping by browsing magazines and perusing some online sites. Consider your body type and budget during that research. Then, if the Fitting Room becomes overwhelming, stop for the day and pick it up later. Avoid Sticker Shock There's no other way to say it; wedding dresses are a big part of the budget. It's better to hit the door of the local bridal salon with a reasonable price tag in mind than be shocked and unprepared, especially in front of friends and family. Don't be afraid to research the cost of a gown that you see in a magazine by calling around first. Be Flexible Take the suggestions of salon staff and friends, at least as far as trying it on. You could be suprised by the outcome.

Limit the Shopping Party Guests It's an honor to be chosen as one of the bride's trusted advisors, but it's not for the faint of heart. It will be stressful. You will need the advice of your very best girl - the one that will tell you the absolute truth. Maybe a second trusted opinion as long as the women get along well. For those initial trips, avoid taking mom unless she really IS your trusted advisor. Avoid bringing anyone who antagonizes you, even if you really love them. And at ALL costs, avoid bringing your children. Family members can happily join you for a fitting, or when you make a final decision. Wear Sensible Undergarments Neutral colors, a convertible bra and spanks are great shopping partners. Bring Jewelry and other Must-Wear Accessories If your heart is set on wearing your Grandmother's pearls or earrings, bring them with you. If you already have something in mind for the veil or headpiece, bring it along, too. If fresh florals are to be used in your hair, bring a sample. While it's easy to change the length of a hem or a neckline, it's almost impossible to match colors that just don't go well together.

-PAGE38-

Gowns &Alterations The average wedding gown has an astounding 10 yards, that's 30 feet, of fabric. Altering the gown is much more complicated than hemming a pair of pants. The seamstress will normally take the entire gown apart at the seams for optimal results.

Bustling Tips Bustling the dress, which picks up the train so it's easier to move after the ceremony, is an art form.

A well-qualified alterations expert can see the gown's potential on your body, knowing exactly how to emphasize the good points and make the not -so-great ones almost invisible.

There are two basic ways to tie the dress; over-bustle, which creates visible layers; and under-bustle, which hides the gathered fabric underneath. Regardless of the method, since it's on the back of the dress someone else will have to do it for you.

Alterations can even be made to incorporate a personal touch to make an off-the-sale-rack gown special and unique. You can add a piece of your mother's or even grandmother's gown; put in a family heirloom, or incorporate the "somethin2: blue':

If you're having alterations done, have them check the bustle. The ties can be more stable with cording instead of thread; easier for the "hustler" with rhinestones on the ends of the ties, and printed "how to" instructions can save the day!

Gown Preservation Cleaning and preserving the gown after the wedding ensures that it stays beautiful for years, even generations, to come. Close attention must be paid to every detail to ensure that it stays as beautiful as the day it was worn.

Threads can be weakened by cleaning solvent. It's a necessary part of the process to separate threads in order to remove stains. Therefore, the beads and sequins are sewn both before and after the application of solvents.

A professional gown preservation service does not provide you with a kit. This is not a DIY process. It takes several people hours of work over several days to prepare a wedding gown for storage.

First, various cleansing agents are applied to remove any soil or stains. Several different types of spot cleaners may be used, depending on the type of soil.

Little or no water is used when professionals clean clothing, thus the term "dry cleaning': Chemical solvents are used to disolve and eliminate stains.

Next, the gown is cleaned with a gentle drycleaning solvent. Once cleaned, any sizing or water-repellant agents are re-applied.

First, the gown is examined for fabric type. color and the extent of stains and soils. This will dictate the type of cleaning agents used.

Finishers then use special pressing equipment to remove wrinkles and reshape the gown. Sequins and beads are then sewn for the second time with fresh thread to ensure stability.

At that point, wedding gowns are drastically more complicated than ordinary clothing because of both the types of fabrics used and the adornments. Special attention must be paid to properly care for different kinds of fabrics, sequins and beading, all in the same gown.

Finally, the gown is packaged in protective wrapping to eliminate potential damage from oxygen or other elements.

-PAGE41-

Tall & Muscular or 'Husky' Slimming strategies are shawl collar jackets, dark colors and proper shirt sizing at the neck. Avoid pleats and double-breasted jackets, which add bulk. Short & Broad Same as above, better with a vest than a cumberbund.

Tall & Thin or Medium Build Everything looks great - trendy, classic or contemporary - even pleats and double-breasted jackts. Short&Slim Proper fitting is a must so the tux doesn't look too big. Lower button stance will lengthen the body line, making you look taller.

- PAGE 42 -

Tuxedo Talk The most important accessory a bride can have is a well-dressed groom. Even the most beautiful dress in the world can be ordinary when paired with a terrible tuxedo. They have to be paired well in color, style and formality. Remember, you aren't just shopping for the Groom in this scenario; it's also the groomsmen and the dads. One renegade going "off the rails" with an old tuxedo that he already owns, or an online nightmare that's two inches too short, and those wedding party pictures are ruined.

The key to success is finding the right tuxedo shop. You need a local provider with professional staff experienced in taking measurements and doing fittings. Bring a swatch of the bridesmaids gowns. Come prepared to discuss the style of your wedding and the details of the bridal gown. Start shopping 2-3 months before the wedding. Be sure all the men have stopped in for a fitting check at least a week before the Big Day.

Hair &Make-Up Bridal Beauty starts from within. It's so important, especially during the stress of weddng planning, to take care of yourself. A proper diet rich in vitamins A, B, C & E, healthy fats and plenty of water give your hair and skin the basic beauty building blocks they need.

After that, it's all up to trusting a professional to ensure that you look your best on the Big Day. Treat the girls, including the moms, to hair and make-up as well: it will keep the products professional grade and ensure the looks stay consistent throughout the day.

Select a hair and make-up artist about six months before the wedding. Begin a skin and hair regimen at that time. Keep regular appointments and discuss your wedding throughout.

Schedule a trial run 2-3 weeks before the wedding. Bring along your veil or headpiece. Suggest that the women in your party schedule themselves or make it a group event so that the stylist has a preview. Then just enjoy the pampering!

Catering A common saying among chefs is "you eat with your eyes first': which means that the food has to look good before your brain will ever register the taste. Choosing the right chef is one of the key components of creating an unforgettable reception. A great chef is able to balance exquisite taste with beautiful presentation while keeping within your budget. (It is estimated that catering constitutes about 40% of the reception budget overall.) The first thing to consider is what type of food you plan on serving? Then interview caterers considering the following key points:

Experience How long has the company been in business? If they also serve through a restaurant, ask when they started catering. There are different challenges to mobile meal service than restaurants. Menu Choices & Flexibility What types of food are available? Can you design your own menu? Where is the food prepared? If the food is arriving from offsite, ask about the kitchen prep facilities to be sure they meet commercial standards. References Pictures of past set-ups and references from others in the wedding business are a must.

Catering: Types of Meal Service The way a meal is served impacts how long it takes for the meal and, of course, the price tag. Buffet Style The most common type of service, where food is set up along tables for either self service or service by wait staff. Generally, this speeds up the meal time. Control the lines by having the emcee dismiss tables. Encourage young guests to step in and serve the elderly I handicapped.

Plated Meals This requires the use of wait staff to serve each guest their prepared meal. It is more formal, but can extend the meal time as plates are handserved and cleared. Passed Appetizers Appropriate for light fare and cocktail hours. Trays of food are passed around to guests by wait staff.

Catering -PAGE 49-

Caterer Questions Plan to interview for caterers as soon as you have secured the facility. If you are using the venue to provide food, you will still need to discuss the menu options and outline the details for your contract. Key questions include: Price per Plate The price range is based on the number of guests you anticipate, and is usually lower per plate the more you serve. A price for 150 guests, in other words, would likely be less per plate than the same meal for only 50 people. Get as close to the actual number as you can, and deliver the final count 1-2 weeks before the event. If you're serving children 10 and under, ask about a "child's plate".

What does the base price include? Servingware (chafing dishes and utensils), flatware (silverware), plates, linens, champagne flutes, beverage glasses, salt, pepper and sugar for the tables. Staff Provided How many staff are provided? How are they dressed? What hours will they be scheduled? Additional Fees & Gratuity Is there an additional charge for corking the wine or champagne? Is there a cake-cutting charge? What is the expected gratuity, and when is it paid? Deposit & Payment Schedule How much down, when are the other payments due, and when is the final catering count due?

The Fun Side of Catering - Tasting Attending a Tasting is definitely one of the highlights of wedding planning.

A Tasting Party, on the other hand, still offers the chance to taste the caterer's food,

Some caterers prefer to schedule tastings one-on-one, while others have tasting parties with other couples getting married. The one-on-one approach offers significant time to spend with the chef discussing only your wedding. in the sales approach.

-PAGE 52-

Beautiful Endings The wedding reception wouldn't be complete without that delicious, show-stopping, mind-blowing creation known as The Cake. Wedding cakes have really exploded in popularity and creativity, due largely to social media like Pinterest and the ever-popular reality show 'Cake Boss: The sky is the limit on where your creativity can take you. Are you into the "earthy" look? How about a simple round buttercream dream accented with flowers and burlap, sitting atop a tree stump cake stand. More of a "Great Gatsby" girl? Imagine a towering masterpiece of multiple smooth layers, each one infused with a different decadent flavor, dripping with hand painted pearls resting on shimmering fondant icing. No tree stumps for the Gatsby Girl ... yours would be an ornate, embellished metallic stand that could easily pass for a centuries-old family heirloom. Cruise around Pinterest for some great ideas, then schedule at least three appointments with different bakeries to discuss.

Cake Talk Terms Most brides have never ordered anything more complicated than a birthday cake by the time they get married. Here are the common cake terms: Buttercream: Made from butter and shortening, this can be used as a frosting or a filling, usually between the layers of cake. Buttercreams are easily colored and flavored, but will melt in heat and must be refrigerated. Fondant: The smooth icing that covers most wedding cakes. It holds its shape in almost any climate, and is easily decorated. Ganache: A combination of dark chocolate and heavy cream. Can be used alone or infused with fruit or other flavors. Marzipan: Italian paste made of almonds, egg whites and sugar. Can be used as icing or to make decorations such as pearls, fruits or flowers. Sugar Syrup: Often painted on the outside of wedding cake to keep it tasting fresh, though it may have actually been baked for assembly several days in advance. Custurds: Pudding-like in texture, used as fillings with a multitude of flavor optiuons.

Photography Great wedding photographs happen when you find a photographer with three outstanding qualifications working in perfect harmony with one another: ( 1) Professional quality tools of the the trade: camera, lenses, etc.; (2) Technical knowledge of how to use that equipment to its fullest; and (3) The vision to see the right moments and capture them. After you find someone with all the right qualifications, you'll need to choose one that matches your personality. The photographer will be as close as any family member on your wedding day, so it's critical that you're comfortable around them, allowing for those natural moments to shine through.

Photography Styles Traditional/ Formal/ Portraiture Standard posed photographs using direction from the photographer on where and how to pose with different types of lighting and/or backgrounds. Photojournalistic I Candid Term originally coined by news photographers, capturing moments as they happen. Not posed or prepared, but candid shots. Illustative I Fine Art Combines traditional and candid shots with photographer's input to "set the stage': Photos may also be enhanced with special effects before the final product is produced. Fashion I Bold I Edgy Uses dramatic poses, angles and lighting to create that magazine look. Natural Light Unaltered photos in real sunlight.

Photographer Interview Questions When interviewing photographers, be sure to go over all the details of their presentation so that you fully understand the packages offered. Package Prices Quantify the packages by hours, people and products included. How many proofs and albums plus the number of photographers and the hours they will work. Also ask if engagement sessions are separate. Dress Code for Photographers amd Staff Their clothing needs to allow comfortable movement, but should also be non-descript and professional. Rights to Photographs In most cases, the photographer owns the rights to your photos and can use them for promotional purposes. They may or may not call to ask the client before using that photo in an album or other promotional use. Be clear on your comfort level with this policy, and be sure to get it in writing.

Previous Experience on Location Ask about their experience at your venue. If they have never shot in that location, schedule a time when they can visit the premises during the same time of day you will be married. Lighting has a lot to do with photographs. When possible, have them visit during the same season as your wedding, even if that means going out a couple of weeks before. Back-up Staff and Equipment Be sure there is a "just in case" plan in place. Deposit Amount & Payment Schedule How much is required to reserve the date? When is the balance due? Can you add and pay for additional prints later? Cancellation I Rescheduling Policy Be sure fees and policies are in the

No Phones, Please!

Just Say No! Photograph and editorial comment by GC Goforth Photography Here you come, walking down the aisle, as beautiful and radiant a bride as was ever born. All eyes are on you .... or are they?

Look at the blue circles above. Is this what you want for your wedding photos? Obstructed faces cast in bluish glows?

If you've allowed guests to bring in their phones and iPads, chances are their eyes are going to be looking down at their screens. While they might be winning the Who-Posts-It-First race, they are destroying your photos.

Politely but firmly ask that guests turn off cell phones, and Ipads, and leave the photographs to the hired professionals. You and your guests will enjoy the moment, and you'll get better photos.

Photo Booth Fun The whole "wedding thing" can be so serious; meetings, budgets, plans and check lists. Make time for a little fun and frivolity by renting a photo booth. Photo booths in no way replace a professional photographer, but they do provide fun and entertainment. While you and the rest of your wedding party are off taking professional photos, the photo booth offers guests a chance to blow off a little steam and relax. There are crazy hats, glasses, signs and other props that are sure to entertain people of all ages. Best of all, at the end of the day you and your guests get a cool little keepsake of the event.

There is a sense of spontaneity in a photo booth. No fussy poses or last-minute lip gloss touch-ups, just you and your friends acting silly. Rental fees range in price according to the number of hours and amount of service you'll need. Some come with booth operators and even onsite scrapbook assistance. Others are just dropped off and picked up later. Regardless of what package you choose, it's all about the smiles!

Creating Atmosphere Wedding Decor transitions an average space into a gorgeous setting for your wedding. There are several elements that can be combined to create the atmosphere you want for your wedding. Flowers Flowers bring the wedding stage to life with their brilliant colors and rich scents. They impart a feeling of celebration by working with two of the human senses: sight and smell. In addition to bouquets and boutonnieres, flowers can be used to complement your wedding theme as aisle decorations, centerpieces, archways and accents on cakes, catering, and gift tables. Finding the right florist to bring your vision to life is paramount. It's the starting point to figuring out what other decorations and rentals you will need. Seek a florist 6-9 months prior to the wedding. Schedule appointments to discuss how to decorate in your location at that time of year, as choosing flowers that are locally in season for your date can save a substantial amount on your decorations.

Light can also completely change the atmosphere. Different kinds of lighting can be rented to totally transform the location. Uplighting is light that is used along the edges of a building, tent or specific staging area. Mounted above or below, these types of lights are available in several different colors to match your wedding. Some facilities offer uplighting as part of their packages. Disc Jockey services also offer uplighting as part of their lighting packages so that it works in concert with their dance lighting. Or you can choose to rent uplighting through a rental service. Chandeliers Chandeliers offer gorgeous opportunities to spotlight and decorate an area. Rental companies can mount, light and drape them to create dramatic looks like the one pictured at the beginning of this section.

Rentals, Decorating, Event Planners & Coordinators Rental stores now carry everything imaginable! You could host your wedding in the middle of a dry field and have it look like the most opulant place in the world, if only for a day. Basic Rentals Tents, tables, chairs, china, linens, flatware and serving dishes are among the mainstream items.

Because your choice in rentals has such an impact on designing a space to suit your wedding needs, they cross over into the categories of Planners, Decorators, and Coordinators. Every company is different, and can interpret the scope of those jobs according to your needs.

Addressing Tips

Invitations No matter how modern and techsavvy today's brides and grooms can be, inviting guests to your wedding goes back to the traditional mailed invitation. Putting together the invitations requires the designer know what to say, how to say it, and which pieces of the ensemble are used to convey what parts of the information. If that wasn't confusing enough, the titles and spelling of local locations and even street names can be daunting.

This is definitely not a DIY task. Consult with a local wedding invitation specialist 2-3 months prior to the wedding. It may take a couple of sessions to design the invites; and about two weeks after ordering to receive them. Mail invitations 4-6 weeks before for local recipients; 6-8 weeks for USA recipients; and 8-12 weeks before if extensive travel will be required.

Music &Entertainmen Music sets the tone of any occasion, especially at a wedding. It cues people to take action, and helps to coordinate the flow of the event. At the ceremony, music is used to indirectly cue and direct the actions of the Bride, Groom, Wedding Party, and guests. The background music played as the guests arrive fills the air with a welcoming sense of family, friends and a hint of the formality of the occasion. It lets guests know to greet their fellow guests and take a seat. The silence as the groom and the officiant take their place at the altar stops the visiting and cues attention. Then the processional music is played, bringing the bridesmaids and groomsmen down to take their places as witnesses. The anticipation is palpable as the Bride's Processional music begins, and the guests rise from their seats. After the "I Do"s, the exit music, called a recessional, sends the new husband and wife, then the wedding party and finally guests out on a note of celebration. And that's just the ceremony. This isn't an iPod job, nor the typical "club DJ" or band member.

So what should you look for when choosing the wedding entertainment?

Wedding Experience Weddings are a specific skill set. Ask about how many weddings this person has completed, and in what capacity? DJ's have the most well-rounded skill set, in part because there is only one person in charge. Imagine asking the band to pick one person to sing plus know when it's time to cut the cake? Professional Equipment Ask about the sound eqmomeJnt number of speakers, mics available, etc. There should also be both dance lighting and ambience lighting uplights or a monogram as part of the package. Find out if there are any other types of equipment options for your event, like lapel mics for the ceremony, or a cloud effect for the reception. References A qualified entertainer will be able to provide professional references from facilities, coordinators, photographers, and other co-workers.

Horse-Drawn Carriages If you want to really make an entrance, consider arriving in a romantic, horse-drawn carriage. Carriages are allowed on the roads, just like regular vehicles, but not every horse is trained to take in the sights and sounds of traffic. Be sure that any carriage company you consider has hands-on experience in training their horses. There are different kinds of horses for different jobs. You can rent horses to arrive on horseback, which is a tradition among many cultures. There are also decorative harnesseses made specifically for weddings and other dressy events.

There are also different kinds of carriages. Popular choices for weddings include the classic vis-a-vis, antique 1800's vis-avis, and, of course, the romantic Cinderella Pumpkin Carriage shown below. Your carriage company should be able to advise you on what is best for your event. Be sure to ask prospective carriage companies about insurance, which is required to drive anything on the road. Find out what decorations come with the package on the carriage as well as the horse's harnesses. Quantify the number of hours, and be sure everything is spelled out in writing in the contract.

Limousines Can you imagine getting into a regular car or truck in that gown? Impossible! Worse, what happens if you get a flat tire, or the car overheats? It's not like you can just bail out on the side of the road and call a cab! These and many more drivingrelated concerns are alleviated by hiring a professional driving service to get you and your wedding party to the wedding on time .... safely. Before you start calling limousine providers, be sure you have all the pertinent information they need. (1) How many people are being transported and how will they be dressed?

A limo that holds 10 might only carry 6 for a wedding - more stuff and elaborate clothing.

(2) Your destinations and approximate route. You'll need to know where the passengers are being picked up as well as any stops that need to be made before or after the ceremony. Be sure to include your photographer in this list for any off-site photos they may want before or after. (3) Wedding Colors. Sounds strange but limo companies do their best to be in sync with your event. If you're doing purple and green, your napkins will match. Any other decorations will either be matched, or at least go well, with your wedding colors. (4) Key contact information. You'll need cell phones for all the VIP's, just in case.

Limousine Companies Hiring Do's &Don'ts Written with the contributions of Jim Luff, The Limousine Scene

DO .... Plan to book a limousine provider at least six (6) months in advance.

DO Inquire about Drivers and Chauffer's Training Programs Public transportation requires a strict adherence to screening, licensing, training and insurance requirements for their drivers.

DO Ask About TCP Numbers TCP numbers are issued by the CA

Public Utilities Commission and enable a company to operate as a transportation service. There are many different levels of TCP's. These restrict the number of people that can be carried, the distance from the company's home office, and the special requirements for those that transport children as their main business. Once issued, the TCP numbers are tracked to monitor training, drug and alcohol testing policies, and employee background checks. The CPU also monitors the company's continued compliance with license and insurance req

DO Ask how your driver wil be dressed on duty. DO Ask for a list of Professional References. DO Ask about deposit, hourly fee, overtime fees and cancellation policies. DON'T Hire a company that won't let you see their vehicles. DON'T Hire a company that demands cash only.

Beautiful Beginnnings Couples who receive Pre-Marital Counseling are 30% less likely to end in divorce. The process of moving from 'T' to "we" is a journey that begins the day a couple decides they want to be "serious" and extends for the entirety of their marriage. Of those who begin this journey to "we" about half will fail within the first six to eight years. There are three factors which appear to affect this number; how old you are, if you lived together prior to marriage, and if you engaged in premarital counseling. Those who marry young as well as those who live together first, tend to have a higher divorce rate than those who wait and maintain separate homes.

Those who seek out premarital counseling, however, reduce their chances for divorce by about thirty percent. This is because premarital counselors act as our guides to this new way of life by setting realistic expectations, giving practical skills, and opening lines of communication. A good pre-marital counselor will do more than help you learn how to set a budget or divide chores, and use "I" statements. They will help you learn how to talk about the dreams and meanings attached to those things.

A Toast to the Bride & Groom The wedding toast is a time-honored tradition. The person or people you choose to speak about you should leave guests, whether they are laughing or crying, feeling that they know the two of you a little bit better, and that you're REALLY great! Preparation is critical to ensure the toaster is prepared to wow your audience, not leave them feeling uncomfortable.
