“Food for Thought”

A few weeks ago I underwent a “Total through your horses. Many people do this Knee Replacement” and am in the and many people choose not to. Bran midst of, I hope a quick recovery. mixed with oil keeps them greased but I By Rocco Wachman Physical Therapy three times a week am convinced that the Psyllium does mix and adjusting to my move back into with the sand present and helps it out of town are taking up most of my time at the moment and the stomach on its trip to the ground. Horses stomach’s fill from for the first time I can remember I have not been on a the bottom up but empty from the top down and the fiber helps horse in over three weeks. That has been the hardest to get the sand up out of the bottom. part of the process for riding is not a Job or a Hobby it is Making sure your horses always have enough fresh water my life. It is what defines me, for my life is about being and water that is not too hot can aid in keeping their stomach’s Horseback……. moving. When the cool spring weather starts to tease hot I also I have taken a job cleaning stalls, a Professional Barn ad some Electrolytes to make the horses drink a little more Cleaner as I would like to be called. It gives me a whole during that transition. We have found that some horses even new perspective of the Horse Industry, let`s say I now though it is hot are still drinking winter amounts of H20. Be sure have added a “Ground Up” understanding of the horse if you water out of a barrel it is located in the shade for some industry. The second week in my new position I noticed horses will back off if the water presented to them is to warm. that one horse had less than half of the manure that he Provide shade even though most of the horses I work should of had at that time of the day and he had also with won`t stand in it but your neighbors who know nothing of backed off on drinking water. I immediately called the horses will be happy. We all have stories of Non-Equine Entities Rocco Wachman owner and she in turn called the Vet. A lot of people would calling or driving in and saying that there is a dead horse in the have said we called too soon…….. Make a long story short we caught a front pasture cause he is laying down in the sun. I always say thank you Colic at the very beginning, even before there were any outward signs of and under my breath comment that: “You should just get your City Ass off distress in the horses behavior. End result the horse was fine by the end my property.” We not only have to deal with what is right for our horses of that day and a disaster was avoided. but also how other people view their care and maintenance. If you have people cleaning your stalls for you I would We had a 32 year old horse years ago that we would keep a suggest that you have a conversation with them about the letter from two Vets that stated the horse was in great condition early signs if Colic. I mean signs that come before the rolling even though it looks thin due to many neighborly inquires about and trashing that we see when horses are in pain from an its appearance. My dear friend, the famous Dr. Oz ask me once impaction. Watching water consumption and the amount of in reference to my health, “How many 290lb. seventy year old's manure dropped can keep you way ahead in keeping your do you know?” He then quickly answered his own question horses healthy. Sand Colic is the number one cause of an correctly by saying, “None, they are all dead.” People, like untimely death for horses in Arizona. horses should not too heavy in their later years. Always feed your steeds from a feeder and or barrel so Check water and keep a lot shade because Arizona really they wont be eating right off the sand or the decomposing can take its toll on a horse and neighbors in this Valley of the granite that is ever present here in the Grand Canyon State. CARBOHYDRATES AND HORSES — WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? Dr. Tania Cubitt & Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premium Western Forage® Nutritional Consultants

The statement, “I want a low carbohydrate feed for my horse”, has become popular in recent years. The reasons, or potential reasons, for wanting a low carbohydrate horse feed could include the desire to influence or modify behavior, or a sensitivity to socalled carbohydrate diseases including: Tying-up, Cushing’s, Laminitis or Insulin Resistance. But before we try to eliminate all the carbohydrate, we should understand more about the carbohydrates in horse diets. Carbohydrates found in horse diets can be roughly divided into two types: Structural and Non-structural. Structural carbohydrates are often referred to as fiber. Fibrous carbohydrates are resistant to enzyme digestion in the small intestine and must be fermented by bacteria in the horse’s large intestine. Bacterial fermentation of fiber yields volatile fatty acids (VFA’s). VFA’s travel to the liver and are converted to energy substrates for the horse. Hay, mature pasture grass, beet pulp and soybean seed coats are good sources of fibrous carbohydrate. On the other hand, non-structural carbohydrates are sugars, or carbohydrates that can be broken down to simple sugars, by enzymes in the horse’s small intestine. These sugars are absorbed from the small intestine and circulate in the blood as glucose. The hormone insulin removes glucose from the blood and stores it in the liver and in muscle as glycogen or when an excess amount of carbohydrate is consumed, it is converted to fat and stored throughout the body. Common examples of non-structural carbohydrates in horse diets include starch from grain (oats, corn, barley, etc) and molasses.

that non-structural carbohydrate content is high. To minimize non-structural carbohydrate, feed more good quality sources of forage. Table 1 shows, on average, the percentage of non-structural carbohydrates in different forage and feed types.

Sugar in Hay and Pasture?

Cushing’s disease is a problem showing up in many horses, primarily old horses, which may be influenced by the non-structural carbohydrate content of the diet. Cushing’s disease is the result of a tumor in the pituitary gland. Two recognized complications of Cushing’s are laminitis and diabetes mellitus. Laminitis and diabetes mellitus both appear to be the result of insulin resistance. Since insulin is required to clear the blood of high amounts of glucose following a meal, diets high in non-structural carbohydrate (sugar) may make diabetes mellitus worse and increase the risk of laminitis in horses with Cushing’s. Therefore, it is common for veterinarians and nutritionists to reduce the amount of non-structural carbohydrate in the diets for horses with Cushing’s, laminitis and insulin resistance. Tying-up, characterized as severe muscle pain and cramping after exercise, is also thought to have a link to dietary carbohydrate. For horses that have chronic episodes of tying-up, two separate problems have been identified. One problem is a muscle sugar (glycogen) storage disorder characterized by accumulation of a non-bioavailable sugar in their muscle. This disorder is called polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) or equine polysaccharide myopathy (EPSM). For other horses that chronically tie-up, a problem with muscle contractility is to blame. This problem is called recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER). For both groups of horses, dietary modifications that include a reduction in non-structural carbohydrate and increases in fat and fiber have shown to be beneficial in minimizing the occurrence of tying-up.

Before going too far in trying to reduce the non-structural carbohydrate content of your horse’s diet, a bit of reality is in order. Hay and/or pasture, the one ingredient that all horses require, contains fibrous carbohydrate which is essential for normal gut function, but hay and pasture also contain sugar and starch. Therefore, complete elimination of sugar and starch from the horses’ diet is not possible. It is a normal function for plants to produce sugar when they grow. In a process called photosynthesis that occurs during daylight hours, carbon dioxide, water and energy from the sun are utilized by the plant to form sugar. Sugar is then utilized by plants at night, in a process called respiration, to form more complex fibrous carbohydrates. When photosynthesis outpaces respiration, such as during cool nights in the spring and fall, plants accumulate sugar. Plants also accumulate sugar if they are stressed by drought, or by nutrient deficiencies. The sugar content of forage contributes to the total non-structural carbohydrate content of the diet. When horses are diagnosed with carbohydrate related diseases, the sugar content of the total diet must be minimized. To minimize sugar content of hay, it should be cut in the early morning hours, prior to photosynthesis, beginning at first light. If horses are to have access to pasture, they should graze early in the morning when the sugar content of the grass is the lowest. If you have already purchased hay, the sugar content can be reduced by soaking the hay in water prior to feeding it to the horse. Soaking hay in water prior to feeding for 30 or 60 minutes will significantly decrease (by 18 – 30%) the sugar content of forage. Simply selecting the type of hay fed will not always guarantee a low sugar content since sugar content is greatly influenced by environment and plant health. However, the sugar/starch content of alfalfa hay is less than it is in cool-season grasses such as timothy, orchard and rye.

Typical Carbohydrates in Feeds and Hays Since most grain concentrates contain a combination of corn, barley, oats, wheat or molasses, it should come as no surprise

Disorders Associated with Non-structural Carbohydrates

Summary The desire to create a low carbohydrate diet is really a method to control the amount of non-structural carbohydrate (sugar) in the horse’s diet. Structural carbohydrate (fiber) should not be the target for elimination since fiber is essential for proper function and motility of the horse’s digestive system. It is still recommended that horses receive a minimum of 1.5% of their body weight per day in dry forage to provide essential fiber. To reduce the non-structural carbohydrate content of the diet, consider eliminating grain, soaking hay prior to feeding it to the horse or selecting a hay that is known to have a lower non-structural carbohydrate content.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Randy Corley, an 11-time PRCA Announcer of the Year, joins five world champions to headline the 12-member 2017 induction class for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, which was announced Tuesday. Corley, along with gold buckle winners including the late Buck Rutherford (all-around, 1954), Enoch Walker (saddle bronc riding, 1960), Tommy Puryear (steer wrestling, 1974), Mike Beers (team roping, 1984) and Cody Custer (bull riding, 1992), will be enshrined with rodeo notable Bob Ragsdale, a 22-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier in three events. Beers, a heeler, won his world championship while roping with header Dee Pickett, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2003. Beers qualified for the NFR 23 times in team roping (1980-95, 199798, 2000-03, 2007). “This is like winning the world,” Beers said. “You hear about all these guys like Larry Mahan, Ty Murray, Dee Pickett, Leo Camarillo, Clay O’Brien Cooper and Jake Barnes, and to be put in a category with those guys is a great honor.” Custer’s eight trips to the NFR and 1992 bull riding world championship win landed him in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. “It wasn’t a call I wasn’t waiting on or expecting – it’s one of those deals I thought about it, but you don’t sit on your hands and wait,” Custer said. “I was overwhelmed and a bit emotional, and didn’t have much to say.” Custer first joined the PRCA in 1985 and went on to qualify for

Cody Custer the NFR from 1987-92, and again in 1998-99. He remained an active competitor through 2002. “I was just a kid from Arizona who had big dreams to do something in rodeo,” Custer said. “Fortunately for me, I had a Cinderella-type career, and in the middle of it you take it for granted – this kind of recognition means a lot to me – as much or more than winning the world title.” Although she had to wait 22 years to join her legendary horse Scamper in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, James is ecstatic to be a part of this historic class. James, who grew up in Clayton, N.M., the home of the very first barrel racing National Finals Rodeo in 1959, won the first of 10 consecutive world titles at the youthful age of 14 in 1984. James was the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 back number in 1987, and became the first barrel racer to cross the $1 million record in career earnings. In addition to the 10 consecutive world titles (1984-1993).

Mize captures his inaugural Xtreme Bulls Division 1 win in Arizona

FORT MOHAVE, Ariz. – Fear obviously wasn’t a factor for rookie Tristan Mize Saturday night. Competing against a talented field, Mize came out a champion with a score of 173 points in the two-head average at the Xtreme Bulls Division 1 event. It was Mize’s first career Xtreme Bulls win, in only his second attempt. “This feels really good,” said Mize, 20. “There were a lot of very good riders here tonight, and this is my biggest win so far in my PRCA career. I get nervous now and then, and if you don’t get nervous, I don’t

think you’re human, but I was able to relax and do what I needed to do.” Mize was especially happy about the $10,381 he earned for his performance. “That money will help me out a lot,” Mize said. “This is a big win for me and gives me a good confidence boost.” Mize, of Bryan, Texas, set the stage for his victory with an 85-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Starfish. “That was a nice bull, and it felt great to get one rode in the long round,” Mize said. Mize’s ride left him in a tie for

Mize second place with Kurtis Turner, and just one point behind Jeffrey Ramagos, who registered his 86-point score on Championship Pro Rodeo’s Glory. In the finals, things clicked again for Mize as he had an 88-point trip on Honeycutt Rodeo's Bragging Rights. Mize just edged reigning PRCA/ Resistol Rookie of the Year Roscoe Jarboe by 1.5 points to win the average. Jarboe qualified for the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER,

AZ DUST FREE BLASTING

finishing ninth in the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings. He won the short round in Fort Mohave with a 90.5-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Broken Arrow. That tied him for the third-highest scored bull ride this season with Brennon Eldred’s 90.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Muley Madness in Tucson, Ariz. “I just wanted to stay calm and have fun and get my job done,” Mize said. “I had never seen that bull (Bragging Rights) before, and I didn’t know much about him, but he ended up being really good. He went around to the left and kicked real hard and bucked good. When I made the whistle, I was pretty excited because I knew I was going to get a decent score.” Although Mize is only a rookie, he’s not lacking any confidence. “I don’t think there’s any reason of doing anything unless you’re the best at it,” he said. “I ride bulls because I love doing this, and I want to be the best. I love the thrill and the rush of riding bulls, and being able to ride something that weighs that much more than you do, and that moves so fast.”

Donkey Dynamite When Norwegian explorer Carl Lumholtz traversed the Sierra Madres with a pack train in 1890, he heard a noise above him on the switchbacks. He looked up to see a donkey come hurtling past him, “turning over and over with astounding speed,” he wrote in Unknown Mexico. The donkey sailed over Lumholtz’s head and down to a rock pillar below. The donkey hit the base of the pillar, then rolled over twice before coming to a halt. It got up in the midst of its scattered cargo, which turned out to be a case of dynamite. Two of the Mexican packers scrambled down the slope, repacked the dynamite on the shaken, but perfectly fine, little donkey and led it up the trail. Lumholtz noted that the donkey pushed on “as coolly as if nothing had happened.”

The Mules Have It! “There is no more useful or willing animal than the Mule. And perhaps there is no other animal so much abused, or so little cared for. Popular opinion of his nature has not been favorable; and he has had to plod and work through life against the prejudices of the ignorant.” —Muleskinner Harvey Riley, in his 1867 book, The Mule

I Want One of Those! A muleteer related his conversion from riding horses to mules: “I was riding horseback on a steep trail when the pack mule in front of me got bumped off the trail and slid toward a 1,500-foot drop. The first thing I noticed was that the mule spread out—flat—which slowed his slide, and then, with his back hooves dangling off the cliff, he literally reached out with his front hooves and grabbed rocks to help him climb back up the slippery slope. When he regained the trail, he shook himself off and went on his way. It was at that moment, I said, ‘I want one of those!’”

The Mule Stands Tall

Read more about The Mighty American Mule in the May 2017 issue of True West Magazine.

“Father and mother he does not resemble, sons and daughters he will never have; vindictive and patient (it is a known fact that he will labor ten years willingly and patiently for you, for the privilege of kicking you once); solitary but without pride, self-sufficient but without vanity; his voice is his own derision.”

Bullrider Bolton competes on Dancing with the Stars

Bolton is a little more than a year removed from a devastating injury he suffered in Chicago at the beginning of the 2016 season. He will be the second PBR cowboy to compete on the hit show, joining nine-time World Champion and PBR co-founder Ty Murray who competed in 2009.

APRIL 2017

PUEBLO, Colo. – Bonner Bolton, a professional bull rider who suffered a nearly catastrophic bull-riding injury 14 months ago and was given a one percent chance of walking again, was today announced as a contestant on the new season of the ABC hit series Dancing with the Stars. In the Professional Bull Riders’ 2016 Built Ford Tough Series season opener in Chicago, Bolton had been leading the event before landing on his head when dismounting the bull, splitting his C-2 vertebra. Bolton was temporarily paralyzed. Beginning with spinal fusion surgery, the 29-year-old from Odessa, Texas began a remarkable recovery. While Bolton was still immobile, IMG Models, a leading global modeling agency, signed him worldwide. IMG Models and PBR are divisions of WME | IMG, a leading global sports, entertainment and fashion agency. As Bolton continues to recover and branch into new areas, he has been profiled in major magazines and newspapers around the world, shot an ad campaign for Saks Fifth Avenue, and posed for world-renowned fashion photographer Mario Testino for a major feature soon to appear in an international men’s magazine. “The odds are stacked against anyone dealing with an accident, injury, or illness,” Bolton said. “Physically, I feel good. I’m very thankful for what I’ve overcome, and I hope to inspire and motivate others who have challenges.” Bolton, who finished seventh at the 2015 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, is receiving advice from Ty Murray, a nine-time world champion cowboy and founder of the PBR who competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2009, making it to the semifinals. “Bonner has the right attitude and is preparing mentally and physically,” Murray said. “He’s a legitimate cowboy and has the support of the entire bull-riding and western sports community. Bonner is going to be a tremendous ambassador for PBR and all cowboys.” Bolton is paired with Sharna Burgess, a 31-year-old professional dancer from Australia, who has been a runner-up several times on Dancing with the Stars. “Bull riding and dancing both require balance, strength, posture, form and muscle-reflex memory,” says Bolton.

In the beginning, there was the horse.

Nowadays, cutters compete for millions of dollars in prizes. It wasn’t always that way. A nineteenth century cowboy transplanted to the present day would probably be perplexed by the modern world’s high-tech marvels. But he’d still feel right at home at a cutting horse show. When American cowboys of the 1800s began using their best horses to separate individual cows from

NCHA History

a herd, it was part of the daily job. They would never have imagined cutting as one of the world’s most popular equine sports. But each year, thousands of cutting events-from Austin to Australia--attract riders aged eight to eighty. Cutting’s heritage runs strong and deep, like the centuries-old mesquites that flourish on the Texas plains. From Chisholm Trail to present day, cutting horses have

been indispensable tools in the cattle trade. During the era of the open range, cattle from one outfit often drifted and mingled with those of other outfits. Twice a year, in the spring and the fall, neighboring ranchers would join in a roundup to sort out their brands. Every outfit traveled with a remuda of horses. Within the remuda each cowboy had a string

of horses, some of them more suitable for one job than another. For instance, a cowhand needed a steady mount to patrol the herd during the night, but in the morning he could ride last year’s bronc to the far reaches of the roundup circle. The cutting horse was an elite member of the remuda. A typical cutting horse might have started out in a cowboy’s string, but his sensitivity to cattle brought him to the attention of the roundup boss. He was the horse that pricked his ears toward a cow and followed her with his eyes. He instinctively knew not to crowd her, yet was wary of her every move. He made the difficult job of separating cattle easier and quicker. He even made it fun. “It was worth the trip to brush country just to sit above Ol’ Gotch and feel his shoulders roll, watch his ears work and his head drop low when he looked an old steer in the eye,” said cowboy humorist Will Rogers after a visit to a South Texas ranch during the 1920s.

As big cattle outfits gave way to small farms and ranches in the twentieth century, pickup trucks and squeeze chutes took the place of cow horses. A few large ranches still rounded up cattle the old-fashioned way, but cutting horses were fast becoming obsolete. Today, the National Cutting Horse Association has given the cutting horse new life in one of the world’s most exciting equine events. The first advertised cutting contest was held at the 1898 Cowboy Reunion in Haskell, Texas. Fifteen thousand people, lured by ads in the Dallas News and the Kansas City Star, attended. Since the nearest railroad was fifty miles away, they came on horseback, or by wagon and hack. The cutting contest offered a prize of $150, a substantial sum in those days, and 11 riders entered. Old Hub-whose fans swore that he could work blindfolded and without a bridle--was brought out of retirement by Sam Graves for this one event. Graves primed the 22-year-old horse with oat mash and prairie hay, then he tied Old Hub to the back of a hack and led him all the way to Haskell--a two-day journey. It was a trip into the history books, and Graves set aside half of his winnings to ensure Old Hub had the best of care continued on page 40

for the rest of his days. The first record of cutting as an arena spectator event came at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, when a cutting horse exhibition was added to the annual rodeo in 1919. It became a competitive event the following year. By 1946, there were so many cutting horse contests being held, under so many different sets of conditions and rules, that a group of 13 cutting horse owners met at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show and decided to form an association to establish standard rules and procedures for holding such competition. One of the founders, Ray Smyth, said, “When the meeting broke up, we had formed what we thought would be more or less a local cutting horse association. Someone remarked that with luck, we might even get as many as 50 members by another year. Later, at a meeting in Mineral Wells, Texas, the association was incorporated, and Pat Dalton suggested the name ‘National Cutting Horse Association,’ because it looked as though it had the potential to grow into something big. The first show was held in Dublin, Texas, in the fall of 1946. Smyth recalled that secretarytreasurer Volney Hildreth guarded the association’s resources “with a big stick. If we wanted anything that cost money, Volney would tell us to get enough new members to pay for it. When NCHA was formed, most

cutting horses were ranch geldings like Old Paint, a brown and white horse of unknown parentage that Smyth bought for $40 at Weatherford trade days. Old Paint became one of cutting’s first champions. But some of the big ranches had been breeding their own horses for years. The world famous King Ranch had a remuda of copper-colored horses descended from the Old Sorrel. Yellow Jacket horses, with golden coats and black manes and tails, filled the Burnett’s Triangle Ranch pastures; while the Pitchfork outfit was known for cast-iron cow ponies sired by Grey Badger. By 1963, the association recorded the results of 727 events, of which 504 were recognized as NCHA championship events. In those days, cutters vied for a piece of $404,183 in prize money. That included $23,225 paid out at that year’s NCHA Futurity. Fast-forward to 2006, and the contestants at the NCHA Futurity will be divvying up more than $3.7 million--over a hundred times the offering of that first year. Total purses at NCHA-approved shows now exceed $39 million annually. Yet for many, cutting’s greatest rewards are intangible. The bond between people and horses that makes the sport so special, also links it to the sweat and dust of the Old West, and sets it apart from all other events. “The people who brought cutting from the open range to the arena, and turned the skills of the cowman and cowboy into the contest, were real sports, said Buster Welch, a legendary cutting champion. “That fine sportsmanship is still alive and well in cutting today.

FEI Tribunal issues Final Decision on two banned substance cases

WE DELIVER

The FEI Tribunal has issued its Final Decision on two cases involving human Erythropoietin (EPO), a banned substance under the FEI’s Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMRs). Abdulla Mubarak Rashed Al Khaili (FEI ID 10076760/ UAE) and Mohd Butti Ghemran Al Qubaisi (FEI ID 10092584/ UAE), whose horses SUR (FEI ID UAE01796/QAT) and Centurion (FEI ID 102RM71/QAT) both tested positive for the same substance at the CEI1* in Doha (QAT) on 22 April 2016, have been suspended for one year. The trainer of both horses, Mohammed Ali Khalifa AlAttiyah (FEI ID 10082342/QAT), admitted that he had administered the horses with EPO just before the competition. The athletes were therefore found to bear no significant fault and negligence for the rule violation and their

The FEI Tribunal has imposed a two-year suspension on the trainer, who is now ineligible until 4 July 2018 (provisional suspension, effective from 5 July 2016, will be credited against the period of ineligibility imposed in this decision). He has been fined 3,500 CHF and will contribute 1,500 CHF towards the legal cost. The period of provisional suspension of the two athletes, effective from 2 June 2016, has been credited against the period of ineligibility imposed in this decision, meaning that both athletes will be ineligible until 1 June 2017. In addition, the FEI Tribunal imposed on each of the athletes a fine of 2,000 CHF, a contribution of 1,000 CHF towards legal costs and disqualified the athletes and horses from the competition. The athletes and trainer have 21 days to appeal the decisions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) from the date of notification (27 March 2017).

Harry Vold

Harry Alexander Vold died March 13, 2017, at his ranch southeast of Pueblo, Colorado. He was born January 29, 1924, the third of four sons, to Nansen and Kirsten Vold in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Vold grew up in the Asker area east of Ponoka, Alberta. His education included a youth training school that taught etiquette along with a high school curriculum. Proper manners and the lessons learned from growing up in the Depression served him the rest of his life. Following in his father’s footsteps, Vold started auctioneering at age 15. He was self-taught, but his preparation and personality resulted in him being sought after as an auctioneer the rest of his life. Harry was an auctioneer for one year at the Edmonton Stock Yards, and then for 8 years at the Calgary Stock Yards. Vold and his brother Ralph, along with Bill and Shorty Jones, then purchased an auction barn in Ponoka, Alberta. Vold, Jones, and Vold, was a very successful auction business for over 50 years. Vold continued to work as the auctioneer at special events until just a few years before his death. Vold was a cowboy. Growing up in the Depression era times were hard, and as a child Vold broke and traded horses to help earn money. Along with his brothers, Vold built the Asker Stampede Grounds and held the first rodeo there in 1944. By 1948 he had put together a small bunch of bucking horses and put on some small rodeos of his own. Vold also competed in the saddle bronc and bareback riding during that time. As a result of buying, selling, and trading all classes of horses Vold began selling bucking horses to Leo Cremer of Cremer Rodeo Company in Big Timber, Montana, one of the premier stock contractors

of the time. In 1952 Vold had a load of horses to ship to Cremer in Montana, but the border closed due to a foot-and-mouth outbreak. Vold was able to convince the rodeo committee in Ponoka to let him buck the horses there. They bucked so well the committee in Stettler, Alberta, asked him to provide the horses for their rodeo. Vold and his brother trailed the horses 75 miles to that rodeo, and his career as a stock contractor was well underway. Vold first got involved in the rodeo business in the United States in 1967. He purchased a large ranch southeast of Pueblo, Colorado, in 1968. After being associated with several other notable stock contractors, Vold formed the Harry Vold Rodeo Company in 1970. Vold has provided stock to rodeos around the country, including many of the largest and most prestigious rodeos, serving as the stock contractor continuously for over 20 years for many of them. He was wellknown for the quality of the production of his rodeos as well as the quality of his stock. He has provided bucking stock to the National Finals Rodeo every year since its inception and has served as the stock contractor for the College National Finals Rodeo for many years. Vold has had many of the most acclaimed horses and bulls in professional rodeo, with many of them being named bucking horse or bull of the year for the PRCA. Harry Vold Rodeo Company continues to provide bucking horses to numerous rodeos, most recently Denver, San Antonio, and Houston. Vold became a legend in professional rodeo, earning the nickname “Duke of the Chutes.” He was named Stock Contractor of the Year for the PRCA 11 times. He has been inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, the Canadian Hall of Fame, as well as the Hall of Fame for numerous rodeos, including Cheyenne, Pendleton, Pikes Peak, Fort Smith, Ellensburg, and Dodge City. He was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and named ProRodeo Hall of Fame Legend of Rodeo. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles and at least 1 book. Vold was respected and admired for his sound business judgment, honesty, fairness, and his willingness to help virtually anyone. He was always calm and was known for his sage comments, his wit, his charm, and his unselfishness. He served on numerous boards and committees in professional rodeo and on the board of the US Bank in Pueblo, Colorado. He was a mentor and good friend to contestants, rodeo committees, stock contractors, announcers, clowns and bullfighters, pickup men, and others involved in rodeo. He was also highly regarded by people outside the rodeo business, including ranchers, bankers, and business people. In spite of his popularity with such a wide variety of people of all ages, including many well-known celebrities, Vold always remained modest and humble and enjoyed the phone calls he received every day, visiting about everything from politics to cattle prices, and enjoyed having people come to the ranch. Vold grew up next to an Indian reservation, and he had a deep affection and admiration for the Indians. He was extremely proud to have been named an honorary Chief of the Sarcee Indian tribe in 1964. Appropriately, he was called Chief Many Horses. Vold married Eileen Fessler of Ponoka, Alberta, in 1944. They had four children: Wayne, Dona, Doug and Darce. He married Karen Womack in 1972, and was blessed with her daughter, Nancy. They had one daughter together: Kirsten. Vold is survived by his wife, Karen, his children, Wayne, of High River, Alberta; Dona (Bill) Larsen, of Casper, Wyoming; Doug (Allison) of DeWinton, Alberta; Darce, of Greeley, Colorado; and Kirsten, of Avondale, Colorado; 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, his brother, Ralph, of Ponoka, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Nancy Vold, and brothers Clifford and Norman.

2011. Because she helped promote and build the sport among women, it is the fastest growing sector in polo around the world. In 2000, Hale, a member of the Outback team, was the first woman to have won the 26-goal U.S. Open, the sport’s most prestigious event and to achieve a five-goal handicap rating, the highest handicap a woman has ever received among male players. She later created a rating system for women at all levels. She also improved resources regarding polo ponies by starting the American Polo Horse Association, a website where players and owners can collect, preserve and record horses’ pedigrees. “It is fantastic how far women have come in polo,” Hale said recently. “In polo, we have one of the most unique opportunities that women can play on an equal basis as men.” Hale was a motivational speaker, travelling around the world not only talking to polo players and coaches, but major corporations and businesses. She shared her inspiring journey of success and acceptance in a male-dominated sport. She is recognized by both men and women as the most accomplished and well-liked woman polo player in the world. She was hired to play by the best patron and male players, including top-ranked Adolfo Cambiaso of Argentina, for more than 20 seasons. She became the first woman to be named Most Valuable Player in several high-goal tournaments. Hale has been a role model for future generations of female polo players. She started writing books to share what she has learned along the way to the top of her profession. In 2012, she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and has earned the Woman Polo Player of the Year title an unprecedented seven times. Hale has been featured in Sports Illustrated, the New York Times and ESPN. She is survived by her father, Alexander Hale; sisters, Stormy and Dawn; brother, Trails; and her dear friends JoAnne and Dale Smicklas of Norman, Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements are pending, with a celebration of life being held at a later date in Florida. Those close to her have asked to respect her family’s wish for privacy as they mourn her loss. New Zealand Showjumper crowned RTTH World Champion

Road to the Horse 2017 was created in dedication of the cowgirl. “We may have started out to celebrate the cowgirl but what we created was the most inspirational and most exciting Road to the Horse fans have ever seen” stated Road to the Horse Owner/Producer Tootie Bland. In the closest scoring competition in the history of the event, less than approximately 8 points per judge separated each competitor. There was no mistaking, Vicki Wilson was different but there wasn’t any doubting her horsemanship. Wilson was not only the first competitor from New Zealand, she was the first competitor from an English discipline to not only compete but to walk away with the coveted World Championship of Colt Starting title. “This isn’t about being a cowgirl anymore, it’s all about horsemanship” stated the first lady of Road to the Horse, Stacy Westfall, as the competition moved into the final

round on Day 3. Wilson’s Road to the Horse journey was far from scripted. After dislocating her left shoulder during Round 1, many fans were unsure if she could even continue, but she didn’t just continue, she shined. Wilson may have had to alter her strategy with her 6666 Ranch bred colt Boon River Lad, who she fondly named ‘Kentucky’, but she continued

with the grace and grit of a champion. This cowgirl may have had a broken wing, but she certainly showed ‘Kentucky’ how to fly. “My shoulder is sore but when you walk out there, the atmosphere, the people, everything about it, you don’t even think about it. He didn’t quit and I didn’t quit, that’s what being a cowgirl is all about. I believe our job as riders and trainers

Bales,

around the world is to inspire the next generation, to get kids to believe that anything is possible in this life and if we want something bad enough, you have to work hard and be prepared to sacrifice and chase those dreams” Wilson stated as she admired her Gist Silversmith Championship buckle. “Never stop chasing dreams.” Rachelle Valentine selected the 6666 Ranch horse gelding Playin A Seven, this playful grey gelding soon became a fan favorite. Sarah Dawson selected Smart Hunt and California cutting horse trainer Kate Neubert claimed the prestigious Jack Brainard Horsemanship Award riding Sixes Captain. It’s almost a tradition that the winner of Road to the Horse chooses to purchase their colt to continue their training, Wilson didn’t break tradition. “Yes, ‘Kentucky’ is coming back to New Zealand. It’s a bit of a trip for him, but he deserves it. He will become a new demo and clinic pony, he loves his jumping, so that is something we will develop. He is going to be a pretty cool kid.” Follow Road to the Horse on Facebook for the latest information.

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

USE NEPROFIN FOR:

Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

AFTER NEPROFIN AVF USE

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Hay before Grain, or Vice Versa?

By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.

The Best Quality Handmade Hats for the Best People

jimmy@doublehhats.com www.doublehhats.com 201 N. Frontier St. Wickenburg, AZ 85390 121 S. Main St. Darby, MT 59829

This is a recurring question that I receive. Which should be fed first – hay or grain? If you’re feeding correctly, this issue is truly a moot point because the horse should have access to forage in hay and/ or pasture 24/7 with no gaps.

Therefore, when fed concentrates, the horse’s digestive tract should already have hay flowing through it.

1

60

APRIL 2017

But if you were to feed starchy cereal grains (oats, wheat, barley, etc.) on an empty stomach, the horse would produce more acid than normal, which could potentially lead to ulcers. Furthermore, grains leave the stomach quickly, increasing the risk that they will not be fully digested in the small intestine (especially if large amounts are fed), and end up in the hindgut where starch can be fermented by the resident bacterial population. This can lead to endotoxin-related laminitis. A better approach is to have hay present in the stomach first. It creates a physical barrier for the grain, making it leave the stomach less quickly. The fiber in the hay mixes with the starch and the whole mass enters the small intestine to be digested. Fiber is not digested until it reaches the hind gut, but its presence slows down the digestion of starch, and obstructs the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, leading to a less dramatic rise in insulin. Western Dressage judges consider the horse’s confirmation while judging gaits and movements. If the horse has a very high neck set, (notice image of the black galloping horse), the judge still wants to see signs of it moving from the hind end, up, through a soft, rounded, (instead of hollow or stiff) back, relaxed and rhythmic for that individual. If the horse has a low set on neck, same thing, instead of being on the forehand,

WESTERN DRESSAGE Know the Correct Frame for Your Horse

western dressage teaches that horse to work from the hind quarter, up, through a round back in a relaxed

rhythmic, forward manner.

Many riders learn to ride the horse’s head. By that I mean, a lot of the rider’s attention is on the horse’s head and what the horse is or isn’t doing. Sometimes it is out of fear. When some horses lift their head up to look at something far away, or in a distraction, the next thing they may do is move quicker than the rider is comfortable with. So, the rider learns, for safety, to control the height of the

horse’s head. What often happens is depicted in the drawing of the horse “behind the vertical, or bit”. The primary problem with this is that it takes our attention off the part of the body we really need to affect, the horse’s hind quarters. If the hind quarters are working properly, the front end can relax and stretch because the back has come up. Consider a teeter-totter, one end is up, the other down. Notice the image of the grazing horse. When the horse is relaxed with the head down, it stretches the back muscles, tones the abdominal muscles and the back lifts. Notice that this horse’s back looks level from the wither all the way to its tail. Please refer to the drawing of the horse “on the bit or slightly in front of vertical”. Please remember that relaxation is the foundation of the western dressage training scale.

Seeing a lot of older vehicles in the shop as of late. These trucks sure bring back the memories. Although they lack the power from mechanical fuel systems (no computers) they are certainly reliable as all get out. Since 1993 diesel fuel has gone under some significant changes, the most aggressive being in 2006 when this fuel needed to have a majority of the sulfur removed -

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

Tip of the month- Fuel additive, use it or lose it?

Sulfur being a byproduct of diesel fuel, provided the lubrication for our pumps and injectors in the fuel system. ULSD ultra low sulfur diesel fuel spawned a new era in diesel fuel additives. All of the manufacturers of these diesel fuel additives seems to “have the cure”,

but the one thing they all seem to have in common is a lubricity additive. If your truck is pre 2007 your truck NEEDS a fuel additive. If your truck is pre 1998 your truck REALLY NEEDS a fuel additive. Manual injection pump trucks were designed with sulfur in

mind. Not having that sulfur in the ULSD that we use today can be very detrimental for your pump, injectors and truck in general. Manual injection pumps do not get better with age, without a lubricity additive the tight tolerances in the injection pump may be suffering, causing hard starts, lack of power, excessive smoke, poor fuel economy and the list goes on and on. Although and expensive proposition you may want to think about a freshening up of your fuel system, whether it is an overhaul of the pump, replacement or rebuild of injectors, even just having the timing set to verify proper operation, this may put some zip back in your trucks step. Be sure to protect the investment though with a good fuel additive. Strictly Diesel has a very good variety of diesel fuel additives. We try to run them ourselves to see the benefits (or not) before they go on our shelves. Before you dump that additive in your tank, verify it is not good for both gas and diesel. Additives like this may contain alcohol, which will damage fuel injection systems.

Don’t forget to use a fuel additive on your new diesel truck as well. With injection pressures increasing on a yearly basis, the more lubrication you can give your fuel system, the longer you will go without expensive repairs. Give Strictly Diesel a call to let us help you with your fuel additive questions. We have the right additive for you and your diesel truck. And we can’t wait for you to see the results. By Standlee Questions about carbohydrates have begun to multiply faster than rabbits. As an equine community, we’ve become skeptics about carbs in our horses’ diets. It’s become common to hear the phrase, “I want a low carbohydrate feed for my horse.” One of the most prominent potential reasons for wanting a low carbohydrate horse feed is a sensitivity to so-called carbohydrate diseases. In part one of this two part series on “Nutritional Diseases to Watch Out For,” we’ll be taking an in-depth look into what carbohydrates really are and what type of potentially-related diseases we should be aware of.

Are Carbs the Enemy?

On the whole, carbohydrates have been given a bad name in recent years. But before we declare death to all carbs, let’s take a moment to understand what carbohydrates really are. While we tend to sort all carbs

Are Carbs Really Bad For Your Horse? into a single group, they can actually be roughly divided into two groups: Structural and Non-structural. Structural carbohydrates (also called fiber) are the Good Witch of the West. Fibrous carbohydrates are resistant to enzyme digestion in the small intestine and must be fermented by bacteria in a horse’s large intestine. Bacterial fermentation of fiber produces something called volatile fatty acids (VFAs). VFAs travel to the horse’s liver and are converted to energy substrates. This process is essential for their normal gut function. On the other hand, there’s nonstructural carbohydrates. These can be broken down to simple sugars, fructans and starch in a horse’s small intestines. Once absorbed by the small intestines, these simple sugars circulate through the blood as glucose. A hormone called insulin then removes glucose from the blood and stores it in the liver and muscles. If too many carbohydrates

are consumed, the excess glucose is converted to fat and stored throughout the body (essentially like an internal food storage). Common examples of non-structural carbohydrates in a horse’s diet include starch from grain (oats, corn, barley, etc.) and molasses.

Sugar in Hay and Pasture

We’d all love to completely eliminate non-structural carbs in our horse’s diet. Sadly, there’s no magic miracle pill for this. All horses require forage and/or pasture to survive. As we mentioned, fibrous carbohydrates are essential for your horse’s digestive system to function properly. While forage or pasture grass contains structural carbohydrates (fiber), they also contain non-structural carbohydrates (sugar and starch). There is a secret to minimize the amount of sugar your forage or pasture grass contains. Plants contain more sugar after photosynthesis. However, for a plant to start photosynthesis, it needs sunlight. By cutting hay very early in the morning hours, the amount of sugar it contains can be reduced. If you allow your horses to eat pasture grass, have them graze early in the morning when the sugar content in the grass is at its lowest. If you’ve already purchased hay, you can reduce its sugar content by soaking it in water prior to feeding it to your horse.

Cushing’s Disease

Currently researchers believe there are some diseases that could be influenced by non-structural carbs

in a horse’s diet. This month we’ll be looking at Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s disease is a problem that generally shows up in older horses. It’s caused by a tumor in the horse’s pituitary, a gland located near the base of their brain. Two recognized complications of Cushing’s are laminitis and insulin resistance. Since insulin is required to clear the blood of high amounts of glucose following a meal, diets high in nonstructural carbohydrate (sugar) may make diabetes mellitus worse and increase the risk of laminitis in horses with Cushing’s. Because of this, veterinarians and nutritionists will often recommend reducing the amount of non-structural carbohydrates in the diet of a horse with Cushing’s, laminitis and insulin resistance.

What Can I do?

As we’ve learned, all carbohydrates are not the same. Structural carbohydrates are still essential for your horse’s digestive system to function properly. It’s still recommended that your horse receives a minimum of 1.5% of their body weight per day in dry forage. However, there are steps to reducing the amount of non-structural carbohydrates (sugar) in your horse’s diet. Consider eliminating grains, soaking hay prior to feeding and selecting forage known to have a lower non-structural carbohydrate content. Here at Standlee, we recommend our high-quality Beet Pulp Pellets and Beet Pulp Shreds as a great source of structural carbohydrates (fiber).

Dr. Nelson grew up in southern California and graduated as valedictorian of his college at Brigham Young University. He completed his doctorate of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, followed by training in general surgery and urologic residency at UC Davis. Roscoe S. Nelson, MD

DOES GETTING OLDER HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THIS? As our bodies age, the amount of testosterone produced decreases, resulting in a number of symptoms, including: brain fog, anxiety, irritability, depression, loss of muscle, fatigue, inflammation, weight gain, memory loss, insomnia, low libido and low energy. Although many physicians simply dismiss these symptoms as part of the aging process, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can be used to treat and even reverse these symptoms by restoring your hormone levels to normal ranges.

IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

A simple blood test can help con rm whether BHRT can help you regain your health and vitality. Once your hormone levels are determined, we can identify the amount of testosterone your body needs and address the benefits and risks of BHRT for your situation.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

While traditional hormone therapy has been around for a long time, BHRT pellet implantation is the most convenient, efficient method available. With BHRT, pellets of compressed hormone powder are inserted under your skin, providing a steady dose of bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream via circulation. This regulated delivery mimics your body’s natural processes and avoids the roller coaster-like uctuation of hormones experienced with oral hormone pills or topical creams. Patients receiving BHRT can expect to feel relief from symptoms as early as one week after implantation, and each pellet lasts for 3 to 6 months.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes, bio-identical hormones are a safer alternative than traditional synthetic hormones. Why? When developing synthetic hormones, pharmaceutical companies intentionally alter the molecular structure of the hormones so they can patent the product. These modifications cause side effects and health risks that can be more damaging than the original symptoms. By contrast, bio-identical hormones are molecularly identical to hormones produced naturally by your body, making BHRT the safest, most natural way to manage hormone deficiencies. The side effects of bio-identical hormones are mild and easily managed by dose adjustment. BHRT may also offer long-term health benefits; bio-identical hormones restore the protective benefits originally provided by your naturally occurring hormones, such as a reduced risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and breast cancer.

BRT IN WOMEN?

Conventional wisdom has designated testosterone a “male” hormone, but in reality, a woman’s physiologic health is dependent on a steady supply of testosterone. In fact at a woman’s reproductive peak, she produces more testosterone than estrogen. As women age, however, their testosterone levels begin to decline. Because females are more sensitive to testosterone, a small drop in testosterone can have serious effects on a woman’s health, including increased in ammation and body fat, low libido, lethargy, a decrease in muscle mass and bone density, and problems regulating body temperature. BHRT can help reverse these menopausal symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life.

BRT IN MEN?

Beginning at age 30, a man’s body makes less testosterone. By age 50, many men experience a significant drop in testosterone known as “andropause” or male menopause. With this drop, many men begin to experience clear signs of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone can also cause an increase in abdominal fat, anemia, and in ammation, and a decline in muscle mass and bone density. These symptoms can be treated and even eliminated by normalizing testosterone levels. In addition, despite the claim that increased testosterone makes men angry or violent, testosterone has actually been shown to improve friendliness by decreasing irritability, nervousness, and fatigue.

Put those old straw bales to use this spring and start your vegetable garden out right. By Cari Klostermann,

The idea of having fresh vegetables on the table, grown from your very own garden, is intriguing to pretty much everyone. However, the idea of spending hours in the dirt, sweating bullets while you pull weeds and break your back tending to your garden is intriguing to very few. Gardening doesn’t have to be a chore. With a straw-bale garden, the amount of labor needed is significantly reduced, and the raised height makes it much easier on your back and joints. The best part about a straw-bale garden is it can be grown anywhere. If you live in an area that has poor soil quality, this is definitely the garden for you! Straw-bale gardening is a great alternative for people who: -Have poor soil quality -Are not interested in weeding and tilling soil -Cannot bend over -Have limited space for a garden Straw-bale gardening is just like any other form of container gardening, but the straw bale itself serves as the container. In this form of gardening, there is no dirt involved. If you have an older bale that never made it into your horse’s stall, you are ready to get to planting. But if you have a newer bale that has not been exposed to the elements, it will need to be conditioned.

Conditioning

When preparing straw bales for planting, conditioning takes about two weeks and should be done where you plan on growing your garden. Position the bale so that the long, skinny side with folded straw is facing downward and the long, skinny side with cut straw is facing upward. This is due to the fact that straw is hollow and you want the water to seep into the straw. When you first begin the process of conditioning your bale, it will become very hot, reaching temperatures up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It is very important to keep your bale wet throughout the process to prevent spontaneous combustion.

APRIL 2017

For the first three days, you want to completely drench your bale with water and make sure it stays nice and damp throughout the day. Over the next six days, you will want to help speed up the decomposition process by adding nitrogen. The easiest way to do this is with store-bought liquid fertilizer. Simply add a capful, or whatever the directions recommend, to some water and pour it onto your bale every day for six days, still making sure your bale stays damp throughout the day. On the 10th day, you will go back to just watering your bale on a daily basis. When your bale’s internal temperature is the same as the air temperature, you are ready to begin planting.

Ready to Plant

When it comes to selecting what to plant in your bale, you are free to choose anything that you would plant in a normal garden. However, try to stay away from taller plants such as tomatoes and corn, because it can become top heavy and pull your bale a part. We recommend planting some carrots that both you and your horse will enjoy. Use the same spacing between plants that you would in the ground. Simply remove some of the straw to create a hole, place in your plant, add a little potting soil around it, and fill in the rest of the hole with the straw you removed. Your bale will protect your plants from weeds and supply them with some nutrients, but it is important to fertilize and water on a regular basis. Never let your bale completely dry out or your plants will suffer. One of the benefits to straw-bale gardening is that you can use however many bales you want and arrange them as you please. You can also build boxes for your straw bale to sit in so they have a little more height and are easy to move, plus it’ll give a more refined look. For detailed instructions on how to build a base for your straw bale, check out BonniePlants.com. 1

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2017 – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced additional steps to keep the food supply safe for American families in light of the recent investigations of Brazil’s meat industry. While none of the slaughter or processing facilities implicated in the Brazilian scandal have shipped meat products to the United States, FSIS immediately instituted additional pathogen testing of all shipments of

raw beef and ready-to-eat products from Brazil upon hearing reports of the Brazilian investigation. FSIS has also increased its examination of all these products at ports-of-entry across the country. The agency will indefinitely maintain its 100% reinspection and pathogen testing of all lots of FSIS-regulated products imported from Brazil. “Keeping food safe for American

families is our top priority,” said Mike Young, Acting Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “FSIS has strengthened the existing safeguards that protect the American food supply as a precaution and is monitoring the Brazilian government’s investigation closely.” The FSIS import inspection system (including equivalence

determinations, in-country audits, and re-inspection processes) is designed to ensure that imported meat, poultry, and processed egg products are safe and wholesome. FSIS works closely with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to ensure that these products are safe before they enter the country. “FSIS will take any additional actions necessary to protect public health,” said Al Almanza, Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety. “It is our mission to keep the food on American dinner tables safe.” Although none of the establishments implicated in the Brazil scandal have shipped meat products to the United States, effective March 18, FSIS instituted 100% point-of-entry re-inspection of all Brazilian beef imported into the United States, including conducting product examination on 100% of the lots. This re-inspection includes 100% testing of beef trimmings from Brazil for Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, and non-O157 shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC). The 100% re-inspection also includes 100% testing of ready-to-eat products from Brazil for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. FSIS will take immediate action to refuse entry of product into the United States if there are findings of food safety concern.

Relay For Life Comes to Turf Paradise April 22 Luminaria Ceremony to remember those lost to cancer, as well as entertainment, before concluding with a Closing ceremony. The event begins at 12 p.m. by celebrating everyone affected by cancer. Whether someone is newly diagnosed or cancer-free for 10 years, survivors gather together for the crowd to cheer them on as they lead the first lap. Their strength is honored with each step they take. Because caring for others is such a selfless

act, the Caregiver lap follows. They often walk with the person they’ve supported through their cancer journey, and then Relay For Life has officially begun. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event. At 6:15 p.m., a Luminaria Ceremony will take place to honor loved ones lost to cancer. This

About the American Cancer Society:

Total is a pellet of alfalfa and bermuda hay with corn. The energy yield is approximately the same as an all alfalfa pallet. It has the advantage for a lower protein yield that may be beneficial for many classes of horses. An excellent feed for most classes of horses.

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 2 million volunteers saving lives in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 25 percent decline in the cancer death rate in the U.S. since 1991, driven by less smoking, better treatments, and earlier detection. We’re finding cures as the nation’s largest private, notfor-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings and more. For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, call us anytime, day or night, at (800) 227-2345 or visit cancer.org.

Relieve is a mixture of alfalfa and oat hay with an energy and protein yield similar to bermuda. The energy and protein value are ideal for many mature horses with a low energy requirement. This will require supplement energy for increase work or growth.

USDA Announces $6 Million to Aid FireAffected Farmers and Ranchers in Midwest WASHINGTON, March 21, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing the availability of more than $6 million in funding to implement practices that will help private farmers, ranchers and forest landowners affected by the wildfires blazing in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

“We have seen the devastating effects of these wildfires on agricultural operations and the funding announced today can help communities of farmers and ranchers start the process of recovery,” said Acting Deputy Agriculture Secretary Michael Young. “USDA is here to offer assistance, and I encourage producers who experienced losses to take full advantage of our financial and technical assistance to aid in their recovery efforts and alleviate part of the financial burden caused by these tragic events.” The funding, made available by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), will assist local producers as they begin to restore scorched grazing land, rebuild fencing, protect damaged watersheds, and implement various conservation measures to mitigate losses. 84

Polylast™ SurfaceGuard with Microban® Antimicrobial Technology When performance matters, safety and comfort are key! Whether it’s in your trailer, wash racks, aisle ways, or any other locations that your horses frequent, Polylast™ offers the best slip-resistant surface available. The Polylast™ cushioning effect absorbs 40% to 50% of the impact shock on your horse’s hooves, which means that even horses with hoof or leg soreness are more comfortable. Since your horses don’t have to strain to maintain their footing they can be more relaxed and ready to perform even better! No mats are used in a Polylast™ floored trailer so there are no mats to pull, clean and replace. Imagine never having to pull mats again! This porous surface allows fluids to flow through, and eliminates the need for any bedding, saving you time and money on bedding and labor. This also means your horses breathe cleaner air and stay cleaner.

I started installing Polylast at my “Almosta Ranch”, five years ago. It is in my stalls, wash racks, saddling areas, and hot walker. Polylast is durable, long lasting, looks great, and actually saves me time and money on cleaning and maintenance. I have never used a product that provides my horses with the comfort and safety of Polylast. My horses are better off because of Polylast, and yours can be too!

Hadley Barrett Passes Away at the Age of 87 The rodeo world lost a true icon of the sport and a dear friend of the WPRA on March 2, 2017 with the passing of rodeo announcer Hadley Barrett. He passed away at the age of 87 at the University Hospital in Denver, Colo., as a result of heart failure. Born Sept. 18, 1929, in North Platte, Neb., Barrett started his career as a contestant and formed his own dance band, but found his place in rodeo history behind the microphone. A PRCA member since 1965, Barrett has announced all of the big rodeos and a great number of the smaller ones across the country. He was named PRCA Announcer of the Year in 1983, 1985, 1989 and 2002 and won the WPRA Announcer of the Year award twice in 2001 and 2011. He worked five National Finals Rodeos (1968, 1976, 1979, 1983 and 2008) and the 1967, 2007 and 2010 National Finals Steer Roping, as well as called the action at the Canadian Finals seven times. He worked as an NFR television announcer from

He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1999. Barrett’s legacy was in his willingness to share his talent and experience with others. He was known for taking rookie announcers under his wing and sharing hardearned information. He had recently finished announcing the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 25.

Omaha, Neb. – Laura Graves and Verdades scored a personal best Grand Prix Freestyle of 85.307% to place second in the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final on Saturday. Kasey Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet and Steffen Peters and Rosamunde closed out the competition in the top 10. Isabell Werth (GER) and Weihegold OLD were the 2017 champions with a score of 90.704%, while Carl Hester (GBR) and Nip Tuck finished third with a score of 93.757%. Graves (Geneva, Fla.) and her own Verdades, a 2002 KWPN gelding, wowed the crowd with a fantastic freestyle full of artistic beauty and technically difficult elements. Two tempi changes on a curve followed by one tempi changes and lovely canter pirouettes mesmerized the home crowd. “I was really looking forward to

Laura Graves on the podium (Shannon Brinkman Photo) putting in a solid test today in the Final, knowing that we didn’t have the best of draws with all the big guns still to come in the class,” Graves said. “I’m super happy with my horse. He was awesome in that environment. He is known to be spooky, and he was just as steady as could be. It is a personal best score, and to do it here in Omaha, it feels great to have the crowd on their feet.” Despite Verdades’ spooky nature,

Graves felt that he was in his element in front of the home crowd. “They were cheering in parts of our test, and my horse was really enjoying it. Two years ago in Las Vegas, the crowd would cheer and he would spooky and get a little fast, and this year he was like, ‘Yeah, thanks guys!’ So it is awesome to be back with the same horse.” Perry-Glass (Orangevale, Calif.) had a strong performance in her debut at the Final with Diane Perry’s Goerklintgaards Dublet. She and the 2003 Danish Warmblood gelding finished on a high note despite bobbles in an extended trot movement and in the one-tempi changes. The pair received a score of 77.068% to finish in seventh place. “I am very happy [with our score]. This is his first time in the indoor; there is a huge crowd. I couldn’t ask for a better ride from him,” PerryGlass said. Peters (San Diego, Calif.) had a solid performance with Four Winds Farm’s Rosamunde in the one of the

Steffen Peters and Rosamunde (Shannon Brinkman Photo) biggest tests of the mare’s career. The 2007 Rheinlander mare handled the electric atmosphere well thanks to Peters’ guidance. They executed wonderful pirouettes and half-passes. Peters and Rosamunde collected a score of 75.879% to finish ninth. “She did great,” Peters said of “Rosie”. “It was a very difficult freestyle not just for an experienced Grand Prix horse but for a young one, so that she did as well as she did, I am super pleased with her.”

John Swales Wins 2017 World’s Greatest horseman Championship The 2017 National Reined Cow Horse Association World’s Greatest Horseman, held in conjunction with the Celebration of Champions in Fort Worth, Texas, attracted one of the largest, most unique set of entries in the event’s history. Thirty-six horse and rider combinations ran in an arduous quartet of preliminary events: herd work, rein work, steer stopping and fence work. They all craved one of the 10 available finals berths and a clean-slate shot at the title before a sellout crowd in the John Justin Arena on Saturday, February 18. A diverse assortment of riders joined the quest for the $35,000 championship paycheck, part of a total $138,000 payout. The overall purse was up 42 percent over 2016, thanks to a 33 percent growth in entries and a $25,000 boost in added money from the World’s Greatest Horseman presenting sponsor, DT Horses. When Canadian professional John Swales, of Millarville, Alberta, guided Heza Diamond Spark (Diamond J Star x Sheza Shinette x Shining Spark), to the World’s Greatest Horseman Championship, he became the first non-American rider to win the title. Heza Diamond Spark is a 2005 stallion owned by Jesse and Elyse Thomson of 7P Ranch, High River, Alberta, Canada. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It’s pretty unreal,” Swales said, immediately following the win. The tight-knit Canadian reined cow horse community claimed Swales’ triumph as further validation that their country’s horses and trainers belong among the NRCHA elite. “It went as planned. It’s fantastic,” Jesse Thomson said. “It should open some eyes that Canada does have some nice horses, and some good horsemen, kicking around up here.” Jesse and Elyse Thomson bought their World’s Greatest champion horse in a somewhat unlikely way: through public auction. They had wanted to own “Sting” for years, and when previous owner, Dr. Michael Garver, was phasing out of the horse business, he consigned the stallion to the February 2014 Billings Livestock Commission Horse Sale in Billings, Montana. The Thomsons were ready to snatch him up, paid a sale-topping $45,000, and promptly put Heza Diamond Spark to work, under saddle and in the breeding shed. “We had watched this horse his whole life. He was always a superstar, every- where we had seen him,”

Thomson, a professional reined cow horse trainer, said. “When you watch that horse, any- body will tell you, he’s got a presence about him, whether it be roping or showing or just standing in the barn. What ride him, that’s what he makes you feel like,” Thomson said. “He’s 14.2, but it feels like you’re on a mountain.”

If Thomson’s other career as a film and TV stunt performer and animal wrangler had not interfered, he likely would have been the one riding Heza Diamond Spark in Fort Worth. “I darn sure would have loved to show him myself, but I’ve been in the movie business my whole life. I got a good gig last summer, I couldn’t turn it down, and I just couldn’t commit to show- ing,” he said. Thomson gave up his 2016 futurity prospects to other trainers, and recruited his friend Swales to show Sting. After squeaking into the finals by a scant half-point, Swales and Sting had a rocky start in front of the World’s Greatest Horseman sold-out crowd in Fort Worth. They were first to work in the herd, scoring a lackluster 207, which put them in eighth place and 14 points off the high score, a 221 by Jay McLaughlin and Blind Sided. But Swales knew he was extremely well mounted on a horse that could shine in the next three events. The began making a comeback in the next event, the rein work, where they earned the high score, a 222.5. This moved them in to fourth place after two events with a 429.5 composite. They still had plenty of ground to make up, as McLaughlin and Blind Sided maintained the lead with a 438. Next was the steer stopping, with McLaughlin and Blind Sided first in the draw. McLaughlin’s loop was true for a clean catch, but the momentum was sucked out of his run as the steer quit on its own, before Blind Sided could go to the ground and stop it.

John Swales The judges awarded him another steer and a chance to start over. Although McLaughlin made a textbook run on the second try, a bro- ken barrier penalty, five points per judge, took what would have been a 225 score down to a 210. Swales and Sting, second in the draw, had an identical experience. Their steer also hit the brakes too soon, and they also received a second animal, which they roped in credit-earning fashion for a 218. With three events down, Swales still clung to fourth place. He was nine points behind NRCHA Million Dollar Rider and past World’s

Greatest Horseman Boyd Rice, who, with Royal Smart Fletch, had made a big 221.5 in the rein work and a 219 in the steer stopping, to become the composite leader heading into the fence work. Rice was number two in the fence draw and, until his second turn on the cow, appeared on point to win another World’s Greatest Horseman title. But a tiny error coming out of the second turn resulted in loss of control, and his 204 score left the door wide open for another finalist to make a big run and claim the lead. It happened minutes later, when the fourth horse to work, and the second in the composite, Tommy Boon, shown by Luke Jones, earned a 218.5 with a scorching-fast run. Jones moved into first place, with an 869.5 composite. Swales was seventh in the draw, and needed at least a 222 score to win. In the dim, orange-tinted light behind the back gate, he tried to steady himself despite the deafening crowd noise and intense energy. “It was pretty crazy. It’s hard not to get super, super, super nervous. It made a person try a little harder, I guess,” he said, adding that his plan was to “try to go down the fence with a lot of cow, and hope we can handle it.” They boxed only briefly before heading down the fence. The steer shoved hard on Sting’s right shoulder the whole way, forcing him well off the fence, but the gritty stallion executed two turns in the open, then made a controlled set of circles, first right, then left.

Legislation to Eliminate Soring Introduced in the House

On March 30, 2017, Representatives Ted Yoho (RFL) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR) re- introduced the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act of 2015 (HR 1847) (PAST Act) in the House of Representatives. The bill is intended to strengthen the Horse Protection Act (HPA) and prevent the soring of Tennessee Walking Horses, Racking Horses, and Spotted Saddle Horses. The bill is identical to the bill introduced last

Congress and is supported by the American Horse Council and most national horse show organizations. Soring is an abusive practice used by some to train Tennessee Walking Horses, Spotted Saddle Horses, and Racking Horses. It usually involves the use of action devices, chemicals, pads, wedges or other practices to cause pain in the horse’s forelegs and produce an accentuated show gait for competition. Despite the existence of a federal ban on soring for over forty years, this cruel practice continues in

some segments of the walking horse industry. The PAST act would amend the HPA to prohibit a Tennessee Walking Horse, a Racking Horse, or

a Spotted Saddle Horse from being shown, exhibited, or auctioned with an “action device,” or “a weighted shoe, pad, wedge, hoof band or other device or material” if it is constructed to artificially alter the gait of the horse and is not strictly protective or therapeutic. These new prohibitions would not apply to other breeds that do not have a history of soring. The legislation would also increase fines and penalties for violations, including the potential for a lifetime ban for repeat offenders. The bill would create a new licensing process for horse show inspectors, eliminating the current often criticized designated qualified persons (DQPs) program. The bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to train, license and appoint new independent inspectors for shows and other HPA-regulated activities that wish to hire an inspector. Licensed or accredited veterinarians would be given preference for these positions. The decision to hire and cost of an inspector would still reside with the management of a show, sale or auction. Many national horse show organizations have endorsed the PAST Act including; The American Horse Council The American Quarter Horse Association The American Association of Equine Practitioners The American Paint Horse Association The U.S. Equestrian Federation The American Morgan Horse Association The Pinto Horse Association of America The Arabian Horse Association The American Saddlebred Horse Association The United Professional Horsemen’s Association The Appaloosa Horse Club

Many state and local horse organizations also support the bill. The bill has broad bipartisan support and already has over 208 co-sponsors. Various efforts have been made since enactment of the HPA forty years ago to stop the soring of horses and they have not worked. This bill is focused on the problem it is intended to solve and does not adversely affect other segments of the show industry that are not soring horses and have no history of soring horses.

AZCHA Changing the Sport of Cutting

By Elaina Ross

At the Costume Bridless cutting event hosted by the Arizona Cutting Horse Association (AZCHA), you might just get lucky enough to see Donald Trump on the back of a cutting horse. Or even Captain America. Okay, not the real Donald Trump or the real Captain America, but you will see some passionate cutters dressed in costume, as if it were Halloween. But this event occurs six months from October, so one might wonder why these cutters are dressing in costume to participate in a bridless event. “It’s to raise money for local charities,” says Dawn Chapman, president of AZCHA. “Last year’s event raised $15,000 for a local charity and we anticipate raising the same amount this year.” The proceeds for the event, which will take place on Saturday, April 8, will go to Horses Help, a local non-profit that uses horses to help with the development of

Christine King Reytheon independence and self-esteem for youth with disabilities. “It’s an amazing cause that really gets the community involved. And people have a lot of fun!” And “fun” is the key word that was mentioned many times by members and participants of AZCHA. The organization focuses on the community that is built through the sport of cutting. “We try to nurture new segments of the cutting population, like youth and the lower-level rider who may be intimidated by participating in the larger events,” explains

show secretary, Lindsey Mills. In April, AZCHA will host its Novice Challenge, which is geared specifically to that lower-level rider. “We have a really proven formula and excellent schedule with this event, along with an outstanding sponsor base,” says Mills. The Novice Challenge is held once a year on the closing Sunday of the four-day event in which any rider on any horse can compete. “We get huge herds for that,” explains Chapman. “It’s great because it gives a beginner rider a chance to try their hand at cutting, which usually leads to people wanting to buy a horse and begin their lifetime passion. They don’t feel the pressure that they might feel at one of the bigger shows.” (AZCHA has six larger shows in October, November, January, two in February, and April.) “Those six shows are usually really big, so this is a great way to get people in without them feeling nervous or intimidated to participate.” One key aspect of AZCHA event is the Rerun Riot. This segment is sponsored by Jerry and Parri Longworth of Roo-Hide Saddlery, in which the winner of each class receives a brand new saddle. This coming event will mark the seventh anniversary of this event. The year-end saddle awards go to the winners of the $15,000 Am, $35,000 Non Pro and the $2,000 Limit Rider and has proven to be a huge success in attracting new cutters to the sport in Arizona. Chapman has a personal motto that she has held dear to hear for the over two decades in which she has been a part of AZCHA. “If you can show and be successful in Arizona, you can be competitive anywhere.” She holds true to this and states that the basic fact that many of the NCHA top standings at the world level are from Arizona. “Fully one third of the top 15 NCHA riders from last year in the 2k, 15k, 35k, and even the 50 Amateur are from the west coast. And that’s because of our weekend

APRIL 2017

Donald Trump shows.” “It really starts with the trainers,” says Chapman. “Our trainers are more weighted in the Amateur and Non-Pro rather than the big aged events. So the question is how do you get your clients to get on board and go to shows? Well, that starts with the trainers asking the question, what’s your goal?” Chapman further indicated that Arizona is on the forefront of rearranging the general schedule format for two arenas for its events allowing competitors in the novice and amateur classes to participate earlier in the day, generally no later than 4 or 5 pm. “In a lot of the bigger events, riders in these classes in other states sort of feel neglected, since they often don’t get to ride until much later in the evening. At our events, they can compete during the day and still get home in time to have dinner with their families or join the rest of their barn for a BBQ at the RV area.” This attention to timeframe has helped to increase the number of entries into the AZCHA events, which then helps the trainers increase their clientele base. Chapman spoke of one trainer who relocated to Arizona two years ago and now brings as many as 25 horses to each event. “Arizona has been paving the way in cutting and this is illustrated by the phenomenal increase in our numbers, both in participation and in the people who hire the trainers,” she points out. It is not uncommon for our trainers to bring anywhere from 20 to 45 horses to the show. That, Dawn said, is a measure of the success of the AzCHA program.

Ann Fonck and Shiners Voodoo score big to win the NRHA European Open Futurity

Ann Fonck Cremona, April 1 – As the lights went out in the CremonaFiere Arena, the 2017 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) European Open Futurity finalists wrote yet another page of history. It took a 222 or higher to make it in the final top ten Level (L)4 rankings and a 231 to claim the L4 Open Futurity Championship. Draw 21 in a field of 25 finalists in the second section of the European Futurity Open finals, multiple past NRHA Open and Reserve Open World Champion Ann Fonck kept

the reining fans in Cremona glued to their seats from the moment she burst in the pen riding Shiners Voodoo (Shiners Voodoo Dr x BR China Rose) for owner Kimberly Wegner. The show went on as Fonck and the flashy palomino performed fast and precise spins and controlled circles. The duo closed their run with three deep stops that set the dirt – and the +1’s – flying! “I am thrilled and cannot believe how good my horse was for me tonight,” said Ann about the stallion she won both the German Breeders and French 3-year-old Futurity on last year. “I know how talented he is and when I rode in the pen I knew that he was capable of winning but I never thought that we would earn such a big score! I have to give credit to my husband, Bernard (Fonck) for helping me out during this week and to our incredible team that worked endless hours behind the scenes…I don’t know how they did it!”

For Immediate Release – Oklahoma City, Okla. – March 30, 2017 – The Reining Horse Foundation and the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) are partnering to offer a $2,500 college scholarship benefiting the competitor marking the highest reining score in reined cow horse at the 2017 National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR), July 17-23 in Gillette, Wyo. Winning the inaugural Reining Horse Foundation scholarship presented at the 2016 National High School Finals Rodeo was Jayde Atkins. In 2017, a $2,500 scholarship will be awarded again to the contestant marking the highest score in reining during the reined cow horse event at the NHSFR. Photo by Stephanie Duquette

Jayde Atkins in reining during the reined cow horse event at the NHSFR. The collaboration led to the inaugural award presented in 2016 to Jayde Atkins of Broken Bow, Neb., riding the 2003 gelding Sonitas Last Dual (Dualin Jewels x Sonitas Ann x Sonitas Last). Atkins bested a field of 112 reined cow horse contestants to win the national championship. She also received the prestigious Morrison bronze courtesy of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA). In late 2014, the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) began offering reined cow horse as an event.

Bernard Fonck Shiners Voodoo was bred by Patricia Blankeney Creson and nominated by Reto Erdin. Prior to the European Futurity, the talented stallion had already collected $12,198 to his name with Ann Fonck in the saddle. On Saturday night, he added $17,551 to his LTE. Early in the draw, NRHA Million Dollar Rider and multiple past NRHA Open World Champion Bernard Fonck had set the bar aboard Missedouttinseltown (Hollywoodstinseltown x Miss Sliding Peppy) owned by Golden Paint Ranch. The pair had set the stands on fire with their powerful run paid back by the judges with a 228.5 which earned them the reserve championship as well as $14.559. In the past edition of the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA) Futurity the sorrel stallion, with Fonck in the saddle, had tied for third place brining his earnings to $15,485. Past NRHA Intermediate Open World Champion Guglielmo Fontana topped both the L4 and L3 qualifiers riding Whiz Wild West (Spark N Whiz x West Coast Oak) owned by Luga Quarter Horses bred and nominated by Mattia Camisi. In the clean-slate finals, the bay gelding rode Fontana to a 226 and the L3 European Futurity Open title. “I don’t believe I’ve ever ridden a horse as talented as Whiz Wild West,” said the NRHA Professional following the awards presentation. “He was absolutely incredible tonight and it was an honor for me to place behind two incredible champions – Bernard and Ann Fonck – who I worked for for three years.” Fontana took home a paycheck worth $21,121 for his L3 win and for placing third in the L4. Second place honors in this

division with a 222.5 score went to Canadian NRHA Professional Morey Fisk, now based in Mooslargue France, riding Whiz My Freckles (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Dun Lost My Freckles), a mare owned by Peter Arnet, bred and nominated by Lewisville Development, LP. Fisk, who is a three-time NRHA European L4 Open Futurity champion, added $11,880 to his LTE amounting to $337,000 prior to coming to Cremona. Winning the title in the L2 divison was Italian NRHA Professional Silvia Venezia who posted a 220 riding Gunnerine (Hollywood Gun Dunnit x E Harmony Dot Com), a mare owned bred and nominated by Teresa Rosati. “I’ve had this sweet mare in training since she was a 2-year-old and I broke and trained her myself,” said Venezia. “I am thrilled with how she performed tonight and even though I knew we could achieve this result, until it’s over you never know.” Co-reserve honors in the L2 – with a 217.5 went to NRHA Professional Nicola Cordioli of Italy riding Unwhizzjable (Star Spangled Whiz x Late Little Jaba), a mare owned by Andrea Pengo, bred and nominated by Silvia Sgaggio. NRHA Professional Matteo Cuniglio rode RS Canaletto Jac (RS Great Jac Feona x RS Red Moon Olena), a mare owned bred and nominated by Claudio Risso, to first place honors in the L1 and to coreserve honors in the L2 division. “I started riding this mare in December last year and immediately liked her,” said the Italian rider who won the L1 Open qualifier in Cremona. “We get along really well and she was good for me from day one. This is my first European Futurity title and I couldn’t be any happier.” Earning the L1 European Open Futurity was German NRHA Professional Jeffrey-Thomas Touroute who made it back to the finals through the consolation riding Rowdys Smart Diamond (Hollywood Yankee Kid x GH Redskin Lady), a stallion owned bred and nominated by Hannes Kirchberger. The NRHA European Futurity, held for the very first time in Italy after leaving the historical venue in Kreuth, Germany, after eight years, officially closed with the Open finals which showcased an incredibly high level of competition.

A Louisiana veterinarian has been charged with engaging in a scheme to influence the outcome of horse races by illegally treating the animals with a synthetic version of a drug known as “frog juice,” according to a recent news report from the Associated Press.

According to the report, the federal indictment accuses the veterinarian, Kyle James Hebert, DVM, of providing trainers with syringes of dermorphin, an opioid roughly 30 times more potent than morphine that is naturally secreted by tree frogs native to South America, to inject the painkiller in at least four horses that compete at Louisiana racetracks. The indictment, returned February 9 by a grand jury in the Western District of Louisiana, says Hebert told trainers that the mislabeled drug would make the horses “focus” and run faster. The report notes that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t approved any drug containing dermorphin for use in humans or animals. Hebert’s practice, Southern Equine Sports Medicine, operates veterinary clinics in Lake Charles and Sunset in the state of Louisiana. The indictment charges him and an Omaha, Nebraskabased company, Kohll’s Pharmacy & Healthcare Inc., with conspiracy, according to the AP report. Heert is licensed to practice veterinary medicine at racetracks by the Louisiana State Racing Commission. In 2012, the commission sanctioned nine trainers whose horses tested positive for dermorphin, according to the report. The indictment says Hebert purchased approximately $25,000 worth of the mislabeled drug from Kohll’s between November 2010 and May 2012. Kohll’s invoices falsely identified the drug as “d-peptide,” a fictitious name, according to the indictment. One of the sanctioned trainers told the commission that Hebert gave

APRIL 2017

drugs to his horses and had claimed they were “human herbs that would boost metabolism and help them breathe a bit,” according to a TimesPicayune report in September of that year. Charles Gardiner, the commission’s executive director, says he believes the indictment secured by U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley’s office marks the first criminal charges over the use of dermorphin at Louisiana racetracks. Gardiner says 11 horses linked to the nine trainers tested positive for the drug. He calls it “the most serious offenses in the history of Louisiana racing,” according to the report. “It endangered the horses, it affected the outcome of races and it defrauded the wagering public,” Gardiner says in the report. Hebert is accused of falsifying invoices for his veterinary services to conceal that the drugs were provided to trainers on race days, according to the report. Racing commission regulations prohibit anyone from injecting any substance into a horse within four hours of a race. The indictment says Hebert and his employees instructed trainers to perform injections one hour before race time. Steven Barker, PhD, MVSc, a professor emeritus from Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, oversaw lab tests for dermorphin on samples collected from racing regulators in both Louisiana and Oklahoma, the report states. Barker says the use and concealment of performanceenhancing drugs has always been a “cat and mouse game” in the horse racing industry. But its rate of positive drug tests is low compared to “human athletic endeavors,” he says in the report. “The actual number of cases where there appears to be an obvious attempt to gain an advantage is very small, Barker says in the report.

41 Stakes Worth $7.3 Million on Del Mar’s 2017 Summer Schedule

The summer of 2017 will see Del Mar offer 41 stakes races worth $7.3 million for its horsemen during a 36-day season that will be the 78th for the iconic track founded in 1937 by Bing Crosby and a crew of his Hollywood pals. Racing alongside the blue Pacific will begin on Wednesday, July 19 and move forward to Labor Day, September 4 with its richest and most prestigious afternoon coming on Saturday, August 19 when the $1,000,000 TVG Pacific Classic will be presented for the 27th time as the highlight of a stakes-filled card. The robust Del Mar stakes program is expected to take on extra significance this year with the 34th edition of the Breeders’ Cup headed to the seaside track for the first time as part of its fall session. Horsemen from around the country are expected to take advantage of the summer races as likely “preps” for their runners who are being pointed for any of the 13 championship events that will be held on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4. Overall, the track will offer 33 “advertised” stakes carrying purses from $100,000 to $1,000,000, as well as eight “overnight” stakes, each worth $75,000. The advertised stakes include 21 graded events – six of them Grade Is (including the TVG Pacific Classic), 11 at Grade II and four at Grade III. The Classic, run at a mile and a quarter for 3-year-olds and up,

118

was listed as the second-best race in the world last year in the Longines’ awards presented by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities after Horse of the Year California Chrome beat a stellar lineup in handy fashion. This year it will headline a stakes tripleheader afternoon that also will offer the Grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks and the Grade II, $250,000 Del Mar Handicap. The Oaks, for 3-year-old fillies, is run at nine furlongs, while the Handicap, an 11-furlong marathon, is for 3-yearolds and up. Both of those races will be contested over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Nineteen of the stakes will be run on the grass with the other 22 on the main track. The turf course was expanded and totally replaced prior to the 2014 season, while the main track was returned to dirt (after an eight-year run with the synthetic Polytrack) in 2015.

“For the most part, this is the traditional Del Mar stakes schedule that’s been a popular presentation for us for the last decade,” said the track’s racing secretary, David Jerkens. “Our horsemen know it and like it; our fans do, too. It’s a case of a perfect racetrack axiom: you stick with a winner.” The track’s executive vice president for racing, Tom Robbins, found additional reasons to hail the rich stakes schedule.

“We’ve got the only $1-million race in the west for older horses in the TVG Pacific Classic,” he said. “We’ve got a race that’s showcased the Kentucky Derby winner in three of the last four years in the Del Mar Futurity. And we’ve got a series of races in all our categories that flow beautifully during our meet and then project forward to the Breeders’ Cup championship events, which, of course, we have right here this year.” As in previous summer seasons, five of Del Mar’s key stakes have been scheduled as Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races, meaning a

APRIL 2017

victory in any of them will guarantee the winning horse an entry – with all fees paid – in a corresponding Breeders’ Cup divisional race, along with a travel bonus if the horse is based outside California. One of the “Win and You’re In” races is the TVG Pacific Classic, which guarantees admission to the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Besides the $600,000 winner’s share of the purse, the victorious TVG Pacific Classic horse also has his or her pre-entry and entry fees to the BC Classic covered – a savings of $150,000 – as well as a travel bonus – either $10,000 (national) or $40,000 (international) – granted to a Breeders’ Cup horse (coming from outside California) for the capstone event of the Breeders’ Cup programs. Besides the TVG Pacific Classic, Del Mar’s other stakes with direct Breeders’ Cup ties are the $300,000, Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes on Saturday, July 29 (guaranteeing admission to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint); $300,000, Grade I Clement L. Hirsch Stakes on Sunday, July 30 (BC Distaff); the Del Mar Handicap (BC Turf), and the Grade II, $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at seven furlongs on Saturday, August 26 (BC Dirt Mile). Del Mar will present its two championship races for 2-year-old on its Labor Day weekend. The pair of Grade I headliners – the Del Mar Debutante for fillies on Saturday, September 2 and the Del Mar Futurity on closing day, Monday, September 4 – are run at seven furlongs and carry purses of $300,000. Del Mar has returned to its traditional Wednesday opening this year and will race five-days-per-week (Wednesday through Sunday) for the entire summer, finishing with a sixday week concluding on the Labor Day Monday holiday.

World Champion Arrogate returns to CA after $10 million Dubai Cup Victory

“He’ll run in the Pacific Classic (Grade I, $1 million at Del Mar on Aug. 19) and then the Breeders’ Cup Classic down there (Nov. 4)…He might run one time before that.” Included amongst a gaggle of

ABR, CLSS, CRS, GRI, E-Pro, SFR

media and track officials at Baffert’s Barn 5 was Arrogate’s Hall of Fame jockey, “Big Money” Mike Smith. “This is exciting, I’ve been praying since the race was over to get him back home,” said Smith. “He had so much turbulence in the race, he didn’t need any in the air,” he said in reference to the rough start Arrogate was able to overcome in Dubai. “He’s like Muhammed Ali. He’s the best in the world!” And who could argue that point? Following his maiden win in his second start here on June 5, the grey son of Unbridled’s Song has now rattled off six consecutive wins, his last four in Grade I stakes; a record setting 13 ½ length win in the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 27, the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Nov. 5, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28 and the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 25. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, 4-year-old Arrogate has now won seven of his eight starts and he’s now North America’s all-time leading money earner, with $17,084,600.

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 1, 2017)– Bob Baffert’s world champion Arrogate returned to his Santa Anita base at 12:12 p.m. looking amazingly fresh, considering he’d just come out of quarantine at Los Angeles International Airport following a roughly 20,000 mile round trip trek to Dubai, which resulted in a sensational 2 ¼ length win in last Saturday’s $10 million Dubai World Cup. “I think we’ll look at the Gold Cup,” joked Baffert, in reference to the Grade I Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 27. “He’s a little fresh. We’ll back off of him for about 30 days…We’ll train him, but he won’t breeze for 30 days… He tells us what he wants to do… We’ll have to do something with him.

On March 30, 2017 Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) re-introduced the Race Horse Cost Recovery Act (H.R. 1804) and the Equine Tax Parity Act (H.R. 1805). The Race Horse Cost Recovery Act would permanently place all race horses in the three-year category for tax depreciation purposes. A 2008 provision that temporarily put race horses in the three year category expired at the end of 2016. The Equine Tax Parity Act would make horses eligible for capital gains treatment after 12 months, rather than 24, similar to other business assets. The American Horse Council supports both of these bills. Congressman Barr also introduced the Race Horse Expensing Certainty Act (H.R. 1806), the bill would provide extra clarity that racehorses are eligible for the Section 179 business expense deduction. All horses purchased and placed in service by a business are currently eligible for the Section 179 deduction and the bill would not change this.

Equine Tax Bills Introduced

Race Horse Cost Recovery Act

The 2008 Farm Bill included language that allowed all race horses to be depreciated over three years, regardless of their age when placed in service. Prior to then, race horses were depreciated over seven years if placed in service before they turned two. Horses placed in service after two (24 months from foaling date), could be depreciated over three years. A horse is generally deemed to be placed in service when it begins training, which is usually at the end of its yearling year. This change to the tax code was extended several times, but expired at the end of 2016. The Race Horse Cost Recovery Act would permanently make all race horses eligible for three year depreciation. Depreciation is a means of recovering the cost of property, including horses, used in a business through deductions of portions of the horse’s cost over a period of years. Generally, the recovery period approximates the estimated useful life or economic life of the property. The horse industry believes a three year deprecation schedule more accurately reflects the actual time a horse will be

WICKENBURG

raced and a seven year deprecation period unfairly penalizes the horse industry. Permanently placing all race horses in the three year depreciation category would be of great benefit to the horse industry and is supported by the AHC.

Equine Tax Parity Act

The Equine Tax Parity Act (H.R. 3672) would make horses eligible for capital gains treatment after 12 months, rather than 24, similar to other business assets. Under the current federal tax code, gains from sales by individuals of property used in a trade or business, including horses, qualify for longterm capital gains and are subject to the maximum capital gains tax rate of 15% for taxpayers earning less than $450,000 or 20% for those earning more. Since the individual income tax rate can go as high as 39.6%, the lower rate is a real advantage. Horses held for breeding, racing, showing or draft purposes qualify for the capital gains rates only if they are held for 24 months. All other business assets (except cattle) qualify if held for 12 months.

The Equine Tax Parity Act would end this discriminatory treatment of horses under the tax code and allow horse owners to enjoy the reduced rate upon sale after holding a horse for 12 months. For most owners and breeders shortening the capital gains holding period to 12 months should be a benefit. Reducing the holding period by half would give many horse owners and breeders more flexibility to sell and market their horses. It would mean that every sale of a horse which is held for at least 12 months will qualify as a capital gain or loss unless that horse is held primarily for sale. The AHC supports this bill.

The Race Horse Expensing Certainty Act

The Section 179 business expense deduction allows any business, including any horse business, to immediately depreciate up to $500,000 of the cost of any investment in business assets, including horses. The deduction is reduced dollar-for-dollar once investment in all one’s business activities hit $2 million. The bill would provide extra clarity that racehorses are eligible for the Section 179 business expense deduction.
