Three industry professionals were recognized by their peers March 4 at the 2018 American Quarter Horse Association Convention in Jacksonville, Florida. The Don Burt Professional Horseman of the Year, AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year and Most Valuable Professional awards were presented during the Association’s General Membership Meeting. Shawn Harrelton of Gilbert, Arizona, rode his step-father’s homebred gelding, Just A Genius, at the 2018 Working Ranch Cowboys Association Lowell Goemmer Memorial Ranch Rodeo in Wickenburg, Arizona, on March 23, and was awarded the AQHA Top Horse award. Just A Genius, aka “Short Bus,” is a 2010 gelding by Super Eyed Eagle and out of Conchos Lady 002 by War Concho. He is bred and owned by John T. Weldy of Gilbert, Arizona. For Shawn, the award was quite special to him since he has raised and trained Short Bus, and on his first trip from home, the gelding was able to handle the events with ease. “He did not make any bad moves, and he did really good in

the sorting and roping events,” Shawn says. “He takes everything in stride, and he’s just a super easy-going horse.” Shawn has also raised and trained five-full brothers to Short Bus, so he is confident the gelding will have a promising future. “He’s got a good mind on him, and he’s been an easy horse to work with,” Shawn says. He has been working with Short Bus on the heel side to get him prepared for team roping competitions, and since Short Bus handled the ranch rodeo so well, Shawn plans to take him to the Priefert World Series of Team Roping qualifier in Wickenburg, Arizona, on April 6-8. The Working Ranch Cowboys Association hosts ranch rodeos across the West culminating in the World Championship Ranch Rodeo, which is November 10-13 in Amarillo. The WRCA showcases the skills of the working ranch cowboy and raises money for the WRCA Foundation, which provides scholarship and crisis assistance to working ranch cowboys and their immediate family.

Sun Circuit’s Winning Combination Results in Record Growth

When Sun Circuit debuted on its March dates last year, the show was the largest it had ever been. Now that record has been smashed once again. The 2018 Sun Circuit celebrated its 45th Anniversary surpassing last year’s stellar numbers by 10%. Over 19,000 class entries encompassed everything from jumping to roping and included a range of exhibitors from Level 1 to World Champions. In addition to AQHA classes, the show hosted NSBA, NRHA, Versatility Ranch Horse and All-Breed and Color Breed classes. The predictably ideal weather and the show dates certainly resonate with exhibitors. The mood over the 9 days March 3-11 was buoyant. Show Director and AzQHA CEO Doug Huls commented, “It’s really exciting to see how much it has grown the last couple of years.” Huls highlighted some other factors that exhibitors are cheering, “People really like the show schedule. Its very workable. I think that they also appreciate the number and quality of our awards.” The show also strives to exceed exhibitor expectations on every front. That includes keen insight on the types of classes and events that exhibitors want. Sun Circuit continues to expand its offerings to include more sectors of AQHA enthusiasts.

An astonishing amount of prizes, awards and give aways were distributed across all levels. A total of 34 saddles were awarded in reining, roping, cow horse, trail, pleasure, over fences, Versatility Ranch Horse and to All Around Champions. Rod Patrick Ostrich boots were awarded to 9 High Point Champions. Other prizes included buckles, trophies and cash. The prestige and size of Sun Circuit could be intimidating. However, exhibitors, family and friends seemed unanimous in the feeling that the show was fun, the classes were great and the staff went out of of their way to be helpful. “We love the donut cart,” was frequently exclaimed each morning as free coffee and donuts were circulated around the barns and arenas. The expansive WestWorld facilities in Scottsdale easily accommodated the increased numbers. As many as 8 arenas saw classes in a day, and an additional half dozen were available for warm-up. The increase in entries was seen just about everywhere. The Trail pen saw huge numbers all week. A whopping 133 L2 & L3 Senior horses and another 44 Juniors navigated the Don Lehman course. On the Amateur side, 69 Select and 45 Amateurs showed off their precision and timing. Level 1 Junior, Senior and Amateur Trail numbers were also very strong, and there was a high percentage of cross entering with NSBA across all divisions. Western Riding is another class that saw phenomenal entires. The Senior division had 73 horses on the pattern in L2 & L3 and another 49 in the L1. Junior and Amateur numbers edged up over last year as well. Ranch Riding, VRH Ranch Trail and Ranch on the Rail classes also showed their continued popularity with extremely large class numbers. The quality of the competition was top notch, yet the camaraderie around the arena was convivial. Sun Circuit has always drawn big numbers in Reining. This year the spins and slides were flying almost continuously in 26

the North Hall. The Junior division showed 62 entries, while Senior showed 79 between L2 & L3. Sun Circuit hosted the NSBA Riders Cup on March 6 & 7. A total purse of $75,000 was awarded, along with 29 beautiful silver cup trophies and NSBA medals. The annual event is awarded money in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Western Riding, Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Hunt Seat Equitation events. The large trophy cups were proudly displayed all over the barns at WestWorld after the event. Brody Galyean rode Cool Poco Dot in the All Age Limited Non Pro Western Pleasure to score the top marks in a field of twelve. His giant smile reflected brilliantly in the large Rider’s Cup trophy as he rode out of the arena knowing he earned $1,826.15. Keeping it in the family, Kristin Galyean won the Non Pro Western Pleasure and a check for $1,007.06 riding VS Lady in Red. The pair also took the top spots in Non Pro Western Riding and Junior Western Riding, earning an additional $3,257. Tina Volmer was delighted to find herself in the award presentations twice riding Beter Late Than Never. Tina won the All Ages Limited Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle and received $1,660.36. She followed up that win by claiming a $2,271 prize in the Non Pro Hun Seat Equitation. Thirteen showed in a tightly matched Senior Trail. When the scores were all tallied, it was Jason Martin’s ride on Heza Radical Zip, owned by Bonnie Sheren who topped the cards for $1,557. The pair switched gears and also won the trophy for Senior Western Riding, earning $1,794. Select Trail had 13 entries. Joanne Garnett received high marks for the day and added $1,217 to her earnings. At the conclusion of the Rider’s Cup, an Exhibitor Party sponsored by Suzy Johns served up great food and libations to a large crowd. The evening’s entertainment switched gears dramatically as the NSBA brought Donkey Races to Sun Circuit. 10 teams rode in 5 heats. Hilarity ensued when some of the finest equestrians on the planet discovered their skills were no match for a bunch of recalcitrant donkeys who seemed to truly enjoy dumping their riders in the dirt. The Smart Boons Fence Challenge is always a crowd pleasing spectacle of equine athleticism. Smart Boons owners, Eric and Wendy Dunn added $20,000 to the pot and 100% of the entry fees were added back. Twenty of the top cow horses in the nation and their riders put on a fantastic show for the enthusiastic crowd. The energy of the event was contagious as spectators whooped and hollered with each turn of the cow. Scores were held to the end, so the excitement continued to build. Corey Cushing was EmCee for the evening, interviewing each breathless

rider after their performance. After several heart thumping runs, Phil Ralls loped in on the flashy roan stallion, Call Me Mitch, owned by Estelle Roitblatt. The pair dominated their cow, diving into the stops, and turning with ease. It was clear they were going to be tough to beat. The crowd also cheered wildly for BJ Avila who was fast and fearless on Dera Cat owned by Rainlynn LLC. Cushing turned over his microphone and hopped aboard Sonita Lena Rey owned by Sheri Jamieson. They too turned in an exciting performance. All 20 exhibitors returns to the arena for scores and awards. Cushing’s run scored a 151, settling them into 3rd place. That earned a check for $3,825. Avila marked a 153 winning a check for $5,100. But it was Ralls and Mitch who edged out the pack with a 154, winning them a check for $6,375 and a beautiful custom Preston Williams Hardware trophy buckle. The pair combined that score with points earned in cutting, steer stopping and cow horse to claim the Golden Cowboy Award and an additional $2,250.

The Cinch Timed Event Challenge Roping has become a favorite event at Sun Circuit. Andrew Sharp rode Two Jack Benito Bar to take the Open heading with a payout of $1,470. Zane Bruce and Bar B picked up the second hole for $1,102. Then Zane came back in the heeling to win it for an additional $1,623. Dakota Kirchenschlager had two Armenia Quarter Horses mounts in the heeling and placed 2nd and 3rd for $2,244, On the Non Pro side, Garrett Hershberger rode Mom’s Hail Cat to have the fastest heading score to win $1,687. Cinco Cucharadas got Seth Jordan in place the fastest to take the top spot in the heeling, earning $ 1385.50. Chantz Stewart picked up the 2nd and 3rd holes on Shining Cielo and Oakies Wild William to earn a total of $1,915. Ropers also had a shot at cash in the Sun Circuit Roping Futurity. Clay Logan rode Bets Gin to take the Championship in the Heading, winning $3,600 and a Bob’s Custom Saddle. On the Heeling side, it was JD Yates aboard DT Shine Blue Brandy who put together the best 3 goes to earn $3,654 and a Bob’s Custom Saddle. Rogers Heaven Sent Ranch sponsored the Junior and Senior Bridle Spectaculars again this year which combine scores from cutting and cow horse. $2,500 was added to both divisions, with $1,250 going to the champion. The Junior Spectacular went to Dotted Lights with Tucker Clark aboard, while Smoking Red Pepper and Shadd Parkinson had the highest total score in the Senior. The Amateurs had their own Spectaculars. Lindsey Marie James received the highest combined score in cutting and cow horse to win $500, and Becky Stockett racked up the points in cutting and boxing to win $500. Sun Circuit offered a full slate of Versatility Ranch Horse classes during the first weekend for both AQHA and All Breed. The classes enjoyed very enthusiastic participation with large numbers, especially among amateurs. A Scottsdale Performance Saddle was awarded to the All Breed Amateur Champion Dana Avila, while Bob Grant won the saddle for VRH All Breed Open. Exhibitors didn’t always have to place first in a class to be a winner at Sun Circuit. Over $55,000 in give aways kept the fun and excitement going from start to finish.. AzQHA president Michelle Pearson and Dale Litton of the Prize Patrol relentlessly criss-crossed the WestWorld grounds ensuring everyone, at every level and discipline, had a shot at winning

something. Give aways came in many forms. The “Word of the Day” netted savvy exhibitors gift certificates from vendors, buckets of supplements and even jewelry. Being in the right place at the right time with the right trivia answer rewarded numerous people with gift certificates for hats, boots and more. The most talked about give aways involved the fun challenges that tested exhibitor skills not often seen at a horse show: bareback mounting for youth halter, back, turn and two-point for equitation, a long trot race in ranch riding, a boot scramble while leading your horse, relay races and more entertained everyone. The infamous bouncy horses returned, proving once again that reiners and cow horse riders just aren’t that good at bouncing across the arena. The Mimosa Jump Off Challenge was eagerly anticipated by the hunters. Some of them certainly practiced after last year. Riders cantered over a fence holding a flute of champagne and OJ. The one with most left in their glass took home a 50” TV. Two new challenges debuted this year. The Sun Circuit’s Got Talent turned the mike over to intrepid singers during the Seven Bar Lunch Party. Marcella Rierson wowed the crowd and won herself a $1,200 custom silver headstall. Playing up Scottsdale’s perfect weather, the ‘I Left This To Come To Sun Circuit’ Challenge encouraged exhibitors and their families to post their worst weather from back home on Facebook. Many truly nasty winter weather stories were shared. A team of Arizona judges rated them for the biggest yuck factor. Tracy Ingraham left 29 below zero with wind and snow to enjoy the show. If that wasn’t winning enough, she also was treated to a $1,500 Cavalia Odysseo Prize Pack including 4 VIP tickets and limo ride. A show this size is not only about fun and prizes. A great deal of effort and planning goes into the logistics to make it run smoothly. AzQHA is determined to keep Sun Circuit and the AZ Fall Championship on the leading edge of show technology. John Lyons “America’s Most Trusted Horseman” Starts New Venture Bringing Medical Science and People Together for Healing

A message from John: We are very excited to tell you all about the many changes that have happened over the past year.

Jody and I have been busy developing and launching a unique organization that will help people of all ages who are in need of medical treatment. We are in the process of building a multi-faceted medical research and treatment center Dream Ranch in Parachute, Colorado. This facility will focus on the medicinal qualities of hemp, providing choices and education in all areas of health and treatment. Our goal is to provide patients with access to the highest quality treatments available worldwide.

You've trusted me for more than 40 years with your horses, your safety, and in many cases with me leading you through the christian walk. My goals have never changed and they remain the same today. Jody and I have dedicated our lives to helping others and as many of you know, we are extremely passionate about doing so. We now have found a new way to help both people and animals through the use of CBD (cannabidiol) oil and Hemp related products. These products are truly amazing for your health and wellness based on customer feedbackand available research. We are not allowed to provide you with specific results but many people have said that it's good for arthritis, joint pain, chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain, multiple sclerosis, anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, schizophrenia, fighting cancer, nausea, menstrual cramps, lymes disease, effects of menopause, alzheimer's disease, dimentia, parkinson's diease, seizures, neurological disorders, diabetes, epilepsy, and promoting good cardiovascular health. In using CBD oil you get all the health benefits without the high! We are not saying that it can treat, cure, or prevent any disease but it has been found to very beneficial according to other people. We've been busy working with doctors, researchers, and other professionals to create a unique product line and multi-faceted medical research and treatment center and we'd love to help you too! Be sure to check out our products page and store where you'll find tinctures, lotions, sugar scrubs, gel caps, pain spray, body butters, vape pens, massage oils, edibles and more. For more information, please check out our new project at Johnlyons.com.

Perhaps you're wondering about what CBD is and how it is derived? Marijuana is a highly intricate plant with many different cannabinoids, but there are two main compounds from the plant, specifically CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is what gives you a high and has mind altering effects where as CBD is the major nonpsyhcoactive component which means there is no high. This is what makes CBD so popular among the medical community. To break it down as simple as possible let's use the comparison of a draft horse and miniature horse. Both of these animals are horses but yet they are entirely different breeds of horse. The draft horse is the work horse, big, heavy and strong, and can be ridden or used to pull a wagon. The miniature horse is much smaller and although can be ridden, it's generally only by small people. Yes mini's can pull a wagon too, but not as big or as far as a draft horse. So for comparison, CBD is the draft horse and THC is the miniature horse of the marijuana plant. 30

Why Is There So Much EHV-1 Popping Up This Year?

Here at the Paulick Report, it seems as though we have run more alerts about EHV-1 cases at racetracks and other facilities this year than ever before. Positive cases of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (the neurological form of EHV, which runs a greater risk of fatality) or EHV-1 have been reported in Thoroughbreds in New York, Kentucky, Arizona, Maryland, Oregon, and California so far in 2018. Much of our information comes from the Equine Disease Communication Center, a centralized source for official reports of infectious disease. The EDCC alerts come directly from state animal health or agriculture officials. Prior to the EDCC’s foundation, veterinarians noticed misinforma-

tion and confusion spreading in localities as horsemen tried to sort out fact and rumor in the face of an outbreak. Dr. Nathaniel White, director and administrative consultant for the EDCC, said the appearance of an increase in cases may be deceptive. For one thing, it’s important to remember to distinguish between EHV1, which may or may not result in neurological symptoms for a horse, and EHM. For another, White says more states have begun reporting to the EDCC as the center has become more established. “When EDCC started we were only getting a few states reporting diseases, including EHV-1. Those cases were neurologic cases diagnosed as Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy, the nervous form of the disease. Now that we have more states using the EDCC alerts it seems like there are more EHM cases,” he said. “Additionally we have had a few alerts for horses with a fever with a positive identification of EHV-1 and no neurologic disease. There may be an increased prevalence, but I suspect some of the increased numbers is having EDCC reporting cases which before the alerts were managed by each state with no national report.” Dr. Josie Traub-Dargatz, professor of equine internal medicine at Colorado State University, agreed that more data is needed before it’s scientifically safe to draw any conclusions about an increase in cases. “It is difficult to say if prevalence has changed or not as there is more states reporting now than in the past. If we get consistent reporting over next few years it will be more possible to compare across years,” she agreed. In the meantime, the American Association of Equine Practitioners has compiled a list of frequently-asked questions and control guidelines for horsemen concerned about EHV-1.

Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday at the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (PRCA/Hubbell photo)

Kinsel Breaks San Antonio Arena Record after their Wrangler National Finals Rodeo record-setting run

San Antonio rodeo fans got to see a barrel racing run that was one for the record books on Wednesday night.

Hailey Kinsel, from Cotulla, Texas, has won a check every time that she and her great mare DM Sissy Hayday have entered the AT&T Center. They had a clean sweep of Bracket 1, started the Semifinals as high money winners and ended them that way. Kinsel and her seven-year-old palomino mare that she calls Sister won $7,134 in their bracket. Then a third-place check in the first round of the Semifinals got her an additional $2,230. Kinsel and Sister were the second barrel racers to compete in the AT&T Center on Wednesday night. They made a nearly flawless run, stopped the clock in 13.60 seconds to set a new arena record. The previous record of 13.67 seconds was set by Sydni Blanchard in 2013. “I grew up coming to this rodeo,” Kinsel said. “We always bought tickets and it was a dream to just compete here. I felt like we had a pretty snappy run, but to set an arena record here, that’s pretty special.” The Texas A&M graduate is the reigning National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion. She graduated last May, competed at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming in June and went on to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last December where she finished the year as the reserve world champion. \

Ranching Heritage Winner

TS Sunnys Famous Jet earns cowboy mounted shooting world title, awards By Andrea Caudill By the narrowest of margins, TS Sunnys Famous Jet earned not only an AQHA world champion title, but also a nod as the leading AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horse at the recent AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships in Houston. The Ranching Heritage program spotlights the quality horses produced by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders. These horses showcase the qualities of a good working ranch horse and can succeed in many venues. They are also exclusively eligible to compete in Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges. Owners can check a horse’s Ranching Heritage eligibility by calling competition coordinator Terrie Lovelady at 806-3784341. For full details on the program, visit www.aqha.com/ranching. This year, AQHA began recognizing top Ranching Heritage-bred horses competing at various major competitions. The horse owner receives $250 and a specially created ranch-horse trophy, and the breeder also receives $250. This year, AQHA recognized TS Sunnys Famous Jet, a sorrel mare owned and shown by Cathy Papley of Settler, Alberta. The pair were the Select Amateur world champions. TS Sunnys Favorite Jet was bred in Montana by Treasure State Quarter Horses of Chinook, Montana. She is by PC Mr Sun Peppy and out of the Dash Ta Fame mare Jett Ta Fame. The Ranching Heritage-bred award came after a tie-breaker, as another Ranching Heritage-bred, WWR Kings Lone Star, was also crowned as the limited Select amateur world champion. WWR Kings Lone Star was ridden by owner Gerald McKelroy of Waco, Texas, and earned his first world champion title. The 6-year-old gray mare was bred by Fred and Elaine Gist of Midland, Texas, and is by Mr Forty Six King and out of the Tru Tru King mare Dr Gay Sadie.

Ice Cream at the O.K. Corral

Wyatt Earp enjoyed eating ice cream in Tombstone. In an estate case in 1925, Wyatt testified, “I met her [Jack Crabtree’s wife] at an ice cream parlor...on Fourth Street between Allen and Fremont...I used to go there pretty often. I liked ice cream and I met her over there.” The ice cream parlor Wyatt is referring to appears in the ad (lower left) which ran in the Tombstone Nugget in 1881. The idea of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday ordering ice cream in the wildest camp in the west (“l try the Huckleberry!”) is a sight to imagine. Wyatt, his brothers and Doc walked by this very ‚ “saloon” on their way to the gunfight.

If you love Tombstone, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, you will want to read these!

Ike Clanton (white apron) tries opening a restaurant in Tombstone in the early days of the camp. His efforts are not successful. Perhaps this picture casts some light on why. Today, a group of children from The Foundation for blind children of Phoenix had a rare opportunity to experience an amazing and moving adventure at Cavalia Odysseo in Scottsdale. The children, who rely heavily on their other senses to fully understand the world, were guided our artists through a sensory journey created specifically to meet their special needs. The group discovered our equestrian and acrobatic world through a variety of hands-on exercises. Members of the cast allowed the youth to touch the horse’s soft coats, brush and groom them. They smelled and touched the horses’ food and felt and tried the saddles. The young guests also played percussion with musicians, discovered the texture of the costumes and danced with acrobats. At the end of the tour, riders brought their horses to a full cantering speed, allowing the children to feel the ground quake beneath the incredible power of the equine stars. At the end of the tour, tickets to the

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR BLIND CHILDREN: The Foundation for Blind Children was founded in 1952 by parents of blind children who wanted services for their blind children in Phoenix, instead of having to send them to the State Institution for the Blind in Tucson. The Foundation for Blind Children serves the blind and visually impaired of all ages, from birth to currently 102 years old. As the only agency of its kind in Arizona, the Foundation for Blind Children is an essential resource to families and children with blindness or low vision. With three Valley locations (East Valley, West Valley and Central Phoenix), The Foundation for Blind Children strive to serve as “the” community’s resource for blind, visually impaired, and multi-handicapped children, adults, and their families.

tional Show, Colin Beals jumped headfirst into the world of Paints. He registered his first Paints with APHA soon thereafter, was elected as a national director in 1968 and served as president in 1973 and 1974. During his tenure as president, Colin spearheaded the concept of multi-judge APHA shows. The purchase of My Painted Robin put Colin and his Arizona ranch on the map. He bred nearly 275 Paints, including many national champions. Colin and his wife, Jean, also helped found the Arizona Paint Horse Club, serving as its president in 1963. Both Colin and his iconic stallion My Painted Robin were inducted into APHA’s third Hall of Fame class in 2014 and are members of the inaugural class of the APHC Hall of Fame as well. Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

USE NEPROFIN FOR:

Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

BEFORE NEPROFIN AVF USE

AFTER NEPROFIN AVF USE

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Kimzey wins nearly $10K at Fort Mohave X Bulls

FORT MOHAVE, Ariz. – Despite suffering a fractured pelvis less than two months ago, reigning four-time world champion bull rider Sage Kimzey was back in action and going full throttle as he won the Fort Mohave (Ariz.) PRCA Xtreme Bulls event on March 3. “I already had an outstanding winter and then after sitting off for a month because of a fractured pelvis, I had to win some money,” Kimzey said. “Getting back into bull riding and winning some money definitely feels good.” The 23-year-old Oklahoma cowboy had to take five weeks off after being stepped on by a bull on Jan. 5, but the fans in Fort Mohave never would have guessed it as he rode for 171 points on two head. Kimzey made an 85-point ride in the first round and returned with an 86 on Honeycutt Rodeo’s Cajun Heat in the final round to win the average and collect a grand total of $9,690. “The X Bulls are important,” Kimzey said. “Every year I won a bunch of money in the regular season and at the X Bulls, and the two go hand-inhand. It’s not mandatory to win them, but it’s a big help to go into the X Bulls and have success.” Kimzey is fresh off his fourth consecutive world title, and although his mind’s on the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, his real focus is on breaking Donnie Gay’s record for most bull riding world titles. Gay was the bull riding champion eight times (1974-77, 1979-81 and 1984). “That’s still the end game,” Kimzey said. Prior to striking gold at Fort Mohave, Kimzey was sitting at fourth in the 2018 Xtreme Bulls Standings with $16,611 and was leading the 2018 PRCA World Standings with $68,809. “I’d qualified for the All American Finals, and I haven’t done that in years past because it’s hard to go to that many small rodeos, and that’s where most of my money came from,” Kimzey said. “Then I went to the RAM Texas Circuit Finals and it set the rest of the season up for success.” Kimzey won both the All American Finals and the RAM Texas Circuit Finals, and now he’s got another major win for the 2018 season to keep the ball rolling as the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo approaches next month. “I want to keep doing what I’m doing – going to a bunch of rodeos and winning a bunch of money,” Kimzey said. “Every penny counts for sure once you get to Vegas.” Trevor Kastner won the first Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event of 2018 at Forth Worth, Texas, on Jan. 17, and Josh Frost won the second Xtreme Bulls event at San Antonio, Texas, on Feb. 24. The next Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event will be held April 27-28 at Del Rio, Texas.

NATE STRICTLY DIESEL : tip for April DEF and you DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. If you own a pickup truck that is newer you probably have a DEF tank on your truck. This tank is used to house the DEF fluid that is sprayed into your exhaust system. Yes, you read this right - this fluid is sprayed into your exhaust system. Why do the manufactures use this product? During the combustion process NOx gases are formed from the immense

heat of the combustion process. The DEF fluid is sprayed into your exhaust system, converting the NOx gases into nitrogen and water vapor - two harmless and naturally occurring components of the air we inhale every day.

In 1929, World Champion AllAround Cowboy Earl Thode was the first to be officially recognized with that title, coming the same year he won the saddle bronc world title. He won the saddle bronc crown again in 1931 and has long been acknowledged as one of ProRodeo’s best bronc riders. Thode was known among the best of the early-day bronc riders to use the fore-and-aft, full-stroke spurring style now required in saddle bronc riding. He had membership No. 36 in the Cowboy Turtles’ Association that formed in 1936. He worked as a rodeo judge and was arena director at Tucson’s La Fiesta de los Vaqueros from 1936-47.

The energy yield is approximately the same as an all alfalfa pallet. It has the advantage for a lower protein yield that may be beneficial for many classes of horses.

Most DEF tanks are a 5 gallon capacity, while some of the newer trucks have a 7.5-gallon capacity. The amount of usage of this fluid is based on how you use your truck. If you tow often, you will use more fluid. If you use your truck more for daily driving, less fluid will be used. Typically, the hotter your truck runs, or is being worked, the more fluid you will use. Cost of DEF varies per location. Stop by Strictly Diesel, we have plenty of DEF on hand to top your system off, or repair it if need be. Strictlydiesel.com 623-582-4404

FMCSA Announces New ELD Waiver

#1 & #2 ALFALFA - CLEAN BERMUDA -

602-980-4940

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) today announced additional steps to address the unique needs of the country’s agriculture industries and provided further guidance to assist in the effective implementation of the Congressionally-mandated electronic logging device (ELD) rule without impeding commerce or safety.

HAND STACKED!

NO MINIMUM - SAME DAY OR NEXT DAY DELIVERY

FMCSA is announcing an additional 90-day temporary waiver from the ELD rule for agriculture related transportation. Additionally, during this time period, FMCSA will publish final guidance on both the agricultural 150 air-mile hours-of-service exemption and personal conveyance. It is important to note that this 90 days is an extension of the previous 90 days given to all agriculture commodity haulers. This is not a final decision on the livestock specific ELD exemption request filed in September—a determination on that request is still to be made. The American Horse Council will continue to push for this exemption along with other livestock industry associations. The welfare, safety, and health of the animals in transit, together with the safety of other drivers on the road, are top priorities for the equine industry and its enthusiasts. The AHC will continue to work with the FMCSA and the DOT during this delay to better meet the needs of the animal agriculture community to ensure that there are no unintended consequences from current ELD regulations.

PET INDUSTRY HITS CLOSE TO $70 BILLION

Veterinary care spending for 2017 was at $17.07 billion, up 7 percent from 2016

Pet owners spent $69.5 billion on their companions in 2017, according to the latest figures from the American Pet Products Association (APPA). Pet food accounts for the single greatest source of spending, veterinary care spending remains the second highest at $17.07 billion, up 7 percent from 2016. The latest pet industry spending figures were announced at Global Pet Expo, an annual pet products trade show presented by APPA and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA). APPA’s annual comprehensive industry figures report covers pet spending in the market categories of food, supplies/over-the-counter medications, veterinary care, live animal purchases, and other services. “It’s incredible to not only see growth for the pet industry in general, but also to experience growth across all categories—with the exception of live animal purchases, which remained the same,” said Bob Vetere, APPA president and CEO. “Talk to any pet owner and they’ll tell you how difficult it is to put a dollar limit on what they’d spend to give their loyal companion a happy life, and it’s this outlook that continues to drive growth.” Spending on pet food continues to be the highest source of dollars spent, with spending on dog food specifically making up a majority of sales. Interest in high-end, premium pet food and treats continues to be a key driver for increased spending in the pet food category, but as owners increasingly value shop for these items, total food spending growth continues to slow down. Veterinary care spending remains the second highest source of spending in the pet industry

What’s old is new: A new horse genus emerges through DNA analysis of North American fossils The equid family tree was shaken up in a recent study by an international research team

Remember these? Growing up, I read Marguerite Henry’s All About Horses and Millicent Selsam’s Questions and Answers about Horses with the laser focus of a horse-crazy preteen, memorizing the minutiae about horse breeds and colors and the evolutionary development from Eohippus to the modernday horse. But it turns out that the equine family tree delineated in these cherished books has been revamped. An international research team has shaken up the equid family tree in a recently published study.1 In North America, horses from the Pleistocene (the geological epoch from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) have been classified into two major groups—the stout-legged horses and stilt-legged horses. Both groups became extinct near the end of the Pleistocene. Until now, the stilt-legged horses had been thought to be related to the Asiatic wild ass or a separate species within the genus Equus, which includes today’s horses, zebras and asses. As a result of this new study, it is now thought that the New World stilt-legged horses are not closely related to any living population of horses. Peter Heintzman’s research team set out to resolve where the stiltlegged horses sit within the horse family tree by analyzing more ancient DNA than in previous studies. Their analyses showed that the stilt-legged horses were much more distinct than previously thought. In fact, they found that these animals actually belonged outside the genus Equus. Heintzman and his fellow researchers named the new genus Haringtonhippus and showed that all stilt-legged horses belonged to a single species within this genus, Haringtonhippus francisci. (The new genus is named in honor of Canadian zoologist Charles Richard Harington. And it already has its own Wikipedia page. Check it out.) The extinct species appears to have diverged from the family tree that led to Equus between 4 and 6 million years ago. H. francisci was a widespread and successful species throughout North America, living alongside Equus. Fossils of New World stilt-legged equids have been studied for more than a century, but it wasn’t clear where they should be positioned within the family tree. Anatomical studies by earlier workers ended up being perplexing. According to the study, “That the cues of morphology have turned out to be misleading in this case underlines a recurrent problem in systematic biology, which is how best to discriminate authentic relationships within groups. … The solution we adopted here was to utilize both palaeogenomic and morphometric information in reframing the position of Haringtonhippus, which now clearly emerges as the closest known outgroup to all living Equus.”

Cooper, Shiozawa, and Petska in PRCA’s $2 Million Club

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Tuf Cooper’s 2017 PRCA season turned out to be more memorable than ever. The Decatur, Texas, cowboy won his first all-around world championship with $341,560 which sent him over the $2 million mark in career earnings. Only 27 other cowboys have reached this milestone. As of March 12, Cooper has $2,075,874. He’s leading the March 12 PRCA all-around world standings with $65,667. Cooper, 28, has won four career PRCA world championships – one all-around and three in tie-down roping (2011-12, 2014). Like Cooper, team roping heeler Cory Petska secured a spot in the prestigious $2 million club after he won the 2017 team roping heeler world championship at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. Petska earned $131,705 at last year’s WNFR as he and header Erich Rogers each walked away world champs. As of March 13, Petska has career earnings of $2,084,933. “It is awesome to join this ($2 million) club, it has been a great

88

career,” said Petska, who joined the PRCA in 1998. “Winning ($2 million in a career) never even crossed mind. I never even thought about it because $2 million seemed like so much money, I never thought I would reach that mark. The thing is a dream come true. Every kid dreams about winning a world championship and to do it this way (and pass the $2 million

mark) is amazing.” Petska, who is 24th in the March 12 PRCA World Standings with $12,066, is continuing to compete this season, but he isn’t going to reduce his schedule. “My goal every year is to rodeo and try and win the world, but this year I’m going to slow down and try to go to 40 or 50 rodeos instead of going to 90 like we usually do. I’m still going to try and hopefully make the Finals, but I’m not going to go as hard as I normally do. My life has been consumed with rodeo, and I want to do some other stuff. I feel like when I won the world that was one of my dreams come true and I want to slow down a touch and enjoy life.” Rogers said beginning at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, June 14-23,

APRIL 2018

he is going to start roping with header Colby Lovell, a sixtime qualifier for the WNFR (2010-13, 2015-16). “Erich (Rogers) just wanted to stay rodeoing and I wanted to slow down,” Petska said. “If I don’t have the Finals made by my date in my mind, I’m going to go home instead of continuing to rope until the last rodeo of the year.” Rogers and Petska have roped together since the 2013 season, culminating with their world championships a year ago. Cooper and Petska were recently joined in the $2 million PRCA club by veteran tie-down roper Matt Shiozawa, a 10-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2005-07, 2009, 2011-12, 2014-17). Shiozawa earned $41,731 last year at the WNFR, which put his career earnings at $1,980,908. This season, Shiozawa surpassed the $2 million mark while moving up to 10th in the March 12 standings with $21,296. “There’s so much learning that happens as a guy gets some years in,” said Shiozawa, who joined the PRCA in 1999. “You get some perspective and you start to understand a little bit more about the game you are actually playing. I’m excited to have passed that ($2 million mark). I learned how to make a living in rodeoing and provide for my family, and it’s great to get over the $2 million mark.” Shiozawa and his wife, Ali, have three daughters, Stella, 7; LuLu, 5; and Ivory, 3. They live in Chubbock, Idaho. Next up on the list of cowboys chasing $2 million in career earnings is four-time World Champion Bareback Rider Kaycee Feild. The 31-year-old currently sits at $1,977,542 as of the March 12 PRCA World Standings.

Animal Health Trust (AHT), the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Karolinska Institute, and Intervacc AB, have developed a new protein-based vaccine to protect horses from strangles. Strangles, caused by Streptococcus equi bacteria, leads to large pusfilled abscesses in horses’ throat and neck. The research was recently published in Vaccine. “Our Strangvac vaccine protected over 80 percent of horses from this dreadful disease,” said Jan-Ingmar Flock, Ph.D., CEO of Intervacc AB, the company that produced the vaccine. “Strangles is a scourge of the equine world and the development of Strangvac has the potential to prevent many thousands of horses from falling ill each year.” “Strangvac is an extremely exciting vaccine,” said Dr. Andrew Waller, head of bacteriology at AHT. “The vaccine was designed using information from sequencing the DNA of Streptococcus equi and highlights the potential that the genome-era heralds for improving the health of animals and people. Improving the health of horses is a core aim of the Animal Health Trust and we are proud to have helped make this vaccine a reality towards finally breaking the hold this disease currently has on our horses. “Transfer of the manufacturing process and production of commercial batches are underway towards the registration and launch of Strangvac, and we anticipate that Strangvac will be available for use during 2020,” Flock added.

By Dr. John A. Gangemi As we all know having a horse is quite enjoyable and a lot work. I find people that have horses generally have really good bone density from all weight bearing activities that goes along with riding and barn chores, however equestrians have a very high risk of developing spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is epidemic and is the leading cause of back surgeries in America. Stenosis, originally an engineering term, means narrowing of an opening. Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the openings of the bones in your spine. When the bones of the spine move backwards (posterior) from excessive spinal flexion movements or trauma, the spinal bones (vertebrae) will narrow the openings of the spine (the spinal canal and intervertebral foramina) creating; “nerve impingement”, inflammation and pain. Spinal stenosis pain can vary in degrees of intensity ranging from minor chronic pain to acute excruciating pain in the back, neck and head regions. Pain from spinal stenosis can prevent you from riding your horse and enjoying your time in the saddle. Spinal stenosis is a joint biomechanical problem… not a disease. Spinal stenosis can be evaluated and minimized by a health care professional specifically trained in the science of joint biomechanics as it relates to spinal stenosis. The proper way to address spinal stenosis is by gently moving the vertebrae from the back (posterior) to

Avoiding Spinal Stenosis when Riding

Dr. John A. Gangemi is a Chiropractic Physician with 15 years of clinical experience. He is a partner at FIX24 Wellness Studio in Scottsdale. His practice is limited to spinal stenosis cases. Dr Gangemi lives in Cave Creek with his wife Mary and has a 9 year old Arabian horse named Vegas. To contact Dr. Gangemi go to the FIX24 website at www.FIX24wellnessstudio.com the front ( anterior ) with no twisting of the spine. Moving the spinal bone forward will reestablish the spinal opening and release the nerve impingement, inflammation and pain. Spinal Stenosis can be minimized by using proper postural joint biomechanics. The first thing all you equestrians need to be aware of is; to avoid excessive spinal flexion. (flexion simply means bending forward) Please be mindful of your posture and minimize spinal flexion when you are; picking out your horses hoofs, grooming your horse, mucking stalls, and riding in the saddle. These movements tend to put the rider in excessive spinal flexion which

drives spinal bones backward ( posterior), causing narrowing of the spinal openings which causes “nerve impingement”, inflammation and pain. Proper biomechanics will minimize flexion injuries to the spine like using the “fencing stance” when bending forward. This position and movement is similar to the sport fencing (dueling with swords). The fencing stance keeps your back straight and uses muscles of your legs to bend forward avoiding dangerous spinal flexion. Spinal stenosis can also occur from unilateral (one sided) joint biomechanics challenges that we face every day in the horse world; such as getting on and off the saddle

from one side, carrying buckets of water and stacking hay bails. These movements tend to stress the the joints of the spine, hips, shoulders and knees and will develop into spinal stenosis. These activities cannot be avoided when taking care of our horses, but proper joint biomechanics and avoiding excessive spinal flexion and being mindful of unilateral joint stress, can minimize the serious health problems associated with spinal stenosis. Another challenge often seen in the horse world is spinal joint trauma from falling off of a horse. Accident trauma tends to jam the spinal bones into a backward position (posterior) and creates a long term joint fixation (the bone cannot move) This is a serious spinal stenosis problem because the fixation can last for years affecting other areas of your spine. The best advise… if you have had a recent or past trauma, is to have a proper spinal stenosis evaluation. Spinal stenosis is a health problem that affects horse rider’s of all ages. The good news is spinal stenosis can be minimized by; avoiding excessive spinal flexion, using the proper joint biomechanics such as the “fencing stance” and being mindful of unilateral joint stress. If you believe you, or a loved one might have spinal stenosis you should be evaluated ASAP. There comes a time when the spinal joints may be too worn out to recover from spinal stenosis trauma. I encourage you to get this health issue corrected, get back in the saddle, enjoy your horse, your sport and the beautiful Arizona Foothills.

West Nile Virus Facts

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus. WNV primarily causes disease in birds, humans, and horses and is transmitted by many different species of mosquitoes. Since 1999, more than 27,600 U.S. horses have been confirmed with WNV neuro-invasive disease with an estimated average case- fatality rate of 30–40%. During 2002 alone, over 15,000 horses were affected in the U.S. WNV is now considered endemic with

yearly activity in the U.S. (with an average 300 cases per year), Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. • Depression and anorexia without fever during initial viremia • Mild, low-grade fever (101.5– 103.5° F or 38.6–39.7° C) in about 25% of affected horses • Inappetence • Lethargy/somnolence • Neurologic signs o Onset of neurologic disease is frequently sudden and progressive o Periods of hyperexcitability, apprehension and/or somnolence o Fine tremors and fasciculations of the face and neck muscles o Cranial nerve paralysis; facial paralysis and weakness of the tongue are very common o Head tilt, droopy lip, muzzle deviation o Weakness, ataxia, and dysmetria in one or all limbs o Completeparalysisofoneormorelimbs o Colic o Recumbency o Death Expect clinical signs to be most severe in the very young and very old About 30% of WNV cases experience an increase in severity of clinical signs within 7–10 days of onset, sometimes after initial clinical signs have abated. 7–10 days • Unvaccinated or not up to date on WNV vaccination • Residence in endemic area

2017 Economic Impact Study Claims $122 Billion in Total Economic Value for Horse Industry in USA

(Washington, DC)- While the equine industry as a whole generates approximately $122 billion in total economic value, it’s commonly thought that the “big three” that are the primary economic drivers: Recreation, Racing, and Competition. However, the American Horse Council Foundation (AHCF) felt it was also important to bring in a new sector of the industry’s economic impact: Working Horses. “Traditional working horses remain an important part of the industry, and not just on American ranches,” said AHC President Julie Broadway. “In cities like New York and even here in Washington, DC, it’s not uncommon to have horses patrolling the streets, allowing individuals access to horses that they may not have otherwise had. Horses can also be found pulling carriages and adding charm to America’s cities and historic destinations.” The Working Horse sector consists of equines used in segments such as mounted police units, carriage operations, equine assisted therapy programs, and lesson programs, which accounts for 8% of the equine population. The Working Horse sector supports more than 42,000 direct jobs and adds $1.9 billion in direct value to the U.S. economy. These direct impacts drive a further $2.7 billion in added value to the economy and create more than 28,000 jobs from indirect and induced effects. The Recreation sector supports more than 162,000 direct jobs and adds $7.5 billion in direct value to the U.S. economy. Those direct impact drive a further $10.5 billion in added value to the economy, and create more than 110,00 jobs from both indirect and induced effects. Additionally, nearly 13 million households have participated in trail riding, with the

102

vast majority of trail riders- 87%- utilizing public lands to ride on. The Racing sector continues to have the largest economic impact: supporting more than 241,000 direct jobs and adding $15.6 billion in direct value to the U.S. economy. These direct impacts add $21 billion in value to the economy, and in total create more than 231,000 jobs from both indirect and induced effects. At Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racetracks, approximately $11 billion in wagering occurred in 2016, and tracks had $1.2 billion in total purses. Harness racetracks also had significant wagering of $1.45 billion, with $423 million in total purses. Finally, the Competition sector supports more than 241,000 direct jobs, and adds $11.8 billion in direct value to the U.S. economy. These direct impacts drive a further $16.5 billion in added value to the economy, and create more than 175,000 jobs from indirect and induced effects. Additionally, USEF, AQHA, NRHA and UPHA licensed approximately 6,313 competitions throughout 2016, utilizing 1,654 competition managers. “While the Racing sector is still the number one performing segment of the industry in economic impact, the Recreation industry continues to be the largest based on horse population, as well as creating new enthusiasts by providing easy access to equine activities such as trail riding and lessons,” said Ms. Broadway. “It’s also important to note how every segment of the equine industry has created 38 million households with equine enthusiasts in the United States!” For more information, and to purchase a copy of the complete National Economic Impact Study, please visit the AHC website at http://www. horsecouncil.org/horsecouncil-publications/.

Study discovers therapeutic riding programs help PTSD veterans

Program participants experienced a significant decrease in PTSD scores, almost 67 percent, after just three weeks, researchers found

A University of Missouri study has determined that veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder experienced a significant decrease in PTSD scores just weeks after therapeutic horseback riding (THR). Results show that therapeutic horseback riding may be a clinically effective intervention for alleviating PTSD symptoms in military veterans. “Estimates are that more than 23 million military veterans experience PTSD symptoms each year,” said Rebecca Johnson, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FNAP, professor in the MU College of Veterinary Medicine and the Millsap Professor of Gerontological Nursing in the Sinclair School of Nursing. “While counseling and behavior therapies often are prescribed, sometimes clinicians will encourage complemen-

tary therapies, such as therapeutic horseback riding. We wanted to test whether THR could be a useful complementary therapy in the treatment of PTSD.” The interaction between horses and riders has been demonstrated to increase riders’ confidence, selfesteem, sensory sensitivity, and social motivation while decreasing stress. For the study, 29 military veterans were assessed for eligibility from a nearby Veterans Administration hospital. Those diagnosed with PTSD or PTSD with traumatic brain injury were invited to participate in a therapeutic horseback riding program once a week for six weeks. PTSD symptoms then were measured both at three weeks and six weeks into the program using the PTSD Checklist-Military Version assessment, a 20-item selfreporting survey that is used by clinicians to gauge PTSD symptoms. Additionally, other measure-

ment instruments were used to assess improvements made in the treatment of the anxiety disorders. “Results showed that participants in the program experienced a significant decrease in PTSD scores, almost 67 percent, after just three weeks of THR,” Johnson said. “After six weeks, participants experienced an 87 percent drop in PTSD scores. Interestingly, the veterans who selfidentified for the study all were from the Vietnam War era, meaning that some of these military veterans had been experi-

encing PTSD symptoms for 40 or 50 years. It may be important for health care systems to support THR as a viable complimentary therapy.”

World Veterinary Day theme promotes sustainable development

“The role of the veterinary profession in sustainable development to improve livelihoods, food security, and safety”

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) announced that the theme of World Veterinary Day 2018, April 28, is “The role of the veterinary profession in sustainable development to improve livelihoods, food security, and safety.” The WVA created World Veterinary Day in 2000 as an annual celebration of the veterinary profession, falling on the last Saturday of April. Each year, the WVA and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) choose a theme. The AVMA and food security Among its recent efforts in food security, the American Veterinary Medical Association hosted the Global Food Security Summit, Feb. 9-11, 2017, in Washington, D.C. More than a

104

hundred people attended, including representatives from humanitarian and intergovernmental organizations involved with food development. The AVMA Committee on International Veterinary Affairs is developing recommendations for future action by the AVMA to continue the association’s involvement in global food security. The WVA and OIE confer the World Veterinary Day Award for the best contribution to the annual theme by a WVA member association working alone or with other veterinary groups. In 2017, the theme of World Veterinary Day was “Antimicrobial Resistance—From Awareness to Action.” The National Council of the Order of Veterinarians of France won the 2017 World Veterinary Day Award for extensive contributions in this area revolving around participation in France’s plan to reduce the risks of antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine. Details about World Veterinary Day and the World Veterinary Day Award are available at worldvet.org.

Blue Buffalo

The $8 billion deal is expected to be completed by May

Minneapolis-based food conglomerate General Mills is buying Wilton, Conn.-based Blue Buffalo Co., maker of Blue Buffalo pet food, for roughly $8 billion in cash in a deal expected to be completed by May. The acquisition marks General Mills’ return to the pet food business. The company produced pet food and sold it through pet stores in the 1930s and marketed food for dogs, cats, and birds in the 1950s. The deal accelerates the General Mills’ plan to enhance its growth prospects by diversifying its business through acquisitions

and divestitures of brands, said CEO Jeff Harmening. “The acquisition brings back the growth in the U.S. and growth on a consistent basis,” he said. Blue Buffalo had annual sales of $1.3 billion in its last fiscal year, Harmening said. The overall pet food market generates $10 billion annually, according to Neilsen. William Bishop Sr. and family founded the company in 2012, and it went public in 2015. General Mills will maintain the company’s Connecticut headquarters, and Bishop will remain CEO. The sale has been approved by both company boards, as well as Invus Public Equities, the Bishop family and Blue Buffalo’s largest shareholder.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has published updated biosecurity guidelines to help minimize the occurrence and mitigate the spread of potential disease outbreaks.

The downloadable PDF file incorporates comprehensive information and step-by-step protocols in three distinct areas: identification of key personnel, important contacts and reference materials; routine biosecurity protocol; and outbreak response. The AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee updated the protocols. The outbreak of an infectious disease can inflict significant economic hardship due to loss of horses, loss of use and shutdown of industry activity. To further reduce risk, the AAEP is assembling a companion worksheet that will serve as a practical resource for practitioners to use with their clients in planning for an outbreak. This fillable PDF worksheet is expected to be available in March. View the updated guidelines or to save them to your phone or tablet for future reference here. Additional biosecurity information specific to common situations and locations such as breeding operations, events and travel are available from the Equine Disease Communication Center through the “Biosecurity” link at equinediseasecc.org.
