Terri was born February 2, 1969 to Denny and Reanee Wall in Burlington, CO. Growing up, Terri participated in various school activities including volleyball, basketball and rodeo. She was a member of the state basketball championship team in 1987.

After graduating from Eads High School in 1987, Terri attended Northern Junior College in Sterling, CO from 1987 – 1989. She was also a member of the NJC rodeo team. Upon completion of her associate’s degree, Terri attended University of Southern Colorado earning a bachelor degree in accounting in 1991. Terri moved to Tucson, AZ in 1992 working various jobs. During this time, she met many people who would become close friends.

In 2001 she met Destry Haught and they were married February 14, 2002 in Las Vegas, NV and she was blessed with stepson Byron Haught. During this union they had two children. Arena ReaneeMarie was born January 9, 2003 in Payson, AZ. Denny JoeRay was born January 20, 2006 in Casa Grande, AZ. The Tonto Cowboy Church will remain Terri’s legacy for generations to come and through her dedication and devotion will continue to touch the lost. MIKE WOOD INTERVIEW

•You have a large non-pro (Amateur) group of riders. What is the key to keeping so many folks happy, while managing your own ranch? I think the first part to success when dealing with clients is communication. I try to discuss goals and plans with each client and stay on the same page with them. Every client and every horse get special attention, with so many, it isn’t an easy task. My partner Roper Curtiss is involved keeping everything running smoothly and organized as far as shows, scheduling, vet work, office work and many other tasks. This allows me to spend more time in the arena with clients and horses. Another key to success is having a fun and learning environment in the arena. I love giving lessons and watching my clients learn and enjoy their horse. There is not much that is as fun, as riding a cutting horse! •How good of riding skills does one require before getting involved in Cutting? I have had all sorts of people start cutting with me, from very experienced to very novice. I have had beginners of all ages that have never been on a horse before that wanted to start cutting and went on to become a top 15 finisher in the NCHA World Standings. Anyone can start cutting, having had previous horse experience helps but is not necessary to enjoy the sport. •How long does it take for a beginner to get comfortable in the saddle, on a cow? Every person’s level of comfort varies. If a person starts cutting that has competed in roping or cow horse, the transition to cutting is fairly easy and may only take a couple of rides to be comfortable. If someone is used to trail riding or a slower discipline, then it may take a little longer. The adrenaline rush of working a cow is well worth the experience. •Are your riding reactions to the cow instinctive, ingrained and automatic, or a reactive thought-out response or learned? I would say that is a reactive thought-out response that is learned and hopefully becomes instinctive. In other words, when first learning to work a cow, you have to think about where you are to be in control of the cow. As time goes on and you gain experience, an instinctive response to the cow puts yourself in proper position to control quicker and easier. •In pictures one can see a certain look in a Cutting Horse’s face when they are down in the dirt focused on that cow, it looks as if they are enjoying themselves. Are they? Most definitely! The breeding of horses has become so specialized these days. Cutting horses are bred to have certain instincts on a cow, to react to a cow. The ones that are champions enjoy their job and it shows. •Please tell us a bit about yourself: lifetime earnings, building and running your own ranch, etc.…. After graduating from ASU in 1990 I went to work for Al Dunning as his assistant trainer. After 10 years with Al, I started my own training business here in Scottsdale Arizona where I specialize in training and showing cutting horses. I have a large group of amateurs and Non-Pros who rider and show with me. I am an NCHA Hall of Fame Rider with $2,100,000+ in Lifetime Earnings. I have also trained and coached over 15 NCHA World Champions as well as numerous NCHA Western Nationals Champions and Limited Aged Event Champions. •What is your best advice to your younger self that will help Trainers and Non-Pros today? Do it because you love it! 16

Whether you’re a seasoned horse show veteran, fan of the race track, backyard horse enthusiast or simply someone dreaming of someday owning a horse, an AQHA membership will benefit you in countless ways.

Dear Members, The COVID19 pandemic has made me feel like a pioneer. Instead of battling mountains, weather and wild country to reach the land of milk and honey, I am trying to make it to the other side of an epidemic curve and if I make

it, I will emerge a modern woman.

JULY 2020

15616 N. 83rd Way Scottsdale, AZ 85260

Because of the pandemic, I have learned new skills and tried new things. I judged and exhibited in virtual shows for the first time. I created my own Youtube channel and learned to upload videos and share them. I am preparing presentations for Zoom meetings and conducting most business online. If I only had a flying car, I could be a Jetson! So, how do horses fit into a modern world? Mine keep me grounded and give me purpose as I socially distance myself from most people. I think horses are more important than ever now and I can see by the great number of exhibitors in online shows that you agree. As live shows (this is a new term I have started using for just plain shows as we knew them pre-COVID19) are starting back up, I urge you to proceed carefully. If exhibitors are unwilling to comply with USEF/show rules for public safety, it is likely live shows will be shut down again for a while longer. If you or your family members are at high risk for complications from COVID19, please consider staying home. If you are not at high risk and you attend live shows, take and use your mask when you’re not riding, social distance and most of all be respectful of others. Appreciate how much the show staff and facility staff have adapted to accommodate you and be able to host a show. If we can go the extra mile to heed public health protocol for events and keep each other safe, it is possible we could make it over the epidemic curve and who knows, maybe there will be flying horse vans in the future. I hope you, your loved ones and I can look back one day and be proud of how we made it through this pandemic like our predecessors were of surviving the Great Depression.

‘Yellowstone’ returns to Massive 4.2 Million Viewers On Paramount

Paramount Network’s flagship drama series Yellowstone has hit more ratings milestones. Sunday’s Season 3 premiere drew 4.2 million total viewers on Paramount Network, up 76% from the season 2 premiere. It also set ratings records across key demos, drawing a 1.78 rating in P18-49, up a whopping 127% from the Season 2 premiere, and a 2.4 rating in P2554, up 112% vs the Season 2 premiere on Paramount Network.

Across four networks (three Paramount Network telecasts and three simulcasts on CMT, TV Land & Pop) the Season 3 premiere drew 6.6 million total viewers to rank as the No. 1 most-watched cable premiere of 2020. Yellowstone also was the No. 1 most social cable ad supported program on Sunday, with 70,000 interactions up 54% from season two. This is the second consecutive year that Yellowstone‘s season premiere set record highs in both total viewers and key demos. Season 2 of Yellowstone was the #1 scripted series of the summer across cable and broadcast TV in the key P18-49 and P25-54 demos and the most-watched 2019 summer series on cable TV among total viewers. It’s also the brand’s most-watched scripted series ever and Viacom’s most-watched scripted series since 2010. Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Oscar winner Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. Paramount Network renewed the series for a fourth season in February, along with an announcement of Sheridan’s mega overall production and development deal with ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Brands, which includes Paramount Network.

The American Quarter Horse Association is proud to announce that it has surpassed registering 6 million horses in the Association’s 80-year history. AQHA officially reached 6 million registered horses on May 19, 2020. “Since 1940, AQHA has been paving the way for passionate horsemen and -women to come together in the name of the American Quarter Horse for the breed’s preservation, celebration and advancement,” said Craig

JULY 2020

Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “Today, we are fortunate to celebrate our breed with this historical milestone.” The previous milestone was reached on December 26, 2007, when AQHA hit 5 million registered horses. AQHA will partner with the American Quarter Horse Foundation to auction Registration No. 6000000 at the 2021 AQHA Convention in San Antonio. The Foundation will pay the full and current registration fee for registration and required DNA testing at the time the registration is enacted by the winning bidder from the auction proceeds. The winning bidder will receive a gift receipt for the remainder of the auction price, and these funds will be applied to the charitable programs implemented by the Foundation. More details about the auction will be available at www.aqha. com/convention at a later date.

Indy Roper Wins Level 4 Non Pro Championship on Spooks Show Time at NRHA Derby Presented by Markel Indy Roper was all smiles as she exited the Jim Norick Coliseum Arena on Friday evening, June 19, after her first run in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby presented by Markel Non Pro Finals.

Indy Roper Wins Level 4 Non Pro Championship on Spooks Show Time at NRHA Derby She knew her performance on Spooks Show Time was good, and when the score, a 222.5, was announced, the cheers were resounding. However, Roper had drawn number 2 in the Level 4 Non Pro Finals, meaning she had to sweat through 31 additional runs before she was declared the victor. When the last rider had cleared the arena, it became official: Indy

Roper had won her first Non Pro Derby Championship; several great prizes, including a year’s use of a beautiful Kyle Zanetti Trailer, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, Anderson Bean Boots, a custom Montana Silversmiths belt buckle, product from Classic Equine, and gift certificates to Platinum Performance, Bluebonnet Feeds, SmartPak, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery,

and CINCH; and a check for $18,800. Nominator Bobby Lewis will receive 5% of the total payout. “I’m speechless. When we started this, winning the Derby was on our bucket list. My dad and I sat down and wrote down what we wanted to accomplish, and this was it. I’ve had many ups and downs in that arena, and this is definitely the pinnacle,” Roper said. Spooks Show Time, nicknamed “Raymond,” is known for his big stops, so the run-in stop of pattern 10 fit him perfectly. “He ran in, stopped good, and backed up nice. We got through the turns, and then I knew I could push him hard. Like I said, his claim to fame is his stops, so the final three stops showed what he could do,” Roper said. Roper’s father, Tim, purchased Raymond in 2018 from NRHA Two Million Dollar Owner Rancho Oso Rio. “Andrea and Tish Fappani encouraged us to try him. I liked his demeanor because he’s fun to be around, and he’s smooth to ride,” Roper shared. Spooks Show Time is by NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Dolittle Lena. “He’s 7 now, so he’s done with his derbies, and he has a home for life at Roper Farms. I have twin nieces who are going to be over the moon that he’s coming back. We’ll take him back home and just enjoy him.” READ ONLINE FREE BridleandBit.com 34

During this Time of Crisis, Farmers For Innovation Launches a Farmers For Innovation Movement to Bring Back America together, Farmers for Innovation (FFI) released the following statement on launching the Farmers For Innovation movement as Americans look for solutions to recover from the economic crisis created by the pandemic of 2020. “These are challenging times. The pandemic has placed stress

upon the American economy unlike any other since the Great Depression. At the same time, the Coronavirus pandemic has inspired a reevaluation of America’s security and the country’s interests in the global economy. Our security and our capacity to produce and ensure our supply

chains are becoming inextricably linked. It is time to bring back these capabilities to America and to invest in innovative solutions that will perpetuate our own success as farmers by making our work more effective and more efficient,” said David Kolsrud, FFI’s Founder. “By working

can create a movement to empower farmers to make their money go farther and ultimately lead to the prosperity of rural Americans.” David Kolsrud is a lifelong farmer and military veteran who has spent 25 years in the renewable energy industry, with expertise in ethanol, biodiesel, and wind projects. He was the Cooperative Manager at Agri-Energy LLC in Luverne, MN from 1995 until its sale to GEVO in 2010. In 2006, Kolsrud formed DAK Renewable Energy and in 2011 founded The Funding Farm in order to invest in start-up companies. Kolsrud sees Farmers For Innovation’s mission as an investment in rural America’s future. By serving as a platform to motivate the government to incentivize farmers at scale, FFI plans to leverage rural America’s resources and create an investment fund to fuel companies that will transform farmers’ lives. These companies will develop direct and indirect applications of technology to the challenges that farmers are currently facing now or will have to confront. By investing in innovative technologies such as ag-tech, life sciences, robotics, clean energy, national security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, FFI will safeguard America’s security and ensure the livelihood of farmers and their families for generations. Farmers For Innovation wants Main Street to have a voice as loud as Wall Street. FFI will be a trusted partner to direct the investments of farmers to high-performing companies in multiple arenas with products and services that will ultimately perpetuate the success of Rural America.

By Hayley Keck What does an ulcer-prone horse look like? The first thing that comes to mind is the racehorse. He or she is young, travels often, runs its heart out and is fed massive amounts of feed in one day from the very beginning. This assumption is correct, since racehorses have the highest rate of ulcers at 90%.

Strategically Feeding the

Ulcer-prone Horse But the ugly truth is it could be your horse, too. After all, 60 to 90% of all performance horses suffer from gastric ulcers, many of which do not show symptoms. So how can we manage ulcers from day-to-day? Focus on the most important management practice: the diet.

Forage

For any horse, especially the ulcer-prone type, hay should always be available. Ulcers tend to flare up when the stomach is empty, and because we often feed two to three structured meals a day, this can happen frequently. Providing hay 24/7 allows the

horse to munch all day, which produces more saliva and naturally buffers the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Additionally, feeding a forage like alfalfa, which has higher protein and calcium levels, can help maintain the integrity of the stomach lining. If you have an overweight horse, consider providing it with a lower-calorie forage, like prairie hay that will not add excess calories but will still provide the same benefits mentioned above. Reduce Starch Horse feeds high in concentrated grains, like many of the fortified feeds that performance horses consume, are great for providing calories, but they are not ideal for the ulcer-prone horse because of their high levels of starch. If you have a performance horse that is prone to ulcers and requires a concentrated grain, the best idea is to break down feedings into three to four meals per day. Any longer than six hours in between feedings is too long and will allow for ulcer formulation. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals during the day will also reduce the amount of starch being fed in one meal as well as the amount of time the stomach is left empty, thus reducing the chance of ulcers.

Be Strategic

42

JULY 2020

Not only is what you feed important, but how you do it is equally as vital to your horse’s stomach comfort. Prolonging forage consumption, such as feeding hay in a hay net, can be helpful for the ulcerprone horse because it reduces the amount of time the stomach is empty and helps to naturally buffer the acid in the stomach. Additionally, feeding a daily preventative supplement like Vitalize® Alimend® will help your horse’s stomach stay comfortable. Alimend’s formula has a mucoadhesive effect that lines the stomach tissue and is designed to both repair and maintain the integrity of the stomach lining. It contains MHB3® Hyaluronan and Lion's Mane extract, which have both been proven in clinical research studies to have gastroprotective and healing effects. Alimend is administered with feed twice a day, so the horse receives 24/7 comfort without needing to alter the acidity of the stomach. Because it does not decrease stomach acid, it is ideal for long-term use.

Bob Littlefield: Editorial

Bob Littlefield

Dear Friends: I am asking for your vote for Scottsdale Mayor in the August 4th primary election.

During my three terms on the Scottsdale City Council I always supported the Equestrian community. I voted to protect and preserve equestrian zoning and to keep your property taxes low. I supported WestWorld and the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center. And I supported tourism and worked to attract new businesses and events (particularly equestrian events) to Scottsdale. I also supported the galleries, restaurants and shops in our Downtown that contribute to our economy and to Scottsdale’s unique reputation for arts and culture. I will continue these policies if I am elected Scottsdale Mayor.

I am the only candidate for Scottsdale Mayor who supported Proposition 420, the citizen initiative to protect the McDowell-Sonoran Preserve from commercial development.

These are important reasons why I believe Bridle & Bit readers should vote for me for Scottsdale Mayor. But the 2020 campaign for Mayor is like no other in the history of Scottsdale. Covid-19 has stressed our economy and our personal lives. Even worse, we are now faced with riots and looting which further stresses our economy and threatens our sense of safety and security. While protecting Scottsdale's special character and high quality of life will continue to be big issues, fiscal responsibility and public safety will be on every voter's mind. The overriding issue will be who is best qualified to lead Scottsdale forward through the turbulent times ahead. I am that candidate. I was elected to the Scottsdale City Council three times. As Chairman of Scottsdale's City Council Budget Subcommittee and a member of Scottsdale's Economic Development Subcommittee, I have the knowledge and experience in municipal finance our next Mayor absolutely must have. Also, as a member of the Audit Committee I learned where the leaks in our budget are and what needs to be done to plug them. In addition to my time as a manager for several large corporations, I also founded and ran a successful Scottsdale-based computer company, so I understand how business works and I know about leadership and setting priorities. And, as a two-tour Vietnam combat veteran, I know about persevering in tough times. Belts at City Hall will need to be tightened in the foreseeable future, and that means setting priorities. When the tax dollars are flowing freely it is easy to give everybody a slice of the pie. Real leadership that is willing to say “no when necessary will be needed in Scottsdale's future to make sure that the money we do have is spent wisely on those things such as public safety and health and economic development, that are most important. Scottsdale's special character and high quality of life are still important issues, not just for our residents but for our tourism industry which will need a lot help to recover. As Mayor I will, as I did when I was a Councilman, support only quality, character-appropriate development that pays for itself. And I will apply that standard to all parts of our beautiful city. Scottsdale needs a Mayor who can hit the ground running, can make the tough decisions, and who will lead rather than wait for others to set the pace. If you want leadership that will take bold action and be responsible with the dollars of Scottsdale taxpayers, and keep you and your family safe, please vote for me in the primary election on August 4th. If you have any questions or would like more information, feel free to contact me. I would be honored to receive your vote. Bob Littlefield www.BobLittlefield.com

How to Mitigate the Risk of Post-Foaling Colic

By Hayley Keck

We know that with a change in routine, the microbiota of the equine gut will change as well, causing a shift that can sometimes lead to colic. Often, we recognize those “changes” as a long haul in the trailer, a hard day of competition or the wrong feed being given to your horse. While these are all reasons the gut flora can be altered, what about the change that happens to millions of mares every year? You guessed it – foaling is one big change that causes colic in many postpartum mares. Why does colic occur after birth?

One of the most common causes of post-foaling colic stems from the stress of giving birth. After delivery, a shift in the microbial population in the gut can occur, causing the good pathogens in the gut to die and allowing the bad ones to flourish. We often associate this microbial shift occurring in our competition horses; however, it is important to remember this happens at any type of stress, including mommas with newborns at their side. How do we prevent this type of colic? Stabilizing the microbe population in the gut is something you can do in helping both mare and foal. During this time, it is important to minimize any outside stressors that may trigger anxiety. Be ready for delivery – maintain a clean, quiet and spacious environment for your mare to feel comfortable in while giving birth. For the unavoidable stress, Vitalize® Equine Recovery Gel is here to assist. It is a unique blend of Amaferm®, MOS, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to help your horse recover after stressful situations. More specifically, the research-proven prebiotic Amaferm will help the good bugs in the gut grow, and MOS will help defend against the bad pathogens, which increases appetite and creates an overall “good gut feeling.” By combining these two ingredients in one handy tube, you are able to combat the threat of an imbalanced gut ratio and possible colic, improve comfort level, and maintain proper weight post-foaling. How much do I give? We recommend administering one tube of gel (30 mL) to the mare immediately after foaling, and anytime post-foaling she seems uncomfortable or stressed. It can be given two to four times each day. If administering to the foal during digestive upset, antibiotic treatment, worming, or vaccinations, begin by giving 10 mL and gradually increase the dosage as he or she grows. When it is time for weaning, administer 15 mL of paste twice per day during the transition period, since leaving mom is perhaps the most stressful time in its life.

“I commend President Trump’s intent to nominate William Perry Pendley who has been a leader at the Bureau of Land Management for nearly a year. He’s doing a great job, including acquiring more than 25,000 acres of public land for expanded recreational access," said Secretary Bernhardt. Mr. Pendley currently serves as the Bureau of Land Management's Deputy Director for Policy and Programs, exercising the authority of the director. He also has decades of experience in federal land management policy as an attorney. Born and raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mr. Pendley received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics and Political Science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, after which he received his J.D. from the University of Wyoming College of Law, where he was Senior Editor on Land and Water Law Review. Mr. Pendley has a distinguished background of public and private service, having been an attorney to former Senator Clifford P. Hansen (Wyoming) and to the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee. During the Reagan Administration, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy and Minerals of the Department of the Interior, where he authored President Reagan's National Minerals Policy and Exclusive Economic Zone proclamation. Mr. Pendley was also a consultant to former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman, Jr. and was a part of a private legal practice in the Washington, D.C. area before returning to the West in 1989 to become the President of the Mountain States Legal Foundation. He presided over the Mountain States Legal Foundation for nearly 30 years before joining the BLM last year.

BLM TO CONDUCTS RANGE CREEK WILD HORSE ROUND-UP

PRICE, Utah — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Price Field Office will soon begin operations to manage wild horse populations by gathering them from within and around the Range Creek Herd Management Area in Carbon County. The gather will begin on July 1 and is expected to last approximately six days.

The BLM will gather approximately 125 horses from Federal, State and private lands. The appropriate management level for this HMA is 75-125 animals and the current population 184 horses, which is projected to reach 220 with the addition of the 2020 foals. Horses removed from the range will be transported to the Axtell Off-Range Contract Wild Horse Facility in Axtell, Utah.

Risk Factors of Enterolithiasis Among Horses in California Enteroliths are intestinal calculi that result in intestinal obstruction and colic in horses. Equine enterolithiasis occurs worldwide, but the disease is particularly prevalent in some geographic locations, including California. The objectives of this study were to evaluate dietary and environmental risk factors for the disease. This was accomplished through a case-control study by comparing horses with colic from enterolithiasis presenting to the University of California, Davis VMTH, to horses with colic of other causes. Data were collected on 61 horses with enterolithiasis and 75 controls via evaluation of patient records and questionnaires completed by owners at the time of admission. Following multiple logistic regression analysis, the following factors were found to be significantly associated with enterolithiasis: feeding > or = 50% of the diet as alfalfa; feeding <50% of the diet as oat hay; feeding <50% of the diet as grass hay; and lack of daily access to pasture grazing.

NRCHA Derby Champions Crowned in Scottsdale

A thrilling day of reined cow horse action on Saturday, June 13, wrapped up the main event at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby. Open and non pro riders took center stage at the WestWorld of Scottsdale in sunny Arizona. The top combined score rode away with the prestigious NRCHA Derby Champion title and a share of more than $330,000.

Derby Open Champion To say it was a special night for the Justin Wright Performance Horses/ Wrights Quarter Horses crew would be an understatement. Several Santa Maria, California, professionals claimed spots in the clean-slate finals and are taking home major limited age event titles. NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Justin Wright showed Scooter Kat (Kit Kat Sugar x Scooters Daisy Dukes x Dual Smart Rey) to the 2020 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby Open championship title with an incredible 673.5 composite. Wright and Scooter Kat, owned by Eric Freitas, won all three go rounds of the Open Finals: 224 herd, 224.5 rein and 225 cow. The winning team rode with $33,550, a custom saddle by Bob's Custom Saddles, presented by Heaven Sent Ranch, a Gist Silversmiths custom buckle, sponsored by the Arizona Reined Cow Horse Association, a Preston Williams custom snaffle bit, UltraCruz product, a Handmade Exotics gift certificate and product from Platinum Performance, Together, the duo have earned several prestigious titles throughout the 2015 stallion's career, including the 2019 NRCHA Stakes Open championship and 2018 NRCHA Snaffle Bit FuturityÂŽ reserve open championship. Tonight's win put the stallion's lifetime NRCHA earnings over $250,000. Derby Intermediate Open Champion Claiming the NRCHA Derby Intermediate Open win was Jared Jones aboard PRF Peptos Smart Cat (WR This Cats Smart x She Smokes Smart x Senors Lil Brudder). Jones, from Santa Maria, California, earned $9,981 for his 660 composite (217.5 herd/ 219 rein/ 223.5 cow). The 4-year-old stallion is owned by Tori Simons.

Derby Non-Pro Champion

Derby Intermediate & Novice Non Pro Champion After capturing the Derby Amateur championship earlier in the week, Erin Mendes piloted Jans Shiney Rey to the Intermediate and Novice Non Pro titles. The 652 composite (218 herd/ 213.5 rein/ 220.5 cow) in the clean-slate finals also placed Mendes reserve in the Non Pro. The duo collected over $11,000 in winnings, two Gist Silversmiths custom buckles and Platinum Performance product. The 2015 mare, who she owns with her husband, Marcel, is sired by Jans Rey Cuatro and out of Shiney Bit Of Ivory, by Shining Spark.

Toni Heath & Smokum Every Time, owned by her husband Dan Heath

Derby Limited Open Champion Taking home the NRCHA Derby Limited Open title to Weatherford, Texas, is Daniel Sanchez and Reyny Day Nickle (Shiners Nickle x Tootsie Rey x Dual Rey).Sanchez piloted Donna Russo's 2015 stallion, sired by Shiners Nickle and out of Tootsie Rey, by Dual Rey, to a 656 composite 64

(219 herd/ 217 rein/ Derby Open Champion 220 cow). The win was NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Justin accompanied with a $4,414 Wright & Scooter Kat, paycheck. The team also owned by Eric Freitas earned $5,935 for their third place finish in the Intermediate Open Finals. Derby Non Pro Champion Toni Heath captured the 2020 National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby Non Pro championship title aboard Smokum Every Time. The Oregon-based non pro piloted Smokum Every Time (One Time Pepto x Smokums Dream x Smokums Prize), a homebred horse owned by her husband, Dan Heath, to a 655 composite in the clean-slate finals. Heath marked a 214 in the herd work and 218.5 in the rein work. Her high fence work score of 222.5 sealed the deal on the win and $7,376. The champion's prizes included a saddle by Bob's Custom Saddles, a Gist Silversmiths custom buckle, a gift certificate to Handmade Exotics, product from Platinum Performance, a straw hat compliments of Shorty's Caboy Hattery and UltraCruz product.

The 2020 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby presented by Markel was expecting a subdued look and feel. The Oklahoma State Fair implemented new protocols because of COVID-19. This included increased stall spacing, face mask requirements for staff, mandatory social distancing, and closing the event to the public.

All those measures were followed, but as the event unfolded it became clear that there was nothing subdued about the size of the show or the quality of the competition. The 2020 NRHA Derby presented by Markel became the largest in NRHA history. Not only was there a record number of horses, riders, and entries, the total purse for the show was also record-breaking, surpassing $1.1 million. The combined payout for the Open and Non Pro Derbies set another record at $1,012,581. The Non Pro Derby had an alltime high payout of $354,620. The Open Derby had the thirdhighest payout in history, awarding $657,961. “Our members were very happy that we were able to have this show and their enthusiasm was felt throughout,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock. “Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all the exhibitors for their spirit of camaraderie and cooperation. Not only was it a huge show – it was a great one!” That off-the-charts momentum continued in the Adequan® Arena, where the traditional horse show classes sometimes went well into the night or even the early hours of the next morning. NRHA Events Manager Cheryl Cody said, “When the unprecedented entries became apparent for the first weekend, we were able to shorten two extremely long days by showing concurrently in Arena 6. Once the Derby competition began, we could not do that.

“We are excited to officially launch these six new classes that the AQHA Show, IT and Project Management departments worked diligently to complete for our members,” said Justin Billings, chief show officer. “The additional classes allow exhibitors from English, western and ranchhorse disciplines new options to compete with their American Quarter Horses. The classes are now available for show management to add to AQHA-sanctioned events, which will be held pending local, state and federal mandates.”

FEI Tribunal hands

Sh Abdul Aziz Bin Faisal Al Qasimi Record sanction in Horse Abuse Case

The FEI Tribunal has imposed record sanctions in an Endurance horse abuse and anti-doping violation case in which the horse was fatally injured, sentencing the athlete Sh Abdul Aziz Bin Faisal Al Qasimi (UAE) to a 20-year suspension and fines of CHF 17,500. The athlete was also ordered to pay CHF 15,000 towards the costs of the proceedings. The case involved the horse Castlebar Contraband (FEI ID 103UO95/NED), ridden by Sh Abdul Aziz Bin Faisal Al Qasimi (FEI ID 10031263/UAE) at the CE1* in Fontainebleau (FRA) on 15 October 2016.

Castlebar Contraband suffered an open fracture to its front right cannon bone during the event and had to be euthanised. Blood samples collected from the horse post mortem revealed the presence of the Controlled Medication Substance Xylazine, which is used as a sedative, analgesic and muscle relaxant but is prohibited in competition. The substance, which is rapidly excreted from the body, is known to be used in Endurance to lower the heart rate. No valid Veterinary Form, the equine equivalent of a Therapeutic Use Exemption, exists for this Substance. The FEI Tribunal accepted the explanation of the Treating Veterinarian who performed the euthanasia that she had followed a standard protocol which did not include the use of Xylazine, refuting the claim by the defendant’s legal team that Xylazine had been used in the euthanasia process. During the hearing, FEI Veterinary Director Dr Göran Åkerström stated that nerve blocking removes the “very fundamental protective function of sensitivity” and increases the risk of catastrophic injury. This is especially relevant for fractures that are due to bone fatigue (stress fractures) as a horse will not show any signs of pain, such as lameness, while under the influence of an injected substance. The post mortem report revealed the appearance of multiple lesions with a highly targeted location, consistent with recent injections, demonstrating that the horse had been nerve blocked (desensitised) in training, and both before and during the competition. This desensitisation, together with osteoarthritis in the right front fetlock joint, resulted in stress fractures that ultimately caused the catastrophic injury. As a result, the FEI Tribunal ruled that the athlete had committed horse abuse and that the Equine Controlled Medication (ECM) Rules had been violated, and imposed the strongest sanctions in FEI history. The athlete was suspended for 20 years in total – 18 years for the horse abuse and two years for the ECM Rule violation. The suspension commenced from the date of the Decision, 3 June 2020, and will run until 27 May 2040. 74

Sweeps Green Reiner Classes on

SS Spyderman

It’s been a good week for Logan Flaherty. Just days ago he and SS Spyderman won both Green Reiner classes, and he returned to the Adequan® Arena on the last day of competition to do it again. “He was good for showing three times in a row,” the 9-year-old said. He and the 12-year-old gelding marked a 140 to win the second slate and secure the high point buckle. His father, NRHA Professional Committee Chairman Patrick Flaherty, said, “I told him to go faster than he did the other day, but he didn’t. I guess he went just the right speed.” Logan shared he didn’t change anything from the previous day showing and prepared his horse like he always does. SS Spyderman, by NRHA Twelve Million Dollar Sire Topsail Whiz and out of Chics Velvet Lady, is owned by Jenny Ricotta. “I thank my dad, and I thank Jenny Ricotta for leasing him to me,” Logan said. Patrick added, “We really thank Marco and Jenny Ricotta. We were looking hard for a horse for him this year, and having trouble finding one when Jenny let us try him. We are lucky to have this horse to show. He’s turning into a really special horse for our family.”

Keep Your Horse Healthy in The Heat & During Travel Summer is here! The longer days full of bright sunshine are perfect for spending the maximum amount of time outside with your horse. Warmer temperatures, humidity and extra trailer time may require special attention to certain areas of equine health: hydration and thermoregulation, allergies and immunity.

Staying Hydrated

• 8 to 20
Horses will stop to drink water 8 to 20 times each day depending on temperature, humidity and amount of work or exercise.
 • 5 to 10 - An average-sized mature horse will drink between 5 to 10 gallons per day at a moderate temperature of 68°F.
 • 1 / Hour - Working horses should be offered water at least

List Your Property with a REALTOR that understands Horse Property Values and How to Sell them!

once an hour during extended periods of exercise. • 3x more - During work in hot, humid environments, a horse will need to increase his water requirement up to three times that of maintenance.

Healthy Hydration Tips

• Provide a plain, white salt block or loose salt at all times. Horses will freely consume 50 grams per day on average of NaCl, satisfying the needs of most horses in moderate work. • Fresh, clean water should always be available. Electrolyte supplementation will increase water consumption, as will hot, humid weather conditions. • Supplementary electrolytes

Fair Housing Statement

may be necessary to replace those minerals lost in sweat from hot temperatures, humidity or heavy work.

Signs of Dehydration

• Pinch Test — the skin on your horse’s neck doesn’t quickly return to its place after pinching. • Mucous Membranes — the horse’s mucous membranes in the nose and mouth are dry or red. • Capillary Refill — when you press your finger on the gum, the spot should change from white to red quickly. The longer it takes the capillaries to refill shows the severity of dehydration. • If you suspect dehydration in your horse, you should call your veterinarian immediately.

Who is the Midwest Cowboy Krazy Dick? By Michelle Shelton, Arizona Horse Property Specialist

By the age of three I was wrapping nickels, dimes and pennies at the end of the business day. By the age of 11, I was running a cash register and by 13, I was teaching adult employees how to count change. At 14, I managed my own store and by 16, I was running Grand Openings and writing ads for the local newspapers. All of this happened in 37 convenance stores, similar to Circle K. Scattered across the Midwest, Krazy Dick’s Petroleum was our family owned business. I had two rules growing up. Rule #1: You will work. Rule #2: Tell the truth. Work never seemed like work to me. It was how we lived our life. When Larry the Cable Guy said, “Getter done”, this was not a new thing to me. I was a Seward kid and we knew how to work I grew up getting things done. Krazy Dick’s was a funny name that evolved. The mascot was a giant 25’ cowboy named after my dad, Richard. The name came about because of my Dad’s unique way of marketing and attracting business. I’ve never met anyone else like him. He was creative, innovative and would drive a hard bargain and everyone loved him. All of his customers were his cousins. Meaning, he treated them like family and called them cousin. Guess what? I have turned into my father. Real estate requires a unique way of marketing and attracting business, being innovative and driving business is what it is all about. Driving a hard bargain on your behalf is what I love to do. Most people don’t want to turn out to be like their parents but in my case I’m appreciative of the lessons both of my parents instilled in me. Who the Heck is Emma? Not only did Dad pass on his mad skills to me, apparently my daughter Emma has a very large dose of him in her too! Krazy Dick passed in 2007 when Emma was small, I like to think he would

love the idea of her sitting at Open Houses with me and showing homes until one day she could get her real estate license and work along side me. Now, Emma does just that. She is our Listing Coordinator and gives a concierge level service to all of our sellers. She is your point person and we pride ourselves on answering the phone when our sellers call and guess what? Emma

had two rules growing up. Rule #1: You will work. Rule #2: Tell the truth. The opportunity to earn your business is highly valued. More money, less stress. Because to us cousin, it’s not just business, it’s personal. Please check out what some of our clients have to say: https://askmichelleshelton.com/ michelle-shelton/reviews-2/

Enter Now for 2020- Farnam SuperMask SuperModel Title

By Cynthia McFarland

When Stephenie Bjorkman decided to enter her horse's photo in Farnam's 2019 SuperMask® SuperModel contest, she had no idea how much the competition had grown. "I follow Farnam online and saw the contest; I thought Maxwell would love this. I had a good picture of him and just thought I'd enter. I didn't realize how competitive it was," says Stephenie, an Arizona native and small business owner from the Scottsdale area.

“We were very pleased with the participation in the 2019 SuperMask® SuperModel Contest. We more than doubled the number of entries from last year. The word is spreading," notes Anna Brunetti, Digital Marketing Manager for Farnam. "Over 2,000 horse owners submitted photos from all over the country. The entries included many different breeds, colors, sizes, and ages, each image as unique as the next. It’s great seeing all these horses so loved by their owners.” Every entry was carefully studied by contest officials and after much deliberation, the top ten entries were identified, and those ten images were then submitted to a diverse panel of judges to determine the winner. "The SuperMask® SuperModel contest is a great way for Farnam fans to showcase the outstanding care they give their horses all year long. As we all know, it is continuous, quality care that keeps horses happy and healthy for the long haul, and it showed in the caliber of entries we received. Many of the contenders put in valuable time and lots of elbow grease to 'spit shine' their horses for this contest," notes Martha Lefebvre, Senior Marketing Manager for Farnam. After Stephenie received notification that her horse was chosen as the winner, she was amazed at the abundance of prizes he'd won, an impressive fly control and grooming package worth $1,000 in Farnam products. "I didn't realize I was going to get so much," she says. '"I've been in horses since I was six years old and have always used Farnam products. When I opened the prize box, I realized I used most of them already. But there were some products I'd never tried before, so that was cool." Of course, another big part of the win was that Maxwell would have a professional photo session so his image can be used in upcoming 90

advertisements for Farnam's ever-popular SuperMask® fly mask. "I told Maxwell, 'you're going to be a model,' and he is a horse who wants to have his photo taken. He has a look about him," says Stephenie. "I've always loved spending time pampering and grooming him, so this is proof it's worth it." "A well-cared for horse doesn't happen overnight. We appreciate that it takes hard work, total commitment and a lot of love," says Martha, adding that plans are in the works for the 2020 contest. Horse-centered Life Stephenie has shared her life with horses ever since she was a young girl. Growing up, she team roped and was very involved in rodeo. Although reining and reined cow horse competition always appealed to her, she just didn't have the right horse. At least, not until recently. Four years old at the time, Electric Java, was a rich sorrel Quarter Horse gelding with a striking blaze and a kind eye. He was talented, sound and personable. Although he'd only been shown once or twice at that time, the horse had a big stop and was impressive. It didn't take more than one ride for Stephenie to fall in love. Electric Java goes by the barn name of "Maxwell" and the duo has been making their mark in the show world. "When you take him in the show pen, he wants you to be happy with him," says Stephenie. Stephenie rides as a non-pro, so their accomplishments have taken time and she gives all the credit to her "consistently amazing" horse. Maxwell has a laid-back personality and nothing seems to faze this handsome gelding. His personality endears him to everyone who meets him. An accomplished competitor, he's definitely successful, but it's more than that. "He's gentle with dogs, kids, and my minis; I have four miniature horses and he thinks he's one of them," laughs Stephenie. "If he could have a job of being groomed and photographed, that would be his job. He loves the attention. He's a pet, but he's not annoying, or at least not to me!" "It took a long time to find one like him," she says happily. "I have owned enough horses to know he's a once-in-a-lifetime horse and a dream come true!” To enter this year’s SuperMask SuperModel contest, visit Farnam.com and submit your entry before the July 17, 2020 deadline. Only one entry allowed per person. Contest winner to be notified on or about August 21, 2020.
