‘Yellowstone’ Renewed For Season 3, Josh Holloway Joins Cast
By Nellie Andreeva
On the eve of Yellowstone’s second season premiere tonight, Paramount Network has ordered a 10-episode third season of its flagship drama starring Kevin Costner. Joining the show for a major recurring role in Season 3 is Lost and Colony alum Josh Holloway, Deadline can reveal
exclusively.. Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Oscar winner Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and
America’s first National Park. In a season-long arc, Holloway will play Roarke Carter, a handsome, charming, shaggyhaired hedge fund manager with ambitious plans in Montana. The first season of Yellowstone averaged 5.1 million total viewers per episode, making it 2018’s most-watched new cable series and

ranking second across all cable TV series for the year. In addition to a ratings juggernaut, Yellowstone also has become a brand-defining series for Paramount Network, setting the creative direction for the newly launched network. “We really want things to be cinematic with really great storytelling and have complex, nuanced, complicated characters where the setting is almost like a prime character of the whole piece,” Kent Alterman, President of Comedy Central, Paramount Network, and TV Land, told Deadline in May about the vision for Paramount Network. “The best example of that is Yellowstone. It’s very cinematic. It has a movie star in Kevin Costner. It’s got really deep, rich, complicated characters, the great interpersonal family relationships, and it can just keep exploring a lot of different stories with those characters.” Yellowstone headlines Paramount Network’s scripted roster, which also includes the upcoming series Paradise Lost (working title) starring Josh Hartnett; 68 Whiskey, from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment; and the new Darren Star dramedy Emily in Paris, headlined by Lily Collins. Yellowstone is co-produced by 101 Studios. Executive producers are John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser and Bob Yari.

Outlaw Wins Last Cowboy Standing In Cheyenne
By Jonathan Eisen
Hollywood could not have written a better script.
One year ago here in Cheyenne, Chase Outlaw was pulled down on a bull named War Cloud (Peggy VanCleve), breaking 30 bones in his face, requiring emergency surgery to insert 11 plates and 68 screws. Tonight, in front of a raucous crowd at Cheyenne Frontier Days, he was the Last Cowboy Standing, winning the prestigious PBR major, taking home a paycheck of $156,856.41, and 875 world points. World Finals The Arkansas cowboy who was advised by some to find another profession is now the No.1 bull rider in the world. “What doesn’t break you will build you, and I owe it all to the man upstairs,” Outlaw said. “He’s not done with me.” Outlaw’s monster performance in Round 2 – a remarkable 93.5-point ride aboard Smooth Wreck (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Diamond Willow) – earned him the high marked ride of the year and helped carry him into the final three rounds. Smooth Wreck earned the title of YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event with his outstanding 46.25-point bull score catapulting the bovine athlete into first place in the Yeti World Championship Bull race. Outlaw’s other qualified ride came in Round 4 when he rode Rising Sun (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) for 90.5 points. The 27-year-old came off before the 8 in Round 3 on Budakon (Hart Cattle Company) and in Round 5 atop Cochise (Jane Clark/Gene Owen). Lucas Divino (Nova Crixas Goias, B) finished second at PBR’s debut at Cheyenne Frontier Days after earning a spot in Round 5 based on his aggregate score at the end of Round 4. He conquered Stretch (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/ Heald Pro Bulls) in Round 2 where he recorded an impressive 89.25 points and M.A.G.A (TNT Bucking Bulls/Hart Cattle Co) for 88.5 points in Round 3. Divino hit the dirt after only 4.38 seconds in Round 4 on South Texas Gangster (Dakota Rodeo/ Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/ Chad Berger), and in Round 5 two-time World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser(D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co.) dispatched the Brazilian before the buzzer. Divino pocketed $21,882.5 and 365 world points. After the event, he moved from No. 18 to No. 10 in the world standings. Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) rode his Round 1 victory to a third-place finish for the event. Despite being bucked off his Round 2 bull Heartbreak Kid (D&H Cattle/Buck Cattle/Erwin Cattle) and Red Moon (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) in Round 3, the Texas cowboy picked up a $10,600 paycheck and 125 world points. Davis remains No. 6 in the world standings. 2017 Rookie of the Year Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) picked up a total of 95 world points, along with a $4,612.82 check for his fourth-place finish. The 22-year-old covered Big City (Plummer/Hart Cattle Co.) in Round 2 for 87.25 points. The Brazilian came down in Round 3 off of Hocus Pocus (D&H Cattle/Barthold/ Almand), and in Round 4 Heavy D (Paradigm Bull Company) proved to be too much bull for Leme, who fell from No. 1 in the world standings, to No. 2. Cody Teel (Kountze, Texas) rounded out the top 5 after riding Smooth Operator (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) for 91.75 points in Round 2. He came down early off Oz (Hart Cattle Company) in Round 3. He collected 75 world points and $4,189.74. Teel entered and left the weekend at No. 5 in the world standings. The Top 35 bull riders in the world will now head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Express Ranches Classic presented by Osage Casino at the BOK Center August 10-11. The action from Rounds 2-5 in Cheyenne will be available on RidePass starting at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 24. 8

Outlaw: ‘This Has Been Harder For My Family Than It Is For Me’
By Justin Felisko
Brittany Outlaw was sitting inside Cheyenne Regional Medical Center on July 23, 2018, when Dr. William Wyatt walked into the hospital room and explained to her, as well as Chase Outlaw’s wife, Nicole, that her brother was getting rushed into emergency facial reconstructive surgery. Brittany shook her head and tried to comprehend what Dr. Wyatt was trying to say.
“I am going to have to see a picture because I don’t understand what it is you are talking about,” Brittany recalled. “I am going to need to see a picture.” Wyatt then pulled up the X-ray. Her brother’s face was a mangled and marred mess, 30 bones shattered courtesy of War Cloud during the PBR’s Touring Pro Division event at Cheyenne Frontier Days. “Whenever he showed the X-rays and started showing and pointing to where all the bones in his face were broken, we were speechless,” Brittany said late Tuesday night on the dirt at Cheyenne Frontier Days, tears rolling down her face. “Me and Nicole thought, ‘What is really going on right now?’” Next was a 12-hour emergency surgery that featured 68 screws, 11 plates and four pieces of surgical mesh to reconstruct Chase's face. On the exact 1 year anniversary of Chase Outlaw’s life-altering wreck, Brittany was once again speechless. So too was Nicole. Chase Outlaw had just been crowned the 2019 Last Cowboy Standing Tuesday night, 365 days after they sat in the hospital just two miles away, unsure of what Outlaw’s future may entail. Both Brittany and Nicole had tears in their eyes once again in Cheyenne, but this time their tears were a result of happiness and joy and not out of fear and uncertainty. “I am crying tears because this time last year I was scratching my head wondering what the next step was going to be,” Brittany said. “Not even for Chase, but for our whole family because bull riding is such a big part of our life. 10
“It has always been first priority, and to think we might not be able to do that again was scary. Just the emotions I have right now. Being excited and happy tears is totally different from what it was last year.” Nicole, who has been nothing but a true pillar of strength for the Outlaw family in the past year, could not help but also hold back her own tears as she looked at her husband holding his Last Cowboy Standing buckle. Chase Outlaw had regained the world No. 1 ranking for the second time since his career was forever changed last year. This time, though, he did so by winning the first PBR Major of his career and $156,856.41 thanks to a heroic effort inside the same arena that almost became his career’s gravesite. “I am just speechless,” Nicole said. “Some will say it is unbelievable. It is not unbelievable. Just look at what he has been doing. It is crazy. It is a lot of emotion right now.” ‘MY FAMILY DESERVES THIS’ – Chase Outlaw Chase Outlaw sat inside the empty locker room at Cheyenne Frontier Days underneath the grandstands just past 11 p.m. Tuesday night. A year ago, Outlaw was being loaded into an ambulance 50 or so yards away from where his family was waiting for him to get changed on Tuesday night. In attendance this week in Cheyenne was Chase’s sister (Brittany), his wife (Nicole), his children (Chloe, Hayes and Cash), his father, Greg, and a few other close friends and family. “Man, the last 12 months have been a whirlwind,” Outlaw said. “To come back from the biggest devastation to the biggest win of my career is special.” The journey of the past year, and especially in the last 48 hours in Cheyenne, has been very much focused around Outlaw’s return to the scene of his devastating wreck. However, the emotional toll of the past year and his own storybook comeback is one that goes well beyond him. It is also about his family. It is about the worry and the fear Brittany and Nicole experienced
on July 23, 2018 and those days sitting in the hospital room, waiting for Outlaw to come around and be released following 12-plus hours of surgery. It was the harrowing phone call that Chase’s father, Greg, received a year ago in the middle of the night. The phone call every parent fears. So as Outlaw received that Last Cowboy Standing belt buckle – one that his daughter Chloe quickly claimed as her own on the dirt – he was quick to say that his victory in his return to Cheyenne is far from only about him. Being the Last Cowboy Standing was a thank you to his family. For all of the people that stayed in his corner when the first thing they were greeted with in Cheyenne last year was fear, uncertainty and heartbreak. “It was harder for them than it was for me because I knew how strong of a mindset I had and I knew how strong I was,” Outlaw said. “For them to sit back and see somebody they love, and know that they really couldn’t do nothing about it, I know it was hard on them. It goes back to I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for my family getting me down the road as a kid. To have my dad here, my wife, my sister and all of my kids here means the world. “For me to come over and push myself over the top and come back and do this. This is paying my gratitude back to them, everyone that stood beside me through the thick and thin.” ‘CHASE HAS BEEN TOUGH ALL HIS LIFE’ – Greg Outlaw Greg Outlaw still remembers the panic that was running through his head when the door of the family’s 1982 Chevrolet 3/4 ton pickup door slammed shut. Chase was maybe 4 years old at the time, and there was his tiny hand caught in the door. Instead of crying though, Chase didn’t even seem to care or notice. “He didn’t even cry,” Greg said with a chuckle Tuesday in Cheyenne. “Oh, he has been tough his whole life. He could take anything. He has been tough all his life. Ever since diapers.” Greg readjusted his circular glasses after watching his son talk about his
AUGUST 2019
journey from the hospital room in Cheyenne to being crowned the Last Cowboy Standing. He too had to wipe away some tears seeing his son come full circle. “I about broke up,” Greg said. “This is special, man. I will tell you what. It has been a long, hard road. That boy has guts, now let me tell you. He had a fire in him ever since he come off that injury, and I am telling you, it has made a bigger and better man out of him. “He has had the eye of the tiger in him ever since, and I didn’t really see it in him. He had it before, but he never had it at this level now. It is unreal.” Chase is a third generation bull rider. Greg rode at the amateur level, joking he was nowhere good enough to ever attempt to go pro, and Chase’s grandfather also rode bulls. He always knew of the inherent risks that were associated with the sport, but that did not make anything easier for him when he received the phone call last year that Chase was about to head into emergency surgery. “I knew when I got the call in the middle of the night that something was wrong,” Greg said before pausing to compose himself. “It was upsetting, but I talked to him on the phone and he said he was alright. He said he had a little head injury, but I don’t think any of us knew how serious it was at the time.” Seventy-five days later, Outlaw returned to competition, and Greg could tell his son was forever changed. And for the better. “When he started getting on them again,” Greg said. “He started riding them and carrying the fight to them. I could see a different eye of the tiger in him." ‘JUST THE LOOK ON HIS FACE’ – Brittany Outlaw Brittany quickly yelled at Chase and the family. “Hey, we aren’t done yet. We now need to get a photo of us!” Chase and his family can now have a new favorite photo from Cheyenne to replace all the negative images of X-rays, broken bones, wrecks and everything else associated with Cheyenne that has been littered across their social media feeds in the past
year. “Last year was such a traumatic moment, and to have the whole family here, it is unbelievable,” Brittany said. “I can’t even fathom it right now. My dad came out for this. We have all the kids.” So when does Brittany think her brother developed the toughness and the perseverance that was on display in Cheyenne? “He was a tough kid when he came out of the womb I think,” Brittany said with a laugh. “He was always tough.” Chase was always causing a ruckus and fearlessly running rapid. His cowboy boots would last three months at most, and the family’s home in Hamburg, Arkansas, featured stacks of wrecked out cowboy hats. “A cowboy hat? Maybe it lasted a month,” Brittany said. “You will not believe the amount of cowboy hats stacked up at home with the tops blown out of them from him taking them and pulling them down on the top of his head. “He was always rough and tough.” It is why Brittany knew, when she sat her brother down once they returned to Arkansas from the hospital last year, that any talk about his future was likely still going to involve bull riding. Brittany knew her brother was
going to be thinking about making a return, but she wanted him to know the family had his back if he would be unable to. Even before Chase was allowed to leave the hospital, he was adamant that he would return to competition and qualify for the 2018 PBR World Finals, which he eventually would accomplish in only one month’s work. Regardless, Brittany felt she had to sit down with her brother and let him know it was OK if the best decision would be to hang up his bull rope. His response was all she needed to know that he would be OK. “I told him, ‘You don’t have to go back if you don’t want to,’” Brittany said. “If you want to hang your hat, we will figure it out as a family. We will pull it together and we will figure something out.” Then she saw Chase’s face. The face that was mauled and bruised and broken was becoming hard and determined. “Just the look on his face,” Brittany said. “Whenever I asked him that question, it was just a different light in his eyes that, ‘I am not giving up that easy. Nothing will hold me down that easy.’ “It is always frustrating to hear the story over and over because it was
such a hard time for our family. But to make a comeback like this, we have it behind us now and are on a different path now.” ‘NOTHING AT THIS RATE WILL STOP HIM’ – NICOLE OUTLAW Nicole about jumped out of her seat a little bit too much Tuesday night when Outlaw rode world No. 1 bull Smooth Wreck for a career-high 93.5 points on the premier series. A month ago, Outlaw rode Smooth Wreck for 94.75 points during Chad Berger’s $125,000 Team Challenge event during the premier series break. The 93.5 points pushed Outlaw right back into contention at Last Cowboy Standing after he bucked off American Made (5.62 seconds) in Round 1. “I was on the edge of my seat the whole time,” Nicole said. “When he rode him, I wasn’t surprised. I always think Chase is going to ride. It is never a doubt in my mind, but we were so excited.” Outlaw was then bucked off by Budakon (4.3 seconds) in Round 3, but was given new life in the progressive elimination event when only Lucas Divino made the 8-second mark in Round 3. Therefore, Outlaw advanced to Round 4 alongside Divino, Luciano de Castro and Jose Vitor Leme. Outlaw pushed himself
AUGUST 2019
into the event aggregate lead for good by riding Rising Sun for 90.5 points. Divino, Castro and Leme all bucked off in Round 4, which led to Outlaw and Divino squaring off in Round 5. Cochise bucked off Outlaw in 2.74 seconds, and Divino lasted only 5.08 seconds on three-time World Champion SweetPro’s Bruiser, which led to Outlaw being crowned the Last Cowboy Standing seeing as he was winning the event aggregate. World Finals Outlaw earned 875 points toward the world standings to open up a 430.84 points lead on No. 2 Leme heading into the upcoming Big Sky, Montana, Touring Pro Division Major event on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (RidePass). “Nothing, at this rate, will stop him,” Nicole said. “He is in it to win it. He just won’t stop until he does.” Chase does not plan on slowing down or resting on his laurels now that he has successfully returned to Cheyenne and regained the world No. 1 ranking. “We are still hungry,” Chase said. “The wreck is gone, but that is still a possibility. It is in the back of my mind. I know each time can be your last time. Since I am a year out of the wreck doesn’t mean I will slack off. 11

‘The Last Cowboy’ Ropes Paramount Network’s Biggest Unscripted Premiere Since 2015
By Erik Pedersen Co-Managing Editor DEADLINE The premiere of Paramount Network’s new competition series from the co-creator of its hit drama Yellowstone drew 801,000 viewers in Live+3 last week. That makes Wednesday’s airing of Taylor Sheridan’s The Last Cowboy the cable net’s most-watched reality bow since Ink Master: Redemption in September 2015. The Last Cowboy increased the network’s 2019 primetime average by double digits across all demos — ranging from a .28 in 18-49 (+19%) to a .39 for women 25-54 (+43%). It also ranks as the top premiere of any Paramount Net series debut since Yellowstone in June 2018. Produced by Truly Original, The Last Cowboy follows the real-life men and women who compete on the professional reining circuit – a Western-based competition where riders guide horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops as they prepare for the biggest bout in the sport’s history: “The Run for a Million.”

They moved to their new ranch in Scottsdale a year ago, after selling their huge ranch in Oklahoma. Craig can be an intense trainer and often yells at the people he trains, but he also has a softer, more emotional side. In 2017, when he finally won the NRHA Futurity competition, the last big event he hadn’t yet won, he couldn’t stop crying. Ginger sits on the board of the NRHA along with Tom McCutcheon. She also runs the family business. Of the Schmersals’ four children, two live at home. Addy and Brandon are adopted. Addy’s a horse trainer in the making, while Brandon mountain bikes. The family lives 10 minutes from Andrea and his wife Tish, but they don’t get along. Craig may greet Andrea at a competition, but he’ll get no response. One of Andrea’s clients has recently moved over to the Schmersals, so Craig and Ginger speculate that may be the reason behind some of the animosity.

In 2005, he and his wife Adrienne built their own facility, and their own house, with their own hands -- plumbing, electric and all. Jason and Adrienne met in third grade and got married right after high school. The couple has four children. Jason has about 20 training horses and owns two of them. He does not admit any non-pros to his ranch, giving up a revenue stream embraced by many of his peers in order to focus on training his show horses. He is a fierce competitor, but he’s also good friends with a number of the other open riders, especially Casey and Jordan Larson. That said, he does everything possible to avoid Casey during events because he finds Casey is unable to shut up. Jason and Adrienne are looking to buy a 350-acre ranch in Oklahoma and move their family, their horses and Jason’s parents there, but this goal will require a lot of winning. Even for a proven winner like him, it will be tough. He almost lost a top horse when Andrea tried to buy it from Jason’s client behind Jason’s back; and last year, he lost two of his best horses when his clients sold them to Craig. As a result, he’ll have to take a stallion out of retirement

He’s married to Karen and has two stepchildren, Emma and Alec, from Karen’s previous relationship. Together, Karen and Matt have a son, Ryan, with only a fleeting interest in horses. Karen was a hairdresser for 20 years, but now she helps Matt with bookkeeping and communicates with clients. She also spends a fair amount of time discussing the other riders and their wives. Matt’s hungry and thinks that’s what differentiates him from guys like Andrea and Craig. He doesn’t have a solid horse for the invitational yet, so he expects to haggle a lot for the perfect horse leading up to the competition. Whenever he has been able to get his hands on a good horse, he’s performed at a top level, as evidenced by his gold medal in the 2006 World Equestrian Games.

YOUNGEST RIDER EVER TEAM U.S.A. FOR THE FEI WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES AUBREY, TEXAS Cade understands the immense advantage of coming from a lineage of reining masters. All his life, he’s been soaking up reining tips from his Hall-of-Fame grandfather Tim McQuay. He likes spending time and having fun with Tim because doesn’t try to parent him nearly as much as his legendary father Tom does. Cade himself just turned pro, but unlike most young pro riders, he doesn’t need to scramble to find decent horses to ride. In fact, he has the exact opposite problem: He has six top-level horses to choose from because clients want him to train their horses himself. Cade started showing horses when he was seven years old, and he was already winning major events by the time he was 15. As a pro, he’s in a hurry to show at as many events as he possibly can, especially if the purse is high. At times, this impatience causes friction with his parents, and even though he’s quickly climbing up the ranks, Cade still needs mom and dad’s approval to enter any competition. 16

2018 NRHA PROFESSIONAL HORSEWOMAN OF THE YEAR -- GAINESVILLE, TEXAS Abby is good-humored, confident and humble but also well aware she’s an underdog. She recently started renting stalls on a ranch run and staffed entirely by women. Two months prior, she was a trainer at Casey’s ranch, where she worked for five years. Abby decided to move on from Casey’s ranch after she won a major competition with one of his mares. She thought the win was a sign she should go out on her own, but Casey felt betrayed, and her departure turned out to be prolonged and awkward, even though Abby thinks the six-month advance notice she gave Casey was fair. Now, she does everything by herself -- with a bit of help from her dog Tough and her Canadian apprentice Jamie. Everything is overwhelming at Abby’s new place, but she believes she has the resilience to make it work. Her parents were not supportive of her passion for riding horses when she was young, so she bought horses with her own savings, trained them and then sold them for a profit to make a living. It worked out for her, but if a single one of her horses had not panned out, she would’ve been dead in the water. She’s convinced this constant strife has made her tougher, and she’ll need all the toughness she can muster as she tries to succeed on her own.

The distance he keeps from everybody and the fact he beats them so often has turned him into the dark force of the NRHA circuit. He was born in Italy and started working with reining horses when he was four. He doesn’t see himself as a cowboy and believes he could just as easily be a race car driver or a tennis player. He prepares with a lot of intensity. As a result, he can be tough on his trainers, and he’s not afraid to raise his voice when someone strays from his instructions. Andrea’s wife Tish manages their business. She’s from SoCal and rides as a non-pro. They met while she was working for the Schmersals. Of their two sons, Luca is following in his father’s footsteps, while Jeremy is a top motocross prospect. Tish drives Jeremy to competitions, while Andrea works at home with Luca. Andrea cooks for his family every day, and once the work is done, he often cooks for employees, too. As a family, they are private and don’t socialize with the other riders, which has turned them into outsiders.
Tom McCutcheon Cast Member
NRBC OPEN CHAMPION; NRBC OPEN RESERVE CHAMPION -- AUBREY, TEXAS The McCutcheons are the dynasty of the reining horse universe. Tom is a million-dollar rider and a gold medalist at the World Equestrian Games. He sits on the board of the National Reining Horse Association, together with Ginger Schmersal. His father-in-law Tim McQuay is a reining legend and an NRHA Hall of Fame inductee. His wife Mandy rides as a non-pro, and together they operate one of the premier horse training, breeding and rehab facilities in the U.S. Their son Cade recently turned pro and is already on his way to becoming a million-dollar rider. The family’s ranch has 150 horses and includes a horse spa with a saltwater bath, underwater treadmill, massage equipment and air-conditioned stalls. Multiple injuries have turned Tom into a bionic man with two artificial hips and a recently replaced knee. He loves luxury and enjoys flying first-class and driving his Mercedes S600 AMG. And even though he spends much of his day on top of a sweating animal, he’s a germaphobe who won’t even touch a cup of coffee if someone else handled it.
Casey Deary Cast Member
2017 NRHA OPEN DERBY CHAMPION; 2015 NRHA OPEN FUTURITY CHAMPION WEATHERFORD, TEXAS Casey is, admittedly, the clown on the open rider circuit. His style of riding is different than anybody else's, and he likes to have a good time at events -- often at the expense of his own, or others', ability to focus. Regardless, he is one of the highest earners on the circuit. When he was a teenager, Casey was kicked and dragged by a horse; as a result, he lost multiple teeth. He had to survive toothless through high school and most of college and developed a sense of humor about it and laughed at himself. This quality is what his wife Nicole was attracted to. Now, they have four kids and own a ranch and horse training program, which Nicole runs. Casey likes to employ female trainers because he thinks they treat the horses better. He wants to develop two other trainers to show his clients' top horses. It would allow him to show nine horses an event, rather than the three he can show by himself. He trained Abby with this strategy in mind, but as soon as she won a major event with one of his best mares, she told him she was going out on her own. The episode still hurts, even as Casey works on developing two new train17 ers to fill Abby's old role.AUGUST 2019

Looking Back At Dr. J Pat Evans (1930-2019) Impact On The Western Sports World
By Justin Felisko
2018 Jim Shoulders Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Dr. J Pat Evans – a legendary contributor to the Western Sports community – passed away on July 22 at 88 years old. He is survived by his sons Kirk and Mike.
Below is a look back at Evans' legacy from when he was recognized for his contributions to the rodeo community last year during the PBR’s Heroes & Legends celebration.Dr. J Pat Evans was unable to be in attendance for the 2018 Heroes & Legends celebration, but he had one message to everyone in attendance and watching on RideTV and RidePass. “The cowboys are the toughest guys on the planet,” Evans said through Dee Chambliss, a family friend accepting the award on Evans’ behalf at South Point Hotel Casino & Spa. No matter how tough a cowboy or an athlete is, though, there comes a time when toughness is simply not enough. Even the strongest of cowboys need top-notch medical care, and that is where Evans became revolutionary for Western sports. RELATED: Evans dedicated his life to bringing sports med to Western sports In the 1970s, Evans, who is known as the grandfather of Western sports medicine, began covering rodeos for a friend, NFL star and proud cowboy Walt Garrison, who he had met while working for 19 years as a team physician for the Dallas Cowboys. At one of these events, he envisioned sports medicine for the professional rodeo athlete which became a reality in 1980 with the founding of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team Dr. Evans is one of the first physicians in the country to dedicate his medical practice to sports medicine, treating rodeo cowboys as any other professional athlete. He dedicated the later years of his career to creating a formal sports medicine program for the Western sports world. When the 20 PBR co-founders began the process of launching the PBR, they were certain that they wanted the Justin Sportsmedicine Team and Evans. “I grew up a real Dallas Cowboys fan, and I had seen J Pat on television even before I even knew he worked on any rodeo cowboys,” PBR co-
22
founder Cody Lambert told RideTV last year. “I get to rodeoing and J Pat shows up. For me to even be in the same room with somebody that knew all of those guys that were all heroes to me was really special.” The problem was Evans was closing in on retirement. He therefore recruited and trained Dr. Tandy Freeman, who has been the PBR’s on-site doctor since 1995. Freeman spoke highly of Evans during the Heroes & Legends induction ceremony. “I am here because of Dr. Evans,” Freeman said. “Not only to introduce him for this award, but back in the early 1990s he took me under his wing and mentored me, brought me into the Justin Sportsmedicine program. At the time, that was a unique organization providing professional athletes in the rodeo industry with medical and athletic training that compared to what they could get in the NFL and the NBA. “Dr. Evans was able to do that because he was an NFL and NBA doctor. He was the team physician for the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks.” Freeman has been long associated as the PBR doctor, and he was the 2016 recipient of the Jim Shoulders Lifetime Achievement Award. However, if not for Evans, PBR athletes today would not be receiving such great care from himself and the PBR sports medicine team. “Most of the athletes don’t know who Dr. Evans is, and a lot of the fans here probably don’t know who Dr. Evans is. This is an introduction to a guy who is responsible for athletes in this sport having longer careers, better careers and coming out on the other end a little bit better than their predecessors did because Dr. Evans put this program together.” Freeman said it his goal to live up to the standard that Evans set in the 1980s and 1990s. Every day the PBR sports medicine team tries to improve and get better. “We have tried over the years to improve it and to live up to the standards that he set,” Freeman said. “We do as good, or as better a job then you would find in an NBA locker room, NFL locker room, NHL or any of those big sports.” By the end of his speech, Freeman choked up. Evans had a tremendous impact on Western sports, but he also has left a lasting impression on Freeman. “Dr. Evans is my friend. He is my mentor. “And he is a hero.”

Yet this premier show never stops innovating. This year, exhibitors have even more opportunities for dynamic competition and desirable awards. Building on the popularity of Sun Circuit’s National Championship Tournaments last March, The AZ Fall Championship is debuting the Horsemanship West Bracket Tournament. Ranked horsemanship exhibitors from the 2019 National Championship summer rankings who are showing in the AQHA horsemanship at the Arizona Fall Championship will be eligible. The top 4 scores in Youth, Amateur and Select horsemanship after the first set of AQHA judges will advance to The Four where they will compete in a tournament style head to head competition. The champion in each division will win $500 and a trophy buckle. The reserve will win $250 and a logo’d chair. The summer rankings list will be out in late July. Ranch Riders are eligible for the new Ranch Horse Challenges with divisions for Open, L1 Open, Amateur and Select. Classes that can be counted for these high point awards include Halter, Ranch Trail, Ranch Riding and Ranch on the Rail. The champion in each division will be awarded a trophy buckle along with $500 while the reserve will take home a bronc halter and $400. Exhibitors love the elegant bronze AZFC Circuit Award trophies that are uniquely styled for each discipline. Other circuit awards include logo’d outerwear and Vendor Bucks. There are also 3 high point, non pro one horse/one exhibitor saddle awards for Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 exhibitors. Best of Show awards are back again this year. There is an All Around division for Open, Amateur, L1 Amateur, Select and Youth. Additionally, there is a Best of Show Reining & Cattle division for Open, Amateur and Youth. It’s not just the big prizes that attract people to AZFC. The inviting atmosphere and excellent facilities are on everyone’s Top Ten list. Exhibitors stay cool and comfortable showing at AZFC.The majority of classes are held in the climate controlled Equidome and North HalI arenas and even outdoor classes benefit from covered arenas. This year the trail warm up gets a cool down by moving into the air conditioned South Hall. The schedule of classes offers just about everything for the AQHA enthusiast, spanning jumping to cutting, rail to ranch, plus a whole day of VRH. The schedule allows exhibitors plenty of time to socialize and partake of Scottsdale’s legendary dining, shopping and activities. This is the destination that non-showing spouses love. 30

WHY RISK IT
CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES HOW IT WORKS
A Service to Improve Your Footing
We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

SVAG FEI World Championships Young Riders Podium

Team USA posted a total composite score of 646 thanks to a great performance offered by Taylor Zimmerman and Wimpys Dolled Up, first to go for the United States. The duo nailed each and every maneuver required by pattern #5 closing their run with a great 220.5 score. “I knew riding in the warm up pen, and as soon as I walked in the show
AUGUST 2019
arena, that my mare was going to be good,” said Taylor. “She likes the big circles, has a lot of space to run in this big arena and I am on cloud nine, especially being here running for my team. Adding to Zimmerman’s great score was past FEI World Equestrian Games Team Gold medalist Cade McCutcheon’s 218 riding Smart Little Dunnit and Dani Latimer’s 207.5 score atop Could You Be Loved, a horse she loaned from Italian Letizia Tosetti. When the picture seemed to depict Team USA on the highest step of the podium, Axel Pesek and Uncle Sparky, the 2017 SVAG FEI World Championship Junior Individual gold medalists, came back with yet another outstanding performance paid back by the judges with a 220 which brought the composite score to a…646, thus tying with the American team. Before Pesek, teammate Margaux Legrand and Wound Up Whiz had closed their run with a 214.5 and third team member, Estelle Sole guiding RS Bloody Mary Spat had performed to a 211.5. “My horse was absolutely fantastic,” said Axel who also represented his country with his mount at the past FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon. But it wasn’t over yet and little did we know that the tie-breaker would have to be used for reserve and third place honors! In the last set of riders, Team Germany had anchor rider Michelle Maibaum and her Star Sailor Whiz ready to turn the cards on the table. The pair entered the show arena determined to give their best, and so they did. “Nobody told what score I had to post to beat the leading composite score and, although the pressure was on big time, I concentrated on my run,” she said at the end of her go. “On top of it all, since I’ve only had my horse for three months, I don’t know him very well, but he was really good for me and I am super happy that I made my team win the gold.” The total score for Germany, after Michelle and her mount scored a 217.5, went up to a 646.5 and the Gold was all theirs thanks to the performances of Germany’s Johannes Heil and Whizper Lil Gump BB (218), Franziska Engel riding her KD Whizoffthefuture (211). Unfortunately, Merrit Neben and Tin Whizin posted a zero.

took fifth place in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ of Great Britain on July 26 during the Longines Royal International Horse Show at the All England Jumping Course in Hickstead, England. Robert Ridland served as Chef d’Equipe for the team of Laura Kraut, Wilton Porter, Jessica Springsteen, and Catherine Tyree. “Everybody had good rounds today, but you need great rounds to win a Nations Cup,” said Ridland. “It just wasn’t meant to be today. It was a young team, with the exception of Laura, and this is why we sent these teams to [the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Sweden in] Falsterbo and Hickstead, to gain this type of experience over these types of courses and to experience the best competition that Europe has. All the other teams here today were fighting for spots for the [Longines FEI Jumping] Nations Cup Final.” Tyree, 25, of Chicago, Ill., turned in a clean round in round one and then a four-fault performance in round two for the team riding Bokai, Mary Tyree’s 13-year-old KWPN gelding. In the first five-star Nations Cup performance for her horse, Volage du val Henry, a 10-year-old Selle Francais mare owned by Stone Hill Farm, Springsteen(Los Angeles, Calif.) contributed two four-fault rounds. The 25-year-old Porter (Wellington, Fla.) guided Caletto Cabana, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Sleepy P Ranch LLC, to a rail in round one and a foot in the water in round two. Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) rode as the anchor on Confu, St. Bride’s Farm’s 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding, and had a rail down in each round. The U.S. team finished the two rounds on a score of 20. “You’re never happy when you finish fourth or fifth; you’d much rather end up on the podium. That’s what we aim for and we felt like we had a team that was capable of that. We just missed, but it still was a good day,” said Ridland.

Brad has been and continues to be a student of horsemanship, from colt starting to world class performance horses. ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo
It was a good night for reigning gold medalists at the Komatsu Equipment Days of ‘47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo presented by Zions Bank in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night with all three advancing for a chance at yet another gold medal. Three of last year’s gold medalists competed tonight and they didn’t disappoint the Utah fans. Looking to add more gold to their resumes are steer wrestler Justin Shaffer, saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss and barrel racer Hailey Kinsel. Kinsel of Cotulla, Texas, turned in the fastest time on the final night of preliminary action with a blistering time of 16.824 seconds. Tonight’s run was Kinsel and Sister’s quickest inside the Days of ’47 Arena over the last three years, setting yet another arena record. The reigning WPRA World Champion is looking to add more gold to her collection on Wednesday night. Kinsel and her fiancé PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood will both be back for the Gold Medal round. Taking second on the night was Michelle Darling aboard her great horse Martini with a time of 17.211. Darling of Medord, Okla., won the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) Titletown Stampede in Green Bay, Wis., to qualify for Salt Lake. 50

Death of a Cowboy, the Birth of a Legend The final, fateful days of John Ringo Several months after the Earps and Holliday left Arizona as fugitives, John Ringo decided to move to Tombstone (he had been living in San Simon and Galeyville). On July 2nd, Ringo met with the editor of the Tombstone Epitaph, who later wrote of their talk, “He said that he was as certain of being killed as he was of living then. He said that he might run along for a couple years more, and may not last two days.” Ringo’s prediction was not far off.

On January 17, 1882, John Ringo called out Doc Holliday but before a fight could ensue, police officer Jim Flynn grabbed Ringo from behind and arrested him, Doc and Wyatt. Taken to city court, Ringo and Doc were fined $32 each for carrying concealed weapons. The charge against Wyatt was dropped because he was a U.S. deputy marshal.
“He was recognized by friends and foes as a recklessly brave man, who would go any distance, or undergo any hardship to serve a friend or punish an enemy.” —Tombstone Epitaph, July 18, 1882

MYSTERIES IN THE BOUGH OF A TREE On July 13, 1882, John Ringo’s body was found seated in the bough of black jack oaks. The coroner’s report stated he had evidently lost his boots and had on “a pair of hose [socks] and an undershirt torn up so as to protect his feet.” While some who knew him could not believe he would take his own life, many others claimed Ringo “frequently threatened suicide.” While Wyatt Earp later claimed he came back from Colorado to kill Ringo, few historians believe him.

In the 1920s, Tombstone Deputy Billy Breakenridge, one of the last to see Ringo alive, visited the remote grave site and sat in the bough of the tree while a companion snapped a photo. When the film was developed, an eerie face could be seen floating above Breck’s head. Was it the ghost of Ringo? Some believe it is.

in 1979 and 1980 riding Royal Santana, who he showed to win the 1980 NCHA Non-Pro World Finals. During Moore’s two-year term as NCHA president, he was instrumental in seeing the Judges Monitor System put into practice. In addition, during his term, the NCHA Classic and Challenge, at that time separate classes, were integrated into the NCHA Derby

(Summer Spectacular) venue, and Moore won the first NCHA Challenge Non-Pro championship, showing Sana Doc, by Peppy San. Moore became interested in cutting competition in 1975, after retiring from his businesses, including a company that manufactured electric and acoustic guitars sold worldwide under the JacksonCharvel name. Trainer Dub Dale introduced Moore to the sport, and two years later, recommended a new direction. “I’ve taken you as far as I can take you,” Dale told Moore. “You need to get with the master, Matlock Rose.” “It wasn’t a real cordial relationship at first,” said Moore of his beginnings with Rose. “This guy started on me from the way I put a blanket on a horse. And all during this time, there was never a lot said between Matlock and me. But a mutual respect developed and it finally resulted in the fact that he became the closest male to me in my life, other than my father and my son.” Moore and Rose hauled together in 1977 and 1979, when Rose won the NCHA Open World Championships on Peponita, and Moore was riding Royal Santana and Senor Towie. In 1980, when Moore claimed the NCHA NonPro World Championship for the second consecutive year, his son, Tom Moore II, also coached by Rose, won the NCHA Youth World Championship. “There is no such thing as quit,” said Moore, reflecting on his connection with Matlock Rose. “You’ve got to be fiercely competitive in the cutting arena, just like in manufacturing. If you’re not, somebody is going to run over you.” No family services are planned for Tommy Moore, but his family suggested memorials in his name be made to Cook’s Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

PBR Athletes Join The U.S. Border Patrol BY : ANDREW GIANGOLA
Pandemonium is breaking in the school hallway, and Shorty Gorham is trying to stay calm.
Kids are tearing from the classrooms, screaming about a shooter. The PBR bull fighter knows he has to slow everything down, just like on the dirt during

his weekend job. But his heart rate is jacked. There’s a girl down, shot in the shoulder. An officer on the ground, too. He appears to be OK, pointing in the direction of the shots. Bursting into the classroom, Shorty sees a man putting a student into a headlock, a gun pressed to her head. Gorham’s leg starts burning. He’s been hit with gunfire from behind. Actually, Gorham has not been shot. And he’s not in the middle of a horrific school shooting-andhostage situation. The electric burn came from a device planted in his pocket. It was set off by a U.S. Border Patrol trainer watching Gorham deal with the traumatic situation from the middle of an octagon projecting a realistic 360-degree view of horror onto eight screens inside the U.S. Border Patrol Training Facility in Laredo, Texas. Gorham, who is sponsored by the U.S. Border Patrol, along with bull riders Cooper Davis, Sean Willingham and Keyshawn Whitehorse, spent a few days last week on the north bank of the Rio Grande, embedded with USBP agents to learn more about the PBR sponsor and share the experience on social media. The athletes participated in activities like CrossFit, firearms training, classroom instruction, field simulations, canine unit observation and patrols on boats and horses. “I feel like the Border Patrol is secretly training us without saying so, and then we’ll gladly go to work for them when we retire from bull riding,” Willingham said. While the octagon training that got the athletes’ hearts pumping was entirely simulated, the horse patrol with two dozen agents along five miles of the Rio Grande was an exercise in the kind of unpredictable, real-life danger that U.S. Border Patrol agents routinely deal with in their mission of securing the nation’s borders. others possibly in the area. to sneak individuals into the U.S.

The Youth are Our Future
By AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines
The Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show is just around the corner. After processing entries, AQHA is excited to announce that this will be the largest Ford Youth World in AQHA history! Total entries are up 180 compared to 2018, for a total of 3,660 entries competing at this year's show. More than 750 exhibitors from 43 states, three Canadian provinces, Australia, Costa Rica, Denmark and Poland will travel to Oklahoma City next week for their chance at taking home the coveted golden globe. In 2017, we added AdequanÂŽ Level 2 classes, and last year, we added the opportunity to earn 13-&-Under world champion honors in seven core classes. Both divisions have grown each year since their inception, allowing more youth exhibitors to be highlighted for their accomplishments in the arena. This year, we will welcome 308 first-time Ford Youth World exhibitors. T he Ford Youth World will be filled with fun events both in and outside of the arena, showing off the talents of our youth members. We hope you'll join us in Oklahoma City August 1-10, but if you can't make it to the show, be sure to watch the free live webcast, presented by Sundowner. Good luck to all of those competing! Bank of America Youth Excellence Seminar Wrap-up AQHA hosted AQHYA members from across the globe at the Bank of America Youth Excellence Seminar July 9-11 in Amarillo. Attendees had sessions with inspiring speakers, took part in a community service activity and participated in leadership learning events. They also elected the 2019-20 AQHYA Executive Committee and regional directors who play a major role in the youth association by planning events, participating in community service projects and spreading the word about our horse, youth activities and AQHYA. I'd like to personally congratulate the new AQHYA Executive Committee: President Sierra Walter of Hydro, Oklahoma First Vice President Justin Eddy of Rocheport, Missouri Second Vice President Claire Lee of McAllen, Texas Executive Member Delaney Dickens of Omaha, Nebraska Executive Member Richard John Shepard III of Harrington, Delaware These are very talented individuals, and I know they will represent our Association well! I also want to congratulate the newly elected AQHYA regional directors. During the Awards Banquet, we had the opportunity to award the 2018-19 AQHYA Executive Committee with $4,500 in scholarships; 2018-19 Second Vice President Charles Lee was also awarded the 2019 Wrangler ASPIRE award, a $1,000 award from AQHA Corporate Partner Wrangler given to an AQHYA member who excels in leadership and service. It is always an honor to be in the presence of these young leaders and watch them grow into young adults. They are the future of our industry, and I am proud to be a part of an Association that has such a bright future. 66

NFR Miller and Lord Finish in a Tie at Cheyenne
Cheyenne, Wyoming—There was nothing but sunny skies on Sunday in Cheyenne but that didn’t make the finish of the 2019 Cheyenne Frontier Days any less dramatic for the reigning champion Nellie Miller.
Exactly one year ago, Miller raced her roan phenom Sister around Frontier Park’s huge arena with hail pelting them, after waiting out a delay due to tornado warnings. The Cottonwood, California cowgirl earned her first win at the rodeo known worldwide as the Daddy of ‘Em All. Miller and Sister were back to try for the repeat and had followed a similar track to the final go round. They won the opening go during the slack, just as they did a year ago, but this time the path was longer thanks to Cheyenne’s change to a tournament style format with one extra sudden death round from previous seasons. No averages in 2019 meant that only the fastest each day during Frontier Days survived to compete again. After a progressive round held in slack and a quarter finals through six performances, 24 of more than 180 cowgirls were left standing— or running as it were—for the title of Cheyenne Champion, including Miller. The Daddy wrapped up over the weekend with two performances of semi-finals action and the culmination of it all on Sunday for the Championship Round.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed an agricultural bill, which increases annual funding for the veterinary medicine loan repayment program (VMLRP) from $8 million to $9 million. The U.S. House of Representatives passed an agricultural bill, which increases annual funding for the veterinary medicine loan repayment program (VMLRP) from $8 million to $9 million. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is applauding the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of an agricultural spending bill, which increases annual funding for the veterinary medicine loan repayment program (VMLRP) to $9 million. The new funds, which the association worked closely with Congress to secure, will help close veterinary access gaps by placing additional food animal veterinarians in rural areas of the U.S. “The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program has been a tremendous success in connecting food animal veterinarians in rural communities that so badly need their services and public health veterinarians that are essential to maintaining the health of animals and humans alike,” says AVMA president, John de Jong, DVM. “This funding is an important step toward helping the program expand its reach. We’re grateful to all of the lawmakers who in a bipartisan effort are committed to championing this program.” Further, the bill maintains $3 million in funding for the Veterinary Services Grant Program, which provides grants to support educational activities and practice enhancement initiatives for food animal veterinary services.

2019 BLACK MOUNTAIN EMERGENCY WILD BURRO ROUND-UP
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting an emergency gather of wild burros, between June through August 2019, to respond to increasing public safety concerns .
Purpose of Gather: The purpose of this gather is to remove nuisance burros that are damaging private property, fences, waterlines, troughs, eating supplemental feed for livestock, and creating a public safety hazard for motorists along roadways. The Bureau of Land Management has received complaints from private landowners and the National Park Service (NPS) Lake Mead National Recreation Area, pertaining to numerous wild burros that are creating nuisance situations on private and NPS lands. ls of Gather: The BLM plans to remove 350 nuisance burros from private and NPS lands within the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) between the months of June and August 2019

by drawing the burros into a fenced area. A contractor and BLM staff will set temporary corrals on private and NPS lands, and will remove them once the operation is complete. The BLM’s priority is to conduct safe, efficient, and successful wild burro gather operations while ensuring humane care and treatment of all animals. The BLM will use the best available science and handling practices for wild burros while meeting the overall gather goals and objectives in accordance with its Comprehensive Animal Welfare Policy. Because animals are reluctant to approach the trap site when there is too much activity, only essential gather operation personnel will be allowed at the trap site during gather operations.
The Black Mountain HMA is in northwestern Arizona, 15 miles west of Kingman. The area parallels the eastern shoreline of the Colorado River for 80 miles, from the Hoover Dam south along I-40. The current Appropriate Management Level for the Black Mountain HMA is 478 burros.

Soring bill passes in House of Representatives
The PAST Act went through in a landslide vote and will now move to the U.S. Senate for consideration
A measure to end the practice of soring horses has passed by a vote of 333 to 96 in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a longtime advocate of the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, expressed its satisfaction in the passing of the legislation. “AVMA has worked with Congress for many years to stop the cruel and inhumane act of horse soring,” says association president John de Jon, DVM. “We’re delighted to see lawmakers working across the aisle to advance this important legislation and provide horses with the protection from abuse they so badly need.” AVMA says soring continues to be a pervasive issue, especially in Tennessee’s walking horse industry, where deliberate pain is inflicted to exaggerate a horse’s gait to gain advantage in horse shows. Soring methods include the long-term application of harsh chemicals to horses’ legs, the grinding of their soles to expose sensitive tissue, the insertion of hard objects such as nails between horses’ shoes or pads and their soles, and the use of chains or other “action devices.” Although soring was made illegal in the 1970s, AVMA reports violations often go undetected because trainers and owners are able to exploit loopholes in the law, or form relationships with inspectors who overlook them. “We applaud the House for overwhelmingly passing the PAST Act to end this barbaric and indefensible practice that has marred the horse show world for decades,” says Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action. “Today’s landslide vote is a powerful signal to the Senate that it should saddle up and end this cruelty to horses… once and for all.” “Thank you particularly to Representatives Kurt Schrader and Ted Yoho for their efforts on this issue,” Dr. de Jon adds. “We are looking forward to working with Senate lawmakers to further support this legislation and we won’t stop until the PAST Act becomes law and the soring of horses gets left in the past.”

2019 Extreme Mustang Makeover trainer, Craig Moore, chosen as Wild Card at 2020 Road to the Horse
The Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM) and Road to the Horse (RTTH) partnered up this year to offer a 2019 Extreme Mustang Makeover competitor a spot in the 2020 RTTH Wild Card Competition. When the dust settled after the two 2019 EMM events were held in Ocala, Florida, and Lexington, Kentucky, a list of competing trainers was presented to Road to the Horse.
After deliberation, RTTH chose Craig Moore of May, Texas, to be the lucky and final Wild Card competitor. Moore will be joining RTTH Wild Cards Wylene Davis and Cole Cameron to complete the competition trio. In the Road to the Horse competition, elite clinicians from around the world build a relationship with an untouched 3-year-old American Quarter
Horse and face off for the World Championship of Colt Starting title. The Wild Card competition allows first-time competitors the opportunity to participate. During the 2020 event, they will each start an untouched 6666 Ranch colt, during three days of competition, in true Road to the Horse style. The winner is guaranteed a muchsought-after position in the Road to the Horse World Championship
competition in 2021. “I am extremely humbled and excited to be a Road to the Horse 2020 Wild Card competitor. This is an opportunity that I have been praying about!” said Moore. “When I got the phone call that I was being offered the position, it was a bit surreal to say the least! It’s an honor to be part of this amazing event.” Moore was introduced to horses at a young age when his mother, who was a beautician, traded riding lessons for manicures. From that moment, it was evident that horses would be a huge part of his life. Moore’s parents soon purchased his first horse; a 23-year-old grade gelding named Flash. Flash was just the beginning, and riding quickly turned to participation in
high school and college rodeo events. After working for many years as a paramedic and training horses part time, Moore recently moved to Texas to pursue his dreams of training horses full time, alongside girlfriend Katie Ketterhagen. The couple now resides in May, Texas, where they teach horsemanship lessons and compete with their American mustangs. “The Mustang Heritage Foundation couldn’t be more excited to have our own EMM trainer, Craig Moore, recognized for his talent and ability in being chosen as the third Wild Card for the 2020 Road to the Horse competition,” said Mustang Heritage Foundation’s Director of Operations Randi Blasienz. “It’s a true honor for the mustang family to be included and represented in such a prestigious event.” The 2020 Road to the Horse will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park on March 19-22, 2020. 80

Hyaluronic acid: Examining the evidence in equine medicine Practicing evidence-based veterinary medicine is all well and good when the evidence is clear-cut. But as articular cartilage expert Dr. Emma Adam knows, the data on use of hyaluronic acid in horses are often ambiguous. source-image
82
By Sarah Mouton Dowdy
Equine joints' intrinsic repair capacity can't keep up with athletic wear and tear forever, says equine medicine professor Dr. Emma Adam. (Getty Images/Sacha Bloor) Emma Adam, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVS, assistant professor at the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Center, is a selfdescribed “cartilage junkie.” And within five minutes of her Fetch dvm360 conference session on
hyaluronic acid (HA), sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, it’s easy to see how the title fits. Sure, Dr. Adam did her PhD research in regenerative medicine as it relates to articular cartilage using RNA sequencing, but that’s not what’s most convincing. Instead, it’s how connective tissue brings out the poet in the veterinarian. Dr. Adam describes cartilage like some people talk of sunsets, employing words like “exquisite” and “beautiful.” And though she’s been an expert on the tissue for many years,
AUGUST 2019
the sight of it still inspires awe. “It’s an incredible substance,” says Dr. Adam, “and if we learn to respect it much earlier on in the disease process, we’ll have a better outcome in the end.” Respect begins with acknowledging articular cartilage’s significance, as well as its fragility. “Cartilage allows bones to slide seamlessly over one another, like running your finger over the top of an ice cube,” Dr. Adam explains. “It’s a shock absorber with exquisite biomechanical properties—properties we lust after for the rest of our lives.” However, its intrinsic repair capacity is unable to keep pace with an equine athlete’s wear and tear. “Growth factors within cartilage diminish with age,” she continues. “They also, ironically, get held onto harder by the binding proteins within that tissue. Sadly, the chondrocytes are stuck in little coffins (called ‘lacunae’) that prevent them from doing innovative and wonderful things. Cartilage is a tissue that’s set up for a lifetime of use but not regeneration.” In researching HA and its role in treating horses with joint damage and disease, Dr. Adam first looked to machines for a better understanding of how lubrication works. In the engineering world, lubrication is designed to decrease the frictional force between parts of a machine that are in contact—and that’s exactly what you want in joints. \ “When friction causes wear and tear among moving parts of machinery in contact, the machine loses its efficiency and becomes useless. We need to keep the moving parts apart,” Dr. Adam says. “And we need to reduce the maintenance and running costs of the machine. That’s certainly what my clients want out of me.” In equine joints, Dr. Adam says, boundary lubrication is the ally. And maintaining the normal function of the synovial membrane (the site of synovial fluid synthesis) is the one thing equine practitioners can do to maintain homeostasis within a given joint. “Does that mean adding corticosteroids and so on?” she asks. “The problem with that is we’ve already let the horse out of the stable, so to speak. We need to bring the realm of joint health back to us. When these horses first start getting little bits of effusion but aren’t actually getting lame, that is when we have synovial capsule inflammation, and

Horse deaths linked to compounded EPM drugs Attributed product contained 18 to 21 times more pyrimethamine than indicated on its label
An unapproved, compounded drug is believed to be linked to a recent string of horse deaths in the U.S.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting equine veterinarians that one lot of a compounded drug product containing pyrimethamine and
toltrazuril has been associated with adverse events in at least three horses and resulted in the deaths of the animals. Compounded by Rapid Equine Solutions of Aston, Penn., the product was packaged in 60ml oral paste syringes for the treatment of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), and was labeled as containing toltrazuril
416 mg/ml and pyrimethamine 17 mg/ml. Testing conducted by the FDA, however, revealed the lot contained approximately 18 to 21 times the pyrimethamine indicated on the label. High doses of pyrimethamine can cause symptoms such as seizures, fever, and death. This product lot is accounted for and is no longer in distribution,
the FDA reports. Rapid Equine Solutions learned of the adverse events on May 24 and initiated a recall to the consumer/user level the same day. Compounded products are not FDA-approved for use in animals. Likewise, toltrazuril is not approved for use in horses.

AUGUST 2019
hedgehog94/stock.adobe.com Septic arthritis, tenosynovitis or bursitis can be devastating and even life-threatening for equine athletes. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are imperative for a successful outcome. Sepsis in synovial structures is generally diagnosed based on the horse’s history and clinical signs as well as the results of imaging studies, cytology and synovial fluid culture. In foals, septic arthritis can occur from the first week to the first few months of life and is typically hematogenous in origin. In adult horses, septic synovial structures most often are due to a penetrating wound but they can be iatrogenic. The lameness may be less severe if it is acute or the structure is open and draining. Effusion, heat, swelling and pain during manipulation are common findings on physical examination. However, there may be no synovial effusion if the patient has a draining wound.

Your WDAA Newsletter
Dear Members, There’s just something about spending time with horses that makes us more appreciative and allows us to see beauty in the World. It lifts our spirits and makes every problem seem smaller and less overwhelming. There’s something about WDAA members that can do the same thing. In last month’s newsletter, we asked you to share your pictures and videos on the WDAA Social Corral, Facebook page and you did. It filled my heart with happiness to see you and your horses and to hear your stories. I was even more excited when you shared your videos of tests and tips. Seeing you, hearing about your journeys, and witnessing the way you help each other gives me and the WDAA staff and contractors the energy to keep growing and improving WDAA. This month, we get to share some new benefits with you. The new video education portal on the website has been our dream for as long as I have been a part of WDAA and now it is real! This WDAA members only portal, has been a challenge, somewhat like training a wild horse. We have had to change strategies a few times and it was such a struggle that at times I wasn’t sure we would ever pull it off. However, thanks to our tenacious, flexible staff, contractors, judges and volunteers, we did it! All members already have a profile setup, and we have sent you login details to access your account. Then, you can watch videos of tests from the World Show. The tests are narrated with comments from our judges and others. We will keep adding videos and improving the portal. So, keep checking back and let us know what other types of videos you would like. Additionally, we are rolling out our new Veteran’s programs this month and discounts for members at Riding Warehouse. I am grateful for Dini Swanson and our whole team who work hard to make our WDAA dreams come true. I am also grateful for you, members who inspire us all. Thank you for sharing your pictures, videos and stories with us through the Social Corral. Keep posting the good stuff!! Cindy Butler, Your President Western Dressage Association of America

Strictly Diesel Tip for August
Clean the machine. Last month’s tech tip talked about doing an intake service. This service could be done on both your gasoline vehicle and your diesel pickup. Another service that complements this one is an injector flush. I know it may sound crazy, but your common rail diesel engine could use this every 30k miles. Depending on driving habits, your diesel engine
builds up soot and carbon in the combustion chamber, (as we talked about in the last tech tip) your injector tip is also in that combustion chamber. The buildup of carbon deposits both outside and inside the injector tip due to poor fuel quality, lack of fuel filter maintenance, and other fuel related issues can cause your injector not to spray properly into the combustion chamber.
Truck Talk with Nate Brekken
This could cause hard starts, your engine to run rough, excessive regens to occur, lack of power, poor fuel economy and so on. Running a cleaning solution
through your fuel system can help this concern. The products we use from BG allow us Nate Brekken to run an injector cleaner through your diesel fuel system. Depending on the vehicle, they can be hooked up before the fuel pump, and or just before the high-pressure fuel pump. This cleaner works to loosen and break apart any build up that may be occurring in your high-pressure fuel system. When this happens, YOU gain the benefit. Your engine runs smoother, you gain fuel economy and the smile on your face comes back because you like to drive your truck again.
This service can also be done to your gasoline vehicle. Same benefits as the Diesel service. BG and Strictly Diesel offer products that work on your gas, and diesel vehicle. A win for all of us. Give us a call today 623-582-4404. We can service both your gasoline vehicle and your diesel - keeping your family on the road for the long haul.

AUGUST 2019
Have you ever dreamed about starring alongside Idris Elba? Are you a trained horseback rider? Well, it might just be your lucky day. “Ghetto Cowboy,” an upcoming film starring Elba, known for his roles in “Luther” and “The Wire,” is set to begin filming in Philadelphia between Aug. 5 and Aug. 30. According to a Facebook post by Heery-Loftus Casting, the film is casting young African American woman (Between the ages of 1520 Casting Director Jason Loftus told PhillyVoice this week) for a speaking role. More than acting experience, the film’s producers are looking for a person “very experienced” at horseback riding.

LANE FROST’S LEGACY LIVES ON 30 YEARS AFTER HIS PASSING BY TRACY RENCK
The date is etched in rodeo history – July 30, 1989. That is the day the rodeo world lost a legend in PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Lane Frost. Frost passed away as a result of injuries sustained when the bull he was riding
92
struck him after a ride during the short round at the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days Rodeo. Frost was 25.
Frost won the 1987 PRCA world championship. He would have been 55 years old this year. “The thing that has surprised me the most is how his legacy has lived on,” said Frost’s mother, Elsie. “I just never dreamed after
AUGUST 2019
30 years that anyone would even mention him or remember him, and of course, we have to give the movie ‘8 Seconds’ a little bit of credit for that. Our grandson (Stetson Frost) started a Lane Frost Brand that has really taken off and that has really helped bring Lane’s name back around too. Of course, in some ways, it seems like yesterday (that it happened) and other ways it seems like quite some time ago. I know he would be so proud that people still remember him.” The late Luke Perry portrayed Frost in the movie “8 Seconds,” which debuted Feb. 25, 1994. Although the movie wasn’t quite a true depiction of Frost’s real-life story, the movie played a key role in keeping Frost’s legacy alive. Frost’s family moved from Utah to Lane, Okla., in 1978. “When we first moved to Oklahoma, Lane wasn’t well-known,” recalled Frost’s sister, Robin Muggli. “When we got to Oklahoma, I was a senior in high school, and he was a freshman. He pulled a much, much stronger rope than anybody I have ever known. One of the first rodeos we went to, we were at Duncan (Okla.) at the rodeo and Lane said you’re going to have to come pull my rope. Well, back then, it was very, very frowned on for girls to be behind the chute. I didn’t want to do it, but he said he couldn’t find anybody else who he trusted to do it. I went back behind the chute, which immediately made the stock contractor mad, and he was screaming at me. “I had pulled his rope many times, but on this bull, I could not get it tight enough. Somebody else jumped up there to pull the rope and they couldn’t pull the rope either. They had to get two, great-big guys who finally got it tight enough for him. He rode the bull and won the rodeo. From then on, he was known in the area.” He’s not just known in the area anymore. “I have a Western store (Frost Ranch Wear) in Atoka (Okla.),” Muggli said. “Cowboys and kids stop through here, and what blows my mind is the young kids, anywhere in
sincere, kind guy. I still stay in touch with his mother and father (Clyde), and I think we continue to be amazed that he’s a bigger deal now than he was 30 years ago. I think that is rare is any walk of life.” Frost, who was posthumously inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1990, has had a lasting impact on bull riders today – few of whom were born before he died. That includes PRCA bull
rider Sage Kimzey, 24, who has won five consecutive PRCA world championships. “Anybody who walks into a rodeo arena now, Lane had some influence on whether it be through old cowboy stories or from the movie (8 Seconds) or whatever the reason may be,” Kimzey said. “I feel like everybody looks up to him. I watched videos of Lane riding, and I think everybody has watched 8 Seconds about a million times.
With him leaving this Earth too soon, he became that largerthan-life character. I know for me at least, and my generation of cowboys, it was always when you grow up you wanted to be like Lane Frost. There are only a handful of icons in bull riding, and Lane is definitely one of them – not only how he rode bulls, but how he carried himself and the person he was.”
age from 4 to 12 to 19, are just as excited about him and enamored with him today as they were 10 years ago. It blows my mind. He was gone 20 years before some of these kids were even born and they still are excited about him as ever.” Elsie believes faith played a role in people gravitating to Frost. “I have said all along I think God gave Lane the personality that he did to draw people to him, because God knew the big picture in what was going to happen,” Elsie said. “Lane liked everybody. It didn’t matter if you were 80 or 8, he wanted to visit with you. He was bad at remembering names, but he never forgot your face. If he saw somebody a year later that he visited with at that rodeo, he remembered them. He had a God-given talent to draw people to him.” Tuff Hedeman was Frost’s best friend. Just months after Frost’s death, Hedeman was crowned the 1989 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider. “The reality of it is, is he was as advertised,” Hedeman said. “He was the coolest, best guy you would ever meet. He was The Guy when he was alive. He was the kind of guy if you ever wanted to be somebody, you wanted to be him. He was to everybody, not to just me. He was a very genuine, AUGUST 2019

Four Paint Horses to be inducted in the APHA Hall of Fame in 2020
The best of the best, the cream of the crop—since its founding in 2012, the APHA Hall of Fame has honored the legendary people and Paint Horses that exemplify what it means to be a part of the APHA family. Whether it was through successes in the show ring or advocating for the Paint Horse across different platforms, to be inducted the APHA Hall of Fame is an honor that a select few can claim as their own.
In 2020, four Paint Horses will join the elite group that is the APHA Hall of Fame and will be recognized for their impact on the organization. Their names and legacies will be commemorated at the APHA Hall of Fame and Educational Outreach Center at the new APHA Headquarters in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The four horses that have been selected are: Cactus Christy, a 1977 bay tobiano mare by Cactus Banner B and out of Debla’s Bimbo was owned by Haverty Ranch in Krum, Texas. A dam of seven foals that went on to earn 293 APHA points, Cactus Christy earned 114 lifetime APHA points herself in cutting, halter, reining, working cow horse and Western pleasure. She collected multiple awards before her passing in 2003, including two national champion titles, three Registers of Merit, one Superior Event and two world championship titles. Color Me Smart, owned by Iconic Color LLC of Fort Worth, Texas, has sired 841 horses that have acquired 4,814 APHA points and 582 PAC performance credits collectively. A 1991 bay tobiano stallion by Smart Little Lena and Doxs Paint Lady, Color Me Smart earned a Register of Merit and a world championship title for cutting in 1997. Scarlet Print was a 1990 chestnut overo mare by Silent Print and out of Oakes Shady Lady who earned 1,334 lifetime APHA points in halter classes. Owned by Michelle Engle of Bakersfield, California, Scarlet Print had an impressive accolade of awards, including four Registers of Merit, three Superiors Events and 10 world championship titles—all in halter classes. She was a dam to nine horses that have collected a total of 746 points in halter classes. Olympia Joe, owned by Creighton Ranch & C N Keith of Paris, Texas, was a 1977 sorrel tobiano stallion by Joycrief Bar and out of Olympia Babe. Bred by King Merritt of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Olympia Joe was the sire to 453 horses that have earned 2,381 APHA points, 1,840 racing points and 728 PAC credits. Olympia Joe earned a Register of Merit for racing in 1980. These incredible Paint Horses will be inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame on Feb. 29 during the 2020 APHA Convention at the Fort Worth Stockyards. 94

BraveHearts’ “Trail to Zero” Rides in to New York, D.C. and Chicago According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, each day, on average, 20 veterans take their own lives. To shed light on the growing epidemic of veteran suicide, BraveHearts—the leading equine rehabilitation program for veterans in the nation—will embark on its third annual “Trail to Zero” ride in New York, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The 20-mile ride in each city commemorates the number of veterans lives lost, while cultivating a conversation around the mental health crisis plaguing those who have served the country and educating those in need about the benefits and healing effects of equine-assisted services. “‘Trail to Zero’ was developed after countless conversations with veterans about the intensifying suicide pandemic tragically affecting so many,” said Meggan Hill-McQueeney, President/COO, BraveHearts. “To hear that these men and women who have already sacrificed so much, are taking their own lives is simply heartbreaking. We need to raise awareness and find solutions to help protect those who put their lives on the line for our nation.” BraveHearts is the largest Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) program in the country serving veterans all at no cost, offering equine services to provide emotional, cognitive, social and physical benefits for veterans. “Trail to Zero” is supported by the NYPD Mounted Unit, US Park Police Mounted Horse Unit and the Chicago Mounted Unit. Rides will take place in September, which is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, in Washington, D.C. (September 7); New York City (September 14); and Chicago (September 28).
