Welcome to the biggest issue of The Elyi yet! We do hope you like it. Madeleine and I have been working to get as many people involved as humanly possible (or ‘humanely’ even). With every magazine, more and more local businesses are supporting, enabling us to offer more and more free space to clubs and groups. We are particularly pleased to feature Magpas Helimedix, a very worthwhile local organization providing support to the emergency services. (See page 26) Thank you to Ely residents who have been sending in info and also special thanks to Matt and Adam, our shiney, new volunteer contributors who are going to bring us features and news of events in the area over the coming months. For most of June and July the Isle of Ely becomes a hotbed of art and performance with entertainment for all ages. See Matt’s article on page 34. We’ll bring you more on that in the next issue. We would also like to thank Councillor Lis Every for a very successful year in office as Mayor of Ely, promoting Ely and heading up some exciting city centre developments.
Please see our website for further details: www.elyimagazine.com

Councillor Elisabeth Every, Mayor of Ely As I reach the end of my term, I am now constantly asked what I have enjoyed most about the year. It has been such a rewarding and fulfilling year with so many wonderful and diverse experiences it is just impossible to say. I will have completed nearly 300 engagements as well as chairing the City Council. What I can say is that I have enjoyed every single activity. There are so many amazing people supporting so many charities and community activities. Chairing the Council has been particularly rewarding as we have, with prudent budgeting and financial controls, in addition to providing our usual services, acquired the Sessions House, saving one of our most
prestigious Ely buildings. It now houses the City of Ely Council offices and the Court Room is preserved. We took over The Maltings which is now emerging as our Village Hall, providing a wonderful setting for commercial and community events Our City Centre Forum partnership thrives in our efforts to ensure we have a vibrant and lively City Centre. Progress is also well underway to develop strong business and school links to encourage employability skills and greater opportunities for our young people to work locally. We will reinstate our own version of the Neighbourhood Panel and will have a new interactive website in May. But it’s the people I have
met and the events I have attended that I will always remember. I only hope they have also benefited from the support the role of Mayor can give. I know that wherever I have been or whatever I have done, the people I have been with are much more important than I am. I am so grateful to the people of Ely for bestowing on me the privilege to act as their Mayor. It is an experience I will never forget.

Craft & Food Fair Sat 30th May Palace Green, Ely 10am – 5pm 40 Stalls, Traditional Games, Raffle, Champagne and Pimms, Afternoon Teas in aid of Ely Cathedral Choir Tour Fund
T
he annual Etheldreda Craft and Food Fair takes place on Saturday 30th May on Palace Green, surrounded by the splendour of Ely Cathedral and The Old Palace - two of Ely’s magnificent historic buildings.
A
n entertaining day for the whole family, the fair includes a selection of over 40 tempting stalls featuring crafts, local foods, jewellery, plants, gifts and summer produce.
I
n keeping with the tradition of this well established country fair, visitors will have the opportunity to try their luck on the tombola and test their aim on the coconut shy as well as enjoying a Pimm’s with strawberries & cream on the lawns in front of the Cathedral. This, along with bacon rolls, afternoon tea, delicious cakes and champagne, all add to a great day out in Ely.
A
ll profits go to the Ely Cathedral Choir Tour Fund. Originally, the Etheldreda Fair was started in the early 1990’s by the Director of Music at Ely Cathedral and his wife when they opened their home and garden for refreshments and light lunches on the Open University Degree Ceremony Day. The OU has for many years held it’s East Anglian Degree Ceremony at Ely Cathedral in late May or early June and they saw it as an opportunity to raise much needed funds for the Ely Cathedral Choir Tour Fund.
I
t was named ‘The Etheldreda Fair’ as St. Etheldreda, the founding Abbess of the first Abbey in Ely, is celebrated annually on June 18th.
B
y the late 1990’s the organisation of the fair was taken on by the boy chorister parents who broadened it to the full scale fair, on Palace Green, in front of Ely Cathedral. All welcome!

Ely Youth Choir Ely Youth Choir is a branch of Ely Choral Society. They run it as community based group open to all young people which at present is free to join and attend every week! (Not many things you can say that of!). Singing in a group is a great way to boost your confidence as a singer and improve actual singing technique. They perform whenever and wherever they can and as recently as the end of last year travelled down to London to sing at the Royal Albert Hall with other young choirs from around the country. They are a lovely bunch and very enthusiastic! Andrew Parnell is choirmaster and he just has the most wonderful way of teaching, encouraging and getting the most from them.
Chair of Ely Youth Choir‘s steering group is Lis Every, Ely’s Mayor 2014-15 and a keen choral singer herself. She said, “It’s great to see these fantastic young people singing together and performing to a high standard, getting involved in the community, having lots of fun and making new friends. Ely Choral Society really believes in supporting the next generation of choral singers this way. It’s free and anyone can join.” New members - boys and girls - are always welcome. The age range is 11-18. There are no auditions. Rehearsals are in Ely every Monday in term time. For more information visit: www.elychoralsociety.org email: youth@elychoralsociety.org or call Mrs. Sylvia Bulley on 01353 774733.

SMART DRIVING IN ANY CAR Energy saving tips from Kevin at the Solar Shed Slow down Your fuel costs will increase the faster you drive so keep speeds reasonable.
Saving energy is not just about what goes on inside the house and around the garden, how about getting as much as an extra 15% MPG sound? Try these energy saving tips for motoring and see how you get on.... Switch off your engine Many newer cars automatically turn off when stationary in neutral. If yours doesn’t, turn off your engine when you’ve stopped for a minute or so to save fuel. Higher gear Driving at lower revs reduces fuel consumption so change up a gear at around 2,000 RPM. Drive smoothly Assess the road ahead as much as possible to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration, which increases the amount of fuel you use.
Windows vs air conditioning If you are travelling at low speed opening the windows is more efficient. If travelling at 60 miles per hour or above, closing the windows and using the air con will save you more. Tyre pressures Under-inflated tyres increase your fuel consumption and can be dangerous on the road so check them once a month and before long journeys. Roof racks/boxes Having these attached to your car when they’re not being used will increase drag and increase your fuel costs. Lighten your load Remove excess items from your car before travelling to reduce weight.

Peter’s Bridal Warehouse Peter’s Bridal Warehouse is a wedding wonderland owned and managed by Peter Bullman formerly of Heart Brides. Peter’s idea was to open up a wedding dress outlet, allowing brides with a range of budgets to be able to purchase their dream wedding dress. His factory outlet now attracts brides-to-be not just from Soham, but all over Cambridgeshire and indeed the UK.
1) Pay for the dress in full with cash or card and take it away with you. 2) Reserve your dress with a £100 deposit and then spread the cost with up to 6 monthly instalments. Peter is very happy to arrange alterations, if need be, to make your dress the perfect fit. Nobody likes to use the term “budget bride” but, let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to save money?
The dresses are purchased direct from the manufacturer and priced between £299 and £899, saving you hundreds of pounds on highstreet prices. Why pay more?
At Peter’s Bridal Warehouse, the staff understand how vital it is to keep down the costs without compromising on quality. Their main aim is to offer brides the most beautiful designer quality gowns but without the designer price tag.
Peter stocks dresses from size 8 to 36, specialising in wedding dress styles that really make the most of those gorgeous curves. During a visit to Peter’s Soham outlet, you are welcome to try on as many dresses as you wish and when you have selected the dress of your dreams, you have 2 simple payment options;
Peter says, “With new stock arriving each week, we are sure you will find your dream wedding dress for a price you can afford!” If you have any questions, or wish to book an appointment please call 07917 757 862

MAGPAS HELIMEDIX
Recently, Adam Faber visited the Magpas Helimedix Airbase in Cambridgeshire to meet the boys and girls in orange.
D
an Read was in a roomful of fundraisers, everyday people who helped gather the money to keep fuel in the helicopter that helps him save lives. He opened his mouth to thank them for their support, and the difference their effort makes – when a siren went off, meaning he had to take to the skies once more.
E
veryone was ushered aside as the team hurried to the launch pad, and took off across the horizon. The group who were about to hear his presentation were baffled, to say the least. They stood together next to the air strip, their keynote speaker having disappeared in a bit of a whirlwind. Charlie, a young child who had raised £40 for the charity waved goodbye to the helicopter with his dad and grandma.
26
work at RAF Wyton, where he keeps constantly vigilant for when he might be needed. With a helicopter at the ready as well as two rapid response BMWs (sponsored by Elms Cambridge BMW), the team supports emergency services by bringing specially trained paramedics and pre-hospital doctors to the scene – wherever that scene may be. By quickly ‘taking the hospital to the patient’ in this way, survival rates and recovery times are improved. However, it is a day peppered with bursts of activity. Dan needs to be ready to roll out at a moment’s notice. “It’s impossible to know when a call might come in, so you just have to be ready,” said Dan after he had come back from his latest emergency. We were sitting down to a quick lunch, with the knowledge that if the sirens went off again he’d be off in a flash once more. “In a busy day I could be called out up to five times, said Dan. “It all depends on when and where we are most needed.”
B
D
an’s life seems to be one full of interruptions. He’s a highly trained paramedic for Magpas Helimedix, a specialist medical team who respond to life-threatening illness and major trauma cases across the East of England. He comes from his home in Ely to
y working together with the ambulance service, Magpas paramedics and doctors are dispatched to the emergencies where their specialized training can have the most impact. The Magpas team are trained to provide services that would normally be available only at the hospital. In a situation where a few minutes can mean a world of difference, this helps save lives, speed recovery times, and ultimately reduce the permanent damage done. “It would be great to have someone this highly trained in every ambulance in England, but that would take quite a lot of resources.” said Dan. Right now the resources they do have are purely down to public donations.”
27
E
very little bit helps, be it £5 to stock the quick-deploy emergency medication kit strapped to Dan’s ankle, or the £600 to fuel the helicopter. Current supporters do whatever it is they can to help; hosting a wine tasting, doing a sponsored bike ride, or even just a little boy taking a donation tin into Dad’s work.
Make it ORANGE for Magpas Helimedix on 15th May 2015
W
hat might happen in the event of an emergency is usually the last thing on anyone’s mind, for the Magpas team it’s an everyday reality. Besides the fact that it’s Dan’s job, the service strikes a personal chord with him; Dan’s brother was in a motorcycle accident that needed an air ambulance, and it drives home for him the importance of having constant coverage. Dan said, “At the moment we have a Magpas Helimedix Team on during the day and at night we plan to go 24/7 by the end of 2015. We can only do this thanks to the generous support from the public.”
F
or his part, Dan is providing all the coverage he can – recently he even provided lifesaving care during a family holiday. The rest, keeping the equipment running and the emergency kits stocked, is up to us.

Six year-old Xander presents a cheque for £775 to MAGPAS At an Ely Hereward Rotary Club meeting in March, six year-old Xander Brown, accompanied by his mum Michelle, presented a cheque for £775 to Emma Sanders of MAGPAS, after which Emma gave an illustrated talk on the charity’s history and current operations. The money presented was raised at the club’s Ouse Washes Experience event, at which Xander was a major fundraiser through sponsorship, and by far the youngest entrant. At the same meeting his mum Michelle was made an Honorary Member of the club in recognition of her support at our fundraising events. Ely Wildspace
Spring is the perfect time of year to explore the wild spaces around Roswell pits, Ely Common and Lovers Lane. The whole area is rich in wildlife and local history, with lots of delightful places for children to explore. Last year Elywildspace launched the “memories of Ely pits and meadows” website and podcast at www.elypits.com . Local people generously shared their stories and photographs of the area, including memories of childhood, clay extraction, farming, floods, wildlife and much more.

We have been fascinated by these stories, and hope the user-friendly website will be visited by both local people and tourists. The podcast, available to download at www.elypits.com, was made to accompany a walk around the pits and meadows. It is a great way to learn about local wildlife and how the area was shaped by clay extraction and farming. The walk takes less than an hour, with free illustrated maps available from Ely library, museum and tourist office.
