Shawn Flarida reaches $6 Million Dollar Mark

NRHA Has New Million Dollar Owners

December 8, 2017 – Oklahoma City – After another successful year at the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show, Shawn Flarida has crossed yet another milestone in the NRHA history books—becoming NRHA’s first Six Million Dollar Rider. Shawn earned his first million after a successful run at the 2003 All American Quarter Horse Congress, making his mark on the sport of reining. His successes continued as he achieved notoriety within the industry Shawn Flarida by surpassing earning records with NRHA year after year. Flarida’s quest to become NRHA’s first Six Million Dollar Rider became reality during the Lucas Oil Level 4 Open Futurity Finals. With two horses in the competition, his chances of crossing this historic milestone were high. Flarida’s first run on Garry Ray Smith’s Missin My Tinsel (Hollywoodstinseltown x Dont Miss This) scored a 220, earning him 9th place and $22,287.89. George and Carol Bell’s Mr. Masota Star (Wimpys Little Step x Cee Another Masota) was Flarida’s second ride. A score of 222 ½ fell in 3rd place and earned $73,554.10—pushing his earnings just over $6 million.

Michael and Michelle Miola at their ranch in Arizona

Many historic milestones were crossed at the 2017 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show. Adding to the list of accomplishments was Silver Spurs Equine. During the Lucas Oil Level 4 Open Futurity final, Silver Spurs Equine crossed the mark as an NRHA Million Dollar Owner. A vast majority of Silver Spurs Equine’s success began with their vision for improving the industry. Beginning with the world famous Boomernic (Reminic x Docs Leavem Smoke), the ranch founded an elite breeding program that features some of the top stallions in the equine world. The success continued as Silver Spurs Equine bred, purchased and sent horses to top level shows. Notable finishes include 2017 NRHA Derby Level 3 Open Champion, Ruf Lil Magnum (Magnum Chic Dream x Dunit A Lil Ruf), and 2016 NRHA Derby Level 4 Open Reserve CoChampion, Platinum Vintage (A Sparkling Vintage x Starjac Miss). During the 2017 NRHA Futurity, Silver Spurs Equine had two horses competing in the Level 4 Open Finals. During the event, the ranch earned more than $78,000 with runs made by the following horses: Xtra Dun Step Xtra Dun Step (Wimpys Little Step x All Thats Dun) ridden by Trevor Dare placing third in the Level 4 Open division Xtra Gotta Step (Wimpys Little Step x Gotta Git Ya Dun) ridden by Jordan Larson in the Level 4 Open division

Congratulations to NRHA’s newest Million Dollar Owner,

Silver Spurs Equine.

Fappani surpasses $5 Million in Earnings

December 11, 2017 – Oklahoma City – Fappani and Futurity are two words that instantly come to mind when thinking about the reining industry. The combination of the two have always seemed to bring about great success, and this year was no different. During the 2017 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show, Andrea Fappani became NRHA’s second Five Million Dollar Rider. In 2006, Fappani crossed his first Million Dollar milestone. Since then, he has raced through the ranks as a top rider and has become a household name within the reining industry. At the early age of 33, he was the youngest rider to cross the $2 million mark. Qualifying two horses for the Lucas Oil Level 4 Open Finals, the milestone was within grasp. First in the arena was Coughi Reining Horses USA Inc’s, All American Vintage (A Sparkling Vintage x All Ruffed Up). The run earned a 224 ½ and landed the pair in second place. Lil Patron (Lil Joe Cash x Miss Rey O Shine), owned by Tim Roper, placed 26th with a 216. The pair of horses earned Fappani more than $129,000—making him NRHA’s newest Five Million Dollar Rider.

Craig Schmersal Wins the 2017 NRHA Open Futurity Finals

Oklahoma City, December 2, 2017- The 2017 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show saw the highest scores of the week as the biggest stars shined in the Lucas Oil Level (L)4 Open Finals on Saturday night in front of a full house. The Open Futurity also witnessed a new champion crowned: Craig Schmersal. Though the NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider has won every NRHA major event, the NRHA Open Futurity Championship title was missing in his impressive show record. Helping Schmersal conquer the Futurity crown was Face The Attitude (Pale Face Dunnit x Miss Lil Addy Tude), a mare owned by Hickory Creek Ranch LLC, bred by KC Performance Horses LLC, and nominated by Ginger Schmersal. The duo was the last draw in the Open Finals with a 224.5 to beat, posted by NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani – who unofficially surpassed the Five Million Dollar Mark – riding All American Vintage. Following a powerful ride that thrilled the crowd, Schmersal and his mare conquered the Championship with a 226.5 score. “It’s taken a while to win the NRHA Futurity – 27 years – but we finally made it,” said Schmer-

28

sal, who did not try to hide his tears. “This mare reminds me of her mom and dad, and I had the pleasure of showing them both. The babies by and out of them try so hard and are so steady. They have their brain and the ability,” said Schmersal. “This mare, ‘Ariel,’ has the ability, but most importantly she has the brain to back it up. You can have a horse with a great ability, and you can have a horse with a great brain, but if you don’t have it all, it’s just a hard deal.” “I’m so grateful that nobody bought her,” said Craig’s wife, Ginger. “I put a high price on her, and I’m sure they thought I was nuts. In the last few months, she’s just bloomed and grew up. That brain has always been beautiful, but now she’s growing into what she is, and I am thrilled with this title that Craig so deserves.”

Fappani takes Reserve

All American Vintage (A Sparkling Vintage x All Ruffed Up) – a stallion now owned by Cuoghi Reining Horses USA Inc., bred by Petra Zeitler, nominated by Harper Conner, and ridden by Fappani – settled for reserve honors. “This horse is amazing,” said Fappani. “I purchased him [previously] because my son Luca convinced me to buy him. He wasn’t the easiest horse to ride as a 2-year-old, and after the first time I rode him, I had decided not to buy him. Luca told me I should go back and try him again. We did, and I guess he was right! We won the All American Quarter Horse Congress Open Futurity and now earned the reserve Open Championship here. The mistakes we made tonight were determined by me, so at the end of the day, even though my goal is to win, I am happy with the way he went for me.”

JANUARY 2018

Three horses tied to win the L3 Open Futurity Championship with a 220.5: You Gotta Be Dreamin (Magnum Chic Dream x Forever Going Steady) ridden by Adam Hendrickson (owned by Jake Dahl and Heather Dahl DVM, bred by Heather Dahl and nominated by Jake Dahl); NRHA/Markel Insurance Sale Graduate Shine Plum Shine (Shine Chic Shine x Plum Reyning) ridden by Marco Ricotta (owned by Story Book Stables, bred by Andre De Bellefeuille and nominated by Rosanne Sternberg); Mega Mag (Magnum Chic Dream x Big Gold Chex) a stallion ridden by Casey Hinton, owned by Kathy Hinton and Casey Hinton, and bred and nominated by Garth Hystad. “I am on cloud 9 and this is awesome; this horse is awesome,” said NRHA Professional Hendrickson. “I don’t even know what to say right now. I’ve made the finals here, but this is by far the best run in the finals that I’ve had!”

Driggers/Nogueira tie Team Roping World Record

LAS VEGAS – Junior Nogueira was so excited to celebrate that he nearly fell off his horse. His jubilation came with good reason, as the heeler and his header, Kaleb Driggers, tied the team roping world record with a time of 3.3 seconds Friday night.

The time tied them with Chad Masters and Jade Corkill, who also recorded their 3.3 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER in 2009, and Brock Hansen/Ryan Motes in Nacogdoches, Texas, in 2012. “Man, that was great,” Nogueira said. “When I looked back at the time and saw 3.3, I said ‘Golly! We tied the arena/world record!’ When I went to celebrate, my horse got spooked or something. I couldn’t find the saddle horn. I just had the reins in my hand and I think he spun around three times. I tried to get a hold of him, but I didn’t. When I got up, everyone

38

was standing up and they were ready to cheer because we tied the record.” The win put Driggers and Nogueira, who entered the WNFR in the top spot in the world standings, back into the race for the world title – though they are ninth in the race for the average. “We’re far down enough in the average that even if we end up pulling in the average check, it’s not going to be very good, maybe seventh or eighth at best,” Driggers said. “The last three or four nights, we’d been going for broke, and tonight it worked out for us. We had a good steer. We hadn’t really been drawing very good, a lot of the steers we had, people hadn’t even placed on them. Then tonight, we knew we had a really good steer and we were just going to be aggressive. They roped a great roping tonight, and we had to follow up.” Driggers has $222,317, while Nogueira has $223,047. “To have a chance to win it, I think a lot of stuff would have to go our way tomorrow, but we gave ourselves a chance, and that’s pretty much all we can do,” Driggers said.

“Go West, young man.”

—Horace Greeley

A Headstrong Boy Heads Out One Legend Inspires Another. Growing up in Troy Grove, young James Hickok and his brothers idolize the frontier Mountain Man and scout Kit Carson.

JANUARY 2018

Bloody Kansas: Good Men in a Bad Land James is only 15 when he first tramps across the rolling plains, cross cut with gorges and the forthcoming rivulets of blood. The territory is becoming a battlefield over slavery, and James doesn’t tell his mother what he witnesses ( see quote, bottom of page), but she likely knows of the bloody contest broiling across the landscape. Tradition claims James gravitates to Gen. James Lane, organizer of the Free State Army of Kansas. For more than a year, James follows Lane and some even say he becomes Lane’s bodyguard while throwing back the advance of the Missouri Border Ruffians. All sides perpetuate plenty of atrocities—lynchings, murders, massacres and all the horrors of guerrilla warfare. It is a rough school.

Wild Bill Still Looms Large Did Wild Bill suffer from a dose of syphilis that led to eyesight issues? In my opinion, he probably did. Could he have hit a big strike in Deadwood and settled down with Agnes on a horse ranch? Probably not, but that was his dream. Instead, he became something else: “Prince of the Pistoleers.” All the terms that followed: the “Showdown,” “Gun Man,” “Gunslinger” and, of course, “Gunfighter” came directly from him and his storied life. He was the first gunfighter. And his boast came true: he did things Kit Carson never dreamed of doing. As Joseph G. Rosa put it in his introduction to Wild Bill Hickok: The Man & His Myth: “Even today, attempts are being made to turn Hickok into some kind of a psychological freak, adding facets to his character and behavior that were not evident during his lifetime.” Rosa provided a better understanding of the real Wild Bill, ferreting out the hard truths about a mythical character who actually walked the earth as flesh and blood. Thanks, Joe.

Bettis Blew Away the Field to Win Rookie of the Year

By Kristen M. White Taci Bettis had a season that little girls and young women alike dream about, a season where the outcome was even greater than she dared to imagine. Bettis, the 2017 Rookie of the Year, claimed the title in fine fashion. She not only blew away the rest of the field, winning a whopping $97,023 in her first year, but it was three-and-a-half times as much as runner up Holly Wright of Gruver, Texas, with $27,462. And, Bettis staked claim to her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth too. Bettis, of Round Top, Texas, finished the regular season in 8th place in the barrel racing standings, easily securing herself a place in Las Vegas. Everything that’s happened this season is still a bit blurry for Bettis. “My plan was I was going to try and win the Rookie, and to make the Texas circuit finals. That’s what I wanted to do … and God had other plans for me!” she said. “I didn’t want to set goals so big that it was too hard to attain, and I

48

Jerry Ann Taylor was a daring trick rider who brought a style, glamour and spirit to the rodeo arena.

Following her passing in February, 2012, a fund was started, by her husband Dutch Taylor, her mother Jo Matthews and other donors, to reward cowgirls who carry the same sense of style. The WPRA is pleased the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame has collaborated with the us to offer this prestigious award at the 2017 Wrangler NFR as well as the 2017 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Finals. Cash awards are given to the Best Dressed Barrel Racer at both rodeos - $5,000 to the first place winner - $2,000 to the second place winner - $1,000 to the third place winner thought those were big goals that I had to work for. I still don’t have words for this. I really don’t. I’m speechless!” Bettis had been off her horse, Smash (registered Bogie Is A Smash) for more than six months, after he sustained an injury, and before she ventured fully into the pro ranks. Although she said she was “pretty sure” he’d be fine, she couldn’t exactly know what the 9-year-old gelding would be like when she climbed back in the saddle.

She got him when he was 5, but she had largely stopped racing for a couple of years when she got married and pursued other things. Deciding she wanted to truly try her hand at pro rodeo, she and Smash ventured into it together. “He needed to be seasoned – and so did I,” she said simply. “So each milestone we’ve made together this year, it’s been even more special to me, looking at coming up together on all of this. Learning from each other.” Bettis knew she wanted to try

JANUARY 2018

and win the Rookie award, and hoped to make the Texas Circuit Finals, but she knew she’d have some tough competition in both realms. When she left Texas for the summer run, she had less than $20,000 won. She set out to “see what it was like. “I was just rolling with it, and with each week I was winning some money,” Bettis said. “$10,000 here, $12,000 there. Over the Fourth of July, I won $10,000 and by mid-July I was thinking, ‘This is crazy!’” She said she never wanted to

Arizona Quarter Horse Serves A Wide Audience with No Bling Shows

The “Bling” may have been absent from AzQHA’s No Bling Show held on November 11th at WestWorld, but the number of enthusiastic exhibitors was certainly bigger than ever. With AQHA and All-Breed classes, this series of one-day shows is hitting the mark by attracting a diverse group of riders. Word is getting out that these shows are a fun and relaxed venue for all types of exhibitors. Entries were up 40% over the last No Bling show, seeing a final count of 442. There was a full slate of Versatility Ranch Horse events with a total of 159 entries. Exhibitors even hauled in from California and

60

Colorado specifically for the VRH. Show coordinator Dana Yingling was thrilled with the turn out and commented, “The VRH classes are becoming so popular, we are hoping to dedicate an entire arena and judge at our next ‘No Bling’ show February 17, 2018.” The rail and All-Breed classes saw a jump in entries as well. To facilitate the even larger numbers of exhibitors expected in February, AzQHA is looking to bring on additional arenas and is working on a schedule that has all the arenas ending by 6:00PM. They are very mindful that scheduling is the starting point to ensuring a great experience for all exhibitors.

There was an Arabian show at Westwold at the same time and some of their youth exhibitors who participate in IEA came over and entered the All Breed classes. No Bling shows are a great place for IEA kids to gain showing experience and spend time with their team mates. AzQHA’sShow Dough program is generating a lot of interest from new exhibitors. Any new exhibitor who has never been an AZQHA member and has never previously competed at a ‘No Bling’ Show is eligible for $100 in “Show Dough” if they become an AZQHA member in 2018. The money can be used at any ‘No Bling’ Show and

JANUARY 2018

can be applied towards show class entries and stall fees. AzQHA saw a need for another tier of horse shows in Arizona. While it produces Sun Circuit, one of the largest and most prestigious Quarter Horse circuits in the country, AzQHA desires to serve all equine exhibitors at every level by offering many different event formats. The brilliance of No Bling is that anybody can find a place where they fit in and its affordable. It also offers experienced riders the opportunity to try a new discipline or gain experience with a new horse. The next No Bling is February 17, 2018 at Horse Lover’s Park. Details and entries can be found at azqha.org.

New Year, Rocket Man or Space X, I’m possibly becoming a conspirator

How about the FBI and Robert Mueller’s Special Well…. Looky here, looky here….. 2018 Counsel?? I’m pretty sure if you follow my article, PEOPLE!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! How’s you know where I’m at, but here we go!! Last your head?? How’s your belt line …. How’s month I said I was taking Trump’s approach, and your pocket book after Christmas LOL? Does keeping my damn mouth shut until something it look like mine??? Look like that emoji meme panned out… Also, to keep my editor from having of the chicken with like 3 feathers left on it… a heart attack LOL… Do we have a problem here?? Yeah that one! The one that looks like he or Now, stay with me all the way to the end this time!! First time By Justin Legler she just had the fight of its life…. You noticed I left that I’m gonna become a conspirator, but you got to see the picture one open… Hell!!! It may identify itself as a damn bunny I’m gonna paint! My first conspiracy theory! Very exciting rabbit… YOU DON’T KNOW!! Probably the reason the damn chicken LOL… got its ass kicked… Alright… I’m already getting side tracked LOL… We all know this is a pretty touchy subject especially right now, but let’s be real for a minute…. Do we really have a problem??? Have you seen misconduct Back to my beat-up wallet… Yeah, I spent too much this year too! Hard yourself??? No???? Well neither have I, or guess what…. I would have said not to knowing, “WE” get to keep more of our “OWN” money this something!!! Probably kicked some ass!!! Most respectful men that I know, year with the new tax cut and all… Drum roll please…. Not for me…. would do the same thing…. I also said this last month! Most women I know For TRUMP!! “How about “THAT” huh….. 30+ years…. Where’s including my mother, would have kicked these guy’s asses! I was tickled to death unemployment?? Lowest it’s been in 18 years!!! Stock Market….. IT’S when I watched Chad Prather’s video that basically said the same thing about GONNA BE A GOOD YEAR and to top it off, I’m excited!! I’m excited his mother… Crap… These sexual predators wouldn’t have had a chance… to see if they’re gonna finally put that crooked ass women in prison that He goes on to explain how his mother would handle the situation/man, then go had all the sheep fooled!! Anyways, we’ll get to all that trust me!! I got back for seconds!!! I was in tears because that’s exactly what I was referring plenty to say to kick off the new year right, piss a few off Legler style, too…. So, that was the start I needed to tell myself, I’m not the only one thinking but ya got to stick with me! Welcome to 2018 everybody! Justin here @ this is Politically driven… Self-advancement that someone didn’t get, possibly Imperial! retaliation! BUT….. I was still lacking one thing…. I wanted to see or hear a Who else floored their truck when they seen that big light and smoke loom across the western skies 3 days before Christmas, while the sun was setting that evening?? I had my kids with me hauling ass, trying to make the feed store before they closed… My oldest daughter Carlie goes, “Dad… What is that?” I looked over and seen it… First thing that popped into my head was, that fat little bastard from North Korea is nuking us!! What did I do??? I smashed the gas thinking I was gonna out run it! Come on Mopar!!!! Don’t fail me now… Then I realized, I’m trying to out run a rocket in a Cummins powered Dodge Dually that weighs about 14K (with all the tools on it), and has three hundred and thirty thousand miles on it… Ain’t gonna happen… Then my kids lives all flashed before my eyes…. Then I woke up noticing all my kids are staring at me… WHAT????? I gathered myself and said, it’s Santa doing a test run LOL… Watched it for a minute, then seen the second blast at separation for stage two, later I read… My butt checks let go of that seat at that point, and my foot come off the throttle…. Must be a rocket kids LOL…. Pretty cool to see once I realized, my skin wasn’t going to melt off my bones…. I’m sure you all seen it, or seen it on Facebook… If not, look it up! Pretty cool! What did we do over here at Imperial for the month of December… Well, some of us threw paper airplanes at each other arguing, “who’s buying lunch??” LOL…. Others such as our field crew froze their butts off building a barn down in Catalina! Shop techs finally had to bust out the fire barrels, and smudge pots….. Typical December, except guys in Catalina got caught by surprise with the twenties when it’s been so warm here.. That produced some snot noises, but barn turned out nice! So did the fence… They also built a “Modular Mare Motel Shed-Row” right here in our backyard in Mesa… Finished up the month building walls for a few of our in-state dealers… Barn side had a good month! Good job guys! THANK YOU for picking up the slack for the paper plane throwers since one didn’t get to go to the NFR, and he was pouting… As I’ve said the last 5 years, NEXT YEAR!! Everyone have fun up there?? Be sure to like our page on Facebook Imperial Enterprise Inc… Only place to see finish pics, and our monthly specials right here in the Bridle & Bit… Speaking of the NFR… Between it and Christmas, it usually puts a little damper on our trailer sales, but we managed to sneak a few out of here! That was in between paper airplane battles, and crashes… Our trailer techs stayed busy though! Had an average of 10 trailers sitting in line for service, repair, or custom adds everyday here @ Imperial…. Trailer tires seemed to be the hot commodity for the month of December, including custom aluminum trailer rims… Few Christmas presents I assume, but we still got plenty! Or, we got 3 trucks that run daily if we need to order!! Need trailer tires, rims, or even trailer service?? Call Beau!! Like us on Facebook @ Imperial Trailer Sales and Livestock Supply Inc to see what’s going on around here on the trailer side… Always got something fun or entertaining! Alright, who’s ready… Strap yourself in!! Butt cheeks engage in grabbin that seat… Going to launch us right into “Politics by A Dumb Cowboy”!!!!! OK, I couldn’t help it LOL…. Where’s everybody at on this sexual misconduct?? 68 68

“WOMEN” say it… She did!! You see that video?? She nailed it on the head! If not, email me, and I’ll send you the link… Justin@imperialaz.com Now, I’m not saying it doesn’t happen… It does!! Or we wouldn’t have terms like “RAPE” in this Country… RIGHT?? My personal opinion, the only Country that’s got the correct punishment for rape, is Africa!! The accusers there get a huge rock tied to their nut sack, while their hands and feet are bound together, and suspended over a stick balancing on the torso area… HELL YEAH!! You’ll think twice about it, if you feared punishment like that…. I GUARANTEE IT!! Get a second, look it up on You Tube… It’s fascinating LOL…. It’s for under age victims, but it don’t matter! If all Countries did this to the accused no matter the age of victims, we wouldn’t have a problem now would we!! If I was the law, I’d also hand them women a bull whip and tell them to enjoy themselves…..!!! You got 8 hours hun! WHIP HIS ASS, and make sure you get that bean bag that’s purple right now a few times! Walk up and flick it if you can’t hit it because that’s the money shot!!! But… I’m an insensitive asshole…. Or am I??? See…. Most of us with a head on our shoulders, think the same way… Do we have a problem?? Now let’s turn this conversation towards Robert Mueller, the FBI directors, and the Clinton’s… Does nobody else see what’s going on besides me, and Darin Damme of Reality Check (formerly on KTAR)…. Common people!! If you just said no, you “ARE THE SHEEP”!! You’re exactly what the Swamp wants, and why the rest of us voted Trump in! Did you not see Capital Hill grill Rosenstein… No?? GOOGLE IT!!!! How about our FBI directors texts?? Peter Strzok the former #2 official in counterintelligence who was ousted from the Special Counsel because of these texts towards Trump, “Menace – loathsome human - I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office”… This was actually sent to Lisa Page who is a “FBI Lawyer”!!! Strzok also texted, “That there’s no way he gets elected – but I’m afraid we can’t take the risk – It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely even you die before you’re 40! He was referring to the Russian meddling which “he” was a part of the probe! Do you realize Strzok is the one who changed Comey’s description of Clinton’s actions from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless” because it could create criminal penalties against her… He was also one of the ones leading the email investigation… YEAH….. Let that soak in just for a minute… When he mentioned Andy’s office in one of the text's, he’s probably referring to FBI Deputy Director Andy McCabe! His wife received a $700K contribution from the Clinton’s for her campaign before he was appointed Deputy director… Have I painted a good enough picture yet…. CORRUPTION!!! Alright… You ready for this?? My first conspiracy theory, but seriously…. Something to really think about… We all keep asking, why now??? The sexual scandals… Well it worked in Alabama right with no proof or conviction… The left, media, and now the FBI who “FAILED” to put Hillary in office because “WE THE PEOPLE” voted change… Now they can’t get him out because they have nothing… All of a sudden, women start popping out of the wood works on Trump……!!!! SPEAK UP PEOPLE and don’t take the bait!!!! As always,

Nellie Miller and her homegrown AQHA/WPRA Horse of the Year Rafter W Minnie Reba were the model of consistency during the 2017 Wrangler NFR. As a result, Miller will be taking the WPRA world title home to Cottonwood, Calif. Miller and Sister set a new average record at the Wrangler NFR with a total time of 137.32 seconds on 10 runs, en route to the title. She broke the record set last year by Lisa Lockhart with a time of 137.98. Miller collected $177,962 during the 10 days in Las Vegas moving from third to No. 1. “I just have no words,” said Miller upon learning she had won the world title. “When I was at the NFR in 2010, we struggled so to come back this year and have this type of year is just really amazing. I can’t thank my parents enough for helping me get to this point. It is truly a family affair.” Her father, Sam Williams, trained Sister and so the win is as much his as it is for Nellie. For Miller, it was sweet victory at the Thomas and Mack having attended college at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, and competing on the rodeo team. “This is just so great for my family,” said Miller, who is married to James Miller the general manager of the Red Bluff (Calif.) Roundp. “Rodeo is what we do. I mean, this is the biggest event that you can win.” Hailey Kinsel continued to wow the crowd with another lighting fast time in Round 10. She won the round in a time of 13.17 seconds, after setting a new arena record in Rd 3 with a 13.11.

LAS VEGAS – For the second year in a row, bull rider Sage Kimzey did what no one has done before. He actually did two things nobody has done before. At the age of 23, Kimzey won his fourth consecutive world title in his fourth attempt, the first bull rider to ever do that. He won the fourth one in style, riding 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Girl Money to the tune of 88 points to win Round 10 and take home the gold buckle at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday in front of 16,954. His fourth title has him halfway to tying Don Gay’s record of eight bull riding world titles. “Each one of them is a step on the way up the mountain, and each is special because the road is so different each year,” Kimzey said.

“The trials and tribulations are different, and this being the fourth one, I’m halfway up the mountain that Donnie Gay set. I usually have a healthy lead, but this year I was hurt and banged up and sore, but I got the ball rolling in the spring.” Kimzey became the only bull rider to break the $400,000 mark in a single season. The champion won $192,134 at the Finals to give him a PRCA-record for most money won in bull riding in a year at $436,479, smashing the record he set of $327,178 in 2015.

By Kentucky Equine Research According to a recent study*, lameness in horses can be extremely difficult to identify, with gait asymmetries in nearly 75% of horses deemed sound by their owner Any alteration in limb-loading due to lameness can alter head and pelvic position. In that study, “gait asymmetry” referred to any change in the symmetrical movement of the horse detectable in the head and pelvis. Any alteration in limb-loading due to lameness can alter head and pelvic position. Using body-mounted sensors, the research team measured differences between maximum and minimum head and pelvic movements when horses were trotted in a straight line or while longeing. More specifically, vertical displacement between left and right forelimb and hindlimb stances were calculated during straight-line trot and on the longe. Those differences in head/pelvis movements were compared to previously reported symmetry thresholds. The key finding of the study involving 222 “sound” Warmblood riding horses involved in regular training showed that the bulk of included horses had a similar magnitude of asymmetric motion as horses examined and treated for lameness. Owners shouldn’t feel poorly for not recognizing lameness in their horses, as several previously published studies found poor agreement in lameness grades even among seasoned veterinarians. Nonetheless, accurate identification of lameness remains an essential technique to better treat lameness caused by pain, which poses important welfare issues. “Due to the high occurrence of lameness going undetected in performance horses, owners are encouraged to embrace oral joint health supplements prior to the detection of any lameness. Studies show that certain joint supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate included in KER•Flex, help protect the health and longevity of athletic horses. Hylauronic acid, found in Synovate HA, and DHA in EO•3, also aid in maintaining joint health,” advised Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER).

Pop quiz: When does an equine fetus undergo the most profound growth and development? In addition to improved conception, pregnancy, and foaling rates, mares with an appropriate BCS also produce high-quality colostrum. You’re right! It was a trick question.

78

Monitor Broodmare Health for Breeding Success Fetal foals gain about 1 lb (0.45 kg) a day during the last 90 days of gestation. Sure, that’s impressive, but consider for a moment that in a split second, a single sperm fertilizes a single egg to produce a single cell with a complete set of DNA. That one cell immediately begins dividing, forming a mul-

ticelled embryo with a functional circulatory system, rudimentary organ systems, and placenta before even leaving the oviduct and entering the uterus. The rapidly growing embryo then takes on the entire uterus, migrating and altering the uterine environment to ensure its viabil-

JANUARY 2018

ity. Finally, at around day 16 after fertilization, the embryo implants into the lining of the mare’s uterus where it will remain until time of parturition. According to a recent review on the topic*, Tom Stout, VetMB, Ph.D., of the Department of Equine Sciences at Utrecht University, in the Netherlands, “embryo-maternal dialog during the first month is essential not only to conceptus survival but also has more profound and long-lasting implications,” citing epigenetic influence over the development of the fetus. The embryo’s meanderings combined with the delicate nature of the mare’s uterus, propensity for infection and fluid retention, as well as myriad other causes, contribute to a high rate of early embryonic death. Every breeding season, veterinarians pull out all the stops to get and keep mares in foal, yet sometimes lament the conditions they must work with; at times they are referring to body condition and nutritional well-being. By feeding broodmares appropriately in the months prior to breeding, the likelihood of pregnancy increases. "Prior to breeding broodmares should have a body condition score of 5 or 6, tops, using the nine-point Henneke body condition score,” advised Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., an equine nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). In addition to improved conception, pregnancy, and foaling rates, mares with an appropriate BCS also produce high-quality colostrum. “This is especially true when mares are offered omega-3 fatty acid supplements prior to pregnancy and throughout gestation and lactation,” advised Crandell. KER offers EO•3, a potent, marine-based source of fish oil containing both EPA and DHA that provide a multitude of benefits to broodmares and their foals. *Stout, T.A. 2016. Horses naturally eat fiber. But for years, grains (corn, barley and oats) have been the standard for horse feed, even though research has proven that the high-soluble carbohydrates in grain-based feeds increase the potential for colic, laminitis, hyperactivity, ulcers and cribbing.

With its beet pulp based fiber content, New and Improved Triple CrownÂŽ Complete provides 12% fat and all the calories, vitamins and minerals of a grain-based feed, but with half of the potentially harmful soluble carbohydrates. Triple CrownÂŽ Complete now has the versatility to be fed in any hay or pasture situation, when hay and pasture are plentiful or to help when they are short.

Cavalia Opens in Scottsdale Feb. 21st

Odysseo – The most impressive and immense big top on the planet – part of the largest touring production ever created – has been raised near Red Mountain 202 at McClintock Dr. in Scottsdale, in preparation for the much-anticipated Arizona return of the entertainment phenomenon Cavalia Odysseo. Imagined by Normand Latourelle – renowned for combining different forms of artistic expression and reinventing the scenic space – the $30 million extravaganza that expands the definition of performance into an epic, yet soulful theatrical experience will open under the gigantic White Big Top February 21, with matinee and evening shows scheduled through March 18. This time around, thanks to the addition of a third arch supporting and extending the size of the massive White Big Top, the performance area itself will be almost twice the size as the one seen during the last stop, enabling larger-scale, cuttingedge creative performances. The new scenic space will allow to build a full 3-story high mountain for astounding fresh perspectives, literally recreating nature on stage, a vast space of freedom for the horses and artists to display their intimate collaboration. The 17,500-squarefoot stage – larger than an NHL ice rink – requires 10,000 tons of stone, earth and sand to create. Even more magical, spectacular and grandiose than before, this larger than life theatrical experience will soon mesmerize audiences of all ages in Scottsdale. Cavalia Odysseo now features more horses – 70 horses of 12 different breeds; and more artists – 50 talented riders, acrobats, dancers and musicians. The integration of additional horses and artists has resulted in many never-before-seen moments for the spectators. The $30 million breathtaking production has grown considerably in size and scope over the last few years without losing its soul. While the White Big Top rose 82

to the sky, guests and members of the press toured the impressive site that will soon host the epic experience Cavalia Odysseo – a unique, breathtaking and magical theatrical production. Standing 125 feet tall and covering a surface area of 58,397 square feet – the size of a football field – Cavalia Odysseo’s exceptional White Big Top is a mix of art, technology and advanced engineering. In order to break through the limitations of standard big top tents, allow for more flexibility in the performance area, and to give the horses the space they need to express themselves in all their beauty, Normand Latourelle partnered with specialized companies in Europe and Canada to create the high-tech structure. By removing the usual supporting masts from the stage and shifting the weight of the structure from the masts to three arches above the tent, this specially designed White Big Top is the best environment for the horses and acrobats to perform breathtaking numbers and for the creative team to design immense staging. The multi-dimensional and magical world of Cavalia Odysseo is conjured through images of the most beautiful landscapes from around the world, projected onto an 8,400-square-foot screen, a

feast for the eyes with staggering effects created by state-of-the-art scenery. Cavalia Odysseo’s technical grid, worthy of the largest permanent installations in Las Vegas, New York or London, can support 80 tons of equipment for the stage needs of the show, including a ma-

jestic life-sized merry-go-round. During the breathtaking finale, a vertiginous virtual waterfall overhangs a lake made possible by an underground drain system that releases 40,000 gallons of recycled water onto the stage, in which horses, riders and artists join to frolic, leaving behind them the traces of their splashes—and an astonished audience. The White Big Top is just one part of a larger ensemble; the Cavalia Odysseo village will take shape over the next few weeks and consists of five tents: the White Big Top, the stable tent, the Rendez-Vous VIP tent, the warm-up & artistic tent, and the kitchen tent serving the 200 permanent employees. In total, 110 semi-trailer trucks will be required to transport the world’s largest touring production to Scottsdale. Cavalia Odysseo is a veritable revolution in live entertainment that marries the

Despite the introduction of stem cell therapy to the equine industry and the barrage of success stories following in its wake, many questions continue to plague equine researchers, veterinarians, and owners of injured horses. Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use.For example, from where should stem cells be harvested, bone marrow or adipose tissue? Should stem cells be cultured, should a commercial kit be used so that stem cells can be injected quickly into the horse, or should a combination of both be employed? Would fetal-derived stem cells be a better option? “Stem cell therapy has become a common treatment modality for a variety of musculoskeletal injuries in horses, including bowed tendons. Injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendon, among others, are notoriously challenging to heal, require months of lay-up, and are prone to reinjury. Stem cell research suggests improved healing rates and decreased chances of reinjury following therapy rather than relying on rest and rehabilitation alone,” explained Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER) in Versailles, Kentucky. In human medicine, many parents elect to “bank” stem cells from fetal tissues at the time of

birth. Still not as popular in the equine industry, one recent study* shows that stem cells derived from fetal tissues rather than an older horse’s own bone marrow or adipose tissue might, in fact, be more effective when treating an injury. In their publication, the researchers reported that stem cells derived from amniotic membranes or the material contained within the umbilical cord, referred to as Wharton’s jelly, had beneficial properties compared with bone or adipose-derived adult stem cells. “The stem cells from fetal tissues are intermediate between embryonic and adult cells, and they appear to have an improved ability over adult stem cells to spur the development of a variety of tissue types, such as bone and cartilage,” Whitehouse said. Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use, such as the management of musculoskeletal conditions later in life. “Another way of protecting a horse’s musculoskeletal system is through the prophylactic administration of oral joint health supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid,” advised Whitehouse. “KER offers products containing each of these key ingredients that can help protect joints and soft tissues from injury and slow the progression of osteoarthritis.”

Stick with Condition Scoring for Managing Your Horse’s Weight

While many owners do not worry excessively about their horses’ body weight, others fret and fuss, frequently altering diets and exercise regimes to maintain optimal body condition. But how do you know when you’ve reached your goal? The researchers explained that accurately assessing body fat will help develop nutrition models

and establish welfare thresholds. According to a recent study on the subject*, there are several options for measuring body fat, including scoring body condition, measuring rump fat thickness, and other methods necessitating special equipment. One such example includes deuterium oxide fat analysis that requires an injection of deuterium oxide into the bloodstream and later collecting a blood sample to analyze the deuterium oxide content via gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Not exactly standard equipment on a vet truck! Unlike rump fat thickness and laboratory methods, body condition scoring serves as both a quick and economical method of assessing body fat. The questions remain, however: Does body condition accurately reflect body fat, and does body condition apply to any breed of horse? In the study, researchers used the three techniques mentioned above to determine if condition scoring was, in fact, a reasonable method to assess body fat. Using stock-type horses, the researchers demonstrated that measuring body condition using the Henneke nine-point scale, but not rump fat thickness “was a valuable predictor of body fat in stock-type horses.” The researchers explained that accurately assessing body fat will help develop nutrition models and establish welfare thresholds.

“Maintaining an appropriate body weight helps horses lead healthier lives, decreases the chance of developing hormonal imbalances that can lead to insulin resistance, equine metabolic syndrome, and laminitis, and improves reproductive efficiency,” added Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). To optimize your horse’s health and ensure all nutritional needs are being met, consult with a KER nutrition advisor today. *Ferjak, E.N., C.A. Cavinder, D.D. Burnett, et al. 2017. While details related to the 1100-page conference report on the final legislation continue to emerge, please see the below highlights that will have the most direct impact on the horse industry:

Business Provisions

Corporate Taxes : The new tax law reduces the corporate income tax

rate from 35% to 21% and takes effect January 1. AHC members filing as “C corporations,” which are generally identified by the suffix, “Inc.,” will see an immediate reduction in their official, or statutory tax rate. AHC members filing as “C corporations” would include racetracks, makers of pharmaceuticals and agricultural equipment, and large breeding operations governed by officers and a board of directors, among others. While many policy experts believe that the new tax code will be easier to navigate from a business perspective, corporate taxpayers’ effective liability will vary to the extent they are able to utilize the new code’s remaining deductions, some of which are outlined below. Small Business, “Pass-Through” Deduction : The Tax Cut and Jobs Act establishes a 20% deduction for the first $315,000 of joint income, or $157,500 for individual filers, from “pass-through” entities such as partnerships, sole proprietorships and S corporations. This new provision could benefit small businesses that generally report incomes at or near the new threshold level. While various types of “pass-throughs” constitute the fastest growing segment of AHC members, they also include the majority of U.S. farms. According to Department of Agriculture data, 85% of domestic agriculture production comes from “pass through” entities. Bonus Depreciation of Equipment: The House and Senate conference report includes 100% bonus depreciation – an increase from the current 50% rate through December 31, 2022, for property placed in service after September 27, 2017. Beginning in 2023, bonus depreciation is reduced from 100%, to 80% in 2024, then falls by 20% increments each year through 2026. Farm equipment used in a business operation, breeding stock and according to a preliminary reviews of the final language, race horses will benefit from the robust deduction. Losses at the Racetracks : The final law preserves the deduction of losses “sustained … on wagering transactions to the extent of the gains” realized “during the taxable year.” However, the law clarifies that the “limitation on losses from wagering transactions applies not only to the actual costs of the wages, but to other expenses incurred by the individual in connection with the conduct of that individual’s gambling activity.” For example, the law subjects the deduction for travel expenses to and from a racetrack to the cap established by the amount of the gains. Like many of the deductions in the bill, the provision sunsets after 2025. Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) – The new law repeals the corporate AMT, ending the need to calculate tax liability twice for a single filing.

Individual Provisions

Estate Tax: The final law ultimately preserves the estate tax, but doubles the current exemptions of $5.49 million for individuals and $10.98 million for married couples. Raising the statutory threshold will reduce the number of farms and family businesses subject to the tax. It will also spare many family-run businesses from jumping over accounting hurdles to avoid the tax altogether. State and Local Taxes (SALT) – The tax law includes a significantly downsized, itemized deduction for up to $10,000 of state and local property taxes. This provision – which eliminates the unlimited, longstanding deduction for state, sales and local property taxes – may pose challenges for AHC members who file returns in high-tax states next year. Mortgage Interest: The new law reduces the current $1 million cap on mortgage interest to $750,000, which the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will apply to homes purchased after January 1, 2018. Charitable Contributions: In cases of individual cash contributions, the final law increases the percentage-limit deduction from the current rate of 50% of the donor’s adjusted gross income (AGI) to 60% of AGI.

Insulin resistance is an associated risk factor in laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, and equine Cushing’s disease, with aged horses at particular risk. This study was designed to examine whether short term adaptation to a high fat diet would affect insulin sensitivity in aged horses. During the three-period study, three Thoroughbred geldings were given mixed grass/legume hay and unfortified sweet feed for the first and third periods. In the second period they were given the same amount of hay plus hay cubes and 600 ml of soybean oil. After administration of a dextrose solution by nasogastric tube, glucose tolerance tests were conducted. This was done on days 28 and 35 of each period. Glucose was higher in the FAT group at 120 minutes compared to horses on the carbohydrate diet. Insulin in the FAT group was significantly lower at 5, 60, 90, and 120 minutes compared to horses on the carbohydrate diet. Horses on the high-fat diet produced less insulin and took longer to clear glucose from their blood. The results of this study suggest that feeding high fat to aged horses reduced insulin sensitivity compared to a moderate high-carbohydrate diet.

By avoiding feeding hay or feeding less hay by calving later – made possible because the cow’s needs are at its peak when the grass is at premium nutrition – we are leaving more room for profit. When inputs are factored in, the difference in sale prices have been minimal for any lighter-weight calves. Orthopedic Problems in Horses: Alternative Therapies

alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) as a “heterogenous group of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic philosophies and practices.” Common examples of CAVM include acupuncture, homeopathy, magnetic field therapy, phytotherapy, and nutraceutical support. Owners are encouraged to always consult a veterinarian to obtain a valid diagnosis and to discuss all treatment options prior to committing to a specific therapy.Despite the limited evidence backing up many of these practices in either veterinary or human medicine, horse owners still seek individuals willing to perform alternative therapies on their horses, especially for managing musculoskeletal conditions. Swiss researchers surveyed horse owners to determine how CAVM modalities are used in horses with orthopedic problems. Of the 170 horses described by survey respondents, 96 had lameness in one or more limb, 62 had back problems, and 12 had a combination of lameness and a back problem. Not only was CAVM used therapeutically, but owners also accepted various CAVM modalities for diagnostic purposes to help define the location or severity of the condition. This was especially true for horses with suspected back problems. Welding Projects include: Barns, “One of the most concerning aspects of this study was that most of the arenas, shades, stalls, mare motels, CAVM practitioners consulted by owners or caretakers were not veterinarfencing, gates and more. ians. LAS VEGAS – There’s just something about the bright lights of Las Vegas that Ryder Wright loves. Wright won four straight rounds, and five total, during his inaugural trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER in 2016. In his last five saddle bronc rides at this year’s event, the 19-year-old has three first-place finishes. The latest came in impressive fashion Thursday night in front of 16,810 rodeo fans at the Thomas & Mack Center. Wright scored 92 points aboard Powder River Rodeo’s Show Me Again – his first PRCA ride of at least 90 points – to win his third go-round of the 2017 WNFR. Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Have you ever considered feeding your horse stabilized rice bran but weren’t sure what it is, how to introduce it, or—perhaps most importantly—how to use it properly? Equine nutrition experts agree that stabilized rice bran is a valuable feed additive for some horses but, like any change in diet, must be added slowly and properly to avoid gastrointestinal problems. In a nutshell, “Stabilized rice bran is produced by harvesting the thin, brown layer of individual rice kernels located underneath the hull or outer shell and stabilizing that brown layer—or bran—to inhibit the enzyme lipase from breaking down the fat in the bran and stopping the rice bran from going rancid,” explained Clarissa BrownDouglas, Ph.D., equine nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (Australia).

Managing gastric ulcers; Providing a fat source to optimize coat health; and Helping modify some behavioral concerns (fat provides a cool, slow-release energy). Ready to try your hand at feeding stabilized rice bran? Consider these suggestions when planning an introduction: Be certain to purchase stabilized rice bran. Unstabilized rice bran is available but will go rancid quickly and cannot be stored for longer than 5–7 days, depending on heat and humidity. It is also important to not confuse stabilized rice bran with other rice products available for equine consumption, such as broken rice. Ensure the rice bran is fortified. Unstabilized rice bran is naturally high in phosphorus and low in calcium, which is considered an inverted calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Calcium is therefore added to quality products to remedy the problem. Choose a formulation (meal, pellet) that your horse accepts. Stabilized rice bran is generally palatable and easily accepted. Start feeding a small amount to a maximum of 4 lb (1.8 kg) per day. Consider consulting an equine nutritionist prior to instituting any dietary change, and discuss all components of the diet, including supplements, to ensure you are not double dipping.

Laminitis, Insulin Resistance, Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Fast Facts

Understanding insulin resistance, what role it plays in equine metabolic syndrome and the development of laminitis, and how these conditions impact the overall health of your horse can be confusing. To help owners and equine veterinarians alike better understand these conditions, a group of researchers reviewed the available literature, and summarized their findings. Laminitis due to altered insulin regulation is common in domestic equine populations and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality; The term “insulin dysregulation” is synonymous with insulin resistance, which is a term used to describe horses with either an abnormally elevated fasting level of insulin or an exaggerated insulin response after feeding nonstructural carbohydrates; Insulin resistance and obesity are central components of equine metabolic syndrome, a condition frequently found in horses and ponies predisposed to laminitis; Diet is believed to play an important role in the development of insulin resistance, probably because some horses overfed cereal-rich products, such as sweet feeds, became overweight also developed insulin dysregulation; That said, feeding cereal-rich diets can induce insulin dysregulation even if a horse or pony does not become obese in sensitive individuals; All overfed horses can develop a reduced sensitivity to insulin; Horses and ponies fed only one carbohydrate-rich meal a day had better insulin responses than horses and ponies fed multiple meals that potentially overstimulate insulin receptors; and Different breeds of horses with variable innate insulin sensitivities may also play a role in the development of equine metabolic syndrome. “The researchers concluded that diet certainly appears to play a role in insulin resistance, but further research is required to determine the relationship between obesity, diet, and insulin dysregulation,” Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., an equine nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER) summarized. To determine if your horse’s diet contains the right balance of carbohydrates, contact a KER nutritionist today. In addition, ensure your horse maintains an appropriate body condition score to help minimize insulin dysregulation and laminitis. *Bamford, N.J., S.J. Potter, C.L. Baskerville, et al. 2016. Kennedy Bryant and All Nite Spook

are the 2017 Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year Champions

Oklahoma City, November 30, 2017 - The grandstands stayed filled with supportive friends, families, and coaches throughout the day on Thursday, November 30, to see which competitor’s dream of becoming the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year would come true. At the end of the day, Kennedy Bryant the Adequan® Arena saw yet another run off. This time between Canadian Magalie Boulanger, representing Association Quebecoise de Reining Inc., and Kennedy Bryant, representing the Southwest Reining Horse Association. Both competitors scored a 216.5 in their first run, but it was Bryant who took the Adequan® NAAC Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year title in a field of 65 competitors, after earning a 220.5 in the run off. Bryant rode her own All Nite Spook (Smart Spook x Dun It Fri Dee Nite), an 8-yearold gelding, to the highest score since they have been together. “Becoming the Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year feels amazing,” Bryant said. “This goal was something that my trainer [NRHA Professional] Bud Lyon suggested, and ever since then, we have worked towards that goal. He wants to be a good horse and listen most of the time. Sometimes he doesn’t, but it makes these moments mean even more.” Lyon speaks highly of his intelligent and determined 16-year-old student who qualified for the finals in OKC at the South Central Affiliate Regional Championship (ARC). “Her memory retention is her best asset,” he said. “I can tell her something one time, and she files that concept away and immediately knows how to implement it. Her ability to process information and put it into action is incredible.” Bryant also won the Adequan® NAAC Rookie Level 2 out of 63 competitors, the $200-added NRHA Rookie Level 2, and NRHA Rookie Level 1. “This moment was possible because of my parents, family, friends, and trainers,” said Bryant. “They all helped me get here, and I could not have done it without them.” Boulanger and FS Hollywoodwrangler (Starlights Wrangler x MJ Malibu Barbie) took reserve honors in the Adequan® NAAC Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year, NAAC Rookie Level 2, and NRHA Rookie Level 1 after the run off. “I am very happy,” said Boulanger, representing the Eastern Canada (ARC). “We have been together three years, and it has been fantastic the entire time. We get along so well, and I just love him.” The 9-year-old gelding is owned by Boulanger and was bred by Bill and Patty Fingland.

Regenerative Therapies for Laminitic Horses

Laminitis can strike at any time, contributing to pain, loss of function, poor quality of life, and economic losses associated with treatment. Medical therapies can help some affected horses, yet many cases remain unresponsive to treatment. The researchers found neither short- nor long-term adverse reactions following injection and, importantly, all horses showed improvement in blood flow, structure, and function of the hoof.Given the impact of laminitis on the equine industry, owners and veterinarians are often willing to try novel treatments, including administration of stem cells and plateletrich plasma (PRP). “These regenerative therapies have traditionally been used for treating tendon injuries, wounds, and even joint disease. More recently, however, veterinarians have been exploring the use of these treatment modalities in laminitic horses with reported success,” explained Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). While horse owners are fortunate to have these treatment options available, there is little science supporting the use of stem cells or PRP for laminitis in horses. To determine if these therapies benefit affected animals, a group of Italian scientists used a combination of adipose-derived stem cells and PRP on nine horses with chronic laminitis*. All horses had naturally occurring laminitis and were previously treated unsuccessfully with conventional therapies. The horses were administered the stem-cell/PRP slurry intravenously in a digital vein. Injection was repeated once monthly for three consecutive months. The researchers found neither short- nor long-term adverse reactions following injection and, importantly, all horses showed improvement in blood flow, structure, and function of the hoof. All nine horses reportedly returned to a comfortable quality of life. Other ways to maintain healthy hooves in horses to avoid life-threatening bouts of laminitis include routine farrier, avoidance of sudden access to lush pastures or high-grain feeds, and maintenance of optimal body condition scores to minimize the development of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. “In addition, a quality nutritional supplement designed to support hoof health and help with the healing process can be fed to horses with laminitis,” shared Crandell. “KER offers Bio•Bloom PS, a product that contains biotin, methionine, iodine, chelated zinc, lecithin, and essential fatty acids to promote healthy hoof growth and resilient hoof horn.” *Angelone, M., V. Conti, C. Biacca, et al. 2017. The contribution of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-rich plasma to the treatment of chronic equine laminitis: a proof of concept. New Compound to Manage

Equine Ulcers

Endoscopic improvement was seen as early as 14 days after administration, according to the company Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. announced that its subsidiary, US Compounding, has developed a compound to manage ulcers in horses. A study, utilizing US Compounding’s drug formulation, was conducted in approximately 50 racehorses. Gastric endoscopy was performed at Day 0 and any time between Days 14 and 21. The drug was administered after the first endoscopy as a paste given orally for 30 days. Endoscopic improvement was seen as early as 14 days. In more than 95 percent of the horses, the ulcers were shown to be clinically healed, as confirmed by endoscopy, with a reduction in gastric ulcer recovery times. The company has filed a patent application covering the compounded product; a manuscript is in preparation.

Gene Therapy for Tendon, Ligament Injuries in Horses

Even with extensive rest and appropriate rehabilitation equine tendon injuries frequently recur. Some owners rely on the “kitchen sink” approach in an effort to help their horses, mixing complementary and regenerative therapies with traditional approaches. Despite the best care, recurring tendon injuries prematurely end many athletic careers. Products traditionally classified as joint supplements may also benefit tendons and ligaments.“Regenerative therapies such as stem cells and platelet-rich plasma have helped horses return to athletic function following a soft tissue injury, but equine researchers and veterinarians know that we can still do better,” explained Laura Petroski, B.V.M.S., a veterinarian for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). A novel approach to treating therapies was recently described by a group of scientists from the United Kingdom. Their technique involved using gene therapy to create specific genes that, once injected into the horse, produce proteins that help heal the injury.

To test whether gene therapy is a viable option for soft-tissue injuries, two horses with naturally occurring lesions were selected to study. DNA encoding the two therapeutic proteins was injected directly into the lesions (one was a suspensory ligament injury, the other had a defect in the superficial digital flexor tendon) within three months of lameness onset. “Both horses experienced full recovery and complete restoration of the affected ligament and tendon based on repeated ultrasound examinations,” said Petroski. “

“The use of recombinant proteins and gene therapy is the most advanced and promising approach in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in human medicine. To date, direct gene therapy of equine tendon injuries has never been employed,” explained the researchers. In the study, the researchers selected two “therapeutic” proteins: vascular endothelial growth factor 164 and fibroblast growth factor 2. Both of these proteins were chosen due to their roles in restoring normal tissue strength and elasticity instead of producing weak scar tissue.

The ranch is surrounded by the forest and knowing all along that there will never be any developments near by made unique and the gorgeous views, made this a very special place for the couple. Although secluded from civilization, the amazing Apache Lake Resort and Marina is just a couple of miles down the road and very easy to get to. The combination of the ranch amenities and location made it an absolute perfect place to live!! The good-times rolled until, unfortunately, Richard passed away a few years ago and the fantast just wasn’t the same without Carrie’s beloved husband. The tough decision to sell the ranch has been made. If you’ld be interested in seeing it call Larry Goldstein at 602-989-4200.
