Welcome to the September / October issue of the Elyi Magazine. It has been a busy and entertaining 6 weeks gathering information for this issue. In July Madeleine Funnell joined the Elyi Team to look after our advertisers. Welcome! By the way, we have been thrilled with the response and you will see inside that a good number of local businesses and services have got involved. Thank you very much to them for supporting the magazine. We couldn’t do it without them and hope you will be inspired to reward them with some custom and enjoy reading about their services. We are also joined by Kevin Holland who is going to give us regular tips on how to save energy over the year. We love to hear what local groups and societies are up to so do send in articles and info for events you are putting on. The Autumn is a great time in Ely with the excitement of the Apple Fair in October and, of course the fireworks after that. Also, as we approach Remembrance Day there are several notable commemorative events for WW1. Please see page 26 for the Ely Society’s appeal for photos for the Cathedral Exhibition. More on that in the next issue. Finally, Thank you to the ditribution team for delivering the magazine. Hopefully the weather has been kind and this issue arrives in a dry condition through your letterbox!

ould you like to make new friends and develop a new social life, whilst helping your local community? If so, you might like to consider joining our club – you may have seen us in action at Aquafest, or collecting for charity in and around Ely.
T
he club was formed in 2004, by a small group of people who were looking at ways of putting something back into the local community and at the same time having fun and enjoying the company of like minded people. Our club welcomes men and women from all backgrounds for a wide variety of social activities, and is currently 50/50 male/ female.
R
otary’s prime objective is to foster friendship among its members and to raise funds to help those less fortunate, and as a member you can enjoy a rich social life, meet new people and make lasting friendships, whilst helping others not as fortunate as yourself.
S
ince 2004 our club has raised over £50,000 for charities and good causes. We are relaxed and informal, and meet every Wednesday evening at the Lamb Hotel, for a one-course meal and good company. The meetings are a mix of fellowship, guest speakers, event and fundraising planning, and outside visits. F
or over 25 years The Almonry restaurant has been serving delicious, locally sourced, home cooked food to Ely folk and the thousands of visitors who flock to our city every year. Better known for its appetising lunches and delectable afternoon
cream teas in the gardens overlooking the Cathedral, the restaurant is now welcoming evening diners by opening every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. This is something Mick and Lesley Blakey, managers of this Cathedral owned establishment, have been wanting to do for sometime and have finally succumbed to the pressure from their loyal customers and Ely visitors.
F
or those of you who have not yet discovered this jewel in the centre of Ely, The Almonry is located within the Cathedral grounds, at the end of the high street and just a short walk from the market square through the gate marking the old medieval precinct. The main restaurant is situated in a 13th century vaulted undercroft which offers a truly unique dining venue for up to 80 diners. The Garden Room on the ground floor has large glass doors opening out onto the patio and is an ideal spot to enjoy the wide selection of homemade cakes and scones with your morning coffee or afternoon tea. If you are looking for a more intimate space the elegant Blue Room, overlooking the Almonry garden, is an ideal area for private dining and meetings.
T
he beautifully maintained gardens are the Almonry’s crowning glory and provide the perfect location to eat and drink ‘al fresco’ with a direct view of the Cathedral’s majestic east end.
T
he new evening menu offers delicious English Bistro style food with a twist. Apple Festival 2014 Ely is holding its annual Apple Festival in celebration of the great British Apple. (18th October 10-4pm ) The original idea of an Apple Celebration in Ely was the brainchild of Watergull Orchards, apple producers and previous traders at Ely’s Farmers Market. They attended many other Apple Festivals in the region and thought it would be an excellent idea to do one in Ely. Our event has now developed into one of the best festivals in the area. The event provides interest and intrigue for all sorts of people whether you are interested in the educational, environment or simply the fun angle of the day. Our experts from East of England Apples and Orchard Project will once again be in attendance to identity any apples that you care to bring along. Apparently, it is easier to identify if you can bring a long part of the stalk and/or leaf as well as the actual apple so if you have been mystified as to what kind of apples were growing in your garden all these years, bring a sample along.
An exciting new evening menu and extensive drinks list is available to view online. www.elycathedral.org/almonry
There will be several competitions, storytelling and activities running throughout the day including the ever-popular longest apple peeling competition, apple and spoon races, and an apple shy. Apple delights can be tasted at the Watergull Orchards marquee where a whole range of apples and juices are on offer. There will also be a hog roast with applesauce, pork & apple burgers and sausages. There will be woodturning demonstrations as well as the chance to see how to throw some simple apple dishes together in our cookery demonstration. Folk music and Morris dancing will be performed throughout the day to add to the ambience of this wonderful day. We hope to see you there! 8 “When customers arrive at Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe,” says owner David Learner, “they arrive smiling. The shop has become a destination all its own. When they leave, they leave with even bigger smiles.” Since opening its doors in July 2013 Mr Simms has offered a huge range of confectionery to Ely’s residents, as well as to students and visitors from every corner of the world: chocolate, fudges, nougat, a wide diabetic range, its famous Pick n Mix selection, and American candy that has brought its transatlantic customers a taste of home and happy memories. “Memories” says David. “Our biggest asset. We offer a trip back to a time when things seemed just a little easier.” Golden Nuggets, sherbet fountains, fruit salads and black jacks …. They’re all still available at Mr Simms’ High Street shop in Ely and with them come the next generation ready to say, “Come on, granny, let’s go to Mr Simms!”

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH There is a common misconception that Neighbourhood Watch was of yesteryear and is no longer relevant. This is not the case. The Home Office lists it as the largest voluntary organisation in the country with a membership that covers more than 3.7 million households in England and Wales. It is worth noting that the majority of home insurance companies give a reduction on insurance premiums for residents in a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Such reductions are always welcome, but it also serves as a strong endorsement of the benefit of Neighbourhood Watch – large insurance companies are not renowned for giving something for nothing, so they obviously see the benefit.
Neighbourhood Watch exists to work with the local police force to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, and also to encourage neighbourliness. This provides an increased feeling of security for the local residents. In Ely there over 1,000 households within Neighbourhood Watch. They are contained within 32 areas and each area is looked after by a coordinator whose role is to be a link between the neighbours and the police, and also with other authorities and other coordinators. If you are not in one of these areas, it is probably because no-one has volunteered to be the coordinator. 14 This issue we welcome Kevin Holland to the Elyi as our resident Eco Energy Advisor. To kick things off, here are his top ten tips for the months ahead... With Autumn almost upon us, now is the time to start thinking about heating first and foremost. 1) RADIATORS
Regardless of how well insulated your home is, radiators on all outside walls should have a heat reflector shield on the wall behind them. Although there are several types I reccomend Heat-Keeper which are the easiest to fit and have the best results. They form a barrier between the wall and radiator. They make sure the water in your heating systems returns to the boiler as hot as it can which in turn reduces the amount of gas or oil it takes to keep the water hot. They also have fins which send heat out into the room rather than allowing the heat from the radiator to go straight up to the ceiling first. I made about a 10% saving immediately when I installed mine at home on 13 radiators. Buy direct at: www.heatkeeper.co.uk 2) THERMOSTATIC RADIATOR VALVES
The rooms that are not used should be set to a lower temp. Why spend money on energy that you are not using? 3) RADIATOR COVERS AND SHELVES
Shelves will send heat out into the room, not up to the ceiling. We lined the inside of ours with the cheaper foam backed foil and stapled it into the wood. It cannot be seen but makes the over-size radiator cover into one big heat giver! 4) DIGITAL THERMOSTATS
The old fashioned, inefficient wheels have large differences between actual and setting. A fairly new innovation is the ingenious ‘Chop Clock’ which allows you to take 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes out of the boiler burn time without you noticing thereby reducing burn time and saving you money. www.chop-cloc.com 5) INTELLIGENT BOILER TIMING
Turning the boiler down and leaving it on longer can have benefits, but it does depend on how you live. Why would you want to heat to a house that
you are not in? Intelligent timing is the best way to save money there. 6) SERVICING
Regular servicing or replacing older boilers will save money and precious energy recourses. 7) EXTRA INSULATION
Even if your hot water cylinder is insulated, it will save more money to wrap the cheap foam backed silver foil insulation around the tank. This will push heat back into the cylinder and waste less. Heat will still escape from the top so you won’t lose the airing capability. 8) LIGHTING
Switch to LEDs. They come in 5 colour ranges so are no longer bright white. Typically you can go from 50w halogens to a 3w LED and not notice the difference. I stay away from low energy and go for LED every time. My whole house with over 20 lights is less than 100w of energy if they were all on. That’s the same as one old fashioned bathroom light! 9) HEATING SYSTEM FLUSH
Having your system flushed will clean the whole system. It costs about £300 and includes having a filter fitted. The result will be immediate. The water inside the heating system is clean. The radiators get hotter straight away and in turn you use less oil or gas to heat your home. 10) LOFT & WALL INSTALLATIONS
As long as the house and loft can still breathe get as much insulation in above ceiling as you can manage/ afford. It’s not expensive and can save a small fortune. Always seek advice on solid walls. Some houses are not built to be insulated further than they were when built. I live in one such house but have still managed to go from 3,200 litres of oil a year 10 years ago to 750 a year now-a-days.

Renewable Industry Leader & Solar Shed Owner, Kevin Holland
TURNING DAYLIGHT INTO MONEY Solar has never been better, as the World switches to renewable energy, costs have plummeted worldwide in the last 4 yrs and now, it is very rare for a domestic solar system for residential use to cost more than £7,500 for the biggest and most powerful of systems.
Size
6 Panel 1.25kwp system 8 Panel 2kwp system 12 Panel 3kwp system 16 Panel 4kwp system
Costs
£5,070 £5,500 £6,300 £7,000
Return on Investment 8% p/a + rpi 9.5% p/a + rpi 11% p/a + rpi 12.5% p/a + rpi
All RIO based upon real live data of over 2,600 fitted systems using the same products based in the East of England
With some very clever technology which automatically switches your hot water on when producing excess electricity and fantastic monitoring, the vast majority of solar owners are now receiving between 10 – 15% returns. The Money you earn from your energy company is still extremely generous and still tax free and still index linked to the RPI for 20yrs from point of installation.
Solar has never been so good! Here at The Solar Shed Ltd we have a fully
monitored solar system that has been in for over 3 yrs, so you can see exactly how much energy has been saved and money earned from this modern technology. We also have a domestic hot water solar system that has been in place for 6 years now so you can see how much oil a family of five has saved over that time. Solar really does pay for itself many times over.
The Solar Shed Ltd has designed, sold and had fitted OVER 500 solar systems over the last 7 yrs. See our website for a full detailed installation map. Also see the website for testimonies going back to 2008!
www.thesolarshed.co.uk As well as providing you with your solar system we also offer a Residential Eco audit service, group visits to the Solar Shed to see systems in action and energy worskshops for customers looking to green up their lives. All bookable on the website. Also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Could you be a Community First Responder?
F
irst of all I would like to give you an insight into what a first responder does. A responder scheme is made up of groups of volunteers who, within the community in which they live or work, have been trained to attend emergency calls by the East of England NHS Trust and provide first aid until an emergency vehicle arrives on the scene. You will not be asked to attend dangerous incidents such as road traffic collisions fights or childbirth.
E
ach member will contribute as much or as little time as they are able. The more responders there are the more cover we are able to provide for the community: hence why we are always looking for new recruits Being a First responder will not change your lifestyle, but will give you new skills and the opportunity to make a difference in your community.
A
ll new recruits undergo an intensive first aid training course which includes training in the use of a defibrillator, and administering oxygen and operational procedures to enable the Responder to competently carry out duties that will promote the well-being of the patient until an emergency vehicle arrives. Recruits are expected to attend on-going training sessions.
A
nyone interested in knowing further details about the work of Community First Responders or is interested in becoming a first responder in the are where they work or live should in the first instance phone: 0845 601 3733 and ask for an introductory pack to be sent to them. Linda Everett

Get Cosy this Autumn There are many reasons to choose a woodburning stove over an open fire. Firstly they have more than triple the efficiency, projecting the heat into the room rather than up the chimney - also much less messy and a good deal safer in a family home. Cade are fully qualified, HETAS registered, multifuel and woodburning stove fitters. They supply and install stainless steel insulated twin wall chimney systems and a wide range of granite, stone and tile hearths. They are currently offering an annual service and sweep of your existing stove from ÂŁ88 (inc vat) and for new customers are happy to do a free, no obligation site survey and advise you on your stove selection. As a family run, local business, Cade cover Ely, Cambridge and the surrounding villages with many happy customers already looking forward to the warm glow of a real fire this Autumn. Visit: www.woodburningstoveinstallation.co.uk to view testimonials and find out more.

The Kings Arms
I
n the Cambridge Chronicle of 5th September 1807 the Kings Arms, situated in St Mary’s Street, was described as a “substantial messuage with adjoining tenement, spacious yard, excellent garden well stocked, convenient outbuildings and stabling for 20 horses” and in the 1820s the carriers for London were departing from The Kings Arms 3 times a week.
D
etails of the pub’s history and dramatic past (and indeed of most of the local Ely pubs and ale houses) can be found in the Ely Society’s Book ‘Ely Inns’ which takes a comprehensive look at the history of Ely Inns and Beer Houses, illustrated by fascinating old photos. (available from Burrows and other good book shops!) Published originally in1984 and then revised in 2007, it tells the history of the thriving local ale industry including stories of witchcraft, disorder and dodgey dealing - amongst other things!
I
f you visit The Kings Arms today you can expect a warm, traditional welcome. The present ‘house’ ale is Woodfordes Wherry with a continually rotating choice of other beers such as Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Cameron’s Strongarm.
The Kings Arms also offers the full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks you would expect. Meals are served 12-3pm and 6.30-9pm Monday to Friday and 123pm on Saturday and Sunday.

orfball is a team sport which men and women play together. A team is made up of 4 male and 4 female players. It’s a bit like netball or basketball, although everyone gets to shoot and everyone gets to defend, but it’s noncontact and dribbling is not allowed. So you have to pass and move into space to get away from your defender, making it a fast-paced and tactical game.

Ely Decorative & Fine Arts Society
Â
E
ly Decorative and Fine Arts Society is a member society of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies. We meet at the Old Palace, Palace Green, Ely on the third Thursday evening of each month except July, August and December, starting at 7.30pm. Our programme covers a variety of interesting illustrated talks by experts on subjects which we feel will appeal to a wide range of ages and include paintings, jewellery, architecture, textiles, literature, ceramics and furniture. Following the talks there is an opportunity
to chat with other members over coffee and biscuits, usually finishing about 9pm. Our Special Interest Days offer the opportunity to delve more deeply into a subject , and include a buffet lunch. Day trips are usually arranged twice year, either to a London art oriented exhibition or a place of special interest with a link to one of the arts. We are a friendly group and try to offer an insight into all aspects of art through our lectures. For more information please visit our website : www.elydfas.org.uk

We are now assembling a collection of images and objects relating to home life during WW1 for an exhibition in Ely Cathedral from 7 to 11 November 2014. We would be most grateful if
local residents or businesses would lend us copies of photos, adverts or other information about life in the Ely area during the Great War. All items will be carefully looked after and returned.
