We are delighted to be bringing you the Summer issue of the Elyi Magazine. There is such alot going on and we love this season as Ely comes alive with event after event. See the opposite page for something a bit fun and interesting. It adds a dimension that is sure to appeal to the inner geek in all of us. We are really hoping that it will enable our Business here in Elyand Community groups in Ely and beyond to connect even more easily. The next time you do something interesting, film it and make is easily available to readers via interactive print! Some of the regular groups have a break during the months of July and August, e.g. there are fewer talks and meetings, but we have the River based event that is Aquafest, the ever popular Ely Folk Festival and a quite remarkeable fortnight of events under the Ousefest umbrella. What a fantastic celebration of Fenland Life and Landscape. You can scan and connect with the full programme on page 26. One other piece of exciting news is that because of the encouraging support we have received from advertisers and readers, we are planning to increase the magazine frequency to monthly in January 2016. So on that positive note, Madeleine and i wish you a fantastic activity filled summer. Bridget

Interactive Print....Welcome to the Future Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls! The Elyi magazine is very excited to announce that the distant future has become the very real present, that hover boards and holidays to Mars are just around the corner, and that we’re taking you with us! With the help of some sophisticated technology The Elyi magazine is now enhanced and interactive. It will still pop through your letterbox in its usual 3D real-world form, but we’ve also added a secret 4th dimension; if you have a smartphone handy, you can immediately link to online content to see lots of exciting, additional instant information about things that interest you! Intrigued? Perplexed? Excited? Good! Let us explain… Cutting-edge technology called augmented reality (AR) gives digitally enhanced viewing, giving you access to more content and, well, sparkly animations. What this means is that when you hold your smartphone over the page, the words and pictures will come to life – think Harry Potter, but without all the mild peril and owls.
It is easy to use for everyone – honest! However, the beauty of it is that if you don’t have a smartphone, you can still enjoy the magazine in the traditional way. You know, by reading words like we did in the good old days. Nevertheless, if you haven’t got a smartphone, we reckon it would be worth you finding a friend who does, so that you can marvel at the wonders of science together.
So, how does one make this leap into cyber-space? 1. Download the FREE Layar App for android or iphone. 2. Look for the LAYAR Symbol on various adverts and pages. 3.
Simply hold your phone over the advert and tap the screen! This is where the fun happens. Before your very eyes, articles and adverts will display photos, play videos and music straight from the page and link seamlessly to websites.
Would you like to win a £25 amazon voucher? Of course you do! Here’s how… Hidden in the magazine are 5 treasure chests, visible only with the Layar App. When you see the Layar App icon on a page, give it a scan with your smartphone and see what appears! You’re looking for a treasure chest of gold here – story of our lives eh?! Anyway, when you’ve found all five treasure chests, send the page numbers to editor@elyimagazine.com and you’ll be entered into the draw. Deadline is the 10th of August. Good luck treasure hunters!
Don’t forget... If you want to advertise your business with an interactive advert, don’t hesitate to get in touch. It’s super easy, we do it all for you. Tel: Mads on 01353 664920/ 07739 260 027

Something to declare? If you have untaxed income and HMRC finds out later that you owe tax, you could get penalties or face criminal prosecution. HMRC run campaigns to encourage people to declare untaxed income under the best possible terms with penalties frequently halved.
rental income in exchange for the best possible terms from HMRC.
Question I have been renting out a house for a number of years but have never told HMRC. What are my obligations?
Question I have a job but also some additional income from making and selling jewellery at craft fayres, do I need to tell HMRC? Answer Yes, if you are receiving an untaxed second income you can make a ‘voluntary disclosure’ under HMRCs Second Incomes Campaign
Answer If you are receiving income from renting out a residential property you should have told HMRC and you may have Income Tax to pay. You are obliged to submit a tax return if gross rents are over £10,000 per annum, or the profit is more than £2,500pa. Below these thresholds HMRC may agree to collect any tax via your tax code and remove the need for a tax return. If you should have paid tax on the income then you may have penalties, tax and interest to pay. HMRC’s Let Property Campaign provides the opportunity to come forward and disclose
Ely Tax & Accountancy would be happy to help get your affairs up to date and liaise with HMRC on your behalf if you think either Campaign is right for you.

Our Kind of Folk... Now in its 30th year, the Ely Folk Festival has been a live current of music through the Fens. Better every year, the festival is set to kick off from Friday the 10th of July, jamming as much into the weekend as you could hope for. Taking place on a pitch a short drive outside of Ely, the festival takes place at an intimate and rustic venue, while offering some high quality entertainment and events. Perhaps you haven’t heard? Here are the three biggest things that will surprise you about Ely Folk Festival as it celebrates its 30th birthday.
The Thump...
Just because it’s a folk festival, doesn’t mean it doesn’t rock. There are bands lined up like Demon Barbers XL, who have been known to have break dancers sharing the stage with them, and a DJ scratching behind the bass – what they describe as celebrating ’15 years of mayhem’… A good description for a group who has been experimenting with combining folk with hip-hop influences. Other veterans who know how to bring the party include Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band, who are headlining the festival this year, capable of a rousing party as well as pulling at the heartstrings. Also, from the ‘new to you’ category are the winners of the band competition, Rusty Shackle, whose stomping single ‘The Bones’ will ratchet the energy in the room up a notch or two. They were awarded the slot for their high-octane performance style and catchy tunes, which are sure to delight.
You’ll Learn a Thing or Two... If you fancy it, that is. Perhaps you’ll be the next winner of the band competition? Hannah Sanders will be teaching a dulcimer workshop, Sound Tradition will be giving tips on harmony, and Steve Hicks has a thing or two to teach about playing the guitar. Add to that the harmonica workshop being put on by Blackjack Blues and the song writing tutorial from Gog Magog Hillbillies, and you’ve got enough music tuition to form your own band. The workshops are designed to give an up-close experience to festival goers, so you can get up close and personal with the groups you’ve enjoyed seeing on stage.
The Kids Might Party Harder Than You... Decorating a van Woodstock style with Jan, practicing Yoga alongside Sarah Moss, and jamming with instruments they made themselves, the kids have a weekend that is planned to be at least as full as Mum and Dad’s. There is even a family concert being put on by Megson, aimed at entertaining audiences of all ages. The kids might even be motivated to delve into their own artistic endeavours after experiencing so much, which they can get into with Les Barker organizing a poetry session, or perhaps they will turn their hand at the craft area. So what are you waiting for? Tickets are available at www.elyfolkfestival.co.uk, and you can purchase a pass for the entire weekend, or just a day if you prefer (tickets range from £22 for Friday up to £77 for the entire weekend). Otherwise the only surprise you’ll get is the fact that everyone else is talking about it. Adam Faber

Mayor of Ely.... ......The Sequel! I am so delighted to have been re-elected to serve the people of Ely as Mayor for another term. It is a real privilege and honour to be able to take forward the plans of this last year for another year.
commitment. I will also be delighted to be the guest speaker at the Ely College Awards event this month. Another highlight was meeting the service men and women and veterans at the Cambridgeshire Regiment Annual Parade and Service at the Cathedral.
As a Council we are now reviewing new priorities for incorporation in the Business Plan whilst ensuring that we continue to improve our existing services.
Usually only serving one year, the result of the democratic election system in May resulted in the Mayor for 201516 requiring to be elected by the new serving councillors and I was honoured to accept. Sadly, we lost some valuable members of the City Council and I would like to thank them for their service over the years. However, we have gained new members who are just as determined to serve the people of Ely well.
Duties early on in this term have been very educationfocussed as I attended both the Open University Awards Ceremony and the Class of 2015 Alconbury Graduation at the Cathedral. In real contrast to each other, It was so rewarding to witness the sheer delight of people of all ages reach another educational goal in their lives through total effort and

Rocking Ukulele Just over six months ago, veteran musician & club leader John Bassett formed the new Ely Ukulele Club which now boasts over 60 members and the number is still rising. Due to the overwhelming response for this local music club and its light-hearted performance, ‘The Rocking Ukuleles of Ely’ have recently had to refuse some bookings due to the amount of future events already committed. John Bassett comments; “The demand for performances for the Rocking Ukuleles of Ely has been phenomenal from the start, we have so many charitable bookings ahead including July’s Aquafest, Village Summer Fetes and the famous BBC’s national charity, Children In Need in November. The Rocking Ukuleles of Ely always welcome new recruits of all abilities and ages. The club’s current age range scans a whopping 16yrs to 83yrs. Gone are the days of the famous George Formby songs, now it’s a rocking/pop collection including songs from The Beatles, Abba and Elvis!”

An Appeal from The Lions Club of Littleport
Over 7000 people have died, over 100,000 people are homeless and over 10,000 are recovering from injury. In Katmandu funeral pyres burn night and day. The survivors are dazed with shock. They spent their entire lives building their homes, and working to maintain and supporting their families. Now many have lost both. Their life’s work has been taken from them by a moment of natures anger. Now their first struggle is simply to survive. Lions Clubs International Foundation immediately sent $100,000 for emergency relief. Donations have come from Lions clubs all over the world, some have sent basic necessities and some have pledged money. Lions have sent water purification tablets which are each capable of purifying 10 litres of water and Life saver filtration units that enable users to process 15,000 litres of clean sterile drinking water, and used existing funds to immediately send 56 cartons of purifying tablets capable of purifying 9 million litres of water and 280 lifesaver water filtration units capable of treating 4.2 litres of contaminated water. This appeal is needed to build funds to purchase additional supplies and to restore our funds for future emergencies. Every penny you donate will go towards helping us help others less fortunate and to provide vital assistance where it is needed. Our motto is “We Serve” Help Local Lions - Help Local People. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ely, Littleport and the surrounding areas and
Tim is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A RUBBISH LOAD OF (TOP 10) TIPS When you think about it, us Humans really do waste so much ‘stuff’. And as for buying stuff we don’t need, it really beggars belief. The amount of packaging that wraps our freshly processed, imported seasonal food for example…..! So, this month’s top ten tips are regarding our waste and re-cycling… Feel free to contact me to discuss more. Kevin 07737 457 208 Reduce: Just use less. Pop into the shed or garage now and have a look at all the things you bought but don’t need or use…. Return: Producers should take back what they sell. I unpack waste when at the shop and leave it there. I want the food, not cardboard and plastic wrappings. It’s dinner, not Christmas!!! Reuse: Pots, jars, some cans…. Can all be re-used for storage and other purpose….. We re-use jam jars with tea-light candles in the garden. Repair: Fix and mend things rather than replacing them. Plus we are losing basic skills due to the disposable culture we live in….. Refill: In Ontario Canada, 88% of beer bottles
are returned to the beer store, washed and refilled; just south of the border in the USA, the number drops to under 5%. This is just one example where law makers can make a difference…. Rot: Compost what is left over, turning it into valuable nutrients. Even the smallest of gardens have room for a compost bin / pile. Refuse: To accept the amount of packaging anymore. If every person said no at the check-out for one day, the message would get back to the manufactures in an instant…. Read: Up on what you can and can’t recycle and what to do with the big bulky items etc on the East Cambs web site. It’s very in-depth and has a comprehensive calendar of collection days for your road. Re-Educate: Those who seem to have forgotten what litter bins are for. Personally, if I see someone dropping litter, I pick it up, tap them on their shoulder and say ‘Excuse me, you have just dropped this’ and hand it back with a smile. Report: To the Local Authority (number on website) if you see fly-tipping or grot spots….

Los Gitanos! Father and son Graham and Matthew Austin are Los Gitanos and their many TV and radio appearances have been swelled by concerts in Ely Cathedral as well as a private party hosted by Professor Stephen Hawking. For 30 years they’ve been honing their skills and are currently enjoying the release of their fifth album. There’s a third generation as well – Graham’s grandsons - James and Josh and in, UK terms, that makes them something of a phenomenon. In the homelands of flamenco, Andalusia and the Camargue, three generations and more have seen the tradition passed from finger to finger with the dexterity of lightning but nowhere else, this far north of the Mediterranean, is there a family to match. Their fifth album is aptly named “Inspiration’ The first track, Vivaz offers a lively opening redolent of the heels and taps of flamenco, leading into Reverie, a tone poem for blue skies and wild horses; Summer Breeze is an idyll, each note chosen with care, Fiesta is a holiday romance with an invitation to love.
‘As the grandchildren grow up and find their own way so we’re realising that we’ve done as much as we can to keep alive a unique sound,’ says Graham. ‘It’s been an exciting journey and the music of course will live forever, as will the openness and welcome of the Camargue itself.’ Los Gitanos’ Inspiration CD is available from Burrows Bookshop, High Street Passage, Ely. Nearly 9 million people in the UK are struggling with debt....are you one of them? If so, help is at hand. There are some things we never talk about. Many people struggle when it comes to discussing money; and in the wider community, there are few things causing a bigger ripple under the carpet than debt. It’s the elephant in the room, the ghost in the cash machine, the wolf at the door. Debt is (also) a stealthy enemy. We can usually tell if a major purchase is affordable or not, but, multiple smaller purchases fuelled by the easy availability of debit and credit cards give us the opportunity for the habitual spending that pushes so many into a spiral of debt and despair. Statistics tell us that the average household in the UK is carrying around £10,000 of unsecured debt. The burden of having little or no prospect of being able to repay, reduces self-esteem,

Coming up…Ely & The Performing Arts A selection of what’s going on in the area by Matt Harvey, Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre Summer sees two local theatre productions hit the stage – Shakespeare’s most magical play ‘The Tempest’ and a classic 60’s musical comedy reimagined for modern audiences, ‘Half a Sixpence’. In July, City of Ely Amateur Dramatic Society present William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ at Ely College, Downham Road from Wed 22nd to Sat 25th July. Undoubtedly one of Shakespeare’s most mystical and magical plays; the story is set on an enchanted island where a marooned old magician seeks retribution against his wicked brother. Brought to life with a cast of twenty performers, the play is a spellbinding mix of comedy, romance and drama. Performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8/£8.50 and can be brought from their website - www.elyamateurdramatics.org - or through the box office Burrows Bookshop, High Street Passage, Ely 01353 669759. Fancy a musical comedy? Viva group presents ‘Half A Sixpence’ – originally a 1960’s musical but re-imagined for today’s audience. The show is about two friends - Kipps and Ann – who before being parted as children cut a sixpence in half and keep one half each. Years later they meet again and re-kindle their childhood friendship. But then everything changes. You’ll have to go and see the show to find out what! Performances are from Wed 29th - Friday 31st July at The Brook, Soham. Visit their website to buy tickets: www.viva-group.org.uk/book-tickets

Read this and other glowing testimonials on Denver’s website: www.aspectcuisine.com “Denver Lloyd provided the catering for our house party in March 2013. He was absolutely fantastic and made the evening so relaxed and enjoyable as he had done all the hard work! Denver was very helpful in helping us choose which of the delicious sounding canapés to serve, and came over to discuss menus and arrangements on the day. Denver also advised us on quantities and explained how they would be served. On the day, he arrived an hour before the party started with an array of beautifully presented platters of food. His attention to detail was amazing, even providing pretty labels for the various dishes. All of the food was absolutely delicious and our guests all commented on how fantastic it was. One guest was so impressed that she booked Denver to provide the catering for her party a few weeks later! The level of service and the food which Denver provided was outstanding. We will certainly book him again for our next party! ”

SWING ALONG WITH MONKEY MUSIC! Monkey Music, the award winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months - 4 yrs across the UK, runs Weekly Classes, Parties and Holiday Workshops in Ely, Histon and Cambridge. Littleport classes are coming soon. Founded in Dulwich South East London in 1993, Monkey Music nurtures a child’s natural love of music so it will last a lifetime. Based on an exciting and progressive curriculum, Monkey Music provides weekly music classes that are entertaining, educational and are imaginatively taught by specialist teachers who gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Classes are small and tailor-made, and the teachers make full use of the lively 30 minute classes to captivate the children using a winning combination of catchy music, percussion instruments, visual props and boundless energy with lots of opportunities for the children to experiment with the instruments and make music of their own. Over 300 traditional and original songs, musical games and exciting movement ideas are used throughout the curriculum, with the children grouped in classes according to their age. Unique to Monkey Music is their newest curriculum which has been specially written for babies from 3 months in response to huge demand from parents, who are increasingly aware of the importance of introducing their children to music from as young an age as possible. Called “Rock’n’Roll”, each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time in the week for parents and carers to enjoy the sensory experience of sound together with their baby.

This July, 323 Cambridge Open Studio artists will be taking part in 219 different locations. There will be a wide range of artistic media to see, including painters, sculptors, jewellers, photographers, illustrators, furniture makers and many more. 112 new artists have joined for 2015, promising an even greater variety of art and events for the public to enjoy. Over the weekends of July 4/5, 11/12, 18/19, 25/26, artists will open their doors free of charge, welcoming the public to view their work, learn how it’s created and even in some cases, try your hand. Covering the whole county, the Open Studios initiative includes many outlying towns and villages as well as Cambridge city itself. COS aims to bring artists together with the public, making studios and workshops accessible at certain times of the year. Working to demystify art and spread the word about the enormous amount of talent we have living and working in our county today, the annual summer Open Studios initiative sees hundreds of artists opening their workshops and studios to the public to share their craft. The organisation promotes the making of original works of art and craft, and works to forge a lasting relationship between local people and local makers. Participating studios will be open from 11am – 6pm though it is worth pointing out not all studios are open on all of the weekends, so do check the website www.camopenstudios.co.uk for opening dates or refer to the free Guide Book which lists all artists and groups participating. It really is a wonderful day out. Pick up your Guide Book, plan yourself a route and why not take in a pub lunch along the way. And remember to look out for the synonymous yellow flags that will be flying outside the ‘open’ studios. Entry: FREE To find out more visit www.camopenstudios.co.uk

NATIONAL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WEEK 20th-28th June
Neighbourhood Watch is, once again, thriving in East Cambs. Membership has increased by 50% in the last seven years and in Ely there are 33 active Neighbourhood Watch groups. However that still leaves room for more. Neighbourhood Watch was established to work with the local police force to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and also the fear of it. This support to the police force is as important now as it ever was. In addition to supporting the police, Neighbourhood Watch is there to encourage neighbourliness and improve the quality of life for local residents and tenants. Many residents, particularly the elderly or those living alone can benefit from the appointed Neighbourhood watch co-ordinator in their area. Might you be such a person? Another benefit of the scheme is that many home insurance companies give a reduction on insurance premiums for residents in a Neighbourhood Watch area. Such reductions are always welcome, but it also serves as a strong endorsement of the benefit of Neighbourhood Watch – large insurance companies are not renowned for giving something for nothing, so they obviously see the benefit. If you want to keep your neighbourhood safe, or improve safety and security in your neighbourhood, find out how Neighbourhood Watch can help. Phone Kevin Evans on 01353 614892.

50 divided into six groups, who read each week in rotation. The news is supplied on memory sticks and a digital player is provided free of charge. The service is supported by donations and grants.
Fenprobe Talking News was the brainchild of Tony May, who became blind in his early thirties. Coming into contact with other blind and partially sighted people during rehabilitation, he realised how easy it was to become isolated from the local community. He envisaged a completely free audio service to the blind and partially sighted of East Cambridgeshire, with the local news recorded and played on the newly popular cassette players. After successful fundraising activity, the first recording went out at Christmas 1978 to around twenty people in the district. Thirty seven years later, Fenprobe TN still brings the local news from the Ely Standard and Ely News in an audio version to around seventy listeners. There are over forty volunteers,
Anyone who cannot read normal print comfortably is eligible to join. Listeners have often referred to the service gratefully as a life line. We are particularly interested in volunteers to train as sound recording technicians as well as readers. For more information about volunteering or becoming a listener, please contact the secretary on 01353 861153 or apply via our website: fenprobe.exintra.net
