Art of the Cowgirl Return By Doreen Shumpert

Art of the Cowgirl, the premier event for female Western artists to showcase their craftsmanship, showmanship and horsemanship, returns to Arizona January 19-23, 2022 and will be held at Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek.

Truly a family event for all ages, there is something for everybody in five action-packed days celebrating both cowgirl and Western heritage. Founded by prominent horsewoman and clinician Tammy Pate, the mission remains "to encourage and assist emerging artists of the western genre, and to celebrate cowgirls and their artistic contributions to western lifestyle." In support of this vision, The Fellowship Program was established "to continue education in traditional cowgirl trades to keep these traditions alive," according to Pate. "The Fellowship Program is our original dream and basis for the Art of the Cowgirl event. The Fellowship provides an opportunity for Western artists to work with masters—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn or refine their passion with some of the most talented makers in the business. Whether it be a fine art, functional trade, or horsemanship, these fellowships will enrich, empower and educate while honoring our Western heritage," she explains. "The Fellowship seeks to remove obstacles such as funding and access for up and coming artists, without restriction of age or location." Recipients are chosen by committee, and will spend one to two weeks sponsored in full at the Master's home. Masters for 2022 include some legends in the business: Shorty Koger, Hat Making; Wilson Capron, Guest Master Bit Maker; Deborah Copenhaver Fellows, Fine Artist; Cara Brewer, Master Horsewoman; Lari Dee Guy, Master Horsewoman, and Karen Lamontagne, Master Saddle Maker. Fellowship opportunities are partially funded by workshops available at each Art of the Cowgirl event. This year's lineup of classes includes: Silversmith Workshop with Amy Raymond and Jill Latno-Yamate; Western Writer’s Workshop with Joni Harms and Olivia Harms; Chink Building with Chelsea Sazama; Rawhide Braiding—Make a Bosal with Teresa and Bill Black; Videography Workshop with Natalie McFarland; Photography Retreat with Kimberly Beer and Phyllis Burchett ; Moccasin Making with Kelly Martin; Horsemanship with Lee Smith; Cutting with Lindy Burch; Stock Dog Clinic with Robin Brown; and Breakaway Roping with Lari Dee Guy, Hope Thompson and Donene Taylor. Other events in the action packed weekend include a spectacular trade show; live entertainment stages and concerts; the Fellowship Live Art Auction presented by Art of the West; the All Women's Ranch Rodeo presented by Cowgirl magazine; the Elite Horse and Cow Dog Sale, presented by Western Horseman and featuring cowgirl-made using horses; a breakaway roping competition presented by Merck Animal Health; and the spectacular World's Greatest Horsewoman competition. Numerous other presenters and horsemanship demonstrations are also scheduled. For information on the Fellowship Program, events, workshops, the Elite Horse Sale, or competitions, entries and tickets please visit artofthecowgirl.com. 28

Albuquerque, New Mexico – The World Series of Team Roping (WSTR) converged in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Ariat WSTR Finale XV, Dec. 4-11, 2021. For eight days ropers from around the world competed at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center for more than $14 million in cash and prizes. After the 2020 cancellation due to COVID-19, ropers returned with the same enthusiasm as they have for the last 15 years. Champions were crowned in eight major Finale divisions from the Open down to the #8.5. Friday, Dec. 10, marked the richest divisional roping in history when the #9.5 Ariat WSTR Finale XV paid out $2.26 million dollars plus prizes. Bud Swagel, from Dewey, Arizona, and Mike Foster, of San Tan Valley, Arizona, roped four steers in 35.65 seconds to finish first in the average, worth $352,000 cash payout. "I’m not a guy who goes and makes 6- or 7-second runs,” Swagel said. “I told myself, ‘Just go out and go to your spot.’ Once we made the short round, I decided I wasn’t going to let any of this this bother me—not the money, nothing. I’m going to go out there and rope every steer, look at my spot and handle my cattle. I had turned three steers in the #10.5 [Finale,] so I was confident in that. “The money is great,” Swagel added. “But winning this with Mike, the memories, that’s what this is all about.” This year’s Ariat WSTR Finale added three more qualifying divisions for ropers to nab 2022 Finale spots and bank more money than ever while in Las Vegas. The additional lineup included a $192,000 #13.5 Ariat Heartland and a $223,200 #11.5 Ariat Heartland. Lastly, the #14.5 Bloomer Qualifier Series division was the first of its kind—designed to pair a higher-fees event with the high caliber of the Bloomer brand—and it paid out some $123,000, including a first-place check of $28,000 to Montana’s Miles Kobold and Texas’s John Folmer for their time of 28.54 seconds on four head. “We kicked the Bloomer Roping series off in Las Vegas to highlight the quality of the roping we aspire to create,” Ty Yost, WSTR president, said. “Going forward, any producer can have one Bloomer Roping per event, and that producer can designate which division that is. It’s a high-quality product for ropers in every division, with higher fees and a higher reward. Over the course of the last two years, team roping has remained a constant—a sport that can thrive and adapt even in the toughest of times. Thousands of amateur team ropers once again vied for incredible payouts and recreational ropers from many walks of life filled their pockets—already looking forward to converging once again for the Ariat WSTR Finale XVI in in Las Vegas, Dec 3-11, 2022. About the WSTR: For the past 15 seasons World Series of Team Roping has strived to provide personal service to a small but influential group of ropers who share our philosophy of easier, smaller and richer ropings. It is our goal to continue improving our service to this elite group. For more information on the WSTR or 32

The real-deal when it comes to understand horses, Brandi Lyons carries on with the most trusted name in the horse industry. “Growing up with ‘America’s Most Trusted

Horseman’, John Lyons was an amazing blessing. He taught me so much, introduced me to so many amazing horse trainers and legends, and provided me many different types of horses to ride in all disciplines” says Brandi. Brandi’s success and popularity is based on a simple but seldom practiced philosophy her father pioneered decades ago; love and respect the horses and their owners! Brandi teaches that you need to have a strong foundation in understanding how to communicate with a horse and then be willing to think outside of the box, work hard, be honest and mostly have fun! Then, success with the horses comes naturally. Over the last 24 years, she has become admired and respected by horse owners and enthusiasts from around the country. Brandi will show you that with some understanding and a little bit of work you can do anything with your horse. The Lyons’ conditioned response training methods teach people how to work with their horses using gentle training methods, earning the horses respect while creating a safe and willing partner. She is great at showing you a step by step approach to achieve any goal that you have either in her clinics or through her virtual programs. Brandi shares her life with her husband, JD. They have raised five beautiful daughters. They enjoy spending their time with their bulldogs and horses. Learn more about Brandi Lyons at www. LyonsNoLimits.com. Proven champion horseman, Mike Major claims, “To me,

the Road to the Horse competition is an amazing event that brings horsemen and women together from a variety of disciplines to showcase each one’s unique ability to prepare young horses. It’s about preparing these colts to go on and become the best horses they can be in their chosen discipline,” Mike Major stated. “Road to the Horse takes this knowledge and shares it with the rest of the world and that’s why I’m honored to participate in this coveted event.” Mike Major has a long list of accomplishments—a reflection of his dedication to his training program. In 2006, Mike Major rode Smart Whiskey Doc to a Working Cowhorse World Championship at the AQHA Select World Championship Show. Then, in 2009 and 2010, he and the stallion won the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Open World Championship, along with the first-ever Battle in the Saddle Ranch Remuda Challenge. Major then rode Black Hope Stik, a daughter of Smart Whiskey Doc, to win the 2010 Project Cowboy and the 2012 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Open World Championship. Major and his wife, Holly, operate their training facility in Bowie, Texas. The couple continually strive to build and improve their horse program, aiming to produce top-quality horses in the performance and ranching industry. Although horses are a huge part of the Major’s operations, the ranch is a working cattle ranch. Every year, Mike and Holly Major operate a large yearling cattle operation on the Flying A Ranch and on the Rio Puerco Ranch in Belen, New Mexico. Like the horses, the cattle have always been a main component of all the ranches. Learn more about Mike Major at www.MikeMajorHorsemanship.com.

USDA Loan Guarantee Program to Create More Market Opportunities

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced USDA is deploying $100 million under the new Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program to make available nearly $1 billion in loan guarantees; these loan guarantees will back private investment in processing and food supply infrastructure that will strengthen the food supply chain for the American people. USDA is making the funding available through the American Rescue Plan Act. The program is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to address food system challenges dating back decades and further exacerbated by the COVID-19 36

pandemic. These investments will help essential processing and supply chain infrastructure that will ultimately deliver more opportunities and fairer prices for farmers, they will give people greater access to healthier foods, and they will help eliminate bottlenecks in the food supply chain. “The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities and created extreme disruptions in America’s food supply chain. The reduction in meat processing capacity is just one example of the supply chain bottlenecks that affect small and midsize farmers,” Vilsack said.

Clayton Edsall Newest Member

in the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Club

It was a banner year for reined cow horses with multiple milestones crossed, at the 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, Clayton Edsall became the newest Million Dollar Rider to join the elite club. At the Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat, Edsall made the Open Finals at the event, needing only $5,000 in earnings to push his lifetime total over the mark. He earned $10,000 in the Finals and finished the year with $1,016,157.75. While the cows weren’t cooperative during his Finals run, the inarena announcement of his milestone had the crowd on their feet in the Will Rogers Coliseum.

Edsall, originally from Montana, recently moved his training operation from Oakdale, California, to Mineral Wells, Texas. His roots run deep in horses, where he started evolving his horsemanship riding ranch-raised horses in Montana. Today, he counts every major NRCHA premier event championship title to his résumé, bar the Snaffle Bit Futurity. “My success started in the bridle and went backwards, really,” Edsall, 41, said. “I started [my premier event earnings] winning the World’s Greatest Horseman on Skeets Oak Peppy in the bridle, then won the Stallion Stakes, won the Derby then Hackamore Classic. Now, it would be sure fun to win the 3-year-old Futurity. I just got to thinking about that and it seems a lot of times it goes the other way, but I’ve gone from bridle to snaffle with my wins. Most of those horses that I’ve won on are still showing—Metallic Train, Bet He Sparks, Bet Hesa Boon and Skeets Oak Peppy.” And, they all helped Edsall to achieve the million-dollar mark. His biggest paycheck has come aboard Metallic Train (Metallic Cat x Sparking Train x Shining Spark), owned by Beverly Servi, with $35,471 for first place in the 2018 NRCHA Stallion Stakes. The mare has amassed $172,250 in NRCHA earnings with Edsall, and along with the K&L Phillips-owned stallion Bet He Sparks (Bet Hesa Cat x Sparking Train x Shining Spark) that carried Edsall to a $30,173.69 payday at the 2019 NRCHA Derby and to more than $187,000 in NRCHA earnings, have been big factors in achieving this honor. For Edsall, part of his measure of success is not only picking up the wins, but watching the horses he has trained continue to

compete and have long careers. “Some of the horses I’ve done good on, but I’m not still showing them, they are still going,” he said. “There were four horses I had a part in training in the World’s Greatest last year and that is special to me, important to me. If you do your homework and keep a horse sound, not only physically but mentally, it is great to watch a horse go on and be successful. That means a lot to me.” First and foremost, Edsall thanks his wife, Chelsea, he says, for not only being his wife and biggest supporter but also for being a great partner helping in his horse business. The backing of his parents, all of Edsall’s clients and customers that trusted him with their horses, and the support of his late brother, Roy, have all had a hand in helping him in his career. “When I was getting started [training horses] I was around a guy, Tink Elordi, who would harp on me about how it didn’t matter what you put on a horse’s face but it was about how you use your feet, ride Clayton Edsall with your body and the energy you put out,” said Edsall. “That has been a huge focus for me and been a positive in the older horses. I wasn’t raised in the industry and throughout my career, fellow trainers have helped me learn, whether they knew it or not. Watching someone else warm a horse up, bouncing ideas off each other, it is so valuable and helpful.” It takes a lot of support to keep a training operation running flawlessly, and Edsall recognizes the efforts from not only his family and customers, but also all of the veterinarians and farriers that help his horses get the job done in the show pen.“Dr. Marty Gardner of Western Performance Equine, Dr. Joe Carter of Oklahoma Equine, our farriers, the staff and so many more people help keep us going,” he said. “I’m humbled and appreciative of everyone that has helped me and the horses along the way.” Edsall becomes the 21st rider in the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Club. “Earning a spot in the Million Dollar Rider ranks at NRCHA is a life’s effort for many of our professionals,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “We couldn’t be happier for Clayton and the team surrounding him for achieving this milestone.”

Cave Creek Equine Installs Standing MRI

Sports medicine is a well-established human medical discipline from which many athletes and weekend warriors’ benefit. But a growing trend is emerging in Arizona: veterinary sports medicine for horses.

Phoenix-based Cave Creek Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery is amongst the leaders in veterinary sports medicine, offering horse-owners specialty vet care for injuries associated with many equine disciplines including the western performance industry, show jumping, dressage, racing and polo. A unique team: With the only board-certified Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation practitioners in the state, the practice has three veterinarians uniquely experienced to offer the gold-standard in lameness diagnosis and between them, they share impressive credentials: Dr. Martin Vidal, BVSc, MS, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR is Boardcertified in Equine Surgery as well as Board-certified in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Dr. Lea Walker, DVM, DACVSMR is Board-certified in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Diplomate ACVSMR) Dr. Fabio Aristizabal, DVM, MS, DACVS is a Board-certified Equine Surgery Specialist and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons As Dr. Walker explains, “The American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation’s focus is everything including the workup through treatments and rehabilitation to get the horse back to its original form and sport. Accurate diagnosis is key to that process”. Introducing unique technology: With special horses comes the need for unique technology to diagnose and pinpoint problems. Cave Creek Equine recently purchased a Standing Equine MRI system from Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging to complement its other lameness diagnostic tools. Diagnostic in over 90% of lameness cases, this goldstandard modality aids informed treatment decisions to provide owners more definitive information on prognosis and their horse’s ability to return to work. Dr. Walker, who has previous experience working with the Hallmarq standing MRI system, joined Cave Creek Equine to add her expertise to the practice: “I started working with Hallmarq’s Standing Equine MRI back in 2008 and came to appreciate the ease of use and safety aspects of the system. In addition, Hallmarq offers a modular installation option; we were able to drop in a completed system, set it on a concrete slab, connect to Internet and power – and start scanning immediately. We did at least two MRIs every day for the first two weeks. It was nice knowing that the second it hit the ground, we were able to get good diagnostic quality images from the outset.” Walker added, “For us, the most important reason why Cave Creek is specialized more so than others, is that we are able 50

to diagnose some of the more complicated problems with the diagnostic tools we have, including nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) and dynamic endoscopy, in addition to the standing MRI and others”.

Combining knowledge and expertise:

Dr. Vidal stressed the importance of combining the knowledge of equine sports medicine with the familiarity and expertise in acquiring MRI images, and use of MRI technology, as a crucial modality to provide better outcomes for horse owners. “Every sport has different demands. Having specialized training and experience helps the challenging process of detecting subtle nuances in each equine athlete. Each equestrian discipline places different demands on the horse’s body” said Dr. Vidal. “These horses suffer different types and frequencies of injuries in certain regions of limbs, like the carpus and fetlock, particularly prone to injury in racehorses for example, whereas the hoof, coffin joint and navicular region, are ubiquitously affected, regardless of the discipline.” “It is very important for a sports medicine practice to have solid, high-quality imaging. Cave Creek Equine has been a leader in MRI imaging for many years throughout the valley. Now, with the addition of the Hallmarq standing MRI, the quality of the standing images that we’ve produced since Lea joined the team are in line with the exceptional quality of the other imaging we currently offer. The

exceptional image quality produced by our practice has been recognized by the radiology community which routinely review and interpret our MRI images.” Walker states, “Hallmarq’s Standing MRI provides us with a unique modality which benefits both the practice and the horse owner and most importantly, the horse.” MRI can show problems that are not visible with any other imaging method and is highly valuable at detecting injuries at an earlier stage. Standing MRI only requires the patient to have very light sedation, there is no anesthesia required. This reduces risk of injury and in certain cases may make it easier for a client to say “yes” than to the conventional ‘down’ MRI, which Cave Creek Equine has been using for years. MRI involves no radiation, unlike CT, bone scan or radiography. Ensuring Patient Safety: Dr. Walker agrees that one of the big selling points of the Hallmarq Standing Equine MRI is that it allows for the horse to be diagnosed without anesthesia and is therefore without risk to the patient. “There was a 2020 study by Byrne and coworkers in the Equine Veterinary Journal*, which compared the quality and diagnostic capability of a standing low-field versus an anesthetized low-field system, and those results give me confidence to say that the images we get from the Hallmarq system are of comparable quality to the already existing ‘down’ MRI. Because we don’t need to anesthetize the horse, some horse owners may prefer this method.” She also noted that the exceptional support received from the Hallmarq team throughout the process is unmatched by other suppliers, in her experience. “Hallmarq stands by their customers with their Q-Care program, and they go way beyond just supplying a good product.”

Teton Ridge Teams Up With Trailblazing Barrel Racing Champions

By Mandi McCary

As western culture brand Teton Ridge continues to blaze trails in preserving and elevating America’s western way of life and classic western sports, the dedicated entity announced today that dynamic barrel racing champions Sherry Cervi, Lisa Lockhart, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and Hailey Kinsel will join TEAM:TR.

The skilled quartet of athletes will add to the already robust TEAM:TR collection of champion athletes and ambassadors that spans multiple disciplines in the western space. Earlier this year Teton Ridge welcomed extraordinary talent in the reining and reined cow horse disciplines when announcing accomplished horsemen Andrea Fappani, Corey Cushing and Todd Bergen as the inaugural representatives of TEAM:TR. “Teton Ridge is a brand built around the core values of America’s western culture," said Teton Ridge Sports Executive Vice President Ellen Newberg. “TEAM:TR is a fundamental component of our sports strategy; celebrating and elevating the remarkable athletes, whose pursuit of excellence and embodiment of champion-caliber mentality through their journey of hard work, sacrifice and dedication to their sport, make the events we all love possible. The innovative TEAM:TR approach creates a platform for athletes from different disciplines to work together in order to strengthen and broaden western sports on a global level.” Recognized as one of the top competitors in barrel racing and possessing four world titles, Sherry Cervi’s (Marana, Arizona) professional career has spanned just under 30 years and resulted in an industry-leading nearly $3.5 million in earnings. Rocketing onto the rodeo leaderboards early in her career, she collected her first Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Reserve World Champion title in 1994. From there Cervi’s list of astounding accolades has included being a 19-time Wrangler National Finals (WNFR) qualifier, clinching an impressive four world titles (1995/ 1999/ 2010/ 2013), winning the WNFR average Champion three different times and being a 13-time qualifier for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo (RNCFR). Whether competing in the arena or working with her horses, Cervi attributes her success to hard work and a laser-like focus. Showcasing that same resounding focus on success, Lisa Lockhart (Oelrichs, South Dakota) began riding horses at the mere age of six and has made her mark on the western sports world ever since. Beginning her professional barrel racing career in 1993 when she joined the WPRA, the accomplished athlete has to date earned more than $2.8 million in the arena. Lockhart has qualified for the WNFR 15 times over the years. Additionally, she is a two-time Reserve World Champion, two-time 52

WNFR average Champion, four-time Canadian Champion, 2019 RNCFR and has won the richest single-day rodeo in the world The American - twice thus far in her still exceptionally prosperous career. Her consistency in finishing among the Top 5 in the world standings year after year, added to her knowledge, athleticism and extreme equine prowess makes Lockhart a perfect addition to TEAM:TR. A native Texan, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi (Lampasas, Texas) learned the intricacies of running barrels from her father at a very young age and has showcased the same passion and dedication every moment since. Splashing onto the rodeo scene soon after becoming the barrel racing champion of both the Texas High School Finals and National High School Rodeo Association in 2002, Pozzi secured the title of 2003 College Southern Region champion during her time at Texas A&M University. Soon after she won the 2003 WPRA Rookie

Powerhouse quartet of Sherry Cervi, Lisa Lockhart, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and Hailey Kinsel to elevate TEAM:TR of the Year title for barrels and became the first-ever rookie in the WPRA standings to qualify for the WNFR, finishing seventh in the world. Currently sitting in the No. 9 spot in the world standings for 2021, Pozzi is no stranger to topping the leaderboard in all she does. The two-time world champion (2007/2009) has collected many accolades over the years including being a 15-time WNFR qualifier, two-time WNFR average champion, two-time RNCFR Champion and much more.

With career earnings topping over $2.6 million Pozzi strives for excellence each time she rides into an arena.

Fellow Texan, Hailey Kinsel (Cotula, Texas) has sought the same level of distinction since her professional career debut in 2015. As one of the most talked-about young athletes over the past decade, her superior athletic ability is equally matched by her knowledge and exquisite display of horsemanship. Sitting in the No. 1 spot in the world standings as 2021 rolls to a close, Kinsel and famed equine partner “Sister” have genuinely set a new bar in the barrel racing community. With more than $2 million in career earnings, Kinsel has qualified for WNFR five times, holds three world titles (2018, 2019, 2020), was the 2020 WNFR Average Champion and was the event champion at The American a record three times. Known for her dedication and drive both in the arena and out, Kinsel spends her time when not competing training her horses - a passion she shares with her mother. Teton Ridge will further expand TEAM:TR to feature additional disciplines including top-caliber professionals in the cutting industry, roughstock disciplines and more.

Gunners Special Nite is Now an NRHA $5 Million Sire

Less than a year after his offspring passed four million dollars in earnings, Gunners Special Nite has made it to the next level of National Reining Horse Association Million Dollar milestones. That makes the flashy sorrel one of only nine sires in history to cross the $5 Million threshold.

Bred by Kim and Debra Sloan and raised by Tim and Colleen McQuay, the son of NRHA 13 Million Dollar Sire out of Mifs Doll (by Mifillena) was later purchased by Turnabout Farm, Inc. NRHA Professional Marcy Starr and

NRHA Million Dollar Rider and Owner Tom McCutcheon rode him to over $219,000 in earnings by way of an NRHA Futurity Reserve Championship and top finishes at other major events. In 2010, McCutcheon piloted the 2004 stallion to Individual and Team gold medals for Team USA at the 2010 World Equestrian

NRHA Futurity Open Res. Champion Gunners Special Nite & Marcy Starr

Games. With such a show presence and pedigree, his strength as a sire was predictable and he has delivered a pattern of excellence. McCutcheon noted, “Great mindedness and consistency are what he passes on to his foals – along with the physical ability. With top open horses like NRBC Champion Modern Gun and NRHA Futurity Reserve Champion Guns And Dynamite leading the way, his foals have carried him to this incredible siring level.” Gunners Special Nite’s 462 foals have average earnings of $10,854. Standing Equine Leg CT debuted at 2021 AAEP Convention

Hallmarq Advanced Veterinary Imaging will showcase its latest product—Standing Equine Leg CT (sICT system utilizes a unique dual-concentric ring design that allows the detector plate to remain close to the area of interest, thus optimizing image quality. Hallmarq is also among the few companies to also include motion correction technology to ensure high-quality, clear images in the standing patient. In addition, Advanced cone beam (CB) technology collects high resolution, 3D images in just 60 seconds, by moving in concentric circles around the leg, according to the release. Sub-millimeter resolution makes CB technology ideal for fine bony detail essential in distal limb imaging and ideal for analyzing pathology in bony structures. Though sICT is new to the United States, it has been through development and in clinical use in the United Kingdom since early 2021 and is already advantaging involved practices. "The standing leg cone-beam CT system from Hallmarq provides a safe and convenient diagnostic modality to help produce a definitive diagnosis, and guide the best treatment plan for equine patients. It also provides us with a valuable complementary tool in surgical planning when used in conjunction with our standing MRI," said Jonathan Dixon, BVetMed, MVetMed, DECVDI, MRCVS, European specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, and radiologist from Rainbow Equine Hospital in the UK. “The system was very straightforward to install and has a simple-to-use interface," he added. "Quick acquisition time and fine bone detail make surgical planning much easier.” While using the sICT, the horse handler remains in the room throughout the process, positioned behind lead shielding to ensure

56

patient safety. The open, low, flat platform allows easy entry and exit for the sedated patient. Since the patient is sedated and not anesthetized, any risk involving anesthesia is elimated when using this patented CT scanner, thus promoting peace of mind for the horse owner. What's more, the compact system offers equine practices with access to rapid 3D imaging for enhanced evaluation of daily lameness cases. It provides safe, convenient and affordable advanced imaging for the standing, sedated horse—aligning with its mission to improve the lives of animals and the people who care for them. Further, it comes with comprehensive system support backed by Q-Care—Hallmarq’s unique customer care program created to assist veterinarians with advanced imaging. “Our sICT system creates an incredible business opportunity for equine veterinarians, who can now offer advanced imaging to more horse owners,” said Mick Crosthwaite, CEO of Hallmarq. “Profitability can be achieved in as few as 10 cases per month.” Indivduals attending AAEP can hear Dixon’s positive experiences using the Standing Equine Leg CT, plus also talk with key members of Hallmarq’s executive team responsible for its creation and launch: Mick Crosthwaite – CEO Jos Belgrave, BVSc, MRCVS – Former Hallmarq CEO and current non-exec board member/director Nick Bolas, D. The National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) in support of the NSBA Foundation today announced a 3-year commitment from the Bob and Ingrid Miller Family of Mesa, Arizona that will allow NSBA to bring the Heroes on Horses program to a new venue in the Western United States hosted as part of the 20222024 Sun Circuit Quarter Horse show in Scottsdale, AZ.

This donation is an important milestone to meeting the goal to establish and expand the outreach to Veterans beyond its current format at the NSBA World Championship Show and All-American Quarter Horse Congress. "It is our vision that this financial support will bring additional awareness to the “Model of Inclusion” the NSBA

HEROES ON HORSES

embodies by including Veterans who participate in therapeutic riding programs across the country. My husband, Bob, & I feel this is a small way our family can say thank you to the brave men and women whose service and sacrifice allows us the freedom to enjoy and love our show horses" said Ingrid Miller, exhibitor, and lifetime member of the NSBA. As part of the NSBA Equestrians with Disabilities division (EWD), the Heroes on Horses program is a catalyst for recognition and thanks to our military service men and women who ride and compete. Having a third venue for the event will allow for: • Inclusion and recognition

of the families and heroes who have so valiantly served our

country, • Bring attention to the therapeutic value of the horse and interaction with this population of riders,

0%

• Highlight the value of a competitive platform where Veterans can be recognized for advancing their horsemanship and riding skill sets and • Raise awareness of the benefits of our sport as part of a wellness program for Veterans. “Today there is great hope that the future of the business of showing horses and including riders of all abilities will continue to flourish. Our association can lead the way to build healthy, vibrant relationships while providing a platform to recognize skill levels and growth of all our riders who share the common love and respect that the horse brings to us all,” said Stephanie Lynn, Executive Director of NSBA. Heroes on Horses is funded as a special project of the NSBA Foundation. For more information on the NSBA Foundation contact Foundation Director Lynn Campbell at lcampbell@nsba.com or www. nsba.com. MAN

Just released on Amazon

The Storyteller

The storyline… How does an innocent eighteen year old former altar boy and devout Roman Catholic morph into a deadly deep-black government assassin, by the time he is nineteen? Proceeding over the next two decades to carry out some of the most high profile assassinations , massacres and disappearances of our times - his first sanctioned kill being one of the most well know and revered personalities in the world ?

Answer ——

When denial, anger and grief lead not to acceptance but rather to guilt, vengeance and self destruction. Walk the path of a truly troubled soul - follow along as a man - code name “NewMex” - loses himself in alcohol, drugs, sex , violence and danger - to bury the deep-seated guilt and confusion that has lead him into a world where murder and mayhem are not only justified, but rewarded by a mysterious being known as THE KEEPER. Who trains him to become the deadliest assassin on earth. Then gives him a cause that makes it all “for the good of mankind”. That cause ? “PATRIOTISM “ Is he ? A patriot… ? Or is he just a high dollar assassin ? And who__or what__is THE KEEPER ? You decide - enjoy your journey into “THE SOUL OF A MAN” 62

Jim Eagle, an entrepreneur, inventor, stock speculator, “car guy,” poet, author, and weekend cowboy, lives in the shadows of Black Mountain, which looms over an old western mining town in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, called Cave Creek. Jim is well aquatinted with shadows, for he has spent the last fifty years of his life living in the shadows . . . of anger, guilt, and self-analysis.

The Backstory…

“When you lose a child, you lose yourself.”

THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

2021 The Run For A Million Champion Won $500,000 in the Run-Off Against Flarida!

Kole Price NRHA’s Newest Million Dollar Rider With the airing of the December 17, 2021 episode of The Last Cowboy on the Paramount Network, reining fans around the globe were able to watch history be made at The Run For A Million presented by Teton Ridge. Although the event was held August 21, a media embargo meant fans had to wait to learn who the winner was until the final episode of The Last Cowboy aired. In a run-off for the Championship, Kole Price bested NRHA Six Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida for his first premier event win and accompanying check for $500,000. That historic paycheck pushed Price to more than one million dollars in lifetime earnings. “Being a million-dollar rider has always been one of my biggest goals. The way I see it, that achievement puts you in an elite class of trainers,” he said. “It’s a blessing to have it happen so fast. My mentality has always been that if I thought I could do something, I’d just go as hard as I can to see if I could get it done quicker.” So what was it like for Price to watch the most pivotal moment of his career play out on the hit show? “It was very incredible because I knew there were a lot of people outside the horse world who now know how special that event is. I think I was so caught up in the moment while I was there that I didn’t get to fully enjoy it because I was so worn out, so getting to watch it and relive it was really special,” he shared. It was a rapid rise to the top for Price, whose first reining earnings were recorded in 2009, when he piloted SLJ Hope Hes Smart (Smart Like Juice x Navahope) to a fourth-place finish in the Limited Open at Minnesota’s Winona Horse Show. The check was less than $38, but it was the building block for a career that now includes titles at several major events, including the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby, and the National Reining Breeders Classic. Price, who grew up in Illinois, showed Percherons until he was around 10 years old, and began training outside horses at 13. It was when he saw a video of NRHA Twelve Million Dollar Sire and earner of more than $185,000, Wimpys Little Step (who had been trained and shown by Flarida) that Price became a fan of reining. In his drive to learn more about the sport, Price secured an internship during his high school and college years with NRHA Professionals Brent Loseke and Mike Davis. He then spent five years with NRHA Professional Gabe Hutchins before starting his own business in 2015. It was at the 2018 NRHA Futurity that Price qualified all three of his entries back to the Level 4 Finals. Capitalizing on that success, he finished as the L4 Open Reserve Champion on Isnt She Perfect (Walla Walla Whiz x Miss SIlvergun) for total earnings of $130,352. Then came Gunna Stop (Gunnatrashya x Stop Little Sister), owned by Amber Gokey. With fellow NRHA Professional Austin Roush at the reins, the talented colt had won more than $70,000 at 64

the 2018 NRHA Futurity across Open Levels 1–4. Price began showing the stallion in 2019, earning an L4 Open Reserve Championship at the High Roller Reining Classic. In 2020, the pair continued their winning ways, taking the L3 Open Championship at the NRHA Derby for $22,303. In 2021, the pair qualified for The Run For A Million at the Cactus Reining Classic. The Run For A Million Championship earned Gunna Stop a place in the history books as the highest-earning horse of all time at $672,762. “Growing up I would watch horses like Wimpys Little Step and Wimpys Little Chic, and it was just a dream that I’d get to ride horses like that and have a horse win that much. To have it happen … that hasn’t really set in yet,” he said. “The way everything happened, all together, it’s like I checked off a lot of items on the checklist all at once.” Price’s lifetime earnings as 2021 draws to a close are $1,111,343, and he’s already looking ahead to the next million. “Long-term, I would love to be NRHA’s Leading Rider. I always want to be the best at whatever I do,” he said. “From day one, winning the NRHA Futurity has always been my main goal. I wake up at 5 a.m. each morning, and my ringtone is ‘Run for the Roses.’ That’s my inspiration every day – even those that I’m tired, worn out, and sore. I feel like if I can get an extra hour on everyone else, it will add up eventually.” Price thanked his wife Kelsey, the Gokey family, Gunna Stop, and Taylor Sheridan. He added a special thank you to the multitude of friends and family that traveled to Las Vegas to cheer him on. “I probably had 40 people from my hometown in Illinois who came out to support me. That was so special to me,” he said. Price’s top 10 wins include: 2021 The Run For A Million Championship (Gunna Stop) $500,000 2018 NRHA Futurity L4 Open Reserve Championship (Isnt She Perfect) - $130,352 2020 NRHA Derby L3 Open Championship (Gunna Stop) $22,303 2021 NRBC L4 Open 6th (Gunna Stop) - $21,000 2018 NRHA Futurity L4 Open 12th (KR Ima Trashya) - $20,392 2014 NRHA Futurity L3 Open Reserve Championship (FM Shine N Tag Chex) - $20,330 2021 NRBC L4 Open 9th (Trendsettter) - $15,500 2020 NRHA Futurity L3 Open Reserve Championship (Four Oh One K) - $14,619 2021 NRHA Derby Tamarack Ranch Open Stakes (Trendsettter) - $14,004 2020 NRBC L3 Open Reserve Championship (Gunna Stop) $12,978

On top of this, a more-than matching commitment of an additional $62,000 added from the NRCHA Board of Directors ensures a bigger payout for finalists from reserve on. Additionally, instead of the Top 10 being brought back for the ticketed World’s Greatest Horseman Finals, the Top 15 will ride for the prize. With the added purse, the NRCHA Board commits that those finishing 11th through 15th will earn at least $7,500. On top of this, the Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby will pay $30,000 to the Open champion. At the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes, held March 25-April 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Derby event will pay $50,000 to the Open champion in 2022, and the finalists riding for that prize increase from Top 20 to Top 25, plus ties, with places 21-25 earning at least $2,500. Also at the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes, the Non Pro Derby purse will pay $10,000 to the winner, an increase over the 2021 purse of approximately $8,000, with a $3,000 prize for the Level 1 Non Pro Derby winner (formerly the Amateur division). When the action begins at the DT Horses Western Derby June 1-12 in Scottsdale, Arizona, competitors in the Open Derby will ride for $50,000, a $10,000 increase over the 2021 purse. Instead of 20 riders, now there will be 25 finalists for that limited age event. Like the Stakes, the finalists placing 21st-25th will earn at least $2,500. The Non Pro Derby purse will pay

These documents detail the medical history of your horse and outline specific vaccinations, specialty procedures and competition-compliant inoculations. Not only is obtaining comprehensive records important for managing your horse’s health properly, but just as important is how we house and inventory these records. The security and validity of equine vaccinations is becoming increasingly important in the equestrian industry. Whether you are wanting documents for competition and travel compliance or are managing biosecurity and disease prevention, your records need to be accurate and safely stored. Plus, if you have more than one horse you will want to be absolutely sure you have proper and detailed equine health records for each. Traditionally, these paper documents would be requested from veterinarians, printed, and placed in folders or binders in order to produce when needed. However, in a digital age where paperless is an option and digital documents provide immediate access and accuracy, this is a more efficient way forward in managing horse health records. Secure Documents Equine medical files help guide veterinarians on our horse’s health, the same way doctors utilize our health care records when treating our own health. eVet’s software was developed with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant programming to ensure the highest degree of security and safety for medical data and records for your horse, verified and approved by accredited veterinarians. This ensures system integrity and accurate horse health care records and documentation each time. As horse owners we advocate for them in every way to provide them the very best in life, including boarding at an accredited stable, working with an accomplished trainer, selecting the best farrier and developing a detailed feed program, so it is only natural that the management and security of the medical documentation you obtain for your horse would be secure, accurate and easy to manage. 17,373 fans at the Thomas & Mack Center. Wright finished the season with a PRCA regular season record of $686,513. Wright won the all-around title with a record $585,850. He was the saddle bronc riding champ with $343,524. This was Wright's third allaround title in a row and he broke Trevor Brazile's PRCA record for most money won in a season at $518,011, which he accomplished in 2015. "I feel really good about it (breaking the record)," Wright said. "To break any record at all, it's special, and especially when it comes to Trevor (Brazile) because he is the best to do it. So, to break one of his records, it's pretty special." In saddle bronc riding, Wright had to have a bunch of the pieces of the puzzle come together in Round 10 and they did. Wright won Round 10 with a round-record tying ride of 93 points on Cervi Championship Rodeo's Vitalix Ricky Bobby. That earned him $26,997 and it pushed him to an eighthplace check in the average which earned him $6,532. The combination allowed him to edge his brother Ryder, the 2020 saddle bronc riding world champ, who finished the season with $342,337. "I'm not going to lie, when they told me I won it, I looked at Ryder and I said I came in here to play defense for you tonight," Stetson said. "I didn't know I even had a chance but I guess as long as there's still rounds there's always a chance."

related activities, volunteerism and more. A senior at Aledo High School, Gabrielle (above right) has shown Paint Horses for five years with the Texas Paint Horse Club. The Youth Member of the Year award is presented annually to a Youth member who supports the Paint breed while also being involved in community activities. Gabrielle receives a Gist Silversmith trophy buckle and a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by APHA. In addition, the Garden State Paint Horse Youth Club earned the AjPHA Youth Club of the Year and From the Heart Award. The New Jersey club demonstrated its commitment to building a strong Youth program in earning these two awards. They will be receiving $1,000 sponsored by APHA for the AjPHA Club of the Year award and $500 sponsored by Markel Insurance for the From the Heart Award. Each year, APHA conducts the Youth Member of the Year, Youth Club of the Year and the From the Heart Award contests to recognize Youth members and regional clubs for their community participation, leadership, promotion of APHA and more. Why it matters: APHA’s mission is to promote, preserve and provide meaningful experiences with Paint Horses. The winners of these awards are encouraging and fulfilling that mission to ensure the American Paint Horse is represented in their communities. PRORODEO HALL OF FAMER BARRY BURK PASSES AWAY

BY TRACY RENCK, PSN EDITOR

ProRodeo Hall of Fame tie-down roper Barry Burk passed away Dec. 16. He was 79. Burk, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1994 and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 18 times – 16 in tiedown roping (1964-77, 1979-80) and twice in steer wrestling (1963, 1969). He also competed as a team roping header at the 1968 NFR.

"He loved rodeo, he loved the rodeo way of life, and he loved the people who he got to be friends with and meet through rodeo," said Blair, Barry's son. "In the Burk family, rodeo is just a family tradition for us. My dad had a lot of good statements, and he loved his life and he loved rodeo life and he had a good time while he was here." Blair followed in his father's footsteps as a tie-down roper and is a 14-time qualifier for the NFR, 1995-2007 and 2009. Barry's father, Dee Burk, was a top-notch rodeo performer who taught him the intricacies of roping and rodeo. His uncle, Jiggs, was another standout roper and his uncle, Clyde, was a four-time tie-down roping world champion (1936, '38, '42, '44) who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1979 – the same year Clyde's horse, Baldy, was enshrined. Just how good was Barry Burk? Well, he's widely known as the best roper never to have won a gold buckle. From 1967 to 1975, Burk was a perennial contender for the tie-down roping world championship. He was second in the world standings from 1967-70, was third in 1971, second in 197273, third in 1974 and runnerup again in '75. He had also finished third in the world in 1964 at the age of 22. "I won second behind a lot of great ropers," said Burk, who also won the NFR average title in 1973, in an April 10, 2015, article in the ProRodeo Sports News. "Dean Oliver, Phil Lyne and Glen Franklin were winning gold buckles back then, and those guys are as great as they come. I was really close several times; I just didn't rope as good as they did." Burk came closest to winning a gold buckle in 1970, when he was $1,868 behind world champion Junior Garrison. Jeff Copenhaver beat him by $2,571 in 1975. continuted page 90

Countless well-known Quarter Horses – including Refrigerator, Easy Jet, Two Eyed Jack, Peppy San Badger and Clabber – can trace their ancestry back to one or more remount stallions. USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum Theme and Program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the theme and program of the 98th Agricultural Outlook Forum, a virtual event that will be held on February 24-25, 2022. The 2022 Forum theme is “New Paths to Sustainability and Productivity Growth” and the program will focus on innovations to minimize the environmental footprint of agriculture and ensure sustainability while improving crop yields. “If we are to produce enough to feed a growing global population while minimizing our environmental impacts, we must develop new ways to do things,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “I look forward to discussing with sector leaders how we can work on climate smart solutions that will improve the profitability and resilience of agricultural producers and open new market opportunities.” The Forum will begin with a presentation by USDA Chief Economist Seth Meyer on the Department’s outlook for U.S. commodity markets and trade for 2022 and the U.S. farm income situation. Secretary Vilsack will deliver the keynote address followed by a plenary panel of distinguished guest speakers. The

Forum program will also include 30 breakout sessions covering six key areas:

Climate mitigation and adaptation Frontiers in agricultural innovation and production U.S. agricultural trade and global markets Commodity outlooks Supply chain resilience Equity and inclusion

The Agricultural Outlook Forum is USDA’s largest and premier annual event. Each year it brings together a wide range of stakeholders from across the agricultural sector including producers, processors, policymakers, government officials, and nongovernmental organizations. In 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, USDA held the 97th Forum as a free, virtual event for the first time, drawing nearly 5,000 attendees from the United States and around the world. AQHA Past President Howard Weiss, a member of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, passed away December 4, 2021. Weiss became involved with Quarter Horses through his daughters, who were active in showing. He and his wife, Phyllis, were active as owners and breeders. Phyllis passed away earlier this year. “Howard Weiss represented the new face of the Association – of folks who had been attracted to Quarter Horses in the pursuit of wholesome, family-oriented activity,” wrote Don Hedgpeth in “They Rode Good Horses.” Horses that Weiss owned include Lane’s Super Son, AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse by Super Charge; Nite Watch Chex, 1971 high-point western riding gelding and 1975 world champion in senior reining by King Fritz; and Docs Breeze Bar by Doc’s Doctor, a gray gelding that played the role of Captain Call’s (actor Tommy Lee Jones) mount in the “Lonesome Dove” miniseries. Howard Weiss Weiss became an AQHA Director in 1970. He chaired the Association’s judges committee and was a member of the youth activities and AJQHA scholarship committees. He became 37th AQHA president in 1986. Weiss’s term as AQHA president brought an end to the turbulent debate over the proposed separate racing association. A racing council was elected to make recommendations to the AQHA Executive Committee regarding the future of Quarter Horse racing. Also while Weiss was in office, plans were finalized for the television series called “America’s Horse,” which highlighted Quarter Horse events around the country. Weiss served the horse industry in other ways as well. He served as president for the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse and Valley Quarter Horse associations. Weiss was a member of the U. C. Davis equine research committee and the California Department of Agriculture Horse Drug Committee. Weiss was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1997. from page 86

More Barry Burk

"It wasn't really frustrating, and I never did feel sorry for myself," said Burk, who was considered one of the nicest men to compete in the rodeo arena. "I just got beat by guys who were better than me." Burk was also an accomplished steer wrestler and team roper. He first qualified for the NFR as a steer wrestler in 1963 at the age of 21 and did that again in 1969 when he finished fifth in the all-around world standings. He also competed as a team roping header at the 1968 NFR, with qualifying partner Frank Ferreira Jr. JANUARY 2022

After Burk retired from competing, he began hosting his Barry Burk Junior Roping Championships, and the family will host the 37th edition Memorial Day weekend in his hometown of Ardmore, Okla. "One of his last wishes was to go to the BB Junior Roping Championships in 2021," Blair said. "He went and put the roping on and got to see all his friends and he loved that. After he had a Hall of Fame rodeo career, he gave back to the sport he loved." Future world champions and fellow ProRodeo Hall of Fame tiedown ropers Cody Ohl and Fred Whitfield attended Burk's junior roping event.

American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer and AQHA Honorary Vice President Betty Nix died December 19, 2021, in Kalispell, Montana. She was 95. Betty Nix worked for the American Quarter Horse Association for 40 years, retiring on June 30, 1992. Throughout her employment, Betty became a highly respected figurehead

– a person people knew or knew of, and a “mother” to the membership and staff. Her motherly ways and “Mother Nix” nickname stemmed from her caring attitude and concern for people’s feelings. For four decades Betty’s job was just that – taking care of customer demands, requests, complaints and problems. “I made my name out there by handling a lot of calls from irate customers. It was a challenge to help those people,

AQHA’s Betty Nix Passes at 95

but I knew how they felt about some things. I always tried to make them understand our policies. A lot of it was communication and giving them that personal touch. When I helped someone and solved the problem, it made me happy.” Making sure that AQHA employees continued to give customers the service they deserve was the advice Betty left behind. “If you treat people right, the

Association will go a long way,” she said. Betty’s usefulness to AQHA did not end with that assignment. Out of necessity, she cross trained and became proficient at the jobs of other employees so she could pick up the slack when someone was absent. In this manner, she was beginning to lay the groundwork for the important role she would play in the Association’s future. Her willingness to handle any job would eventually make her an ideal person to supervise other employees. Although some jobs were better than others, Betty said she always tried to make the best out of every situation. “That is what I’ve tried to tell myself, and I tried to instill that in the girls who worked for me. One of my bosses at Garlock told me that if you have a job that you don’t like, try to make a game out of it and you’ll end up enjoying it. I never forgot that.” As Betty’s job responsibilities grew, so did her position at the Association. In time, the softspoken woman found herself as secretary to former Executive Secretary Howard Linger for a short while. She was then promoted to Administrative Assistant and cultivated a reputation as a trouble-shooter for problem files. She retired after four decades but remained in the hearts of many of her friends and coworkers. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Kyle King Jumped 836 Spots in the World Rankings in 2021

For decades, Kyle King has been a North American show jumping staple. The west coast rider is a known threat in a jump off and no stranger to international competition or the winner’s circle. But he’s never really had a string to be a consistent contender on the world stage. That fact was reflected on the world rankings list. At the start of 2021, you had to scroll down 917 riders to find King. He’s been rapidly rising the ranks since. In November, King cracked the top 100 for the first time. As of December, he’s in the 81st spot and he isn’t planning to change his upward course anytime soon. The gnawing question is how the heck did he do it? King’s recent streak of success came largely on the inaugural 2021 Major League Showjumping tour, where he quickly became a familiar face in the victory gallop. Since the MLSJ tour launched at Traverse City Horse Shows in July, he’s logged ten top five 5* finishes, including victories in Monterrey, MEX (Etalon), and Thermal, CA (Magic Mike). “To be able to campaign like I’ve been doing this year and doing all of these Major League stops and just getting consistent points [has been great],” said King. “I’ve never looked at the world rankings because I never really had a group of horses to be able to campaign and the ability to do the five stars. So now it’s kind of exciting. I know a lot of the other riders, too, and we’re waiting like little kids on Christmas to see where we’re at,” he laughed.

VetNova expands service with launch of US affiliate

VetNova was founded by veterinarians and for veterinarians, with a single objective: to improve the health and welfare of companion animals and horses. VetNova has launched its United States affiliate, VetNova Animal Health LLC. VetNova was founded in Spain in 2007, and it is currently present in more than 20 countries around the world. The company operates under 4 fundamental priorities: innovation and quality, customer service, its people, and social responsibility. VetNova’s top priority is the quality, efficacy, and safety of its products. The small animal catalog is made up of more than 60 products that offer solutions within everyone's reach, in the areas of dermatology, renal/urinary, convalescence/recovery, senior care, behavior, odontology, neurology, muscular-skeletal, digestive/ hepatic, cardiology, ophthalmology, and wellness. A ‘Million’ reasons to head to Fort Worth in September 2022

Shining Spark Passes Away JANUARY 18, 1989 – DECEMBER 27, 2021.

by Jessica Hein

“Blessed with a depth of life beyond measure.” As much as Shining Spark's mind, heart and eyes shined bright, I knew in my heart that his body was getting tired. Today, just three weeks shy of his 33rd birthday we made the decision to say our goodbyes. Shiner was always a wise, kind gentleman and for over 32 years, he was the "heart and soul" of Carol Rose Quarter Horses. He lived a legendary life and had a tremendous impact on so many families, friends, young people and equine disciplines worldwide. He fulfilled my dreams and inspired so many others. His life exceeded expectations, his career and versatility unmatched. It will always be an honor and a privilege to have shared in his life's work and to be a part of his legacy, as well as future. Special thanks to Dr. Joe Carter and Dr. Dickson Varner for helping me make the right decision. Thanks to all the friends who have called, texted, messaged and written me after they heard the news. Special thanks also to Humberto Camacho, Todd Wagner, Sam Rose, Dr. Joe Carter and his staff for your love and assistance with Shiner’s final moments. Goodbye Shiner, you will forever be the Shining Spark in my heart, and for so many others– you lived up to your name in every way. Rest in peace my friend. ~ Carol Rose

After a successful 2021 show and positive feedback from this year’s participants, the World Show Advisory Committee recommended moving all APHA world championship halter events—excluding performance halter and color classes—to the APHA/WCHA Halter Million; the APHA Board of Directors recently approved their recommendation. Benefits: - Hosts all Open/Amateur/Youth world championship & Breeders’ Futurity halter classes (all ages) at one event, excluding performance halter and color classes. - Open/Amateur/Youth world championship performance halter and color classes will take place in the summer with the remainder of the APHA World Show classes. - Reduces cost for exhibitors, especially families who want to show together across halter divisions. - Preserves and expands APHA’s partnership with WCHA Breeder’s Championship & Big Money Halter Futurities, including cost-sharing and revenue-generation opportunities. - Creates a true World Championship Show atmosphere and prestige for the APHA halter industry. - Positively impacts the event schedule for the summer APHA World Show. Stay tuned to all the APHA channels for more information as it becomes available.

Teton Ridge behind PBR Team Series BY: ANDREW GIANGOLA

PBR today announced the PBR Team Series, a new team-format league complementing its successful Unleash The Beast premier tour, launching in June 2022. It’s being called a transformational change for a sport that has grown continually for 28 years, as well as a huge victory for cowboys in offering them new money, professional coaching, and the incomparable camaraderie understood by anyone who’s ever played team sports. The PBR Team Series, which will span June to November 2022 in its inaugural season, following the May conclusion of the Unleash The Beast, will launch with eight founding teams playing a 10-weekend regular season culminating in a team playoff.

Each team will be based in a home market to be named, playing host to an annual bull riding event and Western lifestyle festival. There will also be two “neutral site” league-produced events and the season playoff and championship. The teams with their respective ownership and home market selections will be announced early in 2022. The PBR Team Series will host a player draft prior to the 2022 season, drafting bull riders from any PBR rider member who has declared for the draft based on League rules. The team lottery will be held when PBR visits Madison Square Garden in New York in early January. Fans can expect the world’s best bull riders to join the new teams. Riders and team owners will compete for separate prize pools that will reward team performance at each event and in the final season standings. “Adding to an already thrilling sport, recent PBR team format events produced even more rider passion and better competition in an electric atmosphere,” said PBR Commissioner and CEO Sean Gleason. “We anticipate the PBR Team Series will make the riders better, and our sport overall will get better. Fans will have new rooting interests, host cities and home-team partners will deliver new marketing programs, and we will create additional value for every PBR stakeholder.” Event competitions will be structured as head-to-head games between teams. Each game will feature five riders per team squaring off against another team. The team with the highest aggregate score of qualified rides among its riders will be declared the winner of each game. Most competitions will be staged as three-day events featuring three games per team. The team with the best game record across an event will be declared the winning team. Rider and Team event payouts and season standings will be based on Win-Loss records 100

and tie-breaks throughout the entire season. PBR has decades of experience promoting and producing enormously successful bull riding events. The PBR Team Series builds on the existing structure of PBR with the same basic rules for judging and scoring qualified bull rides. The most significant change is events will recognize team performance rather than individual performance – with riders and owners winning as a team. In recent history, bull riders competing on teams debuted with the PBR Global Cup in 2017, with PBR hosting the global competition in Edmonton, Sydney, and twice in Arlington, Texas. PBR team competitions continued with the Monster Energy Team Challenge (METC) in June 2020 at South Point Arena in Las Vegas, culminating in the METC Finals in Sioux Falls in July. In addition, PBR staged “Cowboys for a Cause” team charity events aboard the USS Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2020 and 2021. “I grew up in the format of team competition when I played soccer in Brazil, and I loved the brotherhood of being on a team and having strategies to beat another team,” said reigning PBR World Champion Jose Vitor Leme. “I’m very excited for the draft and finding out who will be my partners on the team. People cheer for teams. This will bring a lot more fans to this sport.” “I’m really excited for this new opportunity in our sport,” added 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis. “Teams bring a great new element to bull riding. Guys feel the responsibility to ride for their teammates, and it makes everyone ride better. You’re riding for more than yourself.” The PBR Team Series will be televised by CBS and CBS Sports Network and carried on RidePass on Pluto TV. Recognizing the added drama and excitement when riders join teams, PBR had been considering the Team concept for years. Then the Coronavirus pandemic brought significant restructuring to the Unleash The Beast schedule, most notably a pivot over to bring the World Finals to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The push to make Teams a reality picked up speed. Now the sport will have two contiguous tours – the individual Unleash The Beast competition from January to May, culminating in World Finals in Fort Worth at Dickies Arena, followed by PBR Team Series, running from June to November, reaching a crescendo in what is expected to be a thrilling playoff. Nearly 30 years ago, 20 rodeo cowboys founded PBR to increase their earnings and ensure a strong and growing sport for the next generation of cowboys. Similarly, the first riders to declare for the inaugural Teams draft will be forging a better, more lucrative future for generations of bull riders to come. “This is a big victory for bull riders – a huge effort to grow the sport in the biggest way yet,” said PBR co-founder Cody Lambert. “The team format is a game-changer to improve an already exciting sport, make it even better, and give riders more opportunities.”

Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega Proclaims January 2022 as “BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction Month” As Barrett-Jackson, “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” looks ahead to its 50th anniversary celebration and the 2022 Scottsdale Auction, January 22-30, Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega has proclaimed the entire month of January 2022 as “Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Month” to recognize the auction company’s half-century-long commitment to the community. This will mark the first time in BarrettJackson history that the mayor’s proclamation spans the entire month. Before BarrettJackson Auction Company was formed in 1971, its founding members, Tom Barrett and Russ Jackson set the stage for the organization’s commitment to the community of Scottsdale when it first held the Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes in 1967 to raise funds for the local Scottsdale library and the community arts center. Following Barrett-Jackson’s first auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale in 1989, Scottsdale Mayor Herb Drinkwater issued a proclamation recognizing that special week in January to be known as “Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction Week,” thus beginning a proclamation tradition that every Scottsdale mayor has continued. “We have received tremendous support over many years from the City of Scottsdale, beginning in the late 1960s when my father Russ and his business partner Tom Barrett first held the Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We have continued to enjoy an incredible relationship with the City’s leadership over the years and we are proud to call Scottsdale our home. It is an honor to receive Mayor Ortega’s month-long proclamation, a first in our history, and we are thrilled to once again bring the national and international spotlight on Scottsdale for another exciting event as we celebrate 50 years of The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.” “Congratulations on the success and longevity of ‘The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,’” remarked Mayor David D. Ortega. “I’ve attended with my family and friends for decades and each year tops the last.” The annual Scottsdale Auction has hosted many of the most electrifying moments in collector car history over the last 50 years. The 2022 Scottsdale Auction will celebrate many of those milestones and memories while delivering an action-packed automotive lifestyle event highlighted by one of the most spectacular dockets ever seen, all at No Reserve. With incredible vehicles such as a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, along with celebrity icons such as Pitbull and Bret Michaels selling vehicles to support charitable initiatives closest to their hearts, the 2022 event will provide an excellent commencement for the next 50 years of Barrett-Jackson’s history in Scottsdale.
