USTRC Sold to Active Interest Media Owners of the World Series of Team Roping
The United States Team Roping Championships has been purchased by Active Interest Media (AIM) who also owns the World Series of Team Roping. We are confident this new partnership will move the team roping industry into the next generation. We sincerely appreciate your participation in the United States Team Roping Championships through the years and look forward
to increasing your member value as we work to build new and exciting events. In the next few weeks it is possible that communications could be disrupted as we attempt to transition locations and employees. The National High School Rodeo Association is one of the fastest growing youth organizations, with an annual membership of approximately 12,500 students from 42 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia. The Association sanctions over 1,800 rodeos each year. The NHSRA is governed by a national Board of Directors, which consists of one member from each state or province. Staff members at the national headquarters in Denver, Colorado handle the day-to-day operations. Each year, the NHSRA produces the two elite youth rodeo events in the world – The National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) and the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR). The NHSFR is the “World’s Largest Rodeo,” featuring approximately 1,500 contestants from across the United States, Canada and Australia. Athletes vie for national titles, assorted prizes and their share of thousands of dollars in college scholarships. Action at the event is non-stop, with rodeo performances being conducted twice each day. The top-twenty contestants in each event then advance to a final round of competition to determine who will walk away with the coveted championship buckles. Boys events at the NHSFR include Bareback Riding, Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, and Cutting. Girl’s events include Breakaway Roping, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Cutting, Team Roping, and the NHSRA Queen contest. Boys and girls compete together in Team Roping, but are separate in all other events.

Bowen holds on for Prescott victory
PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Bull rider Dustin Bowen was busy heading up and down the rodeo road July 4, when he received a present better than fireworks or hotdogs – a big check. The 26-year-old native of Fredericksburg, Pa., earned a $7,221 prize after his 83.5-point ride on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Sandi’s Dream held up for the victory at the June 28 through July 4 World’s Oldest Rodeo. “I rode during the first perf (June 28), and I was hoping that my score would hold up,” Bowen said. “That bull has been around forever, and they win on him a lot. Plus, I knew that Prescott is traditionally a rodeo where they don’t ride too many, so I was optimistic about it.” There aren’t many rodeos throughout the PRCA season that pay more than $7,000 for a oneheader, and it was just the jolt Bowen was looking for.
Dustin Bowen “It’s great to be able to win that amount of money for one ride,” he said. “Most of the year involves just getting small checks wherever you go – whether it’s $1,000 or $2,000 here or there – but being
able to grab that much money in Prescott that quick helps out so much.” Bowen, who now resides in Waller, Texas, entered the Cowboy Christmas run 12th in the world. The windfall in Prescott, coupled with some other large checks,

should put him firmly into the Top 10 of the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings. Bowen – who qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER in 2015 – has already surpassed his total money won from the 2016 season, in which he finished 29th in the world with $44,416. “Last season, at this time of the year, I had my shoulder come out at two separate times, and then tore up my bicep,” Bowen said of his 2016 woes. “I was riding really well last year, too, but those injuries pretty much ended my season.” Undeterred, Bowen has come roaring back in 2017 as he tries to make it back to Las Vegas this December. He won the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver in January, and then split the title at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery, Ala., in March.

New Mobile Vet Unit Comes to Town
“Darndest thing happened to me at the Chip last night. Had to compete with a horse to get a drink. Only in Cave Creek! Gotta love it!”
Cave Creek Bulletin Board
By Sandy Antilla What’s sizzling this summer? Besides the weather.. I mean. We now have our own Mobile Veterinary Care for the dogs and cats in our area. Veterinary Partners now has a full service van equipped and ready to care for our furry friends. Brad Dalrymple, lead veterinarian, attended Ross University and completed his clinicical Training at Purdue. He also worked with companion animals prior to practicing extensive emergency medicine at a critical care specialty hospital in Phoenix. Just think, If you have a cat that thinks going to the vet’s office is the worst idea you’ve ever had, just pickup your phone in the cool, comfort of your home, not to mention a non- stress atmosphere, and give him a call. Many dogs, especially the 80 pound kind, don’t take too kindly to a ride in a hot car only to end up at the dreaded vet’s office.. Now by picking up your phone, you relieve their stress, not to mention yours. Recently, I personally had a reason to call Brad over. My 15 year old Australian Shepherd, Andalei, was at the end of his stay with us. I can honestly say that Brad was the kindest gentlest person to ease Andalei out of his pain Brad is equipped to do preventive care, surgery, spay/neuter, dentals and x-rays and Internal Medicine just to name a few services We are very thankful to have Brad Dalrymple , his Equine veterinarian wife, Dr Nicole Tavel and his two little girls, now practicing in our area. When you see his brightly colored Veterinary Partners van going down the road, give them a welcoming wave! New clients are now receiving 20% off for all services. 480 848 9077….www.vetpartnersaz.com

DAVID MILLER (480) 540-4418 35
Schuster Smashes Earnings Record with Calgary Title
To hear Tiany Schuster tell the story, she is a “placer,” a barrel racer who frequently places in the money at the rodeos but doesn’t often win first. On a mission this season to earn her first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) held in Las Vegas each December, Schuster has doggedly hit the rodeo trail hoping to build a big lead to insulate herself from the cowgirls who do win first, particularly at the biggest venues with the most lucrative purses. While her humility is refreshing, especially in someone who has led the WPRA World standings since about the third week of the season with hardly a challenge, one may question her thinking when she talks about being challenged to win in high pressure situations. The Texas cowgirl has set the professional rodeo world on fire this season, winning more than $100,000 in the winter alone and keeping the same self-deprecating sense of humor and hard working attitude the whole way. Of course, she’s won first at many rodeos this season, including several wins on the Wrangler Champions Challenge Tour, and she was among the leaders in money won over the Fourth of July holiday. Then came the Calgary Stampede . . . a chance to catch up for the rest of the field or for the leader to streak away thanks to the big payouts each day and the 36
monster $100,000 check written to the winner. Competing in her first Stampede, Schuster started slow while competing in Pool B. Her great horse Show Mance had a little trouble with the mud on her opening run, posting a run in the 19’s. But the pair rebounded, getting faster each day until their fourth and final run in pool competition when they shattered the arena record in the first ever 16-second run in Stampede Park at 16.99 seconds. With an new arena record to chase, the ladies of the WPRA hit the final weekend of the 2017 Calgary Stampede running fast with incredible runs across the board thanks to a phenomenal effort by the Calgary grounds crew. The field of 20 that had begun this adventure was about to be cut in half. Wild Card Saturday It all began on Saturday with the Wild Card Round. The 12 ladies who had not yet earned a spot in Showdown Sunday’s final rounds got one last chance to get out of Canada with some money in their Wranglers. Amberleigh Moore holds a share of the arena record at the WNFR aboard her awesome mare Paige; the duo showed their versatility on the WPRA standard
pattern in the huge Stampede Park arena, stopping the clock at 17.09 for the round win. 2015 WPRA Rookie of the Year Jackie Ganter made her second horse switch of the week, calling on Baby J for the last ditch attempt at the finals. Baby J delivered big, putting 17.12 on the scoreboard for the last spot in the finals. Showdown Sunday—Semi-Finals
Few rounds during the season can match Showdown Sunday for dramatic effect—it’s not just the huge crowd, the 100+ history of the Stampede or even the money. It’s often the once-in-a-lifetime chance to perform under those circumstances. Adding the pressure that the money counts for the WPRA World standings just adds to the fun. For cowgirls outside the top 15 in the current WPRA World standings—ladies like past Calgary champs Sherry Cervi and Lisa Lockhart and reigning Ram National Circuit Finals (RNCFR) champion Emily Miller—the final round in Calgary is a pot of gold to grab on their way to Las Vegas. With the pressure high, the first round began with California cowgirl Nellie Miller. Miller has had a great Stampede after accepting her invite just days before the Stampede began when reigning Calgary and WPRA World Champ Mary Burger was unable to attend. Riding her homegrown rising star Sister, Miller set the pace with a 17.23 second trip. Moore and Paige came
AUGUST 2017
next and were fast too, stopping the clock at 17.29 seconds. Ganter got a little close on the first can, taking a costly penalty. Stevi Hillman stepped up next. Her big bay horse Truck flew through the pattern, bringing the crowd to its feet with a 17.17 to take the lead. Kimmie Wall and Foxy followed next, with a long run to the first. A little extra room on the corners cost her on the clock as she ran a 17.74. Cervi eased down the long alleyway next, riding Stingray, the palomino mare who carried her to her last two WPRA World titles but who hadn’t made a run since last fall before arriving in Calgary. Though she fell a bit short on Sunday with a 17.68, her heart and try continue to inspire fans and fellow barrels racers alike. Wih six down, Schuster began to ease her big sorrel gelding to the gate. Focused and calm, she let off the brake and Show Mance began to eat away at the ground. When the clock flashed 17.17—identical to Hillman, the mark to hit for a shot in the Showdown jumped way up to 17.29 seconds, putting Moore on the bubble. Emily Miller and Pipewrench took their shot next, needing to be fast. The deceiving sorrel sped through the pattern in a flawless trip, recording a 17.21 to knock Moore out and put herself third with two still to run. Leading Canadian barrel racer Kirsty White had the hopes of the home crowd on her shoulders as she ran her mare Racey to the first barrel. One of three lefties in the finals, Racey made the first in good time but caught the second on the approach, ending her 2017 Stampede run. The final cowgirl to have a say about the Showdown round was Lisa Lockhart, the winner here two years ago who was staging a dramatic comeback since bringing her great horse Louie back from surgery following the 2016 WNFR. Making another picture perfect run, Louie and Lockhart raced across the line in 17.49, falling a bit short but, like Stingary, still earning the admiration of all. The Showdown round was set and for WPRA barrel racing fans, it was ironic to see that the final four here was nearly identical to the final four at the RNCFR held in Kissimmee back in April. Would Emily Miller capture another major title or would it go to the world leader, the other Miller or the red-hot Hillman?

Don Trout lost to Cancer
A gofundme account has been established to help Debbi Trout.
Larry Johnson feeling heartbroken at Mining Camp Restaurant Apache Junction, AZ. July 24
Noted Horse Show photographer Don Trout has taken horse show photos of three generations of my family and hundreds of other families in the country. He is part of the Horse show family for countless breeds and organizations. To say that Don and his wife Debbie have had a couple of rough years is an understatement. 2 car accidents including one that totaled their suburban and photo van was something they were trying to catch up from when Don got the diagnosis about his cancer spreading on the spinal column. The horse show communities have been sending thoughts and prayers their way all year but as Don has now passed away and Debbie is faced with the reality that her whole livelihood has stopped, it is time to do more. After conferring with Kerri Garber, who lives in Texas and is helping Debbie now, the family has come up with an amount to help Debbie with medical bills, living expenses and some outstanding expenses to deal with the situation without worrying about getting bills paid. Please help rally around a member of our family By donating what you can and sharing this site ! Thank you!
“Heartbreaking news this morning.... The Mining Camp Restaurant burned last night. My heart goes out to Vinton, Deborah and their entire staff. Apache Junction and the entire east valley lost an iconic gem that has existed in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains for over 55 years!

Miller Wins Coveted Silver Spurs in Reno Reno, Nevada—Every year the Reno Rodeo seems to encompass Father’s Day and there are always plenty of father-son stories to celebrate in professional rodeo. But the 2017 edition of the Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West produced a different twist on the tale, not a father-son story but rather a father-daughter story. Northern California cowgirl Nellie (Williams) Miller grew up in the sport, traveling around to watch her father Sam compete and jumping into
the sport herself at 12 years of age. She made her first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) in 2010 aboard Rebas Smokey Joe, aka Blue Duck, a horse her dad trained. After taking time off to start her own family—she has two daughters with husband James—Miller hit the ProRodeo scene again, riding another home-grown, Sam Williams trained roan horse, this one named Rafter W Minnie Reba and called Sister because she is a half-sister to Blue Duck.

Already ranked sixth in the WPRA World standings by the time the 2017 Reno Rodeo rolled around, Miller brought Sister to the party after the mare had taken several weeks rest coming into the big summer run, annually kicked off at Reno. Miller and Sister made a pair of super fast runs in the preliminary competition, winning the first go and placing fourth in round two to enter the Saturday finals ranked second in the average behind Sydni Blanchard but as the high money winner in the barrels to that point. The Reno Rodeo is two preliminary rounds for the 96 WPRA barrel racers entered, with each set of ladies competing twice in one day, once in the morning slack and again in the evening performance. After the final group competed on Friday, the field of 12 based on the two-run average time was set for the finals with 2012 WPRA World Champ Mary Walker and two-time WNFR qualifier Carley Richardson making their way into the finals on the final day of preliminary competition. The Championship Finals field included a number of bubble barrel racers, ladies just outside the top 15 in the WPRA World standings. As only the 15 high money winners earn a spot at the WNFR each year, each lady was hoping to gather momentum in Reno toward a hot Fourth of July to propel them to Vegas. Blanchard came to Reno ranked 15th with Richardson 16th and Cayla Small 17th. Also in the mix were the WPRA’s leading rookie, Taci Bettis, and past WNFR qualifiers Taylor Jacob and Jane Melby as well as the WPRA’s number two cowgirl Kathy Grimes. Because all short rounds are drawn for positions, Bettis ran first after coming back in the middle of the pack. Showing no signs of rookie jitters running in such a huge event, Bettis and her horse Smash set the pace at what proved to be an unbeatable 16.91 seconds, the fastest run of the rodeo. Megan McLeod Sprague took advantage of a spot in the finals thanks to a last minute replacement for another cowgirl unable to return to Reno, posting a fabulous 17.17 as the second runner in the finals. Richardson and her horse Radio were next in the draw. True to form, Radio has already heated up as the summer temps have and the solid gray

In China, Perdue Welcomes U.S. Beef back to Market
Slices Ceremonial Prime Rib, Meets with Chinese Officials in Beijing
Beijing, China, June 30, 2017) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today joined with U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad to slice a Nebraska prime rib in a Beijing ceremony, formally marking the return of U.S. beef to the Chinese market after a 13year hiatus. Perdue celebrated the reintroduction of American beef products to China after shipments were halted at the end of 2003. The return of U.S. beef and beef products is a part of the U.S.-China 100-Day Action Plan announced by the Trump Administration on May 11, 2017, with the first shipment of U.S. beef arriving in China on June 19, 2017. “Beef is a big deal in China and I'm convinced that when the Chinese

people get a taste of U.S. beef, they're going to want more of it. These products coming into China are safe, wholesome, and very delicious. This is also a good harbinger of the kind of relationship that can be developed. We hope there are other things we can cooperate on and we're going to use U.S. beef as the forerunner.”
President Trump, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin, officials with the U.S. Trade Representative, and Secretary Perdue announced the deal brokered with China to allow the return of U.S. beef to China in May. China has emerged as a major beef buyer in recent years, with imports
increasing from $275 million in 2012 to $2.5 billion in 2016. The United States is the world’s largest beef producer and in 2016 was the world’s fourth-largest exporter, with global sales of more than $5.4 billion. Earlier in June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the final details of a protocol to allow American companies to begin shipping beef exports to China. To date, producers and processors in Nebraska and Kansas are eligible to ship beef products to China,,

Lydia Culp’s web of broken promises stretched across the country.
Ten-year-old boys in New Mexico she promised a new rodeo horse after collecting their hard-earned $2,000. A teen-age girl from California excited about the perfect horse to replace the beloved one she lost. A rancher in Montana who scrimped together enough for a new horse for his job but never got it. Culp’s reputation as a swindler led her victims and others in the tight-knit horse community to band together and create a Facebook site called “Taking Down Lydia” to warn others not to fall prey to her scams. The horse community celebrated when Culp was sentenced to six years in prison May 31 in Summit County Common Pleas Court for bilking 22 people in 14 states and Canada out of more than $130,000. Culp, 32, had pleaded guilty to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and numerous felony theft-related charges.

Sarah Bowman was a pistol-packin’ mamacita. She had no children of her own, but she adopted numerous American Indian and Mexican orphans who stayed with her for life. She definitely towered over her brood. One eyewitness claimed Bowman stood seven feet tall. That seems like an exaggeration to me, so I’ll go with the next tallest observation: “she was six foot six.” She was adored by all the soldiers in the Southwest for “her bravery in the field and for her unceasing kindness in nursing the sick and wounded.” Wounded by a saber slash across her cheek during the Mexican-American War, she allegedly shot and killed the Mexican soldier who had cut her. The 4th Infantry awarded her “rations for life.” She has never been honored, properly, until now.

A Giantess On The Colorado Private Sylvester Matson, impressed by Sarah Bowman, wrote in his diary on May 9, 1852: “Today we are reinforced by a renowned female character. They call her doctor Mary. Her other name is the Great Western.” Matson described her as a “giantess over seven feet tall,” with a scar across her cheek from a Mexican saber wound. The camp story claimed that she had killed the Mexican soldier who wounded her. “She appears here modest and womanly not withstanding her great size and attire. She has on a crimson velvet waist, a pretty riding skirt and her head is surmounted by a gold laced cap of the Second Artillery. She is carrying pistols and a rifle. She reminds me of Joan of Arc and the days of chivalry,” Matson wrote.
Crossing At Yuma Crossing Sarah Bowman arrived at Yuma Crossing in December 1852, bringing along several homeless Mexican and American Indian children (the census records state five) who she had adopted in New Mexico Territory. For the first part of her stay at the crossing, the “Great Western,” was engaged as a cook for the officers at Fort Yuma. Things went well until the early part of 1854 when certain people in San Diego, California, got wind of Sarah’s adopted children and were horrified that they were being cared for by a woman of “ill repute;” they threatened to take the children away. The Great Western asked the fort commander for help and the major helped set her up on land in Sonora, Mexico, right across the river. The Great Western opened a restaurant, bar and boarding house on the Gila Trail. Thus, the Great Western became the first resident of what would later become the town of Yuma, Arizona.

Farmers and ranchers are increasingly using technology to get up-tothe-minute information on weather, best management practices for fertilizer use and pest management, and more. (NIFA is accepting proposals for conferences to identify opportunities and bottlenecks in generating, managing, and integrating data within the food and agricultural system. NIFA will also consider research proposals that apply or enhance big data activities and efforts. Applications submitted to the 2017 Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Foundational Program will be accepted through the deadlines as specified for specific program areas.) We live in an age in which large volumes of information—“big data”—are generated and collected rapidly to add value to our daily
Big Data Yields Big Opportunities in Agriculture lives. Industry has harnessed data to target advertising, tailor medical treatments, and even develop the technology and infrastructure that allows us to carry miniature computers in our pockets that will pause active functions to accept incoming phone calls. The agricultural community wants to use big data to help farmers make decisions that will increase yields and deliver safe, nutritious food to communities around the world. Researchers and farmers use predictive modeling to identify best management practices for getting the best crop and livestock performance under various environmental conditions. To make the most accurate predictions, models based on even the most advanced machine learning algorithms must be rooted in comprehensive datasets. Such datasets often include numerous
weather and soil measurements as well as corresponding plant or animal performance assessments under multiple management regimes over multiple years. But how “big” is big data, anyway? If you were to print each of the 2.5 billion DNA bases that comprise the genome of a single corn plant, you would end up with a stack of printer paper taller than the Statue of Liberty. That’s pretty big, and it only sheds light upon a single perspective of our multifaceted agricultural systems. USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) launched the Food and Agriculture Cyberinformatics and Tools Initiative at a summit in October 2016 to promote effective use of data within the agricultural community. At this event and through a web-based
“ideas engine,” stakeholders from academia, industry, and government emphasized the need to maintain standards to ensure that agricultural datasets follow “FAIR”—findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable— principles. Stakeholders identified many priorities to achieve these goals, including: Develop a culture that supports and rewards communities of researchers to build off one another’s datasets, standardize protocols, harmonize experimental designs, and ensure that datasets can be usable over the long-term to minimize the number of “orphan” datasets; Foster private-public partnerships while addressing tradeoffs among data availability, ownership, value, incentives for sharing, and privacy; Build a robust infrastructure that houses and provides open access to publicly funded datasets; and Train a workforce that can manage, analyze, and manipulate large datasets. MAUNEY: ‘I WILL BE BACK’
By: Justin Felisko
J.B. Mauney will miss six months after undergoing reconstructive shoulder surgery. J.B. Mauney was recovering well in Dallas after his reconstructive shoulder surgery on Tuesday. Though Mauney will miss the remainder of the 2017 season, and the World Finals, he guaranteed he will be back with a vengeance in 2018. For now, Mauney's competitive fire will be turned toward the rehab process and making a full recovery. PUEBLO, Colo. – Two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney may have been laid up in bed earlier this week recovering from season-ending reconstructive right shoulder surgery, but the 30-year-old was very aware of the comments that began to trickle across social media channels. First off, Mauney was extremely grateful for all of the thoughts and prayers that were offered to him and his family, but let’s just say Mauney wants to set the record straight before anyone thinks this is the end of the road for the future PBR Ring of Honor inductee. Mauney will be back for the 2018 season. “What I really like seeing is the people posting I am old and I won’t come back,” Mauney said with a laugh before immediately getting serious. “When I do come back, I will show them what I am really made of. I will be back, for sure.” The North Carolina cowboy says he is extremely prepared for the long road to recovery that awaits him over the next 52
six months following the most extensive surgery of his 12-year PBR career. Mauney, who turns 31 in January, was seriously injured following his 90.5-point ride on Cowahbunga at the 2017 Calgary Stampede last week and underwent extensive shoulder reconstruction surgery on Tuesday. Dr. Tandy Freeman inserted 13 anchors and a screw into Mauney’s free arm shoulder. The surgery included ligament repair, rotator cuff repair, transplantation of his bicep tendon and removal of bone fragments. Mauney’s ligaments and tendon were torn completely off the bone in Calgary, something Freeman was not sure he had ever seen before in his 23 years as the PBR’s official on-site doctor. “It was pretty much mangled,” Mauney admitted Wednesday afternoon during his first interview since the surgery. “I separated my shoulder a few times (before Calgary), but it was not nearly as bad as some guys’ shoulders. I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The ground I hit up there, they have a shell around the bucking chute that is pretty hard. I hit right on it. I guess that impact just mangled it.” Mauney admitted his Calgary injuries were the worst of his PBR career, but explained that they don’t really match up with a lacerated liver as a teenager that “nearly killed” him just before he
Photo: Andre Silva turned pro. He has already scheduled a follow-up appointment this week with Freeman, and Mauney will not return home to North Carolina with his wife, Samantha, until undergoing his first rehabilitation session Friday at a to-bedetermined Dallas facility. Mauney will then immediately look into beginning the rehabilitation process near his home in Statesville. “Everyone that wants to say, ‘I am old and I won’t come back.’ I am not that old yet. When I got hurt, that was the best I felt in a really long time,” Mauney said. “I was riding really good.” Mauney was fifth in the PBR world standings and had a recordtying third World Championship in his sights before his season-ending injuries. He is only 1,083.76 points behind world leader Eduardo Aparecido, and his ride on Cowahbunga capped off a 3-for-4 winning performance during Pool B of the Calgary Stampede. The historically dominant second-half Built Ford Tough Series rider was heating up at just the right time, and looked poised for another world title push. Mauney will still qualify for a 12th consecutive PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals after going 21for-47 (44.68 percent) in 14 events

– the fewest of his career since competing in 15 during his rookie year (2006). His victory in Billings, Montana, was the 31st of his career and has him one away from tying two-time World Champion Justin McBride for the most career event wins in PBR history. Two more qualified rides in 2018 will put him alongside 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi and 2004 World Champion Mike Lee as the only riders with 500 rides on the BFTS. The 90-point ride master has been known throughout his career for defying odds and coming back to competition from injury sooner rather than later, but even Mauney admits this time that won’t be the case. “Nah, I doubt it,” Mauney said. “Unless some kind of miracle happens between now and November. It is not looking so good right now for that. I can dang near pick the arm up or anything. Right now, it is like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s arm is on my body." This will be the first time in Mauney’s career that he will be unable to compete at the World Finals for at least one round. His streak of 10 straight Top 10 finishes in the world standings, as well as four consecutive Top-4 finishes, will also likely come to an end. Regardless, this latest setback has Mauney motivated to prove to everyone he still has another World Championship run in him. “Oh yeah, I will be in the (title race) next year,” Mauney concluded. “Once I get through all of this rehab and everything, I will be in the best shape of my life. I can’t smoke anymore. I won’t be a smoker anymore, and I will be in the best shape of my life.” “I will (return) riding really good.” Follow Justin Felisko on Twitter @jfelisko

Cody Custer being Inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame
The Custer family never had any kidssized saddles for their horses. So Cody Custer learned to ride bareback.
Only years later would he realize that it would have a profound effect on his bull riding career. It was one of two important lessons he learned in the 1970s. “I didn’t have the luxury of having my feet in the stirrups,” he said, “so I really think that helped develop my ability to shift my weight around, use my legs and learn how to ride with my lower body.” Custer said learning to ride that way was in effect “survival mode,” and that he was less focused on bull riding and concentrating instead on staying upright on the back of his family’s horses. He and his brother Jim Bob would jump logs, and learning to push with their feet was something both came by naturally.
54
They would later apply the same techniques while practicing on a stationary barrel. “Then you’re not relying so much on your spurs and your rope,” he said. “If you’re riding bulls properly - from the waist down - your spurs are just an enhancement.” Even well into his professional career, Custer would practice during the week on what he called nice jump kickers. The key was that he practiced without wearing any spurs, which was a constant reminder to “ride the animal” as opposed to just grabbing hold with his spurs. The technique also helped with posture and balance. He got on his first calf in 1970, and two years later started riding steers. His father let him try his first junior bull two weeks before his 14th birthday. Cody said that by not accelerating to bulls at an early age, he and other legends of his era were able to build a foundation of skills, mechanics, style and form. While he was growing up, his father, who was as influential in his development as Cody has been for his 13-year-old son Brett, owned 30 head

of roping steers, which they also used as riding steers. “Every opportunity I had to get on them, I was getting on,” said Custer, who grew up in Flagstaff, Ariz. Custer got his permit in 1983, filled it a year later and was considered a PRCA rookie in 1985 alongside fellow PBR co-founder Clint Branger. Early on, he learned a lot from traveling with Ted Nuce, another co-founder. In 1985, he was still competing in all three rough-stock events when, as he said, bull riding sort of took off for him, “and that’s just kind of where my focus stayed.” He missed qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo that year and again in 1986 before beginning a streak of six consecutive trips to the Las Vegas event, which culminated with his winning a world title in 1992. He started off that year by winning a rodeo in Denver, and was still doing well when he and 19 others voted to invest $1,000 each into forming the PBR. Later that season, he won again in Salinas, Calif., to take the lead in the world standings, and never looked back.
AUGUST 2017
Custer said his success was made all the more meaningful knowing he won his title while competing against the likes of Ty Murray, Jim Sharp, Tuff Hedeman and Wacey Cathey. “I just started the year real good,” he said. “I got a good start and then the year just kept going real well.” Riding against that kind of talent made him better, but Custer said that he was able to hold his own because of the childhood lessons of how to ride from the waist down. A year after winning the title, he got hurt, starting a series of injuries that kept him from ever truly contending again. The PBR started hosting events in 1994. In 1998 and again in 1999, he qualified for both the PBR World Finals and the NFR. In 2000, he decided to focus solely on the PBR. His best finish came in 2001 when he ended the year ranked eighth in the world - his only Top 10 finish. He retired in 2003. Custer was inducted into the Ring of Honor later that same year, along with Aaron Semas and Myrtis Dightman.

History of the Worlds’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo
Organizers of the first Payson Rodeo were Abraham Henson Meadows; know later as “Arizona Charlie” Meadows (1860-1962), who moved to the Rim Country with his parents from California in 1877 and young John Collins Chilson (1867-1924) who also moved to this area from California in 1879. The word passed along from ranch to ranch and on the third weekend of August in 1884, cowboys participated in the first Payson Rodeo. This first rodeo was held in Mid-Town Pasture, a little southwest of the intersection of Highway 87 and old Main, now the site of Sawmill Crossing. A few ranchers and cowboys gathered to see how their roping and riding abilities and the speed of their horses compared to those of their neighbors’. Horse racing, bronc riding, and the ranch-born roping events, along with a little silver dollar pitching, dominated the early agenda. Other events were soon added. Cock fights, greased pig contests, sack races, and foot races became part of the celebration. The Cowboys also had what they called a “chicken pulling” contest. The fowl was buried in the street with only its head and neck sticking out, A rider would thunder by at a full gallop, lean down and jerk the unfortunate bird flopping from the dirt, then return to the starting point to await his time. There were no chutes in those early days. The broncs were lead or dragged to the middle of the street and eared down by a couple of cowboys. Someone cinched a rig onto the horse’s back and a twister (bronc rider) stepped onboard. This was not a timed event until later years. The horse was ridden until his head came up – or the rider was thrown. Twisters usually brought their own broncs to those first rodeos. They would ride the broncs of other competitors, as well as their own, so that everyone got a fair shake. During the street rodeos of the early 1920s those bronc riders began testing their skills on the local white face and Durham cattle. There was no Brahma stock at the Payson Rodeo until 1950 when Rodeo stock contractors began hauling them to Payson. Anything that could buck was fair game: wild steers, cows, bulls, bareback horses. Some enterprising cowboys even tried pulling their saddles off horses and putting them on bulls. Screwing the saddle onto the back of the bull sometimes furnished considerable more entertainment than the ensuing ride afterwards. This practice did not last because the saddles would turn on the loose-skinned bulls.
Payson – World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo
Danny Freeman, author of the World’s Oldest Rodeo 100-Year History 18881988, clams that Prescott, Arizona held the world’s first rodeo in 1888. We accept that. But, as will be shown, Payson held its first rodeo four years earlier in 1884. Freeman states that “those early contests in Payson were some local cowboys competing in roping. They were not organized. The cowboys just came together and roped against each other”. This is not the case. Local cowboys did compete in roping events – and they also competed in riding and racing events. Additionally, there was organization or the cowboys and spectators would not have known when and where to gather. Entry fees were taken and price money was paid. We know from Charlie Chilson (March 1, 1968 Payson Round Up Article and 1972 Jayne Peace interview) that his father John C. Chilson, was not only a rodeo organizer along with Arizona Charlie Meadows, but both were also contestants in the first Payson Rodeo held in 1884 in the Midtown Pasture. Charlie was sure that the year was 1884. Additionally, Charlie Chilson told Jayne Peace that Charlie Meadows joined a Wild West show about 1890. Dick Robbins (1900-1983), the son of John Robbins and Emma Cole Robins, was a top rodeo hand in the 1930s and 1940s. He traveled and roped, often with Lee Barkdoll. In a 1981 interview with Jayne Peace, Dick said that the Payson Rodeo started in 1884. Maggie Solomon Journigan Miller, wife of Payson pioneer Julian Journigan 60
and mother-in-law to Payson Rodeo Personalities, Lee Barkdoll and Dick Robbins, told Jayne Peace in an interview held on December 16, 1983: “Since my husband had to be gone so much I took a job cooking for Polly Brown at the old Sixteen-To-One Saloon in Payson. That was in 1921, just a year or so before it burned to the ground. They were still having the rodeos in the street. There were still lots of the old cowboys around then. I remember Jess Chilson and Wash Gibson both said they were at the first Payson Rodeo. Jess said his mother had to take him because he was only a tiny baby, but his dad, Emer, was a contestant in that first one. Jess said he was born in 1884, so he knew that was the year the rodeos started in Payson.
Payson’s Horse Racing Heritage
Starting before 1884, local cowboys matched horse races in the Rim Country. Then when the annual celebrations began, horse racing was a premier event and several races were held each day. At first, these were cow horse races, but soon the betting stakes grew to significant proportions and some of the well-heeled ranches brought Thoroughbred and other blooded horses to run in Payson and at other rodeos. The first really great horse to run in Payson was Crowder who beat Emer Chilson’s horse, Hungry John at the 1888 Payson Rodeo.
Main Street Rodeos 1885-1926
After the first rodeo in the Midtown Meadow, the celebration found its way downtown. For a few days in August, Main Street was transformed into a cowboy contest grounds, bordered on the sides only by wagons, yard-fences and spectators. Temporary corrals and sometimes chutes were set up at the upper end of the street while the lower end was left open. A couple of cowboys hazed the events, dabbed a loop on the critters and led them back to the corral after they were roped and ridden. This procedure worked well enough for the roping events, but there were times when stock escaped the confines of the grounds. This added a little excitement for the spectators and mattered little to those early-day cowboys. They would pile a loop on a critter before he got out of town and it was soon tallied back into the corrals. Most of the activities took place in front of the present-day Bootleg Alley which was the center of town. The old August Pieper Saloon, known as the “Dive” stood on the north side of the street and the Pieper Homestead was on the south side directly across from the saloon. A large water trough and well were located near the house where thirsty teams, saddle horses, and cattle could be watered. The water had to be hand-drawn with a bucket and pulley. The 16 to 1 and the Cowboy’s Home were also popular water holes. Since 1884 The August Doins has attracted such names as Arizona Charlie Meadows, Tom Mix, Tom Horn, Monty “Hawkeye” Henson and Tye Murray just to name a few. The influence that the Payson Rodeo has had on “Rodeo” history in general is far reaching. In fact, there are still many people across this country who fondly remember the excitement and anticipation they felt as they attended their first August Doins. In the book titled Rodeo 101, written by Jinx and Jayne Peace, they asked some people to share their thoughts about the topic, “When I think of the Payson Rodeo, I think of…” Terry Willbanks – When they closed off the streets and had those dances! Leckie Jeane Cline Ski – Downtown Payson at night. It was just one big party. When the fights and tear gas got too bad, we moved out into the street to dance. Anna Mae Ogilvie Deming – It was a great gather of family and friends. There was so much love and respect – just a world of good people. It meant as much as Christmas. It was something we looked forward to from one year to the next. No man danced with his hat on and Constable Walter Lovelady saw to that! If a man started to the dance floor with his hat on, Walter would tap him on the shoulder and tell him to take his hat off and be respectful of the woman. We danced the Varsovienne, the Schottische, the Paul Jones; just everything. It was a wonderful time! Dess Morris - Those wild bulls that jumped the fence and ran all over. Excerpts of this article have been taken out of “Rodeo 101”, History of the Payson Arizona Rodeo 1884-1984, by Jinx Pyle and Jayne Peace.

$1 Million Grand Prix Champion dating Bill Gates’s Daughter
American billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ daughter Jennifer Katharine Gates hit the headlines recently with news of her dating an Egyptian man named Nayel Nassar. However, Nassar is not just another Arab guy as his resume boasts numerous international successes in his sporting career. A professional equestrian, he has participated in several world championships and it is apparently horse riding that brought Nassar and Gates together. The two have been spotted together on several occasions and Nassar was recently seen with the Gates family at the 12th edition of the International Jumping Monte Carlo, reported Le Parisien. The French daily said Gates, 21, and Nassar, 26, were interested in each other. Several photos posted on both Nassar and Gates’ social media accounts show that the relationship has been going on for months. A photo of the duo posted on Valentine’s Day by Nassar was captioned: “Lucky guy convincing this beauty to be my 64
Nayel Nassar
Valentine this year...” Nassar studied management and economics at Stanford in California and graduated in 2013. He is fluent in English, French, German and Arabic. He was born in Chicago, and lived in Kuwait with his parents before moving to California in 2009. He started riding at the age five. In February, Nassar won the cup at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Wellington as he finished the race in 38.15 seconds.
Nassar’s parents put him in a lot of sports as a kid: football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis, but riding was the one that stuck. “Once you catch the horse bug, it’s hard to kick it,” he once said. In 2012, Nayal won the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series at the Winter Equestrian Festival. That same year, he qualified for the London Olympics as a reserve rider for Egypt. In 2013, Nayel won the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix at HITS

Saugerties in New York. When Nayel is not winning World Cup qualifiers, he operates a small training and sales business near San Diego, California. A Facebook page with his name has over 6,700 followers and regularly posts updates about his equestrian career.
Nayel Nassar (EGY) first tried equestrian sport around age five at a riding centre in Kuwait. He began jumping around age ten, and his parents bought him his first horse soon after. Despite trying many sports as a child, riding was the one that stuck. Currently ranked number one in the Longines FEI World Cup™ North American Western Sub league, Nayel has proven to be a motivated competitor internationally, qualifying for the FEI World Cup™ Finals in 2013 and 2014, and the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2014.

Mules Helping U.S. Forest Service Supply Firefighters Battling California Fire Associated Press reports:
The Senate Committee on Appropriations voted July 20 in favor of an amendment offered by Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), to defund the USDA’s inspection of horse slaughter, a renewal of what was effectively a ban on the practice. Today’s vote for the Udall-Graham Amendment means the Fiscal Year 2018 Appropriations Bill may move forward with language limiting USDA action in the inspection of animals, facilities or products associated with OJAI, Ventura County (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service is using to horse slaughter. Wilderness designations protect special areas of the forest, and motorized or mechanical transportation is generally not allowed. The fire 11 miles north of the city of Ojai has burned nearly 3 square miles since June 30. More than 660 firefighters were on the lines.

And we'd love to hear from you in this aspect. First, tell us where you're from (we think there's a global audience here), and then tell us how the film – through Sheila's life – inspired you.

The Plains, Va. – The Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team won the FEI Nations Cup™ CICO3*at the Great Meadow International, presented by Adequan, for the second consecutive year. The team of Jennie Brannigan, Lynn Symansky, Phillip Dutton, and Boyd Martin defeated teams from Canada and Great Britain in the only FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing competition outside Europe. Brannigan also captured her second individual title at Great Meadow, having won previously in 2015. Cross country course designer Mike Etherington-Smith reversed the direction and order of the fences from last year with the intention of generating interest

jumping penalties. Brannigan had an unforgettable day. The Reddick, Fla. resident went third in the team order and secured the victory for the U.S.incurring only 1.6 time faults on Nina Gardner’s Cambalda. Brannigan came into the final day in fourth place and catapulted to the top spot with a final score of 49.8 penalties. “The first time I came it was so exciting because it earned me a spot as a traveling alternate for the Pan Am Games, which was quite special to me,” said Brannigan. “It’s such an honor to get to ride for your country and “Ping” has been an incredible horse in a lot of ways and is wonderful to me. I really appreciate him stepping up to the plate.”
By the time second U.S. team rider Lynn Symansky took to the course, two riders were eliminated from the British team and the Canadians had already secured a team score. The Middleburg, Va. resident jumped clear, finishing just above the optimum timeon Donner, owned by The Donner Syndicate, LLC. They incurred 1.2 time faults for a three-phase score of 50.1 penalties, which was good enough for second place individually. Symansky was originally the alternate, but was named to the team after Buck Davidson, Jr. withdrew Carl Segal and Sherrie Martin’s Copper Beach.
AUGUST 2017
“It’s such a great cohesive group. Everybody just works together and supports each other. We’re all out here to win and do the best that we can,” said Symansky. “It was awesome. The whole way around I heard people cheering me on, saying ‘come on Lynn you can do it!’ It’s cool to ride at your hometown event. It was an honor.” U.S. pathfinder Boyd Martin of Cochranville, Pa, was the first rider to complete the course within the optimum time of 6 minutes and 33 seconds, finishing within two seconds at 6:31. Riding Steady Eddie, owned by Denise Lahey, Pierrie Colin, George and Gretchen Wintersteen, the Olympic veteran finished on his dressage score of 58.3 penalties “He came through for me, he was the only horse that finished on his dressage score,” said Martin of the New Zealand Thoroughbred. “It was a bit hard to gauge the course because the first rider Justine Dutton (GBR) fell and second rider Jessica Phoenix (CAN) was held on the course, but I zipped around and everything rode really well.” Dutton, of West Grove, Pa., already knew that the U.S. had won the Nations Cup prior to going out, but an individual win was on the line. Riding Kristine and John Norton’s I’m Sew Ready, thesix-time Olympic veteran finished outside the optimum time adding 5.6 time faults to his cumulative score of 51.6 penaltiesand putting him in third place. “My teammates did it all for me. Jennie came home and I had a minute to go before I went in the box and they said she only had a couple of time faults,” said Dutton. “I thought it was a good run for the horse. He’s not the fastest, but I think I could have done a little better job at the galloping fences. Overall, though, I think it was a good run for him and pleased that he went so well.” The winning score for the U.S. was 151.5 penalties. Team Canada finished on 168.6 penalties for second place. Because Great Britain failed to have the required three qualifying scores, they were awarded a drop score penalty of 1000 points, and finished third. Pozzi Tonozzi Back on Top over the Fourth of July
By Ann Bleiker
WPRA barrel racer and twotime world champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi is back in familiar territory - on top of the leaderboard for the Fourth of July run, known in the rodeo world as Cowboy Christmas. Pozzi Tonozzi was needing a big week and it all fell together nicely for the 33-year old new mom.
“My expectations are always high to do well but it doesn’t always work out that way,” said Pozzi Tonozzi, who won $20,654. “The last couple of years, I have been seasoning new colts and it has been a struggle but I definitely wanted to win enough to get me closer to the top 15 this week. I kept telling Garrett (her husband) that I needed a big lick somewhere, I needed to just win first somewhere to get me back in contention. I did a pretty good job of it this week.” Pozzi Tonozzi competed in nine rodeos from June 26-July 4, winning money at seven of them on three different horses. Her biggest paychecks came at the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede where she finished second in the average winning a total of $9,457, and at the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., where she captured the title and a check worth $5,462. At both of those rodeos she called upon the services of her main mount

Pozzi Tonozzi Steele Magnolias “Steeley.” She also jockeyed the 10-year old mare around the cloverleaf pattern in Oakley City, Utah, placing 14th and adding another $360. She jumped on KissKiss BangBang “Mona,” her 7-year old mare in Livingston, Mont., Window Rock, Ariz., and at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she added $2,828, $1,452, and $485, respectively. The third horse that carried her to the pay window in West Jordan, Utah, was one she has only had for a couple of months that she calls Rusty. The duo picked up $610 after finishing in a tie for sixth. Pozzi Tonozzi was hoping for a big week to not only move up in the
world standings but also secure a spot in the upcoming $1 million Days of ‘47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo in Salt Lake City. The top 10 in the world standings was one way to qualify and when the dust settled and new standings were released on July 5, Pozzi Tonozzi was 10th with $46,975, punching her ticket to Salt Lake City. “This was a good week to start winning as I think this will move me into the top 10, which was perfect timing for Salt Lake,” said Pozzi Tonozzi of qualifying for Salt Lake City. “I can’t get too excited yet, as I need to keep my head down and keep it rolling. My horses are sound and running good, so I am excited to see what the rest of the month has in store.” The last time Pozzi Tonozzi topped the leaderboard during Cowboy
Christmas was in 2012 when she won the most of any WPRA or PRCA member with $27,789. Her largest amount won during this time was in 2009, the last time she won a world title, with $29,372. Rounding out the top three in Cowboy Christmas standings were Carman Pozzobon with $16,540 after a big win in Ponoka, Alberta, as Canada celebrated their 150th Birthday on July 1. Tammy Fischer was third with $13,681 after winning big at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede. Fischer also collected checks at Greeley, Colo., Red Lodge, Mont., Belle Fourche, S.D., Mobridge, S.D. and Colorado Springs, Colo., qualifier. World standings leader Tiany Schuster added another $13,446 running her 2017 earnings to $163,457.

Came to Arizona in a Covered Wagon
HUBE YATES - CAVE CREEK, ARIZONA Hubert Ammon “Hube” Yates June 1903, August 1980
In 1980 Hubert A. (Hube) Yates, 77 who was known throughout Arizoma for his annual horseback trek from his riding stable in Cave Creek to his ranch near Heber, died on a Sunday at the ranch. Hubert was the son of James Elmer Yates 1874–1954 and Lilly May Crawley 1874–1926 Mr. Yates had retired in 1977 after conducting the 10-day wilderness trail rides for guests for more than two decades. He was residing at 18648 N. 30th Street in Phoenix, Arizona. Before he bought the riding stable, he was with the Phoenix Fire Department 23 1/2 years, retiring as a captain in 1947. While he was a fireman, he won the Carnegie Hero Medal in 1931 for rescuing a man from the flooded Salt River near Tempe. At the time of his passing, his son, James Sr.was a 29 years veteran of the fire department and his grandson James Jr. was a paramedic with the department.
Newsletter article recalling the incident and other highlights of Hubert A Yates’ life.
The man he saved was Ole Newtson, age 69, a retired farmer. Text from the Hero Fund website: HUBERT A. YATES Phoenix, Arizona Hubert A. Yates saved Ole Newtson from drowning, Tempe, Arizona, February 13, 1931. Newtson, 69, retired farmer, was alone on an island in the Salt River when the water from heavy rains threatened to overflow the island. He got into a large box, paddled a few feet from the island, and then clung to willows. It was dusk, and logs and other debris drifted in a current of 5 m.p.h. Many persons assembled on the bank but did nothing. Yates, 28, city fireman, went six miles in an automobile to the river, and removing his clothing and taking one end of a line 150 feet long in his mouth, he swam across a channel 125 feet wide, in which the water was 12 feet deep. He got footing in water 3.5 feet deep, pulled a heavy rope that was tied to the line across the water, and tied the rope to a tree. He then waded to the box and pushed it with Newtson in it several hundred feet to the tree. He fastened the rope to the box, and Newtson in the box was pulled by men to the bank. Yates swam and drifted in the current 300 feet in returning to the bank. Mr. Yates was the state bicycle-riding champion for three years in 1920s. He represented Arizona in the world championships in New York in 1921 and he won the bike race from Tucson to Phoenix. He published a book titled, “From Thunder to Breakfast” that related the highlights of his life. He also was known for his story telling. Mr. Yates was a minister for the Church of Christ for more than 50 years. He was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma and came to Arizona in a covered wagon with his missionary family in 1914. Survivors included his wife Patsy; sons Janes Sr. and Hubert Sr.; three sisters; two brothers; eight grandchildren and a great grandchild.

near Lafayette, Calif., when Paul Albert published the first issue of the magazine that served as a “voice for the horse.” After relocating to Reno, Nev., for a few years under new ownership, the magazine was moved in the late 1940s to Colorado Springs, and then, in 2010, moved to its current home of Fort Worth, Texas. Named after the first recipient of the award in 2014, Ken Stemler, the Pioneer Award is bestowed to those who have had a huge impact on the sport of professional rodeo, the PRCA and the Hall of Fame museum. The Pioneer Award is presented in recognition of significant contributions which helped the development, growth, advancement and success of the PRCA and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and their missions. It also recognizes those who have, through their service, dedication and positive influence, enhanced the scope, reach and future success of both organizations. Stemler was recruited by the PRCA in 1976, just as the company was about to take flight on one of the most dynamic periods of change in the organization’s history. During his 10 years with the PRCA, Stemler was at the heart of most of the sweeping innovations the PRCA undertook, starting with the creation of the money-making arm of the organization, PRCA Properties, which was modeled after NFL Properties. He was instrumental in the fundraising, design and construction of the ProRodeo Hall of Champions (now the ProRodeo Hall of Fame) and
the PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs during the organization’s move from its former home in Denver. The Ken Stemler Pioneer Award may or may not be given annually, and is given at the discretion of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Previous honorees include Ken Stemler (2014), Brenda Michaels (2015) and Earl and Weldon Bascom (2016). For more information, contact ProRodeo Hall of Fame Director Kent Sturman at 719.528.4714 or ksturman@prorodeo.com.

Olympians Kraut and Ward go double clear in come-from-behind podium finish Aachen, Germany – The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team climbed from behind to secure a silver medal tie with Switzerland in the FEI Nations Cup at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Aachen in Aachen, Germany on Thursday. A podium finish depended on clear rounds from Olympic team gold medalists McLain Ward and HH Azur and Laura Kraut and Zeremonie. Like clockwork, the combinations came through in the clutch for doubleclear performances. The U.S. and Switzerland ended on eight faults while home country Germany won gold with zero faults. “We brought our ‘A’ team to Aachen. We have so much respect for Aachen, and we almost pulled it off. It’s tough knowing midway through the first round that the best score you can get is eight faults. We were fully confident that we could correct some mistakes and stay on zero the rest of the way and let the field come back to us. The Germans were just a better team today, but not by much,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “What we saw here today was sport at the very highest level. It doesn’t get any better than that. And it is an honor for us to be able to compete here!” The U.S. found itself out of podium contention early with an eight-fault total after the first round. Clear rounds from Olympic team gold medalist Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Zeremonie, Old Willow Farms’ 2007 Holsteiner

mare, and Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) and Double H Farm and Francois Mathy’s 2006 Warmblood mare, kept the U.S. hanging on after Rio Olympic team silver medalist Kent Farrington (Wellington. Fla.) and Gazelle, his and Robin Parksy’s 2006 Belgian Warmblood mare, and two-time Olympic team gold medalist Elizabeth “Beezie” Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Coach, Abigail Wexner’s 2008 Holsteiner gelding, each had eight faults. Tied for fifth with The Netherlands, the U.S. team rallied for an improved second round. The world number one ranked show jumper, Farrington, and Gazelle, rebounded with a clear round. Kraut and Zeremonie continued with a flawless, second round performance, jumping a double clear for the evening and allowing the U.S. to drop Madden and Coach’s eight fault score. After three combination rotations, Germany locked up the gold, while the U.S. sat tied for third with Belgium and Switzerland with eight faults. Ward, the world number two, and Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat came through with clear rounds, while Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet had three unlucky rails for 12 faults, propelling the U.S. and Switzerland to a silver medal tie. “Aachen is the pinnacle of the sport so this is like my Olympics this year. To go double clear - I’m just so proud of Zeremonie and all the team around her who helped get her to this point; it’s just thrilling,” said Kraut. The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team Wins Silver at FEI Nations Cup™ CDIO5* Aachen
Graves and Verdades Win Grand Prix Special
Aachen, Germany – The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team won the silver medal at the FEI Nations Cup at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Aachen in Aachen, Germany on Saturday with a final score of 450.392. Rio Olympic team bronze medalist Laura Graves and Verdades were foot perfect as they bested the field of competitors, unseating Germany’s Isabell Werth in the Grand Prix Special to win with a final a score of 81.824%. “These incredible young ladies are just super athletes along with super wonderful horses, some of which are brand new to arenas such as this,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover. “I was over-wrought with emotion about them landing in second place halfway through this Nations Cup. On the one hand, a part of me expects that, I expect excellence. Still, it is an extra thrill to have this youthful look of new faces coming along with our seasoned veterans. I’m very happy and very excited about this group.” Maintaining their silver status from Thursday’s Grand Prix, the U.S. had little to no room for error as they entered the arena. The 2016 Olympic duo of Graves (Geneva, Fla.) and Verdades, Graves’ and Curt Maes’ 2002 Dutch Warmblood gelding, kept the momentum going fresh off their Grand Prix test, where they placed second with a 79.514%. They were determined to keep the team on the podium by producing a showstoping performance in the Grand Prix Special. “Today was just our day. My horse gave me a great birthday present,” said Graves. “It was actually the first time this year that we have shown in the [Grand Prix] Special. I could not be more pleased with him. Aachen brings out the top riders, and that’s what keeps me motivated.”
Olivia LaGoy-Weltz, Kasey Perry-Glass, Laura Graves, and Adrienne Lyle (Photo Credit: Shannon Brinkman Photo) Graves is the fifth U.S. dressage rider to win at Aachen, behind Patricia Galvin and Jessica Ransehousen (1960), Robert Dover (1987 CHIO Freestyle) and Steffen Peters (2009). “A win in Aachen is tantamount to a win at the Olympics,” said Dover. “She was against the very best rider from the Olympic Games, the very best rider from the World Cup and when you beat that rider and horse, it’s just everything. When you go into the stadium and have our national anthem played and our flag go up, it is something she will never forget in her life. Nothing can make me more proud or happier for her.” London Olympic veteran Adrienne Lyle (Ketchum, Idaho) aboard Salvino, the 2007 Hanoverian stallion owned by Salvino Partners, LLC, entered the ring confident and composed, demonstrating brilliant movements to finish on a final score of 71.814% and 73.608% in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special, respectively. “I’m ecstatic,” said Dover. “She rode magnificently both days. Today, the marks reflected a super talented horse and a fantastic rider piloting this young horse.”
Relatively new to international competitions, Olivia LaGoy-Weltz (Haymarket, Va.) and Lonoir, LaGoyWeltz and Mary Anne McPhail’s 2004 Danish Warmblood gelding, competed with poise riding two technically
outstanding tests, finishing the Grand Prix with a 71.514% and 72.118% in the Grand Prix Special. “Olivia is another incredibly gifted rider. She is as tough about wanting perfect and being determined,” said Dover. “Right before she went in I said rack up as many points as you possibly can in the first half of the test because his greenness is in the second half and that’s exactly what she did. That’s what you want in a team rider; it shows another great talent for the future.”
Graves’ Rio Olympic teammate, Kasey Perry-Glass (Wellington, Fla.) and Goerklintgaards Dublet, Diane Perry’s 2003 Warmblood gelding, had an unexpected miscommunication in their first pirouette during Thursday’s Grand Prix, resulting in a score of 68.929% which was the drop score for the team. However, the pair’s performance on Saturday set the tone for the U.S. with a score of 71.608%. “We wanted Kasey to keep showing the continued evolution of how this horse is coming on,” said Dover. “It [Grand Prix Special] was so amazing and so lovely. The 74 -75% is right there. I’m thrilled with her.” Germany took home top honors with a final collective team score of 471.046, and placed three of their riders in the top ten in the Grand Prix Special. Sweden, who was in fourth after the Grand Prix, surpassed Denmark to round out the top three with a final score of 437.635. Graves and Verdades placed third with a score of 82.550% in the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday morning. Support The Dutta Corp. Extra H-2B Visas Made Available
U.S. businesses will be able to hire up to 15,000 additional temporary non-agricultural workers under the H-2B program following a final rule that the Departments of Homeland Security and Labor submitted to the Federal Register this week. To qualify for the additional visas, petitioners must attest, under penalty of perjury, that their business is likely to suffer irreparable harm if it cannot employ H-2B nonimmigrant workers during fiscal year (FY) 2017. It was determined there are not enough qualified and willing U.S. workers are available to perform temporary nonagricultural labor to satisfy the needs of some American businesses in FY 2017.
Congress gave Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly the discretionary authority to address the lack of available temporary workers and provide this one-time increase to the congressionally set annual cap. H-2B visas are used for temporary, non-agriculture workers at a variety of businesses, including racetrack grooms and handlers. The government offers 66,000 such visas a year, with the 2017 cap having been met within the first 30 days of open enrollment. This left many organizations without access to the critical labor pool provided by the H-2B program. Starting this week, eligible petitioners for H-2B visas can file Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker and must submit a supplemental attestation on Form ETA 9142-B-CAA with their petition. A new tip line to report general H-2B abuse and employer violations has also been established. Details on eligibility and filing requirements are available in the final rule and on the One-Time Increase in H-2B Nonimmigrant Visas for FY 2017. This page also includes information on how individuals can report abuse in the program. For more information on USCIS and its programs, please visit www.uscis. gov.

Where Did Your Horse Passion Start? AQHA President Ralph Seekins shares how he was introduced to American Quarter Horses as a young boy.
By AQHA President Ralph Seekins As I travel around the American Quarter Horse community, there are a couple questions I particularly like to ask our folks – from youth to Super-Selects. And those questions always seem to light up the person’s eyes as he or she enthusiastically fills me in. What do I ask? Well, it goes something like this, “Tell me how you first got interested in horses.” And then, “How did that lead you to American Quarter Horses and to where you are today?” Myself, I clearly recall that, when I was 4 years old, my family moved to Cody, Wyoming. There, I was introduced to and enthralled by horses of all sizes, colors and breeds. My mom recognized my early passion and she decorated the top of my 5-year-old birthday cake with little plastic cowboys and prancing horses. I can still picture that cake to this day. At that time, my dad had just graduated from the University of Wisconsin, having finished his civil engineering degree through the G.I. Bill of Rights and was newly hired by the Bureau of Reclamation – a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior. So, with a wife and four little boys living on an entry-level government salary, there wasn’t any spare change for even a little horse. But there were people in our little church who did have horses. We’d visit the family’s Wapiti, Wyoming, home on many a Sunday afternoon as our families shared an after-church “pot luck” dinner. Strange, but for some reason, I just kept wandering down to the horse corrals. They recognized my passion and did a lot to nurture my interest, sure that it would someday bear fruit. Then, on my 8th birthday, I opened my only gift. It was a bridle. Breathless, I ran outside sure that there was a horse to put it on. He wasn’t there. But later that day, I met the retired ranch horse that taught me how to ride

(bareback) and so much more. Long story short, as I grew older, there were new horses in my life to learn with and from. But I distinctly remember watching in awe as beautiful and talented American Quarter Horses put on cutting demonstrations at the Cody Rodeo. Everything else around me had to wait until those demos were over. “Someday,” I swore, “I’ll have one of those American Quarter Horses myself.” Now, decades later, my family is blessed to have a few of those amazing American Quarter Horses. They are shared by my wife, Connie, and me, our children, our grandchildren, 4-H kids, therapeutic riders and more. And today, I spend a lot of my time looking for kids with horse passion written across their personas, helping to nurture their budding passion. So, if it isn’t too much trouble, I’d really like to hear from you out there – from kids to seniors – where your American Quarter Horse passion started, how it grew and where it is today. I’ll bet it has been just as exciting and fulfilling in your life as it has been in Connie’s and mine. Won’t you take a few minutes to share your story with me and, in turn, with all of us at AQHA, on AQHA’s social media platforms? Whether it is a story on AQHA’s Facebook page or a photo of you and your favorite American Quarter Horse on Instagram, I know you have a great story, and I’m eager to have you share it.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Barn Fire Kills Horses and Injures Rescuers
More than a dozen horses were killed in a barn fire in a southwest Chicago suburb early Wednesday morning. Authorities said just after 1 a.m. they responded to a barn fire in Plainfield in the 1120 Wheeler Road where horse owners were trying to rescue horses from the blaze. According to Mary Ludemann with the Plainfield Fire Protection District, a total of 18 horses were killed in the flames. There were 30 horses inside the barn when the fire started, Ludemann said. Two people were injured while trying to rescue the horses, officials said. They were transported to local medical facilities for treatment but their conditions were not immediately known. A veterinarian was at the scene treating the surviving horses, according to Fire Chief David Riddle. “These are pets that are part of people’s families,” Riddle said. “It’s hard to imagine the suffering of the animals.”

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday morning, but authorities said the barn was a “total loss.” Investigators are looking into whether or not fireworks may have played a role, Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said, adding that nothing so far leads them to believe the fire was suspicious.

Studies show that women who own horses live longer than those who don’t
Women who have horses live longer
Recent studies done in Western NC, Northern Virginia and northern Florida involving various groups of “horsey” and non “horsey women are showing some startling results. The double blind study followed women in different age groups over a forty year time frame to capture this objective data.
The study grouped women into two groups of horse (for at least five years) & non-horse owners and then further into ten year age spans. The most significant spike in longevity came at the 65-75 age span which showed highest disparity at 20 longer lives for horse women. Researchers point to the

A rift has drifted through the horsing community. The discussion on alfalfa has become a battleground. “It’s got too much of this” or “not enough of that.” With the explosion of alfalfa production in the western United States, in some areas it’s become the only stored forage available. This has led to alfalfa being blamed (justly or unjustly) for many horse-related complications. The simple fact is that many horses are raised and perform each year on diets consisting largely of alfalfa. The real secret comes from understanding the benefits of alfalfa and knowing how to balance out its weaknesses.

Is Alfalfa Bad For Horses? in a horse’s urine, so giving them access to H2O can be critical. As a practical recommendation, it’s best to avoid alfalfa hay with extreme levels of protein (greater than 17% crude protein).
The Mineral Issue
The Protein Issue
80% of horses’ muscles and 20% of their skeletal systems are made up of protein. It’s the second major constituent of a horse’s body, water being the first. Protein is vital for a horse’s ability to grow, repair and form new tissue. It also plays an essential role in the formation of enzymes, hormones, blood solids and substances used in a horse’s immune system. Generally the protein requirements for a horse decrease with age. Growing horses need more protein as they’re not just maintaining their bodies, but actually growing new bone and muscle mass. The exception to this rule is late pregnancies and lactation, when a mare has increased protein requirements to properly nourish her foal. One of the biggest benefits of alfalfa is that it’s an excellent source of protein, both in content and quality. It’s not unusual for mid-bloom alfalfa to have a crude protein content of 17% or more. This can go a long way towards satisfying the high protein requirements of a young, growing horse. In the case of mature horses, free-choice alfalfa hay will certainly provide enough protein to satisfy requirements. What happens if your horse gets too much protein? A horse’s body cannot store extra dietary proteins (amino acids). Instead, the excess protein is broken down and used as immediate energy or stored as fat. Protein that is broken down and used for energy has an added tax associated with the disposal of nitrogen. Contrary to popular belief, this by-product is not “hard” on a horse’s kidneys unless they’re already being overtaxed in some other way. It can take extra water to void nitrogen

Today’s horses are expected to perform at higher and higher levels, to mature more rapidly, to produce more offspring and to live a longer, more productive life than ever before. But this all comes at a price. To maintain these expectations, expended nutrients must be replenished. The problem is that forage doesn’t often have enough mineral content to meet a performing horse’s complex requirements, creating potential complications. Alfalfa’s mineral content is largely dependent on the mineral content of the soil it’s grown in. The main issue arises when the mineral content of soil changes over time or from region to region. As a trend, today’s alfalfa crops generally don’t have the trace mineral profile to match the needs of a performing horse. If your horse is being fed strictly alfalfa hay, most experts recommend that you supplement their diet with additional trace minerals. These are typically in the form of pelleted grain concentrates or low intake mineral supplements. Calcium and phosphorus are particularly important minerals for the skeletal formation of younger horses. While alfalfa is an excellent source of calcium, it generally falls short when it comes to phosphorus. The ideal calcium to phosphorus ratio for a young horse is between 1.5 to 2 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorus. In comparison, alfalfa hay generally has a ratio of 15 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorus. This is why experts recommend that young, growing horses receive supplemental phosphorus in the form of ration balancer supplements or “developing horse” commercial concentrates. So is alfalfa dangerous to your horse? No, not if fed properly. Alfalfa’s availability and nutrient content make it a logical choice of feed. However, the key is to select alfalfa hay with moderate protein content and provide additional supplements to your horse when needed. Standlee Premium Western Forage® has several excellent choices of alfalfa products from pellets to cubes to compressed bales. Do you know if alfalfa is the right feed for your horse? Our nutritional specialists designed Standlee’s Forage Finder to help you pick the best forage for your favorite four-legged friend based on their specific needs and situation. Diverse Family Farms Are Important to U.S. Agriculture
Distribution of farms, value of production, and land operated by farm type, 2015 chart
Family farms remain an essential feature of agriculture in the United States. Family farms make up 99 percent of America’s 2.1 million farms and 89 percent of agricultural production. Most farms in the United States are small: 90 percent are small family farms that operate nearly half of America’s farmland. However, farms vary widely in size and other characteristics. U.S. farms range from very small retirement and residential farms to businesses with sales in the millions of dollars.
To help the public better understand the U.S. farm sector, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) released America’s Diverse Family Farms: 2016 Edition. The report categorizes farms into groupings based on several factors: the annual revenue of the farm, the primary occupation of the principal operator, and ownership of the farm – family or nonfamily. Annual revenue is measured by gross cash farm income (GCFI), the sum of the farm's crop and livestock sales, Government payments, and other farm-related income, including production contract fees. While only 24 percent of the
now account for half of all U.S. farm production, up from a third in 1991. When you think of farms that large, you may not think of family farms. However, most million-dollar farms (90 percent) are family farms. Only 3 percent are nonfamily corporations, most of which (80 percent) report no more than 10 shareholders. In short, small family farms dominate the farm count in the United States, while midsize and large-scale family farms dominate production. America’s Diverse Family Farms reveals that family farms are still central to our agricultural economy. For more information, please see the archived webinar on America’s Diverse Family Farms.
Nation’s agricultural production was attributed to small family farms in 2015, they produced more of two commodities than midsize or largescale family farms: poultry and eggs (57 percent)—mostly under production contracts—and hay (52 percent). Together, midsize and large-scale family farms accounted for 65 percent of total U.S. agricultural production, but only 9 percent of farms. Nonfamily farms (1 percent of farms) account for the remaining production (11 percent). Since 1991, agricultural production has shifted to million-dollar farms— those with GCFI of $1 million or more, measured in 2015 dollars— including both family and nonfamily farms. In fact, million-dollar farms
WEAK RESPONSE - Deadline to Take Economic Impact Survey Extended
Washington, DC- The American Horse Council Foundation (AHCF) announced today that it will be extending the deadline to complete the horse owner and supplier survey to update the National Economic Impact Study to August 18th. “The survey has been open since the beginning of June, and unfortunately we have only had around 9,000 responses,” said AHC President Julie Broadway. “We decided to extend the deadline for respondents to take the survey to ensure that we are getting as many responses as we can- we 86
estimated that the survey link should be reaching approximately 900,000 people, and the 2005 Study had over 18,000 responses itself. The industry has waited a long time for this study to be updated and we want to be sure we are getting the full picture of the impact of the vast equine industry.”
The main survey is designed to capture the impact of individual horse owners (whether commercial or recreational) and industry suppliers of equine-related goods and services. To take the horse owner & supplier survey visit American Horse Council
website. Please note, all personal information collected in the survey will be confidential and will not be distributed. The AHC encourages Individuals to share the study link above via email, social media, etc. in order to ensure maximum participation. The 2017 Economic Impact Study will contain expanded demographics with youth participation and additional segments of the industry, including Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies, Equine Sanctuaries and Rescues, Equine Academic Programs, and Equine Youth Organizations. If you are interested in receiving one of these survey links, please contact the AHC at info@horsecouncil.org.

On September 3, 1956, Labor Day, legendary jockey John Longden booted home a horse named Arrogate in the Del Mar Handicap. It was career victory No. 4,871 for Longden, making him the winningest rider of all time, surpassing Sir Gordon Richards of England. It was a grand moment in the career of Longden, who had ridden for 30 years at that time and was dealing with arthritis in his shoulders, elbows and knees. It also was a memorable moment in the history of Del Mar, especially when coupled with one 14 years later. On September 7, 1970, another Labor Day, Bill Shoemaker rode a filly named Dares J to career victory No. 6,033, surpassing Longden on the all-time wins list. Longden was there to greet “The Shoe” in the winner’s circle. But we digress. Back to Arrogate. The original Arrogate was a foal of 1951, a son of Goya II out of the Stimulus mare Hug Again. He was bred by the storied Calumet Farm in Kentucky, racing under the Calumet colors for the first 2 ½ years of his career. Then he was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Dick Griegorian for whom he competed for the next 4 ½ years and was trained by Reggie Cornell. A chestnut colt, unlike his gray latter-day namesake, original Arrogate campaigned for seven years, 1953-59, won 20 races from 83 starts and finished in-the-money another 22 times. His career earnings of $226,545, factoring in inflation, would translate to more than $2

John Longden million in 2017 dollars. Not currentday Arrogate kind of money, but certainly not bad. Original Arrogate’s best years were 1955, 1956 and 1958 when his annual earnings totals were $64,800, $60,540 and $25,900, respectively. Arrogate won three stakes in both 1955 and 1956, accounting for six of his nine career stakes triumphs. He won three stakes at Del Mar, the 1955 Escondido Optional Claiming Handicap and the 1955 and 1956 Del Mar Handicap. In the 1955 ‘Cap, Arrogate established good position soon after the start from the No. 6 post in a field of nine, right behind front-running Bobby Brocato. Longden had his horse well in hand to the second turn, then subjected Arrogate to what the official chart called “vigorous handling in the drive” to edge Bobby Brocato and jockey George Taniguchi by a nose. The time, 1:47 2/5, equaled the track record. The race favorite, coupled in the betting with seventh-place finisher Turk’s Delight, Arrogate paid $5.20 $2.60 and $2.30.

Hundreds of horses and thousands of fans from across the U.S., Canada and overseas make the journey to the Futurity each year. Thrills, and sometimes spills, abound as 3-year-old horses test their athleticism in a trio of demanding events: herd work, rein work and fence work. The reward for the best performance is the $125,000 first-place Open Championship paycheck, and the total payout for all the divisions at the show is expected to top $1.1 million. MANDAN, N.D. (July 1, 2017) – The first Xtreme Bulls at Mandan Rodeo Days was a memorable night, especially for three-time World Champion Sage Kimzey of Strong City, Okla. Kimzey won the night’s Xtreme Bulls competition and nearly $7,000, besting a field of 40 riders. He then came back to face Pearl Harbor, this year’s No. 1 rated bull, in a match ride with $20,000 on the line. The 22-year-old Kimzey, who rode in the second of four sections, scored 88 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Big Black Cat, a bull that has been featured at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals. Dakota Rodeo’s Chad Berger, a native of Mandan, brought some of his best bulls, including 24 who had been to one, or both, of bull riding’s most prestigious finals events, to make the bull riders earn their share of the $24,100 purse. The PRCA bull riders also came to play. Nine cowboys made a qualified ride, and seven scored 84 points or better. The finale of the night was the highly-touted match between Kimzey and Berger’s Pearl Harbor, the number one ranked bull in the PBR. After Kimzey’s 88 held for the Xtreme Bulls championship he was awarded a commemorative rifle and a pair of trophy spurs. He also took a victory lap around the arena in a RAM truck. AUGUST 2017
Sage Kimzey Then, in about five minutes, he was climbing into the chute onto the back of Pearl Harbor. There’s hardly another situation in professional sports when an athlete must refocus so quickly. Kimzey said the quick turnaround was not that difficult. “Ever since I accepted this challenge I’ve been thinking of nothing but Baldy,” he said, referring to Pearl Harbor, a baldfaced, 6-year-old, crossbred Brahma bull. The biggest challenges that Pearl Harbor, who bucks off more than 90 percent of those who try him, throws at a bull rider happen just out of the chute and at about the six-second mark, Kimzey said. “I stayed with him out of the gate and then when he hesitated at about six, I knew he would go either left or right, but he lands square on his feet so you don’t know which way he’ll go. I shifted a bit to the left, but he turned back into my (right) hand,” he said. Pearl Harbor managed to get Kimzey a little off-center toward the end of the ride, but he rode for eight seconds, then went to his second awards presentation of the night.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – ProRodeo Hall of Fame saddle bronc rider Winston Bruce passed away July 10. He was 79. Bruce’s PRCA career was highlighted by him winning 1937 the 1961 world championship. He qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 10 consecutive times from 195968, and was the reserve world champion in 1959 and 1965. Bruce was inducted in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1989, becoming the first Canadian competitor to receive that honor. He also was inducted in the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1995, and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in 1998.

Bruce also was the 1957-58 Canadian saddle bronc riding champion, and he won the saddle bronc riding title at Calgary (Alberta) and Cheyenne 2017 (Wyo.) in 1959. Bruce, in rodeo circles, was sometimes referred to as “a homemade bronc rider. This was in respectful reference to the fact he developed and perfected a wondrous and winning bronc riding style, under the direction of his father, Laurence, in home practice arenas. The son of a stock contractor and bronc rider, Bruce grew up around cowboys and rodeos. In May 1965, he put on his first Winston Bruce Rodeo College, a roughstock riding school. In 1969, Bruce made the move from competing to working in rodeo. He was named assistant arena director of the Calgary Stampede, and in 1970, he became arena director. From 1980 through 2002, he served as division manager for the rodeo, supervising the production of the Calgary Stampede and the rodeo stock breeding program.

President Donald J. Trump’s Six Months of America First According to the same study, 6.5 million industrial sector jobs could have been lost, including 3.1 million manufacturing sector jobs. In order to control regulatory costs, President Trump signed an Executive Order mandating that for every one new regulation, two old regulations must be eliminated. Through infrastructure reform and investment, the Trump Administration aims to dramatically reduce permit approvals for projects from 10 years to 2 years, spurring investment and job creation.
“Together, we are working every day for the citizens of this country: protecting their safety, bringing back their jobs and, in all things, putting AMERICA FIRST.” – President Donald J. Trump BRINGING ACCOUNTABILITY BACK TO GOVERNMENT: In six
months in office, President Trump has followed through on his promise to the American people to bring accountability back to government. President Trump fulfilled his promise to the American people by nominating and, after Senate confirmation, appointing Neil Gorsuch as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
President Trump implemented higher ethical standards to make sure his Administration works for the American people. President Trump signed an Executive Order implementing tough new lobbying standards for political appointees, including a five-year ban on lobbying and a lifetime ban on lobbying for foreign countries. President Trump has donated his salary, following through on his promise to the American people. To make sure the Government serves the needs of all Americans, President Trump has called for a comprehensive plan to reorganize the executive branch and has used his budget to begin to implement his plan. President Trump created the Office of American Innovation to streamline and improve the Government for future generations. SPURRING JOBS CREATION: President Trump’s impact on the economy has been immediate, spurring job creation across the country. President Trump signed the “Buy American and Hire American” Executive Order, prioritizing the interests of American businesses and workers. “Buy American” promotes American industry, protecting it from unfair competition by targeting the abusive use of waivers and exceptions to laws on the books. “Hire American” calls for the reform of our visa programs, ensuring that they no longer displace American 98
workers, while fully enforcing laws governing the entry of foreign workers. President Trump signed an Executive Order, making it easier for businesses to start and expand apprenticeship programs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has increased 17 percent since election day, hitting new highs 25 times this year already. Since January, the economy added 863,000 jobs, including 821,000 in the private sector. 79,000 construction jobs added since January.42,000 mining and logging jobs added since January. 41,000 manufacturing jobs added since January. CUTTING DOWN JOB KILLING REGULATIONS: Just six months in office, President Trump has taken historic action to eliminate wasteful and costly regulations that have stood in the way of hardworking Americans. The American Action Forum estimates a potential $70 billion in costs reductions from President Trump’s actions to cut back regulations. President Trump has signed 14 Congressional Review Act resolutions into law, ending burdensome Obamaera rules and regulations, more than all other Presidents combined. By withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord, President Trump protected America from a bad deal that would have harmed our economy. According to a study by NERA Consulting, meeting the Obama Administration’s obligations under the Paris Climate Accord could have cost the United States economy nearly $3 trillion.
OPENING UP AMERICAN ENERGY: In six months, President Trump has turned around America’s policy on energy production after years of opposition. President Trump has acted aggressively to increase exports of our energy resources to a global market. Updated guidance from the Treasury Department to allow the United States to export coal. Expedited the permitting and approval processes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals and exports, including the approval of the Lake Charles LNG terminal in Louisiana. President Trump has unleashed oil and gas development in the United States by expanding access to resources and the infrastructure needed to get them to market. Approved the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, creating over 42,000 jobs and $2 billion in earnings. Signed an Executive Order mandating future pipeline work to be done by American workers and with American steel. Expedited new pipeline approval and production, such as the New Burgos Pipeline to Mexico. Signed an Executive Order to extend offshore oil and gas drilling and reissued a leasing program to develop offshore resources. Boosting oil and gas development on Federal lands. The Environmental Protection Agency is reconsidering an Obamaera rule on greenhouse gas emissions that is estimated to cost oil and natural gas operators as much as $530 million annually. President Trump kept his campaign
AUGUST 2017
promise to coal miners and rolled back the previous Administration’s “Stream Protection Rule,” which targeted the beleaguered industry with estimated costs of at least $81 million a year. A FREE AND FAIR TRADE AGENDA: President Trump is putting America First in trade negotiations, pursuing reciprocal agreements with our trading partners so everyone benefits. One of President Trump’s first actions was to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, after the Obama Administration’s efforts failed to protect American workers. President Trump announced he will renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to better reflect our modern economy while benefitting all parties so involved. This week, the United States Trade Representative released its objectives for upcoming NAFTA negotiations. Last week, the President began the process of renegotiating the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Negotiations President Trump started with China on economic cooperation have already produced results for American businesses. For the first time in 14 years, American beef imports have returned to China. China is welcome to negotiate contracts to import American liquefied natural gas. President Trump delivered on his campaign promise to roll back the Obama Administration’s bad deal on Cuba that benefitted the Cuban regime at the expense of the Cuban people. RESTORING LAW AND ORDER TO IMMIGRATION: President Trump has prioritized enforcing immigration laws in his first six months to protect all Americans, ensuring that our immigration system treats everyone fairly. President Trump instituted tough immigration policies that have reduced illegal border crossings by 53 percent compared to the same time last year. The President ordered the hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, including 5,000 additional border patrol agents. Within the first 100 days of President Trump signing his executive orders on immigration enforcement, ICE conducted nearly 40 percent more Enforcement and Removal Operations
compared to the same time last year. Arrests of convicted criminal aliens climbed by nearly 20 percent in this time compared to the same time last year. In fiscal year 2017, ICE has removed over 2,700 criminal gang members, compared to 2,057 criminal gang members in all of fiscal year 2016. ICE has specifically targeted MS-13 criminal gang members for removal on immigration violations. To jumpstart construction on the border wall, the President ordered the Department of Homeland Security to use $100 million of unspent appropriations in its account for border security, fencing and infrastructure. President Trump directed executive agencies to employ all lawful means to enforce the immigration laws of the United States, including clamping down on sanctuary cities. Attorney General Jeff Sessions implemented new charging guidelines to end catch-and-release policies. President Trump ordered the creation of the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) office at DHS, ensuring that our Government can no longer ignore the victims of criminal acts by illegal aliens. PROVIDING FOR OUR NATION’S VETERANS: President Trump is making sure our veterans get the care they deserve after they have sacrificed for our country. Under President Trump, Department of Veterans Affairs fired over 500 employees, suspended 200, and demoted 33, as part of President Trump’s efforts to restore integrity and accountability to a department charged with supporting our Nation’s heroes. 22 senior leaders were disciplined. President Trump signed the Veterans Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act, enabling senior Veterans Affairs officials to fire failing employees while establishing important safeguards to protect whistleblowers. The Veterans Affairs administration is shifting veterans’ electronic medical records to the same system used by the Defense Department, ending a decades-old rift in sharing information between the two agencies. President Trump signed legislation allowing our veterans to receive care outside of the Veterans Affairs medical system. The Department of Veterans Affairs has acted to increase transparency and accountability by
launching an online “Access and Quality Tool” to provide veterans a way to access wait time and quality of care data. AMERICA FIRST FOREIGN POLICY AND NATIONAL SECURITY: In the first six months of his Administration, President Trump has put America First in world affairs and national security. During his historic speech in Poland, President Trump reasserted that America would defend its interests and allies after years of neglect by the previous Administration. President Trump brokered a ceasefire in southwest Syria as part of his commitment to end the conflict, reduce human suffering, and defeat ISIS. During his first international trip, President Trump supported the opening of a new “Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology” in Saudi Arabia, created to empower Muslim-majority countries to more effectively combat radicalization. President Trump has increased pressure on Iran to end its destructive and destabilizing actions in the Middle East, including its continued ballistic missile research. The Department of the Treasury sanctioned over 25 entities and individuals involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program, ensuring our ability to monitor potentially malicious actors while preventing future acts of terrorism. This week, the United States sanctioned sixteen entities and individuals that have supported Iran’s military and Revolutionary Guard Corps in the development of drones, fast attack boats, and other military equipment. President Trump has allowed the military to push back against threats to our interests and allies. In his first six months, President Trump worked with our partners and allies in the Middle East to defeat ISIS, leading to Iraqi forces recapturing Mosul. After the Syrian regime used chemical weapons against civilians, President Trump authorized strikes against the airbase that launched the chemical attacks, demonstrating our national commitment to preventing further atrocities. President Trump has lifted restrictions that had prevented the Secretary of Defense and our commanders in the field from fully using their judgement and expertise.

AQHA Past President Jim Shoemake dies of leukemia
“I think that if I could have a legacy, it would be that for one who loves and owns and raises Quarter Horses but is not an active participant in showing – that kind of individual can still make a positive contribution to the American Quarter Horse Association,” Jim said.
Jim Shoemake never competed in a show ring, raced, trained or judged horses; however he was truly passionate about horses. He decided to become involved with the Association to share his passion with his family and future generations to come. He proved that there’s a place for everyone at AQHA, especially those who simply love horses. The attorney who began his journey because of his passion for American Quarter Horses soon became an influential person in AQHA, the American Horse Council and the equine industry as a whole. “First thing you know, you’re on the board of the Missouri Quarter Horse Association, then you’re president of the Missouri Quarter
Jim Shoemake Horse Association – you know how those stories go,” Jim told The American Quarter Horse Journal in 2008, the year he was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. Jim’s story led him to a national director position with AQHA, then to a place on the AQHA Executive Committee in 1998 and the presidency in 2002-2003. Since 1994 he served on various AQHA committees. He was a
member of the international, finance, investment oversight, public policy and nominations and credentials committees, in addition to being a member of the racing council. After serving as AQHA president, Jim went on to serve as a chairman of the American Horse Council Board and later was elected as Trustee Emeritus and continued to serve AQHA as a member of the finance and the investment oversight committees. During Jim’s vice presidency, AQHA was sued over its embryo transfer rule. The Executive Committee eventually settled the embryo transfer lawsuit, allowing horse owners to register more than one of a mare’s offspring each year, with no damages awarded. But it was Jim’s experience with legal matter that became invaluable during that time of turmoil. “Getting that resolved, changing our rules and regulations to reflect that change, was something that I was proud of,” Jim said. “Having been for over 40 years a lawyer in a lot of courtrooms around the United States, I didn’t want some judge deciding what we were going to do, so that was why I thought (settling) was a good achievement.” Jim, who was licensed to practice in three states, said the settlement saved AQHA from the risk of possibly paying millions of dollars to the plaintiffs. Born into a farming family in Missouri, Jim graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and then joined the United States Army. After military service, he returned to St. Louis and married Rita, the younger sister of an old schoolmate, before entering law school at St. Louis University. After graduation, he worked in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of Justice before returning to St. Louis as an assistant U.S. attorney. He also
practiced privately with the law firm Guilfoil, Petzall and Shoemake. Jim considered himself as a family man first, and enjoyed sharing his horses with his grandchildren, as he shared them with his daughters before that. Jim and Rita’s youngest daughter, Sarah, showed extensively in amateur competition. She is an AQHA director and member of the judges committee. Sarah was also an AQHYA officer. Although neither Jim nor his two older daughters, Susan and Kathy, competed, they enjoy riding and breeding American Quarter Horses. The Shoemakes have owned an All American Quarter Horse Congress pleasure futurity champion, a band of broodmares, including a mare that has won three world championships, and a stallion, Dee Invitation by Invitation Only. “I love the Quarter Horses, and I find them to be more than anything the thing that relaxes me and brings me down to a tranquil sort of existence,” Jim said. “(My daughters) and I used to, particularly in the fall, saddle up and be gone so long – just riding through the woods, watching the leaves fall from the tree and just talking as father and daughters.” Jim hoped he beat a path of contribution for those who don’t care to compete in the show pen or on the racetrack to follow. “I think that if I could have a legacy, it would be that for one who loves and owns and raises Quarter Horses but is not an active participant in showing – that kind of individual can still make a positive contribution to the American Quarter Horse Association,” Jim said. “I hope that my story will serve as inspiration to others who aren’t exhibitors or trainers but who can make a real contribution through their business experience, their intellect, their enthusiasm, their energy, and that’s what I’d like to portray.”

forgotten, or those who don’t want you to remember—what a great America means. That is driving everything we do.” If the Trump administration has one overarching goal, it’s to Make America Great Again. But what does this mean? It means we are promoting MAGAnomics—and that means sustained 3% economic growth. For most of our nation’s
agenda—if MAGAnomics is allowed to work—we will have set the stage for the greatest revival of the American economy since the early 1980s. It will remind Wickenburg Area Real Estate Showcase people—including those who have

modern history, a healthy American economy meant one that grew at roughly 3.5%. That was the average growth rate between the late 1940s and 2007. Since then, it has hardly topped 2%. The difference between those two growth rates is staggering. If the American economy had grown at only 2% between the end of World War II and 2000, average household income would have been roughly $26,000 instead of $50,000. Over the next 10 years, 3% growth instead of 2% will yield a nominal gross domestic product that is $16 trillion larger, federal government revenues $2.9 trillion greater, and wages and salaries of American workers $7 trillion higher. For merely suggesting that we can get back to that level, the administration has been criticized as unrealistic. That’s fine with us. We heard the same pessimism 40 years ago, when the country was mired in “stagflation” and “malaise.” But Ronald Reagan dared to challenge that thinking and steered us to a boom that many people thought unachievable. In the 7½ years following the end of the recession in 1982, real GDP grew at an annual rate of 4.4%. That is what a recovery looks like, and what the American economy is still capable of achieving. The focus of MAGAnomics is simple: Grow the economy and with it the wealth of, and opportunity for, all Americans. MAGAnomics is for everyone, but especially for those who left for work this morning in the dark but came home after their kids were asleep. It’s for those who are working part-time but praying for a full-time job. It’s for folks whose savings are as exhausted as they are. This president hears you. He knows America’s greatness doesn’t spring from higher taxes or unnecessary regulations or broken welfare programs. It doesn’t come from government at all. It comes from you.

AQHA worked to help eliminate the use of illegal performance-enhancing medications.
AQHA opposes the newly introduced version of the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017.
While AQHA strongly supports uniformity in the horse racing industry, it is unable to support the latest version of the newly introduced legislation. On May 25, Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) introduced the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017 to the House of Representatives. In summary, the bill requires “a uniform anti-doping and medication control program to be developed and enforced by an independent Horseracing AntiDoping and Medication Control Authority.” While the American Quarter Horse Association strongly supports uniformity in the horse racing industry, it is unable to
