Lyne receives Ty Murray Top Hand Award as true All-Around Cowboy

BY: DARCI MILLER

Phil Lyne had a long, storied rodeo career and went down in history as one of the greatest cowboys ever. But he remembers one rodeo in particular, back when he first got into the RCA, and it’s not for any good reasons. “My first head of stock was a calf,” Lyne said. “I had him on the ground. Two wraps. All I had to

do was get the hooey to win the round, and all I could hear was Morris Walker hollering, ‘Go Phil go! Go Phil go!’ And I missed that hooey four times, and stood up four times. And boy, I tried not to ever make that mistake again. “I was nervous. Nervous like I am right now,” he joked. Lyne was on hand at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa in Las

Vegas to accept the Ty Murray Top Hand Award at the PBR Heroes & Legends Celebration. The award is given to cowboys for their achievements and lasting contributions to the sport of rodeo. Lyne received the award alongside Larry Mahan, whom he battled for all-around dominance in the early 1970s. Lyne competed in five events: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down

roping and steer wrestling. He would go on to earn five world titles in three different events – allaround and tie-down roping in both 1971 and 1972, and steer roping in 1990. World Finals Banner He’s the only cowboy to win the NFR average in three separate events. “When you’re talking about allaround cowboys, that’s a true allaround cowboy on both ends,” said eight-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger, who presented Lyne with the award. Berger himself was like a kid on Christmas morning, having watched Lyne compete every night at the 1972 National Finals Rodeo and wanting to be just like him. “I was 11 years old and I was growing, so my mom said I could get a new pair of chaps,” Berger said. “I said, ‘Well just make sure they look just like Phil Lyne’s.’ That’s all I wanted. “I feel like I’m getting an award when they asked me to do this for Phil, because to introduce your childhood hero, it’s awesome.” The all-around title race in 1972 became the subject of a documentary called “The Great American Cowboy,” which won the 1973 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and immortalized Lyne and Mahan in pop culture. The two were also inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 1979 and later the PBR’s Ring of Honor. “Phil is one of the greatest allcontinued on page 36

NRHA and FEI Reach New Agreement

After more than 20 years of cooperation, which produced some of the most exciting moments in World Equestrian Games’ history, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is pleased to announce a new agreement has been reached with the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). FEI unanimously approved the new agreement at its General Assembly, held in Moscow on November 19.

“I am so proud of our NRHA Task Force that worked diligently with the officials at FEI to come to a workable Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). All of these individuals have focused on our mission to promote the reining horse. Although each organization has different needs, we were able to meet those needs and agree on a path forward,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock.

“This MOU provides more clarity, and the conversations have brought about better understanding. This agreement preserves the progress we have made over the last two decades, provides a means to develop more joint competitions, and protects the heritage of both organizations! Pertinent details on the agreement and its potential impact on the

NRHA membership will be directly communicated in the near future as implementation plans are finalized. NRHA looks forward to growing reining alongside FEI and through its affiliates around the globe.

around hands in the game because he worked both ends of the arena,” Mahan told PBR.com this summer. “His two big events in my mind were the calf roping and bull riding. And he excelled in both of those.” The trick, according to Lyne, was simple: make mistakes, but don’t make them again. “I made so many mistakes,” Lyne said. “I made mistakes, and I tried not to make them afterwards.” Lyne retired from full-time rodeo competition in 1974 at 27 years old, but he picked up steer roping and was eventually lured back to competition by the increased prize money. The fact that he could still compete with the kids didn’t hurt, either, and Lyne won his last world title at 43 years old. But when it comes down to it, Lyne looks back on his career fondly not because of the buckles, but because of the people. “It’s the guys I got to meet,” he said. “Not just the cowboys, but ranchers and rodeo supporters, committee men, stock contractors, pickup men, secretaries and all that. The friendships you form, that was one of the greatest thing. And probably not for rodeo, I might not’ve met my wife. And that was one of the best things that happened to me. “It’s very humbling to be here, and the respect I have for Ty and all those boys, for them to recognize me and do this, it’s very humbling.”

Applying the Mindfulness of Yoga to Horsemanship

Image courtesy of Cathy Woods Yoga, by Photographer Carol Borrelli

A new day is dawning in the equine world. The practice of mindfulness is becoming common, not only in horsemanship but in daily life. As our world moves faster and faster and stress levels rise, many are embracing practices that help us to slow down and live more fully in the present.

As a yoga teacher of 30 years and creator of Body, Mind, Equine (a program exploring the parallels of yoga and horsemanship), I’ve seen yoga principles (not just the postures) enrich life on many levels. These principles include: present moment awareness, breathing, body and energy awareness, becoming collected and integrated, body, mind and spirit, to name a few. When I first introduced the concept of mindfulness to horse people, many thought it was an airy-fairy or trendy approach to

38

horsemanship. I can assure you it is not, and I’m thrilled to see it being embraced! When we are fully present, doing one thing at one time (which we learn from doing yoga), we enhance our experiences. We slow down, are safer, and learn to savor the moments. These beneficial ways of being are very helpful when working with horses. I will share more specifics in future articles. In the meantime, if you are interested in this topic, you and your horse can join me & co-clinician, Jec Ballou, for a one-day clinic, Balanced Horses Mindful Riders at Winter Rose Equestrian Center in Scottsdale, AZ on Feb. 29, 2020. Additionally, my book, Yoga for Riders, will publish May of 2020. Follow Cathy Woods Yoga on Face Book & Instagram for tips & updates. Happy Trails & Namaste, Cowgirl/Yogini, Cathy Woods

California Chrome Moves to JapanKeisuke Onishi, head of Japan’s JS Company that recently announced it had purchased California Chrome, knew well of the two-time Horse of the Year’s popularity when executing the deal.

In a World Horse Racing video feature published Friday, he also noted that the news shut down his company’s website for hours given

46

DECEMBER 2019

the crush of clicks. Much of that may have stemmed from Japanese curiosity in an American dirt champion making his way overseas. But this horse has always had his “Chromies,” too, and there was concern from them about the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner leaving his Kentucky home as a Taylor Made stallion. “Please don’t be afraid of his next career here because we promise to take care of him very deeply,” Onishi said in the video. California Chrome, Onishi added, will quarantine in December and is expected to arrive in Japan after the new year. By the end of January, he’ll have settled in at Arrow Stud which stands, among others, Lani, who ran in all three legs of the 2016 Triple Crown series. Japan will also be the new home next year to likely Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar as well as Animal Kingdom who, like California Chrome, won the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup. Onishi’s interview was published five years to the day that California Chrome scored another of his career-defining victories, winning on the turf in the Hollywood Derby (G1) at Del Mar. Given wins over multiple surfaces, “There is very big support for him,” Onishi said. California Chrome is expected to cover 120-130 mares next season, a number of them with the great Sunday Silence in their blood. It will coincide with his first 2-yearold runners heading to the races in the U.S. “He’s just the horse we wanted,” Onishi said. “We are really happy to import such a good horse — a special horse. A big name — he’s a special horse.”

¡Ay Chihuahua! “Until I was ten years old I did not know that people died except by violence.” —James Kaywaykla, Mimbres Apache

56

DECEMBER 2019

Most of us are familiar with the saying “Ay Chihuahua!” which is the Spanish equivalent of “Yikes!” The entire saying is, “Ay Chihuahua, cuantos Apaches, cuantos Indios sin huaraches!” Which loosely translated, means, “Yikes! How many Apache Indians are there without sandals!” The saying refers to the time when legendary Apache raiders like Geronimo, Cochise, Juh and Victorio plundered the northern states of Mexico. Apaches wore calfhigh deerskin moccasins, as opposed to the sandals of the locals, thus the play on words and the rhyming (Apaches-huaraches). It has been almost a century since those raids but it is quite amazing that this saying is still in use today.

Born Into a Storm of Violence In the time of Geronimo’s youth the Southwest was awash in blood and violence. All the tribes trafficked in slaves and constant raiding and reprisals decimated entire regions. Then with the Spanish and the Mexicans moving in, the violence grew even worse. In 1835, the commander of the military in Sonora, Mexcio, Ignacio Zuniga, wrote in a report that since 1820 no fewer than 5,000 lives had been lost to the Apaches. He claimed at least 100 ranches, haciendas, mining camps and other settlements had been destroyed, and between 3,000 to 4,000 settlers had been forced to quit the frontier. He added that the Apache raids had slackened recently, but largely “for lack of anything worth plundering.”

Apache Nicknames It’s hard to beat some of the nicknames the Apaches came up with. For example, for Alchesay, one of his Apache nicknames is tsajn (“swollen one”). Reading between the lines, could it be that someone said he was “full of himself”? Another chief tcilki ane translates as “Rectum”, which I assume means Chief Rectum? Another chief’s nickname translates to “Angry He Waves Something Long Back And Forth.” Not going to touch that one with a 10foot, well, you know. But, my personal favorite is Hackinay, also known as Toggy Snoggy (“Big Nose”).

Standlee Premium Western Forage® Introduces a High Fiber/ Low Sugar Forage Pellet Standlee Premium ProductsTM introduces Standlee Premium Western Forage® Teff Grass Pellets for horses, a soft high fiber grass forage with moderate protein content and low sugar/starch content. This forage is a nutritional solution for horses challenged with sugar/starch sensitivities such as those diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Resistance (IR), Cushings Disease, Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) and Laminitis. “Finally, low sugar/starch grass forage is now available for horses with sugar-related diseases; this is a game changer for horse owners.”- Dr. Stephen Duren

Teff Grass Forage Pellets offer a convenient and consistent nutrition solution that gives horse owners peace of mind that what they’re feeding is safe and nutritionally low in sugar/starch for their horses. Replacing baled grass hay with Teff Grass Forage Pellets eliminates the need to soak hay in water to reduce sugar content. It also eliminates the time, hassle and expense of nutritionally testing multiple batches of hay to find a source suitable for your sugar sensitive horse. Teff Grass Forage Pellets are also a good option for overweight horses. These horses often struggle to lose weight with other higher calorie forages. page1image1805856 “Teff Grass gives horse owners with overweight horses a sound, high fiber option for feeding that is both low in calories and low in sugar/starch. This will allow weight reduction with a minimum of behavior issues.”- Dr. Tania Cubitt Teff Grass Forage Pellets also offer another option for feeding grass forage to horses that have allergies to other grass and legumes such as timothy grass, orchard grass, alfalfa and clover.``` 60

Record-breaking year in wild horse and burro placements for Mustang Heritage Foundation

Working in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Program the Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) recently achieved remarkable highs by placing 2,623 wild horses and burros into private care through adoptions and sales. This accomplishment is a 34% increase over 2017-18. “First and foremost, I personally want to thank all of our trainers, fans, volunteers and staff for the dedication and commitment to supporting the mustangs. Thanks to the efforts of all these groups,

I’m very pleased to report that we have achieved a new all-time record number of placements surpassing the previous record set in 2017 by 737 animals,” said Alex Kappert, Executive Director of the Mustang Heritage Foundation. “While we are thrilled with the results, I can assure you that the entire MHF staff is already hard at work creating new and additional opportunities to get even more mustangs placed into adoptive forever homes. As an organization, we have robust goals for the number

of animals to be placed in FY 2019-2020 and we will need your continued support to reach, and hopefully exceed, these goals. Here’s to another phenomenal year in 2019-20.” To keep up with this momentum, the BLM recently awarded MHF with additional funding to continue programming into FY 19-20. The majority of the funding will go to the MHF Trainer Incentive Program (TIP), which is responsible for 93% of MHF’s animal placements and is experiencing unprecedented growth. Across the United States, wild horses and burros are placed into the TIP gentling program, which was created and is managed by the MHF. Equine trainers involved in this program pick-up a BLM wild horse or burro and gentle it to halter, lead, pick-up all four feet, and load and unload from a trailer. Once the animal has met the gentling requirements, the trainer then finds an adopter or purchaser and MHF pays the trainer an incentive of $1,000 per horse and $750 per burro.

Getting these 2,623 animals placed into adoptive homes helps to preserve an American icon and a connection with our western heritage. Every animal placed also saves taxpayers an average of $50,000 over the course of an animal’s life. This year’s placements alone equate to $131,150,000 in taxpayer savings. To help ensure another record year, MHF is introducing a new program to get more mustangs out of government holding called Hero a Mustang. Through the Hero a Mustang program, a $1000 tax-deductible donation will guarantee that a mustang will come out of holding and be gentled, trained and placed into private care.

BLM ANNOUNCES BANNER YEAR

FOR WILD HORSE AND BURRO ADOPTIONS AND SALES

Largest Number of Adoptions in 15 Years – More than 7,100 Placed into Private Homes

WASHINGTON— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that it reached a significant milestone by placing 7,104 wild horses and burros into private homes nationwide during Fiscal Year 2019 (which ended September 30). This is the highest number of adoptions and sales the agency has seen over the last 15 years and represents a 54 percent increase (nearly 2,500 animals) over the previous year’s total of 4,609 animals. Wild horses at the recent wild horse and burro event at Deerwood Ranch in Wyoming. Photo by Nikki Maxwell, BLM.

72

“We are thrilled to see the tremendous response from the American people to our new adoption initiatives,” said Casey Hammond, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management. “Adopted animals are given good homes and contribute to healthier herds, and is a testament to how strongly our nation is committed to participating in the success of public lands. .” The BLM attributes the sharp increase in combined adoptions and sales to a number of factors, including an increase in the number of placement events held, an increase in the number of animals offered, and implementation of the Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) last March. The AIP, which offers successful adopters $1,000 to give an untrained wild horse or burro a

good home, accounted for nearly 53 percent of all adoptions in 2019. “The current overpopulation of wild horses and burros represents an existential threat to the health of landscapes across the West. In many places, the range will take decades to recover – and in some cases, it’s unlikely that it ever will,” said BLM Deputy Director for Policy and Programs William Pendley. “For this reason, the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program is critical to the health of native wildlife populations and the economic health of countless communities.” As of March 1, 2019, the wild horse and burro population on public lands was estimated at more than 88,000, which is more than triple the number of animals the land can sustainably support in conjunction with other legally mandated uses, making every

DECEMBER 2019

successful adoption or sale vitally important in helping the agency regain proper balance. Given the extensive overpopulation, wild horses and burros routinely face starvation and death from lack of water. The high number of excess wild horses and burros causes habitat damage that forces animals to leave public lands and travel onto private property or even highways in search of food and water. When the number of animals removed from the range exceeds the number the agency can place through adoption or sale, the remaining animals are held in off-range corrals or contracted pastures at taxpayer expense. Currently there are approximately 46,000 wild horses and burros in off-range corrals and pastures. The cost of providing quality, humane care for these animals runs about $50 million annually.

Many of you already know Sammy around TTF, however we are SO excited to have her join our training staff part time as a professional. Sammy and her family have been part of the Twisted Tree Family for the past 16 years and Sammy started her riding career at TTF in the walk/trot. From there she moved up quickly through the ranks incurring numerous championships and titles in the Pony Hunters, Children's Hunter/ Equitation/Medals, Junior Hunters/Equitation/Medals, Children's Jumpers, JR/AO Jumpers, and most recently the Grand Prixes. Sammy is a true testament to the TTF program and we could not be prouder to have her become a Professional and join our team while she pursues her path to Medical School. Sammy will be assisting in teaching lessons, coaching, and doing some of the professional/training rides. Her talent, positive attitude, and range of experience in all 3-rings will further enrich all of the clients and riders of Twisted Tree Farm!

Country Thunder is rolling back to the Canyon Moon Ranch with a lineup set to include some of the biggest names in country music. After a mind-blowing 2019 festival which featured Chris Stapleton in a rare festival appearance, organizers have upped the ante for 2020. North America’s largest country music festival brand is eager to put on another world-class event for CT Nation in Arizona. “This is the line-up that we were after,” says Country Thunder Music Festivals CEO Troy Vollhoffer. “Arizona is one of the strongest markets in the world for Eric Church, Luke Combs is the biggest artist in music right now and Kane Brown is probably the hottest young act in country. “The fans in Arizona are some of the most loyal anywhere and

we know we have to deliver the biggest and best, year-in and yearout.” When it comes to timely artists, perhaps no one has ever come close to CMA Vocalist Of The Year, Luke Combs. No artist in music history, in any genre, has ever had their first six singles go to No. 1. From that end, these are unchartered waters for the biggest superstar in any format right now. He transcends boundaries, his songs speak to everyone, and every arena he plays is sold-out months in advance. Arizona . . . get ready. The Arizona chapter of the “Church Choir” will be out in full force for what promises to be an epic Sunday evening climax. One of the genre’s biggest and most consistent superstars has only grown since his last Thunder appearance here in 2017.

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

How Are Your Batteries Holding Up? There’s few things less enjoyable than having to purchase a new set of batteries and they rarely fail at a convenient place or time. If you’re lucky they might be under warranty or partial warranty saving you some money. So let’s look at some common issues we see with them and how to keep them from causing other problems and costly repairs.

The most important part of your truck’s electrical system starts with the batteries. As batteries draw down it can cause many different symptoms. The alternator will work overtime to maintain a charge and if voltage is too low it can affect onboard electronics. We’ve seen weak batteries affect computers, transmission operation,

HVAC and security systems to name a few. It can also affect diagnosis as we rely on sensors for input, if they aren’t receiving proper voltage we may see false readings. In our repair shop we frequently have to replace batteries before any diagnosis can be

performed. If your truck regularly sits for a week or more we recommend recharging Nate Brekken them periodically, or install a battery tender to maintain a full charge. Automotive batteries last longer when they maintain a full charge unlike a deep cycle type which can be run low and recharged several times.

On average batteries in Arizona have a life span of about two years because of our extreme summer temperatures which isn’t very long but a lot can happen in that time frame. It’s normal for them to lose charge over time and very common for them to leak acid. When they leak acid it will form a white crusty build up at the terminal and start looking like your child’s science experiment. If they are not cleaned and allowed to build acid, this acid (or corrosion) can travel through the insulation and damage the cable or eat right through the terminals. We always recommend terminal protectors to help neutralize the acid and slow the process of the acid spreading. If the battery terminal bolts become stripped or corroded, we make double ended battery bolt replacements. These bolts also allow an easier way to attach positive terminal leads without overtightening or stripping the bolt. continued on page 84 78

Local Water Hauling Company Steps in to

By Holly Wagner

It was a fun day to play in the snow when record snowfall hit the unincorporated Maricopa County island of Rio Verde Foothills, AZ. The fun and snow lasted on the ground for a few days but the impact of heavy snowfall was devastating for many. “My trees and property were completely destroyed” states RVF resident Nancy Randle. “My Palo Verde trees were brought straight to the ground, broken limbs and branches everywhere. It cost me almost $3,000 to haul away all the dead branches; my beautiful trees are now gone”. Mrs. Randle’s story has been a common theme in the community since

the mass snowfall almost a year ago. What has been more frightening for residents is when the local Rio Verde Horseman’s Association (RVHA) published an article by Fire Chief Kraetz of Rural Metro Fire Station #826 stating they possessed a single fire truck holding only 1,000 gallons of water; Chief Kraetz continued to state “We would like to remind everyone that we live in the desert surrounded by dry brush and extremely flammable tinder with limited fire service support”. It would be one of the scariest fire seasons to come for many RVF residents. “I knew we had to do something” Holly Wagner states, “I was afraid for my home and my community knowing all the brush and timber lying on the ground was a mass fire hazard waiting to happen”. Mrs. Wagner continued to state “We are far away from any help or water resources. Most of our dirt roads are in lousy condition. The Rio Verde Foothills Community has no water, piping or infrastructure. We have no fire hydrants. A single

1,000 gallon fire truck won’t cut it. If there is a fire, many of us won’t survive”. It was then Damon Bruns, owner of local water hauling company Dynamite Water LLC decided to step in and help the cause. “We had already done some training with Rural Metro fire station #826 and had spoken about partnering for emergency water resources. With adaptors our water hauling trucks can connect into the fire trucks. Our water trucks can provide continuous water to the fire truck. The fire truck no longer has to leave the fire to find a hydrant to fill from”. This was amazing, however, from whom and where would we get local water resources from? 82

DECEMBER 2019

Save Maricopa County Island Community That is when Holly Wagner got to work. “I decided to start volunteering for Dynamite Water to see how we could make the community safer”. Mrs. Wagner contacted the Arizona Department of Transportation to emergency certify Dynamite Water LLC vehicles while Mr. Bruns amended his contracts with Global Water Resources at their well site and Morgan Taylor Homes for emergency water access. Both a Certificate of Recognition and statement letters were then signed off by Rural Metro #826 & Rio Verde Fire District. “I can’t believe the support we have received from Global, ADOT, Morgan Taylor Homes, Rural Metro & Rio Verde Fire District. It’s amazing they believed in Damon and I and the goal to safeguard the community against fire”. Hard work and dedication has paid off as Dynamite Water LLC put out six fires the following fire season alone and response times for Rural Metro #826 have almost been cut in half. With their proven success Senator Martha McSally publicly endorsed Damon Bruns & Holly Wagner for all their hard work. “We are absolutely thrilled” states Mrs. Wagner. “We have worked so hard for so long and to see the results is absolutely phenomenal”. Mr. Bruns states, “The Rio Verde Foothills Community is now safer than ever; we now have the most water and water resources available than ever before. I am proud to help protect and serve my community”. Both Mr. Bruns and Mrs. Wagner reside in the Rio Verde Foothills Community. “I can’t imagine volunteering my time with better people or a better company. The Bruns’ are some of the most selfless people I have ever had a chance to volunteer for. It has been an absolute honor”. ..and a HUGE thank you to everyone in the Rio Verde Community who have supported us and our efforts!

*A note from the Author: As a result of positive RVF community outpour, we have now formed the Rio Verde Foothills Volunteer Fire Support & Emergency Services 501©3 Non-Profit Organization. Donations can be made through Wells Fargo Bank located at Dynamite & Alma School Rd in Scottsdale. Please make sure to say ‘hi’ to Maria! “All donations are unexpected but appreciated. All donations go straight to safe guarding the helpless and our community through emergency water resources, maintenance and environmental services”. Have a blessed day!

Tips on Truck Care

As corrosion builds inside of the cable it’s noticeable since the rubber insulation will swell up. We’ve seen some creative repair attempts over the years but the best option is to replace the entire cable. Replacing only the damaged part of the cable means you’re adding another connection which can cause high resistance, in other words current won’t fully travel through that point. Battery cables on diesel trucks aren’t your standard foot long cable you can purchase from an auto parts store, they can be quite expensive since

84

DECEMBER 2019

many of them have multiple leads branching off or connect both

positive terminals together. Many battery cables are no longer made by the manufacturer so we have to build them in the shop as needed, again not an inexpensive repair. Now that you’re a pro on batteries and battery cables go outside and pop the hood on your truck and take a look. While you’re at it check any other vehicle in your household. If there is any moisture on the top of the battery or corrosion build up, then they need to be cleaned. If you don’t want to deal with the mess we can perform the cleaning for you, it’s inexpensive and doesn’t take very

long. So give us a call today! Call Strictly Diesel today! 623-582-4404

WPRA Rookie of the Year 2019 With a year of professional rodeo under her belt – and a shiny new Rookie of the Year title to her name – Carly Taylor is ready for whatever the 2020 season brings. Taylor, from Andersonville, Tennessee, finished the season with a total of $72,300. She finished 18th in the WPRA World Standings, not far off from making the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (15th place, Lacinda Rose, had $88,936). The 21-year-old rookie says she’s thrilled with the year she had. “I really enjoyed it,” she said simply. “It’s cool, being able to look back on the year and see what I’ve learned from the beginning to now.”

What did she learn?

“I think it’s easy to look at rodeos for an entire month or

year and overwhelm yourself,” she explained. “The best thing I learned was to sit at the beginning of a week and map everything out. Focus on them one by one.” Taylor profusely thanked Ann Thompson, who does her entering for her. She said Thompson “really does have it down to a science,” and that Taylor couldn’t even begin to imagine entering on her own. This was Taylor’s first year of major rodeo experience. She did some local shows near her home when she was growing up, participated in the Junior WPRA ranks and eventually made the leap into WPRA this year when she felt her horse, Diva, was ready.

Taylor Black from Paradise Valley, AZ wins the $5,000 Grand Prix with Ludwig’s Concept, her 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding

The second annual AON/ United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) National Championships have concluded at The Las Vegas National Horse Show. Riders representing 30 states and Canada competed for national

titles and earned Horse of the Year points in hunter, equitation, and jumper divisions. All competitors and their families also enjoyed free VIP access, fun activities throughout the week, and an experience to remember.

Jenny Karazissis (Calabasas, Calif.) kicked off the championships with a win in the $25,000 Professional USHJA National Hunter Derby aboard Ravenswood, Lisa Wu’s nineyear-old Oldenburg gelding. “It’s very exciting,” Karazissis

said of being back in Las Vegas. “Last year, it really felt important; it’s an exciting week, and then to be able to have time to watch the jumpers at night - I love it. I was really looking forward to coming back.” New to the championships in 2019, the USEF/USHJA 1.00m Low Children's and Adult Amateur Jumper Championships saw exciting competition in the Priefert Pavilion. Taylor Black (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) earned the title in the Low Children's division after winning the $5,000 Grand Prix with Ludwig’s Concept, her 12-yearold Oldenburg gelding. Lauren Little (Lafayette, Calif.) placed second with Ultra d’Eclipse, her 15-year-old Holsteiner mare. The Leading Trainer title for the 1.00m Children's Jumper Championship was awarded to Black's trainer, Lucy Alabaster (Phoenix, Ariz.). Sweeping the USHJA Green Hunter 3'3" National Championship was Nick Haness (Temecula, Calif.), earning both the champion and reserve champion titles aboard West Coast Equine Partners, LLC’s horse Crowd Pleaser, a 12-year-old Selle Français gelding, and Reese's, a six-year-old Warmblood gelding. Adding to his success at this year's Championships, Haness was also named the High Score Hunter Rider for his score of 90 90

Augusta Iwasaki (Calabasas, Calif.) and Illusion, the 20-yearold Hanoverian gelding she owns with Elizabeth Reilly and Chris M. Iwasaki, captured the win in the $25,000 Junior/Amateur USHJA National Hunter Derby with consistent scores of 89 in both the Classic and Handy Hunter rounds. Cindy Fox (Claremont, Calif.) piloted Nostalgic, her 11-year-old Warmblood gelding, to win the USHJA Amateur Owner Hunter 3'3" National Championship, 36 and Over. The duo earned first place in both over-fences classes and second in the under saddle. Irene Neuwirth (Culver City, Calif.) and Twinkle Toes, her seven-year-old Warmblood gelding, earned reserve champion. The pair had consistent top placings over fences and the appropriately named Twinkle Toes impressed the judges to capture the top spot in the under-saddle class. In addition to competitive opportunities, free educational sessions hosted by the USHJA took place throughout the week, including an interactive and engaging session with renowned sports psychologist Mario Soto, a judging clinic led by Mark Bone, a course walk of the $100,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Las Vegas with Will Simpson, and more. Horse Saved after Fall into Pool, Trapped on Snowy Thanksgiving

By Kate Cimini

This Thanksgiving, one California mare had something to truly be thankful for.

She was rescued Thanksgiving morning after getting trapped overnight in a lap pool in near-freezing temperatures as a winter storm hit the coast. Wednesday night, a 29-year-old mare named Lucy broke out of her Gonzales enclosure while her owners were away, the SPCA for Monterey County said. She wandered until she fell through a pool cover and into a lap pool in the yard, where she was trapped for hours, as temperatures dipped into the 30s. The next morning, someone who spotted Lucy called the SPCA, who sprang into action. SPCA humane officers and the Gonzales Fire Department responded to the scene to rescue the struggling horse. Lucy's owners put the SPCA in touch with their vet, Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic, who also responded to the scene. Gonzales Fire drained the pool, and all three services worked together to build a makeshift stairway for Lucy out of hay, shavings, and the SPCA's trailer ramp. Lucy was able to walk about halfway out of the pool, but, exhausted and suffering from hypothermia, that was as far as she could make it on her own, the SPCA said. Responders helped her the rest of the way out of the pool and got her into a trailer, where she was transported to Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic for medical care. The SPCA said Lucy's owners were "very appreciative to everyone for their care and attentiveness to Lucy.”

Arena and pens. Also available. One acre next door is currently a rental. Buy both parcels for a complete two home setup for family or investment!!! Several more horse properties available. LAND TOO!

Terry Bradshaw selling his 144-acre Oklahoma Ranch By James Leggate

Terry Bradshaw's Oklahoma ranch features an 8,600-square-foot home and working equestrian and cattle operations across about 744 acres of pastures, lakes and rolling country hills overlooking the Red River. Now, the whole property is for sale for an unspecified price. Bradshaw, the four-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback and longtime FOX "NFL Sunday" analyst, previously listed the property in 2016 for $10.8 million. He recently told the Dallas Business Journal that he doesn't have enough time to enjoy the ranch anymore. "I have way too much going on," Bradshaw told the Journal. "It's a very sentimental thing. It's hard to sell something you started from scratch, but it's time to let someone else enjoy it."

Robert C. Norris 1929-2019

Former NCHA member and breeder passed away. Robert C. Norris, owner of the famous T-Cross Ranches of Colorado and Arizona, as well as Quarter Horse breeder, and former NCHA member, who played the first Marlboro Man on television, passed on peacefully in the care of Pikes Peak Hospice, November 3, 2019, surrounded by his family. “Bob” was born on April 10, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to Delora and Lester Norris. He attended Elgin Academy in St. Charles, Illinois, where he grew up. He attended the University of Kentucky, where he played football under Coach Paul William “Bear” Bryant. On June 24, 1950, he married his wife Jane Wright, then a recent graduate of DePauw University’s Asbury College of Liberal Arts in Green Castle, Indiana. In 1953, the couple moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where they bought the Rist Canyon ranch. As their family grew, they moved to Black Forest in 1957, and subsequently created their permanent home in the Broadmoor area. Some years later they created a winter home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Bob knew early what he wanted. He fell in love with Jane. And he fell in love with ranching. Both were love affairs of a lifetime. Though he came from a family most of whom were financiers and lawyers, he had an uncle in the ranching business who taught him the basics. In 1950 Bob went into the horse and cattle business, with one of his first purchases being the T-Cross brand—the first brand registered in Colorado. A few years later Norris established that brand with the purchase of 20,000 acres that became the start of the T-Cross Ranch south of Colorado Springs, later to be home to 150 head of horses and more than 1,000 cow and calf pairs, and eventually to expand to a 63,000-acre spread. A second ranch was later established in Arizona. After 69 years, the T-Cross Ranches have one of the most distinguished reputations in the industry, with well-established leadership in both Quarter Horse and cattle operations. If any man could be described in three words, for Bob they would be “the real deal.” His solid authenticity, whether astride a horse, sitting in a board room, mentoring a child or sharing a moment with a friend, was his personal and professional brand. No doubt it was these qualities—along with his tall, ruggedly handsome, lanky good looks—that landed him the unexpected role of the first Marlboro Man on television. The iconic commercials ran for about fourteen years in the U.S. and Europe. Rather than taking his fame seriously, he enjoyed the adventure. Bob regaled his friends with various misadventures during these shoots, often highlighting the fictional world of television with the real world of ranching he actually lived. But Bob, never a smoker, abandoned the campaign when he felt he was setting a poor example for his children. His acting career might have continued, however, when John Wayne offered him a role in the 1971 film Big Jake. Instead, he and 104

Wayne began a friendship when Bob helped with the star’s first foray into the cattle business. Wayne came to several of Norris’ horse sales and the two became close friends. Bob and Jane spent more than a dozen Thanksgivings with the Waynes at their Arizona Ranch. For a number of years, Norris was a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, also known as the Cowboy Hall of Fame, which inducted John Wayne. Norris began serving on the Board of Directors in 1972 and remained on the board until his own induction, at which time he was included in a special category: The Hall of Great Westerners. What made Bob a great Westerner were qualities like fairness and generosity, paired with shrewd management and a keen eye for quality. His cattle, including Herefords, Salers and a mix of the two, attracted attention world-wide. The ongoing development of the American Quarter Horse was one of his prime interests, and his ranches produced a long list of champions, including Tee Cross, whom Norris bred and raised. Tee Cross became an AQHA champion, winning in multiple events. Tee Cross was then retired to stud, sired thirty foals, and lived to be thirty-six. Bob continued riding Tee Cross’s offspring for many years. Norris served as 1982 American Quarter Horse Association president, as President of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association, and served on numerous boards, including the FBI Citizens Academy in Arizona, the Colorado Board of Agriculture, the Pikes Peak Cattleman’s Association, to name only a few. He received a 55- year pin for Pikes Peak Range Riders in 2017 and became an honorary member of Cowboys Artists of America. His love of the arts also brought him to the founding board of the Colorado Festival of World Theatre. Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell praised Norris for “embodying the spirit of the West.” Indeed, Bob sometimes seemed a real-life example of a Louis L’Amour character. Bob was an avid reader of L’Amour, whose own commitment to authenticity and personal experiences made his characters and stories ring true. Norris and L’Amour met and became fond acquaintances. In the 1980s, Bob was called upon to represent thirty-seven of his family members who owned stock in Texaco in what was then the largest lawsuit in the U.S. He was tasked with organizing a committee to ensure shareholders were treated fairly when Texaco, the nation’s third-largest oil company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Norris’s ancestor John Gates had been a founder of the Texas Company, which became Texaco. Bob helped negotiate the settlement down to 3 billion dollars in 48 hours, preventing a hostile takeover and saving pensions for thousands

of retirees. The experience brought Bob the nickname “The Cowboy on Wall Street.” The story is chronicled in Oil and Honor: The Texaco Penzoil Wars by Thomas Petzinger, Jr. In 2003, some unusual visitors came to the T-Cross,

when the owner of five baby elephants leased stalls. The elephants had been orphaned in Zimbabwe, rescued, and transported to the U.S. At the urging of his children, he adopted the baby elephant named Amy. When she finally

got too big for the ranch— eight feet tall and weighing in at 4,000 pounds—he sent her to Buckles Woodcock in Florida, where she enjoyed a comfortable, humane life among other elephants. In her retirement, Amy lived at

the Fresno Zoo, once again finding a home with animal companions and benevolent humans who cared for her. Norris continued to visit Amy throughout her life until her passing in 2016. She often greeted him by first waving her trunk and then hugging him around the waist with her left front foot. The unusual relationship between Cowboy Bob and Amy the Elephant is chronicled in A Cowboy and His Elephant by Malcolm MacPherson, published in 2001. The beautiful story is told again in the children’s book Cowboys Love Elephants Too by his daughter Carole Sondrup, which was published in 2018 and won the prestigious 2019 Mom’s Choice Award. Bob had a special affinity for animals. He often spoke about the love and respect he had for them, qualities that were abundantly obvious in the way he communicated with them, and the way they responded to him. He shared this love for animals in many ways, including special rides he arranged for disabled children, who for the first time were able to enjoy a transformative experience in the great outdoors. Bob was a man of unassuming manner that belied his vast accomplishments. A devoted husband and father, he doted on his grand-children and great-grandchildren, and cherished the homes he and his wife created, not just for their expansive beauty and exquisite taste, but because they were the heart of activity for family and friends. Bob and Jane loved their communities and their friends. They were the oldest members of the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club, and decadeslong members of Garden of the Gods Club, continued on page 106

Broadmoor Golf Club, and the Paradise Valley Country Club in Arizona. Often creating special gatherings that were both elegant and casual in these favorite spots, they offered convivial gatherings, extending the warmth of their friendship to an everwidening sphere. Norris considered the highlight of his life to be “the joys of family working together” on the ranch. The family legacy continues with the T-Cross ranches in Colorado and Arizona, and with son Bobby’s successful ranch and horse-training operation near Fort Worth, Texas. Did Bob ever retire? He made his last range ride in 2017, but always remained actively engaged in ranch operations, and avidly interested in the future through his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. “It’s been a good run,” he once said. He never sold his saddle. He knew he’d need it when it was time to ride into the sunset. Bob is survived by his eldest sister Lavern Gaynor of Naples, Florida; and by his and Jane’s four children: Steve Norris; Carole Sondrup and son-in-law Ron Sondrup of Windsor, Colorado; Leslie Penkhus and son-in-law Bob Penkhus of Colorado Springs; and Bobby Norris and daughter-inlaw JJ Norris of Ft. Worth, Texas. Bob is also survived by thirteen grandchildren including (children of Steve Norris) Shada Brazil,

Bob is also survived by eighteen great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Friday, November 8 at 1:00pm - 3:00pm at the Norris Penrose Event Center, 1045 Lower Gold Camp Road, Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Roundup for Autism www. roundupforautism.org or to TAPS ( Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) www.taps.org\colorado which helps families of fallen veterans.
