VIBR ANT, CULTUR AL ASSET AT THE CORNER OF T WO NEIGHBORHOODS, THIRD WARD AND E AST END— SMITHER PARK is a work of art in progress providing a unique opportunity to see artists in action. The park was created for the community, by the community and serves as a venue for many special events. So far, more than 300 artists have contributed to the whimsical pieces of art in the park. Dan Phillips, known for his innovative and inspirational work worldwide, a long time friend of Stephanie Smither and her belated husband John Smither whom the park commemorates, is the artist and mastermind builder behind the unique design. The half-acre plot of land where the park is located sits adjacent to The Orange Show and features the Lindley Fish Amphitheater, the Vinson & Elkins Pavilion, Burguires, Hinton and Mathre Swings, the Marilyn Oshman Meditation Garden and a sprawling 400-foot memory wall—each adorned with mosaic artwork created out of recycled and found materials. Inspired by the Orange Show’s philosophy of promoting and sustaining self-taught art, the mosaic-covered park serves as a testimony to the vibrancy and creativity of the city of Houston. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and the admission is free. But, special events may require tickets so be sure to call ahead. —Matthew Abernathy 80
