Doc Gets Hammered October 10, 1880

Within weeks of arriving in Tombstone, Doc Holliday gets in a shooting scrape at the Oriental saloon. Johnny Tyler, the very same gambler who Wyatt Earp eighty-sixed in August, has hot words with Doc. Flashing his infamous temper, Holliday challenges, goads and taunts Tyler to pull his shooter. Showing rare good sense, Tyler declines to fight a man who wants to die. Shamed, the tinhorn leaves camp, Milt Joyce, the owner of the Oriental, takes Holliday to task for his wanton blood lust. As Joyce continues to rail against Doc (the dentist gave up his pistol to Joyce, which is now safely deposited behind the bar), the good doctor gets madder and madder. Finally, Holliday can take no more abuse and he bolts out the front door, obtains another pistol and returns.

Bucking the Tiger After the Oriental’s grand opening on July 21, 1880, Johnny Tyler and his gambling pals kept the place in a constant uproar—starting fights, rattling faro dealers and scaring away more genteel gamblers. Wyatt (standing) is given interest in the Oriental in exchange for protecting faro players, including Doc (at far right), from Tyler and other thugs. 20

JANUARY 2019

Milton E. Joyce, 33, does not own the Oriental Saloon building, but he leases space in it from Jim Vizina.

The Joyce Shooting As Holliday comes through the door of the Oriental (below) and advances on Joyce, he reportedly utters a “remark that wouldn’t look well in print.” Evidently, Holliday is relatively unknown in the new mining camp, as the Epitaph describes him in the altercation as a “man named Doc Holliday.” Overpowered and pummeled, Doc is pistol whipped so badly, several think he is dying, or dead (inset).

Toe Jamming, Hand Popping & Head Banging at the Oriental Under the heading “Leaden Music,” the October 12, 1880, issue of The Tombstone Epitaph gives these details of the fight: “Holliday [who left the saloon to procure another pistol], shortly afterward, returned, and as Joyce was coming out from behind the bar, opened fire on him with a self cocker, firing two shots in quick succession. The first shot struck Joyce in the pistol hand, disabling it, the second missed him and passing through the bar, struck Parker on the foot. “Joyce kept advancing all the time, and, it is said, fired one shot. Closing with Holliday, he struck him on the head with his six-shooter and finally threw him on the floor. “While the men were struggling, officer Bennett appeared upon the scene and separated the combatants, taking Joyce out of the saloon.

“Holliday (left) was picked up and placed in a chair, it being generally thought, from his bloody appearance, that he was severely, if not fatally, hurt. Such, however, proved not to be the case, and he was arrested by Deputy Marshal Earp.” —The Tombstone Epitaph

Congress clarifies that horses are not pets advances landmark livestock health measures

As the countdown to close the 115th Congress heads to the final stretch, on Wednesday, December 12, Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (H.R. 2), sending the legislation to the president, who is expected to sign the bill into law this week.

Horse industry highlights include a revised statutory definition that excludes equines from a blanket definition of “pets” and funding for key livestock and international market development programs through Fiscal Year (FY) 2023. In the wake of extensive horse industry outreach, lawmakers struck language in the senate version that defined horses as “pets” within the context of a “Pet and Women Safety” (PAWS) measure. Industry requested that lawmakers delete “horses” from the proposed statutory definition of “pets,” but retain “horses” as a standalone category. In response to industry messages communicated to congressional leaders during the past six months, the final conference report states that the bill “clarifies the definition of pet to include certain companion animals, while also providing protections for other animals such as horses, service animals, and emotional support animals.” The revised definition helps preserve the long-standing classification of horses as “livestock,” while allowing equines to fall within the scope of property damage subject to compensation within the parameters of the PAWS Act.

A preliminary review of the legislation shows that lawmakers are moving in the right direction with respect to funding important animal health programs. Unlike earlier versions of the bill, the legislation mandates rather than authorizes minimum appropriations totaling $150 million to fund the National Animal Vaccine Bank (NAVVCB), the National Animal Disaster Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP) and National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), among other programs, for FY 2019 to 2023. Of the $150 million of mandated funding, the bill stipulates that Congress will appropriate $112 million “to be allocated among the NAHLN, the NADPRP and the NAVVCB.” With respect to the NAHLN, a major priority for the horse industry, the legislation further authorizes up to $30 million per year over the five-year span of the farm bill, matching industry’s authorization request. Additionally, the legislation provides “$255 million in annual mandatory funding” for Foreign Market Development, the Market Access Program, and other programs that support the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider

Craig Schmersal

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) sends congratulations to its newest NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider: Craig Schmersal. Schmersal qualified three horses for the NRHA Open Futurity Finals this past weekend –Ladysdreamofblueeyes, The Star Jersey, and Pale Quistador – to reach the next level in his career. On Ladysdreamofblueeyes, owned by Tim J. Anderson, Schmersal placed fourth in the level (L) 4 open division. He also rode Anderson’s The Star Jersey and Pale Quistador, owned by B S Syndicate, winning nearly $80,000 in all. Schmersal, an NRHA Professional and Judge, has competed in NRHA events since 1988. The Scottsdale, Arizona resident has moved through the NRHA ranks over the years, starting with his first show as a youth in Pennsylvania. Crey Zee, ridden by Tatum Rice

222 Wins NCHA Open Futurity Finals

BADBOONARISING, ridden by Adan Banuelos

by Sally Harrison Even with a score of 222 points, as first to work in the 21-horse NCHA Open Futurity Finals, Crey Zee and Tatum Rice were plenty vulnerable. Last year’s winning score was 228 points, marked by Austin Shepard and Dual Reyish. And the last time a score of 222 won the event was in 2008, when Metallic Cat and Beau Galyean claimed the championship. Both Shepard and Galyean, as well as three other past NCHA Futurity champions were in Sunday’s Finals, as well. But Crey Zee and Rice proved unbeatable on Sunday. Badboonarising and Adan Banuelos came closest with 221 points, while CR Tuff Taboo, ridden by Tatum’s father, Boyd Rice, scored 218.5 to tie SF Hottish Lumi Cat and Foster Johnson with the third highest score. Crey Zee, a Dual Rey daughter bred and owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight, Weatherford, Tex., is the first foal out of Eazee E ($211,145), who Tatum Rice showed as 2017 NCHA Open Reserve World Champion. Kylie Rice, Tatum’s wife, and Kevin and Sydney’s daughter, also showed Eazee E as reserve champion of the 2015 West Texas Classic Non-Pro. Eazee E is out of Zee Dually ($201,899), a leading producer of earners of $1.8 million, including Smooth As A Zee ($616,978). On Friday night, Blakley Colgrove placed third in the NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Finals riding Smooth Magick, a full sister to Smooth As A Zee, and three-quarter sister to Eazee E.

$401,000

High Brow CD, the 2007 NCHA Futurity Open champion and a leading sire of the earners of $8.6 million, was the high seller of the evening. The 14-yearold son of High Brow Cat, consigned by Grace Ranch, brought $401,000 from Robert S. Collins/Homeplace Horse & Cattle, Blackville, S.C.

32

Tatum Rice, the NCHA Hall of Fame earner of $1,984,161, has shown in five previous NCHA Futurity Open Finals, including in 2016, when he rode Hashtags ($498,692), who would go on to win many limited age event championships with Rice. This year, Hashtags and Rice also won the NCHA Open World Championship. Badboonarising is owned by Plantation Farms., Denham Springs, La. Bred by Royce Stallcup, the black stallion is from the second crop of his sire, Once In A Blu Boon, who was also represented in the Futurity Finals by Pepsi Boon, shown by Ryan Moore for Jerry and Luann Jeffries. Badboonarising is out of Show Biz Kitty, an unshown daughter of High Brow Cat and dam of SS Black Lil Kitty ($185,839), by Blue Bayou Boon, and Rollz Royce ($173,604), by Dual Smart Rey. Show Biz Kitty is out of Show Biz Sandy, 1993 NCHA Open World Champion and dam of 5 NCHA money earners with average earnings of $72,961. Adan Banuelos, the NCHA Hall of Fame earner of $2,148,244, was an NCHA Futurity Finalist riding two horses in 2013, Cat Stevens ($92,674) and Metallic Warrior ($128,406) CR Tuff Taboo, by Woody Be Tuff, is owned by Center Ranch, Centerville, Tex., and is one of three finalists sired by Woody Be Tuff and bred by Center Ranch, including CR Tuff Tizzy, shown by Travis Rempel for Rocking P Ranch, and CR Tuff Twinkie, winner of the Open SemiFinals and shown by Jason Clark for Center Ranch. CR Tuff Taboo’s dam, Cats Boonolena, by High Brow Cat, is out Peptolena Lucinda, maternal dam of 2013 NCHA Futurity Champion Dual Smart Kitty ($316,251). Boyd Rice, the NCHA Hall of Fame earner of $4,3454,123, is a past NCHA Super Stakes and NCHA Derby champion, the 2005 NCHA Open World Champion on Bobs Hickory Rio, and an NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity champion. SF Hottish Lumi Cat, owned by Linda Fielhaber, Jacksonville, Tex., was an NCHA Futurity Open Limited finalist with Foster Johnston on November 28. The Hottish-sired colt is out of Ima Phat Cat, an unshown High Brow Cat daughter, whose first money earner is SF Hottish Lumi Cat. Ima Phat Cat is out of the Parkman Bar daughter Luminosa Dunny ($57,437), producer of three NCHA earners of $15,664. Foster Johnston, the NCHA earner of $369,323, was a 2011 NCHA Futurity Open Limited finalist, but this was his first time to qualify for the NCHA Futurity Open Finals.

60th WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS – The 60th edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo proved to be historic. And not just because it marked 60 years of the Finals crowning world champions. Trevor Brazile won his PRCArecord 14th All-Around gold buckle, adding to his ever-growing record of PRCA championships, this one No. 24, in front of 17,150 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Saturday, Dec. 15.

Meanwhile, Sage Kimzey became the first bull rider in the NFR era to win five consecutive world championships. ProRodeo Hall of Famer Jim Shoulders won six consecutive bull riding world titles, but that was before the NFR began. “Anytime your name is by Jim Shoulders’ you are in a league you can’t put into words,” said Kimzey, 24. “He is one of the greatest cowboys of all time and it means the world to me.” Kimzey’s fifth bull riding world title also puts him in precious company. Only four other bull riders have won at least five – Don Gay won eight, Shoulders seven, and Smokey Snyder and Harry Tompkins each won five. 34

Kimzey was banged up throughout the Finals, and that reflected in the fact that he rode four bulls. But Kimzey saved the best for last. Hopping on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Record Rack’s Shootin’ Stars, Kimzey posted a 93-point ride. Making it more impressive was the fact that Kimzey was bruised and battered. “This year was tough, it was just sheer grit and determination from the start of the year,” he said. “It started with a fractured pelvis, and it was a 365-day grind. Going into here with a big lead, then getting hurt in the first round – it was a brutal 10 days and it was hard to get out of bed.” While Kimzey’s career continues to flourish, Brazile announced before the Finals started that the 2018 season marked the last time he would rodeo full time. Brazile is going to an abbreviated schedule in 2019 to spend more time with his family. Then he went out and won his 14th All-Around title, and he did it by winning Round 10 of the tiedown roping in 7.2 seconds. It was his 71st career go-round win at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – in tie-down roping and team roping – and National Finals Steer Roping. Yet another record. “When I came into Round 10, I was honestly so thankful that I had another chance,” Brazile said. “It wasn’t maybe the best chance. I had to win the round and do some certain things, but it was at least a chance, and as a competitor that’s all you can ask for.” Brazile entered Round 10 trailing his brother-in-law Tuf Cooper by a little more than $12,000. Cooper won the All-Around title in 2017. “It’s a really unique situation because I love him so much, and I’m his biggest fan, too,” Brazile said of Cooper. “It’s a crazy dynamic that we’ve lived for so long, but I can’t wait to just set back and be able to watch him instead of competing against him.” And while some say Brazile should keep going as hard as ever, especially after the win, that’s not his thinking. “The first question everybody wants to ask is you can’t go out now,” he said. “But, the competitor in me, this is the only way to go out. It was hard to swallow the other scenarios.

O’Connell battles to win third consecutive bareback riding title

“I knew when I nodded my head, I was going to leave it all out there,” said O’Connell, 27. “Obviously, the chaos at the end showed it. Luckily, God left me with some safety. I might be a little banged up. It feels so much different. I had to fight. You guys had to see me fight.”

Smith/Eaves claim first team roping world titles

Two-time defending bareback riding champion Tim O’Connell came into the 2018 Wrangler NFR with the slimmest margin in the world standings he’d had over the last three years. He saw that lead of $14,822 vanish by Round 7 of the Finals, with Caleb Bennett moving into first. But O’Connell wasn’t ready to relinquish his title of world champion just yet. O’Connell split the aggregate with Steven Dent to propel the Zwingle, Iowa, cowboy to his third consecutive world championship with $319,801. “It’s surreal,” said O’Connell, who didn’t move into first place in the world standings until August. “It was a battle from Day 1. The season started slow, it picked up. It was a fight through the end of the season. It came down to me leaving it all on the line when it came down to the 10th round.” Only seven bareback riders have won four or more world championships. O’Connell vowed to treat the last two rounds like it was the third period of a wrestling match. He went out and won Round 9. Then in Round 10, he posted an 87-point ride on J Bar J’s All Pink to split fifth and earn the tie in the aggregate. O’Connell got thrown off after the whistle and landed awkwardly. He eventually walked off under his own power though. Nothing was going to keep him from getting that third gold buckle.

JANUARY 2019

Clay Smith and Paul Eaves went out in the best way possible together. The duo who decided before the Wrangler Finals kicked off Dec. 6 to go their separate ways on the rodeo trail, put together a team roping championship run. Team roping header Smith and team roping heeler Eaves stopped the clock in 4.4 seconds in Round 10 to clinch third in the aggregate and win their respective world championships with $289,921 each. They each cashed in for $174,577 at the Finals. Their third-place aggregate finish was 34.5 seconds on eight head. Aaron Tsinigine and Trey Yates won the average with 69.6 seconds on 10 head. “It’s everything we’ve worked for,” said Smith, 27. “It’s what we’ve wanted since we were young,” said Eaves, 28. “It’s unbelievable.” Smith and Eaves missed in Round 1, but rebounded immediately, winning Round 2. They placed in Round 3 and won Round 5. They placed in four of the last five rounds. “We just stayed aggressive and tried to win something on every one of them,” said Smith, of Broken Bow, Okla. The two have clicked together since they started together. “It’s not just one thing, it’s a lot of things,” said Eaves, of Millsap, Texas. “The way he (Smith) ropes is aggressive and can catch. He’s got really good horses, and that’s a huge deal.”

Waguespack claims second World Title

Sundell wins first World Title at 33

Buckle No. 2 for tie-down roper Caleb Smidt

Tyler Waguespack opened the 2018 Wrangler NFR with a Round 1 victory. He closed it with a world title. The 28-year-old, Gonzales, La., cowboy claimed his second world championship in three years with $260,013. Waguespack spurred the victory with his aggregate win – 44.5 seconds on 10 head. “This feels just like the first one,” he said. “We worked hard all year and it all paid off.” Waguespack entered the Finals in 10th place. He trailed regular-season leader Curtis Cassidy by $26,425 when the Finals opened. He won Rounds 1 and 8 and placed in five others. Over the 10 days, Waguespack won $180,429. After winning Round 9, Waguespack knew the world title was well within reach. He didn’t crunch numbers, but he did know it was just a matter of taking care of business. “I knew after the ninth round if I could go in and win the average that the world title would take care of itself,” Waguespack said. “I was just making sure to go out there and make a good, solid run in the last round and get the job done.” Having been there before, Waguespack understood what it took to win a world title. He also got some of the best advice from 24-time world champion Trevor Brazile. “You know, man, I think Trevor Brazile said it the best, he described the NFR as a marathon and it’s a marathon you have to sprint 10 nights in a row,” Waguespack said. Waguespack has plans for both of his world championship gold buckles. “I’m going to keep my first one, I’m pretty sure,” he said, “and for sure I’m going to see if my dad will wear the second one.”

For the second time in his career, Caleb Smidt is a world champion. The tie-down roper from Bellville, Texas, won the 2018 gold buckle with $232,817, capping it off by winning the average with 83.7 seconds on 10 head. The average win cashed for $67,269. Smidt’s previous world title (it also included the average title) came in 2015. Smidt’s newest title is the one he’s most proud of. “This is awesome,” said Smidt, 29. “It has been a few years, but this one means a lot more to me than the first one. The first one I was young, and I was just roping. I came out here to rope and do it for my family. To have another world championship and average championship is awesome.” Smidt’s only round win of the 2018 Finals came in Round 1. But that kicked off his Finals with a jumpstart. After that, he placed in four other rounds. “I started off good, placed in the first three rounds and won the first round,” he said. “I got some money bottled up there. The second half (the final five rounds) I was just getting them turned around, tying them down, and that’s what won me the average.” He also just kept catching. “I wanted to do the same thing I’ve been doing all week,” Smidt said. “I got good starts and drew some really good calves. Tonight, I had one that was an OK calf and the horse was good. I’m just glad to be right here, right now.” Smidt was riding Pockets. “Pockets is 11 years old, and I have had him for four years,” Smidt said. “I won the world on him in 2015. He’s awesome. I didn’t ride him all summer. I rode a couple calves on him before I came out here (to the NFR), and he made it easy enough for me. We’ve got two gold buckles.”

Kinsel cruises to first World Title Wade Sundell qualified for the saddle bronc riding for the Wrangler Finals every year between 2007 and 2015. He didn’t make the Finals again until 2018. And this year wasn’t easy, as the 33-year-old’s house burned down over the summer. But Sundell won $177,327 at the Finals to propel him to his first gold buckle with $280,636. “Words can’t explain it, it’s amazing,” he said. “I’ve been trying to do it since the first time here, but I’m glad it came and hope there’s more to come.” Sundell focused on getting back to Las Vegas. He accomplished that, getting in with the eighth-most money won among saddle bronc riders. He trailed regular-season leader Jacobs Crawley by $64,792. But Sundell chipped away at the leaders. He just kept riding. He placed in the first three rounds, won Round 5, placed in Round 6, split the win in Round 7 and placed in the last two rounds. He claims he did nothing different from what he’s always done. “Just go day by day and do what you’ve been doing your whole life – keep your chin down and have fun riding bucking horses.” Sundell already has plans for all the money he won. “Life will do that to you,” he said about his housefire. “But keep your chin up – there’s no sense in being a Sally. … (I will) rebuild the house.” As for his immediate plans. “Go home and relax,” he said.

JANUARY 2019

With her first gold buckle already in hand, barrel racer Hailey Kinsel switched to her backup horse and cruised in Round 10. Kinsel won with a WPRA singleseason record $350,700. She wrapped up the world championship following her Round 9 victory. “We had (the world championship) won, and I could have run (Sister) to try for that Top Gun deal, but she owes me nothing,” Kinsel said. “We accomplished our main goal, and we are getting ready for 2019. So, she had the night off and I ran my backup horse, TJ. He proved that he deserves to be here, too.” Kinsel finished seventh in the aggregate, winning four rounds along the way. She may have clinched a night early, but she didn’t get her gold buckle officially until after Round 10. “I love it,” she said. “It’s outstanding. We’ve dreamed to have this, and it’s even more than I could have imagined.”

Dougherty wins RAM Top Gun Award Bull rider Chase Dougherty, a newcomer to the Wrangler NFR, won the RAM Top Gun Award, given to the competitor who wins the most money in the Finals in one event. Dougherty won $209,058 over the 10-nights of the Finals. Steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack was second with $180,429. As the winner, Dougherty was awarded a 2019 RAM 3500 Heavy Duty Truck. He also received A RAM Top Gun-branded gun from Commemorative Firearms, as well as a custom Top Gun buckle from Montana Silversmiths.

ARENA ROCK REMOVAL IN ARIZONA About Rock Relief

HOW IT WORKS

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing.

Here at Rock Relief, we pride ourselves for having the one and ONLY Rock Relief machine. Unlike “those other companies” that claim to have an arena rock removal machine, Rocklyn is designed to remove rock specifically from arenas. She is the Queen of the arena. This is why we have a superb reputation.

Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket.

Meet Rocklyn... She’s a badass arena rock removal machine designed with few moving parts and extremely durable components.

We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

New AQHA Supreme Champion BRTSendingMyRegards

44

in halter and performance classes at more than five different AQHA shows, including two grand champion titles. The performance points must come in a riding class and in cattle classes, like roping and cutting. BRTSendingMyRegards is a 2009 gray stallion by Chicks Regard and out of the Holland Ease mare Aleisha Elaine. He was bred by Ryan Story Chesley of Perkins, Oklahoma, with the guidance of 30-year breeder Dr. Bob G. Story of Perkins, Oklahoma. The stallion was undefeated in his halter career, winning the halter performance stallion world championship at the 2013 Adequan® Select World Championship Show. BRTSendingMyRegards earned AQHA points in heading and ranch riding with trainer Steve Orth of Guthrie, Oklahoma. He has also

earned an AQHA Champion title. The stallion and his connections are featured in the December issue of The American Quarter Horse

RICKY NICOLAZZI Cow Horse C

Clinic Photos by Sandra Walker

What a beautiful day it was for a Cow Horse Clinic at the Smoking Rooster Ranch in Rio Verde, Dec 23rd, 2018. Eleven riders took part in the full-day clinic and Ricky Nicolazzi. The first thing all the riders worked on was their Dry Work - this is a set of maneuvers without the Cow involved (similar to Reining) After everyone had a chance to warm up their horses and work on stops, roll backs and spins - Then for the lunch break they all gathered inside the barn entertainment area for a full Holiday Italian lunch, home made by Anna, with all of the trimmings. The group of riders and auditors got to visit, relax and get something to eat. Cindy Bistodeau was on hand with Standlee Forage feed with samples of their new product - Pill Carriers (for medicating your horse with ease). Anna Nicolazzi, Ricky’s wife, works for Nutrena Feed and she had samples and information about her products as well. After the break, everyone mounted-up and had the opportunity to work one at a time on the ‘flag’. Flag work is done along the fence with the horse working the electronic flag as it moves back and forth - this practice gets the horse keyed in to following the movements of the real cow, later on. In this controlled environment, beginner and advanced riders were able to tune-up and learn a lot about setting up their horse to successfully work the cow/flag in a cutting fashion or when moving down the fence like in a real Cow Horse competition. Ricky took a lot of time to coach each rider, and his advice was fined tuned to the individuals needs. However he had sound advice that rang-true for every horse and rider team. “Work on the basics, this creates a strong platform for all learning and competition,” Ricky said over and over!” It was amazing to see every horse and rider improve at a rapid pace with the coaching from Ricky,” expressed Cindy Bistodeau, “I wish I had my horse here today!” 48

Ricky, has been a professional horse trainer for over 25 years training and showing horses is what he loves, it is his job and hobby at the same time! Talking to him is like reading a book! He remembers major results, knows all the traditions and loves to keep educating himself about breeding, training methods, and what it takes to win in the great sport called Cow Horse! He moved with his family to the USA in 2009 to chase his dreams in the Reining and Cow Horse World. Over the last two years he has been the right-hand-man for Andrea Fappani. While at Fappani’s, Ricky achieved great results in reining competitions while learning so much. He was still able to run his own business with a very small number of horses before and after his work at Fappani’s. The Cow Horse became his deepest passion, so for this coming year he will focus on training and showing Cow Horses. Beginning January 2019 Ricky will be the head trainer for Heaven Sent Ranch and running his business, Ricky Nicolazzi Training Stable, at their gorgeous facility the “Bandalero Ranch” in Tucson, Arizona

In just a short time, here is a list of some of his Cow Horse achievment’s: - Ricky was 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open High score reinwork and Top 10th finalist Open and Int. open. - With limited NRCHA showing, he also placed very well at every event this year -- AQHA World Show Jr Working Cow horse L2 and 3 5th Place - NSHA Open Derby, 3rd Place - NSHA Intermediate Open Derby Reserve Champion - NRCHA Open Derby, 6th Place - NRCHA Intermediate Open Derby, 4th Place - Sherri Gilkerson Open Hackamore Spectacular, 5th Place - Sun Circuit Junior Working Cow Horse Reserve Champion

“My first Cow Horse clinic in AZ was a great success, it was totally booked with 11 awesome riders and several auditors!”

“I am very excited for this great opportunity and am looking forward to this new chapter of life. I want to Thank my family and great friends that have helped to make this all possible.

A second clinic is now in the planning stages for Spring of 2019.

“We have to make sure and send out a huge Thank You to Smoking Roosters Ranch, owners Pat and Elisa Fumagalli, and to resident trainers Dan & Wendy Huss and Ashley Luffy for hosting it in their gorgeous and friendly facility!” Ricky says. appreciatively.

Victory Comes in Many Forms for Mother-Daughter Barrel Racers Angela and Jackie Ganter

When faced with setbacks like Angela Ganter and her daughter, Jackie, have experienced recently, most riders would simply hang up their cowboy boots and call it a day. But for this mother-daughter duo of barrel racers, victory comes in many forms simply because they refuse to give up on each other. 2018 has proved to be a great year for both women, in spite of the

challenges thrown at them. Angela is back in the saddle after a long and rigorous battle with breast cancer and Jackie is racing to the top of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) after a very rough start to the year. For Angela, the thought of being a top rated barrel racer after 8 years of battling breast cancer seemed pretty far out of

reach. However, with the help of her daughter, Jackie, and an awesome new horse, Angela has found herself back in the rodeos and riding better than ever. “I bought a horse in February of 2017 after trying to put myself back together from being sick,” she explains, “Then, in March of 2017, Jackie told me one day that she didn’t think I was trying hard

enough to fix myself – my balance and my nervous system. So, I hired a trainer and got my balance back and I also found another horse who taught me how to run barrels again.” Angela continues, “Then, about January of this year, I decided I was ready to have a better horse.” She describes how she found and bought a horse named Bogie French Bug after riding him for about 20 minutes at the stock show in Fort Worth. “Since then I’ve won six pro rodeos in Canada this year on him and made the Canadian Finals. It was just kind of a dream come true and he’s just kind of a miracle for me!” Looking forward, Angela says she has her sights set on making it to Calgary in 2019. “I’ll probably ride better now than before I got sick,” she explains, “After being sick for eight years, I guess you wake up and kind of decide that any day can be your last day, so you better make the best of it.” She goes on to say that her main focus, however, is to help Jackie get to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). “Whatever that takes, that comes first,” she insists. Angela and Jackie have been traveling together for the last several years since Jackie has been in the WPRA. They usually haul 4 or 5 horses to each rodeo. Jackie explains, “We get to travel together, we get to compete together, and it’s fun when we can win together! That’s something that a lot of people don’t get to experience.”

Over fences enthusiast have a lot to look forward to this March. Sun Circuit and Greenway saddlery are teaming up once again to offer Jumpers two prestigious Derbies on March 5th with loads of cash and great prizes. The Open Hunter Derby has $5,000 added along with 65% of the entry fees. The Champion also will receive an embroidered dress cooler, and reserve will be awarded an Intrepid Triple Stitched halter with brass name plate. The Greenway Saddlery Non-Pro Hunter Derby rewards the champion handsomely

with a prize pack that includes a Marcel Toulouse Desiree Genesis Saddle with stirrup leathers, Sprenger German stirrups and a fancy padded leather girth. The non-pro champion horse will also be sporting an embroidered dress cooler. Jayne Hickey, owner of Greenway Saddlery is enthusiastic about offering this opportunity again. She says, “We want to get those jumpers from all

over the country to make the trip to Sun Circuit. Derbies are a wonderful incentive for Jumpers.” She adds that the prizes and cash awards encourage the big jumper barns to attend, thus making larger class numbers all the way around. The non-pros have been thrilled in past years to have their own class so they are not competing with pros for great prizes. Jayne says, “The non-pros who have won the champion

Derby saddle over the years have been so gracious and appreciative of the wonderful prizes.” Riders will jump fence heights based on the experience of the horse in both Derbies. “They always build a user friendly course at Sun Circuit,” comments Jayne. “Its a nice, big arena: it flows right and has the right number of strides between fences. Its also nice that they allow you to school the jumps earlier in the week, so by the time the Derby runs, the horses are ready to go.” The Derbies are two full rounds. After round one, everyone has their numerical score so they know where they stand, and exhibitors run in reverse order for round two. That can lead to some exciting finishes. Jayne is committed to promoting the Greenway Saddlery Hunter Derbies because it helps expose jumping to a wider audience. The Derbies will be held in the prime Equine Chronicle arena where spectators can gather to watch this exciting, yet often overlooked slice of AQHA athleticism. Quarter Horse jumpers are a fairly small group, yet they are wildly encouraging and supportive of new-comers to their ranks. They also have a lot of fun. Jayne explains that there is often a barrier for equitation or hunter under saddle exhibitors to move into jumping since most traditional Quarter Horse barns do not have trainers who specialize in it. “I think there are a lot of people who would like to try it, but they don’t have someone to help them get there.” She believes that the added exposure the Derbies give to the sport inspires more people to seek out jumping trainers. “It’s not that hard, the jumps are itty-bitty,” she jovially encourages. “Even if a rider doesn’t want to eventually compete at the highest level, they can get good enough to be competitive in hunter hack, adding one more class to what they can do at a show.” The complete schedule of jumping classes can be found at sun circuit. com

Paint scores $283K payday at 2018 World Series of Team Roping

by Jessica Hein

Chrome equals cash—at least it did for Courtney Myers and Scenic Jetalena at the 2018 World Series of Team Roping finals in Las Vegas. Courtney and “Cisco” paired up with partner Jay Hipp for the #10 Yeti WSTR Finale, capturing second place overall and a paycheck worth $283,000 in the world’s richest team roping that paid out more than $2 million.

The team was the high callback for the final round of the #10, but a single leg catch on the heel side cost them the lead. Still, their 34-second total on four steers securely planted them in the reserve spot and a sweet chunk of cash. Courtney, a Master’s student in Ag Science at Texas A&M University– Commerce, has owned Cisco for five years. She’s from Refugio, Texas. “I got him from Joe Braman, and I have won quite a bit on him; Chad Masters had him for some time and started him then went to the Braman family,” Courtney said. “Last year I won about $26,000 on him in Vegas and I also did college rodeo on him. He’s the kindest, most giving horse I’ve ever had. Everyone asks about my Paint! If I could, I’d have about 10 of him in the barn! “If it wasn’t for this Paint Horse, I would not be where I was today. I owe him the world and then some.” Cisco is a 1999 red dun overo gelding by Leg O Lena and out of Scenic Angelitta. He was bred by Allen or Kathy Shelton of Trinity, Alabama. The World Series of Team Roping XIII Finale took place December 9–16 in Las Vegas, paying out $12 million in nine qualifying-based ropings that drew competitors from around the country.

Senate Shepherds Animal Protection Reforms to Passage in Farm Bill

Animal Wellness Action applauds the U.S. Senate for passing the Farm Bill, which includes several broadly supported animal protection bills – the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act, Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act, and the Parity in Animal Cruelty Enforcement (PACE) Act. These important pieces of legislation adopted mark the biggest gains for animal protection advocates in the 115th Congress. What’s more, an

overreaching and dangerous attack on states’ rights, in the form of an amendment from Steve King, R-Iowa, was abandoned from the final omnibus agriculture policy bill, that will now move to the U.S. House for consideration this week. “This is the richest harvest of animal protection policies in the entire 115th Congress, and may just be the greatest farm bill for animal protection in American history,” notes Marty Irby, executive director at Animal

Wellness Action. The PAWS Act, led by U.S. Reps. Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Jeff Denham (R-CA) and U.S. Sens. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Dean Heller (R-NV), will provide protections for pets of domestic violence, and authorizes a grant program to allow domestic violence shelters to accommodate pets. Currently, only 3% of shelters nationwide have the ability to accept pets, presenting a significant barrier that prevents victims from

fleeing an abuser. Abusers often harm or threaten to harm a pet as a way to maintain control over a victim. The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act bans the slaughter and import/export of dogs and cats for slaughter. The measure was led by U.S. Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Alcee Hastings (D-FL) and also passed the U.S. House as a standalone bill in September. In the Senate, the effort was led by U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). This is the most extreme form of dog exploitation on the planet, with perhaps more than 30 million dogs butchered for their meat, mainly in Asia. Passage of the legislation sends an important message condemning the practice and sets an example for the global community as we urge South Korea, Vietnam, and other nations to end this practice.

The PACE Act, led by U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam (R-IL), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), and Vern Buchanan (R-FL) in the House, and U.S. Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in the Senate, ensures that long-standing federal restrictions on dogfighting and cockfighting apply to U.S. territories. This is the fifth time the federal animal fighting law has been upgraded in the last 16 years, and these new provisions will allow for a crackdown on cockfighting and dogfighting in American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The King Amendment would have preempted state laws that imposed any standards on agriculture and gutted state protections for animals, the environment, food safety, and worker protection. That provision never gained traction in the Senate, and was broadly opposed in the House, too. “We commend the U.S. Senate for passing these important animal protection bills, and we especially thank Agriculture Committee leadership, Chairman Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Ranking Member Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), for their valuable work to advance animal welfare in the United States. We call on the U.S. House to swiftly pass this bill,” said Holly Gann, Director of Federal Affairs at Animal Wellness Action.

CLAYTON BIGLOW SETS ARENA RECORD WITH 93-POINT RIDE Bareback rider Clayton Biglow had never been on C5 Rodeo’s Virgil. Biglow was in the Thomas & Mack Center and competing in Round 3 in 2017 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo when Tim O’Connell tied an arena record on the horse. On Monday night, Dec. 10, Biglow finally got his chance to climb aboard. He didn’t waste the opportunity. Biglow notched an arena-record, 93-point ride on Virgil, receiving a standing ovation from the 16,877 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas during Round 5 of the 60th edition of the Wrangler NFR. Biglow was understandably excited when he saw his name paired with Virgil, the two-time Bareback Horse of the Year. “Oh, outstanding,” said Biglow, eight days shy of his 23rd birthday. “I’ve been wanting to get on him since the first time I saw him. Before the NFR even started I thought to myself, ‘Well, if there’s a place to draw him it’d be here, that’s for dang sure.’ Last night, when I got the draw and I saw his name next to mine I couldn’t sleep at all. I sat there as happy as could be. I couldn’t shut up about it to my girlfriend.” Only 10 other cowboys have ever been 93 points or better in the history of the PRCA – six have scored 93, the other four 94. Biglow and Virgil now stand among the best rides in PRCA history. “It’s awesome and humbling,” Biglow said. “I’m just happy my name’s up there right now with all the other greats – a lot of people have been 90 points. A bunch of guys in that locker room have also been 90 and set records. To be in that group of guys it’s what I’ve always dreamed of.” The Clements, Calif., cowboy loved every bit of the ride. He knew it felt good. He knew he’d be in the money. He thought he had a chance to win. He did more than that, obliterating the arena record by 1.5 points. “Well, in my mind, I was thinking 89, 90, but I did not think it was going to be 93,” Biglow said. The victory helped Biglow climb into third place in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $192,551. “It gives me that boost of confidence that I can ride against those guys and win,” Biglow said. O’Connell, the two-time defending world champion, is still in first place with $227,147.

Farm Bill Becomes Law Securing $2 Billion for Farmland Protection

“Today we celebrate for farmland. With the 2018 Farm Bill signed into law, we secure another $2 billion for the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, which compensates landowners for committing to keep their land in agriculture. Those funds will help save some of the most important land in this nation, essential to both the food supply and environmental health. American Farmland Trust, the recognized national leader in farmland protection, has fought hard to secure federal funding to protect our nation’s farmland and ranchland since our founding in 1980. During this Farm Bill process, AFT targeted increased funding for the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, making it our number one priority. AFT sincerely thanks the leadership of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees for addressing our priority and recognizing the importance of farmland and ranchland protection in passing the 2018 Farm

John Piotti Bill and the President for quickly making it law. Though this Farm Bill is ‘evolutionary’ rather than ‘revolutionary,’ it nonetheless provides a much-needed degree of support and stability to a struggling farm community. Beyond this, the new money for farmland protection is a major victory for both farmers and the environment. AFT looks forward to working with the administration on its implementation.” This statement can be attributed to John Piotti, president and CEO, American Farmland Trust

Tish Fappani Wins NRHA Non Pro Futurity

The competition in the 2018 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Cinch Non Pro Futurity was hot, but Tish Fappani kept her cool despite a three-way runoff for the championship. Fappani claimed her third Level (L) 4 Non Pro Championship tonight aboard

the arena Samantha Smith riding Neverthoughtiwould and Madison Steed aboard Into The Nite were in a two-way tie with a 222 ½. After the completion of her run, a two-way tie turned into a threeway tie, but Fappani kept her cool in the runoff marking a 223 ½ and clinching the win [video]. “His first run he was really good, he is such a powerful horse, but I had a few bobbles on my end so we tied,” said Fappani “I’ve never had to do a run off at a major aged event.” She went on to add “He [Icecube] went back in there and tried even harder for me.” Earning the title of 2018 NRHA Cinch Non Pro L4 Reserve Co-Champion and L3 Champion was Samantha Smith and Neverthoughtiwould (NRHA Million Dollar Sire Pale Face Dunnit x Shine Tini) [video]. The cremello gelding is owned by NRHA Million Dollar Owner Lance Griffin and nominated by Ginger Schmersal. When asked about her run Smith said, “Going in the first time I knew there was a pretty big score to beat, but I just wanted to be good. My plan was to show smart because he is a fun horse but to be able to put the hammer down and show him clean and correct and it worked.” Smith gave credit to her trainer, Martin Larcombe and how prepared he had her horse for tonight. Madison Steed and Into The Nite claimed the Cinch Non Pro L4 Reserve Co-Championship and L2 Championship [video]. Into The Nite, nominated by Turnabout Farms, Inc. and owned by Steed, is by NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire Gunners Special Nite and out of Chexy Dun It. “My first run he was awesome. He turned better in there than I think he has in his entire life. We bobbled in the run in on the first one, but he is three and he tried super hard, and I really couldn’t have asked for a better horse,” said Steed when asked about her run. Wining the Cinch Non Pro L1 and Youth Championship as well as the L2 Reserve Championship was Sam Flarida riding

Yosemite says Goodbye to a 32-year-old Patrol Horse. He's Going into Retirement

Yosemite National Park employees are saying farewell to patrol horse Ben as he goes into retirement. He is a 32-year-old patrol horse who has been working at the park since 1992, according to a Facebook post. "He has spent his career patrolling trails throughout the park, being

part of honor guards, leading mule trains and more," the post says. Ben will spend his retirement out at pasture with the ranger who trained him in the early '90s. Yosemite has about 90 horses and mules, the post says, who are essential to the operation of the park. When it's time for a horse to retire, they are adopted out to "carefully selected people."

NEW U.S. Dressage Development Coach

US Equestrian has announced the appointment of Charlotte Bredahl as the U.S. Dressage Development Coach, pending final contract negotiations. Bredahl will take over for the newly appointed U.S. Dressage Technical Advisor and Chef d’Equipe, Debbie McDonald, who previously held the position of Development Coach. The role of the Development Coach is to work hand in hand with the Managing Director of Dressage, the Technical Advisor, and the Dressage Sport Committee to assist with the development of a sustainable system to produce combinations for the Dressage Elite Athlete Pathway. The collaboration between Bredahl and McDonald has been longstanding through their work in their previous roles over the past four years, and will continue in their newly appointed positions. “I have had the opportunity to work closely with Charlotte [Bredahl] over the last few years,” said McDonald. 100

Harnessed horse unearthed in ancient stable near Pompeii Archaeologists have unearthed the petrified remains of a harnessed horse and saddle in the stable of an ancient villa in a Pompeii suburb. Pompeii archaeological park head Massimo Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA that the villa belonged to a high-ranking military officer, perhaps a general, during ancient Roman times. Osanna was quoted on Sunday as saying the remains of two or three other horses were also discovered.

The villa's terraces had views of the Bay of Naples and Capri island. The area was previously excavated, during the early 1900s, but later re-buried. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed flourishing Pompeii, near present-day Naples, in 79 A.D. Osanna says suffocating volcanic ash or boiling vapors killed the horses. He hopes the villa eventually will be open for public visits.

Paso Finos Prove Perfect for Precision Drill Team

January Tip of the Month

“I had bought myself a very goodlooking Paso Fino, and they said, ‘You should try this, because it’s fun, and your horse would look great,’” recalled Heidi Young, a Connecticut native and US Equestrian member who now resides in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. “I said, ‘Oh, no, I don’t do that kind of thing. I don’t like arena work since I had to suffer through that taking lessons back East!’ Well, they talked me into it, and, of course, it was fun to ride in a drill team!

The 2018 EQUUS Film Festival, held at the WYTHE Hotel and Cinema in New York, Nov. 30- Dec. 2, showcased talented filmmakers from all over the world. There were many awards for various categories, and the Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) won in four of them. “It was exciting to be a part of the EQUUS Film Festival,” said MHF's Executive Director Kali Sublett. “It is a great way to showcase all that is happening in the equine industry as well as a unique way for us to share the message of mustang training and ownership through our work with Veterans. We were honored to receive so many awards for our efforts.” The EQUUS Film Festival was created to highlight and award diverse and creative efforts of those who artistically pay homage to the horse. The festival empowers storytellers to show the history and diverse tapestry of horses in human culture through equestrian content. They have feature films, documentaries, shorts, music videos, commercials, training education materials, art and literature. The Mustang Heritage Foundation’s Virtual Reality (VR) video for the America’s Mustang program placed first in Equestrian Virtual Reality and Equestrian Commercial – Mini. The VR video takes the viewer from where they are to standing in the wild with mustangs. They are able to see the conditions in which mustangs live and how they interact with each other. Working closely with VR filmmaker Greg Hughs, of Big Look Productions, MHF developed the virtual reality experience that not only entertains but also educates viewers. “VR is a terrific medium when you want to capture a viewer’s attention and pull them into your world,” said MHF's Marketing Director, Matt Manroe. “It’s one thing to create a traditional video that people can watch on a TV or computer screen, get distracted and look away. It’s quite another thing for a viewer to put on a headset and get transported to the middle of the desert and see the environment for themselves.” The final video, also produced by Manroe, is titled Honoring Veterans Honoring Mustangs and placed first in the Horses Helping Humans Short category and Equestrian War Horse. This video gives you a glimpse into MHF’s Veterans and Mustangs program to show you how wild mustangs help change the lives of war Veterans. The video is the conclusion to each session and encapsulates the journeys of each of the veteran participants. “It is such a privilege to be able to capture the life changing experience these veterans have had gentling their wild mustangs,” said Manroe. “The veterans are very open about their experiences and the impact the mustangs have had on their lives and their families.” Details regarding the 2018 EQUUS Film Festival can be found online at http://www.equusfilmfestival.net/.

Art of the Cowgirl Brings Recognition to Cowgirl Influencers It may be the hat and boots or just a love for the look and lifestyle. Either way, cowgirls are a unique breed with a sense of style and attitude that beckons artists to their door or pasture and, many times, stirs them to become artists themselves. Art of the Cowgirl, the vision of cowgirl Tammy Pate of Ryegate, Montana, will celebrate this distinctive group of women during the event taking place at Corona Ranch February 8-10 just outside Phoenix, Arizona. “This has been a dream of mine for many years,” said Tammy, a boot maker, horsemanship clinician and yoga instructor. “With my husband Curt, I have had the pleasure to cross paths with some incredible women who live this lifestyle every day and have worked to capture it various forms of art, whether that be rawhide braiding, silver engraving, photography or even the art of training a horse. “Art of the Cowgirl is designed to spotlight these wonderful women while sharing the stories of their families, marriages and partnerships that in turn shaped them.” The event will showcase female makers, master artists, silversmiths, braiders, saddlemakers and horsewomen. The event will not only provide

entertainment and honor women of the West, but will also provide fellowships to individuals to further their knowledge with master artists in the trade of choice. It will include workshops from “Masters,” along with horsemanship clinics, an all-girl ranch rodeo and an elite horse sale, featuring horses bred and trained for ranch work. All consignment fees for the Elite Ranch Horse Sale will go toward funding the Art of the Cowgirl fellowship program. “At the root of all of this is the opportunity to encourage up and coming artists, male and female,” said Pate. “Through our fellowship program, which is a not for profit foundation, we will work to pair those who want to learn with those who are ‘masters’ at their crafts. Funding generated by the event will provide support for the Master and the fellowship recipient.” Pate said that as the event celebrates its inaugural year companies or individuals interested in sponsoring the event, a Master or a fellowship recipient have an opportunity to get involved early and be a part of the excitement for this new event. To learn more about Art of the Cowgirl, go to artofthecowgirl. com or search Art of the Cowgirl in both Facebook and Instagram.
