2020 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Class Announced
The 2020 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees were announced on Monday, April 20 and will mark the 42nd annual induction. A total of eight will be inducted including one representative from the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.
Martha Josey
ProRodeo Hall of Fame Inductee Photo Harold Compton
1980 WPRA World Champion Martha Josey will represent the Association during this year’s induction class. Josey will join the following on the PRCA side – Cody Ohl, Butch Kirby, Jim Sutton, Sunni Deb Backstrom, Randy Witte, Grated Coconut and Ellensburg (WA) Rodeo. Through her love of the sport of rodeo, Martha Josey not only became a world champion barrel racer but got the opportunity to compete in the rodeo during the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, that pitted the United States versus Canada. Josey would win an individual bronze medal and helped Team USA capture the team title. Josey, who currently resides in Karnack, Texas, qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 11 times on four different horses across a span of
4
four decades. She won her world title in 1980 on Sonny Bit O’ Both, the same year the duo also won the AQHA World Championship, a feat that hasn’t been matched to date. “I am so excited and just don’t know what to say, I am in shock,” said the 82-year old upon learning of her induction. “I have received some great honors in the past but this is among the very highest. It is a true honor to be included in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in the WPRA category alongside so many great athletes and
personnel. “I thought four years ago when the WPRA inducted their first class it was just magnificent and to get the call today is just wonderful. I am so honored.” Not only did she make a name for herself in the arena but also has given back to the sport through her countless clinics. She and husband, R.E. Josey, started conducting barrel racing clinics in 1967 at their ranch in Texas. Many of today’s world champions credit Martha Josey with helping them achieve their goals.

Mr. Simms Interview
Valley Horseman Jerry Simms donates $1M to Coronavirus Relief Effort in AZ
by Tracy Wager • What compelled you to make this donation?
The fund, part of the Arizona Together initiative established by Governor Doug Ducey, provides financial support for organizations working to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, including funding of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline medical personnel, supporting non-profit organizations that help vulnerable Arizonans through food banks, homeless shelters and domestic violence facilities, among other services. “We all have to do our part in fighting this virus,” said Simms, who has owned the race track for 20 years. “I’m happy I’m able to do mine.” Governor Doug Ducey expressed his thanks in a statement to the Arizona Commerce Authority. “Businesses throughout the state have done tremendous work to help ensure Arizona comes out on the other side of COVID-19 stronger than ever,” said Governor Ducey. “This generous contribution from Jerry Simms will help our medical professionals and vulnerable populations amid this health emergency. Thank you to Jerry and all our community partners who are stepping up to help others.” Turf Paradise has called Arizona home for more than 50 years and has a long history of contributing to community efforts such as UCP of Central Arizona, and the Glendale Union High School District. Recently, Turf Paradise also donated $25,000 worth of food to the Saint Mary’s Food Bank. Turf Paradise first opened in 1956 as Arizona’s first sport’s franchise. Its racing season was cut short and has been closed since March 14 because of the Coronavirus. Live racing is expected to return in the fall pending direction from Governor Ducey and state health officials. 12
I was watching Lady GaGa on TV and her words compelled me and inspired my thoughts. There are a lot of very tough situations happening right now, and I imagined how hard it is for a single mother of 3 children trying to raise them right now. That is only one example, there are so many many more - people hurting and suffering right now with no way to make ends meet. • Have you had someone close to you get sick or die? (Is there a personal connection or back-story to this)
No. It is a cumulation of watching these heartbreaking stories on
television. Everyone has to do their part, I am just trying to do mine. This is uncharted territory, there is no script for this this and how to handle what is going on.
• How has this effected your Turf Paradise Team and the racehorse community?
This is my 21st year as owner of Turf Paradise. We yearly stabled on average 2,000 horses here each Season. COVID, everybody at the track has to be concerned because this is so contagious. We need to be safe for us and the customer we are thinking we will be able to open OTB soon.
• How has this effected Turf Paradise from the business perspective?
We closed on March 14th with over 7 weeks left of this season. We operate 60 OTB locations around the state. Within 2 days the Governor closed the state. We just have to see how this goes before opening the track back up. Our usual Season starts in the middle of October, with horses moving in mid-September.
• How would you describe your emotional state when writing a check for one-million dollars to support these folks? I felt very good about it - it’s going to a great cause!
• Looking forward will this have an effect opening Turf Paradise for the Fall Season? The top priority is that everybody needs to stay safe - them and their loved ones.

even more ominous by the fading light. Burned out trees glowed a hellish orange. Some areas were so black, they sprouted random white ejaculations of something
One thing is clear: after having lived in the same house for 33 plus years, one gets a little attached to the idea of it always being there.
Here’s a good aerial of the Ocotillo Fire footprint. Our house is in the upper left quadrant, just to the right of the confluence of the two washes. Notice the random skipping of the fire on our side of the creek. And notice how thorough the fire was on the other side. I hate to admit this, because I am no fan of blading the desert, but houses were saved because of it. An eye opener to say the least.
We escaped a maelstrom of fire with the loss of Kathy's car but did we lose our house as well? That was the question that haunted me all day Saturday.
After having her burns treated at Banner Hospital, Kathy and I discussed the odds of our house surviving the firestorm. Kathy is a family therapist, and she is used to dealing with delusional patients like me. She told me about working in disaster areas for the Red Cross and how people often cling to irrational hope about reclaiming their burned homes only to discover that even those homes that did survive a fire, can be smoke damaged and the stink and the damage of it can render everything inside as unusable. Somehow, that almost made it worse, but I had to face facts. I absolutely had to come to grips with the truth. There was only one problem: the sheriff's department would not let anyone back into the fire damaged area. I kept imagining our house with all of our belongings sitting there, untouched. Yes, I was completely delusional! At 6:30, on Saturday night, the ex-mayor of Cave Creek, Tom Augherton, told me he was going to make a run at the barricades, which were set up at two major intersections in the center of town to block anyone's re-entry in to the burned area. "I need my meds and they're in my house!" someone we know told them. "Sorry, you can't go in," was the standard reply. You can't blame them. If some poor sap actually went into their burned out house and accidentally triggered an explosion because of a improperly stored propane tank, or an exposed electrical line electrocuted them, guess who pays out the payment for damages? 26
which only made it seem more sinister. Tom pulled into his driveway and I got out and ran up the hill towards our property. All the underbrush was burned, but the bigger mesquite and palo verdes were still standing, although in the fading light I couldn't tell if they were alive or merely standing skeletons. Our back yard burned to the fenceline I went in the back gate and the back porch cloth screens were in tact and then I saw the breezeway furniture looking exactly as we left it and my heart soared. I opened the front door and smelled the breakfast still lingering in the kitchen. Everything was just as we left it. I got my wallet out of the bedroom and made a beeline to the studio. Every piece of art board and even a half finished glass of mimosa sat on my art desk. The house had been completely spared. But why? Meet Ishmael, a green card-carrying Lutheran Mexican. Weeks ago, Kathy paid him to weed wack our yard (the weeds and underbrush were so thick he and another landscaper only managed to clear about a third of the front yard in two separate sessions). I sincerely believe his proactive yard work saved our house. Oh, and it didn't hurt that we had the house built with block, not wood frame.

How Feeding Teff Grass Pellets Help Your Horse By Dr. Tania Cubitt Standlee Nutritional Expert Performance Horse Nutrition Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a warm season annual grass that originated in Africa where it is used primarily for grain production. Teff in the USA is grown primarily as a forage crop for livestock; it’s adaptable and can grow in various environments. Fine stemmed, fast growing, and high yielding, Teff Grass is a summer annual grass.
34
What really makes this grass unique and exciting for horse owners, is its nutrient content. Teff is a “C4 Warm Season” grass with a moderate protein and calories, but with a low sugar and starch content. Teff Grass Pellets offer a solution to many issues that plague our horses in these modern times. As a high fiber, low sugar and starch forage, horse owners with
JUNE 2020
horses suffering from many disease conditions can rest easy knowing that this product is now available. Quality Teff Grass can be difficult to find, but with Teff Grass Pellets now available from Standlee Premium Western Forage®, horse owners will no longer struggle to find a low sugar forage they can count on, that is of high-quality and consistently grown, for their horses with a number of ailing conditions. Teff Grass Forage Pellets for horses are a nutritional solution for horses challenged with sugar/ starch sensitivities such as those diagnosed with: Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Resistance (IR), Cushing’s Disease, Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) and Laminitis. To nutritionally manage horses with metabolic issues such as Insulin Resistance and Cushing’s Disease, we want to avoid feeds that are high in sugar and starch. Since much of the sugar and starch intake of a horse originates from forage (pasture and/ or hay), feeding a low sugar and starch hay is critical to their digestive systems and Teff Grass Pellets fit the bill. Teff Grass provides the horse with plenty of fiber, making the horse satisfied and full, but because of the low sugar and starch content, it does not fuel weight gain like many other forages may. Teff Grass Pellets are an ideal feed source, for overweight horses as well. Replacing baled grass hay with Teff Grass Forage Pellets eliminates the added chore of soaking hay in water to reduce the sugar content for horses with sugar sensitivities. It also eliminates the time, hassle and expense of nutritionally testing multiple batches of hay to find a source suitable for your sugar sensitive horse. Research has shown Teff forages to be palatable in comparison to other forages. With the addition of Teff Grass Pellets, Standlee Premium Western Forage provides full line of forage/ fiber solutions to meet the needs of all your horses. Visit standleeforage.com/ products for additional information including Standlee’s full product line, feeding instructions and guaranteed analyses by product and animal type and other helpful nutritional tools and papers.

How to Stop Sweet Itch from Driving You and Your Horse Crazy!
Summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (SSRD), commonly called sweet itch or summer itch, is caused by a horse’s allergic reaction to the saliva of a biting gnat known as the Culicoides midge. Many people refer to them as “no-see-ums.” These bothersome fellows are active from April through October. They live and breed in ponds, marshes, and areas where water is standing and stagnant. Gnats can travel up to half a mile to find a good meal. They tend to be most active during the hours around dawn and dusk. It takes about 48 to 72 hours after the first gnat bite for your horse to start showing symptoms. The severity of the reaction increases from year to year, as your horse becomes increasingly more sensitive to the insect’s saliva. Dorsal feeders are the most common gnat; they feed on the
36
skin around the ears, poll, mane, withers, rump, and tail head. Less common are the ventral feeders, who cause problems on the face, chest, and belly. Symptoms The symptoms of SSRD or sweet itch are hard to miss. Horses will constantly rub affected areas as a response to the intense itching. In the acute phase (early phase) the skin will become red and inflamed, and devoid of hair. Crusting and weeping sores may be present. In the chronic phase (later phase) the skin will thicken, blacken and become wrinkled. Sparse, course hair may be present. Once winter comes, the area completely heals up.
There are several measures you can take to limit your horse’s exposure to these annoying insects. Install fine mesh screen in your barn to keep the gnats out. (This is not always practical, however.) Circulate the air with ceiling and stall fans to discourage the gnats from
hanging around. Keep horses stalled an hour prior to and after dawn and dusk to reduce exposure to the bugs when they are most actively feeding. Keep stables at least a half mile away from marshes and swamps. Ensure pastures are well-drained to reduce stagnant water from collecting. Keep water tanks clean and filled with fresh water. Use insecticides and repellents to kill gnats and keep them off your horse. Use a fly sheet with tail flap and hood to cover vulnerable areas.
Treatment and prevention
The sooner you notice sweet itch and start on a program of treatment and prevention the better off your horse will be. A horse can do a lot of damage in a short period of time when they start rubbing manes and tails. When you first notice symptoms, take immediate action to reduce your horse’s exposure to these nasty gnats by following the recommendations above. Contact your vet and ask him or her about corticosteroid and antihistamine treatments.
JUNE 2020
Coating the itchy area daily with an oily substance, like baby oil or Skin So Soft, is often beneficial. Midges don’t like the oily film and will avoid it. Be sure to reapply the oil often, as it tends to wear off as the day goes on. Be careful with preparations that contain eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, tea tree oil, or mineral oil, as they may cause additional skin irritation. Try them somewhere else on your horse first. Watch the area for 24 hours, noting the appearance of any heat or swelling. Don’t use any preparation that causes irritation. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids has been proven to reduce skin inflammation and mitigate allergic response. Fish oils contain the highest level of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. When adding a fish oil supplement to your horse’s diet, do so slowly. Add a small amount at a time. In the beginning pour the oil on the feed and let it sit for 30 minutes before mixing it in so the smell is less powerful. Most horses will readily eat fish oil once they become accustomed to the new flavor.

Article Credit: The American Quarter Horse Journal A need for a good using horse has become a program that, year after year, produces the top-quality horses used to get work done at the A Bar Ranch, headquartered in Claremore, Oklahoma. This year, they are awarded the prestigious American Quarter Horse Association Best Remuda
award. The award is bittersweet, as the operation mourns the loss of co-founder Mike Armitage in March, but the family, including his wife, Martha, and sons, Merrit and Turner, continue its world-class operation.

presenting each year the AQHA Best Remuda Award to a ranch that raises outstanding ranch horses. “A great ranch horse is one that has cow-sense, physical ability and the mind to want to work with its rider,” said AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey. “For more than 35 years, A Bar Ranch has been producing these great ranch horses, and we are proud to recognize them as a Best Remuda winner.” The A Bar was founded in 1985 when Mike and Martha got married, and today it operates in six Oklahoma counties and two Texas counties; they maintain a cow herd of more than 4,000 head and 500 replacement heifers per year. The family’s operation is divided into commercial cow-calf, livestock marketing, agri-tourism and performance horses. The Armitages began breeding horses when they couldn’t find enough good using horses to buy and decided to raise their own. The ranchers use horses almost daily in every part of the ranch. Their breeding operation has grown to encompass approximately 100 broodmares. It features top cow horse bloodlines from Metallic Cat, Dual Rey, Peptos Stylish Oak, Boonlight Dancer, Tanquery Gin and Ima Son O Sugar. Among the quality horses the ranch has bred is two-time tie-down roping reserve world champion Cowboys Playgirl 526, a daughter of Greystone Playboy now owned by O.L. Daniel, of Okeechobee, Florida. The majority of the A Bar horses are sold via an annual production sale, which is linked to a five-figure futurity open only to A Bar-bred horses.

CASH INCENTIVES HELP AGENCY ADOPT MORE WILD HORSES AND BURROS
WASHINGTON— The Bureau of Land Management announced today that the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Incentive Program launched in March 2019 contributed to a significant increase of animals placed into private care. In the first 12 months of the AIP, the agency adopted out 6,026 animals, compared with

3,158 during the previous full fiscal year. That increase of 91% revives and accelerates an upward trend of adoptions that began in 2015. The AIP, which began midway through Fiscal Year 2019, helped the agency to achieve a
15-year record for total placements that year of 7,104 animals. Total placements include animals adopted, sold or transferred to another public agency. Each animal successfully placed into private care is estimated to save taxpayers approximately $24,000

in lifetime off-range holding costs. That amounts to over $170 million in lifetime savings generated during Fiscal Year 2019 alone, in large measure due to the AIP. “We’re excited that the public has responded so strongly to this innovative program. The successful use of incentives to increase adoption rates is a win for all involved – saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, reducing the overpopulation of wild horses and burros on the range, and helping these animals find homes with families who will care for and enjoy them for years to come,” said Acting Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management Casey Hammond. The AIP seeks to increase placements of wild horses or burros by paying individuals $1,000 for each untrained animal they adopt. Payments are made in two installments: $500 within 60 days of adoption, and $500 within 60 days of receiving title (approximately one year later). By contrast, it costs an average of $1,850 per year for the BLM to care for a wild horse or burro in an off-range corral facility.
“Placing animals into private care is a vital component of our mission to restore and maintain balance to America’s public lands where extensive wild horse and burro overpopulation threatens ecosystems, economies and even the health of the herds themselves,” said BLM’s Deputy Director for Policy and Programs William Pendley. “The response we’ve seen to this incentive reveals how much the American people value wild horses and burros and understand the importance of BLM’s mission to properly manage them.” Besides an increase in overall adoption numbers, the first year of the AIP also saw a sharp rise in the number of first-time and repeat adopters, as well as the number of individuals who adopted multiple animals. In all, there were 2,923 firsttime adopters, 932 repeat adopters and 1,280 multiple-animal adoptions – all of which represent substantial increases over previous years.

American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member R.D. Hubbard has died Influential horseman R.D. Hubbard, 84, died April 29, 2020, at his home in Palm Desert, California. Born in Smith Center, Kansas, on June 13, 1935, Randall Dee Hubbard was the youngest of eight children. He worked in his family’s icehouse and attended Butler
Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Upon graduation, he became a teacher.
Hubbard left teaching to become a glass salesman in 1959. Nine years later, he became president of Safelite Auto Glass. In 1978, he formed his own company, AFG Industries, which he helped grow into the second-largest glass manufacturer in North America.
The R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation supports charitable causes for which the two have special regard. To date, the foundation has given more than $47 million to educational scholarships to Hubbard’s alma mater, Butler County Community College; the Shoemaker Foundation; the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America; American Quarter Horse Foundation; projects in poor communities in southeastern New Mexico; medical research; and additional causes. During his first years in the glass business in Kansas, Hubbard and his boss, Art Lankin, became interested in Quarter Horses. While they started with show horses, it quickly became apparent that racing was more lucrative, which launched Hubbard’s career in the racing industry. In his own name, he has bred the earners of more than $4.7 million, and owned, bred and raced many more in partnerships. Among the many horses he was involved with are champions Brenda Beautiful, Denim N Diamonds, Feature Mr Bojangles, Ketel Won, My Dashing Lady, Noconi, Stoli and Super Sound Charge. He also raced Thoroughbreds, with such luminaries as Corwyn Bay (IRE), Gentlemen (ARG), Stravinsky and many more. Many great horses came from his Crystal Springs Farm, first located in Kentucky and now in New Mexico. Hubbard bought Ruidoso Downs in 1988 with partner Dr. Ed Allred, and eventually became the sole owner until he sold it in 2017. “Dee Hubbard meant as much to the Quarter Horse business as anyone we’ve ever seen," said Lowell Neumayer, manager of the Ruidoso Sale Co. "If it hadn’t been for Dee, I don’t believe there would be a Ruidoso Downs. After working hard to get gaming in New Mexico, several attempts had continued on page 50

A Letter from Las Vegas Events President
Pat Christenson
COVID-19 has dramatically altered the landscape of professional sports, including pro rodeo (PRCA). It is frustrating to sit on the sidelines waiting for the virus to take its course. However, I want to assure all rodeo fans that Las Vegas is diligently planning for its reopening. While we are not in control of when we can resume fully attended events, we are developing guidelines that ensure not only your safety while you are in Las Vegas but that our city does not become another hub of the virus. Six weeks ago, we created a committee made up of representatives from Las Vegas venues and events. The Vegas

Event COVID-19 Committee (VECC) has 45 active members and meets weekly to discuss creating guidelines that we can work with local and state officials to ensure events in Las Vegas are safe. The VECC’s plan, which is being crafted based on research and input from leading industry professionals, local and state government and medical experts, will focus on guidelines that safeguard staff, guests, officials and participants. There are two reasons I am optimistic about hosting the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the 36th time in Las Vegas. The first is our event is in December. MLB, the NFL, NHL and NBA will all be challenged with addressing guidelines for hosting sold-out events considering the challenges of properly protecting fans. We will have the benefit of their events opening before December. The second reason is you, the fan. We conducted a survey to identify the rodeo fans' affinity to return to attending rodeo events and specifically the National Finals Rodeo. I would like to share those results with you. Las Vegas Events is constantly asking our fans for feedback. Many of you have participated in our post-NFR rodeo surveys. Those surveys average between 5,000-6,000 respondents. When we asked you about this year’s NFR, close to 17,000 responded. What we heard loud and clear is that you are ready to come to Vegas. The rodeo industry and Las Vegas has been hit equally hard by COVID-19. We want to let you know that we are working diligently to create a plan that assures our fans and local and state officials that we are ready for the NFR and all the experiences that surround it. Until then, stay safe and isolated as possible to ensure this virus takes its course and allows us to get on with our lives. Sincerely, Pat Christenson President Las Vegas Events

USDA Delivers Relief to America’s Farmers and Ranchers Impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic (Washington, D.C., Friday, May 22, 2020) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue recently announced details of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), which will provide up to $16 billion in direct payments to deliver relief to America’s farmers and ranchers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Here’s what folks are saying about USDA’s efforts to assist farmers and families during the COVID-19 Pandemic:
Ivanka Trump: “In addition to the much-needed relief — the $16 billion that will go to farmers and ranchers to help support them through this difficult time — this Farmers to Family Food Box program is just an amazing initiative… It helps the small distributors. It helps the small farmers who were prioritized in the bids. And of course, it helps those in need. So we’re very excited about this program… And thank you, Secretary, for the hard work of your team in standing up this program so rapidly. We think that it will be extraordinarily successful for our small farmers and, of course, those in need.” American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall: “We want to thank Secretary Perdue for his hard work, and his staff has done an excellent job putting this program together. And we want to thank Congress for thinking about agriculture too and delivering it to your desk for you to sign. So, many thanks for helping the people that feed the American people, and we look forward to continuing to work with you, Mr. Trump. We appreciate.”

USDA to Provide $1 Billion in Loan Guarantees for Rural Businesses and Ag Producers WASHINGTON, D.C., May 22, 2020 – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced that the Department is making available up to $1 billion in loan guarantees to help rural businesses meet their working capital needs during the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, agricultural producers that are not eligible for USDA Farm Service Agency loans may receive funding under USDA Business & Industry (B&I) CARES Act Program provisions included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“Under the leadership of President Trump, USDA is committed to being a strong partner to rural businesses and agricultural producers and being a strong supporter of all aspects of the rural economy,” Secretary Perdue said. “Ensuring more rural agricultural producers are able to gain access to much-needed capital in these unprecedented times is a cornerstone of that commitment.” In addition to expanding eligibility to certain agricultural producers, the changes Secretary Perdue announced today allow USDA to: Provide 90 percent guarantees on B&I CARES Act Program loans; Set the application and guarantee fee at two percent of the loan; Accept appraisals completed within two years of the loan application date; Not require discounting of collateral for working capital loans, and Extend the maximum term for working capital loans to 10 years.
B&I CARES Act Program loans must be used as working capital to prevent, prepare for or respond to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The loans may be used only to support rural businesses, including agricultural producers, that were in operation on Feb. 15, 2020. USDA intends to consider applications in the order they are received. However, the Department may assign priority points to projects if the demand for funds exceeds availability. USDA announced the expanded B&I authorities in a notice published on page 31139 of the May 22 Federal Register (PDF, 268 KB). The Department will begin accepting applications for B&I loan guarantees on May 22, 2020. Applications must be received no later than midnight Eastern Daylight Time on September 15, 2021, or until funds are expended. Program funding expires Sept. 30, 2021. Eligible applicants may contact their local USDA Rural Development State Office in the state where the project is located. USDA is developing application guides for lenders and borrowers on the B&I CARES Act Program. The Agency also will host two webinars to provide an overview of program requirements. USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and highspeed internet access in rural areas. 2020 NRCHA DERBY RELOCATED
The NRCHA Derby, historically held in Paso Robles, California, will be held June 7 – 14, 2020, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, in Arizona. The decision to move forward, safely, with the Derby was not taken lightly. When it became apparent the state of California’s re-opening timeline would most likely affect the Derby, we began to seek alternative options. After much planning, reviewing and deliberating over multiple venues in multiple states, the Board of Directors decided to host the Derby in Scottsdale, Arizona. WestWorld had the same show dates available and the facility size accommodates social distancing guidelines. We are working on a plan that conforms to official guidelines for the benefit of all attendees. The event will be closed to the public. The entry deadline has been extended to May 20th. Additional information regarding hotels, entry forms, etc. will be available in the upcoming days. We would like to send a big thank you to all the various venue staff who worked so hard to make the Derby happen. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding in these trying times. We felt it was in the best interest of our owners, riders, members and sponsors to hold this premier event. Please remember, it is everyone’s own decision to enter the show. We look forward to safely seeing our friends and family next month 54

Bennett had an 84.5-point ride on The Cervi Brothers’ Little Bucker, Friday, and it held for the victory when the rodeo concluded Sunday night. Cave Creek Rodeo Days was the first PRCA-sanctioned rodeo since the COVID-19 pandemic halted rodeos in the middle of March. “For this being the first rodeo back it is awesome to win,” Bennett said. “I like to win everything I go to, big, little or in between. I love to win. (Little Bucker) had one of his better days. He stayed hooked and stayed under himself and felt good. Winning Cave Creek is the start to a roll I want to continue.” “I thought I would be nervous (Friday), and I have never felt more at home than what I did tonight,” said Bennett, who's qualified for the last eight Wrangler National Finals Rodeos. “I was back there, and I was relaxed and ready. I had it in my mind that I was here to win and do my job. It’s awesome to be back in the arena and do what I love. I would hope committees across the world, fans across the world, people and sponsors see this and enjoy it and love it, keep the ball rolling. Come July, it would be awesome if we could have a good Cowboy Christmas and finish out the year strong.” Bennett, who finished seventh in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in 2019, had been battling a right (riding hand) wrist injury before the coronavirus halted rodeos.

After 17 years of marriage, she heard her husband say he was ready for a horse of his own. Casey Olson, an equestrian since age 5 who has ridden in everything from dressage to barrel racing, was thrilled. Trying her best to contain her excitement, she asked Chris what his dream horse would be. Finding a “tall, broad, safe horse with ‘cool coloring like a Paint’” would be a tall order to fill. But within just two weeks, Casey found a horse that more than checked all the boxes – an 18-year-old Paint horse named Dodger. “He instantly fell in love with him. He’s a perfect fit,” Casey said.
“When he came to us, he was extremely overweight with a crested neck. His mane moved like a separate entity. It was like he was bubblewrapped. We put him on a slow weight-loss diet, but during the winter, we noticed he wasn't holding his weight well. His coat has gotten long and curly, his mane was wavy and he was losing all of his top line. When spring came, the other horses were shedding, but Dodger didn’t shed at all.” Perplexed, Casey put in a call to her veterinarian, who also cared for Dodger when he was with his previous owner. During his examination, she knew right away there was something different about him. His coat condition and weight had never been an issue before, and he was receiving excellent care. The likelihood he had developed Cushing’s Disease was high, but thankfully they had caught it early. “We finally had our answer,” Casey’s husband, Chris, said. “It was not great news, but we knew what we needed to do now.”
Cushing’s disease in horses
Cushing’s disease, also known as PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction), is the most common hormonal disorder affecting horses and ponies. Equine Cushings impacts up to 30 percent of horses and ponies more than 15 years old. While the disease occurs most frequently in senior horses, horses as young as 5 have been diagnosed with the disease. The disease1 causes the horse's pituitary gland at the base of the brain, which controls body functions through hormone levels, to work double-time, which results in a variety of lifelong problems for affected horses. Often, signs of Cushings in horses go unnoticed.
Symptoms of Cushings in horses Decreased athletic performance Loss of muscle mass Change in attitude or energy Delayed shedding or no shedding at all Excess fat on tail head or neck Infertility Abnormal sweating Laminitis Blindness
Experts recommend that horse owners perform frequent health checks to identify early signs. An early diagnosis can have a profound impact continued pn page 66 64

Prolotherapy is effective in treat-
ing chronic joint pain by stabilizing the joint capsule, rebuilding collagen and strengthening ligaments, and relieving pain. Injured tissues are infused with a nutrient solution of 12-20% glucose, vitamin B12, and lidocaine. Glucosamine may be added to increase stimulation. Generally, 3-6 treatments provide resolution.
PAIN RELIEF and
JOINT REPAIR
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
treatment concentrates platelets from your blood which are then injected into ligaments and joints. PRP heals moderate to severe joint degeneration, cartilage tears, and arthritis damage. PRP provides stronger healing stimulation than prolotherapy. When pain is combined with joint inflammation, we often start with 1-2 prolotherapy treatments, followed by 2-3 PRP treatments.
Stem cell therapy can heal
severely injured joint tissues, including osteoarthritis. Stem cells and associated growth factors stimulate healing and regenerate new tissue in ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, replacing what’s been damaged.

for other illnesses associated with the disease. In conjunction with treatment, implement best management practices to help keep a PPID horse healthy and comfortable. Provide a balanced diet. Casey, who developed an impressive chart comparing feeds to ensure the best diet for their horse Dodger, advises others managing the condition to “Watch the starch and sugar contents of everything that goes in your horse’s mouth.” Low-sugar, lowstarch diets are often the best approach for horses with PPID. Deworm as needed. Horses with PPID have shown to have higher fecal egg counts, suggesting greater risk for a higher parasite burden. Vaccinate against disease threats. Ensure horses are vaccinated against core equine diseases and any risk-based diseases that could threaten his well-being. Horses with advanced PPID may need to be vaccinated twice yearly against West Nile virus to help ensure a sufficient immune response. Look to this comparison chart to help choose the best West Nile vaccine for your horse. Clip coats and blanket when necessary. Horses with PPID often have varying consistency of coat shedding, some shedding too frequently while others barely shed at all. Keep them comfortable by clipping their coat in the summertime and blanketing them in the wintertime. Maintain a regular dental and hoof care schedule. Implement a yearly or asneeded dental care schedule, and ensure hooves are trimmed on average every six to eight weeks. Casey shared how difficult it was for her to see her husband Chris going through all of this with his first horse. “It was a crash-andburn lesson into horses. We want to do what’s best for Dodger, and we will.” “I would do it all again,” said Chris. “Dodger has such a personality, and he is a great trail horse that I can trust.”

PRCA Reining Stock Contractor Chad Berger Recovering from Open Heart Surgery BY: JUSTIN FELISKO Reigning Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger is doing well following open-heart surgery Friday morning at Abbot Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Berger’s wife, Sarah, said on Saturday morning that the entire Berger family is so thankful for all of the support they have received in the past 24 hours, and the weeks leading up to the surgery.
“Chad is doing great,” Sarah said. “We are so grateful. There are so many people out there praying for him. It has been unbelievable. So many people have been reaching out to him, and we just want everyone to know he is going to be OK. “Thank you for the prayers, and keep them coming.” Berger was diagnosed in late January with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscles that makes it hard for the organ to pump blood. Doctors needed about six hours to perform a septal myectomy Friday to help reduce the muscle thickening that occurs in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. “The cardiologist said he is doing great,” Sarah said. “We are looking forward to Chad coming home soon in hopefully five days or so.” Once he returns home to Mandan, North Dakota, Berger is expected to need around 13 weeks to fully recover from the surgery. “You have to go at it just like you go after trying to win Stock Contractor of the Year,” Chad told PBR.com a few weeks ago. “You have to go in at full blast. That’s the way I’m looking at it.” The 58-year-old was originally scheduled to have the procedure in April before it was put on hold because of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. Berger had not been feeling well this past winter, and his condition continued to worsen. Berger would quickly lose his breath, and he was more tired than usual. He had a nagging cough, which he figured was just a nasty winter cold at the time. It was following the Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic, though, when Berger realized something may be seriously wrong. He was traveling back from the Unleash The Beast event in Sacramento, California, when he could barely muster up enough strength to change planes at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. “I couldn’t hardly make it to my next plane,” Chad said. “When I got to Minneapolis, I had a hell of a time getting to my next flight. I rode the escalators. Every time I would walk a little ways, get on one of them things and let it take me to the next one.” Berger had worked endlessly in the summer/fall of 2018 to lose more than 50 pounds and get in better physical shape. He is usually climbing over the bucking chutes to flank his bulls at PBR events, so being physically active was not really a challenge for him. The sudden struggles led Berger, who has had some cardiovascular issues in the past, to undergo testing at the end of January. He had stents put in his heart 14 years ago, as well as five years ago, so he always takes his cardiac health seriously.

The Queen, 94, Spending Quarantine Riding Horses Every Day Wondering how Queen Elizabeth is doing in quarantine? Her Majesty is reportedly “making the most” of her time in lockdown, and sources say that she’s in “excellent spirits” and riding horses daily. “One of the nicest things for the Queen is that she is getting to spend more time with her husband than she usually would,” a source says. “They have dinner together in the evenings and I imagine the Queen is of the generation where she dresses for dinner. She is riding out every day and is making the most of this time.”

As for the reports that the Queen might never return to public duties due to the coronavirus, sources say she’s actually planning to get back “as soon as she possibly can.” “She can’t be seen to be going against official government advice, but it’s fair to say she’s looking forward to getting back to normal,” a source says. “It’s a delicate line but I think we will see her doing private audiences again and more of the work we are used to seeing her do in public at some point in the future. She is still receiving her red government boxes and having her weekly audience with the PM.

In 1975, Executive Secretary Ed Roberts handpicked Wanda as his administrative assistant, a position Wanda called her “dream job.” A self-described problemsolver, Wanda most enjoyed helping APHA members and cultivated deep relationships with many of them. In 1999, Wanda was named honorary APHA past president. Retiring from APHA in 2000, Wanda lived in Hurst, Texas, and was a member of the APHA Hall of Fame Selection Committee. New product - Curicyn BodyGuard - Fly, Flea, Tick & Insect Repellen Curicyn’s BodyGuard Fly, Flea, Tick & Insect Repellent is easy to use, as well as, 100% nontoxic to humans and all animals. Specifically, it works in its vapor form, as evaporated molecules that the flies, fleas, ticks or insects encounter near or on the animal. It is important to realize, that it does not require contact with the insect or fly to be effective. The repellent molecules physically contact olfactory receptors (e.g. on the antennae, palps or feet of the insect), and cause a behavioral change, such as retreating from an area with a high concentration of the repellent vapor. And because it
works via the olfactory receptors in the pests, less product is needed on the animal. In fact, Curicyn BodyGuard has been tested by university entomologists and found to be 3X more effective than other leading fly sprays!

Without big events, Del Mar Fairgrounds says it needs $20M to survive The Del Mar Fairgrounds says it faces closing for good unless it receives emergency state funding.
The fairgrounds, which is owned by the state, says its operations are selffunded and relies on event revenues to operate. Without events like the San Diego County Fair, horse racing, several smaller festivals, and more, the fairgrounds' revenue has been severely depleted. The venue had already lost the KAABOO music festival heading into this year as well, which was set to move to Petco Park this year. The fairgrounds says it needs $20 million in relief aid from California in order to survive. "From creating cherished family memories and generating $680 million in economic impact, to serving as an essential evacuation site during wildfires and providing nearly 4,000 full-timeequivalent jobs, losing the Fairgrounds would leave a giant void in San Diego as we know it," a release from the venue said. Fairgrounds officials are calling on the community to urge their local leaders to support emergency aid from the state.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced today its intention to begin the 2020 summer race meet on July 10 and employ a three-day-a-week race schedule pending the approval of the California Horse Racing Board at its June 11 meeting.
Del Mar Opening Day July 10th
Further, following guidelines issued by San Diego County public health officials, California state officials and in consultation with other public health experts, the track’s traditional summer meeting is preparing to operate without spectators, but will continue to work with state and local officials to adopt any changes as they happen. In all cases, Del Mar will follow similar COVID-19 protocols that have enabled racing to be conducted safely in California and throughout the
country. “We’re coming back and we’re going to put on the most unique show in Del Mar history,” said Del Mar’s CEO, Joe Harper. “It’s going to look different, it’s going to feel different, but it’s going to be first-class horse racing at Del Mar and in these unusual times that’s something to look forward to.” The new schedule calls for 291 races over nine weeks. The track

carded 297 races over its eight-week 2019 summer meeting. Racing at Santa Anita is scheduled to conclude June 21. Los Alamitos will offer Thoroughbred racing from June 26 through July 5. Both tracks have been operating live racing without fans and with only essential personnel under strict protocols in response to COVID-19. “Over the past several weeks Del Mar has joined with other racing industry leaders to develop extensive operating procedures to permit horse racing in a way that ensures the safety of all employees, stakeholders and our horses,” said Josh Rubinstein, DMTC’s president and COO. “A number of medical experts throughout the country have provided guidance and helped us develop a comprehensive plan.
DMTC’s planning has benefitted from additional direction and aid from local experts such as Scripps Health’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, and her colleagues.”

Wife, mother, daughter, sister, coach, trainer, friend, fighter: these all describe Becky Hanson who passed away on May 25, 2020, after a seven-year battle with glioblastoma multiforme. Along with the entire reining community, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) mourns the loss of this NRHA Professional who leaves behind a legacy of philanthropy and tenacity, plus a vibrant zeal for life, horses, and family.

Committees. During that time, Becky became close with several members, but one, in particular, was Joao Marcos, NRHA Board member. This led Joao to invite Becky and David to serve as instructors at his facility, along with NRHA Professional Ruben Van Dorp, for the first Reining Horse Foundation Rookie Day in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2016. After 20 years’ training reiners with her husband, Becky’s life was turned upside down with a diagnosis in March 2013. She never let cancer become the story of her life; it simply became a platform. Becky dubbed her dance with glioblastoma multiforme as “My Little Tumor Adventure.” In December 2019, the NRHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year Award was renamed to honor Becky. In naming this award, the Professional’s Committee hopes her legacy will serve as a continuous reminder about what it means to be named Horsewoman of the Year. Becky was honored, proud, and truly humbled by it. Her emotions bubbled to the surface every time it came up.
Born on September 1, 1971, in Mountain View, California, Becky essentially grew up in Eagle, Idaho. And that’s where she graduated high school. Life after that was a roller coaster, in the best way. Long before the chemotherapy and radiation, Becky graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 1993 with an English literature degree and a minor in secondary education.
