My dear friend,

Charlie Brooks passed...

On Saturday Sept 28th my dear friend, Charlie Brooks passed away. Charlie was a kind, gentle, caring, and generous man to all he encountered. He was a huge part of our team at the Almosta Ranch. Daily he was riding Texas helping with cattle, turning back, or encouraging someone with his amazing wisdom or humor. I often called him CB and he called me AD! He took hundreds of photos of horses and riders with his keen eye for things special. Charlie attended our cuttings, clinics, and all ranch events with a smile and his camera. Charlie recently traveled to Egypt with his wife Nancy. He studied for two years to understand hieroglyphics and the history of the land. When they returned they invited us all to view his incredible photos and hear about their trip. Charlie adored his wife Nancy and his family. He loved riding and being a cowboy! He was the epitome of a great gentleman with the constant thought of others. Charlie will be missed but remembered every day I ride into the cutting pen or look at his beautiful photos. His footprints, his memory, and spirit will remain forever with us! Please pray for Nancy and his family! Al Dunning 4

Guest Column: By Taryl O’Shea, Executive Director Arabian Horse Association of Arizona

Questions 1, 2 and 3 Are Essential to

Scottsdale Hosting Top Equestrian and Tourism-Driving Events Scottsdale is the only U.S. city in the running to host the International Federation for Equestrian Sports World Championships in 2022. That is not by accident. Scottsdale has a world-class equestrian community. We have premier events such as the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, Arizona Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Show and many others. They are a proud reminder of Scottsdale’s heritage. We also have a top venue for equestrian, community and special events at WestWorld of Scottsdale. WestWorld is competing with the venues in Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates and other countries to host the Equestrian World Championships. WestWorld is an important tourism and economic development driver for Scottsdale. A new report by Arizona State University found WestWorld brought approximately 916,694 visitors to Scottsdale last year and generated 1,884 jobs and $111.7 million for Arizona’s economy. But we cannot rest on our laurels. WestWorld needs repairs, improvements and upgrades in order to keep hosting great equestrian, community and tourism driving events such as Barrett-Jackson, our event and so many others. Questions 1, 2 and 3 on the November 5th ballot make needed infrastructure repairs and investments in all parts of Scottsdale including at WestWorld, which is at the geographic heart of our city. In many ways it is our spiritual heart too, reminding us that in some ways we can and should still be the ‘West’s Most Western Town’. Under the plan, WestWorld’s horse barns will be repaired and renovated. Some of them are now falling down. The infrastructure investments will also upgrade the venue’s audio and lighting systems and improve street access. WestWorld’s arena will be expanded so it can host more events. Plenty of other cities would love to have the equestrian and special events Scottsdale hosts. Those cities are ready to pick

10

up Scottsdale’s equestrian top-tier mantle if we drop the ball. WestWorld hosts more than Barrett-Jackson’s world-famous auto auction and prominent equestrian events. The venue, which is located on federal land and is managed by the city of Scottsdale, also hosts youth sports and community events and is booked most days of the year. The Scottsdale investments before voters will also build 13 new youth sports fields near WestWorld. Those will help ease the lengthy waiting lists and backlog for space youth sports team and leagues face trying to book fields in Scottsdale throughout the city. The new multi-use fields can also be rented for parking during special events such as the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Barrett-Jackson. Scottsdale voters authorized a similar plan decades ago at what is now called the Scottsdale Sports Complex. There, most every day residents can see youth sports on display. But the backlog in our city is now such that we need a lot more, new fields. Scottsdale voters also have the chance to invest in 58 projects throughout the city that will help our quality of life, future prosperity and economic competitiveness. Many of the projects in the $319 million program will never get done at all unless voters approve Questions 1, 2 and 3 in November. The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Pinnacle Peak Park and McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park will get needed improvements. Old Town Scottsdale will become more pedestrian friendly, get public parking and repairs will be completed at Civic Center Plaza so it can host cultural, culinary and community events. Parts of Civic Plaza have been closed with the emergency bridge repairs that closed Drinkwater Boulevard. Scottsdale is already a wonderful place for equestrian and other special events. We just need to keep it that why by voting Yes on Questions 1, 2 and 3. Taryl O’Shea is Executive Director of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona.

OCTOBER 2019

Scottsdale is already a wonderful place for equestrian and other special events. We just need to keep it that way by voting Yes on Questions 1, 2 and 3.

- Taryl O’Shea, Executive Director, Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show

WestWorld attracts equestrian enthusiasts all over the state and the country. But it won’t stay that way without needed upgrades.

” - Doug Huls, CEO, Arizona Quarter House Association

One of the reasons Scottsdale has a proud equestrian heritage is because it is home to a signature equestrian venue, WestWorld. This important facility has served the equestrian community well, hosting events such as the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the Arizona Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Show and many others. But WestWorld is starting to show its age. It needs updating. It needs to upgrade horse barns that are falling apart. It needs better and more efficient lighting at the main arena. It needs a new public address system, and improvements to the parking lot. Roadway improvements are needed as well to improve traffic flow.

Questions 1, 2 and 3 have all been endorsed by the Mayor and the entire Scottsdale City Council. It’s why this bond package is also supported by the Executive Director of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and the CEO of the Arizona Quarter Horse Association. Help them and help Scottsdale protect its equestrian heritage.

Bowie, Arizona - Rambo’s ‘hometown’ - celebrate ‘Rambo Day’

Quick trivia question: Where is John Rambo, the one-man vigilante army from “First Blood” and its sequels, from? The answer: Bowie, as in Bowie, Arizona, about three hours southeast of Phoenix, with a population of 653. (Rambo left town, after all, decreasing the population by at least one.) And to Bowie, that distinction is more than the answer to a trivia question. So much so, in fact, that the town has proclaimed Sept. 18, as “Rambo Day.”

To put it another way, “As we work to increase Bowie’s economic footprint, this national exposure as John Rambo’s hometown is priceless to us,” Nancy-Jean Welker, the president of the Bowie Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful for and proud of this distinction!” The fourth movie in the franchise, “Rambo: Last Blood,” opened Friday, Sept. 20. Sylvester Stallone once again plays Rambo, and once again cowrote the script. According to Lionsgate, the studio producing the film, Rambo calls Bowie “home” in the new film. “Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission,” reads the studio description. Which, when you think about it, except for the “final mission” part, could describe all the other “Rambo” movies, too. Let’s face it, you don’t go to a “Rambo” movie for plot surprises. You go to see Rambo waste bad guys. The official Rambo Day Proclamation recognizes Rambo as “one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in cinema history,” and goes on to say that he “has long fought against the injustices and cruelty throughout the world, defending the powerless and standing up for his ideals, his country, his brothers-in-arms, and now HIS FAMILY.” The proclamation continues: “The message carried by Rambo is a timely and cautionary one, showcasing the true cost of battle, the dilemmas faces by those who seek vengeance, and the virtue of protecting the downtrodden.” Bowie isn’t the only place taking part in a Rambo Day, by the way. According to a release from Lionsgate, the studio producing “Rambo: Last Blood,” Los Angeles is also proclaiming Wednesday as Rambo Day, and there are other contests and promotions. 22

Texas teen electrocuted and killed trying to save his horse

Flooding in Texas caused by Tropical Storm Imelda has trapped 1,000s and led to the death of a 19-year-old trying to save his horse.

According to a GoFundMe account launched for Hunter Morrison, the teen was trying to get his horse to safety when he was electrocuted and drowned. The page launched by a family friend states Morrison was electrocuted due to a lightning strike. At just 19, Morrison reportedly did not have life insurance and the fund seeks to help cover the funeral cost for his family.

Horses Steal the Show when Medieval Times Opens in Scottsdale Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament has opened it’s doors to the Valley of the Sun! The castle is located at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s Talking Stick Entertainment District. Celebrating a birthday, organizing a company outing, or simply looking for the newest entertainment experience? Jousting, weaponry, horsemanship, falconry and a grand feast are all part of the electrifying show at the 80,000 square foot castle.

“The Arizona castle is our first in ten years. It’s been amazing to see everything come together,” said Drew Barnes, marketing and sales manager for the castle. “From three months of knight training, to transporting all 27 of our horses from our ranch in Texas, we’re excited to finally hear nightly cheers in the grand arena.” The Medieval Times experience begins as soon as you cross the draw bridge,” continues Barnes. “While the tournament takes place in the grand arena, the grand hall is host to more fun. Worthy guests can become knighted by one of the Queen’s Knights, while the history of medieval torture devices is revealed in the castle’s dungeon.” Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament was founded in 1977 in Spain. Based upon authentic Medieval history, it is the true story of a noble family. Documentation dates back to the 11th Century. More than 69 million guests have enjoyed over 96,000 shows, since the first North American Castle opened in Florida in 1983. Experience electrifying performances during the show! Heroic knights on spirited horses display astounding athletic feats. A hallmark of this unique entertainment experience is also the thrilling swordplay. Tickets include a four-course meal and a two-hour jousting tournament. There you will see six courageous knights, real weapons, beautiful horses and a live flight of the royal falcon. Dinner includes two rounds of select beverages and coffee, garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes and the dessert of the castle. Don’t worry if you are vegetarian. There are options available for you as well. The castle can also accommodate food allergies and dietary restrictions. Arizona’s longest bar is the first thing you see after checking in, nestled far beneath the towering castle ceiling. The Queen’s Royal Gift Shop is on one side of the hall. You will find a range of wooden swords, dragon statuettes, knight and princess costumes, among much more. The Queen’s throne sits empty on the other side until after the tournament. Afterwards, guests have the opportunity to meet her highness in person. While the Queen may rule over the tournament, it’s the horses that steal the show. Medieval Times is the largest breeder of Andalusian horses in North America and is dedicated to the preservation of the white steeds, raising them from birth on a 230-acre ranch in Sanger, Texas. The first three years of their lives are spent on the ranch getting accustomed to human interaction and receiving basic training. Each castle features 20-30 horses who receive 24-hour care and are fed the highest quality alfalfa. They receive advanced training, in which a strong bond is formed between the horses and qualified riders. Each horse also is trained in the art of classical dressage. When a horse is ready to retire, they live out their days in the serene environment of the Texas ranch. Children (12 and younger) are $35.95 and adults are $45.95. Medieval Times is located at 9051 East Via De Ventura in Scottsdale. Visit medievaltimes.com or call 1-888-WE-JOUST (935-6878) for more information or to reserve tickets. 34

33rd Annual IGRA World Gay Rodeo Finals Oct 24 - 27 at WestWorld

The World Gay Rodeo Finals (TM) is an exciting, action packed rodeo; but it’s also serious business for the men and women in the arena, behind the chutes and in competition.

It is a surprise to many that the gay members of the community are involved in rodeo for over 30 years as a sanctioned sport. The International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) has officially been ropin’ and ridin’ since 1985 and currently has over 5,000 members in 25 local associations nationwide and in Canada. We are the largest non profit 501(c)(3) organization in the world coordinating rodeo events specifically welcoming lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender as well as heterosexual participants and spectators. IGRA is a safe place where all genders and orientations are celebrated and welcome. At the end of the IGRA rodeo year, the top 20 men, women and teams in each event will receive invitations to compete at the World Gay Rodeo Finals (TM), presented by IGRA. It’s truly a showcase for the excitement and the mastery of the sport of rodeo, with some of the hardest-working contestants showing their skills and getting both their own and the audience’s adrenaline running. Let’s Rodeo! Please visit igra.com/finals, official World Gay Rodeo Finals website, for additional information. Learn more about Royalty competitions, a raffle for free room stay at the host hotel, purchase event tickets in advance at a discount available only online prior to the rodeo, silent auction, arts and crafts show, and more! Events start on October 24-27, 2019, at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

Western Dressage

Association of America

Final preparations are underway for the WDAA World Championship Show and our newsletter is crammed with information for you about the show. We, at WDAA are very excited to bring you the best show experience yet. We take your suggestions very seriously and do our best to make it better every year. I am thrilled to say we are offering every test at every level this year and expanding the show to five full days! I can’t wait to see you all with your beautiful horses and hear about your adventures with Western Dressage.

I have been traveling all across the country this year judging Western Dressage and going to shows and I have seen many of you in the show ring. I have never been more proud than I am of all of you. When I see you at shows, I see how kind you are to your horses and to one another. I have seen you help each other and cheer for each other. I have seen you welcome strangers to our sport. You compete against each other, but strive to win on your own merit instead of on a competitor’s mistake. This attitude is very rare in the competitive world of showing horses. I am proud that we are a group who puts our horses’ welfare’s above all else. There is no group of people I would rather be associated with. YOU are the BEST! Good Luck to all of you who will be competing at the WDAA World Championship Show. I wish for each of you, your personal best performances. Remember to have fun and ride for the joy of it. “Bullets cannot kill me!” —Geronimo

56

OCTOBER 2019

Geronimo Bulletproof? Artist E.A. Burbank, who was a guest in Geronimo’s home and painted his portrait numerous times in the late 1890s. In one of these sessions, he reported that Geronimo bared himself to the waist. The artist recounted, “ I was dumbfounded to see the number of bullet holes in his body. I knew he had been in many battles and had been fired on dozens of times, but I had never heard of anyone living with at least fifty bullet wounds on his body.” Burbank went on to say, “some of the bullet holes were large enough to hold small pebbles that Geronimo picked up and placed in them. Putting a pebble in a bullet wound he would make a noise like a gun, then take the pebble out and throw it on the ground.”

Unarmed and Still Dangerous? In May of 1904 the prisoner of war, Geronimo, is invited to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition being held in St. Louis. He’s offered a dollar a day, but settles on $100 a month. He stays at the fair for six months. Geronimo is accompanied everywhere by two armed soldiers, who stand on either side of him. The effect creates the aura that the warrior is still dangerous, even though he is close to 76 years old.

The Father of Indian Country Today, 110 years after his passing, Geronimo has become the most famous Indian in the world. He has become, like George Washington, the Father of the Indian Nations, only in this version he not only cut down the cherry tree with an axe, but he vanquished everyone in his path with that axe, and never lied about any of it. The Freedom Fighter who fought until the end. In the legend he never surrendered.

Over 25 years in the making, Bob Boze Bell’s latest book, “The Illustrated Life & Times of Geronimo” combines hundreds of never-before-seen images (original paintings and photographs), newly uncovered facts (Geronimo had a dozen wives!) and a blow-by-blow account of how he became the most famous Indian in the world. Told in his distinctive time-line style, you will get a bold and insightful look at one of the most controversial historical characters in the history of the Wild West. On sale, November 15.

NRHA Medications update on the use Cannabinoids (CBD) With “Respect the horse. Respect the sport.” being a foundational piece of NRHA’s mission, the National Reining Horse Association tasks itself with monitoring trends in competition, as well as new products presented to owners and riders. From time to time, new products appear on the equine supplement market claiming to enhance a horse’s

58

OCTOBER 2019

performance. Over the last several years, cannabinoids have gained increased attention and have become nearly mainstream. In 2018 Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act, also known as the “Farm Bill.” The passage of this bill has created some potential confusion with respect to the use of “hemp” and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in competing horses. The bill defines “hemp” as both the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any derivatives of cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. With the enactment of this bill, “hemp” is no longer considered a controlled substance under federal law, but THC remains a Schedule I drug with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). NRHA Animal Welfare and Medications Rules prohibit cannabidiols (CBD) and their metabolites. While hemp does not contain more than 0.3% THC, it does contain CBD. CBD, both natural and synthetic forms, are likely to affect the performance of a horse due to its reported anxiolytic effects. This substance is no different than legitimate therapeutics that effect mentation and behavior in horses. Horses competing at NRHA events and under NRHA rules who test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, and other cannabimimetics will be considered in violation of the rules. It is important to note that analytical methods are being implemented to detect CBD and similar cannabinoids. Caution is important when using these products as their composition widely varies and may not be representative of their label claims as there is no regulatory oversight from the FDA, nor guarantee of their safety in horses. If you have questions on NRHA Animal Welfare and Medications Rules regarding medications, dosages, withdrawal times, etc., please contact the hotline at 1-800733-2472.

PRCA WORLD CHAMPION WADE SUNDELL OUT OF HOSPITAL BY TRACY RENCK

Reigning PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Champion Wade Sundell was released from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif., Sept. 20.

Sundell was injured Aug. 24 while competing at the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Sundell was aboard The Cervi Brothers’ Living The High Life when the horse reared up in the chute and smashed Sundell in the chest. The impact lacerated Sundell’s liver, according to Rick Foster of the Justin Sportsmedicine team. Sundell was taken to the hospital and had surgery that evening. On Sept. 23, a spokesman for the Justin Sportsmedicine team told ProRodeo.com that Sundell is staying at the legendary Cow

Camp in Rancho Mission Viejo, a ranch that traces its roots about 140 years. The Justin Sportsmedicine spokesman said Sundell has been walking and is trying to regain weight after his lengthy stay in the hospital. Sundell is headed in the right direction for a full recovery, but the process is slow. There are upcoming fundraisers for Sundell's medical expenses, including proceeds from Rodeo Elevate School in Vinita, Okla., Nov. 8-10, going to help Sundell. For information about the Rodeo Elevate School, email info@ bigrafterrodeo.com. Sundell, 34, won his first world title last year after finishing the season with $280,636. He earned $177,327 at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. This season, the Iowa cowboy has been battling to secure a spot in the Top 15 PRCA | RAM World Standings. Following splitting the win at the Range Days Rodeo Xtreme Broncs Finale in Rapid City, S.D., Aug. 22, Sundell had climbed to 12th in the world standings with $83,329. In the Sept. 23 world standings, Sundell was 17th. The regular season ends Sept. 30. Sundell is an eight-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR – 2009-15 and 2018.

Equine West Nile News By Kate L. Hepworth-Warren, DVM, DACVIM West Nile virus became a major equine health concern after it was first identified in the United States in 1999, infecting at least 1,000 horses every year through 2006. Since then, the development of effective vaccines has decreased the number of cases significantly. In 2011, only 87 cases were recorded by the USDA.1 However, the number of cases reported since then has rebounded, fluctuating between 141 and 627 annually. In 2018, nearly 500 cases were reported, which is the highest number since 2012. 60

Cornell veterinarians help horse return to ring after Kissing Spine When Wrangler, an 11-year-old quarter horse gelding, bolted at a horse show in 2018, owner Anjanette Nicolazzo knew something was amiss. “I was baffled,” Nicolazzo said. “I had ridden him for eight months prior to this, and he had never done anything of the sort. I knew his bolting was a cry for help because it was so out of character for him.” In fact, this smart, show-winning horse had been hiding a painful condition known as “kissing spine” – a condition in which the vertebrae touch or grind against each other. Eventually, a trip to Cornell University Hospital for Animals' equine hospital led to a diagnosis, and relief for horse and rider. Prior to the show, Wrangler showed other signs of discomfort – acting sensitive around his girth and flank area, pawing holes in his stall floor

and refusing to back up. Nicolazzo initially suspected stomach ulcers but wanted to find out for sure. Her local veterinarian in Springville, New York, referred her to the Cornell animal hospital for an evaluation and a gastroscopy – an evaluation of the stomach with a flexible camera. Wrangler was first evaluated by the Large Animal Internal Medicine specialty service, but when the stomach scope did not show any evidence of ulcers, Cornell clinicians took a team-based approach to helping find a cause for Wrangler’s discomfort. Dr. Elaine Claffey, a surgeon with Cornell’s Equine Hospital, and Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists in Elmont, New York, saw Wrangler for an orthopedic exam to look for any lameness or pain associated with his muscles or bones. “These cases of behavioral problems or poor performance can be tricky to sort out,” Claffey said. “Fortunately at Cornell we have the strength of multiple different specialty disciplines, so we can work together to solve the problem from many different angles.” Wrangler wasn’t lame but had back pain when he was evaluated by Claffey. Cornell’s Diagnostic Imaging service was called on to acquire high-definition X-rays At Horseshoe Park of Wrangler’s back vertebrae. & Equestrian The X-rays revealed that 11 of Centre Wrangler’s vertebrae suffered 20464 East Riggs Road, from kissing spine; four were so Queen Creek, Az severe, they had fused together. It was one of the worst cases Claffey had ever seen. Nicolazzo began giving Wrangler back injections to alleviate his pain, but after a week, Nicolazzo knew surgery was the answer. Beezie Madden & Darry Lou Win $1 Million at Grand Prix

In a stunning performance, Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) rode Abigail Wexner’s Darry Lou, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood stallion, to win the largest prize money show jumping class in the world, the $3 Million CP ‘International’ Grand Prix, presented by Rolex, on September 8 at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Madden and Darry Lou were clear in round one to land in the

top 12 to return for the second round. They were the only pair to jump clear in the second round and tallied just one time fault to win outright without a jump-off. “It was a very difficult second round, the last line in particular,” said Madden of the grand prix, which featured two double combinations in the last line of the second round. “You have a huge atmosphere here, and it is always difficult jumping and very good

competition. I find it inspiring and I get much more excited here than something where there is no crowd. The sponsors, the fans, and everything make it special. I thought it made for an amazing event today.” Paired together just over two years, Madden and Darry Lou had four faults in the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen in July in a top 10 finish. On Friday at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament, they won the Tourmaline Oil Cup 1.60m, setting themselves up well for Sunday’s huge victory. “He felt just spot on today, so that was really nice,” said Madden of the charming chestnut stallion. “A lot can happen in this class; both rounds were very difficult. You always hope you can do well, but it’s hard jumping here. He’s nothing but a pleasure to ride. If anything goes wrong, it’s my fault. He has a beautiful gallop and jump. His temperament is amazing; he’s careful and scopey." “Winning this class means a lot with any horse, but this year he’s had an incredible record and to cap it off with this win is fantastic,” concluded Madden. The CP ‘International’ Grand Prix, presented by Rolex has been one of the biggest show jumping events in the world since 1976 and boasts a winner’s list of the sport’s legends, including Madden, who won this prestigious class in 2005 on Judgement. There were $3 million (Canadian dollars) on hand for the grand prix, of which Madden takes home $1 million as the winner. She is also now in the running for the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, which offers a 1 million Euro bonus for the rider who can win three grand prix events in a row of the participating events at Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’, CHI Geneva, The Dutch Masters, and CHIO Aachen. Madden is the first female to be a “live contender” for the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping and followed fellow American contender Kent Farrington, who won the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen with Gazelle.

Rare Zebra Foal With Polka Dots Spotted In Kenya A newborn zebra foal with bizarre polka-dot markings has recently been photographed in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This is the first time that this unusual pattern has ever been seen amongst zebras in the Maasai Mara.

Fencing Arizona for Over 50 Years!

This rare black zebra foal was first spotted and photographed early one fine September morning near the Mara River by Antony Tira, a respected Maasai tour guide and photographer at the Matira Bush Camp in the Reserve. “At first, I thought it was a zebra that had been captured and painted or marked for purposes of [researching] migration,” Mr. Tira told the Daily Nation, a Kenyan newspaper. “I was confused when I first saw it.”

After carefully studying the foal, Mr. Tira realized he was looking at a newborn zebra with a pigment disorder. This rare zebra foal was given the name, “Tira”. “The name ‘Tira’ was coined by the local Maasai guide who first found him on Sep 13,” Mr. Liu explained in email. “There is a general rule within the park; whoever finds an animal of

By Dan Ross In California, a proposed new rule would, if passed, prohibit horses at California Horse Racing Board (CHRB)-regulated facilities from racing or working within 30 days of being treated with extracorporeal shockwave therapy. At the moment in California, horses are unable to race or work for 10 days after a shockwave therapy. Should the rule go into effect, it would be by far the toughest of its kind throughout the

Shockwave Therapy: New Research Suggests Possible Link to Catastrophic Injury country. At the same time, the proposed rule change reignites the debate on one of the more controversial veterinary technologies in modern veterinary medicine, raising hard questions about the suitability of such machines on U.S. racetracks and training centers at a time of laser-focused scrutiny on animal

welfare. On the one hand are those who see therapeutic value to shockwave therapy as long it’s used with an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. On the flip side are those who see the machine’s analgesic effects as reason enough to fundamentally restrict its use. Furthering our understanding of

shockwave therapy can only bring clarity to this dialogue. We know, for example, that the analgesic effect that comes with a treatment wears off after about three days. But do we know exactly how and why shockwave therapy appears beneficial in the treatment of certain injuries? Not quite. What’s more, there had been little to no empirical data to determine whether shockwave treatments are associated with a higher risk of catastrophic injury in racehorses, as some fear. A recent study that Tim Parkin, a University of Glasgow professor of veterinary epidemiology, conducted for racing officials seeking to learn more about the practice offers important insights into just that, however. Working with these officials and using the Equine Injury Database (EID), Parkin looked at horses that had been reported on the vet’s list for shockwave treatment, then counted the number of days and races since the treatment before that horse was fatally injured. Parkin found it”statistically significant” that horses that received shockwave therapy in the last 90 days, 180 days, and ever were between 54% and 79% more likely to suffer a fatal injury than horses that had never received such treatments.

For horses that received shockwave therapy in the last 30 and 60 days, the risk of fatal injury was also elevated: 26% and 65%, percent respectively, but these numbers (due to small numbers of horses treated so close to a race day) were not statistically significant. The confidential study–conducted for research purposes and not published in any peer-reviewed journal–isn’t definitive proof that shockwave therapy is a single factor predisposing horses to a greater likelihood of fatal injury. For example, the locations of the shockwave treatments weren’t identified in the data–an important point if causal links are to be made between treatments and the site of the fatal injury (more on this later in the story).

Fort Worth lands major horse competition for 2020

One of the most prestigious events in the equine industry, the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™, has selected Fort Worth as a qualifier location for the North American League’s 2020-2021 season. The inaugural Fort Worth, Texas, International — a newcomer to the League — will be held Dec. 15-20, 2020, at the 5,800-seat Will Rogers Coliseum. It will be the first FEI Qualifier held in Texas and one of only eight qualifiers held in North America. The event will draw many of the top show jumping competitors and have an international live broadcast signal to increase exposure of the sport in North America. The World Cup Qualifier is also on the books for two additional years in Fort Worth. “This is a huge win for Will Rogers Memorial Center,” said David Reeves, director of sales for the Will Rogers Memorial Complex. “All of our partners deserve a huge pat on the back for our success in the equestrian event business, as we would never have landed an event of this caliber without everyone’s cooperation and hard work and the support of our community. This is great news and exposure for Fort Worth and Texas.”

The Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League is now in its fifth year.

Legacy of the West Gala to Benefit Freedom Foundation Rodeo Fame’s Second Annual Legacy of the West Gala will once again bring together living legends from the PRCA, WPRA, WCRA, PBR, and BFO, as well as many other western artists and influencers, to raise awareness and funds to stop human sex trafficking. Honorary Co-Chairs Ty and Paige Murray head an all-star company of notable leaders, from every major western and rodeo organization, as we come together to raise awareness and bring an end to human trafficking.

“We have a daughter and can’t imagine other little girls going through this. It just breaks our hearts, but the western world has a bigger heart and we can help.” - Paige Murray, wife of King of the Cowboys, Ty Murray, both honorary chairs of the Legacy of the West Gala. This year’s Gala proceeds are to benefit the Bucking Horse Breeders Association (BHBA) Freedom Foundation. Originally co-founded by partners Steve Stone (bassist for the Casey Donahew Band) and Kenny Andrews, the BHBA realized how blessed we are to live the western lifestyle that we do, and wanted to do more, leading to the creation of the Freedom Foundation; a ministry-based, non-profit organization that buys women and children out of sexual slavery in third world countries, then provides them with the assistance and training they need to become self-supporting and return to normal society. This year’s financial contributions from the gala have been earmarked to build new safe houses for freed women in Belize. “I know it seems like a stretch - cowboys and cowgirls fighting the trafficking of girls, but not really. What we in the Western world embrace is independence and freedom. These are things these young girls have never experienced. In the US, we don’t even know that exists while in Belize, for instance, it’s not even hidden. It’s a dark battle we have to fight,” said Steve Stone. ”WHAT: 2ND ANNUAL LEGACY OF THE WEST GALA WHEN: Dec12, 2019 (2 – 4 p.m.) WHERE: Renaissance Las Vegas WHY: To raise awareness and funding to directly help victims of human trafficking WHO: You!

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken How Is Your Air Filter Holding Up?

Air filters are the first line of defense to keeping your engine free of dirt and debris. With our dusty Arizona climate, driving through monsoon storms or off road they can get packed full of dirt faster than you may think. The fix is easy, throw away the old filter and install a new one, or clean it if you are running a cleanable filter. It seems easy but there’s more to air filters than that. Here’s some things to consider.

88

OCTOBER 2019

Nate Brekken

Like most things in life not all air filters are created equal and cheaper isn’t always better. If you replace it yourself you can pick one up from the dealership, choose from one of many aftermarket brands at your auto parts store, or at here at Strictly Diesel. The lower priced filters tend to have several design flaws so be cautious when using them. There are three common issues we see weekly if not daily. The first is the filter material used as they may not filter as well as the OEM filter letting very find debris pass through it. The second is size and shape, a lot of the aftermarket filters don’t properly fit in the box which allows dirt/debris to bypass the continued on page 90

filter and enter the engine. The third issue is not keeping their shape and deforming which is more common to see with a flat or rectangular shaped filter. A quality filter will be reinforced to prevent it from folding in due to restriction or water damage. They also use strips of glue across the filter pleats to keep them separated. Once the filter pleats fold over it quickly loses surface area for air to

90

OCTOBER 2019

flow through creating even more restriction. There are several reasons why air filter maintenance and choosing the right filter so important. Dirty or restricted filters can quickly cause a loss of power, decreased fuel economy, higher exhaust temperatures when towing and increased smoke output. Severely restricted filters can cause the rotating section of the turbo to be pulled towards one side of the turbo which can lead to early bearing failure. As dust goes through your air filter a few things can happen. Most trucks have a mass air flow sensor which is located after the air filter, as dust collects on the sensor it affects its ability to properly read airflow and can cause a few different drivability symptoms. After it passes the MAF sensor it will contact the compressor wheel of the turbo spinning extremely fast causing a sand blasting affect. It will wear away the outer edges of the fins over time which translates into lower than normal boost levels (lower power, higher EGT’s, decreased efficiency). Now that the dust has made its way through the turbo it will enter the cylinders of your engine. All those dust particles will slowly wear away at piston rings and cylinder walls causing a compression loss. Once this happens there’s no bringing it back and you could be in store for a costly engine repair. It sounds extreme but we see this more often than you would believe. Now that you may be concerned about the air filter in your truck take a few minutes and look it over. Make sure the filter box properly seals, doesn’t have any broken latches/tabs or missing any hardware. Don’t rely on the spring-loaded filter minders as they can be very inaccurate. With the filter removed lightly tap it on the ground. Even if it doesn’t look dirty, you’ll be surprised how much dirt falls out. If you question the condition of the filter play it safe and install a new filter. It’s cheap insurance to protect expensive components. AzQHA Awards Scholarships at the Arizona Fall Championship

Erica Severenson

The Arizona Quarter Horse Association awarded over $18,000 in scholarship funds during the AZ Fall Championship Show this September. It was the third year that the organization held their innovative ASCENT scholarship competitions on the last day of the prestigious show.

The programs are designed to encourage youth membership and reward excellence. In order to qualify for these scholarship awards, youth must be AzQHYA members and show at two of the three AzQHA No Bling Shows. Scholarship funds earned by exhibitors are kept in a restricted account by AzQHA until the student graduates from high school. Then, the funds are paid

Anthony Luna directly to the college, trade school or university that student attends. The Interscholastic Scholarship Show offered 5 classes in Horsemanship and 3 in Reining. Riders compete on horses they have never ridden before and they are not given any time prior to the class to get to know their mount. It is a true test of horsemanship to be able to quickly figure out a horse and present it to the best of their abilities. Patrick Flaherty judged the competition. Dr Joni Hegel, a long time AzQHA member and exhibitor, sponsors the Scholarship Show. She was on hand Sunday to present awards. “This is what it is all about,” commented Hegel enthusiastically. “This is the future of our industry. I watch these kids working so hard and there is no question I will continue to support this program.” In total, $8,400 was awarded to the youth riders with the winner of each class receiving $500, while second and third place banked $300 and $200 respectively.

Scholarship recipients in the Horsemanship Division were:

Future Beginner: Annabelle Hagen $500 Future Novice: Gavin Marx $500, Tyson Gillette $300 JV Beginner: Erica Severson $500, Ginia McFarland $300 JV Novice: Lauren Blumer $500, Bianca Juralvea $300 Future Intermediate: McKenna Bein $500, Kennedy Buchanan $300, Aubree Leyva $200 continued on page 94 92

In addition to the Scholarship Show, AzQHA awarded $10,000 in scholarship funds through an interview process. The middle and high school students were asked a variety of questions about their current equine pursuits and their future ambitions. The panel of three judges included Cindy Bowen, Joan Holsten, Nicole Herr. They interviewed 30 youth throughout the day and were then tasked with selecting 10 of these exceptional students for awards of $1,000 each.

Brazos Bash Results

Beau Galyean and Warlock By Lauren Middleton

starting with the Classic Limited Open. It was a new concept for the Brazos Bash to have the Limited Divisions held separately from the regular Open go-rounds and was met with great response. These young trainers were given an excellent opportunity to show some pretty nice horse, as the go-rounds were not drawn until the conclusion of the regular open go’s. There were several high-

profile horses able to be shown aside from the horses they already had in their programs. The whole thing just gave these riders more experience and a chance to grow.
Rodrigo Taboga had an amazing day in these classes starting with a win in the Classic Open riding Desiresomemetallic (Metallic Cat x Desire Some Freckles), owned by the Atwood Quarter Horses, marking a 222

The Brazos Bash is always known for big scores and epic runs from year to year.

to take home the $4,000 check. Rodrigo, originally from Brazil, came to the US to gain more experience in the cutting pen. He has undoubtedly done that having a great deal of success with arguably one of the best programs in the industry. Beau Galyean is a name we hear time and time again in finals. Beau has allowed Rodrigo a ton of opportunity, but he has also given back results with the opportunity! It has been a cool thing to watch unfold throughout the year.

The Derby Open was next to go with John Mitchell laying it all on the line riding Hot Lookin Cat (Hottish x Fancy Lookin Cat), owned by The Slate River Ranch. They marked a 223 early out in the first set impressing the judges so much that they held on to the lead through the two sets of finals! John is never one to worry about when it comes to being on edge and going for the win. This instance was no different, and his horse was up for the challenge. He consistently brings excellent horses to the shows from Slate River’s impressive program also getting them consistently to the finals. He is one of the most fun to watch through a run with each piece thoroughly thought out in the chaos. This seems like a funny thing to say, but if you watch him talk to all of his help, control his horses, and pick his cattle, you will get it! This win added another $20,000 to his earnings after an already stellar year. Reserve Champion was Beau Galyean aboard Warlock (Metallic Cat x Sweet Abra), owned by the Fults Ranch, marking a 222 to claim the $18,000 check! We are happy to see this gelding back in the show pen after being off since the NCHA Futurity. He was an Open Futurity finalist and is now making a big comeback statement! He is yet another fantastic baby out of the great resident mare of the Fults Ranch. Classic Limited Open
