Doug Carpenter Lost to Covid AQHA is saddened by the loss of Doug Carpenter and sends condolences to his family and friends
Doug Carpenter, of Sulphur, Oklahoma, has passed away due to complications from COVID-19 at age 64. Born in 1957 in Rhode Island, Carpenter developed a passion for horses at a young age. When he was 13, Carpenter hitchhiked to Columbus, Ohio, to experience the 1970 All American Quarter Horse Congress. Although he slept on bleachers in the Coliseum and knew he would return to angry, worried parents, he was hooked, and knew one day he would show horses at that prestigious horse show. After honing his horsemanship skills in Connecticut, trainer Tommy Manion took notice. Carpenter turned down a job offer from Tommy in 1976 for another opportunity, but two years later found himself working for the legendary trainer. In 1978, Tommy assigned Carpenter an unbroke 2-year-old mare in June to train and finish for the Congress Western Pleasure Futurity in October. Showing for the first time at that year’s Congress, Carpenter rode the 2-year-old Good Lookin Babe to a reserve title and a check for $10,000, beating his boss, who came in third. A few years later, having grown frustrated with showing, Carpenter decided to trade horses for NASCAR and move to North Carolina. Thinking the 1981 AQHA World Championship Show would be his last, he didn’t even bother to change out of his work shirt when he showed Karen Sullivan’s 3-year-old mare, Miss Docs Melody, in the first go of junior western pleasure. He placed first in the prelims and came back in front of a crowd of more than 6,000 people to win his first AQHA world championship. Needless to say, Carpenter ended up staying with horses. As a professional trainer, Carpenter trained and showed clients’ and his own horses, including the NSBA Hall of Fame stallion Hotrodders Jet Set, proving he had the knack for picking good horses and training them to be competitive. His training skills took him to John Mulholland in 1982, where there were many top show mares as well as promising 2-year-olds and yearlings, including the great Ms MBJ Mudlark, whom he showed successfully. After tiring of the show arena, Carpenter partnered with Keith Whistle in 1987, where he would prepare horses for the show arena for Keith as well as for amateur and youth riders. Carpenter had $70,890.89 in lifetime NSBA earnings, but the horses whose reins Carpenter touched tell the greater story of his great eye and matchmaking skills. Just some of those horses he interacted with were: Miss Docs Melody, Hotrodders Jet Set, Sheza Kinda Fancy, Time To Cash In, Docs Bo Doll, Racy Rumors, Paint Me Zippo, Cuition, Miss Surely Bars and TNT Fluid Fred. After the tragic death of his amateur client and friend Rodney Miller in 1992, Carpenter moved to the world of reining, where he represented and sold quality horses. He bought or sold such standout individuals as 1992 National Reining Horse Association Futurity champion Boomernic, 1999 National Reined Cow Horse 14

Association Futurity champion Smart Zanolena, 2003 NRCHA Futurity champion Chics Magic Potion and 2007 World’s Greatest Horseman champion Light N Fine, as well as top money-earning performers Jac Be Quick, Roosters Wrangler, Hes Dun His Time and Bueno Chexinic. As an owner, Carpenter earned $89,927 in lifetime NRHA earnings, in addition to $30,839 as an open rider. At the time of his death, Carpenter continued to purchase and broker top reining, cutting and reined cow horses, as well as promising Thoroughbred racing prospects through his business, Doug Carpenter Enterprises. In 1996, Carpenter and NSBA editor Carolyn Pryor teamed up to publish “Western Pleasure: Training and Showing To Win,” the essential book on training and competing in the western pleasure discipline that became an industry must-have for exhibitors everywhere. In addition to his talent in the saddle, Carpenter was an avid photographer, shooting everything from landscapes to sale horse photos. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Gwen, daughters Kelly and Katie, and granddaughter, Emma.

Britt Smith's rookie season is best described with a quote from motivational speaker Les Brown: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Although Smith had his sights on the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and was focused on team roping, he finished at the top of the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for the all-around title. "To be honest, I'm glad to win it but I don't want to be remembered as winning the rookie deal," Britt said. "I want to make it to the NFR, that's the main goal, but it definitely makes me feel good. If that's all I'm remembered for, then it's not much since there are quite a few years left in me." Britt made a run at the All-Around Rookie of the Year during the final leg of the 2020 season by entering about a half-dozen competitions in tie-down roping, but it wasn't until the Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas, that everything came together for the Broken Bow, Okla., cowboy. "I didn't have it for sure at all until the last day, it all came down to the last minute," said Britt, 19. "I wasn't too stressed about it though since I like tie-down roping anyway." With his older brother Jake as his team roping partner, the siblings made successful runs at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ($4,200), the Parker County Sheriffs Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas, ($3,158), and Mandan (N.D.) Rodeo Days ($3,154). Britt and Jake have big boots to fill as the younger brothers of reigning two-time world champion team roping header Clay Smith (2018-19). But having strong family ties to the rodeo world is a big help.
18
Britt's main team roping horse colicked around the time of the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo, so he had to switch mounts near the end of July. "My oldest brother Clay's father-in-law (Jason Richey) has been letting me ride a dun horse of his the last couple of months," Britt said. "I don't own him, but I'm blessed to have good family." For tie-down roping, Britt rides an American Quarter Horse bay gelding called Hank that his sister-in-law (Jake Smith's wife, Brandi) uses for breakaway roping. "Jake lives about 50 feet away from my house, so I see him every day and my oldest brother (Clay) lives about three and a half hours away, but we talk regularly about horses and all kinds of stuff," Britt said. "It used to be him giving advice, and now we send videos of us roping and are always trying to help each other, so it's an advantage having brothers who have been there and done that." Although his family roots run deep in the rodeo world, Britt still had plenty to learn his rookie year. "There's a lot of ups and downs, with more downs than ups, and it's mainly a mental game, so you can't let yourself get too far down," Britt said. With the 2020 season in the rear-view mirror, Britt is looking forward to competing at as many ProRodeo competitions as possible in 2021. "It was definitely a weird year, but I said from the get-go that everyone got to go to the same rodeos, so you definitely had to capitalize on the bigger rodeos," Smith said. The $21,778 he won during his rookie season will help make that happen. "Well, it's for sure something I wanted when I was hoping to win the rookie title for (team roping) heading, but I missed out on that," Smith said. "But the bigger picture is the NFR."

Rancho Rio Horse Sale March 5th
Since it’s inception, The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio has become the leading rope horse sale in the country and the premier horse sale of the Team Roping Capital of the World. Held each year in Wickenburg, Arizona, in conjunction with the National Team Roping Finals, The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio is limited to 65 top rope horses and draws consignors and buyers from all over the U.S. and
Barrett-Jackson auction,” Friskup said in an interview with The Team Roping Journal. “It’s the same way with ropers. You can expect to take in an overload of your favorite sport."
In 2020, the sixth edition of The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio moved more than $1.3 million in rope horses and has surpassed the million-dollar mark in total sales since 2019. Most consignors have their horses in Arizona for buyers to watch at jackpots well in advance of the sale and we encourage buyers to take advantage. Reach out, do your research, and go try any horses that you might be interested in. The 2021 Horse Sale at Rancho Rio will offer a full team roping preview on Thursday, March 4, with the auction slated to take place on Friday, March 5. Follow Rancho Rio on Facebook for updates.

AZ Racing Commission Approves Race Dates for
TURF PARADISE
On Thursday (Nov.12) the Arizona Racing Commission approved Turf Paradise’s request to host an 84-day meet (Jan. 4-May 1, 2021) by a 3-0 vote. In a separate agenda item the Commission also approved a contract between the track
and Monarch by 2-1 vote. The meet signals a return to racing which had been absent in the state since when the track cancelled its in progress live race meet March 14, due to the Coronavirus. The contract approval will now require a special Commission meeting to approve the individual contracts for simulcasting of the tracks under the Monarch umbrella. Those tracks include Santa Anita, Del Mar, Golden Gate, Sonoma County Fair, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Pimlico, Timonium, Monmouth Park, Meadowlands, Los Alamitos thoroughbreds, Australia and Latin American racing. Turf has been without the Monarch signals for the past 294 days. “It was a good day for Arizona horsemen and Arizona horseplayers,” said track general manager Vincent Francia.

2021 Inductees of the National Cowgirl Museum
The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame will welcome five 2021 Inductees at the 45th Annual Induction Luncheon and Ceremony. The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the Dickies Arena. These incoming Hall of Fame members represent a wide range of cowgirls – from a country music superstar, to a world champion breakaway roper, a renowned artist, cowboy hat designer and an Olympic medalist. The induction class includes Pop Chalee, Lari Dee Guy, Kathryn Kusner, Lavonna “Shorty” Koger and Miranda Lambert. “We are honored to welcome this outstanding class of inductees and add their remarkable stories and accomplishments to the amazing group of honorees they are joining in the Museum’s Hall of Fame,” said the Museum’s executive director Patricia Riley. “Congratulations to all.” The late artist Pop Chalee (1906-1993) was known for her influential flat, two-dimensional "traditional" style of Native American painting with stylized depictions of forest scenes and wildlife. She painted murals for the Albuquerque Airport in 1945. Her work has been featured at museums such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Gallery of Living Artists in New York City. Her paintings can be found in many permanent collections, including at the Gilcrease Museum, the Heard Museum and the Millicent Rogers Museum. Eight-time Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Lari Dee Guy is the winningest female roper in the world with over 33 championship titles and more than $1.5 million in career earnings. This all started from her early beginnings of winning 11-consecutive AJRA world roping titles at age nine. In Pop Chalee 2013, Guy launched the Photo: by Jack Hopkins Jr. “Rope Like A Girl” campaign to help motivate young girls and women in roping and has traveled the globe teaching. She is also an expert horse trainer and renowned clinician. Kathryn Kusner is an American equestrian and Olympic medalist in show jumping. She was one of the first women who rode for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) and the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in equestrian competition. Concurrent to her show jumping career, Miranda Lambert Photograph by Ellen Von Unwerth Kusner became the first 32
licensed female jockey in the United States in 1968. She was also the first woman to ride in the Maryland Hunt Cup, the toughest timber race in the world, despite its board trying to keep her from riding in the race. Lavonna “Shorty” Koger is an Oklahoma native with over 40 years of experience in restoration, fitting, sewing and design of cowboy hats. She started Shorty’s Caboy Hattery in 1990 in the historic Stockyards City, OK, one of the few entirely womanowned and operated custom hatteries in the United States and is one of today’s leading industry hatters. Shorty’s hats remain worldfamous and are sought-after for their attention to detail, intricate sewing process and signature beaver fur and beaver fur blends. She also helped found Rein in Cancer, a nonprofit that raises money to fund cancer treatments and care for patients. Miranda Lambert is a renowned country music superstar and songwriter who started her career in local Texas bars and released her self-titled debut album independently in 2001. Later she was signed by Sony Music and has since released seven albums as well as three albums with her trio, Pistol Annies. She has won many awards, amongst them 35 ACM awards, which makes her the most decorated artist in ACM history, nine of which were consecutive ACM Female Artist of the year awards. In addition, she received two Grammy Awards and 14 CMA Awards. Lambert and her mother, Bev Lambert founded the MuttNation Foundation in 2009 to shine a spotlight on rescue animals and shelters, raising in excess of $4.5 million since its inception.

New Name, Same Great Product – Introducing
SMART BEET PELLETS or SHREDS
Smart Beet Training Date: 11/6/2020
Beet pulp is a by-product of the sugar industry.
Sugar is extracted from the beet leaving the pulp. The sugar finds its way into foods and grocery stores, while the pulp is used as an ingredient in animal feeds (less than 5% sugar). Beet pulp is rich in fiber and is unique in its form, as it is soluble fiber and highly digestible.
New Name, Same Great Product – Introducing “Smart Beet”
Why change the name from “Beet Pulp” to “Smart Beet”? Our Standlee Premium Beet Pulp Pellets and Shreds are made up of dried pulp and Concentrated Separator By-Product (CSB). CSB is a secondary molasses produced during the separation of sugar from regular sugar beet molasses. Due to labeling regulations in select states requiring products with more than one ingredient to not have a single ingredient name (i.e., Beet Pulp), we have changed only the name to “Smart Beet.” Everything else is the same, from the quality ingredients used, to the incredible benefits of adding beet pulp to horse and livestock feed programs.

TUF COOPER WAS BORN INTO RODEO GREATNESS
The son of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy “Super Looper” Cooper and Shari Smith Cooper, the caboose of this unparalleled cowboy dynasty grew up with highly respected roping grandfathers on both sides of his royal rodeo pedigree. Tuf and his brothers, Clif and Clint, have made pro rodeo history more than once as the only set of three tie-down roping brothers to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo the same year.
TUF COOPER
Tuf’s sister, Shada, also has competed at Rodeo’s Super Bowl, and her husband/ Tuf’s brother-in-law, Trevor Brazile, just happens to be the winningest rodeo cowboy of all time. Like Tuf and Trevor, Tuf’s Uncle Stran Smith also is a World Champion Tie-Down Roper. Yes, winning is a family tradition. And Tuf Cooper is just the man for the job of taking this torch to even greater heights. He’s that rare combination of naturally gifted athlete with a work ethic that won’t quit and the mental strength it takes to withstand the pressure cooker that comes with all worldclass professional sports. - Dad – Roy Cooper 8x World Champion - Brother – Clif 6x NFR qualifier - Brother – Clint 5x NFR qualifier
“Winning means everything to me, and not just in the arena,” Cooper said. “The rodeo world has shown me the importance of winning in all areas of life, and that’s my goal all day, every day. Every morning when I wake up, I read my Daily Devotion, and I write down, ‘Win the day,’ along with where I am and the date. Then I work hard to do whatever it takes to get that done. “People are the best part of every professional sport, and in my line of work that goes for my cowboy friends, and all the people I get to meet along the way. It means a lot to me that people go out of their way to connect with me in some way, and I want to make everybody’s experience the best it can be. Making someone else’s day does more for me than that other person. That’s what it’s all about.” Tuf already owns several of the NFR gold buckles that go to the World Champion Tie-Down Roper. Tuf became the youngest cowboy millionaire in professional rodeo history when he cleared that magical milestone right after his 23rd birthday. In December of 2017, Tuf took center stage of the cowboy sport, winning the most prestigious of all professional rodeo titles as the World Champion All-Around Cowboy. 34

and I had the chance to take the reins over a couple years ago. My dad is passionate about helping calf roping stay alive and the only way to do so is by helping the younger generations stay hooked and excited about doing this for a living. He thought having a Championship roping for the kids in Vegas was a great way to show them what it’s like to get to the top of this business. That there is a chance for some to be successful and Vegas is what that looks like. This year it won’t be in Vegas but the kids will still have a chance to rope in Fort Worth. to do what we do. We get to be cowboys. People in the city think it’s cool to wear a cowboy hat and we get to put one on everyday to do what we love. I have a great support system in my wife and who I have around me. They make sure we just have fun and don’t let the pressure get to us.
Q Keeping horses shod correctly is a real challenge, how do you do it?
wanting to win?
A Be happy when you don’t win. If you’re
only happy when you win you’re going to be mad a lot. Once you get to a level of roping competitively, it’s mostly about controlling your mind. So what I’ve learned is not to let your failures control your attitude. That’s why you’ll see me smile in the arena even when I don’t do the best at roping.
A It is a challenge. On the road it’s really
hard with different ground conditions and it being wet and dry. Horses hooves are hard to keep intact but I have a great horse DECEMBER 2020

A Topaz is such a special horse, and
her along with her trainer James Barton, they helped me and my career so much. Unfortunately Topaz has been out due to an injury this year, so I have been riding a full sister to her. Her name is Jewel. She’s owned by a couple of Brazilian ranches. Paddock Ranch and Fazenda Sapucaia and managed by my friend Flavio Ribeiro. She has done a great job and keeps getting better. She is still younger so I see a great future for her and I in the PRCA.

TUF COOPER FAMILY ALBUM Dad -
My Dad, the Super Looper. Thanks for coming to help me practice even in the cold.
“For years I let people tell me I shouldn’t get married until I was a certain age, until I’d been with someone for a long time or until I accomplished my goals. I was told that it would hurt my career to even have a girlfriend. So I listened to people instead of God. How many times has that happened to you? How hard is it to know if it’s God or people you hear? It’s hard! It’s happened plenty of times to me. I’ve let people keep me from what God had planned for me. I let people keep me from shining my light on someone who stood in the background holding my horse, drove the all night drives, worked the chutes, fed, saddled, cleaned stalls, cooked, took care of me and most importantly loved me for who I was to her, not for who I was to the world. This woman would lay down her life for me and I didn’t do right by her until I listened to God and not people. The night I asked Tif to marry me wasn’t planned, wasn’t what most people would do, no one else knew I was going to do it, people didn’t like it, I didn’t have a ring and I was as nervous as I’ve ever been. But that night I listened to God. Who told me it was time to shine my light on the woman HE chose for me. So I took the night I’d worked for all my life, the accomplishment that meant so much to me and gave it to her. She’s strong, hard headed, doesn’t take crap from anyone but she’s also sweet, caring, loving and there isn’t another woman in the world that would have been so patient with God and I.” 36

Congratulations to my brother in law Trevor on his 25th gold buckle! Thank you for always helping me and being a great role model all these years.
Tiffany-
Have you met my ex girlfriend? That’s how I’ve been introducing my wife to people lately. The number one question I get now a days is , “How’s married life?” My answer, “It’s awesome! I should have done it a long time ago.”and that’s the truth. DECEMBER 2020

Q What are these products
even horses that aren’t in a daily exercise regimen, as I mentioned in your first question, still require daily nutrients to stay healthy. You can optimize your horse’s health by supplying them with a balancer that won’t add calories to a horse that gets little exercise, such as Stride 101 by Stride Animal Health that Premier Feed in the Phoenix or Mesa area or Holy Cow Feed in the Tucson area can supply to you.
calling themselves “Hay Balancers” for horses?
A Hay Balancers are
formulated to assist horses in getting their daily essential nutrients that are lacking in hay. This is one reason I believe hay testing can play a large role in horses diets. For example copper and zinc are essential nutrients for healthy coat and hooves that a hay test will show deficiencies of both copper and zinc. Balancers

A Using hay nets is a great
tool to free feed forage. By nature, Horses are grazing animals that will typically graze 17 hours per day. When we allow our domesticated horses to free feed, the saliva produced during mastication helps buffer their stomach acid which in turn will protect against ulcers.
Q We always soak cubes, and
pellets, before feeding. What do you think about that?
DECEMBER 2020
A I always recommend
following the manufacturer’s directions when feeding cubes or pellets. I would agree that soaking pellets and cubes correctly is a great practice, it helps reduce choking and adds moisture to the diet. I highly recommend Mountain Sunrise pellets because of their size, their low sugar and starch content and their consistency in using quality forage for their selection of pellets.
Q How can money be
saved on the cost of feeding performance horses?
A This is something I work on
daily with my clients. Saving money for horse owners and trainers is just as important to me as supplying their horses with the best nutrition that is available. When I formulate their diets with high quality, fully fortified feeds such as Bluebonnet, Triple Crown or Tribute it gives me the ability to reduce feed rate and remove all unnecessary supplements. If you sit-down with folks and do a personal consultation on their feeding program how long does it take to figure out, and what are the benefits? Every consultation is different and has many factors that can dictate the amount of time needed to formulate the new feed program. Two of the major benefits of a Nutritional Consultation we touched on in the previous questions. The first being, getting your horse on the proper nutritional regimen that will be best suited for it. The second important benefit is money savings while providing better nutrition for your horse.

PBR Bucks Bulls on Aircraft Carrier, raising $250,000 for Military Charities Capt. Bob Batterson U.S. Navy - Retired
One week ago, the professional bull riding ecosystem was on a high after handing out a gold buckle and $1 million check at a triumphant PBR World Finals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The accomplishment of completing the 2020 season by crowning an extraordinary young champion, Jose Vitor Leme, in the NFL’s largest stadium in front of nearly 44,000 sociallydistanced fans across four action-packed days during a pandemic was not lost on anyone who has lived or followed every twisting turn and unplanned detour to this improbable season.
What do you do for an encore? A week later, PBR and its partners merely raised the stakes — going downstate to Corpus Christi to hold a spectacular exhibition team event atop of the famed USS Lexington Museum and launch its new charitable initiative “Cowboys for a Cause.” Bringing 15 cowboys, serious bull power and 300 tons of dirt onto the 872-foot long launch deck atop the “Blue Ghost” was a way to thank fans and members of the military who put life and limb on the line so everyone in the Western sports industry can do what they love and support their families. The special team tournament raised $250,000 for Operation Homefront and other military charities through support of league partners including Ford, Wrangler, Pendleton Whisky, Bad Boy Mowers and South Point Hotel & Casino. For each qualified ride, Ford pledged $25,000 to its seven Proud to Honor charities, for a total of $200,000. Additionally, $25,000 was donated to Operation Homefront by Wrangler on behalf of the winning squad, Team Bad Boy Mowers, and $25,000 from Bad Boy Mowers to Operation Homefront. An aircraft carrier event had long been on the bucket list of PBR Commissioner Sean Gleason, who has presided over bull riding spectacles in places like Huntington Beach in California and Times Square in Manhattan. Memorable as they were, those events would pale in comparison to the sheer audacity of loading bulls onto the Blue Ghost’s still-functioning aircraft elevator to buck on the 872-foot flight deck of the carrier docked in Corpus Christi Bay for an audience of a few dozen VIP fans on the ship and millions watching on CBS television network. 46
Gleason, his team and PBR’s key partners wanted to put an exclamation point on what has already been a season of startling accomplishments for a league long been considered “niche.” PBR had pioneered the return of live sports after the COVID-19 shutdown, was first to welcome fans into the arena with new safety protocols, created a new Monster Energy Team Challenge keeping the sport going during the summer, and would eventually implement its industry-leading safety protocols to hold 20 event weekends, 13 with fans in the stands. “PBR may have done incredible things in leading sports back to competition during a very challenging year, but none of it is possible without the sacrifice and service of our military,” Gleason said. “It felt appropriate to end the 2020 season on a note of gratitude and awe – on top of a U.S. aircraft carrier symbolizing the sacrifices of freedom while supporting military charities. I want to thank our partners who made this unforgettable event possible, our fans for sticking with us all year long, our cowboys and stock contractors for putting on a great show, and most of all, the heroic men and women selflessly serving our country so we can do what we love.” With every ride helping military charities, who actually won the PBR US Air Force Reserve Cowboys for a Cause is nearly an afterthought. Make no mistake, the bulls did their jobs and the riders on this grand stage stepped up their game as well. The competition aboard the ship matched the magnitude of the event; there were eight qualified rides in 15 outs, including several 90-point rides. Watching bull riding in such a powerful, majestic venue left everyone, including approximately 60 fans who had purchased VIP packages, awestruck. “We will never, ever forget this – it was indescribably cool,” said PBR fan Evelyn Robinson, who with her sister Cynthia has been to dozens of PBR events. “Seeing bull riding on the flight deck was amazing. The bulls came out with guns firing on the carrier, and there were some really good rides.” Robinson spoke with PBR.com from Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon as the sisters from California sat and gazed at the aircraft carrier, which had been nearly sunk four times during World War II and kept coming back, leading Japanese propagandists to dub her “The Blue Ghost.” They had extended their trip for another tour of the legendary carrier. “There really are no words for what we experienced,” she said. “This is one for the books. I’m not sure how PBR will ever top this.”

Jared Fillmore leads 2020 Team Roping Heeling permit Standings
Team roping heeler Jared Fillmore filled his permit and solidified his position at the top of the 2020 PRCA | RAM Rodeo Permit Standings with a $25,000 check for placing second at The American in Arlington, Texas, March 8. Partnered with Colby Lovell at the time, the duo posted a 4.61-second run in the Shootout round of The American. Two days later he began his ProRodeo rookie season, but the COVID-19 pandemic put that on pause until the end of May. "It (the permit standings) wasn't really in my thoughts, but I saw that and felt good about it," said Fillmore, 20. "My goals were on bigger things than

that, but it was kind of cool. I didn't grow up around rodeo, so for it being my very first year doing rodeo ever, to be able to have the success I had was a big blessing and pretty awesome." When competitions resumed, the Utah cowboy partnered with Casey Tew, and they held their own against teams often found at the National Finals Rodeo. Some of their summer run successes included picking up $1,593 at the Ute Stampede in Nephi, Utah, and $1,403 at the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo in Castle Rock, Colo. "It (COVID-19) put a stop to what I had going after The American and definitely had a big effect on what I had going," Fillmore said. "But, no matter how hard it is or how bad it gets, the person who never quits will end up on top." Despite having a significantly stunted rookie season that really didn't start until June, Fillmore finished fifth in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for team roping heeling with $3,583. Although he won The American on a horse called Jingles, he finished the season on Scooter, a 5-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding. "He's a little bit bigger and a little bit faster and has some athletic ability that helped me with my game a little more," Fillmore said. Fillmore is gearing up for fulltime competition in 2021 with his eyes on qualifying for next year's NFR. "It (finishing at the top of the permit standings) gives a little insight on what it takes to win, to win more than I ever have and helps me prepare for what I am going to have to do to accomplish the goals that I have," Fillmore said.

Emily Nietrzeba, an equine specialist veterinarian with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, said humans can not contract the disease, but people can carry the infection and transmit the virus between horses. The Riverside County Department of Animal Services today warned horse owners to beware of an equine influenza outbreak that has killed an estimated three dozen wild burros in the region. County and state officials are monitoring the outbreak while urging horse owners to check in with their veterinarians about booster vaccines for previously vaccinated animals.

New Wireless Capsule System reveals inside story of the Equine Gut
Canadian researchers exploring the use of a wireless endoscopy capsule to inspect the inside of the equine gastrointestinal tract say the method appears safe, practical and non-invasive. The “Alicam system” capsule is 11mm in diameter and 33mm long. It contains 4 micro-cameras, mounted at 90° to provide a 360°panoramic view. The cameras are activated by movement (this helps prolong the battery life and so increase the length of the digestive tract that can be imaged.) When activated, the cameras record images at the rate of 20 / second and store them on the capsule’s internal memory chip. “It can be frustrating for clinicians to diagnose intestinal lesions in horses because no methods allow a thorough examination of the intestinal tract from an internal perspective aboral to the stomach,” the researchers said. Five healthy adult horses with no signs or history of gastrointestinal disease from the University of Calgary’s teaching herd were included in the study. Three different protocols in terms of exercise, feeding and water intake were used, and the researchers found that the one giving the most useful images was to starve the horse for 24 hours before introducing the capsule. Satisfactory images were obtained of the pylorus, major duodenal papilla, individual villi, and ileocecal junction. Visualization of large intestinal mucosa was poor. Images are available for inspection only once the capsule has passed through the digestive tract and has been retrieved from the manure (using radiography). On average, it took 6.5 days from introduction for the capsule to be retrieved in the manure. Three of the 15 capsules administered during the study by researchers at the University of Calgary were
62
not recovered. Among the abnormalities identified on the images were mucosal erosion, ulceration and haemorrhage, areas of thickened mucosa, and evidence of parasitism. The researchers concluded: “this novel endoscopic capsule appears safe, practical, and non-invasive in horses; however, variability in capsule excretion time must be taken into account for clinical application.” Imaging techniques currently used are mainly limited to gastric and pyloric examination using long endoscopes, or to ultrasonography of the abdomen, which allows visualization of only a portion of the intestinal tract and rarely allows visualization of intraluminal structures. They noted that capsule devices had been approved for human use for over a decade, and had been used successfully in dogs to evaluate both small and large intestinal mucosa. The researchers noted that several capsule systems have been used in horses and ponies, using radiofrequency technology coupled with external sensors to receive data from the capsule. “However, this can be problematic in adult horses with larger body mass because of decrease in signal strength, which can result in intermittent loss of communication between the capsule signal and the external sensors.” They said the diagnostic capability of these capsule systems was further impeded by short battery life and limited viewing angles. The research team comprised Mei Steinmann, Stephanie Bond, and Renaud Léguillette, all with the University of Calgary, Rebecca J. Bezugley from Alberta’s Moore Equine Veterinary Centre, and Jill S. Pomrantz from Infiniti Medical in California.

La Fiesta de los Vaqueros after 95 Years Cancels for 2021
Tucson (Ariz.) Rodeo 2021 has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers confirmed Nov. 12. La Fiesta de los Vaqueros was scheduled for Feb. 20-28. "With the amount of planning that goes into this event, we feel there is too much uncertainty to take the chance of continuing forward at this time," said Mark Baird, Chairman of the Board, Tucson Rodeo. In February 2020, the rodeo celebrated 95 years of history. The event is one of the biggest events in Tucson, bringing people from around the world to the Old Pueblo to watch the top cowboys and cowgirls compete. The Tucson Rodeo Committee is planning for the return of the Tucson Rodeo, Feb. 19-27, 2022.

TURF PARADISE 84-Day Meet Beginning January 10th
After breaking stride near the finish line, Turf Paradise management and the Arizona Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (AZHBPA) have finally signed an agreement to host an 84-day live race meet, running from January 4 thru May 1, 2021.
68
An eleventh hour snafu over wording in the Agreement between the two parties caused the 24-hour deadline for submission of agenda items to the Arizona Racing Commission to be missed. The Commission is scheduled to meet in special session tomorrow (Friday, October 30) to approve the race dates, as well to consider contracts for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup simulcasts. The Commission will still meet to approve the contracts. The request for approval of the 84-day meet will now be scheduled for the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Commission on November 12. “Many thanks to Arizona Racing Director Rudy Casillas for hosting the forum for dialogue between the two parties,” said Turf’s general manager Vincent Francia. “An equal amount of thanks to AZHBPA President Bob Hutton and track owner Jerry Simms for committing to dialogue until everything was resolved. Now, it’s time to race.” The 84-day meet will be conducted on a 5-day a week schedule, Monday thru Friday with post time set for 12:30 pm. The lone exception to the schedule is Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, May 1. Horsemen arrived since Nov. 19 to prepare their stalls; horses arrived Nov. 25. The first condition book and stakes schedule are published at www.turfparadise.com. “There’s a lot to do in a short time,” said Francia. “But we’ll be ready.”

Muehlstaetter New Million Dollar Rider
At just 12 years old, Martin Muehlstaetter knew he wanted to train reining horses for a living. He is now, unofficially, the newest National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Million Dollar Rider. Originally from Villach, Austria, Muehlstaetter’s first official mount was a warmblood on a lunge line. As the years passed, he would continue riding everything from
warmbloods to haflingers and all other breeds in between until he became an assistant trainer for NRHA Million Dollar Rider Rudi Kronsteiner in 1999. After three years of tutelage under Kronsteiner, Muehlstaetter was set to become an assistant trainer in Italy. Fate had other plans and he ended up in Texas before working for some of NRHA’s founding fathers: Bob Avila, and
NRHA Million Dollar Rider Dell Hendricks, and Todd Sommers. “When I told my mom I wanted to be a reining horse trainer, she told me there was no such thing,” said Muehlstaetter who now resides in Scottsdale, Arizona. “Ever since then I’ve always been focused on reining horses. That’s where my heart and soul is at.” In January 2007, Muehlstaetter moved to

Scottsdale to be with his future wife, Kim, and then stepped out on his own as a professional. One of the first horses Muehlstaetter trained from the ground up as his own boss was Country Custom (Custom Crome x Calatrava). “We bought Custom as an early yearling and I did all the work from there until he hit the show pen,” Muehlstaetter said. “He was a special horse and now he’s living out retirement in our front field.” Together, Muehlstaetter and Country Custom finished in the top ten at major NRHA events across the country in both the Open Level(L) 3 and 4. Muehlstaetter’s biggest payday to date came at the 2014 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC). Marking a 226, Muehlstaetter and Blue Collar Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Kachina Oak Olena) finished in the number one spot for both Open L3 and 4. Another one of Muehlstaetter’s top finishes was at the 2017 NRHA Futurity where he placed fourth in the Open L4 finals riding Seven On Seven (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Anne Get Your Gunner). Muehlstaetter humbly credits his success in the reining industry to his team standing on the sidelines for every run. “I want to thank everybody who’s been part of this journey, from my family and my wife to all the shoers, vets, grooms, assistant trainers,” Muehlstaetter said. “Without the right people in your corner, a trainer can only reach a certain level. And it doesn’t matter how good you are if you don’t have clients to supply horses. I’ve been especially lucky in that regard.”

Lotsa Mischief Topper at Arizona Mixed Sale
A yearling filly by Lotsa Mischief was sold for $17,500 to top the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fall Mixed Sale held Nov. 19 at the Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Ariz. The sale topper (Hip 50), bought by Randy Howg from her Arizona breeder, Fleming Thoroughbred Farm, was produced from the winning Officer mare Miss Lieutenant, whose additional produce include black-type-placed Tactical Rocket, restricted stakes winner Lieutenant Margie, and stakes-placed Bonita Boss. The filly's third dam, the stakes winner and graded-placed Bishop's Delight, produced stakes winner Tactical Delight and is granddam of Canadian champion Delightful Mary and grade 2 winner Delightful Kiss. A son of leading sire Into Mischief, Lotsa Mischief won the 2014 Turf Paradise Derby and is the fourthleading Arizona sire of 2020 with progeny earnings of
$163,771. The 9-year-old, whose first foals are 3-yearolds of 2020, stands at Fleming Thoroughbred Farm in Willcox, Ariz., for a private fee. Howg also purchased the second-highest priced horse of the sale that was also bred in Arizona and consigned by Fleming, going to $17,000 for a Ministers Wild Cat colt (Hip 33). The colt was produced from multiple stakes winner Cave Springs, who was Arizona's champion 3-year-old filly and is the dam of state champions Myrcella and Arizona Sun, as well as stakes winner Heber. A 20-year-old stakes-winning son of Deputy Minister, Ministers Wild Cat stands at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, Calif., where his 2020 fee was $4,000. Among the leading sires in California, Ministers Wild Cat's progeny have earned more than $21.9 million.
The sale grossed $223,200 for 47 horses sold, for an average price of $4,749, and a $3,000 median. The 21 head that went unsold represented an RNA rate of 30.9%. Jose Vitor Leme
PBR 2020 World Champion
Jose Vitor Leme climbed into a white golf cart in the bowels of AT&T Stadium just before 11 p.m. on Saturday night and grabbed his cell phone out of his pocket. The newly minted World Champion’s iPhone would not stop buzzing as the golf cart hummed its way toward the ramp that exits the home of the Dallas Cowboys onto East Randol Mill Road. Leme let out a laugh and shook his head in disbelief. “This is crazy,” he said, looking down at his phone. “So many people are messaging me. I can’t keep up.” Leme turned his head toward the left and peered inside the arena, giving himself one more glance at where he had just ridden Woopaa for 95.75 points to clinch the 2020 PBR World Championship about an hourand-a-half earlier. “This journey is amazing,” Leme said. “This is my dream. My life. But I know there is still plenty of work to do.” Leme finally had a small moment to exhale and sit back in the aftermath of his title-clinching ride. The cool breeze amidst the Arlington, Texas, night was a welcome relief to the 24-year-old, who still had dirt on the brow of his forehead. As the golf cart slowed to a stop just before Lot 4, where Leme’s white 2017 Ford F-350 was parked, Leme paused before hopping into his truck to make the quick 2.5-mile, five-minute drive back to the Hilton Arlington. He looked back at the stadium where he had finally achieved his lifelong dream. “You see, someday I want to be like J.B. (Mauney),” Leme said. “People love him. The fans. The 90-point rides. He is the best. There is still so much I want to accomplish. I have always said I wanted to be a World Champion, and if I got that accomplished, I know I want to be a two-time World Champion. But, really, I want to be the record-breaker. I want do so something impossible, something nobody has ever done. “I have that drive. I always want to do better and do the impossible because I know I can do it.” The PBR will be releasing a documentary on Leme's successful 2020 season called "Chasing History with Jose Vitor Leme" in the coming weeks on its social media channels.

From reined cow horse to reining then barrel racing, Lisa Lockhart’s An Oakie With Cash gives his all every time. An Oakie With Cash is any breeder’s dream: He inherited the best from both parents. He’s cowy, he can drop his hind end in the ground and drag his tail, and he is fast. Very, very fast. That mix of athletic traits has been a winning combination in a multitude of events, and it was first apparent in reined cow horse events. That’s where “Louie,” now a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo round winner with barrel racing all-star Lisa Lockhart, got his start. The 2003 buckskin gelding is by Biebers Oakie, a ranch and performance stallion, grandson of National Cutting Horse Association Derby champion Doc’s Lynx. Louie’s dam, Lady Kaweah Cash, is by top barrel racing sire Judge Cash. Judge Cash, a former racehorse, is a son of American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Dash For Cash. That’s just one of many places Lady Kaweah Cash sports Hall of Fame bloodlines: She also traces on the bottom side of her pedigree to famed racehorse Easy Jet. “There was never a cow that could out-run Louie. He was never a runaway, but he always wanted to go,” says Bill Fischer, who operates Bill Fischer Performance Horses and trains for Tim and Kelly Bagnell, Louie’s breeders and original owners. The Bagnells sent Louie to Bill for training as a 2-year-old, who then showed the horse as a 3- and 4-year-old. The sensitive, levelheaded youngster gave his all every time he was under saddle. He had so much try that Bill sometimes worried the horse would hurt himself. “When you asked for something, he gave you all of it, sometimes too much,” says Bill. “I had to be careful that I didn’t overtrain on him.” In 2006, Bill and Louie won the Montana Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity limited open championship, as well as multiple Montana Reining Horse Association accolades. "I don’t believe that I ever showed him anywhere in the cow horse that he didn’t win a check,” Bill adds. “He was super athletic and trainable – you never had to ask more than once.” Louie could have continued a lucrative career in the show pen, but Bill could tell the horse’s heart wasn’t in the sport. And the Bagnells were looking for a barrel horse prospect for their daughter, 80
Lexi. But before he made it to Lexi, first Louie needed to learn how to be a barrel horse. Enter $2 million barrel racing champion Lisa Lockhart. The Bagnells had known Lisa for nearly 30 years and had already sent her multiple horses to train, including Fast An Gold, “Chisolm,” who helped advance Lisa’s career. When Lisa started riding Louie, the fact that he was so well trained as a reined cow horse made the process challenging. She had to learn new ways to communicate with him. “He’s an over-achiever. I’d wiggle the reins and he’d react. I had to learn new things to accommodate him,” she says. “He was so willing and wanting to please.” Lisa took training slow through Louie’s 5- and 6-year-old years, taking the gelding to local jackpots or hauling him alongside her first-string horses to get him seasoned. Louie was green and, like any young horse, had his ups and downs. “It didn’t go that well to start, but he had glimpses of brilliance, so I could see his potential,” she says. “Everyone always asks me if I could tell that he would be great. I had no idea what he would become.” Tim occasionally checked in with Lisa on Louie’s progress. The speedster was coming along, but Lisa was concerned he was a lot of horse for a young rider. He stayed at Lisa’s and started to demonstrate the raw talent he possessed. At the 2010 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association National Finals Rodeo, Louie had to step up to the plate. During a practice session, Chisolm fell and sustained a hematoma on the stifle and was out of commission. Before the first run, Lisa remembers thinking that Louie was nowhere near ready for this stage. He was nervous and danced around, which was out of character. “I had to ask my husband Grady to hold him because I couldn’t even get Louie to stand still while I put his leg boots on,” Lisa recalls. “I still remember thinking, ‘Dear Lord, let us make the pattern.’ ” They did more than run the pattern: They won the go-round. “It was absolutely amazing,” Lisa recounts. “The Bagnells came to the buckle ceremony and I gave them the buckle – he was still their horse. Grady thought I was crazy, but it made me determined to go win another.” Lexi’s buckskin barrel horse was proving he had what it took to compete on the big stage. Lisa knew that one day she would get the call that the Bagnells would be taking Louie home. Instead, the call Lisa got in the spring of 2011 surprised her. “Lexi told me that she felt Louie and I were a great team, that I needed to keep him and could buy him,” Lisa says. “I always knew in the back of my mind that I couldn’t get close to him, but I couldn’t help it. When she offered him to me, I couldn’t stop crying.” Since then, Lisa and Louie’s partnership has been one for the history books. The 15-year-old gelding has amassed more than $1.6 million and was named the Equi-Stat highest-earning horse of the decade. His countless accolades include being named the 2011 WNFR Horse With the Most Heart, the 2014 and 2015 RFD-TV’s The American $100,000 Champion and multiple Canadian Finals champion. “It's a special thing when a horse gets in the right hands like Louie with Lisa,” Bill says. “I knew he was good, but didn’t know he would turn out to be as great as he has.”

THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT POSTS SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR WILD HORSE AND BURRO MANAGEMENT IN 2020
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced several important accomplishments that support the agency’s mission of preserving wild horses and burros on public range lands in an ecologically sustainable way. During Fiscal Year 2020 – which ended Sept. 30, 2020
– the BLM humanely removed 10,139 wild horses and burros from overpopulated Herd Management Areas throughout the West. At the same time, the agency placed 6,162 animals into private care through adoptions and sales. The agency also secured contracts for seven new off-range
pastures to provide humane long-term care for up to 5,000 unadopted and unsold wild horses in a cost-efficient freeroaming environment. “Through decisive action and a creative approach, the BLM is showing successes in the management of Wild Horses and Burros,” said Casey

Hammond, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management. “The continued innovative use of incentives is saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars while reducing the overpopulation of wild horses and burros on the range.” The BLM continued to offer the Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) in Fiscal Year 2020, which is believed to have bolstered performance. The AIP, which was launched by the Trump Administration in 2019, offers qualified adopters $500 within 60 days of adoption and $500 within 60 days of receiving title. With more than 6,160 animals adopted and sold last year, taxpayers saved approximately $154 million that would have been spent on lifetime care for the animals. Despite the pandemic, through such outreach efforts as the Online Corral adoption/ sale platform and partnerships with organizations such as the Mustang Heritage Foundation, the agency took advantage of every safe opportunity to place animals into good homes. As states began to lift COVIDrelated restrictions, field offices safely resumed operations that allowed even more people to bring home their own wild horse or burro from satellite events around the country. As of March 1, 2020, the wild horse and burro population on public lands was estimated at more than 95,000, which is more than triple the number of animals the land can sustainably support in conjunction with other legally mandated uses, making targeted removals and successful adoptions and sales essential for enabling the agency to regain proper balance. Given the extensive overpopulation, wild horses and

burros routinely face starvation and death from lack of water. The high number of excess wild horses and burros causes habitat damage that forces animals to leave public lands and travel onto private property or even highways in search of food and water, creating increases in public safety concerns. Placement of wild horses and burros into private care is critical to the agency’s ability to effectively manage these valued resources as integral parts of America’s public lands. Under a 1971 law, the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, the agency is responsible for preserving and protecting these animals as part of a thriving natural ecological system on public lands. The agency achieves this objective primarily by gathering and removing excess animals from the range and offering them for adoption or purchase at facilities and events around the country. When the number of animals removed from the range exceeds the number the agency can place through adoption or sale, the remaining animals are held in off-range corrals or contracted pastures at taxpayer expense. Currently there are approximately 52,000 wild horses and burros in off-range corrals and pastures. The cost of providing quality, humane care for these animals runs about $57 million annually. United States and the Humane Society Legislative Fund objected to the Department of Interior’s plan in a letter sent to Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, urging the BLM to instead focus the agency’s limited resources on employing already available forms of proven, safe and humane fertility control tools to manage wild horse populations. The organizations do not support surgical sterilization of mares because there is no evidence that it can be performed in a safe and humane manner in the field. “This plan puts the lives of wild horses at risk, and the cost to taxpayers would be exorbitant. Field implementation will require gathering and holding mares for significant periods of time to conduct invasive surgical procedures on these wild animals and to ensure there are no post-operative complications,” said Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. “Safe, humane and less invasive fertility control tools that are cost-effective are already available, yet the BLM continually refuses to implement them correctly or at the scale needed.” The organizations emphasize that the BLM should not proceed with any population control projects based on surgical sterilization of mares without first conducting the research necessary to determine if these procedures can be conducted in a safe and humane manner in the field. For these reasons, the HSUS and HSLF strongly oppose the establishment of a non-reproducing herd component to the Confusion Herd Management Area in Utah by surgically sterilizing a proportion of the mares by ovariectomy via colpotomy.

Standlee Nutritional Experts Performance Horse Nutrition
Standlee Premium Western Forage Products are Best in Quality
The horse has evolved as a grazing animal and forage continues to play a pivotal role in equine health. Horses are non-ruminant herbivores, also known as “hindgut fermenters”. Their digestive tract is made up of a simple stomach, small intestine and large intestine. The natural feeding habit of the horse is to eat small amounts of roughages, often. Domestication brought a change to this. Modern horse management practices incorporate stabling, increased grain-based concentrate consumption, meal feeding and limited pasture access. These changes led to a myriad of problems by undermining the horses’ digestive capabilities. To ensure optimal health, horses must be given access to a high-quality fiber-based diet. Grain concentrates and supplements should only be fed to compliment the forage offered. If high-quality forage is fed, most horses only require a low intake of a vitamin and mineral pellet (ration balancer pellet). As horses increase their workload or physiological demands, e.g., pregnancy or lactation, additional concentrate may be required. Standlee Premium Western Forage® Timothy provides consistent nutrition to maintain optimal gastrointestinal function and support digestive health. In third-party testing, Standlee Premium Timothy Grass had higher nutrient content compared to a locally sourced grass hay (Perron, et al., 2019). Feeding Standlee Premium Western Forage products (bagged forage or bales) will boost the quality, consistency and nutrient profile of marginal quality forage. This will help satisfy horses’ nutrient requirements and decrease the amount of grain needed.
98
Horses require an absolute minimum of 1% of their body weight in dry forage per day; for a 1000lb horse, this equates to 10lb per day. A safer guideline is to provide horses with a minimum of 1.5 to 2% of their body weight in dry forage per day (this equates to 15 to 20lbs of dry forage per day for a 1000lb horse). Some classes of horses cannot tolerate diets high in sugars and starches, for example, senior horses. Standlee Alfalfa or Teff Grass is an excellent choice for senior horses who may require diets lower in sugars and starches. Standlee provides premium, high-quality forage, in several varieties, to satisfy the nutritional needs of all classes of horses. Standlee Forage is grown in the Western United States and is without equal, in quality and nutrient profiles. Research shows Standlee Alfalfa and Timothy Grass provided a more consistent and appropriate profile of key nutrients than comparable locally sourced hays (Perron, et al., 2019; Stewart, et al., 2017). There are several options available when adding high-quality western forages to your horse’s feed program. Bagged pellets, cubes or chopped forage products are easy to incorporate into your existing feeding program to improve the nutritional value of lesser quality hay. For instance, if you are currently feeding 1.5 to 2% of
your horse’s body weight in lesser quality hay, improve the quality by replacing a portion of the hay ration with Standlee Forage pellets or cubes (be sure to replace on a pound for pound basis). Benefits to bagged forage products include guaranteed consistency in quality and nutritional profile, less waste and easier storage and handling than larger bales. Standlee also provides consistent, high-quality compressed bales for those preferring long-stemmed forage. If you have questions, please contact the nutritionists at Standlee Premium Western Forage, or consult with your veterinarian.

LUKE POTTER WINS TIE-DOWN ROPING ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
There are plenty of reasons to raise a toast to Luke Potter on his 21st birthday, Nov. 18. The biggest could be that he finished the 2020 season atop the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for tiedown roping. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and it was a tough year for everyone so I was glad I pulled it off,” Potter said. Potter won the rookie title by a margin of nearly $10,000, ending the 2020 season with $34,301. He also faired well in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, finishing 23rd. “Throughout the whole year it was hit or miss for me
and nothing clicked until midAugust, and that’s when I won most of my money,” Potter said. “I didn’t really think I would win it until the last week of the rodeo season.” Potter had a hot streak from Aug. 29 through Sept. 6 that gave him a $9,386 boost in the race for the rookie title. He added an additional $2,932 next to his name a little more than a week later by placing second at the West Texas Fair & Rodeo in Abilene, Sept. 19.
