Outlaw No Stranger To Having Back Against The Wall In Vegas

BY : Justin Felisko

Chase Outlaw will not be thinking about a Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour championship or qualifying for the World Finals when he steps foot inside the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa on Saturday night. Unlike last year, when Outlaw needed a marquee showing at the Velocity Tour Finals to qualify for the World Finals, 2019 is all about a gold buckle destination. Velocity Finals The two-time Velocity Tour Finals event winner has only one thing on his mind. “It is the Velocity Finals,” Outlaw said. “I am not going to be a Velocity Champion. I am not worried about that. It is a duckload of points, a lot of money at it. It is right before the (World) Finals, and if you win it, then you are going to be hot going into the World Finals. “You will be feeling good.” Last year, Outlaw began the Velocity Tour Finals as the No. 35-ranked rider in the world standings. Outlaw had missed the first six months of the season because of a third reconstructive shoulder surgery since 2015. He then had to sit out an additional two months after he shattered almost every bone in his face at the 2018 TPD event at Cheyenne Frontier Days. Still, Outlaw was adamant about qualifying for a seventh consecutive World Finals, and he did just that. Outlaw, who returned to competition on Oct. 6 ranked 76th in the world standings, went 2-for-3 to win the 2018 Velocity Tour Finals and solidify himself a spot at the 2018 World Finals as the No. 22-ranked rider. Was it safe to say Outlaw knew his back was against the wall? “A little bit, I guess,” Outlaw 22

said. “I knew I didn’t have a choice but to win.” Outside of the severity of his facial injuries, which required 68 screws, 11 plates and four pieces of surgical mesh and 12-plus hours of emergency surgery that fateful night in Wyoming, 2018 was reminiscent of another late-season come-from-behind performance from Outlaw. The Hamburg, Arkansas, bull rider clinched himself a trip to the 2016 World Finals by winning the regular-season premier series finale in Tucson, Arizona, that season. He had entered that event 31st in the world standings and was hanging on to one of the last World Finals qualification spots. Outlaw then built off that performance by going 3-for-4 to win the 2016 Velocity Tour Finals and Velocity Tour championship, taking home a total of $87,946.93. Now his back is against a different wall heading into the 2019 Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals on Saturday and Sunday in Las Vegas. Outlaw is the No. 3-ranked bull rider in the world standings, and he trails world leader Jose Vitor Leme by 1,495.83 points in the world

standings. The eight-year veteran is eligible for the Velocity Tour Finals after the PBR competition committee decided last week to take the Top 7 riders from the world standings who had not qualified for the Velocity Tour Finals via the Velocity Tour standings. The committee also decided to allow riders with PBR World Champion provisional status to compete. Two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney was the only rider to accept the invitation. There are 96 ABBI Classic/Derby bulls slated to buck. Leme – the No. 1-ranked rider in the Velocity Tour – and No. 2 Jess Lockwood – the 2019 Touring Pro Division champion – are also competing in Vegas this weekend. Fans can watch the event on RidePass live at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday and 7 p.m. ET on Sunday. Outlaw has won his only two trips to the Velocity Tour Finals, and a third victory this weekend could almost get him to within 1,000 points of Leme ahead of the five-day, action-packed 2019 PBR World Finals at T-Mobile Arena (Nov. 6-10). One rider can earn 440 points

NOVEMBER 2019

at the Velocity Tour Finals by winning all three rounds (80 points per win) and the event average (200). “Time for a three-peat,” Outlaw said. Outlaw has already set career highs in qualified rides (43), wins (four) and 90-point rides (7) this season on the Unleash The Beast. Historically, any rider within 2,000 world points of the world No. 1 ranking at the start of the World Finals is a legitimate contender for the season’s World Championship. However, 3,300 points are available across the five days of competition. Outlaw said part of the lure of the Velocity Finals is that it has a smaller, intimate feel before the intensity of the week is elevated during the World Finals at T-Mobile Arena. “It is just Vegas,” Outlaw, who also went 5-for-6 last year at the World Finals, said. “It is laid back. It is kind of like a backyard bull riding. It is different, and not in a bad way. It is one you want to do good at. It is a lot of points and a lot of money. And you are at the South Point. You can have a good time afterwards.”

‘Watchmen’s’ Jeremy Irons to Play Horse Trainer Henry Cecil in ‘Frankel’

By Leo Barraclough

Jeremy Irons, currently appearing in HBO’s “Watchmen” and an Oscar winner with “Reversal of Fortune,” is to star in and produce biopic “Frankel,” which WaZabi Films will be selling at next week’s AFM. Irons plays horse trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who fought years of failure and illness to make Frankel the greatest champion racehorse of all time, unbeaten in all 14 starts, and bowing out with an emotional victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse. Irons produces the film, which is expected to go into production in the spring, alongside Andrew Berg and John Sachs of Eclipse Films. WaZabi copresidents Anick Poirier and Lorne Price said they “immediately connected with the determination and resilience of the story.” WaZabi’s slate also includes drama “Coda,” about a pianist struggling with stage fright late in his career. Flavor Preferences of Horses: Surprising Insight

For some horses, acceptance of feeds, supplements, and even medications doesn’t pose a problem. For fussy eaters, though, flavor must be used for enticement. Which flavors do horses like best? The answer may surprise you! “In the past, studies examined several flavors that horses might like, including cherry, apple, garlic, carrot, and citrus. In a study done at Kentucky Equine Research, cherry was consumed at a higher rate than the other flavors or plain oats. In other studies, no single flavoring has been preferred over another,” explained Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a nutritionist with Kentucky Equine Research.

According to new studies, new flavorings outshone others: anise and fenugreek. The least enticing selections were orange, garlic, and cinnamon. Other flavors that were tested yet apparently not quite up to

snuff included apple, peppermint, banana, and vanilla. “Even apple and carrot flavors rated more poorly on the list than anise and fenugreek,” Crandell said. Clearly, taste preferences among horses vary, just as they do among people. “Having an idea of what the flavor preferences are for horses, rather than what humans think horses would enjoy, could help immensely when selecting feeds or supplements. This holds especially true for hard keepers when offering forage or concentrates,” advised Crandell.

Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested in Lake View Terrace Crash That Killed A suspected hit-and-run Horses and Injured Riders: LAPD driver has been arrested after being accused of killing two horses and critically injuring the married couple riding them in a Lake View Terrace crash, authorities said Saturday. Rolando Garcia, 32, was driving along Foothill Boulevard near Wheatland Avenue when he

struck the horseback riders about 9:40 p.m. on Friday, according to LAPD. The 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van he was driving then collided into a wall and came to a stop. He has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police said. Both horses were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said, and the riders were left severely

injured. They have since been listed in stable condition. Footage of the crash site shows the minivan, with its front end ripped off, just outside the gate of a home. A website established to collect funds for the injured couple set up by family friend Lesly Diaz described them as Polo and his

The couple suffered numerous broken bones, including fractured vertebrae, the friend said. "(The) horses were unfortunately killed instantly. Recovery can be lengthy for Polo and his wife Alejandra." Kevin Davis, president of the local Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council, said horseback riding at night is a safety issue local leaders are trying to fix. "It's not unusual and it has been an ongoing concern for us because we've had other people killed or injured in the area," Davis said. "We're working to try to increase equestrian safety, but unfortunately based on what happened last night, our efforts still need to be increased." Bail for Garcia was set at $50,000 pending his initial court appearance, Los Angeles County booking records show. He had no prior criminal convictions listed in Los Angeles County Superior Court records. No other details have been released. 46

Tuf Cooper Prepares for Third NSFR

By Tracy Renck

A year ago, Tuf Cooper saw a chance to win a steer roping world championship slip through his grasp. Cooper came in as the season leader to the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping, but finished as the reserve world champion to Scott Snedecor. Snedecor earned $122,931 to edge Cooper ($113,157) for the gold buckle.

Cooper heads to his third consecutive Clem McSpadden NFSR third in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $55,846. The NFSR will be at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Nov. 2223, with the top 15 steer ropers vying for a world championship and a share of $425,000. “I just need to keep working hard on making improvements and realize how blessed I am to qualify for another steer roping finals,” said Cooper, 29. “I’m excited for the opportunity I have.” Cooper trails leader and brother-in-law Trevor Brazile ($71,845) and Vin Fisher Jr.

($59,844) in the world standings. Cooper, a four-time world champion – three in tie-down roping (2011-12, 2014) and one in all-around (2017) – is shooting for his first NFSR title. He had an outstanding 2018 steer roping regular season, establishing the PRCA record for money earned in a season before the NFSR with $89,427. The previous record was set in 1998 by the legendary Guy Allen with $87,927. However, Cooper had a rough NFSR, registering a no-time in six of the 10 rounds. He finished 15th

in the NFSR average. “The 10-head average plays a big role in the world championship, and that’s why we play the game to win the world championship,” Cooper said. “In order to do well in the average, you have to catch, and I need to learn from my mistakes that I had last year. Mistakes are important because they give you a chance to go work on things and get them right. It’s about the process. You can’t fast-forward to things that you want in life. That’s not how it works. We have to live each moment as it comes." Cooper bounced back on the

second day of the 2018 NFSR. He won Round 6 in 8.3 seconds, tying the fastest run in NFSR history with Cash Myers (2006), Jess Tierney (2015) and Allen (2016). Cooper then placed fourth in Round 7 with an 11.0-second run and won Round 9 with a 9.5-second run. This year at the NFSR, Cooper plans on riding Trip, 11, and knows defeating Brazile for the world title will not be easy. This is Brazile’s 22nd NFSR qualification. He’s won six NFSR gold buckles (2006-07, 2011 and 2013-15). Brazile has won a PRCA-record 24 gold buckles – in addition to his NFSR buckles, he's also won a PRCA-record 14 in allaround (2002-04, 2006-15, 2018), tie-down roping (2007, 2009-10) and team roping (2010). “Trevor and I will do some practicing together before the NFSR,” Cooper said. “He’s dang sure one of the best steer ropers ever. I’m still a sponge just trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can. He’s the best cowboy to ever compete. I’m going to put myself in the right environment and help him out as much as I can in the practice pen because being around someone like that rubs off on you. You put yourself around winners, you become a winner.”

$100,000 reward in search for burro killers

A reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the shooting deaths of 46 wild burros in California has grown to $100,000, following a $32,000 pledge from the Roy Dunlap Foundation.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call 800782-7463 or visit http://www.wetip. com. Callers may remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons responsible for the deaths of these federally protected animals. Since May, 46 wild burros have been found dead from gunshot wounds on public 50

land managed by the Bureau of Land Management along the Interstate 15 corridor between Halloran Springs, California, and Primm, Nevada. Anyone found guilty of killing a wild burro can face a penalty of up to $2,000, a year in prison or both. These penalties can apply to each count charged. BLM law enforcement is leading an ongoing investigation in coordination with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “The Roy Dunlap Foundation hopes that by making this $32,000 pledge will help draw enough attention to bring the killer or killers to justice,” the private nonprofit

animal welfare organization said in a statement. The foundation made its pledge in cooperation with Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation, a national nonprofit wild horse and burro advocacy organization. The BLM offered an initial reward of $10,000 for the deaths in the Clark Mountain Herd Area. Return to Freedom has pledged $5,000 toward the reward fund, which was matched with a $5,000 pledge from the ASPCA. Other organizations that have pledged money toward the reward fund are The Platero Project ($32,500), National Mustang Association ($5,000), Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue ($2,500), the Humane Society of the United States ($2,500), Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue

NOVEMBER 2019

NCHA REMEMBERS Bob Kingsley, 1939 – 2019

by Sally Harrison

Bob Kingsley, country music radio legend and generous benefactor, as well as dear friend to the cutting community, passed away at his home in Weatherford, Tex., October 17.

“While there is no doubt that the immediate road ahead will push me and challenge my resolve, I want you to know I am blessed to be working with the very best in the medical profession, and they have a plan to deal with this awful disease,” Kingsley shared through Rubin Media, on Oct. 9, just eight days before his death from bladder cancer. The Country Music Hall of Fame radio host found his calling while serving in the U.S. Air Force, where his rich and distinctive baritone voice brought him to the attention of Armed Forces Radio. When he returned to civilian life, he began a career in radio that spanned six decades.

In 1973, Bob Kingsley became producer of nationally syndicated American Country Countdown, and served as the show’s host and Country Music’s most distinguished voice from 1978 through 2005. Having moved from Los Angeles to Weatherford in 1995, in order to be close to the cutting industry, Bob and his wife and business partner, Nan, began producing Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40, currently carried by over 300 stations, in 2006 from their studio in Weatherford. Bob Kingsley fell in love with cutting when country star and cutter Lynn Anderson put him on a cutting horse in 1993, to raise money for a charity, and shortly after, he was invited to an NCHA roundup on Helen Groves’ ranch.

At about the same time, Bob and Nan met NCHA show and sale producer Ben Emison, and his wife Jan, who would become their mentors and close friends. “We moved here in 1995 and the reason was because of horses and cattle,” said Bob. “I really wanted to learn and to get involved. And it turned to be exactly the right move. My main objective was to raise (cutting horses).” In 2004, Bob Kingsley purchased Little Pepto Gal from Crystal Creek Ranch in Weatherford. The Peptoboonsmal daughter had been trained and shown by Matt Gaines as 2002 NCHA Open Horse of the Year. In 2004, Kingsley showed Little Pepto Gal to win the NCHA Classic Challenge Non-Pro. It was

his first time to show her and his first finals as a Non-Pro. “It was the most amazing ride of my life,” said Bob. “I wish everybody could have an opportunity to ride a horse like that.” By the time she was retired, Little Pepto Gal had official NCHA earnings of $490,951. As a broodmare she has produced earners of $1.2 million, including Little Pepto Cat LTE $601,910 bred by Bob and Nan Kingsley’s Bluestem Ranch. Bob Kingsley’s love and enthusiasm for cutting was contagious. Over the years he introduced celebrities from the Country Music world to the sport through participation in the NCHA Celebrity Cutting, held during the NCHA Futurity. Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40 has been an official NCHA sponsor since 1995, and Bob never turned down a request to serve as “the voice of cutting” for NCHA special events and presentations. Bob and Nan’s generosity has also extended to many charities in the larger community, as well as in Weatherford and Parker County. A memorial service will be held for Bob Kingsley on Friday, October 18 at Doss Heritage Center, 1400 Texas Drive, Weatherford, Texas 76086.

WHEN GERONIMO BECAME A COWBOY Very few people know that in 1895, Congress appropriated money to buy a herd of cattle for the Apache prisoners of war being held at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The commander there, Captain Scott, had troopers in his command who were cowboys who helped train the Apaches to become ranchers. Already excellent horsemen to begin with, Geronimo and the Chiricahuas learned how to flank and rope cattle. The Apaches took to being cowboys like fish to water. The first winter many of the Apaches didn’t have horses and ran on foot herding the cattle. By the turn of the twentieth century, the Apaches were some of the most successful and prominent ranchers in all of Oklahoma. This is just one of the incredible, but true stories, about Geronimo that is in the new book, “The Illustrated Life & Times of Geronimo.” Here, and on the opposite page, are just a few of the other aspects of his epic life you will learn about.

Percy Hill and Rick Freeman face a charge of theft after the 350-pound wrought iron sculpture went missing on Oct. 2, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The metal stallion was recovered at a home in Golden Valley, Arizona. According to Gallant, the statue has become a popular piece of art in the East County community. At least once a week, she gets an offer from someone who wants to buy it. And, in early October, the horse certainly caught someone's eye. What's Up: 12-Foot Metal Horse Stolen in El CajonWhat's Up: 12-Foot Metal Horse Stolen in El Cajon A surveillance camera at the store caught the thief in the act at around 2 a.m. Gallant said the suspect appeared to be strategic in the way he approached the statue. “The video we have of him is coming across here. Normally, someone would walk straight across the parking lot and head over to the horse, but he doesn't do that. He goes across the front of the store, so he avoids all these cameras,” she told NBC 7. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department described Hill as a 56-year-old from Golden Valley, Arizona, and Freeman as a 62-year-old from Lakeside, California.

The Breeders’ Trust Pleasure Stakes consist of Western pleasure and hunter under saddle classes in two age categories each—2-yearolds and non-pro 3- and 4-yearolds. APHA welcomed ranch work competitors of all breeds to the Ranch Work Championships. The event drew 80 entries where exhibitors competed in three classes—ranch course, ranch penning and ranch roping—for $6,900 in prize money. This marked the first year mounted shooting world championships took place at the World Show (previously held at external competitions) and it proved to be a good move. Entries more than tripled over last year. Exhibitors took home a combined $7,300 in this exciting competition. Halter competition took a surge at the 2019 World Show. APHA once again partnered with the World Conformation Horse Association (WCHA) to offer big money to halter enthusiasts through two premier halter events: the APHA World Championship Show and the (all-breed) WCHA Breeder’s Championship and Big Money Futurities. All in all, more than $640,000 was up for grabs for halter horses—that included more than $165,000 in APHA Platinum Breeders’ Futurity classes (29% increase over 2018).

Nevada Official: Solving Wild Horse Problem will take $5B, 15 years The acting head of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management says it will take $5 billion and 15 years to get an overpopulation of wild horses under control. William Perry Pendley told reporters Wednesday several developments have made him more optimistic about his agency’s ability to eventually shrink the size of the herds from 88,000 to the 27,000 he says the range can sustain ecologically. Pendley says the agency adopted out more than 7,000 mustangs and burros captured last year — the most in 15 years. He says that helps clear space in government holding pens so they can accelerate roundups while scientists develop new fertility-control drugs. He says a new coalition of animal welfare advocates and ranchers is helping promote new solutions and Congress appears willing to help.

19 Show Horses dead after fire breaks out at Georgia barn Tragedy struck Saturday in Georgia when a barn went up in a fiery blaze, leaving 19 show horses dead.

Firefighters found the animals dead inside the wooden stable near Cartersville when they arrived to the scene of a fire that broke out early Saturday morning, an official with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office said. Officials believe strong winds in the area accelerated the spread of the fire in the barn, according to Fire Marshall Gary Garland, who considers the blaze likely to be an accident. Blake Carney, who owns the barn, described the horrific incident as “every horse person’s worst nightmare" in an interview with Atlanta news station WAGATV. Carney was attending a horse show out of town at the time of the fire. An unidentified caretaker was able to escape the fire with a dog and a smaller horse, according to that report. The caretaker had been inside an apartment that makes up part of the barn. Carney buried the horses Monday. He also lost personal items in the fire. Officials believe the fire began near chips that are used for the horses’ bedding. Cartersville is located roughly 43 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Missing Steers Reward Now $26,000

High Brow Cat 1988 – 2019

High Brow Cat, cutting’s alltime leading sire, was humanely euthanized earlier this week at the age of 31. It is hard to imagine a time when “Cat” was not part of the cutting vernacular. The title “Alltime Leading Sire” seems meager in light of High Brow Cat’s impact on the sport. At the time of his death, his offspring had earned over $79 million in NCHA competition, twice the amount of his closest rivals Smart Little Lena and Dual Rey, and he held an unassailable record with average earnings of $44,392 for 1,784 performers. In addition, his sons have sired earners of over $140 million, and his daughters have produced earners of $39 million. Bred by Hanes Chatham and Stewart Sewell, High Brow Cat was sired by High Brow Hickory and out of the Smart Little Lena daughter Smart Little Kitty, who Jack Waggoner purchased in 1988 with the suckling High Brow Cat at her side. Smart Little Kitty had lost the sight in one of her eyes as a young filly and was never shown. But Waggoner had loved her dam, Doc’s Kitty, the 1969 NCHA Futurity Open reserve champion and 1970 NCHA Derby champion. “When I bought Smart Little Kitty, I bought her for her son (High Brow Cat), who looked just like Doc’s Kitty. She had short, thick cannon bones and a big rear end. She could rock back on her rear and hold her front off the ground, just like High Brow Cat. “When he was a baby, he’d play with me and hide behind his mother, and ran around and moved

like a cat. So I named him High Brow Cat.” High Brow Cat scored his first championship at five, under Faron Hightower in the 1993 Augusta Futurity Classic. It was the same year his first crop – seven foals – was born. By the time High Brow Cat was retired from showing, in 1995 with career earnings of $110,102, he had produced two more crops, for a total of 36 foals. From the first crop came Cats

Summertime, a gelding who placed sixth in the 1996 NCHA Futurity under Bill Freeman and would go on to earn $347,360. With the exception of 2000, from his first crop in 1996, through 2002, High Brow Cat was represented by at least one or two offspring in every NCHA Futurity Open finals, including his son A Hocus Pocus Cat, who was reserve champion of the 1999 Futurity. When One Smart Lookin Cat won

NOVEMBER 2019

the Futurity in 2003, he was one of seven High Brow Cat Futurity finalists that year; in 2004 there were ten Futurity finalists, and in 2006, there were a record 12. In the 16-year span from 2003 through 2018, eight of the NCHA Futurity Open champions were sired by High Brow Cat, in addition to four other Futurity champions produced by High Brow Cat daughters and one champion sired by his son Metallic Cat, who won the Futurity in 2008.

Nevada horses euthanized after contracting contagious virus Nevada wildlife officials have ordered a quarantine on a Boulder City horse facility after multiple horses contracted a contagious virus before being euthanized. The state Department of Agriculture say lab results confirmed animals at the Horseman’s Association Property tested positive for horse herpes. Department officials say the quarantine is a precautionary measure to avoid the spread of Equine Herpesvirus-1 among the 500 horses on the southwest Nevada property. Officials say the virus is a highly transferrable disease between horses, or between horses and humans. Horse owners say signs of the disease appear to be fever, cough or runny nose.

How the 'Horse Soldiers' helped liberate Af Days after the September 11 attacks, teams of US special-operations troops heading for Afghanistan to pursue the planners of the attacks. But fighting on the ground in Afghanistan presented a new test for the highly experienced Special Forces soldiers sent into to complete the mission.

Before the 9/11 attacks, then-Capt. Mark Nutsch never expected he would use horseback riding — a skill he learned growing up on a Kansas cattle ranch — in battle. But weeks later on October 19, 2001, Nutsch and a team of 11 other Green

Berets with the 5th Special Forces Group's Operational Detachment Alpha 595 were inserted into Afghanistan to liberate the region from the Taliban without tanks or trucks. Just horses. "We didn't know horses were going to be involved until about 48 hours prior to our insertion when we were given the phrase 'be prepared to use indigenous animals for transportation,'" Nutsch told Military Times.

"No one had horse saddles ready to go, so we just ... figured it out on the ground and we rode the local horses with local saddles and equipment," Nutsch said. ODA 595 was one of several Special Forces teams sent into Afghanistan to topple the Taliban weeks after the 9/11 attacks as part of an unconventional mission known as Task Force Dagger. The insurgent group had provided a safe haven for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Upon arrival, the team had a lot to learn — including how to ride the horses the locals rode within hours of touching down in Afghanistan. "We're figuring out, how do you carry your rifle? What gear do I keep on my body? What can I put on the horse? What do I leave behind? You know, can I trust the guys next to me? Is there an ambush up ahead?" Nutsch said. "There's a whole lot of things going on besides having this half-wild animal that you're trying to figure out how to ride," Nutsch said. According to Nutsch, it was "pure fate" that he grew up on a cattle ranch and already knew his way around horses. Not everyone was as experienced as 72

NOVEMBER 2019

fghanistan from the Taliban 18 years ago Nutsch. One of the other men on the team had ridden horses a little in high school, and it was a completely new experience for the other 10 members. The men essentially received a horseback riding crash course involving hours on the horses as soon as they arrived in Afghanistan — a painful process that demanded using new muscles. Furthermore, the saddles and riding gear wasn't designed to accommodate the Americans, who were larger and heavier than their Afghanistan counterparts, according to an Army news release. Broken stirrups were repaired with parachute cargo straps. Although Nutsch said there was a steep learning curve at first, the men adapted well and the horses actually provided them with some flexibility. For example, they could ride at any time during the day or night, in all terrain types. In New York City near Ground Zero, a statue of a Special Forces soldier on horseback is erected to honor the special operations teams who headed into Afghanistan in the weeks following the 9/11 attacks. Additionally, Nutsch and ODA 595's story is the subject of the book, "Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan" that was published in 2010. The book is the inspiration behind the Jerry Bruckheimerproduced film called "12 Strong" that was released in 2018 and stars Chris Hemsworth as Capt. Mitch Nelson, a character based on Nutsch.

Leme And Lockwood Bringing 2017 Predictions To Fruition

By Justin Felisko

Leme and Lockwood bringing 2017 predictions to fruition LAS VEGAS – The two superstars of the 2017 PBR World Finals stood next to each other on the rainbow confetti-covered stage inside T-Mobile Arena on November 5, 2017, with the sparkling World Championship trophy standing behind them. Jess Lockwood was still dabbing his eyes as he recovered from the emotional toll of becoming the PBR’s youngest World Champion at 20 years old.

To his left stood an unknown bull riding sensation named Jose Vitor Leme. The 21-year-old’s best way to communicate just how life-changing his 6-for-6 World Finals event victory was without a translator was an ear-to-ear grin and a broken English “thank you.” It was one of the best days of their lives as they posed for a photo holding their giant award presentation checks and prestigious belt buckles. The two youngsters had met only 10 days earlier when Leme made his North American debut at the 2017 Velocity Tour Finals and Lockwood was beginning his last-minute rally for the World Championship after arriving at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa at No. 6 in the world standings. Lockwood and Leme – the 2017 PBR Brazil champion – had spoken pleasantries to each other as best they could, but the communication barrier between an American kid from rural Montana and the former semi-pro soccer player from Ribas Do Rio Pardo, Brazil, made it tough. Regardless, their otherworldly bull riding ability connected them during that week and a half in Las Vegas, and it was the prodigies’ potential that the majority of PBR experts witnessed during those six rounds at the 2017 PBR World Finals that had them thinking 2017

LOCKWOOD AND LEME was only the beginning. These two seemed poised to be on a crash course to a World Championship battle in the future. They seemed likely to be tied at the hip for this era’s next clash of champions. “You could look at those two little guys and not have much trouble believing that those two are great in their own right,” two-time World Champion and CBS Sports Network analyst Justin McBride said this week. Injuries, money, fame and life can prevent expectations from coming to fruition. Just last year, Lockwood had to shut down the second half of his season, and pursuit of defending his gold buckle, because of a torn right groin. Meanwhile, Leme continued his march to stardom and world title contention in 2018, ultimately finishing runner-up to World Champion Kaique Pacheco and 422.5 points short of a $1 million bonus. Leme is 88-for-163 (53.99%) with 16 90-point rides, five event wins and three 15/15 Bucking Battle victories in 50 premier series events since winning the 2017 PBR World Finals. He is the No. 1 bull rider in the world. Lockwood is 60-for-113

(53.09%) with 12 90-point rides, five event wins and five 15/15 Bucking Battle victories in 35 events since claiming the 2017 World Championship. He is No. 2 in the world. The future predicted by bull riding fortunetellers two years ago has now become reality. The top two bull riders in the world head into Las Vegas this weekend for the 2019 Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals and 2019 PBR World Finals separated by only 496.66 points in the standings. “These two have really both stepped their game up,” McBride said. “They are going after every rank bull because they know they have to beat the other guy. They are not laying up, hoping the other guy won’t stay on. They are trying to beat them on the scoreboard, and that creates some pretty special stuff.” Leme will continue his pursuit of his first gold buckle Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET (RidePass) at the South Point Arena with Lockwood hot on his heels. A second world title would make Lockwood the sixth rider in PBR history to win multiple world titles. Leme has drawn Little Joe (2-0, all levels) while Lockwood faces

NOVEMBER 2019

Hammered Down (1-0, all levels). The Velocity Tour Finals can possibly affect the world title race in a multitude of ways. As mentioned earlier, Lockwood picked up 227.5 points at the 2017 Velocity Finals. He would go on to overcome a 655-point deficit to win the world title. On the opposite end of the spectrum, world No. 1 Kaique Pacheco tore ligaments in his knee last year, which almost prevented him from winning the 2018 world title. One rider can earn a maximum of 440 points toward the world standings at the Velocity Tour Finals this weekend. No. 3 Chase Outlaw (-1,495.83 points) is the only other rider mathematically alive in the world title race competing this weekend at the Velocity Tour Finals. He is slated to face Yatesy Down Under (1-3) in Round 1. Nowadays, Leme and Lockwood are well aware of who the other is after standing next to each other on that T-Mobile Arena stage two years ago. They both have become fans of the other. Leme texted Lockwood earlier this season after he broke his collarbone at the 2019 WinStar World Casino and Resort Global Cup USA, presented by Monster Energy in February, wishing him a quick recovery. Friendship aside, only one can leave Las Vegas with the $1 million PBR World Championship. There are still nine rounds of bull riding left before a World Champion is crowned on Nov. 10, and you can expect the two superstars to continue to throw haymakers and counter punches every step of the way. “Jose is a little competitor,” McBride said. “That has made Jess have to be better. Jess has made Jose have to be better. I am really happy for both of them on that front. That is pretty cool.” Follow Justin Felisko on Twitter @jfelisko

Ways to Prevent 7.3L & 6.0L Injector Failures

Now that winter is approaching it means us Arizonians will be braving our extreme cold in long sleeves, shorts, and flip flops! For some diesel owners it means you might notice new symptoms when you start the engine in the morning. Common concerns we see and hear about include longer than normal cranking times, smoke on startup, loss of power, runs rough until the engine warms up or the transmission shifts

78

very hard when leaving the house. Keep reading below for some tips that will help prevent these common issues. If your truck is already showing signs, these may improve performance enough to help you postpone a costly repair. The fuel injectors in your 7.3L & 6.0L are quite different than most, but like all other injectors good maintenance will keep them working for the long haul. These two engines both use injectors that operate with the same concept (electronic, fuel pressure, high pressure oil) but the 6.0L injectors are much more

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken problematic and they can fail in a few ways. The most common failure we see is when oil residue builds up inside the of the injector and causes the spool valve to move slowly or stick which is known as stiction. In the early stages the symptoms typically go away once the engine warms up but as time goes on, they

NOVEMBER 2019

may not clear up or you may experience a power loss or the engine may not start at all. If you are not experiencing Nate Brekken the symptoms described above, then the maintenance tips below will reduce your chances of these failures. If they are something you have experienced, then these same tips may improve injector function or cure it altogether. The first step is to make sure the oil system is clean which is performed using an oil cleaner from BG Products. It is added to the engine oil after it’s warmed up and driven for at least 20-30 minutes followed up by changing the oil and filter. We then add one gallon of Hot Shot Secret Stiction Eliminator or 8oz of REV X Oil Additive to the engine oil, both products will lubricate the internals of the injector better than oil alone. Since we’re trying to restore injectors, we also recommend treating the fuel side of things starting with a high strength cleaner with follow up doses of conditioner from BG Products or Hot Shot Secret. Additives for the fuel will reduce failures seen due to contamination and rust while keeping the pumps and injector nozzles clean. It typically takes a day or two of driving before improvements are noticed. If that happens then you’ll want to get in a routine of using the oil additives at each oil change with the oil cleaner used about once a year and continue using the diesel fuel treatments as well. If these steps are taken and there is no noticeable difference, then you may have one or more injectors that will need to be replaced or have a problem somewhere else in the engine, fuel or electrical system. Don’t be discouraged and think those products you purchased were a waste as they will clean and lubricate many other components. All the additives and filters can be purchased here at Strictly Diesel or we can perform the maintenance in our shop and save you the mess. Also keep in mind diagnosing problems is our specialty so if you want to know what’s wrong before trying these products or have used them with little to no improvements then let us know, we’re happy to help! 2019 AQHA/WPRA Horse of the Year

After winning the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo in August, Dona Kay Rule said it had been a blessed season and the blessings continue for the NFR bound cowgirl. Rule of Minco, Oklahoma, recently learned that her 10-year old sorrel gelding High Valor had been voted on by her peers as the 2019 Purina Horse of the Year presented by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Valor, out of Rare High by Valiant Hero, really came into his own this season carrying his jockey to new heights and her first Wrangler NFR qualification. Rule

has had the sorrel for six years and has taken him through the building blocks of what she hoped would have him ready for these opportunities. “He wasn’t a barrel horse when I got him,” Rule said during an interview last year. “He was just a broke gelding. We bought him from Lana Merrick from Canadian River Quarter Horses. She was having trouble trying to juggle work obligations and having a horse like that and didn’t feel like she was doing him justice, so she sold him to me, and I promised her I would never sell him unless he went back to her.” Rule a very accomplished trainer has sold a fair share of quality horses. That’s her business, so keeping Valor as a horse for her to be competitive on has been the focus. “I knew he was really, really powerful, and I brought him along slow,” she said. “I was forced to get on him after my other horse (A Juicy Adventure) got a careerending injury, so Valor just had to step up. When he realized what I was asking him to do … man, he went to work. The owner of the PRCA/ AQHA/WPRA "Horses of the Year" in each category will be awarded $5,000 and an AQHA bronze trophy during the PRCA Awards Banquet in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel & Casino on Dec. 4. Second place will receive $3,000 and third place will receive $2,000. Finishing second in the WPRA voting was KN Fab Gift of Fame “JLo” ridden by Ivy ConradoSaebens and owned by Kenny Nichols and James Barron. Two horses finished in a tie for third so they will split the $2,000 and those great horses were Freckles Ta Fame “Can Man” ridden by Shali Lord and owned by Joe and Carla Spitz and An Oakie With Cash “Louie” ridden by Lisa Lockhart and owned by Lisa and husband Grady.

Larger-than-life Secretariat statue unveiled at Keeneland

Commissioned by the Triangle Foundation, which seeks to beautify Lexington, Ky., a larger-than-life statue of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat was unveiled Saturday at Keeneland. It's Big Red, indeed.

Sculptor Jocelyn Russell and her husband, Michael Dubail, created the bronze monument in Oklahoma. The statue traveled to Kentucky this week and will soon take

up permanent residence within a traffic circle minutes from downtown, where Alexandria Drive intersects with Old Frankfort Pike. The unveiling coincided not only with Keeneland's fall meet but also ongoing events for the Secretariat Festival, which annually celebrates the champion colt. Racing fans took in the first look at the statue outside Keeneland's Sales Pavilion. Secretariat is cast wearing the 1A saddle towel he donned while setting the current record time of 1:59.4 in the Kentucky Derby. 82

NFR Arena Record Caps Off 2019 WPRA World Finals

Tillar Murray Photo by James Phifer, Rodeobum.com

The 2019 WPRA World Finals came to an electric finish with Wrangler NFR qualifier Tillar Murray setting a new arena record inside the Extraco Event Center in Waco, Texas.

Murray, of Fort Worth, Texas, won the short round in the WPRA Card Holder Race on Sunday, October 27 stopping the clock in a time of 15.534 seconds. The previous record prior to today was held by Taylor Langdon with a 15.57 set earlier this month at the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo. That time was bested twice during the WPRA World Finals with two-time WPRA World Champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi running Ima Famous Babe stopping the clock in 15.564 seconds as the ninth runner out on Sunday. Murray came eight runners on Royal Star Commander later and

90

turned in the record run. “I can always tell when Commander walks down the alley if it’s going to be a nice run and today he came to win,” said Murray after the record run. “Win or lose though, I treasure every run I get to make on him.” Alex Lang captured the average title in the cardholder race an earned a spot in the 2020 RodeoHouston. Lang finished with 47.223 on three runs on Angels On The Moon, barely edging first-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Dona Kay Rule who finished with a 47.225 on the 2019 Barrel Racing Horse of the Year High Valor. Pozzi Tonozzi was third in a total time of 47.250 and Murray took fifth with a 47.481. Pozzo Tonozzi took the average title in the Derby division riding Ima Famous Babe with a two –run time of 31.336, followed by Kelsey Lutjen on VF Chasin Cans with a 31.440. Hilary Van Gerpen won the world title aboard PC Judge Cash N Lace the same mount she won the WPRA Futurity World Title a year ago. Kassie Mowry aboard Famous Ladies Man took the futurity average title at the WPRA World Finals with a 31.712, while Cayla Small on Slick N Black was second in 31.993. Karen Gleason won the world title aboard Mobetta Fame. Colleen Vondra took home the Futurity 2D World Title on SCF Lakewood Fame. In the Junior Division it was McKenzie Morgan taking home her first WPRA Junior World Championship. Morgan of Maryville, Tennessee won over $40,500 on the year and although she didn’t compete in Waco, her lead was too great for anyone to catch her. Taking home the average title in the junior division from Waco was Paige Jones on High Cotton Lane. She finished with a two run time of 31.577 to edge Alexis Lynch on Firin To Be A Hero with a 32.165.

JOSH FROST WINS 2019 LINDERMAN AWARD Focusing on improving his steer wrestling skills paid off for Josh Frost. Frost earned $2,067 in that event in the 2019 season. Couple that with the $119,561 he earned in bull riding and $8,281 in tie-down roping, and

Frost was the runaway winner for the 2019 Linderman Award. “It has been one of my goals for awhile to win the Linderman,” said Frost, 24. “It’s a prestigious award. I have (tie-down) roped my whole life, but I was never able to qualify (for the Linderman) with my steer wrestling. But I practiced a bunch this winter and it made a difference, and I got qualified for steer wrestling in the summer.” To be eligible for the Linderman Award, a cowboy must win at least $1,000 in three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock and one timed event. “Winning this award is not something very many people can do,” Josh said. “You really have to be a cowboy to not only compete, but to win money on both ends of the arena. In my mind, you have to be the ultimate cowboy to be able to be successful in the roughstock and timed events.” The Linderman Award, named after ProRodeo Hall of Fame cowboy Bill Linderman, recognizes cowboys who perform at both ends of the arena. Linderman won six world championships, two in the all-around (1950, 1953), two in saddle bronc riding (1945, 1950) and one each in bareback riding (1943) and steer wrestling (1950). Kyle Whitaker had won the last four Linderman Awards and has won a PRCA-record 10 in his career.

92

NOVEMBER 2019

Frost is the second member of his family to capture the distinguished Linderman Award, as his older brother, Joe, 27, captured the award in 2014.

AQHA - Potential Relocation to Fort Worth

In February, it was announced that a group of external stakeholders is raising funds for a possible relocation of the American Quarter Horse Association to Fort Worth, Texas. Yesterday, the Fort Worth City Council approved a 50-year ground lease for the American Quarter Horse Foundation. This action by the Fort Worth City Council does not mean AQHA has made a definitive commitment to relocate. This is only a step in the process of the possibility of a move. There is no timeline for construction or relocation, as relocation is not guaranteed at this point. It’s important to understand that a move is not imminent and there is no plan for future staffing changes. We greatly appreciate our Amarillo employees, who are focused on providing quality service to AQHA members around the world. We plan to keep the board of directors, members and the Association’s employees updated each step of the way as this possible relocation continues to develop.
