ARIZONA DOWNS CELEBRATES INAUGURAL SUMMER MEET

Year-round horse racing returned to Arizona on Memorial Day weekend when the newly renovated Arizona Downs racetrack kicked off its inaugural summer racing season. The action begans on Friday, May 24 when the spacious threefloor venue opened its gates to Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing, and an entertainment-

packed season that continues every weekend through Labor Day. The Memorial Day weekend grand opening was a four-day celebration that offered something for everyone – a Family Fun Zone, food trucks, and eight horse races each day. The first ten children (10 and under) in line at the admission gate to the Family Fun Zone each

day of Grand Opening Weekend were able to register for a stick horse race and keep the stick horse. Yay! Admission gates open at 10 a.m. and post time for the first race daily is 1 p.m. General admission is $2. Kids 10 and under are free. Findlay Toyota Family Fun Zone On Your Bark, Get Set, GO!

racing strengthens the industry and benefits everyone – the horse owners, breeders, jockeys, and related professions that will now be able to stay in the state to compete. And of course there are thousands of fans who will be able to enjoy horse racing in Arizona throughout the year.”

The FIDO 500 Mini Dog Races are a regular feature attraction of the Findlay Toyota Family Fun Zone each weekend of Arizona Downs’ throughout the summer racing season, from Memorial Day weekend through July 21. More than a dozen miniature purebred dogs participate in races that take place between the horse races throughout the day. The allstar lineup includes Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, a Chinese Pug, a Shiba Inu, a Schnauzer, a Pomeranian, Scottish terrier, an allAmerican mutt, and more. Nearly all of the FIDO 500 competitors are rescue dogs, each with a touching story that is shared during introductions by Master of Ceremonies Rocket Hoskins. In addition to the Family Fun Zone, the racetrack will keep families entertained all summer long with themed celebrations for Fathers Day, Kids Day, July 4, Labor Day, and Back-to-School Day, among others. “Families are searching for new experiences they can share together without draining their wallets,” said McGovern. “We’ve planned our entire summer season with families in mind, and we’re keeping it very affordable. We want parents and children alike who haven’t experienced horse racing to fall in love with the sport.” Arizona-based J&J Equine Enterprises LLC purchased the racetrack, formerly known as Yavapai Downs, for $3.22 million in January 2018. Since then, the owners have invested more than $7 million to get Arizona Downs ready for the 2019 summer racing season. “There is a lot of excitement about Arizona Downs here in the state, and among horse racing fans across the country,” said McGovern. “Year-round horse

"To Steel, or Not to Steel?"

By Lenny Alifi Allow me to humbly say "Hi" and formally introduce myself. All who know me call my 'Lenny' Lenny Alifi. I've been a Farrier for over 45 years, spending most of my adult life in the desert right here in the Phoenix Valley, Apache Junction to be exact.

I started my apprenticeship in Upstate New York and in Long Island. The man I served my apprenticeship under is Dave Birdsall who was eventually inducted into the Worldwide Farriers Association. Dave was old school, hard on me, and told me to go to school so I went to Western's School of Horseshoeing in the mid 1970s. I later returned to Long Island to work with Dave but The West gets under a person's skin and I had to make this desert my home. From early childhood I'd always had a love for horses in spite of being a New York City raised kid and somehow, I just knew I'd be in equine care in some way as a professional. In the 1980s, I was very fortunate to teach at SCC and CAC in equine sciences. Over the many years of nailing steel to hoof, I've always pondered "Is there were a better way?" With all of todays advancing technology, maybe there is a better solution to this necessary evil of nailing steel to hoof. We put weight on a horses back and the sports and pleasure riding vigorously wares away hoof faster than natures growth can catch up. We have been nailing steel on to protect our horses feet since the 1400s. My observation of the Golden Wing Horseshoe is that it is not made of steel, has the strength of natural hoof, and has an amazing durability that is as close to barefoot shoeing as I have yet experienced. At first introduction to this strange looking shoe, I was a bit confused as to either embrace it or just pass it along as some oddity of interest. Either way, I was intrigued so I had to give it a whirl. I did and so far, it's been18 horses that I have shod and reset with this Golden Wing shoe. I must confess, it is becoming much less strange than it was 5 weeks ago. It gives the protection of padding a hoof and I love the shock absorption, it is just like putting hoof onto hoof. I still need more hands on observation with this innovative new product but the in very near future I hope to be able to answer the question; to steel or not to steel?

EHV-1

UPDATE NRCHA Veterinarian and Animal Welfare Committee Chairman Dr. Joe Carter would like to reassure everyone that this respiratory, nonneurological form is very similar to the flu. “EHV-1 is more common than most people realize. Keeping your horse up-to-date on vaccines is the best line of defense against EHV-1, along with many other viruses horses battle regularly. If a Stakes competitor is concerned about their horse’s health, it is best to consult their local vet and monitor the horse closely,” said Carter. Dr. Carter is communicating regularly with Nevada State State Veterinarian JJ Goicoechea and the South Point Equestrian Center staff for the latest updates. NRCHA President Corey Cushing noted, “Social media can often increase people’s anxiety about EHV-1 and it can contribute to exaggerations of the facts. I would like to remind owners and riders that this virus is nothing new. Common sense, research and simple preventions are very effective against the disease.” Bio-security procedures are always a healthy habit for horse owners and riders to maintain, whether you are at home or at an event. All the major show facilities disinfect horse-shared areas, but it doesn’t hurt to disinfect your stalls upon arrival. Whether it’s Clorox, Pine-sol or some other disinfectant you buy from your feed store or vet, it is always worth the extra step. You can also use these same disinfectants to clean and sanitize shared tack, equipment and buckets. Making sure your horse is up-to-date on booster shots and minimizing the amount of shared equipment are key preventions. If you are planning to travel with equine in tow, it is best to keep daily records of horse’s temperature and keep a close eye on their feed and water intake. All these basic practices can go a long way towards ensuring your horse’s health and well-being.

In 2002, Michael, Michelle, and their children left New York and permanently relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2004 Michael and Michelle decided to try their hand at breeding. Having had some bad experiences with stallion owners they wanted to breed their mares to, they decided to build a facility that would eventually house the finest breeding stallions - a place where every breeder could come, large or small, and be treated with kindness and respect. In December, 2005 Silver Spurs Equine became a reality. Silver Spurs Equine's breeding program started around one stallion, the world famous Boomernic. Today, Silver Spurs has the finest stallions in the sports of Reining, Working Cow, Barrel Racing, Quarter Horse Racing, and Halter Horse. While they are now the largest privately owned breeding facility in the USA, one thing

f

that has not changed is their desire to help and be a friend to the small breeder. Says Michael, "While it is our privilige to own, care for, and manage the breeding careers of these magnificent stallions, they truly belong to you - the breeder." To further illustrate the Miola’s dedication and commitment to the goal of providing the finest breeding stallions and champion prospects, Silver Spurs purchased Xtra Quarter Horses in Purcell, Oklahoma back in April 2017.

Billy The Kid on the Deadliest Street in America IN THE 1870S, LINCOLN, NEW MEXICO TERRITORY, WAS THE MURDER CAPITAL OF AMERICA.

Anatomy of the Killing Fields It is a half mile from one end of Lincoln to the other and, on just this street, 49 men and one woman were killed in the approximately 10-year period of the Lincoln County War and its aftermath. At about the halfway point, and in the heart of the killing fields, lie several locations, at right, where most of the shooting deaths occurred. On the night of July 19, 1878, in what is known as the “Big Killing” and the “McSween Fight,” at least five men were killed when the MurphyDolan forces surrounded the McSween faction and burned them out.

30

Attempting to escape out the back door of the burning house, five men were killed: Alexander McSween, Francisco Zamora, Vincente Romero, Harvey Morris and Robert Beckwith. Another, Yginio Salazar, survived with severe wounds and crawled off. He lives. Virtually next door from the McSween house is the Tunstall Store, where an earlier ambush by the Regulators results in the death of Sheriff Brady and his deputy George Hindman. Across the street, hoeing onions in his back yard, Squire Wilson is hit by a stray bullet and falls forward as it passes through his buttocks.

JUNE 2019

Billy the Kid and six of the Regulators are in the corral behind the Tunstall Store when they spot Sheriff Brady. Firing from behind a ten-foot wall, they ambush Brady and four deputies when they pass on foot, walking east past the store.

Billy the Kid successfully made it out of the McSween house, along with several others. Five were not so lucky and ended up dead in the back yard.

One of the deputies, Billy Mathews, is not hit, and he runs to the Cisneros yard where he takes cover behind a picket fence. He sees two men run into the street and fires, hitting Big Jim French in the thigh.

“At least 200 men have been killed in Lincoln County during the last three years but I did not kill all of them.” —Billy The Kid,as quoted in the Daily New Mexican, March 28, 1881

Deputy George Hindman is hit and falls. Brady, who is hit by a dozen balls, says, “Oh, Lord” and tries to get up, but another round of shots hit him, and he falls back, mortally wounded.

Squire Wilson was hoeing onions in his back yard when a stray bullet from the Regulators firing from Tunstall’s corral tore through his buttocks.

French and the Kid (who some think was trying to retrieve his Winchester which Brady had taken from him previously) hotfooted it back to the wall.

Sylvester Stallone returns for part five of his iconic action franchise, opening Sept. 20.

SEE THE TRAILER HERE

The teaser trailer for Rambo V: Last Blood showing that Sylvester Stallone is once again a one-man army.

QR CODE SCAN TO VIEW

In the preview, which is just under two minutes, John

Rambo is at his ranch, riding a reining horse. Something happens and he says he must face his past for one last allout fight. The trailer is backed with the usual action and, of course, an intense Rambo wielding a bow. Stallone first played the Vietnam War veteran and former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier in 1982's First Blood. That movie was based on David Morrell's 1972 novel of the same name. Stallone last played the character in 2008's Rambo. The Lionsgate film is due in theaters Sept. 20. Watch the trailer above.

Willie Nelson releases new music video dedicated to his rescue horses A world away from the stage, and with the steering wheel of his old pickup truck instead of a guitar in hand, Willie Nelson loves few things more than to go on a drive around his 700-acre chunk of the Texas Hill Country near here. He calls his ranch "Luck" and smiles as he explains, "When you’re here, you're in Luck, and when you're not, you're out of Luck." Over 70 horses roam Nelson's ranch, most of which he rescued before they could be sent to slaughterhouses. "My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world," Nelson said. "They get hand-fed twice a day, and they were just ready to go to slaughter is probably the last thing they remembered, so they’re happy horses." Nelson has included his love for horses in a CD that will be released in early summer. It's a song entitled "Ride Me Back Home." As he approaches his 87th birthday, Nelson is still touring and spending

40

JUNE 2019

about 200 days on the road. "It’s a lot of traveling and being away from home," Nelson said. "But that’s what we do." With the exception of a benefit performance in 2018 for then-senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke, Nelson’s shows are void of politics. "We leave all of that at home," Nelson explained. "I think that’s why a lot of people show up, because they don’t have to worry about what they’ve been watching on TV all day." Though in good health and living a relatively stress-free life, Nelson noted that it hasn't always been that way, as reflected in troubles he had with the IRS. Nelson said, "I remember that I remember those guys." He's since settled his debt and moved on. "You're supposed to get a little smarter as we get older," Nelson said with a smile. "Every now and then, I think I’m getting a little smarter, but I’m not sure."

Cats Picasso Title Sponsor of the NRCHA 2019 Derby

The National Reined Cow Horse Association is pleased to welcome Cats Picasso as the title sponsor of the 2019 NRCHA Derby, held June 9 – 16 in Paso Robles, California. Cats Picasso is owned by Coast Performance Horses, located in White Rock, British Columbia. The 2012 dually-registered Quarter Horse and Paint Horse stallion, affectionately known around the barn as “Tonto”, has amassed more than $150,000 in lifetime earnings. Cats Picasso (Metallic Cat x Playboys Vixen x Hickoryote) had an impressive start to his show career when he tied for third place in the 2015 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity ® Open with John Swales aboard. Some of his other noted performances include a fifth-place finish at the 2016 NRCHA Stakes Open and a fourthplace finish at the 2017 NRCHA Derby Open, both with Swales in the saddle.

Deb Anderson, one of the partners of Coast Performance Horses, recently transitioned from avid non pro competitor to stallion owner and dedicated sponsor of the reined cow horse industry. Her equine background evolved from showing Morgan horses as a youth to showing cutting horses as an adult. In 2010, she tested the reined cow horse waters aboard her mare, Signed Prescription (High Sign Nugget x Ima Docs Dolly x Ima Doc O Lena), and soon become a regular NRCHA non pro competitor by 2014. Over the years, Anderson kept her eye on Cats Picasso at local horse 44

shows and premier events. When the opportunity to purchase the elite equine athlete presented itself, she jumped at the prospect. Like many, Anderson finds being an owner is far more unnerving than being a competitor, but values the reward. “It’s awesome! It’s what you dream of. It’s so cool to get to watch your horse out there competing in a major event,” Anderson said of cheering on their new stallion in the show pen. Coast Performance Horses is a group effort that has made many people’s dreams come true. Cats Picasso’s team also includes Anderson’s fiancé, Dale Jarvis, and their good friends, Nav and Jen Dhaliwal. “We are so excited to be doing this,” said Anderson. “This is a dream come true. It is really cool to be a part of this whole thing with our good friends.” “We are excited to announce Cats Picasso as the title sponsor of the NRCHA Derby, and we could not be more pleased to have Coast Performance Horses be a part of our sponsorship family,” said NRCHA Executive Director Jay Winborn. “I appreciate and admire their willingness to jump in at all levels – as an owner, a breeder and a sponsor. I look forward to getting to know them over years, and watching their program blossom with the purchase of this great cow horse stallion.” Before retiring to the breeding barn, Cats Picasso’s team has one major goal to achieve. “What our plans are and what we hope for him is to make it to the World’s Greatest [Horseman]. That’s what we really want to do,” said Anderson. Not only is Cats Picasso in training at John Swales Performance Horses, but that is where he also stands to the public. Following breeding season, the stallion will return to the show pen with his long-time partner and top NRCHA professional, John Swales, aboard and compete in the Open Two Rein Spectacular at the 2019 NRCHA Derby.

Road to the Horse Goes Back to the Ranch in 2020

Road to the Horse 2020’s Back to the Ranch theme is a celebration of the timeless values of the Western lifestyle that include authenticity, courage, humbleness, chivalry, and a relentless can-do Western spirit. Our final Road to the Horse 2020 competitor, Ken McNabb, amplifies those characteristics with his strong ranching roots and lifelong dedication to the horse. Ken McNabb will complete the main competitor line up for Road to the Horse 2020 joining Craig Cameron and Wade Black, as they compete for the title on March 19-22, in Lexington, Kentucky.

Although Ken McNabb is a veteran Road to the Horse competitor, it will be his first time to compete in 10 years and his first time to compete in the Bluegrass State under the bright lights of the Alltech Arena. “I am honored and excited to be invited back to Road to the Horse 2020. I am looking forward to the camaraderie and good natured competitiveness that it offers. With Western Horseman at the helm and the theme of Back to the Ranch, I believe this competition fits me like a glove. I am thrilled to be chosen as one of the three representatives for the ranching industry and I am eager to take our colt starting program that we use here on the ranch and present it to the judges at Road to the Horse. Until then, May God Bless the Trails You Ride.” Road to the Horse 2020 will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park on March 19-22, 2020. SUCCESSFUL TESTING FOR PRCA ONLINE ENTRIES BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A soft launch of the PRCA online entry platform was successful, Thursday, May 23, marking another step forward in the process to bring online entries to PRORODEO competitors. Using the openings of the Jordan (Mont.) Match Xtreme Bronc Ride as a test, Thursday’s goal was to exercise the application internally at PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs. Entries came into PROCOM as normal, however, PROCOM operators used the new online entries application to take the entry information and enter it into the system. While the online entries process continues to be tested, a full launch is anticipated in the coming weeks. Once the PRCA online entry system goes live, competitors with Internet connections will be able to enter rodeos through a website using smartphones, tablets or computers. Among the features on the website will be map links to the sites of the rodeos, ground rules listed and alert settings. Competitors will be able to filter rodeos by circuit, tour, state and dates, among other options. They will also have the option of choosing the preference for the perf they want.

WHY RISK IT

CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES HOW IT WORKS

A Service to Improve Your Footing

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

Bobby Diamond, Boy With a Horse on the 1950s TV Series 'Fury,' Dies at 75 Bobby Diamond, who portrayed a young orphan opposite Peter Graves and a wild stallion on the 1950s NBC series Fury, has died. He was 75. Diamond died May 15 of cancer at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., author and longtime friend Laurie Jacobson told The

Hollywood Reporter. Diamond also starred with Jack Klugman on "In Praise of Pip," a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, and played Duncan "Dunky" Gillis, a cousin of Dwayne Hickman's title character, on the final season of another CBS series, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Legend has it he was in the running to portray Robin the Boy Wonder on ABC's Batman before producers decided that at 21 he was too old and

went with Burt Ward instead. On Fury — "the story of a horse and the boy who loves him," as it said in the opening — Diamond starred as Joey Clark, a troubled youngster. He's adopted by Graves' Jim Newton, the owner of the Broken Wheel Ranch in California, and forms a strong bond with a wild horse named Fury. (Newton's wife and son recently had been killed by a drunk driver.) The show ran for five seasons, from October 1955 through March 1960, and then for years afterward in syndication. When Fury ended, Diamond said he turned down an opportunity to play one of the boys, Robbie Douglas (Don Grady), on a new show, ABC's My Three Sons, in favor of working on another sitcom, NBC's The Nanette Fabray Show. My Three Sons ran for 12 seasons, The Nanette Fabray Show one. "Great decision, eh? I could have been a multi-multimillionaire just from that alone," he said in a 1990 interview with the Los Angeles Times. A son of a real estate broker and a housewife, Robert Diamond was born Aug. 23, 1943. His mother, Pearl, guided him into show business, and he made his way into such films as The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), 3 Ring Circus (1954) and To Hell and Back (1955). Later, he received top billing in Airborne (1962), a movie about paratroopers, and appeared in Billie (1965), a comedy that starred Patty Duke as an athletic tomboy.

Racing surface at Santa Anita likely contributed to 23 equine deaths Catastrophic injuries peaked in late February and March 2019; veterinarians point to multiple factors, call for further investigation.

By Ed Kane, PhD DVM360 MAGAZINE On Feb. 23, Battle of Midway, a prominent 4-year-old thoroughbred racehorse, severely shattered his hind pastern during a training exercise at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, and had to be euthanized. On that same day another equine athlete also suffered a catastrophic injury, and on Feb. 25 a third horse in three days had to be put down. This was the peak of a wave of catastrophic injuries at Santa Anita beginning in late December 2018 that would reach 23 total by the end of March—a sharp increase from previous years. When the fatalities reached their peak, the California Horse Racing Board and Santa Anita Park management announced their decision to close the track for evaluation. Mick Peterson, director of the University of Kentucky’s Agricultural Equine Programs and an analyst for Santa Anita track soil, was brought in to evaluate the racing surface and attempt to resolve the issues leading to horse injuries during training and racing. Peterson noted that heavy winter rains had led to track “segregation,” a process in which fine material in the top surface cushion moves to the inside rail as water washes across the track surface. He issued a call for ground-penetrating radar tests and further analysis. “We have two responsibilities,” Peterson stated, “to find out what happened and to fix it so it does not happen again.”

Scrutiny of the surface— and below the surface The Stronach Group, owners of Santa Anita Park, issued a statement in early March acknowledging the track’s altered composition due to heavy rains over the winter. “I honestly don’t think there’s a problem, but weather has been a factor,” said COO Tim Ritvo. He admitted that the track had been floated and sealed a lot, “so that it’s tighter than it has been.” The ownership group brought in Racing Services Testing Lab (RSTL)—an organization that analyzes, maintains and enhances racing surfaces for consistency and safety—for additional work on the track at Santa Anita. 72

Synephrine, Equine

Prohibited Banned Substance

The FEI would like to warn the equestrian community regarding synephrine, a substance listed as a Banned Substance (Specified Substance*) on the Equine Prohibited Substances List. A high number of samples taken from horses under the Equine AntiDoping and Controlled Medication Programme have tested positive for the substance. Although investigations into the sources of the positive cases are still ongoing, the FEI would like to warn stakeholders of synephrine which may be found in the horse’s environment and advise on measures that can be taken to prevent a positive finding.

Synephrine is a stimulant which can cause vasoconstriction, an increased heart rate and is used as a weight loss aid. In certain parts of the world, synephrine can be found in plants such as common rush (Juncus usitatus), Mullumbimby couch (Cyperus brevifolus) and the leaves of citrus trees (e.g. mandarin, orange and lemon). Synephrine has also been detected in Teff grass hay in some countries. It can also be found as an ingredient of herbal and nutritional supplements, and commonly found in the peel extract of bitter orange (also known as Seville orange) which is used as a flavouring agent. Measures that can be taken to prevent positive findings include using reputable suppliers of hay, feed and supplements, checking the horse’s environment for plants containing synephrine, and ensuring that any personnel taking supplements or other products containing synephrine wash their hands thoroughly after coming into contact with the substance. Additionally, it is recommended that samples are kept of batches of hay, feed and supplements given to competition horses to enable a thorough investigation to take place should the horse test positive for synephrine. The FEI urges stakeholders to be vigilant of possible sources of synephrine in the horse’s environment and implement management practices to prevent contamination or inadvertent ingestion of the substance.

PRCA COWBOY JOSH FROST EYES LINDERMAN AWARD BY TRACY RENCK | MAY 29, 2019 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Josh Frost appreciates ProRodeo history. With that in mind, the Utah cowboy is making a concerted effort to try and win the prestigious Linderman Award. Frost’s main event is bull riding. He also is a tie-down roper and steer wrestler. “I’ve made the (RAM) Wilderness Circuit Finals (Rodeo) twice (in tie-down roping), I just haven’t steer wrestled a whole lot,” said Frost, 23. “It’s always been one of my goals to try and win the Linderman. I got to practice steer wrestling a bunch this winter with that goal in mind. My brother (Joe) won it (the Linderman) and a guy I went to college with, Trell Etbauer, won it several times. It is a prestigious award. I want to win it this year, that’s my goal. If I win it once, I will keep doing it because it is such a cool award.” Etbauer won the Linderman in 2008-11 and 2013. Joe Frost, 26, captured the Linderman Award in 2014. To be in the running for the Linderman Award, cowboys must win at least $1,000 in a minimum of three events and at least one of those must include one roughstock and one timed event. “I’m entered pretty much in all my circuit rodeos in all three events (bull riding, tie-down roping and steer wrestling),” the 5-foot-8, 155-pound cowboy said. “I’m quite a bit smaller than a lot of the guys in steer wrestling, so I’m just trying to get that $1,000 won. I’ve steer wrestled my whole life, but the size thing always made it a little harder. I made the College National Finals once in steer wrestling, so I’m not bad at it. I just have to capitalize when I have a really good steer.” Frost said his opportunity to ride a really good horse that belongs to fellow steer wrestler Chet Boren is a boost. “He’s a good steer wrestler, and he’s letting me ride his horse, which should help me,” Frost said. “I’m entered up in seven or eight rodeos the next two weeks, and I’m excited to see what I can do, especially in steer wrestling. The No. 1 goal this year for me is to make the NFR in bull riding, and then through June I’m going to the circuit rodeos hard and trying to get some money won in (tie-down roping) and get qualified for the Linderman. Come July, I’m going to ride the bulls pretty hard.” The Linderman Award, named after ProRodeo Hall of Fame cowboy Bill Linderman, recognizes cowboys who perform at both ends of the arena. Linderman won six world championships, two in the all-around (1950, 1953), two in saddle bronc riding (1945, 1950), and one each in bareback riding (1943) and steer wrestling (1950). 76

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Merit Award Program

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Merit Award program was created to recognize elite equine athletes that steadily succeed throughout their reined cow horse show career. Merit awards are determined by the horse’s NRCHA lifetime earnings – whether win checks are earned at regional or national level shows. The current Merit Award

levels are: Certificate of Ability, Superior Cow Horse Award and Supreme Reined Cow Horse. Earnings won in the Limited or “boxing” classes are only applicable for the Certificate of Ability level. The NRCHA Board appreciates and recognizes the value Limited horses and riders contribute to the Association, and in return, have added a new award to the longstanding program. Starting in

2019, Non Pro Limited and Youth Limited riders can apply for the Non Pro Limited Achievement Award, a new level of recognition specifically designed for horses that excel in the Limited or “boxing” classes. The horse must have earned a minimum $15,000 The horse must have earned a minimum of $1,000 in Limited Aged Events, such as Derbies or Futurities. This money can be earned in either fence class

or boxing classes. A minimum of $10,000 must be earned in Horse Show Category 1 Limited or “boxing” classes, including monies earned in the Select and 13 and Under divisions. Monies earned in Category 2 classes will not count towards the award Non Pro Limited Achievement Award recipients will receive a 16” x 20” custom wood plaque that includes a picture of their choice, the achievement certificate and NRCHA logo. All Merit Awards are presented at the NRCHA Year-End Banquet, held during the Celebration of Champions show in February. To apply for the Merit Award Program, complete the application and submit a one-time application fee of $50.00 to the NRCHA Office by November 15 of the award year. All applicants are eligible for all levels of the Merit Award Program upon completion of each requirement. The NRCHA office calculates the applied horse’s show records and automatically processes the awards when each level is achieved. For many reined cow horse owners and riders, achieving Merit status is an honor to be treasured. Receiving an NRCHA Merit Award is a true testament of a horse’s consistent performance through all phases of traditional Vaquero training. By Hayley Keck Almost one year, nearly 330 days, has passed. So much money has been invested. The endless waiting has come to an end, and now you have a precious little foal nursing alongside your broodmare. With this large investment you have made into just a few hundred pounds of cuteness, it is important to ensure your newborn foal gets the most protection possible, both from momma and your management practices. What he or she will become later in life is all

82

How to Boost Your Foal’s Immune System up to you. Passive Immunity – Nature’s Way Although the foal is born with a capable immune system, many aspects of it are still undeveloped. For example, these young ones are not born with any antibodies - the blood proteins that attack the antigens that can make them sick. Due to this deficiency, they have to depend on their mom to provide a special first milk called colostrum. Colostrum is a nutrient-

rich concentration of protective antibodies specifically designed to give baby what it needs for its first few months at life. Providing your foal with colostrum is often called “passive immunity” and must be provided by mom or by bottle within the first few hours of life. Active Immunity – Proper Vaccinations

In order for this passive immunity to be effective, proper vaccination of your broodmare is critical, since those

JUNE 2019

antibodies are developed by the mare herself. Without properly vaccinating your broodmare, your foal may be left vulnerable to diseases that otherwise could have been prevented. By the time the foal reaches four months, the colostrum’s ability to protect the baby will wear off, and the foal will begin to be challenged by its environment, helping form its immune system. According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), foal vaccinations should begin around three to four months of age with boosters in four-week intervals. Because practices vary based on region and situation, discuss with your veterinarian the best strategy for vaccinating your young one. An Extra Boost In addition to passive and active immunity, another resource to keep in your toolbox is Vitalize® Equine Recovery Paste. There is no doubt that seeing the world for the first time, fighting life’s first challenges, being poked by needles and then later taken away from your mother will create tremendous stress in your foal’s life. This stress leaves your animal more vulnerable to illness and will increase its occurrences of digestive upset. Not to mention, nearly 70% of the immune cells live in the gut, so nurturing the digestive system will consequently nurture your baby, as well. To help boost your foal’s immune system at any time in its life and combat stress, the Recovery Paste is your go-to product. It delivers a dose of the precision prebiotic Amaferm® that increases the “good microbes” in the gut, MOS to decrease the “bad microbes” in the gut, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals to help give them a leg-up in life. The Recovery Paste is also beneficial to mom after she has endured the stress of labor. In fact, mares are often prone to colic post-delivery due to a shift in her internal organs and microbial population. Learn how to mitigate the risk of post-foaling colic. Like anything in life, protecting your most valuable assets should be a priority, which is no different during foaling season. Be sure to provide your baby with its “first milk,” vaccinate your mare properly, form a strategy with your vet a regarding your foal’s vaccination schedule, and keep tubes of Vitalize Equine Recovery Paste in the barn at all times.

Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Celebrates 40th Anniversary 10, 1989 • Opening of the Hall’s expansion Aug. 10, 1996 • The dedication of The World Champions’ Pavilion Aug. 10, 2001

BY MATT NABER

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame is celebrating its 40th anniversary throughout 2019, starting with a new exhibit outlining some of professional rodeo’s historical moments. “This exhibit gives our guests a taste of the various collections we have here at the Hall all at once,” said ProRodeo Hall of Fame Director Kent Sturman. “Since we are unable to have all of these items out on display year-round, visitors can see a little bit of the amazing history we are preserving here, all leading up to the 40-year celebration we are planning at the end of summer.” The museum’s ruby anniversary kicked off with an exhibit entitled “ProRodeo Hall of Fame: First 40 Years” in the Hall’s 101 Gallery on May 1. The exhibit will be featured through September. "The Hall of Fame is unique in

that it is the only heritage center in the world dedicated solely to the sport of professional rodeo," Sturman said. "There is no other museum on earth like it." The exhibit showcases a sampling of pieces from many of the permanent

collections the Hall has. Photographs of milestone events in the Hall’s 40 years of history are on display, including: • Opening Day Celebration Aug. 6, 1979 • “The Champ” statue dedication Aug.

The various collections featured in the display include a wide range of rodeo memorabilia, such as: • Photos dating back to 1919 from the Panoramic Photo Collection • Artwork from the Chris LeDoux Collection • Personal memorabilia from the Casey Tibbs Collection • Items from the Hafley-Shelton Wild West Show Collection • The Hesston NFR Buckle Collection • The Ardourel Bit and Spur Collection • Rodeo clown statues from the Heap Collection • Photographs by Ben Allen and Lewis Portnoy from the Rodeo Photograph Collection • Artwork from the Artist and the Bucking Horse Collection • Western dinnerware from the Short Collection

Fox Finishes First at Las Vegas Days Rodeo

Las Vegas, Nevada—Sometimes when it feels like life—or rodeo life—has thrown a roadblock into your path, it’s helpful to remember that you may just need to find a detour. In the past year, Idaho cowgirl Darby Fox has truly learned this lesson after watching her plans change several times over. Late last summer, she received a phone call from former WPRA Rookie of the Year Cayla (Melby) Small. Small had been riding a nice roan gelding named Barts Blu Jeans and the horse’s owners had decided to sell. “She called me and asked if I wanted to come try him,” Fox remembers. Busy rodeoing in her home circuit, the Wilderness Circuit, Fox left her rig with her dad and caught a plane from Utah. “I flew to Oklahoma, tried him and brought him home.” By Holy Bart, a son of Dash Ta Fame, and out of Sweet Alibis, the horse was bred by John and Cindy Baltezore and trained by Jolene Jones. Small campaigned him at some futurities as a five year old in 2018 for owners Jessica and Johnny Asher. Fox instantly liked what she saw and felt.

“He was really fast,” she notes, “and I really liked him.” Fox did not grow up in a rodeo family. In fact, she found the sport when her family moved to Idaho when she was five years old. “Our neighbor was [horse trainer] Jerry Gorrell and his granddaughter was about my age. She junior rodeoed and I just got exposed to it through her,” she says. “I fell in love with it.” Saying she didn’t get serious about barrel racing until she was a sophomore in high school, Fox has quickly made up for lost time. After her rookie season in 2014, Fox has twice finished inside the top 50 of the WPRA World standings in the last three years and found herself placing in some of pro rodeo’s most prestigious events. With her top rodeo horse Fancy as well as several capable backups, Fox planned to take her time getting with Blue Jeans, her new acquisition. But life threw another curve ball her way. Fancy was injured when she got

her foot caught in a stall door while in Denver for the National Western Stock Show in January.

With her main mount out of action for awhile, Fox set about regrouping and making a new plan. She arrived in California for the spring run with a full herd — nine horses in tow—but truly missing Fancy, who loves the big outdoor runs offered during April and May on the West Coast. “She loves these pens but I’ve come to realize that everything happens for a reason,” she states. “With her down, it’s given me extra time to focus on him.” Though she rode a different horse to begin the spring run in Red Bluff, Blue Jeans got the call in Clovis and she noted that he made a fast run that just missed a check. “We made it back [to the performances],” she noted, “and I felt

like he was getting better and better in the big pens. I’m getting to know him better.” A former Wilderness Circuit finalist including a seventh place finish in 2018, Fox has changed her goals for the 2019 season. Fancy is expected to be back in action by summer, just in time for the circuit rodeo schedule to hit high gear. “We’ll see how strong she comes back. I’m planning to just stick to my circuit rodeos and see how he progresses,” she says of the now just six year old Blue Jeans. “The circuit finals and getting with him are my biggest focus right now.” Fox took a big step towards the Ram Wilderness Circuit Finals with a big win at Las Vegas Days over Mother’s Day weekend. Las Vegas has a long tradition of hosting pro rodeo as a celebration of the western roots of the city. Helldorado Days began during the construction of nearby Hoover Dam in the 1930’s and continued to evolve over the years, nearly always including a rodeo along with other festivities such as a downtown parade and spearheaded for much of the time by the local Elks club.

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

Strictly Diesel Tip for June Can I get an oil change please? This statement is said in our service department on a daily basis. Can I get an oil change please? These words are more important than ever these days. With the newer emission legal trucks with (DPFs) diesel particulate filters, this statement if more important than ever.

Although your manufacturer of your diesel pickup will tell you that you can go ten thousand or more miles between oil changes, don’t believe it. Sure, additive packages in the engine oil we use have come a long way since the 80’s and 90’s, however, your engine and the emissions components on the truck you drive have changed as well. So why do the

kind of maintenance. Here are some reasons why changing your oil more often will help you. Nate Brekken 1. Less engine wear, which means your truck will last longer 2. Less frequent regens, your engine oil will be cleaner 3. Better fuel economy, use the oil your manufacturer recommends, synthetic oil is now the way to go. Dino oil should not be used due to more frequent regens and higher fuel usage. Here are some things that happen when your oil change intervals go for an extended length of time.

manufacturers allow higher mile oil changes? Everyone is looking for the truck with the least amount of maintenance needed. In reality, ALL of them need the same

FENCING SPECIALIST! MARE MOTELS PIPE CORRALS

Dirtier. FYI-your DPF

1.More regens occur due to the engine oil being Dirtier. FYIyour DPF can not burn off any engine oil. They are designed to burn off the soot produced from the fuel your diesel engine burns. 2.Over full crankcase - this happens when regens are not completed, and or happening more often due to dirty crankcase engine oil and other concerns. 3.Engine wear and tear - caused by the above concern, which means you may have expensive engine repairs in your future. There are more reasons to list for both, but hopefully this helps with the good and the bad. Strictly Diesel recommends oil change intervals at five thousand miles. Regardless of the year of your truck, this oil change interval will help YOU help your truck last longer, use less fuel, and keep a smile on your face while you use your truck for whatever it is you do. BLM Honors Outstanding Volunteers Arizona Volunteers Recognized - Walt & Kathy Horsfall, Lifetime Achievement

WASHINGTON – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will honor some of their most dedicated volunteers this week at the agency’s 2019 Making a Difference National Volunteer Awards. Volunteers play a critical role in helping the BLM welcome millions of visitors annually to more than 245 million acres of

92

public lands across the American West. The annual awards, which recognize exceptional volunteer service on BLM-managed lands, will be presented during a special awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m. EDT in Washington, D.C., and live via video teleconference on

www.blm.gov/live. “It’s important to recognize and celebrate the contributions made by our dedicated volunteers,” said Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt. “I’m continually humbled and inspired by the enthusiasm and hard work of these outstanding individuals as each of you have made

JUNE 2019

a lasting impact on our public lands. Thank you on behalf of the places you safeguard for all Americans, and thank you on behalf of the people whose lives you’ve touched through your generosity.” In 2018, over 30,000 volunteers contributed nearly one million hours of service, providing the equivalent of more than $24 million in labor and enabling BLM to help more Americans experience their public lands. These hard-working volunteers help monitor trails, manage wild horses, keep campers safe, and provide environmental education, interpretation, and other visitor services. “The BLM has only about 9,000 employees to sustainably manage hundreds of millions of acres of public lands for a range of multiple uses. While our employees are exceptionally dedicated, the support they receive from our volunteers is essential to helping our agency achieve its mission for the American people,” said Casey Hammond, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management, exercising the authority of the BLM Director. “It is a privilege to recognize these incredible people for their tireless efforts.” The 2019 awardees and their BLM nominating offices are: Tracy Greenwood, Lifetime Achievement, Mother Lode Field Office (CA), for consistent management of the Briceburg Visitor Center at the Merced River Recreation Area since 2000. Walt & Kathy Horsfall, Lifetime Achievement, Safford Field Office (AZ), for their service to the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area, collecting data on hundreds of miles of roads around the Gila Box Riparian NCA. Phil & Chriscinda Jamison, Lifetime Achievement, Northeastern States District (ES), for more than 15 years in support of the Wild Horse and Burro Program in the BLM Eastern States Office. Thomas Parkinson & Peter Kearns, Outstanding Achievement, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument (AZ), for 400 hours of volunteer service in 2018, contributing to multiple programs on the Parashant. While not as prevalent as in previous years, West Nile virus remains a significant threat to equine health By David W. Ramey, DVM Although it does not dominate the equine health headlines in the same manner it did nearly two decades ago, West Nile virus (WNV) is an everpresent threat, and one about which veterinarians should remind horse owners to be vigilant. For example, last year, health officials confirmed 31 cases of WNV in Ohio, which was more than twice as many cases than in 2017. Even in California, with its arid climate, approximately 20 cases per year have been reported since 2009.

West Nile Virus Update

animals in the process. The virus’s morbidity is perhaps unappreciated; as of 2015, more than 27,000 horses in the U.S. have been infected since the disease was first identified. WNV also is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S. WNV virus is maintained in the wild bird population and spread between birds by mosquitoes. High levels of WNV circulate in the

bloodstream of birds, making them the virus’s natural reservoir. When mosquitoes feed on infected birds, they acquire WNV in blood meals. They then pass it on to other birds, animals, and people. Neither horses nor humans are thought to be a reservoir of infection to other animals. It does not appear mosquitoes feeding on an infected horse or human can ingest enough of the virus to transmit

it to other animals or humans. As such, horses and humans are considered “dead-end hosts.” West Nile virus infections After having been bitten by a mosquito, not all infected horses show clinical signs, which can vary, including in severity. The more severe signs result from encephalitis. stic tests; animals that have been vaccinated against WNV and have not been exposed to the virus will test negative on the WNV IgM capture ELISA test.

What is West Nile virus?

Isolated in Uganda in 1937, West Nile virus was first detected stateside in 1999 in the New York City area. WNV is a member of the flavivirus genus and belongs to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of the family Flaviviridae. After its introduction, the virus subsequently spread throughout the U.S. and Canada via mosquitoes, infecting birds, humans, horses, and other

Clinical signs of EIA can vary, depending on the virulence and strain of the virus, the infective dose, and the horse’s own susceptibility By David Ramey, DVM In January, four horses in Rutherford County, Tenn., were euthanized after contracting equine infectious anemia (EIA). Six other

Understanding equine infectious anemia horses were quarantined after an initial negative test, pending a second test. Such incidents highlight the reasons equine veterinarians should be vigilant in their surveillance for this incurable viral disease. In fact, in 2017, 80 EIApositive horses were identified in the U.S., with 38 premises testing positive for the disease (Figure 1). What is equine infectious anemia?

EIA is a viral disease affecting only members of the equidae family (horses, ponies, zebras, mules, and donkeys). It is caused by an RNA virus from the Lentivirus, a genus of Retroviridae. EIA remains an uncommon, albeit persistent problem both in this country and abroad. While EIA is not a direct threat to human health, it is a reportable disease in all the U.S.

How is the disease transmitted?

The most important mode of transmission of EIA is via bloodfeeding insects, especially biting flies such as horse flies, deer flies, and, possibly, stable flies. Horses may react strongly to biting flies; their defensive behaviors can interrupt feeding by the insect. This makes the flies particularly efficient transmitters of EIA because when a horse reacts, the fly typically moves on to another one. Viral replication does not occur in flies; virus-infected blood is transferred between horses, usually those in close proximity to each other. The likelihood of a horse being infected is directly related to how much blood remains on the mouthparts of the insect after a meal. While EIA is typically considered a blood-borne infection, in fact, all the horse’s body tissues and fluids have the potential to be infectious, especially when virus levels are high during clinical disease episodes. Blood-contaminated syringes, needles, or surgical equipment also can easily transmit the disease, as can transfusion of infective blood or blood products. It is possible, although rare, for a pregnant mare to transmit the disease to her fetus during pregnancy.

What are EIA’s clinical signs?

Clinical signs of EIA can vary, depending on the virulence and strain of the virus, the infective dose, and the horse’s own susceptibility. The disease may be acute or chronic. The severity of clinical signs has a direct relationship to the amount of virus present in the infected horse. Incubation can take two weeks to two months. The disease typically progresses through phases. Typically, the initial acute phase of EIA lasts one to three days. The clinical signs include depression, and thrombocytopenia. a very high fever, severe thrombocytopenia, depression, and death. Following the initial phase, EIA infections typically cause a prolonged period associated with episodic clinical signs more typically associated with the disease, including recurrent fever, anemia, petechial hemorrhages on mucous membranes, edema, muscle weakness, and muscle wasting. Episodes may occur within days, weeks, or months of each other. 98

Vitamin E: Necessary to horses, but there’s a lot to learn

By David W. Ramey, DVM

Vitamin E seems to be at the forefront of many discussions about horse nutrition these days.

THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the

Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range” (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.

Contrary to appearances, vitamin E is not a vitamin in and of itself. Rather, it’s a group of eight compounds—four tocopherols and four tocotrienols—that are fat soluble. This vitamin is important for myriad functions in the horse’s body, including but not limited to, and in no particular order, the eyes, the reproductive tract, and the neuromuscular system. The most important function of vitamin E seems to be as a biological antioxidant. In this way, and probably by other ways that haven’t been determined yet, vitamin E serves to maintain many normal body functions of the horse. Vitamin E-related problems generally manifest in the horse’s neuromuscular system. In young horses, these include nutritional myodegeneration, neuroaxonal dystrophy, and equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy; in older horses, a lack of vitamin E is associated with vitamin E-deficient muscle problems or equine motor neuron disease. Happily, for most horses, there is ample vitamin E provided in the diet. Green grass is a great source of vitamin E—most things that are green have a good bit of it. Those horses lucky enough to have access to green grass also get lots of vitamin E. That said, horses do not require vitamin E on a daily basis. Horses store vitamin E quite well in the liver; they can last many months in the face of inadequate dietary intake. This, then, explains why horses that don’t have access to green grass in the winter don’t immediately start showing problems related to a lack of vitamin E. An adult horse with previous adequate dietary intake can go approximately 18 months without vitamin E before problems become noticeable. Further complicating the picture, some horses show no apparent bad effects of a vitamin E deficiency (as determined by serum levels). Unfortunately, one cannot simply draw blood, check vitamin E levels, and be sure a horse has a problem. A proper diagnosis of a vitamin E-related problem is made with a combination of vitamin E status, clinical signs, continued page 103

and muscle biopsy results, as well as eliminating other diseases with similar signs. A normal vitamin E level for a horse is considered to be greater than 2 μg/ml.

Supplementing vitamin E

It is important to be aware of the type of vitamin E that is being supplemented. Vitamin E comes in two main types: natural or synthetic. Here’s a case where “natural” really is better. The natural form of vitamin E is in an “RRR” form. This can either come in a powder (RRR-αTocopherol acetate) or as a water-dispersible liquid (RRR-αTocopherol). The powder is more stable and has a longer shelf life, but isn’t absorbed quite as well as is the liquid. The “synthetic” form of vitamin E can be noted by its spelling. Synthetic vitamin E is identified as “All-rac-α-Tocopheryl acetate” or “dl-α-Tocopheryl-acetate” on the supplement label. Tests have shown the synthetic form of vitamin E is not absorbed as well by the horse as is the natural form. If it has been determined a horse should be supplemented with vitamin E, it makes sense to use the formulation the horse can use most efficiently. 1) Some horses don’t respond to vitamin E supplementation, even when it’s given at appropriate levels and in a bioavailable form. 2) A good number of horses that develop diseases related to a deficiency of vitamin E do not respond to vitamin E supplementation (estimates are that could amount to as many as 40 percent of vitamin E-deficient horses). 3) There’s an injectable form of vitamin E available for horses that also contains selenium. However, the injectable form does not have enough bioavailable vitamin E to affect a horse’s serum levels of vitamin E. 4) Vitamin E supplementation should be done for a specific reason, and should be followed with serum tests to see if supplementation is effective. 5) Vitamin E levels greater than 4 μg/ml (micrograms/ml) are too high.

6) Giving extra vitamin E to any horse with a suspected neurological problem or muscle problem doesn’t make much sense if the horse has normal serum vitamin E levels. 7) In human medicine, there is little in the way of good research to show vitamin E supplements are beneficial. Most good human trials from the past few years have reported inconclusive, or even negative, results. Further, vitamin E supplements might actually be harmful in some circumstances.
