THE ART OF CAKE We are excited for another wedding season coming up and we’ve got so many great cakes on the books
So what’s on trend for this year when it comes to cakes and goodies? 1. Taste vs Extravagant Design A lot more people are using cakes as actual dessert! They are working it into menu as part of the meal verses it just being something pretty for pictures. Many of our clients are keeping it simple but wanting their guests to enjoy the flavour. 2. Small Cakes + Dessert Tables Some people are going with smaller cakes and ordering full dessert tables. This adds variety for their guests and with many dietary restrictions they really can have something for everyone. CAKE: The Art of Cake PHOTOGRAPHER: Carissa Marie Photography
3. Buttercream vs Fondant Again, taste is “taking the cake” so to speak. You can create such beautiful finishes with buttercream! We still do a lot of fondant but we are seeing more and more buttercream. Naked is a favourite for those who like it a little less sweet! 4. “That’s so Vanilla” Believe it or not, many people are still going classic with the vanilla cake. For our clients, some do spice it up with our Vanilla with Lemon Curd and Raspberry Buttercream. Or even chocolate with vanilla buttercream. Doing a cake two tiers or more, you have the option to add additional flavours. continued on page 18

5. The Personal Touch We have many clients asking to add that personal piece to their cake. This can be obtained with a custom topper of their names, or something special to them. There are some great businesses in Edmonton that create ours like Brick Bubble, Justine Mah and Love Plus Design to name a few. 6. So Fresh People are living for the fresh florals on their cake. From simple ferns and greenery, to classic rose all the way up to birds of paradise - it’s fresh all the way. Coordinating variety and colours with your chosen local florist is a way to create a cake that ties in to your day!
7. Something Blue Classic blue is making a comeback in 2020 and not just in the decor. The flowers, the treats, many have chosen this as one of their colours! This is what we are seeing for 2020 but in the end, it’s your day! The advice we always give our couples is - make it about you! You know what you like and you should feel comfortable with your cake decorator. Ensure you ask the right questions, do your homework and we always encourage sampling.

2020 WEDDING DÉCOR TRENDS
In Full Bloom From big, beautiful blooms to luxurious velvet linens, wedding décor is truly in full bloom this year. Look to see unexpected colour palettes such as millennial pink paired with an avant-garde mustard and colorful elements such as glassware, candles and stationery. Bold colours are showing up everywhere and we aren’t mad about it! Edgy Décor This year’s wedding décor trends are all about making a statement – think Mrs. Justin Bieber’s wedding veil in all of its over-the-top beauty. Leather accents, edgy colour palettes and unconventional décor is the perfect way to make a statement on your special day. Be it winter, spring, summer or fall, edgy décor is sure to look fabulous. Sophisticated & Sustainable As interest in local, organic and sustainable options increases, so does the influence it has on wedding décor. It’s no secret that there is a huge push to ‘Go Local’ and this trend continues through into décor as couples prioritize sustainability. Floral arrangements are including locally sourced vegetables such as kale and organic fruit such as pomegranates, which offer the perfect pop of colour. Pssst, did you know renting is green?
‘This year’s wedding décor trends are all about making a statement’ Let It Be Lit A new decade means all the more reason to celebrate. Look to see dramatic, out-of-the box lighting options such as industrial chandeliers, customized neon signs and more. No matter what venue you select whether it be a warehouse, restaurant or even a tent, light the place up! Outside In Bringing the outdoors in continues to be popular but in 2020 look to see more unusual foliage options with leafy greens and larger than life floral arrangements. Visually enticing floral prints also add a botanical element to an event space making any environment feel both natural and lush. All In The Details Details truly make the design! Today’s couples are choosing to personalize more and more throughout the wedding planning process. Every detail is carefully thought out and purposeful, whether that’s selecting industrial inspired flatware or incorporating sentimental dinnerware, wedding décor should be perfectly reflective of each couple’s unique story.

Become Your Own Sommelier Choosing the food for your big day can be one thing, and choosing the wine can be another. Should you splurge on fancy labels or wine glass charms for your friends and family? Chances are, your guests will be less interested in the visual aspects of your choice if you have chosen a wine that suits the food you will be serving. First off, you should always match the colours of the wine and meat to be served - and not for aesthetic reasons. White wine has a lighter flavour that goes well with light-coloured foods, like chicken, rice, and pasta. A red wine, no matter how pricey, will be overwhelming with these kinds of foods. If you will be having steak or dark vegetables, a red will likely be a better choice. Chardonnay is currently the world's favorite white wine, and will likely be a crowd pleaser. Another safe choice for white wines is Riesling, especially if you are serving food that will be spicy or bold. As for red wines, red wine blends are consistently growing in popularity. These are light, delicious, and taste more like juice than wine. If you prefer a wine with more of a punch, Cabernet Sauvignon is usually a crowd pleaser. Another option to consider is serving a rose wine. These go well with a variety of foods and flavours, and are light and romantic - perfect for a wedding. However, if you prefer pink, do your research! Many of your guests may not care for a simple White Zinfandel, and you will want to show them that you have put thought and consideration into your choice. When choosing a wedding wine, the safe choice is often the right choice. You will want to please as many of your guests as possible, and choosing your favorite, harshest red wine may not be the way to do so. Spend some time deciding, and maybe recruit your bridesmaids for the tasting process!

FLOWER FLAIR Today’s trends are easy to adapt and make your own - whether you’re a boldly bohemian bride or you’re tying the knot with a chic traditional ceremony, your posies will look perfect!
When you’re choosing your florist, it’s a good idea to meet with approximately three florists to compare their pricing, style, and if they’re a good personality fit. Ask your wedding and reception venue if they have anyone they would recommend and take referrals from family and friends, especially if you liked the flowers at their recent nuptials! Focus on learning about your florist’s services and approach be sure to ask for their wedding portfolio. Once you’ve settled on “the one”, make the most of your appointments! Make sure to bring fabric swatches of the bridal party’s dresses, pictures of your dress and the venue, and some ideas that you love. Come with an open mind; like all wedding vendors, these specialists understand how to create the showstopping look you want while staying within your budget. They’ll also have great suggestions for flower pairings, be able to recommend blooms that are in season (or look so fabulous you won’t care that they’re out of season), and present a few amazing design ideas perfect for you! continued on page 32

Wondering what trends we’re saving in our inspiration file? Here are our favourites: • LOOSE AND UNRULY. Both bouquets and arrangements are saying goodbye to tight, traditional shapes in favour of organic shapes bursting with beautiful blooms! Greenery, branches and ferns add interesting texture and volume that complements this perfectly imperfect vibe. • FRESHLY PICKED. Consider featuring local, in season flowers for an English-garden inspired look that is both beautiful and environmentally friendly. • TRADITIONAL FAVOURITES. Flowers like carnations and chrysanthemums have often been eschewed as overused but they’ve made a comeback thanks to the beautiful heirloom varietals cultivated by independent flower farms.
• VASES WITH PERSONALITY. Gather your flowers and greenery in unique containers! Add a bit of glimmer with mercury glass and antique cut glass vases or embrace the shine with metal containers in rose gold, copper, silver, or gold. Embrace interesting shapes too: geometric pots, unexpected containers, and mismatched vases are a great way to spice up your arrangements without distracting from your florals. • CREATIVE CENTREPIECES. Think beyond single arrangements on round tables; get creative with the opportunities offered by long King’s tables or add variety with multiple arrangements in different complementary styles. Consider one large centrepiece paired with smaller complementary arrangements on large tables or a family of smaller arrangements.
• SWEET SUCCULENTS. Succulents are a lovely option for adding a soft greenery to your table; plus if they’re potted individually, they make thoughtful wedding favours. • BEAUTIFUL BACKDROPS. Create a eye-catching backdrop for your ceremony with a flower wall or garland-covered gazebo. While luxurious Pinterest-worthy flower walls can be expensive, you can get a similar look by incorporating vines and greenery with the blossoms. • GO GREEN! Looking for a unique alternative for your florals? Ditch the flowers! Consider embracing trees, succulents, ferns, and other greenery for decor that is full of texture and personality.

2020 FLORAL TRENDS After you say I do, your walking down the aisle blissfully into the next chapter of your life, in one hand is your loving partner and in the other is the bouquet of your dreams. This bouquet is going to be in majority of your wedding photos, put some thought into this process. The florals chosen will show the guests another piece of the couple’s personality, something that is created just for them that hasn’t been seen before. Whether playful or classic, flowers are a highlight of many weddings. The 2020 Bride can look forward to a wide variety of colors, texture and informal unique designs. A fun trend observed is the comeback of the Cascade! But this is not your mothers tear drop by any means, the modern cascade is a naturally gathered, wildly organic and fun bouquet full of textures and artful touches. This bouquet photographs beautifully with satin or raw silk tails trailing at various lengths. Couples should no longer be afraid to go bold and big. Whichever style bouquet you choose, P osy, Bohemian, Garden Gathered or Asymmetrical, mix it up and make things fun, experiment using layers of foliage and texture with undertones of
unique color. Add meaning to the bouquet with something sentimental such as wrapping the stems with a piece of your mothers wedding dress, adding Grandmothers broach or simply a photo of the family pet. Embrace the opportunity to play with flowers. Multi-use arrangements is a trend we are seeing more of as this keeps budget in mind, for the bride that wants to be able to repurpose her florals. Make the most of what you paid for! A statement piece such as a swag on an arch at the ceremony can easily double at the reception on a fireplace mantel or a centerpiece for the head table. Swap out a lavish garland for organically laid greenery on guest tables. Rich tropical botanicals can really add a modern pop to an industrial venue and be super cost effective. I am so lucky to work with such a creative team of nationally and internationally acclaimed designers at Incredible Florist. We have the opportunity to really learn from each other and stay on top of the latest trends. Our cooler is stocked with a worldwide variety of florals to see, touch and smell during a one on one consultation, this really helps to bring the floral vision to life for any wedding! We are so looking forward to the 2020 Wedding season and can’t wait to design each bouquet with a touch of the couple’s personality.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I START PLANNING MY WEDDING SKIN CARE REGIMEN?
WHAT PRODUCTS WILL HELP MY WEDDING MAKEUP STAY ALL DAY?
I would start a year before; this will allow your skin to be at it’s healthiest before your big day! But don’t worry, better late than never so start as soon as you can!
A good primer is key to a flawless make up application. We have two to choose from: for a glowy finish, use Skin Perfect Primer; if you prefer something slightly more matte, our Hydrablur primer will give you the perfect canvas. Using our Antioxidant Hydramist as a setting spray will flash firm and maintain your make up look.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BOOK A TREATMENT WITH MY SKIN THERAPIST?
Every 4-6 weeks is recommended.
ASK THE EXPERT
How to Prepare a Beauty routine for your big day
WHAT ARE SOME TREATMENTS THAT I CAN BOOK 1 YEAR, 6 MONTHS, 3 MONTHS, AND A FEW WEEKS BEFORE MY WEDDING? 1 YEAR BEFORE: Treatments focused on deep peeling,
microneedling and brightening are recommended to help plump and firm the skin.
WHAT PRODUCTS WILL ASSIST WITH ISSUES LIKE BREAKOUTS OR FINE LINES?
AGE Bright Clearing serum can be used morning and night will help treat breakouts or keep them at bay. AGE Bright Spot Fade; is a spot treatment for active breakouts as well as the darker marks left behind after the breakout.
6 MONTHS: Treatments focusing on exfoliation
will polish and smooth the skin and allow any concentrated treatments like masques to be better absorbed which will increase skins luminousity and help your specific skin concerns.
Biolumin C will help brighten and firm the skin to treat fine lines. Phtyo-Nature Firming Serum will offer flash firming as well as firm the skin over time.
3 MONTHS: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate with a
hyaluronic acid rich serum and masque. A FEW WEEKS: I’d suggest a deep exfoliation to
smooth any texture on the skin (this will allow for a flawless make-up application), follow that with our Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque and you’ll already have a bridal glow! WHAT TREATMENTS SHOULD I AVOID IN THE WEEKS UP TO MY WEDDING?
Any deep skin peels, microneedling or IPL as these require downtime for skin healing.
HOW QUICKLY WILL RESCUE PRODUCTS WORK?
If you’re talking breakouts, skin aging, or sensitivity, give products a good month to see changes. However, if you are looking for a rescue of hydration and glow, 1-2 days. WHAT FOODS AND BEVERAGES SHOULD I AVOID TO MAINTAIN MY COMPLEXION?
Any food or drinks containing any excessive amounts of sugar should be avoided, as they can lead to skin rosiness. Spicy food can also increase flushing in the skin and dairy can increase puffiness. Increase water intake for added hydration!
WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I BE USING WEEKLY?
Direshni Vining- Educator Charismatic educator, passionate about skincare and education within the industry.
An exfoliant that will help buff off any dead skin cells and smooth the texture of the skin showcasing a radiant and luminous skin canvas! A nourishing, vitamin enriched masque will quench thirsty skin and provide an extra boost of nourishment.
WHAT BODY PRODUCTS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO PAIR WITH MY DREAM WEDDING DRESS?
WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I BE USING DAILY?
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE SAFE TO USE ON MY LASH EXTENSIONS?
A good cleanser is vital to healthy skin, at Dermalogica we believe in a double cleanse which will effectively remove any pollutants and make up from your skin. A hydrating/brightening serum to help replenish any lost moisture and increase luminosity and a skin specific moisturizer and an spf for the daytime.
Start with a full body exfoliation using our Thermafoliant Body Scrub. You can do this twice a week, follow up with Phyto Replenish Body Oil to soften and nourish the skin.
Any products that aren’t oily will be safe for use on your lash extensions.

BEAUTY GIFTS FOR THE BRIDE B 44
Giving an experience for a wedding, engagement or a bachelorette party is something you can do to keep your gift giving unique. Perhaps you’re looking for a gift to pamper the bride, something to give your bridal party, or maybe you’re even looking to pamper your mom or grandma. Here are some unique beauty gift ideas to consider when gifting for your loved ones.
Makeup Workshop A makeup workshop is an event where you can get together with a group of your friends to learn a few makeup techniques. Workshops can be personalized in so many ways: Were you looking to purchase a gift for the entire bridal party where everyone can get glammed up before a night out or for the bachelorette party? Were you looking to gift an intimate experience for just the mother and daughter to spend some quality time together? Are the people participating in the event looking for more of a day time, glam or bridal look? Perhaps they want to learn to take their daytime makeup to a night time look without starting over. Whatever sort of workshop you may be looking for, you can personalize the experience to your needs. Just consult with the company you’re booking with to see what types of workshop they can provide.
Lash Lift and Tint If the bride does not have lash extensions for her wedding, a lash lift and tint is always a nice treat that requires zero maintenance and is at a lower price point - bonus! Lash lift and tints will last about 4-6 weeks, which is the perfect service to have done a week before their wedding. This gift will last throughout their honeymoon, making it the best gift for a new bride.
DIY Spa Day at Home Sometimes an experience isn’t always about leaving your home. An engagement gift that is always a hit for the bride is a DIY Spa Day. All you need is a bathtub caddy, face masks, bath salts, a candle, a bridal magazine and maybe even a bottle of wine! This gives the bride a nice spa experience in the comfort of their own home to relax and start their wedding planning!
Luxurious Spa Day Services like a massage, facial, manicure, or pedicure are all perfect ways to gift an experience. Give your bride a spa day at their Bridal Shower to help them prepare for their wedding day, or wait for their wedding day to help them wind down after all their planning has finished. You could even gift a couple’s massage so that the new bride and groom can relax post nuptials. Wedding planning can be both stressful and expensive so gifting something to help them prepare or relax from the big day will certainly not go unnoticed!
Spray Tan Who doesn’t love a good bronzed glow on their wedding day? If you’re going to gift a spray tan to the bride, I would recommend purchasing two sessions. One for a trial to make sure the color is just right and one for them to use a couple days prior to the wedding day. If you’re wanting to gift your bridal party with a spray tan for the wedding day, you can book all your girls at a spray tan studio, or you can book a mobile business to come to your home. Spray tans are a great, non-permanent way to get a beautiful glow without any damage or risk to your skin. Sometimes gifting an experience outside of the bride’s registry is something that they didn’t know they needed. It helps create lasting memories with those who are the most important to them and helps them really take their time and enjoy the wedding planning process.

The French Romance Collection SAREH NOURI NEW YORK FALL 2020
Oh, the spell the French Arts cast over us. We are perpetually lured and entranced by the expressive design of artists such as Monet, Matisse and Seurat. Our Fall 2020 collection is influenced by the unique and strategic design of Andre Le Notre’s Gardens of Versailles. This dynamic showcase of magnificent geometric design is balanced by a serene visual harmony as evidenced in each piece of this collection. Every line having a distinct purpose, every fabric selected with careful precision. The ultimate goal – impression on a grand scale while maintaining a classic formality of glamorous charm. This collection is its own love story; fabric meeting the designer’s hand, spun into a bold and beautiful creation that leaves the onlooker both mesmerized and captivated by the power and beauty before them. Fabrics of three-dimensional qualities were selected. A silk palm-leaf jacquard mimicking the soft brush stroke of an artist’s hand as well as a hand painted floral sash representing true, one of a kind art. A delicate pique creating an ever subtle illusion of depth and movement. A laser cut crinolina lace that offers a beautiful visual harmony in the fusion of fabrications. Each gown cut in strong silhouettes with modern lines and significant parallel seaming to create impressive images of great finesse. Every detail with purpose. Every line perfectly planned. This is French Romance. This is our Fall 2020 Collection.

Choosing a style for your hair on your wedding day can be a daunting task. You don’t want to choose the wrong style and regret it every time you look through your photos, right? Here are some tips for you to consider when deciding on your wedding hair that may help you through the process.
seeing a lot of large headbands, anywhere from satin with pearls to a full rhinestone tiara style. Take a step back and look at the overall theme of your wedding. Is it more trendy or classic? This will help you choose whether to do something more fashion forward or stick with a more classic look for your wedding hair.
Tip #1: Don’t let your hair compete with your dress.
Tip #4: Don’t ask for too many opinions.
You more than likely spent a large amount of money on your dress. You want to make sure that your hairstyle complements it rather than taking attention away from it. If you have a more simple dress, add in that extra large hair piece that you wanted or do something more extravagant for your updo. If you have a very detailed dress, you may want to think about doing something more simple for your hair, like a loose wave or a low chignon with a smaller hair piece or even no hair piece at all.
This is your wedding and your style. This day is all about you and your soon-to-be partner. Make sure that you choose what you want and don’t let other people’s opinions confuse you or sway you in a different direction. If you really need assistance, ask your stylist or your wedding planner. These experts will look at the overall picture more objectively and listen to your vision.
Tip #2: Think about what you do with your hair on a regular basis.
This could apply to anything involved in a wedding, really. As soon as you set an expectation that is unrealistic, you’re going to stress yourself out over something that cannot be controlled. When it comes to hair, find multiple images of a style rather than just finding one that you have your mind set on. Take the time to look at what you like or don’t like about each image and be sure to communicate this to your stylist. They may be able to work with the features that you like from that updo and let you know how it will differ from the image. If your stylist tells you that the look may not be able to be achieved, trust them. You may have very different hair than the person in the photos which means that there will be variations between the final look.
Do you normally wear your hair up in a messy bun for work? Do you often style it with loose waves? Sometimes not going too far from what you usually do is the best option. I’m certainly not saying that you should throw it up into a messy bun and call it a day, but you will feel more like yourself on your wedding day if you do something that you’re comfortable with. Consult with your stylist to see whether you want to have something similar to your regular style, but spruced up a notch or if you want to step outside the box and surprise your soon-to-be partner with a totally different look.
Tip #3: Look at what is trending. Current trends are easy to find with so many social media platforms. For the 2020 wedding season, straight hair and middle parts are making a comeback. Don’t worry, if you’re into loose waves or curls you’re still in luck since these will always be a popular bridal hairstyle. You’re also going to be
Tip #5: Don’t set unrealistic expectations.
We all know how important it is to have a vision for your wedding from start to finish. Being open to suggestions from the professionals that you have booked may be the best way to have your vision come to life and who knows, it may end up being even better than you planned!

HAIR AFFAIR Retro waves, jewel studded clips, trendy barrettes, pearl bands, wild curls, and sophisticated undo’s. The sheer amount of options you have when considering your wedding hair is staggering. Whether you want to make a statement, or stick to cool and classic, don’t be afraid to experiment. Seek out some expert advice from your stylist, and most importantly stay true to your personal style.

Lashes that say "I Do" If you’re planning the type of lashes you want to have on your wedding day, it can be a little daunting. But with the right information and research, they can be the perfect addition to any wedding look!
Here are a few things to know: 1. Choose a reputable artist! Most people aren’t aware, but Canada does not require you to be certified to start doing lashes. So first step is to ensure your lash artist is certified, has plenty of experience, great reviews and photos. Your wedding is not the time or place to be budget hunting for a lash artist! 2. Try Volume lashes! This means you’ll have more volume and depth to your lashes than you will naturally be able to achieve on your own. Remember: Flash Photography causes your makeup and your lashes to appear on average 30% lighter in photos! So your lash extensions will need to be fuller than you’re probably used to, in order to achieve that look.
3. Lash Extensions mean NO RUNNING MASCARA on the big day! The last thing you want to worry about when the emotions are flowing on your wedding day is a strip lash popping off, or mascara running. Lash extensions will completely solve this problem! 4. Get a full set 2-3 weeks prior to your wedding. This will ensure that you are not al-lergic or sensitive to the adhesives used during the application process. It also allows you to wear the style for a few weeks to ensure you LOVE them before committing to having them for the wedding. Then book your lash fill about 2 days prior to the wed-ding to ensure they are as full, fluffy and flawless as possible! Lash Common will offer 20% OFF to any brides for a full set of lashes.

It boasts stunning views of Paris and a focus on bespoke services, gastronomy, and the French style of joie de vivre. WEATHERPROOF YOUR WEDDING Superstitions might say that rain on your wedding day means good luck but that isn’t always comforting when you look out the window and see clouds on your big day! The best way to beat wedding day weather woes? Create contingency plans. The most important thing you can do to ensure you’re weather-ready on your big day is to discuss your options when you’re booking your venue. If you’re planning to hold your wedding at an outdoor venue, find out what options they have if weather gets in your way. Do they have an indoor space you can move into? Do they have sufficient tenting if the weather is passable? Having a clear plan with your venue means it will be easy for your other vendors to adjust accordingly so your day can still run smoothly. Learn who will be responsible at the venue for keeping an eye on weather and last-minute changes; ensure that you feel confident that they understand what you’d like done and will adjust plans accordingly. Ensure that either your wedding planner, day-of coordinator, or someone you trust that can liaise with the venue and your other vendors to ensure things go smoothly and you’re not worrying about things like last minute details on your big day. Planning a summer wedding outdoors? Tents offer a lot of flexibility for most weather situations. Perfect for creating shade on sunny
days, event tenting’s vaulted ceilings and arches can be left open to let the sun and breeze in on beautiful days but solid walls can be substituted if the weather requires. If you are hosting your wedding in a tent on a rainy day, do keep in mind that you are still outside! Allow sufficient space between the wall and anything you have set up - some rain can still leak in and the ground near the edges can get a bit soggy. An added nice touch would be gathering a collection of blankets and shawls for your guests to borrow if it starts to become a bit chilly. Think ahead and keep your guests comfortable and cared for with small touches like ensuring dress code and venue information is provided so they can dress appropriately. Your guests will appreciate the little detail after all, who likes navigating a grassy lawn wedding in heels? If it will be a bit cooler out, consider adding a warm drink or two to the menu. Something comforting, even classic hot chocolate, can be a nice warming touch when the weather gets a bit chillier. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you’re having a summer wedding, consider adding a little selection of toiletries like cans of spray deodorant and sunscreen in the washroom.
Stash a stylish umbrella in your limo or vehicle on the way to the ceremony and venue; if you plan ahead, you can find some chic options that will ensure you can make the dash from vehicle to door without getting damp! If you’re keen on extra preparedness, online shops even offer bridal rain boots and special elasticized rain capes that will hold up the hem of your dress, keeping you and your gown clean and dry. Finally, you can consider a wedding insurance policy. These cover a wide range of situations, including if you’re forced to cancel or rearrange your wedding celebrations due to adverse weather conditions. This would only cover situations where weather conditions were bad enough to cause major disruptions to travel, preventing the wedding party and guests from attending. Not a perfect solution but definitely smart to consider, especially if you’re planning a winter wedding. Regardless of what side you fall on the wedding day rain superstition debate, the weather is something you can’t plan for your wedding. However, by ensuring you’ve planned for both perfect weather or stormy skies, you’ll be able to get hitched without a hitch!

BRIDAL MAKE-UP Let’s talk about makeup techniques versus makeup trends. Understanding the difference can save you from mistaking an influencer for a professional artist.
For those of us who aren’t from the millennial generation, you may recall a time when makeup trends were created by senior makeup artists backstage at fashion shows. Then they were mimicked by celebrities on the red carpet before they trickled onto local makeup counters as a new or limited edition launch for the public. Times are changing and so are makeup trends – but more specifically, who is setting them. In today’s beauty industry, on platforms such as YouTube or Instagram, trends are starting with a new driving force. Influencers, vloggers, and beauty gurus alike are flocking to YouTube and In-stagram to create their channel or page with the hope that with enough
followers, they will develop their own brand. Beauty companies are taking note of the millions of people following beauty influencers and are realizing that these social media content creators are amassing a huge market following. If they can tap into that following, it could result in mass sales. Today, makeup trends are driven completely by sales, rather than by trained and certified makeup artists. The trouble is that most of these trends aren’t created for the everyday person. Certified makeup artists know how to highlight their client’s features and help each person look like the best version of themselves. Here are some tips to booking a Professional Makeup Art-ist:
#1. They have a portfolio specifically of makeup looks they have done on others. An experienced makeup artist will be able to share examples of their work on other people. If you’re researching someone and most of their work is only on themselves, it’s likely they are an influencer or have not established themselves professionally. #2. They have strong interpersonal skills, meaning they will listen to your wants and opinions. Makeup artistry is a service, specifically it is customer service. The artist will work with you to create a customized look, rather than just recreating your inspiration image. They will also have a strong knowledge of hygiene, health, and safety practices due to their education and experience. #3. They have an unbiased opinion on the product they are using. A Makeup Artist isn’t getting paid to use or say they like something. Most often, they’ve bought the product with their own money and use it because it actually works. A professional makeup artist will have extensive experience with skin care, different skin types, textures, tones, eye shapes and personality types. There is room in the beauty industry for both makeup artists and influencers. However when you are researching artists, be thoughtful of who you are choosing for your big day!

GROOM'S ATTIRE: TUXEDO VS. SUIT? Renting or Buying? Once you’ve decided on your wedding style and what you want to wear on your wedding day, the next big question is choosing whether to rent or buy. Both options have their benefits and should be considered; the biggest factors to think about are how much you (and your groomsmen) are willing to invest on attire and if you’re looking for a less traditional option.
GROOM'S ATTIRE: TUXEDO VS. SUIT? continued from page 109
B 110
Renting is a popular choice for weddings and with good reason! Renting is budget-friendly plus it’s preferable for groomsmen who already own several suits and don’t want to add another one to their wardrobe. Rentals ensure it’s easy to find a great option that flatters the whole wedding party; thanks to the wide range of sizes available, it’s simple to find a great fit for everyone. They also tend to emphasize styles that are timeless and look best on a wide range of clientele. The biggest advantage of rentals? It’s a package! Rentals include everything you need for your look, including your suit/tuxedo, shirt, vest, shoes, tie, and all of the finishing touches. Unlike assembling your own outfit, you won’t have to worry about finding cufflinks and pocket squares (unless you want to add your own), it’s all there. Larger rental companies typically offer their vests, cummerbunds and ties in dozens of colours so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect colour to compliment your colour palette and the bridesmaid dresses! With an easy pickup and drop off process, it’s always convenient and easy. Looking forward to wearing that special suit again in the future? Buying your wedding attire is a smart idea if you like the option of wearing the suit again or if you’d welcome a reason to add a new suit to your closet. If you have a unique look in mind, retail offers a wider selection of styles, including trendier options and colours, slimmer cuts, and the ability to get more tailoring done to get a flawless fit. While this can be a larger financial investment, don’t rule it out even if you’re on a tighter budget - there are fantastic options available at every price point. You’d be surprised by some of the great options available at entry-level prices! If you are going the purchase route, look at a few options for bespoke suiting as well; it’s your big day, consider investing in something made just for you. Don’t forget that as the groom, you can select something different from the groomsmen! If they would strongly prefer to rent but you want to purchase your suit, that’s okay. As long as the styles are complementary, the wedding party will still look cohesive and stylish.

Remember to start thinking about the men’s attire several months before the wedding day so your options aren’t limited. While it’s possible to do a last-minute rental, you’ll be at the mercy of availability, especially during the summer and early autumn wedding season. Plan to do at least a couple of trips. Once just as a couple to narrow down the options you like (it’s easier without commentary from the peanut gallery) and again with the wedding party to try them on.

Gifts to Show Your Gratitude At a loss for cool new ideas? We’ve got you covered.
You’ve read articles on writing your speech, set yourself an essential reminder to pack the rings, and you’re ready to say “I do.” But have you thought about your groomsmen’s gifts?
Like the gifts the bride gives her attendants, the groomsmen’s gifts are a token of gratitude for all of the help and support that they’ve given you through the wedding process. Typically, gifts are given to the members of the wedding party, the best man, all groomsmen, the ring bearer, the father of the bride and your father as well. Not sure how grand the gesture should be? A common range is between $75-150; take into consideration how much they had to spend on hotels, wardrobes and associated celebrations. Your gift should reflect the time, money and thought that everyone put into helping make your day amazing. Also, compare with your bride and her plans for bridesmaids’ gifts - they should be comparable to the groomsmen’s gifts. It’s common to get matching or similar gifts for all the guys, but you certainly don’t need to. Personalizing each gift and finding things they ’ll love is a thoughtful gesture that will ensure your thank-you won’t be forgotten in a drawer. If you’re not the first gent in your social circle to tie the knot, most guys probably already have a flask or two gathering dust - just to use one example. Typically, the best man, fathers of the bride and groom, and the ringbearer will receive personalized gifts, even if you opt for otherwise matching gifts.
• You can never go wrong with a nice addition for their liquor cabinet. Think beyond expected classics and find something special like a local craft brew or wine from the venue if you’re getting married at a vineyard. • Spring wedding or rainy location? Keep the rain at bay with a slick umbrella. Famously fashionable, American president John F. Kennedy gifted each of his groomsmen engraved umbrellas at his wedding and his style was always impeccable. • A sharp, well-made weekend bag. While they likely have casual duffels and reliable suitcases, they probably don’t have a serviceable but sharp weekender. Help them arrive in style with a nicely constructed bag for those weekend getaways. • A metal money clip is an under-appreciated accessory, especially for those days (like your wedding) when tucking a full wallet in your pocket isn’t ideal. Clips are a great way to wrangle together just the essentials, like cash and a card or two. Gifts wrapped and ready? The best time to give them out is at the rehearsal dinner while the bride is giving her gifts to her bridal party. The rehearsal dinner is an intimate celebration and opportunity for your entire wedding party to gather together, making it the perfect time to thank everyone for their role in your big day. The ideal way to present your gifts is individually so you can take the time to express your gratitude in each person’s role. If you do choose to give the gifts at the rehearsal dinner and are having formal seating, you and your bride may also opt to beautifully wrap and set the gifts at each person’s seat. Whether you choose to put the gifts at their place setting or to give the gifts by hand, ensure you include a thoughtful note! If you’ve opted for alcohol or a similar gift, you may want to give your gift at a different time (like the bachelor party).

Everyone might be buzzing about the bride’s dress, but that doesn’t mean you should pass on your chance to shine! After all, it’s your day too. Unless you and your bride are opting for an unconventional wedding, the best way to elevate your style is paying extra attention to the little details. Even if your bride’s dress will be a surprise, make sure you have a good idea of its style, and keep your wedding theme and venue in mind when you’re picking your suit and ensemble. Remember, it’s not just a perfect fit you’re looking for - you’ll want to make sure your outfit is appropriate for what you’re planning. Matching suits for the wedding party can be a great way to achieve a chic, cohesive look that looks amazing in photos - but make sure to add something special to your look. You don’t want to blend in with the groomsmen! Don’t rule out wearing a completely different suit, but if you like the idea of matching, switch a few things up. Use a different accent colour for your accessories or design a unique boutonniere. If you’re keen on making a sartorial statement, don’t shy away from patterns. While your wedding might not be the best time for wild experimentation, you can always try a light pinstripe, windowpane, or check pattern. A subtle, classic pattern is a great way to add interest to your suit. If patterns aren’t your thing, consider a different colour: blue, black and grey are reliable, but colours like burgundy, dark forest green, or eggplant are a great way to add something special to an otherwise classic look.
Once you’ve got your clothing all ready to go, be sure to get groomed. If you don’t regularly, this is a great time to spend a bit of extra time on your overall look. Plan to get your hair cut about a week before the wedding day, even if it’s just a trim or shape so you will look your best. Schedule a shave too - take advantage of a local high-end barber and indulge in the works. The hot towels and full treatments help get a supersmooth, longer lasting shave. You may also want to consider a buff manicure; completely no-frills, it skips nail polish and simply consists of some basic shaping so your hands are smooth and photo ready. It might feel indulgent, but taking these few extra steps will ensure you look and feel confident and camera-ready. You’re ready, your suit’s ready and it’s almost the big day. Before you go to bed the night before, unpack your suit and dress shirts and hang them up. Remove any creases and let it air out. This will ensure you’re not looking at a suit full of wrinkles when you get dressed on the morning of your wedding day. Finally, take your time getting ready on your wedding day. Take a few extra minutes, fidget and perfect your tie before you leave, and only slip the essentials into your pockets. Refrain from weighing down your pockets with keys, wallets and devices, which will cause lumps and disturb the clean lines of your suit. Remember, the key to putting together your best wedding day look is paying attention to the little details from head to toe. Whether you’re going for a classic look or a trendier approach, attention to detail will ensure you and your partner will be starting married life in style.

TRENDS HEADING INTO
2020 Leah Da Gloria
Every bride secretly or not so secretly wants to be princess on their wedding day. The overload of bridal inspiration on social media has changed the way brides shop and has made choosing a wedding gown harder than ever before. Every bride now has the ability to be a celebrity on their day with the potential of ‘going viral’ so the pressure is on. Adding to this pressure is the bombardment of a million different options trickling across feeds daily. Current bridal trends are reflective of this overload. Ultimately, everything is in fashion, depending on the bride. Sexy and sheer with strategically placed appliqué show no signs of slowing down. We have seen several seasons of gowns intricately embroidered with 3D florals, organic vines, linear elements, sparkles, glitter underlays and dainty details. Necklines are plunging and linings are barely there. The ‘sexy bride’ is a look that is only getting stronger into 2020. The use of multiple textures layered together to create new fabrics is very strong. Drama is in, with detachable over skirts trending well into next year. Brides are embrac-ing the idea of two looks and two moments to have a grand entry or big reveal. Again sheer light fabrics with multiple layers to create volume will be popular. A move back to plain is definitely a strong look coming into 2020, with brides looking for a modern interpretation of the classic clean gown. A sharp new cut and a grand train, a level of drama is still essential. A reworking in some way to a classic cut. Brides are realizing they can still have an impactful look without lace or beads. Crisp white and ivory feel new again and a welcome relief for brides who don’t like the look of lace or beading. Both mermaid styles and ball gowns will keep trending into 2020, in both their plain and intricate iterations respectively. Grand ball gowns with lots of sparkle, long trains, dramatic veils, a true princess look will stay strong into next year. Brides are more informed than ever before and are often looking for something a little different. Voluminous and billowy or sleek and tight, sleeves will keep popping up as a strong bridal trend in 2020, especially with many brides choosing to have winter weddings. 2020 will see the trend of wide scoop and squared necklines, always flattering to the décolletage it brings a point of difference to the dominance that the plunging V neckline has brought for the past few seasons, especially for brides wanting to err on the conservative side. A scoop neck and a dainty low back will definitely be seen on brides in 2020. A return to French lace is also due, having taken a back seat to more modern embroideries in recent years. French lace feels new again, like when you pull out a once loved item of clothing from the cupboard and fall in love with it all over again. Traditional lace will have a moment in 2020. Baroque style embroidery patterns have dominated the psyche of brides in recent times. The repetitive heavy swirls are ready to be packed away, in their place we will see refined, delicate florals and a move back to fine beading and pearls. With so many trends happening simultaneously it’s both an exciting and overwhelming experience to be a bride. The only trend I subscribe to is ensuring brides choose a style that suits them and the style of the wedding, regardless of the category it falls into. The Leah Da Gloria Couture and BOHÉME by Leah Da Gloria collections encapsulate a wide variety of styles that speak to the modern bride, Select pieces are available at Powder Bride Toronto and Calgary.

MAKING A HOUSE A HOME Written by: Stephanie Martin, BAID Photos by: Michelle Johnson of MJ Photography
In today’s world of ever evolving technology, seasonally emerging fashion trends, weekly diet fads, and the latest and greatest of every product streaming to us daily; it can feel like very few things in our lives are truly lasting. Our homes however are the one exception, and unlike our iPhones, we don’t want a yearly upgrade. Our home can act as a true respite from what can feel like a disposable culture. At home, we surround ourselves with items of comfort, sentiment, memory and joy. So when selecting a home to purchase, do you find yourself seeking out the shiny, new cookie cutter home, or do you search for something more unique that you can transform into your own? While an older home may not offer the luxury of brand new appliances or perfectly placed pot lights; the unique architectural elements and charming character that these homes often feature can be much harder to infuse into a new space. Elements such as moldings, interesting ceiling details, curved staircases and built in millwork are all examples of
features often found in older homes that are major upgrades in new builds. At first sight these character pieces may feel old or dingy, but a fresh coat of paint or new hardware can inexpensively transform these items into the key features of your home. The key to renovating an older home is to let the character shine through while adding the modern conveniences that you need. We often advise clients to first live in their older home, to get to know the home itself, and to dissect their habits, needs and desires for the refreshed space. Renovating provides an opportunity to not only create a home that reflects your personal aesthetic but also a home that functions to suit your unique lifestyle. Essentially, you can enjoy the luxury of building a custom dream home with the flexibility to build it over time and as your budget allows. Your design choices can evolve through the renovation process and in the end, you will be left with a truly personal home that reflects your own personality and life story.
B 139
As we enter the New Year we are really starting to see interiors move away from clearly defined style trends (think “modern farmhouse” or “mid century modern”) and evolve into more eclectic and personal spaces. The architectural character we celebrate in renovations translates directly to the furniture and décor items we choose as well. Mixing styles, eras and cultural influences into your home is what will create a timeless and personal feel. We are also seeing a lot more warmth in our neutral tones with textures and natural elements creating a base palette to layer upon. Lighter woods, mixed metals, soft whites and touches of black create a space that you can add anything into, including that antique heirloom you just can’t part with. Overall there is just something so rewarding about breathing new life into an older space. Renovating allows you to take a once older, outdated house and make it a home, because after all, what is a home without the lives that dwell inside it?

WELCOME HOME, NEWLYWEDS! Purchasing a home is very much like falling in love. It is an empowering experience, one worthy of being proud of as you build the foundation for your marriage! It is exhilarating and exciting, however, a process that requires thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment. Keeping the lines of communication open, determining expectations and doing your due diligence will transform your Real Estate dreams into your new home reality. Whether this is your first time purchasing a home or you are combining properties to buy your dream home together, there are ways to ensure you are set up for success to find the perfect fit. DEFINE YOUR STYLE AS A COUPLE. The home you chose should reflect
both your individual personalities, as well as your new identity as a couple. To transform a house, to a home, look for the framework and the compilation of elements, that make you feel your best self. Then add your personal expression through décor, to produce creativity and comfort. Just as each home is different, every couple is unique; so no matter the size, shape or style of the home you choose, it is yours and being proud of this will come honestly.
CREATE A WISH LIST WITH A LITTLE WIGGLE ROOM. Know what you
can’t change or personalize over time. Who are you as a couple? Are you, fireplace/hosting or gorgeous kitchen/double islands? Do you prefer a large home with a low maintenance yard or a mature area with outdoor spaces and mature beautiful landscaping? Determine both a wish list and deal breakers. This will help you narrow down the type of home that best suits your lifestyle. Leave some room for compromise when you find a home that has the majority. You’ve heard “Location, location, location”, but I love “Location, layout & lot.” Before you sign on the dotted line, consider backyard sun, traditional vs. open concept, or even a larger lot as, after all, land appreciates more than the structure!
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. Budget should always be the first step. Before
you start shopping, it is crucial to meet with a mortgage broker for a pre-approval. This will ensure that the home you fall in love with, is not only attainable but complementary to your lifestyle. Set a budget that works for you and only look at homes within it! Trust me on this, there is a perfect home for every budget. Know your numbers, stick to them, and put the credit cards away while you house hunt! CONSIDER THE FUTURE. Your home should reflect not only your needs
today but also the needs of your future. While it is important to find the “right size” for the life you have, consider the next 5 years and ensure the home suits those needs as well. If you’ve been dreaming of starting a family, climbing the corporate ladder, or enjoying an elevated lifestyle with your partner, keep this consideration top of mind and ensure your home is versatile enough to suit your upcoming passions and pursuits. COMMUNICATE OPENLY. If you have questions, ask them! I guarantee there
are no questions worth leaving unanswered. Ask about neighbourhood, local amenities, demographic, walkability and the proximity of places you frequent. Not familiar with the working of the HVAC, or electronic Smart Home? Attend the home inspection and ask away! Open communication is the focus for confidence when writing an offer. WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL – The most critical parts of purchasing a
home, extend far beyond finding the perfect match. Your purchase is deserving of professional, attentive and knowledgeable service. Select an agent who will advocate for your interests, advise you on the offer price, bring new thought on negotiation strategies and act as your trusted proponent. Purchasing a home is likely the largest transaction you will undertake at this point in your life. It is your safe haven, personal retreat, and when chosen carefully, your home is the foundation that you will use to create, host, love and grow. It is a milestone where proud moments are to be enjoyed with the ones you love! AN EARTH-FRIENDLY RECEPTION B 142
The key to an eco- and style-conscious wedding is to keep it simple. By reusing materials and accents, you can save money and save resources at the same time. Work with what’s nearby and in season and you can feel good about your efforts.
a canoe (if your ceremony is near the water) or something classic like a horse-and-buggy carriage.
Alternative Flowers
When choosing your site, choose something with significance. If you’re looking for an outdoor event try a botanical garden or the grounds of a historical home in your area. You will probably even be able to find one that is run by a non-profit organization.
A symbol of the natural world, wedding flowers are a great place to make some eco-friendly choices. Investigate the origins of flowers and think about the pesticides that might have been used. Were they grown in an environmentally way? Cut flowers result in a lot of waste. Talk to your florist about conserving – maybe sharing your blooms with another party.
So many decorations! By decorating your ceremony site with items you can use at the reception – like arrangements that decorate the program area and then dress up your guest book table – you can save money and a lot of waste. When your magical evening is over see if there are any pieces you can donate to a hospital or the local nursing home.
Flowers that are pesticide-free show off a flower’s natural beauty. Some flowers, like roses, are so genetically engineered that they need to be sprayed with an artificial scent. Organic roses smell exactly how they should. And if you can’t find a florist in your area with organic blooms, there are a lot of options on the internet.
One of the most sustainable materials on earth is bamboo, and it makes a very modern-looking option for decorating. It can grow up to two feet a day, so it takes only three to seven years to mature, unlike trees! Use tall stalks of curly bamboo for centerpieces and lucky mini-bamboo stalks make a great wedding favour.
Potted plants, flowers or even small trees can make wonderful centerpieces, which can be transplanted later on. Use potted trees strung with lights to enhance your dance floor, or use a flowering bush (like hibiscus) to hang escort cards from.
Okay, so there might not be a hybrid limousine available yet, but there are a lot of other options out there. Some great ideas are tandem bicycles,
Your goal: support local nurseries by looking for locally grown, seasonal blooms. Talk to your florist to figure out what flowers fall into this category so you know what you can choose from. Using herbs, greenery and berries, you can do a lot of fill in.
EXTRA ECO TIPS
• rent the men’s formalwear
• find a vintage or used gown, then dress it up with accessories
• create a wedding website to keep your guests up-to-date on all the happenings with your wedding
• choose a dress made from organic cotton, silk or hemp – these materials are much more eco-friendly than a lot of other materials • rent your wedding gown • sell your wedding gown after the wedding (either through eBay or a local consignment store)
• use fewer programs, menus, etc – print one per couple or table, instead of one per person • encourage your guests to use gift bags that can be re-used • let your guests know you are having a 'green’ wedding and how they can do their part

M U M M C H A M PAG N E The atmosphere of the wine cellars in the Champagne region is unlike any other. The heart of the Champagne region is centred between the two major cities Reims and Epernay. Most Champagne Maisons have their cellars located within the city with the actual wine production happening in the countryside closer to the vineyards. G.H. Mumm has their cellars right in the centre of Reims and is one of the larger wine producers in the region. In fact, in 2019, Mumm was the fourth best selling Champagne brand in the world, which certainly was helped by the drive of their CEO Usain Bolt (Chief Entertainment Officer, in case you were wondering)!
G.H. Mumm was founded in 1827 by three brothers Jacobus, Gottlieb, and Phillip Mumm who were German winemakers from the Rhine valley. Just before World War I, the Mumm’s property was confiscated by the French government despite having lived in the area for almost a century. Mumm Champagne is easily identifiable by its Cordon Rouge (Red Ribbon) label and is famous for sponsoring many sporting events including: the Kentucky Derby, Melbourne Cup, and F1 racing. No other Champagne brand embraces the world of art quite as much as Pommery! The Champagne Maison visit is accented by beautiful and interesting contemporary art installations throughout the crayères and galleries where the wine is stored and aged. Each year, the theme of these annual temporary exhibitions changes and is curated by Madame Vranken. The Pommery Maison was founded in 1858 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno as a wool trading business. Under the direction of Alexandre’s widow, Louise Pommery, the business became dedicated to Champagne production. It became one of the region’s largest brands and the first to commercialize a brut Champagne in 1874.
The Pommery estate is one of the few Maisons to have crayères. These chalk tunnels with vaulted ceilings can extend up 30 meters high and are used for aging the wine. These caves began as quarries in the Middle Ages and are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the nearby Villa Demoiselle, a stunning piece of architecture that blends Art Nouveau with Art Deco. Created by Louise Pommery in 1909 and constructed by architect, Louis Sorel, this magnificent structure fits its setting in the beautiful grounds designed by Edouard Redont. DÉCOR, DESIGN & DETAILS WITH DAVID Thinking about the details when you are celebrating your special day, but also in the design of how you are executing the visuals is very important. Your wedding should simply feel and represent who you are as individuals, pulling inspiration from who you are as a couple. Wedding and entertaining extraordinaire David Tutera has your décor, design and details tips, that will get you down the aisle in style.
Adding your Personality Every couple has a story. Personalize your special day; define your own unique look and feel. Adding an extra special touch, that is special to you and your fiancé. You can really do anything you want. Just remember to have fun creating the details of your wedding.
Don’t underestimate the power of the glow. Candles, Candles, Candles. Reflect romance and ambiance to help to tell the story of your personal love story. A simple and affordable way to express yourself and your wants; using your imagination and having a keepsake arrangement that will last a lifetime.
Décor is all in the details. Simplicity of rose petals. Accent to floral design. Loose crystals in bouquets, escort cards, place cards. The little details are what makes a signature wedding. What truly makes the wedding YOUR wedding.

Carmel and Regan met during the fall of 2010 through mutual friends, both were dating other people at the time. Fast forward to October 2013, they reconnected through Facebook over their love of travel. Regan was at Oktoberfest in Germany at the time, Carmel was in Edmonton walking in the Western Canada Fashion week. They exchanged pictures (Carmel couldn't resist the short leather lederhosen) and stories and talked about their recent trips to Portugal, as both had recently been. They attended an Edmonton Eskimos game together where the stories continued and neither of them even noticed the score of the game. Finding time to spend together became a top priority, and creative date ideas began to pop up. Everything from sushi making and sake night, to putting bubble bath in the hot tub on a cold fur hat evening. Weekends were now filled with adventures together like snowshoeing, lake days, and ice fishing. During the week, work couldn’t finish soon enough to spend time together. They dated for 4 years before getting engaged on Christmas 2017, then after a 20-month engagement were married on August 24, 2019 at The Whitewood Barn. It was the most magical day, surrounded by all the love of their friends and family. Carmel wanted a venue that had beauty in itself and focus on simple décor with romantic elements. Regan wanted a short ceremony and a great party! They both wanted fun and a little surprise! It went off without a hitch and was everything they imagined. After a less than average Edmonton summer, the weather surprised us with the perfect sunny summer day. The girls sipped mimosas in the bridal suite during hair and makeup, as the guys enjoyed their time skeet shooting out in the back field before getting suited up. Carmel and Regan then shared an intimate first look to take in a moment to themselves before the I-dos. The Bride’s personal details include a necklace of her late Grandma’s that was also worn by her Aunt, Sister and numerous Cousins on their wedding days and will continue to be passed down in the family, and a bouquet charm holding a picture of her dad to have him close as she walked down the aisle, escorted by her mom and stepdad. The outdoor ceremony was hidden amongst the lush trees, intimate and sweet. Following the ceremony was a social hour of lawn games, hard iced tea on tap and a mac n cheese bar, both homemade by the groom himself. Smoke bombs were set off in the distance as the wedding party started photos. The reception was a beautiful barn setting with big gorgeous chandeliers, wooden tables with greenery runners, white candles and gold accents throughout. Dinner included a special family recipe homemade by the Mother of the Groom and dessert was pies all homemade by the Mother of the Bride. A walk on the clouds first dance ended formalities and got the party started. There was an energized buzz of excitement in the air, and the dance floor was flooded with friends and family embracing the moment and bustin’ their best moves. The music was fantastic, the libations flowed, the dance floor was full until the last possible moment. In the blink of an eye, the celebration was over with many fond memories to reflect back on!

licia and Sheldon most decidedly wanted to create a celebration that focused on family, traditions and fun. The wedding day started with a light drizzle of rain and both the bride and groom were very convinced that by the time the afternoon ceremony came about, the rain would let up. One of the first family focused elements of their day was Alicia’s surprise for her mother. Alicia’s mother had lovingly hand embroidered a beautiful silk veil for months before the wedding, she even tatted a ring bearer pillow and beautiful lace clutch for the flower girl. Alicia saw all these little things her mother was doing and knew she had to do something meaningful for her mother. She sewed one of her deceased grandfather’s Navy dog tags into the closure of her dress herself, and kept this a surprise until her mother went to do up the gown. Mom, who was already excited and emotional to see her little girl getting married, nearly fell over when she
discovered this very touching piece of her father’s history, so lovingly included by her daughter. By about noon, the clouds broke and there was sunshine for nearly 45 minutes. Unfortunately, by the time the ceremony began, it was not only raining, but a complete torrential downpour. The guests at this wedding were a hardy crew and they all sat through the ceremony huddled under umbrellas and wrapped in jackets trying to keep warm. The rain came down so hard that the signing of the wedding documents had to be postponed until the reception dinner. As soon as the ceremony was complete, most of the guests made a mad dash to their vehicles and straight to hotel rooms to attempt drying off and warming up. The mother of the groom and the mother of the bride had other plans, these two free-spirited women embraced each other, held hands and

took a running skip through the rain, laughing and giggling like little girls. They were just so excited to see their children married and couldn’t wait to celebrate. The bride’s family had a secret recipe for their own unique moonshine which was lovingly referred to as “panther piss”. Alicia’s father shared a very coveted bottle of this with a small group of family and close friends to toast their union. After dinner, many family members shared stories and spoke to the newlyweds, sharing advice, love, tears and laughter. The bride’s grandmother was responsible for the wedding cake as it was a traditional Norwegian Kransekake (This type of cake is actually a series of concentric circles stacked on top of each other and have more of a cookie consistency than cake). One of the traditions for the Kransekake is how the couple “cuts” it, instead of using a knife to cut slices, both bride
and groom put their hand on the top circle of the cake and lift, depending on the number of rings that come off the stack, that is the prediction for how many children they will have. Alicia and Sheldon had the good fortune of actually lifting the entire cake up, for a total of 18-20 children. Alicia was adamant that they give it a second go, and the official number is closer to five. When the dancing began, the guests were delighted to watch the bride’s father dance with grandma in his traditional highland regalia. One of the highlights of the evening was a surprise appearance by a sloth and a unicorn (the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom dressed head to toe in ridiculous inflatable Halloween costumes) to the delight and amusement of the bride. As the evening wore on, a limbo pole came out and many guests demonstrated their flexibility. Before the festivities were complete, the beloved shotski appeared and merriment was had by all!

Charlotte &Dean F
rom the moment Dean and I fell in love, we knew we had found our life partner. The big milestones in our relationship came and went with barely a discussion. After a year together, we bought our home, and a year after that we got engaged. The day we signed the contract to buy our home, I asked Dean if we were going to get married. Turns out we hadn’t discussed it before. He said “Yes, I was planning on it!” so I signed on the dotted line, and we started planning our wedding as soon as we moved in together. Our main goal for the wedding was that our guests have fun, but also that it look like a scene from a painting. We set up a photo booth, styled to look like a 17th century painting. People had so much fun and we got some of our favorite wedding pictures from that booth.
Dean and I are both artists, and we have a deep appreciation for fine art and literature. To us, our relationship was a fairy tale, so we wanted to reflect that in our decor. The thing I love about fairy tales is how dark they can be sometimes, so it was important we had that edge to our event. Even our programs were designed to look like a fairy tale novel. The tables were covered in wine red, gold with touches of greenery and apples. I loved the idea of apples as an added pop of color. They are a unique way to add color, inexpensive, and a classic metaphor in literature and art. Bell jars adorned the tables with sculptures inspired by literature and taxidermy. We filled in the gaps with vintage books and candlesticks. We wanted our wedding to be a work of art, like our relationship, and I believe we were successful.

Wedding Theme and Colours Fun and stress-free!! We wanted the day to be laid back, relaxed, beachy and chill for both our guests and ourselves. We chose to have neutral attire with some pops of pastel/vibrant island colours (coral, yellows, soft pink, and lush greens). Top 3 Wedding Moments
B
1) The first look- I am so happy that we decided to have this special time together prior to the initial ceremony. We wrote our own vows and read them privately during the first look. The minute I saw Darren’s face, all of the stresses and worries of the day just faded away. I don’t even know how to properly put those feelings into words. Our photographers were so easy going and were able to capture very special moments without us feeling any pressure. It was an experience I will never forget. We have our handwritten vows framed above our bed :)

2) Darren’s vows to Kinsley (Ceremony)- Darren wrote his own vows for Kinsley and had a special ring made for her that consists of her birthstone (Ruby) in a heart shape surrounded by our birthstones. I have never seen her eyes look at us the way they did at that moment and when I think back I still see her little face full of so much joy. Looking at the photos still brings tears to my eyes. 3) The reception toasts and the groomsmen dance-off. Both of our families did an incredible job delivering their toasts, especially the parents. We were blown away by their words and having all of these people here with us meant the world to us both. The groomsmen danceoff had the entire crowd howling with laughter… thanks to Barb and Megan for capturing that !!! Top 4 Wedding Details 1. Dress- Calla Blanche Rebecca 17115- This dress could not have been more perfect for the tropical Hawaiian climate. It was light, and stretchy, and I did not once feel restricted at all- I joked that I could probably do a full squat in it with no problem! Thanks to the Bridal Boutique in Edmonton for their help with this.
Michelle &Darren
2. Flowers- with a destination wedding, couples are placing trust in people to understand their vision. Country Bouquets Maui created the most beautiful arrangements and garlands I have ever seen. When we talked, I told her of my vision and that I didn’t really have a colour scheme but I explained wanting pops of colour throughout. She took this vision and made it a reality. The accents of the terrariums on the cocktail tables were one of my favourite things. 3. The Venue/ plantation house: The venue took our breath away. The historical aspects of the plantation house and the preservation of its character was so interesting and unique. 4. Remembrance candle and signage: Darren and I both lost siblings, as well as a few other very important people in our lives (grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc). We wanted something to honour them and recognize their presence with us on our wedding day and always.

Memorable Moment We were lucky enough to have my 86 year old grandma fly to Maui and enjoy the day with us. She and I have had a very close relationship and this meant so much to me. Bernnard proposed to Aanu 2 years later over a fantastic dinner at one of their favourite restaurants in Pittsburgh with a view of the city. The wedding took place in the summer with wedding colours of gold, creme, navy and green to connote fresh, clean and classic simplicity. It was a full day affair with a morning Nigerian Traditional Wedding Engagement ceremony followed by the Western Ceremony that afternoon. ake and I met 12 years ago through my brother and have been close ever since. Our friendship grew into a relationship and were together for almost 3 ½ years when we got engaged on January 18th, 2018. Our engagement was in Jamaica on the Sandals Resort in Ochi Rios. We were engaged for a year and 8 months before we got married in September 2019. It was absolutely the best day of our lives and could not have hoped or dreamed of it going differently. So much love was in the air that day you could stick out your finger and touch it. It was a perfect and magical day. Our colors were sage green, burgundy and quartz. The theme of the wedding was elegant and rustic.

asper Pride, April 21, 2018. With friends a few chairs behind us, Stephen
awkwardly, but romantically, pulled a ring from his ski jacket and said “here” as he asked me to be his husband. Naturally, I said “Of course” as our helmets banged together as we kissed, and cheers erupted behind us. From that point, we hit-the-ground-running with planning – every concept had to be created “non-traditional”. All “typical” wedding traditions were thrown out for unique and different ways to celebrate our special day. Our vision was a “wedding experience-like-no-other”. Our theme was modern and slick – trendy and classy. The typical “bridal party” was our “groom crew” consisting of our two sisters on each side. We wore black, classic, custom-tailored tuxes by Indochino, and were complimented with champagne dresses that were not only worn by the groom crew but FLAUNTED.

The cloudy, misty skies provided an incredible photo and video backdrop (who really wants sunny, blue-sky photos on the biggest day of your life anyways!), at downtown Edmonton locations where we typically hang – the 104-street market (where we shop on Saturdays), a rooftop parkade and scenic river valley. We were escorted around in two classic cars (’64 Chevy, and ’68 Lincoln with red velvet seats… need we say more?) by drivers who were passionate about their pimpin’ rides. The ceremony was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Downtown Edmonton in the Sun Gallery room which featured floor-to-ceiling windows, modern lighting, crystal chateau chairs and cement pillars with a beautiful view of Edmonton’s renowned river valley. A live cello quartet welcomed us into the ceremony, with a spin on the grooms’ song “Simply the Best”. Jason’s aunt was the officiant – a sweet, little Hungarian voice-over artist who won over the 140 guests with her intimate knowledge of the grooms, telling their story of “how fate brought them together” and that the celebration was not only “the joining of two people, but rather, two families”. The reception venue was a wedding-planners dream: The Parlour Italian Kitchen & Bar, – a modern bi-level, brick space with lots of natural light, signature bar and an Il Forno oven for those delicious late-night pizzas. The energetic staff were ready for a party!
Stephen &Jason
The reception concept: focus on socializing. Cocktail party with a huge selection of custom, craft cocktails. Masculine décor featuring high-top tables, gun metal stools, leather lounge seating, and custom lighting design set the mood. Warm, inviting patio for cozying up next to the wood-burning fireplace. Passed hors’dourves and charcuterie to start, followed by plenty of chef action-stations, including Jason’s sisters’ “Passionate Perogies”. Dessert charcuterie – a first-time concept by The Art of Cake. A roving magician. Minimal, but quality speeches. Hilarious emcees. Confetti cannons and balloon drops. Cheesy video from the grooms. A perfectly-timed meteor that whistled across the sky as we all watched from the patio. And the piece de resistance – The Grand Dueling Piano Show featuring Katie, Spenser and Sean – who had our guests singing and dancing for hours, followed by DJ Johnny Law who continued the party well into the morning. Upon reflection, the day was magical. The highlight: the comradery amongst our guests was above-and-beyond what we envisioned – as our friends, family, colleagues, staff and entertainers all treated each other as if they had known each other forever. We didn’t simply have a wedding, we had the wedding!

Kasia &Marco W
e met Kasia and Marco at the Bridal Fantasy fair last winter. Marco has experience in the printing industry. Thus, when he saw our albums, he became interested of how they are made and the quality of the print. Kasia was interested in our photography style. After getting to know this lovely couple from Vancouver, we knew that we have great chemistry and it would be so fun to capture their special day. So, here is a bit of their story... Kasia and Marco met at Marco's cousin's wedding in Vancouver. Marco was a groomsman and Kasia was a wedding planner. It was love at first sight. Few years after they met, Marco proposed to Kasip on New Year's night at his home in Edmonton. A year later the couple moved in Edmonton and had a beautiful wedding celebration. Prior to their wedding, we had a winter engagement photo session at the Ice Castles event. Where I got to meet their two lovely puppies. Bundled up in warm clothes, we truly enjoyed this magical winter session. Next, we captured their wedding celebration on a cloudy summer day; it was a truly flawless day. Perhaps because Kasia has an experience in wedding planning, she was able to find such a great wedding planner. Every special moment and every detail of the wedding was perfect, including our downtown mural trip. A month before the wedding, together with our newlyweds we scouted several mural locations and planned a special trip after the church ceremony. It was so handy to have a Limo bus on the wedding day. We were able to travel with the wedding party to Old Strathcona and downtown murals and capture the fun atmosphere in the limo in between each stop. When we arrived at the venue, we were awed by the beauty of the decor. The dusty rose, green and white colour scheme was enhanced by warm candle lit ambiance of the hall. And of course, no party would be complete without great DJ music and a delicious meal well served. Both Kasia and Marco expressed so much love and care to every guest at their celebration. Especially memorable part of the evening was their speech to family and friends. We were all got touched by their happy tears and sincere words. I have never met a couple who was loved and admired by so many people. It was a true pleasure to be part of this heartwarming Italian/Polish wedding.

his wedding was truly a collaboration of the wedding industry coming together to grant a wish for someone that was terminally ill. Gregg and Jenny’s story was an inspiring one for anyone who is in love. They lived each day to the fullest even after Gregg’s terminal diagnosis.
for a few more days each time we talked about the plans. Jenny was a trooper through the whole process and really gave a vision of what they like and the vendors were able to make it happen. A week almost to the day of the wedding Gregg passed away surrounded by family and friends.
Gregg uses all his energy to be able to have the wedding of their dreams. We feel it all gave him the courage to hold on
The wedding touched everyone’s heart. It was truly a humbling experience for all of us and certainly a highlight in all of our careers.

amie and I met the cliché, old-fashioned way – in a bar. It was a random Thursday night and a girlfriend of mine invited me out for a drink, and after some convincing, I decided to go. Little did I know, I was about to meet the love of my life. She had invited out some guy friends to meet us and I first locked eyes with Jamie on the street outside of Billiard Club on Whyte Avenue. We spent the night playing pool, and although I am sure Jamie wanted to trade partners, as I am not exactly a “pool shark”, that is where it all began.

After 5 years of love, Jamie planned a photoshoot and completely surprised me by getting down on one knee and asking me to be his wife. We have the exact moment when he popped the question caught on camera; it was picture perfect! Shortly after, the wedding planning began. We knew we wanted a fall wedding and something a bit different – a moody & edgy, modern take on romance. Our venue was the perfect blank slate to take on our vision, with industrial cement floors, striking barn doors, and exposed beam ceilings. We kept the colour palette dark with shades of grey and black throughout, letting Jamie’s bold burgundy-wine suit stand-out! Gorgeous dark florals, gold geometrics and flickering candlelight, helped to keep the space feeling cozy and intimate, while the pops of neon signs brought some unexpected flair – including a custom neon sign made by our friend that hung as the backdrop of the photobooth. To switch up our seating arrangement, we incorporated a mix of round, with long harvest tables and ‘x’ tables and kept all our favourite people closer together and had a gorgeous vintage seating area just off the dance floor to rest your feet after showing off your best dance moves. We loved the mix of rich textures from the unique sequined lace on my dress to the velvet on the bridesmaid dresses and Jamie’s skull embossed velvet loafers and of course, my custom painted leather jacket. Everything came together seamlessly and the biggest compliment to hear was that our wedding was so “us”, perfectly representing our style. We headed back to the exact place we first met outside of Billiard Club for our very special first look. And to keep with our urban, edgy theme, we headed downtown for more pictures getting some epic shots in Mercer Tavern, Baijiu, and in the middle of Jasper Avenue before heading to Fort Edmonton Park for our ceremony.
Victoria &Jamie
There was not a dry eye in the house during our emotional, heartfelt vows and speeches. We were and still are overwhelmed by all the love we felt on our wedding day. We are so grateful to all our friends and family that travelled from near and far to celebrate our love with us, especially those that travelled all the way from Scotland! We cannot wait to share many more adventures together and continue to love each other – the maximum amount!

would say we went for a Rustic/ Glam theme, but my most important theme was throwing a fun party. It’s suppose to be a celebration about Love and that’s what we wanted everyone to feel. The color scheme was pastels and sparkly gold. Nick proposed in the St. Albert Botanic Park last summer. He planned the whole thing, down to his family surprising me from California. Right after I said yes I turned around and my family and his popped out from hiding to celebrate with us, and then we went back and had a party at my parent’s house, same place as the ceremony.

The proposal was a unique one, and one that will stay with us forever. It all started at his surprise 40th birthday party in the summer of 2017. His birthday was in March, but he was away working. Craig and I love camping in the back country so I planned his birthday party in June and I knew that it would be a surprise for sure seeing it was 3 months late. The surprise was a great one, he had no idea and the turnout was great. Lots of close friends as well as family from both sides showed up for the weekend campout. The weekend turned out to be an absolute blast. Friday and Saturday were busy just being with friends and family and enjoying the time together. I had no idea that Craig was up to his own surprise for me! Unknown to me, Craig had called on one of his friends who wasn’t there to travel to his work site and retrieve the ring he had been closely guarding for the last few months while he waited for the perfect time to propose. Saturday evening, he gathered everyone around the fire “to thank everyone” as he put it. After thanking everyone for coming he began to ramble on about what a great partner I was, how special I am to him and he had really turned the attention of everyone to me at that point. I didn’t like it a whole bunch. At this time, I am sitting down facing the fire, everyone standing and sitting in a circle around the fire, and he is standing behind me nervously rubbing my shoulders while he spoke. I was listening to him speak and hoping soon he would take the attention off of me… but he carried on “Lauren is the best thing that ever happened to me, I could see myself spending the rest of my life with her. But the question is, could she see herself spending the rest of her life with me?” The look on the crowds’ face told me that potentially a proposal had just sort of taken place. I spun my head around in disbelief. There he was in front of all of our people, on one knee with a sparkling princess cut diamond ring in his hand. I screamed “what, WHAT, WHAT” I was in total disbelief. He continued “Lauren Flessatti, will you marry me?” I cried. I bawled. Through the tears and crying, I somehow managed to say yes. Our wedding day was a dream come true. We went back to Jamaica, as that is where we took our very first holiday together. We said “I Do” on the windy pier over the ocean, and celebrated the night on the sandy beaches, with rose gold and sparkles, and everything I ever dreamed of! The rest is history, here we are. Living the good life. We have 3 beautiful children, and couldn’t be happier. Our wish is that everyone could find a love like this.

ctober in the Canadian Rockies can be an unpredictable time of year to have an outdoor wedding ceremony, but Rebecca and Zak had the good fortune of sunshine and a warm Chinook breeze to welcome them into their married life. Some weddings focus on lavish dĂŠcor and host hundreds of guests, Rebecca and Zak selected to surround themselves with the beauty of the mountains they adore and family members they love for their very private and intimate ceremony. The day began with Rebecca getting primped and pampered at Maddpretty Salon in Calgary, while Zak got ready in their home. Friends and family members convened at Barrier Lake with the bride and groom. On the drive to Kananaskis, from Calgary, there was a prevailing northwest wind which had
a bit of a bite to it. By the time the officiant Tamara Jones arrived, that wind had shifted to a gentle, warm chinook from the west and the ceremony was perfect. Just before the group arrived at the ceremony site, a group of kayakers had gathered and were providing a good deal of entertainment doing tricks and rolling their vessels, while the guests got settled for the vows. After Rebecca and Zak said “I do, they celebrated with a lovely bottle of champagne and a toast to their friends and family. The newlyweds spent some quiet moments together just enjoying the excitement of becoming Mr and Mrs. before they headed to Banff to finish off their evening with a private dinner in the Sky Bistro atop the Banff Gondola.

obbie and I met in Fort McMurray in 2009 playing baseball. We both loved the sport. Fast forward 8 years, a move to Edmonton, a house, a dog and a little girl, he finally decided to pop the question. He is not the hugely romantic type, but he had won a $400 gift certificate from his hair salon which he had given to me to use. I was 6 weeks post baby at this time, so I was a stressed out new mom who needed a little TLC. So I went to the salon that morning, got my hair coloured and curled and came home. He told me I needed to get ready because he was taking me out for supper. We ended up going to LUX Steakouse just him and I; the whole time, a ring was the furthest from my mind. We had just gotten our desert, and he says to me, “I hope today has showed you a bit of how important you are to me”. To which I reply that I had the perfect day and thanked him for spoiling me and giving me a night out. He looks me right in the eyes and says “So you weren’t expecting this then?” as he slides an open ring box over the table and asks me to marry him. It was a perfect evening, indeed.
We didn’t have a major theme for our wedding, just wanted to keep it as light and airy feeling as possible. The girls all wore dusty blue skirts with white shirts, and the guys light grey. We had greenery with white roses surrounding glass vases with floating candles on all the tables at the ceremony. We wanted the feeling of the night to be the love in the room between us and from all our friends and family. Our head table was adorned with greenery garlands and fairy lights. Behind the head table was a copper arch and 2 copper hoops on a white drape backing. Rainer Gardens was the perfect outdoor venue for us. We didn’t need to decorate too much as the beauty of nature around us created the perfect feeling for our day. The trees had just started to turn yellow and we really wanted that to be the accent of the ceremony. We had an arbor made by a family friend draped with white cloth, and 3 terrariums made by a coworker to decorate the venue, and that was it. The wooden benches and wooden barrels part of the ceremony were just beautiful and didn’t need any more decorating than that.

ur love story, started in December of 2016 when we met by chance, while staying at the Fairmont Whistler, each on snowboarding trips, with friends. We spent the weekend on the hill together, trading stories, getting to know each other and laughing over dinners and wine, not knowing that our accidental love story would turn into forever. After returning home to separate cities, James began making the trip to Calgary and within a few dates and some classic courting, we were inseparable, living for the weekends we could visit one another. Over the next two years we travelled endlessly and took every chance we had to spend time together. We went on an African safari, enjoyed friends’ weddings in Hawaii and Mexico, spent weekends together in different cities and eventually took our dream vacation to Australia, spending the New Year together island hopping and adventuring. It was on this trip, our dreams of forever started to form.

Upon our return from Australia, we bought a house together in Calgary as we continued long distance and a few short months after that, Kaitlyn followed her heart and moved from Calgary to Edmonton to start their life together. James booked a beautiful trip back to Whistler, where we took the train from Edmonton to Vancouver in a gorgeous Via Rail car through the mountains. On 11.11.18 (as Kaitlyn always makes a wish at 11:11) everything came full circle, when James got down on one knee, in the same hotel they first met and proposed. Whistler & Vancouver are special to us for so many reasons; the place we met, the city we have shared some of our most special memories, where we got engaged and finally married. It is the place we professed our love to one another, in front our family, friends and the people we love the most when we vowed, forever. Our wedding exceeded every hope, dream and expectation. It was a day we will cherish for our entire lives and one we often still reminisce and think of with happiness and love. It solidified our bond and gave us the foundation to build a life we are proud of, together.
Kaitlyn &James
We hosted a formal rehearsal dinner in the Chairman’s suite at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, for 20 of our closest friends and family, the evening before the wedding. It was absolutely breathtaking and truly felt like a wedding in and of itself. It allowed us time to personally thank and celebrate with those who have impacted our lives and prepare for the monumental day ahead. We chose a small, intimate wedding party with Stephanie Martin (sister of the bride) as maid of honor, Greyson & Ezra Martin (our nephew’s and godson) as our ring bearers, Brent Poirier (best friend and business partner to the groom) and Christopher Martin (brother in law and long time friend) as our emcee. Having a small wedding party allowed our day to intimate, peaceful and reflective, surrounded by family. The rehearsal dinner gave us the opportunity to invite a larger party of loved ones we wanted to acknowledge in a more private setting. The Collective You took portraits of our guests as we enjoyed champagne under the sun, prior to dinner. Our three dogs joined us in all of the celebrations and truly made us feel at home! Our ceremony began at 11:30am at The Rosewood Hotel Georgia. The Spanish Ballroom we chose, was opulent, romantic and the perfect setting for our ceremony, which meant everything to us. We had a string quartet with classic wedding music and wrote our own vows as an expression of our love and commitment to the life we are building

together. The old world elegance of the hotel set the perfect tone for the day. It was intimate, soft, romantic and classic. Our reception started out with a saxophone and piano duet during cocktails at The Fairmont Pacific Rim. The modern marble, gorgeous lobby and breathtaking views of the water were exactly what we were looking for our reception. We envisioned a black-tie wedding that felt decadent, royal and romantic. Most importantly, we wanted our guests feel loved, special and treated as a symbol of thanks and to acknowledge how honoured we were, to have them celebrate with us, on our special day. Our décor was based on rich colors, opulent florals, soft pastels, French blue and lots of gold. We had cloud florals on every table and a room filled with candles and fresh blooms. Our cake featured gold butterflies which have always been special to us as a couple and something we incorporate into our home and décor. We worked with the chef to create an extremely special menu and dined with our loved ones over some of the most special words we will ever share. The speeches our family shared with us as well as the beautiful slide show my sister created, were highlights of our evening. The evening opened with our first dance to Ellie Gouldings “How long will I love you”, and ended surrounded by all of our friends and family in our suite. The Collective You took portraits of all of our guests as a gift from us, to each of them, and created a wall of all of the people we love, where each guest signed their portrait with their wishes for our marriage. Our wedding, was the most magical evening we have ever experienced, one we will look back on with love, for all of our life.

E M P OW E R M E N T • M A NAG I NG S T R E S S
M A NAG I NG S T R E S S I’m sure you have dreamed about this moment your entire life. The day when the person you love gets down on one knee and says those four special words, “Will you marry me?” Time seems to stand still, and all you feel is pure bliss. Happiness. There is nowhere else you would rather be. It is moments like this where you are experiencing being in the “now”. Fully immersed in the present. But what follows after can sometimes pull you away from this: wedding planning. Planning a wedding can be one of the most exciting yet stressful times for brides and grooms. From choosing a venue and wedding cake to coordinating the guest list and decor, it requires a lot of your attention and energy. It is at this time where practicing self care, staying centered, and remembering your “why” is so important. The solution? Meditation and yoga.
What exactly is meditation and yoga? Simply put, meditation is a mind and body practice that has a history of use for increasing calmness, improving mental and physical health, reducing stress, and enhancing overall wellbeing. We can classify meditation into three streams; concentration, mindfulness, and guided. Concentration meditation is focusing our full attention on a word or mantra, an image, or our breath. Mindful meditation is when we become fully aware of the present moment without creating attachments or judgements. Guided meditation is when a teacher leads you through the meditative process. This can be experienced through hypnotherapy or yoga nidra. Yoga is a mind and body practice with over 5000 years of history from India. Various styles of yoga include hatha, power, kundalini, and yin, to name a few. These different styles combine physical postures, or asana, breathing techniques, meditation, and yogic philosophy. According to the Yoga Alliance, “Millions of people use various aspects of Yoga to help raise their quality of life in such diverse areas as fitness, stress relief, wellness, vitality, mental clarity, healing, peace of mind and spiritual growth.”
Where and when should I practice? Now, this is the great thing; yoga and meditation can be practiced anytime, anywhere! Firstly, I recommend checking out your local yoga or meditation studio. The benefits of going to a live class is foremost safety. The yoga or meditation teacher is able to address any injuries or ailments that you may facing and offer personalized modifications for you. A live teacher will also be able to explain the breathing, asana, or meditation techniques and providing instant feedback for an effective and safe practice.
We have so many great yoga studios and instructors in YEG, so I know you’ll find one that fits well with your lifestyle, goals, and schedule. If you are too busy in between dress fittings and cake tasting to attend a live class, I recommend downloading apps such as Alo Moves or Headspace. Both give you access to a large variety of classes and exercises to choose from.
Why Meditate and Do Yoga? Research has shown that meditation and yoga can help improve sleep, decrease anxiety, and increase muscle tone. These are physical benefits that I am sure every bride and groom would enjoy; however, the real benefit is something much deeper: presence. As you are busy preparing for the wedding day, your mindset is on that future moment and not here in the “now”. Because of this, it is easy to miss out on the remarkable experiences that are happening throughout the process; like your best friend rocking the karaoke to Spice Girls on your bachelorette, or your mom’s face when she sees you for the first time in your wedding dress. It’s cliche, but the saying, “it’s not about the destination but the journey” couldn’t ring more true. You are going to create once in a lifetime memories during this time, so it’s important to practice being present. Incorporating meditation and yoga into your daily or weekly routine will help you enjoy these moments even deeper, keep you calm on your wedding day, and help you live life to its fullest during this special time in your life. Most importantly, meditation will help you come back to your “why”. Weddings are incredible life events, but at the end of it all, it’s not about the dress or the ring, it’s about that person who said those four special words and made time stand still.

4 QU ESTIONS BEFOR E "I DO"
B 191
If you want your marriage to last forever, you need to ask 4 questions before you say, “I do.” Most couples plan a dream wedding and hope for a dream marriage. Divorce statistics suggest few couples get both. The Canadian divorce rate is 38-40%. The American divorce rate is 40-50% for first marriages and 60-75% for second and subsequent marriages. Why do so many couples try so hard and fail? Many of those couples were fundamentally incompatible and didn’t find out until after the wedding. They got infatuated before they got educated (about each other). A great wedding can’t fix a bad match. What if you could find out if you’re compatible on a deep level before you said, “I do?” If you openly and honestly discuss the 4 questions in this article, you’ll have a pretty good idea. The 4 questions are about sex, money, children and religion. Even before you discuss those topics, you need to identify your core values, the relationship deal breakers, the things you must have and can’t tolerate to be happy and fulfilled. A forever marriage should be full of love, joy, passion and connection every day. What do you need to feel that with your partner? You have to be brutally honest with yourself about your must haves and can’t tolerates, and many of them may center around the 4 questions. If one of your core values directly conflicts with one of your partner’s core values, you’re not compatible. If the woman feels she must have children and the man is repulsed by the idea of bringing children into the world, they’re not compatible, because one of them must give up who they are as a person to be with the other.
If your core values are aligned (or at least not in conflict), you need to discuss sex, money, children and religion. The sex discussion includes each person’s definition of fidelity, their physical needs and their expectations. The money discussion involves finding out whether the two of you are spenders or savers and agreeing on saving, budgeting and financial responsibility. The religion discussion centers on each of your belief systems, how strongly you adhere to the tenants of your faith, how strongly each of your parents adhere to their faith, and how you’ll handle religious instruction of your children. The discussion about children should take the most time because of their importance and you’re total responsibility for them and their welfare. The questions about children for a couple who have no children are extensive. The questions are even more extensive where one partner is bringing children to the marriage. Both discussions are critically important, because divorce is expensive financially and emotionally and is devastating and damaging to children. You can learn more about these questions and how to create a Diamond Marriage; one that will stand the test of time, in my book, “UnVeiled: Secrets to a Marriage that Lasts Forever” and at www.relationshipmagicacademy.com.
Stan grew up in Kentucky, graduated from high school in Alabama, graduated from Auburn Uni-versity at Montgomery in 1979, and from Duke University School of Law in 1982. He has been a business trial lawyer in Tampa since 1982. Stan married his high school sweetheart when they were 18 and 17 years old (after an 18-month engagement). In July 2018, they celebrated 42 years of marriage. They beat the odds of teenage marriage, attending college and law school with small children, a high stress profession, raising children, and now helping to raise grandchildren. They're best friends and love spending time to-gether. Relationship Magic Academy was founded to teach other couples the principles Stan and Linda learned through trial and error and used to create a Diamond Marriage; because marriage should be forever too.
