Cade McCutcheon & Super M Ten days of intense, world-class competition culminated Saturday, Dec. 7, with the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Open Finals. The NRHA Futurity, held at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, featured top horses and riders from across the globe. When the curtain fell as the final horse left the arena, it was 19-year-old Cade McCutcheon who emerged victorious, not only winning the Level 4 Championship but also tying for the Reserve title.
6
McCutcheon had three shots at finishing in the top spot of the Level 4: Deja Vu With A Gun, Super Marioo, and Guns And Dynamite. He competed first on Deja Vu With A Gun (owned by David Silva), marking a 212.5.
Next up was Super Marioo, and the pair scored a 224.5. “I ran in and hit my first stop. I got turned big, and before I loped off, I thought to myself, ‘Just make sure you lope off on the correct lead. Don’t screw it up,’” he recalled. “That horse was there for me the whole way. There are a couple things that could have been better, but overall, what can I say?”
It’s been a banner year for Cade McCutcheon, who turned in his non pro card in January to become an NRHA Professional. Prior to the NRHA Futurity, he had won more than $706,616 in lifetime earnings, not including the $307,500 he won in August at the inaugural Run for a Million event.
Just five horses later, NRHA Six Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida entered the arena on the 2018 NRHA Markel Insurance Prospect Sale high seller Shine Colt Shine. With gracefully executed circles and powerful stops, it looked like McCutcheon’s lead could be in jeopardy. When the score was announced, Flarida and Shine Colt Shine fell just short with a 223.5.
Still, he wasn’t counting on winning the Level 4 Open Championship at the NRHA Futurity. “I didn’t expect to win it my first time here as a professional, but that’s everyone’s goal,” he said.
Competing in the third from last set, McCutcheon rode Guns And Dynamite. The 19-year-old trainer piloted the colt through another great run, resulting in a 223.5, tying Flarida for second.
Marioo Claim Championship After that, McCutcheon couldn’t have told you how the last seven horses scored, but he could have given you an update on college football. “I went to the bus and was watching Wisconsin vs. Ohio State and doing my best not to pay attention to it. I was just waiting for my mom to call me,” he admitted. Unbeknownst to him, his scores held, and McCutcheon won not only the Level 4 with Super Marioo, but also Levels 3 and 2, for $196,175 in earnings. Super Marioo’s nominator, Hillis Akin Family Partnership received $9,808. McCutcheon also tied for Reserve in the Level 4 on Guns And Dynamite, and took sole possession of the title in Levels 3 and 2. Combined with his earnings on Deja Vu With A Gun, McCutcheon’s winnings for the evening came to $341,899. That unofficially pushed him to NRHA Million Dollar Rider status. Super Marioo, owned by Story Book Stables, is by Gunnatrahya out of HA Chic A Tune. McCutcheon began riding the colt in early fall when he was purchased from Gunny Mathison by Freddy Brassfield. “Gunny sold me this horse this summer. He did a phenomenal job training him, and I just had to pick him up and do some of my things. Without Gunny, this never would have happened,” McCutcheon said.
Shortly after McCutcheon showed the colt at the Best of the West Futurity, he received a phone call from Brenda Joyce, owner of Story Book Stables. “She said she wanted to have a horse with me and asked about Super Marioo. She bought him from Freddy, and has been amazing to work with ever since,” he said. “This is the first horse I’ve had with her, and I’m really excited for the future, whatever she decides to do.”
McCutcheon and Kirstin Booth’s Guns And Dynamite, by Gunners Special Nite out of Chic Olena Starbuck, won a total of $145,724 across the three levels. Nominator Turnabout Farms received $7,286. “I thank my parents and grandparents for doing whatever it takes to make me as good as I can be,” he said. “There are hundreds of people who played into this, and I’m lucky I had the right horse to win tonight.” Flarida and Shine Colt Shine pocketed a check for $110,752 for the Level 4 Open Reserve title, with nominator Sally Amabile receiving $5,637. The Shine Chic Shine colt, out of Gunners Miss Oak, lived up to the high expectations of being the 2018 Markel Insurance Prospect Sale high seller. The colt is owned by Gaynia Revenberg.

McKinnon Larcombe
Claims Second Adequan® NAAC Title on Designed With Shine
McKinnon Larcombe and Designed With Shine capped off a stellar week with yet another Adequan® NAAC title in the Youth 14 – 18, after winning both the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro earlier this week.
In Saturday’s competition, the pair marked a 220, winning a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, an Adequan® vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, product from Classic Equine, and gift certificates to Bluebonnet Feed and SmartPak. “I went in today with the mentality that I didn’t need to run her as hard as I did the other day for the Non Pro. She was so good for me then, she didn’t have to do anything more for me to make me happy, but she went in there and did it once again,” Larcombe said. “She was perfect. She turned remarkably well for me, circled like she always does, and ran and stopped really well. I was so happy with her.” Designed With Shine, by Smart And Shiney out of Taris Designer Genes, is owned by McKinnon’s aunt Shauna Larcombe. “When I rode her the first time, I told my aunt I could easily take her into the show pen the next day. She’s so well-trained and easy to get along with, but I never imagined we would be this successful. I never thought in a million years I would have a horse like this to show. I’m very lucky,” she said. 14
Winning an Adequan® NAAC title has been a goal of Larcombe’s for many years. “There are some incredibly great horses in these classes, and you have to bring your A-game when you walk in the pen. There are great sponsors that make it possible for you to compete for saddles and big trophies, not to mention all the other fantastic prizes you can win,” she said. “It’s exciting because you know you have something to run for.” Larcombe shared how thankful she was to her great family and friends who support her. “Thank you to my auntie Shaua. Without her I wouldn’t be mounted on such a good horse. I thank my parents who pay for this hobby which is not cheap. My dad is a great coach who helps me every day. I thank everyone at the barn from Team Larcombe and Sterling Ranch. I thank my great friends. It takes a crew and there are too many people to name, but I’m appreciative of all of them,” she said. Taking second in the Adequan® NAAC Youth 14 – 18 with a 213.5 was Raeanna Thayn and Coded N Karma (Electric Code x Whiz N Snap). They won an Adequan® vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, product from Classic Equine and SmartPak, and gift certificates to Platinum Performance and Bluebonnet Feed. Reserve in the ancillary Youth 14 – 18 was won by Alexia Tordoff and Blue Collar Tag with a 218. Blue Collar Tag is by Whiz N Tag Chex and out of Kachina Oak Olena.

Horsewoman of the Year Award Renamed to Honor Becky Hanson
For immediate release — December 10, 2019 — Oklahoma City — The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is pleased to announce that the Horsewoman of the Year award has been renamed to honor NRHA Professional Becky Hanson, past NRHA board member and professional from Cle ments, Calif. “Becky exemplifies what we look for in the Horsewoman of the Year award,” said Shane Brown, NRHA Professional and Executive Committee member. “We feel like it sets a good example to continue the award in her name.” The newly dedicated Becky Hanson Professional Horsewoman of the Year award will be voted on by NRHA Professionals and announced with the other Professional of the Year awards at the NRHA Awards Banquet in June. Becky is known for her incredible photos of the Western lifestyle, horsemanship, her philanthropic heart, witty humor, and constant willingness to lend a hand wherever it is needed. “Becky is always willing to help out and volunteer, no matter where she’s needed, from coaching to tasks at the barn, and from the affiliate level to a national level; she is always willing to help everyone around her,” Brown said. Before stepping away from training horses herself, Becky had spent five years training reining horses in Italy, made multiple NRHA Derby finals, earned North American Affiliate titles and major event titles across the country, and coached endless non professionals to victory. Now her support is never far from her husband, NRHA Professional David Hanson who still trains and competes. “She did it all, from sending entries to work16
ing with clients and helping find good horses and making their local affiliate run,” Brown shared. “There was not one part of this business that she didn’t have her hand in, one way or another.” I n naming this award in her honor, the Professionals Committee hopes she will serve as a continuous reminder about what it means to be named Horsewoman of the Year. “She’s been an inspiration to people in this industry at all levels,” said Patrick Flaherty, NRHA Professionals Committee Chair. “She’s a huge influence, and I strongly believe her affiliate is successful today because of what she put into it. She and David set up an incredible business because of how they complemented each other. Their support was pivotal to their business and our industry.” Becky exemplifies what it means to be an NRHA Professional through her tenacity, morals, philanthropic heart, and the way she has continuously poured into every aspect of the reining industry for so many years. She has spent her life working to promote and grow the sport of reining through world-wide and local affiliate efforts, as well as serving on the NRHA Board and multiple committees. “We all wish the Professional of the Year awards existed when she was actively training and showing horses because she would have won it five years in a row,” Flaherty said. “Now that the professionals have come up with this award program, we want to be sure it pays homage to her, and this felt like the perfect way to do it.”

LUCA FAPPANI & GO
CINCH Level 4 & 3 Non Pro Futurity Rese
Luca Fappani didn’t know he’d get to show his horse three times in the non pro finals at his first NRHA CINCH Non Pro Futurity. While competing as draw 30 in the finals, Fappani was completing his second set of circles when a dog catapulted itself into the ring and tried to herd Fappani and his horse. “The first run was going pretty good. I saw something black and white run out in front of my horse, and I kept going, but the dog kept cutting the 18
circle. I didn’t want to run him over, so I stopped. I’d never seen anything like it,” Fappani said. Fappani and Gotta Get Diamonds were given the option of a re-run at the end of the finals, but that only gave him nine horses to prepare for yet another run. “He was pretty good the first time, so I trusted him the second time, and he was great. He did everything I wanted,” Fappani said. When the score of 220 was announced, Fappani had taken the lead of the Level 2 and Youth divisions but was tied with Jesse Asmussen for the lead of the Level 4 and 3. “My horse was great, but I wasn’t sure he could do the same in the runoff. the runoff we stayed here and gave him some water and just touched on a few buttons,” Fappni said. Fappani and Gotta Get Diamonds marked a 218 in the runoff, finishing as reserve champions in Levels 4 and 3. Still, earnings for the day came to $56,910. “This was my first futurity, and it was definitely one to remember,” Fappani said. Luca’s parents, Andrea and Tish, purchased Gotta Get Diamonds, by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Tinker With Diamonds, from Rancho Oso Rio in October. “Dad showed him a couple times, and marked a couple 218s, I think. I tried him at Best of the West, and then had a game plan coming in here to make the finals,” Fappani shared. “I took him out there and opened him up. He gave it everything.”
The 15-year-old was gracious, thanking the many people who supported him. “Thank you to my mom and dad and my brother. My whole family supports me,” he said. “Thank you to Rancho Oso Rio for letting us buy him.” Finishing second in the Level 2 Non Pro was Jessicah Keller and Snips Shining Gun with a 218. Keller and Snips Shining Gun, by Colonels Shining Gun out of newly inducted NRHA Hall of Fame mare Snip O Gun, also placed in Levels 4 and 3. Keller and Snips Shining Gun, owned by Hilldale Farm, pocketed $37,030. Taylor Zimmerman and Its All About Ruf, by Not Ruf At All and out of Dun Pretty Nifty, finished reserve in the Youth division with a 217.5. Zimmerman won $24,707 for her finals runs on Its All About Ruf. Its All About Ruf is owned by her grandfather, Vaughn Zimmerman. 19

Emily Emerson Wins NRHA Invitatio
Easily one of the most entertaining events of the National Reining Horse Association Futurity took place Thursday evening, when the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau presented the $20,000-added Invitational Freestyle.
Ten riders were invited to compete, and the pool was chosen from winners and crowd favorites from other freestyle events. Swashbuckler Captain Jack Sparrow, Santa, and more fantastic characters made an appearance in the Jim Norick Coliseum of State Fair Park. Taking top honors in the Invitational Freestyle, and winning a big check for $6,936, were Emily Emerson and Give Me Starbucks. They performed to Gary Allen’s hit song, “Every Storm Runs Out Of Rain,” and marked a 223. “I didn’t have the greatest year, and I did this song a few years ago. It hits a certain spot inside of you when you had a year you had hoped would be better. Doing this song and coming out at the top is a great way to start out the new year,” Emerson said. Emerson was riding Give Me Starbucks, a 9-year-old mare owned by Kelly Rainford. “This was the first time I got to be super serious with her and so the fact that I took the bridle off without not knowing how she would be, shows what a rock solid, good mare she is,” she shared. The pair entered the arena missing a very vital piece of equipment – the bridle. “I was feeling confident. When she walked in, she was really good. When I first loped her off, it didn’t go like I planned, but she locked in and gave me the run I was hoping for,” Emerson said. Having grown up on a ranch in Montana, Emerson has worked for Shane Brown for almost 13 years. “He’s taught me everything that I got done tonight,” she shared. Dan James and Don Magnum finished second in the Invitational Freestyle with a 222.5, collecting a check for $5,508. Third went to Sharee Schwartzenberger and Game Day Surprise, who won $4,080. 28

Jesse Asmussen and Ruf Style Of Pla
Great horses and riders were shining under the Friday-night lights of the Jim Norick Coliseum at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) CINCH Non Pro Futurity featured the top horses and riders from the preliminary round, and the champion was decided in an exciting runoff. Jesse Asmussen and Ruf Style Of Play drew the dreaded No. 1 position for the CINCH Non Pro Futurity finals, but the pair made it count, marking a 220 to take the lead of Levels 3 and 4. As rider after rider took a shot at the lead and fell short, Asmussen and his team worked hard to stay busy. “We were back at the stalls sitting around, pacing, sweeping, and doing anything to just stay busy,” he said. “You don’t really expect a tie. You think someone will come in and beat you.”
Luca Fappani had a wild run-in with a dog that jumped into the pen during his finals’ run, even though State Fair Park requires leashes for all dogs and were checking them at the door. Fappani was given the option of running again after the last draw. “I was just waiting for Luca to go at the end, and then he also marked a 220. We decided to run off, and we had only 15 minutes to get ready,” Asmussen explained. “This mare has been at Kole Price’s, and he told me to just trot her around and that she’d be good to show. It was nerve-wracking, but she was great.” Rules dictate that the runoff occurs in the same draw order as the original, so once again Asmus34
sen knew he had to set the pace. Once again, the 3-year-old mare gave her best, resulting in a 222. “She was phenomenal in the runoff. I couldn’t believe she was better there than the first time I showed her in the finals,” he said.
The win came with a bounty of prizes, and checks totaling $61,455. “Winning this is a dream every year, and until it happens, it is hard to imagine.” Asmussen purchased Ruf Style Of Play, by Not Ruf At All and out of UB Stylin With Me, from Vaughn Zimmerman earlier this year. “Bobby Avila Jr. called me in June and told me I needed to buy her. I didn’t need another horse at the time, but he kept calling me and talking to me about her, so we ended up buying her without ever trying her,” he explained. After showing the mare a couple times, Asmussen elected to send her to Kole Price. “We live in Iowa, and the weather was really bad, so I sent her to Kole’s and he did a phenomenal job getting her ready to come here. She felt so welltrained and easy. I owe him a huge thank-you. I couldn’t have done it on my own. Kole’s wife, Kelsey, did a great job of getting her pretty and making sure everything looks nice,” he said. “I also thank my wife and boys. It’s been a long week, and the boys have been great. My wife does so much at home and keeps me from selfdestructing. My mom and dad are also huge supporters. I thank them so much.” Making this win extra-special for Asmussen is that his long-time friend Dave Kunkle was able to be present. “Dave is the guy who got me started, and both times I’ve won it before he’s been in Iowa, so him being here was pretty special,” Asmussen said.

Martin Larcombe Wins Prime Ti It didn’t take much convincing when Rosanne Sternberg, and NRHA Million Dollar Owner,* asked Martin Larcombe to ride Shines Like A Spook. The royally bred colt is by NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire Smart Spook and out of Ebony Shines, who recently became one of two NRHA Million Dollar Dams. “Rosanne bred this horse, and owns both the sire and the dam, so this is a pretty good promotion for her brand. You can imagine in April when she said she had this colt that it didn’t take much to get me to try him,” Larcombe said with a laugh.
Larcombe and Shines Like Spook qualified for the Level 4 and 3 Open Finals, as well as the Prime Time. Their score of 220 equated to good checks in the Level 4 and 3, and the win in the Prime Time. All totaled, the pair took home $2,033 in finals cash. “I’ve taken him to a couple pre-futurities, and he’s been respectable. I know he has a lot of ability and a lot of stop. I think he will mature a bit more and get more solid as a show horse,” Larcombe shared. “Even saying that, I can’t complain about how good he’s been this week. 38
He has stepped up all week. He’s going to be a show horse.”
Sternberg and Larcombe have a long history together. They got to know each other when Larcombe was training reiners in Europe, and the relationship continued when his family moved to the United States. “I thank Rosanne. She’s had horses with me the past few years and has been a great customer. I also thank my crew, which is basically my family,” he said. “I also thank my great customers who support me.” Larcombe went one-two in the Prime Time, taking Reserve on One Sensationaldream, owned by Neylon Performance Horses LLC. The pair marked a 217.5, worth $11,410, with nominator Kathy Bagnell receiving $498. One Sensationaldream is by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Dun Up Sensational. *During the Level 4 Open Finals, Rosanne Sternberg unofficially became an NRHA Two Million Dollar Owner. Rosanne is only the second owner to reach this milestone, following Arcese Quarter Horses that reached the Two Million Dollar mark in 2012.

"I know my horse has a lot of ability and a lot of stop. I think he will mature a little bit more, get a little more solid as a show horse, but here he really stepped up and played with the big boys," said Martin Larcombe who rode Shines Like Spook (Six Million Dollar Sire Smart Spook x Million Dollar Dam Ebony Shines), owned by Rosanne Sternberg to the 2019 NRHA Prime Time Open Futurity Championship with a 221.5 score!

VANLANDINGHAM REINING HO 2019 NRHA Futurity
We are very thankful to have had another opportunity to show at the NRHA Futurity. We were very proud of all of our horses. Sail On Vintage showed like a champ and scored a 222 in last night's Open Finals, finishing in 5th place. Our son, Dalton, in his first-ever Futurity did a great job with Not Ruf Again in the Open finals for levels 1 and 2. As always, we are thankful for all of our owners, for their trust and support, as well as our sponsors, and everyone who worked so hard to put this show together. We are also extremely thankful to have had our entire family with us for finals day. Thank you guys for all your help! Finally, a huge congratulations to Cade and the entire McCutcheon family on their exciting night! 40

Jacob Ballard and Flashin Benjamin On October 6, Jacob Ballard took Flashin Benjamins into his training program. He was familiar with the horse, who he started as a 2-year-old, but the stallion had spent the last year-and-a-half with Kole Price. The pair only had two months to sync back up before the NRHA Futurity, but Ballard rose to the challenge, and the duo scored a 218 to win the Level 1 Open, place in Levels 3 and 2, and earn $52,389. “I’ve dreamed about being in the finals of the [NRHA] Futurity forever, and to pick off the Level 1 was pretty exciting,” said Ballard, who is 26 years old. “I can’t describe it.” Prior to running pattern 10, Ballard said he knew if he could execute the run-in, stop, and back-up well, everything else would fall into place. The horse didn’t let him down, turning even better under the bright lights than he did in the warm-up arena. “After I loped off [from my turns], I knew that he was locked in and I could go and push him in his circles,” Ballard said. “By the time I got done with my second lead

change, I knew I was home free. All I had to do was turn the corner and go stop him. He just killed the ground like he does every time.” Ballard, who apprenticed under Price before going out on his own at the beginning of 2019, said it was a testament to Price’s program that he was able to click with the horse so quickly. Since he only had two months before the NRHA Futurity, he knew he needed to make every ride count. Schooling at his local college gave him a place to practice in a show setting, which he thinks gave him an advantage. Flashin Benjamins (Gunnatrashya x Shiners Hot Flash) was owned by Leann Spurlock at the time of the NRHA Futurity and was nominated by Nicole Miller, who will receive $2,619. Ballard said the horse’s owners have been very involved, which he respected and appreciated.
“You can’t get to where I am without having good owners,” he said. “Everyone wants to talk about the horse and other factors, but the owners are a huge part of it.” The stallion may be moving on to new things, as his owners received an of-
ns Win Level 1 Open Championship fer on him at the NRHA Futurity. Ballard has some other prospects waiting in the wings, but he won’t forget the colt he started and then rode to an NRHA Futurity L1 Open Championship. “I remember stopping him when he first got sliders on, and he stopped really smooth — about 10, 12 feet,” he said. “He has that same effect, only now he does it with 25 feet. He hasn’t changed a whole lot as far as talent goes, just a lot of the buttons are different and more progressed.
“It’s been a long road of ups and downs, but I’m thankful for all of it,” he added. “I wasn’t sure it was the best move in January [to go out on my own], but God is on my side as far as the events and people he’s put in my life to get me where I am.” The Level 1 Reserve Championship was won by Josh Tishman and Lanas Lil Joe, by Lil Joe Cash and out of Elanachics. Lanas Lil Joe, owned by Steve Carr, won $29,493. Rainbow Ridge Equestrian, nominator of Lanas Lil Joe, received $1,474.

Short Stirrup and Adequan® NAAC Youth 13 & Under Champions Crowned in Oklahoma City The Adequan® Arena at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City has been bustling with activity all week, as riders from across North America compete in the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships. Youth competition began Friday with the Adequan® NAAC Youth 13 & Under and the ancillary Short Stirrup class. Madison Rafacz has had quite the week. She traveled from Ocala, Flo., hoping to do well in the Adequan® NAAC competition. She started off strong by winning the NAAC Limited Non Pro on her gelding Whizenboonsmal. The pair followed that up with another NAAC title three days later – this time in the Novice Horse Non Pro. She capped off her time in Oklahoma City on Friday by winning the Adequan® NAAC Youth 13 & Under, but this time on Wimpys Dun Twistin. “It was a really good run today. I was just trying to have a clean ride, and she was really good for me,” Rafacz said. “It was great to win these classes. I came out here to show seven times, and was hoping I could win something, so to win these three was great.” Wimpys Dun Twistin is by Wimpys Little Step out of Totally Dun Twistin. “She’s been in our barn since she was three or so, and she’s around 13 now. A customer owned her, and she (Wimpys Dun Twistin) went away for a while to have babies, but now she’s back and we own her,” Rafacz explained. “She’s back in shape now and winning, and she’s just perfect. She’s the favorite in the barn.” Although his stablemate won the title, Whizenboonsmal (Peptoleap x She Whiz A Star) still pulled off a run that was good enough to mark a 214 and win second in the NAAC Youth 13 & Under. “He is so tired. He showed four times and he’s just over it and ready to be home, but he was good, too,” Rafacz said. 48

The 12-year-old took home many prizes, including a Bob’s Custom Saddle, Adequan® vests, Platinum Performance jackets, Montana Silversmiths buckles, product from SmartPak and Classic Equine, and gift certificates to Platinum Performance and Bluebonnet. “I thank my mom and dad, Kyla Thurlow, Steven Borgia, Jenna Webb, Stephen Graycheck, McKenna Ivey, my grandma back home, and everyone for being here for me,” she said.

Jose Vazquez Wins Non Pro Prime Time
Over the years, Jose Vazquez has built an impressive breeding program and has made an impressive career on the resulting foals of his program. He won the Prime Time Non Pro title and placed third in the Level 4 Non Pro on one of those foals, this one a colt named Xtra Winding Step.
“It was a fun run,” Vazquez said of his 219-point run in the finals, which resulted in a $20,862 paycheck. “He showed he can compete at a high level. I showed him two times before here. He came out here and put together two quality runs. Of course, you want to win every time, so I hope our turn is right around the corner.” Xtra Winding Step is by Wimpys Little Step out of SLJ Smartlikewhinny. “This is a horse we raised. I showed his grandmother, mother, granddaddy. The first good horse I showed was his grandmother,” he added. “This one is a little more special than the rest. He’s one of the best. I hope you hear from us again soon.” Vazquez was quick to thank his friends and family. “I thank my family and Alejandro and Mario, his brother. They work hard so I can have fun. Everything is a team effort. My veterinarian, my horseshoer — we all work as a team. That’s how we compete on this level,” he said. Finishing tied for second in the Prime Time Non Pro was Andre Lauzon and Kelle Smith. Lauzon rode A Whizard Dream (Magnum Chic Dream x Miss Poco Whizard), while Smith rode Spookadoodlede (Tricked Out Spook x Tivitos Top Starlet). Lauzon also placed in the Level 3, for total earnings of $8,696. Smith placed in the Level 3 and Level 4 to take home $16,296.

Debbie Good Wins
NAAC Rookie Prime Time on Chics Love Me Wimpy Debbie Good and her 9-year-old gelding Chics Love Me Wimpy (Wimpys Little Step x Dream About Magic) marked a 213 to win the Adequan® NAAC Prime Time Rookie. Winning an NAAC title has been a goal of hers since purchasing the gelding three years ago. “It feels absolutely amazing. I can’t even express it. Josh (Tishman) won so many awards on this horse, and I’ve just been trying to win one of my own,” Good shared.” The first ever Adequan® NAAC Prime Time Rookie Champion received a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddle, as well as an Adequan® vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, Classic Equine product, and gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak. “We’ve been practicing in the arena all week and working on our circles. We were finding the holes we had and working on them. I broke my shoulder nine weeks ago, and my goal was just to get back here,” Good said. “Our goal was to go in the arena and not get overwhelmed by it. I felt very confident when I walked in. He was locked into me, and we really went for it on our rundowns, slides, and rollbacks.” 62

Stil o Wins NAAC Open & Int. Open Titles at Futurity
In addition to the aged event taking place in the Jim Norick Coliseum, the National Reining Horse Association Futurity features the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship, which kicked off on Thursday, Nov. 28. Lauren Rufo, NRHA Affiliate Program Representative, was excited to crown the first of the 2019 Adequan® NAAC Champions. She explained that the Adequan® NAAC helps spotlight a variety of members and horses from across North America. “It’s a great opportunity to recognize our grassroots program riders and horses at the most exciting NRHA event of the year,” she said. This year, each of the Adequan® NAAC Champions will be recognized the next day in the Jim Norick Coliseum Arena, where they will receive their Adequan® NAAC champion vest.
Mirjam Stillo Wins Adequan® NAAC Open with Steppin Little Lena

Mirjam Stillo claimed the Adequan® NAAC Open title on Steppin Little Lena with a 219.5. In addition to a check for $1,957, the pair also won a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, as well as Classic Equine product.
Steppin Little Lena, owned by Heidi Pichotta, is by Wimpys Little Step out of Collena O Lena, and Stillo say’s he’s exceptionally easy to take care of. “He’s super easy at home. We don’t work him very hard. He’s had a really busy show season, so we give him time off and then prep him right before each horse show. This show was different. We practically just came back from the World Show, and didn’t have much time, but fortunately it worked out,” she said. “He still has a busy week. I’ll show him again in the Novice Horse Open, and his owner will show him in the Rookie. After that he’ll get a welldeserved winter break.”
“It was a good ride and I was happy with it. We just ran in and he was phenomenal stopping. He did that great, and we stayed clean everywhere else. He stayed with me all the time and gave it his all,” Stillo recounted.
Stillo and her crew will stay busy this week with Futurity and ancillary entries, as well as a couple horses in the NRHA/ Markel Insurance Futurity Sale. “I thank the owner who allows me to ride him and trusts me with him. We had a plan to step him up slowly and it all worked out. I also thank my team, my husband, and everyone at home who takes care of things when we’re gone,” she said.

Traci Nelson North American
Affiliate Championship Open Winner
The NRHA Futurity opened up with a big win by Mirjam Stillo on Steppin Little Lena. She was the North American Affiliate Championship Open winner on Thursday. The presentation took place on Friday, but came with a special twist.
“I’ve known Mirjam since she was a younger youth. Back in Italy I had trained all-around horses for about three years,” said Traci Nelson who represented Adequan® during the presentation. “Mirjam was showing all-around horses at the time. I have seen her go from youth to where she has come now, and she’s an amazing rider.” Mirjam started out riding hunters/ jumpers before adding the all-around events—Western pleasure, horsemanship, trail, etc. After graduating high school, Mirjam transitioned to the reining world. And Traci had a front-row seat for the whole thing.
66
“It was pretty cool to have seen her here—she was always an amazing horsewoman, it’s just in her blood. To see her come from her youth to now being a top professional in the United States is pretty special,” Traci added.

WALTENBERRY WALTENBERRY
Blair McFarlin Wins CINCH Level 1 Non Blair McFarlin had never shown at the NRHA CINCH Non Pro Futurity before, but she made it count, qualifying for the finals of the Level 1 through Level 3. In the end, she and her horse, Starlights N Dreams, won the Level 1 Championship with a 215. “I’m extremely excited to even be in the finals. I had a futurity horse a few years ago, but this is the first one to bring here,” she said. McFarlin’s earnings for all levels came to $20,760. McFarlin and Starlight N Dream, by Magnum Chic Dream out of Strike A Star, had to make an extra run to earn a finals berth. “The first time I went in there and let her do her job, and she was good for me, but not good enough to make it back, so we rode in the consolation round on Wednesday,” she explained. “That really solidified for her and me where we are and what we need to work on.” McFarlan’s trainer, NRHA Professional Nathan Piper, did most of the prep work on the mare. “He would ride her early in the morning, and then I’d just cruise her around before we went in,” McFarlin said. “Before the finals, Nathan told me to go have fun and stay out of the penalty box.”
68
McFarlin felt confidence from the first stop of the run. “She ran in and dragged her butt, so I knew we had started on a good note. She got turned well for me, and that’s been her weak spot, so when we got through that I knew we were golden,” she said. McFarlin, of Franklin, Tennessee, has been riding reiners since she was 12 years old but spent the last four years in college. “I’ve been out of the loop a little bit, but she’s been a fun horse to get back into it,” she said. “I thank my dad, Mike McFarlin, for sticking with me and supporting me all these years.” Sally Berg and Had Us At Hello (REF Black Mamba x Dunit N Continental) finished as reserve champions in the Level 1, and placed in Levels 2 through 4, winning more than $21,645.

Devin Warren Wins Adequan® NAAC Nov. Horse Open Level 2 on Outlaw Dreams
With a score of 218.5, Devin Warren and Outlaw Dreams clinched the Adequan® NAAC Novice Horse Open Level 2 championship for owner Megan Mulqueen. The pair also won the ancillary class, bringing total earnings to $1,611. They also won several great prizes, including a saddle from Continental Saddlery, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, and Classic Equine product. “I was really please with him today. I liked feeling how hooked he was in the circles. They had a really good song playing, and it was fun. It was one of those rides you could sit back, take it in, and enjoy it,” Warren said recounting the run on Outlaw Dreams, by Magnum With A Dream out of Mollie Montana. “I’ve had this horse for three years now. He’s been an awesome little horse that goes and does his job. He pulls double-duty in the open and non pro, and has been consistent all year.” Warren, who’s representing the Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association in the Mountain Region, was excited to win the NAAC title. “This has gotten so much more prestigious, and they’ve been working hard with the sponsors to make this a bigger part of the show. The owners are more apt to send them down here, so that makes it nice,” Warren said. The Colorado native will stay busy this week, not only showing his futurity horses but also working with his youth and non pro riders. “I thank my wife Joleen. She’s at home holding down the fort with my son who just had his tonsils out. I couldn’t do it without her. She’s always behind the scenes giving me so much support,” Warren said. 73

Colt Mitchell Wins Short Stirrup Championship on Playgun Chic Olena
Charismatic Colt Mitchell claimed the Championship of the Short Stirrup division on Playgun Chic Olena. The pair wowed the judges, earning a 217.5. “He was great. The only problem I had was I slowed down after the center. That was our only bobble, but the rest of the run was really good,” Mitchell explained. Mitchell’s family has owned Playgun Chic Olena, by Smart Chic Olena and out of Mamas Packin, for several years. “He’s actually my sister Molly’s horse, but I stole him from her. He’s 16 years old now, and we’ve had him since he was about seven.” Mitchell added, “He’s just a great horse that is really good at everything. He does it all right. I love him.” The Short Stirrup title isn’t the only thing Mitchell is taking back to Missouri with him. He also got a new beagle puppy. “His name is Hank. I’m going to use him to hunt rabbits,” he said. Mitchell, who will turn 11 next year, still has a year of Short Stirrup eligibility left. “I thank the good Lord for keeping me safe and giving me a nice run, and I thank all my family members for coming to watch and support me,” he said. Becca Schaffhauser took the Short Stirrup reserve title on Dun Got My Rest with a 212.5. Dun Got My Rest, by Hollywood Dun It and out of Got My Rest, is owned by Becca’s father, Sam. 78

Kyla Thurlow Wins Adequan® NAAC Rookie Level 2 on Kachina Kyla Thurlow wasn’t feeling too confident riding into the Adequan® Arena for the NAAC Rookie Level 2. The night before, her horse had shown he had his own ideas. “I was a little nervous, but he was wonderful today. When we got in the arena I knew he was going to let me show him,” she said of their run. “We had a penalty to the right, but he circled better than he ever has, and he stopped really good for me. I couldn’t have asked for more from him.” Not only did Thurlow win the Adequan® NAAC title, she also won the accompanying ancillary class, winning a bevy of prizes including a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, an Adequan® vest, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, Classic Equine product, and gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak.
80
“I never thought I would win here. I did the Rookie of the Year many years ago, and it’s changed for sure. Now you have a lot of steps to get here, and you have to conquer them all. It’s been wonderful,” Thurlow said. Although Thurlow lives in Massachusetts, her horse, Kachina Olena Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Kachina Oak Olena) resides in Florida with Mark and Shannon Rafacz. “I fly down for the weekend a couple times a month to see him and ride. I don’t get a lot of time in the saddle, so I’m fortunate he’s as nice as he is,” Thurlow said. “I thank Shannon and Mark. I owe them. They make this possible for me. I also thank everyone who has a hand in this – my mom and dad, Madison Rafacz, and my boyfriend Steven.”

They also took second in the ancillary Level 1. The Yarbroughs purchased Xtra Rubiesforwimpy, by Wimpys Little Step out of Ruby Chic Olena, from one of Martin Larcombe’s customers earlier this year. “I haven’t had her very long – just enough to get her qualified for regionals. We won the Level 1 and Level 2 at the Regional Affiliate 90
finals, so my husband said he’d bring me out here to show,” Yarbrough said. “I thank my husband. He’s my best friend and coach, and we do everything together. I also thank our family and friends who do so much to help us. Most of all I thank God for the opportunity, the ability, and of course the horses.” Jessicah Keller took second in the NAAC Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 on Smoking Ice, owned by Hilldale Farm. The pair marked a 215, winning $476.03, a champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and Platinum Performance, and product from SmartPak and Classic Equine. Shawn Fl a ri d a Wi n s NRHA Ancil ary Open on Spooks Gotta Spark With an incredible 225, Shawn Flarida and Spooks Gotta Spark won the ancillary open, which ran concurrently with the Adequan® NAAC. The win netted owner Gaynia Revenberg a check for $2,265. Flarida rode Spooks Gotta Spark at the Run For A Million in Las Vegas earlier this year, where they finished fourth. “He was awesome there. I actually had him as a three-year-old, but he got hurt and went home. Loris Epis rode him as a four and five-year-old, and then I got him back,” Flarida explained. “He’s been a great horse for me and has always been a personal favorite of mine.” 92
Flarida, the NRHA’s only six million dollar rider, explained that Pattern 9 suits the stallion’s style. “He was really good. It’s a run-in pattern that fits him really well. It was very, very cool, and he’s such a fun horse to show,” Flarida said. Spooks Gotta Spark is by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Doolittle Lena. “I’m just honored that his owner let me ride him at the Run For A Million and here, and I thank her for the opportunity. I’m glad to ride this horse whenever they allow it,” he said. “My help was awesome. My son Sam is always a huge help as well. I thank my wife Michelle, because without her I couldn’t do it at all.”

I use it every day on a couple of horses that have older injuries and are a little bit stiffer. If any horses have a recent injury, or any sort of inflammation, I definitely put them on the TheraPlate as a preventative. What I like personally the most about TheraPlate is using it at horse shows. I use it on every horse I show— we do about twenty five-minute sessions every day before we ride them. If you have a horse that is a little uptight or you have to get their attention, I definitely think they become a lot more relaxed after the TheraPlate. It’s really a great product.”

Top Reiners Rely On TheraPlate
TOM McCUTCHEON “We use TheraPlate on all of our horses, it’s a daily maintenance for us. We started using it at a horse show, and now it’s part of the daily routine. I think it’s been really good for the horses rehabbing. While TheraPlate works well if you have a problem, it is also good to use to make sure you don't have a problem. For my show horses that have been sound, I think TheraPlate is really good at keeping them sound. Some of the rehab horses that haven’t been exposed to it come in here and get the TheraPlate treatment and I think it shortens their rehab considerably.”

With a 216.5, Matthew Cunningham and Im Spookin Electric, owned by Cross C Ranch, topped the Limited Open. Open ancillary class that was run concurrently with the NAAC. “This is a 4-year-old stud we’ve been bringing along nice and slow. We just started showing him, and this was the first time we’ve really ran him hard, and he was really good,” Cunningham said of the colt, by Spooks Gotta Whiz and out of Electric Whizanna. “We got him last spring, and he’d
just barely been started so he was kind of behind, but he’s coming along nice.” As for today’s run, Cunningham said he was pleased. “He was really honest. We took it nice and quiet, and I feel really good about him,” he said. “If we don’t sell him, I’ll take him home and get him ready for my wife to show in the non pro. An exciting runoff decided the champion of the Adequan® NAAC Rookie Professional, and when the last stop had been made, Cody Garrison and Bombshell Banjo were victorious. The pair, who also won the ancillary Rookie Professional class, took home $474, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, and Classic Equine product.
“The first run, she was awesome and showed her ever-loving heart out for me. This mare’s big thing is stopping, and she didn’t disappoint,” Garrison recalled. “In the runoff, she felt good. The cool thing that she’s 12, and we showed the first time right at the end of the class. For her to go back in and show again like that is great. She was tired, but did her job and didn’t anticipate at all. She’s unbelievable.” Bombshell Banjo is owned by Garrison’s girlfriend Brogan Lee, who typically shows in the rookie classes. When Brogan had to have back surgery, Bombshell Banjo was turned out to be a broodmare for a year. “We brought her back

for Brogan to show at the Run For A Million. I was on the way to school the mare, and she called me and told me to show her because we were in the running for a world title,” he said. “She’s a once-in-a-lifetime horse and gives it all every time she goes in the pen.” Garrison and Bombshell Banjo, by Banjo Whiz out of Bob Acre Badgerlena, actually qualified for the Adequan® NAAC in four divisions – the Rookie Professional, Limited Open, Intermediate Open, and Open. They showed Thursday in the Intermediate Open and tied for third. “It’s been a great year. I thank my girlfriend, my dad who was watching today, my family, my mom, my brother, Shawn Flarida, Mark Turner, and Mike Davis,” he said. Kaleigh Geringer and Lil Coded Jac took second in both the Adequan® NAAC and ancillary Rookie Professional. Lil Coded Jac, owned by Susan Meyer, is by Electric Code out of Hot Coded Candy. They won $372, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and Platinum Performance, and product from SmartPak and Classic Equine.

Xtra Half N Half Tops NRHA
On December 7 during the 2019 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity and Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships, 56 horses walked through the ring at the NRHA/Markel Marketplace Sale. As Xtra Half N Half strode into the sale arena, bidders sat up and took notice. The handsome 2018 sorrel colt (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Cremes Chic Olena x Smart Chic Olena) brought a final bid of $64,000 from Jimmy Nichols, of Templeton, California, making him the highest seller of the day. Consigned by Heritage Farms, he is a half-brother to the earners of more than $250,000. Xtra Half N Half is enrolled in the NRHA Nomination Program and the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC). “We just liked the way he’s bred, the way he’s made. He’s so pretty-headed,” Nichols said. “Watching him in his video, he’s just really physical, but he seems really quietminded.” Nichols planned to send the colt to Mathieu Buton for training.
Nichols and his wife, Nancy, also purchased the second-highest-seller Lil Whizin Inferno (Inferno Sixty Six x Miss Jacspins Whiz x Conquistador Whiz), a 2018 red dun filly who was consigned by Terry and Warnetta
102
Martin. Nichols said he saw the same characteristics in her that interested him in Xtra Half N Half. “She’s not very big, but she’s so physical,” he added. “We’re going to take her home, and I’ll ride her myself and get her ready. I’ve shown in the Open all my life and trained there in California, and we’ve had our own now for five or six years. I’m actually considering going back and doing the non-pro with her.” Lil Whizin Inferno was in training with Josh Visser for 60 days at the time of the sale. She is five panel negative and enrolled in the NRHA Nomination Program, NRHA Euro Nomination Program, and NRBC. The gavel fell at $31,000 for Heritage Farms/Parker Slavin Performance Horses consignment HF A Winforthechics, a 2018 buckskin filly. Purchased by Gabriel de la Torre, the mare (HF Mobster x Win Smart Chicy x Smart Chic Olena) is a half-sister to National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) money-earner and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) pointearner Duallers Smart Chic. HF A Winforthechics is enrolled in the NRHA Nomination Program and NRBC. The NRHA/Markel Marketplace Sale wrapped up the NRHA Futurity Sales. The evening was topped by the $175,000 sale of Custom Vintage Berry, a 2017 bay roan colt (A Sparkling Vintage x Custom Roan Berry x Custom Crome). Steve Simon consigned the horse, who was then purchased by Elementa. “She [Elementa owner, Cecilia Fiorucci] loved the horse from Europe as soon as she saw him,” said agent Domenico Lomuto of Slide or Die LLC. “He will go to Elementa, and I think Cira [Baeck] will show him at the next [European] Futurity. I think that with him, it will probably be one of the best stables in Europe for sure.” Custom Vintage Berry was in training with Nici Schneider West for 335 days by the time of the sale. His dam is a full sister to American Quarter

Horse Association (AQHA) World Champion Custom Red Berry, an earner of more than $187,000. Custom Vintage Berry was enrolled in the NRHA Nomination Program and the NRBC. A bid of $67,000 made Xtra Kiss Me Again the second-highest seller. Consigned by Gabriel Diano, the 2017 sorrel colt was purchased by Karl Roberts.
Xtra Kiss Me Again (Boom Shernic x SS Kiss Me Kate x Wimpys Little Step) is a grandson of One Tuf Muffin, an earner of nearly $78,000 who was an NRHA Non Pro Reserve World Champion. He was enrolled in the NRHA Nomination Program and the NRBC. The third-highest seller went for a price of $62,000 and was a young broodmare. Im Mizzen Gunner, a 5-year-old palomino mare consigned by Toyon Ranch LLC, was purchased by Russell Coiles. Im Mizzen Gunner (Colonels Smoking Gun x Mizzen Shine x Shining Spark) was injured as a yearling and sold as broodmare sound. She had carried two foals in the past but was reset this year, and sold with an embryo conceived May 9, 2019, by SG Frozen Enterprize. Reining Team Germany · November 19 · ‼️ REINING REMAINS FEI DISCIPLINE ‼️ Fantastic news from Moscow! The delegates of the general assembly have just voted for the stay of our discipline in the Fédération Equestre Internationale.
This great decision allows us to continue to present western equestrian sport on the world stage of Equestrian Sports. However, there is also hard work ahead of us to fulfill the 4-year plan presented by the nrha USA. It is now up to us to sustainably increase the number of fei registered reining horses and riders ❗️ Photo: Tom Hautmann at Hyatt Regency Moscow Petrovsky Park. 106

All totaled, the pair won $1,692. Smart Little Dunnit is by Smart Spook and out of Jan Van Bar B Dun It. “We were fortunate to get him from the McCutcheons this year. I feel honored to have such a nice horse to show,” Hanson said. “Today he was good. He tried and he showed good. He’s got a great disposition. He’s a seven-year-old stud, but he’s so goodnatured. Cade did an excellent job on him this summer, and I’m fortunate to follow up on such a good horse.” Hanson noted that owner Lisa Dentoni will be showing Smart Little Dunnit in the future at affiliate events with the goal of returning to the Adequan® Arena in 2020. “I thank my family, friends, and help, and the Dentonis for letting me take the reins on this horse.” Hanson added, “My wife isn’t here today, and it’s a very difficult thing. I would love to have her here. She’s always been right here with me, and I thank her for everything she’s always done.” Joshua Crawley and Spin N Wimp took second in the Intermediate Open with a 215, collecting $416. Tanner Boyes & Guns Last Chance Claim Adequan® NAAC Int. Boyes and Guns Last Chance won a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, Classic Equine product, and $1,277. They earned an additional $810 for placing in both the NAAC Open and the ancillary Intermediate Open. “I just started working for the owner this year, and this horse has been an absolute dream to work with. I actually share him with Paige Vernon, a non pro, and she’s been doing a phenomenal job with him,” Boyes explained. “White River Ag Products owns him, and they’ve been incredible about letting us take him to all the events and keep him happy, so it’s been great.” Guns Last Chance is by Gunner out of Shiners Woman, and Boyes noted that the NAAC was definitely an objective. “This was definite-

ly a goal this year, and this horse did great for me. I can’t complain about how he’s done all year,” he said. “The run-in pattern was really good for him. We were able to get that pretty solid, and after that, he smoked his circle, then I just let him do his job.” Boyes and Guns Last Chance traveled 15 hours from Wisconsin to compete. “It has been amazing coming down here to do this. I was lucky we were able to cruise though in the NAAC and compete. It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I thank my wife. She’s been great and pushes me to be the best I can. I also thank White River Ag Products.” Boyes was also part of a three-way tie for reserve in the Intermediate Open with Dan Yarbrough and Cody Garrison. Boyes rode Whizkeys Hot Jewel, also owned by White River Ag Products, Yarborough rode Gunna Bea Natural owned by Judy Yarbrough Realty, while Garrison rode Bombshell Banjo, owned by Brogan Lee. Sam Flarida & PS Misses Officer Win NRHA Nov. Horse Non Pro Ancillary With a big score of 219.5, Sam Flarida won both levels of the ancillary Novice Horse Non Pro classes on PS Misses Officer. “She ran in really well. We went really hard in the run-in. She stopped forever. Her first turn was a little weak, but I was super pleased with the rest of the pattern.” He added, “She killed the last three stops. It’s the biggest she’s stopped, ever.” PS Misses Officer is a 3-year-old by Wimps Littlecolonel and out of PS A Whizzen Chic. “She won New York earlier this year and has been strong for me all year. She had a couple months off, but she came back really well, and I think she will be a really good derby horse,” Flarida, who’s only 16 years old, shared. Flarida may be done showing for the week, but he’s staying busy helping his father, NRHA Six Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida, get ready to show in the Futurity. “My dad is the one who gives me all the advice and helps me with everything I do,” Flarida said. “I thank my whole family, and everyone who helped me here. I wish my brother and sister, Cody and Courtney, could have been here, too.”

Cremona, November 28 — Provided by Simona Diale, International Horse Press — The 35th edition of the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA) Futurity this year was made even more prestigious with the Elementa 50.000 euroadded 4-year-old Futurity. Run in a qualifying go round and seeded finals, the Open and Non Pro divisions closed the sixth day of competition in Cremona, Italy. 116
Stefano Ferri Taking the L2 Championship with a 218.5 was Stefano Ferri and UB Electric (Electric Code x UB Styin With Me) owned by Luga LLC. “I’ve only been riding this horse for a short while, as a matter of fact he was shown by my colleague and friend Mirko Midili,” said Ferri. “I still have to get to know him, it’s the second time I’ve shown him, and I have to thank Mirko for helping me out here. I look forward to showing him in the derbies as I know he has a lot of potential.”
ded IRHA 4-year-old Futurity
win the Elementa IRHA 4-year-old Open Alberto Ferrara
The L1 Open Futurity Championship went to Alberto Ferrara who scored a 212 with Little Bingo Player (Peptos Lil Bingo x Supertrump Out), owned by Riccardo Morichi, between the reins. “This is a particularly sweet win since I convinced the owner [Morichi] to breed his mare to Peptos Lil Bingo,” said Ferrara. “This gelding is a product of this cross and I am really happy for this sweet and talented horse. His future includes working on cows, like his sire, and then we’ll go from there.”
Massimiliano Ruggeri Italian Professional Massimiliano Ruggeri aboard MR No Guns In Town (Gunstar x Dunnit With Cash) owned by Az. Agr. Equiesse laid down a run worth 219, enough to take home both the Level L(4) and L3 Open Championships. “This victory is for all of us: the breeder, the owner and all my team,” said Ruggeri. “I saw this horse when he was a 2-year-old, bred by Max Rudari, and when he was a baby he was already a great mover. One of my clients purchased him; after that I moved and met up with this horse five months ago after his new owner contacted me to ask me if I would be willing to take him in training. He hasn’t been shown much, and I am certain he still has a lot of potential as he is very talented and still has a lot to learn. Tonight he showed everyone how good he is and now we’ll decide his future step by step.”

Bernardelli & Shine Pop are the 2019 IRHA/IRHBA/NRHA Non Pro Futurity Champions Cremona, November 29 — Provided by Simona Diale, International Horse Press
Run in a qualifying go round and seeded finals, the 2019 edition of the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA) Futurity saw Italian Edoardo Bernardelli and his mount, Shine Pop, wear the 76.000 euro-added Level (L)4 and 37.000 euro-added L3 Non Pro Futurity crown. By Shine Chic Shine and out of MM Lollipop, the sorrel stallion was purchased when he was one month old by Bernardelli and was broke and trained by the Italian rider. “There was something about him when I first saw him that made me want to take him home,” he said. “I love the way he’s bred and thought he was a great mover from the first time I set my eyes on him. Before coming here, I showed him twice at a Lombardy regional show and things did not go too well, I guess because we still needed to get to know each other. In coming here, I knew I could place my trust in him because he has such a big heart, and he proved me right. I would like to thank Guglielmo Fontana for helping me tonight during the finals and my parents for supporting me all the way.” 118

Gabriele Carrarini Gabriele Carrarini and his home-bred CG Smart N Gold (Arc Surprising Smart x Arc Girl Chic N Gold) scored a 214 in the finals taking home the 16.000 euro-added L2 Non Pro Championship as well as the Reserve Championship in the L4 and L3. “This is a very special night for me,” he said. “Not only was he born at our place, we actually own both the sire and the dam. Chris Lucchina broke him and then he was in training with Cristina Fiscella for a few months. I took over the reins after that short period and have mainly trained him myself, even though I try to go and ride with Max Ruggeri who has been my mentor for the past ten years. It’s been a pretty special show season as I won the Austrian Futurity as well as the Lombardy regional futurity.” 122

Sharon
De Groot of the Netherlands and her own Tinsel Whizington (Tinsel Jac x Conquistador Sis) added another title to the string of success they’ve had in the show pen this year by winning the 11.000 euro-added L1 Non Pro division with a 210. The duo earned the Austrian Non Pro Futurity Reserve Championship, the NRHA Belgium L2 and L1 Non Pro Futurity Championship and the NRHA France L4 Non Pro Futurity. “He’s really sweet and he does everything for me,” said the Dutch Rider. “He’s a funny horse, he loves to play around, but when you ride him he’s always ready to go. I’m really proud of him and I have to thank my trainer Quentin Galliere and his wife Kimmy Obenhaus for the work they did with him, and Dominik Reminder for helping me here since Quentin and Kimmy just had a baby and of course stayed home.”

It was yet another win for Swiss Fabienne Kuratl-Suter and her Alpha Top Gun (NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire Hollywoodstinseltown x Smoking Walla Wanda): After topping the L4-3- and 2 qualifier, the pair swept both the L3 and L2 Futurity Championships with a 214.5 after taking home the NRHA of Germany L3 and L2 Futurity titles. “I stopped riding for a couple of years after my second son,” said a smiling Fabienne. “I love showing, this is my life, so I going back into the show pen came easy…especially thanks
Susanna Sodi
An enthused Susanna Sodi took the L1 Championship aboard her Ladysdreamofblueeyes (NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire Magnum Chic Dream x Check Your Gun Lady). “He’s a USA-bred horse. I purchased him from [NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider] Craig Schmersal after last year’s NRHA Futurity and this is our first big show together,” she said. “He’s such a good and nice show horse; he loves to work and he has amazing rollbacks. Also in barn life, he’s adorable. His barn name is “Cinghialone [big boar] — she added with a laugh — he always wants to touch and stay with the humans! I’m planning to show him at the Derby here in Cremona the next May and I cannot wait.”

to my great trainer Grischa Ludwig. I really could not have done this without him. He keeps my horses so tuned and in tip-top condition. I am really thrilled with this win and, to tell the truth, I did not know I had also won the L3 until it was time to go in for the awards presentation.” Ludwig was quick to praise his non pro’s win: “Fabienne is as good as any open rider in the pen. The only thing you need to tell her is to press the right buttons and she does it!” Photos by Bonaga Communication

Nogue Puig and A Whi The 50.000 euro-added Elementa IRHA 4-year-old Futurity saw one of Europe’s rising star rise to the top of the finals standings in the Non Pro division: winning the Level (L)4 was Andreu Nogué Puig and his faithful companion A Whiz N Cash (Custom Cash Advance x A Whiz N Wranglers) take the prize with a final score of 218. “This is really a special win. It’s is our second here at the Italian Futurity since last year we won all levels of the 3-year-old Futurity,” said the 17-year-old. “I would like to dedicate this Championship to my grandmother who passed away one week ago. It’s still a very fresh loss and I thought about her during my whole run — I felt she was with me from the beginning of the pattern to the end. She didn’t care that much about horses but A Whiz N Cash was always special to her. She loved him and she always said that he was great for me. Of course, I need to thank my parents for being such great supporters and sponsors as well as my trainers, Mirko Midili and [NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider] Bernard Fonck for helping me out during this year.

Morris Kulmer Wins Adequan® NAAC Prime Time Non Pro on NVR What A Lucky Joe
Morris Kulmer and his horse, 5-year-old NVR What A Lucky Joe, clinched the top spot in the Adequan® NAAC Prime Time Non Pro with a score of 215. Along with a check for $2,364, Kulmer also was presented with a saddle from Continental Saddlery, an Adequan® champion vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, and Classic Equine product.
“This horse was in the winner’s circle here last year when we won the Novice Horse, and that put him over the limit. This year we showed in the Non Pro and Prime Time,” said Kulmer, who represents the Arizona Reining Horse Association in the Southwest Region. “It is always fun to come show out here.” Although they had a winning run, Kulmer shared that it could have been better. “We had a bobble coming in. I was one of the last on the ground, so I was a little nervous about finding the right part of dirt, and I didn’t know which way to go. I wound up doing something I don’t do very often – I started thinking,” he laughed. “I was looking down and missed that first stop, but other than that he was really good. This horse was solid as can be. My coach and trainer Dan Huss is a perfectionist, and has done a great job with me and this horse.” NVR What A Lucky Joe, by Lil Joe Cash out of What A Lucky Hit, had a successful derby year, and Fulmer is looking forward to more. “He still has two years of eligibility left, so I’m looking forward to that. I plan to have him at most of the big derbies, including the
142
NRHA Derby in June. I also hope to do the Run for a Million in the non pro,” he shared. Kulmer shared how grateful he is for the people who help him. “I thank God first. He has blessed me with a lot of good horses and more than I deserve. I thank my trainer, Dan, and my wife for all her support.” He added a special thanks to a very important group – his grandchildren. “They are my biggest inspiration. They are amazing and a lot better athletes than I am. They keep me going.”

Dean Brown Clinches Mi The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is proud to officially congratulate NRHA Professional Dean Brown for crossing $1,000,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE).
Brown, who trains out of Santa Hill Ranch in Campbell, New York, has dedicated his career to the sport of reining. He got his start with horses at a young age when he worked alongside his father training horses on the family’s ranch in Ontario, Canada. Since then, Brown has remained an active NRHA member for more than 25 years, training horses, coaching riders, and competing in major events across the country. Notable wins from Brown’s extensive show history include: 1998 All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity Co-Championship on Dolls Skeeter 2003 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) fifth in Level (L) 4 Open and L3 Championship on Tinsel Nic 2007 NRHA Derby fifth in L4 Open on Boomtown Rocker 2011 NRHA Futurity 10th in L4 Open and fourth in L3 on Conquer The Spin 2015 NRBC ninth in L4 Open on The

Most recently, Brown’s 2019 Congress L4 Futurity reserve title and L3 win aboard SHR Sweet Sugar Joe pushed him past the million-dollar mark. As he reflects on the road to his milestone, Brown credits his parents, Brian and Elaine Brown; his family; his wife, Laura; Robert and Arlene Santagata, owners of Santa Hill Ranch; and the many equine athletes he’s had the privilege to ride. “A lot of my early horses came to me through my parents. I’m thankful for my wife, Laura, and my family’s support, too,” Brown shares. “Robert and Arlene have given me the opportunity to ride and train some very nice horses. They let me do my job.” With just over a million in LTE to date, Brown has no plans of slowing down—he’s already shooting for the next milestone. “We have some really cool horses here at Santa Hill,” Brown reveals. “I’ll just keep on working for that two million dollars.”
Congratulations to Brown on this outstanding achievement!

Larcombe & Kulmer Win Adequan® NAAC On Tuesday, the longest day at the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship featured 98 stellar non pro riders competing to earn titles in a multitude of classes. In the end, McKinnon Larcombe and Morris Kulmer each managed to win more than one division.
to $6,379. As for prizes, Larcombe got several, including two saddles from Bob’s Custom Saddles, Adequan® champion vests, Platinum Performance jackets, two Montana Silversmiths trophy buckles, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and SmartPak, as well as Classic Equine product.
McKinnon Larcombe & Designed With Shine Take Adequan® NAAC Non Pro & Int. Non Pro Championships
Designed With Shine is owned by Larcombe’s aunt Shauna Larcombe. “First and foremost, I thank my aunt Shauna. She’s the one who lets me show this mare, and without her, I wouldn’t be mounted on such a great horse. I also thank my parents. They pay for everything, and without them, I wouldn’t be here,” she said. “Of course, I thank everyone at the barn – the whole Larcombe team and the Sterling Ranch crew.”
When McKinnon Larcombe and Designed With Shine enter the arena, people notice. That’s because the team, although they only began competing together earlier this year, have racked up several big wins in their short time together. Earlier this week, they won the Adequan® NAAC Reserve Championship in the Limited Non Pro, and followed that victory with titles in the Adequan® NAAC Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro today. “This is amazing. It’s the cherry on top for me. She’s been wonderful all year – so consistent time and time again. For her to come here and finish off strong like this, well, I couldn’t be happier,” Larcombe, who competes in the South Central Region in the Southwest Reining Horse Association, said following the awards ceremony. “She was fantastic earlier in the week in the Limited Non Pro, and even more so today.” Larcombe and Designed With Shine, by Smart And Shiney out of Taris Designer Genes, marked a 220 in today’s class – a half-point higher than their Limited Non Pro run. “My dad (NRHA Professional Martin Larcombe) rode her a little bit since we showed on Friday. I was a little concerned I was getting in her way a bit, but when I went in today, I did so with the mentality of just showing like I always do – nice and easy,” Larcombe explained. Not only did the two win the NAAC titles, they also won the ancillary classes that ran concurrently, bringing the day’s take 154
“It’s so exciting. You’re running for a saddle and a big trophy, and it’s a prestigious thing for the riders and older horses. The fact that it’s ran with the Futurity, too, gives the NAAC an overall excited atmosphere. I appreciate how big of a deal NRHA makes about this because it gives people that aren’t in the Futurity something to run for,” Larcombe said. “Ever since we have moved to the United States it has been a goal of mine to have that one horse that could go in there and have a good chance of winning. I’ve been working at it a while and been close, so to win this now is amazing.”
Finishing with the Reserve Championship in the Adequan® NAAC Non Pro was Kirstin Booth and Babys Got Blue Eyes. The pair marked a 217, which also earned them second in the ancillary division and a check totaling $2,427. The pair also won an Adequan® vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and Platinum Performance, and product from SmartPak and Classic Equine. Babys Got Blue Eyes, a 7-year-old mare, is by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of One Stylish Chic. Ariana Dejong and her horse White Chocolat Chunk won second in the Adequan® NAAC Intermediate Non Pro and finished third in the ancillary Intermediate Non Pro with a 215.5. They also placed in both Non Pro classes, for earnings exceeding $3,088, as well as great prizes including an Adequan® vest, a Platinum Performance jacket, a custom Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates to Bluebonnet and Platinum Performance, and product from SmartPak and Classic Equine. White Chocolat Chunk, a 14-year-old gelding, is by Chocolate Chic Olena out of Meadow Jac. Taking second in the Intermediate Non Pro ancillary class was Alexia Tordoff and Blue Collar Tag with a 216. The second place finish was worth $1,154. Blue Collar Tag, an 11-yearold gelding owned by Wild Oats Farm LLC, is by Whiz N Tag Chex out of Kachina Oak Olena.

Josh Murphy and CBKtinseltownsparty Win NRHA Honorable Mention Futurity Riders not advancing to the finals had the option of entering the $1,000 Added Honorable Mention Futurity, and CBKtinseltownsparty and Josh Murphy were victorious. The pair marked a 217.5 to top the class and get a bit of redemption. “We call her Hazel. She’s by Gunners Tinseltown out of HR Wright On Cash. I’ve ridden several of her siblings, and they’ve all been a joy to ride,” Murphy shared. “We had some bad luck in the first go, and felt like we left some stuff on the table, so we brought her back today, and I feel like we redeemed ourselves.” Murphy noted that the mare really showed her true colors in the Honorable Mention Futurity. “She was really honest for me. She ran hard and turned big like I know she can. It all came together today,” he said. “I thank Bill and Corliss Kellogg, Kalyn Sanders, and my whole group.” Taking second in the Honorable Mention Futurity was Keiran Moses and FM Lovely Nite with a 212. FM Lovely Nite, by Gunners Special Nite and out of Lovely Colonel, is owned by Cameron Halliwell.
